Indonesia tourism generates USD 8.5b of foreign exchanges Jakarta (Bali Post)â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, claimed the number of foreign tourists visit to Indonesia during 2011 reached 7.6 million people, surpassing the target set at 7.1 million people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The tourist visit to Indonesia reached 7.6 million people exceeding the target of 7.1 million people. It showed an increase of 8.5 percent against last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s achievement,â&#x20AC;? said Mari Pangestu in Jakarta on Sunday (Jan 1).

She said the increase was higher than the growth of world tourism in 2011 by 4.5 percent.

Based on that number, the foreign exchange earnings of tourism sector in 2011 were estimated to reach USD 8.5 billion, growing by 11.8 percent compared to achievement in 2010 amounting to USD 7.6 billion.

She added that with such acquisition of foreign exchange the tourism sector became the fifth largest contributor to the national economy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The increase of foreign exchange earnings this year is in keeping with the increase in expenditure of foreign tourists from USD 1,085.75 in 2010 to USD1,118.26 per person per visit this year,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The increase in tourism expenditures, she added, also occurred in domestic tourists. Her party

recorded the average expenditure of domestic tourists was IDR 641,760 and increased to IDR 662,680 per person per trip in 2011. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the third quarter of this year, the expenditure estimation of domestic tourists reaches IDR 114.64 trillion generated by 172.994 million trips compared to achievement in 2010 amounting to IDR 150.41 trillion,â&#x20AC;? she said.

According to her, the achievement of 2011 should become a milestone to prepare ourselves in facing the challenging year of 2012. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Despite the bright prospect of tourism in 2012, we still have to anticipate the possibility of weakening global economy,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Her party would cooperate with all the stakeholders so the target could be achieved in 2012.

With the target of eight million

foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in 2012, her party expected to generate USD 8.96 billion of foreign exchange, while the target of domestic tourists was 171.5 billion.

She was optimistic if the target could be achieved because the tourism sector was considered relatively resistant to crisis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;During the global economic crisis in 2009, our tourism sector continued to grow despite small. This shows tourism is resilient to crises and can be a seat belt for the national economy,â&#x20AC;? she added.

At the end of 2010, her party had set three targets for foreign tourists visit in 2011, namely the pessimistic target by 7.2 million tourists, moderate target by 7.5 million tourists and optimistic target by 7.7 million tourists. (010)

Mangupura predicted to be magnet of economic growth Mangupura (Bali Post)â&#x20AC;&#x201D;

The geo-strategic position of Mangupura as the capital of Badung is predicted to become a magnet of new economic growth and population concentration, although currently the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;faceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of Mangupura City is not visible. On that account, Mangupura should be carefully prepared from the beginning so as not to develop sporadically and partially as happened to other cities.

Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, said the burden and function of Mangupura City were serving as the capital of Sarbagita urban areas as well as the national strategic area as set forth in the Presidential Regulation No. 45/2011 concerning with Urban Spatial Plan of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan (Sarbagita).

Upon approval of the Ministry of Public Works, Mangupura City also served as the regency civic center, regional health center, re-

gional land transport node, center for small and medium industries (SMI), central infrastructure of sport, and center for cultural heritage preservation.

Therefore, Gde Agung stated the planning documents, legal instrument, policy and direction of Mangupura City development should be prepared carefully and adaptive to the strategic roles in terms of the provincial, regional and national interests by putting forward the principles of sustainable development. Sustainable development principles should be applied starting from the arrangement of roads, drainage, sidewalks, parks and basic residential facilities and infrastructure.

The Head of BadungAgency for Regional Development (Bappeda) and Research & Development, I :D\DQ 6XDPEDUD DGGHG WKDW ÂżQDO design and master plan studies of the RTRK for Mangupura City infrastructure had been completed.

