Sitcom creators mine laughs from their real lives

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Got a goofy older brother? Parents you still live with even though you’re grown up? An unconventional friendship? If so, you’re too late to turn those ideas into a hit sitcom. But while you comb your life for something else to fuel a comedy that a network will love, consider three fall sitcoms spawned from the personal lives of their creators. CBS’ “Partners” explores the lifelong friendship of Louis, who’s gay, and Joe, who’s straight, as they navigate their architecture business and their respective romantic ties. Their best-friends dynamic is inspired by the friendship of Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, who met in high school and, after partnering as TV producers, co-created shows including the megahit “Will & Grace.” There’s no attempt to hide the lineage of Fox’s “Ben & Kate.” It’s the tale of a freewheeling brother, Ben, who comes back into the life of his single-mother younger sister, Kate, to serve as a surrogate dad while continuing his lifelong role as a mischievous child. The show is based on the relationship of its creator, Dana Fox, with her own big brother, whose name is, yes, Ben. Meanwhile, ABC’s “How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life” finds a young mom from a broken marriage seeking refuge at her parents’ with her young

daughter. It was drawn from the domestic situation of creator Claudia Lonow, who well into adulthood and despite career success (including producing the sitcom “Less than Perfect”), continues to live with parents she describes as “charismatic,” ‘’super entertaining” and “very weird.” “I’ve been living there for 15 years, and I’ve been (developing) the show for about 12,” Lonow told reporters this

week at the Television Critics Association conference. Like Polly (played by Sarah Chalke), who descends on TV parents Brad Garrett and Elizabeth Perkins, “I did show up at their doorstep and say, ‘I hope this isn’t a bad time for YOU, because it is for ME.’ “They reacted like any loving mother and stepfather would,” Lenow recalled, and took her and her daughter in.

NEW YORK — Kimberley Locke wants to fill that vacant judge’s chair on American Idol. The season 2 finalist feels having a former contestant on the show can bring renewed interest to the popular TV singing competition. “I would love to sit in that chair and, you know, give some advice from the contestant’s standpoint because I’ve been on that stage and I know what it’s like,” Locke said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. and Charlie Sheen. Regardless of if Locke were to get the call, she loves the idea of former contestants coming back to judge. Adam Lambert has also been vocal about his willingness to be a judge on “Idol.” Since finishing behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken at the end of the show’s second season, Locke embarked on a solo career, releasing two albums on Curb Records. Locke recently started her own label, IAM Entertainment. Her first single, “Finally Free” came out on Tuesday. She plans to release another single this year and a full album early next year.

The seed supply was brought in from a number of regencies such as the Badung Regency.

“By and large, the centers of production start planting in November and enter their harvest in January. As a result, the soybean production in Badung can meet the needs of soybean seeds of farmers in Denpasar for planting season in February,” he explained. He said that in the period of 2013, Denpasar municipality planed to change the pattern of aids provided for farmers from soybean seed to NPK fertilizer. In 2012, the area planted with soybean in Denpasar reached about 300 hectares. Of that amount, the average production

reached 2 tons per hectare. “As a rule, such production is totally absorbed. Even, the amount was not adequate for the business sector of tofu and soybean cakes processing in Denpasar,” he said. Meanwhile, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali recorded that soybean production of Bali within the past five years had increased by 0.26 percent per year. The road to Kiduling Kreteg Temple, Besakih, Karangasem, right at the end of the bridge, collapsed about a year ago. It was broken and has not been repaired. To facilitate the devotees who want to worship to Kiduling Kreteg Temple with a shorter access, they requested in order the road could be repaired soon. It was revealed by a legislator of Karangasem House, I Wayan Sekep Aryana, Monday (Jul 30) in Karangasem. In the last recess, he absorbed a lot of people’s aspiration asking the improvement for the broken road at the end of the bridge connecting the road of Besakih Kangin to Kiduling Kreteg Temple. So far, the residents of Besakih Kangin should take a detour when going to Palak hamlet and surrounding area of Kiduling Kreteg Temple as the road was broken. It was also very hazardous for people who did not know about the broken road or devotees from outside Besakih, especially at night. Moreover, the broken road was not equipped with a safeguard. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Karangasem House, I Gede Dana, when chairing the meeting of budget agency said that government should do efficiency in the use of budget. So far, the budget for indirect expenditure or non-capital expenditure had showed a very imbalanced portion, reaching more than 70 percent of the total Karangasem Regional Budget worth IDR 800 billion. Since many people asked for the procurement or construction of infrastructure such as the opening, hardening or repair of road,

