Pagerwesi Day for the residents of Singaraja City in northern Bali and surrounding areas poses a special holiday. Compared to other regions in Bali, Pagerwesi in Singaraja is indeed far more lively and vibrant, the same as festivity of Galungan. It also happened on Pagerwesi Day celebration on Wednesday (Sep 29). Hilarity had been apparent since 5:00 a.m. Local Time. Aside from putting various offerings in shrines within the house compound, devotees also came out to deliver their offerings to the temple outside the home. The spectacle was always interesting as devotees did not only deliver the offerings to village trinity temples, but also deliver offerings exuberantly to the grave. Therefore, in the celebration of Pagerwesi last Wednesday, it was not only the temple looking crowded. A number of graves downtown Singaraja, Buleleng and Banyuasri, also looked to be cheered by the offerings, and families put on full traditional attires. Even, the crowds at the cemetery had started when the sun did not rise yet. A resident of the Bale Agung, Buleleng, Gede Pastika, said the procession to put offerings to the grave had become a tradition for the people of Singaraja and surrounding areas. Such a procession was not only carried out on each Pagerwesi festivity, but also performed on other holidays such as Galungan and Kuningan. However, the

activity on Pagerwesi Day did look more crowded than any other holidays. The offerings presentation to the grave is usually done by a family still having family members who died and was buried but had not been cremated or performed Ngaben ceremony. Such ceremonial offerings mean that the family members who had died would not become buta cuil (evil spirit) and disturb the surviving family. One thing making the cemetery livelier than ever is that people presenting the offerings also have meal together at the cemetery area. After the sunrise until daytime, residents appeared in droves to say prayers at grand temples, like Jagatnatha Temple. Then, in the afternoon, residents visited some tourist objects such as Penimbangan Beach, Lovina, Kerobokan, Buleleng Harbor and others. In Buleleng Regency, Pagerwesi is celebrated grandiosely every 210 days. Pagerwesi celebration is greeted with joy by people of Buleleng by worship held since early in the morning. As consequence, activity of Buleleng residents totally comes to standstill for the whole day. Tradi-

tional markets and shops including the office of government and private company are closed. Based on observation last Wednesday, business activities in major markets downtown Singaraja was truly deserted. Kiosks and stores were closed and so were street side traders. However, the ambience of market still looked crowded by passing traders that said prayers at Melanting Temple or profession temple for traders. “Initially, I was going to open but all other traders were close due to Pagerwesi, so I decided to cancel it as no buyers will come,” said a shoe merchant. Similar atmosphere were also visible at Banyuasri Market. This Buleleng’s second largest market since Tuesday (Sep 28) afternoon had been deserted from activities of traders. No traders opened their businesses. On that feast day, traders only said prayers at the temple located not so far from the market area. In addition, traders also put offerings in their kiosks and stalls. “Today we close for the whole day and tomorrow (Sep 30) morning will open as usual,” said a security officer of Banyuasri Market. Tourism Competitiveness Rankings Does Not Affect Foreign Tourists Visits Jakarta (Bali Post) –

The Culture and Tourism Ministry confirmed that the tourism competitiveness rankings of the entire world’s countries done by some survey institutions don’t affect the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia. “The rankings done connecting to the tourism competitiveness last year placed Indonesia on the 81st position from 133 countries does not mean foreign tourist visits to decrease,” the Ministry’s Kapuslitbang, Henky Hermantoro, responded to the Bali post news (25/9) on Wednesday (29/9). Henky thinks it is normal whoever with certain criteria they made to make such rankings towards tourism competitiveness of a country. The two world institutions who made it specially which are World Economic Forum (WEF) and World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Henky clarified, that rankings will not have a straight affect to the number of foreign tourists coming to In-

