‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Tops $1 Billion Worldwide LOS ANGELES - Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has cleared the $1 billion milestone in worldwide grosses in less than three weeks. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” pulled in $120.4 million globally on the New Year’s Eve weekend with $52.4 million at 4,232 domestic venues and $68 million internationally during the Friday-Sunday period. “The Last Jedi” is now the eighth highest-grossing domestic movie of all time with $517.1 million -- only $15 million behind last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in the seventh spot. On the worldwide chart, it’s now 24th with $1.04 billion, edging Universal-Illumination’s “Despicable Me 3.” The tentpole’s international total, currently at $523.2 million, will see a significant jolt when it opens on Jan. 5 in China, its final market. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has also topped Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” which grossed $504 million in North America, for the top spot among 2017 releases domestically. It’s the fourth 2017 title to go past $1 billion worldwide, along with “Beauty and the Beast” at $1.26 billion, “The Fate of the Furious” at $1.24 billion and “Despicable Me 3” at $1.03 billion. “The Last Jedi” is also winning the domestic weekend box office crown for the third time with $52.4 million,

edging Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which took in $50.6 million at 3,765 locations for the FridaySunday. However, Sony’s projection showed the “Jumanji” sequel grossing $16.5 million on New Year’s Day on Monday -- well above Disney’s forecast of $13.2 million for “The Last Jedi.” Should those numbers hold, “Jumanji” would edge “Jedi” over the four-day period with $67 million, winning by $1.4 million. “Jumanji” has been “The Last Jedi’s” biggest competitor by far since it opened on Dec. 20. The action-comedy should wind up with an 11-day domestic total of $186.3 million by the end of Monday. The action-comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, has a $90 million budget. It’s also performed impressively in international markets with $107 million thr0ugh Dec. 28. “Jedi” and “Jumanji” helped lift the entire domestic box office for 2017 to $11.12 billion, down 2.3% from last year’s $11.38 billion and off slightly from 2015’s $11.14 billion, according to comScore. Liberia’s Weah under pressure to deliver after election win

MONROVIA - Now that George Weah has emphatically won Liberia’s presidency, an even more daunting task awaits: delivering tangible benefits to expectant supporters in the face of a gutted economy and waning donor support. Weah was met by hundreds of screaming supporters on his arrival at his party headquarters on Friday. Many have waited over a decade - since his failed bid for the presidency in 2005 - to see a man they consider their own come to power. Those supporters come with high expectations that the former soccer star may have to carefully temper if he is to keep his widespread support, particularly among the West African country’s disaffected youth. In a farewell address on Friday to the senate, where he has served since 2015, Weah struck a unifying note but steered clear of policy specifics, as he did throughout the campaign. “We all are colleagues, we are Liberians. It is time for us to work together to move the country forward,” he said. Weah, who grew up kicking

a raggedy soccer ball on the dusty streets of the capital Monrovia’s Clara Town slum and later played for top European clubs, successfully tapped into dissatisfaction with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s 12-year presidency. Johnson Sirleaf won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for helping secure peace after civil wars from 1989-2003, but she has been criticised over persistent poverty and corruption scandals. The challenge of lending substance to vague campaign promises is steep in a country that ranks 177th out of 188 on the U.N. Human Development Index.

“People are expecting too much of him, but we know he will do us proud,” said Diane Fbarh, a 24year-old accounting student as she waited for Weah to appear at his party headquarters. “I don’t think he will let us down.” Chronic problems with electricity delivery leave most of the country without power and even downtown Monrovia is frequently in the dark. Remittances from Liberians living abroad account for more than a quarter of gross domestic product. The economy contracted last year and the International Monetary Fund last month lowered its GDP growth forecasts for 2017 and 2018, citing sluggish commodity prices and the drawdown of the country’s U.N. peacekeeping mission. Johnson Sirleaf’s administration was also dogged by several corruption scandals. She suspended her son and 45 other government officials in 2012 for failing to declare their assets to anti-corruption authorities and faced accusations of nepotism. She denied those charges.

‘GOVERNMENT OF INCLUSION’ Weah, 51, has vowed to form a “government of inclusion” in a country still riven by divisions based on ethnicity, class and political affiliation, but opponents have criticised his lack of political experience and education. “It boils down to the team he puts together. CELEBRATION of New Year 2018 may become the moment eagerly awaited by the people of Indonesia and even the world. However, it is not valid for evacuating people whose territory is located within dangerous radius of up to 8-10 kilometers due to the eruption of Mount Agung. No activities are made to commemorate the New Year’s Eve 2018 at the evacuation site. They mostly kill their time with silent activity. A refugee at Kindergarten / International Elementary School at Kubu Bangli village from Angsoka hamlet, Besakih, Rendang, I Nyoman Suaranya, said he has no activity to welcome the New Year 2018. It is different from the welcoming of the previous New Year where he celebrated with his little family at his home in Besakih.

