Kathy Griffin loses CNN deal after photos with fake severed Trump head LOS ANGELES - CNN fired comedian Kathy Griffin from its annual New Year’s Eve broadcast on Wednesday after she drew strong criticism for posing in photographs holding up the likeness of a bloody, severed head resembling U.S. President Donald Trump. The network announced the termination after earlier criticizing the photos as “disgusting and offensive.” Griffin posted a videotaped apology on Tuesday night amid a public outcry from Republicans and Democrats alike over the images, including condemnation from Trump. “Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself,” Trump wrote. “My children, especially my 11year-old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!” The U.S. Secret Service, responsible for presidential security, has opened an inquiry into the posting of Griffin posing with the severedhead replica, a spokesman in Los
Angeles said when asked whether the agency was looking into the incident as a potential threat on the president’s life. “We’re aware of it and we’re investigating it,” the spokesman, George Fernandez, told Reuters. He declined to elaborate. Griffin, 56, a two-time Emmywinning performer known for her deliberately provocative brand of humor, has appeared since 2007 as co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast from Times Square in New York with anchor Anderson Cooper. CNN did not make clear whether it was cutting its New Year’s Eve deal with Griffin for just the upcoming 2017 broadcast or for good. The furor also cost Griffin a show at the Route 66 Casino Hotel outside Albuquerque, New Mexico. LOS ANGELES - Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry will headline a star-studded concert in Manchester, England, on Sunday to benefit victims of the suicide bombing at Grande’s May 22 concert there, organizers announced on Tuesday.
American artists Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams and Usher will also perform at the June 4 concert, along with Britain’s Coldplay, One Direction singer Niall Horan and the Manchester-based band Take That. The benefit will take place at the Old Trafford cricket ground. Proceeds will benefit victims of last week’s suicide bombing at Grande’s show at another venue in the northern English city, the Manchester Arena. Islamic State claimed credit for the bombing, which killed 22 people and took place moments after Grande finished playing. All proceeds from Sunday’s “One Love Manchester” concert will go to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund which was set up by the Manchester City Council in partnership with the British Red Cross. The fund has already raised more than 5 million pounds ($6.4 million), organizers say. Grande, 23, is offering free tickets to the charity concert to all of those who were at her Manchester show on May 22. The suicide bombing injured more than 100, many of them members of Grande’s large, young female fan base. Grande was unharmed but she later canceled several concerts scheduled in London and Europe through June 5. (rtr)

COX’S BAZAR - Left drenched and near destitute by a cyclone that hit Bangladesh a day earlier, thousands of Rohingya refugees hunkered down in the ruins of their camps on Wednesday, waiting for help after a night in the rain. At least seven people were killed and 50 injured by Cyclone Mora, according to Mohammad Ali Hussain, the chief administrator of Cox’s Bazar district, a sliver of land in southeast Bangladesh bordering Myanmar.

Maintain Pancasila through diversity and plurality
The concept of Pancasila with the coat of arms, namely Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, has been applied by the government of Badung from time immemorial. This understanding is realized by maintaining tolerance among religious followers. As evidence, it is realized in the Puja Mandala located at Benoa village, South Kuta. It is very clearly illustrated where a number of places of worship are established in a single complex. The Hindus, Christians, Moslems and Buddhists pray side by side and this indicates that interfaith harmony in Badung district remains to be well established.
This was stated by Deputy Regent of Badung, I Ketut Suiasa, on Tuesday (May 30). Actually, if examined more deeply, the root of conflict problem occurred is not located in the difference. “One of the factors that often cause conflict in the name of difference of tribe, culture and religion is local political interest,” he explained. The birth of Pancasila reminds all elements of the nation that Indonesia is a unitary state consisting of various tribes, cultures and religions. “Although we are different by tribe, race and religion, we still respect each other in order to maintain the unity of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia. NCCTRC Australia trains Bali disaster relief team DENPASAR - Bali regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) in cooperation with the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Center (NCCTRC) of Australia held a Major Incident and Medical Management Support (MIMMS) training for medical team in Bali and the BPBD Bali on Tuesday (May 30). The training was held for three days on May 29-31. NCCTRC Coordinator, Di Brown Faculty, said the purpose of the activity is to make the disaster management team in Bali better prepared when handling disaster. Therefore, this activity is not only followed by the BPBD but also firefighter and other related agencies.
“It does not necessarily mean they are incompetent. It poses a regular training activity conducted in Australia. According to him, it is good to be done in Bali,” he said. Other than in Bali, similar training is also conducted in New Zealand, South Pacific, Cambodia, et cetera. This training is also conducted in those countries not because many Australians there but it indeed happens because there has been good relation established between Australia and the countries including Indonesia. Head of the BPBD Bali, Dewa Made Indra, said that such simulation is the application of the theory having been obtained in
classroom. The theory of victim handling is not only made individually, but also by system both in bomb incident, plane crash or disaster. The handling of these incidents should be carried out by a well-integrated team, from field team identifying victims, sorting out emergency casualties to ambulance management and targeted health facilities. “Registration must be done well to the handling at hospital,” he said. The training was followed by 25 people from the agencies definitely getting involved in case there is an incident. They are Sanglah Hospital, hospital in the neighborhood of Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung,
Gianyar and Tabanan), Bali Police Hospital, Bali Police DVI team, military regional health, Red Cross of Indonesia, fire brigade, BPBD and harbor health. Additionally, there is also a team from Australia amounting to 13 people. The most anticipated incident in Bali is bombing because Australia has bad experience in Bali bombing 1. “They are more focused there anyway, how to handle if there is a bomb incident. Surely, the situation is commonly chaotic. The experience of handling the first Bali bomb was a bit chaotic because it was not supported by good incident management,” he explained. is an institution handling the cases of critical health and trauma. “Like the Bali bomb in the past, it claimed a lot of victims that could not be handled here. They doubted our medical treatment system here, so they took its citizens and even Indonesian citizens to be brought to Darwin because it is the closest,” he concluded. It also has an interest in providing training for the Bali disaster management team because there are many Australian citizens in Bali. “There are a lot of Darwin people here. Gianyar parliament reminds govt of modern store moratorium GIANYAR - Gianyar House of Representatives finally spoke up related to the nationally chained modern stores currently allowed to proliferate in Gianyar district. The legislators of PDI-P Faction also asked the regent of Gianyar to order relevant agency to explain about this condition. However, so far there is no follow-up from the executive related to the moratorium. Now, this legislator from Sukawati constituency again asked the government of Gianyar to pay attention to the
moratorium having become the decision of the Gianyar parliament. “Now, it is the domain of the executive that is not committed and insensitive to what has delivered by the parliament. I ask the regent of Gianyar to seriously pay attention to this moratorium,” he said. Pebriantara also asked the executives to stop the permit of the nationally chained modern markets because the current number has exceeded the quota of 79 units according to the study made by Udayana University for Gianyar district. “We also ask to immediately curb the modern stores

Don’t let swimsuit anxiety suck the fun out of summer
NEW YORK — Farewell spring and hello bathing suit season, for some an anxious time that sucks the fun out of summer.
Not everybody frets over their beach bodies, celebrating instead. For others, it’s a struggle, one that Heidi Wicker in suburban Dallas knows well. But the 41-year-old mother of two has come up with emotional workarounds. “I really hated the way I look in a swimsuit. We have a pool and enjoy having friends and neighbors over during the summer,” Wicker said. “In Texas, that’s May through September.” She chooses the “most functional” swimsuit possible and consciously counts her blessings. “Bottom line is my kids aren’t going to remember how awful I looked in a swimsuit in 2017, but they will remember the fun times we had playing in the pool,” Wicker said. “This year I have a pair of swim shorts and a halter-style top that is super secure.” While Wicker said she could stand to lose 10 or 15 pounds, bathing suit stress isn’t reserved for those of us with curves or bulges we consider trouble spots. Actress and former pageant queen Priyanka Chopra dodged the “Baywatch” bathing suit bullet as the villain in the film version of the old lifeguard TV show, “but in real life,” she said recently, “we’re human beings. Our bodies change and it’s OK.” A thoughtful swimsuit fit with plenty of support can go a long way in calming beach anxiety, especially for bikini wearers. Tops should feel as comfortable as your favorite bra, said longtime friends Emma-Jane Hughes and Ashleigh Hill. They created an affordable line of swimwear last year, Lilly & Lime, specifically for women who wear D cups and up, ranging from 28D to 38HH, though bottoms size up to just 14. People with fit problems might do well to seek out pieces that can be purchased separately such as those at Lillie & Lime. Numerous options along those lines are available. “When choosing a bikini or swimsuit it’s most important that you have the right size, especially when you are bigger busted,” Hughes said. “To find the right size we recommend you get fitted as you would for a bra and choose the bra size and bottom size you would normally wear from a brand that offers tops in cup sizes.” The two also recommend taking into account what you plan to do in a bathing suit.
“If you’re going to be lounging and want to avoid tan lines then go for a bandeau or a balconette (shelf) style,” Hill said. “If you plan to be active or are running after little ones at the beach then a halter with underwire is best for extra support and security.” As for color, Wicker goes for darker hues. Hughes and Hill don’t buy into the black-is-best mentality for women looking to hide. “Choose a color that makes you happy and suits your skin tone,” Hughes said. “Bold colors keep the focus on fun and away from the bits of our body we don’t love to be exposed.” For girls and young women, much of the issue relates
directly to the body shaming that bubbles up on social media, intensifying during beach season. Three years ago, the millennial-focused women’s site Refinery29 launched a campaign, “Take Back the Beach,” to fight back. “We and our readers were really fed up with the messages that young women were receiving when it came to beach season, the idea that you have to look a certain way or take some kind of action to achieve a bikini body, when going to the beach and wearing a swimsuit should just be things that you do to have fun and relax,” said Anna Maltby, deputy editor for health and wellness at Refinery29. “We wanted to ditch all the ideals that tell us we have to look a certain way.” (ap)

