ROME - Italian police stopped American rapper Snoop Dogg at Lamezia Terme airport on Saturday for trying to board a plane with over $420,000 in undeclared cash.

Police seized half the money and opened an investigation, local media said. The “Drop it like it’s hot” singer had performed two shows in the south of Italy and was on his way to the UK,

where he is slated to take to stage at the Kendal Calling Festival, according to the AGI news agency.

During a security check before the rapper boarded his private jet, police saw two bags full of cash, totalling $422,000 (384,000 euros).

Travellers within the European Union must declare any amount over 10,000 euros in cash as part of efforts to combat money laundering.

The artist cooperated with the au-

thorities and only asked that he could leave as soon as possible for London, local reports said.

According to AGI, four lawyers have been assigned to the case and Snoop Dogg will be able to reclaim the rest of his money after paying a fine.

YANGON — Angelina Jolie has joined Myanmar’s opposition leader and democracy icon, Aung San Suu Kyi, in sitting down with female workers to learn more about their dire conditions. Jolie, who is a special envoy for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, is on a four-day visit to the Southeast Asian nation.

During her meeting with the factory workers on the outskirts of an industrial zone in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, Jolie and Suu Kyi witnessed first-hand the conditions the women live in, mostly low-cost hostels. Jolie also toured inside the factory.

City tour program not supported by infrastructure

DENPASAR - The government of Denpasar is known to work on city tour package for the longest time. Now, the program is further strengthened to introduce cultural tourist destination in Denpasar to the public, especially to local and foreign travelers.

Denpasar Municipality through the Denpasar Tourism Office launched a tour package entitled “Denpasar Heritage City Tour,” Sunday (Mar. 29) in front of the Bali Museum.

However, the launching is considered premature. It is based on consideration that to date there is absolutely no indication of progress made by the Denpasar Municipality for the arrangement of physical

infrastructure.

“We greatly appreciate the plan of the Denpasar Municipality to sell city tour package. Unfortunately, there seems no preparation to support the city tour,” said one of the

legislators of the Denpasar House running the business in tourism sector, Putu Oka Mahendra. This Chairman of the Golkar Party Faction in the Denpasar House mentioned that to revive the city tour having been launched long time ago by the government must pay attention to a number of crucial components to support the city tour.

To that end, before launching it the Denpasar Municipality must make improvement or complete several public facilities such as toilets in the city tour package.

Arrangement of the park along the heritage city tour (Jagatnatha Temple-Bali Museum-Jaya SabhaCatur Muka Statue-Desa Temple and Pasar Badung) should be maximized.

Another member of the Golkar Faction also getting involved in tourism sector as a Japanese tourist guide, Wayan Suwirya, disclosed that to revive the city tour, the government must pay attention to a number of tourism components of tourism. One of them is the tour guide.

“Existence of the guide as tourism

practitioner that really understands about the intricacies of tourism excursion should be made a spearhead in the exciting the city tour package of Denpasar,” said Suwirya.

Pulling out from local election, candidates threatened with sanction

Sluggish supply, price of chili soars BANGLI - Price of chili in traditional market has soared since the past few days. Moreover, the price per kg reaches IDR 42,000. This condition causes a number of traders to be confused for fear of plummeting turnover.

One of the traders at Kidul Market Bangli, I Nyoman Pasek, revealed on Saturday (Aug. 1), that the price of chili has increased since ten days ago and the surge is very significant. Earlier, the price of red chili was only around IDR 25,000 per kg. However, it has now become IDR 40,000 per kg.

Similarly, the price of green chili previously sold for IDR 15,000 per kg has soared to IDR 30,000. “The price increase occurred about ten days ago. Its surge is very significant,” he said.

He also added that soaring price happened as the supply of chili from outside Bali namely Java was sluggish since the Eid. Currently, he only gets supplies from local farmers. So far, the surge in prices has not affected his sales turnover. Nevertheless, he also

worried. “The supply of chili from outside Bali began sluggish since the Eid. As a result, I just rely on local supply. That’s what makes the price go up,” he said.

Similar comment was also revealed by another trader, Ni Ketut Rumani. The price of chili currently reaches IDR 42,000 per kg.

This is much higher than during recent holidays such as Galungan, Kuningan and the Eid reaching around IDR 25,000.

“The price of chili is even far higher than during holidays. By all means, it is on the contrary where during holidays the price is expensive,” she explained.

In the meantime, the price of large chili even declines, where previously it was sold for IDR 15,000 per kg but now reaches IDR 10,000 per kg. On the other

hand, related to the coming of dry season, the price of vegetables remains relatively stable. As well as the supply is relatively smooth.

The quality of chili, said Rumini, is still quite good. “The price of vegetable is still stable and the supply has no problem, not affected by drought,” she said.

When confirmed separately, the Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, I Nengah Sudibia, said that the increase in prices of some commodities may happen due to higher demand than supply. Associated with the sluggish supply, she said, it is alleged to happen due to a number of regions experiencing crop failure. “The supply from outside is a little, while the demand is a lot. MANGUPURA - After registering as a candidate of the regent and deputy regent of Badung in local election, Giri Prasta-Suiasa package and Sudiana-Sutrisno package are not allowed to pull out from the nomination. The Badung Electoral Commission (KPU) asserted that each candidate duo pulling out from the democratic event will be subject to criminal sanction.

“We will impose criminal sanctions and fines for the candidate duos pulling out after registering themselves to the Electoral Commission. It has been set forth in the Law No. 8/2015 regarding local elections,” said Chairman of the Badung Electoral Commission, A.A. Gede Raka Nakula.

According to him, as set forth in Article 191 of the law, criminal penalty imposed to candidates pulling out is imprisonment with the shortest of 24 months and a maximum of 60 months.

However, the candidate duos will automatically disqualify when failing to complete the requirements specified.

“Or the smallest fine is worth IDR 25 billion to IDR 50 billion.

This applies to governor, regent and mayor that deliberately pull out after registering themselves at the Electoral Commission.

However, the candidate duos will be automatically disqualified if they cannot meet the requirements, but so far the two candidate duos have qualified,” he explained.

It does not only apply to candidate duos of the regent and deputy regent. According to Nakula, the law on the election also applies to political parties and the coalition of political parties pulling out the candidate duo having been registered to the Badung Electoral Commission.

“Political parties and coalitions of political parties are also prohibited to pull out their candidate or their support. If it is committed, political parties will be unable to nominate the replacement of the previous candidate,” he said.

He further explained that the Badung Electoral Commission is currently carrying out data verification such as the diploma legality of each candidate. As has been known, in the organization of the Badung local election 2015, the government of Badung County has budgeted approximately IDR 33.6 billion. It is further divided that Electoral Commission received IDR 19.5 billion, Electoral Supervisory Board received IDR 5.2 billion and security budget got IDR 8.7 billion. (kmb27)

DENPASAR - Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine received the submission of victim who died while snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan, Friday (Jul. 31).

An external examination was immediately performed to the victim. Ida Bagus Putu Alit, from the Forensic Medicine, said on Saturday (Aug. 1) that the body is known to be Chinese citizen

on behalf of Ling Liao Hui, 47.

The victim is wearing a green T-shirt with a while line pattern and knee-length jeans.

The time of his death is suspected of less than eight hours.

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon.

The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

African-American history and more in Harlem

NEW YORK — Decades of African-American history have made Harlem one of America’s most famous neighborhoods. It’s also an essential destination for visitors to New York, offering art, architecture, restaurants, shopping and more.

