LOS ANGELES - Although people only saw glimpses of Beyoncé this past weekend at Oscar parties, it looks like the singer had a blast in between events, according to recent photos shared on her official website.

On Tuesday the singer, who is pregnant with twins, posted several snapshots of private moments to her official site, which included moments of her cradling her growing baby bump.

The pictures are a part of her “Oscar Weekend 2017” photo album and shows off the “Formation” singer’s party look. In one photo, Beyoncé is pictured in a green dress staring at the camera as she caresses her belly.

In another photo, the Grammy Award winner is standing sideways showing off her baby bump. Beyoncé’s head is actually cut off in the photo so the main focus of the picture is her stomach and gorgeous accessories, which include gold bracelets with jewels, a multicolor stone necklace and diamond rings.

A different snapshot features the songstress with her hands at her side, showing off the size of her baby bump.

Although she was all about flaunting the new additions to her family, Beyoncé also shared a few couple shots with her husband Jay Z. In a black-and-white photo, the parents of Blue Ivy Carter are featured sitting close to one another and looking forward, perhaps laughing at something that is taking place on a stage nearby. LOS ANGELES - An accountant for the Academy Awards botched the meticulous procedure for announcing the Oscar for best picture when he handed victory to “La La Land” before declaring “Moonlight” the real winner, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said.

Accountant Brian Cullinan, who media reports said had been tweeting backstage shortly before, gave presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope for the movie industry’s top award on Sunday, the accounting firm said in a statement. In a gaffe that stunned the Dolby Theatre crowd in Hollywood and a television audience worldwide, “Cullinan mistakenly handed the back-up envelope for Actress in a Leading Role instead of the envelope for Best Picture” to Beatty and Dunaway, PwC said.

“Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough

by Mr. Cullinan or his partner.” The Wall Street Journal and celebrity website TMZ.com reported that Cullinan had posted a backstage photo of actress Emma Stone on social network Twitter minutes before the mix-up.

The photo, from Cullinan’s Twitter account, was later deleted but was still viewable on Monday on a cached archive of the page.

Cullinan could not immediately be reached for comment. The mistake was not rectified until the “La La Land” cast and producers were on stage giving their acceptance speeches. It was left to the musical’s producer, Jordan Horowitz,

to put things right.

“Guys, guys, I’m sorry. No. There’s a mistake,” Horowitz said. “’Moonlight,’ you guys won best picture. This is not a joke.”

It took three hours for PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has been overseeing Academy Awards balloting for 83 years, initially to confirm that Beatty and Dunaway received the wrong category envelope. PwC said it took full responsibility and apologized to the casts and crews of “La La Land” and “Moonlight.”

“We sincerely apologize to Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, (host) Jimmy Kimmel, (broadcaster) ABC, and the Academy, none of whom was at fault for last night’s errors,” it said in its statement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, also apologized for the mishap and said

it was committed to upholding the integrity of the Oscars.

“We have spent last night and today investigating the circumstances, and will determine what actions are appropriate going forward,” it said in a statement.

An embarrassed Beatty carried the envelope to the glitzy Governor’s Ball after the show, with the writing clearly saying “actress in a leading role.” “La La Land” star Stone had been awarded that Oscar moments before.

“Except for the end, it was fun,” Kimmel said on Monday, referring to the Oscar show he hosted. “You know it’s a strange night when the word ‘envelope’ is trending on Twitter,” he said on his ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Ida Pedanda Sebali Tianyar passes away

DENPASAR - Ida Pedanda Gede Ketut Sebali Tianyar Arimbawa passed away at 06:00 on Monday (Feb. 27). This third President of the World Hindu Parishad died at the age of 73. His body is laid down at the funeral home on Jalan Cargo. Procession of the body bathing ritual was carried out at 16:00 on the same day (Monday—Ed).

On Tuesday (Feb. 28) at 07.00, he is cremated at the Mumbul crematorium, while his bone is taken to Griya Tegeh, Karangasem. This was conveyed by family representative, I.B. Jendra, in front of the Burn Unit ICU of Sanglah Hospital. “From tomorrow, it will be held the twelve-day ritual procession at Griya Tegeh, Karangasem,” he added.

This is undertaken because it follows the previous tradition

of spiritual teachers (nabe) either they are male or female.

Moreover, Ida Pedanda also advised that he should be treated with simple ceremony considering that he is a religious figure so that all parties can do devotional works for him.

On Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 28) is implemented the macemana ceremony. On March 1-10 will be resumed with the narpana and homa ceremony. On March 10, it will be held the pelebon ceremony and washing away to the sea at 24.00.

After that, at 07:00 on March 11 is carried out the mepandes (toot filing) and maligia ceremony. At 24.00 on the same day becomes the culmination of the maligia ritual.

He has been treating at Sanglah Hospital since January 7.

Previously, he had been treated at BaliMed Hospital Karangasem since January 1. After that, he was allowed to go home.

“He had been sent to hospital again and again,” he said.

On Sunday morning (Feb. 27) was hospitalized again at

Sanglah Hospital ICU. Actually, at noon his condition was declared to have been stable. Then, at that night his condition dropped. The news on his death did not only reach his big family, but also his students.

He had a history of complications from diabetes, heart and kidney failure of stadium 5. Ida Pedanda Gede Ketut Sebali Tianyar was named the President of the World Hindu Parishad. He has been served as higher priest for 32 years after his twice-born initiation (dwijati) on April 3, 1985.

Many positions have ever been occupied, especially in the spiritual organization.

In addition to one of the founders of the Poshana Vedic Ashram, he was also a former Chairman of the Dharma Adhyaksa of the Central PHDI for two periods and the latest position is the President of the World Hindu Parishad. (kmb42)

Tourist accommodation must have security management systems

MANGUPURA - In response to the increase in crimes and issues related to possible terrorist attacks on hotels in Indonesia – including Badung, the local tourism office is requiring every tourist accommodation apply safety standards that are being referred to as security system management (SMP).

Such endeavours are aimed at

providing protection to visitors who frequent accommodations, and restaurants by having these premises remain secure. “We encourage the participation of entrepreneurs and restaurateurs in creating security and comfort for travelers” said the Head of the Badung Tourism Office, Cokorda Raka Darmawan, on Tuesday

(Feb. 28).

The government of Badung, through its tourism office, has disseminated information about tourism facilitity safety standards in Badung. Hotel security systems, said Cok Darmawan, are required by regulations governing such matters.

“This is intended to provide

security and comfort for visitors as well as employess of such businesse premises”, he said.

According Cok Darmawan, security measures should be integrated into the habits of management and other employees for the sake of common security and comfort. He therefore hopes that all businesse in the tourism industry

will comply with the regulations pertaining to their businesses, including certificates, permits and security management systems.

Obese couples may take longer to conceive

MARYLAND - Couples who are obese may take longer to achieve pregnancy than partners who aren’t as overweight, a recent U.S. study suggests.

Previous studies in women have linked obesity to difficulties getting pregnant. In the current study, neither male nor female obesity alone was linked to taking a longer time to conceive, but when both partners were obese, the couple took up to 59 percent longer to conceive than non-obese counterparts.

“If our results are confirmed, fertility specialists may want to take couples’ weight status into account when counseling them

about achieving pregnancy,” said lead study author Rajeshwari Sundaram of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Maryland.

“The benefits of a healthy weight are well known: obesity increases the risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer,” Sundaram added by email.

Sundaram and colleagues focused on the relationship between pregnancy and body mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight, while 25 to 29.9 is overweight, 30 or above is obese and 40 or higher is what’s known as morbidly obese. (The National Heart,

An adult who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds, for example, would have a BMI of 23.6, which is in the healthy range. An obese adult at that height would weigh at least 203 pounds and have a BMI of 30 or more.

Researchers categorized individuals into two subgroups: obese class I, with a BMI from 30 to 34.9, and obese class II, with a BMI of 35 or greater.

Overall, 27 percent of the women and 41 percent of the men were obese class I or heavier.

Then, the researchers compared the average time to conceive for couples where neither partner was obese to couples where both fell into the obese class II group.

Couples in the obese class II group took 55 percent longer to achieve pregnancy than their normal weight counterparts, the study team calculated.

After accounting for other factors that influence fertility such as age, smoking status, exercise and cholesterol levels, obese class II couples took 59 percent longer to get pregnant.

About 40 percent of the men and 47 percent of the women also had enough excess fat around the midsection to potentially influence fertility.

In addition, 60 percent of the women and 58 percent of the men said they exercised no more than once a week, the researchers report in Human Reproduction.

Beyond its small size, another limitation of the study is that it wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to determine whether obesity directly causes infertility, the authors note. It also focused on couples in the general population, not people undergoing treatment for infertility, so the results might not reflect what would happen for all couples trying to conceive, the researchers point out.

However, unlike many other studies of obesity and fertility, the current analysis used height and weight measured by clinicians instead of relying on participants to report this information themselves, which may make the findings more accurate.

Obesity can influence fertility by altering hormone levels in both men and women, converting testosterone to estrogen, said Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg, section head of reproductive endocrinology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

“If you have more fat there is more conversion from testosterone to estrogen,” Goldberg, who wasn’t involved in the study, said.

