“I feel real good about 5-0,” he said. “I’ve gotten a little grayer since I took this job, but otherwise, I feel pretty good.”

Obama added that his wife, Michelle, has told him that she still thinks “I’m cute.”

“And I guess that’s, that’s all that matters, isn’t?” he said.

Obama was born in 1961 near the end of the baby boom years of 1946-1964.

could grow productively, except for some kinds of local plants such as jujube, custard apple, quickstick, rukam, hyacinth bean, certain citrus, alang-alang grass and the like.

“However, if snapshot in terms of beauty, the Bukit area has breathtaking sea view, land view and magical region. As a matter of fact, Bukit is very beautiful. With such potential, it’s very odd condition if Bukit is stated as dry land farming and preserved area,” he said.

Hotel employees trained on tsunami handling Antara

DENPASAR – The employees of the hotels joined in Bali Hotel Association (BHA) is given the knowledge to anticipate tsunami because Bali as an island is prone to the disaster. “In case of tsunami, the employees will know what to do and how to save the guests,” said the Executive Director of BHA, Djinaldi Gosana.

He added that the tsunami training program has been started since two years ago. “This is the effort to increase the competitiveness of hotels in Bali with others throughout the world,” Djinaldi said.

He explained that the employees who already join the training will receive the “tsunami ready” certificate.

The trainers are the people who have

the skills in tsunami handling. “We have the tsunami detectors but we also count on the skills of the employees in case of emergency,” Djinaldi stated.

The work mechanism is when the alarm sounded, the technology in BHA will send massage to the General Managers of the hotels in BHA then the GM will pass on the information to the employees.

Djinaldi said,” if the employees already well trained then they will now what to do in the emergency situation.” The method developed in Bali has become the guidelines for the similar training abroad.

Djinaldi explained that currently BHA has 150 staffs that have “tsunami ready” certificate spread in 105 hotels throughout Bali.

Slaughter at Kafe La Love Investigators Found Six Accusers Denpasar (Bali Post) –

Bloody case at Kafe La Love, Taman Pancing Street, South Denpasar have caused I Ketut Madia (42) from Banjar Pengambengan Kangin, Kerobokan, North Kuta, Badung, died from four stab wounds.

Luckily South Denpasar Police led by First Inspector Sudiarta moved quickly and found six accused also still intensively investigated. Not only that, there were

also eleven witnesses who are café girls, victim’s colleagues, and café security, as explained by Head of the Police APC Leo Martin Pasaribu last Sunday (31/7).

The six accused were initialled BTL from Letda Reta (murder mastermind), PJL from Banjar Saka, JBR from Gunung Lumut Street, MRS from Gunung Rinjani Street, BLS from Sandat Street and PNY from Pemogan. It was known that it started with a clash between

victim and crime committers when they were drinking at the café.

There were misunderstanding with jealousy and so when victim was dancing on the hall, the six accused attacked him, hitting victim again and again. When victim has gone weak, the murderer then stabbed victim four times with a piece of a broken bottle. Evidences collected by police included Swiss knife and blood stains on murderer’s shirt. Reaching 10 billion,Investment for water recreation at Bukit Jati area Gianyar (Bali Post)—

Development innovation plan of Bukit Jati tourist area at Samplangan Village, Gianyar, into a water recreation area requires a considerable investment. To develop this tourist area in the east of Gianyar is required an investment as much as IDR 10 billion. Such amount includes the entire arrangement of recreation area until the parking lot and traders’ area.

This matter was revealed by the Head of Gianyar Government Tourism Office, Ari Brahmanta, when asked for his confirmation regarding to the continuation of the development plan of Bukit Jati area on Sunday (Jul 31).

To make the dreams of investor come true in developing the tourism in the east of Gianyar, it was required at least 2 hectares of land. On the other hand, the lands existing around the tourist object of Bukit Jati swimming pool belonged to private property. The land owned by Gianyar Government was only 0.9 hectares. Meanwhile, the remaining land needed cooperation through contract agreement with the land owners.

Similar business would also be undertaken by investors in the same field in Bantul. At least, the land of local

residents would be contracted for 20 to 30 years. Based on the development plan, the investor targeted the water recreation project could have been accomplished in early 2012.

“Now, we still find difficulties in the matter of land procurement,” he explained.

The recreational object remaining under planning stages, according to the Head of Gianyar Government Tourism Office, provided a sense of optimism that would have a positive impact on the development of Gianyar City area. The presence of such recreational object would also revive the urban tourism atmosphere, especially the tourism of Gianyar.

Economic value due to the existence of the water recreation at Bukit Jati remained possible and had clear future prospect, he explained. (kmb16)

Commission IV urges the development of SLB school Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Commission IV of Bali House still hoped that the disabled school (SLB C) in Lumintang, Denpasar could be relocated as soon as possible considering the condition of educational facilities was very alarming. Unfortunately, it was not easy to relocate the school due to hampered by land problems. A member of Commission IV of Bali House, Made Suamba, revealed the matter on Sunday (Jul 31).

