Pacino does double duty at Venice Film Festival Associated Press

VENICE — Al Pacino made two trips up the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, with a pair of movies about aging, regret, giving up and letting go. But fear not — the actor says he’s not about to lower the curtain on his own career.

Pacino plays a small-town Texas locksmith with a key for everything except his own unhappiness in David Gordon Green’s “Manglehorn,” one of 20 films competing for the festival’s Golden Lion prize. And he’s an aging actor who has lost his mojo, and his grip on reality, in Barry Levinson’s “The Humbling,” screening out-of-competition at the festival.

In both films, the 74-year-old actor looks a wreck — shambling, disheveled and drawn. But speaking to journalists before Saturday’s dual premieres he was black-clad, sharply coiffed and sporting ice-blue mirrored sunglasses — every bit the movie star.

He said he could relate to his “Humbling” character’s desire to pack in the

rigors of acting — but hadn’t lost his own appetite for the job.

“I feel very lucky, I have to say,” Pacino said. “When I think of my life and my background, where I came from — like all of us I had issues as a youngster and had to overcome things, and I found something in life that I love to do.

Four decades after he burst to fame as the wiry young star of “The Panic in Needle Park” and “The Godfather,” Pacino pours his skill and soul into these two meaty autumn-years parts.

The title character of “Manglehorn” is an emotionally stunted grump who sends countless letters to a long-lost love, all of which come back marked “return to sender.” He reserves his affection for his granddaughter and his cat, rebuffing ten-

tative romantic overtures from a sweetnatured bank teller (Holly Hunter).

In “The Humbling,” waning actor Simon Axler rattles around his half-empty mansion like a Connecticut King Lear, pinning his misguided hopes of love and redemption on a much younger lesbian, played by Greta Gerwig.

Pacino said he was drawn to a character “going through this tragic fall” and struck by the story’s juxtaposition of comedy and darkness.

He said that any actor could relate to the film, which explores the way the demands of performing, the distractions of drinking and drugs and the pressures of fame “intellectually and emotionally get you to stray somewhat.”

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally tied the knot after nine years together at a secret wedding in the south of France described as a “family affair” with their six children.

The A-list Oscar winners were married by a US judge on Saturday in a small chapel at Chateau Miraval, in the picturesque village of Correns, a spokeswoman for the Tinseltown royal couple said.

George Clooney was among the celebrity friends to congratulate them.

“I’m really happy for Brad and Angie and

their whole family,” said the 53-year-old veteran bachelor, who announced his own engagement in April.

Jolie was walked down the aisle by her eldest sons Maddox and Pax. Daughters Zahara and Vivienne threw petals, while the couple’s other two children, Shiloh and Knox, were the ring bearers.

“It was very much a family affair,” the spokeswoman said in a statement.

Pitt, 50, and Jolie, 39, obtained a marriage license in California from a local US judge who traveled to France to conduct the wedding, which was described as a “non-denominational civil ceremony.”

Quickly grows, moss-cleaning fish hunted by residents Bali Post

BANGLI - So far, the species of fish living in the area of Lake Batur is diverse. Aside from tilapia, there are also grass carp.

This moss-eating freshwater fish is now quite demanded by local residents. Other than offering more savory flavor, the growth of this moss-eating fish also tends to be faster than that of other species.

The Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Alit Parwata, said on Friday (Aug 29) the growth of grass carp was faster than the other fish. This fish only took less than six months from the spread of fingerlings to harvest. Each fish of this species could reach the weight of about 2.5 kg. “Yes, it is in great demand today as its cultivation takes shorter time,” he said.

In addition to its rapid growth, the flavor of this fish also tended to be more delicious than other

fish. According to Alit Parwata, probably it happened because the fish were only eating natural foods in the form of moss growing in the lake.

Since they lived in the wild, added Parwata, this fish was remarkably sought after by people living around the lake. Moreover, the recent eruption of sulfur led to a lot of fish to rise to the surface. As having large enough size, many residents hunted them by using hook and spear. However, such an action was deplored because the hunted fish belonged to brood stock.

Considering the high public demand for the fish, there was possibility if the Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency would think about the further development in floating net cages (KJA). Mouse population reduces, crop harvest gets better

AMLAPURA - Farmers and customary villagers of Ababi, Karangasem, are happy. Their paddy plants in the area of Tirtagangga tourist attraction are no longer attacked by mice. Mouse population has much reduced. As a result, the paddy plants grow well and the crops increase.

It was announced by Chief of Ababi customary village, Made Sudiarsa, a few days ago when met in Karangasem.

Such encouraging phenomenon happened after the implementation of cremation for jero ketut (refined name for mouse by Balinese) last year.

Sudiarsa said that since a few months ago, farmers had harvested in turn both at rice field and plantation. Similarly, the harvest was also made at paddy fields belonging to village property. “Just now, I was sent an SMS if the rice harvest at the village has been completed. But I could not come to join,” he said.

In the mouse cremation last year, he stood at the edge of cremation bade tower carried by tens of local residents.

Procession of local villagers reached about 1 km long, from the location of cremation ritual at the center of Ababi village to the cemetery of mouse in the south of the village.

Although the result was not so much, he said, there had been indication if the mouse population had remarkably decreased from previously. They no longer

disrupted local farmers. “Although they did not get so many rice yields, there had been indication of blessing of the deities,” he said.

After the harvest, farmers planted rice in rotation due to restricted irrigation water. Some farmers had just harvested, while some others had paddy plants of about two weeks old. He said that condition was different from that before the mouse cremation. Formerly, farmers very often suffered losses and crop failure. Other than afflicting the results of cassava, harvest failure also happened to the crops and rice in the paddy field in the village area. At least, they could only get 1 kg of grain from 100 square meters of land. Most of the grain was devoured by mice. Their population was also considered unusual. There was a white rat on local tree, while smaller mice brought rice to the three. Mice did not only devour the rice, but also damaged young rice.

significantly reduced and we rarely even find them. I wonder where they go,” said another farmer, Made Gunung, from Tanah Lengis hamlet, Ababi.

The village known to have the tradition of Nyepi Luh and Nyepi Muani indeed also had mouse cremation since ancient times. The last mouse cremation was held last year. It had not been organized for more than 15 years. Local residents and farmers had long not been able to hold the mouse cremation because the budget was considered expensive for the farmers in some subak areas of the village. Procession and ritual paraphernalia of the cremation were almost the same as the cremation for human. According to a village leader, Nyoman Kuta, when coming down to the paddy field with thousands of residents to catch mouse, it was philosophically intended to upgrade the incarnation of the mouse’s soul. Furthermore, if they were reborn they would not take the birth as mouse but taking a higher degree of being so that they no longer became the pest of farmers’ plant. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Credit for the classic Buffalo wing goes to Teressa Bellissimo, who developed the dish in the kitchen of the Anchor Bar in 1964. Fifty years later, the Main Street eatery remains a must-see for countless culinary visitors.

But there’s no need to confine yourself to one place if you’re

winging your way to New York’s second-largest city; the fiery fin-

ger food is a staple at virtually every pizza joint and pub you’ll

visit. The fun is that no two wings are quite the same.

Anchor Bar wings sizzle in the deep fryer until crispy. They they’re tossed in a bowl with a mixture of butter and cayenne pepper sauce — Frank’s RedHot is the preferred brand — just before they are served alongside celery sticks and blue cheese dressing for dipping.

“They’re the original, that’s the bottom line,” said Drew Cerza, who was proclaimed Buffalo’s “wing king” after starting the wing festival in 2002.

A trip to Duff’s Famous Wings in suburban Amherst offers a different twist on the classic.

While the Anchor Bar serves up a crispy wing, Duff’s offers a softer, saucier version.

“They cover the wings after they sauce them and it really allows the sauce to penetrate the skin of the wing,” Cerza said.

Watch out for the heat here: “The mild is medium, medium’s hot, hot’s extra hot and extra hot,” said Cerza, “will kill you.”

Another option, where attention to detail is the theme, comes from the Bar Bill Tavern, just south of Buffalo in East Aurora.

The secret here — the sauce is applied to every deep-fried wing individually with a paint brush just before serving.

“They never go in a bucket,” explained bar manager Joe Morcelle.

“When you start shaking wings, it starts breaking up the crispiness.”

The individual treatment also ensures the sauce gets into every nook and cranny, Morcelle said.

