Oliver Stone to get top award at Nantucket Film Festival

NANTUCKET — Three-time Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter and producer Oliver Stone, whose movies on often controversial historical topics have had widespread cultural impact, has been named recipient of the top award at this year’s Nantucket Film Festival.

Stone is scheduled to receive the Screenwriters Tribute Award at this year’s festival scheduled for June 22-27. He won a best writing Oscar in 1979 for “Midnight Express,” and best director Oscars in 1987 for “Platoon” and in 1990 for “Born on the Fourth of July.”

His current project is “Snowden,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, the man who leaked classified NSA documents.

Stone served in the Army in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star.

Comedian and talk show host Seth Meyers is scheduled to host the awards ceremony.(ap)

NEW YORK — Busy entertainment mogul Tyler Perry is producing a drama about a woman involved in a political sex scandal, the first scripted series that will air on the TLC network. TLC said Wednesday that the eight-episode series, tentatively titled “Too Close to Home,” will air this summer. The lead character is a successful woman from Washington

KOLKATA - At least 14 people have been killed and 150 are feared trapped after a partially built flyover collapsed in the Indian city of Kolkata, according to police. Witnesses say rescuers are using their bare hands to try to save those caught under the rubble.

NEW YORK — Michelle Fiala says her 14-year-old daughter, Laura, is fine watching humans run for their lives from snarling, flesh-eating zombies on AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” but if one of the characters vomits, the teen has to look away.

“My youngest has a real thing about seeing people vomit,” the St. Louis mom said in a recent interview. “She’s got a real phobia about that. She’s totally fine when they’re stabbing zombies in the head or there’s fake blood flying or the zombies are eating people, but when (a character) Denise leaned over and threw up ... she had to turn away. She couldn’t handle that.”

Fiala’s 16-year-old daughter, Emma, also watches after the three discovered the hit series on Netflix about a month ago.

Humans battling a zombie apocalypse may not feel like family fare in the grand tradition of “The Ed Sullivan Show,” ‘’The Carol Burnett Show” or “American Idol,” but

the family has plenty of company.

Ericka Calcagno of Farmington Hills, Michigan, looks forward to watching the show with her 12year-old daughter, Gina, and son Jean-Luc, who is 9. She said her husband first introduced her to the series, and her kids were intrigued by their conversations about it.

“I was a little skeptical at first if it was too much but we watched the first season during the day. Since then we always watch together and discuss it constantly.”

They’re spirited in their devotion and have even mastered makeup tricks to look like zombies (or “walkers” as they’re called on the show).

Fiala and her kids are caught up to real time so they can enjoy the

season six finale Sunday.

“It’s so outside of what would be my usual genre for television,” said Fiala. “I came home from work one day and my kids were sitting on the couch watching like, ‘You have to come watch this!” I was sucked in pretty immediately. You get sucked in by the characters. We have our favorites. It surprises me still that I’m that into it.” “’The Walking Dead’ is like the new ‘Family Ties,’ OK? It’s tying families together,” said actress and playwright Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne on the show. “The thing that’s touched me the most is when I’ve met mothers of adolescent sons who say, ‘This is how me and my son bond. It’s because we both watch the show.’And you know those adolescent years are tricky years for parents and I was just so touched by that. I thought it was so beautiful that this show is functioning in that way.”(ap)

D E N PASAR - Oversupply of hotel rooms in Bali, especially in South Bali, should be addressed immediately. In addition to resulting in a tariff war, the excessive hotel rooms also shift the image of Bali

tourism into mass tourism. Actually, the Island of the Gods should lead to quality tourism that can be sustainable.

“To make it sustainable, a few things must be considered. First of all, the culture must remain sustainable and never be degraded

and so must the environment.

Excessive tourist accommodation certainly causes many problems.

As mentioned above, the tariff war will generate lower taxes obtained by the government,” said Chairman of the Bali Tourism Community Alliance (AMPB), Gusti Kade

Sutawa, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Sep. 30).

Other than tax issues, added Sutawa, employee’s income is also getting lower. Proliferation of hotels is no longer comparable to the number of incoming guests.

This will affect the welfare of com-

munity. On that account, it is important for Bali to gradually return to quality tourism by attempting to draw travelers with high purchasing power to come to Bali.

Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) of the ASEAN Economic Community.

The government has set tourism as the leading sector for these service industries, in order to generate foreign exchange and create many large job opportunities. This year, tourism is targeted to deliver 12 million foreign visors and 260 million domestic tourist and is estimated to generate income worth IDR 172.8 trillion and absorbs 11.7 million workers.

The national coordination meeting of Tourism Vocational Schools was attended by 400 participants from all over Indonesia and representatives of ministries and institutions related to tourism human resource development through certification in accordance with the standard of the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement. JAKARTA— The Ministry of Tourism is committed to improving the quality and competitiveness of the human resources of the tourism sector and this year they are showing their dedication through by facilitating the certification for the 35,000 tourism workers. “We consider that the human resources of the tourism sector are the most ready to face the competition of the ASEAN Economic Community” said Deputy Head of Tourism Institutional Development (BPKK) of the Ministry of Tourism, Ahman Sya, in a press release received by Bali Post, Jakarta on Wednesday (Mar. 30).

In his speech for the opening the national coordination meeting for Tourism Vocational Schools (SMK) across Indonesia that took place in Batam, Riau Islands, Ahman Sya said that the number of certified tourism workers has shown a 100 percent increase over last year’s target of 17,500 issued certificates. In addition, he said, the Ministry of Tourism has also implemented a program to facilitate the establishment of tourism

FDA grants use of experimental blood test for Zika screening

WASHINGTON — Federal health officials are granting use of an experimental test to screen blood donations for Zika virus, an emergency step designed to protect local blood supplies from the mosquito-borne virus.

The action means U.S. territories with active Zika infections, primarily Puerto Rico, will be able to resume collecting and screening their own blood. Earlier this month, the island of 3.5 million barred local donations and began importing blood from the U.S., following recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA said Wednesday that use of the test could be expanded if the virus spreads to other areas of the U.S. Currently no states have reported local, mosquito-transmitted Zika cases. However, some experts say some of the problems facing Puerto Rico now may be repeated later this year in Florida, Texas and other Southern states where officials think mosquito-borne outbreaks of Zika may occur.

“In the future, should Zika virus transmission occur in other areas, blood collection establishments will be able to continue to collect blood and use the investigational screening test, minimizing disruption to the blood supply,” said Dr. Peter Marks, director of FDA’s center for biologics.

Last month the FDA advised U.S. blood banks to refuse donations from people who have travelled to Zika-affected regions

in the previous four weeks. Those guidelines remain in effect.

The test authorized by the FDA is made by Roche Molecular Systems, a division of the Swiss health care conglomerate.

Zika is spreading rapidly through Latin America. While most people experience either mild or no symptoms, Zika is suspected of causing a devastating birth defect — babies born with abnormally small heads — and pregnant Americans are urged to avoid travel to affected areas.

Puerto Rico has 350 confirmed cases of the virus, including 40 pregnant women. Two of those women have given birth to healthy babies. Health authorities have said they are not tracking suspected cases.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said tens of thousands of IUDs and other forms of birth control are badly needed in Puerto Rico to help prevent unintended pregnancies during an outbreak of Zika there.

