January-July 2011 amounted to 2.87 percent,” he explained. He said the surge in the rice prices had been one of the dominant factors for the achievement of inflation rate in July. The surge itself remained in moderate range because the amount was still under one percent. Bali News Dog Bite Cases Decrease 50 Percent Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Knowing from 2008-2011 the number of death caused by rabies reached 131 people, there has been an increase people’s activeness in tackling and destroying rabies virus by a positive contribution in decreasing rabies cases in Bali as this past month. At least the decrease reach 50 percent totalling up to 80 cases on July 2011 compared to 172 cases in June 2011 as stated by Head of Bali Animal Husbandry Agency, Ir. Putu Sumantra, to Bali Post last Monday (1/8). According to Sumantra the realisation was mostly to those who have pet dogs did revaccination to their dogs. In the second step of door to door vaccination involved 147,245 dogs. “Vaccination activity was done to 3,045 banjar in Bali. It was also found many of pet dog owners did not let their dog go to the streets which is a factor to the decrease,” he explained.
To increase knowledge of the public on the danger of rabies, the Agency has intensified rabies socialisations in banjar and supported by FAO (Food Agricultural Organisation-red) which they prepare socialiser on each sub districts of Bali. “Workers got its training at Education Information Communication (KIE) Rabies held from 2-9 August 2011 in Denpasar,” he explained. Credit Card Robbery Revealed Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Four accused of a credit card robbery case, Agus Rianto (48), I Ketut Suarjana (39), Mas Hamsyah Muslich (35) and Bambang Sumantri (36) are now under the hands of Kuta Police along with evidences. Yet besides them there are still another two groups that committed crime in another area as explained by Head of Kuta Police, APC I Gede Ganefo, SH, MH last Monday (1/8). Ganefo explained Hamsyah and Sumantri was captured on Saturday (30/7) at 12.30 pm local time after a report the two accused were buying cigarettes at Hypermart Carrefour, Sunset Road, Kuta, Badung using someone else’s credit card as when identity was asked accused couldn’t produce it to the worker of the Hypermart. Besides that worker then asked for his other cards which an ATM card was shown. Asked to be liquefied, accused didn’t do it and bought something else in another shop
with the credit card. For that he was captured by the mall’s security and forwarded to Kut Police. Hours later another similar report was received from Hypermart Galeria, By Pass Ngurah Rai, Kuta, Badung where Rianto and Suarjana was revealed. Accused Rianto was buying two Blackberry phones by using a credit card. When the receipt was signed by accused, it didn’t match to the one in the credit card’s identity and so Hypermart security asked why it isn’t. After a long explanation, Hypermart then report it to Kuta Police and capture accused around 7.13 pm local time. “It was found out later that the credit card was received from Suarjana as Rianto request if he found a credit card he will liquify it straight away,” Ganefo explained. Due Suarjana wasn’t in scene anymore, Police then found him at his living place at P. Galang Street, Denpasar. Suarjana admitted to have found the credit card at Legian Street, Kuta. (kmb21)

Emergence of violence in Bali, according to the Dean of Law Faculty of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. IGN Wairocana, was caused by dissatisfaction of the public with law enforcement. The officials considered to have been unjust and seemed discriminative in providing the expected justice had triggered arrogant nature. “Due to dissatisfaction with the law, people tend to look for justice by themselves such as by vigilante and solving the problems by violence without regard to the existing rules,” said Prof. Wairocana in Denpasar on Monday (Aug 1). In addition to these factors, the harsh character and fanaticism of ‘Balinese people’, said Prof. Wairocana, also kindled the emergence of suryak siu (blind determination) behavior, kulkul bulus (pounding wooden bell) as fre-
quently happened in the customary cases or disputes among the customary groups lately. “It is required a community leader and religious leader who can give enlightenment to the community. Due to the existence of violence cases among the people, Bali that has been known for friendliness and courtesy will fade,” he said. Security apparatus especially police also had contribution in any riots in Bali. According to Prof. Wairocana, police were less vigilant in anticipating the subsequent measures of the community being in violent so the problems occurred would last protractedly. Meanwhile, Dr. IGW Murjana Yasa assessed that economic problem and the high mobility rate of population in Bali was one of the triggers of conflict taking place among the fellows and
community groups lately. This Department Head of Economic Development, Faculty of Economics, Udayana University, said that restricted and imbalanced job opportunities with the population growth of job seekers could lead to unemployment, poverty, deviant behavior, crime and social insecurity. “The unjust economic growth has kindled a remarkable gap between the rich and the poor. This extraordinary striking difference is the source of emergence of a variety of deviant behaviors such as crime and inter-community clash,” he said. Few regional migrants lost their control so they could no longer think healthily. Such a condition caused them to be easily influenced to do negative deeds that were going up against the social norms and legal norms. (par)

