The existence of adverse weather condition occurring recently at Bali Strait made passengers always worried about their salvation. One of those passengers was Ismadi, who admitted last Sunday (Jun 27) that frequent incident of ships drifted by streams at Bali Strait always made him apprehensive. “Before crossing, I asked for information to a friend who had contact to harbormaster related to the crossing when I leave. I am afraid if my journey will get hampered,” said Ismadi having an affair in Java. This passenger was reasonable to feel concerned because the ship he traveled with was often shaky because of slammed by big waves. Effect of adverse weather on the smoothness of crossing kept on occurring. Moreover, vehicles that would cross to Java were often trapped in long queue even though it did not reach the road area. Previously, fast wind and swift ocean currents caused the passenger motor vessel (KMP) Dharma Ferry 1 that would anchor onto the pier at Ketapang about 7:40 pm at Local Time to drift away southwardly about 100 meters from the pier of landing craft machine (LCM). According to the Head of Gilimanuk Harbormaster, Dewa Nyoman Kari, the vessel owned by PT Dharma Lautan was once swept away because it suddenly got slammed by big waves, drifted by ocean currents and fast winds when it would anchor. A number of points in Denpasar engulfed by flood Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Intermittent rains flushing Denpasar since last Saturday (Jun 26) night until Sunday (Jun 27) morning made a number of points in Denpasar to be engulfed by stagnant water. Although it was not as severe as the flooding in last 2008, but stagnant water at number of roads in Denpasar City caused inconveniences to local residents. Moreover, for those passing through Jalan Raya Puputan would encounter some points of the road were submerged by quite high water. Luckily, such flood condition did not last long. The floods were discernible at some densely populated areas such as at Monang Maning, Jalan Kaliasem, Jalan Puputan, Jalan Tukad Batanghari and Jalan Tukad Pakerisan. Monitoring held Sunday morning at locations showed the rain showering Denpasar since the previous night triggered water stagnant at some areas, whereas it rained not so hard. Even, at Medwi Hamlet, Jalan Imam Bonjol, the water running from surrounding river overflowed again into the house of citizens. Head of Building Technical Unit of Denpasar City, Udiyana, said some flooding points in Denpasar indeed could not be handled. Despite it did not rain hard, some of these areas had always been engulfed by regular flooding. He exemplified, in the area of Jalan Subur and Jalan Batok at Monang Maning had been always engulfed by flooding for long time, but up to these days could not have been resolved. “This is a lowland area often becoming the center
of flood. In addition, the capacity of water flow today is very narrow, so it had to wait until the water in the river recedes,” he said. Admittedly, some handlings had already been undertaken at some points existing in Denpasar City, such as by creating a larger drainage to accommodate the discharged water during the rains. However, the solution did not get a perfect outcome. His party said at some areas of Monang-Maning should be dredged and re-elevated to tackle the next flooding. “Otherwise, those areas will continue to be engulfed by floods,” he said. He added, technically the handling of flood had actually been reviewed for several times by the Public Works of Bali Province and Denpasar City, but up to now in some regions could not be resolved, such by the making of canal shortcut in several river basins. This measure could reduce the number of flood-affected areas. Meanwhile, for some other flood
areas such as Jalan Tukad Pakerisan, Jalan Raya Puputan and Jalan Kaliasem could be seen the water had started receding after the rain subsided. But, some residents still complained about the incident. One of the residents, Roni, said the region had become a regular destination of flooding for so long, but until now solution had not been made to address the problem. “Just a little rain water has made the water stagnant, so the activity of residents gets disturbed if this condition is disregarded like this,” said Roni last Sunday. In the meantime, Spokesperson of Denpasar City Government, Erwin Suryadarma, recognized that the rain flushing Denpasar had caused water stagnant at a number of areas. Indeed, he said, such stagnant water could not be called as flood because when the rain stopped, the water had already receded. Calonarang: The King, the Witch and the Priest At the beginning of 7th century, a Balinese prince becomes the king of Java, the great Erlangga. His mother, Mahendradatta, was a Javanese princess who ruled Bali with her Balinese husband, Dharmodayana, until the husband, suspecting her of practising evil magic, exiled her to the forest. When Erlangga’s father died, leaving Mahendradatta as a rangda or a widow, she conspired to use her band of pupils trained in the black arts to destroy Erlangga’s kingdom. Her chief grudge against Erlangga because of fancied insults to her beautiful daughter, Ratna Menggali – the noblemen of Daha had refused her in marriage for fear of her mother’s evil reputation. Calonarang (Erlangga’s mother who practising evil magic) went with