Earlier this month, the CDC and the FDA authorized emergency use of a separate laboratory test to diagnose Zika infection in patients.

The test was distributed to a limited number of U.S. and international laboratories.(ap)

High-intensity workout injuries spawn cottage industry

MIAMI — After a few weeks of working out at CrossFit, Charles Banfield says his back hurt constantly and his joints felt terrible.

The 47-year-old’s aches and pains were so bad, he initially blamed his bed and purchased a new mattress.

After feeling a searing pain during a particularly grueling exercise, the Los Angeles-based CEO of an event planning company learned he’d torn his Achilles tendon. “You miss one step and you could really hurt yourself,” Banfield said.

Though there have not yet been in-depth studies, some chiropractors, doctors and trainers say stories like Banfield’s have become more frequent with the increasing popularity of high-intensity interval training espoused by CrossFit and other similar hybrid workout gyms.

Such workouts include highimpact moves like jumping onto platforms and are performed during a shorter period of time, often without a break to maximize benefits, but some experts say they strain

participants’ bodies beyond what they’re meant to endure as they sling sledgehammers over their shoulders and perfect headstand pushups.

The notion that people are overdoing it has spawned an offshoot industry aimed at delivering lowerimpact exercise or to help those recovering from injuries to continue breaking a sweat but without exacerbating their problems.

Many people who do the highintensity workouts aren’t adequately conditioned for such rigorous workouts, or have back and spine conditions that could worsen, said Marc Umlas, chief of orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, who said his office has seen an increase in injuries from workouts at CrossFit and similar programs.

“They plunge headfirst into a high intensity workout and they get injured,” Umlas said. Torn tendons and ligaments are a common result, he added. (ap)

BANGLI— Tourists have been complaining to tour guides in Kintamani about the chaotic arrangement of tourist attractions as well as the issue of levees being collected several times for a single location.

Chief of the Abang Erawang tourist attraction, Nengah Suratnata, said on Wednesday (Mar. 30) that part from general chaos, the the the most common complaint from

tourists is being charged more than once in Kintamani as well as the general chaos.

Suratnata explained that visitors entering the area of Kintamani are

made to pay admission at several government posts - like at Sekardadi. Tourists visiting Kintamani are also subjected to other levies when entering some specific locations like the lake, mountain or Batur Temple even though these attractions are Kintamani run attractions. Suratnata said that visitors do not so much complain about the

cost of the admission tickets but the fact that they are charged so many times. “They are confused about why they have to pay for admission to the area in general and also for specific locations” he said.

He added that many travelers also complain about the increase in the price levies that was imposed by the government at the beginning of

2015. Most travelers consider the 200-percent increase in the price of levies is not justified by facilities that are provided. “Necessarily, an increase int eh price of admission should be coupled with improvements to facilities. But, the reality is not so. This is frequently complained about by travelers” said Suratnata. (kmb40)

Land conversion threatens food security

BANGLI— So far, the district of Bangli remains safe in terms of the availability of local food.

Nevertheless, the Food Security Council (DKP) is anticipating potential problems in the face of the rampant conversion of agricultural lands into buildings that necessarily translates into less locally grown food -especially rice.

Chief of the Bangli Food Security Office, Wayan Sarma, when met on Tuesday (Mar 30), explained that last year (2015), Bangli produced 27,604 tons of food through strategic food production: 16,568 tons of rice; 1,731 tons of corn; 2,441 tons of cassava, and 4,612 tons of sweet potatoes. 8,85 tons of noncarbohydrates were also produced or 31.82 percent of the total about of food produced.

According to Sarma, this amount of food makes Bangli “food-safe”,

and added that there was even a surplus of some 2,228 tons. The surplus occurred because Bangli’s total population of 222,600 people requires 25,376 tons of food. Although the Food Security Office recognizes that there is presently enough food being produced, they are remaining alert to the threat of land conversions. It is well know that lots of land in Bali is being converted from agricultural into buildings, and this is feared to have an impact on food availability.

Given this potential threat, people are being encouraged to reduce the amount of rice that they consume and to instead replace it with other locally grown carbohydrates.

“Local food processing technology also needs to be developed so as to extend the amount of time that food can be stored” added Sarma. (kmb40)

DENPASAR - Since the issuance of Law No. 6/2014 on ‘the village fund’, a relatively large amount of the federal budget is being disbursed to villages across Indonesia. However the funds for 2015 have not all been disbursed yet due to a number of new rules from the central government that had to be adjusted.

I.B. Bima, Headman of Kesimen, Kertalangu, Denpasar, who is also chief of the Headman Communication Forum of Denpasar, recently revealed that the use of the village funds that were disbursed in the City of Denpasar last year, were especially well managed.

As for the fiscal year 2016, so far there have been no disbursements made, although according to existing provisions ‘the village fund’ can be disbursed gradually.

Last year the funds were given out in three stages. “The fund has been disbursed yet this year, but we are still in March” explained Bima.

‘The village fund allocation” (ADD) that was disbursed through the government of Denpasar’ regional budget in 2015 was quite large amounting to IDR 69.7 billion in all but was given out in three phases, the first of which took place in July 2015 was disbursed to all the villages in this area, but it only amounted to 40 percent of the total budget.

Government (BPMD) of Denpasar, I Made Mertajaya, said that the ‘village fund’ disbursement process for 2015 has now been competed. “On average, each village received IDR 300 million” he said.

Mertajaya added that the disbursement of the village fund was done in stages according to the mandate of ‘the law on villages’.

Upadesha stated that all Customary Villages under the auspices of the MUDP Bali will be invited to the meeting - not just those who have expressed their opposition to the reclamation

of Benoa Bay. He added that he could not give any more detailed information about the planned meeting because he was still carrying out a ceremony at Besakih Temple. WASHINGTON — Working to display a united front, the United States and key Asian countries will seek Thursday to put more pressure on North Korea as world leaders open a nuclear security summit in Washington.

President Barack Obama, the summit’s host, will also seek to smooth over tensions with China over cybersecurity and maritime disputes as he and President Xi Jinping meet on the sidelines. The summit also offers Obama his last major chance to focus global attention on disparate nuclear security threats before his term ends early next year.

Though nuclear terrorism and the Islamic State group top this year’s agenda, concerns about North Korea’s nuclear weapons program are also commanding focus as the two-day summit gets under way.

Those long-simmering concerns have escalated of late following the North’s recent nuclear test and rocket launch.

Obama planned to have a joint meeting Thursday morning with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Park Geun-hye, two U.S. treaty al-

lies deeply concerned about North Korea. It’s a reprise of a similar meeting the three countries held in 2014 during the last nuclear security summit in The Hague.

China’s influence over the North will be front and center later in the day when Obama sits down with Xi. The White House said that meeting was also an opportunity for Obama to press U.S. concerns about human rights and China’s assertive territorial claims in waters far off its coast.

Though frictions with China remain high, the U.S. was encouraged

by China’s role in passing stringent new U.N. sanctions on North Korea, its traditional ally. Now the U.S. is pressing Beijing to implement those sanctions dutifully.

“The international community must remain united in the face of North Korea’s continued provocations, including its recent nuclear test and missile launches,” Obama

wrote in an op-ed appearing Thursday in The Washington Post. He added that the recent U.N. sanctions “show that violations have consequences.”