Potential to exacerbate environmental damage
BHA plans must be assessed throughoughly THE plan of hoteliers under Bali Hotels Association (BHA) to drill underground water on the outskirts of the sea at a certain depth must be studied carefully. The activities of the hoteliers in meeting the needs of clean water can potentially exacerbate the environmental damage in Bali. The warning was revealed by the Head of Bali Environment Agency (BLH) AA Gede Alit Sastrawan to Bali Post when contacted on Monday (Aug 1). Alit Sastrawan affirmed the taking of underground water in a large scale to meet the needs of the hotel industry should be undertaken extra carefully and precisely. Before drilling, the hoteliers were obliged to equip themselves with the document of Environmental Management Efforts/Environmental Monitoring Effort (UKL/UPL) and taking permit of the regent/mayor. Obviously, publication of the document was not as easy as turning the palm of the hand but had to pass a series of thorough studies and research. “Before realizing the plan, it must be preceded with an extra careful study. Moreover, there has been indication of seawater intrusion at a number of points on the beach side in Bali. If it is not carried out carefully, the plans made by hoteliers will potentially exacerbate the extent of damage to the environment in Bali,” he reminded. According to Alit Sastrawan, the effort to fulfill the needs of clean water did not necessarily have to do with the taking of underground wa-
ter that was susceptible to trigger a complex environmental problem. In this context, it would be more comfortable if the need of clean water was supplied by surface water such as taking advantage of wasted river water running into the sea by processing it into clean water. For this purpose, local government of Bali had already been designing a project for Sarbagitaku water supply covering the five regencies and municipality in Bali namely Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan and Klungkung. Later on, the processing of Sarbagitaku raw water would utilize the abundant river water in the river downstream that was ready to dispose into the sea. By doing so, it would not interfere with the water availability for agricultural irrigation and so on. “Instead of taking the underground water, hoteliers will be better to help government immediately realize the Sarbagitaku program. Obviously, this solution is far safer and friendlier to the environment,” he said. (ian)
Sewage of street vendors complained by communities Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The handling of wastewater produced by street vendors scattered at night began to reap some complaints. It is triggered by the poor handling of wastewater. Similarly, this condition also causes Denpasar area polluted by wastewater of street vendors. “It must be properly managed to make Denpasar clean and better,” said Dewa Gede Ambara, a resident of Denpasar on Monday (Aug 1). Ambara said that a number of street vendors, such as the vendors of mixed vegetable stew, fried rice and other dishes usually did selling in front of stores. They started selling after the store was closed when the night fell. “It will also need a commitment of the shop owners not to rent out their shop to street vendors,” he hoped. It was mentioned the waste produced by street vendors like that was quite a lot because they did activities at that location, either for cleaning the dishes and leftovers or cooking. In other words, such activities would result in the remains of food and other liquid wastes. Meanwhile, they did not have good waste management system. In response to this condition, the Head of Denpasar Environment
Agency (BLH), AA Bagus Sudharsana, when asked for his confirmation admitted there were complaints from the public related to waste produced by some street vendors in Denpasar. However, his party could not perform any controlling action because the land had been contracted by the store owner. On that account, his party could only appeal the store owners not to contract their shop, moreover, if the vendors did not have a good waste management system. In the meantime, the Regional Secretary of Denpasar, AA Ngurah Rai Iswara, asked the shop owners to keep their environment clean, both in the morning and at night. “We have been strict in issuing the building permits. Actually, it is intended to avoid such cases,” he said. He said the store or building owners located on the roadside when filing the license should comply with the boundary line of the road. However, when the permit had been obtained, the existing boundary lines were contracted again, so the face of the city turned chaotic. “We hope the store or building owners do not do such an action, so the city remains to look clean at night,” he hoped. Kerobokan Beach Natural area maintained by customary village THERE are a few beaches on the north Bali worth categorizing into a beautiful and natural beach that have not been disturbed by large investment. One of them is Kerobokan Beach located in the subdistrict of Sawan. In fact, this black sandy and clean beach remains well guarded by the customary villagers of Kerobokan. If the object was developed into a tourist resort, it was not exploited in a large scale. Even, it has been preserved independently by local community. Although it is not known as a tourist object, Kerobokan Beach is always crowded by visitors every day just for sitting around, fishing, or savoring grilled seafood in the local tatami-style food stalls. Interestingly, the crowds are still managed appropriately by customary village. If there is patchwork improvement here and there, the development in the region does not damage the beauty of the beach. Kerobokan Customary Village only arranges the parking area by doing arrange-
ment and security maintenance of visitors. Additionally, local customary villagers also develop the potential by coral reef transplantation. All activities are carried out hand in hand by the officials of administrative village with the officials of customary village. Even, if there are grilled fish stalls in the coastal region, they are all done in a very simple management. Premises are provided by customary village authority and then offered to villagers who want to open a business. They are leased to customary villagers in turns every three years. All revenues obtained from the potential are developed by customary village and then returned again to finance the religious activities every year. Nevertheless, the results do not yet cover the entire cost of ceremonials held every year such as in the village trinity temples and other ceremonies like exorcism, melasti procession and Nyepi. Chief of Kerobokan Customary Village, Wayan Sumawijaya, said that his party indeed still managed the coastal areas independently.
However, his party expected the government intervention in managing the region due to limited amount of money owned by customary village. “The arrangement of Kerobokan Beach area cannot be fully worked on by the village. On that account, we remain to expect the assistance of government,” he said. With regard to coral reef transplantation, the customary village had collaboration with the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Agency. The type of artificial corals installed was in the shape of crocodile cake and dome. Then, supervision against those artificial coral reefs was entrusted to Rukun Sejati fishermen group. Expectedly, the development of coral reefs could enrich the tourist attraction in Kerobokan Beach other than the existing marine activity in the form of canoeing. “Later, we will follow up with our fishermen groups. For a while, we do not do any activities around the cultivation of artificial coral reefs,” said Wayan Kanton, Chief of Kerobokan Village. (ole)

AMMAN - The death toll in Syria’s violent crackdown on opposition to President Bashar alAssad in the city of Hama and elsewhere climbed on Tuesday, spurring Western efforts to pile diplomatic pressure on Damascus. Tanks pounded residential neighborhoods across Hama, the scene of a 1982 massacre, after evening prayers on Monday, the first day of Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month, witnesses said. Human rights campaigners said assaults by Assad’s forces across Syria overnight and on Monday had killed at least 24 civilians, including 10 in Hama, where troops and tanks began a violent operation to regain control on Sunday. That brought the total to about 134 dead throughout Syria in the past three days, 90 of them in Hama, according
to witnesses, residents and rights campaigners. Syria’s state news agency said “armed terrorist groups” had killed eight policemen in Hama. The government blames such groups for most killings in the five-month-old revolt, saying more than 500 soldiers and security personnel have died. The plight of Hama has prompted many Syrians to stage solidarity marches since the start of Ramadan, but Assad’s tough response suggests he will resist calls for change that have swept Syria and much of the Arab world this year. Syria has incurred international opprobrium for its harsh measures, but need not fear the kind of foreign military intervention that NATO launched to back rebels in Libya. The top U.S. military officer called for a swift end to violence in Syria, but only diplomatic pressure was in view.