Attendance at Harlem’s Studio Museum has soared from 63,298 in the 2009-10 fiscal year to 111,086 in 2013-14. Restaurants like celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Streetbird Rotisserie are giving out-of-towners and locals a reason to head uptown for a meal.

And Harlem is the second-most requested neighborhood in Manhattan after midtown at Big Apple Greeter, which connects tourists

with volunteers for free neighborhood visits.

Even the Museum of Modern Art, located in midtown, is encouraging trips to Harlem with an online self-guided walking tour inspired by a MOMA exhibition, Jacob Lawrence’s “Migration Series” paintings. Lawrence painted scenes of African-Americans from the rural South moving to Northern cities in the early 20th century.

Ngerebong, a stabbing tradition at Kesiman Customary Village

DENPASAR - Ngerebong has become a tradition for the Kesiman customary village, Denpasar. A unique ritual called ngurek (stabbing kris dagger in the chest) is performed on the piodalan or anniversary of the Pangerebongan Temple falling every 210 days on Redite Pon Medangsia, Sunday (August 2) or eight days after Kuningan celebration.

In the ceremony, the customary villagers of Kesiman consisting of 33 hamlets became patih (intermediary of deities) for devotional works.

They put into trance and then take kris dagger to be stabbed in his chest. It is really horrible when the dagger, sharp and sacred objects, is stabbed in human chest. Ritual as a symbol of gratitude expression is carried out through a worship to sanctified effigies (Rangda, Ratu Ayu and Barong) in the temples of Kesiman customary village. After paying homage, some people carry the sanctified effigies.

The ritual is commenced by mapeed or parade procession to the temple where ngerebong is carried out and all the villagers put on customary attires. Each temple at Kesiman customary village takes out the sanctified effigies. There are also sanctified effigies from outside Kesiman that are engaged in the procession such as those from Pemogan, Singgi-Sanur, Suci Hamlet, Bali Beach, Sawangan-Bukit, Ubung, and some others.

Another unique tradition in this Pangerebongan ritual is cockfight performed by a group of people. When the cockfight taking place as a part of the ceremony, it looks like dominating the stabbing tradition. Meanwhile, the ngerebong itself is done by surrounding counter-clockwise the wantilan hall where people are holding cockfight.

Ngerebong has become a tradition for the Kesiman customary village, Denpasar. hamlet, one of the mediums (pedasaran) at Kesiman said the cockfight would cause the rooster to injure and bleed. Such blood sprinkle was then used as sacrifice locally known as tabuh rah as a series in the animal sacrifice ritual or mecaru.

The man usually called Gung Cut added that in the past when the gambling like ceki

cards and cockfight was prohibited intensively, the Kesiman customary village did not hold the tabuh rah or cockfight ritual.

However, what happened next was that all the intermediaries of the local deities (patih) were in trance and got injured by the kris dagger usually used to stab.

Another belief owned by Kesiman customary village was that people were not allowed to go out or travel during the day of Pangerebongan ritual. If people broke it, undesired thing might happen to them. (kmb)

Remains low, community attends higher education

MANGUPURA - The number of Indonesian society attending higher education is still relatively low. Not more than 20 percent of the people enjoy the education up to college. It was stated by the Rector of the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Ketut Suastika recently.

“I think there are many people that just completed primary school.

In contrary, in remote places most people have not been educated,” he said.

He hoped that the government’s attention to the education sector in Bali can be increased to catch up over the years. Moreover, ahead of local leader election 2015, the elected regents or mayor must have the favor of the education sector.

“We do hope the newly elected regents will remain to have a good relationship to the Udayana University and still want to assist in the matter of facilities related to education,” he hoped.

On the other hand, he said, the quality of education in Indonesia, including Bali, is far left behind compared to developed countries such as the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan. It is even still far behind Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Actually, the education sector becomes one of the determining progresses of a country, including the region.

Rector Prof. Suastika said that the education sector clearly has correlation with the progress of a nation. Evidently, the more educated people in a country, particularly at higher education, the more advanced the nation will be.

According to him, the underdevelopment of Bali in education sector should be caught up. “Few decades ago, we were more fabulous than Malaysia, but now in this competition we are far left behind.

So, this is a difficult task to be caught up,” he said. (kmb27)

In my childhood, the edge of the beach was far away in the south and the sand remained available right here,” he said while pointing to a row of breakwater.

Biden associates resume discussion about presidential run WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden’s associates have resumed discussions about a possible 2016 presidential run after largely putting aside such deliberations during his son’s illness and following his death earlier this year. But Biden has yet to tell his staff whether he will run or personally ask them to do any planning for a potential campaign, according to several people close to the vice president.

Recent conversations between Biden’s associates and Democratic donors and operatives have led to speculation that Biden will challenge front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton for the party’s nomination, and individuals close to Biden have started looking into what options might be available to him if he were to run, such as potential staff in the early-voting state of Iowa. Biden is expected to make a final decision as soon as early September, according to those familiar with his plans.

The people close to Biden spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deliberations.

The renewed focus on Biden

comes amid some signs of weakness for Clinton, including declines in her favorability among voters in recent polling. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is challenging Clinton for the Democratic nomination, has been attracting large crowds with a liberal economic message, evidence of a hunger within the party for an alternative to Clinton’s candidacy.

Biden’s entry could fundamentally reshape the dynamics of the Democratic primary elections.

Yet Clinton remains enormously popular among Democrats. She has raised nearly $50 million for her campaign.

There are few signs, meanwhile, that Biden is taking solid steps toward launching a campaign. He has had little interaction with a “draft

Kendra Barkoff, the vice president’s press secretary, said Biden was spending his time working on President Barack Obama’s agenda, not on planning his own potential presidential campaign.

“As the Biden family continues to go through this difficult time, the vice president is focused on his family and immersed in his work,” Barkoff said.

Biden’s son, Beau, died of brain cancer in May. The younger Biden’s death prompted an outpouring of support for the vice president, who also lost a daughter and his first wife in a car accident in 1972.

NEW YORK — Dozens of people stopped in Manhattan intersections gazing at photos of endangered animals shining on the side of the Empire State Building. Organizers say the Saturday night event was a first-of-its-kind live video projection.

It drew large crowds of spectators, many taking photos with their smartphones. Images of en-

dangered animals, including birds, tigers, bears and other creatures, shined on the south side of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The event was meant to spark conversations about mass extinction. BUSINESS Pacific trade talks fail to clinch TPP deal

WASHINGTON - Delegates negotiating a vast Pacific free-trade agreement have failed to reach a final deal after several days of intense talks in Hawaii, dealing a setback to US President Barack Obama.

The delay complicates his efforts this year to secure the historic accord, which risks becoming dragged into the 2016 presidential election debate.

US Trade Representative Michael Froman, in a statement late Friday on behalf of the 12 countries involved in the talks on the island of Maui, insisted that significant progress had been made on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, the most ambitious trade deal in decades.

“After more than a week of productive meetings we’ve made significant progress and will continue on resolving a limited number of remaining issues, paving the way for the conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations,” Froman told a press conference.

Negotiators were “more confident than ever that the TPP is within reach,” he said, adding that the Pacific Rim countries would continue bilateral discussions to try and iron out remaining differences.

Already eight years in the making, TPP would be a huge bloc encompassing 40 percent of global trade and part of Obama’s muchvaunted “pivot” towards Asia in the face of an increasingly assertive China, which is not included in TPP. The press conference was delayed several hours as the countries attempted to thrash out a deal in what had been billed as the home stretch.