Implementation of the Health Insurance program Bali Mandara (JKBM) was positively responded by the people of Bali. Since launch in January 2010, this program has been successfully providing services in the health sector to more than half a million people of Bali. Until 28 September 2010 and then, there were 539. 501 patients who were treated either in hospital or clinic use JKBM facilities. Meanwhile, the total funds absorbed or spent to serve half a million more patients had reached Rp 52.348.108.709. Amlapura (Bali Post) – The traditional water barrier/dam in banjar dinas Kauhan, Manggis, Karangasem, collapsed due to the heavy rain and caused flash flood a few days ago. The damaged dam also caused farmers of the subak (irrigation) around it confused as their three weeks paddies are now threaten to fail harvest. Subak official Sekeha Gede, Dewa Putu, stated on Wednesday (29/9) in Manggis that the traditional dam that is made of stones has been built long ago by the farmers themselves. This work was done in togetherness to irrigate the dozen hectares of paddy fields. It is suspected because it’s made this way and already old, the soil became labile and not strong anymore in defending floods. The damage was as long as six meters and height three meters. Since the damage, practically the paddy fields of 26 farmers couldn’t get any water for irrigation when actually when paddies are three weeks old it needs quite amount of water. Dewa Putu hoped government will give disaster help connecting to build the dam again so it’s permanent, much stronger to defend floods as farmers there don’t think can build it their own anymore as their income only can be used for their families. Meanwhile, another banjar official Dewa Putu Singarsa, SP, MSi, hoped the same thing, as an official who

graduated from the Udayana University Agriculture Faculty, he does know the condition of the residents who are farmers. Lately the cost of paddy production is high yet the rice trading wasn’t that good. Most HIV transmissions today pass through unprotected heterosexual relations. As has been known, one of the ways of HIV transmission can be through semen or vaginal fluids other than through blood. Even though the data recorded are not as much as the heterosexual factors, the risk factors of gay or homosexual in Bali started to increase. According to data from the Bali Health Services, HIV patients belonging to gay risk factor group in 2010 amounted to approximately 4.92 percent of the total risk factor. Based on the data of voluntary counseling and testing or VCT Merpati in Wangaya Hospital throughout 2010 until August, the risk factor of positive HIV was found five infected persons and one of them was a transvestite. Meanwhile, Program Manager of HIV/AIDS and sexual transmitted disease (STD) of Bali Health Services, Gde Agus Suryadinata, said there was small possibility of the risk factor to gays because its case was indeed a little or not all cases were found. “By and large, the gays tend to be more extroverted in their communities. Therefore, not many of them came to the clinic for VCT services. They prefer to come to existing foundation belonging to their communities,” said Agus. In general, it was not just the risk factor of gays that increased. According to