Panama police make massive heroin seizure Associated Press Writer
PANAMA CITY — Panamanian police seized more than half a ton of heroin on the Caribbean coast, the largest seizure of the drug in the country’s history, an official said Monday. Anti-drug prosecutor Javier Caraballo said police found the heroin inside an abandoned truck parked along a road in the remote coastal town of Gobea on Saturday. The drug was in 639 packages each package apparently weighing about
one kilogram. The shipment originated in South America and was heading to North America, Caraballo said without giving any more details. Drug gangs are active in most of Central America and are increasingly using the region to ship drugs and launder money. Caraballo said authorities are still investigating whether the large heroin shipment is an isolated case or if drug traffickers are changing their way of trafficking drug, which in the region is usually done by people taping small
packages to their bodies. The heroin seizure is the largest in Panama and in all of Central America where authorities seized 123 kilograms (270 pounds) in 2009, according to the latest available data from the United Nation’s World Drug Report.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEIJING — China’s bullet train was supposed to signal its arrival as a high-tech leader. Instead, a crash that killed at least 40 people has made it a lightning rod for anger at the human cost of recklessly fast development. On the Internet and in normally docile state media, the July 23 disaster triggered outrage about China’s drumbeat of deaths from bridge and schoolhouse collapses, coal mine explosions, tainted milk and other disasters. “I can’t tell whether the current society is moving forward or backward. If it’s moving forward, why does it have to be paid for in lives?” said a comment on the popular Sina.com microblog site, signed Countryman Shen Xiaobao. The crash is especially sensitive for communist leaders because it hurt members of China’s urban middle class, who are among the chief beneficiaries of the booming economy and an important base of support for the Communist Party’s continued monopoly on power. The bullet train, based on German and Japanese systems, is one facet of far-reaching government technology ambitions that call for developing a civilian jetliner, a Chinese mobile phone standard and advances in areas from nuclear power to genetics. Even before the crash, highspeed rail was a target for critics
who said it was too expensive and unsuited to China, where GDP per person was $4,200 last year and many families live on less than that. They say the country’s poor majority need cheaper tickets, not recordsetting speeds of 300 kph (190 mph) and above. OSLO, Norway — The confessed killer in Norway’s twin terror attacks that claimed 77 lives has presented a long list of “unrealistic” demands, including the resignation of the government and that his mental condition be investigated by Japanese specialists, his defense lawyer said Tuesday. Surabaya immigration to deport 34 Chinese nationals Antara
SURABAYA - The Surabaya Special First Class Immigration Office will deport 34 Chinese nationals for visa violations. “The aim of the visit in Surabaya is not clear and they have no jobs Surabaya. No one pay for their life cost. So, we have decided to deport them,” Muhammad Desri, an official of the Surabaya immigration office, said here on Monday. The Chinese nationals had earlier been grilled by the Surabaya police as witnesses in fraud and blackmailing cases. They have stayed in Surabaya for the last two or three months, and
what they have done so far just sleep and eat with no jobs. They are holding tourist visas with limited stay duration. “They do have passports, but the problem is with their visas, because they are holding tourist visas,” he said. Their deportation will be conducted in two stages. Some 27 people will be sent back to China on Tuesday Morning (August 2). Of the 27 people, 14 will take an airplane through Cengkareng airport in Jakarta, and 13 through Surabaya airport. The remaining seven Chinese nationals will be deported on Wednesday (August 3).
“Part of the travel cost will be born by the Chinese embassy. They will be deported on Tuesday and Wednesday,” Desri said. The Surabaya Police‘s investigation unit chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Indarto said the status of the 34 Chinese nationals were victim witnessed. The police were still investigating an alleged fraud case involving someone identified by his initial A in Jakarta. “A had brought (the 34 Chinese nationals) here. But we are still investigating the case and has not issued a warrant,” Indarto said. The 34 foreigners consist of 22 men and 12 women.

TOMOHON - Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi on Tuesday erupted again, spewing volcanic ashes from its Tompaluan crater into the air as high as 250 meters, volcanic monitoring post spokesman Jemmy Runtuwene said here on Tuesday. “Since 4.21 am Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA) until 11 on Tuesday morning, the volcano has erupted ten times,” Runtuwene said. He said that because it was classified into minor eruptions, the emergency status of Mt Lokon has yet to be raised or lowered to alert level because the eruptions did not threaten the settlements and activi-
ties of people in a radius of 3 kilometers of the Tompaluan crater. Since July 10, 2011 Mt Lokon has erupted, prompting thousands of people to evacuate to safer areas. It was then followed by a major eruption on July 14 and caused forest fires around the mountain. Then on July 17 it erupted again and spewed hot ash as high as 3,000 meters. Runtuwene said the eruption at that time was higher than the previous ones, although it only spewed volcanic ash and not hot lava. Due to the eruptions, around 1,355 families of 4,868 people from the villages of Kinilow I, Kakaskasen, Tinoor I and II and Rungku Wailan were forced to evacuate.
Until three weeks after the first eruption, some 287 evacuees from Kinilow and Kinilow I villages in Tomohon Utara sub-district have yet to be permitted to return to their houses. “They are still in refugee camps for safety reasons,” Tomohon emergency response spokesman Arnold Poli said here on Tuesday. He said the remaining evacuees were still accommodated at Taman Kota because their villages were prone to the danger of hot clouds of a volcanic eruption. “We are afraid of hot clouds because minor eruptions continue to happen and therefore we have not permitted the evacuees to return to their villages,” Poli said.