The failure by trade ministers to wrap up the accord Friday was a blow to Obama -- who faces opposition to the deal from fellow Democrats -- as it could see the TPP become campaign fodder ahead of November 2016 elections.

“This setback to the TPP in Maui shifts the momentum in the national debate,” said House Democrat and accord opponent Rosa DeLauro.

“The impasse highlights very troubling issues for anyone concerned about the future of the American middle class.” (afp)

Varoufakis warns Spain could ‘become Greece’ MADRID - Spain could become like Greece if the same austerity policies are imposed on the country, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said in an interview published Sunday.

“Spaniards need to look at their own economic and social situation and based on that evaluate what their country needs, independently of what happens in Greece or wherever,” he told centre-left daily El Pais.

“The danger of becoming Greece is always there and it will become reality if the same mistakes that were imposed on Greece are repeated,” he added.

Varoufakis, an economist with unorthodox ideas about the euro and Greece’s debt restructuring, resigned the day after Greeks voted against creditor bailout terms in a July

With a general election looming later this year, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has used the economic turbulence in Greece as a chilling backdrop to promote his own government’s crisis management.

I Kadek Satria, a lecturer at the Faculty of Hinduism and Culture in the Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), said that sarad was ritual paraphernalia in the higher level symbolizing the rwa bhineda or basic dualism. It was made from flour batter in such a way so that the ingredients symbolizing the nature.

The use of flour as the smallest part of rice had the meaning as seriousness of devotion.

The flour batter was kneaded and then shaped in accordance with the content of this world. There were celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars. Similarly, there were also human being with all activities, plants like flowering plants, large trees, medicinal trees and other small trees as well as two-legged animal, one-leg animal and animals having more legs.

It was also described the heavenly life like the angles.

According to Kadek Satria, not all Hindu ceremonies in Bali used the sarad cake. The cake made like kayonan (mountain) was specially made for a grandiose ritual like padudusan agung used to purify nature. “It resembles kayonan as an aesthetic element symbolizing tattva (philosophy). Kayon is the beginning of story and literature,” he said.

Sarad was made by a particular person or artisan of the offerings.

Meanwhile, the colors in use were adjusted the diverse colors of nature.

In a grandiose ceremony, like padudusan agung, it was usually installed three days before the event or after the preparation of tawur offerings.

Many people also installed it by consensus of the committee or in appropriate with the situation.

In the mapedudus ritual, it was

presented along with sate tunggeh or sate tegeh. Afterward, the satay was then arranged to resemble how the sarad cake was prepared, but all the ingredients were made from pork.

The satay was arranged in such a way and had a meaning. At the bottom, there was a pig’s head as a symbol of rajas (preservation).

Sate tunggeh symbolized rajas while sarad symbolized sattva (creation). With the balance of sattva and rajas, the ritual was considered to be successful and ended properly.

Behind the sate tunggeh was usually put different types of offerings such as bagia pala kerti and penyegjeg symbolizing the content of nature presented by devotees to God. Kadek Satria said the philosophy of sate tunggeh was actually describing human life where it was completed with three qualities affecting the human life itself known as tri gunas consisting of sattva (creation), rajas (preservation) and tamas (destroyer).

Each guna existed in every human being, so that they were symbolized in the offerings. “By balancing sattva, rajas and tamas, it is believed that people can have reunion with God,” he explained.

Kadek Satria affirmed that when sattva, rajas and tamas attained balance, it would result in a good citta (heart, mind). “Here, we will be in balance called citta wretti nirodha, which means that with a balanced mind we attain happiness,” he said. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian officials said Sunday that they would seek help from territories near the island where a suspected piece of the missing Malaysia Airlines jet was discovered to try to find more plane debris.

Government officials will ask territories near the French island of Reunion in the western Indian Ocean to alert them if they find any debris that could be from a plane, said a transport ministry official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A wing flap suspected to be from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was found Wednesday on Reunion. It arrived Saturday at a French military testing facility, where it will be analyzed by experts.

Air safety investigators, including one from Boeing, have identified the component as a flaperon from the trailing edge of a Boeing 777 wing, a U.S. official has said.

Flight 370 is the only missing 777 and many are convinced the flap comes from the ill-fated jet.

Malaysia’s transport ministry confirmed Sunday that the flaperon has been identified as being from a 777, saying it had been verified

by French authorities together with Boeing, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and a Malaysian team. Experts will try to establish whether the part comes from Flight 370, which disappeared on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

The experts are expected to start their inquiry on Wednesday.

On Monday, an investigating judge will meet with Malaysian authorities and representatives of the French aviation investigative agency, known as the BEA. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said in a statement Sunday that representatives from

Malaysia, the U.S., China, France and Boeing would take part in the verification of the flaperon. About two-thirds of those aboard Flight 370 were Chinese.

Liow said Malaysia’s Department of Civil Aviation was reaching out to authorities in territories near Reunion to allow experts “to conduct more substantive analysis should there be more debris coming on to land, providing us more clues to the missing aircraft.”

“I urge all parties to allow this crucial investigation process to take its course. I reiterate this is for the sake of the next of kin of the loved ones of MH370 who would be anxiously awaiting news and have suffered much over this time,” Liow said. “We will make an announcement once the verification process has been completed.” (ap)

French riot police disperse migrants at Channel Tunnel COQUELLES, France — French riot police have sprayed migrants with a chemical irritant as they tried to storm the Channel Tunnel, and the British and French interior ministers said the nightly attempts to reach Britain are part of a “global migration crisis” that needs an international solution.

The migrants, who broke down several security fences late Saturday, were forced to retreat by riot police as they attempted to breach the final fence near the entrance of the 50kilometer (30-mile) tunnel under the English Channel.

The migrants, estimated to number around 200 by an Associated Press journalist, faced off for close to an hour with security forces, chanting slogans including: “Open the border” and “We are not animals.”

Thousands of migrants have been scaling fences near the tunnel, often referred to as the Chunnel, in recent weeks, trying to hop on freight trains or trucks destined for Britain. One man was fatally crushed by a truck.

Most of the migrants have fled war, dictatorship and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, entering Europe Greece or Italy before heading north. Many think Britain

offers the best prospects, because of the English language, welfare benefits and the perceived ease of getting a job.

The migrant activity at the Chunnel — combined with a series of strikes by French ferry workers — have disrupted freight and passenger traffic, and spurred both governments to promise higher fences, more surveillance cameras and extra security guards.

In an article published in Britain’s Sunday Telegraph and France’s Journal du Dimanche, British Home Secretary Theresa May and French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said stopping the flow of migrants was “the top priority” for both governments. But they added that the entire European Union must “address this problem at root.”

They said many migrants saw the streets of Europe as “paved with gold” and “we must break the link between crossing the Mediterranean and achieving settlement in Europe for economic reasons.”

Indonesia, Turkey agree on cooperation to combat terrorism JAKARTA — Indonesia and Turkey agreed Thursday to strengthen their intelligence cooperation as a way to bolster their efforts to combat terrorism and prevent the spread of radicalism.

The agreement was achieved in a meeting between Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a three-day visit to Indonesia.

In a joint news conference after the 90-minute meeting, Erdogan said Turkey has stopped 6,000 foreigners who were suspected of heading to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside IS, and it has deported about 1,600 of them to their home countries. More than 1,300 have

been arrested and detained.

“That shows that our country has become overwhelmed by the crisis related to terrorism and refugees,” he said, suggesting that other countries in the region must also be involved in the solution.

