‘Jason Bourne’ Scores With $60 Million Debut, ‘Bad Moms’ Hits Big

LOS ANGELES - Audiences turned out in force to see Matt Damon in “Jason Bourne,” pushing the spy sequel to a sterling $60 million debut.

The film marked the actor’s return to the action franchise after a nine-year hiatus, during which he repeatedly hinted that he might be done with his most popular role.

He and director Paul Greengrass argued that 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum” had brought the character full circle by filling in him on the shadowy bureaucratic maneuvers

that transformed him into a killing machine. What was left?

Be it creative spark or big paydays, the pair were somehow lured back to the series. That’s good news for Universal, which ran the risk of losing a Tiffany franchise without Damon’s involvement. In the interim, the studio had made an ill-conceived attempt at cin-

ematic universe building with “The Bourne Legacy,” introducing Jeremy Renner as another amnesic ass-kicker dubbed Aaron Cross.

The crowds didn’t exactly flock to see this sub-Bourne, and the film grossed about $150 million less than “The Bourne Ultimatum” globally.

As a sign of Damon’s appeal, audience surveys reveal that the actor’s presence above-the-title was the second most frequently cited reason that people turned up for “Jason Bourne.”

“It’s no secret that people were anticipating a reunion of [Damon and Greengrass],” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief, adding “Putting the team back together made smart business sense.”

“Jason Bourne” marks the series’ second highest opening, behind “The Bourne Ultimatum’s” $69.3 million debut. When adjusted for inflation, however, it trails all but “The Bourne Legacy’s” opening weekends. Universal spent $120 million to make the latest installment and released it in 4,026 theaters.

“It proves that this is a franchise that’s still viable and that it can continue if they want to keep making them,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “’Jason Bourne’ is the perfect title for this film, because that’s who everyone wanted to see return.” (rtr)

Indonesian police uncover child exploitation racket in Bali

JAKARTA - The Indonesian National Police have exposed a child exploitation racket at a spa in Bali, Head of Sub III Directorate General of the Crime Agency of the Criminal Investigation Police, Commissioner Umar Surya Fana stated.

“As many as 12 girls, aged between 13 and 15 years, were employed as therapists at the spa,” Fana revealed here on Monday.

The commissioner remarked that the police were investigating the case involving the perpetrators, who were exploiting the girls and were responsible for the establishment of the company.

The case unfolded when the

police received an initial tip-off on the alleged trafficking of people in one of the spas on Bali Islands.

The police then conducted a search operation and found two 14-year-old girls at the spa.

“During the operation, we found 12 girls working as therapists at the spa. The girls are from Lampung, Central Java, East Java, and Kalimantan,” he remarked.

The perpetrators will face multiple charges of violating the Child Protection Law, with a minimum sentence of five years and the Human Trafficking Law, with a minimum prison term of three years.

“We do not want the judges to sentence the perpetrators to three years in prison,” he affirmed.

He pointed out that the victims were deceived by their recruiters, who lured them with salaries of up to Rp20 million per month and a bonus amounting to Rp100 thousand for each therapy. “The victims are free to return to their homes whenever

they want,” he remarked.

Fana noted that the children, in reality, earned only Rp6 million per month and received a bonus of Rp10 thousand for each therapy.

“They were forced to work 24 hours a day. They were not allowed to leave the shelter,” he emphasized.

The children were taken from their respective regions and were trained in Jakarta, to be placed in Bali. Fana said the police have identified three suspects: a recruiter, owner of the temporary shelter and the exploiter.

However, the police have yet to find evidence of a syndicate as the

suspects work independently.

“The victims are being rehabilitated at Balis Social Services Department. The victims will act as witnesses in this case. Many Calonarang performances even stage the storyline like the Dukuh Suladri, Sunda Upasunda and others. By and large, the storyline of the Dukuh Suladri or Sunda Upasunda is presented in the prembon operetta. However, the characters in the storyline of Dukuh Suladri and Sunda Upasunda show many differences from that of Calonarang.

“In the later development amid the community, as long as there is rerancaban of Pandung-Rangda in the storyline it has been referred to as Calonarang, whereas the performance of the Calonarang has its own story,” he explained. School bus for underprivileged children SINGARAJA —

The Buleleng Education Agency increased the attention to underprivileged children remaining to attend school in North Bali. One of the facilities initiated is through the provision of school bus. The government would like to prevent dropout rates by providing services for children originating from underprivileged families.

According to the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, the basic learning needs of every child is required to encourage the advancement of education. Constraints related to the area and distance to school is highlighted by the government. Thus, the provision of school bus is the closest solution other than the economic factors.

“We are trying to get closer by classifying children in the countryside.

First of all, it is regarding the children that really desire to attend school, children with physical disabilities, economic constraint and distance of the school. We are still considering giving an offer to 15 children of TingaTinga village, Gerokgak, facing distance constraint to their school. Our solution is by providing school bus,” he told Bali Post, recently.

He added that technically the school bus will collect the students at particular points at Tinga-Tinga village and subsequently they are delivered to the intended junior high school. “They can come together at a specified point. After that, the school bus will drive up to a certain point of the intended junior high school,” he added.

The other schools in the Gerokgak subdistrict are still being studied by the Buleleng Education Agency. The use of school bus is considered more efficient. In the meantime, the village having one or two underprivileged children going to school will be re-considered with the use of motorcycle taxi. Other rural areas like Les village and Julah village will be reviewed by the Education Agency.

“We still find out the regulation on the motorcycle taxi. In the future, the Education Agency would like to invite the individual or corporate social responsibility (CSR). Hopefully, children in rural areas can be helped so as to return to school,” he said. (kmb34)

CHICAGO - Even though many doctors see need for improvement, surgical robots are poised for big gains in operating rooms around the world.

Within five years, one in three U.S. surgeries - more than double current levels - is expected to be performed with robotic systems, with surgeons sitting at computer consoles guiding mechanical arms.

Companies developing new robots also plan to expand their use in India, China and other emerging markets.

Robotic surgery has been long dominated by pioneer Intuitive Surgical Inc, which has more than 3,600 of its da Vinci machines in hospitals worldwide and said last week the number of procedures that used them jumped by 16 percent in the second quarter compared to a year earlier.