Thieves break in villa in Ubud, hundreds of millions vanish
GIANYAR — Theft action is increasingly prevalent in Gianyar region. The latest one is the thieves breaking in the villa located on Jalan Tirta Tawar, Kutuh hamlet, Petulu, Ubud, on Monday (May 29). Due to this incident, the victim of a foreign citizen, Florie Gabriele Simone Valensia, lost a number of valuables with a total value of IDR 333 million. As information compiled, when the victim came home from traveling on Monday afternoon around 14:30, she found the window open. When checked inside, the room looked messy. Inevitably, this foreign citizen familiarly addressed as Florie was surprised to find that all the valuables stored in the room were gone. The missing items are two units of Apple MacBook, one iPad, one hand phone, one gold bracelet, one gold necklace, deposit, account book and cash worth IDR 4 million. Total value of all the victim’s losses
is estimated to reach IDR 333 million. The theft was then reported to Ubud police station. Chief of Ubud Police, Nyoman Wirajaya, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. Based on the crime scene investigation, the theft is alleged to take action by damaging window. “We found traces of wreck on the window so there is possibility if the perpetrator acted by prying window,” he said. His authority is now trying to conduct an investigation through raid against migrants to a number of project workers working around the location. However, so far these efforts have not succeeded. “There are no suspicious movements or project workers suddenly moving or others. Besides, at the location of the theft there are no CCTVs. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses are not aware of the theft action,” he concluded. (kmb35)

HONG KONG — A luxury Hermes handbag shattered the world auction record in Hong Kong on Wednesday, fetching an eyepopping $380,000, Christie’s said. The auction house didn’t identify the buyer of the matte white “Himalaya” crocodile skin Hermes Birkin bag. The handbag was produced in 2014 and has 18 karat gold buckles and strap loops encrusted with 205 diamonds. It fetched 2.94 million Hong Kong dollars ($380,000), which Christie’s says is a record for any handbag sold at auction. After years of putting together performances that feature talented artists from Bali and other parts of Indonesia in her Bali Onstage shows, Jane decided to create a space where the wealth of Indonesian performing arts could expand into contemporary creations. Saraswati Pavillion, in Canggu takes the form of a traditional Javanese ‘gazebo’ and served as the setting for the staging of Jane Chen’s annual Puja Mask Dance last Friday night. The mask she wears in this dance depicts Sekartaji, a character from the ancient Javanese Panji stories. Jakarta native Jane Chen has been living in Bali for over 30 years and has been performing her Puja Mask Dance once a year since 2003, The essence of this dance is praise and although Jane brings a different aspect of herself to it every year, she always performs it as an offering, to Bali, to her masters, to those who have come before us, to nature, to Creator. This year, Jane dedicated her dance to her teacher the late Roejito from whom she received the essence of
stage presence. The dance, she explained is “a tribute to all those who have touched our lives, to all teachers and masters, to mother nature to our Great Creator and tonite’s Puja Mask Dance is also dedicated to a true artist of life, who touched the lives of many in Bali and inspired many people around the world: the beloved Linda Garland who passed away earlier this year”, explained Jane. The evenings performances also included a new choreography by Jane Chen, performed by Sefi, entitled ‘The Alphabet of Scent’ in which essential oil scents were an integral part. The dance performed was the first of many to follow and part of a series of four dances called ‘the Alphabet Series’ that Jane has been performing and elaborating on for some years. The honouring of the endless cycles of birth, death and rebirth was poignantly expressed in an evening that paid homage to the beauty developed over millennial by the people of Indonesia as expressed through their descendants: Jane Chen, dancers Sefi and 8 year old daughter Vio, musicians Barok, Safril and Ajat Lesmana along with light and sound engineer Jonas Sestakresna. Their musical, olfactory and somatic expressions were distinctly contemporary but at the same time clearly rooted in the traditions of this great archipelago that have inspired so many people from all over the world and that came together in a way that gave hope for a better future to all who were present. Philippine crisis deepens as air strike on rebels kills 11 soldiers
BANGLI — Subak Tampuagan at Peninjoan village, Tembuku, faces an irrigation water crisis. It happens because the water is taken advantage by a number of groups including the municipality waterworks (PDAM Bangli) to be made into drinking water. In addition, the crisis is also aggravated by condition of the irrigation network (tertiary channel) destroyed by crabs. As a result, much water seeps into lower region (river). This was recognized by Tabunan sub-group leader, Jero Mangku Setiani, on Tuesday (May 30). Setiani said that indeed Subak Tampuagan is currently facing water crisis to irrigate their paddy fields. It is caused by the sources of springs at some points (upstream) are used by Bangli municipality waterworks for drinking water. In addition, the taking of water by some groups and irrigation channel damaged by crabs has aggravated the water crisis. “In general, these make the subak sub-group face water crisis. The most severe crisis is experienced by subgroups in the downstream,” said Setiani. Jero Setiani said that at the subak Tampuagan there are many crabs roaming around the paddy fields. They also disrupt paddy plants. In keeping with the growing population, the damage to the irrigation channel is also quite severe, causing much water to seep into lower areas to the river. “The crabs are plentiful and make their house in the tertiary channel, so that the water drains leak and water seeps down,” he admitted. He said that previously it had received assistance to repair the irrigation channel, but it only covered a small part considering the tertiary channel is very long. From the upstream to downstream averagely reaches two kilometers. “Government plans to give an improvement this year for gutter 1 along 1,500 meters, gutter 2 along 240 meters and gutter 3 along 240 meters. Hopefully, the assistance could be worked on immediately,” he said. In the meantime, a farmer at Tabunan sub-group, I Wayan Karpa, admitted that he has difficulty to plant rice due to water crisis within the past two years. He and other farmers are also difficult to grow rice. “Tabunan sub-group spreading across 23 hectares of land cannot plant rice because of the water crisis, not to mention the other subgroups. Here, we have five sub-groups. This condition forces me to buy rice. Now, I plant this land with crops,” said Wayan Karpa. (kmb41)

Currently, the flakka has been regulated with the Minister of Health Decree No.2/2017 with chemical name of alpha PVP. “Until now, there has not been any indication if the flakka has entered Bali. Nevertheless, it should be always alerted. In short, any kinds of drug should be rejected and never lured by any persuasion,” he said. In its development, Suastawa asserted that it contains active substances that can threaten and must be aware of is the fentanyl derivative. Flakka has a potential of 10,000 times stronger than morphine or 100 times stronger than heroin. This substance has been studied on May 15-16, 2017 and has been submitted to the ministry
of health to be included into the first group in the appendix to the Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. TOKYO - Japan’s navy and air force began a three-day military exercise with two U.S. aircraft carriers in the Sea of Japan on Thursday adding pressure on North Korea to halt an accelerating ballistic missile programme. Japan’s Maritime Self Defence Force has sent two ships, including one of its four helicopter carriers, the Hyuga, to join the U.S carriers, the USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson, and their eight escort ships, Japan’s military said in a release. Japanese Air Self Defence Force F-15s are taking part in simulated combat with U.S. Navy F-18 fighters at the same time, the military said. “It’s the first time we have exercised with two carriers. MARAWI - An air strike on Islamist rebel holed up in a southern Philippine city has killed 11 government troops, the armed forces said on Thursday, in a major blow to the country’s bid to end its biggest internal security crisis in years. The bombing accident happened on Wednesday when one of two planes bombing rebel positions missed its target in the heart of Marawi City, where ground troops have been battling pro-Islamic State militants holed-up in buildings for nine days. The incident came during what was the first offensive deployment of fixed-wing aircraft in the nine-day operation, aimed at flushing out the Islamist gunmen who have defied expectations by clinging on through days of ground assaults and helicopter rocket attacks. “Sometimes in the fog of war a lot of things could happen. Accidents happen, like this,” Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told a news conference. “It’s very sad to be hitting our own troops,” he added. “There must be a mistake somewhere, either someone directing from the ground, or the pilot.” The Maute group has been a fierce enemy of a military with superior firepower and greater troop strength. The government is concerned that the group’s brazen attack and its resilience could strike a chord with the Islamic State leadership in the Middle East and win its endorsement as its Southeast Asian affiliate. The deaths of the soldiers takes the number of security force members killed to 38, with 19 civilians and 120 rebel fighters killed in the battles in Marawi over the nine days. Lorenzana said militants who were Saudi, Malaysian, Indonesian, Yemeni and Chechen were among eight foreigners killed in the fighting, in what experts say is a sign the Philippines may have a major problem on its hands. An exodus of residents from mainly Muslim Marawi started on May 23, when the Maute rebels ran amok, torching and seizing buildings, stealing police weapons and vehicles, taking hostages, and freeing jailed rebels to rejoin their fight. Various unique and interesting traditions can be found in North Bali. One of them is a tradition characterized by vivacious heroism remaining to exist in the community until these days. The ‘War of Rattan’ or better known as gebug ende can be found at Patas village, Gerokgak subdistrict. Actually, this tradition comes from the lava land (nickname of Karangasem, precisely from Seraya village).

