‘Ted’ outstrips ‘Mike’ in big box-office weekend

LOS ANGELES — It’s both a bear and bull market for Hollywood.

The bear is “Ted,” Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane’s comedy for Universal Pictures about a talking teddy bear, which opened as the No. 1 movie with $54.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

And the bulls are baring it in the Warner Bros. release “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh’s male-stripper tale that debuted a strong No. 2 with $39.2 million.

The two new movies were backed by a deep bench, with Pixar Animation’s Disney fairy tale “Brave” holding up well at No. 3 with $34 million in its second weekend. “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection,” the latest from the dependable breadwinner

for Lionsgate Films, opened solidly at No. 4 with $26.4 million.

The four movies combined to keep Hollywood in the money compared to the same weekend last year, when “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” launched with $97.9 million.

“Ted’s” opening was the third-highest R-rated comedy debut, behind last year’s “Hangover 2” ($85.9 million) and 2010’s “Sex and the City 2” ($57 million), but it was the biggest ever Rrated non-sequel comedy opening.

It was an equally big weekend overseas, where two huge franchises got a head-start on their U.S. openings. The 20th Century Fox animated sequel “Ice Age: Continental Drift” opened with $78 million in 34 international markets, while Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” debuted with $50.2 million in 13 markets. “Amazing Spider-Man”

opens domestically Tuesday for the Fourth of July weekend, while “Continental Drift” has its U.S. debut July 13.

Domestic revenues totaled $207.7 million, up 3 percent from the same weekend in 2011, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

That was quite an accomplishment, considering the Fourth of July fell on Monday last year, making it a long holiday weekend.

“It was absolutely astonishing that we’re beating the same weekend a year ago given the enormity of the film, the big sci-fi blockbuster that opened then,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “This played out like a holiday weekend without it really being a holiday weekend. It speaks volumes about the importance of having a wide variety of films in the marketplace.”

Jackson, to name a few — the most stirring moment came not from a superstar, but from the mother of one. Whitney Houston’s mother Cissy provided the emotional highlight of Sunday’s ceremony as she sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in tribute to her late daughter, leaving audience members like Beyonce and Soulja Boy in tears.

Mariah Carey opened the tribute, and her voice wavered as she told stories about Houston. She recalled the last time she saw Houston last year, and how the two laughed and gossiped together. “I miss my friend,” Carey said. “I miss hearing her voice and laughter.”

R&B singer Monica was vocally top-notch as she sang “I Love The Lord,” a gospel song once sang by Houston; Brandy sang two upbeat Houston hits, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” Chaka Khan blazed the stage with “I’m Every Woman,” which Houston remade. Gary Houston, Whitney’s brother, also performed; and Houston’s “Waiting to Exhale” cast mates — Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine — also honored the singer.

But it was Cissy Houston’s soaring performance that brought the audience to their feet, and had many dabbing their eyes. The tribute came five months after Houston’s death: She died the night before the Grammy Awards of an accidental drowning complicated by heart disease and cocaine use.

Long traffic congestion happened to a number of road sections downtown Denpasar on Saturday (Jun 30). To avoid similar congestion, now the road body on Jalan Gajah Mada had been half opened after totally closed in conjunction with the installation of paving block. Nevertheless, some criticisms continued to flow in response to the closure on the first day.

Scathing criticism was revealed by a legislator of Denpasar House, AA Susruta Ngurah Putra. The people’s representative was once stuck in a very long and annoying congestion. “The congestion on last Saturday was incredible.

It should not happen if there had been coordination of relevant agencies,” said a member of Commission C in the Denpasar House, Sunday (Jul 1).

According to Susruta Ngurah Putra, the coordination should have been conducted by the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) as institution being responsible for the project with the Transportation Agency far in advance. As solution, he suggested to half open the Jalan Gajah Mada. It was taken to avoid very long traffic congestion. “Alternatively, Jalan Thamrin should be opened for two lanes so that

vehicles entering the Jalan Gajah Mada can be reduced. Therefore, they will not accumulate at one point as happened on Saturday,” he said.

When confirmed separately, the project leader of Jalan Gajah Mada paving block installation, Gede Cipta Sudewa, said that his party had evaluated after the long traffic congestion occurring on the first day or Saturday (Jun 30). He said that Jalan Gajah Mada totally closed earlier had been half opened. Related to the suggestion of opening the Jalan Thamrin for two lanes instead of one lane from the south, his party did not have the authority to do so. “It belongs to the authority of Transportation Agency. However, we still continue to coordinate with the Transportation Agency,” he said.

pasar Transportation Agency, Gde Astika, said there had been some anticipations associated with the congestion on Jalan Gajah Mada.

Firstly, he said, was directing vehicles to Jalan Gunung Kawi, Denpasar. Secondly, Jalan Thamrin was opened for two lanes leading to Jalan Imam Bonjol.

However, he said, the solution was not without a risk. As in the first alternative, if vehicles were directed to Jalan Gunung Kawi, then the traffic light on Jalan Sumatra should be turned on.

As consequence, it would trigger congestion on Jalan Sumatra.

Nevertheless, for certainty about the alternative would be discussed first on Monday. “Please do accept our apologies for this inconvenience and we also thank the community for their suggestion and criticism extended to us,” he said. (kmb13)

Execution of two projects in the heart of Denpasar, in the form of paving block installation on Jalan Gajah Mada and construction of basement parking lot on Jalan Sulawesi, reaped complaint from residents. It specially happened on Saturday (Jun 30) and caused the traffic flow on Jalan Gajah Mada truly crowded and jammed. Even, to pass through the intersection of Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Kartini it took them up to 40 minutes.

“It’s really crowded. Apparently, the municipal government never thinks of the impact of both projects in the heart of the city executed simultaneously,” said Adi, one of the road users on Jalan Gajah Mada revealing his complain to the editor of Bali Post via phone, Saturday night.

Adi admitted the crowdedness of traffic flow in the heart of Denpasar he lived through was inseparable from the installation of paving block and central parking construction. Ironically, he accused the project implementer seemed to have poor coordination with the Transportation Agency so the traffic congestion on the road section was getting worse.

“Why should the two projects be executed at the same time? Actually, they can be planned better by considering the smoothness of traffic flow in this area,” he complained.

Against the complaint, the technical executive officer (PPTK) doubling as the Division Head of Spatial Planning in the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP), I Gede Cipta Sudewa, confirmed on Sunday (Jul 1) that on the first day of paving block installation work the traffic flow arrangement was still on trial. At that time, the traffic flows to Jalan Gajah Mada Timur was totally closed. As a result, the congestion was unavoidable. “We’ve evaluated this matter because it was still on trial on Saturday,” he said.

Cipta Sudewa said by seeing the results of evaluation, his party had made a change to the traffic flow arrangement. Last Sunday, he said, the traffic flow remained to be half opened. In other words, vehicles could still use one lane and another lane was for project work. “From our observation in the field just now (Sunday—Ed), the traffic flow could turn smoother.

Even, some larger buses could also pass through,” he said. (kmb12)

To be known the abrasion at Jumpai now reached 100 meters and have been going for a long time. The abrasion even reached nearby the pier project that was just built and have victimized one seaweed business where its walls have collapsed. What’s interesting the locals anticipate the abrasion by stating a fine will be given to outsiders including truck drivers and it’s workers who took sands from the shores as much as IDR 3 million. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A study of Greenland’s rocks may have turned up something unexpected: the oldest and largest meteorite crater ever found on Earth.

Researchers think the crater was formed 3 billion years ago, making it the oldest ever found, said Danish researcher Adam Garde. The impact crater currently measures about 62 miles (100 kilometers) from one side to another. But before it eroded, it was likely more than 310 miles (500 km) wide, which would make it the biggest on Earth, Garde told OurAmazingPlanet.

The team has calculated it was caused by a meteorite 19 miles (30 km) wide, which, if it hit Earth today, would wipe out all higher life.

In the 3 billion years since impact, the land has been eroded down to about 16 miles (25 km) below the original surface. But the effects of the intense shock wave and heat penetrated deep into the Earth, and remain visible today, said Garde, a researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. Garde had been conducting research on Greenland’s geology and

noticed several strange features that didn’t make sense. One day in September 2009, he came up with the extreme explanation of an impact from a meteorite. His team collected samples over the years and published the results in the July issue of the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. He’s now “100 percent positive” it’s a crater, for several reasons, he said.

