Showered by rain, tourist boats unable to operate Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Persistent rain flushing the Bedugul lakeside tourist area caused the tourist boat services at the destination left by passengers. As a result, operators of the tourist boat were forced to stand idle.

They moored their boats on the lakeside dock. Since there were many boats, they finally crowded the lakeside dock.

Arbani, 45, a tourist boat owner said that persistent rain had flushed Bedugul since last week. Although visitors kept on coming, they could not enjoy the beauty of the lake by boat rides.

“I do not know what to do as the rain kept pouring. I am forced to stop renting the boats,” he said on Sunday (May 1).

Under normal condition, the boats rented could reach up to 5 units per day. A traditional rowing boat was rented at IDR 55,000 for 30 minutes and usu-

ally hired by 3-4 visitors. Meanwhile, the roofed boat was rented at IDR 127,000 and speed boat at IDR 102,000.

According to Arbani, visitors of the student circles preferred to rent a traditional rowing boat.

Apart from offering cheaper rental price, this kind of boat also gave a unique experience to them. They could sail around the lake with ease while rowing it slowly. On location, there were 16 traditional rowing boats operated by Arbani with his

friends.

He added the rain flushing Bedugul came erratically. Sometimes it rained in the evening and morning. However, last Sunday the rain kept on flushing the lakeside tourist object. At that time, he said there were actually many students visiting the tourist object. Because of rain, it was time for the umbrella rentals to get their blessings. In the rain, visitors had a promenade around the lakeside by using the rented umbrella. (udi)

Singaraja-Amlapura Route Still Not Fixed Driver Action, Cover Holes Together The drivers of Material Drivers Group (PSM) have been annoyed with the national route Singaraja-Amlapura route at at Tejakula Village, Bondalam Village and Les Village at Tejakula also Bukti Village at Kubutambahan were never taken care for years and so since Saturday (30/4) to Sunday (1/5) they took action by bringing

sands and pebbles to cover holes on the route helped by local residents causing some traffics on the route yet they also helped voluntary even gave donation.

According to one driver, Wayan Tiasa, from Bengkala Village, Kubutambahan, the narrow and wavy route is very dangerous to go through plus with the holes all over it as well causing trucks with materials hard to go through.

So they took the initiative to buy materials and work together as the responsible institute still hasn’t gave a date when they will fix it.

“We pass this road everyday and with these damages around still not fixed until now makes us to work together in fixing so,” he stated which agreed by another driver, Gede Tarsana, from Banjar Alas Arum, Pacung Village, Tejakula. As for geothermal, Bedugul residents ask for further studies Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Geothermal power project at Bedugul, Candi Kuning Village, Baturiti Subdistrict, Tabanan, is widely discussed by local residents. An issue came into view that it has been put into the top 10 national projects resumed this year. Related to this matter, local residents asked further studies, including in-depth socialization related to the impacts.

Village Head of Candi Kuning, I Made Mudita, said his party did not reject or approve the continuation plan of the geothermal drilling project. However, the residents expected the competent authorities related to the project could come down directly to community for providing socialization. “We would like to hear the results of the study regarding to the positive and negative impacts of the project, including studies in terms of spiritual perspective,” he said on Sunday (May 1).

So far, added Mudita, local residents had never obtained a direct explanation from the authorized party related to geothermal.

On that account, people remained in doubt associated with the mega power project. “Hopefully, a team of experts could come down to the community to provide an explanation. Similarly, clergyman should help provide a presentation on spiritual perspective,” he begged.

According to Mudita, as a village chief his party always supported the geothermal project if it was a government’s project. But his party expected a more profound study both technically and spiritually. The final choice would lie in the hand of Candi Kuning residents directly coming into contact with the project. Additionally, his residents also hoped there would be no political interest in addressing the

project.

Mudita added that residents of six hamlets in the village did not understand thoroughly about the geothermal project. They also worried if the project would have negative impacts on the environment such as collapsed ground, sulfuric smell and decline in the water discharge of the Lake Beratan. “This should be socialized to the community. Let them understand entirely,” he stated.

He also hoped there would be a team of engineers and higher priests coming down to the village to provide more in-depth study for the community.

If the project continued, said Mudita, his party planed to propose a number of agreements with the operators. Among them, his party would request shares for the village and local residents prioritized to work in the company. According to Mudita, the geothermal projects would be in direct contact with 7,000 residents inhabiting the Candi Kuning Village. So far, local residents had never been invited for a discussion related to the project. However, a number of village leaders and administrators had been invited to listen to the presentations of Pertamina and management of geothermal projects in the Bali House recently. But, residents had not been given the opportunity to speak on the occasion.

Similar opinion was disclosed

by a Tabanan legislator from Candi Kuning, Nyoman Suta.

This politician doubling as a former Hamlet Chief of Bukit1 said that geothermal project had been built since 2003-2004 period. However, up to these days, there had been no further activities. There were only security guards on duty at the location. “If it will be continued, there must be socialization. If required, it should be deployed a team of researchers getting in touch with residents,” said politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). Previously, six hamlets in the village of Candi Kuning had cohesively supported the project. Hopefully, with more in-depth socialization, residents could provide their support again.

