Most of the House members think that the slow train is not relevant with current condition in Bali especially the topographic of Bali. The House urged the government to optimize the public transport called sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan) which had been planed for several years.

Falling from second floor when fixing roof Because of leaky roof, Made Sumbadiana, 45, a resident of Jalan Buana Kubu should be treated in Sanglah Hospital last Monday (Apr 26). Sumbadiana fell from the second floor of his house while trying to fix a leaky roof. According to his son, when Sumbadiana was climbing onto the roof he did not know if the footing was fragile. Therefore, when he set foot on the roof, the roof perforated so that Made fell from the second floor to the basement. As a result, Made suffered from a torn wound and fracture on both legs. Similarly, last Monday (Apr 26) the Sanglah Hospital received a victim of electric shock named Sukardi, 40. According to his friend, at the time of accident

Sukardi was at work renovating one of the banks located at Kuta Roundabout. “He was banging on the wall using a hammer. He did not know if there are electrical wires behind the wall,” said Sukardi’s co-worker met in Sanglah Hospital, last Monday (Apr 26). As a result, the hammer used to hit the wall afflicted a cable network and it channeled the electrical power into the hands of Sukardi. Due to such electrical shock, both hand of Sukardi blistered of burns. Moreover, because at that time he was on the first floor of the bank, Sukardi fell and injured on his right cheek after touching the floor. Police finally managed to capture the motorcycle theft disturbing the Tabanan residents. Two members of the ring were arrested last Sunday (Apr 25) on account of the help of residents. Spokesperson of Tabanan Police, Endung Hardanto, accompanied by Chief of Kediri Police Luh Kompyang Srinadi last Monday (Apr 26) said the ring had been arrested. Both suspects were Iman Budi Setiawan, 29, from Banyuwangi having the address on Jalan Gunung Guntur, behind the Headquarters of Denpasar Metro Police and Mochamad Imam Saifullah, 24, from Banyuwangi with the address on Jalan Bung Tomo IX/1 Denpasar. Srinadi said the arrest of the ring originated in the existence of suspicion of Pasti Hamlet residents, Pandak Gede, Kediri against Budi at the hamlet. Budi originally admitted

as a scavenger who would like to meet his friend. Being suspicious, local residents eventually secured him and contacted police officer. KIEV, Ukraine – As protesters threw eggs and set off smoke bombs, Ukraine’s parliament on Tuesday extended the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s lease at a Crimean port for another 25 years. Russia’s parliament ratified the deal in a more sedate session. The agreement, reached last week by the two country’s presidents in a clear sign of Russia’s renewed influence in Ukraine, extends the fleet’s lease by 25 years after the old lease expires in 2017. Former President Viktor Yushchenko adamantly tried to move Ukraine out of Moscow’s shadow and closer to Western Europe during his five years in office. But his successor, Viktor Yanukovych, who took office in February, is more favorably inclined toward the Kremlin. The extension outraged Ukrainian nationalists who regard the fleet’s presence as tantamount to Russian occupation.

“This is a permanent threat to Ukraine’s territorial integrity because the Black Sea Fleet is the outpost of the Russian state in Ukraine, which is conducting anti-Ukrainian policies and financing anti-Ukrainian projects. BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan – The ousted president of Kyrgyzstan has been charged with organizing mass killings in the deadly uprising that forced him from office in this Central Asian country earlier this month, the leader of the interim authorities said Tuesday. Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who is in exile in Belarus, will have his presidential immunity stripped to face the Kyrgyz charges, which also include abuse of power, said Azimbek Beknazarov, a vice-premier of the opposition forces that claimed provisional control of the country. Bakiyev fled the capital on April 7 after security forces fired on protesters and the demonstrators stormed government buildings. At least 85 people died in the violence.