For one, he found widespread crushed rocks in a circular shape that seemed to be caused by the shock waves of a massive impact. Second, there are deposits of a melted mineral called K-feldspar (or potassium-feldspar) that could have been liquefied only at extremely high heat, like that caused by an meteorite’s crashlanding. There’s also widespread evidence of weathering by hot water, which he thinks was caused by the ocean rushing into the crater after it struck the area. The area may have been covered by a shallow ocean at the time, but even if it wasn’t, it doesn’t matter, Garde said. “The crater from a meteorite that big would have caused the sea to rush in,” he said.

WASHINGTON — Using genetics, scientists have been able to dig up the dirt on why homegrown tomatoes taste so much sweeter than the ones in the supermarket.

Researchers found a genetic switch responsible for some of the sugar production within a tomato. A new study in Friday’s edition of Science found that the

common type of tomato bred for firmness and good shipping also inadvertently turns off the sugarproducing switch. That makes it less sweet and blander than garden varieties.

University of California Davis plant scientist Ann Powell said knowing the genetics behind the sugar-making could lead someday to development of sweeter tomatoes that also travel well.

Headman of Jatiluwih, I Nengah Wirata, agreed if there were investors interested in

investing in his area. He hoped they could make the management of Jatiluwih more professional and create job opportunities for local residents, other than farming.

“We welcome any investors, but they must provide clear benefits for the community.

Do not only make us an object,” he said.

One of his suggestions was the purchase of farmers’ crop so that farmers would not be harmed by middlemen. This man also questioned about the relocation plan of Subak Museum to his territory.

DENPASAR - The Peace Generation Bali, the drugs care community in Bali province, has predicted that 1.3 percent of Bali’s population of about four million are suspected of being drug users.

“Most of the drug users are under 20 years of age,” Komsa Nursalam, a member of the Peace Generation Bali, said here on Sunday, adding that some of the drug users are school students.

Such condition is very alarming, so that the danger of being drug users should be publicized among the younger generation especially to the students, he said.

“Thus, we always share knowledge about drug abuse. To those who have become drug users, we suggest them to join rehabilitation measure,” Komsa Nursalam said.

In addition, those who have become drug users are urged to come to the Kuta Utara health centre and the Sanglah general hospital here.

Previously, hundreds of high school students in Sukabumi, West Java were suspected of being drug users, according to a non-governmental organization that works to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. “According to our data, there are 1.500 drug users in Sukabumi, and up to three percent of the figure are high school students, or about 5060 people,” said the organization`s Program Manager, Yudha Ilham Affandi, here on Wednesday (June 20).

According to Yudha, the organization believes that one in every ten students is a drug user.

The majority of students involved with drugs are using injection-types of drugs such as crystal meth, heroin, and morphine.

Furthermore, Yudha said that the organization is now holding a campaign to publicize the danger of using illegal drugs and narcotics.

Yudha also asked drug addicts to seek assistance from his organization, where they will not be reported to the authorities.

Recently Vice President Boediono called for an all-out war against drug-related crimes, saying they can destroy an individual, family, community, and even a nation.

MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s old rulers claimed victory in a presidential election on Sunday, ending 12 years in opposition after a campaign dominated by a sputtering economy and rampant drug violence. After pledging to restore order and ramp up economic growth, Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) had a clear lead over his rivals in exit polls and a “quick count” conducted by electoral authorities.

Although his main rival said it was too early to concede defeat, the 45-year-old Pena Nieto delivered a late-night victory speech to cheering supporters, and a senior electoral official said the PRI candidate’s lead was “irreversible”.

“Mexicans have given our party another chance. We are going to honor it with results,” a visibly moved Pena Nieto told followers packed inside the PRI headquarters in Mexico City.

MANILA, Philippines — A huge crocodile known as Lolong has brought pride, fear, tourism revenue and attention to the remote southern Philippines town where it was captured. And now it has claimed a world record, too.

Guinness World Records declared the giant, blamed for deadly attacks before it was captured last September, is the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity in the world.

The news sparked celebrations in Bunawan, a farming town of 37,000 in Agusan del Sur province, but Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said it also fostered concerns that more giant crocodiles might lurk in a marshland and creek where villagers fish.

“There were mixed feelings,” Elorde said by telephone. “We’re really proud because it proves the rich biodiversity of our place but at the same time, there are fears that Lolong may not be alone.”

Lolong has become the star attraction of a new ecotourism park and research center in the outskirts of Bunawan and has drawn thousands of tourists since

news of its capture spread. Elorde said his town has earned 3 million pesos ($72,000) from the modest entrance fees at the park, with most of the money being used to feed and care for the crocodile and maintain the park.

Lolong measures 20.24 feet (6.17 meters) and weighs more than a ton, Guinness spokeswoman Anne-Lise Rouse said in a statement seen Sunday. The reptile took the top spot from an Australian crocodile that measured more than 17 feet (5 meters) and weighed nearly a ton.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje welcomed the Guinness announcement and the growing attention for the crocodile, saying it would help people realize the biodiversity of their surroundings and the need to protect it. He said he would recommend that the government help Bunawan become an ecotourism destination.

The crocodile was captured with steel cable traps during a three-week hunt after a child was killed in 2009 and a fisherman went missing. Water buffalos have also been attacked by crocodiles in the area.

“To improve the agricultural sector, it needs the intervention of the government,” he said recently in Denpasar.

He added the involvement of government was very important, especially regarding the commodities having the export value. Unfortunately, he considered the development so far was weak.

“Government intervention, among others, is providing subsidies and protection, especially for farmers who are being marginalized,” he said. Windia also chairing the subak system research group of the Udayana University added that agricultural products could not compete in foreign markets because they had not been addressed seriously. Farmers, especially the younger generation, were reluctant to involve deeply in the agricultural sector.

They considered it less promising, so that conversion of farmland function, particularly in Bali, was increasingly out of control.

Meanwhile, in a separate location, the head of Indonesia Farmers Association (HKTI) of Bali, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, said that structural policies and the shifting of socio-economic values had resulted in the need for farmers to sell their farmland. Excessive development in the tourism, industrial, commercial and other sectors had become a great share for that compulsion. Besides, the increasingly higher selling price of tax object (NJOP) had surpassed the ability of farmers to pay for it. “That’s why the surviving farmers today are only those with side jobs while constantly lamenting their poverty,” he said.

Suparta admitted that a lot of farm lands or moors had been changed into residential buildings, farm buildings, villa, or short-term industrial plants with short-term water absorbability. “The fact today is that younger generation tends to be more interested in other area outside the agriculture. Fisherman village transform into tourism destination

SHANGHAI - Apple Inc has paid $60 million to Proview Technology (Shenzhen) to end a dispute over the iPad trademark in China that saw the world’s most valuable technology company engaged in a protracted legal tussle with a nearbankrupt Chinese firm.

Apple had said it bought ownership of the iPad trademark in various countries from Proview, once a global monitor maker, but the Chinese company argued the U.S. firm dealt with only one unit of Proview.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on Monday.

The iPad dominates China’s tablet PC market with more than 70 percent market share, though Lenovo Group Ltd’s Lepads and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s Galaxy Tabs have been gaining traction.

For Proview - which local media had said was seeking as much as 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion) from Apple - and its creditors, the settlement should be welcomed, some lawyers said.

The $60 million will be paid into a court-designated account and used to pay Proview’s creditors, said a source familiar with the situation. In March, Taiwan’s Fubon Insurance, one of several Proview creditors and a unit of Fubon Financial Holding Co Ltd, applied for bankruptcy proceedings against Proview because of $8.68 million in outstanding debt.

SAN DIEGO — Negotiators from the United States and eight other Pacific Rim nations open a round of talks in San Diego on one of the most ambitious trade deals in decades.

The 13th round begins Monday amid criticism from U.S. lawmakers that they are being left out of the loop in the TransPacific Partnership. Two-thirds of House Democrats last week wrote to the White House’s top trade official to insist they be heard.

Darrell Issa, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has asked to attend the latest round, which runs through July 10.