So far he said there had been no notification from the project management and Bali Provincial Government related to continuation of the project plan. According to Suta, the circle of Tabanan House should ideally be involved in the discussion regarding to the continuation of the power plant project. “In essence, local residents are waiting for socialization on the results of more comprehensive study of the project. Furthermore, residents will determine their attitude,” he said.

As for the attitude of the House, the former Hamlet Chief of Candi Kuning had not dared to give a decision because it concerned with the institution. (udi)

Mysterious Luggage Found, Legian Street Closed Kuta, DenPost

The situation at Legian Street, Kuta, last Saturday (30/4) evening got tense as a mysterious luggage suspected bomb was found. Police then closed the route and causing party goers to go no near the area remembering bombs have hit Bali tourism area, Kuta, twice, as information stated last Sunday (1/5).

The luggage was first found by a tattoo maker at the stated street, Komang Wirama, around 5 pm local time. As the luggage was with no owner, he was suspicious as these days terrorism has been hitting Indonesia again. Komang

moved the luggage towards in front of his work place yet after an hour no one took it.

Komang then reported it to the Kuta Police which then Kuta and Denpaar Tourism police officers went down to location straight away and closed the busy route to prevent unwanted incidents.

Gegana Team then came to location after an hour to sterilize the luggage. One officer using an anti bomb suite came near the luggage to place an equipment on the luggage. “To make sure of what’s in it, Gegana team keep on checking and examining it. The equipment

they placed connects to a laptop so it’s detected what’s in it. The next thing they did was covering the luggage with steel covered textile and brought it to the Headquarters.

Legian Street was opened again since then,” Kuta Police officer explained.

Head of Kuta Police Gede Ganefo confirmed of this situation and have found out that there was no bomb in it. “As it was investigated, turns out the luggage was owned by a guest who was looking for a place to stay and have been taken back by the owner,” he explained. (109)

A ring of robbers targeting a bank customer, I Wayan Sudana Bima, could not have been detected up to right now. Moreover, Sudana who is no other than the car showroom owner was unable to identify the police plate of motorcycle used by the robbers. As planned, police would make coordination with Bank Mandiri to check the CCTV recording.

“We have just received the report and summoned our criminal detective unit to investigate the case. Maybe tomorrow (Monday), we are going to coordinate with Bank Mandiri to check the CCTV recordings,” said Chief of Criminal Detective Unit, Badung Police, Soma Adnyana, Sunday (May 1).

To date, Chief Soma added that his party remained to focus on the examination of witnesses, particularly witnesses around the scene. “The robbers were riding Honda Supra motorcycle and the victim felt safe because he was near his house. In fact, the robbers were desperate and attacked the victim. The victim sped from the bank and after near his home, the victim called the owner of car he wanted to purchase,” he said.

Previously, a customer of Bank Mandiri doubling as a car showroom owner, I Wayan Sudana Bima, 29, was robbed by four men armed with machetes at Menesa Hamlet, Darmasaba Village, Badung, around 10:30 a.m. Local Time, Friday (Apr 29).

The victim living at Darmasaba, Abiansemal, lost a cash worth IDR150 million. Not only that, the victim also suffered from swelling on the right cheek and back as well as injury on knees. The case was then reported to police station and the case is now being handled by Criminal Detective of Badung Police. (109)

Syrian army conducts widespread raids, arrests Associated Press Writer

BEIRUT – The Syrian army conducted raids in cities and towns across the nation Monday, arresting scores of people in an attempt to crush the uprising against President Bashar Assad’s regime, activists said.

Human rights activist Mustafa Osso said the army brought reinforcements to the western cities of Zabadani near the Lebanese border and the northern towns of Raqqa and Idlib.

“There’s heavy army presence and soldiers are conducting door-todoor raids,” he told The Associated Press. Osso said army vehicles in-

cluding tanks were also surrounding Zabadani. Assad is determined to crush the six-week-old revolt, which began in the now-besieged southern city of Daraa but quickly spread across the nation of some 23 million people.

The arrests are part of an intensified crackdown that followed massive anti-regime protests last week.

Rights groups say at least 545 Syrians have been killed since authorities began their crackdown on the uprising.

Now, the once-unthinkable protests are posing the most serious challenge to four decades of rule by

the Assad family in one of the most repressive and tightly controlled countries in the Middle East. As the arrests were being made, the Syrian military has intensified its weeklong assault on Daraa as residents, struggled to find food, pass along information and bury their dead.

A drought-plagued city near the Jordanian border, Daraa has been without water, fuel or electricity since last Monday, when the regime sent in troops backed by tanks and snipers to crush protests seeking the ouster of Assad. Syrian army tanks shelled the old quarter of Daraa on Sunday.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS – Investigators have located and recovered the missing memory unit of the flight data recorder of a 2009 Air France flight — a remarkable deep-sea discovery they hope will explain why the aircraft went down in a remote area of the mid-Atlantic, killing all 228 people on board.

France’s air accident investigation agency BEA said a search by a submarine probing 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) below the ocean’s surface located and recovered the unit Sunday morning.

The unit is now aboard the Ile de Sein, a ship that’s helping conduct the probe, the statement said.