On the other hand, the acting Regional Secretary of Karangasem, I Wayan Arta Dipa, said few days ago in Karangasem there had been a plan to repair the broken road at the end of the bridge from Besakih Kangin to Kiduling Kreteg Temple. The road section belonging to Bali Province and the fund was from BKK. However, the funding allocated by the province was only IDR 350 million whereas, said Arta Dipa, based on the study made by the Karangasem Public Works it was required IDR 500 million to IDR 600 million. On that account, the fund of IDR 350 million was actually inadequate. Due to restricted funds, he expected the quality of broken road repaired would be constantly good, so that it lasted longer and could be utilized. (013)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NASA to athletic Mars rover: ‘Stick the landing’ Associated Press Writer

PASADENA, Calif. — It’s NASA’s most ambitious and expensive Mars mission yet — and it begins with the red planet arrival late Sunday of the smartest interplanetary rover ever built. Also the most athletic. Like an Olympic gymnast, it needs to “stick the landing.” It won’t be easy. The complicated touchdown NASA designed for the Curiosity rover is so risky it’s been described as “seven minutes of terror” — the time it takes to go from 13,000 mph to a complete stop. Scientists and engineers will be waiting anxiously 154 million miles away as the spacecraft plunges through Mars’ thin atmosphere, and in a new twist, attempts to slowly lower the rover to the bottom of a crater with cables. By the time Earthlings receive first word of its fate, it will have planted six wheels on the ground — or tumbled itself into a metal graveyard. If it succeeds, a video camera aboard the rover will have captured the most dramatic minutes for the first filming of a landing on another planet. “It would be a major technological step forward if it works. It’s a big gamble,” said American University space policy analyst Howard McCurdy. The future direction of Mars exploration is hanging on the outcome of this $2.5 billion science project to determine whether the environment was once suitable for microbes to live. Previous missions have found ice and signs that water once flowed. Curiosity will drill into rocks and soil in search of carbon and other elements. Named for the Roman god of war, Mars is unforgiving with a hostile history of swallowing man-made spacecraft. It’s tough to fly there and even tougher to touch down. More than half of humanity’s attempts to land on Mars have ended in disaster. Only the U.S. has tasted success, but there’s no guarantee this time. “You’ve done everything that you can think of to ensure mission success, but Mars can still throw you a curve,” said former NASA Mars czar Scott Hubbard who now teaches at Stanford University. The Mini Cooper-sized spacecraft traveled 8½ months to reach Mars. In a sort of celestial acrobatics, Curiosity will twist, turn and perform other maneuvers throughout the seven-minute thrill ride to the surface. Why is NASA attempting such a daredevil move? It had little choice. Earlier spacecraft dropped to the Martian surface like a rock, swaddled in airbags, and bounced to a stop. Such was the case with the much smaller and lighter rovers Spirit and Opportunity in 2004. At nearly 2,000 pounds, Curiosity is too heavy, so engineers had to come up with a new way to land. Friction from the thin atmosphere isn’t enough to slow down the spacecraft without some help.

Computer game aims to zap teen depression

Long viewed as a contributing factor in teenage isolation, computer games are now being used to treat adolescent depression in an innovative New Zealand programme. Rather than simply encouraging players to engage in mindless destruction, the SPARX video game attempts to teach teenagers how to deal with depression using a psychological approach known as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Just as importantly, its creators set out to make the game exciting for those teenagers who are often reluctant to seek counselling and bored by well-meaning

advice on how to cope with depression. The result is a role-playing fantasy game, where teenagers adopt a warrior avatar and get to blast negative thoughts with fireballs while trying to save the world from sinking into a mire of pessimism and despair. Project leader Sally Merry, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Auckland University, said the unconventional approach had proved popular with teenagers, allowing them to address their issues in privacy and at their own pace. “You can deal with mental health problems in a way that doesn’t have to be deadly serious,” she said. “The therapy doesn’t have to be depressing in and of itself.