Agus, all risk factors increased, too. Based on data from Gaya Dewata Foundation handling the HIV cases of gay community, from 2008 to 2010 the cases tended to increase at least threefold. According to Director of Gaya Dewata, Christian Supriyadinata, in 2008 out of 150 gays taking an HIV test about 6 percent were stated positive. In 2010, the number of gay tested for HIV increased to 170 and about 18 percent of them were positive. Furthermore, Christian said the transmission of HIV/AIDS on gay risk factors also occurred through sexual intercourse. However, they did it differently namely through anal or oral sex. If through the rectum, in case of injury due to friction, HIV virus carried by genital secretions could enter through the wound and so did the oral sex. Regarding to the stigma about those living with HIV, according to Agus, many people had negative views about the patient. “In reality, there are many people already knowing about the flows of HIV transmission, but if people living with HIV close to them, the negative stigma remains to exist,” said Agus. This condition caused that HIV patients were unable to open themselves to community concerning with their condition. The photo of Kim Jong-Un was taken after the ruling party’s highest-level meeting for 30 years, which bestowed powerful posts on him in a clear sign he was being groomed for the next dynastic succession in the communist state. The Republican Whitman — who on the campaign trail has called for tougher sanctions against employers who hire illegal workers — said the allegations amounted to a baseless stunt. She said she was not aware the housekeeper, Nicky Diaz Santillan, was in the U.S. illegally until the woman volunteered the information in 2009, after which Whitman fired her. A mudslide killed at least 16 people and left four missing in the village of Reforma in Mexico’s southernmost Chiapas state, according to a state official. “Their bodies have been recovered. There are eight children and eight adults,” state public works chief Guillermo Castellanos said. Civil protection workers and state governor Juan Sabines were on scene as the search for the missing continued, Castellanos added. A separate mudslide in Chiapas state was reported earlier in the village of Nueva Colombia. A woman and two children were missing there, officials said. Chiapas, bordering Guatemala to the south, and Oaxaca to the west, is among Mexico’s poorest states, and has been among the hardest hit by record rainfalls in recent months. In the waterlogged Oaxaca mountain hamlet of Santa Maria Tlahuiltoltepec, a tiny town of 10,000, local health secretary Eduardo Hernandez was among the missing along with his family. Community - Based Conservation in Bali It is generally accepted that each nation of the world, have their own history, which depends on the local situation and condition, as proved by their archeological and historical remains. In this connection, Indonesia for example, has so many interesting monuments, which could be found nearly in the whole of the archipelago namely in Sumatera, Java, Bali, Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesian Island. Among them are belonged to prehistoric and historic period, which consist of movable and immovable monuments, and made of tangible and intangible material. Based on the function when the monuments were discovered, our monuments could be classified into two groups namely the dead monuments, which were not used any more by local people. The second one is the living monuments, which until now is still used for religious purpose by the local people as seen in Bali. It is a matter of facts that only a very few of our monuments have been removed to the government museum to protect them from further deterioration. The facts mean that most of them are still in its original places, standing alone struggle against all kind of dangers,

which are coming from environment and human activities. Indonesian governments are aware to protect our archaeological remains, because of its values for: 1). Reconstructing our national from the very early time covering the live of our ancestors; 2). Increasing and strengthening our cultural identity as the basic foundation for our development plans facing the forthcoming modern world; 3). Increasing cultural appreciation and responsibility for the young generations through the education systems; 4). Supporting cultural tourism and cultural diplomacy to build up a peaceful world based on cultural understanding. It should be very easy to understand that not any nations would like to lose their national cultural roots and so it is a national task to protect the archaeological heritage. This important task is not only because of its value as mentioned above, but actually also due to a number of factors which could damage the monuments, namely: 1). The very old age of the monuments; 2). The natural effect such as climate, humidity, etc; 3). Human activities e.g. graffiti, vandalism, illegal excavation etc; 4). Modernization, industrialization and