Once-flagging Alaska space business shows signs of liftoff
JUNEAU — When most people think of Alaska, they picture its thick forests, hulking grizzly bears and soaring, snow-covered peaks. What they might not imagine is rockets whisking defense and other payloads into space. But America’s northernmost state has that too, entering the high-tech aerospace business more than 25 years ago as it looked to diversify its oil-reliant economy. The Alaska Aerospace Corp. hit a low point after a rocket exploded at its launch site in 2014 amid a deepening state deficit. The governor later gave it an ultimatum: Become self-sustaining or shut down. Today, Alaska Aerospace has rebuilt its launch site and is again showing signs of liftoff. It is no longer confined to Alaska or government contracts, recently winning, for example, a deal with Rocket Lab to track the company’s rockets and monitor its onboard systems in New Zealand. Gov. Bill Walker said he is impressed by the corporation’s aggressive pursuit of contracts and its “transformation.” His budget office recently freed $2.2 million in state money previously earmarked for the corporation for launch site improvements. “Two years ago, we had a failed rocket, and we had a destroyed facility, and we had no customers,” Alaska Aerospace CEO Craig Campbell said. “We’ve turned the corner.” Alaska sought to develop its aerospace sector in 1991 as states and private organizations
looked to capture a piece of a space industry that had once been the domain of NASA. Alaska Aerospace now runs one of 10 commercial launch sites in the U.S. that are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Some are co-located with federal facilities or have buzzy partnerships. The anchor tenant at New Mexico’s state-owned Spaceport America is Virgin Galactic. Campbell is tightlipped about some of the business at Alaska Aerospace’s launch site on Kodiak Island — about 250 air miles (402 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage in the Gulf of Alaska — because of proprietary concerns. But the remote site is well-positioned for polar launches, which often are used for communication and weather satellites and those that take images of Earth. An advantage Alaska has over
major launch sites is a lack of wait times, said Micah Walter-Range, research and analysis director for the Space Foundation, a space advocacy organization. A boom in smaller satellites tied to cheaper hardware components and other factors also presents opportunity, he said. The corporation launched its first rocket in 1998. It had another 16 launches through 2014, when a rocket carrying an experimental Army strike weapon was blown up after taking off from Kodiak Island. All of the launches it conducted were for the federal government, including NASA. The blast, which damaged launch site facilities, proved pivotal, coinciding with a ballooning state deficit and a diminished appetite among some Alaska legislators to put more state funding toward what some at that time saw as a money-sucking novelty.
State Rep. Scott Kawasaki, a frequent corporation critic, said Alaska Aerospace officials for the past 10 years have said things will be “wildly great.” But Kawasaki said the reality has never measured up. Still, the Fairbanks Democrat said he’s willing to give the corporation time to prove itself amid a changing industry. “I just don’t want them to keep overpromising because this Legislature doesn’t have the money to bail them out in the future,” Kawasaki said. Besides rebuilding its launch site, Alaska Aerospace opened an office in Alabama to try to better compete for aerospace business and landed a multiyear, contract worth up to $80 million, with the federal Missile Defense Agency to test its system for detecting incoming missiles. In addition, the corporation is evaluating building a second launch site closer to the equator so it can handle a wider range of satellites. Campbell called equatorial launches the “predominate orbit to meet the majority of the Earth’s population.” Still, Alaska Aerospace remains at a critical juncture,
with several launches lined up for this year and next and high hopes for becoming more profitable and further establishing itself in the industry. Campbell’s goal is to have at least six launches a year. So far this year, he expects two as part of the Missile Defense testing program and one involving a company working on a small rocket. He declined to identify the company. The corporation has 16 staff, down from 44 when Campbell took over. It also has a contingency of about 14 contractors, many of whom are former corporation employees, he said. State Rep. Louise Stutes, a Kodiak Republican, said an influx of activity surrounding a launch boosts the region’s economy, though she noted the need to at times close roads for activities at the site has rankled some residents. About 13,500 people live in the Kodiak Island Borough. Stutes, one of two nonvoting legislative members on the corporation’s board, called the facility first-class and a great asset. “You just think, ‘Oh my God. This is in Kodiak?’” she said.(ap)

This gebug ende attraction is generally performed on the sidelines of breaks in the fields at noon or evening. It is commonly held prior to the planting season in the field. A coach of gebug ende for children Wayan Nadi said that during dry season the tradition is held to ap-
peal to God in order to bring down a rain. “This tradition is habitually held during dry seasons. If the rain late long in the season, gebug ende will be held. Originally this tradition comes from the Seraya village, Karangasem,” he said. A senior figure of Patas village, Ketut Koroh, said that if one of the players bleeds due to the blow of rattan stick, there is a possibility
to rain. In short, according to the belief of Seraya people, the gebug game is held at this village to appeal to God for rain for the sake of agricultural purposes. Apparently this tradition is not just to beg for rain. “If something bad happens, this gebug tradition can be held. For example, there is uncontrollable pest attack, this gebug is the repellent. After hold-
ing the gebug, by degrees the bad things will disappear and be back to normal as before. Whatever bad things are, if neutralized by this gebug game then it will certainly be destroyed. It is according to public belief,” he said. This attraction usually takes place in public places by inviting opponents at the village. Gebug game is played by two small chil-
dren, adults and parents. Amid the current advancement of technology, the gebug tradition having existed in the Bali Aga era is already almost extinct. So, we as the heir of the culture should duly boast and preserve its existence. It is the cultural journey of Gebug Ende from lava land to Panji Sakti land (the nickname of Buleleng district). (kmb)
Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, Devotees Appeal for Salvation and Welfare
Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan or commonly known as Buda Kliwon Pahang falling on Wednesday (May 10) is the end of the series of Galungan feast day. It is marked by withdrawing the penjor and burning it. Likewise, all the attributes of the penjor such as bakang, lamak, sampian and so on are burned. The ashes are put into a young ivory coconut and then buried in the house yard. Ashes of the penjor symbolize prosperity, so that on that day the Hindus plead to God to be blessed with fertility. However, before withdrawing the penjor, people must first put offerings or canang on the bamboo platform shrine that the series of Galungan feast day has already completed. It is re-
sumed with masegeh procession, including at the location of penjor. Chairman of Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana said that the series of Galungan feast day ends on Buda Kliwon Pahang. Thus, the preaching of dharma has lasted for 42 days. During the series of Galungan is also known as the Uncal Balung. During that time, people generally abstain from organizing Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices) ritual activities, including wedding, except for pujawali or festival at temple or family or clan temple happening to fall during this period. After Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, people usually go back to choosing auspicious
days to perform Panca Yadnya ceremony, including wedding. Prof. Sudiana said that after the end of the Galungan series, people are reminded to always be able to apply the values ??of dharma (truth) and maintain victory against adharma. Human must be able to really win and take advantage of the graces bestowed on Galungan. “On Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, we ask salvation, prosperity and protection from hazardous things to Motherland,” he said. Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan also poses an expression of gratitude to deities because we have been able to carry out the teachings during the Galungan feast day well. “Since then, human beings have been mature to
bring themselves, not tied to adharma. They are considered to have possessed good thoughts, words and deeds so that they are ready to live their life well according to the teachings of dharma,” he asserted. After that, explained Prof. Sudiana, people just need to implement the values ??of dharma in everyday life to gain peace and tranquility. During the series of Galungan festivities lasting for one month and seven days, people are encouraged to control themselves in order to live together and can perform services, dedication and quality improvement of human resources. As U.S. retreats, EU and China seek climate leadership at summit
BRUSSELS - China and the European Union will seek on Friday to save an international pact against climate change from which U.S. President Donald Trump appears to be set to withdraw.
As China emerges as Europe’s unlikely global partner on areas from free trade to security, Premier Li Keqiang will meet top EU officials at a summit in Brussels that will also discuss North Korea’s missile tests. In a statement backed by all 28 EU states, the European Union and China will commit to full implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, EU and Chinese officials said. The joint statement, the first between the China and the EU, commits to cutting back on fossil fuels, developing more green technology and helping raise $100 billion a year by 2020 to help poorer countries cut emissions. “The EU and China consider climate action and the clean energy transition an imperative more important than ever,” the statement, by European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and China’s Li, will say. “The increasing impacts of climate change require a decisive response,” they will say. China asked that the annual the summit, normally held in mid-July, be brought forward to press home President Xi Jinping’s defence of open trade at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, in response to Trump’s protectionist stance. In a broader final communique focusing on a range of other issues, Li, Juncker and Tusk are expected to commit to free trade and reduce a global steel glut that Europe and the United States say is an attempt by China to corner local markets.