her pupils to the cemetery and they prayed and danced in honour of Begawati, the deity of black magic, to help them destroy Daha. The goddes appeared and danced with them, granting her permission, warning the witch, however, to preserve the center of the kingdom untouched. The witches danced at the crossroads and soon people fell in great numbers. Discovering the cause of the epidemic, Erlangga ordered his soldiers
to go and kill the witch. They stole into her house while she slept and stabbed her in the heart , but Calonarang awoke unhurt and consumed the daring soldiers with her own fire. The witch went once more into the cemetery and danced with her pupils, dug out corpses, cutting them into pieces, eating the members, drinking the blood, and wearing the entrails as necklaces. Begawati appeared again and joined in the bloody banquet, but warned Calonarang to be careful. The witches danced once more at the crossroads and the dreadful epidemic ravaged the land, the vassals of Erlangga died before they could even bury the corpses they bore

to the cemeteries. The desperate king sent for Mpu Bharada, the holy man from Lemah Tulis, the only living being who could vanquish the witch. Mpu Bharada planned his campaign carefully. He sent Bahula, his young assistant, to ask for the witch daughter’s in marriage. Highly flattered, the mother gave her consent and after a happy and passionate honeymoon, Bahula learned from his wife the secret of Calonarang’s power. The possession of a little magic book which he stole and turned over to his master. The holy man copied it and had it returned before the disappearance could be noticed. The book was a manual of righteousness and had
to be read backwards. The holy man was then able to restore life to those victims whose bodies had not yet decayed. Armed with the new knowledge, he accused the witch of her crimes, but she challenged him by setting an enormous Banyan tree on fire by a single look of her fiery eyes. Bharada foiled the enraged witch by restoring the tree, and she turned her fire against the holy man. Unmoved, he killed her with one of her own mantras, but she died in her monstrous form and Bharada, to absolve her of her crimes and enable her to atone for them, revived her, gave her human appearance, and then killed her again. Pouring heavy rain at Gianyar on early morning Sunday (27/6) caused devastations in some areas due to flood, fallen tree, even erosion damaging rice fields and houses. There are no casualties in this incident but it is concerning the local residents. Abianbase Kelod and Seronggo Tengah were worst hit. Seronggo Tengah has two houses under water, owned by Dewa Nyoman Parta and Ni Ketut Siwi. The overflowing river water discharge from the upstream sneaks through their gardens around 3 am wita. Ni Ketut Siwi heard the water’s noise coming in then was shocked as it went in to the bedroom and also reached 50 cm in the kitchen. The condition made the two neighboring families could not sleep
all morning. Not only flooding houses at Seronggo, the overflowing water caused three houses in the border of Seronggo Village and Abianbase Village, owned by Mr Edi, Ketut Gede Ariana and Wayan Suarmika, almost eroded. Shops nearby were victims too as the water eroded the river’s mouth 8 meters deep where the barrier to the shops and gardens were. Other incidents were eroded farming fields at Lebih Village, a palm tree fell down and also landslides panicked road users around Abangan-Campuhan, Ubud. The overseas workers distribution was assessed failed by many officials including Gianyar House of Representatives. Gianyar Regent and his staff are then planning to turn the IDR 500 million allocated for the distribution program to be used for a program focusing on the local residents’ skills training. When asked to confirm last Wednesday (23/6), Gianyar Regent, Tjok Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, admitted about the failure. The program was carried out by Labor Agency and Transmigration who socialized to villages through village officials announcing the government has prepared a budget to those who wants to work overseas.
