NEW YORK — Mary J. Blige, John Legend and Marc Anthony kicked off the American football championship Super Bowl weekend in style by serenading a celebrity-filled crowd in Manhattan. Hundreds of New Yorkers and visitors packed into Cipriani’s 42nd Street on Friday night for a party sponsored by Shape and Men’s Fitness magazines. Tickets cost $2,500 per person.

Blige opened the show and had many in the crowd ignoring their dinner by the end of her energetic set, which included hits like “I’m Goin’ Down,” ‘’Good Woman Down” and an impassioned rendition of “No More Drama” that brought the crowd to its feet. Serenading a swanky Manhattan crowd, Legend said he never thought he’d see the day a Super Bowl came to New York City.

The three performers each chose a charity to receive funds: Legend chose the Show Me Campaign, which works to give children access to quality education; Blige chose the Mary J. Blige Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now Inc.; and Anthony chose Maestro Cares, which works with orphaned children in Latin America.

48 kilometers of beach in Buleleng hit by abrasion Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Coastal territory of Buleleng has continued to be besieged by abrasion recently. Even, when entering the season of bad weather lately, condition of the abraded coastal area worsened. So far, the abraded area occurred approximately along 48,262 kilometers of the total length of coastal territory in North Bali reaching 157 kilometers.

The Head of Buleleng Public Works, Putu Yasa, when contacted confirmed that the coastal territory of Northern Bali continued to be beset by abrasion and getting worse. Yasa said the most severe abrasion occurred on Hepi Beach, Tukadmungga village, Buleleng.

The beach taken advantage for tourist area abraded along about one kilometer from the end of the breakwater of Hotel Baruna towards the west to coastal area

of Anturan village, Buleleng. The beach was abraded due to tidal wave disasters occurred a few years ago. When entering the season of bad weather lately, the condition of abraded area was getting worsened. “The Hepi Beach indeed has been abraded and it is getting worsened in this bad weather condition. We still continue to make data collection while monitoring, so the data of the abraded area will become clear,” he said.

In addition to Hepi Beach at Tukadmungga, the Penimbangan Beach is also in severe enough abrasion. However, the affected beach is only 50 meters long.

The most severe damaged beach occurred just north of the Penimbangan Temple. The breakwater having been installed since a few years ago are now destroyed after being hit by tidal waves.

Seth Meyers off ‘Saturday Night Live’ for new job

NEW YORK — Seth Meyers has departed “Saturday Night Live,” just weeks before he begins his new job as host of “Late Night.” Meyers co-anchored “Weekend Update” on the NBC sketchcomedy series for eight seasons and was joined for his farewell newscast by “SNL” alumni Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen.

They told Meyers they had come to take him “to the other side.” Meyers called his “SNL” tenure “the job I always wanted.” He joined the cast in 2001. He’ll take over at NBC’s “Late Night” on Feb. 24. “SNL” head writer Colin Jost will replace Meyers at the “Weekend Update” anchor desk alongside Cecily Strong. He signs on March 1.

Tourist information board rundown Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Supporting tourism facilities at Lovina seems to get less maximal touch of maintenance by local government. As proof, the tourist information board established at roadside of Singaraja-Seririt, precisely at Kalibukbuk village, Lovina, looks in apprehensive condition. Even, the pole of the board almost collapses and the roof is leaking. Not surprisingly, such condition is often complained by travelers visiting Lovina.

Embankment collapses, ring road at risk of being disconnected SEMARAPURA - The damage of embankment along the coastline of Nusa Penida has been getting severer. After destroyed, a serious abrasion now starts to erode the highway. For instance, the ring road leading to Mentigi Market, Mentigi hamlet, Batununggul village, has already been damaged as hit by tidal waves. Moreover, the road composed of land and limestone is very easily destroyed by the wave brunt.

The ring road is very busy with daily activities. Its location near the Mentigi Public Market is frequently complained by residents. It has been going on since the past two years. Lately, the damage is getting

severer because the row of levees previously protecting the road has also collapsed and even destroyed.

Asphalt layer looks to have come off and has lots of big gaping hole.

Almost along the shoreline at this village, the levees built of limestone have been destroyed and need to be fixed immediately.

Last week, a number of regional working units (SKPD) checked the condition directly. Location being not far from the Mentigi Harbor also made the relevant agencies to immediately address the issue seriously.

Chief of Dalem Setra Batununggul customary village, I Dewa Nyoman Yusa, had also complained about the damage to the embankment at Batununggul village. It was one of

the road accesses and alternative for residents to perform activities crossing the villages. “I worry if it is not immediately repaired the road access can be broken and the activities of people will also get disturbed,” he said.

Since long time ago the Nusa Penida subdistrict has been besieged by abrasion. The district is the most seriously affected. Based on the data of Public Works, among the 13 existing beaches, a total of 13,550 meters had been affected by abrasion and had not been handled yet. Most shoreline damages occurred to Sental Beach and Suana Beach. Of the length of the Sental Beach reaching 18,000 meters, along 4,500 meters had not been handled. Similar condi-

tion also happened to Suana Beach.

The damaged happened to 4,000 meters of the total length of 15,000 meters and the area was also prone to abrasion. Overall, along 18,850 meters of the beach in Nusa Penida were very prone to abrasion. Meanwhile, the handled area only reached 9,129.96 meters.

The Head of Klungkung Public Works, A.A. Ngurah Agung, said on Friday (Jan 31) the damage to the road of Batununggul village would be fixed soon through the routine maintenance budget worth IDR 400 million. In addition to Batununggul village, the other road damage also occurred in Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, physical activity of road improvement for road improvement

in Nusa Penida as a whole had been allocated as much as IDR 3.5 billion.

A resident who lives near the tourist information board said on Friday (Jan 31) that it was built at roadside by local authority a few years ago. It was usually used for placing tourist activities announcement at Lovina and as a promotional tool for the management of hotels and restaurants. Surprisingly, the facility was left in poor condition. Even, the poles looked oblique and almost collapsed. The roof collapsed and the board ragged after being stuck with brochures and posters. No wonder such condition was often complained by travelers. They were disappointed because the tourist information board was vile and rundown. “It’s been long not repaired whereas travelers often complained about the condition of the tourist information board almost collapsing,” he said.

Other than tourist information board looking in apprehensive condition, the signpost name of Kalibukbuk village right at the entrance into Lovina Beach had also been left in damaged condition since few years ago. Building of the village name signpost made of concrete has long collapsed. No one knows why it collapses. Chunks of the concrete are now left strewn over the pavement. Again, the debris harms the beauty of Lovina having been well known as an international village.

Residents who saw such condition admitted to be disappointed as the government deliberately ignored the destruction of the supporting facilities at the Lovina tourist attraction. They hoped that technical agencies in charge could pay attention to such condition and provide relief fund to repair the damage. (mud)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MECHANICSBURG, Ohio — A motorcycle-loving man’s family has fulfilled his dying wish — to be buried astride his beloved Harley-Davidson encased in a see-through casket. But it wasn’t easy.

The project required an extra-large cemetery plot to accommodate a Plexiglas casket for Billy Standley and his hulking custom-painted 1967 Electra Glide cruiser. Five embalmers worked to prepare his body with a metal back brace and straps to ensure he’ll never lose his seat.

Standley’s family said he’d been talking about it for years and liked to take people to the garage to show off the unusual casket his two sons had built for him. He told people he didn’t just want to ride off to heaven, he wanted the world to see him do it in the big seethrough box. “He was a quirky man,” daughter Dorothy Brown said.

“But when it comes to us kids, he loved us, he raised us well and, of course, we wanted to help him.”

The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/1dS4hsq ) reported that Standley, of Mechanicsburg, west of Columbus, died of lung cancer Sunday at age 82. He was buried Friday.

