NEW YORK - Drake has smashed streaming records with his new album “Scorpion,” with Apple Music and Spotify both reporting unprecedented listenership in its first day.

Actress Vanessa Paradis marries French director: report PARIS - Actress and singer Vanessa Paradis has married French director Samuel Benchetrit, according to a report by magazine Le Parisien.

Wearing a cream-coloured ruffle dress with flowers in her blonde hair, Paradis married Benchetrit at the town hall in Saint-Simeon, east of Paris, the report said.

Photographs on the website of Le Parisien showed a smiling Paradis leaving the town hall armin-arm with Benchetrit, wearing a navy suit, as wedding guests threw confetti over the couple.

The small ceremony was attend-

ed by a few dozen guests, including Paradis’ 19-year-old daughter LilyRose Depp, born during her 14-year relationship with American actor Johnny Depp which ended in 2012, the report said.

Paradis and Benchetrit, both 45, made their relationship official in August 2017.

The French singer and actress began her career as a model before becoming a huge film and music star in France.

Apple Music said on Instagram that the Canadian hip-hop superstar’s fifth studio album was streamed 170 million times in the 24 hours since its release Friday.

The worldwide figure is the highest ever reported by any streaming service for an album over one day and comes even though Apple Music significantly trails industry leader Spotify in total users.

Drake has a lengthy relationship with Apple, which heavily promoted “Scorpion.”

The hotly anticipated album inexplicably appeared two hours late on Spotify.

But “Scorpion” also set a record on Spotify, which heavily featured the album after it went alive.

The site Spotifycharts, which tracks listening data, said that Spotify users streamed the album’s 25 songs more than 132 million times over the first day.

The figures smash the previous record for one-day streaming -- rapper Post Malone’s album “Beerbongs and Bentleys,” which was streamed just under 79 million times on Spotify on the first day of its release in April.

Streaming records are being frequently broken as growing numbers of listeners embrace Spotify, Apple Music and competitors such as Deezer and Tidal, which allow unlimited on-demand music.

Just days ago, the Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin surpassed Drake as the artist with the most regular monthly listeners on Spotify -- but Drake quickly retook the crown with “Scorpion.”

Drake has found massive success releasing sprawling albums and mixtapes of danceable tracks online without consideration to physical formats.

It is safe to travel to Bali after Mount Agung eruption?

BALI’S Mount Agung volcano erupted yesterday, delaying hundreds of flights to and from the island. But is it safe to travel to Bali now? The active volcano spewed up a massive ash cloud, as well as volcanic vapours.

More than 300 flights to and from the popular tourist destination in Indonesia were cancelled.

Volcanic ash poses a hazard to aviation as it can cause engine failure, damage flight controls and restrict pilot visibility.

The island’s main Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport has re-opened now, but warnings remain in place. National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said today: “Volcanic ash from Mount Agung

this morning is weaker in intensity, up to 300 metres. Flares can be seen from its crater (on Saturday) morning.”

He added that all airports in Bali, Lombok island, Jember and Banyuwangi in East Java are operating normally.

There is a danger zone within a four-kilometre radius around Mount Agung’s crater, which is still being observed.

The safety warning level is at level three, one below the highest

advisory. Official foreign travel advice from UK authorities states: “The ash clouds from the volcano can cause the airport to close temporarily at short notice, and it could remain closed for days or weeks.

“If you travel to Bali while the volcano is active you should make plans to deal with possible disruption to your trip.”

Reports have come in of stranded travellers unable to claim travel insurance due to the volcano being classed as a “known event.”The

airlines, which are back up and running, have warned the situation remains tenuous.

Virgin Airlines said in a statement this morning: “As this situation remains unpredictable flights may be cancelled at short notice if conditions deteriorate.”

The Bali Government Tourism Office issued a statement saying visitors with an urgent need to continue their travel could take a bus and ferry from Bali to Surabaya — the nearest international airport. Indonesia, Bali’s island archipelago, is one of the world’s most active volcanic regions.

SINGARAJA —Indonesian Labor Service, Placement and Protection Agency (BP3TKI) Bali handed over the body of Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI), Kadek Pariani, 33, from Alasari hamlet, Pacung, Tejakula, on Saturday morning (Jun. 30). The deceased’s body was previously flown from SoekarnoHatta Airport Jakarta to Bali on Friday night (Jun. 29) around 12:05 Jakarta time. Repatriation of the deceased’s body was facilitated by the BP3TKI Bali and Consulate of Republic of Indonesia in Istanbul,

Turkey. BP3TKI Bali also handed over compensation to the parents of the late, namely Wayan Karidana and Made Seri Gati.

From Denpasar, her body was escorted by ambulance and arrived at the Alasari hamlet around 02:45 local time. Parents and families who have been waiting for the arrival of her body immediately dropped off the coffin from the ambulance. The coffin was then placed in the living room of his parents’ house.

The deceased’s body was of-

ficially handed over by the Protection Section Head of the BP3TKI, Atep. The handover was witnessed

by Division Head of Work Placement Expansion, Manpower and Transmigration Agency, Wayan Sulia, and Pacung village apparatus.

After delivering, Atep conveyed his condolence to the family of the deceased. He also left a message to parents and relatives if later on wishing to work overseas should comply with the procedures having been specified. He suggested to avoid independent placement, but used

a company or official placement agency, so that the experience of the deceased will not happen again.

Parents of the late, Wayan Karidana, expressed his gratitude for the help extended by Indonesian consulate in Istanbul, the BP3TKI Bali, Manpower and Transmigration Agency, and village government officials. Without the help of the government apparatus, it was unthinkable to repatriate the second daughter of the nine siblings.

Meanwhile, the funeral ceremony, said Karidana, will be organized

FROM spotting wild elephants in Udawalawe National Park to experiencing one of the world’s most beautiful train rides, Sri Lanka is the new must-go destination. Sri Lanka, the “pearl of the Indian Ocean”, is going through a renaissance right now. Tourists have been flocking to the island since one of its luxury beach resorts was featured in the reality program Made in Chelsea earlier this year.

Sri Lanka is easy to access with direct flights from several hubs to the capital city of Columbo, and for around £75 a day you can stay in a cheap hotel or an Airbnb property, hire a driver and eat out for lunch and dinner.

Though small, not much larger than Wales, Sri Lanka has ancient cities, Buddhist ruins, hillside tea plantations, wildlife sanctuaries and glorious beaches.

Climb Sigiriya The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya near the town of Dambulla is a soaring example of ancient urban enterprise. The remains of 5th century palace built by King Kaspaya sit atop the 200m high rock formation. Visitors can climb to the summit via a series of dizzying steps leading to a gateway in the form of a lion, complete with huge, stone paws that have been carved into the rock. The palace of King Kaspaya, which was later used as a Buddhist monastery, is decorated in colourful frescoes depicting celestial nymphs (or perhaps King Kaspaya’s concubines). The surrounding landscape, with its water gardens and lush, green forests, really adds to the drama and has secured Sigiriya as one of Sri Lanka’s World Heritage Sites.

Discover the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa The ancient city of Polunnaruwa, now a World Heritage Site, was built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD. It was once a thriving metropolis containing grand buildings, beautiful parks and even a 25 km² lake, but by the 13th century AD had faded into insignificance and was eventually abandoned. The city ruins are now a popular tourist attraction and provide some fantastic photography opportunities. This includes the 13m high King’s Royal Palace, which once housed 50 rooms over seven floors. Today most of the structure is an empty shell of crumbling walls, but it is still a very impressive site. There are also numerous Buddha statues dotted around Polunnaruwa, most of which are in varying states of decay. However the four Buddhas at Gal Vihara, cut from a single slab of granite, are in near perfect condition.

