Franklin, first black ‘Peanuts’ character, turns 50 WASHINGTON - Franklin, the first African-American to appear in the classic comic strip “Peanuts” alongside Charlie Brown and Snoopy, turns 50 on Tuesday -- a major milestone for a character born in a time of racial tensions after the slaying of Martin Luther King. The young Franklin joined the iconic line-up on July 31, 1968 during a summer of race riots and civil unrest in the wake of King’s assassination on April 4 that year. At the time, “Peanuts” was carried in hundreds of newspapers -and at the height of its popularity, exposing the foibles of humanity through the shenanigans of a group of children and one crafty beagle. Franklin’s arrival made a major splash -- and earned mainly praise. It also might not have happened

were it not for a Los Angeles teacher and mother-of-three with an idea. On April 15, Harriet Glickman wrote to ‘Peanuts’ creator Charles Schulz and suggested he include a “Negro” character into the comic strip, which had been running since 1950. “Since the death of Martin Luther King, I’ve been asking myself what I can do to help change those conditions in our society which led to the assassination and which contribute to the vast sea of misunderstanding, fear, hate and violence,” she wrote. “I’m sure one doesn’t make radical changes in so important an institution without a lot of shock waves from syndicates, clients, etc. You have, however, a stature and reputation which can withstand a great deal,” she added. Franklin, the first African-American to appear in the classic comic strip “Peanuts” alongside Charlie Brown and Snoopy, turns 50 on Tuesday.
The Paramount/Skydance production took in $61.2 million for the three-day weekend, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations, more than quadrupling the $15.1 million earned by secondplace “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.” “Impossible” has 56-year-old Cruise, who famously still does his own cliff-hanging, car-rolling stunts, ordered to track down some missing plutonium and find a terror-minded villain. Universal’s “Mamma Mia” clung to the second spot for a second straight weekend, though its take was nearly 60 percent below
its opening. With a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan, the film uses plentiful flashbacks to fill in the story of Streep’s carefree character on the only Greek island with a built-in ABBA soundtrack. In third was Sony’s “The Equalizer 2,” with Denzel Washington again playing a former black-ops agent -- and now low-profile Lyft driver -- drawn into action to avenge a friend’s death. It took in $14 million. Fourth spot went to another Sony film, “Hotel Transylvania 3:
Summer Vacation,” at $12.3 million. The animated comedy, whose voice cast includes Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, follows Count Dracula and his family as they get away from their hotel for their own vacation. In fifth was a new release, Warner Bros.’s family-friendly “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies,” at $10.4 million, which Variety called slightly disappointing given the film’s 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The first feature film based on a popular animated series, “Titans” has a voice cast including Kristen Bell, Will Arnett and Greg Cipes. (afp)

Handout / MATARAM SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM / AFP
This handout picture taken and released by the Mataram Search and Rescue Team on July 31, 2018 shows rescuers carrying out the body of an Indonesian hiker from mount Rinjani in Sembalun, West Nusa Tenggara, following an earthquake. More than 500 hikers and their guides have been successfully evacuated from an Indonesian volcano after a deadly earthquake triggered landslides that trapped them on the mountain, officials said on July 31.
Volcano hikers tell of terror after Indonesia quake
More than 500 hikers and guides stranded by landslides on an Indonesian mountain after an earthquake have returned to safety, with some recalling their terror when tonnes of rock cascaded down. The shallow 6.4-magnitude quake, which struck early Sunday on Lombok island and was followed by scores of aftershocks, triggered major landslides on Mount Rinjani, blocking the hiking routes that criss-cross it. Some 800 trekkers and their guides were on the mountain when the quake struck including citizens from the United States, France, the Netherlands, Thailand, Germany and 21 other countries, according to search and rescue officials. Hundreds managed to find a
way down on Sunday and over 500 more reached safety Monday night. While most were able to pick their way down the mountain on foot, at least three arrived at Sembalun village on the lower slopes by helicopter, according to officials. Some returned with harrowing tales of being caught out by the quake, which killed 17 people across the holiday island including one on the mountain. Australian hiker Stanley Yu said the ground began to shake about
20 minutes after his group reached Rinjani’s peak. “The earthquake lasted about 10-20 seconds. After that everybody was rushing down,” he told AFP. “On the way down there was another earthquake and that made everyone panic -- it was pretty scary.” One Thai tourist, who reached the foot of the mountain Tuesday morning, felt the ground shake beneath her sleeping bag. “I felt the earth move... and thought ‘Huh? What’s happening?’” she said. “I got out of my bed and then I saw a landslide (with) rocks falling down.” A male friend said he watched parts of Rinjani’s slopes collapse. “The whole mountain,
rocks, fell down -- I was a bit afraid,” he said.
- ‘Tired but in good condition’ The remaining 500 or so hikers were able to start climbing down on Monday after guides discovered an alternate route that was unaffected by the landslides. The last three trekkers -- two porters and a guide -- are expected to arrive at the base of the mountain by 7pm local time, said Agus Hendra Sanjaya, a spokesman for the search and rescue agency on the island’s main city of Mataram. “We have searched the (Rinjani) area, there are no more hikers,” he told AFP. “We started this morning at 6am
and will continue to monitor the situation for the next three days from our base at the foot of the mountain in Sembalun.” Most of the trekkers reached the base of the mountain by late Monday evening, according to I Gusti Lanang Wiswananda, another spokesman from the Mataram search and rescue agency.