An estimated 500 fighters from Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, have reportedly joined the Islamic State group. Only 12 were deported to Indonesia. In a speech earlier in the day at the National Defense Institute, Erdogan denied what he described as “black propaganda” that Turkey is assisting terrorist organizations.

JOMBANG - President Joko (Jokowi) Widodo expressed a hope that Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as one of the largest Muslim organizations in Indonesia can serve as a bridge by showing to the world that Islam is a source of peace.

“I have a great hope that NU to not only demonstrate about the understanding of civilization but also Islam as a form of mercy,” the president said when inaugurating the opening of 33rd NU congress here on Saturday.

In addition, the president also expected that NU keeps cooperating with various circles in effort to improve the world order.

“Especially in overcoming poverty and inequality as the root cause of terrorism,” Jokowi pointed out.

According to the president NU has an important role to play by demonstrating a moderate Islamic lifestyle.

The president further appreciated the theme of the conference, namely “To Strengthen Islam Nusantara (archipelago) in a bid to establish civilizations of Indonesia and the world.”

On the occasion, Jokowi also revealed the recent visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron who wished to know a lot about Islam in Indonesia which is tolerant and peaceful.

“During the visit he was interested in studying the history of Islam in our country, the advanced Islam and tolerance.

He also wanted to know more about Muslim organizations in Indonesia,” the president stated.

Jokowi also stressed the importance of building good communication among religious adherents.

“The existing tolerance should not be marred by a few problems,” the head of state added.

Earlier, Minister for Rural and Backward Village Development and Transmigration Marwan Jafar has expressed hope that the 33rd Congress of Nahdlatul Ulama will serve to boost efforts to develop rural areas.

He said here on Saturday that he hopes for this because NU members are mostly based out of rural regions.

“As the minister of rural development and a member of NU, I certainly hope that the congress motivates other members to participate in rural development efforts, which is part of their duties,” the minister explained in a press statement.

If intolerance continues to prevail in various regions, Jafar believes it will be difficult for villages to progress and develop, even if they have the will for it. This is because intolerance makes regions vulnerable to provocation that may lead to riots. (ant)

The top-seeded former University of Georgia star locked in his serve against his Tampa, Florida, neighbor, shutting out his frequent practice partner by winning all 16 of his service points in the second set. Isner then took 24 points off 30 serves in the third.

“I think (Muller) lost his rhythm, and I started messing up his targets,” Baghdatis said. Although 0-5 against Isner, all on hard courts like Atlanta’s, the colorful Cypriot said with a chuckle that Sunday’s key, “I think will be about messing up (Isner’s) game, and taking his eyes off the ball.”

The former world No. 8 (August, 2008) who fell in his past seven ATP semifinals, bent down after his win and kissed the court. He did the same Friday after beating secondseed Vasek Pospisil in straight sets.

“Baghdatis will be different,” Isner said. “He returns very well.”

Isner played the last two sets differently than the first, unleashing his greatest weapon and ripping several serves at 140 and 141 mph.

After winning a rock-steady first set, the 22-year-old Kudla — who warmed Isner up at Wimbledon in 2010 before Isner played the longest match in history, an 11-hour, 5-minute win over Nicolas Mahut — made all the key mistakes in his first ATP semifinal (to Isner’s 39th).

Kudla was on a 17-2 streak into the match, along the way becoming the first American male since 2012 to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

But Isner broke serve twice in the second set, each time winning as Kudla sent easy forehands from the baseline into the net to cede Isner a lead of 3-1 and then the set. The only break of the final set came on another Kudla forehand mistake, when he sent one wide to end the match.

“He stayed a little more disciplined than he would in some practice moments,” Kudla said of Isner. “He started flattening out his serve. In the beginning, he was trying to pick his spots and I could get a racket on it. When he gets up toward 140, that’s when it gets tough.”

Top-seeded Mike and Bob Bryan easily won the first doubles semifinal Saturday. The most successful tandem in history beat Donald Young and Christopher Eubanks 6-2, 6-4 for their record 942nd career win together. (ap)

Sebastian Vettel believes it is ‘game on’ for Ferrari in the Formula 1 title race, and he has no doubt his team will “try absolutely everything” to catch Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel’s second grand prix win of the year in Hungary last Sunday, which was the 41st of his F1 career to match the haul of the late Ayrton Senna, has thrust the four times champion back into striking distance of the Mercedes drivers in the points standings.

Heading into the summer break Vettel trails championship leader Hamilton by 42 points - equivalent to just under a win and a second place - and he is just 21 behind the Briton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg. Suggested to Vettel it will be ‘game on’ once the season resumes in Belgium in a few weeks’ time, he replied: “It has always been.

“We know we have to remain realistic, that there is still a lot of work to do and a lot of catching up to do. “You never know. I’m sure we will try absolutely everything, and try to make the impossible possible. “The best way of doing that is to remain calm, to try to do your best, and then we will see

where the journey takes us.

“If you look at where we were last year, in terms of performance of the car and team morale, everything is a lot better than it was,” added Vettel.

“Inside the team we are happy with what has been achieved in all areas and if you look at the car and I did not drive it last year - but Kimi is a lot happier. “Of all the teams I think Ferrari has made the biggest step.

MONTREAL — Paris SaintGermain won the Trophee des Champions for the second straight year 2-0 over Lyon on Saturday.

PSG, which achieved a domestic treble last season by claiming the French league, League Cup, and French Cup, put on a clinical display, converting its first chance when Serge Aurier headed home from close range after Lyon defenders failed to clear a free kick in the 11th minute.

After conceding six goals against Arsenal last month at the Emirates Cup in London, Lyon’s defensive worries continued, and Edinson Cavani doubled PSG’s lead six minutes later from the rebound after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Wolfsburg beats Bayern on penalties to win German Super Cup WOLFSBURG, Germany — Substitute Nicklas Bendtner scored a late equalizer and converted the decisive penalty to give Wolfsburg the German Super Cup title over Bayern Munich on Saturday.

SAO PAULO - Ronaldinho Gaucho made a triumphant return to Brazilian soccer on Saturday when he set up the goal that gave Fluminense a 1-0 win over Gremio at the Maracana stadium.

The former Barcelona forward was a shadow of his former self but his flighted pass into the box after 76 minutes was knocked down for Marcos Junior, who dribbled around the keeper and slotted the ball into the net.

ASUNCION - Paraguay has offered to be one of the official backers of Michel Platini’s bid for the F I F A presidency, the country’s football association said in a letter sent to FIFA. Candidates for the FIFA presidency have to present the written support of five national football associations by Oct. 26, four months before the election.

“The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) is honoured to officially offer its backing to Michel Platini’s candidacy for the president of FIFA,” said the association in a letter addressed to FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke.

“Please send Michel Platini’s candidacy to the FIFA electoral committee to be examined,” the letter, signed by APF president Alejandro Dominguez and published on its website, added.

ASUNCION - Paraguay has offered to be one of the official backers of Michel Platini’s bid for the F I F A presidency, the country’s football association said in a letter sent to FIFA. Candidates for the FIFA presidency have to present the written support of five national football associations by Oct. 26, four months before the election.

“The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) is honoured to officially offer its backing to Michel Platini’s candidacy for the president of FIFA,” said the association in a letter addressed to FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke.

“Please send Michel Platini’s candidacy to the FIFA electoral committee to be examined,” the letter, signed by APF president Alejandro Dominguez and published on its website, added.

The top-seeded former University of Georgia star locked in his serve against his Tampa, Florida, neighbor, shutting out his frequent practice partner by winning all 16 of his service points in the second set. Isner then took 24 points off 30 serves in the third.