Ifan said that if infrastructure was well prepared business players would increase the capacity of their production. With better infrastructure, he said, transportation cost would be cheap and the availability of stocks would be bigger. Apart from that foreign capital in the domestic market would also vary, not only made in stocks exchange, money market, bonds and Bank Indonesia instruments, but also in the real sector. When the real sector is growing it will enhance employment and provide bigger income for workers, he said. He said that the big volumes of foreign capital inflows had driven the rate of stocks index almost reaching 4,200 points.

Besides, the government should also be able to provide the needed electricity and gas so that foreign and domestic investors would be able to overcome the problems of their investment. “We are optimistic that the government would be able to increase its gas supplies for domestic needs such as in Tanggul Papua,” he said. Yet, he said, the Indonesian economy will continue to grow even if it is overshadowed by policy, legal and political uncertainties. Indonesia landslide at Freeport gold mine kills 1 Associated Press Writer
JAKARTA - Police say a landslide has killed an Australian engineer working at Freeport’s gold and copper mine in eastern Indonesia. Police spokesman Col. Wachyono says the man was driving near the Grasberg mine in easternmost Papua province early Tuesday when a wall of mud pushed his car into a 450-foot (150-meter) -deep ravine. Rescuers have reached the scene but have been unable so far to retrieve the body. Freeport, which boasts some of the world’s largest gold and copper reserves, could not immediately be reached for comment. Wachyono, who like many Indonesians uses one name, says the victim was an engineer for Redpath, a Canadian company that works for the Grasberg mine.

The Head of Export Division in Bali Trade and Industrial Department, Putu Bagiada said that the number of bag export from Bali was 109,276 pieces worth $228,000 during January through May 2011 period. The volume of export was increasing compare to the similar period last year which was 60,282 worth $120,000. Bagiada stated that the craftsmen in Bali always created new design and measure which is prepared to enter the export market. The tourism condition was also affecting the export realization from Bali which was increasing 7.6% became $87.2 million during January through May 2011 period. The handicrafts from Bali are exported to at least 77 countries throughout the world but mostly to US, European countries, Japan, Australia, and several Asian coun-
tries, Bagiada stated. Meanwhile, Murniatini, a seller of Balinese handicrafts in Bali Souvenir Market, said that the craftsmen are always trying to create new design so it is suitable with the current trend. The bags which are not suitable for exports will be sell to the domestic tourists during Lebaran Day. “The craftsmen are making bags with various materials such as bamboo and cloth combine with beads which are going to be exported,” Murniatini said. She hopes that there are many domestic tourists come to Bali during the Lebaran holiday.

Archaeological heritage In Bali Archaeological researches in Bali have found a number of archeological heritages, which belonged to prehistoric and historic remains. Prehistoric remains proved the earliest of the people’s life, started from hunting and food gathering through cultivation up to mastering the advanced technology. The humanmask decoration, showed a remarkable similarities to the decorations of the huge kettledrums found in the village of Pejeng not so far of the east of Manuaba, but the stone moulds of Manuaba are small in its size.

It should be noted here that bronze kettledrums were not only found in Bali, but also in Java, and Eastern Indonesian Island. Another bronze moulds made of clay were also found in West Java, but not for producing kettledrums, but for making spearheads, axes, etc. Regarding the humanmask decorations, which were founds on the kettledrums of Pejeng, on the stone moulds of Manuaba and on the number of the sarcophagi found in Bali, was regarded as symbol of the leader’s or the ancestor’s spirits. Along with the development of the metallic industry, the megalithic tradition increased not only in Bali, but also in Sumatera, Flores etc. Several kinds of megalithic remains were founds there namely menhirs, dolmens, menhirstatues, stepped pyramids etc. It is a matter of facts that the megalithic tradition have strongly influenced the people’s life and it is not surprising any more that living megalithic tradition could be found until to present day in Nias, Toraja, Bali and Eastern Indonesians Islands. In Bali, the megalithic remains, exe the sar-
cophagi are regarded as sacred monuments and functioned for worshipping thje Hindu Trinity, the local deities and the ancestor’s spirit (Sutaba 1984). Researches on the advanced technology and on the megalithic tradition in Bali in particular, have made conclusions that Balinese people have build their social organization headed by the leaders. The well organizations have made favorable conditions for mastering the advance technology. Then the social and cultural development became the solid foundation for facing the new era when Hinduism arrived in Bali (Sutaba, 1930). Bali have got Hindu-Budhis influences nearly at the 9 century A.D. as Proved by the finding of clay stuphikas and seals beared Budhis formula, near the village of Pejeng, Gianyar. Then a pillar inscription was rediscovered in Blanjong Sanur (Badung) which mentioned the name of the king Kesari Warmadewa. This inscription was originated from c.10 century A.D. Since this period, Hinduism was spread widely in Bali and went deeply into the life of the Balinese people and then survived until today. Having well developed social organization and cultural life before the arrival of Hinduism, have led the Balinese people successfully modified the new elements in accordance with their characters and became the new one beared Balinese identity. The wellknown king of Bali is a couple royal named king Udayana and his wife Gunapryadharmapati (c.10 century A.D), then succeeded
by their families. During the ancient history of Bali, a number of temples were built nearly in the whole island. In these temple several kinds of historical remains were preserved e.g. statues, inscriptions etc. As the follower of Hinduism, Balinese people regard the temples including the remains in them as sacred monuments for worshiping the Hindu pantheons, the local deities and the ancestor’s spirit as well. This religious function was the responsibility of the Balinese people for keeping the monuments in well conditions and the welfare of the living society. Based on the evidence found in Bali there were thousand tamples, which then named Bali as “The Island of Thousand Temples” or “The Island of Paradise”. Most of the old temples are located in the village between the two rivers called Pakerisan and Petanu namely the village of Bedulu, Pejengand Tampaksiring (Gianyar). It is remarkable that the temples found here originated from different period, e.g. Pura Goa Gajah, Yeh Pulu relief (Bedulu); Pura Kebo Edan, Pura Pusering Jagat, Pura Penataran Sasih, Pura Ukur-ukuran, rock cut temple Kelebutan (Pejeng); rock cut Gunung Kawi, Pura Megening, Pura Tirtha Empul, Pura Pegulingan etc (Tampaksiring). The densities of archaeological remains in Pejeng have led the archeologist to conclude that probably Pejeng washed capital of the ancient Balinese Kingdom. (BTN/Doc)