development project; 5). Tourism facilities etc Now it should be very clear that any archaeological protection trough preservation and conservation should be regarded: 1). To protect the monuments as a national cultural property bearing national pride; 2). To protect the archeological environment for keeping the beauty and the attractions of the monuments as a unity of ecosystems; 3). To keep the cultural values of the monuments in their people mind forever. Facing the problem of archeological protections in Indonesia, the Dutch have issued Monuments Ordinance (Monumenten Ordonnantie, Stb. No. 238, 1931), which is not suitable any more for us, and then recently our government have declared the new one called Law Concerning Items of Cultural Property (Undang- undang No.5, 1992 tentang Benda Cagar Budaya). In our modern world today, not any nations would like to sacrifice their culture, because it is very natural to have the national spirit, which have been built through a very long history. (Pork Cooked in Soya Sauce) Though Indonesia is an Islamic country, there is some pork available. It is hard to find and most restaurants don’t serve it because any restaurant that cooks pork would have to have completely separate facilities and equipment to prepare it or the restaurant would not be considered halal (clean). Ingredients o 1/2 kg (1 1/4 lb) fillet of pork -or leg of pork o 1 tb Clear soya sauce o 2 tb Plain flour o 1/2 ts Powdered ginger o 20 g (4 oz) button mushrooms o 4 Cloves garlic o 1 sl of root ginger, about 2 cm -(1") across and 1/2 cm -(1/4") thick o 3 tb Dark soya sauce o Pepper or a pinch of chilli -powder o 2 tb water o 2 tb Medium dry sherry or rice -wine (optional) o 2 ts Lemon juice o 6 tb Oil or pork fat Directions This, as its name suggests, is pork cooked in soya sauce. It is a particular favourite with my own husband and children, who always know when it is about to appear on the table because the ginger and garlic frying in the sauce smell so deliciously savoury. Cut the pork into small cubes. Put the flour into a bowl and add the clear soya sauce and ginger powder, mixing them well together. Coat the pork with the mixture and then let it stand for at least 30 minutes. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Peel the garlic and ginger and slice them very thin; you can use these thin slices as they are, or cut them again into very tiny sticks. Heat the oil or fat in a wok or thick frying pan and fry the meat, half of it at a time, turning it from time to time, for 5 minutes. Repeat the process for the remaining half of the meat. The flour that coated the meat will tend to stay in the pan or stick to the bottom of it, but leave it there-it will thicken the sauce later. Now take most of the oil out of the pan, leaving only about two tablespoons which you then heat again. In this, fry the tiny slices of garlic and ginger and the mushrooms, stirring continuously, for i minute. Add the soya sauce, the water and the meat. mix well, season with pepper or chilli powder, and stir continuously for 1 or 2 minutes. just before serving, add the sherry or rice wine and the lemon juice. Serve hot.

BEIJING - China on Thursday rejected US legislation seeking to punish Beijing for allegedly manipulating its currency, warning that pressure on the yuan issue could “severely damage” trade ties. Beijing also said the bill — overwhelmingly approved by the US House of Representatives on Wednesday — violates World Trade Organisation rules, and insisted it has not deliberately undervalued its currency. Angry US lawmakers, who accuse Beijing of keeping the value of the yuan artificially low to give its exporters an unfair competitive edge, blamed the weak yuan for the loss of US jobs, just weeks ahead of key midterm elections. “We firmly oppose the US Congress approving these bills,” Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters. “Exercising protectionism against China under the excuse of the renminbi exchange rate will only severely damage China-US trade and economic ties and have a negative impact on the two countries’ economies and the world economy.” The legislation was passed even as the United States announced a resumption of military ties with China after a 10-month break, saying the two powers both wanted to avoid miscalculations in an increasingly tense region. In Beijing, commerce ministry spokesman Yao Jian said the US bill was “inconsistent with relevant rules of the World Trade Organisation to conduct an anti-subsidy investigation based on exchange rate reasons”. “China has never undervalued its currency in order to gain a competitive advantage. The US cannot use its trade deficit with China as an excuse to adopt trade protectionist measures,” Yao said, state media reported.

The House bill calls on the US government to consider Beijing’s currency policy as an improper trade subsidy, and expands the powers of the Commerce Department by allowing it to slap retaliatory tariffs on Chinese goods. The chamber passed the bill by a 348-79 margin, one of its strongest showings against China in years, fuelled by voter anger at the struggling economy and joblessness near 10 percent ahead of November 2 elections. Some critics say the yuan could be undervalued by as much as 40 percent. “The US-China relationship is an important one in every way — culturally, politically, diplomatically, economically, commercially — but we need to have them play by the rules,” said Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The US Senate has signalled it will take up a companion bill after the elections, but the legislation’s fate is unclear and President Barack Obama has not formally taken a position on whether he supports it. Ahead of the vote, Obama said at a campaign-style event in Iowa that the yuan was “undervalued” and was “a contributing factor” to the yawning US trade deficit with China — the world’s second biggest economcy. “People generally think that they are managing their currency in ways that make our goods more expensive to sell and their goods cheaper to sell here,” he said. China pledged in June to loosen its grip on the yuan, which had been effectively pegged at about 6.8 to the

