LOS ANGELES - Why does actor Benedict Cumberbatch cut such a dash as British literary detective Sherlock Holmes?

That’s elementary, according to genealogy website Ancestry.com.

Cumberbatch is distantly related to author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the brilliant but quirky sleuth some 130 years ago, the website said on Sunday.

Cumberbatch, 40, star of the Emmy award-winning BBC TV series, “Sherlock,” is a 16th cousin, twice removed of Doyle.

The two are related through 14th century English nobleman John of Gaunt, who, according to records, was Cumberbatch’s 17th greatgrandfather and Conan Doyle’s 15th great-grandfather, Ancestry researchers said.

John of Gaunt, born about 1340, was a son of England’s King Edward III, meaning that Cumberbatch and Conan Doyle also have a distant royal connection.

“How rare that an actor in a major series has the chance to play a character created by a relative, especially one as iconic as Sherlock

Holmes,” said Jennifer Utley, a family historian at Ancestry.

“Sherlock,” a modern twist on the life and investigations of the 19th century London detective, first aired in 2010 and returns for its fourth series on Sunday on both U.S. and British television.

The show, in which Cumberbatch plays Holmes as a haughty, socially inept detective to Martin Freeman’s calm, practical Dr. John Watson, is the most popular TV drama in Britain, according to ratings data, and has been sold to 180 other countries. (rtr)

Tourist boat fire off Indonesia leaves 23 dead JAKARTA - At least 23 people have been killed and dozens rescued after a blaze ripped through a boat carrying tourists to Indonesian islands.nThe craft was heading to islands north of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, when it caught fire with around 230 people on board.

Another 22 people needed hospital treatment after being injured, the Thousand Island police said.

One survivor told local media: “Fifteen minutes after the boat set sail, people at the back of the boat started making noise. Then I saw smoke. There was more and more, the boat was crowded and people were fighting for life jackets.”

Another passenger said: “When we wanted to go, I panicked because I saw my son jump off the boat without a (life jacket) because

somebody else had taken it.” Nearby fishermen managed to get many of the survivors out of the water.

The head of Jakarta’s search and rescue agency, Hendra Sudirman, said 98 people had been rescued. A search involving 10 ships has been launched to try to find 17 people still missing. All those on board are believed to have been Indonesian.

The fire broke out aboard the Zahro Express about 15 minutes after it left Muara Angke port in north Jakarta early on Sunday. The cause

of the blaze has not been confirmed, although one police source said it may have been a short circuit on the boat’s power generator.

Sea accidents are frequent in Indonesia - a sprawling archipelago - with vessels often overloaded and having too few life jackets on boat.

Unemployment in Bangli remains high

Social and Manpower Agency improves LPKS program 2012 increased to 642 people, in 2013 (714 people), in 2014 (579 people), in 2015 (953 people) and 2016 (377 people).

To continuously reduce the unemployment rate in Bangli as well as improve the quality of unemployed people, the Bangli Social and Manpower Agency has a private training institution program (LPKS) that will become a mainstay to reduce the unemployment rate in the future.

The Head of the Bangli Social and Manpower Agency, I Nengah Sukarta, admitted if the unemployment rate in Bangli in 2016 remains quite high. To reduce the unemployment rate, his agency has a breakthrough to be implemented in 2017.

crease of their skill. So, their quality will improve. If their quality is qualified, they are going to be ready to work. Such measure is eventually expected to reduce unemployment rate in Bangli,” he said.

Sukarta explained that poverty and quality of population are integrated variable that result in unemployment. It is an inseparable unity. For this reason, his agency wanted to develop it to reduce unemployment rate in Bangli district.

“We admit that unemployment rate in Bangli remains high. Moreover, the job opportunities here are very scarce. However, the need of jobseekers wishing to look for job vacancy outside the region will be facilitated through the LPKS. It is capable of improving the quality of workers so that they are acceptable to work outside pursuant to their respective expertise. Thus, the unemployed people could eventually work. By doing so, the unemployment rate will decline,” said Sukarta.

He said that currently it has about 11 institutions and all of them have owned license. They consist of six institutions of cruise and hotel training, three institutions of apprenticeship to Japan and two institutions of cosmetology and beauty training.

“Of the 11 institutions owned, three institutions have been accredited, namely the Mediterranean specialized in hospitality and overseas job placement, Dwi Pahara institution and Bulan Palapa institution for apprenticeship to Japan. In 2017, we schedule to include five institutions to be accredited namely cruise ship training (3 institutions), beauty training (3 institutions) and apprenticeship to Japan (1 institution) and in 2018 we will add three new institutions namely the Atlantik, Samudra and beauty salon in Kintamani,” he said.

Tamu Lhosar celebrations

KATHMANDU - The Gurung community people in Nepal are referred to as Tamu and Lhosar means New Year. Nepal, being rich in cultural diversity celebrates an array of festival throughout the year. Nepal is also known as the world of distinctly vibrant colorful festivals. Tamu Lhosar marks the beginning of Tambu Sambat(Gurung Calendar Year) or a New year for gurung community.

Tamu Lhosar is celebrated on every 15th Poush (December or January).

Tamu Lhosar 2015 was celebrated on December 30th, with much pomp and grandeur across the nation. Various programs were conducted to celebrate the new year by the gurung community.

The Tamu Lhosar has a unique tradition of depicting 12 animals as New Year.

Fuel consumption in Bali increases 15 percent

DENPASAR - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignatius Jonan, made a visit to Sanggaran Fuel Terminal on Wednesday (Dec. 28). He appreciated to the efforts of Pertamina in securing supplies of fuel and LPG during Christmas holidays in 2016 and New Year 2017.

“We see that the conditions here until the end of the year are safe and not alarming,” he said after the field visit to the Sanggaran fuel terminal.

Security of the fuel and LPG supply has become important especially during the current holiday period. Moreover, Bali is an international tourist destination, so that fuel and LPG become the main

economic driving force.

At the same time, the Marketing Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Muchammad Iskandar, said that the national fuel stock is currently at a very safe level for 22 to 27 days.

“We have to anticipate if there is an increase in consumption during the celebration of Christmas and New Year,” he added.

In the meantime, especially for Bali, the increase in consumption is predicted to happen to some products such as Pertalite with an estimated increase of 15 percent when compared to the normal conditions reaching 406 KL per day. Similar increase is also predicted to occur in consumption of Pertamax (12 percent) and Premium (7 percent).