And while most places pile the wings on a plate, the Bar Bill arranges them precisely this way: the five drums on the left, five flats on the right, fanned out to form a circle with the celery and blue cheese in the middle.

“You eat with your eyes,” Morcelle said (though you’ll still need plenty of napkins for your fingers).

Circling back to the city, another of the “wing king’s” favorites is found at La Nova Pizzeria, which has perfected a barbecue wing cooked over charcoal, complete with grill marks.

“They put them on the grill but they keep moving them,” Cerza said. “You’ve got to keep moving them and you can’t burn them.

It’s very tricky. It’s an art.”

The city also hosts a National Buffalo Wing Festival every Labor Day weekend. The event took its inspiration from the silver screen: When Bill Murray’s character in the 2001 movie “Osmosis Jones” set out for the National Buffalo Wing Festival — there was no such thing in real life.

Barcelona residents fight back against drunken, naked tourists

BARCELONA - A record tourism year may be a boost for Spain’s struggling economy, but in one corner of Barcelona residents are furious about drunken holidaymakers and a new fad for carousing naked in public.

People of La Barceloneta, tucked behind a beachfront which attracts millions of visitors a year, have taken to the streets several days in a row to protest against a rise in unruly tourism and to demand more control over low-cost accommodation.

The marches come after complaints of raucous late-night partying, increasing litter and drunken antics like the fad for nudity around town, captured by residents in photos published in national newspapers.

Barcelona’s city hall said it would create new inspection teams to carry out door-to-door searches in the neighbourhood to locate illegal tourist flats, which residents blame for anti-social tourism.

“We don’t want tourist flats in the neighbourhood, with or without licences,” read a statement on the Facebook page used by locals to organise the latest protest on Aug. 21.

The city government said it was sending a council member to meet residents on Friday and promised more police in the area and a phone bank to take complaints.

The number of international tourists to visit Catalonia - the most visited region in Spain - rose nearly 6 percent to 9.3 million in the first seven months of the year compared with 2013, data from the Industry Ministry showed on Friday.

Across Spain, there were 7 percent more foreign visitors compared with January-July in 2013, which was a record year for tourism broadly welcomed by the country as it emerges from a deep recession.

The sector accounts for roughly 10 percent of the economy.

But hotel stays by foreign tourists in July were down 1.8 percent, according to a National Statistics

Institute report.

“Tourists want to cut costs and there is growing demand for alternative accommodation,” said

Josep-Francesc Valls, a marketing professor at the Esade business school.

The world is rife with conflicts and intolerance, and “facing such a situation, should we remain silent or rise against these?” he demanded.

The forum, therefore, was a means to affirm tangible actions toward intolerance.

“Through the UNAOC forum, we at least have a fighting chance, a potential to act,” Natalegawa affirmed.

No such thing as a bridge between Islam and the West exists. “But more of a bridge between extremism and moderation,” he said.

Natalegawa noted that extremism could be observed in every civilization and religion.

“What we are facing is threat from extremism and intolerance rather than between religions.”

Scores of protesters, including women, carrying hammers and iron rods broke down a fence outside the parliament building, enabling hundreds of people to enter the lawns and parking area, according to an Associated Press photographer at the scene and Pakistani television reports. Airstrikes and aid provide relief for Iraqi town

WASHINGTON — Aircraft from the United States, Australia, France and Britain dropped food and water to the beleaguered Iraqi town of Amirli, which has been under siege by Islamic State militants for nearly two months, the Pentagon said Saturday night. U.S. airstrikes supported the humanitarian mission. Thousands of Shiite Turkmen have been stranded in the farming community about 105 miles (170 kilometers) north of Baghdad. The aid came at the request of the Iraqi government, Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.

Military operations will be limited in scope and duration as needed to address the humanitarian crisis in Amirli and protect the civilians trapped in the town, Kirby said.

Instead of fleeing in the face of the Islamic State drive across northern Iraq, the Shiite Turkmens have stayed and fortified their town of 15,000 with trenches and armed positions.

While Amirli fought off the initial attack in June, it has been surrounded by the militants since mid-July. Some residents have said that the Iraqi military’s efforts to fly in food, water and other aid have not

been enough amid oppressive heat, lack of electrical power — the town’s power station was destroyed weeks ago — and shelling from the militants.

The U.S. had been watching the area closely in case a slaughter of the Turkmen appeared imminent and air support was needed, said Michael Knights, who studies Iraq and the Persian Gulf as a fellow of The Washington Institute. U.S. airstrikes will hasten the success of the relief effort on the ground, he said.

About half of the town’s population is age 15 and under while many others are elderly, sick or wounded, Knights said. “They are remarkably vulnerable, and ISIS is determined to kill as many of these people as possible,” Knights said, referring to an acronym for the Islamic State group. “As the Nazis felt about the Jews, so ISIS feels about the Shia Muslims.”

IMF board expresses confidence in Lagarde

WASHINGTON — The executive board of the International Monetary Fund expressed confidence Friday in IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde after receiving a briefing on a French corruption probe in which Lagarde is being investigated.

In a brief statement, the 24member board said it continues to have “confidence in the managing director’s ability to effectively carry out her duties.”

Lagarde called the investigation “without basis” after answering

questions before magistrates in Paris on Wednesday. She and her former chief of staff are facing questions about their role in an arbitration ruling that handed 400 million euros ($531 million) to French businessman Bernard Tapie.

Tapie had sued French bank Credit Lyonnais for its handling of the sale of his majority stake in sportswear company Adidas in the mid-1990s.

In her statement Wednesday, Lagarde said that after three years of proceedings and dozens of hours of questioning, the court had found no evidence that she had done anything wrong and that the only remaining allegation “is that I was not sufficiently vigilant.”

She said she was returning to

Washington and her work at the IMF. Under French law, the action to put Lagarde under official investigation is equivalent to a preliminary charge, which means there is reason to suspect an infraction. Investigating judges can later decide to drop the case or issue a formal charge and send the matter to trial.

In its statement, the IMF board said, “It would not be appropriate to comment on a case that has been and is currently before the French

judiciary.” But the statement said the board wanted to express its continued confidence in Lagarde’s abilities to carry out her duties.

The 24-member executive board is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the IMF. It represents the 188 nations that are members of the international lending organization.

The largest economies, such as the United States, have their own board seat, while smaller countries are represented by directors who speak for a group of countries.

Brazil’s economy slips into a recession

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s economy, once an emerging-market darling, fell into recession, according to government data released Friday, as millions of new middle class citizens tightened their belts and further dampened a creditdriven spending spree.

The results are a blow to President Dilma Rousseff, who faces an increasingly tough reelection in October. A new poll released late Friday showed her biggest rival pulling into a dead heat with her in a first-round vote — and is 10 percentage points ahead of the Rousseff in an expected runoff ballot.

The government’s statistics bureau reported that gross domestic product dropped 0.6 percent in the second quarter, in large part because of soft consumer spending. Firstquarter results also were revised downward from 0.2 percent growth to a 0.2 percent drop, showing a two-quarter slide that most economists use to define a recession.

Analysts said the economy also suffered because investors are holding off, waiting to see how the October election changes the economic winds.

Even the World Cup played a part in Brazil’s doldrums because workers took many days off, contributing to weak industrial output.

But the heart of the problem is a crisis for the government’s model of consumption-led growth, which many economists say is played out.

“Of course I’m spending a lot less!” said Maria Sousa, a 25-year-

old doing some window shopping but no buying at a mall in Rio de Janeiro. “I’m feeling less confident about my financial situation and I’m thinking more about trying to save than spend.”

London-based Capital Economics wrote in a research note that “it is consumption that has been the key driver of growth since the 2009 global financial crisis. But consumers are now struggling, in part because household balance sheets have become stretched following a decade-long credit boom.”

After blistering 7.5 percent growth in 2010, Brazil’s economy has limped along. The long, slow slide means there aren’t any regional shocks expected from the official drop into recession, but it still darkens the horizon for Brazil’s neighbors, many of whom send a large percentage of their exports into the nation.

Argentina, whose economy is in recession and where citizens face inflation of 40 percent, may be hurt the most. About one-fifth of Argentina’s exports flow into Brazil, but the amount Brazilians buy is forecast to shrink.

“It’s another headwind for Argentina, at exactly the wrong time,” said Neil Shearing, chief emerging markets economist at Capital Economics.