It makes sense that obese couples would take longer to conceive because excess weight doesn’t just impact fertility in women. (rtr)

“Surgeons should discuss overlapping surgery with patients beforehand and obtain their consent if this is part of their practice,” said lead study author Dr. Michael Kent of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Generally, people understand the pros and cons of the practice once they know what it is, Kent added by email.

“Respondents understood that overlapping surgery allows surgeons to potentially perform more operations in a given day, so patients may not need to wait as long for their procedure,” Kent said. “They also un-

derstand that complications may occur when a surgeon’s attention is divided, and this may have an impact on patient safety.”

For the study, Kent and colleagues surveyed participants about their knowledge of overlapping surgery, their expectations regarding disclosure during the informed consent process and their willingness to have this type of surgery as a patient.

Half of the participants were at least 33 years old, and they ranged in age from 21 to 74.

During the survey, researchers randomly selected one of three scenarios to illustrate what happens during overlapping surgery: a hip replacement, a procedure to remove a brain tumor or a heart valve replacement.

All three scenarios offered similar descriptions of the roles filled by senior surgeons

and assistants.

Overall, about 92 percent of respondents thought surgeons should document what portion of the operations they were present for, researchers report in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

When asked specifically about assistants or trainees, 86 percent of participants thought patients should be told prior to surgery who would be in the operating room and 84 percent thought the precise role of trainees should be disclosed.

After overlapping surgery was described, about 70 percent of participants thought the practice might be acceptable in certain circumstances, such as lowerrisk procedures or in situations when an emergency occurred in another operating room. (rtr)

Rabies still alarming in Jembrana

NEGARA - Until now, rabies is still worrying and becoming one of the zoonoses (diseases or infection transmitted from animals to humans) that becomes the attention in the Jembrana region.

Division Head of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health, Jembrana Agriculture and Food Agency, AAN Mahadikara, accompanied by the Section Head of Observer and Investigation, I Wayan Widarsa, said on Tuesday (Feb. 28) that one of the three positive bite cases occurred at Sari Kuning Tulungagung hamlet, Tukadaya, Melaya, afflicted to the dog owner I Ketut Wedan on Monday (Feb. 6).

At Palungan Batu hamlet, Batuagung, Jembrana, the bite case occurred on Wednesday (Feb. 15) to 12 people including the owner, Dewa Komang Sugianyar. At Pangkung Jelati, Yeh Sumbul village, Mendoyo, the dog bite occurred on Friday (Feb. 17) afflicting to the owner, I Wayan Gendra. They are all caused by puppies aged between one month and three months.

He said the latest bite case having been dealt with occurred on Monday (Feb. 27) namely by a two-month-old puppy belonging to I Ketut Sudarsana from East Arum hamlet, Gilimanuk, biting the face of his daughter, Ni Kadek Jualita Apsari, 4.

Of the positive rabies cases that have occurred since 2015, they are predominantly caused by puppies. So far, of a number of rabies carrier animals other than dogs either by cats or monkeys whose samples have been sent to veterinary laboratory in Denpasar are declared to be negative to rabies.

During last February, there were four cases of dog bites and they were spread in three subdistricts namely Melaya, Jembrana and Mendoyo with the bitten victim amounting to 15 people.

BOSTON - Most people aren’t aware that surgeons are sometimes involved in multiple operations happening at the same time, and many patients might object to the practice if they knew about it, a recent U.S. study suggests.

Researchers focused on what’s known as overlapping surgery, when a senior surgeon performs critical components of one operation at the same that a trainee surgeon or physician assistant handles a non-critical portion of another procedure. For example, it might mean the assistant closes up an incision on one patient while a senior surgeon begins an operation on another patient.

Only about 4 percent of the 1,454 people surveyed for the study had heard of overlapping surgery, the study found. Just 31 percent of them strongly supported the practice once it was explained, and nearly all of

“We need to remind that KUPVA BB industry is very susceptible to be used as a means in various modes of crimes such as money laundering and financing of terrorism acts,” he said.

On that account, the KUPVA BB companies should always apply Customer Due Diligence (CDD) and Enhanced Due Dili-

gence (EDD) in every transaction.

One of them is by recording the identity of customers, delivering Cash Financial Transaction Reports (CFTR) and Suspicious Financial Transactions (SFT) correctly and accurately to the Center for Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis (PPATK).

With the understanding and application of the CDD and EDD in daily activities, the KUPVA BB companies are expected to take active role and participate in preventing and combating money laundering and terrorism act financing.

“Therefore, I particularly welcome the dissemination of the provisions considering that in practice it is required a good understanding by the KUPVA BB companies,” he affirmed in the dissemination of the latest provisions of the KUPVA BB on Tuesday (Feb. 28) at the Graha Tirta Gangga. (kmb42)

Australia calls ambassadors home to reshape foreign policy, trade

Then, water for cooking purposes, residents rely on the clean water supply from the regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) and B angli Social Services.

Chief of Bantang hamlet, Nyoman Sukada, when contacted on Tuesday (Feb. 28) said the landslide disaster occurred on Friday (Feb. 10) damaged the water pipelines

in the region. The water pipelines belonging to the village posing the assistance of central government leaked due to get eroded and buried by landslides. The damages to

pipeline have caused hundreds of people at the village to face water shortages since more than two weeks. “Right now, it is still being repaired, including the reservoir is also cleaned up from mud and debris,” he explained.

Sukada said that since the damage to the pipelines people are forced to fetch clean water to the springs in the field. The water taken from these sources is just usually used for bathing and washing. As for cooking purposes, they rely on the clean water supply from the

BPBD every two or three days. “To make the water enough for all the residents, we do an allocation. Each family gets around four buckets,” he said.

In truth, he hoped the clean water can be supplied by the BPBD and Social Service every day. Considering that other villages also face water shortages, people at this village could only get the supply of clean water every 2-3 days. “We thank to relevant agencies that have already lent a hand. Our village apparatus are

still doing repairs. Hopefully, the water should have run next week,” he hoped.

In the meantime, the Section Head of Emergency and Logistics of the BPBD Bangli, Ketut Agus Sutapa, when confirmed separately admitted that since the clean water pipelines at Bantang hamlet was broken, his agency has continued to supply clean water for the residents at local hamlet. Clean water is usually supplied every 2-3 days where one supply can usually send 3 to 5 tanks of clean water. (kmb40)

It is the first time Australia has brought together all of its top diplomats from their 113 missions around the world. The aim is to draw up a “white paper” to guide Australian diplomacy for the next decade, the first document of its kind since 2003.

The ambassadors will meet in Canberra for two days with Turnbull, Bishop, and Trade Minister Steven Ciobo, with the white paper scheduled to be delivered around the middle of the year.

Alexandra Oliver, lead researcher on Australia’s white paper at Sydney-based think tank the Lowy Institute, said a global political shift had challenged traditional foreign policy-making.

“Concerns about immigration, about terrorism, about globalisation, about global free trade - all of those assumptions that we have held to be for the common global good are in question now,” Oliver said.

“It would be foolish to say it is just the Trump presidency that’s caused this, these are broader social movements that are evident in developments like Brexit and in the way that Europe appears to be fracturing at the edges, if not at the centre,” she said. (rtr)

GIANYAR - Gianyar municipal police conducted a raid to tourist accommodation at Taman neighborhood, Ubud, on Tuesday (Feb. 28). Led by the Chief of Gianyar Municipal Police, Cokorda Gde Agusnawa, it targeted six illegal villa buildings. The six accommodations were found to have no permits so that the officers directly issued first reprimand for them.

Finally, a number of villas in the Taman neighborhood are found illegal. “The information on the illegal accommodation is also known from the community. With local hamlet chief, the officers inspected the location on Tuesday around 10:00. Well, having been checked some of the accommodations are indeed newly built, but some others have been operated without applying for a permit. “Indeed, these are newly built, while some others have been occupied by guests. When asked about their permit, they are not able to present it,” he explained.

He said that such condition was found at other villas at Taman neighborhood, so that there are totally six illegal villas at the location. Seeing this, the Gianyar Municipal Police immediately issued the first reprimand letter. “We’ve issued the first reprimand. We will give time for a week. If they do not respond, we will immediately issue the second reprimand letter,” he said.

Cokorda Agusnawa affirmed

that his agency would not stop at Taman hamlet. On Wednesday, the Gianyar Municipal Police are scheduled to take further action against illegal tourist accommodations in Gianyar. “Obviously, we are now aggressively taking action. We will also come down again tomorrow (Mar. 01—Ed).

to court handcuffed. As they left, they were made to wear bulletproof vests, reflecting Malaysian authorities’ fears that others involved in the killing could want the women silenced.

No plea was recorded after the charges were read out.

But Aishah and Huong have told diplomats who visited them in custody that they were unwitting pawns in an assassination that U.S. officials and South Korean intelligence have said was organised by North Korean agents.

Huong’s lawyer told reporters outside the court that his client had told him she was innocent.

“She denied. She denied. She said ‘I’m innocent’,” Selvam Shanmugam said.

“Of course, she’s definitely distressed because she is facing death penalty,” he added.

The next court date will be April 13, when prosecutors will apply for the accused to be tried jointly.