The U.S. and South Korea have been discussing whether to deploy a U.S. missile defense system called THAAD, or the Terminal HighAltitude Area Defense, in South Korea to counter the threat from the North. China has resisted that step out of concern it would also give the U.S. radar coverage over Chinese territory, and Russia opposes it as well.

Antony Blinken, the U.S. deputy secretary of state, said this week that China must engage with the U.S. directly on North Korea if it wants to avoid the U.S. and its partners taking steps “that it won’t like.”

In North Korea, meanwhile, the government has been churning out regular propaganda pieces condemning the U.S. and South Korea, while warning it could launch a pre-emptive strike against South Korea or even the U.S. mainland at any time.(ap)

PRISTINA — Kosovo’s outgoing president, Ahtifete Jahjaga, said Thursday international experts have concluded that a border demarcation deal with Montenegro is in line with international standards.

Three experts from the U.S., Britain and Germany considered as regular the process of establishing the border with neighboring Montenegro. That has been harshly opposed by the country’s political opposition, which claims Kosovo is losing thousands of hectares of land.

“From the legal and technical point of view the international experts have found no violation of the demarcation process between Kosovo and Montenegro,” Jahjaga said. She added, however, that the experts considered the process needed to be “more transparent.”

Jahjaga created the ad hoc commission as part of attempts to lay the basis of a political dialogue in the country, efforts that have always been turned down by the opposition.

Kosovo’s political life has been in turmoil since last September as the opposition has disrupted Parliament’s work and its supporters have clashed with police. They also oppose a deal with Serbia giving more powers to ethnic Serbs in Kosovo.

The opposition, which is now boycotting Parliament, on Thursday did not accept the experts’ conclusion and said it will continue the anti-government protests.

“The united opposition considers that the findings of this international team ... are an evaluation made for the President’s needs and as such cannot be reflected in the need of border correction with Montenegro,” a statement said.

Prime Minister Isa Mustafa’s government hailed the experts’ findings, saying they were in line with previous findings of the U.S. Department of State and should settle the issue.

The U.S. embassy in Pristina also welcomed the conclusion of the ad hoc commission and urged Kosovo and Montenegro “to take steps to improve border management and strengthen cooperation.”

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, an act that Serbia still rejects.(ap)

LONDON — In spite of a modest improvement in inflation that had its roots in the services sector, consumer prices across the 19-country eurozone fell in the year to March for the second month running, official figures showed Thursday.

In its estimate for the month, Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency, said the headline inflation rate was minus 0.1 percent against the previous month’s reading of minus 0.2 percent. The modest uptick was in line with market expectations following recent figures showing a solid pick-up in German inflation.

is likely to have had the biggest impact in nudging up the headline rate, while energy prices once again provided the biggest drag.

One development that may cheer policymakers at the European Central Bank was the news that the core rate, which strips out the volatile items of food, alcohol, energy and tobacco, rose to 1 percent from 0.8 percent. Still, both rates remain well below what the ECB wants — inflation at just below 2 percent.

The ECB has enacted a series of stimulus measures, such as cutting interest rates and buying government bonds in the markets, in order to get inflation back to target. Since

the last stimulus package was announced this month, few analysts think the central bank will do anything further soon. But in the longer-term, many economists think the ECB may have to do more.

The ECB is worried that low or negative inflation will prompt even more economic stagnation in the eurozone.

A consistent drop in prices, known as deflation, can choke the life out of an economy mainly by enticing consumers to delay big purchases beyond everyday needs such as food and energy in the knowledge that they will cost less down the line.(ap)

Prime Minister David Cameron held a crisis meeting at 10 Downing St., and said the government would do “everything it can” to keep steelmaking in Britain. But, he said, “this is a difficult situation. There’s no guarantee of success.”

“This industry is in difficulty right across the world,” Cameron said. “There’s been a collapse in prices, there’s massive overcapacity.”

The steel industry in Britain, like many developed economies, has been hit hard by cheap Chinese imports, which have depressed prices, and manufacturers have asked the government and European Union to impose anti-dumping duties.

Tata Steel, which operates the country’s biggest steel plant at Port Talbot in south Wales, is losing 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) a day in its U.K. operations.

This is not necessarily a sign of gender discrimination, but a general prohibition against blood on holy ground.

If you are invited to a ceremony in someone’s home, such as a wedding or baby ceremony, it is appropriate to bring a small, wrapped gift. A card is not necessary.

Like in many other parts of the world, the left hand is considered unclean, and to eat with it, point with it, shake hands with it or offer or receive something with it is perceived as extremely rude.

Shorts and sleeveless tops are fine for the beach and for shopping, but when visiting cultural sights or small villages they may be seen as offensive.

Feet are considered impure and the head is considered to be the most sacred part of the body. Don’t point with your feet or prop them up on tables, and don’t pat people, even small children, on the head. (kmb)

businesses. “The existence of MLM businesses in Indonesia must be addressed because they are contributing the bankrupting of the national economy” he told reporters.

Many people have joined in these businesses by spending tens of millions of rupiahs on them, but this money will surely get absorbed overseas. Whereas if this same money is deposited in local banks, saved or invested within the country it could serve to drive national economic growth, he explained.

India’s once-gleaming Golden Temple dulled by air pollution

AMRITSAR — The chronic air pollution blanketing much of northern India is now threatening the holiest shrine in the Sikh religion, making the once-gleaming walls of the Golden Temple dingy and dull.

There is little to be done short of replacing the 430-year-old temple’s gold-plated walls — an expensive project already undertaken more than a century ago and then again in 1999.

To cut down on pollution, environmentalists and religious leaders have launched a campaign that includes persuading farmers to stop burning spent crops to clear their fields, removing industry from the area and cutting back on traffic. A community kitchen called a “langar” that serves up to 100,000 people free meals every day at the temple is also switching from burning wood to cooking with gas.

But so far the campaign hasn’t had much impact, with change happening slowly and still no pollution monitoring equipment installed.

“As far as pollution goes, we are paying attention,” said Jaswant Singh, environmental engineer at the State Pollution Control Board, a government regulatory authority.

“We are in the process of procuring equipment so that we can check the pollution area, pollution from every source on a day-to-day basis.”

Officials have also banned burning trash or cooking with certain fuels in restaurants and communi-

ties nearby, but enforcement so far remains weak. The city also wants to build an electricity station to stop people from using diesel-fueled generators, but Singh could not say when that might happen.

“The pollution degrading the Golden Temple is growing,” said environmental activist Gunbir Singh, who heads a group called Eco Amritsar. “We need to do a hell of a lot of work to protect the holy city status of this city.” It’s unclear how much replacing the gold plating would cost, but it would surely be high.

“This is gold. The cost would be huge, but still would not be a problem,” Gunbir Singh said, suggesting Sikh devotees would rally behind the cause if needed. “Most of the activity that goes on there is based on donations — people will take off their bangles and rings and leave them if work needs to be done.”

Thousands of Sikh devotees and tourists every day visit Amritsar, the main city in Punjab state, to see the 17th century shrine, surrounded by a moat known as the “pool of nectar,” or “Sarovar,” and housing the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. Most of the world’s 27 million Sikhs, whose monotheistic religion originated in Punjab in

the 15th century, live in India.