The statement also included photos of the recorder — a red cylinder partially buried in sand on the sea floor. Judging from the photos, the unit appeared to be in good condition. Still, BEA officials have warned that the recordings may yet prove unusable, considering the pressure they were subjected to for nearly two years.

“We can’t say in advance that we’re going to be able to read it until it’s been opened,” a BEA spokeswoman told

Seif al-Arab, 29, was one of the least prominent of Gadhafi’s eight biological children, with no clear political or military power. He clearly tried to avoid rivalries as his siblings jockeyed for clout.

The cables described a brewing sibling rivalry that was expected to bode ill for Libya’s political transition ahead of the developing upheaval. The only daughter, Aisha, a lawyer in her midthirties, was also vying for a prominent role, often disagreeing with Seif al-Islam.

Anti-government protests resume in Maldives Associated Press Writer

MALE, Maldives – Anti-government demonstrators defied a heavy police presence Sunday to protest for a second straight night, demanding the ouster of Maldives President Mohamad Nasheed.

More than 3,000 people gathered at a main intersection in the capital, Male, to protest government inaction in controlling rising prices, alleged mismanagement and wasteful spending.

The protests resumed hours after police used tear gas and batons to break up a demonstration in Male that began Saturday night and continued into early Sunday. Organizers say about 5,000 people took part

in the earlier protest. Police had set up barricades and were ready with anti-riot gear.

Police spokesman Ahmed Shiyam said officers asked the protesters to leave but they started throwing objects at police, resulting in the clashes early Sunday. He said 10 people were arrested for damaging property.

Mohammed Shareef, a spokesman for the opposition Dhivehi Raithunge Party, said about 44 protesters were taken away by police, including two party lawmakers and leading activists. There was no independent confirmation of how many remain in detention.

Shareef insisted the protest was peaceful until police used force, saying seven people were injured

and one remains hospitalized.

The protesters are mainly upset over the government’s decision last month to allow the Maldivian currency, the Rufiyaa, to float against the U.S. dollar. A sudden devaluation of the currency has resulted in higher prices for essential commodities, most of which are imported.

Indonesia inflation slows in April Reuters

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s annual inflation slowed further in April as food prices eased, giving the central bank room to leave rates on hold again this month, though economists still expect a hike this quarter as core inflation picks up.

Analysts are pushing back or reducing their forecasts for rate hikes

by Bank Indonesia this year after the third consecutive month of slower headline annual inflation, which eased to a six-month low of 6.16 percent, below forecasts for 6.37 percent.

Core inflation — which excludes administered prices and volatile foods, but includes gold prices that reached a record high last week — picked up just ahead of forecasts to 4.62 percent year-on-year.

“This steady increase in core prices, suggesting that price pressures are becoming more rather than less widespread in the economy, should have the central bank thinking about lifting interest rates again after having only delivered one 25 basis points hike since the financial crisis, but it seems in no hurry and indeed keener to have the rupiah as the main guard against imported in-

flation,” said George Worthington, chief economist at IFR Markets in Asia.

Bank Indonesia has said it will let the rupiah strengthen to help reduce imported inflation. The currency was little changed after the data at 8,548 per U.S. dollar by 0600 GMT, having touched a 7-year high earlier in the day.

Fauzi Ichsan, economist at Standard Chartered, said the currency still had room for appreciation and could surpass the bank’s year-end forecast of 8,500 rupiah per dollar in the near term.

Most analysts see the central bank holding rates again in May after a surprise 25 basis points hike in February that was aimed at calming market worries after inflation peaked at 7 percent in January. However, analysts still forecast another rate hike may come as early as June or July.

“I think Bank Indonesia is just going to raise it once this year, in July to 7 percent, at a time when people are preparing for the Ramadhan fasting month,” said Anton Gunawan, economist at Bank Danamon in Jakarta.

Cooler inflation has helped investor confidence. Foreigners have re-

turned to buy Indonesian government bonds after a sell-off early this year, with net buying of 5.72 trillion rupiah ($663 million) last month, while the stock market is at a record high.

Bank Indonesia has said it remains in a tightening stance and there is room for further rate adjustments to manage inflationary pressures, but it remains less hawkish than many regional peers.

Thailand’s central bank is likely to hike its policy rate again at its next meeting on June 1, after data on Monday showed annual inflation at 4.04 percent in April, far higher than the 3.20 percent forecast by economists, due to a rise in food prices.

Thai annual core inflation, which excludes fresh food and energy prices, also jumped to 2.07 percent in April from 1.62 percent in March, and Thailand’s central bank uses this rate to guide monetary policy. Most economists expect a 25 basis point increase to 3 percent at the next meeting.

The Bank of Thailand said on Thursday it expected core inflation to go above its targeted range of 0.5 to 3.0 percent at some stage this year, but it forecast 2.3 percent for the full year.

When asked whether the release of the ship also involved military personnel who had been mobilized to free the vessel of PT Samudra Indonesia, he merely said that “everything is being done toward this end”.

In the meantime, foreign ministry‘s spokesman Michael Tene said he has yet to confirm the release of MV Sinar Kudus by the Somali pirates who had been hijacked since March 16, 2011. He said agreement on releasing the vessel was just between the ship‘s owners and the pirates.