The anticipated future growth - and perceived weaknesses of the current generation of robots - is attracting deep-pocketed rivals, including Medtronic Inc and a startup backed by Johnson & Johnson and Google. Developers of the next wave aim to make the robots less expensive, more nimble and capable of performing more types of procedures, company executives and surgeons told Reuters.

Although surgical robots run an average of $1.5 million and entail ongoing maintenance expenses, insurers pay no more for surgeries

that utilize the systems than for other types of minimally-invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy.

Still, most top U.S. hospitals for cancer treatment, urology, gynecology and gastroenterology have made the investment. The robots are featured prominently in hospital marketing campaigns aimed at attracting patients, and new doctors are routinely trained in their use.

Surgical robots are used in hernia repair, bariatric surgery, hysterectomies and the vast majority of prostate removals in the United States, according to Intuitive Surgical data.

Doctors say they reduce fatigue and give them greater precision.

But robot-assisted surgery can take more of the surgeon’s time than traditional procedures, reducing the number of operations doctors can perform. That’s turned off some like Dr. Helmuth Billy.

Billy was an early adopter of Intuitive’s da Vinci system 15 years ago. But equipping its arms with instruments slowed him down. He rarely uses it now.

“I like to do five operations a day,” Billy said. “If I have to constantly dock and undock da Vinci, it becomes cumbersome.” (rtr)

Meter-wide dinosaur print, one of largest ever, found in Bolivia

SUCRE - A footprint measuring over a meter wide that was made by a meat-eating predator some 80 million years ago has been discovered in Bolivia, one of the largest of its kind ever found.

The print, which measures 1.2 meters (1.3 yards) across, probably belonged to the abelisaurus, a biped dinosaur that once roamed South America, said Argentine paleontologist Sebastian Apesteguia, who is studying the find.

kilometers (40 miles) outside the city of Sucre in central Bolivia by a tourist guide earlier this month. The soft clay area near Sucre is well known for dinosaur tracks, and skeletal remains of the abelisaurus have also previously been found in the region.

“This print is bigger than any other we have found to date in the area,” Apesteguia said. “It is a record in size for carnivorous dinosaurs from the end of the Cretaceous period in South America.”(rtr)

Sengap makes FTF visitors double up with laughter

DENPASAR - The last day of Food Truck Festival (FTF) held by the Bali Post Media Group (KMB) in the north parking lot of Lumintang Park on Sunday (Jul. 31) presented some entertainments and contests. After commenced with mass aerobic gym by Lala Studio in the morning, it was then followed with entertainment by Balinese comedian ‘Golden Sengap’ and kid coloring contest by BaliTV. In the afternoon, it was resumed with modern dance competition by Denpost and mass yoga exercise.

Sengap with humorous jokes was able to make the FTF visitors double up with laughter due to his hilarity. Although appearing in front of children getting involved in coloring contest, the public performing jogging in the area of Lumintang Park also vivaciously witnessed the hilarity of Sengap.

Amid his jokes, Sengap was quite prideful of the FTF activities. In addition to presenting culinary treasures in the center of Denpasar, various entertainments and competitions are also held to jazz up. The FTF is an event that can be enjoyed by all

circles ranging from children to adults. He hoped the FTF event can be held annually, not only by the media, but also by the government.

At the same time, Sengap expressed his gratitude to the KMB that has given space to Balinese artists to make their performance in Denpasar to entertain Balinese people. DENPASAR - In accordance with the plan, Edy Hartaka serving as the legal counsel of the death row of the couple Heru Hendriyanto and Putu Anita Sukra Dewi finally submitted their judicial review to the Denpasar District Court. They were transferred from Karangasem Prison to the Denpasar District Court, Friday (Jul. 29).

Heru hoped his judicial review could be granted because he promised to be a good person. “I hope the best because I want to learn how to be a good person,” said Heru.

Pursuant to the procedures, the couple sentenced to death was accompanied by their legal counsel Edy Hartaka and entered the court clerk room to file the judicial review. The file was received by Deputy of Denpasar District Court criminal registrar, I Made Sukarta. Not long after the submission of the judicial review, Heru and Anita were hurriedly taken back to Karangasem Prison with the escort of police, prison officers and the officers of the Karangasem Prosecutor’s Office.

When asked about the content of the judicial review, Edy Hartaka explained that the submission is not necessarily due to the presence of new evidence. “However, we assess here there is an oversight of the judges in deciding the case,” said Edy. With the judicial review, he hoped there is a change in the subsequent decision.

“Although without payment, I will continuously fight as much as possible to help my clients. This has become the responsibility of a lawyer,” continued Edy while saying that it is meant to free his clients from death penalty.

In the facts of the trial, said Edy, both convicted persons had indeed been proved to have murdered a family. However, he hoped at least the punishment can be relieved because some countries have abolished the death penalty. “It is not a crime of terrorism. What committed by the defendants is wrong, namely murder.

However, it is different from the terrorist crime,” he continued.

Edy said that Heru and Anita asked him to fight for a lighter sentence. At least, said Edy, their punishment could be extenuated into a life sentence. “They leave a message in order to strive to get leniency. They admitted to have repented and hoped it can become a life sentence. Most importantly, they can guide their children currently being entrusted at orphanages,” he said.

Heru Hendriyanto and Putu Anita Sukra Dewi were sentenced to death for murdering a family at Kampial Residence, Badung on February 16, 2014. In addition to this couple, the other convicts such as Abdul Kodir and Syafaat were also sentenced to death. They murdered the family of Made Purnabawa, Ni Luh Ayu Sri Mahayoni (wife) and their daughter Ni Wayan Risna Ayu Dewi. (kmb37)

DENPASAR - The entrepreneurs coalesced into the members of the national construction contractors association of Indonesia (Gapensi) of Bali and the district/municipality objected to the closure of the illegal quarries throughout Bali. The closure has an impact on the scarcity of project materials such as sand and stone.

Thus, a number of government projects are feared to be unable to be completed on time.

“We are bound by a contract, in particular the time. Well ... if the time is over, we cannot afford to fulfill the target. Automatically there will be problems either in the form of fines or criminal suits,” said Chairman of the Gapensi Buleleng, Nyoman Gede Wandira Adi, after delivering a shared aspiration of Gapensi Bali and the district/municipality, Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Bali and Construction Services Development Institute to the Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives in the parliamentary building, Friday (Jul. 29).