Newspaper photos of the prepared casket showed Standley with his eyes closed astride the big bike. He was dressed in black leathers, a white helmet and glasses, his gloved hands grasping the handlebars.

Standley told his family his motorcycle helped him retain his sense of adventure after he settled down to raise four children, which was quite a compromise for the man who made his start at 13 as ranch hand and rodeo rider.

MOHENJODARO, Pakistan — Folk dancers and singers wearing traditional multicolored dresses took the stage Saturday at one of the world’s most ancient archaeological sites in southern Pakistan for a festival that organizers say aspires to promote peace in a nation where political violence has left some 40,000 dead in recent years.

fear the stage and other event infrastructure could damage the delicate mud ruins. “It is nothing but insanity” says archaeologist Asma Ibrahim, who is a member of the Management Board for Antiquities and Physical Heritage of the Sindh government. She says the stage and sound and light show could damage walls.

But organizers say there is no risk to the ruins. “There is no risk to Mohenjodaro because of the festival. Rather, it was never decorated the way we have done now,” Soomro said. He said he supervised arrangements for the festival to make sure no harm was caused to the site.

Zardari visited the site Thursday and said every step was being taken to protect it, and people would not be allowed to roam freely over the ruins.

Agrotourism development not worked on seriously Bali Post

DENPASAR - Many circles assess that tourism development in Bali has gone too far and sacrificed the agriculture in Bali as indicated by farmland conversion for the benefit of property or tourism supporting facilities. Actually, said a member of the House of Representative, Commission IV, in charge of the agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forestry, AA Good Jelantik Sanjaya, the agriculture of Bali with the socio-cultural life in it had become one of the important elements or factors that supported tourism.

If the agriculture of Bali collapsed, the tourism would collapse as well. On that account, there should be a continuous effort to synergize the agriculture and tourism where one of the ways was through the development of agrotourism.

“Unfortunately, the development of agro-tourism in Bali stays to get less serious attention from the government whereas the potential is huge,” said Jelantik Sanjaya.

pursuant to the characteristics and their agricultural potential posed the appropriate development models to support the cultural tourism development model echoed all this time and could alleviate the gap between the tourism and agricultural sector.

In the future, this agrotourism should be expanded and integrated with social and cultural life of our farmers,” he said.

Jelantik Sanjaya pointed out the development of ecotourism in the context of organic farming.

For example, travelers could be invited to see the processing of cow dung into compost or the packaging of organic vegetables or fruits.

In the context of subak as part of the agrotourism, for example, he said, travelers could be invited to see how the awig-awig or bylaw of the subak was applied and how the Tri Hita Karana concept was implemented in the farming life, especially concerning with the religious ceremony.

“Agrotourism must be made into a single package or attraction to travelers so as to give the impression if the organic farming has been populistic and involved in the region such as in the Jatiluwih region. There will be no longer company that is only looking for their own benefits but how the profits of

this agrotourism can be earned by people at the village concerned,” he said.

He added if the government was serious about building the agriculture and had a good will to synergize the agriculture and tourism it should give attention and a great support to the development of agrotourism. For example, it could fix or set up a good road infrastructure to the agrotourism destination, help educate and assist farmers in the agrotourism management, promotion and marketing. “The institution of farmer also plays a major role here so there will be no post-harvest losses due to middlemen tricks. Here, the government should facilitate the processing of the agricultural products to enhance the economic value as well as guarantee the marketing and other aspects,” he said. (kmb29)

Benazir Bhutto was killed in a 2007 gun and bomb attack widely blamed on Pakistani Taliban and Bilawal has made opposition to militancy a pillar of his platform.

As observation at the Tri Dharma Chinese temple at TITD Seng Hong Bio, the pilgrims thronged the temple with their children and families.

One of the pilgrims named Kadek Darsana, 35, said that ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration at this time he prepared an offering to the ancestors. “In this year’s celebration, I offer lunar fruits such as grapes, rambutan, dragon fruit and typical pastries of Chinese New Year,” he said on Friday (Jan 31).

In line with the other pilgrims in the TITD Seng Hong Bio, Jenny S., 50, from Seririt, said she came with her family to the temple to invoke blessings. “Our family along with children hopes that we can be bestowed with the mercy of luck and health without lacking of nothing,” she said.

At different location in the TITD Ling Gwan Kiong were seen hundreds of pilgrims to flock the place of worship alternately. According to Harmini, more Chinese-descendant pilgrims came to pay homage in this Chinese New Year than previous years. “Atmosphere of the Chinese New Year this year seems more festive and crowded. My grandchildren come together to pray in order to be blessed and given a safety this year,” she said.

Most pilgrims come from the Pupuan, Busungbiu and Banyuatis area.

Lien Wiek, 63, the temple guardian explained the weather this year was very bright and the pilgrims were very happy to come to temple. “Last year’s celebration was flushed by rain, but now the weather is very sunny in Singaraja. The TITD Ling Gwan Kiong is fairly old established in 1873 and it has significant meaning to Chinese-descendant people in Singaraja and surrounding areas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Ceng Eng Sing, 78, added that he would continue to preserve the temple with young people and communities. This Lunar year was expected to be a source of fortune and strengthen the Chinese-descendant people from various parts of Indonesia. “We are concerned to preserve this temple. The atmosphere each year is also getting crowded, so we are more encouraged when Chinese New Year comes. The Chinese New Year 2565 this time is graced with the arts and cultural acculturation by featuring the art of Gong Kebyar from the hamlet nearby. It is intended to make the atmosphere of the Chinese New Year celebration more festive and crowded,” he said. (dgk)

TABANAN - Rainy season turns out to be a bad omen for tile artisans in Tabanan. It happens because the quality of product yielded highly depends on the weather. When the production is forced in the current unpredictable weather, it is worried to kindle the loss of quality.

As stated by Made Sudarta, a tile craftsman from Pangkung hamlet, Pejaten village, Kediri, Saturday (Jan 31), the long rainy season was considered to absolutely hamper the production process. If forced, it was feared the quality of tile production which so far had already been

well known by the public would be tarnished.

According to him, heat of the sun became an important part of tile drying process. Since wet clay posed the main material of tile, it required the storing phase by placing it in the home yard under sun light before

the burning process.”Therefore, the current rainy season make us difficult to dry the tiles because it lacks of sunlight.

In normal weather, the tile manufacturing process can produce 9,000 pieces within a week, while if the weather is like this time the process even reaches up to 3 weeks,” he explained. Quite often, he added, when drying tiles in the yard and it suddenly rained many tiles would be exposed to rainwater and caused them to be damaged.

almost the entire community was getting involved in the industry of tile, ceramic, iron crafts, candles and various other crafts. Such business had become the backbone of local economies.

Similarly, most population of the neighboring village, Nyitdah, also had livelihood as a tile craftsman.

Rainy season as today was a barrier in itself because their drying process remained to rely on nature and highly depended on the weather such as the drying of tiles under the sunlight.

Such condition was also experienced by a brick maker, Nyoman Darsa, 45. According to him, his brick production would be faltered in rainy season due to lack of sunlight. In order to dry, he had to wait until a few days. “Both brick and tile equally need the heat of sunlight because when stored in the furnace can also speed up the drying process of brick. But when rainy season arrives we can do nothing and have to wait for a few days in order the brick can dry,” he concluded. (kmb28)

The theft incident occurred due to weak security system in the YH. At the time of the incident, the gates of YH were not closed. In addition, the compound wall around the YH was not too high or about 1.20 meters. More ironically, room of the victim was not locked and no security guards were in charge.

Therefore, such condition provided

convenience for the culprit to take away the belongings.

Currently police were making elaborate investigation on the theft case by collecting more data.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The African Union urged its members to “speak with one voice” to prevent criminal proceedings at the International Criminal court against sitting presidents, according to a statement Saturday.

