LOS ANGELES — As audiences gear up to see Paul Rudd become Marvel’s smallest superhero in “Ant-Man,” the actor candidly reminisced about the legacy he was leaving on Wednesday as he received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Rudd, 46, best known for films such as “This is 40” and “Anchorman,” deployed his usual sense of humor as he unveiled the 2,554th star on the landmark mile-long strip of plaques on Hollywood Boulevard.

“I remember being a kid and walking this boulevard and reading the names and thinking about what so many other millions of people thought about, which is, you know, who’s that?” the actor said.

“The fact that millions of people are going to be able to now see me and ask that same question, for time immemorial, is humbling beyond belief.”

In “Ant-Man,” out in theaters on July 17, Rudd stars as a petty thief

named Scott Lang, who acquires a special suit that gives him the ability to shrink in size yet gain superhuman strength, allowing him to use his talents to save the world.

The film is based off a character written by Stan Lee, which first appeared in Marvel Comic books in the early 1960s.

Rudd’s co-star Michael Douglas, who plays scientist Hank Pym, said that he was amused at how much fun Rudd had donning the superhero costume for the film.

“He was like the kid in the candy shop, I’ve never seen anybody have so much fun in my life,” said Douglas.

Since the release of “Clueless” in 1995, Rudd has become a film

comedy mainstay, with appearances in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up” and “I Love You, Man.” He has also appeared on the television sitcoms “Friends” and “Parks and Recreation,” and was joined by “Parks” co-star Adam Scott at his star unveiling.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame has honored influential figures in entertainment since 1960.

Recipients of the star-shaped plaques, which are cemented into the sidewalk, are approved by Hollywood’s Chamber of Commerce.

Sponsors of the recipients purchase the star for $30,000, with funds going to the Hollywood Historic Trust. (ap/rtr)

Channing Tatum to go for ”dad bod” after ”Magic Mike XXL”

LONDON - Known for his toned torso and abs, often on display in the “Magic Mike” male stripper saga, Hollywood actor Channing Tatum says he will no longer be keeping up his intense workout regime and instead champion the latest trend - a “dad bod” .

Tatum, who returns as Mike in “Magic Mike XXL”, said he was hoping to make the less fit-looking male body look more popular.

The term came to prominence this year after a U.S. student wrote an article about the male physique in which she described it as “a nice balance between a beer gut and working out”. Her idea went viral and the “dad bod” took the Internet by storm.

Harjo revealed that the number of additional flights has decreased about six percent even during Idul Fitri and the holiday season due to the declining economic conditions.

Entering drought, rivers in Buleleng start to dry out

Since designated as a World Cultural Heritage in 2012 and green belt area, tourist visits to the area of Jatiluwih continues to increase especially after the establishment of the governing body. However, since it belongs to green belt area, it is not allowed to build tourism facilities like accommodations and restaurants.

TABANAN - Since designated as a World Cultural Heritage in 2012 and green belt area, tourist visits to the area of Jatiluwih continues to increase especially after the establishment of the governing body. However, since it belongs to green belt area, it is not allowed to build tourism facilities like accommodations and restaurants. Actually, the accommodation is very important to support tourism, especially to provide facilities for travelers so that it increases tourist visits. To that end, it is important to think about which zone at Jatiluwih can be built to meet the needs of the accommodation.

The Head of Tabanan Revenue Service and Traditional Irrigation, Nyoman Sudarma, said on Wednesday (Jul. 1) that so far there is no clear zoning determination where at Jatiluwih area is allowed and not allowed to build, primarily the development of tourism facilities such as lodging and restaurants. Other than the accommodation, Jatiluwih also needs a parking lot. “Is it necessary to provide parking space near the Jatiluwih area and then provided with shuttle service by small vehicles to deliver travelers to the cultural heritage site,” said Sudarma.

To favor the environmental preservation, especially the agricultural sector in the area of Jatiluwih

cultural heritage, according to Sudarma, there has been distribution of revenue to subsidize the implementation of tax relief in the region up to 50 percent. Tax relief is provided for 14 subak areas including in the green belt area. “In addition to green belt areas at Jatiluwih, the tax relief is also given to other green belts,” said Sudarma. In total, the green belt area in Tabanan reaches 2,000 hectares.

In the meantime, the revenue distribution of the Jatiluwih cultural heritage, in accordance with the agreement stipulated on December 27, 2013, the Tabanan County gets 45 percent and 55 percent is allocated to Jatiluwih village. The 55 percent is then distributed to Jatiluwih administrative village

(25 percent), Jatiluwih customary village (30 percent), Gunung Sari customary village (20 percent), Subak Jatiluwih (21 percent), and Subak Abian Jatiluwih and Subak Abian Gunung Sari respectively gets 2 percent. “This revenue distribution is one of the concerns of local government to subak including its farmers. With this revenue distribution they are expected to maintain the tradition as well as the preservation of the agricultural areas at Jatiluwih,” he said.

Related to preserving the cultural heritage area of Jatiluwih, his party also expects the participation of provincial and central government where the government of Tabanan is unable to help considering that it has limited budget. (kmb24)

SINGARAJA - Entering dry season this year, most of the rivers in Buleleng begin to dry out. By all means, this situation becomes an annual problem and threatens the agricultural activities in North Bali.

Moreover, the source of agricultural irrigation in North Bali largely relies on the flow of river water.

As the data collected in the field on Wednesday (Jul. 1), most of the rivers in Tejakula subdistrict have dried up since the beginning of this dry season. The river flow seems to dry up where the river bed and sand on the river bank have been clearly seen. Similar condition also happens to the rivers in the area of Gerokgak.

In this region, the river flow has totally dried out. Moreover, some streams have changed into a footpath leading to plantation of local residents.

In the other areas, the rivers still drain off water for irrigation. From the data in the Buleleng Public Works Agency, the streams remaining to be functioned for agricultural irrigation and plantation only amount to a dozen rivers.

On entering this dry season, the discharge of river water also starts to diminish. Automatically this situation slightly threatens so that the agriculture in North Bali will experience drought this year.

The Head of the Buleleng Public Works Agency, Nyoman Gede Suryawan, when asked for his confirmation on Wednesday (Jul. 1) did not dismiss if during dry season the rivers in Buleleng have dried up. Furthermore, Suryawan added that those rivers are actually categorized into rain-fed rivers. In other words, the rivers will only drain off water during rainy season. In the meantime, during dry season the water flow will automatically and totally dry. “Dry rivers are located in East and West Buleleng. These rivers

also drain off water in rainy season only and when dry season comes, the rivers automatically dry out,” he said.

According to Suryawan, when entering this dry season his party has made intensive monitoring. This monitoring is focused on the rivers remaining to be functioned to support the agriculture and plantation of residents. From the data collection, it is obtained that about 16 rivers in several subdistricts in Buleleng remain to drain off water.

Condition of the water discharge in these rivers recently began to decline due to the effect of dry season. With this condition, his party has made coordination with related agencies in this case the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency to make farmers aware of the decline in water flow for the irrigation of their agriculture and plantations. “Its discharge has gone down and we have coordinated this with the Agency in order to urge farmers to wary the decline in the water flow so that it will not cause drought and disturb their plants,” he added.

In the meantime, the information obtained from the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency mentions that on entering this dry season the majority of farmers have already planted such as beans and tobacco. Only a few farmers force themselves to grow rice despite the dry season. Generally, farmers remaining to plant rice get stable supply of irrigation water. This can be found at the villages like the Panji, Sukasada subdistrict, Baktiseraga, Pemaron, Tukadmungga, and other villages in North Bali. Farmers at these villages have even anticipated the shortage of water by utilizing water of their wells. To drain this water, farmers are forced to use pumps. (kmb38)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dior oozes ‘bourgeois cool’ at Paris men’s fashion week

PARIS - Dior declared summer 2016 the season of “bourgeois cool” at Paris men’s fashion week on Saturday, while Balmain decked out its models as old-fashioned adventurers.

Balmain’s young creative director Olivier Rousteing, dubbed “Mr Popular” by Vogue, presented an exploration-themed collection for the French luxury label’s first ever menswear catwalk show, dressing his models in caps, shorts and Greek sandals with a khaki palette.

Rousteing, 29, said after the show that “Balmain man” was someone exactly like him: “Someone who is discovering the world, travelling as an adventurer, trying to find new treasures.”

The show was one of the most hotly-awaited events of men’s fashion week, and British Olympic diver Tom Daley and reality TV star Kris Jenner -- whose daughter Kim Kardashian is one of Rousteing’s army of celebrity friends -- were among the crowds.

Men’s fashion now accounts for 40 percent of Balmain’s sales, but Rousteing justified the decision to sneak a few female models onto the catwalk to show off his new womenswear.

“The womenswear is really

close to my menswear,” he said.

“For lots of brands, the man and the woman are really different, (whereas for me) it’s the same DNA.” Dior Homme, meanwhile, went for a blend of traditional elegance and sportswear for its spring/summer 2016 collection, with artistic director Kris Van Assche paying homage to both the bomber jacket and the blazer.

“I tried to redefine a new bourgeois look -- one that knows all its parents’ rules, that understands

elegance, but mixes these with the rules of the street, with something cooler,” the Belgian designer told AFP. The bomber jacket, a streetwear staple, got a middle-class makeover in the collection by being embroidered with white roses -- Christian Dior’s favourite flowers -- while Van Assche drove the culture clash home by mixing camouflage fabric with the diamond-shaped Argyll patterning beloved of golf club members.

Bright orange made plenty of appearances on the catwalk, with Van Assche adding splashes of red, yellow and blue, inspired by the

work of American artist Kristin McKirdy.

“I’m not known for my use of colour, and in her work I’ve found a way to embed it, almost a way to infiltrate it,” he said. “We ended up doing a collaboration.”

The results of that collaboration could be seen dangling from the hands of Dior’s models and swinging from their necks, in the form of large pendants using the bright colour scheme.

Bali reports 2.13 percent increase in exports DENPASAR - Bali recorded 2.13 percent increase in exports to US$223.75 million in the first five months of this year from US$219.07 million in the same period last year.