Brazil itself has been hurt by falling demand for its cars and big-ticket household items like refrigerators and washers in Argentina, one of the reasons Brazilian industrial output fell for the fourth consecutive quarter.

Analysts said that to return to

its days of fast growth, Brazil must undertake long-delayed reforms to its tax system, labor laws and bureaucracy.

Brazil remains a grindingly difficult place to do business. It ranked 116th on the World Bank’s most

recent “Ease of Doing Business Index,” despite being the world’s seventh-largest economy.

Brazil’s taxation regime was billed as the globe’s most complicated and burdensome, according to this year’s comparison of tax

systems in 189 nations carried out by accounting company PwC, along with the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

That adds to bottlenecks at every turn when Brazil tries to capitalize on its potential, analysts say.

MANILA — Under cover of darkness, 40 Filipino peacekeepers made a daring escape after being surrounded and under fire for seven hours by Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights, Philippine officials said Sunday, leaving 44 Fijian troops still in the hands of the al-Qaida-linked insurgents. “We may call it the greatest escape,” Philippine military chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said.

The peacekeepers became trapped after Syrian rebels entered the U.N.-patrolled buffer zone between Syria and Israel this past week, seizing 44 Fijian soldiers and demanding that their Filipino colleagues surrender. The Filipinos, occupying two U.N. encampments, refused and clashed with the rebels on Saturday. The first group of 35 peacekeepers was then successfully escorted out of a U.N. encampment in Breiqa by Irish and Filipino forces on board armored vehicles.

The remaining 40 peacekeepers were besieged at the second encampment, called Rwihana, by more than 100 gunmen who rammed the camp’s gates with their trucks and fired mortar rounds.

The Filipinos returned fire in selfdefense, Philippine military officials said.

At one point, Syrian government forces fired artillery rounds from a distance to prevent the Filipino peacekeepers from being overwhelmed, said Col. Roberto Ancan,

a Philippine military official who helped monitor the tense standoff from the Philippine capital, Manila, and mobilize support for the besieged troops.

“Although they were surrounded and outnumbered, they held their ground for seven hours,” Catapang said in a news conference in Manila, adding that there were no Filipino casualties. “We commend our soldiers for exhibiting resolve even while under heavy fire.” As night fell and a cease-fire took hold, the 40 Filipinos fled with their weapons, traveling across the chilly hills for nearly two hours before meeting up with other U.N. forces, who escorted them to safety early Sunday, Philippine officials said.

During the siege, the Philippine secretaries of defense and foreign affairs, along with the country’s top military brass, gathered at military headquarters in Manila to communicate with the Filipino forces and help guide them out of danger. The Syrian and Israeli

governments, along with the United States and Qatar, provided support, the Philippine military said without elaborating.

“If they held their ground, they could have been massacred because they were already running low on ammunition,” Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told The Associated Press. “So we discussed with them the option of escape and evasion.”

Philippine military officials believed there may have been rebel casualties in the fighting in Rwihana. President Benigno Aquino III, Gazmin said, praised efforts that brought the Filipino peacekeepers to safety but wanted to be sure they could not be targeted by rebel retaliatory attacks.

In New York, The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, or UNDOF, whose mission is to monitor a 1974 disengagement in the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria, reported that shortly after midnight local time, during

a cease-fire agreed with the armed elements, all 40 Filipino peacekeepers left their position and “arrived in a safe location one hour later.”

The Filipinos escaped during the cease-fire because they refused to agree to surrender as the insurgents demanded, Philippine military spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala

said.

The clashes erupted after Syrian rebel groups — including alQaida’s Syrian affiliate, the Nusra Front — overran the Quneitra crossing on the frontier between Syrian- and Israeli-controlled parts of the Golan on Wednesday, seizing 44 Fijians.

New fissure eruption at Iceland volcano prompts highest aviation warning Reuters STOCKHOLM - A new fissure eruption in an ice-free area of Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano system prompted authorities to raise their warning level for the risk of ash to aviation to the highest level of red

on Sunday.

Iceland’s largest volcanic system, which cuts a 190 km long and up to 25 km wide (118 miles by 15.5 miles) swathe across the North Atlantic island, has been hit by thousands of earthquakes over the last two weeks and scientists

have been on high alert.

In 2010, an ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, in a different region of Iceland, closed much of Europe’s air space for six days.

“A small eruption started at 0600 this morning,” the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency

Management said in a statement.

“The Icelandic Met Office has raised the aviation colour code to red for Bardarbunga/Holuhraun.”

Red is the highest level on a fivecolour scale and indicates that an eruption is imminent or under way, with a risk of spewing ash.

On Friday, a 600 metre-long fissure 5 km north of Dyngjujokull glacier in the north Vatnajokull glacier erupted but no ash was

detected at the time. That eruption only lasted for a few hours.

“This is a little bit larger fissure eruption than on Friday,” Armann Hoskuldsson, a geologist at the University of Iceland who is working in the area, told Reuters.

“There is more lava and more rifts in the ice cap. The rifts are approximately 1 km further to the north than after the fissure eruption on Friday.”

German security official warns of terror threat

BERLIN — Germany’s domestic intelligence chief says he expects Islamic extremists who have traveled to Syria and Iraq will return and commit terror attacks. HansGeorg Maassen told Deutschlandfunk radio on Sunday that there was an “increased abstract threat” of attacks in Germany.

Unlike Britain, Germany hasn’t

raised its national threat level for terrorism recently because of a lack of concrete warning signs.

Maassen says at least 400 people have left Germany to join jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq, and five have died as suicide bombers.

Maassen also wants to improve cooperation with Turkey, a key transit country for Europeans seeking to join extremist groups.

INDONESIA Indonesia, Kazakhstan eyeing for cooperation in extradition Antara

NUSA DUA - The governments of Indonesia and Kazakhstan have agreed on trade and economic cooperation after conducting a bilateral meeting on Saturday.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed at Uluwatu 5 Room of BNDCC, Nusa Dua, Bali, on Saturday during the 6th Global Forum of United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.

Indonesia was represented by Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa, while Kazakhstan by Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov.

“Five government-to-government and 14 business-to-business cooperations have been agreed upon,” Minister Natalegawa stated.

Kazakhstan was a very important country in Central Asia region, Natalegawa pointed out. “It has a common market with Russia and Belarus, so that our private companies investing in Kazakhstan will not only have access to the Kazakhstan market but also Russia and Belarus, the markets of around 200 million people.”

The two countries had also agreed on establishing a consultation forum for both ministries.

“Through Kazakhstan, we will have wider access to the larger

market in Central Asia,” Natalegawa said.

Indonesia was also planning to build instant noodles factories in Kazakhstan, as the country was one of the largest wheat producers in the world.

The cooperation has also offered the establishment of Indonesian tire factory in Kazakhstan.

The two countries had also discussed air service agreement on the establishment of direct flight route from Almaty to Denpasar, Bali.

Almaty is not the capital city of Kazakhstan but a center of industry, tourism, and business.

The only hindrance was the distance, a geographical factor, as the perception is that Kazakhstan is a country far from Indonesia whose potential was unknown, Natalegawa noted.

“We should overcome such perception and should consider the good opportunities that Kazakhstan has offered to Indonesia,” he said.

Meanwhile, foreign minister of Kazakhstan said distance was not the major hindrance to trade and business agreement.

“With modern means of communications and modern technologies, Kazakhstan has been improving its access through the global market, and these will bring Kazakhstan and South Asia-Pacific closer,” he added.

Extradition

Marty said the governments of Indonesia and Kazakhstan were studying the possibility of the establishment of cooperation in the field of extradition. “They (Kazakhstan) wanted an extradition cooperation and, in addition, transfer of sentenced convicts,” said Marty.

However, few hindrances with Indonesia is that the law on such issues has not yet been regulated, he noted.

“If the transfer of sentenced persons cannot be met, at least the possibility of cooperation of extradition can be explored,” Natalegawa said.

The cooperation in extradition is necessary during unexpected situations, he explained.

“During the past, incidents and developments had forced us to extradite Indonesian citizens from a particular and remote country, which had minimum cooperation with Indonesia,” Natalegawa stated.

The two countries also discussed air service agreement about the establishment of direct flight route from Almaty, a center of industry, tourism, and business in Kazakhstan, to Denpasar, Bali, and agreed on some cooperation in trade and economy sectors.