The country suffers some of the world’s worst air pollution, thanks to a heavy reliance on burning coal for electricity, diesel in cars and power generators, and kerosene and cow dung for cooking and lighting homes. Heavy construction amid a decade-long economic boom has also kicked up huge clouds of dust, and farmers still regularly clear their fields with fire, sending even more black carbon into the air.

The capital of New Delhi was named by the WHO as the world’s most polluted city, while Amritsar — about 390 kilometers (240 km) to the north — was ranked India’s ninth most polluted.

The Golden Temple is not the only major monument to be affected by pollution. The white marbled Taj Mahal has also become dirty from pollution from the nearby city of Agra, and every few years, workers from the Archaological Survey of India place mud packs on its walls to keep them from turning yellow and brown.

But many across the country remain unaware of the risks in breathing unhealthy air, even as scientists warn it is sickening countless Indians every year. About 1.4 million Indians were killed by illnesses related to air pollution in 2013, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of British Colombia, in Vancouver. (ap)

South Africa’s top court rules against president in scandal

JOHANNESBURG — South African President Jacob Zuma “failed to uphold” the constitution when he didn’t pay back some of the millions of dollars in state funds used to upgrade his home, South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday.

The ruling could significantly weaken the leader, who is fending off multiple accusations of alleged misconduct at the highest levels of government though he still retained the support of powerful factions in his party, the African National Congress.

The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, said it would immediately begin impeachment proceedings against Zuma. While parliament has the power to remove him, ruling party lawmakers defeated a no-confidence vote against Zuma earlier this year.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng also said that parliament, which is dominated by the ANC, had failed in its obligations by not holding Zuma to account in the spending scandal.

cause of allegedly improper links to the Guptas, a wealthy business family in South Africa. Questions about the extent of the Gupta’s influence have exposed some divisions within the ruling party, particularly after the country’s deputy finance minister said the Gupta family directly offered him the finance minister job in December, around the time that the incumbent, Nhlanhla Nene, was sacked in a move that rattled markets.

Speaking for South Africa’s highest court, Mogoeng said Zuma should not have ignored a state watchdog’s recommendations that he should reimburse state funds spent on his home, known as Nkandla.

The process would need not only long time but courage and consistency, the minister said.

She denied suggestion that the cabinet ministers have been divided over the policy adopted in the marine and fishery sector. She said a decline reported in fish production in some areas was caused by many fish processing plants being not operated. She said some of the fish processing units have been built only to meet the requirement to secure the fish import license with no intention of operating in fish processing industry. Five Indonesian fishermen Mayor sacks two officials who detained in Malaysia ordered subordinates to axe trees

LANGKAT - Five Indonesian fishermen have been arrested by Malaysian maritime police and now held at a Pulau Penang jail.

The traditional fishermen from Sei Bilah, sub-district of Sei Lepan, Langkat , North Sumatra were arrested when they were fishing in the sea on Tuesday.

The five men are Mainan (45), Fajar Bahari (21), Ab Bakar (34), Putra (35) and Sony (27). “We just received the report from relatives of one of the fisher-

men ,” said Azhar Kasim , a community leader in Pangkalan Brandan on Wedenesday. Kasim said he hoped the government would help in the release of the fishermen .

He accused the Malaysian maritime police of kidnapping the fishermen as they were caught in the Indonesian side of the sea border.

It was the fourth time Langkat fishermen caught by Malaysian maritime police in the past three months, he said. (ant)

PALEMBANG - Palembang Mayor Harnojoyo has sacked two officials for violating bylaws as they ordered his subordinates to cut down trees in the heart of the capital of South Sumatra province.

Harnojoyo said here on Wednesday he found several officers of the city street lighting, landscaping and funeral service office (DPJPP) cutting down trees on Monday (March 28) at around 10.00 p.m. local time.

“The two officials were chiefs of the landscaping section and the reforestation sub-section of DPJPP,” he said.

He said he found DPJPP officers cutting down trees in the yard of the Bumbu Desa restaurant while he and other city officials were preparing to monitor the state of cleanliness along the main roads in the city.

The DPJPP officers told the mayor that the two officials had ordered them to cut down the trees.

“This is dangerous. How could they unilaterally order them to cut down trees? Dont they understand the bylaw?” he said.

The mayor also ordered an investigation to check if the restaurant staff was in any way involved in the case as the cutting down of trees could have resulted in expanding its parking lot.

“The matter is being investigated. If the restaurant management is found guilty, its permit will be revoked,” he said. (ap)

Local people are very concern about the care and preservation of the temple architecture and its environment. Not all existing buildings were old buildings here, there are some that have undergone renovation, renewal, and change from 10th century to 13th century and also 18th century AD. The structure and foundation of this temple are very tough and strong. It has the original Balinese ornament that beautifully craved on every building at this temple area. Some ornaments are reflection of The Ramayana Epic story.

Azarenka sets high standards for herself, which is one reason she is undefeated in March. The two-time Grand Slam champion moved one win closer to a rare Indian Wells-Key Biscayne double by beating Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, 6-4, 6-2.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic overcame back spasms to defeat No. 7-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-3. MADRID — Winning the “clasico” against Real Madrid this weekend would be the best way to honor the late Johan Cruyff, Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said Wednesday.

The Dutch soccer great, who died last Thursday of lung cancer at 68, is largely credited with launching the club’s era of trophy success, both as a player and a coach.

“Without a doubt it would be very nice to defeat Madrid and dedicate the victory to Cruyff,” Iniesta said at a news conference in Barcelona. “He gave a lot to us, to our fans and to the world of football.”

Barcelona said there will be a

tribute to Cruyff before the game at the Camp Nou, where a mosaic of 90,000 cards held by fans will display the words “Thanks, Johan,” in Catalan. The words will also appear on Barcelona’s jerseys, replacing the “world champions” shield.

Players from both teams will

enter the field accompanied by children wearing shirts with the same message on the front and with the names of the Cruyff Foundation and Barcelona on the back.

Before kickoff, there will be a minute’s silence and a video presentation in Cruyff’s memory will be shown on the stadium’s big screens. All eight living Barcelona presidents are expected to attend Saturday’s match.

“It will be a special game and hopefully it will give us extra motivation,” Iniesta said. Barcelona

organized four days of mourning for Cruyff and said more than 60,000 fans visited the player’s memorial at the Camp Nou this week. The former player died after a five-month battle with cancer.

The Catalan club enters the game with a nine-point lead over secondplace Atletico Madrid and a 10-point advantage over Real Madrid. A win will virtually eliminate Madrid from the title race. There will be seven rounds left in the Spanish league after this weekend’s games.

Barcelona is enjoying a record

MADRID — Spanish club Valencia has fired coach Gary Neville less than four months after hiring the former England defender. The club made the announcement on Wednesday, nine days after it lost its third game in a row in the Spanish league.

“After careful consideration, the club decided to make a change with the best interests of the Valencia CF moving forward this season,” it said in statement. “We thank Gary for his work at Valencia and wish him the best in the future.” Valencia also released a message from Neville.

“I would like to thank Valencia Football Club, the fans, staff and the players,” he said. “I would have liked to have continued the work I started but understand that we are in a results business and in the 28 games they have not been to my standards or to those which are required by this club.” Valencia won only 10 games under Neville, drawing seven and losing the other 11.