He tried to rally support in his home region in Kyrgyzstan’s south, but eventually fled the country and surfaced last week in Belarus. Beknazarov said Belarus is obliged to extradite Bakiyev under an agreement among former Soviet countries. There was no immediate reaction from Belarus, whose authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, has criticized the demonstrations that drove out Bakiyev. Bakiyev insists he is still

WASHINGTON – A video has surfaced showing accused Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab training with al-Qaida in Yemen. The video, obtained and broadcast Monday by “ABC World News,” shows the 23-year-old Nigerian firing weapons and speaking in Arabic about his impending attack. He is shown reading from the Quran and saying, “God said those who punish you must be punished.” A U.S. intelligence official said Monday that the preliminary judgment is that it is Abdulmutallab in the video and the footage is consistent with the understanding that he was in training. It is not clear where and when the video

was made. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. According to ABC News, the video was produced by al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP. Abdulmutallab and others are shows firing at targets, including a Jewish star and one labeled “UN.” Abdulmutallab is accused of trying to use a bomb hidden in his underwear to bring down a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day. The explosives failed, though they burned Abdulmutallab, who was arrested. Venzke said in an e-mail. “Today’s release firmly ties al-Awlaki to AQAP.”

HONG KONG – In their largest haul ever, police in Hong Kong have seized 820 pounds (372 kilograms) of cocaine from a suburban house that was reportedly part of a botched drug shipment sent to the southern Chinese territory by mistake. Officers discovered the stash — which has a street value of 337 million Hong Kong dollars ($43.4 million) — while investigating a missing person report in the suburban Fanling district on Sunday, Hong Kong police said in a statement. The cocaine was stored in 26 boxes on the roof of the three-story village house, the South China Morning Post reported Tuesday. The huge stash was the subject of negotiations between the missing person — suspected Dutch-Chinese dealer Chang Ma-ki — and Hong Kong dealers after it was mistakenly shipped to the territory, the Post reported, citing

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has invited Finnish investors to participate in a number of development programs in Indonesia. “We invite Finnish investors to invest in Indonesia,” President Yudhoyono said in a joint press conference with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, at Merdeka Palace here Tuesday. The head of state hoped that investments from Finland would increase significantly. “Indonesia offers a more attractive chance,” he said. He said Indonesia was one of few countries which enjoyed positive economic growth during the global economic crisis with economic growth at 4.5 percent. Meanwhile, Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen said he was accompanied by a number of business-

men during his three-day visit in Indonesia. The Finnish government always encouraged the country’s businessmen to invest in Asia, he said. Minister inaugurates first anti-corruption court prison Antara

JAKARTA - Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar inaugurated the country’s first AntiCorruption Court (Tipikor) detention center here Tuesday. The new first-class penitentiary especially for Tipikor prisoners was expected to help solve the overcrowding problem at prisons in Indonesia, the minister said. Purwo Ardoko, architect of the

special prison, said the detention center was built in accordance with United Nations standards. The building consists of 64 units and can accommodate 256 prisoners. The three-story building has 16 rooms on its first floor where prisoners who are advanced in age or ill can stay alone in one room measuring 3x5 meters. The second and third floors each have 12 7X5-meter rooms with one room intended to accommodate five

people. The new penitentiary also has such facilities as a place for worship, a reading room, sports court and a television room. Its walls are 20 centimeters thick, and its iron bars have a diameter of 22 millimeters. The distance between one guard post and another is around 10 meters. Ardoko, as the architect of several prisons, has done comparative studies in China, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand.