“Now, we have no activity to welcome this New Year. Last year, I celebrated the New Year with my wife and children at home village, Besakih. Indeed, we have a little bit of sorrow as we cannot celebrate the New Year in hometown due to this condition,” said Suardnya while admitted he was

afraid of going home though Besakih tourism has been re-opened. He said that today he can only hope the disaster can end soon. Moreover, this father of one son hoped the Mount Agung to have a big eruption without claiming casualties. “Of the thousands of refugees, most of them pray for the

She only made a handicraft to be sold for refuge provision. “There is no special activity in the evacuation to welcome the New Year this time. We just make ingka

(plaited plate). Last year, I celebrated the New Year with my small family and surrounding neighbors. But now, we cannot make such a celebration with the family,” she said. She added that raw material to make ingka is purchased in the area of Karangasem. Each day she can produce 20 pieces and are ready for sale. “This ingka is sold in Denpasar and Gianyar area. My products are taken here by buyers where each piece is sold for IDR 5,000. I use the sale of this handicraft for provision during the evacuation,” said Suardani. (nan)

CALIFORNIA - Iridium Communications Inc said on Wednesday its 10 satellites, launched last week by tech billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX, are functioning as expected. The launch on SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 rocket on Friday had sparked concerns on the U.S. West

Coast due to its glowing trail, according to media reports. Some users also took to social media to suggest that

the glow made the rocket look like a ‘UFO’, with hashtag #aliens trending on Twitter. On Wednesday, Iridium said the 10 Iridium NEXT satellites are in early stages of testing and validating process.

Friday’s launch was the fourth set of 10 satellites in a series of 75 total satellites that SpaceX will launch for Iridium. Four additional Iridium NEXT launches are scheduled for the first half of 2018, the company said. Iridium’s fleet of satellites in low

Earth orbit will cover the entire surface of the planet, according to the company’s website. Falcon 9 is part of Musk’s attempts to slash launch costs and shorten intervals between launches. (rtr)

Gusti Putu Parwata asserted the youth should participate and play appropriate role amid this situation, not get dissolved in debates to find the right and wrong. “We hope with this sincere interfaith prayer, Mount Agung can calm down and the situation can be back to normal,” he said. New Year, governor inspects situation of tourist attraction

Probe into deadly fire at US firm’s Philippines offices focuses on possible safety lapses

DENPASAR — Closing the year 2017, Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, was going to visit a number of tourist attractions. Obviously it is meant to monitor tourist activities after the visit slumped following the airport closure due to volcanic ashes affected by Mount Agung. “Well, maybe tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) I will see the situation by traveling around. It’s better just to walk alone. Maybe I’ll go to Jimbaran area, Kuta or Sanur to see the condition of our society,” said Pastika after holding an open house at Bali Parliamentary Hall, on Saturday (Dec. 30). Since the security has been handled by relevant institution, admittedly he just wanted to know about the condition of society whether the tourist attraction is crowded by many tourists and so forth. “Hopefully, it does not rain. Happy New Year 2018 for all,” he added. Previously, central government had promised to disburse a promotion fund worth IDR 100 billion for Bali. According to Pastika, the funds are still held by central government for Bali tourism promotion on a large scale for

a quarter. In the limited meeting with President Joko Widodo in Werdhapura, Sanur, on December 22, he has requested permission to use the funds as well for transportation and consumption costs for prospective passengers if the airport will be re-closed. “I think it is a guarantee so that people do not have to worry if the airport is closed. I have spoken with GIPI and PHRI as well. Their hotels guarantee three-night stay for free, not one night for the accommodation. Our transportation is ready, while the money is already available. It’s the guarantee,” he explained. Pastika admitted to be opening an airport office with the consul general if the airport is re-closed. This effort is meant to accommodate complaints and questions from prospective passengers or tourists. (kmb32)

Some refugees claimed to be worried about the condition of Mount Agung remaining in the warning alert level. They will only go home if the condition of Mount Agung is safe and there are official directives from the government. A refugee from Besakih Kangin hamlet, Besakih, Mangku Sedeng, when met at Kubu refugee post on Friday (Dec. 29) claimed to have heard about the re-opening of Besakih Temple to tourists. Nevertheless, he and dozens of other refugee families from Besakih occupying the Kubu refugee post have no plans to return home. This 64-year-old man admitted to worry about the impact of the Mount Agung condition remaining in the warning alert level. Moreover, the village area is fairly close to the volcano namely within the radius of five kilometers from the peak of Mount Agung. “We do not dare go home to stay because the will of nature is unpredictable. If returning home to do cleanup for a while, it has been done by my son,” he said. Mangku Sedeng admitted that he will only return to his home village if the condition of Mount Agung is safe and there are official directives

from the government. He did not want to trouble the government and other parties if bad things suddenly happened related to the activity of Mount Agung when going home. “To that end, I will wait for the official instruction of the government before going home,” he said. Similar opinion was also expressed by another resident from Besakih village, Ni Wayan Yanti. This woman who sells coffee near Besakih Temple admitted to afraid of going home even though Besakih Temple has been re-opened to tourists. Only two of her younger sisters that had dared go home to sell clothes at their stall. “However, in the afternoon they are back to the refugee camp,” she said. When confirmed separately, Section Head of Emergency and Logistics of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bangli, Ketut Agus Sutapa, with permission from the Chief Executive of BPBD Bangli, Wayan Karmawan, said the number of refugees in Bangli does not change after the re-opening of Besakih Temple to tourists. Compass Group chief, five others dead in Sydney seaplane crash