According to Suamba, relocation of SLB C Lumintang was very urgent because the existence of the schools at the moment was not very feasible.

Meanwhile, relocation to the land at the former Balitek had been rejected so that Bali Government had to find a new alternative land. In the meantime, it was rumored there was land asset of Bali Government on Jalan Athena Denpasar but it was still doubtful.

“We worry about another conflict.

However, local government must pro-

vide the same educational facilities including facilities for SLB students having physical and mental disabilities,” he said.

He hoped that each region did not insist on their regional autonomy.

Anyhow and wherever it would be built, it would only utilize the assets belonging to Bali Government.

“We do hope no more rejection from people,” he said hopefully.

Meanwhile, Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika during a hearing with the Bali House not long ago assessed the existing the disabled school at Jimbaran was considered not feasible. Even, condition of the school was judged as a patchwork. “SLB Jimbaran is not feasible and the quality is too low,” he said.

Farmers at Ambengan Village, Sukasada Subdistrict, are engulfed by anxiety because their irrigation system hit by catastrophic flood over a year ago has not been repaired yet. In this dry season, their rice fields are under threat of drought and the damaged irrigation system is unable to drain water maximally.

A legislator of Buleleng House from Sukasada, Made Teja, said on Sunday (Jul 31) that his party continuously received complaints from farmers in the region of Ambengan. Last natural disasters had devastated their irrigation and until now it had not been repaired by government. To that end, in a joint commission meeting of the Buleleng House on Tuesday (Aug 2), his party would question the matter. “We will question why the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) could not overcome the problem,” he said.

Other than Ambengan Village, irrigation at Titab Village, Busungbiu Subdistrict, which also hit by flash floods, had not received any improvement. Like at Ambengan Village, farmers at Titab Village undertook the improvement self-sufficiently by

means of simple materials. In this dry season, the farmers were anxious. If the irrigation was not immediately repaired, their crops could almost be ascertained to face failure.

Meanwhile, the Head of Buleleng Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Ketut Astasemadi, when asked for his confirmation seemed too pessimistic. According to him, BPBD and other agencies were possibly unable to repair the irrigation in 2011. It happened because the proposed post-disaster rehabilitation fund for irrigation infrastructure had not been approved until the seventh month of 2011. He had proposed it after the post-disaster data were verified. Proposals of irrigation infrastructure submitted to central government consisted of over IDR 24 billion, road infrastructure over IDR 5 billion, and hamlet road infrastructure over IDR 427 million.

“For rehabilitation requiring a large amount of fund will be proposed to central government. If not realized this year, of course we will re-propose it through the main budget 2012,” he said.

According to Astasemadi, the seriously damaged infrastructure that had not been repaired was

such as at Jembong Hamlet, Ambengan Village, Sukasada Subdistrict. Previously, landslides and flash floods in the region severely destroyed the irrigation facilities and several homes of local residents. So far, the damage to irrigation was frequently complained by farmers because it had not been repaired.

As a result, it disturbed the land cultivation and irrigation of rice field that had been planted with rice. “We are waiting for the assistance of central government to repair the damaged irrigation at Jembong,” he said.

Additionally, the aftermath of flash floods at Titab and Sepang, Busungbiu Subdistrict had not been fully addressed until now. Some road damages at these locations had not been repaired and should wait for the proposals of Buleleng Regency. Other than road, a few schools whose land slid had not been repaired until the middle of this year. Meanwhile, the infrastructure repaired at Titab Village was only the construction of bridge that had been broken by flash floods in January 2011. “We have just worked on the installation of gabion on the Titab river bank, while the other damages are under process,” he said. Syrians mark bleak Ramadan after 80 killed in Hama Reuters

AMMAN - Syrians began the Muslim Ramadan fast in somber mood on Monday after troops stormed Hama, scene of a 1982 massacre, in one of the bloodiest days of a five-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Rights activists said 80 civilians were killed in Sunday’s tank-backed assault on the central Syrian city where Assad’s father crushed an armed Muslim Brotherhood revolt 29 years ago by razing neighborhoods and killing many thousands of people.

Tanks shelled a northeastern district of Hama on Monday, killing at least four civilians, two residents said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined an international outcry over the violence.

“Chancellor Merkel condemns in the strongest of terms the Syrian government’s action against its own civilian population,” government spokesman Christoph Steegmans said. “(She) explicitly urges President Assad to halt the violence against his own people immediately,” he added. Security forces, dominated by Assad’s minority Alawite sect, had besieged the Sunni Muslim city of 700,000 for nearly a month before Sunday’s crackdown on the eve of Ramadan, a holy month when Muslims

Norwegians call for tougher laws after mass killing Reuters

OSLO - Norwegians believe penalties for serious crimes in their country should be tightened in the wake of a shooting and bomb attack that killed 77 people in July, an opinion poll showed Monday.

