NEW YORK — CBS says Jennifer Love Hewitt is joining the cast of “Criminal Minds” this fall.

She will play Kate Callahan, a seasoned undercover agent whose superior work at the FBI has earned her a place in the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

CBS says her “Criminal Minds” character will be introduced in the series’ 10th season premiere, set to air Oct. 1.

The “Criminal Minds” cast also includes Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore and A.J. Cook.

NEW YORK — Tori Spelling can crack Jennie Garth up. When thinking of an upcoming scene from their new ABC Family sitcom, “Mystery Girls,” Garth giggles at the memory of Spelling going for it, making a funny face and using a strange voice. That’s just one reason the two like to work together.

“I feel safe doing some, like, goofy, crazy face and voice because it’s my friend.

I know she’s gonna be there to support my efforts,” explained Spelling in a recent interview.

“She knows I love it,” added Garth, who readily admits she’s the first to break character in a scene.

Unless you skipped the 1990s, you know they were co-stars on one of the most popular TV shows of that era, “Beverly Hills, 90210,” about teens living in the exclusive Southern California zip code.

It went off the air after 10 seasons in 2000 but Spelling and Garth have remained friends. They even briefly reprised their roles for the CW’s “90210” reboot.

Spelling guest starred on a couple of episodes. Garth appeared on the first two seasons.

They never expected to work together full-time again but Spelling came up for the premise and it all fell into place. On “Mystery Girls,” Garth and Spelling play former co-stars of a hit 90s detective TV show of the same name. They’ve gone their separate ways, until a crime occurs, and the witness will only talk to them. From this, they end up opening a detective agency.

They chose to do a sitcom because, “it’s more fun than doing a drama,” said Garth.

“The schedule, the hours. We both have a lot of kids so it’s like banker’s hours compared to doing an episodic show like an hour-long drama or something.”

At the moment, Badung government will perform data collection and dissemination to the public regarding the existing condition of each coastal region. As planned, the beaches in Kuta subdistrict such as Seminyak, Legian and Kuta will be chosen as the next target.

The Head of Badung Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, I Made Badra, revealed that the coastal arrangement program in Badung was being coordinated with central and provincial government through the Bali-Penida River Agency.

Besides, the coordination team for the coastal arrangement in Badung had been established through the Decree of the Badung Regent in 2014.

The coordination team just needed to make data collection and dissemination to the public regarding the existing condition of each coastal area in Badung. Later, the team with the Bali-Penida River Agency would design a strategic

program to continue the handling and management of the coastal abrasion. “So, if there are some stretches of the beach needing to be arranged, they will be proposed to central government,” said Badra.

According to him, the coastal area of Legian, Seminyak and Kuta had been included in the arrangement program.

However, he could not ascertain when the arrangement began. His party mentioned it needed time to disseminate it to the public. This arrangement posed the continuation of the previous arrangement on Cemagi Beach, North Kuta subdistrict undergoing severe abrasion.

“The coastal area at Cemagi was handled last year along 400 meters. We have now started conducting the search of location and the arrangement will be continued to the south coast because some sections need handling such as around Centro, Kuta. The sand around the area is still eroded,” he said.

Regarding the technical matters, said Badra, it belonged to the authority of the Bali-Penida River Agency. The Badung Livestock, Fishery and Maritime Affairs only made coordination for the handling and disseminate information to the public so it could be entirely received by the community.

He said the central government through a special team would conduct an assessment against the proposal of the abrasion handling in Badung that had been filed. The team also included the lender. As planned, the abrasion handling in Badung would use a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). (kmb25)

To combat HIV/AIDS, Tabanan Health Agency prepares counselors Bali Post

TABANAN - In Bali, Tabanan County is arguably ranked fourth in the case of HIV/AIDS or the position may have been overtaken by other county whose number of HIV case starts experiencing a surge lately. Evidently, until this year the data of the Tabanan Health Agency indicate that people with HIV/AIDS have reached 630 cases. Averagely they are 30-40 years old. More sadly, the HIV/AIDS case has even spread to rural areas.

To minimize the number of such hazardous disease, the Tabanan Health Agency would prepare nurses and midwives from each public health center to become HIV/AIDS counselors.

“Essentially, we prepare counselors and supervisors at the village level. At least, a total of 20 counselors will be given the education for six days,” said the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Suratmika, Tuesday (Jul 1).

He added, in preparing the counselor, the focus would be on supervision and coaching on the transmission of HIV/AIDS at village level.

“We will prepare all the nurses and midwives as a Local Regional Monitor (PWS) at each village,” he said.

They would consist of nurses and midwives posing the representative of twenty public health centers throughout Tabanan. “In the future, they will oversee the potential of HIV/AIDS transmission in their respective territory. Our target is to provide counseling and testing for potential residents infected by HIV/AIDS, where one of them is pregnant woman,” he said.

He said that his party deliberately involved the midwives because the medical personnel were considered to be very familiar with prospective housewives who frequently performed prenatal care or childbirth consultation.

The counselor training was given by the

officers of the Bali AIDS Mitigation Commission. According to Suratmika, healthy lifestyle and safe behavior should be improved further.

Moreover, the impact of the closing of the Dolly prostitute house in Surabaya had begun to be a threat to Bali, without exception for Tabanan as the closest potential area for the migration. He said there were a number of factors causing the number of HIV AIDS case to continuously rise in Tabanan. Firstly, public awareness was low to do medical checkup so that the case could be recorded. Secondly, the real amount indeed increased as a result of the number of patients due to aberrant behavior.

Thirdly, proliferation of cafés to nook and cranny of villages was likely to become one of the causes.

“These cafés have double function. On the one hand, they sell food and beverages, while on the other hand, they serve as a place of prostitution transaction. It’s very worrying,” he said.

According to him, the existence of those cafés had to be monitored so as not to deviate. In response to these conditions, his party could only make socialization about the prevention of HIV disease and remind the public so as to always give priority to healthy lifestyle. (kmb28)

BANGLI - Coinciding with the 68th anniversary of the Police Corps (Bhayangkara), the ranks of Bangli Police exterminated hundreds of liters of liquor, Tuesday (Jul 1). Located at the courtyard of the Bangli Police Headquarters, the extermination of the liquor obtained in the ‘operation of creating condition’ was undertaken in person by Chief of Bangli Police, Suswanto, Commander of Bangli/1626 Military District,

the regent and other leadership council of Bangli.

The extermination to hundreds of liters of liquor in the form of 362 large bottles of beer, 216 bottles of small beer and 654 liters of arrack was done by disposing them into a ditch in front of the Bangli Police Headquarters. It was deliberately not carried out by breaking or crushing the bottles with heavy equipment to avoid hazardous waste.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

U.S. agency taps medical centers to investigate rare diseases Reuters

CHICAGO - The U.S. government’s leading health research agency said on Tuesday it has selected six U.S. academic medical centers to help discover the cause of undiagnosed diseases using advanced diagnostic tools, including gene sequencing.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) said the six centers will expand the work of a pilot program at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, that for the past six years has evaluated hundreds of patients and provided many diagnoses, often using genomic approaches, for rare conditions.

Together, the centers will form the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases

Network, funded by a four-year, $43 million grant from the NIH Common Fund.

Dr Eric Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the NIH, said in a telephone briefing the sites will focus on “very rare” diseases, those which in some cases affect only 50 people in the world.

The academic centers selected

to participate include Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; Harvard University’s three teaching hospitals: Boston Children’s, Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General; Duke University in Durham, North Carolina; Stanford University in Stanford, California; University of California, Los Angeles; and Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Green said the centers will use newly developed methods for genome sequencing, along with clinical evaluations, to decipher the causes of rare, undiagnosed conditions.

Undiagnosed diseases are conditions that even skilled physicians cannot diagnose despite extensive testing. Although each disease is considered rare, as many as 30 million Americans have a rare disease, which collectively affects about 1 in 10 Americans.

Insurance coverage of genomic testing to discover the cause of rare disease has become a growing issue at some academic medical centers, including Baylor, that

have been using the technology to help doctors diagnose rare disease.

The NIH said that while each site may have different approaches for handling health insurance coverage, no patient will be turned away from participating based on lack of insurance.

Researchers in the program will share genomic data from the patients enrolled in the centers in multiple public databases, expanding the knowledge of genes that can cause rare disease, which insurance companies have cited as a barrier to coverage.

Harvard University will serve as the coordinating site for the network.

WASHINGTON - Some childhood vaccines are linked to serious side effects, but they are quite rare and do not include autism, food allergies or cancer, said a review of scientific literature Tuesday.

A host of vaccines commonly given to children under age six were the focus of the systematic review of rigorously conducted studies, published in the peerreviewed US journal Pediatrics.

The report seeks to address a rising trend of vaccine hesitancy among parents in the United States and Europe, which has led to a resurgence of measles and whooping cough in some parts of the world.

“We found that serious adverse events that are linked to vaccines are really rare, and that when they do occur they are often not necessarily severe,” said study co-author Courtney Gidengil, a pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School.

“We think this adds to the body of evidence that the benefits really do seem to clearly outweigh the low risk of serious side effects from vaccines,” she told AFP. The study expands on a 2011 report by the Institute of Medicine that also pointed to some side effects linked to vaccines but found “few health problems are caused by or clearly associated with vaccines.”

The Pediatrics report includes several vaccines that were not studied by the IOM, including those

against hepatitis A, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), polio, rotavirus and the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

Side effects

Side effects of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and pneumococcal vaccines included the potential for fever and seizures.

The MMR and hepatitis A vaccines were also linked to a side effect called purpura, when small blood vessels leak under the skin.

There was some evidence that immune-deficient children given the varicella vaccine against chicken pox could develop infections or have an allergic reaction.

The rotavirus vaccines, RotaTeq and Rotarix, were associated with a risk of intussusception, a condition in which one part of the intestine slides into another part.

However, the risk of this condition was rare, amounting to between 1-5 in 100,000, the researchers said.

“Clinicians who immunize children regularly may have encountered these adverse events in their practices, particularly seizures associated with fever,” said an accompanying editorial by Carrie Byington, vice chair for research in the pediatrics department at the University of Utah.

“Fortunately, the adverse events identified by the authors were rare and in most cases would be expected to resolve completely after the acute event.”