Balinese Culture Unique, Nyepi Kasa at Buahan Customary Village Lonely and tranquil atmosphere was clearly perceived when entering the area of Buahan customary village, Payangan, Gianyar, Friday (Jul 1). A number of motorcycles and cars had to turn back because the road section to Kintamani, Bangli, was closed by the apparatus of Buahan customary village marking the celebration of Nyepi Kasa activity organized by local customary village. What’s the difference from the Nyepi in other region? Around 345 families at Buahan customary village were solemnly carrying out the Nyepi (Day of Silence) activity just like the implementation of Nyepi usually held in Sasih Kedasa or tenth month in Balinese calendar. The Nyepi Kasa (first month) is only valid for Buahan customary village.
On this silent day, all residents are also prohibited to carry out any activities, travel and activities associated with the use of fire at Buahan Village. Chief of Buahan customary village, Putu Suteja, said that Nyepi Kasa was held based on tradition through generations. Implementation of Nyepi Kasa was the same as Nyepi Kedasa. “One day prior to Nyepi Kasa, all residents undertake Pengerupukan activities preceded by execution of tawur agung exorcism by sacrificing a calf as well as ogohogoh or papier mache demon parade in the evening,” he explained. No single resident dared to oppose the implementation of this tradition. Pursuant to local belief, if it was not executed accordingly, it was worried to result in an epidemic.
Based on oral stories of old people at Buahan village, people were afraid of the incident so the Nyepi Kasa tradition was organized until now. Nyepi Kasa tradition surviving at Buahan Village was also held in relation to piodalan or temple anniversary of Dalem Jemeng. In the Jemeng Temple lies a Ceta shrine sanctified by local residents. One of the obligatory processions before the anniversary was the Nyepi Kasa. It was undertaken from 06:00 a.m. and ended at 7:00 p.m. marked by the sound of kulkul (wooden split drum) of the village. “After hearing the sound of kulkul, the Nyepi Kasa implementation is over, road access is then re-opened and all activities could be resumed as usual,” he said. Mix the flour with sugar, grated coconut and salt evenly, and knead them for a while. However, do not do it until sticky. Preheat the pan in small flames. Next, smear the pan by oil so it will not be sticky. Take some three tablespoons of batter and put in the center of pan. Then, spread it evenly until reaching a diameter of some 10-15 centimeters while pressing it by vegetable spoon. When it has been cooked, turn over and put the sugar sauce onto it. Ultimately, fold it in triangular form. Alternatively the sugar sauce can be placed after the piece of cake is taken out from the pan. Afterward, it is folded as above. Now, it is ready to serve! BUSINESS Growth concerns drive stocks, Euro lower Reuters
LONDON - World stocks hit a two-week low on Tuesday as markets’ focus turned back to weak global growth prospects and the euro zone’s debt troubles after a U.S. budget deal that will knock more than $2 trillion off public sector spending in coming years. Sluggish global manufacturing data on Monday added to concerns about the world economic recovery, while concerns that Spain and Italy will be the next victims of the euro zone crisis drove yields to 14-year highs. An 11th-hour deal to raise the U.S. debt ceiling cleared its biggest hurdle in the House of Representatives, staving off the prospect of a default. But fears persisted Washington could still lose its triple-A credit rating. Figures on Monday showed U.S. manufacturing grew at its slowest pace in two years in July. “The macroeconomic figures that we saw have certainly given investors serious considerations to question the speed of global economic recovery,” said Keith Bowman, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. “In the background, we have got the rating agencies’ potential comments on the U.S. credit rating.” Standard & Poors has warned there is a 50-50 chance the United
States would lose its triple-A rating within three months unless it delivers meaningful deficit reduction. MSCI world equity index fell for a fourth straight day, losing 0.6 percent on the day. European stocks hit a 9-month low while Italian shares fell to 27-month troughs. “The fear of the market is that the world is going into recession again... and in the euro zone the peripheral markets are the ones that will suffer most,” said Alessandro Giansanti, strategist at ING in Amsterdam. Emerging stocks dropped 1.3 percent. U.S. crude oil fell 0.7 percent. Bund futures rose 50 ticks. The dollar rose 0.4 percent against a basket of major currencies while the euro fell 0.6 percent. The U.S. currency lost a quarter percent to 77.19 yen, having come within a few ticks of its record low on Monday. Players are watching closely for signs of Japanese authorities moving to intervene to cool the
yen’s rise. The 10-year Spanish government bond yield rose to 6.47 percent, its highest since 1997, pushing its yield premium over benchmark German Bunds to 403 bps. The Italian 10-year BTP yields was also up by a similar amount at 6.27 percent. The two countries have been under increased pressure in recent weeks as markets feel the size of the euro zone’s EFSF bailout fund is too small to protect large fringe economies if contagion from the Greek crisis cannot be stopped. Weakening global recovery momentum also meant it would become harder for peripheral countries to service their debt. “The positive tone seems to have evaporated after the ISM figures yesterday ... and 6 percent was seen as a line in the sand for Italian yields and now that that’s gone people don’t want any risk apart from Germany,” a euro zone bond trader said.