Michael also cannot explain about payment of the ransom of 4.5 million US dollars, adding that such agreement was purely between the company and the pirates.

As reported by Reuters, the pirates had already released the Indonesian cargo ship after the owner paid the ransom.

MV Sinar Kudus had been hijacked by the pirates on March 16, 2011 about 512 kilometers north of East Socotra in the Somali waters with a crew of 31, including 20 Indonesians.

The pirates said they had freed the ship after the ransom had been dropped on them by the air.

“We received the 4.5 million US dollars ransom in the small hours of Sunday. We have left the ship and Sinar Kudus was set to start sailing,” one of the pirates who told Reuters his name was Geney from a coastal village of El Dhanane.

Former Kenyan marine official and currently editor of marine affairs The Somali Report Andrew Mwangura confirmed that the ship had been released, adding however

that they have yet to start sailing.

The families of 20 Indonesian sailors recently freed from the hands of Somalian pirates have expressed their appreciation to the government and shipping company PT Samudera Indonesia for having secured the release of their loved ones.

“A representative of the company (PT Samudera Indonesia), told me that there was good news.

He said the crew members, which had been held hostage by Somalian pirates, have been released. I am so happy that I could say anything,” Isti Karmiati (47), wife of Jhon, one of the released sailors, said here Sunday evening.

However, she had no idea when her husband would return to Indonesia.

Tiur Maida (33), the wife of another crew member, Irinus Nggotu (47), said she was looking forward to meeting her husband again.

“We cannot communicate because their communication tools have not been returned yet. But the company has assured us that all crew members are now in a safe place,” she said.

The two women expressed their gratitude to the company for their maximum efforts to release their husbands and other crew members.

“I also thank all people for their support and prayers,” Tiur said.

The 20 Indonesian sailors 2were among a total of 31 foreign ship crew members the Somali pirates released on Sunday. The Indonesians had been held hostage for 46 days since their ship, the MV Sinar Kudus, was hijacked in the Somali waters on March 16, 2011.

ASEAN Chief stresses importance of rights declaration drafting Antara

This Meeting was the second meeting of AICHR in 2011 chaired by the Indonesian Representative, Chair of AICHR Rafendi Djamin.

Dr Surin also underscored the role of AICHR and its significant contribution towards the achievement of an ASEAN Community in

2015.

The Meeting had discussed and adopted the Terms of Reference of AICHR’s Drafting Group for the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, Rules of Procedure for the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Fund and the terms of reference of the thematic study of baseline study on Corporate Social Responsibilities

and Human Rights in ASEAN. AICHR had also discussed and reached agreement on key elements of the Five-Year Work Plan 2012-2015 and the terms of reference for the thematic studies on Migration.

During the course of the AICHR Meeting, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister/Chair of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting Dr. Marty M. Natalegawa received the AICHR Rep-

She explained that based on the current rules about tourism, Bali Tourism Board (BTB) is planning to establish GIPI Bali. “GIPI is a transformation of BTB. In the future, we will be called GIPI as BTB in English,” she added.

The establishment of the first GIPI in Provincial level was also proposed

by Indonesian Cultural and Tourism Minister, Jero Wacik. He wanted that all provinces in Indonesia must have the similar organization.

Ingredients: 2 handful river snail, 250gram sabrang or cherry potato (peeled) and 800ml water for gravy.

BUSINESS Japan passes 4 trillion yen disaster relief budget Agence France-Presse

TOKYO – Japan’s parliament on Monday passed an emergency 4 trillion yen ($49 billion) relief budget to help fund reconstruction after the deadly March 11 earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern regions.

Ruling and opposition lawmakers put aside their differences in an effort to launch efforts to rebuild the country’s quake-hit northeast as quickly as possible.

But analysts warned the passing of the budget will not ease pressure on under-fire Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who has faced criticism over the government’s handling of the crisis and the subsequent nuclear emergency.

The extra budget, which totals 4.015 trillion yen, will cover restoration work such as clearing massive amounts of rubble and building temporary housing for the thousands of people who lost their homes.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami on March 11 left nearly 26,000 dead or missing and crippled a nuclear power plant, which has been releasing radioactive materials into the environment.

The nuclear accident and the natural disaster have forced the evacuation of more than 150,000 people from their homes.

The government will not issue fresh bonds for the extra budget but plans to

divert some funds originally aimed at supporting pensions and child allowances, while also slashing plans to cancel highway tolls.

Kan plans to submit a “sizeable” second extra budget later to be financed by a government bond issue.

But the prospect of more deficitspending has placed higher international scrutiny on the second extra budget, as such steps would further worsen Japan’s battered finances, amid calls for higher taxes to pay for relief measures.

Japan has struggled to whittle down a public debt mountain at around 200 percent of GDP, the highest level among industrialised nations.

Last week ratings agency Standard & Poor’s cut its outlook on Japan’s sovereign debt following the quake-tsunami disaster, citing the risk of a downgrade if Japan’s fiscal situation deteriorates more than expected.

It also warned that reconstruction costs could pass $600 billion. The top end of the government’s estimate of direct damage from the earthquake and the tsunami is at around $300 billion.

tween opposition and ruling parties delayed the passage of the regular budget for the fiscal year that started in April and prevented the enactment of crucial funding measures yet to clear parliament.