Kim Jong Nam, who had criticised the regime of his family and his half-brother Kim Jong Un, died after the two women allegedly smeared VX nerve agent, a chemi-

cal described by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction, across his face.

He had been preparing to catch a flight to Macau, the Chinese territory where he had been living under Beijing’s protection since going into exile several years ago.

According to the charges, the women and four unnamed people, who are still at large, were in the airport departure lounge with the intention of murdering the North Korean citizen.

One North Korean man, identified by police as Ri Jong Chol, is still in police custody and has not been charged. Police have identified seven other North Koreans wanted in connection with the case, including an embassy official in Kuala Lumpur.

Amid a bitter diplomatic row, members of Malaysia’s cabinet met with a high-level North Korean delegation that arrived on Tuesday to press for the release of the citizen in custody, and for the body to be handed over.

Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam told reporters he was not at that meeting, but a decision

would eventually be made on what to do with the body as no next of kin had come forward for formal identification.

North Korea maintains the victim is a North Korean citizen, but denies he is the half brother of its leader, Kim Jong Un. South Korea’s foreign minister told a U.N. sponsored disarmament conference in Geneva on Tuesday that its unpredictable, nucleararmed neighbour had thousands of tonnes of chemical weapons, including VX. Yun Byung-se called for “collective measures” against North Korea, including possible suspension of its U.N. membership.

North Korea’s envoy to the conference, Ju Yong Choi, rejected the suggestion as “despicable” and said the country has never produced or stockpiled chemical weapons.

The country’s official KCNA news agency later said the claim that VX was used to kill its citizen was “absurd” and lacked scientific basis, calling it an assertion made by the United States and South Korea to tarnish the North’s image. (rtr)

“Ghost Tower” haunts Bangkok 20 years after financial crisis

BANGKOK — The 49story Bangkok high-rise was supposed to feature luxury condos for hundreds of newly affluent Thai families, but it was abandoned unfinished when the Asian financial crisis struck in 1997. Now called the “Ghost Tower,” it’s a monument to mistakes made and an object of curiosity to a steady stream of visitors.

“Sathorn Unique,” named after the up-and-coming neighborhood next to the Chao Phraya river it towers over, draws dozens of foreigners daily who come to gawk at the decrepit, stained concrete edifice. It’s a home not to Thai yuppies, but to bats, birds, weeds, trees and a black-and-white spotted cat, seen prowling one afternoon on a seventh floor balcony.

“The only way is up,” reads graffiti scrawled in chalk on the fifth floor landing, an ironic reminder of the building’s aspirational past.

Near the building’s entrance sits a ramshackle homemade spirit shrine. A yellowing poster of Thailand’s late king, clad in royal regalia, is plastered above ashes of spent incense and opened bottles of fruity Red Fanta — the ghosts’ favorite drink, according to watchman Suwaschai Dadaelor. In the booming 90s, Bangkok’s skyline was surging skyward and studded with construction cranes.

Architect and property developer Rangsan Torsuwan was flush with cash from selling ornate, high-rise condos along the beach in Pattaya.

He drew up blueprints, cleared the land and made millions of dollars pre-selling the condos.

Then came what Thais call the “Tom Yum Goong” crash — referring to the famous local sour and spicy soup. It started in Thailand when the over-leveraged government unexpectedly devalued the baht. Investors rushed to pull their money out as quickly as they could, setting off a regional financial crisis.

About 500 big construction projects — from shopping malls to elevated railways — came to a screeching halt. Some later resumed, but not this one. At 185 meters (607 feet), the structure is

In the Ghost Tower’s heyday, hundreds of tourists flocked daily to the urban ruin, paying a 200-baht ($6) bribe to stumble over piles of bricks and bags of cement to stage photo and YouTube shoots and hold boozy parties on the rooftop. “The photos look so dope,” said Sorcha O’Malley, a tourist from Ireland spotted one afternoon snapping pictures from a side alley. She looks up. “I really want a photo up there, you know?”

“Even when I walking here my heart was kind of pumping already,” German visitor Annikha Mahnke chimes in. “It’s such a big adventure to go up there.”

In April 2015, two 20-something

parkour runners posted videos of themselves on YouTube ducking and weaving through the building, somersaulting off columns and dangling off balconies. Their footage went viral, drawing thrill-seekers and urban explorers.

For Rangsan’s son Pansit, who now is in charge of the building, that was the last straw. He locked up the stairwells. “I only feel worry,” he said. “This is not a complete construction, and it’s very dangerous to let people to go up there.”

A few years ago, a 30-year-old Swedish man, Stig Johan Kristian Hammarsten, hanged himself on the 43rd floor. His rotting corpse was discovered weeks later, cementing the building’s reputation as a “ghost tower.” “Pray to the spirits,” pulsates in neon orange spray paint, in Thai, on the 43rd

floor.

Suwaschai, the guard, said he pays his respects daily to appease the ghosts that haunt him at night.

One peered at him from behind a column, he says, a shadowy, powerfully built laborer with slick black hair wearing nothing but a loincloth. Another grabbed and levitated his body once when he was sick.

A Thai-Taiwanese couple stopped by to take selfies in an elevator shaft, and found other faces in the photos, Suwaschai said, pointing insistently to shadowy figures in a picture’s background.

“This is a true story, I’m not making stuff up.” A famous cinema was razed to make way for Rangsan’s folly, but rumors that it was built on an ancient cemetery have added to its mystique.

The property has been mired in

a complex lawsuit for years and it looks unlikely anyone will demolish it anytime soon. Inspectors say the reinforced concrete structure is still fundamentally sound despite weathering decades of storms. For now it serves as a support for two, 18-story billboards: one advertising Pepsi and the other the iPhone 7.

For Thais, the tower is a reminder of lessons learned. On one recent February afternoon, a crowd gathered on the Ghost Tower’s ground floor for a seminar. The topic: The tower, the financial crisis and the 20 years since. “This building is important because it is a symbol,” said Rames Promyen, director at the National Discovery Museum Institute.

“It serves as a reminder to ourselves — a reminder of how to better prepare for future crises, and how to strengthen ourselves.”(ap)

France’s Fillon cancels appearance, due to make statement

PARIS - French presidential candidate Francois Fillon abruptly cancelled a highprofile campaign appearance on Wednesday and a newspaper reported he had been summoned by magistrates investigating a ‘fake work’ scandal involving his wife.

Fillon was holding talks with senior officials of his party, and there was no confirmation of the report in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

The 62-year-old former prime minister said he would make a statement at noon (1100 GMT). A source close to Alain Juppe, whom Fillon defeated in the contest to be The Republicans’ candidate, said he would appear alongside Fillon.

Fillon’s campaign has been battered for weeks by allegations that he paid his wife Penelope hundreds of thousands of euros of public money to be his parliamentary assistant, but that she actually did very little work. He denies any wrongdoing and says it was a proper job.

Juppe, another former prime minister, has previously ruled out stepping in as the presidential candidate if Fillon, at one point the favourite, was forced to quit the race.

The gap between French and German bond yields briefly tightened to around 66 basis points on Wednesday but market reaction was generally muted as the implications for the two-round April 23 and May 7 election remained unclear.

The investigation of Fillon and his wife has unnerved investors who fear Fillon’s campaign woes have handed the anti-euro, anti-immigration Marine Le Pen of the National Front a higher chance of winning the presidency. Polls suggest, however, that she would lose in the second round to centrist Emmanuel Macron.

A journalist for French investigative web site Mediapart reported that Penelope Fillon was being held for questioning by police, but he later issued a correction, saying this had been denied by a judicial source. (rtr)

Trump softens immigration stance, takes measured tone in speech

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump told Congress on Tuesday he was open to immigration reform, shifting from his harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration in a speech that offered a more restrained tone than his election campaign and first month in the White House.

Trump, in a prime-time address to a country that remains divided over his leadership, set aside disputes with Democrats and the news media to deliver his most presidential performance to date, seeking to regain the confidence of Americans rattled by his leadership thus far.

The president’s speech was long on promises but short on specifics on how to achieve a challenging legislative agenda that could add dramatically to budget deficits.

He wants a healthcare overhaul, broad tax cuts and a $1 trillion public-private initiative to rebuild degraded roads and bridges.

Trump built a base of support behind his presidential campaign by vowing to fight illegal immigration. In his speech, he took a more moderate tone, appealing to Republicans and Democrats to work together on immigration reform.

He said it was possible if both Republicans and Democrats in Congress were willing to compromise, although he also said

U.S. immigration should be based on a merit-based system, rather than relying on lower-skilled immigrants.

Saudi king signs range of deals in Indonesia at start of visit

BOGOR, Indonesia - Saudi Arabia’s King Salman held talks with Indonesia’s president on Wednesday and signed a range of cooperation agreements at the beginning of a 12day visit to the world’s largest Muslimmajority country. The royal visit is the first by a Saudi monarch in nearly five decades.

The leaders oversaw, among 11 pacts, the signing of agreements to take down trade barriers and a new agreement between state energy companies Saudi Aramco and Pertamina, building on an existing $6 billion plan to expand Indonesia’s biggest refinery.

The octogenarian king arrived at a military air base in the capital, Jakarta, earlier on Wednesday and descended slowly from the plane on an escalator before being met

by President Joko Widodo who escorted him along a red carpet flanked by guards to

a limousine.