The club said assistant coach Pako Ayestaran will take over the squad until the end of the season. Ayestaran had been with Valencia as an assistant from 2001-04, when it won two Spanish league titles and a UEFA Cup trophy.

He later became an assistant coach with Liverpool, helping the English club win the 2005 Champions League and the 2006 FA Cup. He then worked as head coach for Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel and Santos Laguna and Estudiantes Tecos in Mexico.

Neville was in his first head-coaching job. He spent much of his post-Manchester United playing career as a TV pundit before taking the part-time coaching role with England in 2012. He is expected to rejoin the England squad ahead of the upcoming European Championship in France.

Neville leaves Valencia 14th in the Spanish league standings, only six points above relegation zone.

After Neville took over in December, Valencia went 12 games without a win in the Spanish league. It won two in a row in February, but earned only one other victory after that.

The team has lost three consecutive league games and was eliminated by Spanish rival Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16 of the Europa League. The latest loss was at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday, and before that it had been defeated at last-place Levante.

Rooney excited by competition for England places Injured captain Wayne Rooney is excited to be part of the fierce competition for places in England’s starting line-up for the Euro 2016 finals in France.

The 30-year-old striker’s place in the first-team has come under serious threat from in-form Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, with both leading the scoring charts in the Premier League this campaign.

“I have never taken my place for granted. Obviously, you want to play and it is great that competition is now there. With the quality

we have got, it is exciting to be a part of,” Rooney, England’s record goal-scorer, told ITV on Tuesday.

Rooney has been out since Feb. 13 with a knee ligament problem but is expected to return in time for Manchester United’s league trip to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on April 10. “If everything goes according to plan, I’m back outside running now and I’m hoping to be full training within the next week or 10 days, so not too far away,” Rooney said.

FIFA bans Sunderland’s Eboue for failing to pay former agent

ZURICH — FIFA says Sunderland defender Emmanuel Eboue has been handed a one-year ban from football for failing to pay his former agent.

The world governing body said Thursday the ban will be lifted before it elapses if he pays the out-

standing amount to the agent.

Eboue, a right back from the Ivory Coast, has had a contractual dispute with agent Sebastien Boisseau since 2013, when the player was ordered by a judge on FIFA’s players’ status committee to pay the amount owed to Boisseau.

Eboue was fined 30,000 Swiss francs ($31,000) for failing to comply with the judge’s decision. Eboue failed in an appeal to the Court of Arbitration and because he still hasn’t settled his debt, Boisseau is entitled to request that a one-year ban be imposed on Eboue. (ap)

12 Hungary players, coach, organizers guilty of match-fixing

BUDAPEST — A Hungarian court has handed out suspended prison sentences, bans and fines to 12 soccer players, a coach and the two organizers of match-fixing incidents which took place from 2007-2009 involving Budapest’s REAC team.

The Pest District Court said Wednesday that the players re-

ceived up to 2,500 euros ($2,840) each per match to ensure results in seven matches in Hungary’s top division and league cup.

Two players were acquitted even though they accepted bribes because they did not play in the matches in question and the statute of limitations had expired.

REAC director Robert Kutasi killed himself in 2012, shortly after several players were taken into police custody on allegations of match-fixing.

Two other similar trials, including one involving referees allegedly fixing international matches, are still ongoing. (ap)

Tri Kahyangan or Tri Murti including 3 temples : Desa or Village Temple as a place to worship of God Brahma (the Creator) Puseh Temple to worship of God Vishnu (the Preserver) Dalem Temple to worship of Lord Shiva (the Destroyer) The name “Batuan” or “Baturan” mentioned here prompts villagers to joke about being “tough as stone” or “eating rocks” as batu means “stone” in Balinese.

But it likely refers to an ancient megalithic tradition in which standing stones served as meeting places and ceremonial sites for the worship of ancestral spirits.

Because Batuan became a center from which Buddhist priests and brahmans spread to the main court centers of south Bali, the village has an unusual preponderance of brahman.

Local people are very concern about the care and preservation of the temple architecture and its environment. Not all existing buildings were old buildings here, there are some that have undergone renovation, renewal, and change from 10th century to 13th century and also 18th century AD. The structure and foundation of this temple are very tough and strong. It has the original Balinese ornament that beautifully craved on every building at this temple area. Some ornaments are reflection of The Ramayana Epic story.

Azarenka sets high standards for herself, which is one reason she is undefeated in March. The two-time Grand Slam champion moved one win closer to a rare Indian Wells-Key Biscayne double by beating Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, 6-4, 6-2.

India’s once-gleaming Golden Temple dulled by air pollution

AMRITSAR — The chronic air pollution blanketing much of northern India is now threatening the holiest shrine in the Sikh religion, making the once-gleaming walls of the Golden Temple dingy and dull.

There is little to be done short of replacing the 430-year-old temple’s gold-plated walls — an expensive project already undertaken more than a century ago and then again in 1999.

To cut down on pollution, environmentalists and religious leaders have launched a campaign that includes persuading farmers to stop burning spent crops to clear their fields, removing industry from the area and cutting back on traffic. A community kitchen called a “langar” that serves up to 100,000 people free meals every day at the temple is also switching from burning wood to cooking with gas.

But so far the campaign hasn’t had much impact, with change happening slowly and still no pollution monitoring equipment installed.

“As far as pollution goes, we are paying attention,” said Jaswant Singh, environmental engineer at the State Pollution Control Board, a government regulatory authority.

“We are in the process of procuring equipment so that we can check the pollution area, pollution from every source on a day-to-day basis.”

Officials have also banned burning trash or cooking with certain fuels in restaurants and communi-

ties nearby, but enforcement so far remains weak. The city also wants to build an electricity station to stop people from using diesel-fueled generators, but Singh could not say when that might happen.

“The pollution degrading the Golden Temple is growing,” said environmental activist Gunbir Singh, who heads a group called Eco Amritsar. “We need to do a hell of a lot of work to protect the holy city status of this city.” It’s unclear how much replacing the gold plating would cost, but it would surely be high.

“This is gold. The cost would be huge, but still would not be a problem,” Gunbir Singh said, suggesting Sikh devotees would rally behind the cause if needed. “Most of the activity that goes on there is based on donations — people will take off their bangles and rings and leave them if work needs to be done.”

Thousands of Sikh devotees and tourists every day visit Amritsar, the main city in Punjab state, to see the 17th century shrine, surrounded by a moat known as the “pool of nectar,” or “Sarovar,” and housing the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. Most of the world’s 27 million Sikhs, whose monotheistic religion originated in Punjab in

the 15th century, live in India.

The country suffers some of the world’s worst air pollution, thanks to a heavy reliance on burning coal for electricity, diesel in cars and power generators, and kerosene and cow dung for cooking and lighting homes. Heavy construction amid a decade-long economic boom has also kicked up huge clouds of dust, and farmers still regularly clear their fields with fire, sending even more black carbon into the air.

The capital of New Delhi was named by the WHO as the world’s most polluted city, while Amritsar — about 390 kilometers (240 km) to the north — was ranked India’s ninth most polluted.

The Golden Temple is not the only major monument to be affected by pollution. The white marbled Taj Mahal has also become dirty from pollution from the nearby city of Agra, and every few years, workers from the Archaological Survey of India place mud packs on its walls to keep them from turning yellow and brown.