The average daily consumption of Premium amounted to 1,481 KL. Marketing Branch Manager of Bali and NTB, I Ketut Permadi Aryakuumara, explained that based on monitoring until December 27,

2016, the fuel consumption was monitored to be normal and could be handled well. “It happened because most people celebrated Christmas first and then took holidays. Difference in consumption can usually be known after the New Year holiday,” he said.

In the meantime, the 3-kg LPG is estimated to increase by 13 percent above the average normal consumption of around 13,495 MT to 15,281 MT. This increase was driven by the surges of cooking activities during the holidays. Other than fuel and LPG, Pertamina also

attempted to secure the supply of aviation fuel. Moreover, during the holidays many airlines added extra flights to accommodate the surge of passengers.

“We estimate the rise in aviation fuel consumption of about 10 percent of the average of the normal consumption reaching 2,000 KL per day. During this holiday up to December 27, the highest consumption occurred on December 23 reaching 2,189 KL per day. We will continue to monitor and ensure that aviation fuel stock is safe,” he said. Add destination and compete against Liberty statue

Statue of Lord Shiva to be built in Nusa Penida SEMARAPURA - Nusa Penida, in fact, does not only rely on the beauty of the coast and hills to draw tourist visit. To enrich local tourist destination, Nusa Penida will build a large-sized statue of Lord Shiva.

This four-armed statue is planned to be built on the peak of Puncak Mundi, Klumpu village. This statue will be able to be seen from the mainland Klungkung.

Lord Shiva in the hill of Puncak Mundi was acknowledged by subdistrict head of Nusa Penida, I Gusti Agung Mahajaya, Wednesday (Dec. 28). However, Gusti Agung Mahajaya does not exactly know about the size of the statue to be build. But for sure, it will have very large size so that it can be seen from the mainland Klungkung.

To realize this idea, the detailed engineering design (DED) will

even be made in 2017. “If possible, we want to compete against the statue of Liberty,” said Gusti Agung Mahajaya, last Wednesday.

According to this subdistrict head from Bangli, the statue of Lord Shiva in Nusa Penida is meant to enrich the existing tourist destinations. Besides, the selection of such statue has something to do with the history of the Nusa Penida.

The construction plan of the four-

armed statue, he said, has got the support of temple priest and community leaders in Nusa Penida.

“We have disseminated this plan to our residents by inviting temple priests and community leaders.

Based on the response of the community, they greatly support this plan,” he said.

What about the cost of the Shiva statue construction? According to Gusti Agung Mahajaya, it is estimated

to cost more than IDR 500 billion.

Such amount of budget is not only intended to build the Shiva statue, but also the supporting facilities. As planned, it will include the construction of stairs to get to the location of the statue on hill top. Besides, it also has a performance stage, wantilan hall, conference hall, gallery and others. “The statue will be placed outside the Puncak Mundi Temple and built on state land,” he added. (kmb)

To anticipate future flood

Farmers at Pancasari advised to fix environmental vegetation

SINGARAJA - Floods hitting the agricultural area of Pancasari village, Sukasada, have caused losses worth billions of rupiahs. One of the causes of the disaster is the change of vegetation in the upstream region. In response to this, farmers are encouraged to be more careful in cultivating commodities The Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said that one of the causes of the floods destroying farmland was the reduction of hydrological plants in the upstream region. The whole land is planted with vegetables by farmers with the intent to get faster results. “Now, the conditions are different. Vegetation has changed the environment,” he said when met directly at his office on Thursday (Dec. 29).

To prevent the disaster from recurring, he appealed to farmers in order they want to make improvement to the environment’s vegetation. One of the ways is by planting commodities more carefully. In other words, the existing land is not entirely planted with the same commodities, but also filled with other commodities having two functions, namely hydrological and production function. The more essential is that farmers are also asked to prepare the land in accordance with technical aspects where it is equipped with terraces and em-

bankments on the edges. “Actually, farmers have understood it but due to a greater importance, wishing to get harvest quickly, the vegetation is forgotten. We do hope this can be changed and there should be corrective measures,” he said.

In the meantime, in addressing to the losses suffered by farmers, his agency can only attempt to provide seed aid in 2017. The fund is attempted to source from the amended regional budget. “Our agency has no full recovery fund.

In the amended regional budget 2017 will be attempted to make improvement activities pursuant to the existing programs in agriculture, such as provision of seeds,” added Swatantra.

As published previously, after the land was hit by floods, farmers at Pancasari chose to delay planting vegetables. They worried for fear of a similar disaster will strike again.

Moreover, it was long before the arrival of Aan residents to Kedisan, Gambuh already existed. Residents of Aan even joined the gambuh art and settled at Kedisan.

In the palm-leaf manuscript of Arya Wang Bang Sidemen is stated that Ki Pasek Katrangan and other companions left Aan in Caka year 1450 or 1528 AD to accompany the departure of I Gusti Kacang Dawa. At that time the Aan residents were carrying the headdress of Panji which is a magic sign of Ki Pasek Katrangan. Until now the headdress remains to be stored at Kedisan.

It is made sacred and placed at clan temple of Aan residents. This inscription states if the Gambuh art at Kedisan has existed since the days of empire whose written evidence can be found in the chronogram telling about the formation of Kedisan village.

Local villagers believe that historically gambuh of Kedisan has nothing to do with and palaces in other areas, except for Kedisan Palace. Kedisan palace is the home to senior figures (royal figures) coming to Kedisan

while carrying the Panji art headdress with Ki Pasek Katrangan.

Gambuh of Kedisan was not established in the royal territory, but was autodidactically grew and developed by the people who did like the gambuh art of Kedisan. Gambuh Kedisan has its own characteristics. One of the most prominent characteristics is in terms of the dancer, in which all the dancers are men, so that the gambuh Kedisan is also referred to as gambuh lanang or male gambuh. So, it gives a slightly rigid impression as danced by men. But it makes a distinctive feature.

It is said, gambuh Kedisan had experienced dormancy due to small number of dancer generations. To raise it up, there was an initiative to bring in a gambuh instructor from Batuan village. But due strong style owned by gambuh of Kedisan and has been applied from ancient times, it is difficult to receive the dance style of Batuan. SEOUL - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Sunday that the isolated nuclear capable country was close to testlaunching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

North Korea tested ballistic missiles at an unprecedented rate during 2016, although some experts have said it is years away from developing an ICBM fitted with a nuclear warhead capable of reach-

ing the United States.

“Research and development of cutting edge arms equipment is actively progressing and ICBM rocket test launch preparation is in its last stage,” Kim said during a

televised New Year’s Day speech.

The country has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006 over its nuclear and ballistic missile tests. The sanctions were tightened last month after Pyongyang conducted its fifth and largest nuclear test on Sept. 9.