Japan’s unpopular Prime Minister on Sunday pleaded for public “understanding” after a poll showed threequarters of people questioned his leadership and handling of the crisis.

In a weekend telephone survey by Kyodo news agency, 76 percent of 1,010 respondents believed Kan was “not exercising leadership” in dealing with the March 11 quake and tsunami and the ensuing crisis at a nuclear power plant.

A senior nuclear adviser to Kan submitted his resignation Friday, and in a tearful press conference said the government had ignored his advice and failed to follow the law.

Toshiso Kosako, a Tokyo University professor who was named in March as an adviser to Kan, said the government had only taken ad hoc measures to contain the crisis at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

OMAHA – Warren Buffett does not spend his time making stock research recommendations, but he is sure of one thing — America should have a “strong buy” slapped on it.

Tens of thousands of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders who descended on Omaha this weekend for the conglomerate’s annual meeting got one unmistakable message from Buffett — no matter how bad the economy, or the deficit, or the political divide, the United States is as good a place to live and work as ever.

“I don’t see how anybody can be other than enthused about this country,” Buffett told Berkshire shareholders on Saturday.

Buffett, often called the “Oracle of Omaha,” is one of the world’s richest men and leads a conglomerate that owns railroads, insurers and ice cream parlors.

The comments echo those Buffett made in February in his annual shareholder letter, but the words still may encourage investors looking sideways at the country, particularly after Standard & Poor ’s put the U.S. government’s critical “AAA” credit rating on a negative credit watch.

Buffett told Reuters Insider that S&P’s move was premature, given the U.S. government issues debt only in dollars and can simply print more money to pay debt if absolutely needed.

“The United States is not going to default on any obligation,” Buffett told Insider in an interview after the annual meeting.

“We are not a credit risk, believe me.”

Where Buffett’s enthusiasm wanes to any degree, it is mostly in conversation on the dollar, which he said is sure to weaken over time, like most other currencies.

Buffett, as usual, said he was shying away from fixed-income investments for Berkshire’s part, even as he keeps some of his personal wealth in Treasuries for safety’s sake.

Some worry that safety could be threatened by the debate over the national debt ceiling, an issue that has divided Congress in recent weeks and gotten more tense as the country gets closer to its legal limit on debt issuance.

Buffett, asked about the possibility Congress would not raise the ceiling, made one of his mostrepeated comments of the whole weekend, saying it would be the legislature’s “most asinine act” in its history.

Buffett also affirmed his support for the banking sector, where he has big bets on Wells Fargo and U.S. Bancorp, calling the odds of another banking crisis “very very low.”

His partner, Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, was less sanguine about Europe and the effects of the sovereign debt crisis, saying the continent has “a hell of a problem” in comparison.

Price and her manager, husband Jeffery Rolle, began dressing the stage for her return three years ago when they relocated from Atlanta to Los Angeles. After the 2006 release of “This Is Who I Am,” Price continued performing, averaging between 200 and 250 dates per year. But the urge to return to writing — she had composed songs for R. Kelly, Wynonna Judd, Ronald Isley and Faith Evans, among others — and expand into film and TV began to take hold. That’s when her attorney suggested she move to L.A.

The group also burned a replica of the flag, considered a symbol of racism and oppression to blacks in the South. It was carried by secessionist Southern troops in the American Civil War. The dinner is the largest fundraiser for the Detroit NAACP branch. Civil rights pioneer John Lewis gave the dinner’s keynote speech.

LOS ANGELES – The first big budget film of the summer season, “Fast Five,” broke new records as it scored $83.6 million in its first weekend in theaters, industry estimates showed Sunday. WARSAW – Poland is dreaming of becoming a European shale gas El Dorado thanks to estimates of huge deposits, which if confirmed could make it an natural gas powerhouse and free it from energy dependence on Russia. “If early estimates are confirmed, it will be a revolution like in Norway or Great Britain after the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea,” Piotr Krzywiec, a geologist at Poland’s National Institute of Geology (PIG) told AFP in a recent interview. “Poland could become Europe’s number one or one of its largest natural gas producers,” he adds.

A recent US study, however, warned that shale gas carries a greater carbon footprint than oil, coal and conventional natural gas over at least a 20-year period due to emissions of methane — a greenhouse gas — in the extraction process known as “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing.

PIG expert Pawel Poprawa believes Poland has supplies of shale gas which could cover domestic needs “for the next 100, 200 or even 300 years.” Warsaw has long sought ways to guarantee its energy security and should the current flurry of prospecting produce proof of viable commercial deposits, Poland’s Soviet-era master Russia would lose its status as the country’s largest gas

supplier.

“This is Gazprom’s nightmare,” Newsweek’s Polish edition quipped recently of Russia’s natural gas giant. Currently, ex-communist Poland, a 2004 EU nation of 38 million people, covers 30 percent of its gas needs from domestic resources but Russian imports account for over 40 percent of consumption, with the rest coming from other countries.

Initial studies suggest the shale deposits run in a huge 650 kilometrelong (404 miles) diagonal belt across Poland, stretching from the northern Baltic Sea coast to the eastern border with Belarus and Ukraine.