“Small and cottage industries contributed 74 percent to the total export earning,” head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Panusunan Siregar said on Thursday. Siregar said exports in May alone shipped from a number of ports in Indonesia were valued at US$45.64 million down 5.73 percent from US$48.42 million in the previous month.

“The export earning in May this year, however, was still higher

than US$40.6 million in the same month last year,” he said.

Exports via the Benoa port of Denpasar accounted for only 40.79 percent valued at US$15.24 million in May. The largest part was exported via East Java port accounting for 58.15 percent valued at US$30.10 million nand via Jakarta port accounting for 1.03 percent valued at US$274,605 and via Central Java 0.03% valued at US$3,731.

Panasunan Siregar said the

main export destinations are Japan, accounting for 25.26 percent, the United States for 18.88 percent, Singapore 6.97 percent, Australia 5.56 percent and Hong Kong 5.52 percent.

The main export commodities are fish and shrimp accounting for 35.38 percent, jewelry for 10.55 percent, non knitted ready made wear 9.42 percent, timber and timber products 9.08 percent and furniture 7.86 percent. (ant)

Donna Karan stepping down as chief designer for her company

NEW YORK — Donna Karan will step down from daily duties as chief designer at her namesake company, Donna Karan International, to devote more time to her philanthropic foundation.

She’ll remain a close adviser, according to a company statement released Tuesday.

Karan, 66, co-founded the company in 1984. It went public in 1996. And in 2001, LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton invested and helped grow it globally. It now sells apparel, sportswear, accessories and shoes under the Donna Karan New York and DKNY brands.

The company said it will not immediately seek to replace Karan as designer, suspending runway shows and collections for a “period of time.”

Karan, known for helping women streamline their look through basic

pieces, expressed gratitude and “my deepest feelings” to colleagues.

“Donna Karan New York is a part of me, past, present and future,” she said in the statement. “It has been an honor to speak woman to woman about seven easy pieces that forever changed the way women dress.”

Reaction was swift as insiders lauded Karan as a visionary, with the Council of Fashion Designers of America tweeting: “The end of an era! Donna Karan departs DKI.” Karan said she made the decision after much “soul-searching,” adding: “I have arrived at a point in my life where I need to spend more time to pursue my Urban Zen commitment to its fullest potential.”

She was referring to Urban Zen Company and Foundation, a philanthropy that works around the world on health care

and education. Urban Zen sells luxury goods in partnership with artisans, with proceeds benefiting projects.

Pierre-Yves Roussel, chairman and CEO of LVMH Fashion Group, called it a privilege to collaborate with Karan and said LVMH was committed to “staying true to the spirit and value Donna has championed” for more than three decades.

Early on, Karan’s seven easy pieces provided a modern system for women with the goal of simplifying their wardrobes without sacrificing elegance or sensuality. With a younger, urban customer in mind, she added DKNY five years after starting the company.

Illegal fishermen operates at Manta Point

SEMARAPURA - The Nusa Penida water conservation area (KKP) is frequented by illegal fishing vessels operating to catch fish in the area. The illegal fishermen can catch lobster and fish amounting to tens of kilograms each day.

Such illegal fishing is only known after there is a report from the surrounding community.

A resident of Nusa Penida, I Ketut Selasa, 35, revealed previously that he often heard the sound of explosions at night from his home happened to be close to the beach. This man from Saren II hamlet, Batumadeg village, knows the action of the illegal fishermen catching fish around the water conservation area when escorting guests to Guyangan spring. The fishing vessel is very suspicious. “Without further a do, I inform this incident to the officer,” he said.

Blacklist warnings spread on websites in North Korea

TOKYO — North Korea, already one of the least-wired places in the world, appears to be cracking down on the use of the Internet by even the small number of foreigners who can access it with relative freedom by blacklisting and blocking social media accounts or websites deemed to carry harmful content.

The move won’t be noticed by most in the North since hardly anyone has access to the Internet.

But it could signal increasing concern in Pyongyang over the flow of real-time photos, tweets and status updates getting out to the world and an attempt to further limit what the few North Koreans able to view the Internet can see.

Warnings, in Korean and English, are now appearing on a wide array of sites, including social media such as Instagram, Tumblr and Flickr and websites like the South Korean news agency Yonhap, along with specific articles about the country. The warnings say the sites have been blacklisted for harmful content and cannot be accessed.

There has been no announcement of a policy change by the North Korean government or the North’s mobile service carrier, Koryolink, a joint venture with Egypt’s Orascom Telecom and Media Technology.

With no official confirmation, it was impossible to rule out the possibility the warnings resulted from a hack of some sort.

The explicit blacklisting of sites would be a break with past practice in North Korea, when officials most likely monitored the Internet activity of foreign users but did so

quietly. The 3G data connection on mobile phones itself has not been disrupted and many sites, including Facebook and Twitter, continued to function normally. But signs of concern that local eyes may be trying to peek into the crack opened for foreigners to use the Internet have been growing.

From late last year, Koryolink began blocking the function that allows smart phones to be turned into wifi hotspots that can share their Internet connection with other nearby devices. Officials last year also tightened restrictions on wifi use at embassies, probably to keep local residents from illegally “piggybacking” off of wifi signals near their compounds.

If not the result of a hack, the scattershot nature of the blacklist warnings and the relative ease with which they can be circumvented would suggest a more tentative and possibly experimental effort at controlling Internet use than the sophisticated Great Firewall that makes it impossible for most Chinese to access Facebook or even the widespread government censorship of Internet sites in South Korea.

“This effort seems a bit random,” said James Lewis, an expert in computer security who is a director and senior fellow at the Washington D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“Why send a warning about some sites, block some, but not block others? Either the DPRK is developing a more comprehensive policy but changed their mind, or they’ve been hacked.” (ap)

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A pilot described by colleagues as nervous and hasty mistakenly throttled down a still-running engine following a glitch with the other engine in an airline crash that killed 43 people in Taiwan in February, flight safety officials said Thursday.

A preliminary investigation after the Feb. 4 crash of TransAsia flight GE235 already had indicated that the pilot shut off the remaining engine after one of them went idle. But the account Thursday by Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council — while not assigning blame — added additional details about the crash and the background of the pilot, including that he had failed a flight simulator test as recently as May 2014. Both the pilot and co-pilot died.

Minutes after takeoff in Taipei, a ribbon-like sensor connector in the automated flight system failed and put one engine into a mode that effectively cut its power to the aircraft, Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council Executive Director Thomas Wang told a news conference.

The engine’s condition, useful in other cases to reduce torque, generated a flame-out warning in the cockpit 37 seconds after takeoff, according to a report by the council.

However, it says the engine itself was technically still capable of providing power to the ATR-72 aircraft. The aircraft was also designed to fly on one engine.

“The sensor connector, in lay-

man’s terms, you would say was in a situation where it didn’t connect normally,” Wang said. Seconds later, the pilot said he would pull back on the throttle to the plane’s other engine, which showed no mechanical trouble, the council’s report indicates. Normally, a pilot would throttle back to cut the flamed-out engine to avoid further problems and rely on the still-running engine for power.

“If engine two has flamed out, you would shut off engine two, that’s normal logic,” Wang said.

Eight seconds before the crash, the council’s report states, the pilot said in Chinese: “Wow, pulled back on the wrong side throttle.”

The pilot in command had failed a flight simulator test in May 2014 and passed it the following month with further training, the council’s report says. He had been described in post-crash interviews with colleagues as “a little nervous during line operations,” and a person who “had a tendency of rushing to perform the procedures without coordination with the (co-pilot),” according to the report.

An automatic system to control power upon takeoff had not been

armed while the plane was on the ground in Taipei but kicked in seconds later, the agency’s report said.

The pilot knew about this outage but authorized takeoff, the report shows. It was not clear if that glitch had any connection with the engine going idle. The automatic takeoff power control system maker in the United States has joined Taiwan’s investigation, Wang said.

The flight had left Taipei’s Songshan airport for the outlying Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen. Video captured on dashboard cameras showed the plane flying on its side over an elevated road, clipping a fence, light pole and passing taxi shortly before plunging into the Keelung River in a heavily populated part of Taipei. The flight was carrying 53 passengers, three crew members and two flight attendants. Fifteen people escaped the aircraft alive.

The 64-year-old airline had no immediate comment on the Aviation Safety Council’s findings, but a company publicist said officials may make a statement later Thursday. Another domestic TransAsia flight crashed on July 23 last year, killing 48 people aboard. (ap)

ATHENS — Greece braced for more chaos on the streets outside its mostly shuttered banks Thursday, as Athens and its creditors halted talks on resolving the country’s deepening financial crisis until a referendum this weekend.

Banks have been closed all week to prevent a crash from mass money withdrawals, while a few have been reopened to help pensioners without ATM cards.

But they are still in business.

The European Central Bank left the terms of its emergency $100 billion cash support to Greece unchanged, a day after Athens slipped into arrears with the International Monetary Fund and its bailout program expired.

The move kept chances alive for a settlement between Greece and

creditors. And Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis publicly thanked the ECB and its president, Mario Draghi, for the decision.

“This allows us to breathe. It’s a very positive move and a move of good will on the part of the European Central Bank. I welcome it,” Varoufakis told state television.

Draghi, he said, had faced down “hawks” among eurozone members who had demanded that Athens increase collateral needed to receive continued assistance.

Asian stock markets advanced

Thursday after gains on Wall Street as strong U.S. payroll data overshadowed worries about the Greek crisis.

Greece is seeking a third bailout from the eurozone rescue fund after the previous deal expired this week without agreement on the terms of final pay outs.

The impasse left billions bailout money frozen or canceled and saw Greece forced to close banks and its stock market for at least a week, while the country’s left-wing government called a referendum urging voters to denounce the previous deal offered by creditors.

Eurozone finance ministers decided to put the talks with Greece on hold till the vote takes place.