Government was now planning to prioritize the nine villages including in the Mangupura City area. At early stage, Badung Regency had also made arrangements especially related to the border of Denpasar with Mangupura from the south. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2012, the arrangement will be resumed until the border with Denpasar,â&#x20AC;? he said last week.

Unfortunately, the hectic domestic tourists to Lovina were not poised with adequate facilities, especially an ample parking space.

Observation at location last Sunday indicated that some groups of domestic tourists from Jakarta, Surabaya and other major cities outside Bali had already crowded Lovina from the morning. Most domestic tourists came by private car, while the remaining groups were transported by bus.

Edi, a domestic tourist from Lumajang, East Java, for instance, said that Lovina Beach posed a tourist object having advantage compared to other beaches. It had good sanitation and tranquil waves so it was comfortable for the children to bathe.Additionally, it also offered dolphin attractions easily found with a small boat ride. This advantage could not be encountered on the beaches in other regions. On that account, he and the family were never absent to visit Lovina for recreation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have come here for four times for recreational bathing or seeing dolphin attractions. Since I have often visited the famous Kuta Beach and other beaches in Bali, I deliberately come here with family to seek a new atmosphere,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Meanwhile, Putu Senior, a marine tour guide in Lovina, claimed that tourist visit to Lovina during the Christmas and New Year holidays were more crowded than normal days. Many tourists from Jakarta and Surabaya were interested in watching dolphin attractions and diving to have a closer look at the beautiful

garden of coral reefs in Lovina. A boat was capable of transporting two tourists only. Meanwhile, the rate for one-time tour to sea was IDR 60,000 per person.

As a result, many tourist groups canceled their plan to drop by in Lovina and only enjoyed the view of Lovina from the bus passing through on the Gilimanuk-Singaraja road section.

According to a parking attendant, Putu Mangku, the buses or vehicles conveying tourists were very interested in visiting Lovina. However, the road access to parking area was very narrow so they were unable to come in. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The parking area is just enough to accommodate private cars and it has been fully occupied.

Moreover, the access from the main road to parking area is also narrow, so buses are unable to reach the location,â&#x20AC;? said Mangku while expecting that local government could KHOS ÂżQG D VROXWLRQ IRU WKH SDUNLQJ problem so the buses could enter and more tourists would surely come to Lovina. Crowded domestic tourists, narrow parking space LOVINABeach tourist attraction included in the most visited beach by domestic tourists on the celebration of New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day 2012, Sunday (Jan 1).Those domestic tourists were interested to see the dolphin attraction offered by marine tour guides at the tourist object. Unfortunately, the hectic domestic tourists to Lovina were not poised with adequate facilities, especially an ample parking space.

Observation at location last Sunday indicated that some groups of domestic tourists from Jakarta, Surabaya and other major cities outside Bali had already crowded Lovina from the morning. Most domestic tourists came by private car, while the remaining groups were transported by bus.

Edi, a domestic tourist from Lumajang, East Java, for instance, said that Lovina Beach posed a tourist object having advantage compared to other beaches. It had good sanitation and tranquil waves so it was comfortable for the children to bathe.Additionally, it also offered dolphin attractions easily found with a small boat ride. This advantage could not be encountered on the beaches in other regions. On that account, he and the family were never absent to visit Lovina for recreation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have come here for four times for recreational bathing or seeing dolphin attractions. Since I have often visited the famous Kuta Beach and other beaches in Bali, I deliberately come here with family to seek a new atmosphere,â&#x20AC;? he said.

TEHRAN - Iran said on Monday it had successfully test-fired two long-range missiles during a naval exercise in the Gulf, flexing its military muscle to show it could hit Israel and U.S. bases in the region if attacked.

In response to mounting Western pressure over its nuclear ambitions, Iran started a naval drill in the Gulf last week and warned that it could shut the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions were imposed on its oil exports, the country’s main revenue source.

The 10 days of naval wargames and the warning over the Strait, a narrow Gulf shipping lane through which 40 percent of world oil passes, have rattled oil markets and pushed up crude

prices.