ROME - Italian authorities will meet on Tuesday, officials said, to discuss growing market turmoil that threatens to push the country’s borrowing costs to unsustainable levels, dragging it into a full-blown fiscal crisis. The meeting of the Financial Stability Committee — made up of representatives from the economy ministry, the Bank of Italy, market regulator Consob and insurance authority ISVAP — comes as markets threaten to turn on the euro zone’s third largest economy. Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti is expected to chair the meeting, which will also be attended by Treasury director general Vittorio Grilli via conference call, an official with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. On Tuesday, the yield spread on Italian 10-year BTP bonds against
German Bunds widened to a eurolifetime record of 385 points, with yields on Italy’s 10-year bonds climbing above 6 percent, a level generally seen as unsustainable in the long term. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who has said little in public since bond yields began climbing last month, is due to address parliament on the crisis on Wednesday. Despite having one of the euro zone’s heaviest debt burdens at 120 percent of gross domestic product, Italy has largely stood on the sidelines of the euro zone debt crisis thanks to a relatively modest deficit and a conservative financial system. But doubts about the government’s ability to hold the line on debt and implement the kinds of tough reforms needed to spur its stagnant economy into growth have caused growing alarm on financial markets.

TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp reported its first quarterly loss in two years on Tuesday as Japan’s biggest earthquake hammered production and a strong yen hit export profits, and the company raised its profit forecast on a speedy recovery. The supply constraints from the March 11 earthquake have eased faster than initially feared and Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker, said unrestricted production would return in September, about two months ahead of a previous forecast. But the dollar’s drop is set to further eat into profits as Toyota exports more than half of its vehicles produced in Japan, and an executive warned that Toyota’s domestic operations would struggle to claw out of the red at current exchange rates. “The first impression is not bad. A company that can generate such a level of profit at a dollar/yen rate of 80 yen doesn’t look bad,” said Takashi Aoki, vice president of the equity investment division at Mizuho Asset Management. “But it’s hard to say if this is good news for its stock performance because factors outside the company’s efforts, such as the yen exchange rate and the U.S. sovereign debt issue, will have a bigger impact. I’m personally closely looking at the yen level.” The world’s biggest automaker made an operating loss of 108 billion yen ($1.4 billion) in the April-June quarter, compared to a 211.7 billion yen profit a year earlier. The result was better than the average loss estimate of 190 billion yen in a survey of six analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The maker of the Prius and Camry sedans posted a net profit of 1.2 billion yen compared to a 190.5 billion yen net profit the previous year. Revenue fell 29.4 percent to 3.44 trillion yen. For the full year to March 2012, Toyota raised its forecast for operating profit, which excludes earnings from China, to 450 billion yen. A poll of 20 analysts produced a forecast of 529.7 billion yen. Even before the March disaster and the yen’s recent surge, Toyota had been trying to slash costs by roughly 30 percent to take on South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co, which has boosted its market share globally in recent years by offering quality products at competitive prices. With the dollar around 77.7 yen, Toyota executives have warned that keeping as much production capacity as it has in Japan was illogical, although they have stopped short of flagging a politically sensitive shift overseas. Toyota said it would try to raise product prices as much as possible to counter the yen, but admitted it would be difficult because of the inroads the competition is making into its market share. Toyota will try to fight the yen’s strength by buying more parts overseas, a move that Senior Managing Officer Takahiko Ijichi warned could indirectly shift Japanese manufacturing overseas through the component supply chain. “I think that in some ways, our history has been defined by a constant battle against currency swings and it’s made us stronger,” Ijichi told a news conference. “But this (dollar) level below 80 yen, of 76 yen, is way beyond the limit.” Toyota said it now assumes a dollar rate of 80 yen instead of 82 yen this financial year and the euro at 116 yen instead of 115 yen. On Tuesday, the dollar was trading around 77.35 yen while the euro was around 110.25 yen. Ijichi noted that the dollar had weakened by 16-17 yen from April last year, meaning that for a $20,000 car sold in the United States, Toyota’s gross profit would be $3,000 less. Toyota has said it will continue taking steps to lower the cost structure of its domestic operations to keep at least 3 million vehicles of annual production in Japan in the interest of protecting Japanese jobs and manufacturing. Last month, it announced plans to streamline vehicle development and production through a reorganization of its car assembly units. Shares in Toyota are down 1.9 percent so far this calendar year, underperforming a 3.8 percent drop in the benchmark Nikkei average. Before the results were announced on Tuesday, Toyota shares closed down 0.3 percent at 3,160 yen in Tokyo.