Twitter to set up shop in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Twitter plans to open an office in Indonesia over the coming months as it seeks to boost revenues in the social-media-addicted nation, the company announced Friday.

Several market monitors have declared Jakarta as the world’s most active city of tweeters. Twitter does not publicise official user numbers by country or city.

“This is of great importance to Twitter because Indonesia loves Twitter and Twitter loves Indonesia,” the company’s president of global revenue and partnerships, Adam Bain, told reporters in Jakarta as he made the announcement.

“In fact, when we think about the market overall, Indonesia is one of the biggest countries that

are active on Twitter,” Bain said.

Like many social networking platforms, Twitter is yet to turn a profit, but the San Franciscobased company’s second-quarter revenues more than doubled onyear to $312 million.

The number of monthly active users surged 24 percent to 271 million globally in the same period.

Indonesia is a major market for Twitter -- it is the world’s fourth most populous country with some 250 million people, and smartphone sales are surging as the middle class grows rapidly.

Millions access the Internet primarily through smartphones and tablets, and surveys show social media is the primary reason for using mobile devices.

Tweets about Indonesia’s presidential election alone clocked

some 95 million tweets, from January 1 until election day on July 9.

Twitter’s main revenue source is advertising, with big brands like Coca-Cola and Intel having promoted their products on the platform to Indonesian users.

Indonesian consumer engagement on Twitter is “extremely high”, Bain said, and had “gotten the attention of the entire team back at headquarters”.

Other foreign tech companies, such as BlackBerry, have rubbed up against Indonesian officials over infrastructure issues and content.

Bain said he was hopeful that Indonesia’s incoming government would be welcoming, pointing to president-elect Joko Widodo’s avid use of Twitter as a positive sign.

UN Chief praises Indonesia for its contribution on peacekeeping mission

NUSA DUA - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has praised Indonesia for its contribution to the UN peacekeeping mission.

“We are lucky that almost 1,700 UN peacekeeping personnel have come from Indonesia,” he said during a press conference held on the sidelines of the Sixth United Nations Global Alliance for Civilizations (UNAOC) Forum here on Friday.

Ban Ki-moon, who was accompanied by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and UNAOC high representatives at the press conference, urged Syrian militants to immediately release the 43 Fijian peacekeeping troops they were holding hostage.

He further noted that Indonesia is always at the forefront of efforts to promote sustainable development and is the world’s third-largest democratic country, adding that it

has set a good example in organizing its general elections.

“I highly appreciate Indonesia with regard to the issue of climate change.

I have invited President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to a climate change meeting to be held in New York on September 23,” he said.

Isner loses to Kohlschreiber in US Open 3rd round Associated Press

NEW YORK — Once again, John Isner’s trip to Flushing Meadows ended in the third round. Once again, it happened with a loss to Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber at that stage. And once again, there are zero American men in the U.S. Open’s round of 16 — something that had never happened until it did last year at the country’s tennis championship, which was first played in 1881.

On a windy, cloudy evening, the 13th-seeded Isner hit 42 aces, saved all five break points he faced — and yet it wasn’t enough. Unable to capitalize on plenty of openings, and surprisingly outplayed in a trio of tiebreakers, Isner lost to the 22ndseeded Kohlschreiber 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4). “It’s disappointing for me personally — not for America as a whole,” Isner said.

It was the third straight year that these two men faced each other in the third round in New York, and Kohlschreiber won them all. He eliminated the big-serving, 6-foot10 Isner in five sets in 2012, and in four sets in 2013. Isner only converted 1 of 12 break points he accumulated.

“Got a little tight, to be honest, and didn’t move my feet on some points that I really needed,” Isner said, resting his chin on his left fist. “I had chances. I just didn’t convert.” The 29-year-old Isner is best known for winning the longest match in tennis history, an 11-plushour marathon spread over three days that ended 70-68 in the fifth set at Wimbledon in 2010. Currently, he is the only U.S. man ranked inside

the top 45, and has made clear he does not necessarily enjoy that distinction.

Fans at Louis Armstrong Stadium tried to boost their guy with chants of “Let’s go, John!” And they roared throughout the fourth set, especially when Isner would edge ahead within a game.

But this one mainly came down to the tiebreakers, usually a strong suit for Isner: He entered the day 37-17 in those set-deciders this season, while Kohlschreiber was only 9-11. “He was just better,” Isner said. “I’ve got to be better.

I know I can be. Just not showing it.”

Earlier Saturday, 57th-ranked Sam Querrey — entering the day, the only other man from the host country remaining of the 12 originally in the draw — put up little resistance while bowing out against No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Given Isner’s history against Kohlschreiber at the U.S. Open, it’s tough to call that result surprising, even if the American is ranked higher and is 4-0 against the German everywhere else they’ve played.

Instead, look to the women for the “Did that really happen?” results.

In the latest of a series of stunners, third-seeded Petra Kvitova — who won her second Wimbledon title last month — was sent home with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat against Aleksandra Krunic, a 21-year-old qualifier from Serbia who is ranked 145th.

Pro wrestling returns to the ring in North Korea

PYONGYANG — North Koreans got their first look at pro wrestling in about 20 years on Saturday when an ex-NFL lineman and 20 other grapplers from around the world took to the ring for an exhibition put together by a charismatic former Japanese pro-wrestler who is now a member of parliament.

Kanji “Antonio” Inoki, who organized the two-day event in Pyongyang, said he hopes it will pave the way for more exchanges with the North.

The exhibition was the first major sports event with big-name foreigners in the North Korean capital since Dennis Rodman and a team of other former NBA players staged a game in January for leader Kim Jong Un’s birthday.

Jang Ung, a member of t he International Olympic Committee and the North Korean co-organizer of this weekend’s event, opened the show

Saturday with a speech denouncing the U.S. for conducting military exercises with South Korea that he said were preparations for a nuclear attack. South Korea and the U.S. say the training is purely defensive.

When Americans Bob “The Beast” Sapp and Jon Andersen took to the ring, the crowd of about 15,000 didn’t seem to know how to respond.

“It was real eerie and a little scary at first,” said Sapp, who briefly played for the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears before becoming a celebrity in Japan as a mixed martial artist. “But we were able to take control of the audience. It went over very well.”

Wild Chelsea win capitalizes on City slip-up

LIVERPOOL, England — Chelsea showed off its new-found attacking sparkle in a 6-3 win over Everton on a day Manchester City lost its cutting edge to slip to a surprise first defeat in its Premier League title defense. City’s 1-0 home loss to Stoke on Saturday was exacerbated by its title rival’s wild victory at Goodison Park, in which Spain striker Diego Costa scored in the first and last minutes to continue the superb start to his Chelsea career.

Another big-money arrival in English football, Angel Di Maria, made a promising debut for Manchester United but its 0-0 draw at promoted Burnley left Louis van Gaal’s side with just two points from three games — despite a spending spree of 130 million pounds ($215 million) this summer. Chelsea has no such problems, with a third straight win leaving the team top of the early standings on goal difference from surprising Swansea.

In Costa, Chelsea also has arguably the standout player so far this season with four goals already since joining from Atletico Madrid. “He’s literally got everything,” Chelsea captain John Terry said. “He’s been brilliant, and he’s off to a flying start.” With Costa in such electric form and Cesc Fabregas picking up two more assists, Chelsea has an attacking swagger it lacked last season. “I want the team to play the way we did, to be positive,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. “We were killers in attack.”

Goals by Costa — after just 34 seconds — and Branislav Ivanovic put Chelsea 2-0 ahead inside three minutes, only for Kevin Mirallas to reduce the deficit for Everton just before halftime. Seamus Coleman’s own goal in the 66th minute sparked a rush of five goals in a chaotic 11-minute spell during which both defenses were carved open to the dismay of the team’s managers.

A flat display by City, five days after its impressive 3-1 win over Liverpool, was punished when former United striker Mame Diouf ran 70 meters in the 58th minute in a solo

effort that was capped by a finish between goalkeeper Joe Hart’s legs. “I tried just to stay on my feet and keep on going,” Diouf said. “We will enjoy this win — it is a big one.”