We’re aiming to make it fun.” International studies consistently show New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the developed world and Merry said she was keen to make treatment for depression more accessible. “The problem of depression in young people is an international one, it’s common and mostly untreated,” she said. Expedition to Map Where Florida Keys Fish Breed

Researchers set sail this past Thursday (July 26) off the coast of south Florida to map areas where fish are breeding. Their findings will help scientists manage and set limits for fishing in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which includes the waters off the Keys and stretches west to the Dry Tortugas, islands (and a national park) about 67 miles (108 kilometers) west of Key West. On the expedition, scientists will use various types of sonar to provide high-resolution maps of the seafloor and search for fish, to learn more about each spawning site and what they have in common. Divers will also take a look beneath the waves to verify sonar readings, and use remotely operated vehicles to make observations in deeper areas. The cruise came about in response to public comments, during a regulatory review, that more information was needed about fish spawning habitats and how to protect them, said Sean Morton, with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. “The scientific results of this cruise will help inform the public and guide management decisions as we continue to look at sanctuary marine zones and regulations,” Morton said in a statement. The sanctuary’s marine zoning and regulatory review is a multiyear public process to determine whether existing sanctuary boundaries, regulations and marine zones are adequate to address threats to marine life. Meanwhile, the middle Tawur Balik Sumpah was held on Monday and officiated over by four high priests, respectively consisting of Ratu Pedanda Siwa from Griya Menara, Munggu, Ida Pedanda Budha from Griya Jadi Tabanan, Ida Resi Bhujangga from Griya Sempidi and Ida Jero Gede from Sibang, Badung. Interestingly, the activity was attended by a number of regents in Bali, such as the Regent of Badung, Tabanan and Karangasem, and the Regent Banyuwangi, Abdulah Aswar Anas, former Governor of Bali Dewa Beratha and CEO of Bali Post Media Group (KMB) ABG Satria Naradha. The ceremony was ended with prayers en masse. Oentoeng Margiyanto added that pinnacle of the Ngenteg Linggih ritual would be held on full moon of the second month in Balinese calendar or August 2. “This grandiose ritual serves as a driving force for Hindus in Banyuwangi to improve their faith and understanding on the religious teachings,” he said after the ceremony. Closure of the ritual would be held on August 11. Serving as the ritual committee was the senior figure of Mengwi Palace doubling as the Regent of Badung, AA Gede Agung. The Agung Blambangan Temple venerated by the Hindus of Banyuwangi consisting of 24 subdistricts is believed to be closely related to the ancestors of Mengwi Palace. Historically, a princess of Blambangan was married by a descendant of Mengwi Palace circa 1717 AD. Even, when the Dutch implemented its dividing and ruling policy, the Kingdom of Mengwi took over Blambangan from the attack of Buleleng Kingdom. Meanwhile, the anniversary or pujawali of the Blambangan Temple is usually coinciding with Kuningan Day. The Regent Banyuwangi, Abdulah Aswar Anas welcomed the grandiose ritual in the Agung Blambangan Temple. According to him, the Banyuwangi Government gave freedom to Balinese people to participate in developing the Hindus in Banyuwangi because Blambangan and Bali had historical ties. “To preserve the historical sites, we have put forward a legislation draft on cultural heritage. Hopefully, the site heritage of Blambangan Kingdom can remain intact,” said the Regent Anas. He also explained that based on the thesis of a Dutch historian from Leiden, in fact the Blambangan Kingdom had a more complete site than that of Majapahit. Not all Dawan Kaler are animal breeders yet many of them do have cages and put their pigs at a moor. Meanwhile Head of Animal Husbandry Agency, Tjok Oka, explained that this aid is an initiative to solve poverty problems moreover this was the people’s request so the poverty management team through this Agency gave 80 piglets with budget IDR 50 million. Relating to the supervision, the Agency will be always supervising them as this help is part of the Agency’s responsibility moreover the receiver name has been known and has its Regent Authority Letter. Meanwhile from what’s seen on the field, the aid caused a crowd yet to avoid any mess, workers than divide it by calling their names who became the receiver. One of them, Nengah Latri (72) when met on location admitted happy and will not sell it also will try breed it to help Latri’s family economy moreover Latri hoped this kind of help won’t stop in just giving the piglets to them. Monday (Jul 30), the Denpasar Transportation Agency officials were forced to impose traffic ticket to nine trucks because the notice delivered so far was ignored. Division Head of Control and Operational of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, Ketut Sriawan, accompanied by the Spokesperson of the Denpasar Municipality, Dewa Gede Rai, said the nine stubborn trucks were directly imposed with traffic ticket because his party had reminded the truck drivers again and again about the prohibition of parking. He said that most of the trucks imposed with traffic ticket had license plate of outside Bali such as Jakarta, Surabaya, NTB, Pekalongan and Malang. “After installation of the parking prohibition sign on Jalan Mahendradatta, we have outreached the