dollar since mid-2008. Since then, the currency has gained less than two percent against the greenback. The central bank on Thursday set the central parity rate — the middle of the allowed trading band for the currency — at 6.7011 to the dollar. The yuan can move up or down 0.5 percent from that rate during the trading day. That was weaker than the 6.6936 rate set Wednesday, which was the strongest against the greenback since June’s pledge. Last week, before meeting Obama, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao rejected a drastic appreciation of the yuan, warning that it would cause Chinese companies to go bankrupt and workers to lose their jobs. Ahead of the House vote, China’s central bank issued a statement pledging to increase the flexibility of the yuan and “gradually improve the exchange rate setting mechanism” — near-identical to the wording it used in June. A group representing US businesses in China criticised the bill, saying it puts thousands of American jobs in export-related industries at risk and would not spur growth in the world’s biggest economy. “Blaming China won’t help the US economy but this legislation may cost American jobs,” John Watkins, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, said in a statement. “We call on the US Senate to thoroughly review the proposed legislation and we hope it does not move forward in the legislative process.”

recent corporate optimism expected to fade. The trade ministry said Thursday that August shipments were off 0.5 percent on-month, while inventories rose 0.7 percent. It expects production to fall 0.1 percent in September and 2.9 percent in October. “A recovery in the world economy is slowing down while the strong yen is hurting (Japanese) exports. There are problems at home and abroad,” said Hiroshi Watanabe, economist at Daiwa Institute of Research. “The expected production fall for October is deep. Activity will shrink from late in the year to early next year,” he said. Japan’s strong domestic currency also makes imports cheaper, helping prolong a damaging deflationary cycle where consumers hold off on purchases in the hope of further price drops, clouding future corporate investment. The number of people seeking work fell by a seasonally-adjusted 40,000 to 3.031 million people, the federal labor office said. Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a more modest decline of 20,000. German unemployment stood at an unadjusted 7.6 percent in August and the level in September marked the 15th consecutive monthly decline. On Tuesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel forecast the number of unemployed would possibly

fall below three million by the end of the year. “We may get to three million or perhaps slightly below,” Merkel said after the economic research group GfK said the country’s consumer climate was at a three year high, largely as a result of improvements in the labor market. The labor office said the strong decline was the result of “the economic recovery and a typical surge in the fall” when young graduates often begin working. During the global economic downturn, the German government subsidized shorter working hours to help companies pull through, but most have now put staff back on full-time hours. Earlier on Thursday meanwhile, the IG Metall trade union said it has accepted a 3.6 percent wage increase for around 100,000 workers in the steel sector a deal that is to run until October 31, 2011. WASHINGTON - Actor Tony Curtis, best known for his comedic turn as a cross-dressing musician in “Some Like It Hot,” has died at the age of 85, US media reported Thursday, citing his family. A representative for Curtis’ daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, confirmed his death to Entertainment Tonight, the television program said on its website. ABC News also reported the death. The Bronx-born Curtis was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in “The Defiant Ones” with Sidney Poitier, but he was best remembered as Marilyn Monroe’s cross-dressing paramour in the 1959 Billy Wilder classic “Some Like It Hot.” Curtis’s life could have come straight from one of his Hollywood scripts: rising from the streets of the Bronx to become a matinee idol who boasted of sleeping with 1,000 women. He will be remembered as much for the off-screen dalliances as for acting performaces that never perhaps won the critical acclaim and respect from his peers that he sought. A string of hits alongside Burt Lancaster in the late 1950s, including “Trapeze” and “Sweet Smell of Success,” transformed the son of poor Hungarian immigrants into one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood. Curtis received his only Oscar nomination for the 1958 film “The Defiant Ones” in which he and Sidney Poitier play prison inmates who break out and spend most of the story chained together by handcuffs. Curtis insisted his black co-star receive double billing — a racial breakthrough at the time. Known for his thick crop of black hair, he became such a megastar that his raffish quiff was adopted by Elvis Presley — suddenly everyone wanted what barbers knew as a “Tony Curtis.” The eldest