A successful ICBM test launch would mark a significant step forward for secretive Pyongyang’s

weapons capability. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 5,500 km (3,418 miles), but some are designed to travel 10,000 km or further. The U.S. state of California is roughly 9,000 km from North Korea.

However, North Korea has struggled to reliably deploy its intermediate-range Musudan ballistic missile, succeeding just once in eight

attempted launches last year.

The Musudan is designed to fly about 3,000 km (1,860 miles), posing a threat to South Korea and Japan, and possibly the U.S. territory of Guam.

South Korea’s defence ministry declined to comment on whether North Korea would test launch an ICBM soon. (rtr)

NEW DELHI - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of incentives to the poor, farmers, women and small businesses on Saturday in a New Year’s address, and defended his recent decision to abolish high denomination bank notes.

The televised speech was widely seen as an opportunity for Modi to shore up support after a radical move on Nov. 8 to withdraw all 500 and 1,000 rupee bills, accounting for 86 percent of currency in circulation.

Millions of Indians were forced to queue outside banks for hours to deposit old money and withdraw as much new currency as was permitted, causing widespread anger and raising concerns about India’s

economic growth in the current quarter.

The so-called “demonetisation” was designed to crush India’s huge shadow economy, increase tax revenues and promote the use of bank accounts and digital transactions, but perceptions that the ambitious operation was botched have hurt Modi’s standing.

It comes only weeks before Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state with 200 million people, holds an election that will test whether the popular leader has been significantly weakened.

Modi praised Indians for their forbearance.

“In this fight against corruption and black money, it is clear that

you would like to walk shoulder to shoulder with us (the government),” Modi said.

“For us in government, this is a blessing ... Corruption, black money, and counterfeit notes had become so rampant in India’s social fabric, that even honest people were brought to their knees.”

In welcoming news for Modi’s government, State Bank of India (SBI.NS), the country’s largest lender by assets, announced on Sunday it would cut lending rates by 90 basis points, after a surge in deposits in old notes.

BUSINESS China policymakers pledge stability for “complex” year ahead

BEIJING - China’s economy is on a steady growth path as 2016 ends, supported by a housing boom and billions in government investment, but the mood of policymakers is more cautious than celebratory as they face “complexity” in the new year.

Controlling risks has been a constant refrain in recent months as the focus of policymakers switches to taming asset bubbles and checking unbalanced growth stemming from efforts to fuel the economy with credit.

The central bank - while reaffirming a long-standing commitment to prudent policy - said on Friday it would pay more attention to maintaining a “neutral” stance and ensure that it is “neither too tight nor too loose”.

“At present, China’s economic and financial operations are generally stable, but the complexity of the situation cannot be underestimated,” the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) said.

Bank lending is on pace to top 2015’s record 11.71 trillion yuan ($1.7 trillion), helping to stoke a housing boom that saw prices rise a historic 12.6 percent year-on-year in November, while fixed asset investment by state firms is growing more than 20 percent. But growth has become more imbalanced this year as the effectiveness of new credit declines and companies and individuals face mounting debts, economists say.

Policy insiders expect monetary policy to tilt towards slight tightening

in 2017 as the government tries to strike a balance between supporting the economy with ample credit and preventing a destabilising build-up in debt.

Central bank adviser Sheng Songcheng told Reuters in an interview on Thursday that interest rates in China were already on an upward trend as the economy improved.

MARKET STRESS In the financial markets, China’s blue-chip stock index ended the year more than 11 percent lower while the Chinese yuan plumbed an 8-1/2 year low. Primary money rates rose this week and were largely higher this year, driven by the PBOC’s tighter liquidity stance in the second half aimed at taming risks.

The key interbank rate rose more than 25 basis points for the year, indicating tighter monetary conditions, after falling sharply in 2015.

Market participants also said the falling yuan has had a large negative impact on the money market in the second half, with the central bank buying up Chinese currency and shrinking base money.

Chief editor Talal Salman earlier in the year blamed the newspaper’s planned closure on falling revenues and Lebanon’s political and sectarian problems, including the absence of a president and functioning state institutions.

Lebanon’s parliament elected President Michel Aoun in October after more than two years without a head of state, and a new government was named this month.

of the Syrian civil war next door in 2011. Gross domestic product (GDP) grew at only two percent in 2014.

Indonesian agricultural programs deemed successful in 2016

JAKARTA - One of the aims of the Indonesian governments programs in 2016 was to advance the agricultural sector, in order to regain the countrys self-sufficiency in rice, as in the past.

Due to its efforts to introduce mechanized agricultural technology, repair damaged agricultural infrastructure, and open new rice fields, the government has been able to change the countrys rice planting season from one to two, and even three times, per year.

With its success in carrying out these programs in 2016, the government increased unhusked rice production to 79 million tons, exceeding its target of 76 million tons of unhusked rice, and stop importing rice in 2016.

“Indonesia will not need to import rice, and it could even export the commodity to other countries, “ Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said in the village of Bhakti Rasa, Sragi subdistrict, South Lampung, on Thursday (Dec 29, 2016).

National production of unhulled rice rose to 79 million tons in 2016, from 74 million tons of unhulled rice in 2015 and 70 million tons in 2014.

In order to maintain and advance the agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture will continue to promote the use of agricultural technology.

Indonesian farmers should now become skillful in the use of tech-

nology and the use of hybrid seeds.

Thus, they are expected to see harvest seasons two to three times per year.

Additionally, the use of technology will continue to be promoted by the Agriculture Ministry in order to improve the welfare of the farmers.

“Through the use of technology, including agricultural mechanization, rice production is expected to increase by 200 percent,” Minister Amran Sulaiman said, conducting a rice grand harvest in Margorejo Village, Metro Selatan Subdistrict, Metro City, Lampung on Friday (Dec 30).

According to the minister, his ministry will continue to make efforts to increase agricultural production through mechanization, such as providing machine tools for farmers.

Through measures, such as the provision of agricultural machinery (alsintan) to farmers, the ministry encourages mechanization of agriculture, a policy that will continue to further improve agricultural productivity.

He said infrastructure projects are high attractive for the private sector especially ones related directly to the public interest such as toll roads, airports and seaports.

When private investors build a power plant and PLN would buy the power at a take or pay price the prospective investors would be interested, he cited.

He said as long as the investment and the selling price to the national power utility are reasonable, there would be purchasing power agreement.

39 killed in Istanbul nightclub gun attack, manhunt under way

ISTANBUL - A lone gunman opened fire on New Year revellers at a packed nightclub on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosphorus waterway on Sunday killing at least 39 people, including many foreigners, then fled the scene.

