NEW YORK - Madame Tussauds is celebrating the release of the new “Ghostbusters” film next month with a hyper-reality experience that lets guests to the wax museum fight paranormal crime themselves.

It includes wax figures of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wigg, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones’ characters in the supernatural comedy and combines virtual reality, interactive effects and a physical set so fans feel like they are in the movie.

“Hyper-reality is blending the virtual world and the physical world

together. So imagine a physical set that’s built and you’ve got all of your VR gear on, you’ve got a proton pack, you’re carrying a proton gun,” explained Eric Fluet, head of marketing and sales of Madame Tussauds, New York.

“But all you’re seeing is the virtual world, but if you see a chair

you can touch it and there is actually a chair there.”

Sony Pictures and The Void, an immersive entertainment company, teamed up with Madame Tussauds to create the experience.

The original 1984 film became a cult movie classic and spawned a 1989 sequel.

Ghostbusters: Dimension, the hyper-reality portion of the experience, will open on July 1. The new “Ghostbusters” film will hit theaters on July 14. (rtr)

Bali ‘s tourism promotion needs rebranding

DENPASAR - Bali’s tourism motto “Shanti, Shanti, Shanti” has made very little impact in terms of promoting Bali as a tourist destination. Despite the fact that Bali remains at the top of the tourism ladder, branding remains

a significant way of introducing Bali to new tourists and so it still requires attention.

Last three years, Bali’s export increases

DENPASAR - Over the past three years, the exports of Bali slightly increased with the products including accessories, garments, coffee, processed fish and processed wood. Chief Representative of Bank Indonesia (BI) of Bali, Dewi Setyowati, said on Tuesday (Jun. 28) that local government has to find a way, assist farmers when negotiating, find the easier way, look for a market as well as develop a marketing system and product diversification.

the problems faced by businesses.

On the banking side, she also expressed the same thing, namely an increase in export.

in Bali because Bali produces more handicraft products. Besides, Bank Mandiri does not restrict the export financing because it also encourages exports. Export is one of the supporting sectors of the economy of Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Putu Sudiartana threatened to be sacked from the House

Tutik and Supadma have chance to replace DENPASAR - Sting operations by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) dragged the name of the member of Commission III of the central House of Representatives, I Putu Sudiartana.

This Democrat of Bali constituent is touted to be caught in a series of sting operations (OTT), Tuesday (Jun. 28). Sudiartana or Putu Leong is not the first cadre of Democrat from Bali entangled in corruption cases. Previously, Jero Wacik was canceled to be inaugurated into the member of the House of Representatives for being suspected of corruption.

“I have just received the information (yesterday—Ed). We were surprised and regretted it happened because the state official must actually become our expectation as a role model, an example for doing well,” said Chairman of the Democratic Party of Bali, I Made Mudarta, when confirmed on Wednesday (Jun. 29).

According to Mudarta, what experienced by Putu Leong is presumption of innocence. The KPK has not yet published any of faults committed by his cadre. However, he asserted that it is very personal or purely personal.

“A political party is just like a country, where the country has many subjects. If there are people committing crimes like stealing, robbing, trafficking drug and raping, the culprit is legally wrong, and not the country is wrong. It is similar with political parties, including the Democratic Party,” he explained.

Mudarta added that there is a mechanism in the party if Putu Leong has proved guilty and declared to be a suspect by the KPK. In this case, through the central executive board (DPP) through the Honorary

Board will sack the concerned party leadership’s structure. As is known, Putu Leong is currently the Deputy Treasurer of the central executive board of the Democratic Party.

“Likewise he is sacked in the House, and it is the integrity pact having been signed by all the cadres of the Democrats, while membership card of the party (KTA) is not.

Mudarta emphasized that the mechanism of dismissal from the structure of party officials and members of parliament fully lies in the authority of central executive board. His counterpart in regional executive board (DPD) Bali will support anything decided by the central executive board. If he is sacked in the parliament, there are two cadres of the Democrat likely to replace Putu Leong.

“According to the law, the next candidates obtaining most votes are Tutik Kusumawardani and Putu Supadma Rudana. Which one can fill in the vacant position are Mrs. Tutik in the first list and the next is Putu Supadma Rudana,” he said.

Mudarta did not dismiss when Tutik Kusumawardani was previously predicted to replace the position of Jero Wacik. However, until now Tutik is never sworn while waiting for the permanent legal status of Jero Wacik.

In the meantime, the former Democratic cadre, Gede Pasek Suardika, admitted to be apprehensive because he is familiar with the figure Putu Leong. Due to this case, Bali is politically slapped at the national level. Of the nine seats allotted in the parliament, there are remaining seven effective seats.

Two others are ineffective due to corruption cases, and both of the

Democrats.

“It makes me sad because the struggle of our colleagues in the region is trying to maintain the dignity of the Democrats but has not been followed up by them in the center. Surely this condition disrupts Bali because it reduces political access, and two chairs have great political value,” he said.

Logically, said Pasek, Chairman of the central executive board of the Democratic Party should be responsible for allowing this condition. According to him, similar thing happened again and it is inseparable from the failure of leadership. Not to mention, the substitute to Jero Wacik (entangled in earlier corruption case) has not been sworn in until now.

“It is the task of the central executive board to approach Mr. Jero to make a letter of resignation, or the like, it could be so. The mechanism is not necessary to wait for the permanent legal status. No other parties apply such a mechanism, but it can. It happens because the central executive board does not work,” he criticized.