MELBOURNE - The CEO of Compass Group Plc , the world’s biggest catering firm, and four of his close family members were among the six people who died when the seaplane they were travelling in crashed into Sydney river on New Year’s Eve. Richard Cousins, 58, chief of the British-based catering and food services giant, died alongside Emma Bowden, 48, Heather Bowden, 11, Edward Cousins, 23, and William Cousins, 25, according to Detective Superintendent Mark Hutchings from the New South Wales Police. The pilot, Gareth Morgan, 44, also died in the crash. Australian media reports identified the victims as the CEO’s two sons, his fiancee and her daughter. Hutchings said that police had already been in contact with UK authorities. Compass Chairman Paul Walsh said in a statement: “The thoughts of everyone at Compass are with Richard’s family and friends, and

we extend our deepest sympathies to them.” “Richard was known and respected for his great humanity and a no-nonsense style that transformed Compass into one of Britain’s leading companies,” he added on Monday. Cousins, who led Compass over the past 11 years, was due to step down in March. It followed his decision to quit his role of senior independent director of supermarket giant Tesco. He has been widely credited with turning the company’s business around and making Compass into one of the Financial Times Stock Exchange’s best-performing firms. Cousins had also been named as

one of the world’s best-performing CEOs by Harvard Business Review. Police are working with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to recover the wreckage of the plane, which is submerged in 13 metres of water near Cowan, north of Sydney. A probe into the cause of the crash has begun, with a preliminary report expected within 30 days. Authorities have warned it may take up to a year to find out what happened. The seaplane was part of the Sydney Seaplanes business that has operated since 2005 with no previous record of mishap. Seaplane flights have been cancelled until further notice. (rtr)

DAVAO CITY - A government investigator into a blaze that led to the deaths of 37 staff at the southern Philippines offices of an American market research firm says there are indications of fire safety lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy. The Dec. 23 blaze in Davao City broke out at a furniture and fabric store on the third level of a mall, the New City Commercial Center (NCCC), and then engulfed the offices of the U.S. firm, Research Now SSI, on the fourth floor of the same building in choking smoke. The only person among the 38 killed in the fire who didn’t work at the firm was a mall security officer. More than 100 SSI employees who were on duty that day managed to escape, of whom six were injured. Initial evidence from an ongoing investigation by Philippine government agencies indicates sprinkler systems on the 3rd and 4th floors of the building weren’t working as their valves were closed, said Senior Superintendent Jerry Candido, who is director of logistics at the Philippines’ Bureau of Fire Protection and one of the lead investigators into the fire. Candido said that Research Now SSI employees may have been unaware of the fire beneath them for some time because their office had its own alarm that was not connected to the system used by the mall. “That explains why people inside the SSI were not aware that fire is happening just below their floor,” he told Reuters in an interview. His comments are the most extensive yet made publicly on the progress of the investigation. In a statement issued in the United States on Friday, Research Now SSI said it is working with the authorities involved in the probe into the fire and is “confident that an impartial investigation will reveal that it has complied with all the security and safety requirements required by law”. “We are focused on helping our employees and the victims’ families, and cooperating with the government agencies, over the coming weeks and months,” said the firm’s CEO Gary Laben. Privately-held Research Now SSI is the result of a merger between Plano, Texas-based Research Now and Shelton, Connecticutheadquartered Survey Sampling International, which had operated the Davao call centre, only three days before the fire. The merged company’s major shareholders are the private equity firms Court Square Capital Partners and HGGC. Darry Gallego, assistant vice president of corporate services at NCCC, said the mall could not comment on an ongoing investigation, but stressed that safety requirements had been met, including having a sprinkler system. “The mall had passed through all the needed safety examinations and was certified by the authorities as being safe to operate and serve the public,” Gallego said in an email. The official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) released on Sunday dipped to 51.6 in December, down from 51.8 in November and in line with forecasts from economists in a Reuters poll. But the overall reading still appeared relatively solid, and marked the 18th straight month that the sector has expanded. The 50-point level divides growth from contraction on a monthly basis. The figures showed that China’s full-year 2017 economic growth would be at about 6.9 percent and around 6.5 percent for 2018, according to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, which compiles the data. Nyambutin Ritual, first time baby’s feet touch the earth

Sesarin canang as an expression of people’s gratitude to God is often found in canang (oblation) offered by people when saying prayers. Nowadays, most people use banknotes placed on the canang sari. Sesari in the form of banknotes are rampantly used recently. When viewed from the development of times, the money used keeps changing in line with the times. At the same time, sesari also follows the development of times. Sesari or canang sari is not only offered while going to temple, many other religious activities also use sesari. Like the activity of nunas baos (consulting to medium), sesari is also used. Ni Madé Gerot, 70, a traditional healer (Balian) at Besakih, Rendang, Karangasem, when met some time ago, told that pursuant to her experience during ngayah (paying devotional work), the use of banknotes as a sesari has begun since several years ago. She added that according to explanation of her senior figure, before using banknotes as sesari, there were several types of money used as sesari. Before the use of banknotes, sesari of canang used folded betel leaf completed with lime, tobacco, gambier, and betel nut. “Formerly, the folded betel leaf was used as sesarin canang, symbolizing a prostration of the community. Although currently using banknotes, the use of folded betel leaf can still be found in several places,” she said. He told that according to the story of her senior figure, before using banknotes as we find today people used perforated coin. In 1963, the sesari in use included ringgit, rupiah (silver), as well as other coins of several denominations applied at that time. After that, the use of perforated coin began and lasts until now and the use of banknotes also develops. “Using rupiah money as sesari is indeed legitimate. However, the most important is the sincerity of people,” she explained. She hoped and reminded that as devotees both as people doing devotional services and general public, sesari is an offering. Actually, the money used sesari is perforated coin. It is the symbol of Shiva Sunya meaning sincerity. (kmb)