I’m somewhere in between but I’ll let the audience gauge on how good that is and hopefully the show allows me to sing a real song,” says Shum. The character of Mike Chang was introduced in season one with very little dialogue. Shum describes him as starting off as a background character who would dance and make facial expressions. He would be happy if the camera cut to him periodically for a reaction shot. He’s slowly gotten more screen time and was recently upgraded from recurring to a regular cast member. As for his “Glee” co-stars, Shum says he’s not sure if anyone will leave the series at the end of the third season. (There have been conflicting reports about some of the actors leaving the show because their characters graduate from high school.) “I think we’ll find out very, very soon but I think the main focus, instead of what’s happening on season four, should be season three,” says Shum. “Glee” returns Sept. 21 on Fox. LOS ANGELES — The first close-up pictures of the massive asteroid Vesta reveal a northern hemisphere littered with craters — including a trio nicknamed “Snowman” — and a smoother southern half, researchers reported Monday. Running along the asteroid’s equator are deep grooves — a surprise to scientists who did not expect to see such features. “We’re seeing quite a varied surface,” said chief scientist Christopher Russell of the University of California, Los Angeles. The images were taken by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which began orbiting the 330-milewide rocky body last month and beaming back incredible surface details that the team is only beginning to pore over. It’s the first time that Vesta has been viewed up close. Until now, it has only been photographed from afar. Since entering orbit, Dawn has taken more than 500 pictures,
while refining its path and inching ever closer to the surface to get a better view. The probe will officially start collecting science data next week once it is 1,700 miles from the surface. It will get as close as 110 miles while it orbits Vesta for a year. Vesta’s southern section is dominated by a giant crater, the result of a collision eons ago that’s believed to have pelted Earth with numerous meteorites, or broken off pieces of asteroids. The northern side is filled with older craters including three that scientists dubbed “Snowman.” Vesta is “so rich in features” that it will keep scientists busy for years, said Holger Sierks, of the Max Planck Society in Germany, who helps operate the camera.a Currently some 117 million miles from Earth, Vesta is the second-largest resident of the asteroid belt, a zone between Mars and Jupiter filled with hundreds of thousands of space rocks orbiting the sun. The belt formed some 4.5 billion years ago around the same time and under similar conditions as Earth and the inner planets.

WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating whether a dead man in the Pacific Northwest is D.B. Cooper, who hijacked a passenger jet in 1971 over Washington state and parachuted with $200,000 in ransom. Cooper has never been found. FBI agent Fred Gutt said Monday the bureau is following up a “credible” lead in the unsolved case and is focused on a suspect who died more than 10 years ago. Gutt said the bureau received a tip from a retired law enforcement source about the dead man possibly being Cooper. FBI agents requested personal effects of the possible suspect, who died of natural
causes. The FBI is trying to find fingerprints or DNA on the dead man’s effects to compare with items the hijacker left behind. The FBI said three years ago that it found DNA evidence on the clip-on tie Cooper left on the plane before he jumped. Gutt said the FBI has already tested one item of the dead man’s belongings for fingerprints. It was not conclusive. They are now working with surviving family members to gather other items for further testing. The suspect is someone who has not been previously investigated, and Gutt said initial vetting supported the belief of the tipster. But he cautioned that the new lead may not pan out and that investigators were still pursuing other possibilities.
“Maybe this is just someone else who just happened to look like him and whose life story just kind of paralleled,” Gutt said. Gutt said the new lead is also promising because of the way it came to the FBI. The tipster initially discussed the case with a retired law enforcement officer who then contacted the FBI. Only after the FBI contacted the witness directly did the person discuss the Cooper case with investigators. “They’re not seeking attention,” Gutt said. “To the contrary, they’re looking to avoid it.” Federal investigators have checked more than 1,000 leads since the suspect bailed out on Nov. 24, 1971, over the Pacific Northwest.

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil - England should be invited to play Brazil to mark the opening of the Mineirao World Cup Stadium despite the animosity Brazilian FA President Ricardo Teixeira feels towards the English, Reuters has been told in an interview. The stadium is undergoing reconstruction work worth 662 million Brazilian reais ($422m) ahead of the 2014 finals and England would provide the perfect opponents for the World Cup hosts, Sergio Barroso, state secretary in Minas Gerais, told Reuters at the ground. The stadium, once the second-largest in Brazil with a record attendance of 132,000, is due to be completed in December next year as a state-of-theart 65,000 all-seater showpiece and could stage the opening match of the World Cup finals. England were involved in one of the greatest World Cup upsets when they were beaten 1-0 by the United States in the 1950 finals at the city’s Independencia Stadium, which is also being rebuilt. “We want England to play Brazil in a friendly in the opening match of the new stadium on Feb. 8 2013 on the recognised date for FIFA friendlies,” Barroso said. “We know what Ricardo Teixeira has said about the English, but the opening of the new stadium is more than just what he has said and his view of England. I am speaking to him and I am going to ask him to invite England to play here. “FIFA says it is all about fair play and the good of the game so lets see what Mr Teixeira will do about it. “England was the birthplace of football and Brazil developed the game and there are very strong links between our two footballing countries.” Teixeira, who also sits on FIFA’s executive committee, has been admonished by FIFA President Sepp Blatter for his public comments about England and its media, recently saying in an interview that the English “were pirates who could go to hell”.

