Lovato thanks fans for support after tough year

LOS ANGELES - US pop star Demi Lovato has thanked her fans, friends and family following a year in which she spent time in rehab.

The 26-year-old was taken ill at her Los Angeles home in July after a suspected drug overdose. She said little about her addiction battle in the following months but posted a message to fans on New Year’s Eve using Instagram stories. She said to her 70 million followers that she was “so grateful for the lessons I’ve learned this year”. “I will never take another day in life for granted, even the bad ones. “Thankful for my fans, friends, family and everyone who supported me throughout this year. “God bless.”

Lovato had posted on Twitter a few weeks earlier warning fans not to believe everything they read. She had written: “I love my fans, and hate tabloids. Don’t believe what you read. People will literally make up stuff to sell a story. Sickening.” It was unclear which reports she was referring to. She later added: “If I feel like the world needs to know something, I will tell them MYSELF. “Otherwise people stop writing about my recovery, because it’s no one’s business but mine. I am sober and grateful to be alive and taking care of ME. (net)

Rescuers search for survivors in deadly Indonesian landslide

Rescuers are searching for survivors after a landslide triggered by heavy rain left at least 15 people dead and dozens missing in western Indonesia, an official said Tuesday. The landslide occurred shortly before sunset on Monday in West Java province. Search and rescue teams said they have found 15 people dead and are scouring the area for at least 25 missing. Pouring rain, power cuts and

rough roads are preventing heavy machinery from accessing the area in Sukabumi regency, disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. “Relief efforts have also been hampered by a lot of people who

want to get to the disaster,” he said. “The roads are narrow which has caused rescue teams, logistics and ambulances to be stuck in traffic jams.” The search operation has halted for the day but will resume Wednesday morning. Four people have been injured in the disaster and 60 others evacuated from the area, Nugroho said.

Landslides are common in Indonesia, a vast tropical archipelago prone to natural disasters and torrential downpours. More than 20 people died in October when flash floods and landslides hit several provinces on Sumatra island, western Indonesia. In June 2016, nearly 50 people died when floods and landslides struck Central Java province. Kevin Spacey denied request to skip court hearing over groping claim

CALIFORNIA - Kevin Spacey will be forced to appear in court in a week’s time after a judge denied his request to skip a hearing over allegations he groped a young man. The 59-year-old US actor has been told to attend court to formally hear charges against him on 7 January. Spacey, an Oscar-winner, denies groping an 18-year-old in a restaurant in Nantucket, Massachusetts in 2016. He is charged with felony indecent assault and battery, and is pleading not guilty.

Spacey argued he should be excused from appearing next week because his presence would “amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case”. His lawyer Juliane Balliro claimed in court documents that Spacey’s appearance would only “heighten prejudicial media interest in the case” and increase the risk of contaminating the jury pool. But Nantucket district court judge Thomas Barrett disagreed on Monday and turned down Spacey’s

request. Spacey was charged earlier this month over claims he stuck his hands into the young man’s trousers and grabbed his genitals. The complainant’s mother, former TV news anchor Heather Unruh, said in a 2017 news conference that Spacey had bought her son “drink after drink after drink” and had “made his move” when the boy was drunk. “He did not report the crime at the time, and that was largely because of embarrassment and fear,” she said.