The United States has been negotiating the pact for about three years. It includes Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Mexico and Canada are expected to join, and Japan has expressed interest.

Sanur with the beautiful white sandy beaches and the famous Le Mayeur Museum are well known by tourists throughout the world. One of the icons for Bali tourism has been famous since the colonialism era.

At that time, the Netherlands army landed on Sanur Beach in 1906.

The beach also can be found in very old inscription about Bali’s history and also on an old stone writing of the Kasari Warmadewa King in 917 where now can be seen on the southern part of Blanjong, Sanur.

Then, the small village started to get its name among the foreign artists. In 1930, many foreign artists lived in Sanur, some of them were Katharane and Jack Mershon, dancers and photographer from US, Hans and Rolf Neuhaus who made art gallery in the fishermen village.

However, the most monumental artist ever stayed in Sanur obviously was a painter from Belgium, Andrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres.

Then, he married a woman from Banjar Kelandis, Ni Polok and stayed in the village since 1937.

The couple was the first to introduce Sanur Beach to the international world as a wonderful tourism destination.

As the time go by, Sanur changed

significantly. The transformation happened on the way of live of the inhabitants and the economics condition of Sanur. Many tourism businesses developed rapidly in the village.

Sanur developed into an icon of tourism village, well known by tourists throughout the world, especially after the establishment of Bali Beach Hotel in 1966. Before the hotel officially opened, the tourists stayed in Bali Hotel in Denpasar.

Sanur, consists of two main village, northern Sanur and western Sanur, as well as Sanur district, is a part of Denpasar Government. In the traditional division of village, Sanur divided into four areas, Sanur, Intaran, and Penyaringan.

The attraction of Sanur Beach can be seen on the north which is a half circular shape and on the southern part where the beach turns from east to the west. The wave is also not too big and when the tide is low, there is a beautiful view of

the colorful coral reefs.

The tourism accommodation in Sanur actually had been existed since 1965 where a national cruise company opened bungalow on Sindhu Beach, Sanur by the name Sindhu Beach Hotel.

The hotel caught the local by surprise because they were not accustomed by staying near the beach.

However, after the development of tourism gave its benefit for the locals in the area, the transformation became even more obvious in Sanur.

The head of Indonesian Tour Guide Association (HPI), I Nyoman Kandia, said that Sanur is still one of the favorite destinations in

Bali even after other destination developed in the island.

“The tourism site is beautiful and has great historical value, two main things needed to become famous destination in Bali,” he added.

Kandia also said that the supporting facilities for tourism are also very complete in Sanur. In addition to hotels, other tourism businesses also develop in the area such as souvenir and handicrafts shops.

That is also including the entertainment industry which develops along with the tourism business.

Nowadays, fishermen seem to be forgotten by the people in Sanur and most of them turn to the tourism industry.

Unfortunetly, the development of Sanur in tourism is not being prepared properly. As Michel Picard wrote in his book “Bali, Cultural Tourism and Tourism Culture”, Sanur has no proper plan of development especially in tourism. Hong Kong’s biggest protest for nearly a decade packed the former British colony’s streets in a defiant reception for its new leader and a show of popular anger after 15 years of Chinese rule.

The vast rally came after Leung Chunying, a millionaire property consultant seen as close to China’s communist authorities, was sworn in as chief executive in front of Chinese President Hu Jintao -- who had his speech interrupted.

Hu’s visit and Leung’s inauguration have become focal points for growing discontent towards Beijing, which has surged to a new post-handover high amid soaring housing costs, limited democracy and perceived meddling

by China.

“Hong Kong has become much worse off,” Eric Lai of the Civil Human Rights Front told the marchers.

“Our rights are under serious threat.”

Organisers put the crowd at 400,000, their largest claimed turnout for eight years and almost twice their number last year. But police said only 63,000 attended -- although that was also their largest figure for eight years.

The July 1 marches marking Hong Kong’s handover have become an annual fixture since 2003, when 500,000 people showed their fury over a security bill and economic downturn, a key factor in the then chief executive Tung Chee-hwa stepping down the

following year.

Sunday’s crowd ranged from engineers and civil servants to maids and students, and represented groups from the Falun Gong spiritual movement to trade unions, as well as ordinary citizens young and old.

In sweltering heat the last of them reached their destination almost six hours after the first marchers set out, and along the way they blocked streets far across the city, stranding buses and trams as they surrounded them.

Mostly clad in the mourning colours of black and white, they carried placards calling for “One person one vote” and chanted “Power to the people”, sometimes in more of a carnival atmosphere, complete with drums and songs. The financial centre enjoys significant autonomy and civil liberties unheard of on the mainland under the “one country, two systems” model covering its return to China in 1997 after more than a century of British rule.

But marcher Jacky Lim, 37, who carried Hong Kong’s former colonial flag bearing the British union jack, said: “There is nothing worth celebrating today. Hong Kong is being gradually destroyed by the Communist Party.

“The direct interference of Beijing in the election of Leung Chun-ying is a clear example,” he said.

Hong Kong does not yet choose its leader by universal suffrage, and Leung was elected as chief executive in March by a committee stacked with pro-Beijing business elites.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said it “fully respected” freedom of expression and the right to “take part in processions”, and would listen to the demonstrators’ views “in a humble manner”.

Earlier, as President Hu began his speech to around 2,300 guests at Leung’s inauguration, a protestor inside the harbourfront venue repeatedly shouted “End one-party rule”.

The man also referred to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in Beijing, and was rapidly bundled away by security personnel, while the audience drowned him out with extended applause for Hu. Beijing’s support for “one country, two systems” and the right of Hong Kongers to rule the territory was “unwavering”, said Hu. “We will follow the Basic Law... to continue to advance democratic development in Hong Kong,” said the president, who will step down as part of a once-in-adecade leadership transition in Beijing starting later this year.

Hu -- who said Friday he hoped to understand Hong Kongers’ “life and expectations” -- left for Beijing before the march began.

They did not concede a single goal in any of the knockout round matches in those three tournaments, let in only one in all six games in Ukraine and Poland and their 4-0 triumph was the biggest winning margin in any World Cup or Euro final. The nearest any previous nation has come to matching that level of consistency was the West Germany side who won the 1972 European title, followed by the 1974 World Cup but who then lost on penalties to Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Euro final.

That team, built on the defensive class of Franz Beckenbauer and the phenomenal strike rate of centre forward Gerd Mueller, triumphed in an era when Johan Cruyff’s classy Netherlands were vying for supremacy.

West Germany also won the 1980 European Championship and reached the final of the 1982, 86 and 90 World Cups, winning the latter, as part of an era of unsurpassed dominance but the only link between the early 70s team and their followers was Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as captain and coach.

The only team to match Spain’s haul of three successive “major continental titles were Argentina, who won the then-annual Copa America in 1945, 46 and 47, while Italy’s back-to-back World Cup triumphs in 1934 and 1938 were in a fledgling tournament with limited competition that makes it very difficult to compare with modern equivalents.

Any European country operating before the advent of their own continental competition in 1960 were obviously limited to the World Cup for tangible evidence of their power, which counts heavily against the Hungary team of the 1950s who many claim to have revolutionised the way the game was played.

HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION

Inspired by Ferenc Puskas, Hungary were undoubtedly the dominant force of their age and put together a run of 51 games over six years from 1952-56 with only one defeat. They won the 1952 Olympic football tournament and chalked up stunning 6-3 and 7-1 victories over England but that single blot on their record unfortunately came in the final of the 1954 World Cup when they lost to a West Germany side they had hammered 8-3 in the group stage.

The Hungarian Revolution two years later brought an end to the team and ended any realistic chance of claiming the World Cup win they needed to put them on the same level with the greatest teams of all.

Brazil then took up the mantle, winning the 1958, 62 and 70 World Cups, though only Pele featured in all three competitions. If that makes it difficult to consider the Brazil team of that era as one entity - and they had a 40-year barren spell in the Copa America to further undermine their credentials - then concentrating on the 1970 side is more fruitful territory.

INDONESIA One killed in shooting in Papua Agence France-Presse

JAYAPURA - A village chief was shot dead in Indonesia’s restive Papua province on Sunday, Indonesian military said, blaming separatists who are celebrating the founding of an independence movement.