Participate in a religious ceremony at Sri Dalada Maligawa Also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Maligawa is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy in central Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy and houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, which legend tells us was retrieved by his disciple, Khema, just before he was cremated.

Take the train from Kandy to Ella The striking blue and red train that makes the daily journey from Kandy to Ella is a terrific way to experience the varying and dramatic landscapes of Sri Lanka. The express train takes around six hours (there are plenty of stops on the way) and on route you will pass cascading waterfalls, misty mountains, dense forests and local people tending to the lush green pastures of the tea plantations.

While you can reserve a seat in advance, you will get more out of the journey if you buy a cheap ticket on the day, costing only 240 rupees (less than £2) and stand in one of the carriage doorways. The views are worth sacrificing your seat, and you’ll also experience a welcome breeze as you snap away at the incredible scenery.

DENPASAR — She never imagined before if she could perform Balinese dance and bring Balinese culture to foreign countries. Moreover, she did it at a very young age.

“Om Swastyastu, punapi gatra (Om Swastyastu, how are you),” welcomed the foreigners to the arrival of I.A. Kade Rani Dwi Putri, 27, and the entourage from Bali. Rani was happy to be greeted by foreigners with refined Balinese language.

The foreigners are the members of the Sekar Jaya gamelan troupe in the country. The troupe is made up of foreigners in San Francisco, the United States, who are quite happy

with Balinese art and culture.

Rani, as she is familiarly addressed, got invitation to dance there. She was twelve years old at the time. Collaborating with Sekar Jaya gamelan troupe, she danced Legong telling stories about Prince Karna.

She was there for more than a month. She lived in a house reserved for learning Balinese art and culture. Anyone can come to that house. In the basement of the house is a place to practice dancing and playing gamelan.

“There is also a place for us to say prayers,” she recalled.

Upon her coming home from America, a few months later,

she returned to dance in various places, including in Padang in 2009. It is a rare opportunity to perform Balinese dance in several regions including overseas. On a regular basis, the Warini Dance Studio was invited to perform.

“This performance is meant to introduce our culture,” she said.

She specifically traveled there to dance because Warini Dance Studio where she learned had a regular schedule to be called for dancing there. In 2011, she was also invited to dance to Tokyo, Japan, with Bali Tourism Office.

Again, she performed Balinese dance.

BAF XL enlivened with teenage gender gamelan contest

DENPASAR - Ambassadors from four districts in Bali participated in teenage gender (puppet gamelan) competition at Ratna Kanda Stage, Denpasar Art Center, on Saturday (Jun. 30). The competition is in the series of the 40th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) resumed with the presentation of other districts / municipality on Sunday (Jul. 1).

On the first day was the turn of ambassador from Klungkung district competing against the ambassador of Buleleng district as well as Gianyar district dealing with Tabanan district. Each team consists of four gender gamelan players and two sloka (verse) readers.

The Wayang Katih Ilang gamelan troupe from Batununggul, Nusa Penida, representing Klungkung district featured three gamelan compositions namely the Sekar Gendotan, Pamungkah, and Baa (ember—Ed). Coach of the Wayang Katih Ilang gamelan troupe, I Wayan Mulyana, said that one of the gamelan compositions namely Sekar Gendotan is petegak gender gamelan compositions frequently used in shadow puppet show in Bali.

The rhythm is very dynamic like the meaning of gendotan namely moving

quickly up and down or swaying.

Meanwhile, Ganeswara Art Studio from Pemaron village representing Buleleng district presented the Ginotan composition, Pamungkah Siwa Manik Dalang and Wayang Kusuma Wilaja. According to the art director of Ganeswara art studio of Pemaron village, I Ketut Mustika, the gamelan composition of Pamungkah Siwa Manik Dalang was first introduced at Pemaron village by (the late) Sriajeng circa 1950. “This gamelan composition is used until now as a characteristic of leather puppet performance at Siwa Manik Dalang Temple of Pemaron village,” he said.

Furthermore, the ambassadors of Tabanan district was represented by Kembang Bali art studio featuring mandatory gamelan composition entitled Sekar Ginotan or Gendot, Pamungkah, and Jengreng Kapurasan contemporary gamelan composition.

Its opponent is the ambassador of Gianyar district represented by Swara Murti from Babakan, Sukawati. One of them is the nicely enough Sekar Gendot composition. It is a gamelan composition with melodic strains full of variations of pounding and firm composition. (kmb32)

SINGARAJA - Twin Lakes Festival (TLF) IV 2018 is ensured to be held again, although the water of Lake Buyan at Pancasari village, Sukasada, overflows. Due to the overflowing water, the location usually used to make the TLF main stage is forced to be moved. The main stage is made in a parking lot facing north. Meanwhile, the exhibition booth of agriculture and the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) products are placed along the roadside on the edge of the lake.

The TLF 2018 is scheduled to be opened on Wednesday (Jul. 4) and lasts until Saturday (Jul. 7).

Preparation has been done starting on Friday (Jun. 29). Tent of the exhibition stand located on the roadside in front of the parking area has been installed. Amidst of the initial preparation, Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana (PAS) accompanied by the Head of Agricultural Agency, Nyoman Genep, already inspected the TLF location.

He said since the lake water overflow cannot be predicted, his office must move the venue of the main stage. High tide of the lake water causes the current TLF venue to be currently submerged. More-

over, the overflowing water of this lake has drowned the embankment in the lakeside. This natural condition is unavoidable. Meanwhile, this TLF event is not just a budgetconsuming venture.

Concept of the TLF is generating awareness and attention of all the people to the lake condition.

The change of nature becomes a reflection in the arrangement of the lake area in the future. Changing condition of the lake where the water rises and vice versa when the low tide can still be the concern of all components of society. “It’s a natural phenomenon and we cannot predict, so we move the TLF stage so as it can still be organized in accordance with the calendar of

event,” he said.

Regarding the normalization and arrangement of the lake by the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS), the regent stated that such an effort is being programmed by the BWS. Design of the arrangement to maintain the lake is being prepared, so the district government should just await the realization of the policy.

The arrangement by BWS includes the handling of siltation of the lake by making ponds to accommodate flooding when it rains washing away sedimentation materials into the lake area. The making of embankments is functioned to support natural tourism and control of agricultural patterns in the upstream of the lake. (kmb38)

Thai boys spend eighth night in flooded cave as weather eases

BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her CDU party will discuss plans to reduce immigration Sunday as conservative rebels also meet, in key talks likely to determine the fate of her government.

Merkel’s government has been pushed to the brink over the migration issue after allowing more than one million asylum-seekers into Germany since 2015.

The policy has provoked a backlash from Merkel’s conservative CSU coalition partner with her Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, also the CSU chief, even threatening to unilaterally turn back migrants at the border.

On Friday, the European Union’s 28 members hammered out a hardfought deal to tackle migration and avert a crisis that has threatened the very fabric of the bloc.

Afterwards, Merkel announced that she had also reached separate agreements with Spain and Greece on taking back asylum-seekers.

According to a document sent to the CSU and fellow coalition partner the Social Democratic Party, Merkel has also secured similar deals with a total of 14 countries including France and central European states that were fiercely critical of her migrant policies, such as the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.

Two of the countries mentioned -- Hungary and the Czech Republic

-- however denied Saturday that any such deal had been reached.

- Admissions centres Merkel is also proposing that migrants arriving in Germany who first registered in another EU country should be placed in special holding centres under restrictive conditions, the document says.

The agreements struck by Merkel could placate the hardline rebels in her government.

Seehofer, meanwhile, must decide whether to make good on a threat to turn away at the border migrants already registered in other European Union nations.

The move would force Merkel to fire him, likely leading to a CSU walkout costing the chancellor her majority in parliament.