truck drivers to avoid parking on the west side of the road. For empty trucks and those still containing freights before unloaded in their warehouse are still allowed to park on the east side of the road. In reality, there are many stubborn truck drivers so that we take firm action,” said Sriawan. Sriawan added the decisive action against the violators of parking prohibition sign was not only implemented on Jalan Mahendradatta. It also absolutely applied to all existing roads in Denpasar. He affirmed the drivers violating the sign had been imposed with traffic ticket, while their documents such as the

vehicle test certificate and vehicle registration were seized. Other than on Jalan Mahendradatta, his party would also target the other main roads being prone to traffic jam because the drivers parked carelessly on the roadside. “Hopefully, all the parties increase their awareness to jointly create a traffic order in Denpasar,” he expected. Denpasar Municipality through the Transportation Agency, he said, had been attempting to find out a land for parking space of trucks that had not unloaded to their respective warehouse. However, such an effort could not be realized as there was still coordination with related agencies. “We’ve tried in order the trucks that have not unloaded their freights do not park on the side of main roads as it can disrupt the traffic flows. BERLIN — U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and his German counterpart stressed the need for coordinated action Monday in the face of the eurozone debt crisis and faltering global growth, but left open what joint steps Europe and the United States would take to shore up the world economy in the coming months. Geithner traveled to the German North Sea island of Sylt for informal talks with Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, before meeting later Monday with Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank. Geithner and Schaeuble praised efforts by Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy to turn their debt-ridden economies around, and voiced optimism about economic reforms meant to deepen integration among the 17 eurozone members. The joint statement made no reference to Greece, which has struggled to implement the reform package agreed with its creditors. The country faces the possibility a chaotic exit from the common currency area if it fails to meet its bailout conditions. Geithner and Schaeuble “emphasized the need for ongoing international cooperation and coordination” and stated that the U.S. and Germany would “continue to cooperate closely with their partners when advancing the policy agenda in autumn to further stabilize global and European economies.” The U.S. treasury secretary later met with Draghi for about an hour in Frankfurt. LONDON - Revelations of lax anti-money laundering controls at HSBC are “shameful and embarrassing” for Europe’s biggest bank, its boss said on Monday, and it may have to pay out well over $2 billion for the scandal and in compensation for UK mis-selling. HSBC set aside $700 million to cover fines and other costs after a U.S. Senate report criticized it this month for letting clients shift funds from dangerous and secretive countries, notably Mexico. Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver told reporters the ultimate cost could be “significantly higher”. “What happened in Mexico and the U.S. is shameful, it’s embarrassing, it’s very painful for all of us in the firm,” he said on a conference call. “We need to execute on the compliance changes and then prove ourselves worthy and rebuild this over a number of years. There are no quick and easy fixes.” The Senate report criticized a “pervasively polluted” culture at the bank

and said HSBC’s Mexican operations had moved $7 billion into its U.S. operations between 2007 and 2008. “The firm clearly lost its way in this regard and it’s right that we apologize,” said Gulliver. “Colleagues internally have been aware that this is the backdrop of why we had to change the firm.” The provision ate into first-half underlying profits, which fell 3 percent from a year earlier to $10.6 billion, excluding gains from assets sales and losses on the value of its own debt. HSBC is also one of more than a dozen banks under scrutiny in a global interest rate-rigging scandal that has rocked the sector and further damaged the reputation of bankers following criticism of their culture and standards. “It’s very unfortunate and deeply concerning that even the banks considered more secure such as HSBC are so seriously at risk,” said a top 30 investor in HSBC. “And the news is still coming out - we have yet to see the impact, if any, of the Libor investigation and HSBC’s role in that. It’s hard to see how much more bad news the markets can take,” said the investor, who asked not to be named.