Over the last two years, leading international fuel companies have descended on Poland with drilling

rigs to explore the possibility of commercial extraction. Poland has already issued nearly 90 exploration licences and the country’s liberal leader, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said he’s determined to see the “exploration and exploitation of shale gas in Poland become a fact.”

“If possible, we must exploit every cubic meter of shale gas,” he said.

However, serious environmental concerns have put the breaks on shale gas development elsewhere.

Fracking, the principle extraction method in shale gas production involves injecting massive volumes of water and chemicals into shale or sandstone deposits under high pressure to force out the gas, including methane.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – A childhood fascination with archaeology and a chance encounter with a 2,700-year-old Egyptian mummy are helping Vermont doctors and law enforcement officials find truth in some of the most challenging of modern-day crimes: the unexplained deaths of young children.

After spotting the mummy at the University of Vermont’s Robert Hull Fleming Museum in Burlington, Dr. Jason Johnson, a radiology resident, arranged to have it put through his hospital’s state-of-the-art CT scanner. He wanted to know about the life of what is believed to be the remains of an Egyptian servant girl of about 14 — and what led to her death.

What Johnson didn’t expect was that some of the scientific techniques used to reveal the mummy’s secrets would have other applications, including helping Vermont’s medical examiner and prosecutors determine if children who die in infancy are the victims of crimes.

The hospital’s CT scans helped doctors and UVM staffers create a full-size, three-dimensional model of the mummy’s skull — thanks to the latest technology and

the sharp detail obtained by cranking up the power on the scanner to levels unsafe for living patients.

That also helps in forensics by revealing patterns of injury in modern infant death cases that other scan techniques might miss.

“It made me feel good I came up with the protocol to work on the mummy,” said Johnson, 31, a fifthyear radiology resident at Fletcher Allen Health Care, the teaching hospital at the University of Vermont. “I never sat up at night thinking, ‘How can I save children from abuse?’”

Since the mummy was scanned in November, physicians working with the Vermont medical examiner’s office have started using the techniques on infant deaths, which average about one a month.

“It was tremendously helpful,” said Washington County State’s Attorney Tom Kelly, who used the information gleaned from a CT in a recent case to help determine the age of the bone breaks in a young abuse victim. The case, completed before the mummy technique was developed, has not been discussed in open court so he couldn’t give further details.

Johnson said that just as important as helping officials learn if a crime has been committed, the new techniques can help prove an infant’s death was natural.

SAN FRANCISCO – Google is the new darling of software wizards out to cash-in on the world’s love for customizing smartphones with fun, hip or functional applications. Developers once obsessed with “apps” for Apple’s hot-selling iPhones are touting creations tailored for smartphones built on the Google-backed Android platform.

“In the past seven months, Android has become the de facto second platform out there that people are developing for,” AppNation chairman Drew Ianni told AFP during the gathering of software entrepreneurs this week in San Francisco. “I think there is a general wait-and-see interest regarding platforms outside of Apple iOS and Android,” he added.

Mobile platforms being watched by developers include BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows Phone 7 and Hewlett-Packard’s webOS. Ianni expected smartphones based on Microsoft or HP software to increase in allure as they gain traction in the market.

“We need a third platform that is viable, otherwise it is going to be the Android show,” Urban Airship chief executive Scott Kveton said after taking part in an AppNation panel.

“Android is growing at a phenomenal rate,” he continued. “I’m afraid it is going to be Android running away with it.” Urban Airship provides tools that help developers make money from smartphone programs. Early in April the Oregon-based company added a feature allowing people to make purchases inside Android applications.

“Increasingly, people are finding it a good investment to build for Android and build for tablets and we are trying to support them,” Google director of mobile Americas Jason Spero said after an on-stage chat at AppNation. Android’s share of the US smartphone market has surged this year while BlackBerry’s sunk, according to recent figures from industry tracker comScore.

Android commanded a third of the market, while BlackBerry ranked second with 29 percent and Apple third with 25 percent, comScore reported.

Fergie fears split-second decisions in title race Agence France Presse

LONDON – Sir Alex Ferguson insists Manchester United paid the price for a refereeing error in the 1-0 defeat at Arsenal as the Premier League title race was blown wide open. Ferguson believes referee Chris Foy got it wrong when he failed to award an 88th minute penalty following Gael Clichy’s clumsy challenge on Michael Owen.

The United manager acknowledged Arsenal themselves had a good claim for a spot-kick turned down when Nemanja Vidic handled Theo Walcott’s cross in the first half.

But having seen Chelsea close the gap at the top to three points 24 hours earlier after benefiting from two dubious decisions in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham, Ferguson attempted to set the agenda ahead of the Blues’ decisive trip to Old Trafford on May 8.

The title race swung Chelsea’s way eleven months ago when Didier Drogba scored the winning goal despite being in an offside position in the corresponding fixture and Ferguson is anxious to avoid a repeat. “It’s too big a game not to get the decisions right,” Ferguson said. “It balances out in that respect but I think it was difficult to see that one (Vidic’s handball) but the one at the end, Clichy knew, he put his hands up in horror.