No fatalities were found in the research, which spanned from 2010

MANGUPURA - The Indonesian government is now allowing the elderly foreign travelers to longer enjoy the natural beauty of Indonesia, including Bali. Such a policy was stipulated in Presidential Decree No.31/1998 on the ease for the elderly foreign travelers.

The Head of Special Immigration Office of Class I at Ngurah Rai, Cucu Koswali, stated the policy of Indonesian government for the elderly travelers who wanted to stay longer in Indonesia was up to 1 year. They could extend their residence provided that they had a sponsor or guarantor.

“Without a guarantee, their residence permit cannot be extended and they must go home. However, if they have a guarantor, it may be extended for five times in succession,” said Cucu Koswali amidst the socialization recently.

According to him, the extension of the length of stay for the elderly foreign travelers was an old policy, but it contained some new changes required to be re-socialized. The policy was to accommodate the elderly travelers who wanted to enjoy their longer stay in Indonesian. In addition, it was also economically beneficial for the economy of local people.

“It needs to be re-socialized because it is feared there will be deviations from the provisions. For instance, the elderly travelers do not live at the home of Indonesian residents or if they contract a house, no Indonesian maids work in their house, so it does not to give any benefits to local community. To that end, it needs to be reminded again,” he explained.

It was said the policy was enforced selectively, where the policy was only valid for foreigners benefiting the welfare of the people, the nation and the Republic of Indonesia and did not jeopardize the security and the order. Similarly, they were not hostile to both the people and the Homeland based on the Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.

“Only those who are beneficial to the development we can accept. To that end, we apply a selective policy, not all foreigners can be granted a residence permit because their presence is not useful or beneficial to us,” he said.

As mentioned, the requirement to be met by the elderly travelers was filing a visa application to consulate office abroad. After a long stay, it was converted into a limited residence permit (ITAS) for a year. “After that, the extension can be made on the basis of sponsor and can be extended five times,” he said.

Extension of a Limited Residence Permit (ITAS) for the elderly was given by the Head of Immigration Office whose jurisdiction including the residence of foreigners for a maximal period of 1 year. It was valid since the expiry date of the ITAS. Extension of the limited residence permit was given maximally five times in succession according to provisions.

“The elderly foreign travelers are those aged at least 55 years old,” he said.

He added the application of visa or immigration permits should be applied by the foreigners through Indonesian travel agencies for the elderly or through its correspondence overseas. (kmb27)

Exports to the United States made up 20.82 percent to and to Singapore 14.62 percent of the Bali’s total exports, Siregar said.

he added.

Other main export commodities from Bali are fish and shrimps accounting for 22.14 percent, furniture and house illumination for 14.06 percent, timber products 11.82 percent, jewelry 10.66 percent, and garment 9.66 percent.

SEMARAPURA - Following the reveal of the mutilation case, a number of food stalls complained. It was triggered by the rumors if the flesh of the mutilation victim was sold to a number of food stalls, especially to satay vendors. Moreover, the victim’s flesh has not been found. Thus, many people of Klungkung are influenced by the rumor. As a result, the income of satay vendors in the past weeks drops to 80 percent.

Such condition was recognized by one of the families of mutton satay traders, Hajj Karto, when met at his home at Kampung Jawa, Semarapura Klod Kangin, Klungkung, Tuesday (Jul 1). Karto said that his food stall was under Inti supermarket. The food stall had been managed by his sister Sapiah since more than 50 years ago.

However, after the mutilation case was revealed on Monday (Jun 23), a rumor spread if the suspect Fikri had sold the flesh of mutilation victim Diana Sari aka Nana, 22, to number of traders of mutton satay and meatballs at some areas in Klungkung and Gianyar. Actually, police or the media never published such information. “At first, I heard the rumor circulating at Galiran Market. Actually, I do not really understand why the flesh was rumored to have been sold to us. Probably, they thought we could not distinguish human flesh from mutton,” said Karto.

Although the source of information was unclear, many people of Klungkung were influenced by the rumors. As a result, the traders of chicken and mutton satay were deserted. Karto said he habitually slaughtered eight to nine goats each day. However, in the past week, the needs for mutton at his sister’s food stall slumped. “Now, we can only spend two heads each day, one in the

morning and another in the afternoon. Previously, many people coming, but now they even do not dare to pass,” he complained.

He also denied if his food stall was once used by police to perform reconstruction and fitted with police lines. Even, a number of residents accused him of buying the flesh of Nana from the suspect Fikri. “If I am getting involved in this case, why am I never summoned by police? What is the evidence? I always try to be honest with what I sell to customers so that my food stall can get crowded,” he said.

As a result of this situation, his party was also confused to hire eight employees. He intended to lay off six employees because the situation kept getting deserted.

However, the effort was not yet done. He claimed to be sorry to see if his employees had to stop working. Moreover, most of them had got married. For a butcher, he paid at IDR 150,000 per day.

Meanwhile, the employees at food stall were paid at IDR 80,000 to IDR 90,000 per day. Currently, he still held on with the existing situation. However, he began to reduce the supply of mutton brought in from Lumajang, East Java, Karangasem and Singaraja. In the past, when it was still crowded, he claimed to bring in 20 heads to 25 heads of goat. “Now, I stop the entire

supply for a while,” he said. He hoped that police could clarify the rumor. Otherwise, the rumor would prolong and he worried that his business

could go bankrupt.

Meanwhile, being frustrated with this issue, a number of satay traders in Klungkung finally complained to Klungkung Police headquarters, Tuesday. It was admitted by the Chief of Klungkung Police Criminal Investigation Unit, I Nyoman Wirajaya.

Ultimately, the suspect Fikri in the room of Wirajaya asserted that after mutilating Nana, the flesh was not sold anywhere but wrapped in black plastic bags. After that, the flesh was disposed with other mutilated body parts to 13 crime scenes in Klungkung and Karangasem. Then, why was the victim’s flesh not found? Wirajaya added the flesh might have been eaten by animal nearby like a lizard. Clearly, the results of the investigation indicated if the victim’s flesh was not sold anywhere.

“I was even afraid when disposing it.

Such a rumor is not correct. No portions of the flesh were sold. I’ve disposed them all,” said Fikri. Every day, he recognized to do activities and helped install the structure of food stall under the Inti supermarket. The location was quite close to the food stall owned by Hajj Karto. TABANAN - People were encouraged to remain cautious in choosing snacks because the snacks sold are not always safe to consume.

Evidently, in the inspection held by the Agency of Drug and Food Control (BBPOM) Denpasar in collaboration with the Tabanan Health Agency and Tabanan Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency was found at least two types of snacks containing Rhodamine B (textile dye). One of the snacks was begina commonly used to fill in offerings. Though it was not consumed by residents, it remained hazardous. After being used for offerings, the snack is primarily given to livestock such as chickens and pigs.

“If the livestock were slaughtered and then consumed, then those chemicals will be going into our body because they are not biodegradable,” explained the Certification Section Head of the BBPOM Denpasar, Wayan Bagiarta, accompanied by the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Suratmika, after the inspection at Dauh Pala Market, Dauh Peken village, Tabanan, Monday (Jul 2).

Further he said that of the 14 samples of the type of food examined directly by means of test kit, it was found that two samples were positive to contain hazardous ingredients of Rhodamine B. He called on people not to utilize textile dyes in food because consuming it could cause cancer.

“Especially the begina snack should not be given to pigs, but thrown away after being used in offerings,” he explained.

In addition to foods containing textile dyes, the officers also found a number of expired food products, such as bread flour, seasonings and sauces. The officers also found a traditional herbal drink without circulation permit. Siti, a butcher and grocery seller admitted that she did not know if any of the products on sale had expired. “I just knew it today because I have never made double-check related to the expiration.

Now, I am going to ask for product replacement so that I do not lose,” she explained.

In line with Siti, another grocery seller, Ketut Narsa, equally did not think if a number of goods offered had been expired. He also claimed to never recheck the goods purchased, even to check their distribution permit.

Responding to the findings, Wayan Bagiarta also directly provided guidance and insight to a number of traders encountered. According to him, to avoid any expired goods, the traders should be more careful when purchasing a product to be sold. “And the FIFO (first in first out) system must be applied where the goods purchased first must be sold first,” he said.

Other than inspecting hazardous ingredients and expired food and drink, he also advised the Chief of Dauh Pala Market to always maintain the sanitation. According to him, although the products on sale had good quality, it would remain unsafe and unhealthy if condition of the market did not support. SAN JOSE LAS FLORES — The mother of a Guatemalan boy whose body was found in the desert about a mile from Texas’ southern border said Tuesday she begged him not to make the dangerous journey from their modest cinder block- and sheet-metal home high in the northern Cuchumatanes mountains. But Cipriana Juarez Diaz, ailing and bedridden, said her son Gilberto told her he wanted to earn money to help her.

“I told him not to go but he wanted to help me get rid of my illness,” Juarez Diaz, who has epilepsy, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. She said she draped him with a white rosary as he left. “He was a good son,” she said. “I just hope God gives me the strength to bear seeing his body when they bring him to me.”

Gilberto Francisco Ramos Juarez was found with the rosary still around his neck and a brother’s Chicago phone number scribbled on the inside of his belt buckle about two weeks ago. He was alone in brush less than a mile from the nearest U.S. home, a South Texas sheriff said Monday. He apparently got lost on his way north and likely died from the elements.

An autopsy did not find signs of trauma. His birth certificate says he was 11 years old. But his father, Francisco Ramos Diaz, said Tuesday that the boy was really 15.

Ramos Diaz said Gilberto’s birth certificate carried the birth date of his younger brother because it took the family several years to register him. Because the parents couldn’t remember the exact date of Gilberto’s birth, they gave the same date for both young sons, who became listed as twins.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong police arrested more than 500 people who refused to leave a street in the city’s financial district Wednesday, a day after tens of thousands of people joined a massive march to demand democracy that’s free from China’s interference. The march has become an annual affair held on the anniversary of the day China took over Hong Kong from Britain on June 1, 1997 with the promise to give the city a high degree of autonomy for 50 years. But there is growing unease among its residents — especially the youth — that the Western-style civil liberties they’ve know all their lives are being eroded as Beijing has increasingly tried to impose its authority over the freewheeling capitalist enclave.

The fears are only going to be heightened following the pre-dawn crackdown by the Hong Kong police, who normally do not have an antagonistic relationship with the people, unlike the security forces in mainland China.