Analysts say Iran’s increasingly strident rhetoric is aimed at sending a message to the West that it should think twice about the economic cost of putting further pressure on Tehran. “We have successfully test-fired longrange shore-to-sea and surfaceto-surface missiles, called Qader (capable) and Nour (Light) today,” Deputy Navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi told state television.

Tehran denies Western accusations that it is trying to build atomic bombs, saying it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.

Lee Myung-bak’s comments in a nationally televised speech come as the young son of the late Kim Jong Il takes power in North Korea as Supreme Commander of the military and ruling party leader after Kim’s death last month. The North vowed Sunday in a New Year’s message that it would bolster its military and defend the son, Kim Jong Un, “unto death.”

“The situation on the Korean peninsula is now entering a new turning point,” Lee said. “But there should be a new opportunity amid

changes and uncertainty.”

Lee warned that South Korea would sternly respond to any North Korean provocation. In 2010, 50 South Koreans died in attacks blamed on the North, though the Koreas have met in recent months for preliminary nuclear discussions.

North Korea, which has tested two atomic devices since 2006, has said it wants to return to longstalled six-nation talks on halting its nuclear weapons program in return for aid. Washington and Seoul,

however, have insisted that the North first show progress on past disarmament commitments.

If North Korea halts its continuing nuclear activities, Lee said in his speech, negotiations could resume.

“We are ready to resolve security concerns on the Korean peninsula and provide assistance to revive North Korea’s economy through agreements in the six-nation talks,” Lee said.

North Korea, however, has so far taken a hard line toward the South. It warned last week that there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea’s government after Kim Jong Il’s death. North Korea’s powerful National Defense Commission said the country would never deal with Lee.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Facing colossal odds in the Republican nomination race, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann cast her struggle in Biblical terms on Sunday in a late attempt to win over conservative voters.

Bachmann spoke from the pulpit of a small church in rural Iowa, telling the congregation about a small group of Israelites who emerged victorious from a battle in which they were outmatched in numbers and weaponry.

“I admonish you, don’t for one moment think that your adversity is one that cannot be scaled,” said Bachmann, who has been beset by a

series of setbacks, most recently her sixth-place finish in an influential poll on Saturday.

Several “Amens” rang out in the Jubilee Family Church when congresswoman Bachmann said the Israelites’ victory was due to their faith in God, who smote their foes.

The Iowa-born Bachmann, 55, was once a leading light for evangelical voters in Iowa, which on Tuesday holds the nation’s first voting contest to pick a candidate to challenge President Barack Obama in 2012.

She shot to the top of polls of Republicans in August after winning the Ames straw poll in the state but is now fast losing support from conservatives to former Pennsylva-

nia Senator Rick Santorum.

After the church service, Bachmann, fresh off of a 99-county, 7,000-mile tour of Iowa, said the only endorsement she is after is that of people of Iowa.

“That’s why we saw literally thousands of people in cafes and homes all across Iowa make a decision on the spot that they will be supporting me ... because they want someone who they can trust. I am a real, authentic Iowan.”

“She has my vote, now,” said Tony Hol, a 46-year-old farmer who lives near Oskaloosa. “I’ve listened to other candidates and listened to her. She doesn’t change her story with different audiences. And that is very important to me,” said Hol.

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened the first trade in 2012 at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) here, Monday.

“I officially declare the first trade in 2012 opens at the Indonesian Stock Exchange,” said the president. The trade opening ceremony was marked by the president`s pressing a touch screen followed by the sounding of sirens marking the opening of the first stock trade in 2012.

The president in his remarks sent his congratulation and best regards to every IDX staff member who had worked hard all this time.

Besides the IDX staff, the president also thanked all stock market regulators and market participants.

“Thanks to every economic participants, along with the government we have built a well performed country`s economy,” said the president.