Chinese manufacturers continued to face stiff pressure from rising costs, however. ply chain. TAPPING THE BRAKES Slowly rising borrowing costs due to a government crackdown on riskier lending practices are also expected to drag more prominently on economic activity in 2018. The central bank nudged up interbank rates earlier this month for the fourth time this year, though policymakers are keen not to tap the brakes too sharply and risk a sharper economic slowdown. Sources have told Reuters that Chinese leaders are likely to stick with a growth target of around 6.5 percent for 2018, the same as in 2017, even as they continue efforts to defuse the risks from a rapid build-up of debt. robust, kicked up another notch in December, a sister survey showed. The official non-manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to a three-month high of 55 from 54.8 in November. And a reading on the construction sector rose to 63.9 from 61.4 in November, which was surprising given slowing property investment and the seasonal decline in building activity usually seen in colder months. The services sector accounts for over half of China’s economy, with rising wages giving Chinese consumers more spending power. God is asked to provide protection for the young human. Part of this ceremony includes giving the baby a name and clarifying the meaning of this name. Most notably this is the first time that the baby’s feet are allowed to touch the earth. “According to Hindu tradi-

tion, babies are only allowed to have their feet touch the ground once they are three months old as this is when they start being able to sit up by themselves”, explained Jro Mangku. The Nyambutin, ceremony said Jro Mangku is a way to welcome the baby into the world and show gratitude in a ritual called pangenteg bayu in which water is given to Mother Earth in the hopes that the baby is given a long life. The Nyambutin ceremony is classified as a Manusa Yadnya (rite of passage) ceremony and is carried out with the hope the baby

and their family will be prosperous and have a good life. The baby’s placenta will usually have been buried in the family yard and it is in this same area that the nyambutin ceremony is held with the baby’s parents actively taking part in all the rituals involved. This ceremony is dedicated to Bhatara Surya (Lord of the Sun), Ibu Pertiwi (Mother Earth) and Bhatara-Bhatari (deities of the household), explained Jero Mangku Nurata. “The aim is to ask that the baby be guided and safeguarded”, he said. One of them is Jaja Sumping which always exists through the times. People on the Island of the Gods have various types of sumping whose name corresponds to the name of the ad-

ditional ingredient. This cake is made of rice flour filled with fruit inside, then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. For example, sumping biu (banana) has additional ingredient of banana, sumping waluh (pumpkin) made from pumpkin, sumping kuud (young coconut flesh), sumping kacang barak (kidney bean) and others. Whatever the additional

ingredient is, this cake always makes a miss. Basically, this cake tastes sticky and sweet. When coupled with the aroma of banana leaves, it results in very distinctive scent. Jaja Sumping never fades in keeping with the passage of time and always survives, even though competing against other emerging cakes. It is usually presented during the

parties or social activities like wedding receptions, tooth filing ceremony, mutual assistance and others. The main ingredients are rice flour, ripe bananas (to taste), coconut milk, sugar, pandan leaves to make the natural aroma and banana leaf to wrap it. Preparation: first of all, boil coconut milk with pandan leaves, salt, vanilla and rice flour. Then, mix together until feeling thick and

slippery. Then, put on top of the banana according to the measure. On the batter, put slices of banana, jackfruit or other fruit according to taste. After that, wrap with banana leaf like folding an envelope. Heat the steamer and put the wrapped jaja sumping batter into the steamer and wait until cooked. Likud party calls for de-facto annexation of Israeli settlements

LOD - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party unanimously urged legislators in a non-binding resolution on Sunday to effectively annex Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, land that Palestinians want for a future state. By enacting civilian law over settlements, the move could streamline procedures for their construction and expansion. That land is currently under military jurisdiction and Israel’s defence minister has a final say on building there.The settlers are subject to Israeli civilian law. “We will now promote the recognition of our sovereignty of the Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). ... We must begin to enact this sovereignty, we have the moral right and obligation towards our settler brothers,” Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan told a meeting of Likud’s Central Committee. Netanyahu is not bound to follow the resolution. He did not attend the meeting, which attracted several hundred delegates including ministers, legislators and party officials. The Likud Central Committee is the party’s governing body. At least two previous Likud Central Committee decisions have been ignored by party leaders: In 2002, it voted against the creation of a Palestinian state, but thenPrime Minister Ariel Sharon said he would act as he saw fit and Netanyahu in 2009 voiced conditional support for the establishment of a Palestinian state in a landmark speech. Political commentators said the decision might bolster right-wing support for Netanyahu, who could seek a public mandate in an early election as he awaits possible criminal indictments against him on corruption suspicions. He denies wrongdoing. Although parliamentary elections are not due until November 2019, the police investigations in two cases of alleged corruption against Netanyahu and tensions among partners in his governing coalition could hasten a poll. The day before the vote and during hours of debating, Fujimori received prison visits or spoke on the phone with at least seven of the 10 lawmakers who broke party ranks to keep Kuczynski in office, according to prison records and interviews with two of the lawmakers this week. Legislator Maritza Garcia said it was Fujimori’s gentle warning that toppling the president would destabilize the economy that cemented her decision. Nearly 450 couples gathered in a large tent in the city centre just hours before midnight to pray with their families before signing marriage certificates. Government officials oversaw each brief ceremony. “We wanted an unforgettable experience and we’re so happy that we decided to participate today,” said Hartiningish, a 38-year-old East Javanese bride, while a live band played a set of traditional and pop music in the background. Her husband, Ricky Rangga, 30, said the couple was grateful to the city administration for making the wedding possible. Many couples wore matching

colours and colourful traditional Indonesian outfits, with some brides donning elaborate headdresses and grooms carrying traditional daggers called keris. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan congratulated those taking the plunge and said the city would now host the event every New Year’s Eve. The city government raised donation funds to pay for token gold dowries for the couples to exchange.