child of Jewish immigrants, Curtis was born on June 3, 1925 and grew up in the back of his father’s tailor shop. His parents were so poor that he and brother Julius were briefly dispatched to an orphanage. In his frank 2008 autobiography “American Prince: A Memoir,” Curtis laid bare that poverty-stricken Bronx upbringing, detailing the physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his mother who was later diagnosed with schizophrenia. In 1938, Julius died after being hit by a truck. Family tragedy would also haunt Curtis later in life when his son Nicholas died of a heroin overdose at the age of 23. Curtis enlisted at 16 in the Marines and ended up as a crewman on a submarine, witnessing at close-hand the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay in 1945. He later revealed he had been immitating his on-screen hero Cary Grant after watching him in the submarine war film “Destination Tokyo”. After earning an honorable discharge, Curtis enrolled in acting school and began playing stage roles until film producer David Selznick spotted the young talent. Bit-parts paid the bills until Curtis, who by this time had dispensed of his given name Bernard Schwartz, got his break with a major role in the 1950 action-western “Sierra.” In a 2008 interview with AFP at his art studio overlooking the Las Vegas Strip skyline, Curtis described his dramatic sex-soaked ascent to Hollywood stardom as well as a traumatic decline and descent into cocaine addiction. “I don’t feel like I got the movies I should’ve gotten,” said Curtis, who felt he was denied meaty roles that went to contemporaries Marlon Brando and Paul Newman. “I felt I deserved more than that the industry had given me. He also acknowledged he may have been addicted to sex. “I realized if I could mount a girl — and that sounds very cruel and very bestial but examine it for what it is — a woman has accepted me.

The “Anderson Cooper 360” host is deep in talks with Telepictures Productions and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for a program that would be pitched to stations in the next couple of weeks targeted to launch in fall 2011. The as-yet-untitled project will not have a hard-news focus, though given Cooper’s background, he’ll likely bring a more journalistic approach to handling popular topics compared to most daytime fare. The show is billed as a topical for-

mat that will cover everything from celebrities and pop culture to social issues and wide-interest news stories. The talk show deal is complex because its being coordinated among Cooper, and Time Warner siblings Warner Bros. and CNN, which has an exclusive contract with the newsman. The deal, which has been in talks for more than a month and may close by the end of the week, calls for Cooper to continue hosting “360.” With a lot of moving parts at play, however, sources caution the deal is not yet a sure thing. WASHINGTON – Astronomers say they have for the first time spotted a planet beyond our own in what is sometimes called the Goldilocks zone for life: Not too hot, not too cold. Juuuust right. Not too far from its star, not too close. So it could contain liquid water. The planet itself is neither too big nor too small for the proper surface, gravity and atmosphere. It’s just right. Just like Earth. “This really is the first Goldilocks planet,” said co-discoverer R. Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The new planet sits smack in the middle of what astronomers refer to as the habitable zone, unlike any of the nearly 500 other planets astronomers have found outside our solar system. And it is in our galactic neighborhood, suggesting that plenty of Earth-like planets circle other stars. Finding a planet that could potentially support life is a major step toward answering the timeless question: Are we alone? Scientists have jumped the gun before on proclaiming that planets out-

WAGRAIN - Sixty-one-yearold Uwe Kliemt jumps up from the grand piano to perform a minuet step: “See how speed masks the work’s true character?” he asks the audience. “Only when I slow down, can I truly hear it. Only then does it touch me.” Night has fallen on the small Austrian ski resort of Wagrain, nestled deep in a valley ringed by mountains. The hourly toll of church bells is the only sound to disturb the silence of the moonlit night. Kliemt, a musicologist from Hamburg in Germany with salt and pepper beard and piercing blue eyes, is one of dozens of thinkers and businessmen gathered here for the annual meeting of the “Society for the Deceleration of Time.” For him, speed in classical music, he says, has become “a dogma to the detriment of the beauty and meaning of the original works.” And that is why, he says, he “refuses to give in to the cult of speed, which so many people associate with virtuosity in music.” Born 20 years ago at Austria’s Klagenfurt University, the think tank now boasts 700 members in Europe, North and South America: academics and artists but also entrepreneurs, therapists, lawyers and even politicians. All are convinced that the speeding-up of our