“I was hitting them bigger, which is a good sign,” Isner said after moving his Atlanta record to 19-3 with his 11th consecutive win at Atlantic Station. “I got stronger and stronger as that match went on.

Then, Baghdatis began to figure out the big-serving left-hander, breaking Muller once in the second set, and twice in the third to reach his 12th ATP final in search of his fifth title. After scoring on just one of Muller’s 23 first serves in the first set, Baghdatis scored on 9 of 26 of Muller’s serves in the second set and on 20 of 47 in the third.

“I think (Muller) lost his rhythm, and I started messing up his targets,” Baghdatis said. Although 0-5 against Isner, all on hard courts like Atlanta’s, the colorful Cypriot said with a chuckle that Sunday’s key, “I think will be about messing up (Isner’s) game, and taking his eyes off the ball.”

The former world No. 8 (August, 2008) who fell in his past seven ATP semifinals, bent down after his win and kissed the court. He did the same Friday after beating secondseed Vasek Pospisil in straight sets.

“Baghdatis will be different,” Isner said. “He returns very well.”

Isner played the last two sets differently than the first, unleashing his greatest weapon and ripping several serves at 140 and 141 mph.

After winning a rock-steady first set, the 22-year-old Kudla — who warmed Isner up at Wimbledon in 2010 before Isner played the longest match in history, an 11-hour, 5-minute win over Nicolas Mahut — made all the key mistakes in his first ATP semifinal (to Isner’s 39th).

Kudla was on a 17-2 streak into the match, along the way becoming the first American male since 2012 to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

But Isner broke serve twice in the second set, each time winning as Kudla sent easy forehands from the baseline into the net to cede Isner a lead of 3-1 and then the set. The only break of the final set came on another Kudla forehand mistake, when he sent one wide to end the match.

“He stayed a little more disciplined than he would in some practice moments,” Kudla said of Isner. “He started flattening out his serve. In the beginning, he was trying to pick his spots and I could get a racket on it. When he gets up toward 140, that’s when it gets tough.”

Top-seeded Mike and Bob Bryan easily won the first doubles semifinal Saturday. The most successful tandem in history beat Donald Young and Christopher Eubanks 6-2, 6-4 for their record 942nd career win together. (ap)

Sebastian Vettel believes it is ‘game on’ for Ferrari in the Formula 1 title race, and he has no doubt his team will “try absolutely everything” to catch Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel’s second grand prix win of the year in Hungary last Sunday, which was the 41st of his F1 career to match the haul of the late Ayrton Senna, has thrust the four times champion back into striking distance of the Mercedes drivers in the points standings.

Heading into the summer break Vettel trails championship leader Hamilton by 42 points - equivalent to just under a win and a second place - and he is just 21 behind the Briton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg. Suggested to Vettel it will be ‘game on’ once the season resumes in Belgium in a few weeks’ time, he replied: “It has always been.

“We know we have to remain realistic, that there is still a lot of work to do and a lot of catching up to do. “You never know. I’m sure we will try absolutely everything, and try to make the impossible possible. “The best way of doing that is to remain calm, to try to do your best, and then we will see

where the journey takes us.

“I’m sure it’s well appreciated by all the team to have a bit of a break now, and to recap on a very strong start.” As far as Vettel is concerned, the first 10 races of his Ferrari career - that have included two wins and five other podium finishes - have made the first half of the season “phenomenal”.

It is all in stark contrast to last season when Kimi Raikkonen and former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso managed just two podiums between them, both achieved by the Spaniard who is now with McLaren.

“If you look at where we were last year, in terms of performance of the car and team morale, everything is a lot better than it was,” added Vettel.

“Inside the team we are happy with what has been achieved in all areas and if you look at the car and I did not drive it last year - but Kimi is a lot happier. “Of all the teams I think Ferrari has made the biggest step.

“Sometimes you find yourself in a race where things aren’t coming together, but if you look at the last five or six races, it’s looked pretty good.” (net)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysian officials said Sunday that they would seek help from territories near the island where a suspected piece of the missing Malaysia Airlines jet was discovered to try to find more plane debris.

Government officials will ask territories near the French island of Reunion in the western Indian Ocean to alert them if they find any debris that could be from a plane, said a transport ministry official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A wing flap suspected to be from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was found Wednesday on Reunion. It arrived Saturday at a French military testing facility, where it will be analyzed by experts.

Air safety investigators, including one from Boeing, have identified the component as a flaperon from the trailing edge of a Boeing 777 wing, a U.S. official has said.

Flight 370 is the only missing 777 and many are convinced the flap comes from the ill-fated jet.

Malaysia’s transport ministry confirmed Sunday that the flaperon has been identified as being from a 777, saying it had been verified

by French authorities together with Boeing, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and a Malaysian team. Experts will try to establish whether the part comes from Flight 370, which disappeared on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

The experts are expected to start their inquiry on Wednesday.

On Monday, an investigating judge will meet with Malaysian authorities and representatives of the French aviation investigative agency, known as the BEA. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said in a statement Sunday that representatives from

Malaysia, the U.S., China, France and Boeing would take part in the verification of the flaperon. About two-thirds of those aboard Flight 370 were Chinese.

Liow said Malaysia’s Department of Civil Aviation was reaching out to authorities in territories near Reunion to allow experts “to conduct more substantive analysis should there be more debris coming on to land, providing us more clues to the missing aircraft.”

“I urge all parties to allow this crucial investigation process to take its course. I reiterate this is for the sake of the next of kin of the loved ones of MH370 who would be anxiously awaiting news and have suffered much over this time,” Liow said. “We will make an announcement once the verification process has been completed.” (ap)

French riot police disperse migrants at Channel Tunnel COQUELLES, France — French riot police have sprayed migrants with a chemical irritant as they tried to storm the Channel Tunnel, and the British and French interior ministers said the nightly attempts to reach Britain are part of a “global migration crisis” that needs an international solution.

The migrants, who broke down several security fences late Saturday, were forced to retreat by riot police as they attempted to breach the final fence near the entrance of the 50kilometer (30-mile) tunnel under the English Channel.

The migrants, estimated to number around 200 by an Associated Press journalist, faced off for close to an hour with security forces, chanting slogans including: “Open the border” and “We are not animals.”

Thousands of migrants have been scaling fences near the tunnel, often referred to as the Chunnel, in recent weeks, trying to hop on freight trains or trucks destined for Britain. One man was fatally crushed by a truck.

Most of the migrants have fled war, dictatorship and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, entering Europe Greece or Italy before heading north. Many think Britain

offers the best prospects, because of the English language, welfare benefits and the perceived ease of getting a job.

The migrant activity at the Chunnel — combined with a series of strikes by French ferry workers — have disrupted freight and passenger traffic, and spurred both governments to promise higher fences, more surveillance cameras and extra security guards.

In an article published in Britain’s Sunday Telegraph and France’s Journal du Dimanche, British Home Secretary Theresa May and French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said stopping the flow of migrants was “the top priority” for both governments. But they added that the entire European Union must “address this problem at root.”

They said many migrants saw the streets of Europe as “paved with gold” and “we must break the link between crossing the Mediterranean and achieving settlement in Europe for economic reasons.”

The governments are keen to show a united front on this issue, but many British politicians have criticized France for supposedly lax security at the tunnel. (ap)

Indonesia, Turkey agree on cooperation to combat terrorism JAKARTA — Indonesia and Turkey agreed Thursday to strengthen their intelligence cooperation as a way to bolster their efforts to combat terrorism and prevent the spread of radicalism.