“Given the political situation,

the rejection of the previous proposals, the referendum which will take place on Sunday, and the recommendation by the Greek government to vote ‘No,’ we see no grounds for further talks at this point,” Dutch Foreign Minister and eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem said after a late-night teleconference.

“There will be no talks in the coming days.”

In Athens, crowds of anxious elderly Greeks thronged banks Wednesday beginning before dawn, struggling to withdraw their maximum of 120 euros ($134) for the week after the government reopened some banks to help pensioners who don’t have bank cards.

“It’s very bad,” said retired pharmacy worker Popi Stavrakaki, 68. “I’m afraid it will be worse soon. I have no idea why this is happening.”

Greece is in a financial limbo now that its bailout program has expired, cutting it off from vital financing and pushing it one step closer to leaving the euro. It also has become the first developed country to fail to repay a debt to the International Monetary Fund on time. The last country to miss an IMF payment was Zimbabwe in 2001.

As long as it is in arrears on the IMF payment, Greece cannot get any more money from the organization. (ap)

DETROIT — Americans again bought vehicles that sit up high and come loaded with features like backup cameras and smartphone capabilities in June. Horsepower was also in; gas-sipping not so much.

SUVs of all sizes continued to fly off dealer lots. Sales of the larger Ford Explorer rose 30 percent; Nissan’s Rogue small SUV posted a 54 percent jump; and sales of the Jeep Cherokee gained 39 percent.

Total sales rose 3.9 percent over last June to 1.48 million, according to Autodata Corp. For the first half of the year, sales gained 4.4 percent to 8.5 million.

Buoyed by the momentum, the National Automobile Dealers Association this week raised its fullyear sales forecast to 17.2 million vehicles from just under 17 million.

The last time auto sales topped 17 million was in 2001.

Most automakers reported gains for June, led by Nissan with an increase of 13 percent. General Motors’ sales fell, largely because the company cut back on sales to rental-car companies.

Consumers are finding a number of reasons to buy, including an improved job market, low interest rates, a robust stock market and low gas prices. Automakers are also helping themselves by introducing new vehicles faster and loading them up with desirable features.

The average new vehicle cost an estimated $31,948 in June, accord-

ing to the car-buying site TrueCar. com.

High-volume sales of SUVs priced in the low- to mid-$30,000 range are boosting transaction prices, said Larry Dominique, executive vice president, industry solutions, for TrueCar. Another factor: Luxury sales, averaging around $50,000, which Dominique said are “on fire.”

Ford’s Lincoln division notched a 14.5 percent gain, while sales for Nissan’s Infiniti and Toyota’s Lexus luxury units also rose by double digits.

Demand for SUVs is taking a bite out of car sales. Sales of the midsize Ford Fusion dropped 8 percent last month, while sales of Chevy’s compact Cruze slipped 13 percent. Dealers offered promotions in June to clear some smaller cars off their lots. Kia, for example, was offering zero-percent financing for up to 66 months and up to $1,500 on Optima and Forte sedans.

The decline in car sales is partly due to lower gas prices. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. Wednesday was $2.76, compared with $3.67 on July 1, 2014.

Muscle hasn’t lost its appeal.

Sales of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger all rose. Ford sold 11,719 Mustangs, a 54 percent gain and the performance car’s best June since 2007. (ap)

According to the spouse to the priest of Dalem Temple, Jro Mangku Made Suartini, the tradition known as masegeh aims at making invocation ritual to God. In relation to this ritual, residents present calves. After being given a sacred mantra and holy water, they are ready to be presented should there be any vow at the Dalem Dasar Temple of Tambakan village. Residents of Tambakan have confidence that presentation of calves will give smoothness to their fortune. “We believe in this tradition. Should there be people making a vow in order to earn their living flourishingly, they promise to sacrifice a calf after it has worked.

A total of 28 calves are presented based on the agreement of customary village apparatus to express gratitude of residents for having been endowed with fortune and offspring. The beef obtained from slaughtering calves are equally distributed to all local residents.

This year the committee prepared 28 calves, while last year they sacrificed 22 heads. It is said that residents believe that they do not slaughter haphazard calves, and the man entitled to spear first is the village apparatus. GIANYAR - As a seasonal business before the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan, some traders of penjor decoration and its accessories begin to appear around Gianyar. Although categorized into seasonal business, when Galungan arrives the price and order of penjor can increase up to three times compared to normal days.

Wayan Raini, a trader of penjor decoration and its accessories around Bona, Blahbatuh, admitted that she has provided the stock since mid-June 2015. This was done to anticipate the surge in the demand ahead of Galungan and Kuningan in July 2015. “Our stock is intentionally made to meet the orders from a number of resellers,” she said.

According to her, similar conditions always occur once every six months. Peak demand of the penjor accessories frequently occurs between day seven and day one ahead of Penampahan Galungan.

“Although it is just entering the beginning of July, consumers have started to make a purchase. Probably, they may take into account the price hike that may occur a week before the celebration,” she said.

Nyoman Arya, another trader of penjor accessories around Bedulu, Gianyar. Arya claimed to have started selling since four days ago. Although the demand is still minimal, it does not matter to him because the penjor accessories made from palm leaf is durable until the feast. “The demand is not so much, but when getting closer to Galungan the transaction will be higher,” he said.

He estimated that the price of penjor accessories when approaching the Galungan will increase in the range of 5 percent to 10 percent. Price change occurs because at that time the hunting for penjor accessories will certainly increase sharply. As a result, many traders take advantage of the moment to raise the selling price.

Currently, the price still ranges

from IDR 45,000 to IDR 90,000 for penjor decoration; IDR 75,000 for kolong-kolong; IDR 20,000 to IDR 70,000 for sampian; IDR 20,000 for each meter of a pack of paddy thread consisting of five sets; and IDR 10,000 for kober.

In the meantime, lantern decoration is sold for IDR 20,000 for small size and IDR 125,000 for a large size. However, the large lantern with decoration can reach IDR 700,000. The price is subject to change a few days before the Galungan festivity.

“When wishing to buy penjor accessories, it must be done from now on because in addition to being cheaper many stocks are still available. Moreover, they are made from palm leaves so that they are not easily damaged and last longer,” he said. (nik)

KUALA LUMPUR — A Malaysian minister says Southeast Asian countries will establish a humanitarian fund to help boatloads of Rohingya Muslim and Bangladeshi immigrants who have recently landed in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Zahid Hamidi also says Singapore has pledged $200,000 to the fund at a special regional meeting Thursday on the refugee crisis.

Since early May, more than 4,600 boat people from Myanmar and Bangladesh have come ashore in Southeast Asian waters. The United Nations estimates some 2,000 migrants could still be at sea after human smugglers abandoned their boats amid a regional crackdown. 12 people detained in hotel attack probe

TUNIS — About 12 people have been detained in the investigation into a massacre at a beach resort that killed 38 people, mostly British tourists, a Tunisian official said. Tunisia’s Radio Mosaique reported Thursday that Lazhar Akremi, a senior official with the ruling Nida Tounes party, made the announcement at a party meeting. The report did not elaborate on when or where the arrests occurred.

The Tunisian government is holding a news conference Thursday morning in the capital Tunis about the investigation.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack, in which Tunisian student Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on a beach in the resort of Sousse.

The attacker was later killed by police.

Investigators are searching nationwide for accomplices. A person close

to the investigation told The Associated Press on Monday that seven people had been detained in the probe. At least 27 Britons and other European tourists are confirmed among the dead.

MANILA - A ferry carrying 173 passengers capsized Thursday as it left a central Philippine port in choppy waters, leaving at least 36 people dead and 19 others missing, coast guard officials said.

the M/B Kim Nirvana were rescued by nearby fishing boats and coast guard personnel or swam to safety off Ormoc city on Leyte Island.

Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said the ferry was leaving Ormoc for the Camotes Islands, about 44 kilo-

meters (27 miles) to the south, when it was lashed by strong waves.

Authorities investigating the Feb. 10 death of Antonio Zambrano-Montes in Pasco on Wednesday released audio files of interviews with witnesses, as well as video.

A prosecutor is deciding whether the three officers who shot Zambrano-Montes should face criminal charges, a process likely to take months.

Two witnesses said Zambrano-Montes told officers to shoot him. Witness Miguel Estrada said he saw Zambrano-Montes throw rocks at officers, then run away. In the files released by authorities, Estrada said Zambrano-Montes screamed: “’If you are gonna shoot me, shoot me.’”

Another witness, Chris Pirtle, also told authorities that Zambrano-Montes dared officers to shoot. “He kept on throwing the rocks, and the cop was telling him, ‘Hey, put down the rock,’” Pirtle said. Zambrano-Montes didn’t comply, witnesses said.

“He just kept telling him, ‘Shoot me, kill me,’” Pirtle said. In one audio file, witness Benjamin Patrick told investigators he yelled at officers after the man was shot. “Why did you just shoot him?” Patrick said he shouted.

“He was trying to get away. What are you guys doing?”

Patrick later said during questioning he wanted to apologize to the officers for his outburst. He did not explain why. Authorities say the 35-year-old Zambrano-Montes had been throwing rocks at passing motorists and police, and a stun gun failed to subdue him before he was shot. Cellphone video showed three officers chasing the man before shooting him as he turned around. (ap)

Plane’s engine likely failed before deadly crash: air force

MEDAN - The Indonesian military plane that crashed into a residential neighbourhood and killed 142 people likely suffered an engine failure, the air force said Thursday, but denied the aircraft was overloaded after claims civilians had paid to get on board.

The Hercules C-130 transporter went down Tuesday in the city of Medan shortly after taking off from a nearby airbase, exploding in a fireball and causing widespread destruction.

Air Vice Marshal Agus Dwi Putranto, an air force operations commander, told reporters initial findings indicated the 51-year-old plane had failed to gain enough speed after one of its four engines malfunctioned.

“There’s a likelihood that a propeller had stalled,” he said. “Going at a slow speed, the plane swerved to the right and hit an antenna tower.”

He said the pilot had asked to turn back to base shortly after takeoff, adding: “It means there was a problem.”