“Obviously, it gives Chelsea a major chance now and that’s what happens when you get these decisions. They (Chelsea) got one

at Old Trafford last season so that’s the worry now. “But in terms of ability - a game at Old Trafford, the supporters will be ready for it - and so will our players.”

Aaron Ramsey struck in the 56th minute to cap a period of Arsenal dominance and Ferguson admitted his side only found anything like their normal form in the final stages of the game. “After that we dominated and I think we deserved something,” he said. “I think we didn’t use the ball properly but once we lost the goal we were in their half most of the time.”

Arsenal now lie six points off top with three games remaining and manager Arsene Wenger refuses to call time on the club’s ambitions of being crowned champions. Their chances will be improved if Chelsea beat United and Wenger admitted he would be backing Carlo Ancelotti’s side when the top two meet.

“I have not given up all hope because we will fight until the last second of the season,” he said. “We have been unlucky this season.

Let’s hope we have better luck in the last three weeks. The best po-

sition remains Manchester United and second best is Chelsea because they have to play United next week.”I still make United strong favourites because when you play at home for the title you have still an advantage.

“If we want to have a small chance it is in our interests for Chelsea to win and for us to win our games. Then it’s mathematically possible. But I still say United has the advantage.”

Wenger admitted his side’s recent failings were still likely to prove costly and he pin-pointed their previous three games as the moments when their bid faltered.

“Last week, at Bolton, against Liverpool when we were 1-0 up in the 97th minute and we were 3-1 up against Tottenham,” he said. “If we do not win the championship, we could have made nine points from these games and we would have been ahead of United.”

Samir Nasri came off at halftime with a hamstring strain while Cesc Fabregas missed the game with a thigh problem but both should be available to face Stoke next weekend.

BERLIN – The tactics of Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid against Barcelona last week came under more fire Monday from Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, twice a Champions League-winning manager with Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

UEFA on Thursday announced it had launched a disciplinary inquiry into events surrounding Wednesday’s unruly Champions League semifinal tie between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

One of the incidents being investigated is Mourinho’s postmatch outburst in which the Portuguese coach suggested referees always showed favouritism to Barcelona, who won 2-0 in Madrid to take a huge step towards the final.

“Luckily, Mourinho’s de-

structive tactics, aimed solely at provoking and destroying the opponents’ gameplan, did not work,” Hitzfeld wrote in German football magazine Kicker. “Such a way of playing does not relate to the demands of Real, it’s really shameful for Real Madrid.

It harms the good name and image of this legendary club.”

Hitzfeld, just one of only three coaches to have won the Champions League with two different clubs — along with Mourinho and Ernst Happel, did not hide his disdain for the Portuguese coach.

“I’ve met him at UEFA meetings and his behaviour is faithful to his image: arrogant, haughty, chewing gum and somewhat of a boor.

“Barca should make him pay on the pitch,” he said in reference to Tuesday’s return leg of the semi-final.

Round 1 to Wade and the Heat, 99-90 over Celtics Associated Press Writer

MIAMI – Dwyane Wade knew his regular-season numbers against Boston were lacking. He also knew that wouldn’t matter in the playoffs. And Game 1 — which seemed more like Round 1 — of what’s already an emotionally charged series went to Wade and the Miami Heat.

Wade scored 38 points on 14 of 21 shooting, James Jones set a Miami postseason record with 25 points off the bench, and the Heat beat the Celtics 99-90 on Sunday to open their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

“We’re going to have to fight for every inch, every game we get,” Wade said. “Right now, we won Game 1. We’re supposed to.

We’ll go back and focus on winning Game 2. We’re at home, we have home-court advantage.

They’re just trying to come in and

steal one like they’ve done in the past. So it’s our job to come out with the same mentality in the next one.”

LeBron James finished with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists for Miami, which led by as many as 19 before a fiery finish that saw plenty of players jawing at each other — more than that in some cases. Paul Pierce was ejected with 7 minutes left, after picking up two technicals in skirmishes with Wade and Jones within a span of 59 seconds.

Ray Allen scored 25 points for Boston, which lost for the first time in five games this postseason. Pierce scored 19 and Delonte West finished with 10 for the Celtics, while Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett were held to a combined 14 points on 6-for-19 shooting.

“There’s so many things we need to do to get better,” Allen said. “I think everybody in that locker room knows that, just from a small conversation we just had.”

Game 2 is Tuesday in Miami.

Del Potro wins Estoril tennis crown Agence France Presse

ESTORIL, Portugal – Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro won his first claycourt tournament in 22 months with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Fernando Verdasco at the Estoril Open on Sunday. The victory was the second of the season for the 2009 US Open champion, who missed 10 months of 2010 as he recovered from surgery on his right wrist. Del Potro last played on clay at the 2009 French Open but he

showed that he had lost none of his touch on the surface.

He claimed his ninth title, from 12 final appearances, to improve his winloss record for the season to 25-6 and become the first Argentine to win the Estoril title since David Nalbandian in 2006.

“This is a great victory, it’s unbelievable to win on clay. It’s something I never expected so soon,” said the champion. The big Argentine said that while his wrist is not yet at 100 per-

cent, it is not a bother to him on court.

“It’s almost fine, it’s getting better.