In a survey of 1,283 people conducted six days after the July 22 attack, 65.5 percent said the penalties were “too low” and only 23.8 percent believed they were suitable, newspaper Verdens Gang reported.

Anders Behring Breivik, the 32-year old anti-Islamic immigration zealot who has confessed to the bombing in Oslo and shooting spree on a nearby island, has been charged by police with terrorism, which carries a sentence of up to 21 years.

He also faces the risk of successive fiveyear protective custody sentences, and

some have also called for the use of provisions on crimes against humanity that could give an initial sentence of up to 30 years.

The broader aim of Breivik’s attacks was to save Europe from “cultural Marxism” and a “Muslim invasion,” according to a manifesto published just hours before the killings.

The majority of the victims were teenagers at a Labor Party youth summer camp.

Justice Minister Knut Storberget told VG he was “not surprised” by the calls for stricter laws. “We must listen and have a debate, while not draw hasty conclusions... it’s important that policy isn’t shaped in a state of panic.”

Hanne Marthe Narud, a political scientist at the University of Oslo, said Norway’s parliament is likely to stand against immediate public calls for harsher sentencing and more surveillance.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali.

There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

China blames Pakistan-trained militants for attack Associated Press Writer

URUMQI, China — China on Monday blamed Muslim extremists trained in Pakistan for killing six civilians in an attack in its troubled far western ethnic region where police later fatally shot five suspects.

Sunday’s attack raised the death toll to 18 from weekend violence in the Silk Road city of Kashgar. It is in Xinijang region, which has been tense since nearly 200 people were killed in fighting between Uighurs and Han Chinese in 2009 in Urumqi, the regional capital.

An overseas ethnic activist group said it feared the violence could prompt a new crackdown on minority Uighurs blamed for the previous violence.

Kashgar ’s city government said in a statement that an initial investigation showed members of the group behind Sunday’s attack had trained in making explosives and firearms in neighboring Pakistan in camps belonging to the

East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a banned militant organization advocating independence for Xinjiang.

The statement on the city government’s website did not offer any proof. China says the group is allied with al-Qaida.

There was no immediate comment from Pakistan. It is unlikely the allegation will drive a wedge in relations between the countries, which are close political allies.

On Sunday, the “group of armed terrorists” stormed into a restaurant in the Kashgar city center, killing the owner and a waiter and setting the restaurant on fire, the city government said.

The attackers then ran out of the restaurant and stabbed civil-

ians indiscriminately, leaving another four people dead and 12 injured, it said. Police opened fire and shot dead four suspects at the scene, while another suspect died later in a hospital, it said.

Xinjiang has been beset by ethnic conflict and a sometimes-violent separatist movement by Uighurs, a largely Muslim ethnic group that sees Xinjiang as its homeland. Many Uighurs say they have been marginalized as more majority Han Chinese move into the region.

The local government issued arrest warrants Monday for two local ethnic Uighurs who allegedly fled the scene and offered a 100,000 yuan ($16,000) reward for information leading to their capture.

BANGKOK — Thailand is preparing to usher in a new government after the Crown Prince officially opens Parliament. The ceremony led by Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn late Monday afternoon follows the July 3 election victory of a party loyal to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin was deposed by a 2006 military coup that was followed

Four dead in separatist unrest in Indonesia: police Agence France-Presse

JAYAPURA - Suspected separatist rebels killed four people including an army officer in Indonesia’s restive Papua province on Monday, the first such attack in almost four months, police said.

The unidentified attackers blocked a road near the provincial capital Jayapura, opened fire on passing vehicles and then attacked the shocked passengers with machetes, police said.

An army officer and three others were killed, while seven were injured, Papua provincial police spokesman Wachyono told reporters.

“According to intelligence information, the Morning Star flag was found thrust into the ground by the roadside,” he added, referring to the outlawed flag of Papuan independence.

Jayapura Police Chief Imam Setiawan said authorities suspected the pre-dawn attack was the work of the rebel Free Papua Movement (OPM), which has been fighting for independence for decades.

But Papuan Customary Council chairman Forkorus Yaboisembut, a community leader, said he believed the police or military were responsible.

“This is the work of some other group that seeks to discredit the OPM. I suspect the police or military could be behind this,” he told AFP. The attack came a day after election-related mayhem left 17 people dead in Puncak district, hundreds of kilometres (miles) southwest of Jayapura. Police said the two incidents were not related.

arrows, mobs of people affiliated to rival candidates for the job of district chief clashed in the remote town of Illaga, local police chief Alex Korwa said.

“We’ve deployed dozens of police and military to secure the area.

The situation is tense but under control,” he said, adding that investigations were ongoing.