Witnesses have said the plane was tilting and giving off black smoke just before it crashed into a massage

parlour and hotel in a newly-built residential area.

However Putranto denied the plane was overloaded after the air force repeatedly revised up the number of people on the flight, sparking accusations paying civilians were on board, in violation of military rules.

“It’s unlikely an overcapacity problem,” the commander said. He said that the Hercules can carry 12.5 tonnes but the passengers on the flight would have only weighed about eight tonnes.

There were 122 people aboard the plane, mostly servicemen and women and their families, with the rest of the fatalities thought to have occurred on the ground.

Relatives of some civilians from non-military families have said they paid between 700,000 rupiah ($50)

and one million rupiah to travel on the aircraft. The military has denied taking payments and vowed to investigate.

The search for bodies officially ended late Wednesday, and the air force began transporting coffins of those killed across the vast archipelago for burial.

There were scenes of horror following the crash, with buildings severely damaged, cars reduced to flaming wrecks and the plane almost completely destroyed, with the tail the only part still recognisable.

It was the sixth fatal crash of an Indonesian air force plane in the past decade, according to the Aviation Safety Network, and prompted President Joko Widodo to order an overhaul of the country’s ageing military equipment. (afp)

PALU - The Indonesian government will continue its hunt for terrorists allegedly in Poso district, Central Sulawesi, with the launch of the third Camar Maleo Operation in the near future.

The second Camar Maleo Operation ended on June 7, Head of the Central Sulawesi Police Brigadier General Idham Azis told on Tuesday.

The next operation will be launched by the Anti-Terror Special Detachment 88 Unit of the police force, while Central Sulawesi will provide facilities.

However, hundreds of police personnel, mostly from the Mobile Brigade of the Central Sulawesi Police, will be involved in the task.

The police will continue to look

for members of the Santoso-led East Indonesian Mujahidin (MIT) who are still at large.

Till mid-2015, they arrested more than ten alleged terrorists and their sympathizers in the province, while two of them were shot dead.

Most of the arrested terrorists were taken to Jakarta for interrogation.

In addition, Brigadier General Idham Azis urged local inhabitants of Central Sulawesi to report to relevant authorities any information they may have regarding the whereabouts of the MIT members.

He also called on MIT members to surrender to the authorities with the guarantee that the police will not torture them.

At hot-for-Wimbledon, Venus Williams nears Serena showdown

LONDON — Venus Williams is no longer the player she once was, on account of the passage of time and the day-to-day ups and downs of an energy-sapping condition. At age 35, 21 years removed from her first professional tournament, Williams still possesses a dangerous serve, along with the muscle memory that comes with seven Grand Slam singles titles, five at Wimbledon.

And so while it is her younger sister Serena who is ranked No. 1, has 20 major titles and owns a 23-match Grand Slam winning streak as of Wednesday, the elder Williams is still in the draw at the All England Club, too — and the siblings are closing in on what would be their 26th all-in-the-family matchup on tour.

“She probably comes back here and, you know, I think, she almost feels like this is home,” said David Witt, Venus’ coach.

“When you have confidence, you have everything. That’s with any sport. And I guess when she gets here, it’s a confidence thing.”

On the hottest day on record in Wimbledon history, with the temperature topping 95 degrees (35 degrees Celsius) — and a terrific day for American women — both Williams sisters won second-round matches: 16th-seeded Venus beat 95th-ranked Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-6 (5), 6-4, while top-seeded Serena defeated 93rdranked Timea Babos of Hungary 6-4, 6-1.

Two more wins, and the siblings will meet in the fourth round. “She poses a big threat for me,” Serena said about Venus.

Formula 1’s current power unit penalty rules are confusing for fans and require a rethink, according to McLaren’s chief operating officer Jonathan Neale. Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were given 25 and 20-place grid penalties respectively for changing various parts of their Honda engines in Austria, while both Red Bull drivers also incurred hefty penalties.

Because there are only 20 cars on the grid, Button and Alonso could not take the full penalty and would have thus been hit with time penalties during the race, if they had not retired before being able to serve

them. “It’s a bit strange trying to explain the penalties,” Neale told AUTOSPORT. “If Formula 1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport, there are a number of things which are truisms which we have to deliver. “We have to deliver some constancy of purpose and I find it hard to reconcile that with drivers taking a 25-place penalty on a grid which only has 20 cars.

“We have to be able to explain to the fans what the reason is for this. “And I don’t think we have done a very good job explaining it or thinking through how it will be perceived.

“If I had one observation of the way the regulations have been developed, I would say they have been opportunistic rather than strategic.”

With more engine-related grid penalties inevitable for McLaren in the second-half of the season, Neale hinted that the team could take them tactically at some stage. “We will consider it,” he said. “But to do that we need a degree of predictability.

“There will be some areas where we say we have to sacrifice something here in order to protect something else. “But I think we’re a bit off that at the moment.” (net)

Brazil to ask former coaches to help improve local football SAO PAULO — The Brazilian football confederation will summon former national team coaches to help find ways of improving football in the country after a series of disappointing results.

The confederation’s announcement that it will form a counsel of former coaches comes less than a week after Brazil was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Copa America for the second consecutive time. It’s also less than a year since Brazil’s worst loss ever, a 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semifinals of the World Cup on home soil.

Former goalkeeper Gilmar Rinaldi, the confederation official who oversees the national team, said Wednesday in an interview with SporTV that foreign coaches, club coaches, former world champions and media representatives will also be called up to join the discussion.

“We will institute the counsel of strategic development for Brazilian football,” Rinaldi said. “We want an X-ray of what can be done. We want to open the confederation to knowledge from outside. It will be the future of the national team and of our football.” The decision to seek help was made after a meeting in Rio de Janeiro involv-

ing national team coach Dunga and confederation president Marco Polo del Nero.

“The goal is to have a diagnosis of Brazilian football through different perspectives so we can create and implement a strategic plan of action,” Rinaldi said, adding that the confederation will also summon different health and technology professionals.

ZURICH — The United States has submitted a formal request for Switzerland to extradite seven FIFA officials arrested as part of a corruption probe in Zurich in May, Swiss officials said Thursday. Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice said the requests were received July 1, within the 40-day deadline required.

They are based on a U.S. federal probe into alleged bribery and racketeering worth more than $150 million involving high-ranking officials at soccer’s world governing body.

All seven men, who face around 20 years in prison, have already objected to extradition.

They will be heard by Zurich police and granted a 14-day period to respond to federal officials about the extradition request, after which the Federal Office of Justice will rule on whether to extradite them. That ruling can be appealed to Switzerland’s top criminal court and supreme court.

The seven men, arrested May 27 in early-morning raids at a luxury Zurich hotel, include FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb of the Cayman Islands and former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay. Costa Rican soccer federation president Eduardo Li was arrested two days before he was due to formally join

FIFA’s executive committee.

Former Brazilian federation chief Jose Maria Marin led the 2014 World Cup local organizing committee and is a member of the FIFA panel organizing the Rio de Janeiro Olympics tournaments.

The others are Venezuela FA chief Rafael Esquivel; FIFA staffer Julio Rocha, a development officer from Nicaragua; and Costas Takkas, a Briton who works for CONCACAF President Webb. Holtby leaves Tottenham on permanent move to Hamburg

The teams traded penalty kick goals seven minutes apart in the first half. Aya Miyama opened the scoring in the 33rd minute by driving the ball into the open left corner while Bardsley guessed the wrong way.

“There was nothing more our team could’ve done today to put that ball in the back of the net,” Sampson said. “So credit Japan for hanging on in there, finding a way to get themselves through to a final.

Brazil to ask former coaches to help improve local football SAO PAULO — The Brazilian football confederation will summon former national team coaches to help find ways of improving football in the country after a series of disappointing results.

The confederation’s announcement that it will form a counsel of former coaches comes less than a week after Brazil was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Copa America for the second consecutive time. It’s also less than a year since Brazil’s worst loss ever, a 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semifinals of the World Cup on home soil.

Former goalkeeper Gilmar Rinaldi, the confederation official who oversees the national team, said Wednesday in an interview with SporTV that foreign coaches, club coaches, former world champions and media representatives will also be called up to join the discussion.

“We will institute the counsel of strategic development for Brazilian football,” Rinaldi said. “We want an X-ray of what can be done. We want to open the confederation to knowledge from outside. It will be the future of the national team and of our football.” The decision to seek help was made after a meeting in Rio de Janeiro involv-

ing national team coach Dunga and confederation president Marco Polo del Nero.

“The goal is to have a diagnosis of Brazilian football through different perspectives so we can create and implement a strategic plan of action,” Rinaldi said, adding that the confederation will also summon different health and technology professionals.

Former Brazil coaches expected to be called up include Luiz Felipe Scolari, Mano Menezes, Carlos Alberto Parreira, Mario Zagallo, Vanderlei Luxemburgo and Paulo Roberto Falcao, among others. The first meeting could happen as early as next week. (ap)

US files formal extradition request for 7 FIFA officials

EDMONTON, Alberta — England defender Laura Bassett was inconsolable as she lay face down on the field, sobbing. Japanese players gathered at the other end of the field in celebration — and relief — in realizing how close they came to squandering a chance to defend their Women’s World Cup title.

After Japan was outplayed for much of the second half, a turn of Bassett’s foot followed by a fortunate bounce off the crossbar led to an own goal in the final minute of stoppage time that allowed Japan pull out a 2-1 victory in the semifinal Wednesday. Japan will travel to Vancouver to face the United States on Sunday in a rematch of the 2011 championship game in Germany.

“Oh, what a tough one, what a tough one to take,” a red-eyed England coach Mark Sampson said. “I can’t speak about the game. I can only speak about how incredibly proud I am of my group.” Japan coach Norio Sasaki acknowledged there were several tense moments when England could have scored in the second half.

Mourinho says he supports Cech move to Arsenal LONDON - Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Cech’s transfer from Premier League champions Chelsea to local rivals Arsenal has been backed by the west London club’s manager Jose Mourinho.

Cech was Chelsea’s first-choice for 10 years but lost his place to Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois last season and joined Arsenal on Monday.