Police said 511 people were arrested for unlawful assembly in the Central business district and preventing police from carrying out their duties. After warnings failed to dislodge them, the police moved in to remove the protesters, who lay down on the street with arms locked, taking them away one by one. The protesters had vowed to stay until 8 a.m., just before the height of rush hour begins, but the police started moving in to evict them at about 3 a.m.

Some left willingly but others were forcibly removed, taken away by officers on both arms or carried away off the ground. One officer stood behind a protester and put an

arm around the man’s neck as he and other officers tried to pull his hands free, knocking off the eyeglasses of the demonstrator he was clinging to.

Those arrested were mostly students who had decided to occupy Chater Road after taking part in Tuesday’s rally, which police said attracted 98,000 people at its peak. Organizers said 510,000 people turned out, the highest estimates in a decade. Hong Kong researchers put the number at between 154,000 and 172,000. Whatever the numbers, the march and the vehemence of opposition is certain to raise the alarm in Beijing, which tried to keep the news away from people in mainland China.

The Chinese media predictably did not report it, and comments about the protests were deleted from microblogs and other social media.

Some users posted comments saying friends’ accounts were blocked after they discussed the protests. A

Hong Kong protester, Kennie Chan, lamented that Beijing was less restrained now in exerting its influence over Hong Kong.

“In the past, it seemed like they were doing it step by step, but now, it’s obvious that they cannot stand Hong Kong people. We are not obedient anymore, and are resisting more and more,” said the 30-yearold, who works as a stage manager.

China’s Communist leaders have pledged to allow Hong Kong residents to vote for the leader by 2017.

However, they’ve rejected calls to allow the public to name candidates, insisting instead that they be vetted by a Beijing-friendly committee like the one that has hand-picked all leaders since the handover.

Also, three weeks ago, the Chinese government released a so-called white paper that said Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy is not inherent but is authorized by the central government in Beijing.

BEIJING — Asian stocks were mostly higher Wednesday on improved U.S. and Chinese economic activity. The regional heavyweight, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225, gained 0.5 percent to 15,406.03 points. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 1 percent to 23,409.33 and Taipei, Seoul and Sydney also gained. China’s benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.2 percent at 2,046.25.

Traders were encouraged by surveys showing China’s manufacturing activity improved in June for the first time in six months. That came on top of the government’s decision to expand credit by allowing banks to lend more relative to the size of their deposits.

Both developments “bode well for growth,” said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

In the United States, the Institute for Supply Management said manufacturing activity grew in June, though at a slower pace than in May. “Markets saw this as a positive,” said CMC Markets in a report.

Taiwan’s Taiex added 1.1 percent to 9,545.96 and Seoul’s Kospi rose 0.7 percent to 2,013.29. Sydney’s S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.2 percent to 5,439.60.

Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand also rose.

On Tuesday, Britain’s FTSE 100 and France’s CAC 40 both rose 0.9 percent. Germany’s DAX advanced 0.7 percent.

Shares in BNP Paribas, France’s biggest bank, rose 3.6 percent after it said would be able to pay a nearly $9 billion U.S. fine for violating a ban on handling transactions for clients in Sudan, Cuba and Iran. The United States is trying to block them from participation in the global financial system.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.8 percent to close Tuesday at 16,956.07. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 0.7 percent to 1,973.32.

In energy markets, benchmark U.S. crude for August delivery added 7 cents to $105.41 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract shed 3 cents on Tuesday to close at $105.34.

In currencies, the dollar rose to 101.62 yen from 101.50 yen late Tuesday. The euro slipped to $1.3680 from $1.3682.

In Denpasar, 170 items of cigarettes do not put PHW DENPASAR - The inclusion of health warnings or Pictorial Health Warning (PHW) has been officially effected as of June 24, 2014. The warning is in accordance with the Government Regulation No.109/2012 on the Safekeeping of Ingredients Containing Addictive Substances in Tobacco Product for Health. With the regulation, all products such as cigarettes should include health warnings in the form of images.

To observe closely the implementation in the field, the Agency of Drug and Food Control (BBPOM) of Bali came down to the field by performing an inspection. The Head of BBPOM Bali, Endang Widowati, described the surveillance was carried out on Tuesday (Jun 24). The surveillance targeted importers, distributors and retailers in Denpasar. As a result, of the 197 items found, in fact 170 items had not included the PHW and still used the old warning containing text only.

“Only 24 items have included the PHW,” said Endang.

According to Endang, the items that were not yet putting the PHW had not been given any sanction, where the penalty for manufacturers that did not include the PHW was five-year imprisonment and a fine of IDR 500 million. “For the time be-

ing, they are only given a reprimand, while the items having not included the PHW should be exchanged to the manufacturer,” said Endang.

Inclusion of the PHW itself was issued in the hope of diminishing the number of smokers in Indonesia. The PHW consisted of images regarding the effects of smoking on health. There were five types of images included, namely the image of oral cancer, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis, throat cancer, an image of cigarette being hazardous for children and an image with the words saying that ‘smoking kills.’

Other than the PHW, Endang further added that cigarette pack should include health information in the form of tar and nicotine content.

The BBPOM Bali had socialized the issue in advance before the issuance of the new regulation. (san)

SYDNEY - Australia is emerging as the latest hotspot for casino operators as they look to attract Asia’s high rollers to the gaming tables as well as its pristine beaches and popular centres like the Great Barrier Reef.

With a mining boom slowing, the prospect of thousands of new jobs and billions in tourist dollars has convinced Queensland and New South Wales to back four new casinos, despite fears over their potential environmental and social impacts.

The resorts are at various stages of planning, with Queensland, already a popular destination, the main focus of a charge spearheaded by Australian mogul James Packer and Hong Kong billionaire Tony Fung.

David Wiadrowski, head of Australian Entertainment and Media at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, said Asians culturally liked to gamble and the latest plans were a win-win for state governments.

“For governments, rightly or wrongly, these integrated resorts are an attractive proposition because they create employment opportunities and tax dollars, which they can then put back into the community,” he said.

But the big question was whether there was sufficient demand.

“It is a high-risk strategy, getting the occupancy in the resorts,” he said.

Australia already has more than a dozen casinos, although not on the same scale as the proposed projects.

In May, Fung won a gaming licence, conditional on environmental, planning and gambling approvals being obtained, for his huge Aus$8.15 billion (US$7.53 billion) Aquis resort near Cairns.

It is being touted as the largest investment in tourism infrastructure in Australia’s history, with eight hotels, an exhibition centre, entertainment precincts, a championship golf course and one of the world’s biggest aquariums.

Once open in 2018, it will employ 20,000 people and boost Queensland’s economy by Aus$1.4 billion a year, according to Fung.

At the same time, Chinese-Australian investment concern ASF Consortium was granted a licence for its Aus$7.5 billion Broadwater Marine Project on the state’s Gold Coast under similar conditions.

Separately, Echo Entertainment, which runs the only casino in Brisbane, Packer’s Crown

and a Hong Kong consortium have bid for the right to build another integrated resort in the Queensland capital.

It all comes with Packer, who runs a worldwide gambling empire, planning to open a sixstar hotel and luxury casino complex in a prime location on Sydney Harbour in 2019.

Packer is clear on his target market.

“We believe that Crown Sydney will help attract Asian high net worth travellers to Sydney, in particular from China, creating economic growth, extra taxes and over 1,200 jobs for the people of New South Wales,” he said in outlining his plans.

There is plenty of competition in the lucrative market, led by the former Portuguese colony of Macau which now generates more than six times the gambling revenue of Las Vegas thanks mainly to big-spending Chinese VIPs. Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam are also staking their claims to regional market share, with several mega-resorts in the pipeline.

Newly minted Chinese are also the market for Fung, a member of one of Hong Kong’s bestknown banking families. His ambitious Aquis project expects to attract a million guests a year, three-quarters of them from overseas.

As anticipation against the surge in consumption, Pertamina would prepare additional stock of Premium as much as 15 percent of the normal monthly consumption, or about 515,200 KL of normal consumption at 448,000 KL per month.

In addition to the reliability of supply to subsidized fuel (Premium and Diesel), Pertamina had also increased its sales outlet for special non-subsidized fuels (Pertamax, Pertamax Plus and Pertamina Dex) at petrol stations in the region of MOR V. “It has been noted that from a total of 1,135 petrol stations in the region of MOR V, 647 of which have already been providing non-subsidized fuel products,” he said.

At least four people were injured Tuesday evening in Mandalay, mostly from stones thrown by the mob or from rubber bullets fired by police, said Khin Maung Oo, secretary of the city’s Myanmar Muslim Youth Religious Convention Center.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, has been grappling with sectarian violence since 2012 that has left up to 280 people dead and another 140,000 left homeless, most of them Muslims attacked by extremist Buddhists.

The violence in Mandalay, in central Myanmar, followed rumors that the Muslim owner of a teashop had raped a Buddhist woman, said Khin Maung Oo. Police did not immediately confirm or deny the alleged rape but said they were tipped off that the teashop might be attacked and told the owner to close early.

Authorities deployed hundreds of police after a crowd of more than 300 Buddhists marched to the teashop, singing the national anthem, according to Khin Maung Oo and several residents. Police fired rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowd, which scattered into groups that held cat-andmouse chases with police for several hours.

Rioters threw stones at a mosque, causing minor damage to its exterior and front doors, and others ransacked a few Muslim-owned shops, said Khin Maung Oo. Several cars were set on fire or had windows shattered by stones and bricks.

Myanmar emerged from a half-century of military rule in 2011, but its transition to democracy has been marred by the sectarian violence. Muslims account for about 4 percent of Myanmar’s roughly 60 million people.

JERUSALEM — Hundreds of Palestinians hurled stones at Israeli police who responded with tear gas in clashes that erupted Wednesday following reports that an Arab teen was kidnapped and a body found in a Jerusalem forest.

Police have not determined whether the reported incidents are related or what motive may have been behind them. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged authorities to swiftly investigate the “reprehensible murder” and called on all sides “not to take the law into their own hands.”

Tensions have mounted between Israel and the Palestinians after the bodies of three Israeli teens were found in the West Bank more than two weeks after they went missing.

Israel has accused Hamas of abducting and killing the three teens, and has arrested hundreds of its members across the West Bank. Rocket fire from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has meanwhile intensified, and been met with Israeli air strikes.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police received a report early Wednesday that an Arab teen was “forcibly pulled into a vehicle” in an area of east Jerusalem and that an hour later a body was discovered in a separate part of the city.