But this program was losing competition with labor distribution service institutions and tourism schools who also prepared budgets for sending overseas workers such as working in cruise ships. So the people were helped through these and used their budget instead. With that condition, the Regent then planned to change the budget’s allocation held at Regional Development Bank (BPD) to be used for increasing people’s skills in a form of trainings which prepares them going to the working world. It is not known what it’ll be like yet, the region government is still researching and coordinating with officials involved so that this skills training can be given right on target. (kmb16)

CANBERRA, Australia – Australia’s first woman prime minister on Monday announced minimum changes to her cabinet in a reshuffle that analysts say points to an election within weeks. Buoyed by opinion polls endorsing her new leadership, Prime Minister Julia Gillard promoted no fresh ministers to her cabinet ahead of an election she is set to call before the end of the year. Former Trade Minister Simon Crean takes over Gillard’s portfolios of employment, industrial relations and social inclusion. Foreign Minister Stephen Smith adds trade to his portfolio. “It is best to have as limited a reshuffle as possible to keep maximum stability among the team and to keep our focus on the work that Australians need the government to be doing,” she told reporters. Norman Abjorensen, an Australian National University political scientist, said the scant cabinet changes betrayed Gillard’s plans to call an election soon. Broader changes would have burdened Gillard with more inexperienced ministers who needed time to establish themselves before she could risk going to the voters. Abjorensen predicted an election by Aug. 28 if a spectacular rise in the government’s popularity revealed in a respected opinion poll on Monday was maintained over the next few weeks. A survey by Newspoll, a Sydney-based market research company part-owned by News Corp., published in The Australian newspaper on Monday found that the center-left government’s public support had bounced back to the levels it had enjoyed before Rudd’s popularity crashed in April. Rudd, elected in 2007, had been one of the most popular Australian prime ministers of modern times until he made a series of policy backflips. Many voters then abandoned Labor for the left-wing minor opposition Australian Greens party, earlier Newspolls indicated. But with Gillard at the helm, Labor support had climbed seven percentage points to 42 percent since the previous Newspoll was conducted June 18-20. Greens support had slipped from 15 to 10 percent while the main opposition coalition remained steady at 40 percent. The latest Newspoll is based on a random national telephone survey of 1,142 voters at the weekend and has a 3 percentage point margin of error. Lesser known polls published at the weekend also showed the government gained popularity through the leadership change. Newspoll chief executive Martin O’Shannessy said he expected that Gillard would call an election if her popularity was sustained in the next Newspoll or two. CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denounced Israel as a “genocidal” government on Sunday as he hosted Syrian President Bashar Assad on his first visit to Latin America. Chavez has drawn close to Syria and Iran, and cut ties with Israel last year to protest its military offensive in the Gaza Strip. “We have common enemies,” Chavez said, describing them as “the Yankee empire, the genocidal state of Israel.” Chavez had particularly strong words for Israel throughout Assad’s visit. He reiterated his view Saturday that the Golan Heights — captured from Syria by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war — should one
day be returned to Syria. “Someday the genocidal state of Israel will be put in its place, in the proper place and hopefully a real democratic state will be born,” Chavez said Saturday. “But it has become the murderous arm of the Yankee empire — who can doubt it? — which threatens all of us.” Assad on Sunday called Israel a state “based on crime, slaughter.” “It’s a state without limits,” he said through an interpreter. North Korea issues new warning to U.S. over truce village Reuters
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea warned of military action against South Korea and the United States Monday, claiming the allied forces had brought “heavy weapons” into the DMZ truce village of Panmunjom. Reclusive North Korea, the focus of stalled six-party talks aimed at halting its nuclear weapons program, also said it had no choice but to bolster its nuclear deterrent in the face of a hostile United States. The North, accused by the South and the United States of sinking one of its naval vessels in March, has already raised tension to a new height by threatening war if it is punished
for the naval attack which it says was fabricated by the South. South Korean and U.S. forces remain in a tense standoff with the North at Panmunjom that straddles the Demilitarised Zone after it was established at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. “U.S. forces introduced weapons (to the truce village) at around 7:25 a.m. on June 26,” the North’s official KCNA news agency said, quoting its military, adding that the weapons must be withdrawn immediately. “If it does not comply with the principled demand of the Korean People’s Army, strong military counter-measures will be taken in the area,” the agency said. North Korea’s military, with 1.2 mil-
lion troops, is one of the largest in the world. The two sides are technically still at war as the 1950-53 conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty. A U.S. military spokesman could not immediately comment on what may have occurred in the truce village Saturday that triggered the North’s comments. Sunday, the North rejected a call for a meeting of the commission overseeing the truce and demanded direct military talks with the South to discuss the sinking of the South Korean navy corvette in which 46 sailors died. A delegation from the U.S.-led U.N. Command is probing whether North Korea violated the armistice by sinking the Cheonan, a probe the
North has denounced as a sham. North Korea said, not for the first time, that it faced a U.S. administration bent on imposing a nuclear threat and that it had no choice but to bolster its own nuclear deterrent. “Historical facts prove that the DPRK was quite right when it made a decision to react to nukes with a nuclear deterrent,” KCNA said, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. “The recent disturbing development on the Korean peninsula underscores the need for the DPRK to bolster its nuclear deterrent in a newly developed way to cope with the U.S. persistent hostile policy toward the DPRK and military threat toward it.”

