Obama turns 50 as US debates debt Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON â President Barack Obama may have to miss his own 50th birthday party as the milestone event appears likely to be overshadowed by a nasty tussle with Congress over money.
âPotterâ finale conjures up $1 billion worldwide PAGE 12
The birthday Thursday falls two days after the deadline for the president and lawmakers to agree on borrowing more money to keep paying the countryâs bills or else send the U.S. spiraling into a potentially calamitous, firstever default on its financial obligations. âWhat I really want right now is to, to get a debtceiling deal for my birthday,â Obama told National Public Radio recently. He got an early birthday present on Sunday, when leaders of both parties in both houses of Congress hammered out a deal to avoid default. The monthslong debate threatened to force him to skip his own celebration, a pair of birthday fundraisers planned in his Chicago hometown on Wednesday, including an event featuring musicians and Chicago natives Herbie Hancock and Jennifer Hudson. âI feel real good about 5-0,â he said. âIâve gotten a little grayer since I took this job, but otherwise, I feel pretty good.â Obama added that his wife, Michelle, has told him that she still thinks âIâm cute.â âAnd I guess thatâs, thatâs all that matters, isnât?â he said. Obama was born in 1961 near the end of the baby boom years of 1946-1964. Continued on page 6

short message on Sunday (Jul 31). Puspa said the characteristic of Bukit area covering the Pecatu, Ungasan, Kutuh, Jimbaran, and Bualu Village was definitely an arid region with rocky land structure and wavy contour. Its agriculture was like wild betel growing on rocks, while it was declared as dry land farming and limitation area. This legislator from Legian presupposed that Bukit area should be regulated to a number of areas such as chastity, residential, tourist accommodation, tour-
ism supporting infrastructure, green open space, water absorbency and public spaces. Another area was for vertical development with the height of building above 15 meters. Puspa quibbled that such vertical construction was supported by the basic strength of Bukit area that had strong rocky land structure. According to Puspa, with the height of 100 meters above sea level, the predicate as agricultural land area was not suitable for Bukit because there were hardly any agricultural commodities that
could grow productively, except for some kinds of local plants such as jujube, custard apple, quickstick, rukam, hyacinth bean, certain citrus, alang-alang grass and the like. âHowever, if snapshot in terms of beauty, the Bukit area has breathtaking sea view, land view and magical region. As a matter of fact, Bukit is very beautiful. With such potential, itâs very odd condition if Bukit is stated as dry land farming and preserved area,â he said. Continued on page 6