Saving Javan rhinos from extinction starts with counting them – and it’s not easy
The Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is found only at the very western tip of the Indonesian island of Java, in the rainforest habitats of Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP). However, this wasn’t always so. Many species have small natural ranges, but Javan rhinos once inhabited much of Southeast Asia. Now landscape changes, habitat loss and hunting have reduced their numbers to a precarious few. The last known Javan rhino in mainland Asia was poached in 2009. Today Javan rhinos are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Recovering any wild animal population with so few individuals remaining is very difficult. Small populations grow slowly even in the best of circumstances. And if even a few animals are lost to poaching, disease or other factors, the loss represents a relatively large proportion of the population. It also is very hard to count small populations and characterize their distribution accurately. Often this critical information is poorly known, which makes it challenging for scientists to track the population and evaluate whether their actions are having positive effects. Nonetheless, scientists and the Indonesian government are forming a plan to rescue this imperiled species. Why counting rhinos is hard
The rhino lineage has survived 50 million years through ice ages and attacks from prehistoric animals, such as the “dog-bear” (Hemicyon sansaniensis). Rhinos play a significant role in structuring ecosystems. The Javan rhino creates unique habitats within the rainforest by dispersing seeds, creating mud wallows and removing large amounts of understory plants. Losing it would mean a less diverse forest. But despite almost a century of studies on the Javan rhino, we still know relatively little about them. The first estimate of the rhino population in UKNP, made in 1937, put their numbers at 20 to 25. Since then, at least 36 population surveys have attempted to count the rhinos,
but most have failed to account reliably for the entire population or provide much insight into the factors that drive their distribution within UKNP. Javan rhinos range over large areas of dense and swampy rainforest, and researchers rarely see them. Instead we find tracks and dung, which help us understand the habitats that rhinos use, but are rarely good indicators of population size. More recently, scientists set up camera traps to capture images of rhinos, but without high-quality images it was hard to tell individual animals apart. Over the past four years, I have worked as an external scientific advisor with researchers and biologists from World Wildlife Fund Indonesia and the United States, UKNP biologists, Global Wildlife Conservation and the Indonesian nongovernment agency YABI to help create a robust strategy for monitoring Javan rhinos. Building on past efforts, my colleagues developed a systematic approach to deploy camera traps
throughout the rhino habitat of UKNP. Expert field biologists trekked over intense rainforest terrain to install cameras at 178 locations. Each camera was set to record a high-quality video clip of any animal that walked past. While biologists are rarely lucky enough to see one of the rhinos, their hard work keeping the cameras operating over the course of a year led to obtaining 36,104 video clips, of which 1,660 were of rhino. My role was to work with these expert biologists to develop robust statistical methods using these video data to provide estimates of population size and distribution. First, however, we had to ensure that we could reliably identify individuals from the videos. We did this by having three independent teams identify rhinos and compare results. This led to a multi-step identification process that uses morphological features, such as sex, horn shape and position, skin wrinkles around the eyes, neck skin folds and scars. Once we could recognize in-
dividual rhinos, we could figure out how often we saw each rhino and where. We fit these data using statistical models to estimate rhino movement, population size and spatial distribution. We outline our developments and findings in a new research paper, published in the journal Conservation Letters. Most importantly, we were able to precisely estimate the population of Javan rhinos at 62 animals. We saw some positive signs, such as videos of calves and juvenile rhinos, but the population does not appear to be growing. Javan rhino populations generally do not grow very fast. Females typically reach sexual maturity by three to four years of age, but males typically aren’t mature until six years of age. Females have only one calf at a time and will typically not produce another for four to five years. Their gestation period is 16 months. Using our statistical model, we also found that male rhinos range over larger areas than females and that both sexes prefer low-elevation areas, often near the coastline. They
almost completely avoid mountainous regions of the national park. Rhinos also prefer to be close to mud wallows, where they can spend much of a day caking their skin with mud to regulate their body temperature, ward off biting insects and remove parasites. Forming a conservation plan
With this new information in hand, we are working to help the Indonesian government and its conservation partners take steps to further protect Javan rhinos in UKNP and preserve the species. Our research shows that the rhinos are at serious risk from tsunamis, since their preferred habitat is near the coastline. Just off the coast of UKNP lies the Sunda Arc, an area of converging tectonic plates that routinely cause earthquakes which can trigger tsunamis. And just north of UKNP is Anak Krakatau volcano, which has been forming since the 1920s within the caldera of Krakatau (often misspelled Krakatoa), the famous volcano that exploded in 1883, creating tsunamis that killed more than 30,000 people. Anak Krakatau, or “child of Krakatau,” erupts frequently and has high potential to produce tsunamis. Protecting the Javan rhino from extinction will require establishing additional populations, which in turn will require removing some rhinos from UKNP. Translocating wild animals is a common approach in conservation, although it can pose notable risks to the animals. But given the risks to Javan rhinos as a species, doing nothing is not a viable solution. This recovery effort will require significant investment and partnerships across governments, nongovernment agencies and universities. Conservationists and the Indonesian government have discussed the idea of establishing additional Javan rhino populations for decades. Our research provides the scientific rigor to ensure we have the basic demographic information needed to make these decisions and the impetus to move forward without delay. (ap)

Understated Nadal hits top gear
PARIS - To Rafa Nadal’s extraordinary list of achievements in Paris, the nine-times French Open champion might well add ‘Master of Understatement’. “I think I played a good match,” the Spaniard offered, almost as a question, when asked about his form in thrashing Robin Haase 6-1 6-4 6-3. There would be few in the Roland Garros crowds on Wednesday who would disagree with that analysis - least of all Dutchman Haase, who appeared shell-shocked at the end. “I think I did a lot of things well this afternoon,” Nadal added, with almost comedic understatement. Nadal was irresistible. Pummelling the ball with such force that it appeared distorted into an oval shape at times, he was able to toy with his opponent until ready to finish him off. The hour spent drilling forehand after forehand on the main showcourt in the morning before fans were admitted had been time well spent.

FLORIDA - The marketability of Tiger Woods will suffer following his arrest for driving under the influence, but the former world number one golfer’s current sponsors will likely stay by his side, according to experts. Woods, who had surgery in April to relieve back pain, blamed the incident on prescription drugs, but that was not enough to keep his droopy-eyed mug shot from being etched in the minds of many who were once captivated by his dominance on the course. Still, despite his struggles on and off the course, Woods is the greatest golfer of his generation and sponsors like Nike, Bridgestone Golf, Monster Energy and TaylorMade are not likely to rush and cut ties with him, marketing experts told Reuters. “They have to be very measured in terms of their response to their relation with him,” said David Carter, professor of sports business at the University of Southern California’s Marshal School of Business. “He may not be delivering value but you could also be doing harm to your own brand if you cut and run on a guy with such global notoriety.” Woods is second on the all-time list with 14 major titles but a player whose famous fist pump and beaming smile were once a regular site on the PGA Tour has lost his form and barely played in recent years. Most of his sponsors, when asked by Reuters if they would review their agreements with Woods
in light of Monday’s DUI arrest, either did not respond to requests for comment or said it was inappropriate to do so at this time. Bridgestone Golf, however, said they “will continue to monitor this situation and gather information from the appropriate sources investigating the matter.” But details of the arrest report which stated, among other things, that Woods was asleep at the wheel of a parked car with the engine running and was disoriented when woken up by a police officer, cannot be sitting well with sponsors. And with Woods expected to miss the rest of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season after back surgery, his level of appeal to companies may be at an all-time low. “You can overcome a DUI if you are a big enough star and you keep winning,” said Bob Dorfman, creative director of Baker Street Advertising in San Francisco. “But you can’t overcome not being on the course for months, not winning championships and being pretty much a non entity in the golf world. And that’s what Tiger has become and the prospects don’t look very promising for him.” This is not the first time Woods has made headlines away from the course. In 2009, a sex scandal turned his previously unblemished life and career upside down. It also cost Woods a number of endorsement deals, while other sponsors shifted away from using him in marketing but did not end their contracts with him. (rtr)