Some people jumped into the Bosphorus waters to save themselves after the attacker opened fire at random in the Reina nightclub just an hour into the new year.

Officials spoke of a single attacker but some reports, including on social media, suggested there may have been more, at least one of them wearing a Santa Claus costume which he ditched in order to escape.

The attack shook NATO member Turkey as it tries to recover from a failed July coup and a series of deadly bombings in cities including Istanbul and the capital Ankara, some blamed on Islamic State and others claimed by Kurdish militants.

Security services had been on alert across Europe for new year celebrations following an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that killed 12 people. Only days ago, an online message from a pro-Islamic State group called for attacks by

“lone wolves” on “celebrations, gatherings and clubs”.

The Hurriyet newspaper cited witnesses as saying the attackers shouted in Arabic as they opened fire at Reina.

“We were having fun. All of a sudden people started to run. My husband said don’t be afraid, and he jumped on me. People ran over me. My husband was hit in three places,” one club-goer, Sinem Uyanik, told the newspaper.

“I managed to push through and get out, it was terrible,” she said, describing seeing people soaked in blood. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 15 or 16 of those killed were foreigners but that only 21 of the bodies had so far been identified. He said 69 people were in hospital, four of them in a critical condition.

“A manhunt for the terrorist is underway. Police have launched operations. We hope the attacker

will be captured soon,” he told reporters.

Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State and launched an incursion into Syria in August to drive the radical Sunni militants from its borders. It also helped broker a fragile ceasefire in Syria with Russia.

The Reina club is one of Istanbul’s most well known and is popular with locals and foreigners alike. It overlooks the Bosphorus Strait separating Europe and Asia in the city’s cosmopolitan Ortakoy district.

As many as 600 people were thought to have been inside when the gunman shot dead a policeman at the door, forced his way in and then opened fire.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said the attacker had used a “long-range weapon” to “brutally and savagely” fire on people, apparently referring to some form of assault rifle.

U.S. President Barack Obama, on vacation in Hawaii, expressed condolences and directed his team to offer help to the Turkish authorities, the White House said. (rtr)

Italy to seek to track down and deport migrants with no right to stay ROME - Italy will seek to deport more migrants who have no right to be in the country and will open new detention centres to hold them before their expulsion, according to a written directive and a ministry source.

Police chief Franco Gabrielli sent a two-page directive to stations across the country on Friday ordering them to increase efforts to identify and deport migrants a week after Berlin Christmas market attacker Anis Amri was shot dead near Milan.

The directive, seen by Reuters, says police should take “extraordinary action” before the “growing migratory pressure in an international context marked by instability and threats” to “control and remove irregular foreigners.”

Interior Minister Marco Minniti plans to open several new detention centres that hold migrants prior to their expulsion, a ministry source said, in line with repeated requests

by European Union partners.

The tougher migrant stance, which several Italian papers ran on their front pages on Saturday, is the first major policy change made by Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s government since it took power in mid-December, and comes on the heels of a record year of boat migrant arrivals.

It also comes less than a month

after the Berlin truck attack by Amri that killed 12, including an Italian woman.

The Tunisian Amri came to Italy by boat in 2011. Italy later tried without success to deport him back to Tunisia. He was then released from a detention centre and ordered to leave the country in 2015.

Gentiloni’s predecessor, Matteo Renzi, agreed to set up “hotspots” to identify and fingerprint migrants who arrived on Italian shores, but he refused to build large detention centres to hold migrants who did not qualify refugee status.

Only four pre-deportation detention centres with about 360 beds are now functioning. The Interior Ministry is aiming to open up about 16 more with at least 1,000 more spots, the source said. That would still accommodate only a fraction of migrants without permits of stay estimated to be living in Italy.

Of the more than 27,000 expulsion orders handed out in Italy in 2015, fewer than 5,000 were deported, according to Eurostat figures.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also called for greater efforts to deport those who do not qualify for international protection, but the process is slow and expensive, and it requires bilateral agreements with the countries of origin. (rtr)

Nunes stuns challenger Rousey with first-round title win

LAS VEGAS - Ronda Rousey’s effort to reclaim her UFC bantamweight title ended in spectacular failure as champion Amanda Nunes stopped her after just 48 seconds of the first round of their title fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Friday.

In the co-main event, challenger Cody Garbrandt scored a thrilling unanimous decision victory over Dominick Cruz in another stunning upset to claim the men’s bantamweight belt.

Brazil’s Nunes lit up the former champion from the off, rocking Rousey with a flurry of big punches, her superior boxing never allowing the Californian to close the gap and use her judo skills to take the fight to the floor.

Stunned early on, Rousey had no answer to the power of the 28-yearold and referee Herb Dean quickly stepped in to stop the fight as Rousey was stung again and could no longer defend herself.

“She did a lot for the sport - she was the champion, but now I am the champion,” an elated Nunes said in the octagon following her victory.

Rousey left the octagon immediately following the official decision, making no comment to the press.

The defeat could signal the end of the road for the 29-year-old Californian, who lost her title a little over a

year ago when she was knocked out in stunning fashion by Holly Holm’s head kick in the main event at UFC 193 in Melbourne.

Holm then lost to Miesha Tate in her first defence in March, and Tate did little better, turning over the belt to Nunes at UFC 200 in July.

LONDON — Willian scored twice as leader Chelsea overcame Stoke 4-2 to equal an English Premier League record for 13 straight wins in a single season.

Bruno Martins Indi and Peter Crouch struck for Stoke to cancel out goals by Gary Cahill and Willian. But Willian struck for a second time moments after Crouch’s 64th-minute equalizer and Diego Costa netted a fourth.

Mbengue and Sow back for Senegal DAKAR - Senegal restored experienced defender Cheikh Mbengue and striker Moussa Sow to their 23-man squad for this month’s African Nations Cup finals in Gabon.

The pair had missed November’s World Cup qualifier in South Africa but both return to participate at their third Nations Cup tournament.

Valencia coach Cesare Prandelli resigns after 3 months

VALENCIA — Valencia manager Cesare Prandelli stepped down on Friday, just three months after taking charge of the struggling Spanish team. Valencia said that the former Italy national coach had presented “his irrevocable resignation as the first team manager.”

The 59-year-old Prandelli leaves the team in 17th place, one spot above the Spanish league’s relegation zone. It has a game in hand, albeit against league leader Real Madrid.

Shortly after announcing Prandelli’s departure, Valencia issued a separate statement saying that the Italian had “presented his resignation in a surprising manner and at a delicate moment given the team’s difficult situation.”