It was Stoke’s first-ever goal at the Etihad and earned the team a first win of the season under Mark Hughes, the former City manager. City failed to score at home for only the second time in 71 Premier League games, even with Argentina striker Sergio Aguero back in the lineup after regaining full fitness. “It’s a surprising defeat because we don’t expect to lose against Stoke but these games sometimes happen,” City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “Really we were not very creative, we did not find the space and that is credit to Stoke.”

Di Maria made his first start for United after his British-record move from Real Madrid for 59.7 million pounds ($99 million) and showed enough signs that he will be a success at Old Trafford. He still couldn’t inspire Van Gaal’s team to a first win in any competition this season, with United lacking a cutting edge despite fielding Di Maria, Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in an exciting front four. Van Persie was denied twice with United’s best chances.

MILAN — New Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has been left out of Antonio Conte’s first Italy squad.

Balotelli, who joined Liverpool from AC Milan for 16 million pounds ($26.5 million) last week, has not been included in the 27man squad for Thursday’s friendly against the Netherlands and Italy’s

first qualifying match for the 2016 European Championship, against Norway, five days later.

Balotelli is suspended from the qualifier after picking up two yellow cards at the World Cup. Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio is also suspended, but has been included.

FRANKFURT — Paraguay striker Nelson Valdez has been ruled out for several months with a cruciate ligament rupture sustained in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2-2 draw at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Frankfurt says on its website that the former Borussia Dortmund striker suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in

his right knee.

The injury occurred in a tussle for the ball with Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez in the 54th minute. Frankfurt coach Thomas Schaaf says, “It’s very unlucky. This will really hurt us.”

Valdez joined Frankfurt in the offseason following a loan spell at Greek side Olympiakos.

Juventus coach Allegri starts with win at Chievo

MILAN — New Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri kicked off his time in charge with a victory as his team won 1-0 at Chievo Verona in the Serie A opener on Saturday.

Roma, last year’s runner-up, won 2-0 at home to Fiorentina, with Radja Nainggolan and Gervinho scoring. Juventus showed that little has changed from the spirit which drove it to three consecutive league titles as Martin Caceres helped open the scoring in the sixth minute.

Caceres headed Carlos Tevez’s corner toward goal, although it eventually went in off the back of Cristiano Biraghi. Juventus had several chances to extend its advantage and hit the woodwork three times in the first half.

“There are good signs, I’m happy enough,” Allegri said. “But there is a lot to improve. I was more worried than angry at the end. We should have closed the match and instead we risked them equalizing.” Roma got off to a record Serie A start of 10 straight wins last season, before faltering as the campaign wore on. It once again looks set to push Juventus all the way.

“We’re strong and we’re not going to hide it,” Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. “This year

Wild Chelsea win capitalizes on City slip-up

LIVERPOOL, England — Chelsea showed off its new-found attacking sparkle in a 6-3 win over Everton on a day Manchester City lost its cutting edge to slip to a surprise first defeat in its Premier League title defense. City’s 1-0 home loss to Stoke on Saturday was exacerbated by its title rival’s wild victory at Goodison Park, in which Spain striker Diego Costa scored in the first and last minutes to continue the superb start to his Chelsea career.

Another big-money arrival in English football, Angel Di Maria, made a promising debut for Manchester United but its 0-0 draw at promoted Burnley left Louis van Gaal’s side with just two points from three games — despite a spending spree of 130 million pounds ($215 million) this summer. Chelsea has no such problems, with a third straight win leaving the team top of the early standings on goal difference from surprising Swansea.

In Costa, Chelsea also has arguably the standout player so far this season with four goals already since joining from Atletico Madrid. “He’s literally got everything,” Chelsea captain John Terry said. “He’s been brilliant, and he’s off to a flying start.” With Costa in such electric form and Cesc Fabregas picking up two more assists, Chelsea has an attacking swagger it lacked last season. “I want the team to play the way we did, to be positive,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. “We were killers in attack.”

first qualifying match for the 2016 European Championship, against Norway, five days later.

FRANKFURT — Paraguay striker Nelson Valdez has been ruled out for several months with a cruciate ligament rupture sustained in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2-2 draw at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Frankfurt says on its website that the former Borussia Dortmund striker suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in

his right knee.

The injury occurred in a tussle for the ball with Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez in the 54th minute. Frankfurt coach Thomas Schaaf says, “It’s very unlucky. This will really hurt us.”

Valdez joined Frankfurt in the offseason following a loan spell at Greek side Olympiakos.

Isner loses to Kohlschreiber in US Open 3rd round Associated Press

NEW YORK — Once again, John Isner’s trip to Flushing Meadows ended in the third round. Once again, it happened with a loss to Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber at that stage. And once again, there are zero American men in the U.S. Open’s round of 16 — something that had never happened until it did last year at the country’s tennis championship, which was first played in 1881.

On a windy, cloudy evening, the 13th-seeded Isner hit 42 aces, saved all five break points he faced — and yet it wasn’t enough. Unable to capitalize on plenty of openings, and surprisingly outplayed in a trio of tiebreakers, Isner lost to the 22ndseeded Kohlschreiber 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4). “It’s disappointing for me personally — not for America as a whole,” Isner said.

It was the third straight year that these two men faced each other in the third round in New York, and Kohlschreiber won them all. He eliminated the big-serving, 6-foot10 Isner in five sets in 2012, and in four sets in 2013. Isner only converted 1 of 12 break points he accumulated.

“Got a little tight, to be honest, and didn’t move my feet on some points that I really needed,” Isner said, resting his chin on his left fist. “I had chances. I just didn’t convert.” The 29-year-old Isner is best known for winning the longest match in tennis history, an 11-plushour marathon spread over three days that ended 70-68 in the fifth set at Wimbledon in 2010. Currently, he is the only U.S. man ranked inside

the top 45, and has made clear he does not necessarily enjoy that distinction.

Fans at Louis Armstrong Stadium tried to boost their guy with chants of “Let’s go, John!” And they roared throughout the fourth set, especially when Isner would edge ahead within a game.

But this one mainly came down to the tiebreakers, usually a strong suit for Isner: He entered the day 37-17 in those set-deciders this season, while Kohlschreiber was only 9-11. “He was just better,” Isner said. “I’ve got to be better.

I know I can be. Just not showing it.”

Earlier Saturday, 57th-ranked Sam Querrey — entering the day, the only other man from the host country remaining of the 12 originally in the draw — put up little resistance while bowing out against No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Given Isner’s history against Kohlschreiber at the U.S. Open, it’s tough to call that result surprising, even if the American is ranked higher and is 4-0 against the German everywhere else they’ve played.

Instead, look to the women for the “Did that really happen?” results.

In the latest of a series of stunners, third-seeded Petra Kvitova — who won her second Wimbledon title last month — was sent home with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat against Aleksandra Krunic, a 21-year-old qualifier from Serbia who is ranked 145th.

That means that the women seeded 2, 3 and 4 behind No. 1 Serena Williams are all gone before the end of Week 1. “I’m an outsider,” Krunic said. “I honestly didn’t know what to expect from myself at all. You know, I don’t know my limits.”

PYONGYANG — North Koreans got their first look at pro wrestling in about 20 years on Saturday when an ex-NFL lineman and 20 other grapplers from around the world took to the ring for an exhibition put together by a charismatic former Japanese pro-wrestler who is now a member of parliament.

Kanji “Antonio” Inoki, who organized the two-day event in Pyongyang, said he hopes it will pave the way for more exchanges with the North.

The exhibition was the first major sports event with big-name foreigners in the North Korean capital since Dennis Rodman and a team of other former NBA players staged a game in January for leader Kim Jong Un’s birthday.

Jang Ung, a member of t he International Olympic Committee and the North Korean co-organizer of this weekend’s event, opened the show

Saturday with a speech denouncing the U.S. for conducting military exercises with South Korea that he said were preparations for a nuclear attack. South Korea and the U.S. say the training is purely defensive.

When Americans Bob “The Beast” Sapp and Jon Andersen took to the ring, the crowd of about 15,000 didn’t seem to know how to respond.

“It was real eerie and a little scary at first,” said Sapp, who briefly played for the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears before becoming a celebrity in Japan as a mixed martial artist. “But we were able to take control of the audience. It went over very well.”

Philippine troops pull ‘greatest escape’ in Golan Associated Press

MANILA — Under cover of darkness, 40 Filipino peacekeepers made a daring escape after being surrounded and under fire for seven hours by Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights, Philippine officials said Sunday, leaving 44 Fijian troops still in the hands of the al-Qaida-linked insurgents. “We may call it the greatest escape,” Philippine military chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said.