But many across the country remain unaware of the risks in breathing unhealthy air, even as scientists warn it is sickening countless Indians every year. About 1.4 million Indians were killed by illnesses related to air pollution in 2013, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of British Colombia, in Vancouver. (ap)

South Africa’s top court rules against president in scandal

JOHANNESBURG — South African President Jacob Zuma “failed to uphold” the constitution when he didn’t pay back some of the millions of dollars in state funds used to upgrade his home, South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday.

The ruling could significantly weaken the leader, who is fending off multiple accusations of alleged misconduct at the highest levels of government though he still retained the support of powerful factions in his party, the African National Congress.

The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, said it would immediately begin impeachment proceedings against Zuma. While parliament has the power to remove him, ruling party lawmakers defeated a no-confidence vote against Zuma earlier this year.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng also said that parliament, which is dominated by the ANC, had failed in its obligations by not holding Zuma to account in the spending scandal.

cause of allegedly improper links to the Guptas, a wealthy business family in South Africa. The process would need not only long time but courage and consistency, the minister said.

She said a decline reported in fish production in some areas was caused by many fish processing plants being not operated. She said some of the fish processing units have been built only to meet the requirement to secure the fish import license with no intention of operating in fish processing industry. Five Indonesian fishermen Mayor sacks two officials who detained in Malaysia ordered subordinates to axe trees

LANGKAT - Five Indonesian fishermen have been arrested by Malaysian maritime police and now held at a Pulau Penang jail.

The traditional fishermen from Sei Bilah, sub-district of Sei Lepan, Langkat , North Sumatra were arrested when they were fishing in the sea on Tuesday.

The five men are Mainan (45), Fajar Bahari (21), Ab Bakar (34), Putra (35) and Sony (27). “We just received the report from relatives of one of the fisher-

men ,” said Azhar Kasim , a community leader in Pangkalan Brandan on Wedenesday. Kasim said he hoped the government would help in the release of the fishermen .

He accused the Malaysian maritime police of kidnapping the fishermen as they were caught in the Indonesian side of the sea border.

It was the fourth time Langkat fishermen caught by Malaysian maritime police in the past three months, he said. (ant)

PALEMBANG - Palembang Mayor Harnojoyo has sacked two officials for violating bylaws as they ordered his subordinates to cut down trees in the heart of the capital of South Sumatra province.

Harnojoyo said here on Wednesday he found several officers of the city street lighting, landscaping and funeral service office (DPJPP) cutting down trees on Monday (March 28) at around 10.00 p.m. local time.

“The two officials were chiefs of the landscaping section and the reforestation sub-section of DPJPP,” he said.

He said he found DPJPP officers cutting down trees in the yard of the Bumbu Desa restaurant while he and other city officials were preparing to monitor the state of cleanliness along the main roads in the city.

The DPJPP officers told the mayor that the two officials had ordered them to cut down the trees.

“This is dangerous. How could they unilaterally order them to cut down trees? Dont they understand the bylaw?” he said.

The mayor also ordered an investigation to check if the restaurant staff was in any way involved in the case as the cutting down of trees could have resulted in expanding its parking lot.

“The matter is being investigated. If the restaurant management is found guilty, its permit will be revoked,” he said. (ap)

LONDON — In spite of a modest improvement in inflation that had its roots in the services sector, consumer prices across the 19-country eurozone fell in the year to March for the second month running, official figures showed Thursday.

In its estimate for the month, Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics agency, said the headline inflation rate was minus 0.1 percent against the previous month’s reading of minus 0.2 percent. The modest uptick was in line with market expectations following recent figures showing a solid pick-up in German inflation.

Eurostat said the services sector

is likely to have had the biggest impact in nudging up the headline rate, while energy prices once again provided the biggest drag.

One development that may cheer policymakers at the European Central Bank was the news that the core rate, which strips out the volatile items of food, alcohol, energy and tobacco, rose to 1 percent from 0.8 percent. Still, both rates remain well below what the ECB wants — inflation at just below 2 percent.

The ECB has enacted a series of stimulus measures, such as cutting interest rates and buying government bonds in the markets, in order to get inflation back to target. Since

the last stimulus package was announced this month, few analysts think the central bank will do anything further soon. But in the longer-term, many economists think the ECB may have to do more.

The ECB is worried that low or negative inflation will prompt even more economic stagnation in the eurozone.

A consistent drop in prices, known as deflation, can choke the life out of an economy mainly by enticing consumers to delay big purchases beyond everyday needs such as food and energy in the knowledge that they will cost less down the line.(ap)

Prime Minister David Cameron held a crisis meeting at 10 Downing St., and said the government would do “everything it can” to keep steelmaking in Britain. But, he said, “this is a difficult situation. There’s no guarantee of success.”

“This industry is in difficulty right across the world,” Cameron said. “There’s been a collapse in prices, there’s massive overcapacity.”

The steel industry in Britain, like many developed economies, has been hit hard by cheap Chinese imports, which have depressed prices, and manufacturers have asked the government and European Union to impose anti-dumping duties.

Tata Steel, which operates the country’s biggest steel plant at Port Talbot in south Wales, is losing 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) a day in its U.K. operations.

This is not necessarily a sign of gender discrimination, but a general prohibition against blood on holy ground.

If you are invited to a ceremony in someone’s home, such as a wedding or baby ceremony, it is appropriate to bring a small, wrapped gift. A card is not necessary.

Like in many other parts of the world, the left hand is considered unclean, and to eat with it, point with it, shake hands with it or offer or receive something with it is perceived as extremely rude.

Shorts and sleeveless tops are fine for the beach and for shopping, but when visiting cultural sights or small villages they may be seen as offensive.

Many people have joined in these businesses by spending tens of millions of rupiahs on them, but this money will surely get absorbed overseas. Whereas if this same money is deposited in local banks, saved or invested within the country it could serve to drive national economic growth, he explained.

DENPASAR - Since the issuance of Law No. 6/2014 on ‘the village fund’, a relatively large amount of the federal budget is being disbursed to villages across Indonesia. However the funds for 2015 have not all been disbursed yet due to a number of new rules from the central government that had to be adjusted.

I.B. Bima, Headman of Kesimen, Kertalangu, Denpasar, who is also chief of the Headman Communication Forum of Denpasar, recently revealed that the use of the village funds that were disbursed in the City of Denpasar last year, were especially well managed.

As for the fiscal year 2016, so far there have been no disbursements made, although according to existing provisions ‘the village fund’ can be disbursed gradually.

Last year the funds were given out in three stages. “The fund has been disbursed yet this year, but we are still in March” explained Bima.

‘The village fund allocation” (ADD) that was disbursed through the government of Denpasar’ regional budget in 2015 was quite large amounting to IDR 69.7 billion in all but was given out in three phases, the first of which took place in July 2015 was disbursed to all the villages in this area, but it only amounted to 40 percent of the total budget.

As reported previously, 26 customary villages declared their opposition to the Benoa Bay reclamation

plan by way of consensus through customary meetings. The 26 customary villages that have made a moral agreement (pasubayan) the villages of: Tanjung Benoa, Bualu, Jimbaran, Kedonganan, Kelan, Tuban, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Berawa, Canggu and Buduk (in the district of Badung) Kepaon, Pemogan, Pedungan, Sesetan, Serangan, Sanur, Intaran Sanur and Penyaringan Sanur, (in the Municipality of Denpasar), Lebih and Ketewel (in the district of Gianyar), as well as Seraya, Bugbug, and Culik (in the district of Karangasem).