The club said his “decision is even more unexpected at this time, when the winter transfer market is about to open (in January) and the club is working on options to reinforce the team.”

Prandelli debuted with a 2-1 victory at Sporting Gijon after taking over from the fired Pako Ayerstaran, but Valencia went winless in seven league matches. However, it did beat Leganes in the round-of-32 of the Copa del Rey. Team official Salvador “Voro” Gonzalez will once again take over as interim coach.

With Voro as caretaker coach after Ayestaran’s exit in September, the team won two matches and lost one. Valencia is the last team other than Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to win the league title — in 2004.

But it has struggled to find a coach ever since the end of Unai Emery’s four-year stint in 2012. Valencia has had eight different head coaches since then, a list that includes Ernesto Valverde, Nuno Espirito Santo and Gary Neville.

The team’s poor season led to club president Layhoon Chan, who runs the top-tier side for Singaporean owner Peter Lim, to apologize to the club’s fans last weekend. (ap)

Sp rt Chelsea defeats Stoke to claim 13th successive EPL win

LONDON — Willian scored twice as leader Chelsea overcame Stoke 4-2 to equal an English Premier League record for 13 straight wins in a single season.

Bruno Martins Indi and Peter Crouch struck for Stoke to cancel out goals by Gary Cahill and Willian. But Willian struck for a second time moments after Crouch’s 64th-minute equalizer and Diego Costa netted a fourth.

“After the second goal it wasn’t easy to go and have the good reaction, to show the great character, above all after 12 wins in a row,” Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said.

“When you win a lot, there is a great danger to be satisfied, to be relaxed, to think, ‘OK, but we won a lot in the past, now if arrive the draw, if we don’t lose, if we don’t win, it’s not important.’ No. “My players showed me great will, great will to fight, great will to win, great will to take this great achievement for us. I’m

pleased for them and they deserved this. I’m their coach, but they deserved this.” Chelsea is six points clear of Liverpool, which beat Manchester City 1-0.

Arsenal was the last team to win 13 matches in a row in a solitary campaign in 2002. The Gunners extended that landmark to 14 the following season and Chelsea can match that streak at Tottenham on Wednesday.

“Now it’s not easy after 13 wins in a row you face teams that want to beat you, not only to take three points but for many reasons,” Conte said. “It’s more difficult. We must know this. (But) when you have these type of players you can go to sleep happy.

“This first half of season was incredible for us. I think it’s very difficult to repeat this run, because we played 19 games. To win 16 games, draw one game and lose two games is a great achievement for us.”

Chelsea’s defense will have to be tighter at White Hart Lane. Saturday’s win was

the first time Chelsea conceded more than one goal in a game since the Sept. 24 loss at Arsenal. Chelsea’s 34th-minute opener came when Cesc Fabregas’ corner was met by Cahill, who rose highest to head into the net.

Stoke leveled a minute into the second half through Martins Indi. Chelsea responded, stepping up the intensity and Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant was beaten again in the 57th. Victor Moses centered for Eden Hazard, who laid the ball off for Willian to power the ball into the bottom corner. The lead lasted less than seven minutes, with Mame Diouf crossing for Crouch to tuck in the leveler.

The 29-year-old Scot succumbed to a surprise loss to Belgian David Goffin on Friday, having ended the official season with a 24-game string of wins.

Murray started the match quickly, breaking Raonic in his first two service games to take the first set. He survived a fight-back from Raonic in the second set, before wrapping up the match in the tie-break.

“It was good to finish the year with a win. It was a good match to work on returns as Milos has a strong serve,” said Murray, who has just been knighted in the New Year Honours list.

“I still feel like Andy Murray -- that feels more normal. But I am happy with the knighthood, and it is a nice way to start the new year.”

Murray ended 2016 at the top of the men’s rankings for the first time having won titles including Wimbledon, where he beat Raonic in the final, and the Rio Olympics and ATP World Tour Finals.

He will be looking to defend his world number one ranking at the Australian Open starting in mid-January. Murray has been the runner-up in the men’s singles competition in Australia five times but has yet to win it. (rtr)

Nunes stuns challenger Rousey with first-round title win

LAS VEGAS - Ronda Rousey’s effort to reclaim her UFC bantamweight title ended in spectacular failure as champion Amanda Nunes stopped her after just 48 seconds of the first round of their title fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Friday.

In the co-main event, challenger Cody Garbrandt scored a thrilling unanimous decision victory over Dominick Cruz in another stunning upset to claim the men’s bantamweight belt.

Brazil’s Nunes lit up the former champion from the off, rocking Rousey with a flurry of big punches, her superior boxing never allowing the Californian to close the gap and use her judo skills to take the fight to the floor.

Stunned early on, Rousey had no answer to the power of the 28-yearold and referee Herb Dean quickly stepped in to stop the fight as Rousey was stung again and could no longer defend herself.

“She did a lot for the sport - she was the champion, but now I am the champion,” an elated Nunes said in the octagon following her victory.

Rousey left the octagon immediately following the official decision, making no comment to the press.

The defeat could signal the end of the road for the 29-year-old Californian, who lost her title a little over a

year ago when she was knocked out in stunning fashion by Holly Holm’s head kick in the main event at UFC 193 in Melbourne.

Holm then lost to Miesha Tate in her first defence in March, and Tate did little better, turning over the belt to Nunes at UFC 200 in July.

Rousey, a judo bronze medallist at the 2008 Olympics, may be one of the biggest draws in the UFC, but she is not universally popular, and the fact that she was allowed to shun the media in the run-up to this fight was not wellreceived by fighters or fans.

But no-one can argue with her previous record as the first female bantamweight champion in the UFC and her six successful defences of her title before succumbing to Holm.

Her stature as one of the biggest draws in mixed martial arts saw her get a $3 million purse for Friday’s fight, plus an undisclosed share of the pay-per-view revenues.

In contrast, Nunes was paid $100,000 to show and another $100,000 as a win bonus for her first title defence, apart from an undisclosed share of pay per view revenues.

39 killed in Istanbul nightclub gun attack, manhunt under way

ISTANBUL - A lone gunman opened fire on New Year revellers at a packed nightclub on the shores of Istanbul’s Bosphorus waterway on Sunday killing at least 39 people, including many foreigners, then fled the scene.

Some people jumped into the Bosphorus waters to save themselves after the attacker opened fire at random in the Reina nightclub just an hour into the new year.

Officials spoke of a single attacker but some reports, including on social media, suggested there may have been more, at least one of them wearing a Santa Claus costume which he ditched in order to escape.