King Salman is being accompanied by an entourage that Indonesian officials have said could number up to 1,500. His party is bringing 459 tons of luggage and equipment, including two luxury cars, according to media. The king was also greeted by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Jakarta’s Christian governor, who is on trial for allegedly insulting the Koran. Purnama has denied wrongdoing but his blasphemy trial has inflamed religious tensions.

The kingdom’s ambassador to Indonesia told Reuters on Tuesday the two countries would cooperate in tackling terrorism and that military officers were training in each other’s countries to counter Islamic State militants.

Secular Indonesia has grown increasingly concerned about security, after several attacks over the past year blamed on supporters of Islamic State, and has deployed at least 9,000

police and military for the 12-day visit.

Roads were closed to traffic and snipers stationed along the route the king’s convoy took from the airport to the presidential palace in the town of Bogor. Hundreds of children holding Indonesian and Saudi flags welcomed the king.

King Salman held talks with Widodo as torrential rain lashed the palace grounds.

He will also meet religious leaders, make a speech at parliament, and visit Southeast Asia’s biggest mosque, Istiqlal, on Thursday before a brief trip to Brunei and then an extended break on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali.

Indonesia hopes to attract billions of dollars of investment from the kingdom, though the trip will also focus on building cultural and religious ties and promoting education.

Saudi Arabia aims to open more Islamic

schools in Indonesia, which will teach religion using the Arabic language, and step up the number of scholarships for students.

The king’s visit to Indonesia comes as fringe Islamist groups grow in influence and Muslim leaders take an increasingly strict line on Islamic issues, which is at odds with Indonesia’s traditional brand of moderate Islam.

“The two countries face the same challenge of rising radicalism and intolerance so cooperation in those areas will be beneficial,” said Yenny Wahid, a moderate Indonesian Muslim figure and head of the Wahid Foundation. “Saudi Arabia has been aggressive in de-radicalization and rehab programs for terrorists. We can learn best practices from each other.”

Although the Kings convoy, on its way to the Bogor Palace, passed at around 1 p.m. local time, the crowds had already gathered along the street despite the afternoon heat not dampening their spirits to welcome King Salman.

“This is an honorable visit to Bogor.

Moreover, King Salman is on a visit to invest in Indonesia, so we should welcome him proudly,” Rizal Rahmat, a high school student from Bogor, remarked.

the monkeys, play open stage to their playful exploits once in a while, the surrounding hilly forests outside the temple complex are where they are truly at home.

The monkeys are known to come out of their forest dwellings and linger around onto the pathways in the afternoon and down to sunset.

It is a rule of thumb to visit the Uluwatu Monkey Forest and the temple grounds with an accompanying local guide who would know his way with the unpredictable monkeys, such as ‘bribing’ them back when they manage to steal your hat or pair of Oakleys. Good advice is to take along a stick for walks through the ‘forests’ just to bluff the monkeys away.

Do not tempt or feed the monkeys as the locals and temple authorities have already provided them with regular snacks, such as slices of cassava. Stalking and snatching for curious items and anything on you – either from below on the ground or from up above in the trees – is common. Therefore, don’t wear interesting items, and park wisely – away from large groups of the racketing ruffians – to save yourself a messy paintjob. Hyperactive ones in the pack have been known to put on a rather disparaging act such as stripping off rubber liners off car windows and bending unlucky license plates. However, the main parking area where restaurants and shops can now be found lined up, which were all established over the last decade, has provided a safe spot to park and start off the adventure as not many of the macaques roam to these areas. Raikkonen was a mere 0.023 faster than triple champion Lewis Hamilton at the end of the day, although the Briton got out at lunchtime and handed his Mercedes to new team mate Valtteri Bottas.

Ferrari’s Finn had been second quickest in the morning, but on slower medium tyres than Hamilton’s supersofts. He set his fastest time on softs in the afternoon.

While Raikkonen ended the day with 108 laps under his belt, the Mercedes pair put in 168 laps between them after an untroubled 152 on Monday.

Hamilton’s 66 were the equivalent of a Spanish Grand Prix race distance.

Reliability more than the lap times is the main focus at this stage of the year with the new-look wider cars, on fatter front and rear tyres and with revamped aerodynamics, unveiled only last week.

Ferrari, who have kept their cards close to their chest with no media activities on the first two days after a low-key online launch,

also showed good reliability on Monday with Sebastian Vettel completing 128 laps.

Raikkonen’s best lap of one minute 20.960 seconds compared to the fastest time in 2016 Barcelona testing of 1:22.765. Red Bull and McLaren, who had a troubled debut day, had mixed fortunes on day two.

Dutch teenager Max Verstappen did 89 laps for Red Bull but Belgian rookie Stoffel Vandoorne managed only 40 in the McLaren and was second slowest. Vandoorne was halted after 29, and partners Honda changed the power unit.

“I think it was positive to get back behind the wheel after four months of no driving,” said former GP2 champion Vandoorne, looking on the bright side.

“It was a good first feeling for me and I immediately felt confident in the car and very comfortable... unfortunately we had a loss of engine power during the morning after a couple of laps, we’re still investigating what the issues are.”

Others also wrestled with garage gremlins. Renault’s Jolyon Palmer managed to do one untimed installation lap in the morning, after the team flew in new parts overnight, but ended the day with 53 done.

“I don’t believe I’ve stood up at an international competition and the rest of the field has been clean,” said Phelps, whose Olympic haul includes 23 gold medals. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt that. I know when I do stand up in the U.S. I know we’re all clean because we go through the same thing.

“Throughout my career I have though that some athletes were cheating and in some cases those suspicions were confirmed.

TURIN — Juventus came from behind to beat Napoli 3-1 with the help of three favorable penalty decisions in a controversial first leg of their Italian Cup semifinal on Tuesday. Napoli had broken the deadlock with a well-worked team goal in the 36th minute. Lorenzo Insigne and Arkadiusz Milik played a rapid one-two and the former crossed into the box for Jose Callejon to volley in at the back post.

But the momentum changed after the break with two contentious penalties awarded to Juventus — and one denied to the visitors. Napoli, which had been in a self-imposed media blackout for more than a week, decided to break its silence after the match.

“We haven’t decided to interrupt our media silence, but it seemed right to us to congratulate the lads, who had a great game,” Napoli’s sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli said. “We lost tonight because of decisions that weren’t just debatable, but were shameful and hurt Italian football.

“The first penalty shouldn’t have been given, and the second was even less of a penalty because (Napoli goalkeeper Pepe) Reina got the ball ... Ours was a penalty. This referee is shameful. Congratulations to the team.”

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly was judged to have tripped Paulo Dybala shortly after halftime and the Argentina forward dusted himself off before firing the resulting spot-kick into the bottom left corner, sending Reina the wrong way.

Juve’s second penalty came five minutes after former Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain had made it 2-1. Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina appeared to get

the ball but also brought down Juan Cuadrado following a swift counterattack. Dybala converted into the same corner.

Napoli’s players were also angered by the referee ignoring their claims for a penalty moments earlier for what appeared to be a foul on Raul Albiol, which led to the counterattack. “The result changed only because of the refereeing decisions,” Reina said. “What should I have done on Cuadrado? Disappear? If I get the ball I get the ball, it’s not a penalty.

“And no one’s talking much about the penalty on Albiol,” the Napoli keeper added. “That was more a penalty than the other... Tonight the result was decided by refereeing mistakes, the whole of Italy saw it.”

Higuain’s goal came shortly after the hour. A corner was played out to Cuadrado and his cross into the box was inadvertently headed to Higuain

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said the club’s owner, Arab billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, wants him to stay in charge of the club beyond his current three-year contract.

Guardiola, who took over at City before the start of the season, won two Champions League, three La Liga and two King’s Cup titles as Barcelona coach. Two domestic doubles followed at Bayern Munich.

The Spaniard met Sheikh Mansour for the first time during City’s recent warm-weather training break in Abu Dhabi.

Mourinho’s winning mentality rubbing off on United Herrera

Manager Jose Mourinho has instilled a winning mentality at Manchester United, midfielder Ander Herrera said after the club won their first major trophy of the season beating Southampton 3-2 in Sunday’s League Cup final at Wembley.

With United pursuing further silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League, Portuguese Mourinho will be looking to add to his League Cup triumph in his first season in charge.

“I think one of the things (Jose) Mourinho has brought to this club is he is a winner. He shared that with the group, with the team and with the squad,” Herrera told the club website (www.manutd.com).

Guardiola says Man City owner wants him to stay for ‘long’ time

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said the club’s owner, Arab billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, wants him to stay in charge of the club beyond his current three-year contract.

Guardiola, who took over at City before the start of the season, won two Champions League, three La Liga and two King’s Cup titles as Barcelona coach. Two domestic doubles followed at Bayern Munich.

The Spaniard met Sheikh Mansour for the first time during City’s recent warm-weather training break in Abu Dhabi.

“He would like that I stay

here for a long, long, long, long time. But of course it depends on the results,” Guardiola told British media. “If not, they would say: What happened? What can we do? What do we need to improve? That’s the process. To finish the process, they are going to help us.