Most recently, Pasedahan in Karangasem and Lembeng (Sukawati), Gianyar have also also declared their opposition. Thus, bringing the total number of villages that are officially opposed to the reclamation of Benoa Bay to 28 Customary Village. (kmb32)

WASHINGTON — Working to display a united front, the United States and key Asian countries will seek Thursday to put more pressure on North Korea as world leaders open a nuclear security summit in Washington.

President Barack Obama, the summit’s host, will also seek to smooth over tensions with China over cybersecurity and maritime disputes as he and President Xi Jinping meet on the sidelines. The summit also offers Obama his last major chance to focus global attention on disparate nuclear security threats before his term ends early next year.

Though nuclear terrorism and the Islamic State group top this year’s agenda, concerns about North Korea’s nuclear weapons program are also commanding focus as the two-day summit gets under way.

Those long-simmering concerns have escalated of late following the North’s recent nuclear test and rocket launch.

Obama planned to have a joint meeting Thursday morning with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Park Geun-hye, two U.S. treaty al-

lies deeply concerned about North Korea. It’s a reprise of a similar meeting the three countries held in 2014 during the last nuclear security summit in The Hague.

China’s influence over the North will be front and center later in the day when Obama sits down with Xi. The White House said that meeting was also an opportunity for Obama to press U.S. concerns about human rights and China’s assertive territorial claims in waters far off its coast.

Though frictions with China remain high, the U.S. was encouraged

by China’s role in passing stringent new U.N. sanctions on North Korea, its traditional ally. Now the U.S. is pressing Beijing to implement those sanctions dutifully.

“The international community must remain united in the face of North Korea’s continued provocations, including its recent nuclear test and missile launches,” Obama

wrote in an op-ed appearing Thursday in The Washington Post. He added that the recent U.N. sanctions “show that violations have consequences.”

The U.S. and South Korea have been discussing whether to deploy a U.S. missile defense system called THAAD, or the Terminal HighAltitude Area Defense, in South Korea to counter the threat from the North. China has resisted that step out of concern it would also give the U.S. radar coverage over Chinese territory, and Russia opposes it as well.

Antony Blinken, the U.S. deputy secretary of state, said this week that China must engage with the U.S. directly on North Korea if it wants to avoid the U.S. and its partners taking steps “that it won’t like.”

In North Korea, meanwhile, the government has been churning out regular propaganda pieces condemning the U.S. and South Korea, while warning it could launch a pre-emptive strike against South Korea or even the U.S. mainland at any time.(ap)

PRISTINA — Kosovo’s outgoing president, Ahtifete Jahjaga, said Thursday international experts have concluded that a border demarcation deal with Montenegro is in line with international standards.

Three experts from the U.S., Britain and Germany considered as regular the process of establishing the border with neighboring Montenegro. That has been harshly opposed by the country’s political opposition, which claims Kosovo is losing thousands of hectares of land.

“From the legal and technical point of view the international experts have found no violation of the demarcation process between Kosovo and Montenegro,” Jahjaga said. She added, however, that the experts considered the process needed to be “more transparent.”

Jahjaga created the ad hoc commission as part of attempts to lay the basis of a political dialogue in the country, efforts that have always been turned down by the opposition.

Kosovo’s political life has been in turmoil since last September as the opposition has disrupted Parliament’s work and its supporters have clashed with police. They also oppose a deal with Serbia giving more powers to ethnic Serbs in Kosovo.

The opposition, which is now boycotting Parliament, on Thursday did not accept the experts’ conclusion and said it will continue the anti-government protests.

“The united opposition considers that the findings of this international team ... are an evaluation made for the President’s needs and as such cannot be reflected in the need of border correction with Montenegro,” a statement said.

Prime Minister Isa Mustafa’s government hailed the experts’ findings, saying they were in line with previous findings of the U.S. Department of State and should settle the issue.

The U.S. embassy in Pristina also welcomed the conclusion of the ad hoc commission and urged Kosovo and Montenegro “to take steps to improve border management and strengthen cooperation.”

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, an act that Serbia still rejects.(ap)

FDA grants use of experimental blood test for Zika screening

WASHINGTON — Federal health officials are granting use of an experimental test to screen blood donations for Zika virus, an emergency step designed to protect local blood supplies from the mosquito-borne virus.

The action means U.S. territories with active Zika infections, primarily Puerto Rico, will be able to resume collecting and screening their own blood. Earlier this month, the island of 3.5 million barred local donations and began importing blood from the U.S., following recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA said Wednesday that use of the test could be expanded if the virus spreads to other areas of the U.S. Currently no states have reported local, mosquito-transmitted Zika cases. However, some experts say some of the problems facing Puerto Rico now may be repeated later this year in Florida, Texas and other Southern states where officials think mosquito-borne outbreaks of Zika may occur.

“In the future, should Zika virus transmission occur in other areas, blood collection establishments will be able to continue to collect blood and use the investigational screening test, minimizing disruption to the blood supply,” said Dr. Peter Marks, director of FDA’s center for biologics.

Last month the FDA advised U.S. blood banks to refuse donations from people who have travelled to Zika-affected regions

in the previous four weeks. Those guidelines remain in effect.

The test authorized by the FDA is made by Roche Molecular Systems, a division of the Swiss health care conglomerate.

Zika is spreading rapidly through Latin America. While most people experience either mild or no symptoms, Zika is suspected of causing a devastating birth defect — babies born with abnormally small heads — and pregnant Americans are urged to avoid travel to affected areas.

Puerto Rico has 350 confirmed cases of the virus, including 40 pregnant women. Two of those women have given birth to healthy babies. Health authorities have said they are not tracking suspected cases.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said tens of thousands of IUDs and other forms of birth control are badly needed in Puerto Rico to help prevent unintended pregnancies during an outbreak of Zika there.

Earlier this month, the CDC and the FDA authorized emergency use of a separate laboratory test to diagnose Zika infection in patients.

The test was distributed to a limited number of U.S. and international laboratories.(ap)

High-intensity workout injuries spawn cottage industry

MIAMI — After a few weeks of working out at CrossFit, Charles Banfield says his back hurt constantly and his joints felt terrible.

The 47-year-old’s aches and pains were so bad, he initially blamed his bed and purchased a new mattress.

After feeling a searing pain during a particularly grueling exercise, the Los Angeles-based CEO of an event planning company learned he’d torn his Achilles tendon. “You miss one step and you could really hurt yourself,” Banfield said.

Though there have not yet been in-depth studies, some chiropractors, doctors and trainers say stories like Banfield’s have become more frequent with the increasing popularity of high-intensity interval training espoused by CrossFit and other similar hybrid workout gyms.

Such workouts include highimpact moves like jumping onto platforms and are performed during a shorter period of time, often without a break to maximize benefits, but some experts say they strain

participants’ bodies beyond what they’re meant to endure as they sling sledgehammers over their shoulders and perfect headstand pushups.

The notion that people are overdoing it has spawned an offshoot industry aimed at delivering lowerimpact exercise or to help those recovering from injuries to continue breaking a sweat but without exacerbating their problems.