way of life is shaping the future of mankind, and that it is urgent to turn back the clock. Each in their own lives has worked to slow down, in order to “rethink our skewed relationship with time” and “rediscover a happy, meaningful life,” says the society’s chairman, Munich lawyer Erwin Heller. “Ask the question: what will I remember two years from now of the week I have just lived through, and most people will say ‘nothing’,” says Imre Marton Remenyi, a psychotherapist, teacher and sexologist. “We should spend at least two hours a day doing things we really enjoy — and that is also true for sex,” he adds. Schiavone squeezes through to Pan Pacific semis Agence France Presse

TOKYO - Fifth seed Francesca Schiavone took over three hours to beat Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in the quarter-finals at the Pan Pacific Open women’s tennis tournament on Thursday. The French Open champion, ranked eighth in the world, had to come back from a service break down in the first two sets before scoring a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Kanepi, the world number 25. Top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark progressed after Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland abandoned the match at 5-0, while eighth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus made quick work of American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe, 6-2, 6-1. Schiavone, going down 1-3 in the first set, had to save two set points at 4-5 in the 10th game before winning three games in a row to take the set when Kanepi hit a backhand into the net. The Italian, 30, again fell behind in the second set, but pulled off a timely break in the ninth game, only to see Kanepi break back in the following game thanks to a backhand error by the Italian. The two women traded breaks three times in the final set to tie at 5-5, before Kanepi committed a double fault on an advantage point for Schiavone in the following game to go down 5-6. NEWPORT Colin Montgomerie has sought advice from Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as he attempts to mastermind a European victory at the 38th Ryder Cup. Montgomerie told French daily Le Figaro in an interview Thursday that in addition to seeking advice from former captains Bernhard Langer, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam, he had also sought out fellow Scot Ferguson. “He’s been one of the most successful managers in Europe over the past 20 years — he knows how to win,” Montgomerie revealed without giving details. Ferguson, the most successful manager in the history of English football, meanwhile told the Daily Mirror he is backing Montgomerie to lead a successful European campaign at Celtic Manor. “Well, I think first of all I am impressed with Colin as captain, albeit he’s Scottish and it’s got nothing to do with that,” Ferguson said. “He’s single-minded, he’s got the experience and he’ll get the best out of the team, I’m really sure of that.” Ferguson, an avid golf fan, said he believed how Montgomerie arranged his pairings for Friday and Saturday’s fourballs and foursomes would have a crucial influence on deciding the outcome of the contest.

WASHINGTON - New Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis was fined 100,000 dollars by the NBA on Wednesday just hours after saying that he sees a hard salary cap coming to the league. Leonsis, the long-time owner of the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals, took over the Wizards earlier this year following the death of former owner Abe Pollin under a purchase deal worked out years before. Leonsis told a group of businessmen on Wednesday before a Wizards pre-season workout session that he expects the NHL’s salary limit model will be adopted in some fashion by the NBA, which is involved in talks on a new labor deal. “In a salary cap era - and soon a hard salary cap in the NBA like

it is in the NHL - if everyone can pay the same amount to the same amount of players, its the small nuanced differences that matter,” Leonsis said. Leonsis later said he was not authorized to speak about the NBA’s ongoing talks with the players union, but said he liked the NHL salary cap system as a way to help contain costs and keep a leaguewide competitive balance. “It is working,” Leonsis said. “Teams are very, very competitive. There is no way that big markets teams can outspend small market teams so when the season starts everyone thinks their team can compete for the Stanley Cup.” By Wednesday evening, the NBA had issued a statement saying Leonsis had been fined for “unauthorized public comments regarding the league’s collective bargaining negotiations”.