He said security was heightened in Jerusalem, with extra units dispatched and the city’s light rail train service cut short to avoid the scene of the violence. Police also closed a key holy site in Jerusalem’s Old City to visitors after rock throwing there.

Israeli officials urged calm as police investigated the incidents, hoping to contain the violence.

“Everything is being examined. There are many possibilities. There is a criminal possibility as well as a political one,” Israel’s public security minister, Yitzhak Aharonovitch, told Israel Radio. “I am telling everyone, let us wait patiently.”

4 dead after cargo plane crashes in Kenya capital Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya — Four people were killed when a cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff at the international airport in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, a police official said Wednesday.

The Fokker 50 aircraft transporting the mild stimulant known as Khat to the Somali capital, Mogadishu, crashed into a residential building after taking off from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport early Wednesday, said Joseph Ngisa, the airport’s head of police investigations.

Preliminary investigations found the plane was flying low after takeoff and might have hit an electrical pole before crashing in the Embakasi area of the city, Ngisa said. No other details were immediately available on the possible cause of the crash.

The Kenya National Disaster Operation Center said on Twitter that all the victims were male, and they included the flight engineer as well the pilot and two crew members.

JAKARTA - US mining giant Newmont said Tuesday it has filed for international arbitration against Jakarta over a controversial mineral ore export ban that has forced it to halt production at its Indonesian mine.

The company’s Indonesian unit said it was seeking a ruling at the Washington-based International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes that would allow it to resume exports.

Southeast Asia’s top economy introduced a ban on the export of some unprocessed minerals, and higher taxes on others that can still be shipped out of the country,

in January.

It is one of a raft of economic policies that critics have dubbed “resource nationalism”, and which are pushed by politicians who argue that Indonesia is losing out by allowing foreign firms easy access to lucrative industries.

Copper concentrate, a partially processed product that is a major export for Newmont and its US

peer Freeport-McMoRan, was exempt from the ban but the companies still faced paying the new, higher taxes on shipments.

But Newmont refused, saying that the levies conflict with its original agreements to operate in Indonesia and it has not exported since the ban came into force.

Last month it ceased production at its huge Batu Hijau copper

and gold mine in central Indonesia after its stores filled up, declared “force majeure” to avoid penalties on missed deliveries, and sent thousands of workers on temporary leave.

In its latest move in the escalating row with the government, the head of Newmont’s Indonesian unit, Martiono Hadianto, announced the company was “left with no option but to seek relief through international arbitration”.

According to the commander, the Indonesian Military and Police are working in tandem to prevent the smuggling of weapons to the Papua region, particularly to areas, which are prone to armed rebel groups.

“We hope that the detector can prevent the smuggling of weapons by civilians as its effects can be very dangerous,” Zebua added.

The commander has inspected the readiness of the soldiers responsible for maintaining security in the upcoming election scheduled on July 9, 2014.

JAKARTA - Indonesia will achieve and even surpass its foreign tourist arrival target at 9.5 million this year, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said.

“What we have achieved in the January-May 2014 period has indicated that the target of 9.3-9.5 million foreign tourist arrivals will be achieved and even exceeded,” the minister said on Tuesday.

She said the increase in foreign tourist arrivals over the last five months this year was beyond the target. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) has revealed that the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia last May had reached 752,363.

So, on the whole, the number of foreign tourists in the last five months (January-May) had reached 3.7 million or up by 9.96 percent compared with that in the same period last year, which was 3.364 million.

“During the first five months of 2014, the increase in foreign tourists had almost reached 10 percent, or above the target of 6-8 percent,” the minister said.

MILAN — Formula One may say goodbye to one of its most historic tracks at Monza, according to boss Bernie Ecclestone. Monza’s current deal was agreed to in 2010 and Ecclestone said he believes it is unlikely to be renewed when it runs out at the end of 2016.

“Its future isn’t good,” Ecclestone said in an interview published by the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday. “I don’t think we’ll do another contract, the old one was a disaster for us from a commercial point of view. After 2016, bye bye...”

Monza, which first hosted an F1 race in 1922, is one of the most famous and beloved tracks on the circuit. Every Italian Grand Prix since 1950 has been held at the track except the 1980 race, which was held at Imola.

“Ecclestone’s comments on the Monza Grand Prix are worrying,” said Antonio Rossi of the Department of Sport and Youth Policy in the Lombardy Region. “As regional councilor I ask for the government to help us protect the Italian Grand Prix, which has played an important part in the history of Formula One and which, above all, plays an important economic role and brings jobs to the region.”

If Monza is dropped by F1, the Italian Grand Prix could be held at Mugello, a proposal that has been mooted by Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo. Ferrari owns the circuit.

Italy could also lose its race altogether due to the sport’s dwindling fan base in the country following numerous disappointing seasons for Ferrari.

“TV audiences are lower in Italy than elsewhere,” Ecclestone said. “If Ferrari starts placing first or second in qualifying and races ... the audiences would increase everywhere. Ferrari is a worldwide passion.”

LONDON - Rafael Nadal’s days of living dangerously at Wimbledon were finally ended on Tuesday by a 144th-ranked teenage tyro who came armed with an inexhaustible supply of aces and wonder-shots.

For the fourth match in a row at this year’s grasscourt championships, the Spaniard surrendered the first set. However, unlike Martin Klizan, Lukas Rosol and Mikhail Kukushkin, 19-year-old Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios proved to be no pushover and Nadal ran out of Wimbledon lives as he went down fighting in a 7-6(5) 5-7 7-6(5) 6-3 fourth-round defeat.

Kyrgios fired down 37 aces and played a fearless brand of tennis to topple the world number one following two hours 58 minutes of exhilarating action. It was the first time since 1992 a man ranked outside the top 100 had beaten a world number one. “It hasn’t sunk in at all what just played out there.

I played some extraordinary tennis,” said Kyrgios who is enjoying a remarkable run at these championships having saved nine match points in his third-round win over Richard Gasquet.

“You’ve got to believe that you can win the match from the start and I definitely thought that. I am playing some unbelievable tennis on the grass,” he told reporters.

“My mind’s buzzing ... I’m just going to enjoy this.” Kyrgios certainly had the crowd buzzing after causing the biggest shock of this year’s men’s tournament by bringing the 2008 and 2010 champion to his knees.

He opened with an ace, won the first set with an ace and sealed victory with an ace. While Nadal might have been fed up with the number of thunderbolts that whistled past his ears, those lucky to watch the Australian come of age will know that he is not simply an ace machine.

JAW-DROPPING SIZZLERS

After dropping only four points on serve in the first set, Kyrgios had 15,000 fans leaping to their feet as he followed up jaw-dropping crosscourt sizzlers with breathtaking down-the-line winners. As if that was not enough, he irked Nadal by producing perhaps the shot of the tournament. Facing the net near the baseline, he whipped his racket around his back and nonchalantly flicked a shot between his legs that flew over the net for an audacious winner.

The teenager loved it, the crowd loved it, Nadal hated it. The 14times grand slam champion’s day was unravelling fast and despite winning the second set he was left gasping as Kyrgios kept on believ-

ing that he could make his debut outing on Wimbledon’s Centre Court a day to remember.

A forehand error gave Kyrgios a break for a 3-1 lead in the fourth set and from then on the Spaniard was left chasing shadows and at 7.09pm local time, his hopes of a third Wimbledon crown had been snuffed out. While one champion was exiting stage left, John McEnroe was hailing the arrival of a man he thinks can go all the way.

“We’ve been waiting for this for a while. We keep saying ‘who is the next guy?’, and I think we’ve found that guy right now,” said the former three-times champion.

“That was absolutely stunning, to see what he did to the world number one today. How did he keep that up? He absolutely believed that he was going to win that match. “He’s acting to me like he could win this tournament. The last guy I saw like this was Boris Becker - young teenager, no fear whatsoever,” added the American great. Those were the same traits Nadal showed the world in 2005 when he won the first of his record nine French Open trophies as a 19-year-old.

Almost a decade later the passion still runs deep in the Mallorcan. “I fought until the very end,” said Nadal whose last three Wimbledons have ended in the second, first and fourth round.

After Belgium missed countless chances during the 90 minutes of regulation time in the second-round match against the United States on Tuesday, the powerful striker came off the bench and soon set up the opening goal for Kevin De Bruyne. As the U.S. pressed for an equalizer, De Bruyne swiftly returned the favor to Lukaku, who made it 2-0.

Despite scoring key goals in World Cup qualifying, Lukaku had a disappointing start in the group matches and was dropped from the starting lineup.

“The media tried to take Romelu down after the first round, but I was convinced that he would still be able to make the difference at this World Cup,” Belgian coach Marc Wilmots said after his team secured a spot in the quarterfinals.

Wilmots was the one who went looking for an alternative to Lukaku.

He brought in the 19-year-old Divock Origi, who scored the winner against Russia and provided the shot which

allowed Jan Vertonghen to tap in the winner against South Korea.

Origi started against the United States, but missed several scoring chances before he was replaced by Lukaku.

SAO PAULO - Argentina needed an extra-time goal to overcome Switzerland in a nailbiting World Cup match on Tuesday but coach Alejandro Sabella congratulated his team on their tactical discipline and declared the win “well-deserved.”

At a pub in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city, it got so packed people were sitting on the floor to watch the match. They shouted every time U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard made a spectacular save — which he did 16 times.

Many of the American faithful in Sao Paulo were shouting the U.S. chant of “I believe that we will win” throughout the game. Some added emphatically “We love you!” for their team. But in the end, most acknowledged that Belgium played a much better game, saying the U.S. waited too long to go on the attack.

“Belgium just played much better.

They deserve it,” said Nick Venditti, a 26-year-old from New York. “I am still happy we made it out of the ‘group of death.’ That wasn’t easy.” He added, hopefully: “In the next four years, we will be so much better.”

TERESOPOLIS, Brazil — Brazil has been closing its training sessions to fans, but some of the country’s top celebrities have had no problem getting close to the players.

Two soap opera stars were among those allowed to watch the team practice Tuesday. Juliana Paes and Carolina Dieckman even took their kids to the training camp in Teresopolis, a mountain city about an hour from Rio de Janeiro. Both posted photos of their afternoon escapade on social media.