By percentage, Wandira said that currently there is only 35 percent of quarry location remaining to operate, while the rest have been closed due to having no license. It means there is a shortage of material to nearly 70 percent.

In the meantime, the government projects being worked on should have been handed over at least in December.

“Necessarily, we should get ten trucks, but currently just get three trucks. Automatically it has a delay impact on the projects, not to mention the price, and so on. These are the impacts,” he explained. Wandira did not dismiss that all this time he meets the project material needs from the licensed and unlicensed quarrying ventures. He admitted the price obtained from the illegal quarry is cheaper.

“These (illegal quarries—Ed) are in large numbers, probably they reach hundreds. Generally most local people having one to three hectares of land do not have permit. In the meantime, those having tens or hundreds of hectares have owned clear license because they make real investment,” he explained.

As the user of quarrying materials, Wandira hoped the government would like to ‘close its eyes.’ In other words, when wishing to close the illegal quarrying activities, it should not result in chaos and commotion.

Responding to the concerns of the construction entrepreneurs, Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nengah Tamba, said that he will cross-check to the field on Monday (Aug.1). He will check whether there is a shortage of materials in the field due to the closure of illegal quarrying activities.

Besides, he is going to verify the price hike of the material as the impact of the scarcity.

“After that (checking in the field—Ed), we will formulate what decisions to be taken.

BANGLI - Batur Caldera Geopark will soon be revalidated by assessor team from the UNESCO. In accordance with the schedule, the revalidation will take place for three days starting on Monday (Aug. 1). In the meantime, ahead of the geopark revalidation, the government of Bangli has been busy cleaning up plastic waste in the region of Batur caldera since Thursday. In addition to deploying employees, the clean-up activities to collect plastic waste were also carried out by involving Pokdarwis and local students.

Operations Manager of Batur Geopark who is also Regional Secretary of Bangli, Ida Bagus Giri Putra, explained on Friday (Jul. 29) that ahead of the implementation of the geopark revalidation his office has prepared the materials to be presented from the past two weeks. In addition, since Thursday (Jul. 28) his office has started field preparation by holding clean-up activities in the area of the Batur caldera.

Giri Putra admitted the matter of plastic waste becomes the main challenges faced

in this revalidation. On that account, since the past few days, his office has mobilized all the employees and students, including tourism players, to take action by cleaning up the waste in the caldera. “In the past our main problem is mining, but now it’s plastic waste,” he said.

He added that in the revalidation of the Batur Geopark, Bangli will be visited by the assessor team of the UNESCO consisting of two people. They are from France and Japan. Object of the assess-

ment in the revalidation will be regarding the success after the geopark was assigned in 2012. “We will present the development since 2012 to the assessor team,” he explained.

In addition to be provided with exposure, the assessor team will also be given the opportunity to review the number of geosite.

One of the geosites to be reviewed by the team is the lava cave. “We’ve prepared which geosites to be visited,” he said.

In the revalidation, Giri Putra hoped the caldera geopark can remain in the green card. In addition, he also wanted the Batur caldera geopark can get the attention from the state. “We expect it can become a national strategic area, so that later on all the funds of the ministry can be obtained.

BEIJING - China’s leadership is resisting pressure from elements within the military for a more forceful response to an international court ruling against Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea, sources said, wary of provoking a clash with the United States.

China refused to participate in the case overseen by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

It denounced the emphatic July 12 ruling in favour of the Philippines as a farce that had no legal basis and part of an anti-China plot cooked up in Washington.

The ruling has been followed in China by a wave of nationalist sentiment, scattered protests and strongly worded editorials in state media.

So far, Beijing has not shown any sign of wanting to take stronger action. Instead, it has called for a peaceful resolution through talks at the same time as promising to

defend Chinese territory.

But some elements within China’s increasingly confident military are pushing for a stronger - potentially armed - response aimed at the United States and its regional allies, according to interviews with four sources with close military and leadership ties.

“The People’s Liberation Army is ready,” one source with ties to the military told Reuters.

“We should go in and give them a bloody nose like Deng Xiaoping did to Vietnam in 1979,” the source said, referring to China’s brief invasion of Vietnam to punish Hanoi for forcing Beijing’s ally the Khmer Rouge from power in Cambodia.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

President Xi Jinping has assiduously courted and thoroughly cemented his leadership over the PLA and faces no serious challenges to his command.

While he is overseeing sweeping military reforms to improve the PLA’s ability to win wars, he has said China needs a stable external environment as it deals with its own development issues, including a slowing economy. And few people expect any significant move ahead of Xi’s hosting of a G20 summit in September.

But the hardened response to The Hague ruling from some elements of the military increases the risk that any provocative or inadvertent incidents in the South China Sea could escalate into a more serious clash. (rtr)

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump on Sunday of scapegoating the parents of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq, after the Republican nominee took issue with remarks the soldier’s father made at the Democratic National Convention.

Trump, in an ABC interview that aired on Sunday, questioned why Ghazala Khan, mother of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, stood quietly by her husband, Khizr Khan, as he took the stage at last week’s Democratic convention in Philadelphia.

Trump suggested the mother might not have been “allowed” to speak.

Speaking at a church service, Clinton said Trump had been insulting to a family who had sacrificed so much. She also used the episode to contrast her own religious faith with that of Trump, who has spoken of religion on the campaign trail infrequently.

“I don’t begrudge anyone of any other faith or of no faith at all, but I do tremble before those who would scapegoat other Americans, who would insult people because of their religion, their ethnicity, their disability,” Clinton said in remarks at the Imani Temple Ministries, an African-American church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

“It’s just not how I was raised, that’s not how I was taught in my church,” said Clinton, who grew up as a Methodist. “Tim Kaine and I are people of faith,” she said, referring to her vice presidential running mate, who is a Catholic.

Top Republican lawmakers House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also condemned Trump’s remarks in separate statements, although they did not mention their presidential candidate by name.

“Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice. Captain Khan was one such brave example,” Ryan said.

“His sacrifice - and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan - should always be honored. Period.” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, Ghazala Khan took up her own defense in an opinion piece in the Washington Post, saying her husband had asked her in advance whether she would want to speak at the convention but that she had decided she would be unable to do so on stage because of her pain over the 2004 death of her son.

“Donald Trump said that maybe I wasn’t allowed to say anything.

That is not true,” she wrote. “When Donald Trump is talking about Islam, he is ignorant.”