Grooms in Indonesia traditionally present gold jewelry or money to brides on the wedding day. “We’re planning to do this every year,” Baswedan said, after posing for photographs with some couples. Security was tight around the event’s venue in the heart of the city, which took place just a few metres from the site of a militant attack in January 2016, when Islamic State-linked radicals killed four people using guns and bombs. Tens of thousands of police and military personnel have been deployed in Jakarta and across the country to safeguard holiday celebrations as the country remains on high alert.

One young pair from west Jakarta said they were looking forward to their honeymoon in the holiday island of Bali, where an active volcano, Mount Agung, remains on alert for an imminent eruption. “If we’re together, there’s no need to be afraid of (the volcano), we will just enjoy,” Ruri Nurhayati, 22, said, just minutes after marrying her partner Andrianus, who goes by one name. Eight killed, 13 missing after boat capsizes in Indonesia JAKARTA - Eight people were killed after a boat carrying 48 passengers including children sank off Indonesia’s Kalimantan island on Monday, rescue officials said. LONDON - As the man who carried athletics on his back through dark days sprinted off into the sunset in 2017, the sport itself was left to ponder an uncertain future without its shining beacon, Usain St Leo Bolt. Alas, there was to be no storybook farewell for the great Jamaican as he bowed out at the world championships in London, unable to maintain his decade-long domination as the world’s fastest man, earning only a bronze in the 100 metres. More anti-climactic still, his last race, the anchor leg in the sprint relay final, ended with him crumpling to the track with a hamstring injury, before defying his medical helpers to rise gingerly and hobble over the line. The crowd offered their hero a sympathetic roar and he applauded back to them -- a poignant scene that summed up the unique relationship between the greatest

For Bolt, at 30, it had been a championships too far yet he bowed out with reputation enhanced, showing as much dignity in defeat as he had always demonstrated pleasure after his 19 global race triumphs. IAAF President Sebastian Coe said he believed this athletics super-power, suspended amid allegations of state-sponsored doping, was significantly changing its attitude to tackling the problem but there was still no timescale for Russia’s return. Still, though, Coe, who could not be faulted for inventiveness in trying to make his sport more

relevant and appealing to a new generation, offered an upbeat assessment that athletics was enjoying a fresh lease of life.

New York City FC announced the signing of 20-year-old Paraguayaninternational Jesus Medina as the club’s third designated player on Sunday. Medina, who joins NYCFC on a transfer from Club Libertad, received a four-year deal. The left-footer fills the designated player spot created by the retirement of Andrea Pirlo this offseason. Medina made his professional debut with Libertad when he was 15, and is a five-time Paraguayan champion. LONDON - As the man who carried athletics on his back through dark days sprinted off into the sunset in 2017, the sport itself was left to ponder an uncertain future without its shining beacon, Usain St Leo Bolt. Alas, there was to be no storybook farewell for the great Jamaican as he bowed out at the world championships in London, unable to maintain his decade-long domination as the world’s fastest man, earning only a bronze in the 100 metres. More anti-climactic still, his last race, the anchor leg in the sprint relay final, ended with him crumpling to the track with a hamstring injury, before defying his medical helpers to rise gingerly and hobble over the line. The crowd offered their hero a sympathetic roar and he applauded back to them -- a poignant scene that summed up the unique relationship between the greatest

Likud party calls for de-facto annexation of Israeli settlements

LOD - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party unanimously urged legislators in a non-binding resolution on Sunday to effectively annex Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, land that Palestinians want for a future state. By enacting civilian law over settlements, the move could streamline procedures for their construction and expansion. That land is currently under military jurisdiction and Israel’s defence minister has a final say on building there.The settlers are subject to Israeli civilian law. “We will now promote the recognition of our sovereignty of the Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). ... We must begin to enact this sovereignty, we have the moral right and obligation towards our settler brothers,” Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan told a meeting of Likud’s Central Committee. Netanyahu is not bound to follow the resolution. He did not attend the meeting, which attracted several hundred delegates including ministers, legislators and party officials. The Likud Central Committee is the party’s governing body. At least two previous Likud Central Committee decisions have been ignored by party leaders: In 2002, it voted against the creation of a Palestinian state, but thenPrime Minister Ariel Sharon said he would act as he saw fit and Netanyahu in 2009 voiced conditional support for the establishment of a Palestinian state in a landmark speech. Eight killed, 13 missing after boat capsizes in Indonesia JAKARTA - Eight people were killed after a boat carrying 48 passengers including children sank off Indonesia’s Kalimantan island on Monday, rescue officials said. The national rescue agency said in a statement that 13 passengers remained missing while the rest had been rescued. The boat was on its way from Tanjung Selor to Tarakan on the Indonesian side of Borneo island, when it overturned and sank. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.(rtr)

The official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) released on Sunday dipped to 51.6 in December, down from 51.8 in November and in line with forecasts from economists in a Reuters poll. The figures showed that China’s full-year 2017 economic growth would be at about 6.9 percent and around 6.5 percent for 2018, according to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, which compiles the data. Nyambutin Ritual, first time baby’s feet touch the earth