Police arrest more than 600 at Toronto summit TORONTO – Police raided a university building and rounded up hundreds of protesters Sunday in an effort to quell further violence near the G-20 global economic summit site a day after blackclad youths rampaged through the city, smashing windows and torching police cars. The violence shocked Canada, where civil unrest is almost unknown. Toronto police Sunday said they had never before used tear gas until Saturday’s clashes with antiGlobalization activists. Police said they have arrested more than 600 demonstrators, many of whom were hauled away in plastic handcuffs and taken to a temporary holding center constructed for the summit. Police adopted a more aggressive strategy Sunday by going into the crowd to make arrests, compared to the previous day when they stood back as protesters torched four police cars and broke store windows. No serious injuries were reported among police, protesters or bystanders, Toronto Police Constable Tony Vella said Sunday. Thousands of police officers in riot gear formed cordons to prevent radical anti-globalization demonstrations from breaching the steel and concrete security fence surrounding the Group of 20 summit site. Security was being provided by an estimated 19,000 law enforcement officers drawn from across Canada. Security costs for the G-20 in Toronto and the Group of Eight summit that ended Saturday in Huntsville, 140 miles (225 kilometers) away, were estimated at more than US$900 million. Prime Minister Stephen Harper deplored the actions of a “few thugs” and suggested the violence justified the controversial cost. “I think it goes a long way to explaining why we have the kind of security costs around these summits that we do,” he said. The disorder and vandalism occurred just blocks from where U.S.
President Barack Obama and other world leaders were meeting and staying. On Sunday, protesters gathered at a park near the detention center — about 2 1/2 miles (four kilometers) east of where the leaders were meeting. Plainclothes police jumped out of an unmarked van, grabbed a protester off the street and whisked him away in the vehicle. The protest was then quickly broken up by riot police, who set off a device that created a cloud of smoke that sent protesters running down the street. Vella said it was not tear gas. Bridie Wyrock, 20, from Cleveland, Ohio, said she was arrested for public mischief for sitting on a street in the financial district. Wyrock, held for 19 hours before being released, said there weren’t enough toilets and said some people resisted detention, but said police treated most people with respect. “They put us in cages, blocked off on all three sides,” Wyrock said. “It was cold and dirty.” An anti-poverty group called The Global Call to Action Against Poverty criticized the protesters who committed violence. “A bunch of pimply faced teenagers trashing shops and burning cars does not help anyone,” said Rajesh Latchman of GCAP South Africa. “These hooligans obscure the real issues.” Previous global summit protests have turned violent. In 1999, 50,000 protesters shut down World Trade Organization sessions in Seattle as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets. There were some 600 arrests and $3 million in property damage. One man died after clashes with police at a G-20 meeting held in London in April 2009.

At the same time, the statement called for following through on “existing stimulus plans,” heeding Obama’s concerns. JAKARTA - An Indonesian court on Monday cleared a Saudi man of financing twin suicide attacks on luxury hotels in Jakarta last year that killed seven people. Al Khelaiw Ali Abdullah, 54, was convicted only of immigration offences and sentenced to 18 months in jail, chief judge Ida Bagus Dwiyantara told the South Jakarta
district court. The judges dismissed the prosecution case that Abdullah had channelled funds to Islamists led by terror leader Noordin Mohammed Top, who was killed by police two months after the July attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels. He had given money to key Noordin accomplice Syaifudin Jaelani ahead of the attacks, but there was no evidence that the Saudi knew
of Jaelani’s terrorist activities. Police killed Jaelani in October. Abdullah has maintained his innocence, saying he had merely lent money to associates in a planned business enterprise. After the verdict was read out, Abdullah shook hands with the judges, prostrated himself in the courtroom and said “Praise to God!” “I thank the court for viewing this matter in a clear and fair manner. I am happy,” he said.
President Obama renews commitment to visiting Indonesia Antara
TORONTO - US President Barack Obama has renewed his commitment to visiting Indonesia after postponing twice due to domestic issues that he had to deal with. Obama renewed his commitment to his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at a joint breakfast gathering at Metro Toronto Convention Center (MTCC), Toronto, on Sunday morning. Greeting “selamat pagi” (good morning) to President Yudhoyono, Obama expressed that the Indonesian leader was an important and influential figure in efforts to overcome the climate change. The US president then admitted that he had twice postponed his Indonesian trip, and promised to visit
the country where he had spent his childhood. But he made no mention of specific a date for his visit to Indonesia. In the meeting with Obama, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Radjasa, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa, and presidential special staff for foreign affairs Dino Pati Djalal. Earlier on Saturday the Indonesian head of state met with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende at Toronto Westin Hotel. During the meeting President Yudhoyono expressed Indonesia’s desire to increase bilateral ties with the Netherlands. The head of state also said that during his trip to Toronto, he and his entourage made a stop over in Amsterdam.