This all fuels the case for the BoE’s first rate cut since 2009 but also highlights the challenge it faces as sterling’s slide since the June 23 vote puts upward pressure on inflation.

“The collapse in the total orders balance ... signals that support from the weaker pound simply is not powerful enough to offset slumping domestic demand,” Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said.

The Markit/CIPS UK manufacturing purchasing managers’ index(PMI) fell to 48.2 in July from 52.4 in June, below an initial “flash” reading reported in late July of 49.1 and its lowest since February 2013.

Measures of output and new orders also fell below the 50 mark that denotes growth for the first time since early 2013 due to weaker market conditions at home and uncertainty related to the EU referendum.

The output index fell to 47.8 in July from 53.6 in June, its lowest since October 2012, while new orders - which grew robustly in June - suffered their sharpest turnaround since 1998 and fell at their fastest rate in over three years.

Barclays said the purchasing manager survey suggested Britain would enter a recession, contracting by 0.4 percent quarter on quarter at the end of September and by 0.3

percent in the fourth quarter. That would be followed by “a prolonged and shallow contraction”, it said.

RATE CUT COMING Almost all economists polled

by Reuters expect the Bank of England to cut interest rates by at least 25 basis points on Thursday, but they were split on whether the Bank would restart its bond-buying programme. ] Average purchase prices rose at their fastest pace in five years, with companies citing higher commodity prices and higher import prices, the latter due to the weaker currency.

The carved works are specifically made for

Balinese traditional buildings and include door panels gebyog and gedong style door panels, and lodge and bale dangin or eastern pavilion carvings. Carvings are also made for sacred buildings like shrines and temples. These buildings are all equipped with traditional carvings from pillar, bottom chords, to knee braces, hip rafters, rises, trusses and others.

“The uniqueness of Sumita village carvings lie in the harmony of the style of carving shapes, so that from a distance it does not look too small nor too small close up” explained Suyadnyana.

Interestingly, although many of the carvers here are self-taught and some have had the skills passed down to them or learned at art school, the results of their carvings are nearly all the same as if their were a common spirit guiding them. “Carving in Sumita village provides a livelihood for many people and allows people to pay for their children’s tuition” he said.

For many Balinese people, carving is indeed considered a regular activity, while in the eyes of most foreigners carving is viewed as an artistic attraction. In fact, there are even walking or bicycle tours that pass through Sumita village so that visitors can see this unique activity and the charm of this village.

There are tourist accommodations located within the village so that visitors can enjoy a longer stay in this rural atmosphere. “The potential of Sumita village to become one of Gianyar’s tourism villages, is greatly supported by the precence of the wood carvers” said a hopeful villager. Taliban claim Kabul truck bomb blast

KABUL - The Taliban claimed responsibility for a truck bomb attack on a military and logistics services compound, mainly used by foreigners, in Kabul early on Monday after a powerful explosion was heard all around the city.

However, casualties appear to have been limited despite the unusually loud blast from the explosion at about 1.30 a.m. local time (2100 GMT Sunday).

Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said the incident ended with one attacker killed when his vehicle detonated and two other attackers killed by police. One police officer was killed and four were wounded.

As day broke, gunfire and occasional explosions rang out over the industrial zone where security forces had taken up positions near the Northgate Hotel, a secure residential compound for foreign military and civilian organizations.

The attack on a hotel the Taliban said was a “place of vulgarity and profanity” was the latest in a series against foreign targets in Kabul, underlining precarious security in Afghanistan, even in the capital.

It came around a week after the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a demonstration by members of the mainly Shi’ite Hazara minority, killing at least 80 people.

The Taliban, who say that foreign “invaders” must leave Afghanistan but who often say they want to avoid civilian casualties, said the compound was not near homes and that ordinary people were not harmed.

Security officials originally said four attackers were at the site, a walled compound of a type typically used by foreign security and civilian organizations in Kabul, even though police later said that only three attackers had been killed.

The Taliban claimed there were “dozens of dead and wounded”. The Islamist group often exaggerates the extent of attacks it launches against Afghan government and foreign security targets.

After the attack, Afghan security forces closed off streets around the site, which is east of Kabul’s main international airport and on the way to the sprawling Bagram air base north of the capital. (rtr)

The 11 soldiers were part of a group which launched an attack on a hotel where Erdogan was holidaying on the night of July 15 in the southwestern resort of Marmaris.

The president, having been tipped off that he was in danger, had fled the hotel by the time they arrived.

Their capture came after Turkey dismissed nearly 1,400 more members of its armed forces and stacked a top military council with government ministers on Sunday in moves to tighten control of the military after the coup.

JAKARTA — Indonesia will mark its Independence Day later this month by sinking as many as 71 foreign vessels that were seized for fishing illegally in the country’s waters. Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said Monday that boats from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and China will be sunk simultaneously at several locations on the Aug. 17 national holiday.

Many of the boats were captured off Indonesia’s Natuna Islands in the southern reaches of the South China Sea. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation, has taken a hard-

line stance against illegal fishing since President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo took office in 2014. Pudjiastuti has overseen the destruction of more than 170 illegal fishing boats from several countries. Indonesia blew up more than 20 foreign vessels in April but Pudjiastuti said that method won’t be used for the upcoming sinkings. The ships will be kept intact and will form artificial reefs, she said.

Faulty stopwatch adds to Rosberg’s Germany woes

HOCKENHEIM - The stopwatch never lies they say in Formula One but in Nico Rosberg’s case it did and that was one of several things which went wrong for the German in a woeful home race on Sunday.

Rosberg was hit with a five-second time penalty for forcing Max Verstappen off the track in his bid to overtake the Red Bull on lap 29 of the 67-lap race at Hockenheim.

But when the Mercedes driver pulled into the pits, he was stationary for eight seconds instead of the required five.

“Stopwatch failure,” team boss Toto Wolff explained after the race. “The damn thing failed, it didn’t function like it should have done. Once we realised, we had to take it safe and this is why it took longer than normal.”

TORONTO - World number one Novak Djokovic continued his dominance of Kei Nishikori with a 6-3 7-5 victory in the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Sunday.

After clinching his 30th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, Djokovic immediately started to turn his attention to something more elusive, an Olympic gold medal.