JAKARTA - Vice President Boediono has received a summons from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to give clarifications on the Bank Century case. “The summons arrived on Monday afternoon (April 26),” Yopie Hidayat, the vice president’s spokesman, said here on Tuesday. Boediono, former governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), would not be investigated, but be asked to clarify his role in the Bank Century case as the then governor of the country’s central bank, Hidayat said. The Vice President and KPK were still coordinating on the mechanism, procedure and the venue of the planned meeting. “We cannot confirm the date and venue for Boediono to give the clarifications to the KPK. Greenpeace accuses Sinar Mas of destroying rainforests Antara

JAKARTA - Greenpeace has released fresh evidence showing how Sinar Mas continues to destroy Indonesia’s rain forests despite promises to stop, the international environmental NGO, said in a statement from Singapore, Tuesday. The statement was issued when shareholders of Golden Agri Resources (GAR), the palm oil arm of Sinar Mas, was holding an annual general meeting. “Deforestation for palm oil expansion is driving climate change and pushing endangered orangutans to the brink of extinction,” Greenpeace said. “This evidence shows that Sinar Mas continues to lie to its shareholders and customers about its environmental standards. Whatever new promises it makes today, it is clear the company intends to continue trashing rainforests and destroying orang-utan habitats. We will continue to press Sinar Mas’ customers to stop all business with this forest destroyer until it cleans up its act,” said Bustar Maitar, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Forest Team Leader. A policy statement released by Sinar Mas in early February and the GAR 2009 Annual Report presented on Tuesday at its AGM claims commitments to the principles of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and a halt to clearing in High Conservation Value (HCV) areas, primary forests and peatlands. “Two weeks ago we revealed how Sinar Mas subsidiary PT ALM

is currently destroying deep peatland and high conservation value forest in West Kalimantan. This is just the tip of the iceberg. This past weekend we caught Sinar Mas subsidiary PT BAT clearing rainforest bordering orangutan habitat in Central Kalimantan. These cases show that Sinar Mas’ commitments are meaningless and nothing but greenwash,” the NGO activist said. Greenpeace has also been targeting food and drink giant, Nestle, for using palm oil from Sinar Mas in products like KitKat. The multinational terminated its direct palm oil contract with the company last month, but continues to buy palm oil and paper products indirectly from it, through suppliers like Cargill. Nestle has said it expects Cargill to stop supplying Sinar Mas palm oil unless the company adequately answers to Greenpeace’s evidence of deforestation and illegality by the end of April. “Sinar Mas has just days left to clean up its act or risk losing huge contracts with Cargill,” said Maitar. “Greenpeace is not against the palm oil plantation; our campaign is to stop companies like Sinar Mas from destroying the world’s remaining rainforests. Indonesia is a country that has the world’s largest geothermal sources comprising around 40 percent of the world’s reserve while the use of the energy in the country is still low or below five percent. Indonesia and Iceland realized cooperation in the field by signing a memorandum of understanding in 2007. As an initial stage Reykjavik Energy Invest (REI) cooperated with PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) in the development of a 200MW geothermal power plant. Pertamina also sent 24 employees to Iceland to study geothermal energy there. Apart from discussing geothermal energy President Yudhoyono and President Olafur also discussed fishery. “Around 70 percent of Iceland’s economic activities are fishery-based while Indonesia is a maritime country,” he said. So, the two had shared their countries’ experience in fishery, he said. President Olafur, his wife and delegation stayed in Indonesia for five days for the World Geothermal Congress.

DENPASAR - Indonesia has detained 28 “beach boys” accused of selling sex to female tourists on Bali after a documentary on the resort’s “gigolos” hit the Internet, an official said Tuesday. The round-up of Bali’s so-called “cowboys” began as tourism officials fretted over the impact of the film on the holiday island’s image as a family destination. “We’ve rounded up 28 men we suspect might be gigolos. WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama Monday announced a string of new educational and entrepreneurial exchanges with Muslim nations, in a bid to honor his promise to forge a new beginning with Islam. Obama delivered a keynote speech at the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, hosted by the United States after being announced in his landmark speech to the Muslim world in Egypt last June. He also thanked Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for offering to host the next such summit in his country next year. “By listening to each other we have been able to partner with each other,” Obama said, announcing that a new US Global Technology and Innovation fund could “potentially mobilize” two billion dollars of private investment. “Real change comes from the bottom up, and that is why we are here,” Obama said, comparing the task of fostering innovation and development in Muslim nations to his time as a community organizer in Chicago. Obama unveiled a series of new partnerships and ventures designed to bring business and social entrepreneurs from Muslim majority nations to the United States and to