Many people who do the highintensity workouts aren’t adequately conditioned for such rigorous workouts, or have back and spine conditions that could worsen, said Marc Umlas, chief of orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, who said his office has seen an increase in injuries from workouts at CrossFit and similar programs.

“They plunge headfirst into a high intensity workout and they get injured,” Umlas said. Torn tendons and ligaments are a common result, he added. (ap)

BANGLI— Tourists have been complaining to tour guides in Kintamani about the chaotic arrangement of tourist attractions as well as the issue of levees being collected several times for a single location.

Chief of the Abang Erawang tourist attraction, Nengah Suratnata, said on Wednesday (Mar. 30) that part from general chaos, the the the most common complaint from

tourists is being charged more than once in Kintamani as well as the general chaos.

Suratnata explained that visitors entering the area of Kintamani are

made to pay admission at several government posts - like at Sekardadi. Tourists visiting Kintamani are also subjected to other levies when entering some specific locations like the lake, mountain or Batur Temple even though these attractions are Kintamani run attractions. Suratnata said that visitors do not so much complain about the

cost of the admission tickets but the fact that they are charged so many times. “They are confused about why they have to pay for admission to the area in general and also for specific locations” he said.

He added that many travelers also complain about the increase in the price levies that was imposed by the government at the beginning of

2015. Most travelers consider the 200-percent increase in the price of levies is not justified by facilities that are provided. “Necessarily, an increase int eh price of admission should be coupled with improvements to facilities. But, the reality is not so. This is frequently complained about by travelers” said Suratnata. (kmb40)

Land conversion threatens food security

BANGLI— So far, the district of Bangli remains safe in terms of the availability of local food.

Nevertheless, the Food Security Council (DKP) is anticipating potential problems in the face of the rampant conversion of agricultural lands into buildings that necessarily translates into less locally grown food -especially rice.

Chief of the Bangli Food Security Office, Wayan Sarma, when met on Tuesday (Mar 30), explained that last year (2015), Bangli produced 27,604 tons of food through strategic food production: 16,568 tons of rice; 1,731 tons of corn; 2,441 tons of cassava, and 4,612 tons of sweet potatoes. 8,85 tons of noncarbohydrates were also produced or 31.82 percent of the total about of food produced.

According to Sarma, this amount of food makes Bangli “food-safe”,

and added that there was even a surplus of some 2,228 tons. The surplus occurred because Bangli’s total population of 222,600 people requires 25,376 tons of food. Although the Food Security Office recognizes that there is presently enough food being produced, they are remaining alert to the threat of land conversions. It is well know that lots of land in Bali is being converted from agricultural into buildings, and this is feared to have an impact on food availability.

Given this potential threat, people are being encouraged to reduce the amount of rice that they consume and to instead replace it with other locally grown carbohydrates.

“Local food processing technology also needs to be developed so as to extend the amount of time that food can be stored” added Sarma. (kmb40)

Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) of the ASEAN Economic Community.

The government has set tourism as the leading sector for these service industries, in order to generate foreign exchange and create many large job opportunities. This year, tourism is targeted to deliver 12 million foreign visors and 260 million domestic tourist and is estimated to generate income worth IDR 172.8 trillion and absorbs 11.7 million workers.

The national coordination meeting of Tourism Vocational Schools was attended by 400 participants from all over Indonesia and representatives of ministries and institutions related to tourism human resource development through certification in accordance with the standard of the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement. Oliver Stone to get top award at Nantucket Film Festival

NANTUCKET — Three-time Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter and producer Oliver Stone, whose movies on often controversial historical topics have had widespread cultural impact, has been named recipient of the top award at this year’s Nantucket Film Festival.

Stone is scheduled to receive the Screenwriters Tribute Award at this year’s festival scheduled for June 22-27. He won a best writing Oscar in 1979 for “Midnight Express,” and best director Oscars in 1987 for “Platoon” and in 1990 for “Born on the Fourth of July.”

His current project is “Snowden,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, the man who leaked classified NSA documents.

Stone served in the Army in Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star.

Comedian and talk show host Seth Meyers is scheduled to host the awards ceremony.(ap)

KOLKATA - At least 14 people have been killed and 150 are feared trapped after a partially built flyover collapsed in the Indian city of Kolkata, according to police. Witnesses say rescuers are using their bare hands to try to save those caught under the rubble.

Television footage shows people passing water bottles through to

those who are crying out for help from beneath the debris.

One witness has told the New Delhi Television news channel (NDTV): “We heard a loud rumble and then saw a lot of dust in the sky.”

Another added: “The area was very, very crowded. Motorised rickshaws, taxis ... there was a lot of traffic.” Large concrete slabs from the construction site fell onto traffic

below, reports said.

Heavy duty cranes have apparently been brought in to move the wreckage, but attempts have so far been unsuccessful.Senior police officer Akhilesh Chaturvedi said 15 critically injured people had been rescued.

NEW YORK — Michelle Fiala says her 14-year-old daughter, Laura, is fine watching humans run for their lives from snarling, flesh-eating zombies on AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” but if one of the characters vomits, the teen has to look away.

“My youngest has a real thing about seeing people vomit,” the St. Louis mom said in a recent interview. “She’s got a real phobia about that. She’s totally fine when they’re stabbing zombies in the head or there’s fake blood flying or the zombies are eating people, but when (a character) Denise leaned over and threw up ... she had to turn away. She couldn’t handle that.”

Fiala’s 16-year-old daughter, Emma, also watches after the three discovered the hit series on Netflix about a month ago.

Humans battling a zombie apocalypse may not feel like family fare in the grand tradition of “The Ed Sullivan Show,” ‘’The Carol Burnett Show” or “American Idol,” but

the family has plenty of company.

Ericka Calcagno of Farmington Hills, Michigan, looks forward to watching the show with her 12year-old daughter, Gina, and son Jean-Luc, who is 9. She said her husband first introduced her to the series, and her kids were intrigued by their conversations about it.

“It’s so outside of what would be my usual genre for television,” said Fiala. “I came home from work one day and my kids were sitting on the couch watching like, ‘You have to come watch this!” I was sucked in pretty immediately. You get sucked in by the characters. We have our favorites. It surprises me still that I’m that into it.” “’The Walking Dead’ is like the new ‘Family Ties,’ OK? It’s tying families together,” said actress and playwright Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne on the show. “The thing that’s touched me the most is when I’ve met mothers of adolescent sons who say, ‘This is how me and my son bond. It’s because we both watch the show.’And you know those adolescent years are tricky years for parents and I was just so touched by that. I thought it was so beautiful that this show is functioning in that way.”(ap)

Bali must head for quality tourism

D E N PASAR - Oversupply of hotel rooms in Bali, especially in South Bali, should be addressed immediately. In addition to resulting in a tariff war, the excessive hotel rooms also shift the image of Bali

tourism into mass tourism. Actually, the Island of the Gods should lead to quality tourism that can be sustainable.

“To make it sustainable, a few things must be considered. First of all, the culture must remain sustainable and never be degraded

and so must the environment.

Excessive tourist accommodation certainly causes many problems.

As mentioned above, the tariff war will generate lower taxes obtained by the government,” said Chairman of the Bali Tourism Community Alliance (AMPB), Gusti Kade

Other than tax issues, added Sutawa, employee’s income is also getting lower. Proliferation of hotels is no longer comparable to the number of incoming guests.