The recently created district, which is only accessible by plane, is scheduled to hold its first local elections on November 9.

The ambush near Jayapura was the first of its kind since April, when two people were killed and two were injured in separate incidents involving vehicles belonging to US mining giant Freeport McMoRan. An Australian employee of

Freeport and a local security guard were shot dead in July 2009 on a road near the company’s operations in Mimika district.

The Freeport mine sits on some of the world’s richest gold reserves and is the largest single taxpayer to the Indonesian government. It has also paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to military and police officers in Papua.

US diplomatic cables released by anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks last year said the Indonesian military allegedly ran a “virtually autonomous governmental entity within the province”, with links to illegal logging.

Pro-independence militants have waged a long-running insurgency against Indonesian rule in Papua.

The rebels claim the process by which Indonesia annexed Papua in 1969 was illegitimate, and accuse Jakarta of exploitation and oppression.

Marzuki sorry his idea on KPK not used for discussion Antara

JAKARTA - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Marzuki Alie has expressed disappointment that his idea about anti-graft body KPK had not been used for discussion and that he had even been criticized for it.

“I raised the idea about the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) with a view to making it perform better and more effectively,” Marzuki told newsmen at the parliament building here on Monday.

He made the statement to clarify his statement on Friday which he said had not been quoted fully and thus led to misinterpretation.

Marzuki who is also one of the ruling Democrat Party leaders said he had actually encouraged the selection committee for the 20112016 KPK leaders to really select competent and credible figures.

“If they do not find really credible candidates they should not force themselves to do it and had better find other figures,” he said. “(And) if no credible person can really be found KPK had better be dissolved,” he said.

That was the sentence that had been quoted separately from others to impress that he had proposed the dissolution of the KPK. “While my target of raising the idea is to discuss with other elements how to make KPK become better in the future,” he said.

He said he raised the idea after former Democrat Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin, now wanted as a corruption suspect, and accused some KPK commissioners of also being involved in corruption.

KPK deputy for enforcement Ade Raharja later admitted he once met with Nazaruddin and had also mentioned some other KPK commissioners and staff being implicated in it.

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration cooperating with the Central Bank (BI) are to provide financial training to migrant workers.

The commitment is realized

in a Memorandum of Understanding signed here on Monday by Minister Muhaimin Iskandar and Central Bank‘s Governor Darmin Nasution.

“Financial training is needed to improve migrant workers` ability in managing their finances using the right

banking products,” Muhaimin said.

The minister added that good education about finance would allow migrant workers to use their wages wisely. “Migrant workers and their families must also understand the way to manage savings at banks and apply for credits,” said the minister.

Meanwhile, Governor of Central Bank Darmin Nasution said finance and banking training to migrant workers was beneficial not only to the themselves but their family as well, and to the country‘s foreign exchange reserves.

Denpasar – The importers in Europe buy various handicrafts and other non oil and gas products from Bali worth $74 million during January through May 2011 period. The Head of Export Division in Bali Trade and Industrial Department, Putu Bagiada, said that there are 5 countries that were on the top list of the importers.

Those countries were France, England, Germany, Italy, and Spain. There was also 20 other countries that imported the nonoil and gas products from Bali.

The countries in European region contributed 34% from the total revenue gained by Bali which was $234.5 million during those periods. Bagiada said that the total revenue from European region was $74 million while $57 million was coming from the top five countries.

Costumer from France was the highest buyer from January through May 2011 which was

$16 million followed by Italy with $12 million and Spain also with $12 million. Next on the list was England and Germany.

Bagiada explained that tourism plays important part in developing Bali’s export because from the tourists who come to the island, come of them will order handicrafts to be sold in their own country.

Foreign tourists from Europe to Bali during January through June 2011 period were 285,672 people or 22% from the total foreign tourists which was 1.2 million people.

The endek clothes produced are divided into two types, namely plain cloth and cloth with motif. One of the handicraftsmen is Wayan Suartika, the owner of ‘Ardini’ endek clothes handicraft at Jabon, Sampalan Tengah, Dawan Subdistrict.

However, amidst the increasing demand, labor difficulties haunt the craftsmen. They have difficulty to obtain some labors that are willing to weave endek clothes in order they can meet consumer demand. As a result, artisans are unable to meet all requests, whereas until now the Klungkung Regency actually still has thousands of unemployment, both educated and uneducated ones.

Meanwhile, the Head of Klungkung Social, Manpower and Transmigration Services, Nyoman Rahayu, said that unemployment rate in Klungkung Regency reached 4005 people from about 134,380 job seekers with age of 15 years or older.

Klungkung Regency was unable to reduce the number of unemployment and to create job opportunities other than opening vacancies of civil ser-

vant aspirants each year. Rahayu also admitted that her party could not engender skilled unemployment because until now Klungkung Regency did not have a vocational training center (BLK).

