LOS ANGELES - “Star Wars” fans got their first glimpse Friday of the space saga’s long-awaited new film -- including a controversial new-look lightsaber -- but still have to wait a year for the movie itself. ships are back.

The Millennium Falcon, the famed spaceship of smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his hairy first mate Chewbacca, is seen looping and skimming a planet, preparing for combat with the Empire’s TIE fighters.

The X-wing fighters of the Rebel Alliance are also seen.

“Star Wars” has attracted generations of loyal fans ever since the first film arrived in 1977 recounting the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Solo and Darth Vader.

Filming began in Britain in May on Episode VII. Original cast members Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will star in the new film, along with several newcomers including Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o.

Other cast members include veteran actor Max von Sydow, “Girls” star Adam Driver, motion-capture expert Andy Serkis and “Harry Potter” veteran Domhnall Gleeson.

The new trailer did not include footage of any of the main veteran characters, but did include glimpses of new British cast member John Boyega, clad as a Stormtrooper and racing across a desert landscape.

commentator said looks like a giant flash drive with engines attached. There is also a rolling R2D2-like droid.

Filming on the new movie was not without hiccups: in June, the 72-year-old Ford broke his leg on the set when a garage door fell and hit him at Pinewood Studios outside London.

Ford is back as smuggler Solo, the 62-year-old Hamill will return as Jedi Knight Skywalker and Fisher, 57, reprises the role of Princess Leia.

The movie’s screenplay is written by J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote two previous “Star Wars” films.

The film is produced by Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and Bryan Burk, while multiple Oscar-winner Williams returns as the soundtrack composer.

The original 1977-83 trilogy -- “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi -- “ was followed by a prequel trilogy between 1999 and 2005: “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.”

The two previous trilogies inspired spin-off books, comics, toys, videogames and cartoons -- earning $4.4 billion.

Disney shelled out $4 billion to buy “Star Wars” founder George Lucas’s Lucasfilm in October 2012.

Madonna launched children’s hospital in Malawi

BLANTYRE, Malawi — Madonna is in the African country of Malawi for the first time since she had a falling out with the former president last year.

Madonna on Thursday launched a 50-bed pediatrics ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre. Sarah Ezzy, director of the charity Raising Malawi, said the new facility is the first dedicated pediatric intensive

care unit in the country.

Former Malawi President Joyce Banda had stripped Madonna of her VIP status last year by forcing the singer to check into her private jet as an ordinary passenger. New President Peter Mutharika has restored the singer’s VIP status.

The president’s spokesman said the country appreciates Madonna’s charity work. Madonna helps fund a number of charities — including orphanages, schools and medical facilities — in Malawi.

“There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?” a gravelvoiced narrator intones in the brief trailer, before a squadron of Stormtroopers is seen prepping for action.

Studio giant Disney earlier this month revealed the name of the new episode, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” saying filming had been completed on the movie, due in theaters on December 18, 2015.

“The dark side ... and the light,” the voiceover continues, as a cloaked figure -- perhaps a dark Sith Lord -- brandishes his lightsaber in a snowy forest, before John Williams’ stirring theme plays.

Inevitably, “Star Wars” fans immediately flooded the Internet with comments, observations -and speculation.

Many seemed split about the new design of the lightsaber, which had flaming laser beams coming out the handle in what looked like some sort of handguard.

“Stupid, stupid, STUPID!!!” said pears009 online. “This ‘New’ design (is) neither ‘’COOL’ NOR Functional in a fight... YoU’d cut your own FREAKING hand off in a fight with a Tweak of the wrist!!! Uuuuggghhhh!!!”

Rainy season, Batur caldera area prone to avalanche Bali Post

BANGLI – The Batur caldera region in Kintamani is prone to avalanches, especially during heavy rains, which have been hitting Bangli over the past few days. In anticipation of such a disaster, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli has re-issued a circular on disaster awareness.

Chief Executive of the BPBD Bangli, Wayan Sugiarta, confirmed on Friday (Nov 28) that the government regularly distributes the circular on disasters preparedness during the rainy season. The circular is addressed to the disaster mitigation agency, the military and police authorities, and also to heads of the community. In the document, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli asks the entire community to be alert to various disasters that tend to occur during heavy rains. “Basically, we remind the community and village authorities to be careful and vigilant against various disasters during rainy season,” said Sugiarta.

Other than issuing the circular, his party had also mapped the avalanche points in Bangli County. To map the region, his party was assisted by a team of geology experts and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of the province of Bali.

According to the avalanche mapping, the areas at risk are divided into three levels, namely the heavy, medium and light risk of avalanche. The regions with a high risk of avalanche are spread across the subdistrict of Kintamani such as along the Batur caldera and some villages in the northern region of Kintamani including Subaya. For the region of Bangli, Susut and Tembuku have a light risk of avalanche.

To further strengthen public awareness, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Bangli regularly disseminates disaster alerts to villages. In addition to awareness campaigns, his party also continues to intensify training on the handling of avalanche occurances. As a result, when disaster strikes, everyone knows what to do. (ina)

Buleleng ready to send apprentice to Japan

SINGARAJA - Changes in lifestyle and the needs of the community make land conversion unavoidable. This is a reality in different regions of Bali, and Buleleng County is no exception. By and large, farmers do not feel the need to convert arable land into residential buildings in part because they do not have the authority to do so as few farmers in Buleleng own their land- most are sharecroppers.

Bali Post Landowners are the ones who have full rights to manage or sell their land.

The Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said, that when agricultural land no longer produces profits, land-owners often tend to transform their agricultural land into rental shops or other productive buildings.

“As we can see, landowners prefer building shops to farming. They rent these shops, usually by yearly contract. Of course, this is very tempting because it immediately results in profits,” he said.