Up to 30 gunmen had fired shots at village chief Johanes Yanafrom who was riding a motorcycle in Keerom district outside provincial capital Jayapura, Erwin Syafitri, commander of the Cendrawasih Military Command which oversees military operations in Papua, told reporters.

“He died on the spot after he was hit in the head and chest,” he said.

Indonesian military were quick to blame rebels from the pro-independence Free Papua Movement (OPM), which celebrated its 47th anniversary Sunday, for the latest attack. “The group comprised of 20 to 30 people and they were all armed with rifles. They are from the OPM led by Lambert Pekikir.

We believe they have escaped to the mountains and we are chasing after them,” he added.

Pekikir is the OPM commander in Keerom district.

Syafitri said the group also fired shots at a military patrol car, hitting the roof and side window and injuring a soldier.

The OPM separatists had also

raised four banned Morning Star flags in Jayapura and Wamena districts, he said. The OPM had called on their supporters to raise the Papuan flag as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Displaying separatist symbols such as the Morning Star is considered an act of treason in Indonesia under the criminal code and several perpetrators are serving 20-year jail terms for the offence.

Politics, law and security minister Djoko Suyanto condemned Sunday’s attacks and urged the security forces to arrest the perpetrators.

Gun attacks are not uncommon in the Papua region in the resourcerich region, where poorly-armed separatist groups have for decades fought a low-level insurgency for the mostly ethnic Melanesian population.

Since a German tourist was shot and wounded on a Papuan beach on May 29 by suspected separatists, seven civilians and a soldier have died in shootings and other violence, according to the human rights group Kontras.

LONDON - There is not much on a tennis court that will keep 13-times grand-slam champion Serena Williams awake at night, not even a Wimbledon fourth-round clash against a player who won the first set of her last match without losing a point.

They now have not one, but two goldmedal prospects for the sprints at the London Olympics. Blake made it 2 for 2 against world-record holder Usain Bolt, winning the 200 meters at the Jamaican Olympic trials Sunday in 19.80 seconds to edge Bolt by 0.03.

When they crossed the line, Bolt was the first one to approach his training partner and buddy and give him a big bear hug. Moments later, though, the World’s Fastest Man was down on the ground, getting his right hamstring stretched out, while Blake was basking in an understated celebration. For nearly a minute, he simply paced back and forth in front of the packed grandstand, letting all those fans soak in the sight of their new national champion.

“I’m not surprised, because I was working real hard,” Blake said of his back-to-back wins. “And I know Usain will work hard as ever. It’s up to me to keep working hard and keep my form going into the Olympics.”

The win came two days after Blake, the reigning world champion at 100 meters, beat Bolt in the 100 by running a personal-best 9.75.

That was a shocker, but there were explanations — most notably the terrible starts Bolt got off to throughout the 100 heats and in the final, to say

nothing of any doubt that might still linger over the false start that scratched him from worlds last year.

Bolt has always considered the 200, which better suits his lanky 6-foot-5 frame, his real work. And now, indeed, he has work to do there, as well. As they approached the finish, Bolt was grimacing — or was that the hint of a frustrated smile? — as he looked to his left to see what very few thought possible earlier this week: Blake beating him to the line for the second time in three days.

“I can never be discouraged,” Bolt said. “I’m never worried until my coach gets worried, and my coach isn’t worried, so I’m OK.” Said Glen Mills, who coaches both runners: “Usain, he has the experience, the ability, he has been there already. He might be a little off at the moment, but I’m sure when the time of delivery comes around, he’ll be on top of his game.” The clock is ticking. In the women’s 200, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran a personal best 22.10 seconds to also complete the 100-200 sweep. She’ll be joined by Sherone Simpson and two-time defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown.

Fraser-Pryce took the world by surprise four years ago when she won the 100 at Beijing. Her next act could be this 200, her second-best event, where she beat Simpson with lots of room to spare, a 0.27-second margin.

Vitali Klitschko to face Charr in possible last fight Reuters

BERLIN - World heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will defend his WBC crown against little-known 27-year-old German Manuel Charr in Moscow on September 8 in what could be his last career fight.

The 40-year-old, whose younger brother Vladimir holds the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO belts, said he would focus on parliamentary elections in Ukraine after the fight against undefeated Charr and election to office could spell the end of his boxing career.

“Depending on the outcome

of the elections (in October) I will decide on the future of my sporting career,” said Klitschko in a statement. “Holding a political office and being heavyweight champion at the same time are not compatible.”

Klitschko has won 44 of his 46 professional fights and his last bout

was a points victory over Briton Dereck Chisora in February.

He had said in March that his next fight would be against former WBA champion David Haye, who retired in October after losing his title to Vladimir in July 2011 but the muchawaited bout has failed to materialize on a number of occasions.

“Charr is young, hungry and undefeated,” said Klitschko. “He fears no one and always looks forwards. He will be very motivated against me and I will not make the mistake of underestimating him.”

The Syria-born Charr has won all of his 21 fights since turning professional in 2005.

WARSAW, Poland — Twitter says its users fired off more than 15,000 Tweets per second when Spain made its fourth goal in Sunday’s European Championship final, setting a new sports-related record on the social networking site.

The surge in tweets came just weeks before the Olympics Games in London are expected to bring another unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans on social networking sites.

Twitter says total global traffic on its platform peaked at 15,358 tweets per second during the fourth goal Sunday in Kiev, where Spain defeated Italy 4-0. Twitter also registered a total of 16.5 million tweets worldwide during the match.

Among those who tweeted was Pele, the retired Brazilian star. He congratulated Spain and said he was looking forward to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Prandelli’s side certainly exceeded expectations and offered plenty of evidence that they are on the right track even if they were, like everyone else, far from the benchmark set by recordbreaking Spain.

Italy may have had the pedigree of one European Championship title and four World Cup triumphs, but they travelled to Poland and Ukraine with few anticipating a run to the final.

Two years ago in South Africa, their dismal World Cup exit at the group stage led goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to question whether Italy would even be good enough to qualify for the tournament.

That fear proved misplaced but the qualifying campaign was far from stellar and the pretournament form hardly hinted at what was to follow, especially given Spain and Croatia were in Italy’s group.

A 1-1 draw with Spain in the opening game indicated however that Prandelli had found the right recipe for his side as question marks over some of his players were immediately removed.

Another 1-1, this time with Croatia, left all to play for with the final game against Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland and Italy responded well with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli which secured them a place in the last eight.

A quarter-final with England, another team that appeared to be performing above lowered expectations, brought out the quality within the team - Andrea Pirlo was outstanding in midfield and although penalties were needed to dispatch Roy Hodgson’s team - no-one disputed Italy’s right to advance.

Then came the highlight of the tournament - an enthralling and emphatic 2-1 win over Germany in the semi-finals, with Balotelli coming into his own with two goals, the second arguably goal of the tournament, as Italy’s midfield ran the game and their back-line, well lead by the impressive Andrea Barzagli, held firm.

Italy paid for those efforts though three days later when a jaded looking team were dissected by Spain’s incisive passing and intuitive movement.

The final scoreline of 4-0 could be explained away by injuries and the fact that the Azzurri were forced to play the last half hour with 10 men but even without the bad luck of losing third substitute Thiago Motta just four minutes after he came on, Italy were already trailing 2-0.

CLUB SPIRIT

Prandelli’s biggest achievement was to create a ‘club’ type spirit in the squad, welding the players into a genuine team and that will likely mean that he heads into September’s World Cup qualifiers without wanting to make many changes.

But there will be a need to integrate some fresh young talent while at the same time qualification will certainly have to be earned from a group with Denmark and the Czech Republic.

Pirlo will be 35 come the World Cup and has had a long career after starting in Serie A at 16, while Cassano is 30 this month and the 34-year-old Antonio Di Natale is likely to make way for younger striking options.

Italy’s Under-21 squad has produced some players of great potential - strikers Lorenzo Insigne and Mattia Destro along with midfielder Marco Verratti, who is considered an eventual replacement for Pirlo.

KIEV - Triumphant Spain turned their thoughts towards qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and retaining their world title on Monday even as they were celebrating success at Euro 2012.