MADRID — Cristiano Ronaldo has saved his best for last. Ronaldo enters the Champions League final playing his best soccer of the season, peaking at the right time as Real Madrid gets ready to take on Juventus on Saturday in Cardiff, Wales. “I feel good,” Ronaldo said before traveling to Britain, “in great form.” The Portugal forward paced himself like never before this season, skipping several games so he could stay fresh and thrive in the final stretch. And all the rest paid off, with him scoring 14 goals in his last nine matches for his best run of the season. He scored two consecutive hat tricks in the Champions League, one in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich and another in the semifinals against Atletico Madrid. In Madrid’s final three Spanish league games, he scored five goals to lead the team to its first title in five years. Ronaldo is not hiding is confidence going into Saturday’s game. “We must go into the match with humility, but showing attitude and character, showing that we are the better team,” Ronaldo said. “Juventus is a great team, but I think we are better. I have the feeling that we are going to play a great match and win. We are thinking positive.” It had been a lackluster season for Ronaldo’s standards, and his slow start kept him from having a chance to reach 50 goals for the first
time since 2009-10, which was his debut season with Madrid. He arrives in the final in Cardiff with 40 goals. He also struggled early in the Champions League, scoring only twice in his first eight games, but ended with eight goals in his last four matches, becoming the first player to break the 100-goal mark in the European competition. “We are in a great moment and we have to take advantage of it,” Ronaldo said. He credited his great run to coach Zinedine Zidane’s ability to keep the team competitive despite constantly rotating the squad. “I’m in better shape physically than in other seasons,” the 32-year-old Ronaldo said. “Zidane intelligently managed the squad.” Ronaldo has done well when facing Juventus, having scored five goals in the four matches he played against the Italian champions while with Madrid. Two of the goals came in the semifinals of the Champions League in 2015, when Juventus advanced 3-2 before eventually losing the title to Barcelona. Madrid is trying to become the first team to win back-to-back European Cup titles since the competition’s new format was created in 1992. Ronaldo will be trying to win his fourth Champions League trophy. His first came with Manchester United in 2008, and the other two with Madrid in 2014 and 2016. CAS upholds transfer ban on Atletico Madrid until 2018 GENEVA — Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday, hurting Manchester United’s hopes of signing France forward Antoine Griezmann. The FIFA ban prevents Atletico from registering new players until January. Atletico had lined up Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette as a potential replacement for Griezmann. “This ruling is unfair and causes an irreparable damage to our club,” Atletico said in a statement. FIFA imposed a one-year ban on Atletico last year for signing dozens of youth players in breach of rules that prevent international child trafficking and luring youngsters from their home country. Atletico denied wrongdoing, though it agreed not to sign players in the January transfer window while its appeal at CAS went ahead. “With this decision, FIFA considers that CAS has shown once again clear and strong support for FIFA’s efforts to protect underage players,” the world soccer body said in a statement. Atletico can still sell Griezmann with Man United seemingly ready to pay a release clause in his contract reportedly of more than 100 million euros ($112 million). Still, Atletico would have to cope with only its existing players through the group stage of the Champions League and first half of the league season before it could add to its squad. Those signings were all approved by the Spanish soccer federation, which is led by longtime FIFA vice president Angel Maria Villar. The CAS judging panel acknowledged that “not all of the alleged violations of the FIFA regulations concerning the registration of minor players could be upheld.” The fine imposed by FIFA on Atletico was cut to 550,000 Swiss francs ($566,000) from 900,000 Swiss francs ($927,000). Although the FIFA sanction is typically called a “transfer ban,” it is technically a block on registering new players. Atletico can sign new players this offseason but they could not play in a competitive match until January. When Barcelona served a one-year FIFA ban in 2015 it still signed Arda Turan in the offseason from Atletico. The Turkey midfielder was then sidelined for several months before making his debut in January 2016. Atletico target Lacazette has a “verbal agreement” to move to Madrid, Lyon said two weeks ago. MADRID — Cristiano Ronaldo has saved his best for last. Ronaldo enters the Champions League final playing his best soccer of the season, peaking at the right time as Real Madrid gets ready to take on Juventus on Saturday in Cardiff, Wales. “I feel good,” Ronaldo said before traveling to Britain, “in great form.” The Portugal forward paced himself like never before this season, skipping several games so he could stay fresh and thrive in the final stretch. And all the rest paid off, with him scoring 14 goals in his last nine matches for his best run of the season. He scored two consecutive hat tricks in the Champions League, one in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich and another in the semifinals against Atletico Madrid. In Madrid’s final three Spanish league games, he scored five goals to lead the team to its first title in five years. Ronaldo is not hiding is confidence going into Saturday’s game. “We must go into the match with humility, but showing attitude and character, showing that we are the better team,” Ronaldo said. “Juventus is a great team, but I think we are better. I have the feeling that we are going to play a great match and win. We are thinking positive.” It had been a lackluster season for Ronaldo’s standards, and his slow start kept him from having a chance to reach 50 goals for the first
time since 2009-10, which was his debut season with Madrid. He arrives in the final in Cardiff with 40 goals. He also struggled early in the Champions League, scoring only twice in his first eight games, but ended with eight goals in his last four matches, becoming the first player to break the 100-goal mark in the European competition. “We are in a great moment and we have to take advantage of it,” Ronaldo said. He credited his great run to coach Zinedine Zidane’s ability to keep the team competitive despite constantly rotating the squad. “I’m in better shape physically than in other seasons,” the 32-year-old Ronaldo said. “Zidane intelligently managed the squad.” Ronaldo has done well when facing Juventus, having scored five goals in the four matches he played against the Italian champions while with Madrid. Two of the goals came in the semifinals of the Champions League in 2015, when Juventus advanced 3-2 before eventually losing the title to Barcelona. Madrid is trying to become the first team to win back-to-back European Cup titles since the competition’s new format was created in 1992. Ronaldo will be trying to win his fourth Champions League trophy. His first came with Manchester United in 2008, and the other two with Madrid in 2014 and 2016. CAS upholds transfer ban on Atletico Madrid until 2018 GENEVA — Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday, hurting Manchester United’s hopes of signing France forward Antoine Griezmann. The FIFA ban prevents Atletico from registering new players until January. Atletico had lined up Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette as a potential replacement for Griezmann. “This ruling is unfair and causes an irreparable damage to our club,” Atletico said in a statement. FIFA imposed a one-year ban on Atletico last year for signing dozens of youth players in breach of rules that prevent international child trafficking and luring youngsters from their home country. Atletico denied wrongdoing, though it agreed not to sign players in the January transfer window while its appeal at CAS went ahead. “With this decision, FIFA considers that CAS has shown once again clear and strong support for FIFA’s efforts to protect underage players,” the world soccer body said in a statement. Atletico can still sell Griezmann with Man United seemingly ready to pay a release clause in his contract reportedly of more than 100 million euros ($112 million). Still, Atletico would have to cope with only its existing players through the group stage of the Champions League and first half of the league season before it could add to its squad. Although the FIFA sanction is typically called a “transfer ban,” it is technically a block on registering new players. Atletico can sign new players this offseason but they could not play in a competitive match until January. Understated Nadal hits top gear
PARIS - To Rafa Nadal’s extraordinary list of achievements in Paris, the nine-times French Open champion might well add ‘Master of Understatement’. “I think I played a good match,” the Spaniard offered, almost as a question, when asked about his form in thrashing Robin Haase 6-1 6-4 6-3. There would be few in the Roland Garros crowds on Wednesday who would disagree with that analysis - least of all Dutchman Haase, who appeared shell-shocked at the end. “I think I did a lot of things well this afternoon,” Nadal added, with almost comedic understatement. Nadal was irresistible. Pummelling the ball with such force that it appeared distorted into an oval shape at times, he was able to toy with his opponent until ready to finish him off. FLORIDA - The marketability of Tiger Woods will suffer following his arrest for driving under the influence, but the former world number one golfer’s current sponsors will likely stay by his side, according to experts. Woods, who had surgery in April to relieve back pain, blamed the incident on prescription drugs, but that was not enough to keep his droopy-eyed mug shot from being etched in the minds of many who were once captivated by his dominance on the course. Still, despite his struggles on and off the course, Woods is the greatest golfer of his generation and sponsors like Nike, Bridgestone Golf, Monster Energy and TaylorMade are not likely to rush and cut ties with him, marketing experts told Reuters. “They have to be very measured in terms of their response to their relation with him,” said David Carter, professor of sports business at the University of Southern California’s Marshal School of Business. “He may not be delivering value but you could also be doing harm to your own brand if you cut and run on a guy with such global notoriety.” Woods is second on the all-time list with 14 major titles but a player whose famous fist pump and beaming smile were once a regular site on the PGA Tour has lost his form and barely played in recent years. Most of his sponsors, when asked by Reuters if they would review their agreements with Woods
in light of Monday’s DUI arrest, either did not respond to requests for comment or said it was inappropriate to do so at this time. And with Woods expected to miss the rest of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season after back surgery, his level of appeal to companies may be at an all-time low. “You can overcome a DUI if you are a big enough star and you keep winning,” said Bob Dorfman, creative director of Baker Street Advertising in San Francisco. “But you can’t overcome not being on the course for months, not winning championships and being pretty much a non entity in the golf world. And that’s what Tiger has become and the prospects don’t look very promising for him.” This is not the first time Woods has made headlines away from the course. In 2009, a sex scandal turned his previously unblemished life and career upside down. As U.S. retreats, EU and China seek climate leadership at summit
BRUSSELS - China and the European Union will seek on Friday to save an international pact against climate change from which U.S. President Donald Trump appears to be set to withdraw.
As China emerges as Europe’s unlikely global partner on areas from free trade to security, Premier Li Keqiang will meet top EU officials at a summit in Brussels that will also discuss North Korea’s missile tests. In a statement backed by all 28 EU states, the European Union and China will commit to full implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, EU and Chinese officials said. The joint statement, the first between the China and the EU, commits to cutting back on fossil fuels, developing more green technology and helping raise $100 billion a year by 2020 to help poorer countries cut emissions. “The EU and China consider climate action and the clean energy transition an imperative more important than ever,” the statement, by European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and China’s Li, will say. “The increasing impacts of climate change require a decisive response,” they will say. China asked that the annual the summit, normally held in mid-July, be brought forward to press home President Xi Jinping’s defence of open trade at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, in response to Trump’s protectionist stance. In a broader final communique focusing on a range of other issues, Li, Juncker and Tusk are expected to commit to free trade and reduce a global steel glut that Europe and the United States say is an attempt by China to corner local markets.

