Taylor Swift queen of MTV awards

LOS ANGELES - Taylor Swift was crowned queen of the MTV Video Music Awards as rapper Kanye West announced an improbable run for president in 2020 and Miley Cyrus released her new album for free. Pop superstar Swift, still only 25 years old, won four of her whopping 10 nominations, including Video of the Year for “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar and Best Pop Video for “Blank Space.” She buried the hatchet with rapper Nicki Minaj, embracing her former foe on stage during a

brief rendition of “Bad Blood” dressed in a red tassled mini-dress and presented West with a career achievement award. Cheered by his biggest fan, pregnant wife and reality star Kim Kardashian in a lace-up dress that left little to the imagination, West appeared moved -- but not humbled

-- by an extended standing ovation. Winning MTV’s Video Vanguard lifetime achievement award was a significant milestone for West, previously given to greats such as Madonna, Michael Jackson and Beyonce. “I have decided in 2020 to run for president,” he announced at the end of a rambling address in which he also appeared to confess to smoking marijuana before taking the stage. “I will die for the art, for what I believe in and I ain’t always gonna be polite,” he said. “I rolled up a little something. I got the answer,” he said. “We’re the millenials bro.” The 38-year-old boundarypushing rapper also won best Video With a Social Message for “One Man Can Change the World” with Big Sean and John Legend. Host was shock pop diva Cyrus, who lived up to her reputation by flashing her left breast and nipple, letting a curtain drop backstage at an opportune moment. She closed out the Los Angeles show with a performance that saw a firework set off from her crotch and announcing that her new album, Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz, was out for free online. The website promptly crashed and on twitter she directed her 22 million followers to her regular

form you that Wes Craven passed,” a family statement read. “Craven was surrounded by love, in the presence of his family.” Craven directed 1984’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” whose terrifying scarred villain Freddy Krueger left a defining imprint on the horror genre of that decade and was reprised in a string of sequels

and a 2010 remake. Krueger, who wore a scruffy fedora and had a glove with razor blades attached to the fingers, would visit his victims in their dreams and slash them to death. The first film in the franchise included a character played by a thenunknown Johnny Depp. “He made nightmares seem real, the things that scare you in your

plussed Cyrus, who stayed civil. “We’re all in the industry, we all do interviews, and we all know how they manipulate.” The surprise start to the show was Swift joining a resplendent Minaj, festooned in a red tribal-style headdress, in an opening set. They hit the headlines last month when Minaj’s “Anaconda” was passed over for a Video of the Year nomination. Minaj blamed the slight on bias against full-figured black women, saying the music industry preferred “very slim” women. The very slim Swift responded by telling Minaj “I’ve done nothing but love and support you” and invited her to share the stage. Nearly two days later, Swift apologized. Minaj said she wished that Swift had spoken out on portrayals of African American women.(afp)

subconscious can harm you, get to you,” said Richard Potter, a movie writer and producer who worked with Craven on the “Scream” franchise. Craven’s eye for young talent also saw him cast Sharon Stone and Bruce Willis in their first major roles, in the 1981 horror flick “Deadly Blessing” and a 1985

episode of “The Twilight Zone” respectively. Craven, who was known also for his writing and television work, directed several episodes of “The Twilight Zone” revival in the 1980s. During the 1990s he made three films in the hugely popular “Scream” series, with a fourth in 2011. (afp)

website, where the music was available. Cyrus made MTV award history two years ago by twerking on stage with Robin Thicke in a flesh-colored bikini and cavorting around with a foam finger. On Sunday, she wore a revolving door of outfits for the broadcast, but walked the red carpet in an outfit so revealing that the New York Daily News named it a “crotch chandelier.” But if Minaj hugged and made up with Swift, she went into battle with Cyrus for telling The New York Times in a recent interview that Minaj was “not too kind” and “not very polite.” “This bitch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press, Miley,” said the rapper, after thanking her pastor and winning Best Hip Hop Video for “Anaconda.” The camera panned to a non-

Black investors and dark rulers are conspiring to accelerate the destruction of Bali. The behaviours and interests of both of these groups have made Bali into a nest for corruptive predators and disconnections between words and actions have led Bali into a bleak period of its history. These were some of the views expressed during a discussion entitled “Sustainable Bali” held by the Tabanan Palace last week. The discussion attended by the Sira Arya Kenceng brotherhood also highlighted the process of destruction that has been targeting the four main pillars that support Bali. Ida Cokorda Anglurah Tabanan urged all Balinese people to do some introspection and take immediate action to save Bali. Continue to page 2 Duties ...

Malaysia PM reasserts command with National Day parade

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s government reclaimed the streets of the capital Monday after massive weekend protests demanding the premier’s ouster, staging its own show of force with National Day celebrations attended by thousands. With Prime Minister Najib Razak presiding, masses of flagwaving spectators cheered a colourful parade of soldiers, police and civil servants through the city centre, symbolically underlining the government’s clout despite pressure for change. Organisers of the peaceful weekend demonstrations said more than

200,000 people came out to demand the embattled Najib’s removal over a financial scandal. “Well, we gave it our best shot and now it’s their turn again,” said Simon Tam, a lawyer who attended the demonstrations on both days. “Getting Najib to step down is not easy, and maybe there is not

much hope at all. But can we stand by and say nothing?” Najib has been under pressure since the Wall Street Journal last month published Malaysian documents showing nearly $700 million had been deposited into his personal bank accounts, beginning in 2013. His cabinet ministers now admit the transfers happened, describing them as “political donations” from unidentified Middle Eastern sources but refusing to explain further. Influential ex-leader Mahathir

Mohamad, who calls Najib corrupt and a poor leader and has pressed for his ouster for more than a year, caused a stir by attending the rally on Sunday. The 90-year-old, who squelched civil disobedience during his 19812003 rule, evoked the 1986 Philippine “people power” revolt in calling for Najib to be toppled. “If the government ignores the law, we have to demonstrate. If you look at (former president Ferdinand) Marcos, when he was ruling the Philippines they had to

overthrow him through demonstrations,” he said. But the chances of a “people power” revolt in Malaysia are remote.