Freeport Indonesia union says delays return to work Reuters

JAKARTA - Workers at Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold Inc’s Indonesia unit delayed their return after a three-month strike because 500 employees of sub-contractors lack job security, a senior union official said Monday.

The workers hope to resolve the dispute and start heading back to the Grasberg mine in the central highlands of Papua island, eastern Indonesia, Tuesday, said

union spokesman Virgo Solossa by telephone.

“It’s likely that we will be back to work tomorrow as around 500 workers from several sub-

contractor companies still have issues that need to be settled first.

Today we want to make sure that all contractors have no issues,” Solossa said.

The strike at the world’s secondlargest copper mine shook labor relations in Southeast Asia’s largest economy because it was a highprofile attempt by workers to gain a larger share of the rewards in a booming economy.

Three named suspects over shiite buildings torching Antara

SAMPANG - Sampang police have named three people as the main suspects over last Thursday`s (Dec 29) torching of a number of Shiite community buildings, and arrested one of them.

“The name of the suspect we have been able to arrest is Musrikan, We took him in last night,” Senior Commissioner Rahmat Mulyana, public relations officer of the East Java Police Headquarters, told the press at the Sampang district police office here Saturday.

A Sunni crowd on Thursday rampaged through Sampang district`s Karang Gayam village and set fire to the house of the Shiite community leader, a Shiite prayer house and school building.

The two other main suspects - Muhlis and

Sawir, were still at large and had been put on the police`s list of wanted persons, Rahmat said.

The police determined the suspects after conducting an investigation into the incident and questioning 15 out of 21 people they had planned to interview.

“The suspects, if proven quilty, face a maximum jail sentence of five years under articles 170 and 178 of the Criminal Code,” Rahmat said.

The mob action in Karang Gayam village forced 270 out of the 351 Shiite residents of the village to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. They were eventually given shelter at the Wijata Kusuma sports stadium located near the Sampang district chief`s office.

Relations between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Sampang have been marked by mutual intolerance since 2006 and last Thursday`s riot was triggered by a proselytizing dispute.

The strike ended on December 14 with a deal under which Freeport agreed to a pay increase of roughly 40 percent for around 8,000 union members and to a framework for a better deal for roughly 15,000 other non-union workers and contractors.

Arizona-based Freeport earlier said it expected full operations at the Grasberg mine to resume in early 2012.

The union has not returned to work largely because of a dispute with contractor PT Kuala Pelabuhan Indonesia (KPI) over possible sanctions on workers who took part in the strike. Last week KPI agreed to rehire about 700 workers who went on strike with no sanctions, the union said.

Monday’s dispute appeared to be similar to the union’s with KPI.

Jamilah repatriated to Indonesia after being pardoned Antara

JIDDA - Jamilah binti Abidin Rofi`i who was to be sentenced to death for murder had been repatriated to Indonesia on Dec. 28, 2011, after obtaining a pardon from the victim`s family, the Indonesian Embassy here said.

The embassy in its press statement received by Antaranews here on Sunday said that Jamilah was sentenced to death by the Saudi authorities after she murdered her employer, Salim Al-Ruqi, in 2007.

Jamilah who hailed from Cianjur, West Java, worked as an illegal domestic helper with a family of Salim Al Ruqi in Mecca after she left her first employer.

She was detained by the Saudi authorities on charges of murdering her employer, found guilty and sentenced to death by the Mecca high court on March 19, 2009 which was upheld by the Supreme Court of the Saudi Kingdom.

After several endeavors by the Indonesian consulate general in Jidda, the victim`s family gave Jamilah a pardon in May 2011. With the pardon, Jamilah was freed from the threat of execution.

After completing all the requirements and processes in accordance with the regulations in force in the Saudi Kingdom, Jamilah was then moved from a Mecca jail to a Jidda prison, where preparations were made for her deportation.