Afghan capital mourns victims of truck bomb blast as anger swirls KABUL - Kabul on Thursday mourned victims of a powerful truck bomb that killed at least 80 people and wounded hundreds amid growing public anger at the government’s failure to prevent yet another deadly attack in the heart of the Afghan capital. Wednesday’s blast, at the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, ripped through a traffic-clogged street, packed with people on their way to school or work during the morning rush hour, causing hundreds of casualties in an instant and
sending a tower of black smoke into the sky. In scale, it was one of the worst such attacks since the U.S.-led campaign to oust the Taliban in 2001 but in kind, it was only the latest in a grim series that has killed thousands of civilians over the years. President Ashraf Ghani made a televised address late on Wednesday, calling for national unity in the face of the attack, which his National Directorate for Security blamed on the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network, but he faces an

Saving Javan rhinos from extinction starts with counting them – and it’s not easy
The Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is found only at the very western tip of the Indonesian island of Java, in the rainforest habitats of Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP). However, this wasn’t always so. Many species have small natural ranges, but Javan rhinos once inhabited much of Southeast Asia. Now landscape changes, habitat loss and hunting have reduced their numbers to a precarious few. The last known Javan rhino in mainland Asia was poached in 2009. Today Javan rhinos are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Recovering any wild animal population with so few individuals remaining is very difficult. Small populations grow slowly even in the best of circumstances. And if even a few animals are lost to poaching, disease or other factors, the loss represents a relatively large proportion of the population. It also is very hard to count small populations and characterize their distribution accurately. Often this critical information is poorly known, which makes it challenging for scientists to track the population and evaluate whether their actions are having positive effects. Nonetheless, scientists and the Indonesian government are forming a plan to rescue this imperiled species. Why counting rhinos is hard
The rhino lineage has survived 50 million years through ice ages and attacks from prehistoric animals, such as the “dog-bear” (Hemicyon sansaniensis). Rhinos play a significant role in structuring ecosystems. The Javan rhino creates unique habitats within the rainforest by dispersing seeds, creating mud wallows and removing large amounts of understory plants. Losing it would mean a less diverse forest. But despite almost a century of studies on the Javan rhino, we still know relatively little about them. The first estimate of the rhino population in UKNP, made in 1937, put their numbers at 20 to 25. Since then, at least 36 population surveys have attempted to count the rhinos,
but most have failed to account reliably for the entire population or provide much insight into the factors that drive their distribution within UKNP. Javan rhinos range over large areas of dense and swampy rainforest, and researchers rarely see them. Instead we find tracks and dung, which help us understand the habitats that rhinos use, but are rarely good indicators of population size. More recently, scientists set up camera traps to capture images of rhinos, but without high-quality images it was hard to tell individual animals apart. Over the past four years, I have worked as an external scientific advisor with researchers and biologists from World Wildlife Fund Indonesia and the United States, UKNP biologists, Global Wildlife Conservation and the Indonesian nongovernment agency YABI to help create a robust strategy for monitoring Javan rhinos. Building on past efforts, my colleagues developed a systematic approach to deploy camera traps
throughout the rhino habitat of UKNP. Expert field biologists trekked over intense rainforest terrain to install cameras at 178 locations. Each camera was set to record a high-quality video clip of any animal that walked past. While biologists are rarely lucky enough to see one of the rhinos, their hard work keeping the cameras operating over the course of a year led to obtaining 36,104 video clips, of which 1,660 were of rhino. My role was to work with these expert biologists to develop robust statistical methods using these video data to provide estimates of population size and distribution. First, however, we had to ensure that we could reliably identify individuals from the videos. We did this by having three independent teams identify rhinos and compare results. This led to a multi-step identification process that uses morphological features, such as sex, horn shape and position, skin wrinkles around the eyes, neck skin folds and scars. Once we could recognize in-
dividual rhinos, we could figure out how often we saw each rhino and where. We fit these data using statistical models to estimate rhino movement, population size and spatial distribution. We outline our developments and findings in a new research paper, published in the journal Conservation Letters. Most importantly, we were able to precisely estimate the population of Javan rhinos at 62 animals. We saw some positive signs, such as videos of calves and juvenile rhinos, but the population does not appear to be growing. Javan rhino populations generally do not grow very fast. Females typically reach sexual maturity by three to four years of age, but males typically aren’t mature until six years of age. Females have only one calf at a time and will typically not produce another for four to five years. Their gestation period is 16 months. Using our statistical model, we also found that male rhinos range over larger areas than females and that both sexes prefer low-elevation areas, often near the coastline. They
almost completely avoid mountainous regions of the national park. Rhinos also prefer to be close to mud wallows, where they can spend much of a day caking their skin with mud to regulate their body temperature, ward off biting insects and remove parasites. Forming a conservation plan
With this new information in hand, we are working to help the Indonesian government and its conservation partners take steps to further protect Javan rhinos in UKNP and preserve the species. Our research shows that the rhinos are at serious risk from tsunamis, since their preferred habitat is near the coastline. Just off the coast of UKNP lies the Sunda Arc, an area of converging tectonic plates that routinely cause earthquakes which can trigger tsunamis. And just north of UKNP is Anak Krakatau volcano, which has been forming since the 1920s within the caldera of Krakatau (often misspelled Krakatoa), the famous volcano that exploded in 1883, creating tsunamis that killed more than 30,000 people. Anak Krakatau, or “child of Krakatau,” erupts frequently and has high potential to produce tsunamis. Protecting the Javan rhino from extinction will require establishing additional populations, which in turn will require removing some rhinos from UKNP. Translocating wild animals is a common approach in conservation, although it can pose notable risks to the animals. But given the risks to Javan rhinos as a species, doing nothing is not a viable solution. This recovery effort will require significant investment and partnerships across governments, nongovernment agencies and universities. Conservationists and the Indonesian government have discussed the idea of establishing additional Javan rhino populations for decades. Our research provides the scientific rigor to ensure we have the basic demographic information needed to make these decisions and the impetus to move forward without delay. (ap)

The ‘War of Rattan’ or better known as gebug ende can be found at Patas village, Gerokgak subdistrict. Actually, this tradition comes from the lava land (nickname of Karangasem, precisely from Seraya village).

JUNEAU — When most people think of Alaska, they picture its thick forests, hulking grizzly bears and soaring, snow-covered peaks. What they might not imagine is rockets whisking defense and other payloads into space. But America’s northernmost state has that too, entering the high-tech aerospace business more than 25 years ago as it looked to diversify its oil-reliant economy. The Alaska Aerospace Corp. hit a low point after a rocket exploded at its launch site in 2014 amid a deepening state deficit. The governor later gave it an ultimatum: Become self-sustaining or shut down. Today, Alaska Aerospace has rebuilt its launch site and is again showing signs of liftoff. It is no longer confined to Alaska or government contracts, recently winning, for example, a deal with Rocket Lab to track the company’s rockets and monitor its onboard systems in New Zealand. Gov. Bill Walker said he is impressed by the corporation’s aggressive pursuit of contracts and its “transformation.” His budget office recently freed $2.2 million in state money previously earmarked for the corporation for launch site improvements. “Two years ago, we had a failed rocket, and we had a destroyed facility, and we had no customers,” Alaska Aerospace CEO Craig Campbell said. “We’ve turned the corner.” Alaska sought to develop its aerospace sector in 1991 as states and private organizations
looked to capture a piece of a space industry that had once been the domain of NASA. Alaska Aerospace now runs one of 10 commercial launch sites in the U.S. that are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Some are co-located with federal facilities or have buzzy partnerships. The anchor tenant at New Mexico’s state-owned Spaceport America is Virgin Galactic. Campbell is tightlipped about some of the business at Alaska Aerospace’s launch site on Kodiak Island — about 250 air miles (402 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage in the Gulf of Alaska — because of proprietary concerns. But the remote site is well-positioned for polar launches, which often are used for communication and weather satellites and those that take images of Earth. An advantage Alaska has over
major launch sites is a lack of wait times, said Micah Walter-Range, research and analysis director for the Space Foundation, a space advocacy organization. A boom in smaller satellites tied to cheaper hardware components and other factors also presents opportunity, he said. The corporation launched its first rocket in 1998. It had another 16 launches through 2014, when a rocket carrying an experimental Army strike weapon was blown up after taking off from Kodiak Island. All of the launches it conducted were for the federal government, including NASA. The blast, which damaged launch site facilities, proved pivotal, coinciding with a ballooning state deficit and a diminished appetite among some Alaska legislators to put more state funding toward what some at that time saw as a money-sucking novelty.
State Rep. Scott Kawasaki, a frequent corporation critic, said Alaska Aerospace officials for the past 10 years have said things will be “wildly great.” But Kawasaki said the reality has never measured up. Still, the Fairbanks Democrat said he’s willing to give the corporation time to prove itself amid a changing industry. “I just don’t want them to keep overpromising because this Legislature doesn’t have the money to bail them out in the future,” Kawasaki said. Besides rebuilding its launch site, Alaska Aerospace opened an office in Alabama to try to better compete for aerospace business and landed a multiyear, contract worth up to $80 million, with the federal Missile Defense Agency to test its system for detecting incoming missiles. In addition, the corporation is evaluating building a second launch site closer to the equator so it can handle a wider range of satellites. Campbell called equatorial launches the “predominate orbit to meet the majority of the Earth’s population.” Still, Alaska Aerospace remains at a critical juncture,
with several launches lined up for this year and next and high hopes for becoming more profitable and further establishing itself in the industry. Campbell’s goal is to have at least six launches a year. So far this year, he expects two as part of the Missile Defense testing program and one involving a company working on a small rocket. He declined to identify the company. The corporation has 16 staff, down from 44 when Campbell took over. It also has a contingency of about 14 contractors, many of whom are former corporation employees, he said. State Rep. Louise Stutes, a Kodiak Republican, said an influx of activity surrounding a launch boosts the region’s economy, though she noted the need to at times close roads for activities at the site has rankled some residents. About 13,500 people live in the Kodiak Island Borough. Stutes, one of two nonvoting legislative members on the corporation’s board, called the facility first-class and a great asset. “You just think, ‘Oh my God. This is in Kodiak?’” she said.(ap)