send US counterparts to the Islamic world. “Women in technology fields will have opportunity to come to the United States for internships and professional development,” Obama said. “Since innovation is central to entrepreneurship, we are creating new exchanges for science teachers, we are forging new partnerships in which high-tech leaders from Silicon Valley will share their expertise.” Around 250 entrepreneurs are attending the summit from countries across the Muslim world, where America’s image has suffered over wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal and the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The Global Technology and Innovation Fund is backed by the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation, which has received a deluge of applications for funding. Each chunk of funding awarded by OPIC is expected to be worth between 25 and 150 million dollars.

SINGAPORE - Singapore throws open the doors of its second casino Tuesday as part of a 5.5 billion US dollar complex built by US gaming giant Las Vegas Sands. Marina Bay Sands, located next to the financial district, will open at the locally auspicious time of 3:18 pm (0718 GMT). The number eight sounds like the word for prosperity in Chinese. Singapore gave the green light for casino gambling in 2005, setting off a flurry of construction that went ahead despite the city-state slipping into recession in 2008 because of the global financial crisis. Its first casino, the 4.4 billion US-dollar Resorts World Sentosa, opened for business on February 14. Marina Bay Sands was originally set to open at the end of 2009 but faced repeated delays caused by a number of factors, including material and labour shortages and financial problems due to the latest global economic downturn.

Tuesday’s opening includes the casino and 963 out of 2,560 hotel rooms, a portion of the shopping mall, some restaurants, an exhibition centre and the events plaza. The remaining hotel rooms and suites, a skypark and more shops will open on June 23, while a museum, theatres and other stores will start operations later in the year, the management said. Officials hope the casinos will help Singapore achieve a target of attracting 17 million visitors a year generating over 21 billion US dollars by 2015, boosting the services sector and reducing the role of manufacturing in the economy. Marina Bay Sands is designed to cater to the corporate and convention crowd while Resorts World is aimed at families. Built by Malaysia’s Genting Group, the Resorts World complex includes Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios movie theme park, hotels, restaurants and convention facilities. Las Vegas Sands also has major operations in the Asian gaming haven of Macau.

He says he fully expects not just an Emmy nomination in the reality competition category (which would be the series’ third, the first two being for non-celebrity cycles)

SAN FRANCISCO – Riffling through old maps while researching a history project for San Francisco public schools, landscape architect Bonnie Sherk made a discovery: a century ago a creek coursed where two school campuses stand today. “There was Islais Creek, running where Balboa High School is now,” said Sherk. “All of a sudden it made sense: the school’s cafeteria had been flooding and the basements of homes in this neighborhood flood during heavy rains because they’re in this large watershed.” Two wells have been drilled on the school campuses since Sherk’s discovery a decade ago, tapping the hidden creek’s water to irrigate community gardens, parks and street vegetation, while hopefully reducing the threat of floods. Now, as part of an estimated $4 billion sewer upgrade, Islais Creek and other streams that last saw daylight more than a century ago could flow openly once again through neighborhoods of one of the country’s most densely built cities. Such “daylighting” of urban creeks is being embraced in cities throughout the world. Seattle, Portland, Ore., Yonkers, N.Y., Providence, R.I., as well as Zurich are among many places reopening long hidden waterways. Resurrecting old creeks can help remove hundreds of millions of gallons of storm water from sewer systems each year — meaning fewer sewage spills and cleaner water. Covered up during and after the Gold Rush when the city’s booming population created demand for housing, San Francisco’s many creeks were diverted and sent underground into the sewer system — parts of it still utilizing 1850s-era brick pipes. The water is mixed with the waste and sent to a treatment plant before being expelled into San Francisco Bay or the Pacific Ocean. Each year, these rain-swollen creeks often over-