When the weather is humid I feel something, But the doctors say that’s normal. It’s getting better faster than we expected.

“I’ve stopped worrying about my injury. It’s just a little pain, but it does not stop me wanting to win. That’s more important than any pain.”

Despite his loss, the week was also a success for Spain’s second-seeded Verdasco who had lost in four of his

five previous tournaments in opening matches. The Spaniard is fighting to rescue a ranking which dropped him from the Top 10 to 15th. Sunday’s loss left his record in finals at 5-10.

Del Potro dominated in the opening set, winning it in 32 minutes after running away to a 5-1 start. But Verdasco began to find his range in the second and despite starting it by going down a break managed to keep Del Potro at bay.

The Argentine was tested in the final game, with Verdasco saving a pair of match points and forcing his opponent to salvage a break point.

But del Potro finally took victory on his third winning chance. “He played better and that is why he beat

me by the scoreline today,” said Verdasco. “He played great. I didn’t have many chances to put him in trouble. It was hard, he was hitting the ball hard and deep. It was difficult to be offensive. I didn’t play my best.

“I hope to finish in the Top 10 at the end of this year. After Roland Garros I will have almost nothing to defend, so I hope to pick up points at Wimbledon and other tournaments.”

Both men will travel immediately to Madrid where the Masters 1000 has already started.

Del Potro faces a first-round match with 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny while Verdasco plays as 15th seed with a start against Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun.

Australian Evans wins Tour de Romandie Agence France Presse

GENEVA – Australia’s Cadel Evans won the Tour de Romandie here on Sunday after the fifth and final stage was claimed by Team Sky’s British rider Ben Swift.

It was a second overall victory for the Australian BMC team rider after his previous success in 2006, and he admitted to feeling comfortable on Swiss soil.

“It’s a race I like, I’m alway happy to win here,” said Evans.

“It’s important for us to make a good impression on home ground but also in terms of look-

ing towards the Tour de France and other races of the year.

“Now I keep working towards the Dauphine but really my first objective is the Tour de France.”

Evans finished 18sec ahead of German HTC-Columbia rider Tony Martin, with Kazakh Alexandr Vinokourov of the Astana team in third. The final stage was won by Swift in a sprint finish.

“It was perfect, I really like the course this year,” Swift said.

“I sensed I’d be climbing quite well this year. My team did a brilliant job, they guided me the whole day, they protected me.”

Pedrosa ecstatic to prove fitness Dani Pedrosa said that knowing his recent arm issues have been resolved was possibly even more satisfying than winning the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The Honda rider had surgery between the Jerez and Estoril races to remove a plate inserting on his collarbone following his Motegi practice crash last year, which had begun to cause him to lose feeling in his arm during races.

Yesterday he was concerned that as he was still healing, he might lose pace during the grand prix. But instead he was able to keep the pressure on Jorge

Lorenzo all race, overtake the Yamaha with four laps to go, and then pull away.

“Of course the race win is super but I can tell you when I was with Jorge and the laps were going on, I was just smiling inside because I was so happy about my arm,” said Pedrosa. “Okay, I had muscle pain, but no numbness and no problem.

I was thinking ‘if I finish second in this race I am more than happy be-

cause it looks like the problem is gone’.

“So I’m super-happy. The race was amazing. “Jorge put in a very strong race and he made it much more interesting.”

Pedrosa said he owed the victory to the medical team that had worked with him prior to the race.

“Thanks to all the doctors and all the physios who helped me to be here fit, even with some pain, but thanks to all of them,” he said.

Simoncelli blames cold tyres for crash MARCO Simoncelli said cold tyres were the cause of his first-lap crash in the Portuguese Grand Prix, and is confident he would have been a victory contender had he kept going.

After a breakthrough weekend in which he dominated practice and came close to a maiden MotoGP pole before crashing and having to settle for second, Simoncelli’s race ended in disaster just four corners into the opening lap, when he had a violent high-side.

The Italian was adamant that he had done little wrong and that the crash was due to extremely low tyre temperatures. “I’m so sorry for this crash because today we had the potential to fight for the podium and

for the victory,” Simoncelli told the official MotoGP website.

“I did maybe a little mistake. But I think the fault is of the cold tyre on the left side, because in the exit of Turn 1 we inclined the bike a little bit on the left on acceleration and there for the first time I lost the rear.

“So in the other corners I paid attention, especially in Turn 4, I did the corner with one gear higher to have the bike more neutral and smooth but in the middle of the corner, without throttle, I crashed.

There was nothing I could do.” He was still upbeat about his weekend, saying it had been more important to show he was quick enough to fight at the front.

“I’m so sorry for me, for my

team, but this is racing,” said Simoncelli. “The good thing is that I’m fast and our potential is high, and we’ll try to do better in the next race.”The Gresini Honda rider admitted that the accident had been a painful one.

“I have a little bit of pain in my back, and also some problems with my neck,” he said. Simoncelli’s weekend was also notable for a public row over with Jorge Lorenzo over on-track ethics during the postqualifying press conference. The Italian said the tension between them would remain.

“With Lorenzo, nothing changed,” Simoncelli said. “I didn’t speak with him before and I’ll continue with not speaking.”