Other than the players, in the arena of the game there are also two people serving as referee or pakembar. Even though their body is hit by rattan, they are still happy and dance with joy. Meanwhile, the sound of the baleganjur gamelan music is played as a companion to heat up the atmosphere of “the war.” At the same time, the audience keeps cheering to give support to the one on one fight. This gebug ende attraction is generally performed on the sidelines of breaks in the fields at noon or evening. It is commonly held prior to the planting season in the field. A coach of gebug ende for children Wayan Nadi said that during dry season the tradition is held to ap-
peal to God in order to bring down a rain. “This tradition is habitually held during dry seasons. If the rain late long in the season, gebug ende will be held. Originally this tradition comes from the Seraya village, Karangasem,” he said. A senior figure of Patas village, Ketut Koroh, said that if one of the players bleeds due to the blow of rattan stick, there is a possibility
to rain. In short, according to the belief of Seraya people, the gebug game is held at this village to appeal to God for rain for the sake of agricultural purposes. Apparently this tradition is not just to beg for rain. “If something bad happens, this gebug tradition can be held. For example, there is uncontrollable pest attack, this gebug is the repellent. After hold-
ing the gebug, by degrees the bad things will disappear and be back to normal as before. Whatever bad things are, if neutralized by this gebug game then it will certainly be destroyed. It is according to public belief,” he said. This attraction usually takes place in public places by inviting opponents at the village. Gebug game is played by two small chil-
dren, adults and parents. Amid the current advancement of technology, the gebug tradition having existed in the Bali Aga era is already almost extinct. Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, Devotees Appeal for Salvation and Welfare
Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan or commonly known as Buda Kliwon Pahang falling on Wednesday (May 10) is the end of the series of Galungan feast day. It is marked by withdrawing the penjor and burning it. Likewise, all the attributes of the penjor such as bakang, lamak, sampian and so on are burned. The ashes are put into a young ivory coconut and then buried in the house yard. Ashes of the penjor symbolize prosperity, so that on that day the Hindus plead to God to be blessed with fertility. However, before withdrawing the penjor, people must first put offerings or canang on the bamboo platform shrine that the series of Galungan feast day has already completed. It is re-
sumed with masegeh procession, including at the location of penjor. Chairman of Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana said that the series of Galungan feast day ends on Buda Kliwon Pahang. Thus, the preaching of dharma has lasted for 42 days. During the series of Galungan is also known as the Uncal Balung. During that time, people generally abstain from organizing Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices) ritual activities, including wedding, except for pujawali or festival at temple or family or clan temple happening to fall during this period. After Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, people usually go back to choosing auspicious
days to perform Panca Yadnya ceremony, including wedding. Prof. Sudiana said that after the end of the Galungan series, people are reminded to always be able to apply the values ??of dharma (truth) and maintain victory against adharma. Human must be able to really win and take advantage of the graces bestowed on Galungan. “On Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, we ask salvation, prosperity and protection from hazardous things to Motherland,” he said. Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan also poses an expression of gratitude to deities because we have been able to carry out the teachings during the Galungan feast day well. “Since then, human beings have been mature to
bring themselves, not tied to adharma. They are considered to have possessed good thoughts, words and deeds so that they are ready to live their life well according to the teachings of dharma,” he asserted. After that, explained Prof. Sudiana, people just need to implement the values ??of dharma in everyday life to gain peace and tranquility. During the series of Galungan festivities lasting for one month and seven days, people are encouraged to control themselves in order to live together and can perform services, dedication and quality improvement of human resources. Used for drinking water, Subak Tampuagan faces water crisis
Philippine crisis deepens as air strike on rebels kills 11 soldiers
BANGLI — Subak Tampuagan at Peninjoan village, Tembuku, faces an irrigation water crisis. It happens because the water is taken advantage by a number of groups including the municipality waterworks (PDAM Bangli) to be made into drinking water. In addition, the crisis is also aggravated by condition of the irrigation network (tertiary channel) destroyed by crabs. As a result, much water seeps into lower region (river). This was recognized by Tabunan sub-group leader, Jero Mangku Setiani, on Tuesday (May 30). Setiani said that indeed Subak Tampuagan is currently facing water crisis to irrigate their paddy fields. It is caused by the sources of springs at some points (upstream) are used by Bangli municipality waterworks for drinking water. In addition, the taking of water by some groups and irrigation channel damaged by crabs has aggravated the water crisis. “In general, these make the subak sub-group face water crisis. The most severe crisis is experienced by subgroups in the downstream,” said Setiani. Jero Setiani said that at the subak Tampuagan there are many crabs roaming around the paddy fields. They also disrupt paddy plants. In keeping with the growing population, the damage to the irrigation channel is also quite severe, causing much water to seep into lower areas to the river. “The crabs are plentiful and make their house in the tertiary channel, so that the water drains leak and water seeps down,” he admitted. He said that previously it had received assistance to repair the irrigation channel, but it only covered a small part considering the tertiary channel is very long. From the upstream to downstream averagely reaches two kilometers. “Government plans to give an improvement this year for gutter 1 along 1,500 meters, gutter 2 along 240 meters and gutter 3 along 240 meters. Hopefully, the assistance could be worked on immediately,” he said. In the meantime, a farmer at Tabunan sub-group, I Wayan Karpa, admitted that he has difficulty to plant rice due to water crisis within the past two years. He and other farmers are also difficult to grow rice. “Tabunan sub-group spreading across 23 hectares of land cannot plant rice because of the water crisis, not to mention the other subgroups. Here, we have five sub-groups. This condition forces me to buy rice. Now, I plant this land with crops,” said Wayan Karpa. (kmb41)

hazards that will be caused, the BNN and ministry of health have been studying the new synthetic narcotic since 2016. Currently, the flakka has been regulated with the Minister of Health Decree No.2/2017 with chemical name of alpha PVP. “Until now, there has not been any indication if the flakka has entered Bali. Nevertheless, it should be always alerted. In short, any kinds of drug should be rejected and never lured by any persuasion,” he said. In its development, Suastawa asserted that it contains active substances that can threaten and must be aware of is the fentanyl derivative. Flakka has a potential of 10,000 times stronger than morphine or 100 times stronger than heroin. This substance has been studied on May 15-16, 2017 and has been submitted to the ministry
of health to be included into the first group in the appendix to the Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. In the meantime, the anticipative measures undertaken by the BNNP Bali this time is persistent dissemination on the hazards of flakka considering that it has not yet been found in Bali. TOKYO - Japan’s navy and air force began a three-day military exercise with two U.S. aircraft carriers in the Sea of Japan on Thursday adding pressure on North Korea to halt an accelerating ballistic missile programme. Japan’s Maritime Self Defence Force has sent two ships, including one of its four helicopter carriers, the Hyuga, to join the U.S carriers, the USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson, and their eight escort ships, Japan’s military said in a release. Japanese Air Self Defence Force F-15s are taking part in simulated combat with U.S. Navy F-18 fighters at the same time, the military said. “It’s the first time we have exercised with two carriers. It’s a major exercise for us,” a Japanese military spokesman said. The Sea of Japan separates Ja-