The Iberian nation became the first country to win back-to-back European championships with a World Cup in between when they thumped Italy 4-0 in Sunday’s final in Kiev.

But such is their thirst for trophies that Vicente del Bosque’s side are already looking ahead to September’s opening Group I qualification match away to Georgia. Spain have set new standards on their way to an unprecedented third straight major title for a European team and, with a relatively young squad, must be firm favourites to win their second World Cup in South America in two years’ time.

At his post-match news conference at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, the 61-yearold Del Bosque paid tribute to the work of his predecessor Luis Aragones, who engineered Spain’s victory at Euro 2008 before stepping down. “We have followed the path laid out by Aragones and now we have new goals,” Del Bosque said.

“France, Belarus, Georgia and Finland in World Cup qualification and

then the Confederations Cup,” he added, in reference to the World Cup curtainraiser in Brazil next year. “We want to put on a good show there.”

DOMINANT DISPLAY

His success at Euro 2012 means Del Bosque becomes only the second coach to win a European Championship and a World Cup title, joining Helmut Schoen, who achieved the feat with West Germany in the early 1970s. A key player in Spain’s success under Del Bosque is Xavi and the Barcelona playmaker came good in the final with two assists and a typically dominant display after an indifferent tournament.

Xavi, who will be 34 by the 2014 World Cup, said he would be available for the tournament in Brazil if he was in good shape. “If I am feeling good I will be there,” he told reporters after the final. “I will talk to the coach but basically yes. Let’s see.”

Any team wishing to challenge Spain will have to work out how to breach their rock solid defences while attempting to thwart their relentless attacks.

Spain have kept a clean sheet in their last 10 knockout matches at the European Championship or World Cup and Casillas has not conceded in an unprecedented 990 minutes.

WARSAW, Poland — Twitter says its users fired off more than 15,000 Tweets per second when Spain made its fourth goal in Sunday’s European Championship final, setting a new sports-related record on the social networking site.

The surge in tweets came just weeks before the Olympics Games in London are expected to bring another unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans on social networking sites.

Twitter says total global traffic on its platform peaked at 15,358 tweets per second during the fourth goal Sunday in Kiev, where Spain defeated Italy 4-0. Twitter also registered a total of 16.5 million tweets worldwide during the match.

Among those who tweeted was Pele, the retired Brazilian star. He congratulated Spain and said he was looking forward to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Prandelli’s side certainly exceeded expectations and offered plenty of evidence that they are on the right track even if they were, like everyone else, far from the benchmark set by recordbreaking Spain.

Italy may have had the pedigree of one European Championship title and four World Cup triumphs, but they travelled to Poland and Ukraine with few anticipating a run to the final.

Two years ago in South Africa, their dismal World Cup exit at the group stage led goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to question whether Italy would even be good enough to qualify for the tournament.

That fear proved misplaced but the qualifying campaign was far from stellar and the pretournament form hardly hinted at what was to follow, especially given Spain and Croatia were in Italy’s group.

A 1-1 draw with Spain in the opening game indicated however that Prandelli had found the right recipe for his side as question marks over some of his players were immediately removed.

Another 1-1, this time with Croatia, left all to play for with the final game against Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland and Italy responded well with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli which secured them a place in the last eight.

A quarter-final with England, another team that appeared to be performing above lowered expectations, brought out the quality within the team - Andrea Pirlo was outstanding in midfield and although penalties were needed to dispatch Roy Hodgson’s team - no-one disputed Italy’s right to advance.

Then came the highlight of the tournament - an enthralling and emphatic 2-1 win over Germany in the semi-finals, with Balotelli coming into his own with two goals, the second arguably goal of the tournament, as Italy’s midfield ran the game and their back-line, well lead by the impressive Andrea Barzagli, held firm.

Italy paid for those efforts though three days later when a jaded looking team were dissected by Spain’s incisive passing and intuitive movement.

The final scoreline of 4-0 could be explained away by injuries and the fact that the Azzurri were forced to play the last half hour with 10 men but even without the bad luck of losing third substitute Thiago Motta just four minutes after he came on, Italy were already trailing 2-0.

CLUB SPIRIT

Prandelli’s biggest achievement was to create a ‘club’ type spirit in the squad, welding the players into a genuine team and that will likely mean that he heads into September’s World Cup qualifiers without wanting to make many changes.

But there will be a need to integrate some fresh young talent while at the same time qualification will certainly have to be earned from a group with Denmark and the Czech Republic.

Pirlo will be 35 come the World Cup and has had a long career after starting in Serie A at 16, while Cassano is 30 this month and the 34-year-old Antonio Di Natale is likely to make way for younger striking options.

Italy’s Under-21 squad has produced some players of great potential - strikers Lorenzo Insigne and Mattia Destro along with midfielder Marco Verratti, who is considered an eventual replacement for Pirlo.

LONDON - There is not much on a tennis court that will keep 13-times grand-slam champion Serena Williams awake at night, not even a Wimbledon fourth-round clash against a player who won the first set of her last match without losing a point.

The powerful Yaroslava Shvedova stands between the American and the quarter-finals on Monday, having dispatched Italy’s Sara Errani 6-0 6-4 after winning the first 24 points of the match.

They now have not one, but two goldmedal prospects for the sprints at the London Olympics. Blake made it 2 for 2 against world-record holder Usain Bolt, winning the 200 meters at the Jamaican Olympic trials Sunday in 19.80 seconds to edge Bolt by 0.03.

When they crossed the line, Bolt was the first one to approach his training partner and buddy and give him a big bear hug. Moments later, though, the World’s Fastest Man was down on the ground, getting his right hamstring stretched out, while Blake was basking in an understated celebration. For nearly a minute, he simply paced back and forth in front of the packed grandstand, letting all those fans soak in the sight of their new national champion.

“I’m not surprised, because I was working real hard,” Blake said of his back-to-back wins. “And I know Usain will work hard as ever. It’s up to me to keep working hard and keep my form going into the Olympics.”

The win came two days after Blake, the reigning world champion at 100 meters, beat Bolt in the 100 by running a personal-best 9.75.

That was a shocker, but there were explanations — most notably the terrible starts Bolt got off to throughout the 100 heats and in the final, to say

nothing of any doubt that might still linger over the false start that scratched him from worlds last year.

Bolt has always considered the 200, which better suits his lanky 6-foot-5 frame, his real work. And now, indeed, he has work to do there, as well. As they approached the finish, Bolt was grimacing — or was that the hint of a frustrated smile? — as he looked to his left to see what very few thought possible earlier this week: Blake beating him to the line for the second time in three days.

“I can never be discouraged,” Bolt said. “I’m never worried until my coach gets worried, and my coach isn’t worried, so I’m OK.” Said Glen Mills, who coaches both runners: “Usain, he has the experience, the ability, he has been there already. He might be a little off at the moment, but I’m sure when the time of delivery comes around, he’ll be on top of his game.” The clock is ticking. In the women’s 200, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran a personal best 22.10 seconds to also complete the 100-200 sweep. She’ll be joined by Sherone Simpson and two-time defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown.

Fraser-Pryce took the world by surprise four years ago when she won the 100 at Beijing. Her next act could be this 200, her second-best event, where she beat Simpson with lots of room to spare, a 0.27-second margin.

Vitali Klitschko to face Charr in possible last fight Reuters

BERLIN - World heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will defend his WBC crown against little-known 27-year-old German Manuel Charr in Moscow on September 8 in what could be his last career fight.

The 40-year-old, whose younger brother Vladimir holds the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO belts, said he would focus on parliamentary elections in Ukraine after the fight against undefeated Charr and election to office could spell the end of his boxing career.

“Depending on the outcome

of the elections (in October) I will decide on the future of my sporting career,” said Klitschko in a statement. “Holding a political office and being heavyweight champion at the same time are not compatible.”

Klitschko has won 44 of his 46 professional fights and his last bout

was a points victory over Briton Dereck Chisora in February.

He had said in March that his next fight would be against former WBA champion David Haye, who retired in October after losing his title to Vladimir in July 2011 but the muchawaited bout has failed to materialize on a number of occasions.

“Charr is young, hungry and undefeated,” said Klitschko. “He fears no one and always looks forwards. He will be very motivated against me and I will not make the mistake of underestimating him.”