Now, when Putu Leong is also detained, said Pasek, it means there are no more people’s representatives of the Democratic Party whereas it has a large number of votes. Therefore, it would be wise to inaugurate two substitutes at once for the sake of Bali.

“In the history, there has never been one faction with two chairs originating in the same electoral district, both replaced due to corruption cases. Apparently it has never occurred. It is difficult to say what it is called, I do not understand. What kind of phenomenon it is, so that I am confused. It makes me stunned,” he added.

Pasek added that the Democratic

Party, especially in Bali, will face tough challenges because of this matter. Democracy as the spirit of the Democratic Party must be restored again. According to him, the spirit has now disappeared and become an aristocracy, even cartelization. Participation at the lower level reduces because everything involves intervention.

“So, it is impossible to have different opinion and the dynamics of

Exporters disrupted by hackers, Losses reach thousands of US dollars GIANYAR - Behind the challenges of global economic slowdown, Gianyar exporters are now faced with hackers’ disruption.

Due to this disruption, the buyers originally wishing to buy local products of Gianyar even suffered losses of up to tens of thousands of US dollars. This condition is also considered to have tarnished the image of Indonesian exporters, especially Gianyar.

Chairman of the Gianyar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), I Wayan Gede Arsania, who met on Wednesday (Jun. 29) said that the hacker disruption has occurred since long time ago. For instance, they disrupted the communications via email, between the Bali exporters and overseas buyers.

“When we have dealt with one buyer overseas and would like to make transaction, the hackers take action by changing our email address,” he said.

Last disruption he experienced was on Kuningan Day in February 2016. At that time, one of the buyers wanted to buy local handicraft of Gianyar. Due to hacker disruption, the exporter should experience loss in fantastic amount. “The last, one of our buyers suffered a loss as much as USD 32,000 or nearly IDR 350 million because his email was hacked so that the money was

transferred wrongly,” he said.

Gede Arsania continued that after that a similar incident happened again, but it was more quickly realized, so that the buyer has not had time to make transaction. “My email was hacked up to four times. Thankfully, our buyer quickly realized so that it could be communicated,” he said.

This condition was then shared with the members of exporter community. In fact, a number of other exporters in Bali also experienced similar incident with varied amount of losses. “We had questioned about this matter to bank authority, but it could not provide a solution. Similarly, we already reported this case to police department, but until now there has been no progress,” he said.

Gede Arsania asserted that other than causing losses up to fantastic amount, the presence of hackers have already affected the image of the export market of Indonesia, especially Bali. From this condition, he considered it important to establish a special agency that can provide protection and guarantees for exporters.

“Definitely it affected the image of the Indonesian market because many overseas buyers become restless when purchasing our products. On that account, it is required to set a special agency that can provide protection,” he said. (kmb35)

Lifeguard post at Labuan Sait damaged due to age

MANGUPURA - Condition of lifeguard post building on Labuan Sait Beach, Pecatu village, South Kuta, is quite alarming. The post where lifeguard oversees the activities of visitors on the beach looks to have rotted due to the age and tidal waves.

Damages to one of the supporting tourism facilities in Badung district can be seen in the warehouse used to store goods. The building without being equipped with door is now in very fragile condition.

Supervisor of Lifeguard for Uluwatu Sector, Wayan Somer, said on Wednesday (Jun. 29) the damage to the lifeguard post has been seen since three years ago. Until now, the condition gradually begins porous.

“Its condition is getting worse when the phenomenon of high waves occurred recently. Pounding of the waves occurred during three days even reached the second floor of the building,” he said.

Wayan Somer admitted to be worried when doing activities in the building. Moreover, his fellow decided to do surveillance in the beach area. “We are worried and all the officers prefer to do activities outside the post,” he said.

The lifeguard team on duty, said Wayan Somer, does not place items or equipment in the building due to the increasingly porous condition. “We do not dare to put anything in the post. So, the goods like the rubber boat and so forth are temporarily dropped off on Muaya Beach,” he said.

On that account, he hoped the authorities to immediately conduct renovations on the lifeguard building on the Labuan Sait Beach. “When to be repaired, I’d like to propose the warehouse design can be changed from facing west to south. Thus, I think it would be

The United States, which is a close ally of the Philippines and is concerned about China’s expansive South China Sea claims, reiterated its backing for The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration and urged a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

Manila is contesting China’s historical claim to about 90 percent of the South China Sea, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Several Southeast Asian states have overlapping claims in the sea and the dispute has sparked concerns of a military confrontation that could disrupt global trade. In a lengthy statement, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Manila’s unilateral approach flouted international law.

“I again stress that the arbitration court has no jurisdiction in the case and on the relevant matter, and should not hold hearings or make a ruling,” he said.

He said: “On the issue of territory and disputes over maritime delineation, China does not accept any dispute resolution from a third party and does not accept any dispute resolution forced on China.”

In Manila, the foreign ministry said the Philippines would “fully respect” the tribunal’s ruling and hoped members of the international community would do the same.

U.S. state department spokeswoman Anna Richey-Allen reiterated U.S. backing for the court. “We support the peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea, including the use of international legal mechanisms such as arbitration.”

But China’s official Xinhua news agency said the court was a “law-abusing tribunal” that would only worsen the dispute.