MARAWI - An air strike on Islamist rebel holed up in a southern Philippine city has killed 11 government troops, the armed forces said on Thursday, in a major blow to the country’s bid to end its biggest internal security crisis in years. The bombing accident happened on Wednesday when one of two planes bombing rebel positions missed its target in the heart of Marawi City, where ground troops have been battling pro-Islamic State militants holed-up in buildings for nine days. The incident came during what was the first offensive deployment of fixed-wing aircraft in the nine-day operation, aimed at flushing out the Islamist gunmen who have defied expectations by clinging on through days of ground assaults and helicopter rocket attacks. “Sometimes in the fog of war a lot of things could happen. Accidents happen, like this,” Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told a news conference. “It’s very sad to be hitting our own troops,” he added. “There must be a mistake somewhere, either someone directing from the ground, or the pilot.” The Maute group has been a fierce enemy of a military with superior firepower and greater troop strength. The government is concerned that the group’s brazen attack and its resilience could strike a chord with the Islamic State leadership in the Middle East and win its endorsement as its Southeast Asian affiliate. The deaths of the soldiers takes the number of security force members killed to 38, with 19 civilians and 120 rebel fighters killed in the battles in Marawi over the nine days. Lorenzana said militants who were Saudi, Malaysian, Indonesian, Yemeni and Chechen were among eight foreigners killed in the fighting, in what experts say is a sign the Philippines may have a major problem on its hands. An exodus of residents from mainly Muslim Marawi started on May 23, when the Maute rebels ran amok, torching and seizing buildings, stealing police weapons and vehicles, taking hostages, and freeing jailed rebels to rejoin their fight. Thieves break in villa in Ubud, hundreds of millions vanish
GIANYAR — Theft action is increasingly prevalent in Gianyar region. The latest one is the thieves breaking in the villa located on Jalan Tirta Tawar, Kutuh hamlet, Petulu, Ubud, on Monday (May 29). Due to this incident, the victim of a foreign citizen, Florie Gabriele Simone Valensia, lost a number of valuables with a total value of IDR 333 million. As information compiled, when the victim came home from traveling on Monday afternoon around 14:30, she found the window open. When checked inside, the room looked messy. Inevitably, this foreign citizen familiarly addressed as Florie was surprised to find that all the valuables stored in the room were gone. The missing items are two units of Apple MacBook, one iPad, one hand phone, one gold bracelet, one gold necklace, deposit, account book and cash worth IDR 4 million. Total value of all the victim’s losses
is estimated to reach IDR 333 million. The theft was then reported to Ubud police station. Chief of Ubud Police, Nyoman Wirajaya, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. Based on the crime scene investigation, the theft is alleged to take action by damaging window. “We found traces of wreck on the window so there is possibility if the perpetrator acted by prying window,” he said. His authority is now trying to conduct an investigation through raid against migrants to a number of project workers working around the location. However, so far these efforts have not succeeded. “There are no suspicious movements or project workers suddenly moving or others. Besides, at the location of the theft there are no CCTVs. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses are not aware of the theft action,” he concluded. (kmb35)

HONG KONG — A luxury Hermes handbag shattered the world auction record in Hong Kong on Wednesday, fetching an eyepopping $380,000, Christie’s said. The auction house didn’t identify the buyer of the matte white “Himalaya” crocodile skin Hermes Birkin bag. The handbag was produced in 2014 and has 18 karat gold buckles and strap loops encrusted with 205 diamonds. It fetched 2.94 million Hong Kong dollars ($380,000), which Christie’s says is a record for any handbag sold at auction. The price flew past the presale estimate of HK 1.5 million-2 million ($193,000$258,000) during 10 to 15 minutes of intense bidding in the auction room and from phone and online buyers, Christie’s spokeswoman

After years of putting together performances that feature talented artists from Bali and other parts of Indonesia in her Bali Onstage shows, Jane decided to create a space where the wealth of Indonesian performing arts could expand into contemporary creations. Saraswati Pavillion, in Canggu takes the form of a traditional Javanese ‘gazebo’ and served as the setting for the staging of Jane Chen’s annual Puja Mask Dance last Friday night. The mask she wears in this dance depicts Sekartaji, a character from the ancient Javanese Panji stories. Jakarta native Jane Chen has been living in Bali for over 30 years and has been performing her Puja Mask Dance once a year since 2003, The essence of this dance is praise and although Jane brings a different aspect of herself to it every year, she always performs it as an offering, to Bali, to her masters, to those who have come before us, to nature, to Creator. This year, Jane dedicated her dance to her teacher the late Roejito from whom she received the essence of
stage presence. The dance, she explained is “a tribute to all those who have touched our lives, to all teachers and masters, to mother nature to our Great Creator and tonite’s Puja Mask Dance is also dedicated to a true artist of life, who touched the lives of many in Bali and inspired many people around the world: the beloved Linda Garland who passed away earlier this year”, explained Jane. The evenings performances also included a new choreography by Jane Chen, performed by Sefi, entitled ‘The Alphabet of Scent’ in which essential oil scents were an integral part. The dance performed was the first of many to follow and part of a series of four dances called ‘the Alphabet Series’ that Jane has been performing and elaborating on for some years. The honouring of the endless cycles of birth, death and rebirth was poignantly expressed in an evening that paid homage to the beauty developed over millennial by the people of Indonesia as expressed through their descendants: Jane Chen, dancers Sefi and 8 year old daughter Vio, musicians Barok, Safril and Ajat Lesmana along with light and sound engineer Jonas Sestakresna. Their musical, olfactory and somatic expressions were distinctly contemporary but at the same time clearly rooted in the traditions of this great archipelago that have inspired so many people from all over the world and that came together in a way that gave hope for a better future to all who were present. Maintain Pancasila through diversity and plurality
The concept of Pancasila with the coat of arms, namely Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, has been applied by the government of Badung from time immemorial. This understanding is realized by maintaining tolerance among religious followers. As evidence, it is realized in the Puja Mandala located at Benoa village, South Kuta. It is very clearly illustrated where a number of places of worship are established in a single complex. The Hindus, Christians, Moslems and Buddhists pray side by side and this indicates that interfaith harmony in Badung district remains to be well established.
This was stated by Deputy Regent of Badung, I Ketut Suiasa, on Tuesday (May 30). The birth of Pancasila reminds all elements of the nation that Indonesia is a unitary state consisting of various tribes, cultures and religions. “Although we are different by tribe, race and religion, we still respect each other in order to maintain the unity of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia. NCCTRC Australia trains Bali disaster relief team DENPASAR - Bali regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) in cooperation with the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Center (NCCTRC) of Australia held a Major Incident and Medical Management Support (MIMMS) training for medical team in Bali and the BPBD Bali on Tuesday (May 30). The training was held for three days on May 29-31. NCCTRC Coordinator, Di Brown Faculty, said the purpose of the activity is to make the disaster management team in Bali better prepared when handling disaster. Therefore, this activity is not only followed by the BPBD but also firefighter and other related agencies.
“It does not necessarily mean they are incompetent. It poses a regular training activity conducted in Australia. According to him, it is good to be done in Bali,” he said. Other than in Bali, similar training is also conducted in New Zealand, South Pacific, Cambodia, et cetera. This training is also conducted in those countries not because many Australians there but it indeed happens because there has been good relation established between Australia and the countries including Indonesia. Head of the BPBD Bali, Dewa Made Indra, said that such simulation is the application of the theory having been obtained in
classroom. The theory of victim handling is not only made individually, but also by system both in bomb incident, plane crash or disaster. The handling of these incidents should be carried out by a well-integrated team, from field team identifying victims, sorting out emergency casualties to ambulance management and targeted health facilities. “Registration must be done well to the handling at hospital,” he said. The training was followed by 25 people from the agencies definitely getting involved in case there is an incident. They are Sanglah Hospital, hospital in the neighborhood of Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung,
Gianyar and Tabanan), Bali Police Hospital, Bali Police DVI team, military regional health, Red Cross of Indonesia, fire brigade, BPBD and harbor health. Additionally, there is also a team from Australia amounting to 13 people. LOS ANGELES - Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Katy Perry will headline a star-studded concert in Manchester, England, on Sunday to benefit victims of the suicide bombing at Grande’s May 22 concert there, organizers announced on Tuesday.
American artists Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams and Usher will also perform at the June 4 concert, along with Britain’s Coldplay, One Direction singer Niall Horan and the Manchester-based band Take That. The benefit will take place at the Old Trafford cricket ground. Proceeds will benefit victims of last week’s suicide bombing at Grande’s show at another venue in the northern English city, the Manchester Arena. Islamic State claimed credit for the bombing, which killed 22 people and took place moments after Grande finished playing. All proceeds from Sunday’s “One Love Manchester” concert will go to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund which was set up by the Manchester City Council in partnership with the British Red Cross. The fund has already raised more than 5 million pounds ($6.4 million), organizers say. Grande, 23, is offering free tickets to the charity concert to all of those who were at her Manchester show on May 22. The suicide bombing injured more than 100, many of them members of Grande’s large, young female fan base.