Yudhoyono said that he was happy with the developments taking place in the Netherlands. In the meantime, the Dutch prime minister said he was happy with his meeting with Yudhoyono, and agreed to step up the relations between the two nations. Earlier, President Yudhoyono led the Indonesian delegation in a meeting with the Australian delegation which was led by Australian Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan. Initially, Yudhoyono was scheduled to meet with Kevin Rudd, but Rudd had resigned that changed the Australian government. The head of state was in Toronto to attend the G20 summit on June 26 and 27, 2010. Yudhoyono’s visit to Toronto is part of his 11 day tour of three countries taking him to Canada, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
Tempo magazine said on its website that mysterious buyers who looked like police were snapping up its June 28 edition — which has a cover story on police officers’ “fat bank accounts” — directly from distributors. “One of Tempo’s main distributors in East Jakarta who ordered 700 copies said today the magazines have been entirely bought by non-uniformed police personnel at dawn before any of the copies went to paper booths,” it said.
“Copies for retail sales have vanished and many major distributors have complained.” One officer reportedly had some 10 million dollars in a bank account. Indonesia’s police force is seen as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country, which is ranked among the most corrupt in the world according to watchdog Transparency International. Tempo quoted a police spokesman as denying any knowledge of police involvement in bulk purchases of this week’s edition.

SAMPIT - A girl was found dead in a riverside nearby her house with injuries on her body which may have been caused by crocodile bites. According to Erawan, the chief of Bagendang Hilir hamlet, North Mentaya Hilir sub-district, Central Kalimantan, the victim, Juwaryah, was found dead about 500 meters from where she was bitten. The incident started when the 19 years old girl was doing her laundry on the riverbank where people believe crocodiles are still spawn-
ing around the river. Erawan said that Juwaryah’s body was found with serious injuries on her hands and forehead under a riverbank house on the next day. Juwaryah has been reported missing by her family which prompted the other residents to start looking for her. Erawan said that before she went missing, a rumbling sound was heard after Juwarsyah’s scream from the river. The residents also said the noise they heard from the river was that of a crocodile, Erawan said.

DENPASAR – Bali’s Governor, Made Mangku Pastika told all groceries stores and sellers in Bali to avoid in using plastic bag to wrap their goods. “The plastics bags should be replaced by papers or leaves in order to preserve the cleanliness and the environment in Bali,” he added. The governor also gives another suggestion where the people who wanted to go shopping can prepare their own bags. That way, the people doesn’t have to use plastic bags. The plastic is very difficult to be dissolved, it usually takes more than 1,000 years and it could create pollution. Bali as the tourism destination should be able to create the green island which was already established last March. The act is needed the support of all people in Bali because cleanliness is one of the main thing complained by the tourists. “In the future, garbage handling management will give high income and can create cleanliness in Bali,” the governor said. The garbage volume in Bali is 5,094 meter cube and now the government will built several small garbage handling factories in Besakih temple in Karangasem, Goa Lawah in Klungkung, and Batur Temple in Kintamani. DENPASAR – Bali still face challenges and obstacles in creating the Bali Clean and Green, the program established by the government in March 2010. Ketut Gede Dharma Putra, environment expert from Udayana University, said that the obstacle is in the area of forest in Bali. The forest area in Bali is not adequate with the need of the island. Dharma Putra said that the number of critical land in Bali is increasing every year because of the natural cause or human act. Five from the eight regencies in Bali have large area of critical land which is in Buleleng, Karangasem, Bangli, Jembrana, and Klungkung. The clean water availability is decreasing every year because the source is reducing in quantity
and quality. This condition is also because the over use of the water in Bali. The worst condition can be seen in Sanur area where the intrusion on the sea water is increasingly dangerous. Rivers in Bali are also polluted with chemical and garbage. Dharma Putra said the condition of the water in the rivers is way over the health limit, especially in terms of the heavy metals. It is also because the rapid development of the cities especially in Badung and Denpasar so the garbage production is also increasing rapidly. The people also have very low awareness to preserve the cleanliness. The governor himself didn’t determine the deadline when the Bali Clean and Green must be accomplished by Bali but it must be done as soon as possible.

G20 agrees measures to boost recovery Agence France-Presse
TORONTO - In a bid to keep the global recovery on track G20 leaders agreed to slash deficits and pursue “growth friendly policies,” according to a joint statement Sunday. Amid a transatlantic spat over whether the G20’s priority should be to cut debt or keep short-term spending to fuel demand, leaders tried to reach a deal which emphasized both. Describing the need to strengthen and safeguard the global recovery as the Group of 20’s “highest priority,” leaders agreed a rare concrete target to halve the budget deficits of richer members within two years. “Advanced economies have committed to fiscal plans that will at least halve deficits by 2013 and stabilize or reduce government debt-to-GDP ratios by 2016,” a joint statement said. In a bid to fuel economic growth outside the United States, the G20 also stressed the need to rebalance global demand. Amid US fears that global
growth may once again become over-dependent on American consumers, the G20 called for “efforts to rebalance global demand to help ensure global growth continues on a sustainable path.” As part of that recalibration the G20 urged “some” emerging countries to let their currencies float more freely, a move that proponents say will make global trade fairer and boost domestic demand, particularly in China. But a final statement shied away from naming China specifically. The host, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, indicated that Beijing had asked not to be singled out. Despite pressure from European countries, the G20 shied away from a global levy on banks Sunday allowing each country to choose whether to impose the levy.