This condition is certainly in contrary to the difficulty undergone by the endek weaving handicraftsmen.

Wayan Suartika also experienced similar condition. The demand for his endek weaving works (Ardini Endek Handicraft) was admitted to increase.

It was not only from locally Bali (except for Gianyar) but also from outside Bali such as Lombok up to overseas like Italy and Japan.

Formerly, to accomplish the orders, Suartika employed more than 200 workers. However, last year his workers only remained some 100 people. Related to decrease in the number of workers, the man familiarly addressed as Songkrong by most of his relations said that younger generation of Bali today, especially the younger generation of the serombotan (assorted salads served with hot spices) land preferred to choose other jobs such as working in supermarket or a career in offices, public and private sector. In

reality, income of an endek weaver was not less than a career in the office or working in supermarket. “The weavers working with us get a minimum income of IDR 800,000 per month. Of course, such amount of salary cannot certainly be earned if working in supermarket,” he said.

Suartika had pioneered the endek weaving handicrafts since 1982.

Initially, his business was initiated by one cagcag or non-mechanical loom (ATBM). Now, the numbers continued to increase even reached 200 units. The price of cagcag equipment reached up to IDR 2.5 million per unit. With such a amount of equipment he owned, Suartika could produce endek clothes up to 500 meters with various motifs each day.

Other than endek clothes, Klungkung Regency also has unique weaving works, one of the products is cepuk cloth in Nusa Penida. Unfortunately, the number of weaver in Nusa Penida has decreased. On that account, it requires serious attention of government to re-encourage them, so distinctive characteristic of Klungkung can be well maintained in the future. (bal)

Feeling Superiority Results in Destruction When penjors paraphernalia are erected throughout the island, they epitomize that Galungan festivity has come. Every single devotee is in blooming heart welcoming it with joy. This six monthly celebration in Balinese calendar encourages people to make earnest preparation whole day and night. It’s time to glorify God and ancestors.

Based on the mythology, Galungan delineates the triumph of dharma (truth) against adharma (untruth). According to Tatwa Mayadanawa transliterated by Made Gambar said that Bedaulu kingdom in Bali was once ruled by Mayadanawa. He was very powerful and proud of his power and feels to have more sovereign power than that of gods.

This arrogance until forbids all subjects to worship God together with the celebration to glorify all God’s manifestations. The non-existence of freedom to worship and other religious activities caused many subjects greatly suffered where diseases spread and harvests failed. Seeing this condition, Lord Mahadeva in heaven feels disappointed. Having organized an assembly session with other gods, it is decided to attack Mayadanawa.

Under the leadership of Lord Indra, the target can be timely destroyed.

In short, the troops of the gods won the battle. This does not only stand

for the triumph of the gods, but also of the whole mankind on earth.

Afterwards, Galungan then can be re-celebrated after the triumph of Indra. Many subjects felt to regain their enlightenment as they were able to practice their religious life. This festivity lasts for ten days and ends in the day called Kuningan. Aside from paying homage at village temple, it is also intended to appreciate the ancestors at family shrine. Similarly, devotees thank for the prosperity bestowed and maintain the relationship with their ancestors. Though they have left for the beyond, hopefully they could illuminate their descendants.

Another version about Galungan is mentioned by the manuscript Jaya Kasunu. It is said that the king Jaya Kasunu (AD 1204), meditated (held dewa sraya) to invoke guidance. His problem was that not one of his predecessors could rule longer. Through his solemn meditation he was inspired that he should re-organize religious activities, such as Galungan.

No matter what the version is, the essence of these mythologies implies that a devotee or creation should maintain their persistent contact to his Creator. The âtman dwelling within the human self should maintain his contact to Brahman, the Creator. By doing so, humans can continuously obtain the

illumination to walk in the path of dharma.

As manifestation of gratitude, devotees express it through worship at temples, garden, rice field and so forth. Everything that has given prosperity is also offered an oblation, including the means of transportation. If you happen to take an excursion on that day you of course will rub up against many cars affixed with young coconut paraphernalia.

Hopefully, the festivity does not come to an end at the vibrant fiesta marked with grandiose oblation, assorted delicious food or luxurious paraphernalia. All the times it should help the spiritual development. Anything achieved in this life either tangible or intangible entities, should not make us arrogant. Sometimes, when having abundance of wealth or higher educational background, a human feels superior or more powerful than others. Even, it is not employed as a milestone to improve his devotion to God. It’s here where the achievement drags human to sluggish condition or gorge of destruction. Like Mayadanawa, he forgot that there is a vast sky above him.

His power has led him to his dissolution. If we do not want to become the next Mayadanawa, consistent devotion must be established. (BTN/punia)

Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked.

Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated.

Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve.

Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. (Minced Seafood Satay) Overview: This probably the most delicious satay you will ever encounter. The delicate flavors of the shrimp and fish are greatly improved if you can find spears of fresh lemongrass to use as skewers, and if you can cook them over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal.