load the system — and about a dozen times a year raw or partially treated sewage spews into the bay and sea. Currently, Islais Creek, once the city’s largest, can only be seen in a park in the southern part of the city, where it flows into concrete sewer pipes. The only place people can catch a glimpse of Mission Creek is in the basement of the San Francisco National Guard Armory and Arsenal building, a massive brick structure not open to the public and currently owned by a pornography film company. “We want to partially restore the natural hydrology of San Francisco,” said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for San Francisco’s Public Utilities Commission, the agency in charge of the project. “It helps the sewer system by reducing flow, beautifies neighborhoods and can bring back natural wildlife that may once have lived in an area.” San Francisco is studying the best sites for unearthing these historic creeks, and officials say the first phase of projects would likely start in five to 10 years. Still, regulators say with proper monitoring and natural filters, opening the creeks can actually improve overall water quality by reducing raw sewage overflows. “Growing plants and vegetation along the creek banks can be very efficient in filtering pollutants and making sure the water going into the bay is better quality,” said David Smith, manager of Clean Water Act permits for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency office in San Francisco. “There’s a lot of environmental benefit in turning streams back into living systems.” Seattle has many urban creeks, most of which have had some sections reopened or restored in recent decades. These projects have improved water quality and reintroduced wildlife into a populated urban area, said Judith Noble, a strategic adviser for Seattle Public Utilities. Yet the process has been vexing at times, and full of challenges, Noble said. Some creeks have become healthy habitat for spawning salmon and other wildlife, yet other creeks have been polluted from urban runoff, increasing fish deaths. Federal fisheries managers are studying the fish deaths, Noble said, trying to figure out the toxins responsible.

CHICAGO – Four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests. The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent. The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily. These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo. The study appears in Monday’s Archives of Internal Medicine. The healthiest group included neversmokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily. “You don’t need to be extreme”

to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. “These behaviors add up, so together it’s quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it.” For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable cutoffs in the study, Kvaavik said, noting that the amounts are pretty modest and less strict than many guidelines. The U.S. government generally recommends at least 4 cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, depending on age and activity level; and about 2 1/2 hours of exercise weekly. Study participants were 4,886 British adults aged 18 and older, or 44 years old on average. They were randomly selected from participants in a separate nationwide British health survey. Study subjects were asked about various lifestyle habits only once, a potential limitation, but Kvaavik said those habits tend to be fairly stable in adulthood. Death certificates were checked for the next 20 years. The most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer, both related to unhealthy lifestyles. Kvaavik said her results are applicable to other westernized nations including the United States. June Stevens, a University of North Carolina public health researcher, said the results are in line with previous studies that examined the combined effects of health-related habits on longevity. The findings don’t mean that everyone who maintains a healthy lifestyle will live longer than those who don’t, but it will increase the odds, Stevens said.

BARCELONA – Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is confident that if his side are faithful to their style of football then they do not need to be worried about the physical threat from Inter Milan and can turn around their Champions League semi-final tie. Coach Pep Guardiola has constructed an all-conquering side that swept all before them last season but now they face their toughest European test against Inter after losing the first-leg 3-1. The showdown at the San Siro was about two different styles of football. The free-flowing open game of Guardiola was pitted against the controlled approach of Jose Mourinho and it was the Inter coach who came out on top. Inter out-fought their opponents, hassling them out of their stride, leading to several Barca players to complain afterwards that the referee was too lenient. There is plenty of belief in Catalonia, though, that Barcelona can impose their own passing game on Inter at the Nou Camp on Wednesday and knock out the Italian champions. “We will have to press but most importantly we must play our own football. They are going to play strongly and aggressively but we have to be concentrated on our own game,” said Ibrahimovic. “We have to be ready for this war. They are going to exploit their virtues but we cannot