In his first tournament since an upset third round loss to American Sam Querrey on the grass of Wimbledon four weeks ago, Djokovic returned to his winning ways and became the first four-time winner of the Rogers Cup. The 29-year-old Serb seized the opening set in just over 30 minutes, and then dug deep during a spirited back and forth in the final stages of the hardcourt match.

“It was a shame to lose but this was my first time final here in Toronto,” Nishikori told the Canadian crowd. “So, it was a great week.”

Djokovic, a 12-time grand slam champion, will now turn his focus to the Rio Olympics, a tournament he has yet to conquer.

He earned a bronze medal in singles at Beijing in 2008 and fell just short of a medal at London in 2012.

Faulty stopwatch adds to Rosberg’s Germany woes

HOCKENHEIM - The stopwatch never lies they say in Formula One but in Nico Rosberg’s case it did and that was one of several things which went wrong for the German in a woeful home race on Sunday.

Rosberg was hit with a five-second time penalty for forcing Max Verstappen off the track in his bid to overtake the Red Bull on lap 29 of the 67-lap race at Hockenheim.

But when the Mercedes driver pulled into the pits, he was stationary for eight seconds instead of the required five.

“Stopwatch failure,” team boss Toto Wolff explained after the race. “The damn thing failed, it didn’t function like it should have done. Once we realised, we had to take it safe and this is why it took longer than normal.”

Taliban claim Kabul truck bomb blast

KABUL - The Taliban claimed responsibility for a truck bomb attack on a military and logistics services compound, mainly used by foreigners, in Kabul early on Monday after a powerful explosion was heard all around the city.

However, casualties appear to have been limited despite the unusually loud blast from the explosion at about 1.30 a.m. local time (2100 GMT Sunday).

Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said the incident ended with one attacker killed when his vehicle detonated and two other attackers killed by police. One police officer was killed and four were wounded.

As day broke, gunfire and occasional explosions rang out over the industrial zone where security forces had taken up positions near the Northgate Hotel, a secure residential compound for foreign military and civilian organizations.

The attack on a hotel the Taliban said was a “place of vulgarity and profanity” was the latest in a series against foreign targets in Kabul, underlining precarious security in Afghanistan, even in the capital.

It came around a week after the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a demonstration by members of the mainly Shi’ite Hazara minority, killing at least 80 people.

The Taliban, who say that foreign “invaders” must leave Afghanistan but who often say they want to avoid civilian casualties, said the compound was not near homes and that ordinary people were not harmed.

Security officials originally said four attackers were at the site, a walled compound of a type typically used by foreign security and civilian organizations in Kabul, even though police later said that only three attackers had been killed.

The Taliban claimed there were “dozens of dead and wounded”. The Islamist group often exaggerates the extent of attacks it launches against Afghan government and foreign security targets.

After the attack, Afghan security forces closed off streets around the site, which is east of Kabul’s main international airport and on the way to the sprawling Bagram air base north of the capital. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Indonesia reconsolidated its support to win a seat at the International Civil ticipate in its Technical CommisAviation Organization (ICAO) Council for the 2016-2019 period during the Jakarta-Singapore sion Meetings discussing ICAOs newly drafted regulations.

The 11 soldiers were part of a group which launched an attack on a hotel where Erdogan was holidaying on the night of July 15 in the southwestern resort of Marmaris.

The president, having been tipped off that he was in danger, had fled the hotel by the time they arrived.

Their capture came after Turkey dismissed nearly 1,400 more members of its armed forces and stacked a top military council with government ministers on Sunday in moves to tighten control of the military after the coup.

JAKARTA — Indonesia will mark its Independence Day later this month by sinking as many as 71 foreign vessels that were seized for fishing illegally in the country’s waters. Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said Monday that boats from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and China will be sunk simultaneously at several locations on the Aug. 17 national holiday.

Many of the boats were captured off Indonesia’s Natuna Islands in the southern reaches of the South China Sea. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation, has taken a hard-

line stance against illegal fishing since President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo took office in 2014. Pudjiastuti has overseen the destruction of more than 170 illegal fishing boats from several countries. Indonesia blew up more than 20 foreign vessels in April but Pudjiastuti said that method won’t be used for the upcoming sinkings. The ships will be kept intact and will form artificial reefs, she said.

In March, Indonesia destroyed the Nigeria-flagged Viking with explosives. The ship was wanted around the world for illegally taking toothfish from southern waters. (ant)

This all fuels the case for the BoE’s first rate cut since 2009 but also highlights the challenge it faces as sterling’s slide since the June 23 vote puts upward pressure on inflation.

The Markit/CIPS UK manufacturing purchasing managers’ index(PMI) fell to 48.2 in July from 52.4 in June, below an initial “flash” reading reported in late July of 49.1 and its lowest since February 2013.

Measures of output and new orders also fell below the 50 mark that denotes growth for the first time since early 2013 due to weaker market conditions at home and uncertainty related to the EU referendum.

The output index fell to 47.8 in July from 53.6 in June, its lowest since October 2012, while new orders - which grew robustly in June - suffered their sharpest turnaround since 1998 and fell at their fastest rate in over three years.

Barclays said the purchasing manager survey suggested Britain would enter a recession, contracting by 0.4 percent quarter on quarter at the end of September and by 0.3

percent in the fourth quarter. That would be followed by “a prolonged and shallow contraction”, it said.

RATE CUT COMING Almost all economists polled

Carving requires great patience and perseverance in order to produce a good piece.

The carved works are specifically made for

Balinese traditional buildings and include door panels gebyog and gedong style door panels, and lodge and bale dangin or eastern pavilion carvings. Carvings are also made for sacred buildings like shrines and temples. These buildings are all equipped with traditional carvings from pillar, bottom chords, to knee braces, hip rafters, rises, trusses and others.

“The uniqueness of Sumita village carvings lie in the harmony of the style of carving shapes, so that from a distance it does not look too small nor too small close up” explained Suyadnyana.

Sumita_Village_2 In addition to floral motifs, door panel carvings also include puppet characters from the Ramayana epic, like Sugriva – Subali or from the Mahabharata epic like the Pandavas figures. The wood used in these carvings is teak that is especially brought in from outside of Bali. Jackfruit wood and champak wood are also used for door panels. Other carvings are made from bangkirai, marbau, camphor and other woods.

carve. “Although almost everyone can carve, about 80 percent earn their living this way, while the rest work as civil servants, hotel workers, farmers and other odd jobs”, said this father of two sons.