Mourinho said he would have preferred Cech, 33, to remain with Chelsea this season but with the player no longer number one choice and wanting a move, supports the decision. He also thanked Cech for his part in the club’s success.

“He (Mourinho) had to make his decision at the start of last season, I had to make my decision at the start of this season but I will always keep the best regards for him because I believe that we had so much success and so much respect for each other,” said Cech. “He is one of the best managers in the world. Now, we will be opponents but it will not change our relationship, I believe.

ZURICH — The United States has submitted a formal request for Switzerland to extradite seven FIFA officials arrested as part of a corruption probe in Zurich in May, Swiss officials said Thursday. Switzerland’s Federal Office of Justice said the requests were received July 1, within the 40-day deadline required.

They are based on a U.S. federal probe into alleged bribery and racketeering worth more than $150 million involving high-ranking officials at soccer’s world governing body.

All seven men, who face around 20 years in prison, have already objected to extradition.

They will be heard by Zurich police and granted a 14-day period to respond to federal officials about the extradition request, after which the Federal Office of Justice will rule on whether to extradite them. That ruling can be appealed to Switzerland’s top criminal court and supreme court.

The seven men, arrested May 27 in early-morning raids at a luxury Zurich hotel, include FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb of the Cayman Islands and former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay. Costa Rican soccer federation president Eduardo Li was arrested two days before he was due to formally join

FIFA’s executive committee.

Former Brazilian federation chief Jose Maria Marin led the 2014 World Cup local organizing committee and is a member of the FIFA panel organizing the Rio de Janeiro Olympics tournaments.

The others are Venezuela FA chief Rafael Esquivel; FIFA staffer Julio Rocha, a development officer from Nicaragua; and Costas Takkas, a Briton who works for CONCACAF President Webb. The seven are among 14 indicted by the U.S. Justice Department. Four more men have entered guilty pleas in the wide-ranging corruption case. (ap)

HOUSTON — Mexico’s Gold Cup chances could take a hit after Tuesday’s tune-up game with Honduras. Star forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez left the scoreless draw with a collarbone injury.

“We still don’t have a report,” Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera said through a translator. “Yes, there’s an impact, but we’re just thinking about what’s ahead. This is an unfortunate situation we cannot fix. With Chicharito he was going through a great moment in his career and the injury came; but we’re just moving on.”

Chicharito left in the 41st minute after a collision with Brayan Beckeles and was taken to a hospital to evaluate the injury. Hernandez has 40 goals for the Mexican national team in 75 appearances. At hot-for-Wimbledon, Venus Williams nears Serena showdown

LONDON — Venus Williams is no longer the player she once was, on account of the passage of time and the day-to-day ups and downs of an energy-sapping condition. At age 35, 21 years removed from her first professional tournament, Williams still possesses a dangerous serve, along with the muscle memory that comes with seven Grand Slam singles titles, five at Wimbledon.

And so while it is her younger sister Serena who is ranked No. 1, has 20 major titles and owns a 23-match Grand Slam winning streak as of Wednesday, the elder Williams is still in the draw at the All England Club, too — and the siblings are closing in on what would be their 26th all-in-the-family matchup on tour.

“She probably comes back here and, you know, I think, she almost feels like this is home,” said David Witt, Venus’ coach.

“When you have confidence, you have everything. That’s with any sport. And I guess when she gets here, it’s a confidence thing.”

On the hottest day on record in Wimbledon history, with the temperature topping 95 degrees (35 degrees Celsius) — and a terrific day for American women — both Williams sisters won second-round matches: 16th-seeded Venus beat 95th-ranked Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-6 (5), 6-4, while top-seeded Serena defeated 93rdranked Timea Babos of Hungary 6-4, 6-1.

Two more wins, and the siblings will meet in the fourth round. “She poses a big threat for me,” Serena said about Venus.

They pulled out of doubles on Tuesday, citing “soreness” for Serena, who wants to focus on her pursuit of a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title. Four other women from the U.S. won Wednesday, including two real surprises: 158th-ranked qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands eliminated No. 7 Ana Ivanovic, the 2009 French Open champion, 6-3, 6-4; and 47th-ranked CoCo Vandeweghe, the niece of former NBA player and executive Kiki, beat No. 11 Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Also advancing: No. 21 Madison Keys, who finished off a match suspended be-

cause of darkness at 2-all in the third set a night earlier, and Sloane Stephens. A pair of U.S. men moved on, too: No. 17 John Isner and 105th-ranked wild-card entry Denis Kudla, who followed up his victory over No. 28 Pablo Cuevas by getting past 18-year-old Alexander Zverev.

“A few years ago, I was being asked, ‘What happened to U.S.A. tennis?’ And I said, ‘Well, it comes and goes.’ I think there were a lot of younger players coming that showed promise,” the 30-year-old MattekSands said. “Sure enough, I think we have a really strong contingent of American players and it’s really good to see.”

She is halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam in doubles with Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. Serena, meanwhile, is halfway there in singles, and so far this week has a pair of straight-set victories after playing five three-setters at the French Open.

After dismissing Babos on Centre Court — where a small electrical fire in a mechanical room set off alarms once play was done for the day — Serena was able to settle in front of a TV to watch Venus finish off Putintseva. “I always root for Venus,” Serena said. “She’s been through a lot in her career. She’s really playing well.”

So far at Wimbledon, that is certainly true, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first round. Against Putintseva, Venus’ 29 winners included seven aces, and she reached 122 mph (197 kph) on a serve in the final game.

Venus last won the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in 2008; three years later, she announced that she has Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease that can cause joint pain and fatigue. (ap)

Formula 1’s current power unit penalty rules are confusing for fans and require a rethink, according to McLaren’s chief operating officer Jonathan Neale. Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso were given 25 and 20-place grid penalties respectively for changing various parts of their Honda engines in Austria, while both Red Bull drivers also incurred hefty penalties.

Because there are only 20 cars on the grid, Button and Alonso could not take the full penalty and would have thus been hit with time penalties during the race, if they had not retired before being able to serve

them. “It’s a bit strange trying to explain the penalties,” Neale told AUTOSPORT. “If Formula 1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport, there are a number of things which are truisms which we have to deliver. “We have to deliver some constancy of purpose and I find it hard to reconcile that with drivers taking a 25-place penalty on a grid which only has 20 cars.

“We have to be able to explain to the fans what the reason is for this. “And I don’t think we have done a very good job explaining it or thinking through how it will be perceived.

“If I had one observation of the way the regulations have been developed, I would say they have been opportunistic rather than strategic.”

With more engine-related grid penalties inevitable for McLaren in the second-half of the season, Neale hinted that the team could take them tactically at some stage. “We will consider it,” he said. “But to do that we need a degree of predictability.

“There will be some areas where we say we have to sacrifice something here in order to protect something else. “But I think we’re a bit off that at the moment.” (net)

KUALA LUMPUR — A Malaysian minister says Southeast Asian countries will establish a humanitarian fund to help boatloads of Rohingya Muslim and Bangladeshi immigrants who have recently landed in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Zahid Hamidi also says Singapore has pledged $200,000 to the fund at a special regional meeting Thursday on the refugee crisis.

Since early May, more than 4,600 boat people from Myanmar and Bangladesh have come ashore in Southeast Asian waters. The United Nations estimates some 2,000 migrants could still be at sea after human smugglers abandoned their boats amid a regional crackdown. Zahid says he has proposed that each Southeast Asian nation contribute $100,000 each to the fund. (ap)

12 people detained in hotel attack probe

TUNIS — About 12 people have been detained in the investigation into a massacre at a beach resort that killed 38 people, mostly British tourists, a Tunisian official said. Tunisia’s Radio Mosaique reported Thursday that Lazhar Akremi, a senior official with the ruling Nida Tounes party, made the announcement at a party meeting. The report did not elaborate on when or where the arrests occurred.

The Tunisian government is holding a news conference Thursday morning in the capital Tunis about the investigation.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack, in which Tunisian student Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on a beach in the resort of Sousse.

The attacker was later killed by police.

Investigators are searching nationwide for accomplices. A person close

to the investigation told The Associated Press on Monday that seven people had been detained in the probe. At least 27 Britons and other European tourists are confirmed among the dead.

A top security official told the AP this week that the student had trained in a jihadi camp in Libya at the same time as the two men who attacked a leading Tunisian museum in March. That en-

forced the notion of a link between the two assaults and raised fears of more attacks on this North African nation’s budding democracy.

The attack was Tunisia’s deadliest ever, and threatened to be a devastating blow to the country’s tourism sector, which is crucial to the economy and had just started recovering after uncertainty following Arab Spring uprisings. (ap)

MANILA - A ferry carrying 173 passengers capsized Thursday as it left a central Philippine port in choppy waters, leaving at least 36 people dead and 19 others missing, coast guard officials said.

They said at least 118 passengers of

the M/B Kim Nirvana were rescued by nearby fishing boats and coast guard personnel or swam to safety off Ormoc city on Leyte Island.

Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said the ferry was leaving Ormoc for the Camotes Islands, about 44 kilo-

meters (27 miles) to the south, when it was lashed by strong waves.

Survivors told The Associated Press by cellphone that the bow of the ferry suddenly rose from the water before the vessel flipped over on one side and began to sink. (ap)

Witness: Man killed by police told officers ‘shoot me’

SPOKANE, Wash. — The man was angry.

He threw rocks and scuffled with police. He yelled at them to “shoot me, kill me,” before three officers opened fire, according to witnesses to the fatal shooting of an unarmed Mexican immigrant. The shooting sparked weeks of protest. Authorities investigating the Feb. 10 death of Antonio Zambrano-Montes in Pasco on Wednesday released audio files of interviews with witnesses, as well as video.

A prosecutor is deciding whether the three officers who shot Zambrano-Montes should face criminal charges, a process likely to take months.

Two witnesses said Zambrano-Montes told officers to shoot him. Witness Miguel Estrada said he saw Zambrano-Montes throw rocks at officers, then run away. In the files released by authorities, Estrada said Zambrano-Montes screamed: “’If you are gonna shoot me, shoot me.’”