Sunday’s meetings will see the CDU leadership meet in Berlin while the CSU leadership and parliamentary group will meet in Munich.

They follow EU leaders agreeing to consider setting up “disembarkation platforms” outside the EU, most likely in North Africa, in a bid to discourage migrants and refugees boarding EU-bound smuggler boats.

Member countries could also create processing centres to determine whether the new arrivals are returned home as economic migrants or admitted as refugees in willing states. (afp)

MAE SAI - Twelve Thai boys and their assistant football coach spent their eighth night trapped in a flooded cave, as a round-the-clock search was aided by better weather on Sunday.

Rescue teams attempted to reach deeper into the chambers of Tham Luang cave in the hope of locating the children, aged 11 to 16, and the coach more than a week after they ventured in and were blocked by heavy rains.

Despite the tireless effort and international assistance, there has been no contact with the group since they were reported missing, and monsoon rains have complicated the rescue by blocking passageways.

But an ease in the rough seasonal weather near Thailand’s borders with Myanmar and Laos has buoyed hopes that divers

will be able to reach deeper into the recesses of Tham Luang’s 10-kilometre-long (six-mile) passageway.

“I’m feeling happy like I’ve never felt in a long time. Many good signs,” the football team’s head coach Nopparat Khanthavong, 37, told AFP on Sunday.

“The rain has stopped and rescue teams have found potential ways to reroute the waterway,” diverting its flow so no more enters the cave, he said. “The families are feeling much better too.”

The desperate search has been beset by downpours that submerged tunnels near the entrance, but

Thai Navy SEAL divers reached a T-junction in the cave’s depths on Saturday -- just two or three kilometres from where the boys are believed to be.

Some divers have put out a call for oxygen tank donations to help replenish their stock and make the operation more fluid.

“Because the diving distance is about two to three kilometres, we need divers to plant (oxygen tanks) sporadically to provide them with air to breathe from time to time until they reach the destination,” diver Narinthorn Na Bangchang, who is assisting the effort, told AFP on Saturday. (afp)

BBTF wants to achieve synergy of all tourism entities

US workers fear steel tariffs could be nail in the coffin

The mood is tense at a nail factory in rural Missouri, where workers fear that steel tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration could cost them their jobs.

As giant spools of steel feed the manufacturing process, the men and women operating the whirring, screeching machines of the Mid-Continent Nail Corporation wonder if Trump himself will come to their rescue.

It has been a successful business, employing some 500 people in the rural community of Poplar Bluff.

“People like us, we thought: biggest nail manufacturer in the United States, our jobs should be safe. Obviously, it’s not,” said machine shop supervisor Sean Hughey.

The nail company is publicly raising the alarm, saying the tariffs on steel imports may put it out of business.

They have had to raise prices to pay for more expensive steel and cannot compete with cheaper imported nails -- completed products that face no tariffs at all.

“It’s a misguided policy,” said Chris Pratt, Mid Continent’s chief financial officer and operations chief. “I just think it’s a policy that wasn’t thought out completely. And we got to fix it.”

- Immediate effect Many of the workers here voted for Trump. And the Poplar Bluff region favored the president over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election by a margin of more than 60 percent.

They liked his promise of a resurgence in American manufacturing.

“I just want to have America on a level playing field, you know. And he seemed like he was interested in doing that,” said Hughey. Support for Trump has not wavered.

But workers want the brash Republican to provide an exemption from the tariffs, so the factory can continue to import cheap steel from Deacero, the Mexican company that owns Mid Continent.

But the company’s exemption request is one of more than 20,000 the Trump administration has received. Factory executives say they can’t wait.

Orders have plunged 70 percent and they already have shut down one of their three plants at a sprawling complex in Poplar Bluff. Sixty workers are laid off and hundreds more may soon lose their jobs.

If nothing changes within a few more months, the company might close altogether.

“We need help immediately,” said George Skarich, Mid Continent’s vice president of sales. “Because the longer this lasts, the longer it puts us in a position of losing money on a daily basis.”

- ‘I’m scared’ Poplar Bluff is a small community of approximately 17,000 with a handful of manufacturing plants, surrounded by a seemingly endless expanse of farms.

Mid Continent -- source of 50 percent of all American-made nails -- is a regional economic powerhouse.

It is also a lifeline for Diane Brogdon. Her job as a machine operator provides the sole source of income for the 54-year-old and her daughter, who is attending college.

“I’m scared about losing everything I have. I think I’m too old to start over again,” she said.

Brogdon has worked at the plant for eight years. Just a few months ago, she felt secure enough to buy a house. Now, she’s afraid she will lose it. She still supports Trump, but wants him to rethink some of his actions.

“He needs to stop and think about the people that might lose their jobs because of some of his policies,” she says.

Other plant workers echo Brogdon’s sentiment. They are hopeful Trump would help, if only he heard their pleas.

They have engaged in a media blitz, including a full-page ad in the local newspaper with

an open letter asking for the president’s help.

“More than any other president in our time, you have shown compassion for US manufacturing workers,” the letter says.

- ‘Buy American’ Certainly, the tariffs have been good for some. In March, US Steel hired 500 workers as it expanded capacity at one of its plants just a two-and-a-half hour drive north of Poplar Bluff and is bringing on 300 more this summer.

Sam Anders can attest to the business boom. The 28-year-old travels from town to town for a company that refurbishes steel plant furnaces. He said they can’t keep up with demand.

“We’re so far behind on work right now we can’t even hardly keep guys out on the road long enough,” Anders said.

He is in Poplar Bluff to make repairs at an engine-making plant just across the street from the nail factory. Anders is unsympathetic to the company’s pleas and questions why it relies so heavily on cheap foreign steel.

“We only buy American-made stuff, American-made steel, in our shops, where we build all of our equipment,” he said.

- Job losses ‘already’ The problem with the tariffs is that even if tens of thousands of steel manufacturing jobs are created, hundreds of thousands of jobs may be lost due to subsequent tit-fortat duties.

Economist Laura Baughman of the research group Trade Partnership Worldwide researched US tariffs imposed in 2002 and predicts job losses this time around could be as high as 400,000.

“Right now, you’re seeing it already,” Baughman said. “There’s the steel-consuming jobs, which is everything from nails and automobiles, to construction... as well as jobs that get lost in restaurants, for example, because people who lose jobs don’t go out to restaurants any more.”

Senator Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, has taken hold of the issue during a tough midterm reelection campaign and says her office has accumulated a list of dozens of worried companies.

“We want to keep this issue out front and center so that we can try to save as many of these jobs as we can,” she said, after touring the nail factory with executives. (afp)

Spain to take in NGO rescue ship carrying 59 migrants MADRID - A Spanish NGO said Saturday it had rescued 59 migrants as they tried to cross the Mediterranean from Libya and would dock in Spain after Italy and Malta refused access.

The news comes a day after three babies were found dead and 100 more went missing in a shipwreck off Libya that Proactiva Open Arms, whose charity rescue boat was in the area, said could potentially have been avoided.

It also follows a controversial deal reached by EU member states to stem the arrival of migrants. The accord struck Friday includes the setting up of secure centres for migrants in the bloc, “disembarkation platforms” outside the bloc and sharing out refugees among member states.

The Spanish NGO said on Twitter that the 59 migrants were now on board their Open Arms ship “heading for a secure port”.

“Despite the hurdles, we continue to protect the right to life of invisible people. Their stories on what they experienced (in) Libya are terrifying.”

Reacting to the rescue, Italy’s hardline Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said on Facebook: “The nearest port is Malta, the organisation and flag are Spanish: they can forget about coming to an Italian port.”