Stern: Nothing to be encouraged about in NBA talks Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — A month into the lockout, the only change is in David Stern’s mood. After long maintaining he was optimistic during this collective bargaining process, the NBA Commissioner said Monday “nothing” in a nearly three-hour meeting gave him reason for encouragement. And for that, he pointed the finger in one direction. “I don’t feel optimistic about the players’ willingness to engage in a serious way,” a downcast Stern said. So the first meeting to include Stern and fellow leadership from owners and players since the lockout began exactly a month earlier produced nothing new — except blame. Stern said the sides were “at the same place as we were 30 days ago,” a June 30 session hours before the old deal expired, adding he doesn’t feel players are bargaining in good faith. Players contend that although owners insist they are committed to making a deal, their proposals say otherwise. Neither side offered a new one

the room, expressing their desire to get a deal done, but where their proposal lies makes it hard to believe that. “So we’re continuing to try to work around what’s been said and really focus on the deal on the table, and right now we’re still a very, very long way from getting a deal done.” Stern disputed Fisher’s take on the owners’ actions. “He’s entitled to draw his own conclusion,” Stern said. “We have absolutely the opposite take on it.” Fisher said the sides would try to meet at least two or three more times in August. Stern said there is always reason to have meetings, yet made it clear owners feel not enough is happening during them.

The 19-year-old Serb, ranked 53rd in the world, almost missed her Monday first-round match after she was somehow presented with an erroneous ticket to a tiny desert town nearly 1,500 kilometers short of her intended destination. The confused teenager, who
played last week’s tournament in Maryland, spent the night in the New Mexico town before taking an early flight to California, where she arrived a mere 30 minutes before the start of her delayed match. Jovanovski explained that she flew from Washington to Dallas, then to Albuquerque and the first Carlsbad, not far from the tourist destination of Carlsbad Caverns. Upon arrival she said she waited for 15 minutes in a nearly empty airport then got on the phone to tournament transport, which said it was
looking for her at the California arrivals hall. “They said they were at the airport and looking for me,” she explained. “I said I was the only person here.” The person on the California end of the conversation suddenly got the picture: “Are you in Carlsbad in California or in New Mexico?” Things didn’t improve much for Jovanovski once she finally got to the correct Carlsbad. She lost her firstround match against ninth-seeded italian Roberta Vinci 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Former Japan national defender Matsuda collapses Associated Press Writer
TOKYO — Club officials say former Japan defender Naoki Matsuda collapsed during training after suffering a cardiopulmonary arrest. The 34year-old Matsuda was unconscious when he arrived at a hospital Tuesday and has been on an artificial cardiopulmonary unit, Matsumoto Yamaga Football Club team officials say. His condition was “extremely severe,” club president Hiroshi Otsuki said, according
to doctors. Matsuda collapsed after finishing a 15-minute warmup run during training, coach Yoshiyuki Kato said. Matsuda played 40 times for Japan including at the 2002 World Cup held in Japan and South Korea. Record high temperatures across Japan have caused a rise in heatstroke cases. A total of 43 people have died from heatstroke in the two months through the end of July, Kyodo reported.

Renault’s Spa update must work NICK Heidfeld believes that Renault’s season will be in ‘trouble’ if a major update package planned for the Belgian Grand Prix does not deliver a good step forward in form. Renault failed to build on a strong start to the year that included podiums in Australian and Malaysia, with matters not helped by a lack of early year development progress in the wind tunnel and a mid-season shut down of the facility to upgrade it. However, the team has unlocked some good improvements at the factory and a lot of the new parts - including wings, bodywork and floor updates – will come on tap for the next race at SpaFrancorchamps. Heidfeld believes that, on the back of recent struggles, it is essential these updates do bring what is promised, as the outfit bids to try and retake Mercedes GP for fourth
in the constructors’ championship. “If it doesn’t work, then we are in trouble,” Heidfeld told AUTOSPORT about the major update package coming for Belgium. “Let’s hope for the best. “I feel it finally has to work because we have been saying for some races now that we understand the problem, and that we have moved forward. This will be the first time that we really have something big. “Since we found out our problems we have made some small things. But we have made some big improvements in the wind tunnel now, and it was not that easy to bring all the parts to the circuit yet. So Spa is a very important place for us to go in the right direction.” Renault may continue to experiment with a rearward facing exhaust system in Belgium, but it is undecided about its plan just yet because the big updates coming are built around the forward facing concept.

Buttton says McLaren is now a match for Red Bull JENSON Button believes Red Bull Racing should have every reason to be worried about its own pace now - with the Hungarian Grand Prix winner confident McLaren is now a match for the championship leaders in both qualifying and races. On the basis that McLaren has won three of the last five grands prix, Button sees no reason why the Woking-based outfit cannot continue its good run of form for the remainder of the season. And, with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber now being pushed really hard in qualifying - an area where they were dominant earlier this year - Button thinks that the advantage Red Bull Racing had has now been wiped away. “We are very quick in the race,” Button said. “In qualifying it is nice to see we have made some improvements, and nice to see we are up there with the Red Bulls now. They should be worried.” Button thinks that updates planned for the next race in Belgium should allow it to challenge for the win on the high-speed circuit too. “Spa is a very different race, and I am hoping that we will have a good package for it. I’m looking forward to running it, and hopefully we can fight for another victory. We should do well.” However, despite his optimism about McLaren’s run of
form, he concedes that recent non-finishes have badly hurt his championship ambitions. “We won three of the last five races, which is not bad, it is pretty good. But for me it is pretty tough to fight for the championship because of recent reliability issues, but still we are not going to give up. “As a team we have made it very difficult for ourselves over the last three races with failures, but I am a very positive person. “I know it is very difficult to fight for the championship. I am taking it one race at a time. I don’t look at the numbers. I will just keep my head down and concentrate on doing the best I can at each race.” Button currently lies fifth in the drivers’ championship, 100 points adrift of Vettel but only 15 points behind Webber, who is second overall.