The Syria-born Charr has won all of his 21 fights since turning professional in 2005.

Hong Kong’s biggest protest for nearly a decade packed the former British colony’s streets in a defiant reception for its new leader and a show of popular anger after 15 years of Chinese rule.

The vast rally came after Leung Chunying, a millionaire property consultant seen as close to China’s communist authorities, was sworn in as chief executive in front of Chinese President Hu Jintao -- who had his speech interrupted.

Hu’s visit and Leung’s inauguration have become focal points for growing discontent towards Beijing, which has surged to a new post-handover high amid soaring housing costs, limited democracy and perceived meddling

by China.

“Hong Kong has become much worse off,” Eric Lai of the Civil Human Rights Front told the marchers.

“Our rights are under serious threat.”

Organisers put the crowd at 400,000, their largest claimed turnout for eight years and almost twice their number last year. But police said only 63,000 attended -- although that was also their largest figure for eight years.

The July 1 marches marking Hong Kong’s handover have become an annual fixture since 2003, when 500,000 people showed their fury over a security bill and economic downturn, a key factor in the then chief executive Tung Chee-hwa stepping down the

following year.

Sunday’s crowd ranged from engineers and civil servants to maids and students, and represented groups from the Falun Gong spiritual movement to trade unions, as well as ordinary citizens young and old.

In sweltering heat the last of them reached their destination almost six hours after the first marchers set out, and along the way they blocked streets far across the city, stranding buses and trams as they surrounded them.

Mostly clad in the mourning colours of black and white, they carried placards calling for “One person one vote” and chanted “Power to the people”, sometimes in more of a carnival atmosphere, complete with drums and songs. The financial centre enjoys significant autonomy and civil liberties unheard of on the mainland under the “one country, two systems” model covering its return to China in 1997 after more than a century of British rule.

But marcher Jacky Lim, 37, who carried Hong Kong’s former colonial flag bearing the British union jack, said: “There is nothing worth celebrating today. Hong Kong is being gradually destroyed by the Communist Party.

“The direct interference of Beijing in the election of Leung Chun-ying is a clear example,” he said.

Hong Kong does not yet choose its leader by universal suffrage, and Leung was elected as chief executive in March by a committee stacked with pro-Beijing business elites.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said it “fully respected” freedom of expression and the right to “take part in processions”, and would listen to the demonstrators’ views “in a humble manner”.

Earlier, as President Hu began his speech to around 2,300 guests at Leung’s inauguration, a protestor inside the harbourfront venue repeatedly shouted “End one-party rule”.

The man also referred to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in Beijing, and was rapidly bundled away by security personnel, while the audience drowned him out with extended applause for Hu. Beijing’s support for “one country, two systems” and the right of Hong Kongers to rule the territory was “unwavering”, said Hu. “We will follow the Basic Law... to continue to advance democratic development in Hong Kong,” said the president, who will step down as part of a once-in-adecade leadership transition in Beijing starting later this year.

Hu -- who said Friday he hoped to understand Hong Kongers’ “life and expectations” -- left for Beijing before the march began.

They did not concede a single goal in any of the knockout round matches in those three tournaments, let in only one in all six games in Ukraine and Poland and their 4-0 triumph was the biggest winning margin in any World Cup or Euro final. The nearest any previous nation has come to matching that level of consistency was the West Germany side who won the 1972 European title, followed by the 1974 World Cup but who then lost on penalties to Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Euro final.

That team, built on the defensive class of Franz Beckenbauer and the phenomenal strike rate of centre forward Gerd Mueller, triumphed in an era when Johan Cruyff’s classy Netherlands were vying for supremacy.

West Germany also won the 1980 European Championship and reached the final of the 1982, 86 and 90 World Cups, winning the latter, as part of an era of unsurpassed dominance but the only link between the early 70s team and their followers was Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup as captain and coach.

The only team to match Spain’s haul of three successive “major continental titles were Argentina, who won the then-annual Copa America in 1945, 46 and 47, while Italy’s back-to-back World Cup triumphs in 1934 and 1938 were in a fledgling tournament with limited competition that makes it very difficult to compare with modern equivalents.

Any European country operating before the advent of their own continental competition in 1960 were obviously limited to the World Cup for tangible evidence of their power, which counts heavily against the Hungary team of the 1950s who many claim to have revolutionised the way the game was played.

HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION

Inspired by Ferenc Puskas, Hungary were undoubtedly the dominant force of their age and put together a run of 51 games over six years from 1952-56 with only one defeat. They won the 1952 Olympic football tournament and chalked up stunning 6-3 and 7-1 victories over England but that single blot on their record unfortunately came in the final of the 1954 World Cup when they lost to a West Germany side they had hammered 8-3 in the group stage.

The Hungarian Revolution two years later brought an end to the team and ended any realistic chance of claiming the World Cup win they needed to put them on the same level with the greatest teams of all.

Brazil then took up the mantle, winning the 1958, 62 and 70 World Cups, though only Pele featured in all three competitions. If that makes it difficult to consider the Brazil team of that era as one entity - and they had a 40-year barren spell in the Copa America to further undermine their credentials - then concentrating on the 1970 side is more fruitful territory.

JAYAPURA - A village chief was shot dead in Indonesia’s restive Papua province on Sunday, Indonesian military said, blaming separatists who are celebrating the founding of an independence movement.

Up to 30 gunmen had fired shots at village chief Johanes Yanafrom who was riding a motorcycle in Keerom district outside provincial capital Jayapura, Erwin Syafitri, commander of the Cendrawasih Military Command which oversees military operations in Papua, told reporters.

“He died on the spot after he was hit in the head and chest,” he said.

Indonesian military were quick to blame rebels from the pro-independence Free Papua Movement (OPM), which celebrated its 47th anniversary Sunday, for the latest attack. “The group comprised of 20 to 30 people and they were all armed with rifles. They are from the OPM led by Lambert Pekikir.

We believe they have escaped to the mountains and we are chasing after them,” he added.

Pekikir is the OPM commander in Keerom district.

Syafitri said the group also fired shots at a military patrol car, hitting the roof and side window and injuring a soldier.

The OPM separatists had also

raised four banned Morning Star flags in Jayapura and Wamena districts, he said. The OPM had called on their supporters to raise the Papuan flag as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Displaying separatist symbols such as the Morning Star is considered an act of treason in Indonesia under the criminal code and several perpetrators are serving 20-year jail terms for the offence.

Politics, law and security minister Djoko Suyanto condemned Sunday’s attacks and urged the security forces to arrest the perpetrators.

Gun attacks are not uncommon in the Papua region in the resourcerich region, where poorly-armed separatist groups have for decades fought a low-level insurgency for the mostly ethnic Melanesian population.

Since a German tourist was shot and wounded on a Papuan beach on May 29 by suspected separatists, seven civilians and a soldier have died in shootings and other violence, according to the human rights group Kontras.

SHANGHAI - Apple Inc has paid $60 million to Proview Technology (Shenzhen) to end a dispute over the iPad trademark in China that saw the world’s most valuable technology company engaged in a protracted legal tussle with a nearbankrupt Chinese firm.

Apple had said it bought ownership of the iPad trademark in various countries from Proview, once a global monitor maker, but the Chinese company argued the U.S. firm dealt with only one unit of Proview.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on Monday.

The iPad dominates China’s tablet PC market with more than 70 percent market share, though Lenovo Group Ltd’s Lepads and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s Galaxy Tabs have been gaining traction.

For Proview - which local media had said was seeking as much as 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion) from Apple - and its creditors, the settlement should be welcomed, some lawyers said.

The $60 million will be paid into a court-designated account and used to pay Proview’s creditors, said a source familiar with the situation. In March, Taiwan’s Fubon Insurance, one of several Proview creditors and a unit of Fubon Financial Holding Co Ltd, applied for bankruptcy proceedings against Proview because of $8.68 million in outstanding debt.

Sanur with the beautiful white sandy beaches and the famous Le Mayeur Museum are well known by tourists throughout the world. One of the icons for Bali tourism has been famous since the colonialism era.

At that time, the Netherlands army landed on Sanur Beach in 1906.