Chiang Pin-kung was greeted by a sizeable delegation of Chinese officials as he arrived in Chongqing, the municipality in southwest China where he will sign the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) on Tuesday. “The signing of ECFA will usher in a new era of mutual trust and negotiation for the two sides,” said Chiang, who heads Taiwan’s quasi-official Straits Exchange
Foundation. Chen Yunlin, Chiang’s Chinese counterpart, described the agreement as the culmination of a rapprochement set in motion in 2008, when the Beijing-friendly Ma Ying-jeou became president of self-ruled Taiwan. “The fact that we can reach so many agreements in such a short period of time shows our efforts represent the interests on both sides,” said Chen, head of the semi-official Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits. Taiwan and China have signed 12 agreements since 2008 on matters such as financial cooperation, but ECFA is seen as a much more critical step forward in the normalisation of economic ties between Taiwan and the mainland.
It will lead to preferential tariffs for more than 500 Taiwanese product categories in areas stretching from petrochemicals to textiles, while applying to about half as many Chinese items. ‘Toy Story 3,’ Sandler are hot, Tom Cruise not Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – The “Toy Story 3” gang and Adam Sandler are finding plenty of playmates at movie theaters. Tom Cruise is not so popular, though. The Disney-Pixar Animation smash “Toy Story 3” remained the No. 1 film with $59 million in its second weekend, raising its domestic total to $226.6 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Sandler’s “Grown Ups” debuted at No. 2 with a healthy $41 million. Released by Sony, the comedy costarring Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider did well despite a thrashing from critics. Cruise’s thriller “Knight and Day” fizzled at No. 3 with $20.5 million. It was the worst result for a Cruise action flick in 20 years and a sign that audiences still have not forgiven him for erratic behavior a few years back, which included his couch-jumping incident on Oprah Winfrey’s show. “He’s one of the biggest stars of all time, but no question, this has impacted him,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “It’s not like it’s irrevocable or unchangeable. Look at all the stars who have been jailed or caught in compromising sexual situations and then came back. Many stars do recover. It just may take a lot of time for him.” Reviews were fair for “Knight and Day,” which features Cruise as a charming spy who finds romance with a civilian (Cameron Diaz) on a globetrotting adventure. The awards show was aired live from the Las Vegas Hilton. West beckoned her sobbing daughter onstage to bask in the award. Park said he may give his trophy to his grandmother, who has been watching “As the World Turns” for more than a half-century on CBS. He said he hoped no one would have to endure the sadness felt by the cast and crew when the show stopped filming on Wednesday. Borneo’s crocodiles ‘no longer endangered’ Agence France Presse
KUALA LUMPUR – Wildlife officials in Malaysian Borneo are pushing to have its saltwater crocodiles removed from a list of endangered animals, saying the reptile’s numbers have strongly recovered in recent years. Deputy director of the Sabah Wildlife Department Augustin Tuuga told AFP that a survey of the Crocodylus porosus population showed there were about 11,000 to 15,000 in the state compared to 1,000 to 5,000 two decades ago. “We are pushing to have the crocodile downgraded from the ‘endangered’ to the ‘not necessarily threatened’ list on the Convention of International Trade of Species (CITES),” he said. HONG KONG – Democracy activists are not the only ones unhappy with a slow pace of electoral reform in Hong Kong. Environmentalists blame the city’s political setup — which guarantees a strong voice for business — for stymieing efforts to clean up Hong Kong’s increasingly dirty air. “The city’s dysfunctional political system is holding back environmental reform,” said Joanne Ooi, head of the Clean Air Network. China has allowed limited democracy in the territory of 7 million people since taking control of the former British colony in 1997. Voters elect only half of the 60-member legislature. The other half is selected by various interest groups that tend to be pro-Beijing — mostly industries and professions such as lawyers and doctors. The legislature agreed this week to add 10 elected seats for the next election in 2012, increasing the body’s size to 70. It also expanded the selection committee for Hong Kong’s leader to 1,200 people. Democracy activists criticized the moves as too incremental, and the changes aren’t expected to tip the balance on environmental issues either. Hong Kong has large green areas: 40 percent of its roughly 400 square miles (1,000 square kilometers) is reserved for nature conservation, recreation, outdoor education and ecotourism. However, most residents live and work in the less than 25 percent of the land that is developed, where traffic is dense and the air quality — by at least one measure — is getting worse. about 110 micrograms per cubic meter of air, nearly triple the World Health Organization target of 40 for the lung-damaging pollutant. “The air is terrible,” said 32-year-old office worker Karen Wong, one hand covering her mouth and nose as she walked down Nathan Road, a main thoroughfare. “The fumes really get to me. My throat gets irritated when I step outside.” Hong Kong officials have long blamed factories in mainland China for the dirty air, but environmentalists say much of the problem lies at home. Argentina beats Mexico 3-1 at World Cup Associated Press Writer