Sesarin canang as an expression of people’s gratitude to God is often found in canang (oblation) offered by people when saying prayers. Nowadays, most people use banknotes placed on the canang sari. Sesari in the form of banknotes are rampantly used recently. When viewed from the development of times, the money used keeps changing in line with the times. At the same time, sesari also follows the development of times. Sesari or canang sari is not only offered while going to temple, many other religious activities also use sesari. Like the activity of nunas baos (consulting to medium), sesari is also used. Ni Madé Gerot, 70, a traditional healer (Balian) at Besakih, Rendang, Karangasem, when met some time ago, told that pursuant to her experience during ngayah (paying devotional work), the use of banknotes as a sesari has begun since several years ago. She added that according to explanation of her senior figure, before using banknotes as sesari, there were several types of money used as sesari. Before the use of banknotes, sesari of canang used folded betel leaf completed with lime, tobacco, gambier, and betel nut. “Formerly, the folded betel leaf was used as sesarin canang, symbolizing a prostration of the community. Although currently using banknotes, the use of folded betel leaf can still be found in several places,” she said. He told that according to the story of her senior figure, before using banknotes as we find today people used perforated coin. In 1963, the sesari in use included ringgit, rupiah (silver), as well as other coins of several denominations applied at that time. After that, the use of perforated coin began and lasts until now and the use of banknotes also develops. “Using rupiah money as sesari is indeed legitimate. However, the most important is the sincerity of people,” she explained. She hoped and reminded that as devotees both as people doing devotional services and general public, sesari is an offering. ply chain. TAPPING THE BRAKES Slowly rising borrowing costs due to a government crackdown on riskier lending practices are also expected to drag more prominently on economic activity in 2018. Most notably this is the first time that the baby’s feet are allowed to touch the earth. “According to Hindu tradi-

tion, babies are only allowed to have their feet touch the ground once they are three months old as this is when they start being able to sit up by themselves”, explained Jro Mangku. The Nyambutin, ceremony said Jro Mangku is a way to welcome the baby into the world and show gratitude in a ritual called pangenteg bayu in which water is given to Mother Earth in the hopes that the baby is given a long life. The Nyambutin ceremony is classified as a Manusa Yadnya (rite of passage) ceremony and is carried out with the hope the baby

and their family will be prosperous and have a good life. The baby’s placenta will usually have been buried in the family yard and it is in this same area that the nyambutin ceremony is held with the baby’s parents actively taking part in all the rituals involved. This ceremony is dedicated to Bhatara Surya (Lord of the Sun), Ibu Pertiwi (Mother Earth) and Bhatara-Bhatari (deities of the household), explained Jero Mangku Nurata. “The aim is to ask that the baby be guided and safeguarded”, he said. ditional ingredient. This cake is made of rice flour filled with fruit inside, then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. For example, sumping biu (banana) has additional ingredient of banana, sumping waluh (pumpkin) made from pumpkin, sumping kuud (young coconut flesh), sumping kacang barak (kidney bean) and others. Whatever the additional

ingredient is, this cake always makes a miss. Basically, this cake tastes sticky and sweet. When coupled with the aroma of banana leaves, it results in very distinctive scent. Jaja Sumping never fades in keeping with the passage of time and always survives, even though competing against other emerging cakes. It is usually presented during the

parties or social activities like wedding receptions, tooth filing ceremony, mutual assistance and others. The main ingredients are rice flour, ripe bananas (to taste), coconut milk, sugar, pandan leaves to make the natural aroma and banana leaf to wrap it. Preparation: first of all, boil coconut milk with pandan leaves, salt, vanilla and rice flour. Then, mix together until feeling thick and

slippery. Then, put on top of the banana according to the measure. On the batter, put slices of banana, jackfruit or other fruit according to taste. After that, wrap with banana leaf like folding an envelope. Heat the steamer and put the wrapped jaja sumping batter into the steamer and wait until cooked. New Year, governor inspects situation of tourist attraction

Probe into deadly fire at US firm’s Philippines offices focuses on possible safety lapses

Happy New Year 2018 for all,” he added. Previously, central government had promised to disburse a promotion fund worth IDR 100 billion for Bali. According to Pastika, the funds are still held by central government for Bali tourism promotion on a large scale for

a quarter. In the limited meeting with President Joko Widodo in Werdhapura, Sanur, on December 22, he has requested permission to use the funds as well for transportation and consumption costs for prospective passengers if the airport will be re-closed. “I think it is a guarantee so that people do not have to worry if the airport is closed. I have spoken with GIPI and PHRI as well. Their hotels guarantee three-night stay for free, not one night for the accommodation. Our transportation is ready, while the money is already available. It’s the guarantee,” he explained. Pastika admitted to be opening an airport office with the consul general if the airport is re-closed. Some refugees claimed to be worried about the condition of Mount Agung remaining in the warning alert level. They will only go home if the condition of Mount Agung is safe and there are official directives from the government. A refugee from Besakih Kangin hamlet, Besakih, Mangku Sedeng, when met at Kubu refugee post on Friday (Dec. 29) claimed to have heard about the re-opening of Besakih Temple to tourists. Nevertheless, he and dozens of other refugee families from Besakih occupying the Kubu refugee post have no plans to return home. This 64-year-old man admitted to worry about the impact of the Mount Agung condition remaining in the warning alert level. Moreover, the village area is fairly close to the volcano namely within the radius of five kilometers from the peak of Mount Agung. “We do not dare go home to stay because the will of nature is unpredictable. If returning home to do cleanup for a while, it has been done by my son,” he said. Mangku Sedeng admitted that he will only return to his home village if the condition of Mount Agung is safe and there are official directives