“Manila fails to see that such an arbitration will only stir up more trouble in the South China Sea, which doesn’t serve the interests of the concerned parties in the least,” it said. (rtr)

MANILA - Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the Philippines’ 16th president on Thursday, capping the unlikely journey of a provincial city mayor whose brash man-of-the-people style and pledges to crush crime swamped establishment rivals in last month’s election.

After making his pledge at the presidential palace in Manila, with one hand on the Bible, Duterte delivered a speech in which he promised a “relentless” and “sustained” fight against corruption, criminality and illegal drugs.

However, he said these ills were only symptoms of a disease cutting into the moral fibre of society.

“I see the erosion of the people’s trust in our country’s leaders, the erosion of faith in our judicial system, the erosion of confidence in the capacity of our public servants to make the people’s lives better, safer and healthier,” he said.

Duterte tapped into voters’ disgust with the Philippines’ political elite and the failure of successive governments to tackle poverty and inequality, drawing comparisons with Donald Trump and the rise of assertive populists across the globe.

But his defiance of convention has raised concern that economic growth in the Philippines, the fastest

of Southeast Asia’s five main economies under his predecessor, could be at risk on his watch.

The political shake-up also adds to uncertainty about Manila’s position in a sometimes-bitter dispute with China over sovereignty in the South China Sea, a key global trade route.

China’s official Xinhua news agency said President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Duterte, saying he was “willing to work with Duterte to push for improvement of relations between the two countries”.

Duterte’s new defence minister told Reuters this week that crushing Islamist militants in the south of the country would take precedence over South China Sea disputes.

Duterte’s election campaign focused almost entirely on the scourges of crime, drug abuse and corruption, and voters were not deterred by repeated warnings from “the Punisher”, in profanity-peppered speeches, to have offenders killed.

In his maiden speech, the president conceded that many believe his methods “are unorthodox and verge on the illegal”. However, the 71-year-old former prosecutor said he knew right from wrong and would abide by the rule of law. (rtr)

archive called The Living New Deal is bringing the national scope of Roosevelt-era public works sites into sharper focus. More than 10,000 site locations are tagged to a Google map for browsing.

The crowdsourced archive started as a student project and is hosted by the Department of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley.

Susan Ives, who works for the project from Mill Valley, California, said amateur contributors have helped identify public works buildings where plaques and labels went missing through neglect and as Roosevelt’s progressive political ideals fell out of favor during the Cold War years.

“They were taken down when

the pendulum swung to the right,” she said. When it comes to national parks and monuments, meanwhile, many devotees of New Deal history want that era’s artifacts to be given a larger stage of their own, after serving for some 80 years as the backdrop to other wonders of nature and human history.

The National Park Service already juggles those competing missions at Bandelier National Monument, 18 miles from Santa Fe, where the main attraction is ancestral Native American cliff dwellings carved into soft rock.

The monument also is home to a cluster of 31 support buildings created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s that mimics a small New Mexican village, and is

No gifts, no official cars for Lebaran

The 100-year anniversary of the National Park Service is igniting new interest in the majestic Spanish-pueblo themed building that Lopez and other “CCC boys” built, along with other remote cabins, furniture and artwork of the 1930s that transformed and popularized national and state parks while putting millions of impoverished Americans back to work.

The Old Santa Fe Trail Building, nicknamed after its address alongside the former frontier migration and supply route, was stocked with hand-carved furniture and Native American pottery and paintings commissioned under the Work Projects Administration from local artists.

It is now celebrated as a graceful landmark that blends with the surrounding high-desert landscape — while serving as a testament to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal public works projects.

That legacy is slipping from living memory. Lopez, who turned 100 in January, is the only known surviving member of the work crew that laid the foundation and hoisted hand-carved wooden beams called vigas.

In June, preservationists of the New Deal era brought together Lopez with descendants of Franklin D. Roosevelt and several Cabinet secretaries that had helped ramp up government employment and infrastructure projects in the midst of the Great Depression.

They met in downtown Santa Fe, blocks from frescos in the New Mexico Museum of Art and canvas federal courthouse murals commissioned by the Public Works of Art Project, another New Deal institution.

While exchanging gifts is common among people in the country especially during big events such as Lebaran or Christmas, in Indonesia where corruption is still rampant it could be used as a pretext to bribe.

In view of that Indonesian minister of administrative reform Yuddy Chrisnandi has issued a warning that civil servants are not allowed to receive gifts connected with their positions. He said it was okay to exchange gifts so long as the gifts are still normal or worth no more than one million rupiahs although they would still be unethical if they are given because of the positions of the recipients.

The minister said he had made the call for the purpose of safeguarding the integrity of the countrys civil servants. He also considered that the welfare of the civil servants have now been better.

He said civil servants would get Lebaran allowance known locally as THR in the form of the 14th salary which will be paid seven days before the fall of Lebaran which is on July 6 at the latest. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has also made the same call.

According to the explanation of Article 12B of Law Number 20 of 2001 on corruption grafts include gifts given to state officials and civil servants in the form of money, goods, price discounts, commissions, loans without interests, travel tickets, accommodation facility, tour service, free medical service and others.

State employees and officials include civil servants, military/police officers, stateowned, regional government-owned company employees and state institution officials.

Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi has also prohibited civil servants to use official cars for the purpose of traveling home or “mudik” in local term to celebrate Lebaran.