Button ‘relaxed’ about deciding races JENSON Button will go into the final four rounds of the world championship ‘confident, relaxed and happy’ even though he is currently at the tail of the group of five drivers battling for the crown. The reigning champion has not won since Shanghai in April and is 25 points behind leader Mark Webber in the standings, but feels he has no reason not to be upbeat. When asked, during an interview for his personal website, if he was feeling ‘confident’, Button replied:

“Confident. Relaxed. Happy. Yeah I can put it in perspective: for the second year running, I’m right in the hunt for the world championship. “I’m already the world champion and I’ve still got every chance of holding on to my title. That’s what I’m in Formula 1 to do, and that’s why I signed for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes; to have that opportunity.” McLaren could not match the pace of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in Singapore, but Button does not believe this had any particular significance for form over the title run-in. “It was a little disappointing to see that we probably didn’t have enough pace to take the fight to the Ferraris and the Red Bulls, but that was to be expected, really,” he said. “Singapore is one of the highest downforce tracks on the calendar, so it’s not a place where our car would really excel. “I think the next four races will be very interesting, they’ll certainly play more to our strengths.” He dismissed any suggestion that Singapore was a pivotal weekend in the title battle. “It’s funny, because every race we go to seems to be called a ‘pivotal’ race - and, while every result is obviously important, I don’t think you’d say that any one

race is really pivotal to your title campaign - it’s more about the pace you carry across the balance of the season,” Button said. “And, funnily enough, I think Singapore showed that it will probably actually take a couple of races to have a more significant impact on the overall standings. Okay, Fernando’s had two good races, and is right in the thick of things, but Lewis [Hamilton] has retired from the last two races, and he’s still right there, and both Sebastian and me are ready to strike. “I think the new points systems has definitely amplified what people think of the standings, but I’ve always imagined the points as they would have been under last year?s system: so, in old money, I’m 10 points off Mark, and Lewis is about eight or nine behind him. And, with four races to go, that’s not much at all. “When you say you’re 25 points off the lead, that sounds a lot - but it’s just easier for me to reference it by the old system. It makes it seem easier to understand and compute, too. “So, as I said, there’s not going to be one pivotal race, except perhaps for the final one, it’s just about taking home the points every weekend.”

“Motegi is Yamaha’s home and I always feel proud to ride there,” said Lorenzo, who missed the podium in the last race in Aragon for the first time this season. He finished fourth there. “Last year, I got my first victory at this track in MotoGP and it was one of the best moments of the season. The main goal is to get back on the podium and continue getting as many points as possible,” the 23-year-old said. With five more rounds left in the season — including three back-to-back races in Japan, Malaysia and Australia — Pedrosa stands alone with the possibility of derailing Lorenzo from clinching his first premier class world title. Pedrosa, having bagged four victories this season, has said he was gaining momentum and declared that “the championship is still alive”, according to MotoGP’s official web site. Australian Casey Stoner on a Ducati, fresh from his first victory of the season in Aragon, is also hungry for more wins to boost his 155 points. Reigning champion Valentino Rossi of Italy will also headline the Motegi race. But the legendary Yamaha rider,

ranked fourth with 140 points, has struggled with a nagging shoulder injury and is mulling having an operation before the season ends in November. If he goes ahead with the operation, he could miss the final two races in Portugal and Valencia. “The leg is now almost back to normal again — I have even started running — but the shoulder is a problem and we know now that this is not going to change until we have time to treat it properly,” Rossi said. “I have some great memories from Motegi, especially winning the championship in 2008, but I am expecting this weekend to be quite difficult on my body,” Rossi said. A special tribute will held for teenage Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa who died in a crash during Italy’s San Marino Grand Prix. It was in his first season in the category and he had started in style by winning the curtain-raiser in Qatar.