The attack shook NATO member Turkey as it tries to recover from a failed July coup and a series of deadly bombings in cities including Istanbul and the capital Ankara, some blamed on Islamic State and others claimed by Kurdish militants.

Security services had been on alert across Europe for new year celebrations following an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that killed 12 people. Only days ago, an online message from a pro-Islamic State group called for attacks by

“lone wolves” on “celebrations, gatherings and clubs”.

The Hurriyet newspaper cited witnesses as saying the attackers shouted in Arabic as they opened fire at Reina.

“We were having fun. All of a sudden people started to run. My husband said don’t be afraid, and he jumped on me. People ran over me. My husband was hit in three places,” one club-goer, Sinem Uyanik, told the newspaper.

“I managed to push through and get out, it was terrible,” she said, describing seeing people soaked in blood. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 15 or 16 of those killed were foreigners but that only 21 of the bodies had so far been identified. He said 69 people were in hospital, four of them in a critical condition.

“A manhunt for the terrorist is underway. Police have launched operations. We hope the attacker

will be captured soon,” he told reporters.

Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State and launched an incursion into Syria in August to drive the radical Sunni militants from its borders. It also helped broker a fragile ceasefire in Syria with Russia.

The Reina club is one of Istanbul’s most well known and is popular with locals and foreigners alike. It overlooks the Bosphorus Strait separating Europe and Asia in the city’s cosmopolitan Ortakoy district.

As many as 600 people were thought to have been inside when the gunman shot dead a policeman at the door, forced his way in and then opened fire.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said the attacker had used a “long-range weapon” to “brutally and savagely” fire on people, apparently referring to some form of assault rifle.

U.S. President Barack Obama, on vacation in Hawaii, expressed condolences and directed his team to offer help to the Turkish authorities, the White House said. (rtr)

Italy to seek to track down and deport migrants with no right to stay ROME - Italy will seek to deport more migrants who have no right to be in the country and will open new detention centres to hold them before their expulsion, according to a written directive and a ministry source.

Police chief Franco Gabrielli sent a two-page directive to stations across the country on Friday ordering them to increase efforts to identify and deport migrants a week after Berlin Christmas market attacker Anis Amri was shot dead near Milan.

The directive, seen by Reuters, says police should take “extraordinary action” before the “growing migratory pressure in an international context marked by instability and threats” to “control and remove irregular foreigners.”

Interior Minister Marco Minniti plans to open several new detention centres that hold migrants prior to their expulsion, a ministry source said, in line with repeated requests

by European Union partners.

The tougher migrant stance, which several Italian papers ran on their front pages on Saturday, is the first major policy change made by Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s government since it took power in mid-December, and comes on the heels of a record year of boat migrant arrivals.

It also comes less than a month

after the Berlin truck attack by Amri that killed 12, including an Italian woman.

The Tunisian Amri came to Italy by boat in 2011. Italy later tried without success to deport him back to Tunisia. He was then released from a detention centre and ordered to leave the country in 2015.

Gentiloni’s predecessor, Matteo Renzi, agreed to set up “hotspots” to identify and fingerprint migrants who arrived on Italian shores, but he refused to build large detention centres to hold migrants who did not qualify refugee status.

Only four pre-deportation detention centres with about 360 beds are now functioning. The Interior Ministry is aiming to open up about 16 more with at least 1,000 more spots, the source said. That would still accommodate only a fraction of migrants without permits of stay estimated to be living in Italy.

Of the more than 27,000 expulsion orders handed out in Italy in 2015, fewer than 5,000 were deported, according to Eurostat figures.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also called for greater efforts to deport those who do not qualify for international protection, but the process is slow and expensive, and it requires bilateral agreements with the countries of origin. (rtr)

BUSINESS China policymakers pledge stability for “complex” year ahead

BEIJING - China’s economy is on a steady growth path as 2016 ends, supported by a housing boom and billions in government investment, but the mood of policymakers is more cautious than celebratory as they face “complexity” in the new year.

Controlling risks has been a constant refrain in recent months as the focus of policymakers switches to taming asset bubbles and checking unbalanced growth stemming from efforts to fuel the economy with credit.

The central bank - while reaffirming a long-standing commitment to prudent policy - said on Friday it would pay more attention to maintaining a “neutral” stance and ensure that it is “neither too tight nor too loose”.

“At present, China’s economic and financial operations are generally stable, but the complexity of the situation cannot be underestimated,” the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) said.

Bank lending is on pace to top 2015’s record 11.71 trillion yuan ($1.7 trillion), helping to stoke a housing boom that saw prices rise a historic 12.6 percent year-on-year in November, while fixed asset investment by state firms is growing more than 20 percent. But growth has become more imbalanced this year as the effectiveness of new credit declines and companies and individuals face mounting debts, economists say.

Policy insiders expect monetary policy to tilt towards slight tightening

in 2017 as the government tries to strike a balance between supporting the economy with ample credit and preventing a destabilising build-up in debt.

Central bank adviser Sheng Songcheng told Reuters in an interview on Thursday that interest rates in China were already on an upward trend as the economy improved.

MARKET STRESS In the financial markets, China’s blue-chip stock index ended the year more than 11 percent lower while the Chinese yuan plumbed an 8-1/2 year low. Primary money rates rose this week and were largely higher this year, driven by the PBOC’s tighter liquidity stance in the second half aimed at taming risks.

The key interbank rate rose more than 25 basis points for the year, indicating tighter monetary conditions, after falling sharply in 2015.

Market participants also said the falling yuan has had a large negative impact on the money market in the second half, with the central bank buying up Chinese currency and shrinking base money.

The yuan ended 2016 with its biggest annual loss since 1994, putting it on track to be the worst-performing major Asian currency this year. Expectations for a weaker yuan have contributed to significant capital outflows as China’s foreign currency reserves fall to the lowest level in more than five years.

As Chinese firms step up overseas investment, which also contributes to capital outflows, policymakers announced plans this week to further open China’s markets to foreign investment. Any further opening up to foreign firms should help redress an imbalance in investment flows which is likely to rise to an unprecedented 335 billion yuan this year as outbound investment rose more than 55 percent in the first 11 months of 2016.

Chief editor Talal Salman earlier in the year blamed the newspaper’s planned closure on falling revenues and Lebanon’s political and sectarian problems, including the absence of a president and functioning state institutions.

Lebanon’s parliament elected President Michel Aoun in October after more than two years without a head of state, and a new government was named this month.