Mourinho’s winning mentality rubbing off on United Herrera

Manager Jose Mourinho has instilled a winning mentality at Manchester United, midfielder Ander Herrera said after the club won their first major trophy of the season beating Southampton 3-2 in Sunday’s League Cup final at Wembley.

With United pursuing further silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League, Portuguese Mourinho will be looking to add to his League Cup triumph in his first season in charge.

“I think one of the things (Jose) Mourinho has brought to this club is he is a winner. He shared that with the group, with the team and with the squad,” Herrera told the club website (www.manutd.com).

Since the 2013 retirement of Alex Ferguson, who won more than 30 trophies during his 26year spell in charge, United had landed just one major piece of silverware -- the FA Cup last season -- and sacked two managers prior to their League Cup win.

BARCELONA - Kimi Raikkonen put Ferrari on top of the timesheets after the second day of Formula One’s pre-season testing on Tuesday but world champions Mercedes still led the way on kilometres covered.

the monkeys, play open stage to their playful exploits once in a while, the surrounding hilly forests outside the temple complex are where they are truly at home.

The monkeys are known to come out of their forest dwellings and linger around onto the pathways in the afternoon and down to sunset.

It is a rule of thumb to visit the Uluwatu Monkey Forest and the temple grounds with an accompanying local guide who would know his way with the unpredictable monkeys, such as ‘bribing’ them back when they manage to steal your hat or pair of Oakleys. Good advice is to take along a stick for walks through the ‘forests’ just to bluff the monkeys away.

Do not tempt or feed the monkeys as the locals and temple authorities have already provided them with regular snacks, such as slices of cassava. Stalking and snatching for curious items and anything on you – either from below on the ground or from up above in the trees – is common. Therefore, don’t wear interesting items, and park wisely – away from large groups of the racketing ruffians – to save yourself a messy paintjob. Hyperactive ones in the pack have been known to put on a rather disparaging act such as stripping off rubber liners off car windows and bending unlucky license plates. However, the main parking area where restaurants and shops can now be found lined up, which were all established over the last decade, has provided a safe spot to park and start off the adventure as not many of the macaques roam to these areas. Raikkonen was a mere 0.023 faster than triple champion Lewis Hamilton at the end of the day, although the Briton got out at lunchtime and handed his Mercedes to new team mate Valtteri Bottas.

Ferrari’s Finn had been second quickest in the morning, but on slower medium tyres than Hamilton’s supersofts. He set his fastest time on softs in the afternoon.

While Raikkonen ended the day with 108 laps under his belt, the Mercedes pair put in 168 laps between them after an untroubled 152 on Monday.

Hamilton’s 66 were the equivalent of a Spanish Grand Prix race distance.

Reliability more than the lap times is the main focus at this stage of the year with the new-look wider cars, on fatter front and rear tyres and with revamped aerodynamics, unveiled only last week.

Ferrari, who have kept their cards close to their chest with no media activities on the first two days after a low-key online launch,

also showed good reliability on Monday with Sebastian Vettel completing 128 laps.

Raikkonen’s best lap of one minute 20.960 seconds compared to the fastest time in 2016 Barcelona testing of 1:22.765. Red Bull and McLaren, who had a troubled debut day, had mixed fortunes on day two.

Dutch teenager Max Verstappen did 89 laps for Red Bull but Belgian rookie Stoffel Vandoorne managed only 40 in the McLaren and was second slowest. Vandoorne was halted after 29, and partners Honda changed the power unit.

“I think it was positive to get back behind the wheel after four months of no driving,” said former GP2 champion Vandoorne, looking on the bright side.

“It was a good first feeling for me and I immediately felt confident in the car and very comfortable... unfortunately we had a loss of engine power during the morning after a couple of laps, we’re still investigating what the issues are.”

Others also wrestled with garage gremlins. Renault’s Jolyon Palmer managed to do one untimed installation lap in the morning, after the team flew in new parts overnight, but ended the day with 53 done.

“I don’t believe I’ve stood up at an international competition and the rest of the field has been clean,” said Phelps, whose Olympic haul includes 23 gold medals. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt that. I know when I do stand up in the U.S. I know we’re all clean because we go through the same thing.

“Throughout my career I have though that some athletes were cheating and in some cases those suspicions were confirmed.

“Given all the testing I and others have been through, I have a hard time understanding this.”

Nelson delivered an emotional account as he recalled the day he received his gold medal while at a food court in the Atlanta airport from a U.S. Olympic Committee official who was there changing planes.

“The medal came with a side of fries and a free toy. Don’t worry about it.” Nelson joked. “It was nine years after that moment had passed.

“The color and timing of a medal matter, folks. Silver does not hold the same value and gold loses its shine over time.”

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency chief executive Travis Tygart, who has called for stronger sanctions against Russian athletes after investigations uncovered evidence of state sponsored doping, used the stage to once again blast the International Olympic Committee for refusing to get tough on dopers.

Ignoring calls to ban Russia from the Rio Olympics, the IOC left it up to individual sport

governing bodies to determine if Russian athletes should be allowed to compete in last year’s Rio Summer Games.

“At least two Olympic Games were corrupted and at the Rio Games this past August scores of Russian athletes were allowed to compete without credible anti-doping measures,” said Tygart.

“When the moment came, despite mountains of evidence and vocal opposition from anti-doping leaders and clean athletes from around the world, the IOC chose to welcome the Russian Olympic Committee to Rio.” IOC President Thomas Bach declined an invitation to attend Tuesday’s hearing.

France’s Fillon cancels appearance, due to make statement

PARIS - French presidential candidate Francois Fillon abruptly cancelled a highprofile campaign appearance on Wednesday and a newspaper reported he had been summoned by magistrates investigating a ‘fake work’ scandal involving his wife.

Fillon was holding talks with senior officials of his party, and there was no confirmation of the report in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

The 62-year-old former prime minister said he would make a statement at noon (1100 GMT). A source close to Alain Juppe, whom Fillon defeated in the contest to be The Republicans’ candidate, said he would appear alongside Fillon.

Fillon’s campaign has been battered for weeks by allegations that he paid his wife Penelope hundreds of thousands of euros of public money to be his parliamentary assistant, but that she actually did very little work. He denies any wrongdoing and says it was a proper job.

Juppe, another former prime minister, has previously ruled out stepping in as the presidential candidate if Fillon, at one point the favourite, was forced to quit the race.

The gap between French and German bond yields briefly tightened to around 66 basis points on Wednesday but market reaction was generally muted as the implications for the two-round April 23 and May 7 election remained unclear.

The investigation of Fillon and his wife has unnerved investors who fear Fillon’s campaign woes have handed the anti-euro, anti-immigration Marine Le Pen of the National Front a higher chance of winning the presidency. Polls suggest, however, that she would lose in the second round to centrist Emmanuel Macron.

Trump softens immigration stance, takes measured tone in speech

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump told Congress on Tuesday he was open to immigration reform, shifting from his harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration in a speech that offered a more restrained tone than his election campaign and first month in the White House.

Trump, in a prime-time address to a country that remains divided over his leadership, set aside disputes with Democrats and the news media to deliver his most presidential performance to date, seeking to regain the confidence of Americans rattled by his leadership thus far.

The president’s speech was long on promises but short on specifics on how to achieve a challenging legislative agenda that could add dramatically to budget deficits.

He wants a healthcare overhaul, broad tax cuts and a $1 trillion public-private initiative to rebuild degraded roads and bridges.

Trump built a base of support behind his presidential campaign by vowing to fight illegal immigration. In his speech, he took a more moderate tone, appealing to Republicans and Democrats to work together on immigration reform.

He said it was possible if both Republicans and Democrats in Congress were willing to compromise, although he also said

U.S. immigration should be based on a merit-based system, rather than relying on lower-skilled immigrants.

Comprehensive immigration reform eluded his two predecessors, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican George W. Bush, because of deep divisions within Congress and among Americans over the issue. Trump said reform would raise wages and help more struggling families enter the middle class.

“I believe that real and positive immigration reform is possible, as long as we focus on the following goals: to improve jobs and wages for Americans, to strengthen our nation’s security, and to restore respect for our laws,” said the Republican president.

Trump’s first month in office was dominated by a fight over his temporary travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority nations, repeated attacks on the news media and harsh personal criticism of judges who blocked his immigration order.

In his speech on Tuesday, he appeared to look for a reset, trying to move past a chaotic period that sowed doubts about his ability to govern effectively.

Saudi king signs range of deals in Indonesia at start of visit

BOGOR, Indonesia - Saudi Arabia’s King Salman held talks with Indonesia’s president on Wednesday and signed a range of cooperation agreements at the beginning of a 12day visit to the world’s largest Muslimmajority country. The royal visit is the first by a Saudi monarch in nearly five decades.

The leaders oversaw, among 11 pacts, the signing of agreements to take down trade barriers and a new agreement between state energy companies Saudi Aramco and Pertamina, building on an existing $6 billion plan to expand Indonesia’s biggest refinery.

The octogenarian king arrived at a military air base in the capital, Jakarta, earlier on Wednesday and descended slowly from the plane on an escalator before being met

by President Joko Widodo who escorted him along a red carpet flanked by guards to

a limousine.