Fans with links to the team’s sponsors are also allowed at the training camp, which has an area reserved for the VIPs just outside one of the fields where Brazil practices.

Regular fans are kept outside the gates of the Granja Comary club, often yelling and asking coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to let them in. Hundreds of people show up every day to try to get near the players.

Brazil will stay at the training camp at least until Wednesday, when it travels to the northeastern city of Fortaleza for Friday’s match against Colombia in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

At a pub in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city, it got so packed people were sitting on the floor to watch the match. They shouted every time U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard made a spectacular save — which he did 16 times.

Many of the American faithful in Sao Paulo were shouting the U.S. chant of “I believe that we will win” throughout the game. Some added emphatically “We love you!” for their team. But in the end, most acknowledged that Belgium played a much better game, saying the U.S. waited too long to go on the attack.

“Belgium just played much better.

They deserve it,” said Nick Venditti, a 26-year-old from New York. “I am still happy we made it out of the ‘group of death.’ That wasn’t easy.” He added, hopefully: “In the next four years, we will be so much better.”

TERESOPOLIS, Brazil — Brazil has been closing its training sessions to fans, but some of the country’s top celebrities have had no problem getting close to the players.

Two soap opera stars were among those allowed to watch the team practice Tuesday. Juliana Paes and Carolina Dieckman even took their kids to the training camp in Teresopolis, a mountain city about an hour from Rio de Janeiro. Both posted photos of their afternoon escapade on social media.

Fans with links to the team’s sponsors are also allowed at the training camp, which has an area reserved for the VIPs just outside one of the fields where Brazil practices.

Regular fans are kept outside the gates of the Granja Comary club, often yelling and asking coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to let them in. Hundreds of people show up every day to try to get near the players.

Brazil will stay at the training camp at least until Wednesday, when it travels to the northeastern city of Fortaleza for Friday’s match against Colombia in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

MILAN — Formula One may say goodbye to one of its most historic tracks at Monza, according to boss Bernie Ecclestone. Monza’s current deal was agreed to in 2010 and Ecclestone said he believes it is unlikely to be renewed when it runs out at the end of 2016.

“Its future isn’t good,” Ecclestone said in an interview published by the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday. “I don’t think we’ll do another contract, the old one was a disaster for us from a commercial point of view. After 2016, bye bye...”

Monza, which first hosted an F1 race in 1922, is one of the most famous and beloved tracks on the circuit. Every Italian Grand Prix since 1950 has been held at the track except the 1980 race, which was held at Imola.

“Ecclestone’s comments on the Monza Grand Prix are worrying,” said Antonio Rossi of the Department of Sport and Youth Policy in the Lombardy Region. “As regional councilor I ask for the government to help us protect the Italian Grand Prix, which has played an important part in the history of Formula One and which, above all, plays an important economic role and brings jobs to the region.”

If Monza is dropped by F1, the Italian Grand Prix could be held at Mugello, a proposal that has been mooted by Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo. Ferrari owns the circuit.

Italy could also lose its race altogether due to the sport’s dwindling fan base in the country following numerous disappointing seasons for Ferrari.

“TV audiences are lower in Italy than elsewhere,” Ecclestone said. “If Ferrari starts placing first or second in qualifying and races ... the audiences would increase everywhere. Ferrari is a worldwide passion.”

LONDON - Rafael Nadal’s days of living dangerously at Wimbledon were finally ended on Tuesday by a 144th-ranked teenage tyro who came armed with an inexhaustible supply of aces and wonder-shots.

For the fourth match in a row at this year’s grasscourt championships, the Spaniard surrendered the first set. However, unlike Martin Klizan, Lukas Rosol and Mikhail Kukushkin, 19-year-old Australian wildcard Nick Kyrgios proved to be no pushover and Nadal ran out of Wimbledon lives as he went down fighting in a 7-6(5) 5-7 7-6(5) 6-3 fourth-round defeat.

Kyrgios fired down 37 aces and played a fearless brand of tennis to topple the world number one following two hours 58 minutes of exhilarating action. It was the first time since 1992 a man ranked outside the top 100 had beaten a world number one. “It hasn’t sunk in at all what just played out there.

I played some extraordinary tennis,” said Kyrgios who is enjoying a remarkable run at these championships having saved nine match points in his third-round win over Richard Gasquet.

“You’ve got to believe that you can win the match from the start and I definitely thought that. I am playing some unbelievable tennis on the grass,” he told reporters.

“My mind’s buzzing ... I’m just going to enjoy this.” Kyrgios certainly had the crowd buzzing after causing the biggest shock of this year’s men’s tournament by bringing the 2008 and 2010 champion to his knees.

He opened with an ace, won the first set with an ace and sealed victory with an ace. While Nadal might have been fed up with the number of thunderbolts that whistled past his ears, those lucky to watch the Australian come of age will know that he is not simply an ace machine.

JAW-DROPPING SIZZLERS

After dropping only four points on serve in the first set, Kyrgios had 15,000 fans leaping to their feet as he followed up jaw-dropping crosscourt sizzlers with breathtaking down-the-line winners. As if that was not enough, he irked Nadal by producing perhaps the shot of the tournament. Facing the net near the baseline, he whipped his racket around his back and nonchalantly flicked a shot between his legs that flew over the net for an audacious winner.

The teenager loved it, the crowd loved it, Nadal hated it. The 14times grand slam champion’s day was unravelling fast and despite winning the second set he was left gasping as Kyrgios kept on believ-

ing that he could make his debut outing on Wimbledon’s Centre Court a day to remember.

A forehand error gave Kyrgios a break for a 3-1 lead in the fourth set and from then on the Spaniard was left chasing shadows and at 7.09pm local time, his hopes of a third Wimbledon crown had been snuffed out. While one champion was exiting stage left, John McEnroe was hailing the arrival of a man he thinks can go all the way.

“We’ve been waiting for this for a while. We keep saying ‘who is the next guy?’, and I think we’ve found that guy right now,” said the former three-times champion.

“That was absolutely stunning, to see what he did to the world number one today. How did he keep that up? He absolutely believed that he was going to win that match. “He’s acting to me like he could win this tournament. The last guy I saw like this was Boris Becker - young teenager, no fear whatsoever,” added the American great. Those were the same traits Nadal showed the world in 2005 when he won the first of his record nine French Open trophies as a 19-year-old.

Almost a decade later the passion still runs deep in the Mallorcan. “I fought until the very end,” said Nadal whose last three Wimbledons have ended in the second, first and fourth round.

YANGON, Myanmar — Police fired warning shots to stop a Buddhist mob that damaged a mosque and tried to set fire to several Muslim-owned shops in Myanmar’s second-largest city, authorities said Wednesday.

At least four people were injured Tuesday evening in Mandalay, mostly from stones thrown by the mob or from rubber bullets fired by police, said Khin Maung Oo, secretary of the city’s Myanmar Muslim Youth Religious Convention Center.

Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, has been grappling with sectarian violence since 2012 that has left up to 280 people dead and another 140,000 left homeless, most of them Muslims attacked by extremist Buddhists.

The violence in Mandalay, in central Myanmar, followed rumors that the Muslim owner of a teashop had raped a Buddhist woman, said Khin Maung Oo. Police did not immediately confirm or deny the alleged rape but said they were tipped off that the teashop might be attacked and told the owner to close early.

Authorities deployed hundreds of police after a crowd of more than 300 Buddhists marched to the teashop, singing the national anthem, according to Khin Maung Oo and several residents. Police fired rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowd, which scattered into groups that held cat-andmouse chases with police for several hours.

Rioters threw stones at a mosque, causing minor damage to its exterior and front doors, and others ransacked a few Muslim-owned shops, said Khin Maung Oo. Several cars were set on fire or had windows shattered by stones and bricks.

Myanmar emerged from a half-century of military rule in 2011, but its transition to democracy has been marred by the sectarian violence. Muslims account for about 4 percent of Myanmar’s roughly 60 million people.

JERUSALEM — Hundreds of Palestinians hurled stones at Israeli police who responded with tear gas in clashes that erupted Wednesday following reports that an Arab teen was kidnapped and a body found in a Jerusalem forest.

Police have not determined whether the reported incidents are related or what motive may have been behind them. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged authorities to swiftly investigate the “reprehensible murder” and called on all sides “not to take the law into their own hands.”

Tensions have mounted between Israel and the Palestinians after the bodies of three Israeli teens were found in the West Bank more than two weeks after they went missing.

Israel has accused Hamas of abducting and killing the three teens, and has arrested hundreds of its members across the West Bank. Rocket fire from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has meanwhile intensified, and been met with Israeli air strikes.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police received a report early Wednesday that an Arab teen was “forcibly pulled into a vehicle” in an area of east Jerusalem and that an hour later a body was discovered in a separate part of the city.

He said security was heightened in Jerusalem, with extra units dispatched and the city’s light rail train service cut short to avoid the scene of the violence. Police also closed a key holy site in Jerusalem’s Old City to visitors after rock throwing there.

Israeli officials urged calm as police investigated the incidents, hoping to contain the violence.

“Everything is being examined. There are many possibilities. There is a criminal possibility as well as a political one,” Israel’s public security minister, Yitzhak Aharonovitch, told Israel Radio. “I am telling everyone, let us wait patiently.”

4 dead after cargo plane crashes in Kenya capital Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya — Four people were killed when a cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff at the international airport in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, a police official said Wednesday.

The Fokker 50 aircraft transporting the mild stimulant known as Khat to the Somali capital, Mogadishu, crashed into a residential building after taking off from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport early Wednesday, said Joseph Ngisa, the airport’s head of police investigations.

Preliminary investigations found the plane was flying low after takeoff and might have hit an electrical pole before crashing in the Embakasi area of the city, Ngisa said. No other details were immediately available on the possible cause of the crash.

The Kenya National Disaster Operation Center said on Twitter that all the victims were male, and they included the flight engineer as well the pilot and two crew members.

JAKARTA - US mining giant Newmont said Tuesday it has filed for international arbitration against Jakarta over a controversial mineral ore export ban that has forced it to halt production at its Indonesian mine.

The company’s Indonesian unit said it was seeking a ruling at the Washington-based International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes that would allow it to resume exports.

Southeast Asia’s top economy introduced a ban on the export of some unprocessed minerals, and higher taxes on others that can still be shipped out of the country,

in January.