The 54-nation organization said it was disappointed that a request to the U.N. Security Council to defer the trials of Kenya’s leaders “has not yielded the positive result expected.”

The African Union also has sought the deferral of criminal proceedings against Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, who has been charged with genocide in Darfur.

Only Botswana has opposed the stand taken by the African Union, made in a statement received Saturday after a summit in Ethiopia attended by 34 leaders.

“African states parties should comply with African Union decisions on the ICC and continue to speak with one voice,” the statement said, adding “There is an imperative need for all member states to ensure that they adhere to and articulate commonly agreed positions ...”

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto face charges of crimes against humanity at the inter-

national court at The Hague for allegedly orchestrating postelection violence that killed more than 1,000 people following a disputed presidential election in late 2007. Both men deny the charges.

The International Criminal Court has recently come under strong criticism from African leaders who accuse it of racism in indicting only Africans. Countries such as Uganda have suggested they may decide to sever ties with the court in solidarity with Kenya. Some Africans also argue that the Kenyan leaders need to concentrate on governing their countries to ensure stability as the region faces unprecedented terrorist challenges.

Ruto’s trial continues at The Hague but the case against Kenyatta may collapse. Kenyatta’s trial was to start in November but was postponed to February after the prosecution and defense teams said they needed more time to prepare. The prosecutor in December asked for an additional three-month adjournment after one witness withdrew and another said they gave false evidence.

A Kenyan court on Friday refused to stop the arrest of a journalist wanted by the international court for allegedly interfering with prosecution witnesses in the case against Ruto.

BANGKOK — Protesters trying to derail Thailand’s national elections Sunday forced the closure of hundreds of polling stations in a highly contentious vote that has become the latest flash point in the country’s deepening political crisis. Around the country, the vast majority of voting stations were open and polling proceeded relatively peacefully. Polling stations closed for the day with no reports of violent clashes, easing fears of bloodshed a day after gun battles in Bangkok left seven people wounded.

The national focus was riveted to the capital where 488 of the capital’s 6,600 polling stations were shut and several skirmishes broke out between protesters intent on disrupting the vote and frustrated would-be voters. The Election Commission said the closure of polls affected more than 6 million registered voters.

In some cases, protesters formed blockades to prevent voters from entering polling stations. Elsewhere, protesters blocked the delivery of ballots and other election materials, preventing voting stations from opening. The Election Commission said that hundreds of polling stations in the south, an opposition stronghold, faced similar problems. Angry voters at one Bangkok district stood outside of closed voting stations waving their identification cards and shouting “Election! Election!”

“We have the right to vote.

You don’t have the right to take

that away from us,” said Sasikarn Wannachokechai, a 51-year-old Bangkok resident who said she had never missed a chance to vote.

The outcome of the vote will almost certainly be inconclusive.

Because protesters blocked candidate registrations in some districts, parliament will not have enough members to convene. That means beleaguered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will be unable to form a government or even pass a budget, and Thailand will be stuck in political limbo for months as by-elections are run in constituencies that were unable to vote.

Official results were not expected for weeks, with final counting delayed until all districts have voted.

Advance voting that was scheduled for last Sunday but thwarted in many districts has now been rescheduled for late February.

The conflict pits demonstrators who say they want to suspend the country’s fragile democracy to

institute anti-corruption reforms against Yingluck’s supporters who know the election will not solve the nation’s crisis but insist the right to vote should not be taken away.

The protesters, a minority that cannot win power at the polls, are demanding the government be replaced by an unelected council that would rewrite political and electoral laws to combat deep-seated problems of corruption and money politics. Yingluck has refused to step down, arguing she is open to reform and that such a council would be unconstitutional.

“This is not a fair election,” said Ampai Pittajit, 65, a retired civil servant helping to block ballot boxes in the Bangkok district of Ratchathewi. “I’m doing this because I want reforms before an election. I understand those who are saying this is violating their rights. But what about our rights to be heard?”

More than 1,000 companies out of about 1,500 firms listed on stock markets are on track to log annual rises in both sales and recurring profits for the business year ending in March, the Nikkei business daily said.

The 1,500 companies are expected to post a combined 10 percent rise in sales and a 28 percent increase in recurring profit, the daily said, citing its tally of the companies’ forecasts.

The robust earnings are thanks to stronger exports business benefiting from a weaker yen, while domestic consumer spending is also picking up, it said.

Companies are making a steady shift to making profits out of higher sales from the past practice of eking out gains by restructuring businesses, it said.

The tally excluded firms in the financial sector and the report did not mention net profit.

The Nikkei said manufacturers were driving the overall improvement in corporate earnings, with sales expected to jump 16 percent for steelmakers, 14 percent for automakers, and 13 percent for machinery makers.

Companies driven by domestic demand are benefiting from a resurgence in consumer spending, it said, pointing to soaring higher sales of jewellery and expensive watches.

Japanese stock prices have jumped and the yen plunged since late 2012 owing to a policy blitz dubbed Abenomics, which meshes government spending with massive central bank monetary easing aimed at stemming 15 years of deflation.

A weak yen is positive for Japanese exporters but inflates the cost of imports.

Japan’s two biggest airlines said Friday that the weak yen sent fuel costs soaring and profits into a nosedive in the nine months to December.

IMF warns over impact of global market turmoil

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund on Friday warned emerging economies to shore up their defenses amid challenging global turmoil that has sparked a broad-based sell-off in financial markets.

An IMF spokesperson said they could not find a single trigger for the turmoil, but also appeared to warn central banks generally to be cautious about tightening monetary conditions.

“Many emerging economies,

along with other asset classes, have come under renewed market pressure in recent days,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

“While it is difficult to pinpoint a single trigger for the sell-off, the turbulence underscores the

challenging situation that many countries face as a result of tighter external financing conditions, slower growth, and softer commodity prices.”

The IMF noted that several countries had responded “forcefully”, not mentioning any by name but apparently referring to sharp interest rate hikes by the central banks of South Africa and Turkey, aimed at stabilizing their sinking currencies and stemming capital flight.

However, the spokesman said,

‘the turbulence highlights the need for coherent macroeconomic and financial policies, good communication, and, in some cases, the need for urgent policy action to improve fundamentals and policy credibility.”

Moreover, the spokesperson added, “The turbulence also underscores the need for vigilance among central banks over liquidity conditions in international capital markets.”

ket economies have pointed a finger at the US Federal Reserve’s cuts to its stimulus program for sending US dollar interest rates high and provoking a strong, sustained outflow from stocks and currencies in those countries.

8th BIT postponed until June 2015

DENPASAR - Organizers of the Bali International Triathlon scheduled for June 22, 2014, have received formal notification from the Bali Police asking that the 8th edition of the Bali International Triathlon be postponed until the Indonesian Presidential Elections 2014 are concluded.

With the presidential election process only coming to a formal end with the swearing in of Indo-

nesia’s next president on October 20, 2014, the organizers of the Bali International Triathlon have been compelled to reluctantly postpone the next race until a new date in early June 2015.

Run every year since 2007, the Bali International Triathlon has grown with each successive event over the past seven years, attracting more in 2013 more than 1,000 participants.

The Bali event - based in Jimbaran Bay - comprised a 1.5-

kilometer swim, a 40-kilomter bike race through South Bali, and a 10 kilometer foot race. A sprint distance division covering half the longer distance and a 5-kilometer fun run also form part of the Bali triathlon event.

Commenting on the decision to postpone, Arie Sukirno, Managing Director of Bali Discovery Tours and co-founder of the Bali event with Generic Events (USA) and Robb Strom, said: “The letter from the police came as

a complete surprise, especially after a series of meetings with the regency and police officials held to discuss preparations and operational plans for the coming race.”