The beach also can be found in very old inscription about Bali’s history and also on an old stone writing of the Kasari Warmadewa King in 917 where now can be seen on the southern part of Blanjong, Sanur.

Then, the small village started to get its name among the foreign artists. In 1930, many foreign artists lived in Sanur, some of them were Katharane and Jack Mershon, dancers and photographer from US, Hans and Rolf Neuhaus who made art gallery in the fishermen village.

However, the most monumental artist ever stayed in Sanur obviously was a painter from Belgium, Andrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres.

Then, he married a woman from Banjar Kelandis, Ni Polok and stayed in the village since 1937.

The couple was the first to introduce Sanur Beach to the international world as a wonderful tourism destination.

As the time go by, Sanur changed

significantly. The transformation happened on the way of live of the inhabitants and the economics condition of Sanur. Many tourism businesses developed rapidly in the village.

Sanur developed into an icon of tourism village, well known by tourists throughout the world, especially after the establishment of Bali Beach Hotel in 1966. Before the hotel officially opened, the tourists stayed in Bali Hotel in Denpasar.

Sanur, consists of two main village, northern Sanur and western Sanur, as well as Sanur district, is a part of Denpasar Government. In the traditional division of village, Sanur divided into four areas, Sanur, Intaran, and Penyaringan.

Few locals even were accepted to work in the giant hotel. The head of northern Sanur Village, I.B Ketut Kiana, said “the establishment of Bali Beach Hotel in 1966 opened a new chapter of life for the people of Sanur.”

The tourism accommodation in Sanur actually had been existed since 1965 where a national cruise company opened bungalow on Sindhu Beach, Sanur by the name Sindhu Beach Hotel.

The hotel caught the local by surprise because they were not accustomed by staying near the beach.

However, after the development of tourism gave its benefit for the locals in the area, the transformation became even more obvious in Sanur.

The head of Indonesian Tour Guide Association (HPI), I Nyoman Kandia, said that Sanur is still one of the favorite destinations in

Bali even after other destination developed in the island.

“The tourism site is beautiful and has great historical value, two main things needed to become famous destination in Bali,” he added.

Kandia also said that the supporting facilities for tourism are also very complete in Sanur. In addition to hotels, other tourism businesses also develop in the area such as souvenir and handicrafts shops.

That is also including the entertainment industry which develops along with the tourism business.

Nowadays, fishermen seem to be forgotten by the people in Sanur and most of them turn to the tourism industry.

Unfortunetly, the development of Sanur in tourism is not being prepared properly. As Michel Picard wrote in his book “Bali, Cultural Tourism and Tourism Culture”, Sanur has no proper plan of development especially in tourism. MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s old rulers claimed victory in a presidential election on Sunday, ending 12 years in opposition after a campaign dominated by a sputtering economy and rampant drug violence. After pledging to restore order and ramp up economic growth, Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) had a clear lead over his rivals in exit polls and a “quick count” conducted by electoral authorities.

Although his main rival said it was too early to concede defeat, the 45-year-old Pena Nieto delivered a late-night victory speech to cheering supporters, and a senior electoral official said the PRI candidate’s lead was “irreversible”.

“Mexicans have given our party another chance. We are going to honor it with results,” a visibly moved Pena Nieto told followers packed inside the PRI headquarters in Mexico City.

MANILA, Philippines — A huge crocodile known as Lolong has brought pride, fear, tourism revenue and attention to the remote southern Philippines town where it was captured. And now it has claimed a world record, too.

Guinness World Records declared the giant, blamed for deadly attacks before it was captured last September, is the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity in the world.

The news sparked celebrations in Bunawan, a farming town of 37,000 in Agusan del Sur province, but Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said it also fostered concerns that more giant crocodiles might lurk in a marshland and creek where villagers fish.

“There were mixed feelings,” Elorde said by telephone. “We’re really proud because it proves the rich biodiversity of our place but at the same time, there are fears that Lolong may not be alone.”

Lolong has become the star attraction of a new ecotourism park and research center in the outskirts of Bunawan and has drawn thousands of tourists since

news of its capture spread. Elorde said his town has earned 3 million pesos ($72,000) from the modest entrance fees at the park, with most of the money being used to feed and care for the crocodile and maintain the park.

Lolong measures 20.24 feet (6.17 meters) and weighs more than a ton, Guinness spokeswoman Anne-Lise Rouse said in a statement seen Sunday. The reptile took the top spot from an Australian crocodile that measured more than 17 feet (5 meters) and weighed nearly a ton.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje welcomed the Guinness announcement and the growing attention for the crocodile, saying it would help people realize the biodiversity of their surroundings and the need to protect it. He said he would recommend that the government help Bunawan become an ecotourism destination.

The crocodile was captured with steel cable traps during a three-week hunt after a child was killed in 2009 and a fisherman went missing. Water buffalos have also been attacked by crocodiles in the area.

Windia also chairing the subak system research group of the Udayana University added that agricultural products could not compete in foreign markets because they had not been addressed seriously. Farmers, especially the younger generation, were reluctant to involve deeply in the agricultural sector.

They considered it less promising, so that conversion of farmland function, particularly in Bali, was increasingly out of control.

Meanwhile, in a separate location, the head of Indonesia Farmers Association (HKTI) of Bali, Prof. Nyoman Suparta, said that structural policies and the shifting of socio-economic values had resulted in the need for farmers to sell their farmland. Excessive development in the tourism, industrial, commercial and other sectors had become a great share for that compulsion. A study of Greenland’s rocks may have turned up something unexpected: the oldest and largest meteorite crater ever found on Earth.

Researchers think the crater was formed 3 billion years ago, making it the oldest ever found, said Danish researcher Adam Garde. The impact crater currently measures about 62 miles (100 kilometers) from one side to another. But before it eroded, it was likely more than 310 miles (500 km) wide, which would make it the biggest on Earth, Garde told OurAmazingPlanet.

The team has calculated it was caused by a meteorite 19 miles (30 km) wide, which, if it hit Earth today, would wipe out all higher life.

In the 3 billion years since impact, the land has been eroded down to about 16 miles (25 km) below the original surface. But the effects of the intense shock wave and heat penetrated deep into the Earth, and remain visible today, said Garde, a researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. Garde had been conducting research on Greenland’s geology and

noticed several strange features that didn’t make sense. One day in September 2009, he came up with the extreme explanation of an impact from a meteorite. His team collected samples over the years and published the results in the July issue of the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. He’s now “100 percent positive” it’s a crater, for several reasons, he said.

For one, he found widespread crushed rocks in a circular shape that seemed to be caused by the shock waves of a massive impact. Second, there are deposits of a melted mineral called K-feldspar (or potassium-feldspar) that could have been liquefied only at extremely high heat, like that caused by an meteorite’s crashlanding. There’s also widespread evidence of weathering by hot water, which he thinks was caused by the ocean rushing into the crater after it struck the area. It was based on the number of IVF and ICSI treatments recorded worldwide up to 2008, and estimates for the years thereafter for which confirmed figures are not yet available.

The data showed that about 1.5 million IVF and ICSI treatments are now administered around the world every year -- more than a third of them in Europe.

WASHINGTON — Using genetics, scientists have been able to dig up the dirt on why homegrown tomatoes taste so much sweeter than the ones in the supermarket.

Researchers found a genetic switch responsible for some of the sugar production within a tomato. A new study in Friday’s edition of Science found that the

common type of tomato bred for firmness and good shipping also inadvertently turns off the sugarproducing switch. That makes it less sweet and blander than garden varieties.

University of California Davis plant scientist Ann Powell said knowing the genetics behind the sugar-making could lead someday to development of sweeter tomatoes that also travel well.

Although the tax had been helped with subsidy, he said, it could not have given maximal contribution. “Ideally, there should be investors who are willing to buy the crops of farmers, but it is not easy to find them,” he said.

Headman of Jatiluwih, I Nengah Wirata, agreed if there were investors interested in

investing in his area. He hoped they could make the management of Jatiluwih more professional and create job opportunities for local residents, other than farming.

“We welcome any investors, but they must provide clear benefits for the community.

Do not only make us an object,” he said.

One of his suggestions was the purchase of farmers’ crop so that farmers would not be harmed by middlemen. This man also questioned about the relocation plan of Subak Museum to his territory.