The agency was still waiting for

the implementation of the Regional Bylaw on Spatial Plan (RTRW) for Buleleng, drafted in 2013. Once the regional bylaw had been issued, it is expected to reduce real estate development and help to maintain agricultural land. Based on the data at the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency for 1992-2012, land conversion reached 1,103 hectares, or approximately 10 percent of the total agricultural land in Buleleng, namely 11,039 hectares.

Some areas in Buleleng have un-

dergone high rates of land conversion such as in Seririt, Banjar and Sawan.

Most of the lands were converted from farming into residential or for housing purposes. “Most land conversions are intended for residential purposes. However this is not always the case as we saw when several hectares of paddy fields were converted into vineyard, as is often happening in Banjar subdistrict. Many residents have switched professions becoming grape growers as this is considered a promising field.” he said. (kmb34)

SINGARAJA – The empowerment of employment opportunities in Buleleng continues to be improved by providing the expereince of working overseas. The Head of the Buleleng Manpower and Resettlement Agency has resumed cooperation with Japan in the form of an apprenticeship program in Japan, after it was interrupted last year.

The Head of the Manpower and Resettlement Agency, Ni Made Dwi Priyanti Putri Koriawan, said on Friday (Nov 28) that through the potential manpower of Buleleng has been given another chance to work overseas in 2015.

She said that sending apprentices to Japan for the program had been interrupted in 2014, due to a breach of contract committed by the apprentices “We have been lobbying the Japanese organizers for Buleleng County to be given another chance, and we finally succeeded” said Dwi Priyanti. (kmb34)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - The regional police command in Bali will deploy its forces to secure the national congress of Golkar Party scheduled to be opened on Sunday evening and to last until December 3 to elect party’s next leader.

ISTANBUL - The Hagia Sophia, which the pope visits Sunday on his tour of Istanbul, has in the course of some 15 centuries of its history served as a church, a mosque and now a museum but still inflames passions.

Its status as a secular museum open to all allows believers of all faiths to enjoy its astonishing architecture. But periodic calls in the last years for it to serve again as a mosque have caused anger among Christians.

The great building was constructed in the sixth century as a church in the Christian Byzantine Empire, although a church had stood on the site at the confluence of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus since the fourth century.

It was the seat of the Patriarchate of Constantinople -- the name of the city until it was officially changed to Istanbul in the twentieth century.

The Hagia Sophia played a crucial role in the schism between the eastern and western Christian Churches in 1054, when a cardinal of Rome laid on its altar a bill excommunication the Patriarch

Michael I, sparking the split that continues to this day.

It was badly damaged in the notorious sacking of Constantinople by the crusaders in 1204 and briefly served as a Roman Catholic Cathedral before being reconsecrated as a Greek Orthodox church half a century later after the Byzantine recapture of the city.

When the Ottoman armies under Mehmet II conquered the city in 1453 he ordered the immediate conversion of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Islamic minarets were built around its Byzantine dome.

It served as a mosque until after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire when in the mid 1930s the authorities of the new Turkish state under secular leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk ordered it to become a museum for all.

But under the rule of the Islam-

ic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), co-founded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan which came to power in 2002, there have been noises about reconverting the Hagia Sophia into a mosque.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc caused a furore in November 2013 when he indicated that he hoped to change the status of the Hagia Sophia.

“We are looking at a sad Hagia Sophia, but hopefully we will see it smiling again soon,” Arinc said, describing the complex as the “Hagia Sophia Mosque”.

Greece reacted furiously, saying such statements “are offending the religious feeling of millions of Christians.”

The Turkish government has long been accused by its secular opponents of forcing Islamic values on the predominantly Muslim but strictly secular country.

He said besides deploying forces the police also sent intelligence officers who work covertly.

He did not tell the exact number of personnel he would deploy but said he would deploy two thirds of the command’s forces totalling 12,000 personnel.

The congress is scheduled at 8pm at Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua in the Badung district and is attended

by Golkar party leaders from regions across the country.

Deputy General Chairman of Golkar Party Agung Laksono has recently formed a party savior presidium and decided to hold a congress in January 2015.

The presidium members include Priyo Budi Santoso, Hajriyanto Y Thohari, Zainuddin Amali, Agus Gumiwang, Lauren Siburian, Yorrys Raweyai, Agun Gunandjar, and Ibnu Munzir.

PARIS - Brazil’s Afro-style Capoeira fight and dance, Estonia’s medieval tradition of smoke saunas and the nomadic yurts of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were listed by UNESCO as intangible world heritage sites Thursday.

Some 40 proposals were being considered this week by the Parisbased UN cultural agency as meriting a place on the list of “intangible cultural heritage”, from the Arirang folk songs of Korea to Armenia’s traditional Lavash bread.

Japan’s traditional hand-made Washi paper along with Burundi’s ritual dance of the royal drum too were among 18 traditions or cultural practices added to the prestigious list aimed at protecting endangered traditions.

“It may be a drop in the ocean but we are moving ahead bit by bit. Countries are realising that their heritage is important to all of humanity,” Cecile Duvelle, who runs UNESCO’s intangible heritage section told AFP. She said the list was “about identity not tourism.”

Brazil’s Capoeira, which is a fight and also a dance, was chosen because “it also functions as an affirmation of mutual respect between communities.”

Chile’s Bailes Chinos, a brotherhood of musicians who dance, sing and make music, “function as a model for social integration and cohesion,” UNESCO said.

“It was very crowded as thousands of people joined the feast,” said Chairman of the PDI-P Denpasar, Gusti Ngurah Gede. He added that Puspayoga was the native to Bali being worthy to become a minister. “It is a mandatory where a native to Bali was entrusted.