Growth in Lebanon’s economy has been sluggish since the collapse of a unity government and the start

of the Syrian civil war next door in 2011. Gross domestic product (GDP) grew at only two percent in 2014.

Indonesian agricultural programs deemed successful in 2016

JAKARTA - One of the aims of the Indonesian governments programs in 2016 was to advance the agricultural sector, in order to regain the countrys self-sufficiency in rice, as in the past.

Due to its efforts to introduce mechanized agricultural technology, repair damaged agricultural infrastructure, and open new rice fields, the government has been able to change the countrys rice planting season from one to two, and even three times, per year.

With its success in carrying out these programs in 2016, the government increased unhusked rice production to 79 million tons, exceeding its target of 76 million tons of unhusked rice, and stop importing rice in 2016.

“Indonesia will not need to import rice, and it could even export the commodity to other countries, “ Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said in the village of Bhakti Rasa, Sragi subdistrict, South Lampung, on Thursday (Dec 29, 2016).

National production of unhulled rice rose to 79 million tons in 2016, from 74 million tons of unhulled rice in 2015 and 70 million tons in 2014.

Minister of National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro said the private sector would account for to third or Rp2,667 trillion of the investment.

Bambang said the government would put up Rp1,333 trillion or one third of the total investment. The private sector including state companies are expected to provide two third of the total investment, he said at a discussion on Evaluation of Year-end 2016 and Hope 2017 here on Saturday (31/12/2016).

He said infrastructure projects are high attractive for the private sector especially ones related directly to the public interest such as toll roads, airports and seaports.

When private investors build a power plant and PLN would buy the power at a take or pay price the prospective investors would be interested, he cited.

He said as long as the investment and the selling price to the national power utility are reasonable, there would be purchasing power agreement.

Farmers at Pancasari advised to fix environmental vegetation

SINGARAJA - Floods hitting the agricultural area of Pancasari village, Sukasada, have caused losses worth billions of rupiahs. One of the causes of the disaster is the change of vegetation in the upstream region. In the palm-leaf manuscript of Arya Wang Bang Sidemen is stated that Ki Pasek Katrangan and other companions left Aan in Caka year 1450 or 1528 AD to accompany the departure of I Gusti Kacang Dawa. At that time the Aan residents were carrying the headdress of Panji which is a magic sign of Ki Pasek Katrangan. Until now the headdress remains to be stored at Kedisan.

It is made sacred and placed at clan temple of Aan residents. This inscription states if the Gambuh art at Kedisan has existed since the days of empire whose written evidence can be found in the chronogram telling about the formation of Kedisan village.

Local villagers believe that historically gambuh of Kedisan has nothing to do with and palaces in other areas, except for Kedisan Palace. Kedisan palace is the home to senior figures (royal figures) coming to Kedisan

while carrying the Panji art headdress with Ki Pasek Katrangan.

Gambuh of Kedisan was not established in the royal territory, but was autodidactically grew and developed by the people who did like the gambuh art of Kedisan. This gambuh always paid devotional performance at Gianyar Palace, Ubud Palace, and other community activities when there is a religious ceremony. Therefore, the gambuh of Kedisan becomes famous and known as the gambuh Kedisan.

Gambuh Kedisan has its own characteristics. One of the most prominent characteristics is in terms of the dancer, in which all the dancers are men, so that the gambuh Kedisan is also referred to as gambuh lanang or male gambuh. So, it gives a slightly rigid impression as danced by men. But it makes a distinctive feature.

It is said, gambuh Kedisan had experienced dormancy due to small number of dancer generations. To raise it up, there was an initiative to bring in a gambuh instructor from Batuan village. But due strong style owned by gambuh of Kedisan and has been applied from ancient times, it is difficult to receive the dance style of Batuan. Ultimately it returns to the use of Kedisan style having been practiced from ancient times. (kmb)

SEOUL - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said on Sunday that the isolated nuclear capable country was close to testlaunching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

North Korea tested ballistic missiles at an unprecedented rate during 2016, although some experts have said it is years away from developing an ICBM fitted with a nuclear warhead capable of reach-

ing the United States.

“Research and development of cutting edge arms equipment is actively progressing and ICBM rocket test launch preparation is in its last stage,” Kim said during a

televised New Year’s Day speech.

The country has been under U.N. sanctions since 2006 over its nuclear and ballistic missile tests. The sanctions were tightened last month after Pyongyang conducted its fifth and largest nuclear test on Sept. 9.

A successful ICBM test launch would mark a significant step forward for secretive Pyongyang’s

weapons capability. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 5,500 km (3,418 miles), but some are designed to travel 10,000 km or further. The U.S. state of California is roughly 9,000 km from North Korea.

However, North Korea has struggled to reliably deploy its intermediate-range Musudan ballistic missile, succeeding just once in eight

attempted launches last year.

The Musudan is designed to fly about 3,000 km (1,860 miles), posing a threat to South Korea and Japan, and possibly the U.S. territory of Guam.

South Korea’s defence ministry declined to comment on whether North Korea would test launch an ICBM soon. (rtr)

NEW DELHI - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of incentives to the poor, farmers, women and small businesses on Saturday in a New Year’s address, and defended his recent decision to abolish high denomination bank notes.

The televised speech was widely seen as an opportunity for Modi to shore up support after a radical move on Nov. 8 to withdraw all 500 and 1,000 rupee bills, accounting for 86 percent of currency in circulation.

Millions of Indians were forced to queue outside banks for hours to deposit old money and withdraw as much new currency as was permitted, causing widespread anger and raising concerns about India’s

economic growth in the current quarter.

The so-called “demonetisation” was designed to crush India’s huge shadow economy, increase tax revenues and promote the use of bank accounts and digital transactions, but perceptions that the ambitious operation was botched have hurt Modi’s standing.

It comes only weeks before Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state with 200 million people, holds an election that will test whether the popular leader has been significantly weakened.

Modi praised Indians for their forbearance.

“In this fight against corruption and black money, it is clear that

you would like to walk shoulder to shoulder with us (the government),” Modi said.

“For us in government, this is a blessing ... Corruption, black money, and counterfeit notes had become so rampant in India’s social fabric, that even honest people were brought to their knees.”

In welcoming news for Modi’s government, State Bank of India (SBI.NS), the country’s largest lender by assets, announced on Sunday it would cut lending rates by 90 basis points, after a surge in deposits in old notes.

Fuel consumption in Bali increases 15 percent

DENPASAR - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignatius Jonan, made a visit to Sanggaran Fuel Terminal on Wednesday (Dec. 28). He appreciated to the efforts of Pertamina in securing supplies of fuel and LPG during Christmas holidays in 2016 and New Year 2017.