Sukirno added having to postpone the race for security reasons was “both bittersweet and ironic” given that the motivation for creating the first Bali Race in 2007 was to demonstrate to the world that Bali was safe follow the second Bali terror bombing

of 2005.

Refunds are being arranged for all those already registered and paid for the 2014 race.

Sukirno, demonstrating the same grit and determination that has made the Bali International Triathlon an award-winner event on the international sporting calendar, said: “We have every intention of returning with the 8th edition of the Bali International Triathlon in June of 2015 - bigger and better.

BEIRUT — Syrian military helicopters dropped barrels packed with explosives in the government’s latest air raids on rebel-held areas of the northern city of Aleppo on Saturday, killing at least 23 people including a family trapped in a burning car, activists said. In neighboring Lebanon, a car bomb blew up near a gas station in a Shiite town, killing at least three people, in the latest attack linked to the war in neighboring Syria.

Footage on al-Manar television, associated with the Shiite group Hezbollah, showed a bright orange blaze as black silhouettes of people ran by the gas station in the northeastern town of Hermel that lies near the Syrian border. Blasts could be heard in the background.

The Lebanese Red Cross said another 18 people were wounded.

The organization initially reported that four people were killed, but later revised the number downwards. The large blast occurred near a school for impoverished and orphaned children. None were injured, officials said.

It was the latest in a series of attacks targeting Lebanon’s Shiite community, as Syria’s violence causes neighboring Lebanon’s sectarian tensions to escalate into

outright violence.

Sunni militant groups have claimed responsibility for a relentless series of attacks on Shiite parts of Lebanon, including a bomb that exploded in Hermel in late January. They say it is in retaliation for the Shiite Hezbollah group sending its fighters into Syria’s civil war to support forces of President Bashar Assad.

Lebanon’s Sunni community has also been hit, most notably by a deadly double car bombing outside Sunni mosques in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli in August.

In Aleppo, the raids with barrel bombs, as the crude weapons are known, have flattened residential buildings, forcing defenders to flee and allowing government troops to advance.

The latest attacks killed 13 people in the al-Bab area of Aleppo, Hassoun Abu Faisal of the Aleppo Media Center said via Skype. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights corroborated the information.

The blasts badly damaged buildings and caused a fuel tanker to explode, setting nearby vehicles alight, including one carrying a family of eight who were trying to flee the area as they heard the approaching helicopters, said Abu Faisal.

MADRID - Thousands of people marched in Spain’s capital on Saturday to protest against a government plan to limit abortions that has caused unusually open divisions in the ruling conservative People’s Party. Protesters from around the country joined the biggest demonstration so far against a draft bill to restrict abortion to cases of rape or severe danger to the mother’s health.Four years ago, Spain came in line with most of the rest of Europe when the then Socialist government legalised abortion on demand in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

“This is a step backward. We’re going back 30 years,” said Pilar Abad, 58, among the demonstrators waving purple signs who marched from the main train station to the national parliament. “We really hope that they’ll change this bill during the parliamentary debate, that’s why we’re here,” she said.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s cabinet approved the draft bill on abortion in December - in a move widely seen as an attempt to appease his party’s disgruntled right wing but it has not been submitted yet to parliament for debate. Rajoy recently signalled he was open to modifying the proposal after critics from within the PP said he had failed to build party consensus for the bill and the changes would be out of step with public opinion. As Spain finally emerges from a prolonged slump, Rajoy has struggled to sell the good economic news amid the backlash over the abortion move.

The first voter opinion survey after the cabinet approved the draft bill showed the PP losing ground to the opposition Socialists, who have vowed to fight the changes to abortion law.

However, the PP has an absolute majority in parliament so once it agrees on the wording of the bill it will be able to pass it into law.

“A political party has to take into account what voters think. Voters have spoken through the opinion polls,” Celia Villalobos, a People’s Party MP who supports abortion on demand, told a group of foreign correspondents this week. The PP is Spain’s only significant conservative party and therefore always struggles to reconcile demands from the centre to the far right.

As a result, the fishermen also running the business of canoe and used tire rental were forced to evacuate to a safer place. INDONESIA Separatist rebel shot dead in Papua Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Indonesian security forces have shot dead a separatist rebel in the restive eastern province of Papua, police said on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, police and the military raided a gathering of members of the rebel Free Papua Movement (OPM) near a beach in the Yapen Waropen district on Saturday, Papua police spokesman Pudjo Sulistyo said.

“They were involved in shooting incidents against police before and had caused unrest in the area,” he said.

“We told them to surrender but they retaliated by shooting at us first.

A firefight took place and we shot one of them dead,” he added.

Eleven members were arrested and firearms were seized along with outlawed pro-independence Morning Star flags. Three security officers were wounded in the gunbattle, Sulistyo said.

The OPM has since 1964 waged a low-level insurgency -- often using bows and arrows rather than guns -- against Indonesian rule over the resource-rich, ethnically Melanesian region.

MOUNT SINABUNG — The death toll from an Indonesian volcano that has been rumbling for months rose to 16 Sunday after rescuers found another charred corpse and a critically injured college student died in a hospital, officials said.

Mount Sinabung erupted again Saturday just a day after authorities allowed thousands of villagers who had been evacuated to return to its slopes, saying volcanice activity was decreasing. Rescuers found 14 bodies and rescued three people with burn wounds, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Rescue efforts resumed Sunday and rescuers found another body about three kilometers (two miles) from the volcano’s peak, said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the operation. Another resident, a 24year-old college student died in an intensive care unit, said an official at the Efarina Etaham hospital.

Among the dead were a local television journalist and four highschool students and their teacher who were visiting the mountain to see the eruptions up close, Nugroho said. At least three other people were injured and authorities fear the death toll will rise.

Sinabung in western Sumatra has been erupting for four months.

Authorities had evacuated more than 30,000 people, housing them in cramped tents, schools and public buildings, but many were desperate to return to check on homes and farms.

On Friday, authorities allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a five-kilometer (three-mile) danger zone to return after believing

volcanic activity had decreased.

Others living close to the peak have been returning to their homes over the past four months despite the dangers.

On Saturday, a series of huge blasts and eruptions thundered from the 2,600-meter (8,530foot) volcano. Television footage showed villages, farms and trees covered in thick gray ash.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has sporadically erupted since September.

SURABAYA — An endangered komodo dragon and a pregnant barking deer have been found dead in the latest animal deaths in Indonesia’s largest and problem-plagued zoo, a spokesman said Sunday.

Zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat said a 7-year-old giant lizard was found dead Saturday in his cage at the zoo in Surabaya, Indonesia’s secondlargest city and the provincial capital of East Java. A day earlier, a pregnant barking deer died shortly after a visitor reported to a zookeeper the animal was having convulsions and was foaming at the mouth.

Supangkat denied any negligence, and said a police forensic team was performing autopsies as part of an investigation to determine the cause of deaths. The death left the Surabaya zoo with 57 komodo dragons, the world’s most critically endangered

that are thought to number about 2,500 in the wild, primarily on the eastern Indonesian islands of Komodo, Padar and Rinca.

The facility that houses 3,500 animals has long been plagued with problems, including premature deaths, uncontrolled breeding and a lack of funding. An online petition has called on the government to close the facility, dubbed “the zoo of death.”

Last month, an African lion was found hanged on a steel cable inside its cage and the zoo’s sole female wildebeest died of a suspected stomach problem due to hot weather and humidity.

The zoo has been criticized over the deaths of scores of animals, including another African lion and a Sumatran tiger, over the last few years. The death of a giraffe two years ago with a beach ball-sized wad of plastic food wrappers in its belly sparked outrage among conservationists.