Interestingly, although many of the carvers here are self-taught and some have had the skills passed down to them or learned at art school, the results of their carvings are nearly all the same as if their were a common spirit guiding them. “Carving in Sumita village provides a livelihood for many people and allows people to pay for their children’s tuition” he said.

For many Balinese people, carving is indeed considered a regular activity, while in the eyes of most foreigners carving is viewed as an artistic attraction. In fact, there are even walking or bicycle tours that pass through Sumita village so that visitors can see this unique activity and the charm of this village.

There are tourist accommodations located within the village so that visitors can enjoy a longer stay in this rural atmosphere. “The potential of Sumita village to become one of Gianyar’s tourism villages, is greatly supported by the precence of the wood carvers” said a hopeful villager. Clinton accuses Trump of scapegoating Muslim soldier’s parents

Gapensi objects if illegal quarries closed

DENPASAR - The entrepreneurs coalesced into the members of the national construction contractors association of Indonesia (Gapensi) of Bali and the district/municipality objected to the closure of the illegal quarries throughout Bali. The closure has an impact on the scarcity of project materials such as sand and stone.

Thus, a number of government projects are feared to be unable to be completed on time.

“We are bound by a contract, in particular the time. Well ... if the time is over, we cannot afford to fulfill the target. Automatically there will be problems either in the form of fines or criminal suits,” said Chairman of the Gapensi Buleleng, Nyoman Gede Wandira Adi, after delivering a shared aspiration of Gapensi Bali and the district/municipality, Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Bali and Construction Services Development Institute to the Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives in the parliamentary building, Friday (Jul. 29).

By percentage, Wandira said that currently there is only 35 percent of quarry location remaining to operate, while the rest have been closed due to having no license. It means there is a shortage of material to nearly 70 percent.

In the meantime, the government projects being worked on should have been handed over at least in December.

“Necessarily, we should get ten trucks, but currently just get three trucks. Automatically it has a delay impact on the projects, not to mention the price, and so on. These are the impacts,” he explained. Wandira did not dismiss that all this time he meets the project material needs from the licensed and unlicensed quarrying ventures. He admitted the price obtained from the illegal quarry is cheaper.

“These (illegal quarries—Ed) are in large numbers, probably they reach hundreds. Generally most local people having one to three hectares of land do not have permit. In the meantime, those having tens or hundreds of hectares have owned clear license because they make real investment,” he explained.

As the user of quarrying materials, Wandira hoped the government would like to ‘close its eyes.’ In other words, when wishing to close the illegal quarrying activities, it should not result in chaos and commotion.

Responding to the concerns of the construction entrepreneurs, Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nengah Tamba, said that he will cross-check to the field on Monday (Aug.1). He will check whether there is a shortage of materials in the field due to the closure of illegal quarrying activities.

Besides, he is going to verify the price hike of the material as the impact of the scarcity.

“After that (checking in the field—Ed), we will formulate what decisions to be taken.

Whether or not we will ask for policy because this discretion is related to the transfer of authority from the district/municipal government to provincial government,” he said.

Tamba added that quarrying activities should indeed be licensed because it has an impact on the environment. However, he also understands about the concerns of the employers because there is a scarcity of project materials. (kmb32)

BANGLI - Batur Caldera Geopark will soon be revalidated by assessor team from the UNESCO. In accordance with the schedule, the revalidation will take place for three days starting on Monday (Aug. 1). In the meantime, ahead of the geopark revalidation, the government of Bangli has been busy cleaning up plastic waste in the region of Batur caldera since Thursday. In addition to deploying employees, the clean-up activities to collect plastic waste were also carried out by involving Pokdarwis and local students.

Operations Manager of Batur Geopark who is also Regional Secretary of Bangli, Ida Bagus Giri Putra, explained on Friday (Jul. 29) that ahead of the implementation of the geopark revalidation his office has prepared the materials to be presented from the past two weeks. In addition, since Thursday (Jul. 28) his office has started field preparation by holding clean-up activities in the area of the Batur caldera.

Giri Putra admitted the matter of plastic waste becomes the main challenges faced

in this revalidation. On that account, since the past few days, his office has mobilized all the employees and students, including tourism players, to take action by cleaning up the waste in the caldera. “In the past our main problem is mining, but now it’s plastic waste,” he said.

He added that in the revalidation of the Batur Geopark, Bangli will be visited by the assessor team of the UNESCO consisting of two people. They are from France and Japan. Object of the assess-

ment in the revalidation will be regarding the success after the geopark was assigned in 2012. “We will present the development since 2012 to the assessor team,” he explained.

In addition to be provided with exposure, the assessor team will also be given the opportunity to review the number of geosite.

One of the geosites to be reviewed by the team is the lava cave. “We’ve prepared which geosites to be visited,” he said.

In the revalidation, Giri Putra hoped the caldera geopark can remain in the green card. In addition, he also wanted the Batur caldera geopark can get the attention from the state. “We expect it can become a national strategic area, so that later on all the funds of the ministry can be obtained.

“Give them a bloody nose”: Xi pressed for stronger S.China Sea response

BEIJING - China’s leadership is resisting pressure from elements within the military for a more forceful response to an international court ruling against Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea, sources said, wary of provoking a clash with the United States.

China refused to participate in the case overseen by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

It denounced the emphatic July 12 ruling in favour of the Philippines as a farce that had no legal basis and part of an anti-China plot cooked up in Washington.

The ruling has been followed in China by a wave of nationalist sentiment, scattered protests and strongly worded editorials in state media.

So far, Beijing has not shown any sign of wanting to take stronger action. Instead, it has called for a peaceful resolution through talks at the same time as promising to

defend Chinese territory.

But some elements within China’s increasingly confident military are pushing for a stronger - potentially armed - response aimed at the United States and its regional allies, according to interviews with four sources with close military and leadership ties.

“The People’s Liberation Army is ready,” one source with ties to the military told Reuters.

“We should go in and give them a bloody nose like Deng Xiaoping did to Vietnam in 1979,” the source said, referring to China’s brief invasion of Vietnam to punish Hanoi for forcing Beijing’s ally the Khmer Rouge from power in Cambodia.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

President Xi Jinping has assiduously courted and thoroughly cemented his leadership over the PLA and faces no serious challenges to his command.