It is one of a raft of economic policies that critics have dubbed “resource nationalism”, and which are pushed by politicians who argue that Indonesia is losing out by allowing foreign firms easy access to lucrative industries.

Copper concentrate, a partially processed product that is a major export for Newmont and its US

peer Freeport-McMoRan, was exempt from the ban but the companies still faced paying the new, higher taxes on shipments.

But Newmont refused, saying that the levies conflict with its original agreements to operate in Indonesia and it has not exported since the ban came into force.

Last month it ceased production at its huge Batu Hijau copper

and gold mine in central Indonesia after its stores filled up, declared “force majeure” to avoid penalties on missed deliveries, and sent thousands of workers on temporary leave.

In its latest move in the escalating row with the government, the head of Newmont’s Indonesian unit, Martiono Hadianto, announced the company was “left with no option but to seek relief through international arbitration”.

“The detector will assist in the inspection of weapons and ammuni-

According to the commander, the Indonesian Military and Police are working in tandem to prevent the smuggling of weapons to the Papua region, particularly to areas, which are prone to armed rebel groups.

“We hope that the detector can prevent the smuggling of weapons by civilians as its effects can be very dangerous,” Zebua added.

The commander has inspected the readiness of the soldiers responsible for maintaining security in the upcoming election scheduled on July 9, 2014.

JAKARTA - Indonesia will achieve and even surpass its foreign tourist arrival target at 9.5 million this year, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said.

“What we have achieved in the January-May 2014 period has indicated that the target of 9.3-9.5 million foreign tourist arrivals will be achieved and even exceeded,” the minister said on Tuesday.

She said the increase in foreign tourist arrivals over the last five months this year was beyond the target. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) has revealed that the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia last May had reached 752,363.

So, on the whole, the number of foreign tourists in the last five months (January-May) had reached 3.7 million or up by 9.96 percent compared with that in the same period last year, which was 3.364 million.

“During the first five months of 2014, the increase in foreign tourists had almost reached 10 percent, or above the target of 6-8 percent,” the minister said.

BEIJING — Asian stocks were mostly higher Wednesday on improved U.S. and Chinese economic activity. The regional heavyweight, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225, gained 0.5 percent to 15,406.03 points. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 1 percent to 23,409.33 and Taipei, Seoul and Sydney also gained. China’s benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.2 percent at 2,046.25.

Traders were encouraged by surveys showing China’s manufacturing activity improved in June for the first time in six months. That came on top of the government’s decision to expand credit by allowing banks to lend more relative to the size of their deposits.

Both developments “bode well for growth,” said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

In the United States, the Institute for Supply Management said manufacturing activity grew in June, though at a slower pace than in May. “Markets saw this as a positive,” said CMC Markets in a report.

Taiwan’s Taiex added 1.1 percent to 9,545.96 and Seoul’s Kospi rose 0.7 percent to 2,013.29. Sydney’s S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.2 percent to 5,439.60.

Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand also rose.

On Tuesday, Britain’s FTSE 100 and France’s CAC 40 both rose 0.9 percent. Germany’s DAX advanced 0.7 percent.

Shares in BNP Paribas, France’s biggest bank, rose 3.6 percent after it said would be able to pay a nearly $9 billion U.S. fine for violating a ban on handling transactions for clients in Sudan, Cuba and Iran. In Denpasar, 170 items of cigarettes do not put PHW DENPASAR - The inclusion of health warnings or Pictorial Health Warning (PHW) has been officially effected as of June 24, 2014. The warning is in accordance with the Government Regulation No.109/2012 on the Safekeeping of Ingredients Containing Addictive Substances in Tobacco Product for Health. With the regulation, all products such as cigarettes should include health warnings in the form of images.

To observe closely the implementation in the field, the Agency of Drug and Food Control (BBPOM) of Bali came down to the field by performing an inspection. The Head of BBPOM Bali, Endang Widowati, described the surveillance was carried out on Tuesday (Jun 24). The surveillance targeted importers, distributors and retailers in Denpasar. As a result, of the 197 items found, in fact 170 items had not included the PHW and still used the old warning containing text only.

“Only 24 items have included the PHW,” said Endang.

According to Endang, the items that were not yet putting the PHW had not been given any sanction, where the penalty for manufacturers that did not include the PHW was five-year imprisonment and a fine of IDR 500 million. “For the time be-

ing, they are only given a reprimand, while the items having not included the PHW should be exchanged to the manufacturer,” said Endang.

Inclusion of the PHW itself was issued in the hope of diminishing the number of smokers in Indonesia. The PHW consisted of images regarding the effects of smoking on health. There were five types of images included, namely the image of oral cancer, lung cancer and chronic bronchitis, throat cancer, an image of cigarette being hazardous for children and an image with the words saying that ‘smoking kills.’

Other than the PHW, Endang further added that cigarette pack should include health information in the form of tar and nicotine content.

SYDNEY - Australia is emerging as the latest hotspot for casino operators as they look to attract Asia’s high rollers to the gaming tables as well as its pristine beaches and popular centres like the Great Barrier Reef.

With a mining boom slowing, the prospect of thousands of new jobs and billions in tourist dollars has convinced Queensland and New South Wales to back four new casinos, despite fears over their potential environmental and social impacts.

The resorts are at various stages of planning, with Queensland, already a popular destination, the main focus of a charge spearheaded by Australian mogul James Packer and Hong Kong billionaire Tony Fung.

David Wiadrowski, head of Australian Entertainment and Media at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, said Asians culturally liked to gamble and the latest plans were a win-win for state governments.

“For governments, rightly or wrongly, these integrated resorts are an attractive proposition because they create employment opportunities and tax dollars, which they can then put back into the community,” he said.

But the big question was whether there was sufficient demand.

“It is a high-risk strategy, getting the occupancy in the resorts,” he said.

Australia already has more than a dozen casinos, although not on the same scale as the proposed projects.

In May, Fung won a gaming licence, conditional on environmental, planning and gambling approvals being obtained, for his huge Aus$8.15 billion (US$7.53 billion) Aquis resort near Cairns.

It is being touted as the largest investment in tourism infrastructure in Australia’s history, with eight hotels, an exhibition centre, entertainment precincts, a championship golf course and one of the world’s biggest aquariums.

Once open in 2018, it will employ 20,000 people and boost Queensland’s economy by Aus$1.4 billion a year, according to Fung.

At the same time, Chinese-Australian investment concern ASF Consortium was granted a licence for its Aus$7.5 billion Broadwater Marine Project on the state’s Gold Coast under similar conditions.

Separately, Echo Entertainment, which runs the only casino in Brisbane, Packer’s Crown

and a Hong Kong consortium have bid for the right to build another integrated resort in the Queensland capital.

It all comes with Packer, who runs a worldwide gambling empire, planning to open a sixstar hotel and luxury casino complex in a prime location on Sydney Harbour in 2019.

Packer is clear on his target market.

“We believe that Crown Sydney will help attract Asian high net worth travellers to Sydney, in particular from China, creating economic growth, extra taxes and over 1,200 jobs for the people of New South Wales,” he said in outlining his plans.

There is plenty of competition in the lucrative market, led by the former Portuguese colony of Macau which now generates more than six times the gambling revenue of Las Vegas thanks mainly to big-spending Chinese VIPs. Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam are also staking their claims to regional market share, with several mega-resorts in the pipeline.

Newly minted Chinese are also the market for Fung, a member of one of Hong Kong’s bestknown banking families. His ambitious Aquis project expects to attract a million guests a year, three-quarters of them from overseas.

As anticipation against the surge in consumption, Pertamina would prepare additional stock of Premium as much as 15 percent of the normal monthly consumption, or about 515,200 KL of normal consumption at 448,000 KL per month.

In addition to the reliability of supply to subsidized fuel (Premium and Diesel), Pertamina had also increased its sales outlet for special non-subsidized fuels (Pertamax, Pertamax Plus and Pertamina Dex) at petrol stations in the region of MOR V. “It has been noted that from a total of 1,135 petrol stations in the region of MOR V, 647 of which have already been providing non-subsidized fuel products,” he said.

SEMARAPURA - Following the reveal of the mutilation case, a number of food stalls complained. It was triggered by the rumors if the flesh of the mutilation victim was sold to a number of food stalls, especially to satay vendors. Moreover, the victim’s flesh has not been found. Thus, many people of Klungkung are influenced by the rumor. As a result, the income of satay vendors in the past weeks drops to 80 percent.

Such condition was recognized by one of the families of mutton satay traders, Hajj Karto, when met at his home at Kampung Jawa, Semarapura Klod Kangin, Klungkung, Tuesday (Jul 1). Karto said that his food stall was under Inti supermarket. The food stall had been managed by his sister Sapiah since more than 50 years ago.

However, after the mutilation case was revealed on Monday (Jun 23), a rumor spread if the suspect Fikri had sold the flesh of mutilation victim Diana Sari aka Nana, 22, to number of traders of mutton satay and meatballs at some areas in Klungkung and Gianyar. Actually, police or the media never published such information. “At first, I heard the rumor circulating at Galiran Market. Actually, I do not really understand why the flesh was rumored to have been sold to us. Probably, they thought we could not distinguish human flesh from mutton,” said Karto.

Although the source of information was unclear, many people of Klungkung were influenced by the rumors. As a result, the traders of chicken and mutton satay were deserted. Karto said he habitually slaughtered eight to nine goats each day. However, in the past week, the needs for mutton at his sister’s food stall slumped. “Now, we can only spend two heads each day, one in the

morning and another in the afternoon. Previously, many people coming, but now they even do not dare to pass,” he complained.

He also denied if his food stall was once used by police to perform reconstruction and fitted with police lines. Even, a number of residents accused him of buying the flesh of Nana from the suspect Fikri. “If I am getting involved in this case, why am I never summoned by police? What is the evidence? I always try to be honest with what I sell to customers so that my food stall can get crowded,” he said.

As a result of this situation, his party was also confused to hire eight employees. He intended to lay off six employees because the situation kept getting deserted.

However, the effort was not yet done. He claimed to be sorry to see if his employees had to stop working. Moreover, most of them had got married. For a butcher, he paid at IDR 150,000 per day.