“Before we still tolerated and only gave a reprimand to those using officials cars for mudik but now if they do they will be demoted or have their positions relinquished,” the minister said in Banyuwangi recently.

The district head of Banyuwangi in East Java, Abdullah Azwar Anas, has said he will abide by the ministers call adding that he has already prohibited the use of official cars for Lebaran for the past two years.

He said he has ordered all official cars to be parked at the districts administration compound during the holiday.

“We have implemented it long. All official cars are not allowed to be used for Lebaran except those used for specific purposes such as by transportation, tourism or sanitary services,” he said. The provincial government of West Nusa Tenggara Barat has also prohibited civil servants in the province to use official cars for Lebaran.

“Official cars may not be used for private interests in line with the directives of the governor including for Lebaran,” the head of employee, training and education affairs of the province, Abdul Hakim, said.

West Java governor Ahmad Heryawan also agreed with the instruction of minister

Yuddy Chrisnandi on official cars. “I agree with the minister and since I assumed the post I have prohibited the use of official cars for mudik,” he said. He said the prohibition has been effective for the past eight years in the province.

“The ministers instruction matches with the decision of the West Java administration,” he said adding that “official cars are for official purposes and so when they are not used so they are no longer official ones.”

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has also appealed to all state officials to not use official cars for private interests including Lebaran. “We appeal to all government agencies to prohibit official cars for use outside the official purposes,” KPKs director of gratification, Giri Suprapdiono, has said. “Community members who see officials using official cars may report it to us,” he said.

Erstanto Windiolelono, head of the district court of Tembilahan, Riau Province, has been relegated to the post of non-court judge at the

high court of Ambon, Maluku, over Lebaran allowance (THR) case.

“The decision was made yesterday (June 28) to impose a heavy punishment on him,” Supreme Court spokesman Suhadi revealed here on Wednesday.

It happened following the distribution of an official letter requesting companies to give THR to his office. Suhadi pointed out that Erstantos action went against the order of the government and the Supreme Court in 2013 that court officials are not allowed to receive gratuities, including Lebaran gifts.

“He has not received but has even asked for one, and so, he has clearly violated disciplinary rules and the code of ethics,” he stated. In view of this, the Supreme Court has decided to relieve Erstanto of his position as head of Tembilahan District Court and to impose stringent punishment by demoting him to the post of non-court judge in the High Court of Ambon, Maluku, and he will not receive judge allowance during suspension.(ant)

LONDON - Justice Secretary Michael Gove, one of the main campaigners to take Britain out of the EU, said on Thursday he would run to become prime minister, shaking up the contest and hurting the chances of his Brexit ally, ex-London mayor Boris Johnson.

Since the start of the Zika outbreak, which wreaked havoc across Brazil’s northeast earlier this year, many physicians and would-be visitors have worried the Games could be a catalyst to spread the virus internationally.

Some athletes, including the world’s top-ranked golfer, have said they will stay home to avoid infection because of concerns over health complications caused by Zika, notably microcephaly, a birth defect among babies of pregnant mothers infected by the virus.

Recently, however, cooler-than-normal temperatures during the southern hemisphere winter, coupled with efforts to eliminate breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that spread Zika, have cut infections by about 90 percent from a February peak, when more than 16,000 cases were reported in one week.

In Rio, an ebbing of Zika fears is reassuring authorities just over a month before the Olympics start on Aug. 5.

“Rio is not the Zika nightmare that people worried about,” says Pedro Vansconelos, director of the Evandro Chagas Institute, a Brazilian research facility, and a member of the World Health Organization’s emergency committee for Zika.

Hot, humid weather, which fosters mosquito reproduction, helped Zika spread rapidly from Brazil to more than 60 countries and territories.

A hot summer in Rio at the start of the year led to a spike in other mosquito-borne illnesses, such as dengue and Chikungunya. But the local outbreak of Zika was not as severe or as widespread as in the northeast, confounding scientists.

Now, with seasonal temperatures in Rio falling as low as 8 Celsius (46 Fahrenheit), infection rates for Zika, dengue and Chikungunya are waning.

According to the state government, Zika infections in Rio fell from more than 3,500 per week in February to less than 200 recently. Cases of dengue fell from 4,500 per week to under 500, while Chikungunya dropped from nearly 700 to under 50. (rtr)

They’re arguably the form teams at this European Championship. They’re the two countries that almost always rise to the occasion in major tournaments. Germany vs. Italy: It’s a game fit for a final. Except one of them won’t even get past the quarterfinal stage at Euro 2016.

The continental heavyweights — owners of eight World Cups and four European Championships between them — collide in Bordeaux on Saturday in a match that stands out for many reasons.

Firstly, there’s the skewed history of their meetings in major tournaments. Germany and Italy have played each other eight times at the highest level and, bizarrely, the Germans haven’t recorded a single victory.

“We still have a score to settle with the Italians,” Germany goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke said.

Then there’s the nations’ current standing in soccer. Germany came into Euro 2016 as the world champion and, to many people, the tournament favorite. Italy arrived with what many back home were saying was the worst team in years. The Germans have largely lived up to their billing, conceding no goals in four matches and hitting their stride with a 3-0 win over Slovakia in the round of 16. Already without Claudio Marchisio, Marco Verratti and Riccardo Montolivo because of pre-tournament injuries, Italy coach Antonio Conte is without the suspended Thiago Motta and Antonio Candreva (groin), while Daniele De Rossi (thigh) is a doubt.

