Donkey in farmgirl getup wins Colombian pageant MONIQUIRA - A donkey disguised as a flirty farmgirl took home a quirky Colombian contest’s top prize Sunday, without even making an ass of herself. No it wasn’t Miss Colombia: Livestock Version, but it could have been. With some obvious love for their farm animals, the people of the central town of Moniquira have been letting their donkeys shine this way for 14 years at the annual donkey festival. It wouldn’t be a party without donkey races, contests to see which is the most elegant, and the costume contest. With her garish print dress with snails embroidered on it, long blonde hair and bushy eyebrows, Amasijos, from the town of Arcabuco, captured the most hearts, and outdid 59 other contestants,

most of whom wished for world peace. Donkeys traditionally have been beloved everyday workmates in mountainous and largely rural Colombia. Although they have been increasingly replaced by trucks, they still have a special place in Colombians’ hearts. “The important thing is the participation of farmers, who are often not taken into account because of their way of life, here it is important,” Alvaro Lopez, the proud owner of Amasijos, told AFP. For the win, Lopez had to beat other donkey owners who dressed their animals with indigenous feathers and necklaces, or with shirts of the Colombian national team, which on Tuesday will face England in the second round of the World Cup. Universal’s latest earth-stomping dinosaur movie took in $60 million for the three-day weekend, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported. The superhero-family-next-door of “Incredibles 2,” a Pixar/Disney animation, earned $45.5 million. Together they helped estimated industry receipts to the end of June rise 15 percent against the same month last year. “Jurassic,” featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and “Incredibles,” with voice actors Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter, were expected to do well. The former is nearing the $1 billion mark globally, while “Incredibles” is set
to become the second-biggest animated film ever in North America, after “Finding Dory.” But Variety said that two new films, Sony’s “Sicario: Day of the Saldado” and Lionsgate’s “Uncle Drew,” had easily outperformed industry expectations to place third and fourth. The “Sicario” sequel, an action thriller starring Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, took in $19 million, outperforming the wellreviewed original film by $7 million. Its highly-topical premise has CIA agent Brolin teaming up with hitman Del Toro to fight drug cartels smuggling “terrorists” across the Mexican border.
On a lighter note, “Uncle Drew” draws on the talents of basketball stars present and past -- Kyrie Irving, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Lisa Leslie and Reggie Miller, with a court-full of others in cameo roles. Hard-luck streetball team manager Uncle Drew (Irving, in a role that originated in a Pepsi ad) rounds up his old crew ahead of a big tournament in Brooklyn. The film took in $15.5 million. “Ocean’s 8” from Warner Bros. slipped two spots to fifth place, taking in $8 million in its fourth week out. The female-centric heist film stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway. (afp)

Russia’s fans celebrate in central Moscow after Russia won the Russia 2018 World Cup round of 16 football match against Spain on July 1, 2018.
Russia’s World Cup upset of Spain ‘only the beginning’, says Cherchesov
Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov believes the World Cup hosts’ shock victory over title contenders Spain on penalites following a 1-1 draw in the last 16 on Sunday “is only the beginning”. Captain Igor Akinfeev saved two penalties as Russia triumphed 4-3 in a dramatic shootout in Moscow to reach a first quarter-final since the Soviet era, in 1970. “I’m not the man of the match, the man of the match is our team and our fans,” said Akinfeev, after each converted penalty, and his saves from Koke and Iago Aspas, were greeted with a deafening roar from a crowd of 78,011 at the Luzhniki Stadium. Russia were largely expected to just make up the numbers at their own tournament after entering with a seven-match winless run and ranked the lowest of the 32 teams. Cherchesov has masterminded a remarkable upturn in fortunes, with back-to-back wins over Saudi
Arabia and Egypt to launch their campaign sparking a wave of national euphoria. They rode that support, and occasionally their luck, to recover from falling behind to a 12th-minute own goal from Sergei Ignashevich. Artem Dzyuba equalised with a penalty shortly before half-time after Spain defender Gerard Pique was punished for a handball. Russia’s defence then held firm as Spain dominated possession before the heroics of Akinfeev triggered wild celebrations in the rain.
However, Cherchesov refused to get carried away and spoke like a man on a mission after his side booked a quarter-final clash with Croatia or Denmark. “I believe that it’s only the beginning so I have to save my emotions for the future,” said Cherchesov, who at times gestured towards the crowd to lift the noise levels. “Today we found the right place at the right time and we achieved the maximum we could.” “Now it’s over and I’m thinking only about the next game. These are very simple, not very sophisticated
emotions,” he added. “It wasn’t open football on our part. They are better than us in many ways so I don’t believe we should risk going forward, and I think we chose the correct tactic.”
- ‘Can’t point fingers’ Spain joined fellow heavyweights Germany and Argentina in making a premature exit, raising questions as to the wisdom of sacking Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the competition. Lopetegui was axed by the Spanish federation with the team already in Russia after agreeing a deal to become the Real Madrid coach next season. Spain came to the finals unbeaten in 20 matches since Lopetegui took over following Euro 2016,
with the 2010 world champions winning just once in four games with Hierro at the helm. “I accept the responsibility, I am the head coach. If anyone needs to shoulder this responsibility it’s me,” said the former Real Madrid captain. “I have nothing to hold against anybody. I put my reputation out there because that’s what my job required.” Continued to page 6