JOHANNESBURG – Argentina needed a couple of breaks in its second round World Cup match. It got one from the referee and another from Mexico. Carlos Tevez scored twice — once on a disputed goal — and Gonzalo Higuain added another as the Albiceleste beat Mexico 3-1 on Sunday to move into the quarterfinals. “We’re not here on vacation, we came here to leave everything so that the Argentines can be proud of us,” coach Diego Maradona said. With Mexico getting the best scoring chances early on, Tevez headed in a pass from Lionel Messi in the 26th minute from close in. One problem: He was clearly offside. Referee Roberto Rosetti of Italy awarded the goal after consulting with his linesman, the pair surrounded by angrily gesturing Mexican and Argentine players. Then in the 33rd minute, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after Mexico’s Ricardo Osorio, under no pressure, played the ball straight into his path. In the 52nd Tevez blasted in one of the tournament’s best goal, an unstoppable shot from 25 yards. “Two mistakes ... drastically changed the course of the game,” Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said. “There was a before and after.” The call on Tevez’s first goal came
just hours after the referee at Germany’s 4-1 win over England failed to recognize that a shot by England’s Frank Lampard, which would have tied the score at 2-2 late in the first half, clearly made it across the goal line after striking the crossbar. Argentina, which also beat Mexico in round of 16 four years ago now plays Germany in the quarterfinals. That’s a rematch, too — a repeat of the 2006 quarterfinals, which the Germans won. That ruled the man known by some as ‘Red Card Larrionda’ out of officiating at the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea. The 42-year-old has also incurred the wrath of the United States side twice, most notably in the 2006 World Cup when, in a group match with eventual champions Italy, he red-carded three players - two of them American. Serbian coach Radomir Antic is no fan of his either having been outraged after Larrionda turned down appeals for a penalty for handball against Tim Cahill in their concluding group match against Australia last Wednesday. Had it been given, and Serbia scored, they and not Ghana would have progressed to the last 16 and a clash with the United States. “The referee did not want to see it,” said Antic afterwards. “We did not get fair treatment.”

JOHANNESBURG – A goal that probably shouldn’t have counted and one that definitely should have but was ignored played key roles in Argentina and Germany advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals. Not that the two soccer powers wouldn’t have moved on, anyway. But what happened Sunday sure didn’t hurt them. Germany got by England 4-1 in a match affected by a bad officiating decision. Frank Lampard’s long-range shot rebounded off the crossbar and clearly crossed the goal line. Referee Jorge Larrionda waved play on rather than signal the match was tied 2-2. “It’s incredible,” England coach Fabio Capello said. “We played with five referees and they can’t decide if it’s a goal or no goal. The game was ... different after this goal. It was the mistake of the linesman and I think the referee because from the bench I saw the ball go over the (line).” Even Germany coach Joachim Loew conceded it was a fair goal. “What I saw on the television, this ball was behind the line,” Loew said. “It must have been given as goal.” It wasn’t. Carlos Tevez scored twice, one goal when he was about a yard offside, in Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Mexico in Johannesburg. Tevez opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading into an empty net after Lionel Messi chipped the ball toward goal. Phil Jackson: Karl’s illness to influence return Associated Press Writer
WHITEFISH, Mont. – Seeing Denver Nuggets coach George Karl sidelined last season with cancer will influence Phil Jackson’s upcoming decision on whether to return as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the legendary coach said at a meeting of Western governors on Sunday. Jackson told reporters after his speech to the Western Governors’ Association that he’s waiting to hear from doctors on whether he’s healthy enough to make it through another 82-game regular season. The 64-year-old said he wouldn’t want to leave his squad without a coach in the middle of the season, as Karl was forced to do earlier this year while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for throat and neck cancer. “My concern to be quite blunt, is I don’t want to happen what happened to Denver and George Karl,” Jackson said. Jackson has two replaced hips, a sore knee requiring a brace under his suit during the season and a previous heart problem. He’s one of the most successful
coaches in league history with a .705 regular-season winning percentage, a record 225 postseason victories and two more titles than Boston’s Red Auerbach. His Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA finals last week to claim their second straight title, and Jackson sounds increasingly interested in going out on top. But he told the governors that his 13 total championships — two as a player — seems like an odd figure. “Which is a hard number to stop at if you think about it,” he said to enthusiastic applause. Jackson said he will be largely out of touch during his customary twomonth vacation at his lakeside home near Glacier National Park, close to where he spent a good part of his childhood. His altercation with the crowd may have been provoked by apparent heckling from spectators. However, a Wimbledon spokesman said it was not thought that Hanescu’s spitting and the arrests were directly related, with those apprehended being in a different part of the court. “Someone has said something to him in the fifth set,” the spokesman told AFP. “He’s taken against it. He moves in their direction and spits in their direction. He then goes back to carry on serving, then swears in their direction. “At that stage the umpire gives him a code violation for unsportsmanlike behaviour.” Hanescu appeared to deliberately foot-fault and double-fault, losing the game to go 3-0 down. He then withdrew, officially due to a hamstring injury. Hanescu was struggling with problem during the latter part of the match and received on-court treatment. He offered his hand to umpire Kim Craven, but no handshake took place as Craven discussed what was happening with Hanescu. The Romanian, who is not playing in the doubles competitions, left the championships shortly afterwards.