As for Germany, left back Jonas Hector has had a cold this week but is expected to be OK for Saturday.

Since the start of the Zika outbreak, which wreaked havoc across Brazil’s northeast earlier this year, many physicians and would-be visitors have worried the Games could be a catalyst to spread the virus internationally.

Some athletes, including the world’s top-ranked golfer, have said they will stay home to avoid infection because of concerns over health complications caused by Zika, notably microcephaly, a birth defect among babies of pregnant mothers infected by the virus.

Recently, however, cooler-than-normal temperatures during the southern hemisphere winter, coupled with efforts to eliminate breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that spread Zika, have cut infections by about 90 percent from a February peak, when more than 16,000 cases were reported in one week.

In Rio, an ebbing of Zika fears is reassuring authorities just over a month before the Olympics start on Aug. 5.

“Rio is not the Zika nightmare that people worried about,” says Pedro Vansconelos, director of the Evandro Chagas Institute, a Brazilian research facility, and a member of the World Health Organization’s emergency committee for Zika.

Hot, humid weather, which fosters mosquito reproduction, helped Zika spread rapidly from Brazil to more than 60 countries and territories.

A hot summer in Rio at the start of the year led to a spike in other mosquito-borne illnesses, such as dengue and Chikungunya. But the local outbreak of Zika was not as severe or as widespread as in the northeast, confounding scientists.

Now, with seasonal temperatures in Rio falling as low as 8 Celsius (46 Fahrenheit), infection rates for Zika, dengue and Chikungunya are waning.

According to the state government, Zika infections in Rio fell from more than 3,500 per week in February to less than 200 recently. Cases of dengue fell from 4,500 per week to under 500, while Chikungunya dropped from nearly 700 to under 50. (rtr)

LONDON - Novak Djokovic made tennis history at Wimbledon on Wednesday when he notched up the most consecutive grand slam match victories in the Open Era, and said he aimed to continue his assault on the record books.

The defending champion brushed past France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-4 6-3 7-6(5) to book his place in the third round. It was his 30th consecutive grand slam match win, beating Rod Laver’s record of 29 set in 1969-70.

“I have to be very grateful to have the opportunity to make the history of the sport,” the world number one told reporters. “Knowing that I won 30 in a row, it’s very pleasing. I want to keep on going. Let’s see where it takes me.

“Every single record that I managed to achieve in the last couple of years is important,” he added. “Every next one

that I have a possibility to achieve is more motivation.”

Britain’s Gove to run for PM, shakes Conservative leadership race

LONDON - Justice Secretary Michael Gove, one of the main campaigners to take Britain out of the EU, said on Thursday he would run to become prime minister, shaking up the contest and hurting the chances of his Brexit ally, ex-London mayor Boris Johnson.

Last week’s EU referendum vote, when 52 percent of Britons voted to leave the bloc, triggered a political crisis in Britain with Prime Minister David Cameron stepping down. His replacement will face tough talks with Europe to mend a broken relationship.

On Thursday, Theresa May, the interior minister who campaigned to remain in the EU, also announced her candidacy to lead the party. But

it was the surprise announcement

by Gove that rocked the contest, by putting a second high-profile Leave candidate in the race against Johnson.

Gove, a close friend of Cameron’s, had previously said he would back Johnson, but in a commentary in the Spectator magazine he said he had come “reluctantly, to the conclusion that Boris cannot provide the leadership or build the

team for the task ahead”.

His U-turn will hurt the chances of Johnson, who succeeded in widening his popularity among Conservative members and beyond as London mayor, but is viewed warily by many other lawmakers in the ruling party.

“If we are to make the most of the opportunities ahead we need a bold break with the past,” Gove wrote.

archive called The Living New Deal is bringing the national scope of Roosevelt-era public works sites into sharper focus. More than 10,000 site locations are tagged to a Google map for browsing.

The crowdsourced archive started as a student project and is hosted by the Department of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley.

Susan Ives, who works for the project from Mill Valley, California, said amateur contributors have helped identify public works buildings where plaques and labels went missing through neglect and as Roosevelt’s progressive political ideals fell out of favor during the Cold War years.

“They were taken down when

the pendulum swung to the right,” she said. When it comes to national parks and monuments, meanwhile, many devotees of New Deal history want that era’s artifacts to be given a larger stage of their own, after serving for some 80 years as the backdrop to other wonders of nature and human history.

The National Park Service already juggles those competing missions at Bandelier National Monument, 18 miles from Santa Fe, where the main attraction is ancestral Native American cliff dwellings carved into soft rock.

The monument also is home to a cluster of 31 support buildings created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s that mimics a small New Mexican village, and is

No gifts, no official cars for Lebaran

The 100-year anniversary of the National Park Service is igniting new interest in the majestic Spanish-pueblo themed building that Lopez and other “CCC boys” built, along with other remote cabins, furniture and artwork of the 1930s that transformed and popularized national and state parks while putting millions of impoverished Americans back to work.

The Old Santa Fe Trail Building, nicknamed after its address alongside the former frontier migration and supply route, was stocked with hand-carved furniture and Native American pottery and paintings commissioned under the Work Projects Administration from local artists.

It is now celebrated as a graceful landmark that blends with the surrounding high-desert landscape — while serving as a testament to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal public works projects.

That legacy is slipping from living memory. Lopez, who turned 100 in January, is the only known surviving member of the work crew that laid the foundation and hoisted hand-carved wooden beams called vigas.