Balinese Culture Wajik (Rice Flour Cake with Palm Sugar)

Balinese Characters:

From Palm-leaf to Keyboards Probably, you have watched or are going to watch arja operetta or Ramayana Ballet during the visit in Bali. It would be more convenient if it is enjoyed while having dinner of Balinese cuisine.

At the same time, you watch the beauty of culture and taste the delicacy of local culinary. You may hear the language spoken by players or puppeteer was not understandable. Of course, it is Balinese language.

As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time.

At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Javanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from historical aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elementary school to senior high school. It is becoming the re-

sponsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages.

Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language.

Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for commer-

cial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation.

Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots.

Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings.

Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese characters now can be made easy by Bali Simbar font. It is the innovative thinking of I Made Suatjana (1986) lies behind the composing of this font. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Microsoft Word. Hopefully, there would be more creative software helping the development and learning of Balinese language so it would not come into extinction or be far left behind with the modern life. Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked.

Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated.

Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve.

Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. If you are using a steamer to cook the rice, line the bottom with a wet cloth to prevent the rice grains from falling through. (www.baliguide.com/balifood)

Sate Lilit (Minced Seafood Satay) Overview: This probably the most delicious satay you will ever encounter. The delicate flavors of the shrimp and fish are greatly improved if you can find spears of fresh lemongrass to use as skewers, and if you can cook them over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal. Nonetheless, even with wooden skewers and a standard charcoal grill, you will have people coming back more.

Ingredients: 600 gr skinned boneless snapper fillet 1 cup freshly grated coconut or 1½ cups moistened desiccated coconut ½ cup seafood spice paste 5 fragrant lime leaves, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, finely crushed 1 tsp salt 3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped 2 tbsp palm sugar Lemon grass or satay skewers Preparation: 1. Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or with a chopper.

2. Add all other ingredients & mix well.

3. Mould a heaped tablespoon full of this mixture around a wooden skewer or over trimmed stalks of lemon grass and grill over charcoal until golden brown.

Cruise’s ‘Mission’ stays on top with $31.3 million Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — Tom Cruise’s new mission remains impossible to beat at the box office. Studio estimates Sunday placed “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” in the No. 1 spot for the second-straight weekend with $31.3 million. With a $134.1 million domestic total, it’s the first $100 million hit with Cruise in the lead role since 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III.” The Paramount release led a solid New Year’s weekend as Hollywood managed fair business to end a sluggish year on a more promising note for 2012. Domestic revenues closed out at $10.22 billion for 2011, down 3.4 percent from 2010’s, according to boxoffice tracker Hollywood.com.

That was a slight improvement over Hollywood.com’s projections a week earlier, when Hollywood was limping through the normally busy holiday season with a lineup of underachieving movies.

“This week was a pleasant surprise,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “Last week, we were really pretty gloom and doom, but this final push at the end of the year was stronger than expected. It’s a good way to head into 2012, with at least a little bit of momentum at the box office.”

Still, movie admissions were down sharply for the second year in a row. Factoring in higher ticket prices, domestic attendance slipped to 1.28 billion in 2011, off 4.2 percent from 2010 admissions and the smallest audiences Hollywood has had since 1995, according to Hollywood.com.

Hollywood started the year in a deep rut, with domestic revenues trailing 2010’s by 20 percent or more as a weak first quarter fell far short of the previous year’s spectacular results for the sci-fi sensation “Avatar.”

Studios nearly dug themselves out from that deficit over the summer, but business lagged through the fall and holidays as audiences had a ho-hum response to most movies.

Some studio executives had predicted record revenues for 2011. NEW YORK — Hugh Jackman has left Broadway with a lot of broken hearts — and records. The hunky Australian actor’s one-man Broadway concert show closed on Sunday afternoon at the Broadhurst Theatre after having earned $2,057,354 in its final week, the highest weekly gross recorded by the Shubert Organization, which owns the Broadhurst and 16 other Broadway theaters.

