YAOUNDE – The bodies of two Britons have been found along with nine others after a plane crash killed an Australian tycoon and his colleagues, in Congo’s thick jungle at the weekend. “All eleven bodies were retrieved and identified yesterday (Monday) evening,” an official from Cameroon’s aviation authority said on Tuesday, on condition of anonymity. Condition of a number of tourism facilities in Bangli remains deplorable. Several tourist destinations in Bangli like Kintamani were not managed maximally. Therefore, they could not provide contribution for the economy of local community and regionally generated revenues (PAD) of Bangli. It was expressed by the Head of Bangli House, IB Raka Mudarma, last Monday (Jun 21). According to him, key to success of tourism sector of Bangli lay on the shoulder of the new elected regent. Hopefully, he would be able to improve the tangled condition of Bangli tourism. One of the examples was Penelokan tourist destination, Kintamani. Street vendors did selling under tarpaulin roof along the Penelokan were necessary to be re-arranged so they did not look very shabby and dirty. Similarly, other tourist destinations such as Penglipuran Traditional Village and Pura Kehen temple needed the same attention. Revamping of the system and tourism facilities in the future lay on the responsibility of the new regent, which should definitely be led by a figure of skilled and professional leadership in the Bangli Tourism Services. From a working visit of his party to Yogyakarta recently, he got experience that tourism management of the region was performed skillfully and professionally. Likewise, it was also backed up by adequate financial support and conducted in focus. It meant, for example, within a budget year the tourism services would improve tourism facilities at the three points. So, the entire tourism budget was focused on such three points. If they
lacked for budget, then the new budget injection would be continued in the following year so that all planning could be completed. It did not leapfrog and reached rudimentary result. According to him, in years to come it needed a management of tourist destination through single office. For example, if tourists would like to visit Pura Kehen temple, it required a special parking lot before going into the gates, not at the current parking area. Krama Subak Kediri Carried Out ‘Nangluk Merana’ Ceremony Ki Baru Gajah Heritage Kris Brought Around Rice Field Tabanan (Bali Post) –
The continuing failing harvest made Subak Kediri residents (krama) to try mending it in microcosmos (niskala) way. The residents carried out Nangluk Merana ceremony to scare away the rats by bringing around Puri Kediri Ki Baru Gajah’s heritage kris through the whole rice field area last Monday (21/6). The ceremony started at 7 am. The subak farmers were coordinated to gather at Puri Kediri by subak official (pekaseh) I Made Subawa. With a ritual procession, the heritage kris was taken out and then washed (diwangsuh). This used washing water will then be sprinkled around the rice field. After so many processions, the kris was then brought around the 120 hectares subak accompanied by beleganjur (gamelan) music. They stopped for a while at Pura Bedugul (ulun suwi) which is located in the farmer’s rice field area. Not only men, women were also involved despite the hot weather. They all carried the kris and other sacred objects such as rontek and heritage spike, while the priest sprinkled holy water (tirta) around the rice field area. The whole process ended at Bale Subak Kediri at Banjar Delod Puri, Kediri which then the kris was taken back to the puri. Farmers of Subak Kediri explained that the ceremony was to decrease the rats that
were out of control. They have tried so many ways to fight the rats such as spreading poisons, pesticides and even raiding it but none resulted anything. The rats became more vicious and caused the harvest to fail. Some of the farmers hoped that this ritual can save their farming. Meanwhile an angga from Puri Kediri, AA Raka Iswara, who joined the who joined the ceremony admitted taking down (nedunang) the Ki Baru Gajah kris was the krama subak’s request. Keris Ki Baru Gajah was thought to have a magical power to scare out any kind of pests that disturbs the farming. Iswara who’s also Head of Tabanan Living Environment Office said the kris can be brought around if there’s a request from the farmers because of an out of control disaster happening. Iswara also hoped, with this procession the rats attacks will be less so the farmers can harvest their paddy fields and will not cost any loss. (kmb14)