With the MoU signed last November 21, the cooperative activists were expected to promptly submit their deed because the difficulties they had previously faced, have now been eliminated. In the MoU it was even agreed that the submission of establishment deeds would be free of charge “In addition to being free, the first 10 cooperatives to register will be given incentive funds worth IDR 2.5 million.

The Mubarak trial, however, was concerned only with the killing of 239 protesters whose names were cited in charge documents, not the nearly 900 killed in total during the 18 days of the revolt.

Saturday’s ruling marks another major setback for the young activists who led the 2011 Egyptian uprising, many of whom are now in prison or have withdrawn from politics. It likely will reinforce the perception that Mubarak’s autocratic state remains in place, albeit led by el-Sissi, the former military chief who later led the overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

But I doubt this will work. It will deepen the grievance and feeling of injustice felt by many young people,” Bahgat said by telephone from New York.

Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, expects the price to fall by another $5 or $10 a barrel before stopping. “It’s that kind of rout,” he said.

Overall, the slide is a boon for consumers in oil-importing regions like Asia, Europe and North America. But there are also some possible negatives.

The U.S. economy will receive an outsized benefit from lower oil prices because the U.S. is the world’s largest oil consumer.

NEW YORK — The crowds of bargain hunters that rush through U.S. store doors the day after the Thanksgiving holiday have thinned out.

U.S. shoppers spent $9.1 billion at stores on Black Friday, according to data out Saturday from research firm ShopperTrak. That’s a drop of 7 percent compared with the same day last year.

But it’s too early to call the holiday shopping season a dud, said Bill Martin, ShopperTrak’ s co-founder. Sales on Thursday, the Thanksgiving holiday, jumped 24 percent to $3.2 billion.

And overall sales for the two days are expected to slip half a percent to $12.29 billion. The figures don’t include online transactions.

For the second straight year, the report suggests that more people avoided the crowds on Black Friday by avoiding time at home on Thanksgiving Day. This year, many large retail stores decided to open their doors to eager shoppers for extended hours on the holiday.

“People are changing their behavior,” Martin said. “We’ve seen this for two years in a row now. Stores opening on Thanksgiving are simply eroding

sales from Black Friday.”

The popularity of shopping online has also lured people away from brickand-mortar stores. In a separate report out Saturday, IBM said online sales for Black Friday climbed 9.5 percent over the same day last year. More than one of every four transactions were made using a smartphone or tablet computer.

Some people saw no reason to rush to the stores before the weekend.

In Phoenix, Elaine Vanas and her daughter, Christine, were out picking up coats on Saturday, saying they disliked the long lines on Black Friday. At JC Penney, the two found a $50 house coat for Christine’s grandmother for $20, and bought another $200 coat for $20.

The National Retail Federation predicts that sales for the last two months of the year will hit $616.9 billion, an increase of 4.1 percent over the same period of 2013. On Saturday night, more than 100 protesters gathered near police headquarters, where they were outnumbers by officers, following the news. At least one person was arrested after a brief standoff with officers. But many seemed unfazed by the resignation. Several merely shrugged their shoulders when asked what they thought.

Brown, who was black, was unarmed when Wilson, who is white, fatally shot him in the middle of a Ferguson street, where his body was left for several hours as police investigated and angry onlookers gathered.

Some witnesses have said Brown had his hands up when Wilson shot him. Wilson told the grand jury that he feared for his life when Brown hit him and reached for his gun.

Wilson, who had been with the Ferguson Police Department for less than three years, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he decided to step down after the department told him it had received threats of violence if he remained on the force. “I’m not willing to let someone else get hurt because of me,” Wilson told the newspaper Saturday.

The U.S. Justice Department is conducting a civil rights investigation into the shooting and a separate investigation of police department practices.

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has asked the government to strip his wife’s family of their royally issued surname, the latest development in a high-profile crackdown that involves senior members of the police force. The move came after at least three relatives of the crown prince’s wife, Princess Srirasm, were arrested last week as part of the corruption probe.

The probe has attracted national attention in Thailand, where the private lives of the royal family are kept discreet. But many questions remain unanswered, primarily because of strict lese majeste laws that carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison for insulting the monarchy.

In a letter dated Friday but released over the weekend, the crown prince ordered the “cancellation of the royally bestowed family name ‘Akrapongpreecha,’” which was issued after the pair married in 2001. The brief letter, which was sent to the Interior Ministry, gave no explanation for the action. National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thavornsiri confirmed the letter’s authenticity.

Srirasm is the crown prince’s third wife and was last seen in public a week ago at a royal ceremony alongside her husband. They have a 9-year-old son, who is a presumed heir to the throne.

The crackdown has included the arrest of at least eight police officers, who face serious charges ranging from bribery and extortion to defaming the monarchy. Thailand’s police department has a reputation as one of the country’s most corrupt institutions.

The junta that has ruled the country since toppling an elected government on May 22 claims it is prioritizing the fight against corruption, but critics say graft remains institutionalized and the army’s real goal is to cripple political rivals led by self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup.

INDONESIA Rights groups slam parole for rights activist murderer Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Indonesian rights groups Saturday slammed the government’s decision to grant parole to the convicted murderer of a prominent human rights activist poisoned during a flight ten years ago.

Pollycarpus Priyanto was serving a 14 year jail term for killing Munir Said Thalib by arsenic poisoning on a national carrier Garuda flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Singapore in 2004.

Priyanto was granted parole on November 13 after eight years, said Marselina Budiningsih, the warden of Sukamiskin prison in Bandung, 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Jakarta.

The prison refused to disclose when he will be released.

Several rights groups “regretted” the decision to grant the parole in the high-profile murder case because even though involve-

ment of the State Intelligence Agency in the operation to kill Munir has been proven in court, the mastermind has not been punished.

In 2008, a court cleared a former deputy head of the country’s spy agency of masterminding the murder.