BEIRUT — Syrian military helicopters dropped barrels packed with explosives in the government’s latest air raids on rebel-held areas of the northern city of Aleppo on Saturday, killing at least 23 people including a family trapped in a burning car, activists said. In neighboring Lebanon, a car bomb blew up near a gas station in a Shiite town, killing at least three people, in the latest attack linked to the war in neighboring Syria.

Footage on al-Manar television, associated with the Shiite group Hezbollah, showed a bright orange blaze as black silhouettes of people ran by the gas station in the northeastern town of Hermel that lies near the Syrian border. Blasts could be heard in the background.

The Lebanese Red Cross said another 18 people were wounded.

The organization initially reported that four people were killed, but later revised the number downwards. The large blast occurred near a school for impoverished and orphaned children. None were injured, officials said.

It was the latest in a series of attacks targeting Lebanon’s Shiite community, as Syria’s violence causes neighboring Lebanon’s sectarian tensions to escalate into

outright violence.

Sunni militant groups have claimed responsibility for a relentless series of attacks on Shiite parts of Lebanon, including a bomb that exploded in Hermel in late January. They say it is in retaliation for the Shiite Hezbollah group sending its fighters into Syria’s civil war to support forces of President Bashar Assad.

Lebanon’s Sunni community has also been hit, most notably by a deadly double car bombing outside Sunni mosques in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli in August.

In Aleppo, the raids with barrel bombs, as the crude weapons are known, have flattened residential buildings, forcing defenders to flee and allowing government troops to advance.

The latest attacks killed 13 people in the al-Bab area of Aleppo, Hassoun Abu Faisal of the Aleppo Media Center said via Skype. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights corroborated the information.

The blasts badly damaged buildings and caused a fuel tanker to explode, setting nearby vehicles alight, including one carrying a family of eight who were trying to flee the area as they heard the approaching helicopters, said Abu Faisal.

A video showed men dragging a charred victim out of a smashed building. “You want a political solution? Here is a political solution!” shouted one man as he pointed at two charred bodies on the rubble-strewn ground.

MADRID - Thousands of people marched in Spain’s capital on Saturday to protest against a government plan to limit abortions that has caused unusually open divisions in the ruling conservative People’s Party. Protesters from around the country joined the biggest demonstration so far against a draft bill to restrict abortion to cases of rape or severe danger to the mother’s health.Four years ago, Spain came in line with most of the rest of Europe when the then Socialist government legalised abortion on demand in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

“This is a step backward. We’re going back 30 years,” said Pilar Abad, 58, among the demonstrators waving purple signs who marched from the main train station to the national parliament. “We really hope that they’ll change this bill during the parliamentary debate, that’s why we’re here,” she said.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s cabinet approved the draft bill on abortion in December - in a move widely seen as an attempt to appease his party’s disgruntled right wing but it has not been submitted yet to parliament for debate. Rajoy recently signalled he was open to modifying the proposal after critics from within the PP said he had failed to build party consensus for the bill and the changes would be out of step with public opinion. As Spain finally emerges from a prolonged slump, Rajoy has struggled to sell the good economic news amid the backlash over the abortion move.

The first voter opinion survey after the cabinet approved the draft bill showed the PP losing ground to the opposition Socialists, who have vowed to fight the changes to abortion law.

However, the PP has an absolute majority in parliament so once it agrees on the wording of the bill it will be able to pass it into law.

“A political party has to take into account what voters think. Voters have spoken through the opinion polls,” Celia Villalobos, a People’s Party MP who supports abortion on demand, told a group of foreign correspondents this week. The PP is Spain’s only significant conservative party and therefore always struggles to reconcile demands from the centre to the far right.

The more conservative wing has become frustrated with Rajoy over tax hikes to close a budget gap and over the release of prisoners from violent Basque separatist group ETA, under orders from a European court.

But the draft legislation failed to mollify the rightists and angered moderates. In a country where party discipline is strong, an unusual number of more centrist PP regional leaders and MPs have spoken out against it.

JAKARTA - Indonesian security forces have shot dead a separatist rebel in the restive eastern province of Papua, police said on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, police and the military raided a gathering of members of the rebel Free Papua Movement (OPM) near a beach in the Yapen Waropen district on Saturday, Papua police spokesman Pudjo Sulistyo said.

“They were involved in shooting incidents against police before and had caused unrest in the area,” he said.

“We told them to surrender but they retaliated by shooting at us first.

A firefight took place and we shot one of them dead,” he added.

Eleven members were arrested and firearms were seized along with outlawed pro-independence Morning Star flags. Three security officers were wounded in the gunbattle, Sulistyo said.

The OPM has since 1964 waged a low-level insurgency -- often using bows and arrows rather than guns -- against Indonesian rule over the resource-rich, ethnically Melanesian region.

MOUNT SINABUNG — The death toll from an Indonesian volcano that has been rumbling for months rose to 16 Sunday after rescuers found another charred corpse and a critically injured college student died in a hospital, officials said.

Mount Sinabung erupted again Saturday just a day after authorities allowed thousands of villagers who had been evacuated to return to its slopes, saying volcanice activity was decreasing. Rescuers found 14 bodies and rescued three people with burn wounds, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Rescue efforts resumed Sunday and rescuers found another body about three kilometers (two miles) from the volcano’s peak, said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the operation. Another resident, a 24year-old college student died in an intensive care unit, said an official at the Efarina Etaham hospital.

Among the dead were a local television journalist and four highschool students and their teacher who were visiting the mountain to see the eruptions up close, Nugroho said. At least three other people were injured and authorities fear the death toll will rise.

Sinabung in western Sumatra has been erupting for four months.

Authorities had evacuated more than 30,000 people, housing them in cramped tents, schools and public buildings, but many were desperate to return to check on homes and farms.

On Friday, authorities allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a five-kilometer (three-mile) danger zone to return after believing

volcanic activity had decreased.

Others living close to the peak have been returning to their homes over the past four months despite the dangers.

On Saturday, a series of huge blasts and eruptions thundered from the 2,600-meter (8,530foot) volcano. Television footage showed villages, farms and trees covered in thick gray ash.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has sporadically erupted since September.

SURABAYA — An endangered komodo dragon and a pregnant barking deer have been found dead in the latest animal deaths in Indonesia’s largest and problem-plagued zoo, a spokesman said Sunday.

Zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat said a 7-year-old giant lizard was found dead Saturday in his cage at the zoo in Surabaya, Indonesia’s secondlargest city and the provincial capital of East Java. A day earlier, a pregnant barking deer died shortly after a visitor reported to a zookeeper the animal was having convulsions and was foaming at the mouth.

Supangkat denied any negligence, and said a police forensic team was performing autopsies as part of an investigation to determine the cause of deaths. The death left the Surabaya zoo with 57 komodo dragons, the world’s most critically endangered

that are thought to number about 2,500 in the wild, primarily on the eastern Indonesian islands of Komodo, Padar and Rinca.

The facility that houses 3,500 animals has long been plagued with problems, including premature deaths, uncontrolled breeding and a lack of funding. An online petition has called on the government to close the facility, dubbed “the zoo of death.”

Last month, an African lion was found hanged on a steel cable inside its cage and the zoo’s sole female wildebeest died of a suspected stomach problem due to hot weather and humidity.

The zoo has been criticized over the deaths of scores of animals, including another African lion and a Sumatran tiger, over the last few years. The death of a giraffe two years ago with a beach ball-sized wad of plastic food wrappers in its belly sparked outrage among conservationists.

More than 1,000 companies out of about 1,500 firms listed on stock markets are on track to log annual rises in both sales and recurring profits for the business year ending in March, the Nikkei business daily said.

The 1,500 companies are expected to post a combined 10 percent rise in sales and a 28 percent increase in recurring profit, the daily said, citing its tally of the companies’ forecasts.