The agreement was achieved in a meeting between Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a three-day visit to Indonesia.

In a joint news conference after the 90-minute meeting, Erdogan said Turkey has stopped 6,000 foreigners who were suspected of heading to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside IS, and it has deported about 1,600 of them to their home countries. More than 1,300 have

been arrested and detained.

“That shows that our country has become overwhelmed by the crisis related to terrorism and refugees,” he said, suggesting that other countries in the region must also be involved in the solution.

An estimated 500 fighters from Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, have reportedly joined the Islamic State group. Only 12 were deported to Indonesia. In a speech earlier in the day at the National Defense Institute, Erdogan denied what he described as “black propaganda” that Turkey is assisting terrorist organizations.

He said here on Saturday that he hopes for this because NU members are mostly based out of rural regions.

“As the minister of rural development and a member of NU, I certainly hope that the congress motivates other members to participate in rural development efforts, which is part of their duties,” the minister explained in a press statement.

BUSINESS Pacific trade talks fail to clinch TPP deal

WASHINGTON - Delegates negotiating a vast Pacific free-trade agreement have failed to reach a final deal after several days of intense talks in Hawaii, dealing a setback to US President Barack Obama.

The delay complicates his efforts this year to secure the historic accord, which risks becoming dragged into the 2016 presidential election debate.

US Trade Representative Michael Froman, in a statement late Friday on behalf of the 12 countries involved in the talks on the island of Maui, insisted that significant progress had been made on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, the most ambitious trade deal in decades.

“After more than a week of productive meetings we’ve made significant progress and will continue on resolving a limited number of remaining issues, paving the way for the conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations,” Froman told a press conference.

Negotiators were “more confident than ever that the TPP is within reach,” he said, adding that the Pacific Rim countries would continue bilateral discussions to try and iron out remaining differences.

Already eight years in the making, TPP would be a huge bloc encompassing 40 percent of global trade and part of Obama’s muchvaunted “pivot” towards Asia in the face of an increasingly assertive China, which is not included in TPP. The press conference was delayed several hours as the countries attempted to thrash out a deal in what had been billed as the home stretch.

The failure by trade ministers to wrap up the accord Friday was a blow to Obama -- who faces opposition to the deal from fellow Democrats -- as it could see the TPP become campaign fodder ahead of November 2016 elections.

“This setback to the TPP in Maui shifts the momentum in the national debate,” said House Democrat and accord opponent Rosa DeLauro.

“The impasse highlights very troubling issues for anyone concerned about the future of the American middle class.” (afp)

Varoufakis warns Spain could ‘become Greece’ MADRID - Spain could become like Greece if the same austerity policies are imposed on the country, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said in an interview published Sunday.

“Spaniards need to look at their own economic and social situation and based on that evaluate what their country needs, independently of what happens in Greece or wherever,” he told centre-left daily El Pais.

“The danger of becoming Greece is always there and it will become reality if the same mistakes that were imposed on Greece are repeated,” he added.

Varoufakis, an economist with unorthodox ideas about the euro and Greece’s debt restructuring, resigned the day after Greeks voted against creditor bailout terms in a July

5 referendum.

The Greek government later accepted even harsher terms in a deal at an all-night eurozone summit on July 12-13.

With a general election looming later this year, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has used the economic turbulence in Greece as a chilling backdrop to promote his own government’s crisis management.

Rajoy’s conservative Popular Party says that if new far-left party Podemos -- a close ally of Greece’s ruling Syriza -- forces a change of course on the economy after the election, Spain could plunge back into crisis.

Asked about the Spanish government’s statements, Varoufakis said Greece “has become a sort of football for right-wing politicians, who insist on using Greece to frighten

their population.”

Spain emerged in 2013 from five years of on-off recession and the government forecasts the economy will grow 3.3 percent this year -- more than twice the average forecast for eurozone countries.

Madrid aims in 2016 to bring the deficit under the level of three percent of economic output required by European treaties.

It forecasts the country’s public debt will equal 98.5 percent of the economy this year, compared with Greece’s debt ratio of more than 177 percent.

But its unemployment rate is still dire at more than 22 percent -- the second-highest in the eurozone after that of bailed-out Greece.

I Kadek Satria, a lecturer at the Faculty of Hinduism and Culture in the Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), said that sarad was ritual paraphernalia in the higher level symbolizing the rwa bhineda or basic dualism. It was made from flour batter in such a way so that the ingredients symbolizing the nature.

The use of flour as the smallest part of rice had the meaning as seriousness of devotion.

The flour batter was kneaded and then shaped in accordance with the content of this world. There were celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and stars. Similarly, there were also human being with all activities, plants like flowering plants, large trees, medicinal trees and other small trees as well as two-legged animal, one-leg animal and animals having more legs.

It was also described the heavenly life like the angles.

According to Kadek Satria, not all Hindu ceremonies in Bali used the sarad cake. The cake made like kayonan (mountain) was specially made for a grandiose ritual like padudusan agung used to purify nature. “It resembles kayonan as an aesthetic element symbolizing tattva (philosophy). Kayon is the beginning of story and literature,” he said.

Sarad was made by a particular person or artisan of the offerings.

Meanwhile, the colors in use were adjusted the diverse colors of nature.

In a grandiose ceremony, like padudusan agung, it was usually installed three days before the event or after the preparation of tawur offerings.

Many people also installed it by consensus of the committee or in appropriate with the situation.

In the mapedudus ritual, it was

presented along with sate tunggeh or sate tegeh. Afterward, the satay was then arranged to resemble how the sarad cake was prepared, but all the ingredients were made from pork.

The satay was arranged in such a way and had a meaning. At the bottom, there was a pig’s head as a symbol of rajas (preservation).

Sate tunggeh symbolized rajas while sarad symbolized sattva (creation). With the balance of sattva and rajas, the ritual was considered to be successful and ended properly.

Behind the sate tunggeh was usually put different types of offerings such as bagia pala kerti and penyegjeg symbolizing the content of nature presented by devotees to God. Kadek Satria said the philosophy of sate tunggeh was actually describing human life where it was completed with three qualities affecting the human life itself known as tri gunas consisting of sattva (creation), rajas (preservation) and tamas (destroyer).

Each guna existed in every human being, so that they were symbolized in the offerings. “By balancing sattva, rajas and tamas, it is believed that people can have reunion with God,” he explained.

Kadek Satria affirmed that when sattva, rajas and tamas attained balance, it would result in a good citta (heart, mind). “Here, we will be in balance called citta wretti nirodha, which means that with a balanced mind we attain happiness,” he said. City tour needs political support DENPASAR - Re-launching of the city tour program by the Denpasar Municipality through the Tourism Office gets appreciation from tourism stakeholders. Lebih Beach remains a favorite tourist object

SEMARAPURA - Even though having no overlay of sand, along the edge of Lebih Beach covered in stone breakwater remains to become a favorite object visited by the community to fill in their holiday. However, Jaya deeply regretted the current condition of Lebih Beach that does not have an overly of sand. “As a result of abrasion, this time the edge of Lebih Beach is covered in boulders. It no longer has an inch of sand for family to play. In my opinion, this is very unfortunate. In my childhood, the edge of the beach was far away in the south and the sand remained available right here,” he said while pointing to a row of breakwater.

In the meantime, a number of domestic travelers visiting this location can also pamper their tongue by tasting typical culinary of seafood offered on Lebih Beach. This can

be seen from every lesehan (lowdining table style) food stalls that line on seashore of Lebih Beach having been fully occupied by culinary connoisseurs.