While he is overseeing sweeping military reforms to improve the PLA’s ability to win wars, he has said China needs a stable external environment as it deals with its own development issues, including a slowing economy. And few people expect any significant move ahead of Xi’s hosting of a G20 summit in September.

But the hardened response to The Hague ruling from some elements of the military increases the risk that any provocative or inadvertent incidents in the South China Sea could escalate into a more serious clash. (rtr)

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump on Sunday of scapegoating the parents of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq, after the Republican nominee took issue with remarks the soldier’s father made at the Democratic National Convention.

Trump, in an ABC interview that aired on Sunday, questioned why Ghazala Khan, mother of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, stood quietly by her husband, Khizr Khan, as he took the stage at last week’s Democratic convention in Philadelphia.

Trump suggested the mother might not have been “allowed” to speak.

Speaking at a church service, Clinton said Trump had been insulting to a family who had sacrificed so much. She also used the episode to contrast her own religious faith with that of Trump, who has spoken of religion on the campaign trail infrequently.

“I don’t begrudge anyone of any other faith or of no faith at all, but I do tremble before those who would scapegoat other Americans, who would insult people because of their religion, their ethnicity, their disability,” Clinton said in remarks at the Imani Temple Ministries, an African-American church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

“It’s just not how I was raised, that’s not how I was taught in my church,” said Clinton, who grew up as a Methodist. “Tim Kaine and I are people of faith,” she said, referring to her vice presidential running mate, who is a Catholic.

Top Republican lawmakers House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also condemned Trump’s remarks in separate statements, although they did not mention their presidential candidate by name.

“Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice. Captain Khan was one such brave example,” Ryan said.

“His sacrifice - and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan - should always be honored. Period.” he said.

CHICAGO - Even though many doctors see need for improvement, surgical robots are poised for big gains in operating rooms around the world.

Within five years, one in three U.S. surgeries - more than double current levels - is expected to be performed with robotic systems, with surgeons sitting at computer consoles guiding mechanical arms.

Companies developing new robots also plan to expand their use in India, China and other emerging markets.

Robotic surgery has been long dominated by pioneer Intuitive Surgical Inc, which has more than 3,600 of its da Vinci machines in hospitals worldwide and said last week the number of procedures that used them jumped by 16 percent in the second quarter compared to a year earlier.

The anticipated future growth - and perceived weaknesses of the current generation of robots - is attracting deep-pocketed rivals, including Medtronic Inc and a startup backed by Johnson & Johnson and Google. Developers of the next wave aim to make the robots less expensive, more nimble and capable of performing more types of procedures, company executives and surgeons told Reuters.

Although surgical robots run an average of $1.5 million and entail ongoing maintenance expenses, insurers pay no more for surgeries

that utilize the systems than for other types of minimally-invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy.

Still, most top U.S. hospitals for cancer treatment, urology, gynecology and gastroenterology have made the investment. The robots are featured prominently in hospital marketing campaigns aimed at attracting patients, and new doctors are routinely trained in their use.

Surgical robots are used in hernia repair, bariatric surgery, hysterectomies and the vast majority of prostate removals in the United States, according to Intuitive Surgical data.

Doctors say they reduce fatigue and give them greater precision.

But robot-assisted surgery can take more of the surgeon’s time than traditional procedures, reducing the number of operations doctors can perform. That’s turned off some like Dr. Helmuth Billy.

Billy was an early adopter of Intuitive’s da Vinci system 15 years ago. But equipping its arms with instruments slowed him down. He rarely uses it now.

“I like to do five operations a day,” Billy said. “If I have to constantly dock and undock da Vinci, it becomes cumbersome.” (rtr)

Meter-wide dinosaur print, one of largest ever, found in Bolivia

SUCRE - A footprint measuring over a meter wide that was made by a meat-eating predator some 80 million years ago has been discovered in Bolivia, one of the largest of its kind ever found.

The print, which measures 1.2 meters (1.3 yards) across, probably belonged to the abelisaurus, a biped dinosaur that once roamed South America, said Argentine paleontologist Sebastian Apesteguia, who is studying the find.

kilometers (40 miles) outside the city of Sucre in central Bolivia by a tourist guide earlier this month. The soft clay area near Sucre is well known for dinosaur tracks, and skeletal remains of the abelisaurus have also previously been found in the region.

“This print is bigger than any other we have found to date in the area,” Apesteguia said. “It is a record in size for carnivorous dinosaurs from the end of the Cretaceous period in South America.”(rtr)

Sengap makes FTF visitors double up with laughter

DENPASAR - The last day of Food Truck Festival (FTF) held by the Bali Post Media Group (KMB) in the north parking lot of Lumintang Park on Sunday (Jul. 31) presented some entertainments and contests. After commenced with mass aerobic gym by Lala Studio in the morning, it was then followed with entertainment by Balinese comedian ‘Golden Sengap’ and kid coloring contest by BaliTV. In the afternoon, it was resumed with modern dance competition by Denpost and mass yoga exercise.

Sengap with humorous jokes was able to make the FTF visitors double up with laughter due to his hilarity. Although appearing in front of children getting involved in coloring contest, the public performing jogging in the area of Lumintang Park also vivaciously witnessed the hilarity of Sengap.

Amid his jokes, Sengap was quite prideful of the FTF activities. In addition to presenting culinary treasures in the center of Denpasar, various entertainments and competitions are also held to jazz up. The FTF is an event that can be enjoyed by all

circles ranging from children to adults. He hoped the FTF event can be held annually, not only by the media, but also by the government.

At the same time, Sengap expressed his gratitude to the KMB that has given space to Balinese artists to make their performance in Denpasar to entertain Balinese people. DENPASAR - In accordance with the plan, Edy Hartaka serving as the legal counsel of the death row of the couple Heru Hendriyanto and Putu Anita Sukra Dewi finally submitted their judicial review to the Denpasar District Court. They were transferred from Karangasem Prison to the Denpasar District Court, Friday (Jul. 29).

Heru hoped his judicial review could be granted because he promised to be a good person. “I hope the best because I want to learn how to be a good person,” said Heru.

Pursuant to the procedures, the couple sentenced to death was accompanied by their legal counsel Edy Hartaka and entered the court clerk room to file the judicial review. The file was received by Deputy of Denpasar District Court criminal registrar, I Made Sukarta. Not long after the submission of the judicial review, Heru and Anita were hurriedly taken back to Karangasem Prison with the escort of police, prison officers and the officers of the Karangasem Prosecutor’s Office.