The robust earnings are thanks to stronger exports business benefiting from a weaker yen, while domestic consumer spending is also picking up, it said.

Companies are making a steady shift to making profits out of higher sales from the past practice of eking out gains by restructuring businesses, it said.

The tally excluded firms in the financial sector and the report did not mention net profit.

The Nikkei said manufacturers were driving the overall improvement in corporate earnings, with sales expected to jump 16 percent for steelmakers, 14 percent for automakers, and 13 percent for machinery makers.

Companies driven by domestic demand are benefiting from a resurgence in consumer spending, it said, pointing to soaring higher sales of jewellery and expensive watches.

Japanese stock prices have jumped and the yen plunged since late 2012 owing to a policy blitz dubbed Abenomics, which meshes government spending with massive central bank monetary easing aimed at stemming 15 years of deflation.

A weak yen is positive for Japanese exporters but inflates the cost of imports.

Japan’s two biggest airlines said Friday that the weak yen sent fuel costs soaring and profits into a nosedive in the nine months to December.

IMF warns over impact of global market turmoil

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund on Friday warned emerging economies to shore up their defenses amid challenging global turmoil that has sparked a broad-based sell-off in financial markets.

An IMF spokesperson said they could not find a single trigger for the turmoil, but also appeared to warn central banks generally to be cautious about tightening monetary conditions.

“Many emerging economies,

along with other asset classes, have come under renewed market pressure in recent days,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

“While it is difficult to pinpoint a single trigger for the sell-off, the turbulence underscores the

challenging situation that many countries face as a result of tighter external financing conditions, slower growth, and softer commodity prices.”

The IMF noted that several countries had responded “forcefully”, not mentioning any by name but apparently referring to sharp interest rate hikes by the central banks of South Africa and Turkey, aimed at stabilizing their sinking currencies and stemming capital flight.

However, the spokesman said,

‘the turbulence highlights the need for coherent macroeconomic and financial policies, good communication, and, in some cases, the need for urgent policy action to improve fundamentals and policy credibility.”

Moreover, the spokesperson added, “The turbulence also underscores the need for vigilance among central banks over liquidity conditions in international capital markets.”

ket economies have pointed a finger at the US Federal Reserve’s cuts to its stimulus program for sending US dollar interest rates high and provoking a strong, sustained outflow from stocks and currencies in those countries.

Speaking on Bloomberg TV, on Thursday India’s central bank chief Raghuram Rajan assailed the Fed and central banks at other leading economies for not weighing the impact of monetary tightening on developing economies.

8th BIT postponed until June 2015

DENPASAR - Organizers of the Bali International Triathlon scheduled for June 22, 2014, have received formal notification from the Bali Police asking that the 8th edition of the Bali International Triathlon be postponed until the Indonesian Presidential Elections 2014 are concluded.

With the presidential election process only coming to a formal end with the swearing in of Indo-

nesia’s next president on October 20, 2014, the organizers of the Bali International Triathlon have been compelled to reluctantly postpone the next race until a new date in early June 2015.

Run every year since 2007, the Bali International Triathlon has grown with each successive event over the past seven years, attracting more in 2013 more than 1,000 participants.

The Bali event - based in Jimbaran Bay - comprised a 1.5-

kilometer swim, a 40-kilomter bike race through South Bali, and a 10 kilometer foot race. A sprint distance division covering half the longer distance and a 5-kilometer fun run also form part of the Bali triathlon event.

Commenting on the decision to postpone, Arie Sukirno, Managing Director of Bali Discovery Tours and co-founder of the Bali event with Generic Events (USA) and Robb Strom, said: “The letter from the police came as

a complete surprise, especially after a series of meetings with the regency and police officials held to discuss preparations and operational plans for the coming race.”

Sukirno added having to postpone the race for security reasons was “both bittersweet and ironic” given that the motivation for creating the first Bali Race in 2007 was to demonstrate to the world that Bali was safe follow the second Bali terror bombing

of 2005.

Refunds are being arranged for all those already registered and paid for the 2014 race.

Sukirno, demonstrating the same grit and determination that has made the Bali International Triathlon an award-winner event on the international sporting calendar, said: “We have every intention of returning with the 8th edition of the Bali International Triathlon in June of 2015 - bigger and better.

TABANAN - Rainy season turns out to be a bad omen for tile artisans in Tabanan. It happens because the quality of product yielded highly depends on the weather. When the production is forced in the current unpredictable weather, it is worried to kindle the loss of quality.

As stated by Made Sudarta, a tile craftsman from Pangkung hamlet, Pejaten village, Kediri, Saturday (Jan 31), the long rainy season was considered to absolutely hamper the production process. If forced, it was feared the quality of tile production which so far had already been

well known by the public would be tarnished.

According to him, heat of the sun became an important part of tile drying process. Since wet clay posed the main material of tile, it required the storing phase by placing it in the home yard under sun light before

the burning process.”Therefore, the current rainy season make us difficult to dry the tiles because it lacks of sunlight.

In normal weather, the tile manufacturing process can produce 9,000 pieces within a week, while if the weather is like this time the process even reaches up to 3 weeks,” he explained. Quite often, he added, when drying tiles in the yard and it suddenly rained many tiles would be exposed to rainwater and caused them to be damaged.

Pejaten posed a village where

almost the entire community was getting involved in the industry of tile, ceramic, iron crafts, candles and various other crafts. Such business had become the backbone of local economies.

Similarly, most population of the neighboring village, Nyitdah, also had livelihood as a tile craftsman.

Rainy season as today was a barrier in itself because their drying process remained to rely on nature and highly depended on the weather such as the drying of tiles under the sunlight.

Such condition was also experienced by a brick maker, Nyoman Darsa, 45. According to him, his brick production would be faltered in rainy season due to lack of sunlight. In order to dry, he had to wait until a few days. “Both brick and tile equally need the heat of sunlight because when stored in the furnace can also speed up the drying process of brick. But when rainy season arrives we can do nothing and have to wait for a few days in order the brick can dry,” he concluded. (kmb28)

Four foreign guests suffer theft when staying at lodging Bali Post

GIANYAR - Four foreign guests from various countries who stayed at Yogi House (YH) at Katik Lantang hamlet, Singakerta village, Ubud, experienced a theft, Thursday (Jan 30). Such incident was just known around 08:00 a.m. and then reported to police station.

Friday (Jan 31), the four guests consisted of Yvette Jong, 34, from the USA who lost one Mac Book Air, while Vincent Michael Sales Math, 21, lost a laptop, an iPhone 5, hard drive, backpack, leather bag, computer charger, USB Flash Stick, wallet containing ID Card, Driving License and cash worth IDR 2,000,000.

Similar unlucky fate was also

suffered by Maria Farrugia, 26, a European nationality, lost an iPhone 4, hard drive, laptop case, leather handbag, head phone, Canon camera and cash worth USD 800,000, EUR 150 and USD 100.

Meanwhile, Matthew Nelson Bell, 29, lost green bag, Mac Book Pro laptop, Go Pro camera, two hard drives, sunglasses, head phone, iPhone and a wallet containing IDR

5,000,000.

The theft incident occurred due to weak security system in the YH. At the time of the incident, the gates of YH were not closed. In addition, the compound wall around the YH was not too high or about 1.20 meters. More ironically, room of the victim was not locked and no security guards were in charge.

Therefore, such condition provided

convenience for the culprit to take away the belongings.

Currently police were making elaborate investigation on the theft case by collecting more data.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The African Union urged its members to “speak with one voice” to prevent criminal proceedings at the International Criminal court against sitting presidents, according to a statement Saturday.

The 54-nation organization said it was disappointed that a request to the U.N. Security Council to defer the trials of Kenya’s leaders “has not yielded the positive result expected.”