Nonetheless, even with wooden skewers and a standard charcoal grill, you will have people coming back more.

Ingredients: 600 gr skinned boneless snapper fillet 1 cup freshly grated coconut or 1½ cups moistened desiccated coconut ½ cup seafood spice paste 5 fragrant lime leaves, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, finely crushed 1 tsp salt 3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped 2 tbsp palm sugar Lemon grass or satay skewers Preparation: 1. Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or with a chopper.

2. Add all other ingredients & mix well.

3. Mould a heaped tablespoon full of this mixture around a wooden skewer or over trimmed stalks of lemon grass and grill over charcoal until golden brown.

BUSINESS Congress moving quickly on debt and spending deal Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Congress is moving quickly on an agreement to avert a potentially devastating default on U.S. obligations, with legislation that mixes a record increase in the government’s borrowing cap with the promise of more than $2 trillion in spending cuts.

After a tense weekend of bargaining, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders announced the agreement Sunday night, providing an instant boost to Asian financial markets and a huge dose of relief to an administration and Congress frazzled by months of partisan warfare and the chance that a default could send the still-fragile economy into recession.

The Senate seems likely to vote first on the measure while House GOP leaders work to assemble support for it. Democratic votes are certain to be needed to pass the measure in the Republicandominated House, just as Republicans will be needed to clear the measure through the Democratic Senate. Liberal Democrats were already carping that Obama had given away too much to GOP leaders.

“Now, is this the deal I would have preferred? No,” Obama said.

“But this compromise does make a serious down payment on the deficit reduction we need, and gives each party a strong incentive to get a balanced plan done before the end of the year.”

The still-unreleased legislation would slice more than $2 trillion from federal spending over a decade and permit the nation’s $14.3 trillion borrowing cap to rise by up to $2.4 trillion, enough to keep the government afloat through the 2012 elections — a key objective for Obama, whose poll numbers have sagged as the summertime crisis dragged on.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, telephoned Obama at mid-evening to say the agreement had been struck, then immediately began pitching the deal to his fractious rank and file.

“It isn’t the greatest deal in the world, but it shows how much we’ve changed the terms of the debate in this town,” he said on a conference call, according to GOP officials. He added the agreement was “all spending cuts. The White House bid to raise taxes has been

shut down.”

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was publicly noncommittal. “I look forward to reviewing the legislation with my caucus to see what level of support we can provide,” Pelosi said in a written statement. But Democratic officials said she was unlikely to do anything to try to scuttle the package.

Passage seemed likely if not wholly assured. Support from Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., should guarantee Senate approval, but the House could prove more difficult because of defections from left and right alike.

“This deal trades people’s livelihoods for the votes of a few unappeasable right-wing radicals, and I will not support it,” said Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.

Tea party favorite and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., countered that the deal “spends too much and doesn’t cut enough. ... Someone has to say no.

I will.”

The government presently borrows more than 40 cents of every dollar it spends, and without an infusion of borrowing authority, the government would face an unprecedented default on U.S. loans and obligations — like $23 billion worth of Social Security pension payments to retirees due Aug. 3.

The increased borrowing authority includes $400 billion that would take effect immediately and $500 billion that Obama could order unless specifically denied by Congress. That $900 billion increase in the debt cap would be matched by savings produced over the coming decade by capping spending on day-to-day agency budgets passed by Congress each year.

A special bipartisan committee would be established to find another $1.5 trillion in further spending cuts, probably taken from benefit programs like farm subsidies, Medicare and the Medicaid health

care program for the poor and disabled. Republicans dismissed the idea that the panel would approve tax increases.

Any agreement by the panel would be voted on by both House and Senate — and if the panel deadlocked, automatic spending cuts would slash across much of the federal budget. Social Security, Medicaid and food stamps would be exempt from the automatic cuts, but payments to doctors, nursing homes and other Medicare providers could be trimmed, as could subsidies to insurance companies that offer an alternative to governmentrun Medicare.

The pact was sealed during a weekend of talks in which GOP leaders Boehner and McConnell dealt directly with the White House, especially Vice President Joe Biden. The final battle was fought over Pentagon spending cuts, with Democrats emerging with a face-saving victory for $350 billion in defense spending curbs.

But Republicans set the parameters of the debate, with Boehner successfully winning spending cuts equaling the amount of the debt increase — though the cuts phase in overtime and future Congresses will have ample temptation to find ways around stringent spending caps called for in the pact.

Obama said such appropriated accounts would be left with the lowest levels of spending as a percentage of the overall economy in more than a half-century.

The measure capped a long saga: first, meetings in a Biden-led group that fell apart over revenues; then, efforts by Obama and Boehner to forge a so-called grand bargain, cutting the deficit by $4 trillion or more over a decade, including new revenues agreed to by Boehner.