Another witness, Chris Pirtle, also told authorities that Zambrano-Montes dared officers to shoot. “He kept on throwing the rocks, and the cop was telling him, ‘Hey, put down the rock,’” Pirtle said. Zambrano-Montes didn’t comply, witnesses said.

“He just kept telling him, ‘Shoot me, kill me,’” Pirtle said. In one audio file, witness Benjamin Patrick told investigators he yelled at officers after the man was shot. “Why did you just shoot him?” Patrick said he shouted.

“He was trying to get away. What are you guys doing?”

Patrick later said during questioning he wanted to apologize to the officers for his outburst. He did not explain why. Authorities say the 35-year-old Zambrano-Montes had been throwing rocks at passing motorists and police, and a stun gun failed to subdue him before he was shot. Plane’s engine likely failed before deadly crash: air force

MEDAN - The Indonesian military plane that crashed into a residential neighbourhood and killed 142 people likely suffered an engine failure, the air force said Thursday, but denied the aircraft was overloaded after claims civilians had paid to get on board.

The Hercules C-130 transporter went down Tuesday in the city of Medan shortly after taking off from a nearby airbase, exploding in a fireball and causing widespread destruction.

Air Vice Marshal Agus Dwi Putranto, an air force operations commander, told reporters initial findings indicated the 51-year-old plane had failed to gain enough speed after one of its four engines malfunctioned.

“There’s a likelihood that a propeller had stalled,” he said. “Going at a slow speed, the plane swerved to the right and hit an antenna tower.”

He said the pilot had asked to turn back to base shortly after takeoff, adding: “It means there was a problem.”

Witnesses have said the plane was tilting and giving off black smoke just before it crashed into a massage

parlour and hotel in a newly-built residential area.

However Putranto denied the plane was overloaded after the air force repeatedly revised up the number of people on the flight, sparking accusations paying civilians were on board, in violation of military rules.

“It’s unlikely an overcapacity problem,” the commander said. He said that the Hercules can carry 12.5 tonnes but the passengers on the flight would have only weighed about eight tonnes.

There were 122 people aboard the plane, mostly servicemen and women and their families, with the rest of the fatalities thought to have occurred on the ground.

Relatives of some civilians from non-military families have said they paid between 700,000 rupiah ($50)

and one million rupiah to travel on the aircraft. The military has denied taking payments and vowed to investigate.

The search for bodies officially ended late Wednesday, and the air force began transporting coffins of those killed across the vast archipelago for burial.

There were scenes of horror following the crash, with buildings severely damaged, cars reduced to flaming wrecks and the plane almost completely destroyed, with the tail the only part still recognisable.

It was the sixth fatal crash of an Indonesian air force plane in the past decade, according to the Aviation Safety Network, and prompted President Joko Widodo to order an overhaul of the country’s ageing military equipment. (afp)

PALU - The Indonesian government will continue its hunt for terrorists allegedly in Poso district, Central Sulawesi, with the launch of the third Camar Maleo Operation in the near future.

The second Camar Maleo Operation ended on June 7, Head of the Central Sulawesi Police Brigadier General Idham Azis told on Tuesday.

The next operation will be launched by the Anti-Terror Special Detachment 88 Unit of the police force, while Central Sulawesi will provide facilities.

However, hundreds of police personnel, mostly from the Mobile Brigade of the Central Sulawesi Police, will be involved in the task.

The police will continue to look

for members of the Santoso-led East Indonesian Mujahidin (MIT) who are still at large.

Till mid-2015, they arrested more than ten alleged terrorists and their sympathizers in the province, while two of them were shot dead.

Most of the arrested terrorists were taken to Jakarta for interrogation.

In addition, Brigadier General Idham Azis urged local inhabitants of Central Sulawesi to report to relevant authorities any information they may have regarding the whereabouts of the MIT members.

He also called on MIT members to surrender to the authorities with the guarantee that the police will not torture them.

“We will keep on looking for them till we catch them,” he affirmed. (ant)

ATHENS — Greece braced for more chaos on the streets outside its mostly shuttered banks Thursday, as Athens and its creditors halted talks on resolving the country’s deepening financial crisis until a referendum this weekend.

Banks have been closed all week to prevent a crash from mass money withdrawals, while a few have been reopened to help pensioners without ATM cards.

But they are still in business.

The European Central Bank left the terms of its emergency $100 billion cash support to Greece unchanged, a day after Athens slipped into arrears with the International Monetary Fund and its bailout program expired.

The move kept chances alive for a settlement between Greece and

creditors. And Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis publicly thanked the ECB and its president, Mario Draghi, for the decision.

“This allows us to breathe. It’s a very positive move and a move of good will on the part of the European Central Bank. I welcome it,” Varoufakis told state television.

Draghi, he said, had faced down “hawks” among eurozone members who had demanded that Athens increase collateral needed to receive continued assistance.

Asian stock markets advanced

Thursday after gains on Wall Street as strong U.S. payroll data overshadowed worries about the Greek crisis.

Greece is seeking a third bailout from the eurozone rescue fund after the previous deal expired this week without agreement on the terms of final pay outs.

The impasse left billions bailout money frozen or canceled and saw Greece forced to close banks and its stock market for at least a week, while the country’s left-wing government called a referendum urging voters to denounce the previous deal offered by creditors.

Eurozone finance ministers decided to put the talks with Greece on hold till the vote takes place.

“Given the political situation,

the rejection of the previous proposals, the referendum which will take place on Sunday, and the recommendation by the Greek government to vote ‘No,’ we see no grounds for further talks at this point,” Dutch Foreign Minister and eurogroup chairman Jeroen Dijsselbloem said after a late-night teleconference.

“There will be no talks in the coming days.”

In Athens, crowds of anxious elderly Greeks thronged banks Wednesday beginning before dawn, struggling to withdraw their maximum of 120 euros ($134) for the week after the government reopened some banks to help pensioners who don’t have bank cards.

“It’s very bad,” said retired pharmacy worker Popi Stavrakaki, 68. “I’m afraid it will be worse soon. I have no idea why this is happening.”

Greece is in a financial limbo now that its bailout program has expired, cutting it off from vital financing and pushing it one step closer to leaving the euro. It also has become the first developed country to fail to repay a debt to the International Monetary Fund on time. The last country to miss an IMF payment was Zimbabwe in 2001.

As long as it is in arrears on the IMF payment, Greece cannot get any more money from the organization. (ap)

DETROIT — Americans again bought vehicles that sit up high and come loaded with features like backup cameras and smartphone capabilities in June. Horsepower was also in; gas-sipping not so much.

SUVs of all sizes continued to fly off dealer lots. Sales of the larger Ford Explorer rose 30 percent; Nissan’s Rogue small SUV posted a 54 percent jump; and sales of the Jeep Cherokee gained 39 percent.

Total sales rose 3.9 percent over last June to 1.48 million, according to Autodata Corp. For the first half of the year, sales gained 4.4 percent to 8.5 million.

Buoyed by the momentum, the National Automobile Dealers Association this week raised its fullyear sales forecast to 17.2 million vehicles from just under 17 million.

The last time auto sales topped 17 million was in 2001.

Most automakers reported gains for June, led by Nissan with an increase of 13 percent. General Motors’ sales fell, largely because the company cut back on sales to rental-car companies.

Consumers are finding a number of reasons to buy, including an improved job market, low interest rates, a robust stock market and low gas prices. Automakers are also helping themselves by introducing new vehicles faster and loading them up with desirable features.

The average new vehicle cost an estimated $31,948 in June, accord-

ing to the car-buying site TrueCar. com.

High-volume sales of SUVs priced in the low- to mid-$30,000 range are boosting transaction prices, said Larry Dominique, executive vice president, industry solutions, for TrueCar. Another factor: Luxury sales, averaging around $50,000, which Dominique said are “on fire.”

Ford’s Lincoln division notched a 14.5 percent gain, while sales for Nissan’s Infiniti and Toyota’s Lexus luxury units also rose by double digits.

Demand for SUVs is taking a bite out of car sales. Sales of the midsize Ford Fusion dropped 8 percent last month, while sales of Chevy’s compact Cruze slipped 13 percent. Dealers offered promotions in June to clear some smaller cars off their lots. Kia, for example, was offering zero-percent financing for up to 66 months and up to $1,500 on Optima and Forte sedans.

The decline in car sales is partly due to lower gas prices. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. Wednesday was $2.76, compared with $3.67 on July 1, 2014.

Muscle hasn’t lost its appeal.

Sales of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger all rose. Ford sold 11,719 Mustangs, a 54 percent gain and the performance car’s best June since 2007. (ap)

One day before the masegeh tradition is started local residents prepared dozens of calves that are ready to be slaughtered. Equipped with ritual paraphernalia, they hoped the masegeh activities held every full moon in July can run solemnly in the area of Prajapati Temple of the Tambakan customary village.

According to the spouse to the priest of Dalem Temple, Jro Mangku Made Suartini, the tradition known as masegeh aims at making invocation ritual to God. In relation to this ritual, residents present calves. After being given a sacred mantra and holy water, they are ready to be presented should there be any vow at the Dalem Dasar Temple of Tambakan village. Residents of Tambakan have confidence that presentation of calves will give smoothness to their fortune. “We believe in this tradition. Should there be people making a vow in order to earn their living flourishingly, they promise to sacrifice a calf after it has worked.

There are also residents wishing to invoke an offspring. To note, the presentation of calf is made on new moon,” said Suartini.

A total of 28 calves are presented based on the agreement of customary village apparatus to express gratitude of residents for having been endowed with fortune and offspring. The beef obtained from slaughtering calves are equally distributed to all local residents.

This year the committee prepared 28 calves, while last year they sacrificed 22 heads. It is said that residents believe that they do not slaughter haphazard calves, and the man entitled to spear first is the village apparatus. GIANYAR - As a seasonal business before the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan, some traders of penjor decoration and its accessories begin to appear around Gianyar. Although categorized into seasonal business, when Galungan arrives the price and order of penjor can increase up to three times compared to normal days.