Malta’s interior minister retorted on Twitter that the migrants had been rescued between Libya and Italy’s Lampedusa.

“Stop spreading incorrect information by pointing the finger at Malta without any reason,” Michael Farrugia said.

In the end, the NGO said they had been given authorisation to dock in Barcelona, adding they would arrive on Wednesday.

Italy’s new populist government and Malta earlier this month refused to let dock French NGO rescue ship Aquarius carrying 630 migrants. The move triggered an international outcry before Spain stepped in to help.

Malta then let another charity rescue boat, Lifeline, dock with 230 migrants aboard.

Proactiva Open Arms also accused coastguards in the area of hindering their work as countries such as Italy take a hardline stance against the arrival of migrants.

The NGO said Friday’s shipwreck could potentially have been avoided as the official call for help from Italy’s rescue control centre only came one hour after Open Arms overheard an EU plane warning Libyan coastguards that a migrant boat was in trouble. (afp)

Thousands march against US immigration policy

WASHINGTON - Thousands of demonstrators marched in cities across the United States on Saturday against President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policy and to demand the immediate reunification of families separated at the border with Mexico.

Directly across from the White House, demonstrators filled Lafayette Square park in an atmosphere of both indignation and sadness, before marching toward the Capitol.

Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Portland also saw crowds of protesters turn out, with celebrities including Alicia Keys and LinManuel Miranda present in Washington and John Legend in Los Angeles.

“We don’t believe in borders, we don’t believe in walls,” Sebastian Medina-Tayac, of the Piscataway Indian Nation, declared in English and Spanish at the start of the rally dubbed “Families Belong Together.”

Loudspeakers broadcast the cries of a child split from relatives, as a Brazilian mother told of being separated from her own son.

“I missed nine months of his life and it should never have happened,” said the woman, who only gave her name as Jocelyn. Her case dates from before the practice of separating families intensified in May. “Shame! Shame!” the crowd responded in temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius).

The president could not hear the protesters’ shouts, as he spent the day in Bedminster, New Jersey at the Trump National Golf Club.

There, too, protesters gathered on his motorcade route, many of them with signs about immigration policy.

“Asylum seekers are not criminals,” said one.

Trump took to Twitter to defend his stance on immigration.

“When people come into our Country illegally, we must IMMEDIATELY escort them back out without going through years of legal maneuvering,” he wrote.

“Our laws are the dumbest anywhere in the world.

Starting in early May, in an attempt to staunch the flow of tens of thousands of migrants to the southern US border every month, Trump ordered the arrest of adults crossing the boundary illegally, including those seeking asylum.

Many trying to cross the US-Mexico frontier are destitute, fleeing gang violence and other turmoil in Central America.

As a result of Trump’s crackdown, distraught children were separated from their families and, according to widely broadcast pictures, held in chainlink enclosures, a practice that sparked domestic and global outrage.

Trump later signed an order ending the separation of families, but immigration lawyers say the process of reuniting children and their parents will be long and chaotic.

About 2,000 children remained split from their parents, according to official figures released last weekend. (afp)

Each year people from the Tengger tribe gather from the surrounding highlands to cast fruit, vegetables, flowers, and even livestock such as goats and chickens into Mount Bromo’s smoking crater as part of the Yadnya Kasada festival.

Other villagers -- not members of the Tengger tribe -- try to catch the offerings before they disappear into the billowing smoke using nets and sarong. This is not technically part of the ritual but reflects local frugal urges not to waste the offerings.

The month-long Yadnya Kasada festival harkens back to the 15th century legends of Majapahit kingdom princess Roro Anteng and husband Joko Seger.

Unable to bear children after years of marriage, the couple begged the gods for help.

Their prayers were answered and they were promised 25 children, as long as they agreed to sacrifice their youngest child by throwing him into Mount Bromo.

Legend has it this son willingly jumped into the volcano to guarantee the prosperity of the Tengger people.

The sacrifice tradition continues to this day -though the Tengger sacrifice their harvest and farm animals instead of humans.

Dancers in elaborate traditional costumes and tourists were up before dawn to take part in this year’s ceremony. Crowds have swelled at Mount Bromo in recent years as the local government promotes the festival as a tourist event.

Capsized Indonesian ferry spotted at bottom of lake: officials

An Indonesian ferry that capsized and sank with scores of people aboard has been found by search teams combing the depths of one of the world’s deepest lakes, authorities said Friday.

The vessel was believed to be operating illegally with no manifest and an insufficient number of life jackets when it went down on Lake Toba, a picturesque tourist destination in Sumatra.

Authorities have struggled to pinpoint the exact number

onboard when it went down nearly two weeks ago, in one of Indonesia’s deadliest maritime accidents.

Remotely operated vehicles found the boat Thursday night some 420 metres (1,475 feet) below the surface of the lake, the national search and rescue agency said.

Grainy video and photo footage showed several bodies and motorcycles, which the boat had been carrying, on the lake bed.

“We saw bodies, passengers’

belongings such as helmets, shoes, ferry seats, rope. We’ve seen them clearly. I’ve seen them with my own eyes through the monitor,” Nugroho Budi Wiryanto, a spokesman for the agency, told reporters.

The vessel, he added, was at a depth of 420 metres (1,380 feet), with some of the bodies further down at 455 metres.

Just three passengers have been confirmed dead in the accident, with 21 survivors. Official estimates listed 164 others -- including

children -- as missing.

They are presumed dead, with many bodies thought to be trapped inside the sunken ferry. Two trawlers are being used to try to haul the boat to the surface, but the vast depths are posing problems for rescuers.

“We will continue to think of a way to pull it out and evacuate the bodies,” Wiryanto said. “I pray we can find a solution because it’s very deep.”

Lake Toba, which fills the crater

of a supervolcano that exploded in a massive eruption tens of thousands of years ago, is one of the world’s deepest lakes, plunging to some 500 metres in places.

The traditional wooden boat could have been carrying five times the number of passengers it was built to hold, along with dozens of motorcycles, officials have said.

LOS ANGELES - Kevin Durant, who has been named backto-back MVP of the NBA finals, plans to re-sign with the champion Golden State Warriors, ESPN reported on Saturday.

Durant’s deal is expected to last two years and pay him around $30 million per season, the American broadcaster said.

Earlier this month Durant helped the Warriors defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers to win their second straight title.

Durant averaged 26.4 points per game to go along with 6.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in the regular season.

“Move over, Messi, a new global superstar is born at the World Cup,” was the headline in the Sunday Times in Britain. “In this game, the Messi was him,” French sports daily L’Equipe said above a photograph of Mbappe celebrating. “He showed his talent to the world and overshadowed Lionel Messi.”

The double strike made the boy from the Paris suburbs the first teenager since a 17-year-old Pele to score twice in a World Cup game.

The Brazilian legend tweeted: “Congratulations, @KMbappe. 2 goals in a World Cup so young puts you in great company!” “He’s got a

“And he’s not going to stop there.

The World Cup-winning Brazil teams of 1994 and 2002 had plenty of attacking talent, but owed their

success as much to defensive steel.

In 2002, only England scored against Brazil in the knockout stages, a solid back line providing the foundation for Ronaldo to get the goals that won his country a fifth World Cup. This Brazil team is constructed on similarly formidable defensive ground, with just eight goals conceded in 28 matches after the 2-0 win over Serbia on Wednesday.

Mbappe’s speed and power ruthlessly exposed Argentina’s defence in Kazan in a thrilling 4-3 victory on Saturday that re-established France among the World Cup favourites.

As one number 10 trudged off -the player wearing an Argentina shirt with Messi’s name on -- another in the blue of France took the plaudits.