In June, preservationists of the New Deal era brought together Lopez with descendants of Franklin D. Roosevelt and several Cabinet secretaries that had helped ramp up government employment and infrastructure projects in the midst of the Great Depression.

They met in downtown Santa Fe, blocks from frescos in the New Mexico Museum of Art and canvas federal courthouse murals commissioned by the Public Works of Art Project, another New Deal institution.

Jerry Rogers of Santa Fe, a retired cultural preservation official at the National Park Service, thinks it is time for a special Park Service unit devoted solely to New Deal preservation. The Old Santa Fe Trail Building could be exhibit No. 1, he said, emphasizing the human drama behind the structure where inside-and-out renovations are planned during 2017.

That is what might be the reason behind calls on civil servants to not accept gifts of any kind on the occasion of “Lebaran” or Eid al-Fitr.

While exchanging gifts is common among people in the country especially during big events such as Lebaran or Christmas, in Indonesia where corruption is still rampant it could be used as a pretext to bribe.

In view of that Indonesian minister of administrative reform Yuddy Chrisnandi has issued a warning that civil servants are not allowed to receive gifts connected with their positions. He said it was okay to exchange gifts so long as the gifts are still normal or worth no more than one million rupiahs although they would still be unethical if they are given because of the positions of the recipients.

The minister said he had made the call for the purpose of safeguarding the integrity of the countrys civil servants. He also considered that the welfare of the civil servants have now been better.

He said civil servants would get Lebaran allowance known locally as THR in the form of the 14th salary which will be paid seven days before the fall of Lebaran which is on July 6 at the latest. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has also made the same call.

According to the explanation of Article 12B of Law Number 20 of 2001 on corruption grafts include gifts given to state officials and civil servants in the form of money, goods, price discounts, commissions, loans without interests, travel tickets, accommodation facility, tour service, free medical service and others.

State employees and officials include civil servants, military/police officers, stateowned, regional government-owned company employees and state institution officials.

Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi has also prohibited civil servants to use official cars for the purpose of traveling home or “mudik” in local term to celebrate Lebaran.

“Before we still tolerated and only gave a reprimand to those using officials cars for mudik but now if they do they will be demoted or have their positions relinquished,” the minister said in Banyuwangi recently.

The district head of Banyuwangi in East Java, Abdullah Azwar Anas, has said he will abide by the ministers call adding that he has already prohibited the use of official cars for Lebaran for the past two years.

He said he has ordered all official cars to be parked at the districts administration compound during the holiday.

“We have implemented it long. All official cars are not allowed to be used for Lebaran except those used for specific purposes such as by transportation, tourism or sanitary services,” he said. The provincial government of West Nusa Tenggara Barat has also prohibited civil servants in the province to use official cars for Lebaran.

“Official cars may not be used for private interests in line with the directives of the governor including for Lebaran,” the head of employee, training and education affairs of the province, Abdul Hakim, said.

Yuddy Chrisnandi on official cars. “I agree with the minister and since I assumed the post I have prohibited the use of official cars for mudik,” he said. He said the prohibition has been effective for the past eight years in the province.

“The ministers instruction matches with the decision of the West Java administration,” he said adding that “official cars are for official purposes and so when they are not used so they are no longer official ones.”

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has also appealed to all state officials to not use official cars for private interests including Lebaran. “We appeal to all government agencies to prohibit official cars for use outside the official purposes,” KPKs director of gratification, Giri Suprapdiono, has said. “Community members who see officials using official cars may report it to us,” he said.

Erstanto Windiolelono, head of the district court of Tembilahan, Riau Province, has been relegated to the post of non-court judge at the

high court of Ambon, Maluku, over Lebaran allowance (THR) case.

“The decision was made yesterday (June 28) to impose a heavy punishment on him,” Supreme Court spokesman Suhadi revealed here on Wednesday.

It happened following the distribution of an official letter requesting companies to give THR to his office. Suhadi pointed out that Erstantos action went against the order of the government and the Supreme Court in 2013 that court officials are not allowed to receive gratuities, including Lebaran gifts.

“He has not received but has even asked for one, and so, he has clearly violated disciplinary rules and the code of ethics,” he stated. In view of this, the Supreme Court has decided to relieve Erstanto of his position as head of Tembilahan District Court and to impose stringent punishment by demoting him to the post of non-court judge in the High Court of Ambon, Maluku, and he will not receive judge allowance during suspension.(ant)

Exporters disrupted by hackers, Losses reach thousands of US dollars GIANYAR - Behind the challenges of global economic slowdown, Gianyar exporters are now faced with hackers’ disruption.

Due to this disruption, the buyers originally wishing to buy local products of Gianyar even suffered losses of up to tens of thousands of US dollars. This condition is also considered to have tarnished the image of Indonesian exporters, especially Gianyar.

Chairman of the Gianyar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), I Wayan Gede Arsania, who met on Wednesday (Jun. 29) said that the hacker disruption has occurred since long time ago. For instance, they disrupted the communications via email, between the Bali exporters and overseas buyers.

“When we have dealt with one buyer overseas and would like to make transaction, the hackers take action by changing our email address,” he said.