King Salman is being accompanied by an entourage that Indonesian officials have said could number up to 1,500. His party is bringing 459 tons of luggage and equipment, including two luxury cars, according to media. The king was also greeted by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Jakarta’s Christian governor, who is on trial for allegedly insulting the Koran. Purnama has denied wrongdoing but his blasphemy trial has inflamed religious tensions.

The kingdom’s ambassador to Indonesia told Reuters on Tuesday the two countries would cooperate in tackling terrorism and that military officers were training in each other’s countries to counter Islamic State militants.

Secular Indonesia has grown increasingly concerned about security, after several attacks over the past year blamed on supporters of Islamic State, and has deployed at least 9,000

police and military for the 12-day visit.

Roads were closed to traffic and snipers stationed along the route the king’s convoy took from the airport to the presidential palace in the town of Bogor. Hundreds of children holding Indonesian and Saudi flags welcomed the king.

King Salman held talks with Widodo as torrential rain lashed the palace grounds.

He will also meet religious leaders, make a speech at parliament, and visit Southeast Asia’s biggest mosque, Istiqlal, on Thursday before a brief trip to Brunei and then an extended break on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali.

Indonesia hopes to attract billions of dollars of investment from the kingdom, though the trip will also focus on building cultural and religious ties and promoting education.

Saudi Arabia aims to open more Islamic

schools in Indonesia, which will teach religion using the Arabic language, and step up the number of scholarships for students.

The king’s visit to Indonesia comes as fringe Islamist groups grow in influence and Muslim leaders take an increasingly strict line on Islamic issues, which is at odds with Indonesia’s traditional brand of moderate Islam.

“The two countries face the same challenge of rising radicalism and intolerance so cooperation in those areas will be beneficial,” said Yenny Wahid, a moderate Indonesian Muslim figure and head of the Wahid Foundation. “Saudi Arabia has been aggressive in de-radicalization and rehab programs for terrorists. We can learn best practices from each other.”

“Ghost Tower” haunts Bangkok 20 years after financial crisis

BANGKOK — The 49story Bangkok high-rise was supposed to feature luxury condos for hundreds of newly affluent Thai families, but it was abandoned unfinished when the Asian financial crisis struck in 1997. Now called the “Ghost Tower,” it’s a monument to mistakes made and an object of curiosity to a steady stream of visitors.

“Sathorn Unique,” named after the up-and-coming neighborhood next to the Chao Phraya river it towers over, draws dozens of foreigners daily who come to gawk at the decrepit, stained concrete edifice. It’s a home not to Thai yuppies, but to bats, birds, weeds, trees and a black-and-white spotted cat, seen prowling one afternoon on a seventh floor balcony.

“The only way is up,” reads graffiti scrawled in chalk on the fifth floor landing, an ironic reminder of the building’s aspirational past.

Near the building’s entrance sits a ramshackle homemade spirit shrine. A yellowing poster of Thailand’s late king, clad in royal regalia, is plastered above ashes of spent incense and opened bottles of fruity Red Fanta — the ghosts’ favorite drink, according to watchman Suwaschai Dadaelor. In the booming 90s, Bangkok’s skyline was surging skyward and studded with construction cranes.

Architect and property developer Rangsan Torsuwan was flush with cash from selling ornate, high-rise condos along the beach in Pattaya.

He drew up blueprints, cleared the land and made millions of dollars pre-selling the condos.

Then came what Thais call the “Tom Yum Goong” crash — referring to the famous local sour and spicy soup. It started in Thailand when the over-leveraged government unexpectedly devalued the baht. Investors rushed to pull their money out as quickly as they could, setting off a regional financial crisis.

In the Ghost Tower’s heyday, hundreds of tourists flocked daily to the urban ruin, paying a 200-baht ($6) bribe to stumble over piles of bricks and bags of cement to stage photo and YouTube shoots and hold boozy parties on the rooftop. “The photos look so dope,” said Sorcha O’Malley, a tourist from Ireland spotted one afternoon snapping pictures from a side alley. She looks up. “I really want a photo up there, you know?”

“Even when I walking here my heart was kind of pumping already,” German visitor Annikha Mahnke chimes in. “It’s such a big adventure to go up there.”

In April 2015, two 20-something

parkour runners posted videos of themselves on YouTube ducking and weaving through the building, somersaulting off columns and dangling off balconies. Their footage went viral, drawing thrill-seekers and urban explorers.

For Rangsan’s son Pansit, who now is in charge of the building, that was the last straw. He locked up the stairwells. “I only feel worry,” he said. “This is not a complete construction, and it’s very dangerous to let people to go up there.”

A few years ago, a 30-year-old Swedish man, Stig Johan Kristian Hammarsten, hanged himself on the 43rd floor. His rotting corpse was discovered weeks later, cementing the building’s reputation as a “ghost tower.” “Pray to the spirits,” pulsates in neon orange spray paint, in Thai, on the 43rd

floor.

Suwaschai, the guard, said he pays his respects daily to appease the ghosts that haunt him at night.

One peered at him from behind a column, he says, a shadowy, powerfully built laborer with slick black hair wearing nothing but a loincloth. Another grabbed and levitated his body once when he was sick.

A Thai-Taiwanese couple stopped by to take selfies in an elevator shaft, and found other faces in the photos, Suwaschai said, pointing insistently to shadowy figures in a picture’s background.

“This is a true story, I’m not making stuff up.” A famous cinema was razed to make way for Rangsan’s folly, but rumors that it was built on an ancient cemetery have added to its mystique.

The property has been mired in

a complex lawsuit for years and it looks unlikely anyone will demolish it anytime soon. Inspectors say the reinforced concrete structure is still fundamentally sound despite weathering decades of storms. For now it serves as a support for two, 18-story billboards: one advertising Pepsi and the other the iPhone 7.

For Thais, the tower is a reminder of lessons learned. On one recent February afternoon, a crowd gathered on the Ghost Tower’s ground floor for a seminar. The topic: The tower, the financial crisis and the 20 years since. “This building is important because it is a symbol,” said Rames Promyen, director at the National Discovery Museum Institute.

“It serves as a reminder to ourselves — a reminder of how to better prepare for future crises, and how to strengthen ourselves.”(ap)

Among the three adventures, ATV ride is the most exciting because the terrain passed through is a combination of paddy fields, plantations, muddy area and river.

Australia calls ambassadors home to reshape foreign policy, trade

SYDNEY - Australia will call home all of its overseas ambassadors for a meeting, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Wednesday, as it reshapes its foreign policy to balance ties with long-time ally the United States and China, its largest trading partner.

Chief of Bantang hamlet, Nyoman Sukada, when contacted on Tuesday (Feb. 28) said the landslide disaster occurred on Friday (Feb. 10) damaged the water pipelines

in the region. The water pipelines belonging to the village posing the assistance of central government leaked due to get eroded and buried by landslides. The damages to

pipeline have caused hundreds of people at the village to face water shortages since more than two weeks. “Right now, it is still being repaired, including the reservoir is also cleaned up from mud and debris,” he explained.

Sukada said that since the damage to the pipelines people are forced to fetch clean water to the springs in the field. The water taken from these sources is just usually used for bathing and washing. As for cooking purposes, they rely on the clean water supply from the

BPBD every two or three days. “To make the water enough for all the residents, we do an allocation. Each family gets around four buckets,” he said.

In truth, he hoped the clean water can be supplied by the BPBD and Social Service every day. Considering that other villages also face water shortages, people at this village could only get the supply of clean water every 2-3 days. “We thank to relevant agencies that have already lent a hand. Our village apparatus are

still doing repairs. Hopefully, the water should have run next week,” he hoped.

In the meantime, the Section Head of Emergency and Logistics of the BPBD Bangli, Ketut Agus Sutapa, when confirmed separately admitted that since the clean water pipelines at Bantang hamlet was broken, his agency has continued to supply clean water for the residents at local hamlet. Clean water is usually supplied every 2-3 days where one supply can usually send 3 to 5 tanks of clean water. (kmb40)

It is the first time Australia has brought together all of its top diplomats from their 113 missions around the world. The aim is to draw up a “white paper” to guide Australian diplomacy for the next decade, the first document of its kind since 2003.

“At a time of significant global uncertainty, it is vital that Australia harness the experience and intellect of our most senior diplomats,” Bishop said in a statement.

She said the meeting later this month would focus on a broad reset of Australia’s approach to international relations and trade. Australia’s relations with China have been strained recently by a pushback against foreign investment by an increasingly conservative parliament in Canberra.

Kim Beazley, Australia’s former ambassador to the United States and a former leader of the opposition Labor Party, said the U.S. relationship was vital, not only because of their long-standing strategic alliance but also because of the amount of

investment ploughed into Australia.

“I am more worried in economic terms about Trump discouraging American investment globally than I am about the possibilities of a trade war between the U.S. and China,” Beazley told Reuters by telephone.

The ambassadors will meet in Canberra for two days with Turnbull, Bishop, and Trade Minister Steven Ciobo, with the white paper scheduled to be delivered around the middle of the year.

Alexandra Oliver, lead researcher on Australia’s white paper at Sydney-based think tank the Lowy Institute, said a global political shift had challenged traditional foreign policy-making.