“Move over, Messi, a new global superstar is born at the World Cup,” was the headline in the Sunday Times in Britain. “In this game, the Messi was him,” French sports daily L’Equipe said above a photograph of Mbappe celebrating. “He showed his talent to the world and overshadowed Lionel Messi.”

The double strike made the boy from the Paris suburbs the first teenager since a 17-year-old Pele to score twice in a World Cup game.

“I experienced a lot of great joy and happiness as a France player, and the reason I took this job was to feel the same again,” said Deschamps.

are enough streetwise players to ensure this Brazil should not suffer a collapse even close to the scale of the 7-1 against Germany four years ago.

“In defensive positions, it is not just four of us plus one holding midfielder,” said Casemiro. “Brazil’s defensive strength starts from Gabriel (Jesus), then with Neymar and Willian. All 11 players defend and all 11 attack.”

The ability of Paulinho, one of the few survivors of the 2014 squad, to power forward from deep and score goals like that against Serbia is perhaps not something one associates with a typical Barcelona and Brazil midfielder.

And behind it all, there is a strength in depth in the goalkeeping department that has not always been a characteristic of Brazil

This time around the excellent Ederson, a star in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team, cannot get in the side because of the presence of Alisson Becker.

“Guardiola has an ace in his team, but he has Alisson in his way, and at the moment he is the Pele of goalkeepers,” said Claudio Taffarel, the custodian in the 1994 World Cup-winning team and now Brazil’s goalkeeping coach, earlier this year.

It all means that, while other pretournament favourites continue to fall by the wayside, there is reason for Brazil to dream of lifting a sixth World Cup even if Neymar doesn’t hit the heights.(afp)

LOS ANGELES - Kevin Durant, who has been named backto-back MVP of the NBA finals, plans to re-sign with the champion Golden State Warriors, ESPN reported on Saturday.

Durant’s deal is expected to last two years and pay him around $30 million per season, the American broadcaster said.

Earlier this month Durant helped the Warriors defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers to win their second straight title.

Durant averaged 26.4 points per game to go along with 6.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in the regular season.

Durant has averaged at least 25 points for the past 10 seasons.

Murray has played just three matches since making his comeback last week after 11 months on the sidelines.

Spain to take in NGO rescue ship carrying 59 migrants MADRID - A Spanish NGO said Saturday it had rescued 59 migrants as they tried to cross the Mediterranean from Libya and would dock in Spain after Italy and Malta refused access.

The news comes a day after three babies were found dead and 100 more went missing in a shipwreck off Libya that Proactiva Open Arms, whose charity rescue boat was in the area, said could potentially have been avoided.

It also follows a controversial deal reached by EU member states to stem the arrival of migrants. The accord struck Friday includes the setting up of secure centres for migrants in the bloc, “disembarkation platforms” outside the bloc and sharing out refugees among member states.

The Spanish NGO said on Twitter that the 59 migrants were now on board their Open Arms ship “heading for a secure port”.

“Despite the hurdles, we continue to protect the right to life of invisible people. Their stories on what they experienced (in) Libya are terrifying.”

Reacting to the rescue, Italy’s hardline Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said on Facebook: “The nearest port is Malta, the organisation and flag are Spanish: they can forget about coming to an Italian port.”

Malta’s interior minister retorted on Twitter that the migrants had been rescued between Libya and Italy’s Lampedusa.

“Stop spreading incorrect information by pointing the finger at Malta without any reason,” Michael Farrugia said.

In the end, the NGO said they had been given authorisation to dock in Barcelona, adding they would arrive on Wednesday.

Italy’s new populist government and Malta earlier this month refused to let dock French NGO rescue ship Aquarius carrying 630 migrants. The move triggered an international outcry before Spain stepped in to help.

Malta then let another charity rescue boat, Lifeline, dock with 230 migrants aboard.

Proactiva Open Arms also accused coastguards in the area of hindering their work as countries such as Italy take a hardline stance against the arrival of migrants.

The NGO said Friday’s shipwreck could potentially have been avoided as the official call for help from Italy’s rescue control centre only came one hour after Open Arms overheard an EU plane warning Libyan coastguards that a migrant boat was in trouble. (afp)

WASHINGTON - Thousands of demonstrators marched in cities across the United States on Saturday against President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policy and to demand the immediate reunification of families separated at the border with Mexico.

Directly across from the White House, demonstrators filled Lafayette Square park in an atmosphere of both indignation and sadness, before marching toward the Capitol.

Loudspeakers broadcast the cries of a child split from relatives, as a Brazilian mother told of being separated from her own son.

“I missed nine months of his life and it should never have happened,” said the woman, who only gave her name as Jocelyn. Her case dates from before the practice of separating families intensified in May. “Shame! Shame!” the crowd responded in temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius).

The president could not hear the protesters’ shouts, as he spent the day in Bedminster, New Jersey at the Trump National Golf Club.

There, too, protesters gathered on his motorcade route, many of them with signs about immigration policy.

“Asylum seekers are not criminals,” said one.

Trump took to Twitter to defend his stance on immigration.

“When people come into our Country illegally, we must IMMEDIATELY escort them back out without going through years of legal maneuvering,” he wrote.

“Our laws are the dumbest anywhere in the world.

Starting in early May, in an attempt to staunch the flow of tens of thousands of migrants to the southern US border every month, Trump ordered the arrest of adults crossing the boundary illegally, including those seeking asylum.

Many trying to cross the US-Mexico frontier are destitute, fleeing gang violence and other turmoil in Central America.

As a result of Trump’s crackdown, distraught children were separated from their families and, according to widely broadcast pictures, held in chainlink enclosures, a practice that sparked domestic and global outrage.

Trump later signed an order ending the separation of families, but immigration lawyers say the process of reuniting children and their parents will be long and chaotic.

About 2,000 children remained split from their parents, according to official figures released last weekend. (afp)

Each year people from the Tengger tribe gather from the surrounding highlands to cast fruit, vegetables, flowers, and even livestock such as goats and chickens into Mount Bromo’s smoking crater as part of the Yadnya Kasada festival.

Other villagers -- not members of the Tengger tribe -- try to catch the offerings before they disappear into the billowing smoke using nets and sarong. This is not technically part of the ritual but reflects local frugal urges not to waste the offerings.

The month-long Yadnya Kasada festival harkens back to the 15th century legends of Majapahit kingdom princess Roro Anteng and husband Joko Seger.

Unable to bear children after years of marriage, the couple begged the gods for help.

Their prayers were answered and they were promised 25 children, as long as they agreed to sacrifice their youngest child by throwing him into Mount Bromo.

Legend has it this son willingly jumped into the volcano to guarantee the prosperity of the Tengger people.

The sacrifice tradition continues to this day -though the Tengger sacrifice their harvest and farm animals instead of humans.

Dancers in elaborate traditional costumes and tourists were up before dawn to take part in this year’s ceremony. Crowds have swelled at Mount Bromo in recent years as the local government promotes the festival as a tourist event.

Capsized Indonesian ferry spotted at bottom of lake: officials

An Indonesian ferry that capsized and sank with scores of people aboard has been found by search teams combing the depths of one of the world’s deepest lakes, authorities said Friday.

The vessel was believed to be operating illegally with no manifest and an insufficient number of life jackets when it went down on Lake Toba, a picturesque tourist destination in Sumatra.

Authorities have struggled to pinpoint the exact number

onboard when it went down nearly two weeks ago, in one of Indonesia’s deadliest maritime accidents.

Remotely operated vehicles found the boat Thursday night some 420 metres (1,475 feet) below the surface of the lake, the national search and rescue agency said.

Grainy video and photo footage showed several bodies and motorcycles, which the boat had been carrying, on the lake bed.