“The parole destroyed the sense of justice and democratisation in Indonesia,” said Choirul Anam, the lawyer of Munir’s wife.

An activist from the Human Rights Working Group, Rafendi Djamin, said parole should not have been granted due to the seriousness of the crime.

Munir, who was 38 when he was killed, was a prominent critic of military human rights abuses and provided legal counsel to victims of state violence during former dictator Suharto’s 32-year rule.

A former Garuda pilot, Priyanto’s sentence went back and forth before court.

An original 14 year jail term was reduced to two years, for falsifying a document related to the death, and he walked free in 2006.

Two years later, his sentence was extended to 20 years and then reduced again last year to 14 years.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has ordered officials to eat local street food at meetings instead of fancy foreign fare and stop holding lavish parties, the latest moves by the new government to crack down on bureaucratic excess.

Snacks such as cassava, steamed corn and yam cakes should be served at official gatherings and the number of guests invited to high-ranking bureaucrats’ parties should be limited to 400, a minister said.

President Joko Widodo, who took office last month and is known as a modest figure from a humble background, has made reining in official spending and trimming back the graftridden nation’s bloated bureaucracy a key goal.

He has already slashed travel and meeting budgets for next year, and last week sought to lead by example when he flew economy class to Singapore for his son’s graduation, winning widespread praise online.

Announcing the latest moves late Thursday, Yuddy Chrisnandi, minister for bureaucratic reform, ordered officials to “stop anything that is excessive”.

He said that gluttonous officials

were at risk of developing high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and that buying local snacks would help Indonesian farmers.

Chrisnandi said that the rules on food would be applied in all ministries and government offices from December 1. Those who broke them would face sanctions such as demotion or a postponement of bonus payments, he added.

The energy ministry, which is seeking to clean up its image following recent corruption scandals, has already sent out a list of permitted foods and has ordered drinks to be limited to coffee, tea and water.

The ban on lavish parties, due to come into effect early next year, is aimed at private functions held by high-ranking officials, which are often vast affairs at luxurious hotels.

Chrisnandi said such events “created an impression of inequality”.

“There are high-ranking government officials organising weddings for their children... inviting thousands, causing traffic jams.”

The moves echo an anti-corruption crackdown launched by China’s leader Xi Jinping after he came to power in late 2012, which included banning fancy fare from official banquets.

Murray outlines marriage plans as Manila lose again

MANILA - British number one Andy Murray hopes to marry Kim Sears next year after the former Wimbledon champion announced their engagement last week after nine years together. “We have a plan to get married next year, that’s the plan but no dates were set yet,” Murray told reporters in Manila on Sunday, where he is taking part in the new International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) team tournament.

Murray has yet to win a match in the Philippines after his team, the Manila Mavericks, went down against an Indian Aces side led by Roger Federer and Ana Ivanonic on Saturday.

The world number six lost his singles match to Gael Monfils 6-4 before teaming up with Maria Sharapova for the mixed doubles, in which they stumbled to a 6-1 defeat against doubles specialists Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza.

Murray, who also lost twice on Friday against the UAE Royals, said his team had struggled in their first matches in the tournament because “we’re not used to playing

this format”.

“We’re not used to being part of a team,” he added. “It’s been a good experience. We’ve had good fun and its been something completely different for the players.” Murray will return to court later on Sunday against women’s world number one Serena Williams’ Singapore Slammers team.

The 27-year-old Scot said the event in Manila hoped to draw more fans to professional tennis as some of the world’s best players visited an Asian city where no ATP and WTA tournaments were currently held.

“An event like this gives tennis fans in the Philippines an opportunity to come and watch some of the best players in the world and experience live tennis in a completely different format, a fun format,” he said. “It will good for tennis in the long term.”

Murray added that he would be spending the Christmas holidays with his family in Scotland before flying to Melbourne for the Australian Open in January.

The second leg of the IPTL will be played in Singapore next week before moving on to New Delhi and Dubai.

The 74-year-old three-time World Cup champion is receiving renal support treatment to help his kidneys filter waste products from the blood. He underwent surgery earlier this month to remove kidney stones.

According to a statement released by São Paulo’s Hospital Israelita Albert Ein-

stein, Pelé - often called the greatest soccer player in history - is “lucid, talking, and his respiratory and blood readings are stable.”

A treatment with antibiotics remained unaltered, the statement said. The renal treatment could be stopped early on Sunday, the hospital said in a separate statement.

Pelé, who was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has struggled with many health problems over the past decade. He has had emergency eye surgery for a detached retina and a hip replacement.

Known in Brazil as the “King of soccer,” he played in four World Cups and scored over 1,000 goals during his career.

PARIS — Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s penalty was enough to give Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 win over Nice on Saturday for its ninth straight win in all competitions, although coach Laurent Blanc lamented that his team’s performance was “very average.” Ibrahimovic continued his return to form with his second goal in a week to help a scrappy PSG stay within one point of French league leader Marseille.

“We’re hanging in there, we’re picking up points. We’ve won nine in a row, after all, and a lot of clubs would like to be in our position,” Blanc said. “We’re certainly very average in terms of how we’re playing, but in terms of points we’re doing pretty well. We could hide behind the win, but we’d also like to play better and we’re working on it.”

Ibrahimovic, who missed nearly two months of the season with a heel injury, slotted a penalty into the bottom corner in the 15th minute after Brazilian winger Lucas Moura had been bundled over. The Sweden star got PSG’s second of the game in a 3-1 win against Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“Without being brilliant, the first half was intense. We created chances, and we should have doubled our lead,” Blanc said. “We were very sloppy in the second half. We managed to hold on to our lead, which is really the only positive thing about the second half.” Ibrahimovic, the league’s top scorer for the past two seasons,

has scored six so far. He had not scored in the league since a hat trick against Saint-Etienne on Aug. 31.