Meanwhile, the employees at food stall were paid at IDR 80,000 to IDR 90,000 per day. Currently, he still held on with the existing situation. However, he began to reduce the supply of mutton brought in from Lumajang, East Java, Karangasem and Singaraja. In the past, when it was still crowded, he claimed to bring in 20 heads to 25 heads of goat. “Now, I stop the entire

supply for a while,” he said. He hoped that police could clarify the rumor. Otherwise, the rumor would prolong and he worried that his business

could go bankrupt.

Meanwhile, being frustrated with this issue, a number of satay traders in Klungkung finally complained to Klungkung Police headquarters, Tuesday. It was admitted by the Chief of Klungkung Police Criminal Investigation Unit, I Nyoman Wirajaya.

Ultimately, the suspect Fikri in the room of Wirajaya asserted that after mutilating Nana, the flesh was not sold anywhere but wrapped in black plastic bags. After that, the flesh was disposed with other mutilated body parts to 13 crime scenes in Klungkung and Karangasem. Then, why was the victim’s flesh not found? Wirajaya added the flesh might have been eaten by animal nearby like a lizard. Clearly, the results of the investigation indicated if the victim’s flesh was not sold anywhere.

“I was even afraid when disposing it.

Such a rumor is not correct. No portions of the flesh were sold. I’ve disposed them all,” said Fikri. Every day, he recognized to do activities and helped install the structure of food stall under the Inti supermarket. The location was quite close to the food stall owned by Hajj Karto. TABANAN - People were encouraged to remain cautious in choosing snacks because the snacks sold are not always safe to consume.

Evidently, in the inspection held by the Agency of Drug and Food Control (BBPOM) Denpasar in collaboration with the Tabanan Health Agency and Tabanan Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency was found at least two types of snacks containing Rhodamine B (textile dye). One of the snacks was begina commonly used to fill in offerings. Though it was not consumed by residents, it remained hazardous. After being used for offerings, the snack is primarily given to livestock such as chickens and pigs.

“If the livestock were slaughtered and then consumed, then those chemicals will be going into our body because they are not biodegradable,” explained the Certification Section Head of the BBPOM Denpasar, Wayan Bagiarta, accompanied by the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Suratmika, after the inspection at Dauh Pala Market, Dauh Peken village, Tabanan, Monday (Jul 2).

Further he said that of the 14 samples of the type of food examined directly by means of test kit, it was found that two samples were positive to contain hazardous ingredients of Rhodamine B. He called on people not to utilize textile dyes in food because consuming it could cause cancer.

“Especially the begina snack should not be given to pigs, but thrown away after being used in offerings,” he explained.

In addition to foods containing textile dyes, the officers also found a number of expired food products, such as bread flour, seasonings and sauces. The officers also found a traditional herbal drink without circulation permit. Siti, a butcher and grocery seller admitted that she did not know if any of the products on sale had expired. “I just knew it today because I have never made double-check related to the expiration.

Now, I am going to ask for product replacement so that I do not lose,” she explained.

In line with Siti, another grocery seller, Ketut Narsa, equally did not think if a number of goods offered had been expired. He also claimed to never recheck the goods purchased, even to check their distribution permit.

Responding to the findings, Wayan Bagiarta also directly provided guidance and insight to a number of traders encountered. According to him, to avoid any expired goods, the traders should be more careful when purchasing a product to be sold. “And the FIFO (first in first out) system must be applied where the goods purchased first must be sold first,” he said.

Other than inspecting hazardous ingredients and expired food and drink, he also advised the Chief of Dauh Pala Market to always maintain the sanitation. According to him, although the products on sale had good quality, it would remain unsafe and unhealthy if condition of the market did not support. SAN JOSE LAS FLORES — The mother of a Guatemalan boy whose body was found in the desert about a mile from Texas’ southern border said Tuesday she begged him not to make the dangerous journey from their modest cinder block- and sheet-metal home high in the northern Cuchumatanes mountains. But Cipriana Juarez Diaz, ailing and bedridden, said her son Gilberto told her he wanted to earn money to help her.

“I told him not to go but he wanted to help me get rid of my illness,” Juarez Diaz, who has epilepsy, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. She said she draped him with a white rosary as he left. “He was a good son,” she said. “I just hope God gives me the strength to bear seeing his body when they bring him to me.”

Gilberto Francisco Ramos Juarez was found with the rosary still around his neck and a brother’s Chicago phone number scribbled on the inside of his belt buckle about two weeks ago. He was alone in brush less than a mile from the nearest U.S. home, a South Texas sheriff said Monday. He apparently got lost on his way north and likely died from the elements.

An autopsy did not find signs of trauma. His birth certificate says he was 11 years old. But his father, Francisco Ramos Diaz, said Tuesday that the boy was really 15.

Ramos Diaz said Gilberto’s birth certificate carried the birth date of his younger brother because it took the family several years to register him. Because the parents couldn’t remember the exact date of Gilberto’s birth, they gave the same date for both young sons, who became listed as twins.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong police arrested more than 500 people who refused to leave a street in the city’s financial district Wednesday, a day after tens of thousands of people joined a massive march to demand democracy that’s free from China’s interference. The march has become an annual affair held on the anniversary of the day China took over Hong Kong from Britain on June 1, 1997 with the promise to give the city a high degree of autonomy for 50 years. But there is growing unease among its residents — especially the youth — that the Western-style civil liberties they’ve know all their lives are being eroded as Beijing has increasingly tried to impose its authority over the freewheeling capitalist enclave.

The fears are only going to be heightened following the pre-dawn crackdown by the Hong Kong police, who normally do not have an antagonistic relationship with the people, unlike the security forces in mainland China.

Police said 511 people were arrested for unlawful assembly in the Central business district and preventing police from carrying out their duties. After warnings failed to dislodge them, the police moved in to remove the protesters, who lay down on the street with arms locked, taking them away one by one. The protesters had vowed to stay until 8 a.m., just before the height of rush hour begins, but the police started moving in to evict them at about 3 a.m.

Some left willingly but others were forcibly removed, taken away by officers on both arms or carried away off the ground. One officer stood behind a protester and put an

arm around the man’s neck as he and other officers tried to pull his hands free, knocking off the eyeglasses of the demonstrator he was clinging to.

Those arrested were mostly students who had decided to occupy Chater Road after taking part in Tuesday’s rally, which police said attracted 98,000 people at its peak. Organizers said 510,000 people turned out, the highest estimates in a decade. Hong Kong researchers put the number at between 154,000 and 172,000. Whatever the numbers, the march and the vehemence of opposition is certain to raise the alarm in Beijing, which tried to keep the news away from people in mainland China.

The Chinese media predictably did not report it, and comments about the protests were deleted from microblogs and other social media.

Some users posted comments saying friends’ accounts were blocked after they discussed the protests. A

Hong Kong protester, Kennie Chan, lamented that Beijing was less restrained now in exerting its influence over Hong Kong.

“In the past, it seemed like they were doing it step by step, but now, it’s obvious that they cannot stand Hong Kong people. We are not obedient anymore, and are resisting more and more,” said the 30-yearold, who works as a stage manager.

China’s Communist leaders have pledged to allow Hong Kong residents to vote for the leader by 2017.

However, they’ve rejected calls to allow the public to name candidates, insisting instead that they be vetted by a Beijing-friendly committee like the one that has hand-picked all leaders since the handover.

Also, three weeks ago, the Chinese government released a so-called white paper that said Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy is not inherent but is authorized by the central government in Beijing.

U.S. agency taps medical centers to investigate rare diseases Reuters

CHICAGO - The U.S. government’s leading health research agency said on Tuesday it has selected six U.S. academic medical centers to help discover the cause of undiagnosed diseases using advanced diagnostic tools, including gene sequencing.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) said the six centers will expand the work of a pilot program at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, that for the past six years has evaluated hundreds of patients and provided many diagnoses, often using genomic approaches, for rare conditions.

Together, the centers will form the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases

Network, funded by a four-year, $43 million grant from the NIH Common Fund.

Dr Eric Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the NIH, said in a telephone briefing the sites will focus on “very rare” diseases, those which in some cases affect only 50 people in the world.

The academic centers selected

to participate include Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; Harvard University’s three teaching hospitals: Boston Children’s, Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General; Duke University in Durham, North Carolina; Stanford University in Stanford, California; University of California, Los Angeles; and Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Green said the centers will use newly developed methods for genome sequencing, along with clinical evaluations, to decipher the causes of rare, undiagnosed conditions.

Undiagnosed diseases are conditions that even skilled physicians cannot diagnose despite extensive testing. Although each disease is considered rare, as many as 30 million Americans have a rare disease, which collectively affects about 1 in 10 Americans.

Insurance coverage of genomic testing to discover the cause of rare disease has become a growing issue at some academic medical centers, including Baylor, that

have been using the technology to help doctors diagnose rare disease.

The NIH said that while each site may have different approaches for handling health insurance coverage, no patient will be turned away from participating based on lack of insurance.

Researchers in the program will share genomic data from the patients enrolled in the centers in multiple public databases, expanding the knowledge of genes that can cause rare disease, which insurance companies have cited as a barrier to coverage.

Harvard University will serve as the coordinating site for the network.

WASHINGTON - Some childhood vaccines are linked to serious side effects, but they are quite rare and do not include autism, food allergies or cancer, said a review of scientific literature Tuesday.

A host of vaccines commonly given to children under age six were the focus of the systematic review of rigorously conducted studies, published in the peerreviewed US journal Pediatrics.

The report seeks to address a rising trend of vaccine hesitancy among parents in the United States and Europe, which has led to a resurgence of measles and whooping cough in some parts of the world.

“We found that serious adverse events that are linked to vaccines are really rare, and that when they do occur they are often not necessarily severe,” said study co-author Courtney Gidengil, a pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School.

“We think this adds to the body of evidence that the benefits really do seem to clearly outweigh the low risk of serious side effects from vaccines,” she told AFP. The study expands on a 2011 report by the Institute of Medicine that also pointed to some side effects linked to vaccines but found “few health problems are caused by or clearly associated with vaccines.”

The Pediatrics report includes several vaccines that were not studied by the IOM, including those

against hepatitis A, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), polio, rotavirus and the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

Side effects

Side effects of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and pneumococcal vaccines included the potential for fever and seizures.

The MMR and hepatitis A vaccines were also linked to a side effect called purpura, when small blood vessels leak under the skin.

There was some evidence that immune-deficient children given the varicella vaccine against chicken pox could develop infections or have an allergic reaction.