I Wayan Panye, one of the food stall owners, admitted that even though passing the moment feast day, so far the increase in visitors remains to happen. “After feast days, his sales usually increased about 30 to 50 percent from usual days. Until now, though the holiday has gone, the increase remains to happen,” he said.

Pharmaceuticals’ warehouse burned, police deploy forensic team AMLAPURA - In order to determine the cause of great fire in the warehouse of pharmaceuticals of the Karangasem Health Agency, a further investigation was made again by the Karangasem Police, Saturday (Aug. 1). Investigators deployed a team of the Bali Police Forensic Laboratory.

It has not been known about chemical reactions that caused drug explosion followed by a fire in the warehouse next to the main building of the Karangasem Health Agency at Galiran, Friday afternoon (Jul. 31). In the meantime, the Head of the Karangasem Health Agency, IGM

Tirtayana, said that the losses due to the disaster were estimated to reach IDR 3.5 billion.

The warehouse of drug supplies for 12 public health centers in Karangasem was on fire and left ruins only. Tirtayana said that this year the Health Agency already completed the procurement of medicines to 12 public health centers valued at IDR 1.5 billion.

As reported earlier, the fire in the pharmaceutical warehouse began when seven employees of the Health Agency were working overtime to sort the expired drugs.

As planned, the officers were doing overtime until four o’clock in the afternoon.

Biden associates resume discussion about presidential run WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden’s associates have resumed discussions about a possible 2016 presidential run after largely putting aside such deliberations during his son’s illness and following his death earlier this year. But Biden has yet to tell his staff whether he will run or personally ask them to do any planning for a potential campaign, according to several people close to the vice president.

Recent conversations between Biden’s associates and Democratic donors and operatives have led to speculation that Biden will challenge front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton for the party’s nomination, and individuals close to Biden have started looking into what options might be available to him if he were to run, such as potential staff in the early-voting state of Iowa. Biden is expected to make a final decision as soon as early September, according to those familiar with his plans.

The people close to Biden spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deliberations.

The renewed focus on Biden

comes amid some signs of weakness for Clinton, including declines in her favorability among voters in recent polling. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is challenging Clinton for the Democratic nomination, has been attracting large crowds with a liberal economic message, evidence of a hunger within the party for an alternative to Clinton’s candidacy.

Biden’s entry could fundamentally reshape the dynamics of the Democratic primary elections.

Yet Clinton remains enormously popular among Democrats. She has raised nearly $50 million for her campaign.

There are few signs, meanwhile, that Biden is taking solid steps toward launching a campaign. He has had little interaction with a “draft

Kendra Barkoff, the vice president’s press secretary, said Biden was spending his time working on President Barack Obama’s agenda, not on planning his own potential presidential campaign.

“As the Biden family continues to go through this difficult time, the vice president is focused on his family and immersed in his work,” Barkoff said.

Biden’s son, Beau, died of brain cancer in May. The younger Biden’s death prompted an outpouring of support for the vice president, who also lost a daughter and his first wife in a car accident in 1972.

NEW YORK — Dozens of people stopped in Manhattan intersections gazing at photos of endangered animals shining on the side of the Empire State Building. Organizers say the Saturday night event was a first-of-its-kind live video projection.

It drew large crowds of spectators, many taking photos with their smartphones. Images of en-

dangered animals, including birds, tigers, bears and other creatures, shined on the south side of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The event was meant to spark conversations about mass extinction. African-American history and more in Harlem

NEW YORK — Decades of African-American history have made Harlem one of America’s most famous neighborhoods. It’s also an essential destination for visitors to New York, offering art, architecture, restaurants, shopping and more.

Attendance at Harlem’s Studio Museum has soared from 63,298 in the 2009-10 fiscal year to 111,086 in 2013-14. Restaurants like celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Streetbird Rotisserie are giving out-of-towners and locals a reason to head uptown for a meal.

And Harlem is the second-most requested neighborhood in Manhattan after midtown at Big Apple Greeter, which connects tourists

Ngerebong, a stabbing tradition at Kesiman Customary Village

DENPASAR - Ngerebong has become a tradition for the Kesiman customary village, Denpasar. A unique ritual called ngurek (stabbing kris dagger in the chest) is performed on the piodalan or anniversary of the Pangerebongan Temple falling every 210 days on Redite Pon Medangsia, Sunday (August 2) or eight days after Kuningan celebration.

In the ceremony, the customary villagers of Kesiman consisting of 33 hamlets became patih (intermediary of deities) for devotional works.

They put into trance and then take kris dagger to be stabbed in his chest. It is really horrible when the dagger, sharp and sacred objects, is stabbed in human chest. Ritual as a symbol of gratitude expression is carried out through a worship to sanctified effigies (Rangda, Ratu Ayu and Barong) in the temples of Kesiman customary village. After paying homage, some people carry the sanctified effigies.

The ritual is commenced by mapeed or parade procession to the temple where ngerebong is carried out and all the villagers put on customary attires. Each temple at Kesiman customary village takes out the sanctified effigies. There are also sanctified effigies from outside Kesiman that are engaged in the procession such as those from Pemogan, Singgi-Sanur, Suci Hamlet, Bali Beach, Sawangan-Bukit, Ubung, and some others.

Another unique tradition in this Pangerebongan ritual is cockfight performed by a group of people. When the cockfight taking place as a part of the ceremony, it looks like dominating the stabbing tradition. Meanwhile, the ngerebong itself is done by surrounding counter-clockwise the wantilan hall where people are holding cockfight.

Ngerebong has become a tradition for the Kesiman customary village, Denpasar. hamlet, one of the mediums (pedasaran) at Kesiman said the cockfight would cause the rooster to injure and bleed. Such blood sprinkle was then used as sacrifice locally known as tabuh rah as a series in the animal sacrifice ritual or mecaru.

The man usually called Gung Cut added that in the past when the gambling like ceki

cards and cockfight was prohibited intensively, the Kesiman customary village did not hold the tabuh rah or cockfight ritual.

However, what happened next was that all the intermediaries of the local deities (patih) were in trance and got injured by the kris dagger usually used to stab.

Another belief owned by Kesiman customary village was that people were not allowed to go out or travel during the day of Pangerebongan ritual. If people broke it, undesired thing might happen to them. (kmb)

Remains low, community attends higher education

MANGUPURA - The number of Indonesian society attending higher education is still relatively low. Not more than 20 percent of the people enjoy the education up to college. It was stated by the Rector of the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Ketut Suastika recently.

“I think there are many people that just completed primary school.

In contrary, in remote places most people have not been educated,” he said.

He hoped that the government’s attention to the education sector in Bali can be increased to catch up over the years. Moreover, ahead of local leader election 2015, the elected regents or mayor must have the favor of the education sector.

“We do hope the newly elected regents will remain to have a good relationship to the Udayana University and still want to assist in the matter of facilities related to education,” he hoped.

On the other hand, he said, the quality of education in Indonesia, including Bali, is far left behind compared to developed countries such as the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan. It is even still far behind Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Actually, the education sector becomes one of the determining progresses of a country, including the region.

Rector Prof. Suastika said that the education sector clearly has correlation with the progress of a nation. Evidently, the more educated people in a country, particularly at higher education, the more advanced the nation will be.

According to him, the underdevelopment of Bali in education sector should be caught up. “Few decades ago, we were more fabulous than Malaysia, but now in this competition we are far left behind.