from the government. He did not want to trouble the government and other parties if bad things suddenly happened related to the activity of Mount Agung when going home. “To that end, I will wait for the official instruction of the government before going home,” he said. Similar opinion was also expressed by another resident from Besakih village, Ni Wayan Yanti. This woman who sells coffee near Besakih Temple admitted to afraid of going home even though Besakih Temple has been re-opened to tourists. Only two of her younger sisters that had dared go home to sell clothes at their stall. “However, in the afternoon they are back to the refugee camp,” she said. When confirmed separately, Section Head of Emergency and Logistics of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bangli, Ketut Agus Sutapa, with permission from the Chief Executive of BPBD Bangli, Wayan Karmawan, said the number of refugees in Bangli does not change after the re-opening of Besakih Temple to tourists. Compass Group chief, five others dead in Sydney seaplane crash

MELBOURNE - The CEO of Compass Group Plc , the world’s biggest catering firm, and four of his close family members were among the six people who died when the seaplane they were travelling in crashed into Sydney river on New Year’s Eve. Richard Cousins, 58, chief of the British-based catering and food services giant, died alongside Emma Bowden, 48, Heather Bowden, 11, Edward Cousins, 23, and William Cousins, 25, according to Detective Superintendent Mark Hutchings from the New South Wales Police. The pilot, Gareth Morgan, 44, also died in the crash. Australian media reports identified the victims as the CEO’s two sons, his fiancee and her daughter. Hutchings said that police had already been in contact with UK authorities. Compass Chairman Paul Walsh said in a statement: “The thoughts of everyone at Compass are with Richard’s family and friends, and

we extend our deepest sympathies to them.” “Richard was known and respected for his great humanity and a no-nonsense style that transformed Compass into one of Britain’s leading companies,” he added on Monday. Cousins, who led Compass over the past 11 years, was due to step down in March. It followed his decision to quit his role of senior independent director of supermarket giant Tesco. He has been widely credited with turning the company’s business around and making Compass into one of the Financial Times Stock Exchange’s best-performing firms. Cousins had also been named as

one of the world’s best-performing CEOs by Harvard Business Review. Police are working with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to recover the wreckage of the plane, which is submerged in 13 metres of water near Cowan, north of Sydney. A probe into the cause of the crash has begun, with a preliminary report expected within 30 days. Authorities have warned it may take up to a year to find out what happened. The seaplane was part of the Sydney Seaplanes business that has operated since 2005 with no previous record of mishap. Seaplane flights have been cancelled until further notice. (rtr)

DAVAO CITY - A government investigator into a blaze that led to the deaths of 37 staff at the southern Philippines offices of an American market research firm says there are indications of fire safety lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy. The Dec. 23 blaze in Davao City broke out at a furniture and fabric store on the third level of a mall, the New City Commercial Center (NCCC), and then engulfed the offices of the U.S. firm, Research Now SSI, on the fourth floor of the same building in choking smoke. The only person among the 38 killed in the fire who didn’t work at the firm was a mall security officer. More than 100 SSI employees who were on duty that day managed to escape, of whom six were injured. Initial evidence from an ongoing investigation by Philippine government agencies indicates sprinkler systems on the 3rd and 4th floors of the building weren’t working as their valves were closed, said Senior Superintendent Jerry Candido, who is director of logistics at the Philippines’ Bureau of Fire Protection and one of the lead investigators into the fire. Candido said that Research Now SSI employees may have been unaware of the fire beneath them for some time because their office had its own alarm that was not connected to the system used by the mall. “That explains why people inside the SSI were not aware that fire is happening just below their floor,” he told Reuters in an interview. His comments are the most extensive yet made publicly on the progress of the investigation. In a statement issued in the United States on Friday, Research Now SSI said it is working with the authorities involved in the probe into the fire and is “confident that an impartial investigation will reveal that it has complied with all the security and safety requirements required by law”. “We are focused on helping our employees and the victims’ families, and cooperating with the government agencies, over the coming weeks and months,” said the firm’s CEO Gary Laben. Privately-held Research Now SSI is the result of a merger between Plano, Texas-based Research Now and Shelton, Connecticutheadquartered Survey Sampling International, which had operated the Davao call centre, only three days before the fire. The merged company’s major shareholders are the private equity firms Court Square Capital Partners and HGGC. Darry Gallego, assistant vice president of corporate services at NCCC, said the mall could not comment on an ongoing investigation, but stressed that safety requirements had been met, including having a sprinkler system. “The mall had passed through all the needed safety examinations and was certified by the authorities as being safe to operate and serve the public,” Gallego said in an email. CALIFORNIA - Iridium Communications Inc said on Wednesday its 10 satellites, launched last week by tech billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX, are functioning as expected. The launch on SpaceX’s reusable Falcon 9 rocket on Friday had sparked concerns on the U.S. West

Coast due to its glowing trail, according to media reports. Some users also took to social media to suggest that

the glow made the rocket look like a ‘UFO’, with hashtag #aliens trending on Twitter. On Wednesday, Iridium said the 10 Iridium NEXT satellites are in early stages of testing and validating process.