When asked about the content of the judicial review, Edy Hartaka explained that the submission is not necessarily due to the presence of new evidence. “However, we assess here there is an oversight of the judges in deciding the case,” said Edy. With the judicial review, he hoped there is a change in the subsequent decision.

“Although without payment, I will continuously fight as much as possible to help my clients. This has become the responsibility of a lawyer,” continued Edy while saying that it is meant to free his clients from death penalty.

In the facts of the trial, said Edy, both convicted persons had indeed been proved to have murdered a family. However, he hoped at least the punishment can be relieved because some countries have abolished the death penalty. “It is not a crime of terrorism. What committed by the defendants is wrong, namely murder.

However, it is different from the terrorist crime,” he continued.

Edy said that Heru and Anita asked him to fight for a lighter sentence. At least, said Edy, their punishment could be extenuated into a life sentence. “They leave a message in order to strive to get leniency. They admitted to have repented and hoped it can become a life sentence. Most importantly, they can guide their children currently being entrusted at orphanages,” he said.

Heru Hendriyanto and Putu Anita Sukra Dewi were sentenced to death for murdering a family at Kampial Residence, Badung on February 16, 2014. In addition to this couple, the other convicts such as Abdul Kodir and Syafaat were also sentenced to death. They murdered the family of Made Purnabawa, Ni Luh Ayu Sri Mahayoni (wife) and their daughter Ni Wayan Risna Ayu Dewi. (kmb37)

Many Calonarang performances even stage the storyline like the Dukuh Suladri, Sunda Upasunda and others. By and large, the storyline of the Dukuh Suladri or Sunda Upasunda is presented in the prembon operetta. However, the characters in the storyline of Dukuh Suladri and Sunda Upasunda show many differences from that of Calonarang.

“In the later development amid the community, as long as there is rerancaban of Pandung-Rangda in the storyline it has been referred to as Calonarang, whereas the performance of the Calonarang has its own story,” he explained. School bus for underprivileged children SINGARAJA —

The Buleleng Education Agency increased the attention to underprivileged children remaining to attend school in North Bali. One of the facilities initiated is through the provision of school bus. The government would like to prevent dropout rates by providing services for children originating from underprivileged families.

According to the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, the basic learning needs of every child is required to encourage the advancement of education. Constraints related to the area and distance to school is highlighted by the government. Thus, the provision of school bus is the closest solution other than the economic factors.

“We are trying to get closer by classifying children in the countryside.

First of all, it is regarding the children that really desire to attend school, children with physical disabilities, economic constraint and distance of the school. We are still considering giving an offer to 15 children of TingaTinga village, Gerokgak, facing distance constraint to their school. Our solution is by providing school bus,” he told Bali Post, recently.

He added that technically the school bus will collect the students at particular points at Tinga-Tinga village and subsequently they are delivered to the intended junior high school. “They can come together at a specified point. After that, the school bus will drive up to a certain point of the intended junior high school,” he added.

The other schools in the Gerokgak subdistrict are still being studied by the Buleleng Education Agency. The use of school bus is considered more efficient. In the meantime, the village having one or two underprivileged children going to school will be re-considered with the use of motorcycle taxi. Other rural areas like Les village and Julah village will be reviewed by the Education Agency.

“We still find out the regulation on the motorcycle taxi. In the future, the Education Agency would like to invite the individual or corporate social responsibility (CSR). Hopefully, children in rural areas can be helped so as to return to school,” he said. (kmb34)

‘Jason Bourne’ Scores With $60 Million Debut, ‘Bad Moms’ Hits Big

The crowds didn’t exactly flock to see this sub-Bourne, and the film grossed about $150 million less than “The Bourne Ultimatum” globally.

As a sign of Damon’s appeal, audience surveys reveal that the actor’s presence above-the-title was the second most frequently cited reason that people turned up for “Jason Bourne.”

“It’s no secret that people were anticipating a reunion of [Damon and Greengrass],” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief, adding “Putting the team back together made smart business sense.”

“Jason Bourne” marks the series’ second highest opening, behind “The Bourne Ultimatum’s” $69.3 million debut. When adjusted for inflation, however, it trails all but “The Bourne Legacy’s” opening weekends. Universal spent $120 million to make the latest installment and released it in 4,026 theaters.

“It proves that this is a franchise that’s still viable and that it can continue if they want to keep making them,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “’Jason Bourne’ is the perfect title for this film, because that’s who everyone wanted to see return.” (rtr)

Indonesian police uncover child exploitation racket in Bali

JAKARTA - The Indonesian National Police have exposed a child exploitation racket at a spa in Bali, Head of Sub III Directorate General of the Crime Agency of the Criminal Investigation Police, Commissioner Umar Surya Fana stated.

“As many as 12 girls, aged between 13 and 15 years, were employed as therapists at the spa,” Fana revealed here on Monday.

The commissioner remarked that the police were investigating the case involving the perpetrators, who were exploiting the girls and were responsible for the establishment of the company.

The case unfolded when the

police received an initial tip-off on the alleged trafficking of people in one of the spas on Bali Islands.

The police then conducted a search operation and found two 14-year-old girls at the spa.

“During the operation, we found 12 girls working as therapists at the spa. The girls are from Lampung, Central Java, East Java, and Kalimantan,” he remarked.

The perpetrators will face multiple charges of violating the Child Protection Law, with a minimum sentence of five years and the Human Trafficking Law, with a minimum prison term of three years.

“We do not want the judges to sentence the perpetrators to three years in prison,” he affirmed.

He pointed out that the victims were deceived by their recruiters, who lured them with salaries of up to Rp20 million per month and a bonus amounting to Rp100 thousand for each therapy. “The victims are free to return to their homes whenever

they want,” he remarked.

Fana noted that the children, in reality, earned only Rp6 million per month and received a bonus of Rp10 thousand for each therapy.

“They were forced to work 24 hours a day. They were not allowed to leave the shelter,” he emphasized.

The children were taken from their respective regions and were trained in Jakarta, to be placed in Bali. Fana said the police have identified three suspects: a recruiter, owner of the temporary shelter and the exploiter.

However, the police have yet to find evidence of a syndicate as the

suspects work independently.

“The victims are being rehabilitated at Balis Social Services Department. The victims will act as witnesses in this case.