“We saw bodies, passengers’

belongings such as helmets, shoes, ferry seats, rope. We’ve seen them clearly. I’ve seen them with my own eyes through the monitor,” Nugroho Budi Wiryanto, a spokesman for the agency, told reporters.

The vessel, he added, was at a depth of 420 metres (1,380 feet), with some of the bodies further down at 455 metres.

Just three passengers have been confirmed dead in the accident, with 21 survivors. Official estimates listed 164 others -- including

children -- as missing.

They are presumed dead, with many bodies thought to be trapped inside the sunken ferry. Two trawlers are being used to try to haul the boat to the surface, but the vast depths are posing problems for rescuers.

“We will continue to think of a way to pull it out and evacuate the bodies,” Wiryanto said. “I pray we can find a solution because it’s very deep.”

Lake Toba, which fills the crater

of a supervolcano that exploded in a massive eruption tens of thousands of years ago, is one of the world’s deepest lakes, plunging to some 500 metres in places.

The traditional wooden boat could have been carrying five times the number of passengers it was built to hold, along with dozens of motorcycles, officials have said.

BBTF wants to achieve synergy of all tourism entities

US workers fear steel tariffs could be nail in the coffin

The mood is tense at a nail factory in rural Missouri, where workers fear that steel tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration could cost them their jobs.

As giant spools of steel feed the manufacturing process, the men and women operating the whirring, screeching machines of the Mid-Continent Nail Corporation wonder if Trump himself will come to their rescue.

It has been a successful business, employing some 500 people in the rural community of Poplar Bluff.

“People like us, we thought: biggest nail manufacturer in the United States, our jobs should be safe. Obviously, it’s not,” said machine shop supervisor Sean Hughey.

The nail company is publicly raising the alarm, saying the tariffs on steel imports may put it out of business.

They have had to raise prices to pay for more expensive steel and cannot compete with cheaper imported nails -- completed products that face no tariffs at all.

“It’s a misguided policy,” said Chris Pratt, Mid Continent’s chief financial officer and operations chief. “I just think it’s a policy that wasn’t thought out completely. And we got to fix it.”

- Immediate effect Many of the workers here voted for Trump. And the Poplar Bluff region favored the president over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election by a margin of more than 60 percent.

They liked his promise of a resurgence in American manufacturing.

“I just want to have America on a level playing field, you know. And he seemed like he was interested in doing that,” said Hughey. Support for Trump has not wavered.

But workers want the brash Republican to provide an exemption from the tariffs, so the factory can continue to import cheap steel from Deacero, the Mexican company that owns Mid Continent.

But the company’s exemption request is one of more than 20,000 the Trump administration has received. Factory executives say they can’t wait.

Orders have plunged 70 percent and they already have shut down one of their three plants at a sprawling complex in Poplar Bluff. Sixty workers are laid off and hundreds more may soon lose their jobs.

If nothing changes within a few more months, the company might close altogether.

“We need help immediately,” said George Skarich, Mid Continent’s vice president of sales. “Because the longer this lasts, the longer it puts us in a position of losing money on a daily basis.”

- ‘I’m scared’ Poplar Bluff is a small community of approximately 17,000 with a handful of manufacturing plants, surrounded by a seemingly endless expanse of farms.

Mid Continent -- source of 50 percent of all American-made nails -- is a regional economic powerhouse.

It is also a lifeline for Diane Brogdon. Her job as a machine operator provides the sole source of income for the 54-year-old and her daughter, who is attending college.

“I’m scared about losing everything I have. I think I’m too old to start over again,” she said.

Brogdon has worked at the plant for eight years. Just a few months ago, she felt secure enough to buy a house. Now, she’s afraid she will lose it. She still supports Trump, but wants him to rethink some of his actions.

“He needs to stop and think about the people that might lose their jobs because of some of his policies,” she says.

Other plant workers echo Brogdon’s sentiment. They are hopeful Trump would help, if only he heard their pleas.

They have engaged in a media blitz, including a full-page ad in the local newspaper with

an open letter asking for the president’s help.

“More than any other president in our time, you have shown compassion for US manufacturing workers,” the letter says.

- ‘Buy American’ Certainly, the tariffs have been good for some. In March, US Steel hired 500 workers as it expanded capacity at one of its plants just a two-and-a-half hour drive north of Poplar Bluff and is bringing on 300 more this summer.

Sam Anders can attest to the business boom. The 28-year-old travels from town to town for a company that refurbishes steel plant furnaces. He said they can’t keep up with demand.

“We’re so far behind on work right now we can’t even hardly keep guys out on the road long enough,” Anders said.

He is in Poplar Bluff to make repairs at an engine-making plant just across the street from the nail factory. Anders is unsympathetic to the company’s pleas and questions why it relies so heavily on cheap foreign steel.

“We only buy American-made stuff, American-made steel, in our shops, where we build all of our equipment,” he said.

- Job losses ‘already’ The problem with the tariffs is that even if tens of thousands of steel manufacturing jobs are created, hundreds of thousands of jobs may be lost due to subsequent tit-fortat duties.

Economist Laura Baughman of the research group Trade Partnership Worldwide researched US tariffs imposed in 2002 and predicts job losses this time around could be as high as 400,000.

“Right now, you’re seeing it already,” Baughman said. “There’s the steel-consuming jobs, which is everything from nails and automobiles, to construction... as well as jobs that get lost in restaurants, for example, because people who lose jobs don’t go out to restaurants any more.”

Senator Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, has taken hold of the issue during a tough midterm reelection campaign and says her office has accumulated a list of dozens of worried companies.

“We want to keep this issue out front and center so that we can try to save as many of these jobs as we can,” she said, after touring the nail factory with executives. (afp)

BAF XL enlivened with teenage gender gamelan contest

DENPASAR - Ambassadors from four districts in Bali participated in teenage gender (puppet gamelan) competition at Ratna Kanda Stage, Denpasar Art Center, on Saturday (Jun. 30). The competition is in the series of the 40th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) resumed with the presentation of other districts / municipality on Sunday (Jul. 1).

On the first day was the turn of ambassador from Klungkung district competing against the ambassador of Buleleng district as well as Gianyar district dealing with Tabanan district. Each team consists of four gender gamelan players and two sloka (verse) readers.

The Wayang Katih Ilang gamelan troupe from Batununggul, Nusa Penida, representing Klungkung district featured three gamelan compositions namely the Sekar Gendotan, Pamungkah, and Baa (ember—Ed). Coach of the Wayang Katih Ilang gamelan troupe, I Wayan Mulyana, said that one of the gamelan compositions namely Sekar Gendotan is petegak gender gamelan compositions frequently used in shadow puppet show in Bali.

The rhythm is very dynamic like the meaning of gendotan namely moving

quickly up and down or swaying.

Meanwhile, Ganeswara Art Studio from Pemaron village representing Buleleng district presented the Ginotan composition, Pamungkah Siwa Manik Dalang and Wayang Kusuma Wilaja. According to the art director of Ganeswara art studio of Pemaron village, I Ketut Mustika, the gamelan composition of Pamungkah Siwa Manik Dalang was first introduced at Pemaron village by (the late) Sriajeng circa 1950. “This gamelan composition is used until now as a characteristic of leather puppet performance at Siwa Manik Dalang Temple of Pemaron village,” he said.

Furthermore, the ambassadors of Tabanan district was represented by Kembang Bali art studio featuring mandatory gamelan composition entitled Sekar Ginotan or Gendot, Pamungkah, and Jengreng Kapurasan contemporary gamelan composition.