Friday’s launch was the fourth set of 10 satellites in a series of 75 total satellites that SpaceX will launch for Iridium. Four additional Iridium NEXT launches are scheduled for the first half of 2018, the company said. Iridium’s fleet of satellites in low

CELEBRATION of New Year 2018 may become the moment eagerly awaited by the people of Indonesia and even the world. “Now, we have no activity to welcome this New Year. Last year, I celebrated the New Year with my wife and children at home village, Besakih. Indeed, we have a little bit of sorrow as we cannot celebrate the New Year in hometown due to this condition,” said Suardnya while admitted he was

afraid of going home though Besakih tourism has been re-opened. He said that today he can only hope the disaster can end soon. Moreover, this father of one son hoped the Mount Agung to have a big eruption without claiming casualties. “Of the thousands of refugees, most of them pray for the

Mount Agung eruption, but does not claim casualties. By that way, this condition can end quickly. Today, there is no clarity how long this condition will last,” he said. Meanwhile, another refugee from Pura hamlet, Sebudi, Selat, Ni Putu Suardani, also revealed the same thing. She explained there is no excessive activity done to welcome the New Year. She only made a handicraft to be sold for refuge provision. “There is no special activity in the evacuation to welcome the New Year this time. We just make ingka

(plaited plate). Last year, I celebrated the New Year with my small family and surrounding neighbors. But now, we cannot make such a celebration with the family,” she said. She added that raw material to make ingka is purchased in the area of Karangasem. Each day she can produce 20 pieces and are ready for sale. “This ingka is sold in Denpasar and Gianyar area. My products are taken here by buyers where each piece is sold for IDR 5,000. I use the sale of this handicraft for provision during the evacuation,” said Suardani. (nan)

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Tops $1 Billion Worldwide LOS ANGELES - Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has cleared the $1 billion milestone in worldwide grosses in less than three weeks. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” pulled in $120.4 million globally on the New Year’s Eve weekend with $52.4 million at 4,232 domestic venues and $68 million internationally during the Friday-Sunday period. “The Last Jedi” is now the eighth highest-grossing domestic movie of all time with $517.1 million -- only $15 million behind last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in the seventh spot. On the worldwide chart, it’s now 24th with $1.04 billion, edging Universal-Illumination’s “Despicable Me 3.” The tentpole’s international total, currently at $523.2 million, will see a significant jolt when it opens on Jan. 5 in China, its final market. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has also topped Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” which grossed $504 million in North America, for the top spot among 2017 releases domestically. It’s the fourth 2017 title to go past $1 billion worldwide, along with “Beauty and the Beast” at $1.26 billion, “The Fate of the Furious” at $1.24 billion and “Despicable Me 3” at $1.03 billion. “The Last Jedi” is also winning the domestic weekend box office crown for the third time with $52.4 million,

Liberia’s Weah under pressure to deliver after election win

MONROVIA - Now that George Weah has emphatically won Liberia’s presidency, an even more daunting task awaits: delivering tangible benefits to expectant supporters in the face of a gutted economy and waning donor support. Weah was met by hundreds of screaming supporters on his arrival at his party headquarters on Friday. Many have waited over a decade - since his failed bid for the presidency in 2005 - to see a man they consider their own come to power. Those supporters come with high expectations that the former soccer star may have to carefully temper if he is to keep his widespread support, particularly among the West African country’s disaffected youth. In a farewell address on Friday to the senate, where he has served since 2015, Weah struck a unifying note but steered clear of policy specifics, as he did throughout the campaign. “We all are colleagues, we are Liberians. It is time for us to work together to move the country forward,” he said. Weah, who grew up kicking

a raggedy soccer ball on the dusty streets of the capital Monrovia’s Clara Town slum and later played for top European clubs, successfully tapped into dissatisfaction with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s 12-year presidency. Johnson Sirleaf won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for helping secure peace after civil wars from 1989-2003, but she has been criticised over persistent poverty and corruption scandals. The challenge of lending substance to vague campaign promises is steep in a country that ranks 177th out of 188 on the U.N. Human Development Index.

“People are expecting too much of him, but we know he will do us proud,” said Diane Fbarh, a 24year-old accounting student as she waited for Weah to appear at his party headquarters. “I don’t think he will let us down.” Chronic problems with electricity delivery leave most of the country without power and even downtown Monrovia is frequently in the dark. Much of rural Liberia is effectively cut off from the capital when summer rains flood the pitted dirt roads. Liberia’s economy has been hit hard by a 2014-16 Ebola outbreak

that killed thousands, low prices for its chief exports, iron ore and rubber, and declining foreign aid. Remittances from Liberians living abroad account for more than a quarter of gross domestic product. The economy contracted last year and the International Monetary Fund last month lowered its GDP growth forecasts for 2017 and 2018, citing sluggish commodity prices and the drawdown of the country’s U.N. peacekeeping mission. Johnson Sirleaf’s administration was also dogged by several corruption scandals. She suspended her son and 45 other government officials in 2012 for failing to declare their assets to anti-corruption authorities and faced accusations of nepotism. She denied those charges.

‘GOVERNMENT OF INCLUSION’ Weah, 51, has vowed to form a “government of inclusion” in a country still riven by divisions based on ethnicity, class and political affiliation, but opponents have criticised his lack of political experience and education. “It boils down to the team he puts together. He needs people with integrity and skill to implement change,” said political analyst Robtel Neajai Pailey.