In the end, the deal was a splitthe-differences compromise, with plenty for both sides to dislike.

House GOP defense hawks came out on the losing end. So too did Democratic liberals seeking tax increases.

China central bank says inflation fight a policy priority Reuters

BEIJING - China pledged to keep to a “prudent” monetary policy for the rest of the year to combat inflation, which is stubbornly fixed near a three-year high.

In the latest sign that Beijing is taking a gentle easing in China’s economy well in stride, the central bank reiterated that fighting inflation remains its policy priority.

“Domestic inflation expectations remain on the high side,” the People’s Bank of China said in comments published on its website.

“The foundation work for stabilizing prices is not solid, and there is a chance of prices rebounding once policy is relaxed.”

The hawkish remarks, released after a regular meeting of the heads of the central bank’s branch offices across China, affirmed market expectations for Beijing to raise interest rates once more this year to quell inflation.

The comments offered few clues, however, on when the central bank would make its next move.

“Stabilizing prices will remain a policy priority,” the central bank said. “We will continue to implement prudent monetary policy and keep the needed intensity in policies.”

“We will use interest rates, foreign exchange rates, open market operations, reserve requirements and a mix of policy tools to maintain a reasonable rhythm and scale in total financing.”

Since October, Beijing has raised interest rates five times and banks’ required reserve ratio nine times to prevent rising prices from fuelling social unrest.

But even with the steady tightening, China’s consumer price index hit a three-year peak of 6.4 percent in June as a spike in pork prices kept inflation elevated.

But with the Chinese economy easing slightly, many analysts think Beijing may delay its next policy move in a nod to softer growth, even though it is still firmly in tightening mode.

Such talk was reignited on Monday after a pair of manufacturing surveys showed Chinese factories struggling with their weakest activities in 28 months in July as tight policy at home and weak demand abroad hurt production.

The central bank did not address such speculation, and kept the thrust of its statement on the need to keep China’s economy and financial system growing in a stable manner.

“We will further improve the yuan exchange rate mechanism and let market forces, as well as a basket of currencies, play a bigger role in deciding the yuan’s value,” the central bank said.

Despite years of promising to free up its currency regime, Beijing retains tight control over the yuan by deciding the yuan’s daily value.

Also, many analysts think the yuan remains in a crawling peg to the dollar even though Beijing says the yuan’s value is derived from a basket of currencies.

‘Potter’ finale conjures up $1 billion worldwide Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — Harry Potter has joined the billion-dollar club.

Distributor Warner Bros. said Sunday that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It’s soon expected to pass “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which is this year’s top grossing movie at $1.03 billion.

The last of the eight films about the young wizard is the first in the franchise to reach the billion dollar mark. The previous best global haul was $974.8 million for the original film, 2001’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

With $21.9 million domestically this weekend, “Deathly Hallows: Part 2” climbed to a domestic total of $318.5 million. That tops the franchise’s previous best of $317.6

million for “Sorcerer’s Stone.”

But factoring in today’s higher admission prices, “Deathly Hallows: Part 2” has not caught up to “Sorcerer’s Stone” in terms of actual tickets sold.

The 2009 film “Avatar” holds the record for the biggest worldwide box office haul, grossing $2.8 billion. It’s followed by another James Cameron film, “Titanic,” which brought in $1.8 billion.

Besides ending nearly 3,000 lives, destroying planes and reducing buildings to tons of rubble and ash, the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks destroyed tens of thousands of records, irreplaceable historical documents and art.

In some cases, the inventories were destroyed along with the records. And the loss of human life at the time overshadowed the search for lost paper. A decade later, agencies and archivists say they’re still not completely sure what they lost or found, leaving them without much of a guide to piece together missing history.

“You can’t get the picture back, because critical pieces are missing,” said Kathleen D. Roe, operations director at the New York State Archives and co-chairwoman of the World Trade Center Documentation Project. “And so you can’t know what the whole picture looks like.”

A cheap, highly portable blood test kit has proven as accurate as expensive hospital-based analyses in detecting HIV, syphilis and other infectious diseases, according to a new study. Researchers tested prototypes of the creditcard-sized lab-on-a-chip with hundreds of patients in Rwanda, reporting nearly 100 percent accuracy.

The so-called “mChip”, they said, could help knock down three barriers to effective delivery of health care into the world’s poorest regions: difficult access, high costs and long delays for results.

“The idea is to make a large class of diagnostic tests accessible to patients in any setting in the world, rather than forcing them to go to a clinic to draw blood and then wait days for their results,” said Samuel Sia, a professor at Columbia University and lead developer.

The findings were published in Nature Medicine. With a projected production cost of a dollar per unit, the mChip would be far cheaper to administer than current lab-based tests.