The peacekeepers became trapped after Syrian rebels entered the U.N.-patrolled buffer zone between Syria and Israel this past week, seizing 44 Fijian soldiers and demanding that their Filipino colleagues surrender. The Filipinos, occupying two U.N. encampments, refused and clashed with the rebels on Saturday. The first group of 35 peacekeepers was then successfully escorted out of a U.N. encampment in Breiqa by Irish and Filipino forces on board armored vehicles.

The remaining 40 peacekeepers were besieged at the second encampment, called Rwihana, by more than 100 gunmen who rammed the camp’s gates with their trucks and fired mortar rounds.

The Filipinos returned fire in selfdefense, Philippine military officials said.

At one point, Syrian government forces fired artillery rounds from a distance to prevent the Filipino peacekeepers from being overwhelmed, said Col. Roberto Ancan,

a Philippine military official who helped monitor the tense standoff from the Philippine capital, Manila, and mobilize support for the besieged troops.

“Although they were surrounded and outnumbered, they held their ground for seven hours,” Catapang said in a news conference in Manila, adding that there were no Filipino casualties. “We commend our soldiers for exhibiting resolve even while under heavy fire.” As night fell and a cease-fire took hold, the 40 Filipinos fled with their weapons, traveling across the chilly hills for nearly two hours before meeting up with other U.N. forces, who escorted them to safety early Sunday, Philippine officials said.

During the siege, the Philippine secretaries of defense and foreign affairs, along with the country’s top military brass, gathered at military headquarters in Manila to communicate with the Filipino forces and help guide them out of danger. The Syrian and Israeli

governments, along with the United States and Qatar, provided support, the Philippine military said without elaborating.

“If they held their ground, they could have been massacred because they were already running low on ammunition,” Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told The Associated Press. “So we discussed with them the option of escape and evasion.”

Philippine military officials believed there may have been rebel casualties in the fighting in Rwihana. President Benigno Aquino III, Gazmin said, praised efforts that brought the Filipino peacekeepers to safety but wanted to be sure they could not be targeted by rebel retaliatory attacks.

In New York, The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, or UNDOF, whose mission is to monitor a 1974 disengagement in the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria, reported that shortly after midnight local time, during

a cease-fire agreed with the armed elements, all 40 Filipino peacekeepers left their position and “arrived in a safe location one hour later.”

The Filipinos escaped during the cease-fire because they refused to agree to surrender as the insurgents demanded, Philippine military spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala

Iceland’s largest volcanic system, which cuts a 190 km long and up to 25 km wide (118 miles by 15.5 miles) swathe across the North Atlantic island, has been hit by thousands of earthquakes over the last two weeks and scientists

Red is the highest level on a fivecolour scale and indicates that an eruption is imminent or under way, with a risk of spewing ash.

On Friday, a 600 metre-long fissure 5 km north of Dyngjujokull glacier in the north Vatnajokull glacier erupted but no ash was

detected at the time. That eruption only lasted for a few hours.

“This is a little bit larger fissure eruption than on Friday,” Armann Hoskuldsson, a geologist at the University of Iceland who is working in the area, told Reuters.

“There is more lava and more rifts in the ice cap. The rifts are approximately 1 km further to the north than after the fissure eruption on Friday.”

German security official warns of terror threat

BERLIN — Germany’s domestic intelligence chief says he expects Islamic extremists who have traveled to Syria and Iraq will return and commit terror attacks. HansGeorg Maassen told Deutschlandfunk radio on Sunday that there was an “increased abstract threat” of attacks in Germany.

Unlike Britain, Germany hasn’t

raised its national threat level for terrorism recently because of a lack of concrete warning signs.

Maassen says at least 400 people have left Germany to join jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq, and five have died as suicide bombers.

Maassen also wants to improve cooperation with Turkey, a key transit country for Europeans seeking to join extremist groups.

INDONESIA Indonesia, Kazakhstan eyeing for cooperation in extradition Antara

NUSA DUA - The governments of Indonesia and Kazakhstan have agreed on trade and economic cooperation after conducting a bilateral meeting on Saturday.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed at Uluwatu 5 Room of BNDCC, Nusa Dua, Bali, on Saturday during the 6th Global Forum of United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.

Indonesia was represented by Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa, while Kazakhstan by Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov.

“Five government-to-government and 14 business-to-business cooperations have been agreed upon,” Minister Natalegawa stated.

Kazakhstan was a very important country in Central Asia region, Natalegawa pointed out. “It has a common market with Russia and Belarus, so that our private companies investing in Kazakhstan will not only have access to the Kazakhstan market but also Russia and Belarus, the markets of around 200 million people.”

The two countries had also agreed on establishing a consultation forum for both ministries.

“Through Kazakhstan, we will have wider access to the larger

market in Central Asia,” Natalegawa said.

Indonesia was also planning to build instant noodles factories in Kazakhstan, as the country was one of the largest wheat producers in the world.

The cooperation has also offered the establishment of Indonesian tire factory in Kazakhstan.

The two countries had also discussed air service agreement on the establishment of direct flight route from Almaty to Denpasar, Bali.

Almaty is not the capital city of Kazakhstan but a center of industry, tourism, and business.

The only hindrance was the distance, a geographical factor, as the perception is that Kazakhstan is a country far from Indonesia whose potential was unknown, Natalegawa noted.

“We should overcome such perception and should consider the good opportunities that Kazakhstan has offered to Indonesia,” he said.

Meanwhile, foreign minister of Kazakhstan said distance was not the major hindrance to trade and business agreement.

“With modern means of communications and modern technologies, Kazakhstan has been improving its access through the global market, and these will bring Kazakhstan and South Asia-Pacific closer,” he added.

Extradition

Marty said the governments of Indonesia and Kazakhstan were studying the possibility of the establishment of cooperation in the field of extradition. “They (Kazakhstan) wanted an extradition cooperation and, in addition, transfer of sentenced convicts,” said Marty.

However, few hindrances with Indonesia is that the law on such issues has not yet been regulated, he noted.

“If the transfer of sentenced persons cannot be met, at least the possibility of cooperation of extradition can be explored,” Natalegawa said.

The cooperation in extradition is necessary during unexpected situations, he explained.

“During the past, incidents and developments had forced us to extradite Indonesian citizens from a particular and remote country, which had minimum cooperation with Indonesia,” Natalegawa stated.

The two countries also discussed air service agreement about the establishment of direct flight route from Almaty, a center of industry, tourism, and business in Kazakhstan, to Denpasar, Bali, and agreed on some cooperation in trade and economy sectors.

Twitter to set up shop in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Twitter plans to open an office in Indonesia over the coming months as it seeks to boost revenues in the social-media-addicted nation, the company announced Friday.

Several market monitors have declared Jakarta as the world’s most active city of tweeters. Twitter does not publicise official user numbers by country or city.

“This is of great importance to Twitter because Indonesia loves Twitter and Twitter loves Indonesia,” the company’s president of global revenue and partnerships, Adam Bain, told reporters in Jakarta as he made the announcement.

“In fact, when we think about the market overall, Indonesia is one of the biggest countries that

are active on Twitter,” Bain said.

Like many social networking platforms, Twitter is yet to turn a profit, but the San Franciscobased company’s second-quarter revenues more than doubled onyear to $312 million.

The number of monthly active users surged 24 percent to 271 million globally in the same period.

Indonesia is a major market for Twitter -- it is the world’s fourth most populous country with some 250 million people, and smartphone sales are surging as the middle class grows rapidly.

Millions access the Internet primarily through smartphones and tablets, and surveys show social media is the primary reason for using mobile devices.

Tweets about Indonesia’s presidential election alone clocked

some 95 million tweets, from January 1 until election day on July 9.

Twitter’s main revenue source is advertising, with big brands like Coca-Cola and Intel having promoted their products on the platform to Indonesian users.

Indonesian consumer engagement on Twitter is “extremely high”, Bain said, and had “gotten the attention of the entire team back at headquarters”.

Other foreign tech companies, such as BlackBerry, have rubbed up against Indonesian officials over infrastructure issues and content.

Bain said he was hopeful that Indonesia’s incoming government would be welcoming, pointing to president-elect Joko Widodo’s avid use of Twitter as a positive sign.