“We see that the conditions here until the end of the year are safe and not alarming,” he said after the field visit to the Sanggaran fuel terminal.

Security of the fuel and LPG supply has become important especially during the current holiday period. Moreover, Bali is an international tourist destination, so that fuel and LPG become the main

economic driving force.

At the same time, the Marketing Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Muchammad Iskandar, said that the national fuel stock is currently at a very safe level for 22 to 27 days.

“We have to anticipate if there is an increase in consumption during the celebration of Christmas and New Year,” he added.

In the meantime, especially for Bali, the increase in consumption is predicted to happen to some products such as Pertalite with an estimated increase of 15 percent when compared to the normal conditions reaching 406 KL per day. Similar increase is also predicted to occur in consumption of Pertamax (12 percent) and Premium (7 percent).

The average daily consumption of Premium amounted to 1,481 KL. Marketing Branch Manager of Bali and NTB, I Ketut Permadi Aryakuumara, explained that based on monitoring until December 27,

2016, the fuel consumption was monitored to be normal and could be handled well. “It happened because most people celebrated Christmas first and then took holidays. Difference in consumption can usually be known after the New Year holiday,” he said.

In the meantime, the 3-kg LPG is estimated to increase by 13 percent above the average normal consumption of around 13,495 MT to 15,281 MT. This increase was driven by the surges of cooking activities during the holidays. Other than fuel and LPG, Pertamina also

attempted to secure the supply of aviation fuel. Moreover, during the holidays many airlines added extra flights to accommodate the surge of passengers.

“We estimate the rise in aviation fuel consumption of about 10 percent of the average of the normal consumption reaching 2,000 KL per day. During this holiday up to December 27, the highest consumption occurred on December 23 reaching 2,189 KL per day. We will continue to monitor and ensure that aviation fuel stock is safe,” he said. According to this subdistrict head from Bangli, the statue of Lord Shiva in Nusa Penida is meant to enrich the existing tourist destinations. Besides, the selection of such statue has something to do with the history of the Nusa Penida.

armed statue, he said, has got the support of temple priest and community leaders in Nusa Penida.

“We have disseminated this plan to our residents by inviting temple priests and community leaders.

Based on the response of the community, they greatly support this plan,” he said.

What about the cost of the Shiva statue construction? According to Gusti Agung Mahajaya, it is estimated

to cost more than IDR 500 billion.

Such amount of budget is not only intended to build the Shiva statue, but also the supporting facilities. As planned, it will include the construction of stairs to get to the location of the statue on hill top. crease of their skill. So, their quality will improve. If their quality is qualified, they are going to be ready to work. Such measure is eventually expected to reduce unemployment rate in Bangli,” he said.

Sukarta explained that poverty and quality of population are integrated variable that result in unemployment. It is an inseparable unity. For this reason, his agency wanted to develop it to reduce unemployment rate in Bangli district.

“We admit that unemployment rate in Bangli remains high. Moreover, the job opportunities here are very scarce. However, the need of jobseekers wishing to look for job vacancy outside the region will be facilitated through the LPKS. It is capable of improving the quality of workers so that they are acceptable to work outside pursuant to their respective expertise. Thus, the unemployed people could eventually work. By doing so, the unemployment rate will decline,” said Sukarta.

He said that currently it has about 11 institutions and all of them have owned license. They consist of six institutions of cruise and hotel training, three institutions of apprenticeship to Japan and two institutions of cosmetology and beauty training.

“Of the 11 institutions owned, three institutions have been accredited, namely the Mediterranean specialized in hospitality and overseas job placement, Dwi Pahara institution and Bulan Palapa institution for apprenticeship to Japan. In 2017, we schedule to include five institutions to be accredited namely cruise ship training (3 institutions), beauty training (3 institutions) and apprenticeship to Japan (1 institution) and in 2018 we will add three new institutions namely the Atlantik, Samudra and beauty salon in Kintamani,” he said.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sherlock Holmes is match made in history

LOS ANGELES - Why does actor Benedict Cumberbatch cut such a dash as British literary detective Sherlock Holmes?

That’s elementary, according to genealogy website Ancestry.com.

Cumberbatch is distantly related to author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created the brilliant but quirky sleuth some 130 years ago, the website said on Sunday.

Cumberbatch, 40, star of the Emmy award-winning BBC TV series, “Sherlock,” is a 16th cousin, twice removed of Doyle.

The two are related through 14th century English nobleman John of Gaunt, who, according to records, was Cumberbatch’s 17th greatgrandfather and Conan Doyle’s 15th great-grandfather, Ancestry researchers said.

John of Gaunt, born about 1340, was a son of England’s King Edward III, meaning that Cumberbatch and Conan Doyle also have a distant royal connection.

“How rare that an actor in a major series has the chance to play a character created by a relative, especially one as iconic as Sherlock

Holmes,” said Jennifer Utley, a family historian at Ancestry.

“Sherlock,” a modern twist on the life and investigations of the 19th century London detective, first aired in 2010 and returns for its fourth series on Sunday on both U.S. and British television.

The show, in which Cumberbatch plays Holmes as a haughty, socially inept detective to Martin Freeman’s calm, practical Dr. John Watson, is the most popular TV drama in Britain, according to ratings data, and has been sold to 180 other countries. (rtr)

Tourist boat fire off Indonesia leaves 23 dead JAKARTA - At least 23 people have been killed and dozens rescued after a blaze ripped through a boat carrying tourists to Indonesian islands.nThe craft was heading to islands north of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, when it caught fire with around 230 people on board.

Another 22 people needed hospital treatment after being injured, the Thousand Island police said.

One survivor told local media: “Fifteen minutes after the boat set sail, people at the back of the boat started making noise. Then I saw smoke. There was more and more, the boat was crowded and people were fighting for life jackets.”

Another passenger said: “When we wanted to go, I panicked because I saw my son jump off the boat without a (life jacket) because

somebody else had taken it.” Nearby fishermen managed to get many of the survivors out of the water.

The head of Jakarta’s search and rescue agency, Hendra Sudirman, said 98 people had been rescued. A search involving 10 ships has been launched to try to find 17 people still missing. All those on board are believed to have been Indonesian.

The fire broke out aboard the Zahro Express about 15 minutes after it left Muara Angke port in north Jakarta early on Sunday. The cause

of the blaze has not been confirmed, although one police source said it may have been a short circuit on the boat’s power generator.

Sea accidents are frequent in Indonesia - a sprawling archipelago - with vessels often overloaded and having too few life jackets on boat.