It can be reached as long as the government will be active in the creating and the management later on. The same suggestion was made by Commission B member IGA Gede Jaya Adhi Putra. According to Putra, this city park idea should be considered from now on either from the location and the people’s necessity side. If it’s possible, it’s not only in Kuta but in the whole Badung regency. “In every sub districts in Badung should build an open green zone or a city park, from Kuta to Petang. ISTANBUL – A roadside bomb blew up a bus carrying military families in Istanbul on Tuesday, killing four soldiers and a girl, as Kurdish rebels stepped up their separatist attacks. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed the blast on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which had threatened to spread violence to urban areas after a string of bloody attacks on the army in the southeast. “The terrorist organisation knows very well that it will not get anywhere with such attacks... This is a dead end,” Erdogan said in parliament in Ankara. There was no formal claim of responsibility for the bus bombing and nobody was immediately detained, officials said. The bus, carrying soldiers and their
families, was passing through Halkali, a suburb on Istanbul’s European side home to military lodgings, when the bomb went off early Tuesday. “This is a terrorist attack,” Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu told reporters. “According to initial information, it was a remote-control bomb planted at the side of the road.” The governor said the blast killed three soldiers, on their way to work at the headquarters of Istanbul’s paramilitary police, and a 17-year-old girl, the daughter of an officer, and wounded 12 people, two of them seriously. JERUSALEM – Israel’s defense minister on Tuesday criticized the approval by a Jerusalem planning body of a plan to raze 22 Palestinian homes in the disputed eastern part of the city to make room for an Israeli tourist center, saying it lacked “common sense” and “a sense of timing.” Ehud Barak is in the United States for talks with the Obama administration and his statement comes after the U.S. State Department criticized the plan to build shops, restaurants, art galleries and a large community center on the site where some say the biblical King David wrote his psalms. Mayor Nir Barkat’s office rejected the defense minister’s comments, saying the plan would rehabilitate a neglected section of the city and that he wants to build thousands of apartments for Arab residents. U.N. spokesman Richard Miron, however, called the Jerusalem’s municipality’s decision worrying. “We will be reminding the Israeli government of its responsibilities, and ensure that provocative steps are not taken in the city, particularly at this fragile time when the goal
must be to build trust and support political negotiations,” he said. In March, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pressured Jerusalem’s mayor to hold up the plan so authorities could consult with Palestinians who would lose their homes. The delay appeared designed to fend off U.S. criticism, at a time when relations are tense. Jerusalem is the most divisive issue between Israelis and Palestinians. Israel annexed east Jerusalem after capturing it from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war and nearly 200,000 Jews

Worker runs over people at Japanese plant, 1 dead Associated Press Writer
TOKYO – A disgruntled worker slammed his car into employees at a Mazda factory Tuesday, killing one and injuring 10, stunning Japan just two years after an autoworker went on a deadly rampage in central Tokyo. Toshiaki Hikiji, 42, was arrested about an hour later on attempted murder charges after fleeing in his car from Mazda’s Ujina plant in Hiroshima prefecture, southwestern Japan, police said. Japanese media reports said Hikiji was a contract worker who had been let go in April. He bore a grudge against the automaker and went there with a knife with the intention to kill, they said. But Mazda Motor Corp. spokesman Kotaro Minagawa said he had quit in April on his own, citing personal reasons, after working just eight days at the plant, and there had been no reports of troubles. The rampage has revived memories of a stabbing spree in Tokyo’s jam-packed electronics shopping district two years ago, also by an angry autoworker, that killed seven people when he slammed a truck into a crowd and then stabbed onlookers. Hikiji ignored security at the gate and drove into the plant as workers were arriving in the morning. Killed was Hiroshi Hamada, 39, a permanent employee, known as “seishain,” the company said. One male worker remained in critical condition, although details weren’t available, Minagawa said. “I pray for the spirit of the man who was killed, and pray for the recovery of the 10 who were injured,” Mazda President Takashi Yamanouchi said in a statement.

LONDON — Britain’s Treasury chief says he’ll cut government borrowing from 10 percent of GDP to 1 percent within 5 years by means of spending cuts, including a freeze on financial support to the Queen. In an emergency budget aimed at repairing the country’s economy, George Osborne said Tuesday his program “pays for the past and plans for the future.”
He said the government will make 30 billion pounds per year ($44 billion) in cuts to spending by 2014-15. Osborne said Queen Elizabeth II had accepted a freeze on financial support from government under his plans, and the government will impose a two-year wage freeze on most civil servants. Britain’s Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts government borrowing will total 155 billion pounds ($228 billion) in the current year.