change our way of playing like we did in Milan. We lost because we did not play our usual football, not because they won with their approach. The 31 result looks a heavy defeat but in reality it is the same as 1-0. If you look at our last two Champions League games at home, how many goals did we score? Against Stuttgart it was four and then against Arsenal another four. McLaren not satisified with MP4-25 speed MARTIN Whitmarsh insists that McLaren cannot be satisfied with the speed of its car, despite leading the world championship standings heading into the start of the European season. Although the Woking-based outfit has made the most of the opportunities that have come its way in the first four races, with Jenson Button’s two victories helping him lead the drivers’ standings, team principal Whitmarsh thinks there is plenty of work to do to extract more pace from the MP4-25.

Rossi relieved by three-week break VALENTINO Rossi is relieved to have been granted a three-week break between the first and second MotoGP races of the year, to allow his injured shoulder more time to recover. The postponement of the Motegi race until October, due to the travel crises caused by the ash cloud from the Icelandic volanco, gave the world champion an extra weekend to get over the injury he sustained falling off a motocross bike. He is confident that he will be close to full strength this weekend at Jerez. “It was a pity not to go to Japan, but we will go in October now and for me it was quite lucky to have this extra week,” said Rossi. “I didn’t hurt myself badly in the motocross fall but my shoulder was quite sore so it was good to give it more time to recover. I don’t know yet how much it will affect me this weekend, I hope not too much.” “The win in Qatar was fantastic, but we saw there that we are lacking in some areas compared to our rivals so we have work to do. I love to race at Jerez, the atmosphere is amazing and I have fantastic fans in Spain. Last year I had a great win and I hope we can challenge again this time.” Rossi is leading the standings after one round, ahead of Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo and Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso.

“There is no secret that we will keep pushing,” said Whitmarsh, who is well aware that Red Bull has secured pole position at every race so far. “We have a new package that we are bringing for Barcelona and for every race we have demonstrated over the years that we can improve the car, race on race, and that is what we have got to do. “All the teams will be doing that and we just have to do it at a quicker rate. We are closer than we have been, we are not satisfied with the car, and we have to improve it and have to make it quicker.” Whitmarsh also admitted that his team was left slightly frustrated by the way Formula 1’s ride-height control controversy panned out - having been given the go-ahead to develop its own version prior to the FIA outlawing it after the Malaysian Grand Prix. “It was understood some time ago by previous rulings that you could not have specific parts that move in relation to the sprung mass which have influence on the aerodynamics of the car,” he said. “From that we were given that you could not have parts in the suspension system that moved the ride height, but we sensed that maybe some teams were taking advantage of that capability, quite possibility legitimately. We enquired with the FIA and we were surprised when we were told that such systems were legal. On the basis of that, we started to develop such systems and we intended

to have such a system in China. Then, before the race, we were told that the FIA had reconsidered that position and that such systems were no longer legal - so we had wasted a bit of time. We are not trying to be critical of the FIA, because in fairness Charlie [Whiting] and the FIA have 12 teams diligently pestering them trying to get rulings, twists and turns in the regulations and interpretations, but I was surprised when we had a positive ruling, and delighted because we are about creative engineering and we enjoy those sort of challenges.” “So it was shame we could not introduce it, it would have given us a little bit of an advantage but we couldn’t do it, so we move on. That is the nature of it. The FIA has to make difficult decisions. It can always do things better, but it would have been nice if we had had a clear no at the outset but we didn’t.” Despite being forced to abandon its suspension plans, Whitmarsh says there is still plenty of scope for McLaren to bring more pace to its current car. “We can generate more downforce, we can bring on more aerodynamic efficiency, we can make is less sensitive, we can make it lighter, we can do all those things. That is our job and that is what we enjoy chasing and pursuing. If every now and again the regulations throw up an unexpected opportunity, we will jump on it. This [ride-height affair] momentarily threw one up, we jumped on it but ultimately couldn’t exploit it.”