“The price rise is due to drought conditions in the United States, from where the commodity is imported, and it has affected soybean supply in Denpasar,” said Ni Made Suri, one of the retailers, here on Tuesday. “Although retailers have enough supply of soybean to meet consumers’ demand, they have increased the price from Rp1,000 to Rp9,000 per kg this week,” she added. Made Suri stated that Denpasar had adequate supply of high-quality soybean, which came mainly from distributors in Surabaya, East Java. Shaw, a married father of two, is appealing the sentence and posted bail pending the appeal hearing. Prostitution is legal in Singapore, but in the scandal which erupted this year, 51 men ranging from their early 20s to late 40s have been charged under a 2008 law that makes it a crime to pay for sex with a woman under 18. The list of men charged with paying for sex with the same underage prostitute includes businessmen, civil servants and uniformed officers. The maximum sentence is seven years in prison and a fine. District court judge See Kee Oon said he was “unable to agree that there was an honest and reasonable mistake” committed by Shaw, and therefore had to impose a sentence which would serve as a strong deterrent to customers of underage prostitution. “The factual context showed that the accused was looking for an 18-year-old for his liaison,” See said. “What he implicitly must have recognised was the risk that she might not be 18.” The judge rejected Shaw’s defence of having been duped by a now defunct website advertising the prostitute’s services, which stated that she was 18, and noted that he never asked for proof of her age. “He was reckless. Police have arrested a teenager in connection with malicious Twitter messages directed at Tom Daley after the young Olympic diver missed out on a medal. Officers arrested the 17-year-old at a guesthouse in Weymouth on Tuesday hours after British pin-up Daley received the messages referring to his dead father on Monday. A Dorset Police police spokesman said the youth was arrested “on suspicion of malicious communication. He is currently helping police with their inquiries.” Daley, 18, and his Great Britain diving partner fell from the top spot and out of the medals on Monday after a botched fourth dive in the 10m synchronised platform diving event. They finished fourth while China took the gold. Daley shortly afterwards retweeted a message from user Rileyy_69 which said: “You let your dad down i hope you know that.” Daley responded by tweeting: “After giving it my all... you get idiots sending me this...” Daley’s father Rob died last year from brain cancer.

Then, just like that, she turned on a big smile and worked the room like a pro. Thanks to this Colorado teenager, America’s swim hopes are back on track at the Olympics. Michael Phelps has yet to win a gold medal, and Ryan Lochte’s star has dimmed just a bit. So it was Franklin providing a much-needed boost to swimming’s powerhouse nation, coming back less than 14 minutes after swimming a semifinal heat to win the first gold medal of what figures to be a dazzling career. “Indescribable,” the 17-year-old Franklin said after rallying to win the 100-meter backstroke Monday. “I still can’t believe that happened. I don’t even know what to think. I saw my parents’ reaction on the screen and I just started bawling. I can’t even think right now.” After finishing up the semis of the 200 freestyle, she hopped out of the pool and headed to the diving well for a quick warmdown.

She didn’t even have time to make it to the practice pool, not when her bigger event was coming right up. Even Phelps was amazed at Franklin’s stamina, saying he had never done back-to-back races that close together at such a major meet. His quickest turnaround was about a half-hour. “She’s a racer and she knows what to do,” Phelps said. Matt Grevers kept the gold medals coming for the U.S. in rat-a-tat fashion, following up Franklin’s win with one of his own in the men’s 100 back. The morning rush-hour stoppage on the Central Line marked the return of fears about London’s creaking transport network after the first three days of full competition at the Olympics were relatively trouble-free. “The suspension is due to a train being taken out of service at Leyton (one stop from the Olympic Park) after the driver reported smelling smoke,” said a spokesman for Transport for London (TfL), the capital transport authority. “This has been investigated and all passengers left the train and station without reported problems.”

India are looking for better days ahead at the Olympics after shooter Gagan Narang picked up the country’s first medal, a bronze, at the London Games. Having drawn a blank on the first two days of competition, India finally made it to the medals board on Monday when Narang finished third in the men’s 10m air rifle competition. It was at the same event in Beijing four years ago that Abhinav Bindra won the country’s first ever individual Olympic gold medal, raising hopes that there was more to Indian sport than just cricket. Bindra failed to make the eight-man final in London, while Narang stepped on the podium after losing at the qualification stage in the previous two Olympics in Athens and Beijing. Narang’s bronze earned frontpage coverage and Sports Minister Ajay Maken, who is in London, was confident the medal was just

the spark India needed to make a mark. “One medal by Gagan has totally changed the mood of the contingent! Everyone is so ecstatic and motivated!,” Maken tweeted. Maken told reporters in London that Narang, like all other Indian medal winners, would be offered a top government job as a reward for his efforts. The entire Olympic contingent will be offered more junior coaching jobs in state-run sports institutions. “India goes gaga over Gagan,” said The Times of India, while The Hindu newspaper wrote that the medal had “infused life into the Indian challenge”. India had their best ever finish in Beijing in 2008 when wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijender Singh added bronze medals to Bindra’s gold. The duo spearhead the challenge of living up to the expectations of Indian Olympic officials, who had predicted a higher tally in London before the Games began. India are looking to win medals in shooting, archery, badminton, boxing and wrestling where the main hopefuls are still in contention.