The rotavirus vaccines, RotaTeq and Rotarix, were associated with a risk of intussusception, a condition in which one part of the intestine slides into another part.

However, the risk of this condition was rare, amounting to between 1-5 in 100,000, the researchers said.

“Clinicians who immunize children regularly may have encountered these adverse events in their practices, particularly seizures associated with fever,” said an accompanying editorial by Carrie Byington, vice chair for research in the pediatrics department at the University of Utah.

“Fortunately, the adverse events identified by the authors were rare and in most cases would be expected to resolve completely after the acute event.”

No fatalities were found in the research, which spanned from 2010

MANGUPURA - The Indonesian government is now allowing the elderly foreign travelers to longer enjoy the natural beauty of Indonesia, including Bali. Such a policy was stipulated in Presidential Decree No.31/1998 on the ease for the elderly foreign travelers.

The Head of Special Immigration Office of Class I at Ngurah Rai, Cucu Koswali, stated the policy of Indonesian government for the elderly travelers who wanted to stay longer in Indonesia was up to 1 year. They could extend their residence provided that they had a sponsor or guarantor.

“Without a guarantee, their residence permit cannot be extended and they must go home. However, if they have a guarantor, it may be extended for five times in succession,” said Cucu Koswali amidst the socialization recently.

According to him, the extension of the length of stay for the elderly foreign travelers was an old policy, but it contained some new changes required to be re-socialized. The policy was to accommodate the elderly travelers who wanted to enjoy their longer stay in Indonesian. In addition, it was also economically beneficial for the economy of local people.

“It needs to be re-socialized because it is feared there will be deviations from the provisions. For instance, the elderly travelers do not live at the home of Indonesian residents or if they contract a house, no Indonesian maids work in their house, so it does not to give any benefits to local community. To that end, it needs to be reminded again,” he explained.

It was said the policy was enforced selectively, where the policy was only valid for foreigners benefiting the welfare of the people, the nation and the Republic of Indonesia and did not jeopardize the security and the order. Similarly, they were not hostile to both the people and the Homeland based on the Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.

“Only those who are beneficial to the development we can accept. To that end, we apply a selective policy, not all foreigners can be granted a residence permit because their presence is not useful or beneficial to us,” he said.

“The elderly foreign travelers are those aged at least 55 years old,” he said.

DENPASAR - Bali exported US$221.45 million worth of goods in the first five months of the year or 2.22 percent lower than US$226.48 million in the same period last year.

Small and cottage industries contributed more to the export earning of Bali during that

period, the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS) said.

pore are the main countries of destination for export commodities from Bali, head of the provincial

office of BPS Panusunan Siregar said here on Wednesday.

Exports to the United States made up 20.82 percent to and to Singapore 14.62 percent of the Bali’s total exports, Siregar said.

Other major markets include Japan, Australia and Thailand,

he added.

Other main export commodities from Bali are fish and shrimps accounting for 22.14 percent, furniture and house illumination for 14.06 percent, timber products 11.82 percent, jewelry 10.66 percent, and garment 9.66 percent.

To combat HIV/AIDS, Tabanan Health Agency prepares counselors Bali Post

TABANAN - In Bali, Tabanan County is arguably ranked fourth in the case of HIV/AIDS or the position may have been overtaken by other county whose number of HIV case starts experiencing a surge lately. Evidently, until this year the data of the Tabanan Health Agency indicate that people with HIV/AIDS have reached 630 cases. Averagely they are 30-40 years old. More sadly, the HIV/AIDS case has even spread to rural areas.

To minimize the number of such hazardous disease, the Tabanan Health Agency would prepare nurses and midwives from each public health center to become HIV/AIDS counselors.

“Essentially, we prepare counselors and supervisors at the village level. At least, a total of 20 counselors will be given the education for six days,” said the Head of Tabanan Health Agency, Suratmika, Tuesday (Jul 1).

He added, in preparing the counselor, the focus would be on supervision and coaching on the transmission of HIV/AIDS at village level.

“We will prepare all the nurses and midwives as a Local Regional Monitor (PWS) at each village,” he said.

They would consist of nurses and midwives posing the representative of twenty public health centers throughout Tabanan. “In the future, they will oversee the potential of HIV/AIDS transmission in their respective territory. Our target is to provide counseling and testing for potential residents infected by HIV/AIDS, where one of them is pregnant woman,” he said.

He said that his party deliberately involved the midwives because the medical personnel were considered to be very familiar with prospective housewives who frequently performed prenatal care or childbirth consultation.

The counselor training was given by the

officers of the Bali AIDS Mitigation Commission. According to Suratmika, healthy lifestyle and safe behavior should be improved further.

Moreover, the impact of the closing of the Dolly prostitute house in Surabaya had begun to be a threat to Bali, without exception for Tabanan as the closest potential area for the migration. He said there were a number of factors causing the number of HIV AIDS case to continuously rise in Tabanan. Firstly, public awareness was low to do medical checkup so that the case could be recorded. Secondly, the real amount indeed increased as a result of the number of patients due to aberrant behavior.

Thirdly, proliferation of cafés to nook and cranny of villages was likely to become one of the causes.

“These cafés have double function. On the one hand, they sell food and beverages, while on the other hand, they serve as a place of prostitution transaction. It’s very worrying,” he said.

According to him, the existence of those cafés had to be monitored so as not to deviate. In response to these conditions, his party could only make socialization about the prevention of HIV disease and remind the public so as to always give priority to healthy lifestyle. (kmb28)

BANGLI - Coinciding with the 68th anniversary of the Police Corps (Bhayangkara), the ranks of Bangli Police exterminated hundreds of liters of liquor, Tuesday (Jul 1). Located at the courtyard of the Bangli Police Headquarters, the extermination of the liquor obtained in the ‘operation of creating condition’ was undertaken in person by Chief of Bangli Police, Suswanto, Commander of Bangli/1626 Military District,

the regent and other leadership council of Bangli.

The extermination to hundreds of liters of liquor in the form of 362 large bottles of beer, 216 bottles of small beer and 654 liters of arrack was done by disposing them into a ditch in front of the Bangli Police Headquarters. It was deliberately not carried out by breaking or crushing the bottles with heavy equipment to avoid hazardous waste.

Other than beer, hundreds of liters of arrack were also managed to be seized

from several stalls of residents including from the arrack supplier to the Bangli region. With the extermination to hundreds of liters of liquor, his party hoped to protect the public from the hazards of liquor. Similarly, it was also intended to give a deterrent effect on people who had been abusing liquor.

Meanwhile, prior to the extermination of the liquor, the Bangli Police also organized a rally for celebrating the 68th Police

Corps Anniversary 2014. The rally led in person by the Bangli Police Chief was attended by community leaders, customary leaders, religious leaders, the Bangli/1626 District Military Command officers and a number of other invitees. In the rally last Tuesday was also conferred the Setya Lencana Nararya award to four Bangli Police officers who had served for more than 24 years and 16 years by the Chief of Bangli Police, Suswanto. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

She will play Kate Callahan, a seasoned undercover agent whose superior work at the FBI has earned her a place in the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

CBS says her “Criminal Minds” character will be introduced in the series’ 10th season premiere, set to air Oct. 1.

The “Criminal Minds” cast also includes Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore and A.J. Cook.

NEW YORK — Tori Spelling can crack Jennie Garth up. When thinking of an upcoming scene from their new ABC Family sitcom, “Mystery Girls,” Garth giggles at the memory of Spelling going for it, making a funny face and using a strange voice. That’s just one reason the two like to work together.

“I feel safe doing some, like, goofy, crazy face and voice because it’s my friend.

I know she’s gonna be there to support my efforts,” explained Spelling in a recent interview.

“She knows I love it,” added Garth, who readily admits she’s the first to break character in a scene.

Unless you skipped the 1990s, you know they were co-stars on one of the most popular TV shows of that era, “Beverly Hills, 90210,” about teens living in the exclusive Southern California zip code.

It went off the air after 10 seasons in 2000 but Spelling and Garth have remained friends. They even briefly reprised their roles for the CW’s “90210” reboot.

Spelling guest starred on a couple of episodes. Garth appeared on the first two seasons.

They never expected to work together full-time again but Spelling came up for the premise and it all fell into place. On “Mystery Girls,” Garth and Spelling play former co-stars of a hit 90s detective TV show of the same name. They’ve gone their separate ways, until a crime occurs, and the witness will only talk to them. From this, they end up opening a detective agency.

They chose to do a sitcom because, “it’s more fun than doing a drama,” said Garth.

“The schedule, the hours. We both have a lot of kids so it’s like banker’s hours compared to doing an episodic show like an hour-long drama or something.”

MANGUPURA - The handling of abrasion on a number of beaches in Badung in 2014 is resumed again. At the moment, Badung government will perform data collection and dissemination to the public regarding the existing condition of each coastal region. As planned, the beaches in Kuta subdistrict such as Seminyak, Legian and Kuta will be chosen as the next target.

The Head of Badung Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, I Made Badra, revealed that the coastal arrangement program in Badung was being coordinated with central and provincial government through the Bali-Penida River Agency.

Besides, the coordination team for the coastal arrangement in Badung had been established through the Decree of the Badung Regent in 2014.

The coordination team just needed to make data collection and dissemination to the public regarding the existing condition of each coastal area in Badung. Later, the team with the Bali-Penida River Agency would design a strategic

program to continue the handling and management of the coastal abrasion. “So, if there are some stretches of the beach needing to be arranged, they will be proposed to central government,” said Badra.

According to him, the coastal area of Legian, Seminyak and Kuta had been included in the arrangement program.

However, he could not ascertain when the arrangement began. His party mentioned it needed time to disseminate it to the public. This arrangement posed the continuation of the previous arrangement on Cemagi Beach, North Kuta subdistrict undergoing severe abrasion.

“The coastal area at Cemagi was handled last year along 400 meters. We have now started conducting the search of location and the arrangement will be continued to the south coast because some sections need handling such as around Centro, Kuta. The sand around the area is still eroded,” he said.

Regarding the technical matters, said Badra, it belonged to the authority of the Bali-Penida River Agency. The Badung Livestock, Fishery and Maritime Affairs only made coordination for the handling and disseminate information to the public so it could be entirely received by the community.

He said the central government through a special team would conduct an assessment against the proposal of the abrasion handling in Badung that had been filed. The team also included the lender. As planned, the abrasion handling in Badung would use a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). (kmb25)