Over its 10-week run, Jackman earned a whopping $14,638,428, producers said. He now owns 10 of the 11 top grossing weeks at the Broadhurst.

Jackman, best known for being the hairy Wolverine in “The X-Men” franchise, routinely sold out the 1,176-seat theater and usually posted weekly grosses of $1.5 million, often higher than rival musicals such as “Jersey Boys,” ‘’Mama Mia!” ‘’How to Succeed in Business,” ‘’Anything Goes” and “Follies.”

Only “Wicked” and “The Lion King,” produced by other organizations, consistently outdid Jackman.

But those shows also had much higher overhead costs.

The previous record at the Broadhurst was held by the Al Pacino-led “The Merchant of Venice,” which took in $1,175,750 earlier this year.

Until now, the Shubert Organization’s one-week biggest haul was “Billy Elliot,” which earned $1,663,895 during an eight-show stretch last year.

LOS ANGELES - Soul singer Etta James, who is terminally ill with leukemia, has been taken off a respirator and is breathing on her own again, her friend and manager said. Lupe De Leon said the “At Last” singer, 73, is soon expected to leave the intensive care unit of a hospital near her home in Riverside, east of Los Angeles.

“Robotics reduce or eliminate physical loading upon our therapists. It creates an interesting and interactive environment which offers consistency and objectivity to the treatment programme,” he said. Using the machines, therapists are able to precisely monitor the patient’s progress and calibrate the machines accordingly.

The “Lokomat” gait trainer shows a movie-like avatar, controlled by the patient’s movements, walking around a virtual world collecting medals. Such machines are particularly suited for countries with rapidly ageing populations, said Bala Rajaratnam, a lecturer at the School of Health Sciences at Nanyang Polytechnic.

“It allows therapists to use smart technology to both empower clients to take control over their recovery as well as maximise therapy time,” he said.

NEW YORK - Along with mother’s cooking and the family dog, regular exercise is too often among the childish things young adults leave behind when they make the move from home to college. Attention should be paid to this drop off, experts say, because those inactive in youth tend to remain inactive over their lifetime.

“The transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a person’s life,” according to Dr. Matthew Kwan, a researcher at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Kwan said campaigns tend to focus on increasing activity in adults.

“That’s important, but it’s when declines have already occurred,” he said. “This is a critical period where we can actually intervene.”

In a recent study that followed 683 Canadian adolescents from 12 to 15 years old for 12 years, researchers headed by Kwan found a 24 percent decrease in physical activity from adolescence to early adulthood.

The research, which appeared in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed declines were steepest among young men entering university or college. Kwan said it might be a consequence of the big drop off in organized sports activity after high school.

“Team sports, varsity activities tend to decrease or drop off entirely,” he explained.

“For those who go to college, studies become more important. Then there’s the social aspect that eats up their disposable time as well.” Women, already less active in high school, showed only a modest decline in physical activity. “It may be that girls experience the greatest declines earlier in adolescence,” Kwan said.

LG to present world’s largest OLED TV at CES CONSUMER electronics company LG Electronics will show off the world’s largest OLED TV at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The 55” OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TV has an amazingly thin 4mm profile, a barely-there bezel and weighs just 7.5kg.

It also sports the company’s 4-Color Pixels and Color Refiner features which help to produce natural and accurate colors (in red, green blue and white). LG comments that these features provide a superior viewing experience compared to the RGB (red, green and blue) setup used by other manufacturers.

“Working closely with LG Display, we have a product which not only delivers on all the advantages of OLED over LCD but at a significantly lower cost than what could be achieved using existing OLED manufacturing

technologies,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment and LG is very focused on making this exciting technology as easy as possible for consumers to embrace.”

The 55” OLED TV -- which is rumored to be landing in stores in Q4, 2012 -- will be shown at CES alongside LG’s massive Ultra Definition (aka “4K”) 3840 x 2160 pixels 84-inch 3D TV. The huge TV will also come equipped with voice recognition.