Marseille beat Nantes 2-0 on Friday night and has 34 points after 15 games. The 33-year-old Ibrahimovic has scored an array of spectacular goals during a distinguished career and he almost added another. In the 10th minute, he took down a high ball with a superb piece of control and then clipped a first-time shot against the post. PSG is unbeaten in 21 games this season and has not lost since a 2-1 home defeat to Rennes on May 7.

However, after a bright start, this became another scrappy performance from a PSG side which regularly struggles to break teams down, despite boasting a glut of attacking talent. PSG faded in the second half and struggled to create a chance until Edinson Cavani headed over Serge Aurier’s cross in the 74th.

With Nice gaining in confidence, a draw seemed increasingly likely, and left back Jordan Amavi hit the post with a header from a free kick with 10 minutes to go.

“We finished the first half better and we started the second half better. It’s encouraging to have played well for 50 minutes, it’s a pity we weren’t rewarded,” Nice coach Claude Puel said. “We’re a bit frustrated, disappointed, because we wanted to get a point. Given the way the game went it would have been logical.”

Murray outlines marriage plans as Manila lose again

MANILA - British number one Andy Murray hopes to marry Kim Sears next year after the former Wimbledon champion announced their engagement last week after nine years together. “We have a plan to get married next year, that’s the plan but no dates were set yet,” Murray told reporters in Manila on Sunday, where he is taking part in the new International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) team tournament.

Murray has yet to win a match in the Philippines after his team, the Manila Mavericks, went down against an Indian Aces side led by Roger Federer and Ana Ivanonic on Saturday.

The world number six lost his singles match to Gael Monfils 6-4 before teaming up with Maria Sharapova for the mixed doubles, in which they stumbled to a 6-1 defeat against doubles specialists Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza.

Murray, who also lost twice on Friday against the UAE Royals, said his team had struggled in their first matches in the tournament because “we’re not used to playing

this format”.

“We’re not used to being part of a team,” he added. “It’s been a good experience. We’ve had good fun and its been something completely different for the players.” Murray will return to court later on Sunday against women’s world number one Serena Williams’ Singapore Slammers team.

The 27-year-old Scot said the event in Manila hoped to draw more fans to professional tennis as some of the world’s best players visited an Asian city where no ATP and WTA tournaments were currently held.

“An event like this gives tennis fans in the Philippines an opportunity to come and watch some of the best players in the world and experience live tennis in a completely different format, a fun format,” he said. “It will good for tennis in the long term.”

Murray added that he would be spending the Christmas holidays with his family in Scotland before flying to Melbourne for the Australian Open in January.

The second leg of the IPTL will be played in Singapore next week before moving on to New Delhi and Dubai.

Officer who shot Michael Brown resigns in Ferguson Associated Press Writer

FERGUSON, Missouri — Ferguson officials on Sunday planned to address the resignation of a police officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, as his parents prepared to attend a church service where civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton was scheduled to preach. Darren Wilson, who had been on administrative leave since the Aug. 9 shooting, resigned Saturday, effective immediately, according to his lawyer, Neil Bruntrager, who declined further comment.

An attorney for Brown’s family didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.

Ferguson officials planned to make a statement on Wilson’s resignation Sunday, said Stephanie Karr, city attorney for Ferguson. Karr earlier this week said Wilson had been on paid leave pending the outcome of an internal police investigation. “We were not after Wilson’s job,” Sharpton, who planned to preach Sunday at the St. Louis church where Brown’s funeral was held, said in a written statement. “We were after Michael Brown’s justice.” Brown’s parents were set to attend the Sunday service with Sharpton.

On Saturday night, more than 100 protesters gathered near police headquarters, where they were outnumbers by officers, following the news. At least one person was arrested after a brief standoff with officers. But many seemed unfazed by the resignation. Several merely shrugged their shoulders when asked what they thought.

Brown, who was black, was unarmed when Wilson, who is white, fatally shot him in the middle of a Ferguson street, where his body was left for several hours as police investigated and angry onlookers gathered.

Some witnesses have said Brown had his hands up when Wilson shot him. Wilson told the grand jury that he feared for his life when Brown hit him and reached for his gun.

Wilson, who had been with the Ferguson Police Department for less than three years, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he decided to step down after the department told him it had received threats of violence if he remained on the force. “I’m not willing to let someone else get hurt because of me,” Wilson told the newspaper Saturday.

The U.S. Justice Department is conducting a civil rights investigation into the shooting and a separate investigation of police department practices.

Thai crown prince strips wife’s kin of royal name Associated Press Writer

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has asked the government to strip his wife’s family of their royally issued surname, the latest development in a high-profile crackdown that involves senior members of the police force. The move came after at least three relatives of the crown prince’s wife, Princess Srirasm, were arrested last week as part of the corruption probe.

The probe has attracted national attention in Thailand, where the private lives of the royal family are kept discreet. But many questions remain unanswered, primarily because of strict lese majeste laws that carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison for insulting the monarchy.

In a letter dated Friday but released over the weekend, the crown prince ordered the “cancellation of the royally bestowed family name ‘Akrapongpreecha,’” which was issued after the pair married in 2001. The brief letter, which was sent to the Interior Ministry, gave no explanation for the action. National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thavornsiri confirmed the letter’s authenticity.

Srirasm is the crown prince’s third wife and was last seen in public a week ago at a royal ceremony alongside her husband. They have a 9-year-old son, who is a presumed heir to the throne.

The crackdown has included the arrest of at least eight police officers, who face serious charges ranging from bribery and extortion to defaming the monarchy. Thailand’s police department has a reputation as one of the country’s most corrupt institutions.