UN Chief praises Indonesia for its contribution on peacekeeping mission

NUSA DUA - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has praised Indonesia for its contribution to the UN peacekeeping mission.

“We are lucky that almost 1,700 UN peacekeeping personnel have come from Indonesia,” he said during a press conference held on the sidelines of the Sixth United Nations Global Alliance for Civilizations (UNAOC) Forum here on Friday.

Ban Ki-moon, who was accompanied by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and UNAOC high representatives at the press conference, urged Syrian militants to immediately release the 43 Fijian peacekeeping troops they were holding hostage.

He further noted that Indonesia is always at the forefront of efforts to promote sustainable development and is the world’s third-largest democratic country, adding that it

has set a good example in organizing its general elections.

“I highly appreciate Indonesia with regard to the issue of climate change.

I have invited President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to a climate change meeting to be held in New York on September 23,” he said.

IMF board expresses confidence in Lagarde

WASHINGTON — The executive board of the International Monetary Fund expressed confidence Friday in IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde after receiving a briefing on a French corruption probe in which Lagarde is being investigated.

In a brief statement, the 24member board said it continues to have “confidence in the managing director’s ability to effectively carry out her duties.”

Lagarde called the investigation “without basis” after answering

questions before magistrates in Paris on Wednesday. She and her former chief of staff are facing questions about their role in an arbitration ruling that handed 400 million euros ($531 million) to French businessman Bernard Tapie.

Tapie had sued French bank Credit Lyonnais for its handling of the sale of his majority stake in sportswear company Adidas in the mid-1990s.

In her statement Wednesday, Lagarde said that after three years of proceedings and dozens of hours of questioning, the court had found no evidence that she had done anything wrong and that the only remaining allegation “is that I was not sufficiently vigilant.”

She said she was returning to

Washington and her work at the IMF. Under French law, the action to put Lagarde under official investigation is equivalent to a preliminary charge, which means there is reason to suspect an infraction. Investigating judges can later decide to drop the case or issue a formal charge and send the matter to trial.

In its statement, the IMF board said, “It would not be appropriate to comment on a case that has been and is currently before the French

judiciary.” But the statement said the board wanted to express its continued confidence in Lagarde’s abilities to carry out her duties.

The 24-member executive board is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the IMF. It represents the 188 nations that are members of the international lending organization.

The largest economies, such as the United States, have their own board seat, while smaller countries are represented by directors who speak for a group of countries.

Brazil’s economy slips into a recession

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s economy, once an emerging-market darling, fell into recession, according to government data released Friday, as millions of new middle class citizens tightened their belts and further dampened a creditdriven spending spree.

The results are a blow to President Dilma Rousseff, who faces an increasingly tough reelection in October. A new poll released late Friday showed her biggest rival pulling into a dead heat with her in a first-round vote — and is 10 percentage points ahead of the Rousseff in an expected runoff ballot.

The government’s statistics bureau reported that gross domestic product dropped 0.6 percent in the second quarter, in large part because of soft consumer spending. Firstquarter results also were revised downward from 0.2 percent growth to a 0.2 percent drop, showing a two-quarter slide that most economists use to define a recession.

Analysts said the economy also suffered because investors are holding off, waiting to see how the October election changes the economic winds.

Even the World Cup played a part in Brazil’s doldrums because workers took many days off, contributing to weak industrial output.

But the heart of the problem is a crisis for the government’s model of consumption-led growth, which many economists say is played out.

“Of course I’m spending a lot less!” said Maria Sousa, a 25-year-

old doing some window shopping but no buying at a mall in Rio de Janeiro. “I’m feeling less confident about my financial situation and I’m thinking more about trying to save than spend.”

London-based Capital Economics wrote in a research note that “it is consumption that has been the key driver of growth since the 2009 global financial crisis. But consumers are now struggling, in part because household balance sheets have become stretched following a decade-long credit boom.”

After blistering 7.5 percent growth in 2010, Brazil’s economy has limped along. The long, slow slide means there aren’t any regional shocks expected from the official drop into recession, but it still darkens the horizon for Brazil’s neighbors, many of whom send a large percentage of their exports into the nation.

Argentina, whose economy is in recession and where citizens face inflation of 40 percent, may be hurt the most. About one-fifth of Argentina’s exports flow into Brazil, but the amount Brazilians buy is forecast to shrink.

“It’s another headwind for Argentina, at exactly the wrong time,” said Neil Shearing, chief emerging markets economist at Capital Economics.

Brazil itself has been hurt by falling demand for its cars and big-ticket household items like refrigerators and washers in Argentina, one of the reasons Brazilian industrial output fell for the fourth consecutive quarter.

Analysts said that to return to

its days of fast growth, Brazil must undertake long-delayed reforms to its tax system, labor laws and bureaucracy.

Brazil remains a grindingly difficult place to do business. It ranked 116th on the World Bank’s most

recent “Ease of Doing Business Index,” despite being the world’s seventh-largest economy.

Brazil’s taxation regime was billed as the globe’s most complicated and burdensome, according to this year’s comparison of tax

systems in 189 nations carried out by accounting company PwC, along with the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

That adds to bottlenecks at every turn when Brazil tries to capitalize on its potential, analysts say.

Airstrikes and aid provide relief for Iraqi town

WASHINGTON — Aircraft from the United States, Australia, France and Britain dropped food and water to the beleaguered Iraqi town of Amirli, which has been under siege by Islamic State militants for nearly two months, the Pentagon said Saturday night. U.S. airstrikes supported the humanitarian mission. Thousands of Shiite Turkmen have been stranded in the farming community about 105 miles (170 kilometers) north of Baghdad. The aid came at the request of the Iraqi government, Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.

Military operations will be limited in scope and duration as needed to address the humanitarian crisis in Amirli and protect the civilians trapped in the town, Kirby said.

Instead of fleeing in the face of the Islamic State drive across northern Iraq, the Shiite Turkmens have stayed and fortified their town of 15,000 with trenches and armed positions.

While Amirli fought off the initial attack in June, it has been surrounded by the militants since mid-July. Some residents have said that the Iraqi military’s efforts to fly in food, water and other aid have not

been enough amid oppressive heat, lack of electrical power — the town’s power station was destroyed weeks ago — and shelling from the militants.

The U.S. had been watching the area closely in case a slaughter of the Turkmen appeared imminent and air support was needed, said Michael Knights, who studies Iraq and the Persian Gulf as a fellow of The Washington Institute. U.S. airstrikes will hasten the success of the relief effort on the ground, he said.

About half of the town’s population is age 15 and under while many others are elderly, sick or wounded, Knights said. “They are remarkably vulnerable, and ISIS is determined to kill as many of these people as possible,” Knights said, referring to an acronym for the Islamic State group. “As the Nazis felt about the Jews, so ISIS feels about the Shia Muslims.”

U.S. airstrikes in Iraq, which began earlier this month, have targeted Islamic State militants attacking Yazidi Iraqis on Mount Sinjar and the militant forces operating in the vicinity of Ibril and Mosul Dam. Anchor Bar wings sizzle in the deep fryer until crispy. They they’re tossed in a bowl with a mixture of butter and cayenne pepper sauce — Frank’s RedHot is the preferred brand — just before they are served alongside celery sticks and blue cheese dressing for dipping.

“They’re the original, that’s the bottom line,” said Drew Cerza, who was proclaimed Buffalo’s “wing king” after starting the wing festival in 2002.

A trip to Duff’s Famous Wings in suburban Amherst offers a different twist on the classic.

While the Anchor Bar serves up a crispy wing, Duff’s offers a softer, saucier version.

“They cover the wings after they sauce them and it really allows the sauce to penetrate the skin of the wing,” Cerza said.

Watch out for the heat here: “The mild is medium, medium’s hot, hot’s extra hot and extra hot,” said Cerza, “will kill you.”

Another option, where attention to detail is the theme, comes from the Bar Bill Tavern, just south of Buffalo in East Aurora.

The secret here — the sauce is applied to every deep-fried wing individually with a paint brush just before serving.

“They never go in a bucket,” explained bar manager Joe Morcelle.

“When you start shaking wings, it starts breaking up the crispiness.”

The individual treatment also ensures the sauce gets into every nook and cranny, Morcelle said.