Rival TV maker Samsung has released a video teaser that hints at its CES TV lineup.

Yi set to join reigning champion Mavericks: report Agence France Presse

Chinese star forward Yi Jianlian has agreed to a one-year NBA deal with the reigning champion Dallas Mavericks, according to reports on Sunday on ESPN and in Dallas area newspapers.

Yi, who suffered a knee injury while playing for Guangdong Southern Ti-

gers, will report to the Texas Legends developmental-league squad to improve his conditioning before joining the Mavericks.

The Legends are coached by Del Harris, who guided Chinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2004 Olympic squad to an eighth-place showing at Athens.

In four NBA seasons with Milwaukee, New Jersey and Washington, Yi has

averaged 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time a game. Last season, he averaged 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds for Washington.

)HUUDUL FRQ‫ۋ‬GHQW WR ‫ۋ‬JKWEDFN LQ FERRARI is confident that the technical restructuring and staff changes it undertook during a disappointing 2011 campaign are now paying off as it strives to get back on terms with chief rivals Red Bull and McLaren this year.

The Scuderia finished a distant third in the constructors’ championship and scored just one win - Fernando Alonso’s at Silverstone in July. From early on in 2011 it was clear that Ferrari’s 150 Italia had been too conservative a design, struggled to warm up the harder compound Pirelli tyres and its development suffered from poor correlation with the team’s wind tunnel data.

But Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says internal restructuring that included the hiring of Pat Fry, who replaced Aldo Costa as technical direc-

tor last June, resolved a lot of these issues and is now beginning to show results as the team ramps up its assault on 2012.

“When we see the stopwatch at the first qualifying for the first race, then we will know the answer,” said Domenicali, “but I see some things that give us optimism that we are doing a reasonable job.

“We try to look ahead and change the organisation in order to make sure in terms of ideas and teamwork in the technical office, the work of the windtunnel and simulation, we are more prepared.

I’m optimistic because of this.

“Then, as always, we know that the first result where we compare our job with our main competitors is the first qualifying for the first race. But we are

working in the right direction.”

In an interview AUTOSPORT conducted with Fry in December, the Englishman himself said that the correlation of data with the windtunnel was improving.

“You are never going to get perfect correlation,” said Fry. “It’s a constantly evolving thing. But we’ve learned a lot and we are improving. We are getting better. Even with track testing, you’d want that correlation, but once you can use mathematical modelling to analyse the car and work out what’s quicker, that also allows you to make better decisions.”

Fry also promised that the design team largely responsible for last year’s car had been encouraged to be more adventurous with the 2012 machine.

Leonid Novitskiy won the opening stage of the 2012 Dakar Rally, which also included a fatality in the motorcycle section and early trouble for last year’s winner Nasser Al-Attiyah.

The relatively short 57-kilometre Mar del Plata to Santa Rosa stage was marred by the death of bike competitor Jorge Boero, who suffered a fall at the 55km point and went into cardiac arrest. Medical crews attended within five minutes, but were unable to save the Argentinean’s life.

2011 car winner Al-Attiyah, now driving for Robby Gordon’s Hummer team following Volkswagen’s departure, lost nine minutes on the stage when his engine lost oil pressure.

Gordon stopped and towed his team-mate to the finish.

“We will see, but this does not look good,” admitted AlAttiyah. “And, whatever happens, this is not a good way to start the Dakar.”

With their likely main rivals in trouble, X-Raid’s Minis filled the top three at the end of the stage, with Novitskiy five seconds ahead of Krzysztof Holowczyc and nine in front of Stephane Peterhansel.

“Today’s special was very short, so we put the pedal on the metal, especially in the sandy sector,” said Novitskiy.

“We only found another car on the course, but I was able to overtake it without any problems. In short: a good result for a perfect day.” Giniel de Villiers’ Toyota and Gordon complete the early top five.