The junta that has ruled the country since toppling an elected government on May 22 claims it is prioritizing the fight against corruption, but critics say graft remains institutionalized and the army’s real goal is to cripple political rivals led by self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 coup.

INDONESIA Rights groups slam parole for rights activist murderer Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Indonesian rights groups Saturday slammed the government’s decision to grant parole to the convicted murderer of a prominent human rights activist poisoned during a flight ten years ago.

Pollycarpus Priyanto was serving a 14 year jail term for killing Munir Said Thalib by arsenic poisoning on a national carrier Garuda flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam via Singapore in 2004.

Priyanto was granted parole on November 13 after eight years, said Marselina Budiningsih, the warden of Sukamiskin prison in Bandung, 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of Jakarta.

The prison refused to disclose when he will be released.

Several rights groups “regretted” the decision to grant the parole in the high-profile murder case because even though involve-

ment of the State Intelligence Agency in the operation to kill Munir has been proven in court, the mastermind has not been punished.

In 2008, a court cleared a former deputy head of the country’s spy agency of masterminding the murder.

“The parole destroyed the sense of justice and democratisation in Indonesia,” said Choirul Anam, the lawyer of Munir’s wife.

An activist from the Human Rights Working Group, Rafendi Djamin, said parole should not have been granted due to the seriousness of the crime.

Munir, who was 38 when he was killed, was a prominent critic of military human rights abuses and provided legal counsel to victims of state violence during former dictator Suharto’s 32-year rule.

A former Garuda pilot, Priyanto’s sentence went back and forth before court.

An original 14 year jail term was reduced to two years, for falsifying a document related to the death, and he walked free in 2006.

Two years later, his sentence was extended to 20 years and then reduced again last year to 14 years.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has ordered officials to eat local street food at meetings instead of fancy foreign fare and stop holding lavish parties, the latest moves by the new government to crack down on bureaucratic excess.

Snacks such as cassava, steamed corn and yam cakes should be served at official gatherings and the number of guests invited to high-ranking bureaucrats’ parties should be limited to 400, a minister said.

President Joko Widodo, who took office last month and is known as a modest figure from a humble background, has made reining in official spending and trimming back the graftridden nation’s bloated bureaucracy a key goal.

He has already slashed travel and meeting budgets for next year, and last week sought to lead by example when he flew economy class to Singapore for his son’s graduation, winning widespread praise online.

Announcing the latest moves late Thursday, Yuddy Chrisnandi, minister for bureaucratic reform, ordered officials to “stop anything that is excessive”.

were at risk of developing high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and that buying local snacks would help Indonesian farmers.

Chrisnandi said that the rules on food would be applied in all ministries and government offices from December 1. Those who broke them would face sanctions such as demotion or a postponement of bonus payments, he added.

The energy ministry, which is seeking to clean up its image following recent corruption scandals, has already sent out a list of permitted foods and has ordered drinks to be limited to coffee, tea and water.

The ban on lavish parties, due to come into effect early next year, is aimed at private functions held by high-ranking officials, which are often vast affairs at luxurious hotels.

Chrisnandi said such events “created an impression of inequality”.

“There are high-ranking government officials organising weddings for their children... inviting thousands, causing traffic jams.”

The moves echo an anti-corruption crackdown launched by China’s leader Xi Jinping after he came to power in late 2012, which included banning fancy fare from official banquets.

Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, expects the price to fall by another $5 or $10 a barrel before stopping. “It’s that kind of rout,” he said.

Overall, the slide is a boon for consumers in oil-importing regions like Asia, Europe and North America. But there are also some possible negatives.

The U.S. economy will receive an outsized benefit from lower oil prices because the U.S. is the world’s largest oil consumer.

NEW YORK — The crowds of bargain hunters that rush through U.S. store doors the day after the Thanksgiving holiday have thinned out.

U.S. shoppers spent $9.1 billion at stores on Black Friday, according to data out Saturday from research firm ShopperTrak. That’s a drop of 7 percent compared with the same day last year.

But it’s too early to call the holiday shopping season a dud, said Bill Martin, ShopperTrak’ s co-founder. Sales on Thursday, the Thanksgiving holiday, jumped 24 percent to $3.2 billion.

And overall sales for the two days are expected to slip half a percent to $12.29 billion. The figures don’t include online transactions.

For the second straight year, the report suggests that more people avoided the crowds on Black Friday by avoiding time at home on Thanksgiving Day. This year, many large retail stores decided to open their doors to eager shoppers for extended hours on the holiday.

“People are changing their behavior,” Martin said. “We’ve seen this for two years in a row now. Stores opening on Thanksgiving are simply eroding

sales from Black Friday.”

The popularity of shopping online has also lured people away from brickand-mortar stores. In a separate report out Saturday, IBM said online sales for Black Friday climbed 9.5 percent over the same day last year. More than one of every four transactions were made using a smartphone or tablet computer.

Some people saw no reason to rush to the stores before the weekend.

In Phoenix, Elaine Vanas and her daughter, Christine, were out picking up coats on Saturday, saying they disliked the long lines on Black Friday. At JC Penney, the two found a $50 house coat for Christine’s grandmother for $20, and bought another $200 coat for $20.

Retail businesses have highs hopes for the holiday shopping season. The National Retail Federation predicts that sales for the last two months of the year will hit $616.9 billion, an increase of 4.1 percent over the same period of 2013. DENPASAR – The minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), A.A. Ngurah Puspayoga, created a breakthrough program by teaming up with notaries and the land deed maker (PPAT) in providing outreach and business development programs. With the MoU signed last November 21, the cooperative activists were expected to promptly submit their deed because the difficulties they had previously faced, have now been eliminated. In the MoU it was even agreed that the submission of establishment deeds would be free of charge “In addition to being free, the first 10 cooperatives to register will be given incentive funds worth IDR 2.5 million.