And while most places pile the wings on a plate, the Bar Bill arranges them precisely this way: the five drums on the left, five flats on the right, fanned out to form a circle with the celery and blue cheese in the middle.

“You eat with your eyes,” Morcelle said (though you’ll still need plenty of napkins for your fingers).

Circling back to the city, another of the “wing king’s” favorites is found at La Nova Pizzeria, which has perfected a barbecue wing cooked over charcoal, complete with grill marks.

“They put them on the grill but they keep moving them,” Cerza said. “You’ve got to keep moving them and you can’t burn them.

It’s very tricky. It’s an art.”

The city also hosts a National Buffalo Wing Festival every Labor Day weekend. The event took its inspiration from the silver screen: When Bill Murray’s character in the 2001 movie “Osmosis Jones” set out for the National Buffalo Wing Festival — there was no such thing in real life.

Barcelona residents fight back against drunken, naked tourists

BARCELONA - A record tourism year may be a boost for Spain’s struggling economy, but in one corner of Barcelona residents are furious about drunken holidaymakers and a new fad for carousing naked in public.

People of La Barceloneta, tucked behind a beachfront which attracts millions of visitors a year, have taken to the streets several days in a row to protest against a rise in unruly tourism and to demand more control over low-cost accommodation.

The marches come after complaints of raucous late-night partying, increasing litter and drunken antics like the fad for nudity around town, captured by residents in photos published in national newspapers.

Barcelona’s city hall said it would create new inspection teams to carry out door-to-door searches in the neighbourhood to locate illegal tourist flats, which residents blame for anti-social tourism.

“We don’t want tourist flats in the neighbourhood, with or without licences,” read a statement on the Facebook page used by locals to organise the latest protest on Aug. 21.

The city government said it was sending a council member to meet residents on Friday and promised more police in the area and a phone bank to take complaints.

Barcelona, in the northeastern Catalonia region, has already had a crackdown on home rental websites for marketing illegal short-term room lets, fining Airbnb over the practice in July.

Residents of La Barceloneta, once a small fishing village, have been draping their balconies with banners calling on visitors to respect their sleep and the neighbourhood for years.

The number of international tourists to visit Catalonia - the most visited region in Spain - rose nearly 6 percent to 9.3 million in the first seven months of the year compared with 2013, data from the Industry Ministry showed on Friday.

Across Spain, there were 7 percent more foreign visitors compared with January-July in 2013, which was a record year for tourism broadly welcomed by the country as it emerges from a deep recession.

The sector accounts for roughly 10 percent of the economy.

But hotel stays by foreign tourists in July were down 1.8 percent, according to a National Statistics

Institute report.

“Tourists want to cut costs and there is growing demand for alternative accommodation,” said

The forum, therefore, was a means to affirm tangible actions toward intolerance.

“Through the UNAOC forum, we at least have a fighting chance, a potential to act,” Natalegawa affirmed.

No such thing as a bridge between Islam and the West exists. “But more of a bridge between extremism and moderation,” he said.

Natalegawa noted that extremism could be observed in every civilization and religion.

“What we are facing is threat from extremism and intolerance rather than between religions.”

BANGLI - So far, the species of fish living in the area of Lake Batur is diverse. Aside from tilapia, there are also grass carp.

This moss-eating freshwater fish is now quite demanded by local residents. Other than offering more savory flavor, the growth of this moss-eating fish also tends to be faster than that of other species.

The Head of Bangli Livestock and Fisheries Agency, Alit Parwata, said on Friday (Aug 29) the growth of grass carp was faster than the other fish. This fish only took less than six months from the spread of fingerlings to harvest. Each fish of this species could reach the weight of about 2.5 kg. “Yes, it is in great demand today as its cultivation takes shorter time,” he said.

AMLAPURA - Farmers and customary villagers of Ababi, Karangasem, are happy. Their paddy plants in the area of Tirtagangga tourist attraction are no longer attacked by mice. Mouse population has much reduced. As a result, the paddy plants grow well and the crops increase.

It was announced by Chief of Ababi customary village, Made Sudiarsa, a few days ago when met in Karangasem.

Such encouraging phenomenon happened after the implementation of cremation for jero ketut (refined name for mouse by Balinese) last year.

Sudiarsa said that since a few months ago, farmers had harvested in turn both at rice field and plantation. Similarly, the harvest was also made at paddy fields belonging to village property. “Just now, I was sent an SMS if the rice harvest at the village has been completed. But I could not come to join,” he said.

In the mouse cremation last year, he stood at the edge of cremation bade tower carried by tens of local residents.

Procession of local villagers reached about 1 km long, from the location of cremation ritual at the center of Ababi village to the cemetery of mouse in the south of the village.

There was a white rat on local tree, while smaller mice brought rice to the three. Mice did not only devour the rice, but also damaged young rice.

“After implementing the cremation, the mice are no longer attacking the paddy plants in the rice fields. They have

significantly reduced and we rarely even find them. I wonder where they go,” said another farmer, Made Gunung, from Tanah Lengis hamlet, Ababi.

The village known to have the tradition of Nyepi Luh and Nyepi Muani indeed also had mouse cremation since ancient times. The last mouse cremation was held last year. It had not been organized for more than 15 years. Local residents and farmers had long not been able to hold the mouse cremation because the budget was considered expensive for the farmers in some subak areas of the village. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Pacino does double duty at Venice Film Festival Associated Press

VENICE — Al Pacino made two trips up the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, with a pair of movies about aging, regret, giving up and letting go. But fear not — the actor says he’s not about to lower the curtain on his own career.

Pacino plays a small-town Texas locksmith with a key for everything except his own unhappiness in David Gordon Green’s “Manglehorn,” one of 20 films competing for the festival’s Golden Lion prize. And he’s an aging actor who has lost his mojo, and his grip on reality, in Barry Levinson’s “The Humbling,” screening out-of-competition at the festival.

In both films, the 74-year-old actor looks a wreck — shambling, disheveled and drawn. But speaking to journalists before Saturday’s dual premieres he was black-clad, sharply coiffed and sporting ice-blue mirrored sunglasses — every bit the movie star.

He said he could relate to his “Humbling” character’s desire to pack in the

rigors of acting — but hadn’t lost his own appetite for the job.

“I feel very lucky, I have to say,” Pacino said. “When I think of my life and my background, where I came from — like all of us I had issues as a youngster and had to overcome things, and I found something in life that I love to do.

Four decades after he burst to fame as the wiry young star of “The Panic in Needle Park” and “The Godfather,” Pacino pours his skill and soul into these two meaty autumn-years parts.

The title character of “Manglehorn” is an emotionally stunted grump who sends countless letters to a long-lost love, all of which come back marked “return to sender.” He reserves his affection for his granddaughter and his cat, rebuffing ten-

tative romantic overtures from a sweetnatured bank teller (Holly Hunter).

In “The Humbling,” waning actor Simon Axler rattles around his half-empty mansion like a Connecticut King Lear, pinning his misguided hopes of love and redemption on a much younger lesbian, played by Greta Gerwig.

Pacino said he was drawn to a character “going through this tragic fall” and struck by the story’s juxtaposition of comedy and darkness.

He said that any actor could relate to the film, which explores the way the demands of performing, the distractions of drinking and drugs and the pressures of fame “intellectually and emotionally get you to stray somewhat.”

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally tied the knot after nine years together at a secret wedding in the south of France described as a “family affair” with their six children.

The A-list Oscar winners were married by a US judge on Saturday in a small chapel at Chateau Miraval, in the picturesque village of Correns, a spokeswoman for the Tinseltown royal couple said.

George Clooney was among the celebrity friends to congratulate them.

“I’m really happy for Brad and Angie and

their whole family,” said the 53-year-old veteran bachelor, who announced his own engagement in April.

Jolie was walked down the aisle by her eldest sons Maddox and Pax. Daughters Zahara and Vivienne threw petals, while the couple’s other two children, Shiloh and Knox, were the ring bearers.

“It was very much a family affair,” the spokeswoman said in a statement.

Pitt, 50, and Jolie, 39, obtained a marriage license in California from a local US judge who traveled to France to conduct the wedding, which was described as a “non-denominational civil ceremony.”

Pitt was photographed Thursday wearing a gold band on his left ring finger during an event in Britain to promote his new World War II film “Fury,” in which he plays a battle-hardened army sergeant.
