LOS ANGELES - Actress Ashley Judd, one of the first women to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, sued the disgraced mogul Monday, alleging he defamed her after she rejected him.

The complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court in Santa Monica, accuses Weinstein of ruining her chance to be cast in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy by making false statements to director Peter Jackson that he’d had a bad experience with Judd, calling her a “nightmare.” “With those baseless smears, Weinstein succeeded in blacklisting Ms Judd and destroying her ability to work on what became a multibillion-dollar franchise with 17 Academy Award wins and many more nominations,” the suit states. The document goes on to describe the “pathetic reality” that Weinstein was retaliating after Judd, 50, rejected his sexual ad-
vances a year earlier, when he allegedly cornered her in a hotel room under the guise of discussing business. “A self-described ‘benevolent dictator’ who has bragged that ‘I can be scary,’ Weinstein used his power in the entertainment industry to damage Ms Judd’s reputation and limit her ability to find work,” it says. Judd said in a prepared statement that any damages she wins will go to the Time’s Up legal fund, “so that women and men in all professions may have legal redress for sexual harassment, economic retaliation and damage to their careers.” Weinstein has previously denied having any input into casting decisions involving “Lord of the Rings,”
which began pre-production work under the Miramax studio but later moved to New Line Cinema. Oscar-winning Jackson worked with Weinstein and his brother Bob early in the development of “The Lord of the Rings,” and has said the pair acted like “second-rate Mafia bullies.” The New Zealand director said he had no direct knowledge of sexual misconduct allegations against Weinstein, but that the producer pressured him not to hire Judd or Mira Sorvino. “I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998,” Jackson was quoted as telling Fairfax New Zealand. (afp)
‘Avengers’ assemble -- atop the box office
LOS ANGELES - It was a record-breaking weekend for the North American box office as “Avengers: Infinity War” steamrolled the competition with heroic takings of $257.7 million, industry data showed Monday. “Avengers,” the latest Marvel heavy-hitter after the breakout success of “Black Panther,” sees a string of superheroes pitch in to save the universe from powerful purple alien Thanos (Josh Brolin). Returning to their Marvel roles are Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Captain America, Black Panther, the Hulk, SpiderMan and Hawkeye are also back for more, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy and assorted allies. Globally, “Avengers” -- the third
film in the “Avengers” saga and the 19th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- also broke records, clinching the highest worldwide opening of all time with a dizzying $641 million. At US and Canadian box offices, sci-fi horror “A Quiet Place” came in second -- but posed no threat whatsoever to the “Avengers” victory -- earning $11 million in its fourth weekend. That brings total takings to $148.5 million for Paramount’s near-wordless production, which stars actor-director John Krasinski and real-life wife Emily Blunt as a couple silently struggling to protect their family from blind aliens that track their prey by sound. Third place, with $8.2 million, went to “I Feel Pretty,” a comedy starring Amy Schumer as a selfconscious woman who suffers a
head injury and subsequently sees herself as beautiful. Last week’s number two, “Rampage” -- loosely based on a video game series of the same name -- dropped into fourth place, earning $7.2 million for a total of $78 million in three weeks. The film follows Dwayne Johnson as a primatologist who befriends an albino gorilla that grows enormous after a rogue experiment, and later teams up with Johnson against invading monsters. Fifth place saw a resurgence of “Black Panther,” up from eighth place last week. In its 11th weekend in theaters, the superhero smash starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, king of the African utopia of Wakanda, added $4.7 million -- bringing its domestic total to a stunning $688.4 million. Well paid and in high demand, it would appear that engineers in Silicon Valley have scant reason to join forces in labor unions. And yet there are signs that interest is on the rise. Engineer Bjorn Westergard and a dozen colleagues were fired early this year by Lanetix. The startup specializing in professional software cited economic reasons for the staffing cut.

But axed employees suspect their effort to create a worker union was a factor in the move. The dismissals came a few days after an application join with the Communications Workers of America was sent, Westergard told AFP. “I think it is the first time that software engineers in a software company have filed (to unionize),” Westergard said “It’s not hard to find a job, and it pays relatively good so there is the idea that if you have any problem at all you just leave and get another job.” Some 10.7 percent of US workers are unionized, according to a January report by the Labor Department, about half the percentage
from 1983. The highest levels are in public-sector jobs, including teachers and firefighters. The report found just 1.7 percent of “professional and technical services” workers in the private sector are union members. Silicon Valley talent is notorious for flitting from one well-paying job to another, with high turnover in workplaces weakening the potential for worker solidarity. Westergard contended that colleagues in the industry are giving increasing weight to the option of staying put and fixing what they see as problems in workplaces instead of quitting. It’s not that engineers are anti-union, Westergard
maintained, “they just don’t know anything about organized labor.” - Libertarian outlook Tech companies, on the other hand, have long been cool to the idea of unions. Internet titans like Facebook and Google are known for pampering engineers: high salaries, stock grants, comprehensive health insurance, unlimited meals, bicycles, dance classes, special commuter buses, limitless espresso and more in offices with the feel of playful college campuses. It would seem daunting for engineers on picket lines to win public support. Silicon Valley employers are said to have a “libertarian”
mindset that deems unions a brake on freewheeling progress, with the viewpoint conveniently playing into their business interests, according to David Judd of the Tech Workers Coalition. The organization describes itself as “ a coalition of tech industry workers, labor organizers, community organizers, and friends cultivating solidarity among all workers in tech.” According to Time magazine article in 2014, retail colossus Amazon has taken pains to prevent even warehouse workers from unionizing, advocating a “direct relationship” between management and employees. For the Tech Workers Coalition, the interest of Lanetix employees in a union was a sign of growing awareness in the technology sector that they are very much a part of the rest of society and their creations

are touching the lives of most people. Lanetix did not respond to a request for comment. “There is a lot of activity among workers who are working for websites and digital media and trying to organize,” author and union specialist David Bacon told AFP. “It is partly a product of the insecurity in this industry,” he added, noting that if a startup fails, employees rewarded with shares for countless hours of labor can wind up with nothing.