“Concerns about immigration, about terrorism, about globalisation, about global free trade - all of those assumptions that we have held to be for the common global good are in question now,” Oliver said.

“It would be foolish to say it is just the Trump presidency that’s caused this, these are broader social movements that are evident in developments like Brexit and in the way that Europe appears to be fracturing at the edges, if not at the centre,” she said. (rtr)

Women charged with N.Korean’s murder leave court in bullet-proof vests

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia on Wednesday charged two women, an Indonesian and a Vietnamese, with murdering the estranged half brother of North Korea’s leader in a bizarre airport assassination using a super-toxic nerve agent that killed in minutes.

Siti Aishah, a 25-year-old mother of one from Jakarta, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, from rural northern Vietnam, could be hanged if they are convicted of the killing of Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb. 13.

GIANYAR - Gianyar municipal police conducted a raid to tourist accommodation at Taman neighborhood, Ubud, on Tuesday (Feb. 28). Led by the Chief of Gianyar Municipal Police, Cokorda Gde Agusnawa, it targeted six illegal villa buildings. The six accommodations were found to have no permits so that the officers directly issued first reprimand for them.

With local hamlet chief, the officers inspected the location on Tuesday around 10:00. When asked about their permit, they are not able to present it,” he explained.

He said that such condition was found at other villas at Taman neighborhood, so that there are totally six illegal villas at the location. Seeing this, the Gianyar Municipal Police immediately issued the first reprimand letter. “We’ve issued the first reprimand. We will give time for a week. If they do not respond, we will immediately issue the second reprimand letter,” he said.

Cokorda Agusnawa affirmed

that his agency would not stop at Taman hamlet. On Wednesday, the Gianyar Municipal Police are scheduled to take further action against illegal tourist accommodations in Gianyar. “Obviously, we are now aggressively taking action. We will also come down again tomorrow (Mar. 01—Ed).

No plea was recorded after the charges were read out.

But Aishah and Huong have told diplomats who visited them in custody that they were unwitting pawns in an assassination that U.S. officials and South Korean intelligence have said was organised by North Korean agents.

Huong’s lawyer told reporters outside the court that his client had told him she was innocent.

“She denied. She denied. She said ‘I’m innocent’,” Selvam Shanmugam said.

“Of course, she’s definitely distressed because she is facing death penalty,” he added.

The next court date will be April 13, when prosecutors will apply for the accused to be tried jointly.

Kim Jong Nam, who had criticised the regime of his family and his half-brother Kim Jong Un, died after the two women allegedly smeared VX nerve agent, a chemi-

cal described by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction, across his face.

He had been preparing to catch a flight to Macau, the Chinese territory where he had been living under Beijing’s protection since going into exile several years ago.

According to the charges, the women and four unnamed people, who are still at large, were in the airport departure lounge with the intention of murdering the North Korean citizen.

One North Korean man, identified by police as Ri Jong Chol, is still in police custody and has not been charged. Police have identified seven other North Koreans wanted in connection with the case, including an embassy official in Kuala Lumpur.

Amid a bitter diplomatic row, members of Malaysia’s cabinet met with a high-level North Korean delegation that arrived on Tuesday to press for the release of the citizen in custody, and for the body to be handed over.

Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam told reporters he was not at that meeting, but a decision

would eventually be made on what to do with the body as no next of kin had come forward for formal identification.

North Korea maintains the victim is a North Korean citizen, but denies he is the half brother of its leader, Kim Jong Un. South Korea’s foreign minister told a U.N. sponsored disarmament conference in Geneva on Tuesday that its unpredictable, nucleararmed neighbour had thousands of tonnes of chemical weapons, including VX. Yun Byung-se called for “collective measures” against North Korea, including possible suspension of its U.N. membership.

North Korea’s envoy to the conference, Ju Yong Choi, rejected the suggestion as “despicable” and said the country has never produced or stockpiled chemical weapons.

The country’s official KCNA news agency later said the claim that VX was used to kill its citizen was “absurd” and lacked scientific basis, calling it an assertion made by the United States and South Korea to tarnish the North’s image. (rtr)

Obese couples may take longer to conceive

MARYLAND - Couples who are obese may take longer to achieve pregnancy than partners who aren’t as overweight, a recent U.S. study suggests.

Previous studies in women have linked obesity to difficulties getting pregnant. In the current study, neither male nor female obesity alone was linked to taking a longer time to conceive, but when both partners were obese, the couple took up to 59 percent longer to conceive than non-obese counterparts.

“If our results are confirmed, fertility specialists may want to take couples’ weight status into account when counseling them

about achieving pregnancy,” said lead study author Rajeshwari Sundaram of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Maryland.

“The benefits of a healthy weight are well known: obesity increases the risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer,” Sundaram added by email.

Sundaram and colleagues focused on the relationship between pregnancy and body mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight, while 25 to 29.9 is overweight, 30 or above is obese and 40 or higher is what’s known as morbidly obese. (The National Heart,

An adult who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds, for example, would have a BMI of 23.6, which is in the healthy range. An obese adult at that height would weigh at least 203 pounds and have a BMI of 30 or more.

Researchers categorized individuals into two subgroups: obese class I, with a BMI from 30 to 34.9, and obese class II, with a BMI of 35 or greater.

Overall, 27 percent of the women and 41 percent of the men were obese class I or heavier.

Then, the researchers compared the average time to conceive for couples where neither partner was obese to couples where both fell into the obese class II group.

Couples in the obese class II group took 55 percent longer to achieve pregnancy than their normal weight counterparts, the study team calculated.

After accounting for other factors that influence fertility such as age, smoking status, exercise and cholesterol levels, obese class II couples took 59 percent longer to get pregnant.

About 40 percent of the men and 47 percent of the women also had enough excess fat around the midsection to potentially influence fertility.

In addition, 60 percent of the women and 58 percent of the men said they exercised no more than once a week, the researchers report in Human Reproduction.

Beyond its small size, another limitation of the study is that it wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to determine whether obesity directly causes infertility, the authors note. It also focused on couples in the general population, not people undergoing treatment for infertility, so the results might not reflect what would happen for all couples trying to conceive, the researchers point out.

However, unlike many other studies of obesity and fertility, the current analysis used height and weight measured by clinicians instead of relying on participants to report this information themselves, which may make the findings more accurate.

Obesity can influence fertility by altering hormone levels in both men and women, converting testosterone to estrogen, said Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg, section head of reproductive endocrinology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

“If you have more fat there is more conversion from testosterone to estrogen,” Goldberg, who wasn’t involved in the study, said.

It makes sense that obese couples would take longer to conceive because excess weight doesn’t just impact fertility in women. (rtr)

“Surgeons should discuss overlapping surgery with patients beforehand and obtain their consent if this is part of their practice,” said lead study author Dr. Michael Kent of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Generally, people understand the pros and cons of the practice once they know what it is, Kent added by email.

“Respondents understood that overlapping surgery allows surgeons to potentially perform more operations in a given day, so patients may not need to wait as long for their procedure,” Kent said. “They also un-

derstand that complications may occur when a surgeon’s attention is divided, and this may have an impact on patient safety.”

For the study, Kent and colleagues surveyed participants about their knowledge of overlapping surgery, their expectations regarding disclosure during the informed consent process and their willingness to have this type of surgery as a patient.

Half of the participants were at least 33 years old, and they ranged in age from 21 to 74.

During the survey, researchers randomly selected one of three scenarios to illustrate what happens during overlapping surgery: a hip replacement, a procedure to remove a brain tumor or a heart valve replacement.

All three scenarios offered similar descriptions of the roles filled by senior surgeons

and assistants.

Overall, about 92 percent of respondents thought surgeons should document what portion of the operations they were present for, researchers report in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

When asked specifically about assistants or trainees, 86 percent of participants thought patients should be told prior to surgery who would be in the operating room and 84 percent thought the precise role of trainees should be disclosed.

After overlapping surgery was described, about 70 percent of participants thought the practice might be acceptable in certain circumstances, such as lowerrisk procedures or in situations when an emergency occurred in another operating room. (rtr)

Division Head of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health, Jembrana Agriculture and Food Agency, AAN Mahadikara, accompanied by the Section Head of Observer and Investigation, I Wayan Widarsa, said on Tuesday (Feb. 28) that one of the three positive bite cases occurred at Sari Kuning Tulungagung hamlet, Tukadaya, Melaya, afflicted to the dog owner I Ketut Wedan on Monday (Feb. 6).

At Palungan Batu hamlet, Batuagung, Jembrana, the bite case occurred on Wednesday (Feb. 15) to 12 people including the owner, Dewa Komang Sugianyar. At Pangkung Jelati, Yeh Sumbul village, Mendoyo, the dog bite occurred on Friday (Feb. 17) afflicting to the owner, I Wayan Gendra. They are all caused by puppies aged between one month and three months.

He said the latest bite case having been dealt with occurred on Monday (Feb. 27) namely by a two-month-old puppy belonging to I Ketut Sudarsana from East Arum hamlet, Gilimanuk, biting the face of his daughter, Ni Kadek Jualita Apsari, 4.

BOSTON - Most people aren’t aware that surgeons are sometimes involved in multiple operations happening at the same time, and many patients might object to the practice if they knew about it, a recent U.S. study suggests.