The African Union also has sought the deferral of criminal proceedings against Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, who has been charged with genocide in Darfur.

Only Botswana has opposed the stand taken by the African Union, made in a statement received Saturday after a summit in Ethiopia attended by 34 leaders.

“African states parties should comply with African Union decisions on the ICC and continue to speak with one voice,” the statement said, adding “There is an imperative need for all member states to ensure that they adhere to and articulate commonly agreed positions ...”

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto face charges of crimes against humanity at the inter-

national court at The Hague for allegedly orchestrating postelection violence that killed more than 1,000 people following a disputed presidential election in late 2007. Both men deny the charges.

The International Criminal Court has recently come under strong criticism from African leaders who accuse it of racism in indicting only Africans. Countries such as Uganda have suggested they may decide to sever ties with the court in solidarity with Kenya. Some Africans also argue that the Kenyan leaders need to concentrate on governing their countries to ensure stability as the region faces unprecedented terrorist challenges.

Ruto’s trial continues at The Hague but the case against Kenyatta may collapse. Kenyatta’s trial was to start in November but was postponed to February after the prosecution and defense teams said they needed more time to prepare. The prosecutor in December asked for an additional three-month adjournment after one witness withdrew and another said they gave false evidence.

A Kenyan court on Friday refused to stop the arrest of a journalist wanted by the international court for allegedly interfering with prosecution witnesses in the case against Ruto.

BANGKOK — Protesters trying to derail Thailand’s national elections Sunday forced the closure of hundreds of polling stations in a highly contentious vote that has become the latest flash point in the country’s deepening political crisis. Around the country, the vast majority of voting stations were open and polling proceeded relatively peacefully. Polling stations closed for the day with no reports of violent clashes, easing fears of bloodshed a day after gun battles in Bangkok left seven people wounded.

The national focus was riveted to the capital where 488 of the capital’s 6,600 polling stations were shut and several skirmishes broke out between protesters intent on disrupting the vote and frustrated would-be voters. The Election Commission said the closure of polls affected more than 6 million registered voters.

In some cases, protesters formed blockades to prevent voters from entering polling stations. Elsewhere, protesters blocked the delivery of ballots and other election materials, preventing voting stations from opening. The Election Commission said that hundreds of polling stations in the south, an opposition stronghold, faced similar problems. Angry voters at one Bangkok district stood outside of closed voting stations waving their identification cards and shouting “Election! Election!”

“We have the right to vote.

You don’t have the right to take

that away from us,” said Sasikarn Wannachokechai, a 51-year-old Bangkok resident who said she had never missed a chance to vote.

The outcome of the vote will almost certainly be inconclusive.

Because protesters blocked candidate registrations in some districts, parliament will not have enough members to convene. That means beleaguered Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will be unable to form a government or even pass a budget, and Thailand will be stuck in political limbo for months as by-elections are run in constituencies that were unable to vote.

Official results were not expected for weeks, with final counting delayed until all districts have voted.

Advance voting that was scheduled for last Sunday but thwarted in many districts has now been rescheduled for late February.

The conflict pits demonstrators who say they want to suspend the country’s fragile democracy to

institute anti-corruption reforms against Yingluck’s supporters who know the election will not solve the nation’s crisis but insist the right to vote should not be taken away.

The protesters, a minority that cannot win power at the polls, are demanding the government be replaced by an unelected council that would rewrite political and electoral laws to combat deep-seated problems of corruption and money politics. Yingluck has refused to step down, arguing she is open to reform and that such a council would be unconstitutional.

“This is not a fair election,” said Ampai Pittajit, 65, a retired civil servant helping to block ballot boxes in the Bangkok district of Ratchathewi. “I’m doing this because I want reforms before an election. I understand those who are saying this is violating their rights. But what about our rights to be heard?”

Culture festival opens in ancient Pakistani ruins

MECHANICSBURG, Ohio — A motorcycle-loving man’s family has fulfilled his dying wish — to be buried astride his beloved Harley-Davidson encased in a see-through casket. But it wasn’t easy.

The project required an extra-large cemetery plot to accommodate a Plexiglas casket for Billy Standley and his hulking custom-painted 1967 Electra Glide cruiser. Five embalmers worked to prepare his body with a metal back brace and straps to ensure he’ll never lose his seat.

Standley’s family said he’d been talking about it for years and liked to take people to the garage to show off the unusual casket his two sons had built for him. He told people he didn’t just want to ride off to heaven, he wanted the world to see him do it in the big seethrough box. “He was a quirky man,” daughter Dorothy Brown said.

“But when it comes to us kids, he loved us, he raised us well and, of course, we wanted to help him.”

The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/1dS4hsq ) reported that Standley, of Mechanicsburg, west of Columbus, died of lung cancer Sunday at age 82. He was buried Friday.

Newspaper photos of the prepared casket showed Standley with his eyes closed astride the big bike. He was dressed in black leathers, a white helmet and glasses, his gloved hands grasping the handlebars.

Standley told his family his motorcycle helped him retain his sense of adventure after he settled down to raise four children, which was quite a compromise for the man who made his start at 13 as ranch hand and rodeo rider.

MOHENJODARO, Pakistan — Folk dancers and singers wearing traditional multicolored dresses took the stage Saturday at one of the world’s most ancient archaeological sites in southern Pakistan for a festival that organizers say aspires to promote peace in a nation where political violence has left some 40,000 dead in recent years.

The festival drew controversy when archaeologists said they

fear the stage and other event infrastructure could damage the delicate mud ruins. “It is nothing but insanity” says archaeologist Asma Ibrahim, who is a member of the Management Board for Antiquities and Physical Heritage of the Sindh government. She says the stage and sound and light show could damage walls.

But organizers say there is no risk to the ruins. “There is no risk to Mohenjodaro because of the festival. Rather, it was never decorated the way we have done now,” Soomro said. He said he supervised arrangements for the festival to make sure no harm was caused to the site.

Zardari visited the site Thursday and said every step was being taken to protect it, and people would not be allowed to roam freely over the ruins.

Agrotourism development not worked on seriously Bali Post

DENPASAR - Many circles assess that tourism development in Bali has gone too far and sacrificed the agriculture in Bali as indicated by farmland conversion for the benefit of property or tourism supporting facilities. In the future, this agrotourism should be expanded and integrated with social and cultural life of our farmers,” he said.

Jelantik Sanjaya pointed out the development of ecotourism in the context of organic farming.

For example, travelers could be invited to see the processing of cow dung into compost or the packaging of organic vegetables or fruits.

In the context of subak as part of the agrotourism, for example, he said, travelers could be invited to see how the awig-awig or bylaw of the subak was applied and how the Tri Hita Karana concept was implemented in the farming life, especially concerning with the religious ceremony.

“Agrotourism must be made into a single package or attraction to travelers so as to give the impression if the organic farming has been populistic and involved in the region such as in the Jatiluwih region. There will be no longer company that is only looking for their own benefits but how the profits of

this agrotourism can be earned by people at the village concerned,” he said.

He added if the government was serious about building the agriculture and had a good will to synergize the agriculture and tourism it should give attention and a great support to the development of agrotourism. For example, it could fix or set up a good road infrastructure to the agrotourism destination, help educate and assist farmers in the agrotourism management, promotion and marketing. “The institution of farmer also plays a major role here so there will be no post-harvest losses due to middlemen tricks. Here, the government should facilitate the processing of the agricultural products to enhance the economic value as well as guarantee the marketing and other aspects,” he said. (kmb29)

One of the pilgrims named Kadek Darsana, 35, said that ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration at this time he prepared an offering to the ancestors. “In this year’s celebration, I offer lunar fruits such as grapes, rambutan, dragon fruit and typical pastries of Chinese New Year,” he said on Friday (Jan 31).