Last disruption he experienced was on Kuningan Day in February 2016. At that time, one of the buyers wanted to buy local handicraft of Gianyar. Due to hacker disruption, the exporter should experience loss in fantastic amount. “The last, one of our buyers suffered a loss as much as USD 32,000 or nearly IDR 350 million because his email was hacked so that the money was

transferred wrongly,” he said.

Gede Arsania continued that after that a similar incident happened again, but it was more quickly realized, so that the buyer has not had time to make transaction. “My email was hacked up to four times. Thankfully, our buyer quickly realized so that it could be communicated,” he said.

This condition was then shared with the members of exporter community. In fact, a number of other exporters in Bali also experienced similar incident with varied amount of losses. “We had questioned about this matter to bank authority, but it could not provide a solution. Similarly, we already reported this case to police department, but until now there has been no progress,” he said.

Gede Arsania asserted that other than causing losses up to fantastic amount, the presence of hackers have already affected the image of the export market of Indonesia, especially Bali. From this condition, he considered it important to establish a special agency that can provide protection and guarantees for exporters.

“Definitely it affected the image of the Indonesian market because many overseas buyers become restless when purchasing our products. On that account, it is required to set a special agency that can provide protection,” he said. (kmb35)

Lifeguard post at Labuan Sait damaged due to age

MANGUPURA - Condition of lifeguard post building on Labuan Sait Beach, Pecatu village, South Kuta, is quite alarming. The post where lifeguard oversees the activities of visitors on the beach looks to have rotted due to the age and tidal waves.

Damages to one of the supporting tourism facilities in Badung district can be seen in the warehouse used to store goods. The building without being equipped with door is now in very fragile condition.

Supervisor of Lifeguard for Uluwatu Sector, Wayan Somer, said on Wednesday (Jun. 29) the damage to the lifeguard post has been seen since three years ago. Until now, the condition gradually begins porous.

“Its condition is getting worse when the phenomenon of high waves occurred recently. Pounding of the waves occurred during three days even reached the second floor of the building,” he said.

Wayan Somer admitted to be worried when doing activities in the building. Moreover, his fellow decided to do surveillance in the beach area. “We are worried and all the officers prefer to do activities outside the post,” he said.

The lifeguard team on duty, said Wayan Somer, does not place items or equipment in the building due to the increasingly porous condition. “We do not dare to put anything in the post. So, the goods like the rubber boat and so forth are temporarily dropped off on Muaya Beach,” he said.

The United States, which is a close ally of the Philippines and is concerned about China’s expansive South China Sea claims, reiterated its backing for The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration and urged a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

Manila is contesting China’s historical claim to about 90 percent of the South China Sea, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Several Southeast Asian states have overlapping claims in the sea and the dispute has sparked concerns of a military confrontation that could disrupt global trade. In a lengthy statement, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Manila’s unilateral approach flouted international law.

“I again stress that the arbitration court has no jurisdiction in the case and on the relevant matter, and should not hold hearings or make a ruling,” he said.

He said: “On the issue of territory and disputes over maritime delineation, China does not accept any dispute resolution from a third party and does not accept any dispute resolution forced on China.”

In Manila, the foreign ministry said the Philippines would “fully respect” the tribunal’s ruling and hoped members of the international community would do the same.

U.S. state department spokeswoman Anna Richey-Allen reiterated U.S. backing for the court. “We support the peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea, including the use of international legal mechanisms such as arbitration.”

But China’s official Xinhua news agency said the court was a “law-abusing tribunal” that would only worsen the dispute.

“Manila fails to see that such an arbitration will only stir up more trouble in the South China Sea, which doesn’t serve the interests of the concerned parties in the least,” it said. (rtr)

MANILA - Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the Philippines’ 16th president on Thursday, capping the unlikely journey of a provincial city mayor whose brash man-of-the-people style and pledges to crush crime swamped establishment rivals in last month’s election.

After making his pledge at the presidential palace in Manila, with one hand on the Bible, Duterte delivered a speech in which he promised a “relentless” and “sustained” fight against corruption, criminality and illegal drugs.

However, he said these ills were only symptoms of a disease cutting into the moral fibre of society.

“I see the erosion of the people’s trust in our country’s leaders, the erosion of faith in our judicial system, the erosion of confidence in the capacity of our public servants to make the people’s lives better, safer and healthier,” he said.

Duterte tapped into voters’ disgust with the Philippines’ political elite and the failure of successive governments to tackle poverty and inequality, drawing comparisons with Donald Trump and the rise of assertive populists across the globe.

But his defiance of convention has raised concern that economic growth in the Philippines, the fastest

of Southeast Asia’s five main economies under his predecessor, could be at risk on his watch.

The political shake-up also adds to uncertainty about Manila’s position in a sometimes-bitter dispute with China over sovereignty in the South China Sea, a key global trade route.

China’s official Xinhua news agency said President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Duterte, saying he was “willing to work with Duterte to push for improvement of relations between the two countries”.

Duterte’s new defence minister told Reuters this week that crushing Islamist militants in the south of the country would take precedence over South China Sea disputes.

Duterte’s election campaign focused almost entirely on the scourges of crime, drug abuse and corruption, and voters were not deterred by repeated warnings from “the Punisher”, in profanity-peppered speeches, to have offenders killed.

Last three years, Bali’s export increases

DENPASAR - Over the past three years, the exports of Bali slightly increased with the products including accessories, garments, coffee, processed fish and processed wood. Putu Sudiartana threatened to be sacked from the House

Tutik and Supadma have chance to replace DENPASAR - Sting operations by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) dragged the name of the member of Commission III of the central House of Representatives, I Putu Sudiartana.