DENPASAR - The Peace Generation Bali, the drugs care community in Bali province, has predicted that 1.3 percent of Bali’s population of about four million are suspected of being drug users.

“Most of the drug users are under 20 years of age,” Komsa Nursalam, a member of the Peace Generation Bali, said here on Sunday, adding that some of the drug users are school students.

Such condition is very alarming, so that the danger of being drug users should be publicized among the younger generation especially to the students, he said.

“Thus, we always share knowledge about drug abuse. To those who have become drug users, we suggest them to join rehabilitation measure,” Komsa Nursalam said.

In addition, those who have become drug users are urged to come to the Kuta Utara health centre and the Sanglah general hospital here.

Previously, hundreds of high school students in Sukabumi, West Java were suspected of being drug users, according to a non-governmental organization that works to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. “According to our data, there are 1.500 drug users in Sukabumi, and up to three percent of the figure are high school students, or about 5060 people,” said the organization`s Program Manager, Yudha Ilham Affandi, here on Wednesday (June 20).

According to Yudha, the organization believes that one in every ten students is a drug user.

The majority of students involved with drugs are using injection-types of drugs such as crystal meth, heroin, and morphine.

Furthermore, Yudha said that the organization is now holding a campaign to publicize the danger of using illegal drugs and narcotics.

Yudha also asked drug addicts to seek assistance from his organization, where they will not be reported to the authorities.

Recently Vice President Boediono called for an all-out war against drug-related crimes, saying they can destroy an individual, family, community, and even a nation.

Long traffic congestion happened to a number of road sections downtown Denpasar on Saturday (Jun 30). To avoid similar congestion, now the road body on Jalan Gajah Mada had been half opened after totally closed in conjunction with the installation of paving block. Nevertheless, some criticisms continued to flow in response to the closure on the first day.

Scathing criticism was revealed by a legislator of Denpasar House, AA Susruta Ngurah Putra. The people’s representative was once stuck in a very long and annoying congestion. “The congestion on last Saturday was incredible.

It should not happen if there had been coordination of relevant agencies,” said a member of Commission C in the Denpasar House, Sunday (Jul 1).

According to Susruta Ngurah Putra, the coordination should have been conducted by the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) as institution being responsible for the project with the Transportation Agency far in advance. As solution, he suggested to half open the Jalan Gajah Mada. It was taken to avoid very long traffic congestion. “Alternatively, Jalan Thamrin should be opened for two lanes so that

vehicles entering the Jalan Gajah Mada can be reduced. Therefore, they will not accumulate at one point as happened on Saturday,” he said.

When confirmed separately, the project leader of Jalan Gajah Mada paving block installation, Gede Cipta Sudewa, said that his party had evaluated after the long traffic congestion occurring on the first day or Saturday (Jun 30). He said that Jalan Gajah Mada totally closed earlier had been half opened. Related to the suggestion of opening the Jalan Thamrin for two lanes instead of one lane from the south, his party did not have the authority to do so. “It belongs to the authority of Transportation Agency. However, we still continue to coordinate with the Transportation Agency,” he said.

pasar Transportation Agency, Gde Astika, said there had been some anticipations associated with the congestion on Jalan Gajah Mada.

Firstly, he said, was directing vehicles to Jalan Gunung Kawi, Denpasar. Secondly, Jalan Thamrin was opened for two lanes leading to Jalan Imam Bonjol.

However, he said, the solution was not without a risk. As in the first alternative, if vehicles were directed to Jalan Gunung Kawi, then the traffic light on Jalan Sumatra should be turned on.

As consequence, it would trigger congestion on Jalan Sumatra.

Nevertheless, for certainty about the alternative would be discussed first on Monday. “Please do accept our apologies for this inconvenience and we also thank the community for their suggestion and criticism extended to us,” he said. (kmb13)

Execution of two projects in the heart of Denpasar, in the form of paving block installation on Jalan Gajah Mada and construction of basement parking lot on Jalan Sulawesi, reaped complaint from residents. It specially happened on Saturday (Jun 30) and caused the traffic flow on Jalan Gajah Mada truly crowded and jammed. Even, to pass through the intersection of Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Kartini it took them up to 40 minutes.

“It’s really crowded. Apparently, the municipal government never thinks of the impact of both projects in the heart of the city executed simultaneously,” said Adi, one of the road users on Jalan Gajah Mada revealing his complain to the editor of Bali Post via phone, Saturday night.

Adi admitted the crowdedness of traffic flow in the heart of Denpasar he lived through was inseparable from the installation of paving block and central parking construction. Ironically, he accused the project implementer seemed to have poor coordination with the Transportation Agency so the traffic congestion on the road section was getting worse.

“Why should the two projects be executed at the same time? Actually, they can be planned better by considering the smoothness of traffic flow in this area,” he complained.

Against the complaint, the technical executive officer (PPTK) doubling as the Division Head of Spatial Planning in the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP), I Gede Cipta Sudewa, confirmed on Sunday (Jul 1) that on the first day of paving block installation work the traffic flow arrangement was still on trial. At that time, the traffic flows to Jalan Gajah Mada Timur was totally closed. As a result, the congestion was unavoidable. “We’ve evaluated this matter because it was still on trial on Saturday,” he said.

Cipta Sudewa said by seeing the results of evaluation, his party had made a change to the traffic flow arrangement. Last Sunday, he said, the traffic flow remained to be half opened. In other words, vehicles could still use one lane and another lane was for project work. “From our observation in the field just now (Sunday—Ed), the traffic flow could turn smoother.

To be known the abrasion at Jumpai now reached 100 meters and have been going for a long time. The abrasion even reached nearby the pier project that was just built and have victimized one seaweed business where its walls have collapsed. What’s interesting the locals anticipate the abrasion by stating a fine will be given to outsiders including truck drivers and it’s workers who took sands from the shores as much as IDR 3 million. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Ted’ outstrips ‘Mike’ in big box-office weekend

LOS ANGELES — It’s both a bear and bull market for Hollywood.

The bear is “Ted,” Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane’s comedy for Universal Pictures about a talking teddy bear, which opened as the No. 1 movie with $54.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

And the bulls are baring it in the Warner Bros. release “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh’s male-stripper tale that debuted a strong No. 2 with $39.2 million.

The two new movies were backed by a deep bench, with Pixar Animation’s Disney fairy tale “Brave” holding up well at No. 3 with $34 million in its second weekend. “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection,” the latest from the dependable breadwinner

for Lionsgate Films, opened solidly at No. 4 with $26.4 million.

The four movies combined to keep Hollywood in the money compared to the same weekend last year, when “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” launched with $97.9 million.

“Ted’s” opening was the third-highest R-rated comedy debut, behind last year’s “Hangover 2” ($85.9 million) and 2010’s “Sex and the City 2” ($57 million), but it was the biggest ever Rrated non-sequel comedy opening.

It was an equally big weekend overseas, where two huge franchises got a head-start on their U.S. openings. The 20th Century Fox animated sequel “Ice Age: Continental Drift” opened with $78 million in 34 international markets, while Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” debuted with $50.2 million in 13 markets. “Amazing Spider-Man”

opens domestically Tuesday for the Fourth of July weekend, while “Continental Drift” has its U.S. debut July 13.

Domestic revenues totaled $207.7 million, up 3 percent from the same weekend in 2011, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

That was quite an accomplishment, considering the Fourth of July fell on Monday last year, making it a long holiday weekend.

“It was absolutely astonishing that we’re beating the same weekend a year ago given the enormity of the film, the big sci-fi blockbuster that opened then,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “This played out like a holiday weekend without it really being a holiday weekend. It speaks volumes about the importance of having a wide variety of films in the marketplace.”

Anticipation of terrorism, Bali Police to install two X-Ray scanners Bali Post

DENPASAR - Maintaining the security of Bali is not just the responsibility of police, but also the entire community. To that end, Bali Police asked for the support of society and government in order the security of Bali could be more conducive.

It was disclosed by Bali Police Chief, Insp. Gen. Budi Gunawan, when celebrating the 66th anniversary of Bhayangkara at the Bali Police Mobile Brigade Square, Sunday (Jul 1).