In line with the other pilgrims in the TITD Seng Hong Bio, Jenny S., 50, from Seririt, said she came with her family to the temple to invoke blessings. “Our family along with children hopes that we can be bestowed with the mercy of luck and health without lacking of nothing,” she said.

At different location in the TITD Ling Gwan Kiong were seen hundreds of pilgrims to flock the place of worship alternately. According to Harmini, more Chinese-descendant pilgrims came to pay homage in this Chinese New Year than previous years. “Atmosphere of the Chinese New Year this year seems more festive and crowded. My grandchildren come together to pray in order to be blessed and given a safety this year,” she said.

Most pilgrims come from the Pupuan, Busungbiu and Banyuatis area.

Lien Wiek, 63, the temple guardian explained the weather this year was very bright and the pilgrims were very happy to come to temple. “Last year’s celebration was flushed by rain, but now the weather is very sunny in Singaraja. The TITD Ling Gwan Kiong is fairly old established in 1873 and it has significant meaning to Chinese-descendant people in Singaraja and surrounding areas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Ceng Eng Sing, 78, added that he would continue to preserve the temple with young people and communities. This Lunar year was expected to be a source of fortune and strengthen the Chinese-descendant people from various parts of Indonesia. “We are concerned to preserve this temple. The atmosphere each year is also getting crowded, so we are more encouraged when Chinese New Year comes. The Chinese New Year 2565 this time is graced with the arts and cultural acculturation by featuring the art of Gong Kebyar from the hamlet nearby. It is intended to make the atmosphere of the Chinese New Year celebration more festive and crowded,” he said. (dgk)

SINGARAJA - Supporting tourism facilities at Lovina seems to get less maximal touch of maintenance by local government. As proof, the tourist information board established at roadside of Singaraja-Seririt, precisely at Kalibukbuk village, Lovina, looks in apprehensive condition. Embankment collapses, ring road at risk of being disconnected SEMARAPURA - The damage of embankment along the coastline of Nusa Penida has been getting severer. After destroyed, a serious abrasion now starts to erode the highway. For instance, the ring road leading to Mentigi Market, Mentigi hamlet, Batununggul village, has already been damaged as hit by tidal waves. Moreover, the road composed of land and limestone is very easily destroyed by the wave brunt.

The ring road is very busy with daily activities. Its location near the Mentigi Public Market is frequently complained by residents. It has been going on since the past two years. Lately, the damage is getting

severer because the row of levees previously protecting the road has also collapsed and even destroyed.

Asphalt layer looks to have come off and has lots of big gaping hole.

Almost along the shoreline at this village, the levees built of limestone have been destroyed and need to be fixed immediately.

Last week, a number of regional working units (SKPD) checked the condition directly. Location being not far from the Mentigi Harbor also made the relevant agencies to immediately address the issue seriously.

Chief of Dalem Setra Batununggul customary village, I Dewa Nyoman Yusa, had also complained about the damage to the embankment at Batununggul village. It was one of

the road accesses and alternative for residents to perform activities crossing the villages. “I worry if it is not immediately repaired the road access can be broken and the activities of people will also get disturbed,” he said.

Since long time ago the Nusa Penida subdistrict has been besieged by abrasion. The district is the most seriously affected. Based on the data of Public Works, among the 13 existing beaches, a total of 13,550 meters had been affected by abrasion and had not been handled yet. Most shoreline damages occurred to Sental Beach and Suana Beach. Of the length of the Sental Beach reaching 18,000 meters, along 4,500 meters had not been handled. Similar condi-

tion also happened to Suana Beach.

The damaged happened to 4,000 meters of the total length of 15,000 meters and the area was also prone to abrasion. Overall, along 18,850 meters of the beach in Nusa Penida were very prone to abrasion. Meanwhile, the handled area only reached 9,129.96 meters.

The Head of Klungkung Public Works, A.A. Ngurah Agung, said on Friday (Jan 31) the damage to the road of Batununggul village would be fixed soon through the routine maintenance budget worth IDR 400 million. A resident who lives near the tourist information board said on Friday (Jan 31) that it was built at roadside by local authority a few years ago. It was usually used for placing tourist activities announcement at Lovina and as a promotional tool for the management of hotels and restaurants. Surprisingly, the facility was left in poor condition. Even, the poles looked oblique and almost collapsed. The roof collapsed and the board ragged after being stuck with brochures and posters. No wonder such condition was often complained by travelers. They were disappointed because the tourist information board was vile and rundown. “It’s been long not repaired whereas travelers often complained about the condition of the tourist information board almost collapsing,” he said.

Other than tourist information board looking in apprehensive condition, the signpost name of Kalibukbuk village right at the entrance into Lovina Beach had also been left in damaged condition since few years ago. Building of the village name signpost made of concrete has long collapsed. No one knows why it collapses. Chunks of the concrete are now left strewn over the pavement. Again, the debris harms the beauty of Lovina having been well known as an international village.

Residents who saw such condition admitted to be disappointed as the government deliberately ignored the destruction of the supporting facilities at the Lovina tourist attraction. They hoped that technical agencies in charge could pay attention to such condition and provide relief fund to repair the damage. (mud)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Mary J. Blige, John Legend and Marc Anthony kicked off the American football championship Super Bowl weekend in style by serenading a celebrity-filled crowd in Manhattan. Hundreds of New Yorkers and visitors packed into Cipriani’s 42nd Street on Friday night for a party sponsored by Shape and Men’s Fitness magazines. Tickets cost $2,500 per person.

The three performers each chose a charity to receive funds: Legend chose the Show Me Campaign, which works to give children access to quality education; Blige chose the Mary J. Blige Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now Inc.; and Anthony chose Maestro Cares, which works with orphaned children in Latin America.

48 kilometers of beach in Buleleng hit by abrasion Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Coastal territory of Buleleng has continued to be besieged by abrasion recently. Even, when entering the season of bad weather lately, condition of the abraded coastal area worsened. So far, the abraded area occurred approximately along 48,262 kilometers of the total length of coastal territory in North Bali reaching 157 kilometers.

The Head of Buleleng Public Works, Putu Yasa, when contacted confirmed that the coastal territory of Northern Bali continued to be beset by abrasion and getting worse. Yasa said the most severe abrasion occurred on Hepi Beach, Tukadmungga village, Buleleng.

The beach taken advantage for tourist area abraded along about one kilometer from the end of the breakwater of Hotel Baruna towards the west to coastal area

of Anturan village, Buleleng. The beach was abraded due to tidal wave disasters occurred a few years ago. When entering the season of bad weather lately, the condition of abraded area was getting worsened. “The Hepi Beach indeed has been abraded and it is getting worsened in this bad weather condition. We still continue to make data collection while monitoring, so the data of the abraded area will become clear,” he said.

In addition to Hepi Beach at Tukadmungga, the Penimbangan Beach is also in severe enough abrasion. However, the affected beach is only 50 meters long.

The most severe damaged beach occurred just north of the Penimbangan Temple. The breakwater having been installed since a few years ago are now destroyed after being hit by tidal waves.

Seth Meyers off ‘Saturday Night Live’ for new job

NEW YORK — Seth Meyers has departed “Saturday Night Live,” just weeks before he begins his new job as host of “Late Night.” Meyers co-anchored “Weekend Update” on the NBC sketchcomedy series for eight seasons and was joined for his farewell newscast by “SNL” alumni Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Fred Armisen.

They told Meyers they had come to take him “to the other side.” Meyers called his “SNL” tenure “the job I always wanted.” He joined the cast in 2001. He’ll take over at NBC’s “Late Night” on Feb. 24. “SNL” head writer Colin Jost will replace Meyers at the “Weekend Update” anchor desk alongside Cecily Strong. He signs on March 1.