With such relations eased, Puspayoga hopes that notaries will become heroes for SMEs. “It is quite possible that notaries in Bali can pave

the way for SMEs,” he said.

The management of INI Bali, A.A. Ngurah Diatmika, said the MoU between the INI and the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs facilitated the establishment deed making for cooperatives and micro enterprise in Bali and the service would be provided free of charge.

In his ruling, judge Mahmoud alRashidi cited the “inadmissibility” of the case against Mubarak due to a technicality. earlier. After the decision, Cairo resident Nermine Fathy simply asked: “Who killed the martyrs? I want to know who killed the martyrs.”

That question likely won’t be answered in Egypt’s courts. Already, nearly 170 police officers and security officials put on trial in connection to the killings have either been acquitted for lack of evidence or were found to have acted in self-defense. Some received short, suspended sentences.

The Mubarak trial, however, was concerned only with the killing of 239 protesters whose names were cited in charge documents, not the nearly 900 killed in total during the 18 days of the revolt.

Saturday’s ruling marks another major setback for the young activists who led the 2011 Egyptian uprising, many of whom are now in prison or have withdrawn from politics. It likely will reinforce the perception that Mubarak’s autocratic state remains in place, albeit led by el-Sissi, the former military chief who later led the overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

It concludes Mubarak’s retrial along with his two sons, his secu-

rity chief Habib el-Adly and six top security commanders, who were all acquitted. Also acquitted was wealthy businessman Hussein Salem, a longtime Mubarak friend tried in absentia.

Hossam Bahgat, a prominent human rights advocate, said Saturday’s verdict would be used by the government to signal the end of the upheavals associated with the 2011 revolt.

“The regime’s message: It’s time to look forward, time to move on, time to focus on building the nation.

But I doubt this will work. It will deepen the grievance and feeling of injustice felt by many young people,” Bahgat said by telephone from New York.

The administration of Gaston Browne said in a statement Saturday that the appointment comes after De Niro signed a memorandum of agreement on Friday for a $250 million hotel investment in Barbuda.

Officials said De Niro and Australian businessman James Packer will help renovate and expand a former five-star luxury resort that closed several years ago.

Browne said he expects the deal to be signed late next month and for construction to begin in the next 12 months. He said De Niro will help attract more investment and American celebrities to Antigua & Barbuda as special economic envoy.

ISTANBUL - The Hagia Sophia, which the pope visits Sunday on his tour of Istanbul, has in the course of some 15 centuries of its history served as a church, a mosque and now a museum but still inflames passions.

Its status as a secular museum open to all allows believers of all faiths to enjoy its astonishing architecture. But periodic calls in the last years for it to serve again as a mosque have caused anger among Christians.

The great building was constructed in the sixth century as a church in the Christian Byzantine Empire, although a church had stood on the site at the confluence of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus since the fourth century.

It was the seat of the Patriarchate of Constantinople -- the name of the city until it was officially changed to Istanbul in the twentieth century.

The Hagia Sophia played a crucial role in the schism between the eastern and western Christian Churches in 1054, when a cardinal of Rome laid on its altar a bill excommunication the Patriarch

Michael I, sparking the split that continues to this day.

It was badly damaged in the notorious sacking of Constantinople by the crusaders in 1204 and briefly served as a Roman Catholic Cathedral before being reconsecrated as a Greek Orthodox church half a century later after the Byzantine recapture of the city.

When the Ottoman armies under Mehmet II conquered the city in 1453 he ordered the immediate conversion of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Islamic minarets were built around its Byzantine dome.

It served as a mosque until after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire when in the mid 1930s the authorities of the new Turkish state under secular leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk ordered it to become a museum for all.

But under the rule of the Islam-

ic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), co-founded by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan which came to power in 2002, there have been noises about reconverting the Hagia Sophia into a mosque.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc caused a furore in November 2013 when he indicated that he hoped to change the status of the Hagia Sophia.

“We are looking at a sad Hagia Sophia, but hopefully we will see it smiling again soon,” Arinc said, describing the complex as the “Hagia Sophia Mosque”.

Greece reacted furiously, saying such statements “are offending the religious feeling of millions of Christians.”

The Turkish government has long been accused by its secular opponents of forcing Islamic values on the predominantly Muslim but strictly secular country.

The congress is scheduled at 8pm at Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Nusa Dua in the Badung district and is attended

Some 40 proposals were being considered this week by the Parisbased UN cultural agency as meriting a place on the list of “intangible cultural heritage”, from the Arirang folk songs of Korea to Armenia’s traditional Lavash bread.

Japan’s traditional hand-made Washi paper along with Burundi’s ritual dance of the royal drum too were among 18 traditions or cultural practices added to the prestigious list aimed at protecting endangered traditions.

“It may be a drop in the ocean but we are moving ahead bit by bit. Countries are realising that their heritage is important to all of humanity,” Cecile Duvelle, who runs UNESCO’s intangible heritage section told AFP. She said the list was “about identity not tourism.”

Brazil’s Capoeira, which is a fight and also a dance, was chosen because “it also functions as an affirmation of mutual respect between communities.”

Chile’s Bailes Chinos, a brotherhood of musicians who dance, sing and make music, “function as a model for social integration and cohesion,” UNESCO said.

BANGLI – The Batur caldera region in Kintamani is prone to avalanches, especially during heavy rains, which have been hitting Bangli over the past few days. In anticipation of such a disaster, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli has re-issued a circular on disaster awareness.

Chief Executive of the BPBD Bangli, Wayan Sugiarta, confirmed on Friday (Nov 28) that the government regularly distributes the circular on disasters preparedness during the rainy season. The circular is addressed to the disaster mitigation agency, the military and police authorities, and also to heads of the community. In the document, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli asks the entire community to be alert to various disasters that tend to occur during heavy rains. “Basically, we remind the community and village authorities to be careful and vigilant against various disasters during rainy season,” said Sugiarta.