Wayan Raini, a trader of penjor decoration and its accessories around Bona, Blahbatuh, admitted that she has provided the stock since mid-June 2015. This was done to anticipate the surge in the demand ahead of Galungan and Kuningan in July 2015. “Our stock is intentionally made to meet the orders from a number of resellers,” she said.

According to her, similar conditions always occur once every six months. Peak demand of the penjor accessories frequently occurs between day seven and day one ahead of Penampahan Galungan.

“Although it is just entering the beginning of July, consumers have started to make a purchase. Probably, they may take into account the price hike that may occur a week before the celebration,” she said.

Nyoman Arya, another trader of penjor accessories around Bedulu, Gianyar. Arya claimed to have started selling since four days ago. Although the demand is still minimal, it does not matter to him because the penjor accessories made from palm leaf is durable until the feast. “The demand is not so much, but when getting closer to Galungan the transaction will be higher,” he said.

He estimated that the price of penjor accessories when approaching the Galungan will increase in the range of 5 percent to 10 percent. Price change occurs because at that time the hunting for penjor accessories will certainly increase sharply. As a result, many traders take advantage of the moment to raise the selling price.

Currently, the price still ranges

from IDR 45,000 to IDR 90,000 for penjor decoration; IDR 75,000 for kolong-kolong; IDR 20,000 to IDR 70,000 for sampian; IDR 20,000 for each meter of a pack of paddy thread consisting of five sets; and IDR 10,000 for kober.

In the meantime, lantern decoration is sold for IDR 20,000 for small size and IDR 125,000 for a large size. However, the large lantern with decoration can reach IDR 700,000. The price is subject to change a few days before the Galungan festivity.

“When wishing to buy penjor accessories, it must be done from now on because in addition to being cheaper many stocks are still available. Moreover, they are made from palm leaves so that they are not easily damaged and last longer,” he said. (nik)

Blacklist warnings spread on websites in North Korea

TOKYO — North Korea, already one of the least-wired places in the world, appears to be cracking down on the use of the Internet by even the small number of foreigners who can access it with relative freedom by blacklisting and blocking social media accounts or websites deemed to carry harmful content.

The move won’t be noticed by most in the North since hardly anyone has access to the Internet.

But it could signal increasing concern in Pyongyang over the flow of real-time photos, tweets and status updates getting out to the world and an attempt to further limit what the few North Koreans able to view the Internet can see.

Warnings, in Korean and English, are now appearing on a wide array of sites, including social media such as Instagram, Tumblr and Flickr and websites like the South Korean news agency Yonhap, along with specific articles about the country. The warnings say the sites have been blacklisted for harmful content and cannot be accessed.

There has been no announcement of a policy change by the North Korean government or the North’s mobile service carrier, Koryolink, a joint venture with Egypt’s Orascom Telecom and Media Technology.

With no official confirmation, it was impossible to rule out the possibility the warnings resulted from a hack of some sort.

The explicit blacklisting of sites would be a break with past practice in North Korea, when officials most likely monitored the Internet activity of foreign users but did so

quietly. The 3G data connection on mobile phones itself has not been disrupted and many sites, including Facebook and Twitter, continued to function normally. But signs of concern that local eyes may be trying to peek into the crack opened for foreigners to use the Internet have been growing.

From late last year, Koryolink began blocking the function that allows smart phones to be turned into wifi hotspots that can share their Internet connection with other nearby devices. Officials last year also tightened restrictions on wifi use at embassies, probably to keep local residents from illegally “piggybacking” off of wifi signals near their compounds.

If not the result of a hack, the scattershot nature of the blacklist warnings and the relative ease with which they can be circumvented would suggest a more tentative and possibly experimental effort at controlling Internet use than the sophisticated Great Firewall that makes it impossible for most Chinese to access Facebook or even the widespread government censorship of Internet sites in South Korea.

“This effort seems a bit random,” said James Lewis, an expert in computer security who is a director and senior fellow at the Washington D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“Why send a warning about some sites, block some, but not block others? Either the DPRK is developing a more comprehensive policy but changed their mind, or they’ve been hacked.” (ap)

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A pilot described by colleagues as nervous and hasty mistakenly throttled down a still-running engine following a glitch with the other engine in an airline crash that killed 43 people in Taiwan in February, flight safety officials said Thursday.

A preliminary investigation after the Feb. 4 crash of TransAsia flight GE235 already had indicated that the pilot shut off the remaining engine after one of them went idle. But the account Thursday by Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council — while not assigning blame — added additional details about the crash and the background of the pilot, including that he had failed a flight simulator test as recently as May 2014. Both the pilot and co-pilot died.

Minutes after takeoff in Taipei, a ribbon-like sensor connector in the automated flight system failed and put one engine into a mode that effectively cut its power to the aircraft, Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council Executive Director Thomas Wang told a news conference.

The engine’s condition, useful in other cases to reduce torque, generated a flame-out warning in the cockpit 37 seconds after takeoff, according to a report by the council.

However, it says the engine itself was technically still capable of providing power to the ATR-72 aircraft. The aircraft was also designed to fly on one engine.

“The sensor connector, in lay-

man’s terms, you would say was in a situation where it didn’t connect normally,” Wang said. Seconds later, the pilot said he would pull back on the throttle to the plane’s other engine, which showed no mechanical trouble, the council’s report indicates. Normally, a pilot would throttle back to cut the flamed-out engine to avoid further problems and rely on the still-running engine for power.

“If engine two has flamed out, you would shut off engine two, that’s normal logic,” Wang said.

Eight seconds before the crash, the council’s report states, the pilot said in Chinese: “Wow, pulled back on the wrong side throttle.”

The pilot in command had failed a flight simulator test in May 2014 and passed it the following month with further training, the council’s report says. He had been described in post-crash interviews with colleagues as “a little nervous during line operations,” and a person who “had a tendency of rushing to perform the procedures without coordination with the (co-pilot),” according to the report.

An automatic system to control power upon takeoff had not been

armed while the plane was on the ground in Taipei but kicked in seconds later, the agency’s report said.

The pilot knew about this outage but authorized takeoff, the report shows. It was not clear if that glitch had any connection with the engine going idle. The automatic takeoff power control system maker in the United States has joined Taiwan’s investigation, Wang said.

The flight had left Taipei’s Songshan airport for the outlying Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen. Video captured on dashboard cameras showed the plane flying on its side over an elevated road, clipping a fence, light pole and passing taxi shortly before plunging into the Keelung River in a heavily populated part of Taipei. The flight was carrying 53 passengers, three crew members and two flight attendants. Fifteen people escaped the aircraft alive.

The 64-year-old airline had no immediate comment on the Aviation Safety Council’s findings, but a company publicist said officials may make a statement later Thursday. Another domestic TransAsia flight crashed on July 23 last year, killing 48 people aboard. (ap)

Rousteing, 29, said after the show that “Balmain man” was someone exactly like him: “Someone who is discovering the world, travelling as an adventurer, trying to find new treasures.”

The show was one of the most hotly-awaited events of men’s fashion week, and British Olympic diver Tom Daley and reality TV star Kris Jenner -- whose daughter Kim Kardashian is one of Rousteing’s army of celebrity friends -- were among the crowds.

Men’s fashion now accounts for 40 percent of Balmain’s sales, but Rousteing justified the decision to sneak a few female models onto the catwalk to show off his new womenswear.

“The womenswear is really

close to my menswear,” he said.

“For lots of brands, the man and the woman are really different, (whereas for me) it’s the same DNA.” Dior Homme, meanwhile, went for a blend of traditional elegance and sportswear for its spring/summer 2016 collection, with artistic director Kris Van Assche paying homage to both the bomber jacket and the blazer.

“I tried to redefine a new bourgeois look -- one that knows all its parents’ rules, that understands

elegance, but mixes these with the rules of the street, with something cooler,” the Belgian designer told AFP. The bomber jacket, a streetwear staple, got a middle-class makeover in the collection by being embroidered with white roses -- Christian Dior’s favourite flowers -- while Van Assche drove the culture clash home by mixing camouflage fabric with the diamond-shaped Argyll patterning beloved of golf club members.

work of American artist Kristin McKirdy.

“I’m not known for my use of colour, and in her work I’ve found a way to embed it, almost a way to infiltrate it,” he said. “We ended up doing a collaboration.”

The results of that collaboration could be seen dangling from the hands of Dior’s models and swinging from their necks, in the form of large pendants using the bright colour scheme.

Bali reports 2.13 percent increase in exports DENPASAR - Bali recorded 2.13 percent increase in exports to US$223.75 million in the first five months of this year from US$219.07 million in the same period last year.

“Small and cottage industries contributed 74 percent to the total export earning,” head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Panusunan Siregar said on Thursday. Siregar said exports in May alone shipped from a number of ports in Indonesia were valued at US$45.64 million down 5.73 percent from US$48.42 million in the previous month.

“The export earning in May this year, however, was still higher

than US$40.6 million in the same month last year,” he said.

Exports via the Benoa port of Denpasar accounted for only 40.79 percent valued at US$15.24 million in May. The largest part was exported via East Java port accounting for 58.15 percent valued at US$30.10 million nand via Jakarta port accounting for 1.03 percent valued at US$274,605 and via Central Java 0.03% valued at US$3,731.

Panasunan Siregar said the

main export destinations are Japan, accounting for 25.26 percent, the United States for 18.88 percent, Singapore 6.97 percent, Australia 5.56 percent and Hong Kong 5.52 percent.

The main export commodities are fish and shrimp accounting for 35.38 percent, jewelry for 10.55 percent, non knitted ready made wear 9.42 percent, timber and timber products 9.08 percent and furniture 7.86 percent. (ant)

Donna Karan stepping down as chief designer for her company

NEW YORK — Donna Karan will step down from daily duties as chief designer at her namesake company, Donna Karan International, to devote more time to her philanthropic foundation.

She’ll remain a close adviser, according to a company statement released Tuesday.