Because it can scan for multiple proteins, each corresponding to a disease, at the same time with a single blood sample, it is probably even cheaper — and more accurate — than strips which work like store-bought pregnancy tests. “Current rapid HIV tests require subjective interpretation of band intensity by the user that can result in false positives,” that is, healthy individuals being misdiagnosed, the study noted.

The mChip, by contrast, allows for measurement using a hundred-dollar handheld instrument no more complicated to use than a cell phone, according to the researchers.

Finally, the device produces results in minutes rather than days or weeks, a time saving that can make a big difference in treatment outcome.

England coach Fabio Capello has vowed to provide a memorable finale to his troubled reign by winning Euro 2012. Capello’s underwhelming four years in England will come to a conclusion at the end of the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine next year and the Italian is determined to leave the perfect farewell gift.

Although England are still engaged in a tense battle with Montenegro for automatic qualification for the finals, Capello is convinced England are capable of winning a major international tournament for the first time since the 1966 World Cup. “I think my last year will be very good, I hope so. I try to make everything better,” Capello said.

“I study, I prepare, I focus. I hope that at the end of my career we will win a trophy. “I hope so because when you are a winner, you want to win something, not to lose.” Many top clubs would like to hire Capello after he quits England, but he confirmed he

plans to retire after Euro 2012 and will instead work as a commentator and analyst for Italian television.

“It is my job and the job is my life and I love it. But, yes, I will definitely retire after the Euros,” he said. Capello was speaking in Brazil after the draw for the 2014 World Cup qualifying groups, an experience that could have triggered bitter memories after England’s disappointing performance at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

The 65-year-old won’t be around for England’s next crack at the World Cup, but he believes his successor will inherit a bright

young team.

His speed, crossing ability and versatility have been a big asset for us,” Ferguson told United’s website. “He has a quiet, unassuming way of going about his business, which is underlined by great strength of character - as his recovery from such a bad injury last season proves.”

Serena claims first title since 2010 Wimbledon Reuters

STANFORD, California - Comeback queen Serena Williams won her first tournament in more than a year when she overpowered third seed Marion Bartoli of France 7-5 6-1 in the Stanford Classic final Sunday.

American Williams came from 2-4 down in the opening set and then dominated the rest of the match with booming serves and hard groundstrokes to claim her first title since Wimbledon last year.

The 13-times grand slam champion, who returned to the tour in June after taking almost a year off due to injury and illness, triumphed for the first time on home soil since her victory at the 2008 U.S. Open. After firing down a service winner to wrap up the match in one hour and 22 minutes, Williams skipped around the court in joyful celebration.

“I haven’t won a tournament in forever that wasn’t a grand slam so it’s cool,” said Williams, whose last nonmajor title was the 2009 WTA Championships in Doha.

“I put a lot of work into this week. I want to take this whole (hardcourt) swing serious. It’s a good time for me.”

GAME DETERIORATED

Bartoli used her vicious groundstrokes to lead 4-2 in the first set but then suffered an injury to her right hand and her game deteriorated as she could not grip her racket properly for her serve and forehand.

She served for the set at 5-4 but was broken when she hit a forehand long. Williams then held and again broke the Frenchwoman to win the set when her opponent erred on a backhand. Bartoli had beaten a rusty Williams in the fourth round of Wimbledon this year

“I knew before the match that it would be different from Wimbledon,” said Bartoli, who suffered a bone bruise on her hand. “I managed to play well until my hand was disturbed, but that doesn’t take anything away from Serena who played really well.”

Williams won five consecutive games to take command of the second set before ending the match with a rasping forehand crosscourt winner followed by a 113 mph service winner. “I never lose hope in my serve,” said Williams, who unleashed 11 aces in the match. “Sometimes it doesn’t show up, but I keep hitting it.

“I have an opportunity to be healthy and be here that I’m so grateful,” added the American, who is next scheduled to play in the WTA event in Toronto starting on August 8.

Former world number one Williams, who was ranked a lowly 169th coming into this week, is projected to break into the top 80 when the new rankings are issued Monday.

AIBA unveils professional programme Reuters

ASTANA - Amateur boxing organisation AIBA is to set up a professional programme to enhance its standing within the sport, AIBA President Wu Ching-Kuo said on Monday.

Encouraged by the first season’s success of the franchisebased World Series of Boxing (WSB), the executive committee had approved AIBA’s own professional boxing programme, he said.

“I am determined to launch professional boxing under the umbrella of AIBA so that we will be the true and respected leader of our sport, and not any other organisation,” Wu said in a state-

ment.

The AIBA will finalise the business plans this year and register the programme, called AIBA Professional Boxing (APB), and sign top boxers next year before rolling out the competitions in 2013.

“We will allow these APB boxers to compete in the Olympic Games with limited terms and conditions and we plan to make this dream come true from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” Wu said.

Once APB was lunched, AIBA plans to abolish headguards in all elite men competitions. “However, we decided to maintain headguards for Women, Youth and Junior categories,” the statement added.