This Democrat of Bali constituent is touted to be caught in a series of sting operations (OTT), Tuesday (Jun. 28). Sudiartana or Putu Leong is not the first cadre of Democrat from Bali entangled in corruption cases. Previously, Jero Wacik was canceled to be inaugurated into the member of the House of Representatives for being suspected of corruption.

“I have just received the information (yesterday—Ed). We were surprised and regretted it happened because the state official must actually become our expectation as a role model, an example for doing well,” said Chairman of the Democratic Party of Bali, I Made Mudarta, when confirmed on Wednesday (Jun. 29).

According to Mudarta, what experienced by Putu Leong is presumption of innocence. The KPK has not yet published any of faults committed by his cadre. However, he asserted that it is very personal or purely personal.

“A political party is just like a country, where the country has many subjects. If there are people committing crimes like stealing, robbing, trafficking drug and raping, the culprit is legally wrong, and not the country is wrong. It is similar with political parties, including the Democratic Party,” he explained.

Mudarta added that there is a mechanism in the party if Putu Leong has proved guilty and declared to be a suspect by the KPK. In this case, through the central executive board (DPP) through the Honorary

Board will sack the concerned party leadership’s structure. As is known, Putu Leong is currently the Deputy Treasurer of the central executive board of the Democratic Party.

“Likewise he is sacked in the House, and it is the integrity pact having been signed by all the cadres of the Democrats, while membership card of the party (KTA) is not.

It is inherent personally. It can be discarded any time and is not a problem as well,” he explained.

Mudarta emphasized that the mechanism of dismissal from the structure of party officials and members of parliament fully lies in the authority of central executive board. His counterpart in regional executive board (DPD) Bali will support anything decided by the central executive board. If he is sacked in the parliament, there are two cadres of the Democrat likely to replace Putu Leong.

“According to the law, the next candidates obtaining most votes are Tutik Kusumawardani and Putu Supadma Rudana. Which one can fill in the vacant position are Mrs. Tutik in the first list and the next is Putu Supadma Rudana,” he said.

Mudarta did not dismiss when Tutik Kusumawardani was previously predicted to replace the position of Jero Wacik. However, until now Tutik is never sworn while waiting for the permanent legal status of Jero Wacik.

In the meantime, the former Democratic cadre, Gede Pasek Suardika, admitted to be apprehensive because he is familiar with the figure Putu Leong. Due to this case, Bali is politically slapped at the national level. Of the nine seats allotted in the parliament, there are remaining seven effective seats.

Two others are ineffective due to corruption cases, and both of the

Democrats.

“It makes me sad because the struggle of our colleagues in the region is trying to maintain the dignity of the Democrats but has not been followed up by them in the center. Surely this condition disrupts Bali because it reduces political access, and two chairs have great political value,” he said.

Logically, said Pasek, Chairman of the central executive board of the Democratic Party should be responsible for allowing this condition. According to him, similar thing happened again and it is inseparable from the failure of leadership. Not to mention, the substitute to Jero Wacik (entangled in earlier corruption case) has not been sworn in until now.

“It is the task of the central executive board to approach Mr. Jero to make a letter of resignation, or the like, it could be so. The mechanism is not necessary to wait for the permanent legal status. No other parties apply such a mechanism, but it can. It happens because the central executive board does not work,” he criticized.

Now, when Putu Leong is also detained, said Pasek, it means there are no more people’s representatives of the Democratic Party whereas it has a large number of votes. Therefore, it would be wise to inaugurate two substitutes at once for the sake of Bali.

“In the history, there has never been one faction with two chairs originating in the same electoral district, both replaced due to corruption cases. Apparently it has never occurred. It is difficult to say what it is called, I do not understand. What kind of phenomenon it is, so that I am confused. It makes me stunned,” he added.

Pasek added that the Democratic

Party, especially in Bali, will face tough challenges because of this matter. Democracy as the spirit of the Democratic Party must be restored again. According to him, the spirit has now disappeared and become an aristocracy, even cartelization. Participation at the lower level reduces because everything involves intervention.

NEW YORK - Madame Tussauds is celebrating the release of the new “Ghostbusters” film next month with a hyper-reality experience that lets guests to the wax museum fight paranormal crime themselves.

It includes wax figures of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wigg, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones’ characters in the supernatural comedy and combines virtual reality, interactive effects and a physical set so fans feel like they are in the movie.

“Hyper-reality is blending the virtual world and the physical world

together. So imagine a physical set that’s built and you’ve got all of your VR gear on, you’ve got a proton pack, you’re carrying a proton gun,” explained Eric Fluet, head of marketing and sales of Madame Tussauds, New York.

“But all you’re seeing is the virtual world, but if you see a chair

you can touch it and there is actually a chair there.”

Sony Pictures and The Void, an immersive entertainment company, teamed up with Madame Tussauds to create the experience.

The original 1984 film became a cult movie classic and spawned a 1989 sequel.

Ghostbusters: Dimension, the hyper-reality portion of the experience, will open on July 1. The new “Ghostbusters” film will hit theaters on July 14. (rtr)

The day opened with police conducting raids on 16 locations in Istanbul, rounding up 13 people suspected of having links to the Islamic State group, the most likely perpetrator of the attack at one of the world’s busiest airports.