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa – A disappointingly low turnout for Saturday’s World Cup second round clash between Uruguay and South Korea has been partly blamed on unsold tickets and no shows. Uruguay’s 2-1 win over South Korea was played out at a Nelson Mandela Bay stadium which had over 12,000 of its 42,000 seats unoccupied. The official crowd figure of 30,597 was the smallest for any of the six World Cup matches staged at the venue which was built at a cost of 2.1 billion Rand (270 million US dollars). The opening game, South Korea’s first visit when they beat Greece 2-0, also failed to fill the rafters, with only 31,513 turning up. By contrast the highest crowd of 38,294, was recorded for Germany’s 1-0 loss to Serbia. FIFA say that 5,000 tickets for Saturday’s last 16 clash had gone unsold, while a further 1,500 ticket holders failed to attend. Municipal 2010 director Errol Heynes, in an interview on Monday with The Herald newspaper, also put the low attendance down to the fixture’s lack of ‘star’ appeal. “It was a bit unfortunate as the teams are not popular locally,” he told the paper. FIFA media officer Wolfgang Eichler said that some ticket holders had failed to turn up due to poor ticket distribution and transport problems. Hopes are high of a bumper crowd for Friday’s seventh game at Port Elizabeth, a quarter-final which could feature Brazil. Heynes suggested this sleepy Eastern Cape port city had struggled to attract fans due to its position living in the shadow of the far more popular tourist destination of Cape Town up the coast. He said: “We have got to market ourselves vigorously so that we can be recognised like cities like Cape Town. Strong marketing campaigns are needed. “This World Cup should serve as a catalyst for the international community to see what the Bay looks like, in order to get an influx of visitors.”

Vettel victorious in Valencia Sebastian Vettel was able to cruise to victory around the circuit surrounding Valencia’s Americas Cup harbour after his main opposition took themselves out of the European Grand Prix fight. The German, having qualified on pole position somewhat against expectation, out-dragged Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber at the start and then survived an opportunistic lunge from Lewis Hamilton at turn two, after the Briton had made the most of a lightning start to also see off Webber into the opening corner. By lap ten, however, both challengers had made mistakes that would hand an easy win to Vettel. Having rebuffed Hamilton’s move, closing the McLaren off and making light contact at the apex of the second turn, Vettel was able to ease away from the 2008 world champion who, in turn, complained of a vibration resulting from ‘being hit’. The McLaren’s front wing was indeed damaged after rubbing on Vettel’s right rear, but Hamilton could not afford to stop and change it with the pack in close attendance. Webber, meanwhile, was already suffering from a mistake in the early stages for, having allowed Hamilton to sneak up his inside into turn one, he found himself offline and being muscled aside by both Ferraris before turn two. Having fallen into the clutches of Jenson Button, a touch between the pair then saw Webber fall further, and he ended the lap ninth, having also fallen behind the two Williams drivers. With little to lose, Webber became the first driver to stop for fresh tyres - Lotus’ Jarno Trulli had pit-
ted on lap one after contact in the pack - and emerged well down the order after his left front again proved reluctant to depart the car. As Nico Rosberg pitted next time around, however, Webber’s race came to a violent end, the Red Bull cartwheeling over the back of the other Lotus, in the hands of Heikki Kovalainen, after a misunderstanding while battling for position. Although the Finn admitted to defending his place - a futile exercise given the performance difference between Lotus and Red Bull - Webber, looking to gain as much of a tow as possible, did not appear to give enough room when finally ducking out to pass.