Its opponent is the ambassador of Gianyar district represented by Swara Murti from Babakan, Sukawati. One of them is the nicely enough Sekar Gendot composition. It is a gamelan composition with melodic strains full of variations of pounding and firm composition. (kmb32)

SINGARAJA - Twin Lakes Festival (TLF) IV 2018 is ensured to be held again, although the water of Lake Buyan at Pancasari village, Sukasada, overflows. Due to the overflowing water, the location usually used to make the TLF main stage is forced to be moved. The main stage is made in a parking lot facing north. Meanwhile, the exhibition booth of agriculture and the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) products are placed along the roadside on the edge of the lake.

The TLF 2018 is scheduled to be opened on Wednesday (Jul. 4) and lasts until Saturday (Jul. 7).

Preparation has been done starting on Friday (Jun. 29). Tent of the exhibition stand located on the roadside in front of the parking area has been installed. Amidst of the initial preparation, Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana (PAS) accompanied by the Head of Agricultural Agency, Nyoman Genep, already inspected the TLF location.

He said since the lake water overflow cannot be predicted, his office must move the venue of the main stage. High tide of the lake water causes the current TLF venue to be currently submerged. More-

over, the overflowing water of this lake has drowned the embankment in the lakeside. This natural condition is unavoidable. Meanwhile, this TLF event is not just a budgetconsuming venture.

Concept of the TLF is generating awareness and attention of all the people to the lake condition.

The change of nature becomes a reflection in the arrangement of the lake area in the future. Changing condition of the lake where the water rises and vice versa when the low tide can still be the concern of all components of society. “It’s a natural phenomenon and we cannot predict, so we move the TLF stage so as it can still be organized in accordance with the calendar of

event,” he said.

Regarding the normalization and arrangement of the lake by the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS), the regent stated that such an effort is being programmed by the BWS. Design of the arrangement to maintain the lake is being prepared, so the district government should just await the realization of the policy.

The arrangement by BWS includes the handling of siltation of the lake by making ponds to accommodate flooding when it rains washing away sedimentation materials into the lake area. The making of embankments is functioned to support natural tourism and control of agricultural patterns in the upstream of the lake. (kmb38)

Thai boys spend eighth night in flooded cave as weather eases

BERLIN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her CDU party will discuss plans to reduce immigration Sunday as conservative rebels also meet, in key talks likely to determine the fate of her government.

Merkel’s government has been pushed to the brink over the migration issue after allowing more than one million asylum-seekers into Germany since 2015.

The policy has provoked a backlash from Merkel’s conservative CSU coalition partner with her Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, also the CSU chief, even threatening to unilaterally turn back migrants at the border.

On Friday, the European Union’s 28 members hammered out a hardfought deal to tackle migration and avert a crisis that has threatened the very fabric of the bloc.

Afterwards, Merkel announced that she had also reached separate agreements with Spain and Greece on taking back asylum-seekers.

According to a document sent to the CSU and fellow coalition partner the Social Democratic Party, Merkel has also secured similar deals with a total of 14 countries including France and central European states that were fiercely critical of her migrant policies, such as the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.

-- however denied Saturday that any such deal had been reached.

- Admissions centres Merkel is also proposing that migrants arriving in Germany who first registered in another EU country should be placed in special holding centres under restrictive conditions, the document says.

Seehofer, meanwhile, must decide whether to make good on a threat to turn away at the border migrants already registered in other European Union nations.

The move would force Merkel to fire him, likely leading to a CSU walkout costing the chancellor her majority in parliament.

Sunday’s meetings will see the CDU leadership meet in Berlin while the CSU leadership and parliamentary group will meet in Munich.

They follow EU leaders agreeing to consider setting up “disembarkation platforms” outside the EU, most likely in North Africa, in a bid to discourage migrants and refugees boarding EU-bound smuggler boats.

MAE SAI - Twelve Thai boys and their assistant football coach spent their eighth night trapped in a flooded cave, as a round-the-clock search was aided by better weather on Sunday.

Rescue teams attempted to reach deeper into the chambers of Tham Luang cave in the hope of locating the children, aged 11 to 16, and the coach more than a week after they ventured in and were blocked by heavy rains.

Despite the tireless effort and international assistance, there has been no contact with the group since they were reported missing, and monsoon rains have complicated the rescue by blocking passageways.

But an ease in the rough seasonal weather near Thailand’s borders with Myanmar and Laos has buoyed hopes that divers

will be able to reach deeper into the recesses of Tham Luang’s 10-kilometre-long (six-mile) passageway.

“I’m feeling happy like I’ve never felt in a long time. Many good signs,” the football team’s head coach Nopparat Khanthavong, 37, told AFP on Sunday.

“The rain has stopped and rescue teams have found potential ways to reroute the waterway,” diverting its flow so no more enters the cave, he said. “The families are feeling much better too.”

The desperate search has been beset by downpours that submerged tunnels near the entrance, but

Thai Navy SEAL divers reached a T-junction in the cave’s depths on Saturday -- just two or three kilometres from where the boys are believed to be.

Some divers have put out a call for oxygen tank donations to help replenish their stock and make the operation more fluid.

“Because the diving distance is about two to three kilometres, we need divers to plant (oxygen tanks) sporadically to provide them with air to breathe from time to time until they reach the destination,” diver Narinthorn Na Bangchang, who is assisting the effort, told AFP on Saturday. (afp)

FROM spotting wild elephants in Udawalawe National Park to experiencing one of the world’s most beautiful train rides, Sri Lanka is the new must-go destination. Sri Lanka, the “pearl of the Indian Ocean”, is going through a renaissance right now. Tourists have been flocking to the island since one of its luxury beach resorts was featured in the reality program Made in Chelsea earlier this year.

Sri Lanka is easy to access with direct flights from several hubs to the capital city of Columbo, and for around £75 a day you can stay in a cheap hotel or an Airbnb property, hire a driver and eat out for lunch and dinner.

Though small, not much larger than Wales, Sri Lanka has ancient cities, Buddhist ruins, hillside tea plantations, wildlife sanctuaries and glorious beaches.

Climb Sigiriya The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya near the town of Dambulla is a soaring example of ancient urban enterprise. The remains of 5th century palace built by King Kaspaya sit atop the 200m high rock formation. Visitors can climb to the summit via a series of dizzying steps leading to a gateway in the form of a lion, complete with huge, stone paws that have been carved into the rock. The palace of King Kaspaya, which was later used as a Buddhist monastery, is decorated in colourful frescoes depicting celestial nymphs (or perhaps King Kaspaya’s concubines). The surrounding landscape, with its water gardens and lush, green forests, really adds to the drama and has secured Sigiriya as one of Sri Lanka’s World Heritage Sites.

Discover the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa The ancient city of Polunnaruwa, now a World Heritage Site, was built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD. It was once a thriving metropolis containing grand buildings, beautiful parks and even a 25 km² lake, but by the 13th century AD had faded into insignificance and was eventually abandoned. The city ruins are now a popular tourist attraction and provide some fantastic photography opportunities. This includes the 13m high King’s Royal Palace, which once housed 50 rooms over seven floors. Today most of the structure is an empty shell of crumbling walls, but it is still a very impressive site. There are also numerous Buddha statues dotted around Polunnaruwa, most of which are in varying states of decay. However the four Buddhas at Gal Vihara, cut from a single slab of granite, are in near perfect condition.

Participate in a religious ceremony at Sri Dalada Maligawa Also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Maligawa is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy in central Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy and houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, which legend tells us was retrieved by his disciple, Khema, just before he was cremated.

Take the train from Kandy to Ella The striking blue and red train that makes the daily journey from Kandy to Ella is a terrific way to experience the varying and dramatic landscapes of Sri Lanka. The express train takes around six hours (there are plenty of stops on the way) and on route you will pass cascading waterfalls, misty mountains, dense forests and local people tending to the lush green pastures of the tea plantations.