Researchers focused on what’s known as overlapping surgery, when a senior surgeon performs critical components of one operation at the same that a trainee surgeon or physician assistant handles a non-critical portion of another procedure. For example, it might mean the assistant closes up an incision on one patient while a senior surgeon begins an operation on another patient.

The prospect of KUPVA BB is estimated to slow down. One of the causes is the development of cashless method of payment, and many travelers withdraw their money through ATM machines.

(KUPVA BB) in Bali throughout the year 2015 reached IDR 29.4 trillion, consisting of the purchase transaction of IDR 14.7 trillion and the sales transactions of IDR 14.7 trillion.

Then, the total transaction of foreign exchanges in 2016 reached IDR 31 trillion. It respectively consists of the purchases of IDR 7.2 trillion and the sales of IDR 7.4 trillion, an increase of 5.78 percent.

Up to January 2017, there were a total of 698 offices of KUPVA BB recorded in the database of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office. In details, they consist of 142 central offices and 547 branch offices. There is an increase of 78 offices or 13 percent when compared to the end of 2015 amounting to 611 offices, with an increase of 10 central offices and 68 branch offices.

In terms of distribution, they are

mostly located in Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar with respective shares of 70 percent, 12 percent, 10 percent, and the remaining 5 percent spreads in Buleleng, Tabanan and Karangasem and the other 3 percent is outside Bali.

Chief of Bali Representative Office of Bank Indonesia, Causa Iman Karana, said that the prospect of KUPVA BB is estimated to slow down. One of the causes is the development of cashless method of payment, and many travelers withdraw their money through ATM machines.

“We need to remind that KUPVA BB industry is very susceptible to be used as a means in various modes of crimes such as money laundering and financing of terrorism acts,” he said.

On that account, the KUPVA BB companies should always apply Customer Due Diligence (CDD) and Enhanced Due Dili-

gence (EDD) in every transaction.

One of them is by recording the identity of customers, delivering Cash Financial Transaction Reports (CFTR) and Suspicious Financial Transactions (SFT) correctly and accurately to the Center for Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis (PPATK).

With the understanding and application of the CDD and EDD in daily activities, the KUPVA BB companies are expected to take active role and participate in preventing and combating money laundering and terrorism act financing.

“Therefore, I particularly welcome the dissemination of the provisions considering that in practice it is required a good understanding by the KUPVA BB companies,” he affirmed in the dissemination of the latest provisions of the KUPVA BB on Tuesday (Feb. 28) at the Graha Tirta Gangga. (kmb42)

Ida Pedanda Sebali Tianyar passes away

DENPASAR - Ida Pedanda Gede Ketut Sebali Tianyar Arimbawa passed away at 06:00 on Monday (Feb. 27). This third President of the World Hindu Parishad died at the age of 73. His body is laid down at the funeral home on Jalan Cargo. Procession of the body bathing ritual was carried out at 16:00 on the same day (Monday—Ed).

On Tuesday (Feb. 28) at 07.00, he is cremated at the Mumbul crematorium, while his bone is taken to Griya Tegeh, Karangasem. This was conveyed by family representative, I.B. Jendra, in front of the Burn Unit ICU of Sanglah Hospital. “From tomorrow, it will be held the twelve-day ritual procession at Griya Tegeh, Karangasem,” he added.

This is undertaken because it follows the previous tradition

of spiritual teachers (nabe) either they are male or female.

Moreover, Ida Pedanda also advised that he should be treated with simple ceremony considering that he is a religious figure so that all parties can do devotional works for him.

On Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 28) is implemented the macemana ceremony. On March 1-10 will be resumed with the narpana and homa ceremony. On March 10, it will be held the pelebon ceremony and washing away to the sea at 24.00.

After that, at 07:00 on March 11 is carried out the mepandes (toot filing) and maligia ceremony. At 24.00 on the same day becomes the culmination of the maligia ritual.

He has been treating at Sanglah Hospital since January 7.

Previously, he had been treated at BaliMed Hospital Karangasem since January 1. After that, he was allowed to go home.

“He had been sent to hospital again and again,” he said.

On Sunday morning (Feb. 27) was hospitalized again at

Sanglah Hospital ICU. Actually, at noon his condition was declared to have been stable. Then, at that night his condition dropped. The news on his death did not only reach his big family, but also his students.

He had a history of complications from diabetes, heart and kidney failure of stadium 5. Ida Pedanda Gede Ketut Sebali Tianyar was named the President of the World Hindu Parishad. He has been served as higher priest for 32 years after his twice-born initiation (dwijati) on April 3, 1985.

Many positions have ever been occupied, especially in the spiritual organization.

MANGUPURA - In response to the increase in crimes and issues related to possible terrorist attacks on hotels in Indonesia – including Badung, the local tourism office is requiring every tourist accommodation apply safety standards that are being referred to as security system management (SMP).

Such endeavours are aimed at

providing protection to visitors who frequent accommodations, and restaurants by having these premises remain secure. “We encourage the participation of entrepreneurs and restaurateurs in creating security and comfort for travelers” said the Head of the Badung Tourism Office, Cokorda Raka Darmawan, on Tuesday

The government of Badung, through its tourism office, has disseminated information about tourism facilitity safety standards in Badung. Hotel security systems, said Cok Darmawan, are required by regulations governing such matters.

“This is intended to provide

security and comfort for visitors as well as employess of such businesse premises”, he said.

According Cok Darmawan, security measures should be integrated into the habits of management and other employees for the sake of common security and comfort. He therefore hopes that all businesse in the tourism industry

will comply with the regulations pertaining to their businesses, including certificates, permits and security management systems.

LOS ANGELES - Although people only saw glimpses of Beyoncé this past weekend at Oscar parties, it looks like the singer had a blast in between events, according to recent photos shared on her official website.

On Tuesday the singer, who is pregnant with twins, posted several snapshots of private moments to her official site, which included moments of her cradling her growing baby bump.

The pictures are a part of her “Oscar Weekend 2017” photo album and shows off the “Formation” singer’s party look. In one photo, Beyoncé is pictured in a green dress staring at the camera as she caresses her belly.

In another photo, the Grammy Award winner is standing sideways showing off her baby bump. Beyoncé’s head is actually cut off in the photo so the main focus of the picture is her stomach and gorgeous accessories, which include gold bracelets with jewels, a multicolor stone necklace and diamond rings.

A different snapshot features the songstress with her hands at her side, showing off the size of her baby bump.

Although she was all about flaunting the new additions to her family, Beyoncé also shared a few couple shots with her husband Jay Z. LOS ANGELES - An accountant for the Academy Awards botched the meticulous procedure for announcing the Oscar for best picture when he handed victory to “La La Land” before declaring “Moonlight” the real winner, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said.

Accountant Brian Cullinan, who media reports said had been tweeting backstage shortly before, gave presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope for the movie industry’s top award on Sunday, the accounting firm said in a statement. In a gaffe that stunned the Dolby Theatre crowd in Hollywood and a television audience worldwide, “Cullinan mistakenly handed the back-up envelope for Actress in a Leading Role instead of the envelope for Best Picture” to Beatty and Dunaway, PwC said.

“Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough

by Mr. Cullinan or his partner.” The Wall Street Journal and celebrity website TMZ.com reported that Cullinan had posted a backstage photo of actress Emma Stone on social network Twitter minutes before the mix-up.

The photo, from Cullinan’s Twitter account, was later deleted but was still viewable on Monday on a cached archive of the page.

Cullinan could not immediately be reached for comment. The mistake was not rectified until the “La La Land” cast and producers were on stage giving their acceptance speeches. It was left to the musical’s producer, Jordan Horowitz,

to put things right.

“Guys, guys, I’m sorry. No. There’s a mistake,” Horowitz said. “’Moonlight,’ you guys won best picture. This is not a joke.”

It took three hours for PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has been overseeing Academy Awards balloting for 83 years, initially to confirm that Beatty and Dunaway received the wrong category envelope. PwC said it took full responsibility and apologized to the casts and crews of “La La Land” and “Moonlight.”

“We sincerely apologize to Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, (host) Jimmy Kimmel, (broadcaster) ABC, and the Academy, none of whom was at fault for last night’s errors,” it said in its statement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, also apologized for the mishap and said

it was committed to upholding the integrity of the Oscars.

“We have spent last night and today investigating the circumstances, and will determine what actions are appropriate going forward,” it said in a statement.

An embarrassed Beatty carried the envelope to the glitzy Governor’s Ball after the show, with the writing clearly saying “actress in a leading role.” “La La Land” star Stone had been awarded that Oscar moments before.

“Except for the end, it was fun,” Kimmel said on Monday, referring to the Oscar show he hosted. “You know it’s a strange night when the word ‘envelope’ is trending on Twitter,” he said on his ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

“NOT ADVANCED MATH” Brand management experts said

it could take years for PricewaterhouseCoopers to recover. “This is not advanced math. PwC had to get the right name in the right envelope and get it to the right person,” said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University, calling the blunder a “bit of a branding tragedy.”

Under a PwC procedure, just two accountants know the names of the 24 winners after their names are placed in two sets of sealed envelopes.