Pulling out from local election, candidates threatened with sanction

Sluggish supply, price of chili soars BANGLI - Price of chili in traditional market has soared since the past few days. Moreover, the price per kg reaches IDR 42,000. This condition causes a number of traders to be confused for fear of plummeting turnover.

One of the traders at Kidul Market Bangli, I Nyoman Pasek, revealed on Saturday (Aug. 1), that the price of chili has increased since ten days ago and the surge is very significant. Earlier, the price of red chili was only around IDR 25,000 per kg. However, it has now become IDR 40,000 per kg.

Similarly, the price of green chili previously sold for IDR 15,000 per kg has soared to IDR 30,000. “The price increase occurred about ten days ago. Its surge is very significant,” he said.

He also added that soaring price happened as the supply of chili from outside Bali namely Java was sluggish since the Eid. Currently, he only gets supplies from local farmers. So far, the surge in prices has not affected his sales turnover. Nevertheless, he also

worried. “The supply of chili from outside Bali began sluggish since the Eid. As a result, I just rely on local supply. That’s what makes the price go up,” he said.

Similar comment was also revealed by another trader, Ni Ketut Rumani. The price of chili currently reaches IDR 42,000 per kg.

This is much higher than during recent holidays such as Galungan, Kuningan and the Eid reaching around IDR 25,000.

“The price of chili is even far higher than during holidays. By all means, it is on the contrary where during holidays the price is expensive,” she explained.

In the meantime, the price of large chili even declines, where previously it was sold for IDR 15,000 per kg but now reaches IDR 10,000 per kg. On the other

hand, related to the coming of dry season, the price of vegetables remains relatively stable. As well as the supply is relatively smooth.

The quality of chili, said Rumini, is still quite good. “The price of vegetable is still stable and the supply has no problem, not affected by drought,” she said.

When confirmed separately, the Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, I Nengah Sudibia, said that the increase in prices of some commodities may happen due to higher demand than supply. Associated with the sluggish supply, she said, it is alleged to happen due to a number of regions experiencing crop failure. “The supply from outside is a little, while the demand is a lot. MANGUPURA - After registering as a candidate of the regent and deputy regent of Badung in local election, Giri Prasta-Suiasa package and Sudiana-Sutrisno package are not allowed to pull out from the nomination. The Badung Electoral Commission (KPU) asserted that each candidate duo pulling out from the democratic event will be subject to criminal sanction.

“We will impose criminal sanctions and fines for the candidate duos pulling out after registering themselves to the Electoral Commission. It has been set forth in the Law No. 8/2015 regarding local elections,” said Chairman of the Badung Electoral Commission, A.A. Gede Raka Nakula.

According to him, as set forth in Article 191 of the law, criminal penalty imposed to candidates pulling out is imprisonment with the shortest of 24 months and a maximum of 60 months.

However, the candidate duos will automatically disqualify when failing to complete the requirements specified.

“Or the smallest fine is worth IDR 25 billion to IDR 50 billion.

This applies to governor, regent and mayor that deliberately pull out after registering themselves at the Electoral Commission.

However, the candidate duos will be automatically disqualified if they cannot meet the requirements, but so far the two candidate duos have qualified,” he explained.

It does not only apply to candidate duos of the regent and deputy regent. According to Nakula, the law on the election also applies to political parties and the coalition of political parties pulling out the candidate duo having been registered to the Badung Electoral Commission.

“Political parties and coalitions of political parties are also prohibited to pull out their candidate or their support. If it is committed, political parties will be unable to nominate the replacement of the previous candidate,” he said.

He further explained that the Badung Electoral Commission is currently carrying out data verification such as the diploma legality of each candidate. As has been known, in the organization of the Badung local election 2015, the government of Badung County has budgeted approximately IDR 33.6 billion. It is further divided that Electoral Commission received IDR 19.5 billion, Electoral Supervisory Board received IDR 5.2 billion and security budget got IDR 8.7 billion. (kmb27)

DENPASAR - Sanglah Hospital Forensic Medicine received the submission of victim who died while snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan, Friday (Jul. 31).

An external examination was immediately performed to the victim. Ida Bagus Putu Alit, from the Forensic Medicine, said on Saturday (Aug. 1) that the body is known to be Chinese citizen

on behalf of Ling Liao Hui, 47.

The victim is wearing a green T-shirt with a while line pattern and knee-length jeans.

The time of his death is suspected of less than eight hours.

Delicate white foam (mushroomlike mass) was found out of the oral cavity. In the meantime, there has been no autopsy request from police authority. (kmb42)

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon.

The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

ROME - Italian police stopped American rapper Snoop Dogg at Lamezia Terme airport on Saturday for trying to board a plane with over $420,000 in undeclared cash.

Police seized half the money and opened an investigation, local media said. The “Drop it like it’s hot” singer had performed two shows in the south of Italy and was on his way to the UK,

where he is slated to take to stage at the Kendal Calling Festival, according to the AGI news agency.

During a security check before the rapper boarded his private jet, police saw two bags full of cash, totalling $422,000 (384,000 euros).

Travellers within the European Union must declare any amount over 10,000 euros in cash as part of efforts to combat money laundering.

The artist cooperated with the au-

thorities and only asked that he could leave as soon as possible for London, local reports said.

According to AGI, four lawyers have been assigned to the case and Snoop Dogg will be able to reclaim the rest of his money after paying a fine.

YANGON — Angelina Jolie has joined Myanmar’s opposition leader and democracy icon, Aung San Suu Kyi, in sitting down with female workers to learn more about their dire conditions. Jolie, who is a special envoy for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, is on a four-day visit to the Southeast Asian nation.

During her meeting with the factory workers on the outskirts of an industrial zone in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, Jolie and Suu Kyi witnessed first-hand the conditions the women live in, mostly low-cost hostels. Jolie also toured inside the factory.

Charlize Theron adopts baby girl in US LOS ANGELES - South African-born actress Charlize Theron has adopted her second child, an African-American newborn named August, US media reported Saturday.

City tour program not supported by infrastructure

DENPASAR - The government of Denpasar is known to work on city tour package for the longest time. Now, the program is further strengthened to introduce cultural tourist destination in Denpasar to the public, especially to local and foreign travelers.

Denpasar Municipality through the Denpasar Tourism Office launched a tour package entitled “Denpasar Heritage City Tour,” Sunday (Mar. 29) in front of the Bali Museum.

However, the launching is considered premature. It is based on consideration that to date there is absolutely no indication of progress made by the Denpasar Municipality for the arrangement of physical

infrastructure.

“We greatly appreciate the plan of the Denpasar Municipality to sell city tour package. Unfortunately, there seems no preparation to support the city tour,” said one of the

legislators of the Denpasar House running the business in tourism sector, Putu Oka Mahendra. This Chairman of the Golkar Party Faction in the Denpasar House mentioned that to revive the city tour having been launched long time ago by the government must pay attention to a number of crucial components to support the city tour.

To that end, before launching it the Denpasar Municipality must make improvement or complete several public facilities such as toilets in the city tour package.

Arrangement of the park along the heritage city tour (Jagatnatha Temple-Bali Museum-Jaya SabhaCatur Muka Statue-Desa Temple and Pasar Badung) should be maximized.

Another member of the Golkar Faction also getting involved in tourism sector as a Japanese tourist guide, Wayan Suwirya, disclosed that to revive the city tour, the government must pay attention to a number of tourism components of tourism. One of them is the tour guide.

“Existence of the guide as tourism

practitioner that really understands about the intricacies of tourism excursion should be made a spearhead in the exciting the city tour package of Denpasar,” said Suwirya.