While you can reserve a seat in advance, you will get more out of the journey if you buy a cheap ticket on the day, costing only 240 rupees (less than £2) and stand in one of the carriage doorways. The views are worth sacrificing your seat, and you’ll also experience a welcome breeze as you snap away at the incredible scenery.

DENPASAR — She never imagined before if she could perform Balinese dance and bring Balinese culture to foreign countries. Moreover, she did it at a very young age.

“Om Swastyastu, punapi gatra (Om Swastyastu, how are you),” welcomed the foreigners to the arrival of I.A. Kade Rani Dwi Putri, 27, and the entourage from Bali. Rani was happy to be greeted by foreigners with refined Balinese language.

The foreigners are the members of the Sekar Jaya gamelan troupe in the country. The troupe is made up of foreigners in San Francisco, the United States, who are quite happy

with Balinese art and culture.

Rani, as she is familiarly addressed, got invitation to dance there. She was twelve years old at the time. Collaborating with Sekar Jaya gamelan troupe, she danced Legong telling stories about Prince Karna.

She was there for more than a month. She lived in a house reserved for learning Balinese art and culture. Anyone can come to that house. In the basement of the house is a place to practice dancing and playing gamelan.

“There is also a place for us to say prayers,” she recalled.

Upon her coming home from America, a few months later,

she returned to dance in various places, including in Padang in 2009. It is a rare opportunity to perform Balinese dance in several regions including overseas. On a regular basis, the Warini Dance Studio was invited to perform.

“This performance is meant to introduce our culture,” she said.

She specifically traveled there to dance because Warini Dance Studio where she learned had a regular schedule to be called for dancing there. In 2011, she was also invited to dance to Tokyo, Japan, with Bali Tourism Office.

Again, she performed Balinese dance.

to other’s countries makes her amazed with her own culture. She realized the world’s community is very enthusiastic and well received the art and culture of Bali. Not only being the audience, they also want to pursue the arts.

Such valuable experience will never be forgotten. Rani is very happy to dance. Moreover, the hobby is beneficial to Bali in particular. “So, I can channel my hobbies and travel at the same time.

Getting to know the outside world enable me to have new friends,” she concluded. That’s what makes her so grateful to Ni Ketut Arini for giving her a golden opportunity. (kmb42)

It is safe to travel to Bali after Mount Agung eruption?

BALI’S Mount Agung volcano erupted yesterday, delaying hundreds of flights to and from the island. But is it safe to travel to Bali now? The active volcano spewed up a massive ash cloud, as well as volcanic vapours.

More than 300 flights to and from the popular tourist destination in Indonesia were cancelled.

Volcanic ash poses a hazard to aviation as it can cause engine failure, damage flight controls and restrict pilot visibility.

The island’s main Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport has re-opened now, but warnings remain in place. National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said today: “Volcanic ash from Mount Agung

this morning is weaker in intensity, up to 300 metres. Flares can be seen from its crater (on Saturday) morning.”

He added that all airports in Bali, Lombok island, Jember and Banyuwangi in East Java are operating normally.

There is a danger zone within a four-kilometre radius around Mount Agung’s crater, which is still being observed.

The safety warning level is at level three, one below the highest

advisory. Official foreign travel advice from UK authorities states: “The ash clouds from the volcano can cause the airport to close temporarily at short notice, and it could remain closed for days or weeks.

“If you travel to Bali while the volcano is active you should make plans to deal with possible disruption to your trip.”

Reports have come in of stranded travellers unable to claim travel insurance due to the volcano being classed as a “known event.”The

airlines, which are back up and running, have warned the situation remains tenuous.

Virgin Airlines said in a statement this morning: “As this situation remains unpredictable flights may be cancelled at short notice if conditions deteriorate.”

The Bali Government Tourism Office issued a statement saying visitors with an urgent need to continue their travel could take a bus and ferry from Bali to Surabaya — the nearest international airport. Indonesia, Bali’s island archipelago, is one of the world’s most active volcanic regions.

SINGARAJA —Indonesian Labor Service, Placement and Protection Agency (BP3TKI) Bali handed over the body of Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI), Kadek Pariani, 33, from Alasari hamlet, Pacung, Tejakula, on Saturday morning (Jun. 30). The deceased’s body was previously flown from SoekarnoHatta Airport Jakarta to Bali on Friday night (Jun. 29) around 12:05 Jakarta time. Repatriation of the deceased’s body was facilitated by the BP3TKI Bali and Consulate of Republic of Indonesia in Istanbul,

Turkey. BP3TKI Bali also handed over compensation to the parents of the late, namely Wayan Karidana and Made Seri Gati.

From Denpasar, her body was escorted by ambulance and arrived at the Alasari hamlet around 02:45 local time. Parents and families who have been waiting for the arrival of her body immediately dropped off the coffin from the ambulance. The coffin was then placed in the living room of his parents’ house.

ficially handed over by the Protection Section Head of the BP3TKI, Atep. The handover was witnessed

by Division Head of Work Placement Expansion, Manpower and Transmigration Agency, Wayan Sulia, and Pacung village apparatus.

After delivering, Atep conveyed his condolence to the family of the deceased. He also left a message to parents and relatives if later on wishing to work overseas should comply with the procedures having been specified. He suggested to avoid independent placement, but used

a company or official placement agency, so that the experience of the deceased will not happen again.

Parents of the late, Wayan Karidana, expressed his gratitude for the help extended by Indonesian consulate in Istanbul, the BP3TKI Bali, Manpower and Transmigration Agency, and village government officials. Without the help of the government apparatus, it was unthinkable to repatriate the second daughter of the nine siblings.

NEW YORK - Drake has smashed streaming records with his new album “Scorpion,” with Apple Music and Spotify both reporting unprecedented listenership in its first day.

Actress Vanessa Paradis marries French director: report PARIS - Actress and singer Vanessa Paradis has married French director Samuel Benchetrit, according to a report by magazine Le Parisien.

Wearing a cream-coloured ruffle dress with flowers in her blonde hair, Paradis married Benchetrit at the town hall in Saint-Simeon, east of Paris, the report said.

Photographs on the website of Le Parisien showed a smiling Paradis leaving the town hall armin-arm with Benchetrit, wearing a navy suit, as wedding guests threw confetti over the couple.

The small ceremony was attend-

ed by a few dozen guests, including Paradis’ 19-year-old daughter LilyRose Depp, born during her 14-year relationship with American actor Johnny Depp which ended in 2012, the report said.

Apple Music said on Instagram that the Canadian hip-hop superstar’s fifth studio album was streamed 170 million times in the 24 hours since its release Friday.

The worldwide figure is the highest ever reported by any streaming service for an album over one day and comes even though Apple Music significantly trails industry leader Spotify in total users.

Drake has a lengthy relationship with Apple, which heavily promoted “Scorpion.”

The hotly anticipated album inexplicably appeared two hours late on Spotify.

But “Scorpion” also set a record on Spotify, which heavily featured the album after it went alive.

The site Spotifycharts, which tracks listening data, said that Spotify users streamed the album’s 25 songs more than 132 million times over the first day.

The figures smash the previous record for one-day streaming -- rapper Post Malone’s album “Beerbongs and Bentleys,” which was streamed just under 79 million times on Spotify on the first day of its release in April.

Streaming records are being frequently broken as growing numbers of listeners embrace Spotify, Apple Music and competitors such as Deezer and Tidal, which allow unlimited on-demand music.

Just days ago, the Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin surpassed Drake as the artist with the most regular monthly listeners on Spotify -- but Drake quickly retook the crown with “Scorpion.”

Drake has found massive success releasing sprawling albums and mixtapes of danceable tracks online without consideration to physical formats.