Other than issuing the circular, his party had also mapped the avalanche points in Bangli County. To map the region, his party was assisted by a team of geology experts and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of the province of Bali.

According to the avalanche mapping, the areas at risk are divided into three levels, namely the heavy, medium and light risk of avalanche. The regions with a high risk of avalanche are spread across the subdistrict of Kintamani such as along the Batur caldera and some villages in the northern region of Kintamani including Subaya. For the region of Bangli, Susut and Tembuku have a light risk of avalanche.

To further strengthen public awareness, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Bangli regularly disseminates disaster alerts to villages. In addition to awareness campaigns, his party also continues to intensify training on the handling of avalanche occurances. As a result, when disaster strikes, everyone knows what to do. (ina)

Buleleng ready to send apprentice to Japan

SINGARAJA - Changes in lifestyle and the needs of the community make land conversion unavoidable. This is a reality in different regions of Bali, and Buleleng County is no exception. By and large, farmers do not feel the need to convert arable land into residential buildings in part because they do not have the authority to do so as few farmers in Buleleng own their land- most are sharecroppers.

Bali Post Landowners are the ones who have full rights to manage or sell their land.

The Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said, that when agricultural land no longer produces profits, land-owners often tend to transform their agricultural land into rental shops or other productive buildings.

“As we can see, landowners prefer building shops to farming. They rent these shops, usually by yearly contract. Of course, this is very tempting because it immediately results in profits,” he said.

The agency was still waiting for

the implementation of the Regional Bylaw on Spatial Plan (RTRW) for Buleleng, drafted in 2013. Once the regional bylaw had been issued, it is expected to reduce real estate development and help to maintain agricultural land. Based on the data at the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency for 1992-2012, land conversion reached 1,103 hectares, or approximately 10 percent of the total agricultural land in Buleleng, namely 11,039 hectares.

Some areas in Buleleng have un-

dergone high rates of land conversion such as in Seririt, Banjar and Sawan.

Most of the lands were converted from farming into residential or for housing purposes. “Most land conversions are intended for residential purposes. However this is not always the case as we saw when several hectares of paddy fields were converted into vineyard, as is often happening in Banjar subdistrict. Many residents have switched professions becoming grape growers as this is considered a promising field.” he said. (kmb34)

The Head of the Manpower and Resettlement Agency, Ni Made Dwi Priyanti Putri Koriawan, said on Friday (Nov 28) that through the potential manpower of Buleleng has been given another chance to work overseas in 2015.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

LOS ANGELES - “Star Wars” fans got their first glimpse Friday of the space saga’s long-awaited new film -- including a controversial new-look lightsaber -- but still have to wait a year for the movie itself. ships are back.

The Millennium Falcon, the famed spaceship of smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his hairy first mate Chewbacca, is seen looping and skimming a planet, preparing for combat with the Empire’s TIE fighters.

The X-wing fighters of the Rebel Alliance are also seen.

“Star Wars” has attracted generations of loyal fans ever since the first film arrived in 1977 recounting the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Solo and Darth Vader.

Filming began in Britain in May on Episode VII. Original cast members Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will star in the new film, along with several newcomers including Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o.

Other cast members include veteran actor Max von Sydow, “Girls” star Adam Driver, motion-capture expert Andy Serkis and “Harry Potter” veteran Domhnall Gleeson.

The new trailer did not include footage of any of the main veteran characters, but did include glimpses of new British cast member John Boyega, clad as a Stormtrooper and racing across a desert landscape.

Filming on the new movie was not without hiccups: in June, the 72-year-old Ford broke his leg on the set when a garage door fell and hit him at Pinewood Studios outside London.

Ford is back as smuggler Solo, the 62-year-old Hamill will return as Jedi Knight Skywalker and Fisher, 57, reprises the role of Princess Leia.

The movie’s screenplay is written by J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote two previous “Star Wars” films.

The film is produced by Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams, and Bryan Burk, while multiple Oscar-winner Williams returns as the soundtrack composer.

The original 1977-83 trilogy -- “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi -- “ was followed by a prequel trilogy between 1999 and 2005: “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.”

The two previous trilogies inspired spin-off books, comics, toys, videogames and cartoons -- earning $4.4 billion.

Disney shelled out $4 billion to buy “Star Wars” founder George Lucas’s Lucasfilm in October 2012.

Madonna launched children’s hospital in Malawi

BLANTYRE, Malawi — Madonna is in the African country of Malawi for the first time since she had a falling out with the former president last year.

Madonna on Thursday launched a 50-bed pediatrics ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in the commercial capital Blantyre. Sarah Ezzy, director of the charity Raising Malawi, said the new facility is the first dedicated pediatric intensive

care unit in the country.

Former Malawi President Joyce Banda had stripped Madonna of her VIP status last year by forcing the singer to check into her private jet as an ordinary passenger. New President Peter Mutharika has restored the singer’s VIP status.

The president’s spokesman said the country appreciates Madonna’s charity work. Madonna helps fund a number of charities — including orphanages, schools and medical facilities — in Malawi.

Studio giant Disney earlier this month revealed the name of the new episode, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” saying filming had been completed on the movie, due in theaters on December 18, 2015.

“The dark side ... and the light,” the voiceover continues, as a cloaked figure -- perhaps a dark Sith Lord -- brandishes his lightsaber in a snowy forest, before John Williams’ stirring theme plays.

Inevitably, “Star Wars” fans immediately flooded the Internet with comments, observations -and speculation.

Many seemed split about the new design of the lightsaber, which had flaming laser beams coming out the handle in what looked like some sort of handguard.