Karan, 66, co-founded the company in 1984. It went public in 1996. And in 2001, LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton invested and helped grow it globally. It now sells apparel, sportswear, accessories and shoes under the Donna Karan New York and DKNY brands.

The company said it will not immediately seek to replace Karan as designer, suspending runway shows and collections for a “period of time.”

Karan, known for helping women streamline their look through basic

pieces, expressed gratitude and “my deepest feelings” to colleagues.

“Donna Karan New York is a part of me, past, present and future,” she said in the statement. “It has been an honor to speak woman to woman about seven easy pieces that forever changed the way women dress.”

Reaction was swift as insiders lauded Karan as a visionary, with the Council of Fashion Designers of America tweeting: “The end of an era! Donna Karan departs DKI.” Karan said she made the decision after much “soul-searching,” adding: “I have arrived at a point in my life where I need to spend more time to pursue my Urban Zen commitment to its fullest potential.”

She was referring to Urban Zen Company and Foundation, a philanthropy that works around the world on health care

and education. Urban Zen sells luxury goods in partnership with artisans, with proceeds benefiting projects.

Pierre-Yves Roussel, chairman and CEO of LVMH Fashion Group, called it a privilege to collaborate with Karan and said LVMH was committed to “staying true to the spirit and value Donna has championed” for more than three decades.

Early on, Karan’s seven easy pieces provided a modern system for women with the goal of simplifying their wardrobes without sacrificing elegance or sensuality. With a younger, urban customer in mind, she added DKNY five years after starting the company.

Illegal fishermen operates at Manta Point

SEMARAPURA - The Nusa Penida water conservation area (KKP) is frequented by illegal fishing vessels operating to catch fish in the area. The illegal fishermen can catch lobster and fish amounting to tens of kilograms each day.

Such illegal fishing is only known after there is a report from the surrounding community.

A resident of Nusa Penida, I Ketut Selasa, 35, revealed previously that he often heard the sound of explosions at night from his home happened to be close to the beach. This man from Saren II hamlet, Batumadeg village, knows the action of the illegal fishermen catching fish around the water conservation area when escorting guests to Guyangan spring. The fishing vessel is very suspicious. “Without further a do, I inform this incident to the officer,” he said.

Following the report, according to him, condition of the water conservation area is now much different considering that the illegal fishermen no longer dare to approach the waters of Nusa Penida. More seriously, in a day the fishermen can catch 30 kg of lobster and 50 kg of fish.

According to the Head of the Nusa Penida water conservation area, I Nyoman Karyawan, public participation in preserving the conservation area from the damage caused by illegal operation of vessels is desirable.

To that end, his party gives an award to participating communities that have provided information about illegal fishing vessels. “Active role of the community is very much needed.

Entering drought, rivers in Buleleng start to dry out

Since designated as a World Cultural Heritage in 2012 and green belt area, tourist visits to the area of Jatiluwih continues to increase especially after the establishment of the governing body. However, since it belongs to green belt area, it is not allowed to build tourism facilities like accommodations and restaurants.

TABANAN - Since designated as a World Cultural Heritage in 2012 and green belt area, tourist visits to the area of Jatiluwih continues to increase especially after the establishment of the governing body. However, since it belongs to green belt area, it is not allowed to build tourism facilities like accommodations and restaurants. Actually, the accommodation is very important to support tourism, especially to provide facilities for travelers so that it increases tourist visits. To that end, it is important to think about which zone at Jatiluwih can be built to meet the needs of the accommodation.

The Head of Tabanan Revenue Service and Traditional Irrigation, Nyoman Sudarma, said on Wednesday (Jul. 1) that so far there is no clear zoning determination where at Jatiluwih area is allowed and not allowed to build, primarily the development of tourism facilities such as lodging and restaurants. Other than the accommodation, Jatiluwih also needs a parking lot. “Is it necessary to provide parking space near the Jatiluwih area and then provided with shuttle service by small vehicles to deliver travelers to the cultural heritage site,” said Sudarma.

To favor the environmental preservation, especially the agricultural sector in the area of Jatiluwih

cultural heritage, according to Sudarma, there has been distribution of revenue to subsidize the implementation of tax relief in the region up to 50 percent. Tax relief is provided for 14 subak areas including in the green belt area. “In addition to green belt areas at Jatiluwih, the tax relief is also given to other green belts,” said Sudarma. In total, the green belt area in Tabanan reaches 2,000 hectares.

In the meantime, the revenue distribution of the Jatiluwih cultural heritage, in accordance with the agreement stipulated on December 27, 2013, the Tabanan County gets 45 percent and 55 percent is allocated to Jatiluwih village. The 55 percent is then distributed to Jatiluwih administrative village

(25 percent), Jatiluwih customary village (30 percent), Gunung Sari customary village (20 percent), Subak Jatiluwih (21 percent), and Subak Abian Jatiluwih and Subak Abian Gunung Sari respectively gets 2 percent. “This revenue distribution is one of the concerns of local government to subak including its farmers. With this revenue distribution they are expected to maintain the tradition as well as the preservation of the agricultural areas at Jatiluwih,” he said.

Related to preserving the cultural heritage area of Jatiluwih, his party also expects the participation of provincial and central government where the government of Tabanan is unable to help considering that it has limited budget. (kmb24)

SINGARAJA - Entering dry season this year, most of the rivers in Buleleng begin to dry out. By all means, this situation becomes an annual problem and threatens the agricultural activities in North Bali.

Moreover, the source of agricultural irrigation in North Bali largely relies on the flow of river water.

As the data collected in the field on Wednesday (Jul. 1), most of the rivers in Tejakula subdistrict have dried up since the beginning of this dry season. The river flow seems to dry up where the river bed and sand on the river bank have been clearly seen. Similar condition also happens to the rivers in the area of Gerokgak.

In this region, the river flow has totally dried out. Moreover, some streams have changed into a footpath leading to plantation of local residents.

In the other areas, the rivers still drain off water for irrigation. From the data in the Buleleng Public Works Agency, the streams remaining to be functioned for agricultural irrigation and plantation only amount to a dozen rivers.

On entering this dry season, the discharge of river water also starts to diminish. Automatically this situation slightly threatens so that the agriculture in North Bali will experience drought this year.

The Head of the Buleleng Public Works Agency, Nyoman Gede Suryawan, when asked for his confirmation on Wednesday (Jul. 1) did not dismiss if during dry season the rivers in Buleleng have dried up. Furthermore, Suryawan added that those rivers are actually categorized into rain-fed rivers. In other words, the rivers will only drain off water during rainy season. In the meantime, during dry season the water flow will automatically and totally dry. “Dry rivers are located in East and West Buleleng. These rivers

also drain off water in rainy season only and when dry season comes, the rivers automatically dry out,” he said.

According to Suryawan, when entering this dry season his party has made intensive monitoring. This monitoring is focused on the rivers remaining to be functioned to support the agriculture and plantation of residents. From the data collection, it is obtained that about 16 rivers in several subdistricts in Buleleng remain to drain off water.

Condition of the water discharge in these rivers recently began to decline due to the effect of dry season. With this condition, his party has made coordination with related agencies in this case the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency to make farmers aware of the decline in water flow for the irrigation of their agriculture and plantations. “Its discharge has gone down and we have coordinated this with the Agency in order to urge farmers to wary the decline in the water flow so that it will not cause drought and disturb their plants,” he added.

In the meantime, the information obtained from the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency mentions that on entering this dry season the majority of farmers have already planted such as beans and tobacco. Only a few farmers force themselves to grow rice despite the dry season. Generally, farmers remaining to plant rice get stable supply of irrigation water. This can be found at the villages like the Panji, Sukasada subdistrict, Baktiseraga, Pemaron, Tukadmungga, and other villages in North Bali. Farmers at these villages have even anticipated the shortage of water by utilizing water of their wells. To drain this water, farmers are forced to use pumps. (kmb38)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — As audiences gear up to see Paul Rudd become Marvel’s smallest superhero in “Ant-Man,” the actor candidly reminisced about the legacy he was leaving on Wednesday as he received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Rudd, 46, best known for films such as “This is 40” and “Anchorman,” deployed his usual sense of humor as he unveiled the 2,554th star on the landmark mile-long strip of plaques on Hollywood Boulevard.

“I remember being a kid and walking this boulevard and reading the names and thinking about what so many other millions of people thought about, which is, you know, who’s that?” the actor said.

“The fact that millions of people are going to be able to now see me and ask that same question, for time immemorial, is humbling beyond belief.”

In “Ant-Man,” out in theaters on July 17, Rudd stars as a petty thief

named Scott Lang, who acquires a special suit that gives him the ability to shrink in size yet gain superhuman strength, allowing him to use his talents to save the world.

The film is based off a character written by Stan Lee, which first appeared in Marvel Comic books in the early 1960s.

Rudd’s co-star Michael Douglas, who plays scientist Hank Pym, said that he was amused at how much fun Rudd had donning the superhero costume for the film.

“He was like the kid in the candy shop, I’ve never seen anybody have so much fun in my life,” said Douglas.

Since the release of “Clueless” in 1995, Rudd has become a film

comedy mainstay, with appearances in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up” and “I Love You, Man.” He has also appeared on the television sitcoms “Friends” and “Parks and Recreation,” and was joined by “Parks” co-star Adam Scott at his star unveiling.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame has honored influential figures in entertainment since 1960.

Recipients of the star-shaped plaques, which are cemented into the sidewalk, are approved by Hollywood’s Chamber of Commerce.

LONDON - Known for his toned torso and abs, often on display in the “Magic Mike” male stripper saga, Hollywood actor Channing Tatum says he will no longer be keeping up his intense workout regime and instead champion the latest trend - a “dad bod” .

Tatum, who returns as Mike in “Magic Mike XXL”, said he was hoping to make the less fit-looking male body look more popular.

The term came to prominence this year after a U.S. student wrote an article about the male physique in which she described it as “a nice balance between a beer gut and working out”. Her idea went viral and the “dad bod” took the Internet by storm.