JAKARTA - An Indonesian rock star surrendered to police Tuesday after two homemade sex videos of himself with his celebrity girlfriends appeared online, sparking a raging debate about Internet porn. Singer Nazril Ariel, 28, has been at the centre of the “Peterporn” scandal, named after his band Peterpan, since the grainy but explicit videos went viral on Indonesian websites earlier this month. “Ariel surrendered today at 3:00 am (2000 GMT Monday) after police named him a suspect for breaching the anti-pornography law. If he hadn’t surrendered we would have arrested him,” police deputy spokesman Zainuri Lubis said. The mainly Muslim country’s first celebrity sex video scandal has underscored the widening gulf between traditional values and modern, Internet-driven youth culture in the Southeast Asian archipelago. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has cited the videos in voicing his support for tougher controls on the Internet. “We have increasingly realised that our nation should not stay naked and be crushed by the informa-
tion technology frenzy, because there will be many victims,” he told reporters on Friday. The videos were apparently filmed by Ariel and appear to show him having sex with his current girlfriend Luna Maya, 26, and his exgirlfriend Cut Tari, 32, on separate occasions. Both women were prominent television personalities but their careers have imploded since the videos were made public and they have been dropped by their corporate sponsors. Tari, who is married and also could face up to nine months in prison for adultery, is due for another round of questioning later Tuesday, police said. The celebrities deny uploading the clips but could still face up to 12 years in jail for breaches of the country’s 2008 anti-pornography law. The case is the first major test of
the law, which sets stiff prison sentences for anyone who produces, disseminates, trades or provides pornography. The law — which defines pornography as all works and “bodily movements” deemed obscene or capable of violating public morality — has been criticised by human rights and civil society groups as a threat to pluralism. But Yudhoyono said last week the Peterporn scandal highlighted the need for more controls tailored for the Internet, which many see as the main source of pornography even though pirated porn DVDs are widely sold on the streets. Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring, of a conservative Islamic party, has jumped on the scandal to revive his pet project — shelved due to broad opposition earlier this year — to filter the Internet for “negative” content. Sembiring has promised to issue a ministerial decree by the end of the year to “save the young” from Internet porn. But he was forced to issue an apology on social networking websites after linking the scandal to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Government to accelerate budget absorption in second semester Antara
JAKARTA - Economic Coordinating Minister Hatta Rajasa said the government had to accelerate the absorption of budget in the second semester of 2010 in order to support the targeted 5.8 percent economic growth. “Government spending must be high in the second semester because realization in the first semester was low. This is because of administrative constraints,” the minister said here on Tuesday. He said he was optimistic that the growth in the second semester could be boosted if the budget absorption was accelerated, in addition to improving consumption, investment and exports. “I am convinced it can be accel-
erated because the consumption sector, investment, exports are on the rise and improving. We cannot depend merely on the state budget but must also give stimulus to the development of economy,” he said. He said that inflation would also be maintained in the second semester though there would be power rate increases by about 10 percent. “I am optimistic as long as prices would not follow electricity tariff hikes. Market should be maintained so that it would not follow suit,” he said. Therefore, he said, the government hoped that the inflation target it set at 5.3 percent would be achieved. “For the second semester, inflation is projected at 5.9 percent,” he added.

told the South Jakarta district court. Abdullah looked pale and shocked as the sentencing request was read out to the court. He denies any knowledge of the attacks on the JW Marriott and RitzCarlton hotels and says he came to Indonesia to start a computer business. an Internet cafe, he says. But prosecutors said he gave 54 million rupiah (5,994 dollars) to Iwan, a friend of key cell leader Syaifuddin Jaelani, who was also killed by police after the attacks. Iwan then gave 2.4 million rupiah to Jaelani to help with the bomb plot. Noordin allegedly told one of the suicide bombers to prepare for
death after the money arrived from the Middle East. Abdullah has previously admitted to meeting Jaelani, the alleged operational commander of the hotel attacks who was killed in October, but denied giving him any money or knowing anything about the bomb plot. He was arrested in Jakarta shortly after the attacks.

Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2010, last Monday (Jun 21), at Ayodya Stage of Denpasar Art Center. Their ability to recite the song of Gita Shanti, choir songs and to play gamelan and music, made the spectators of BAF thoroughly amazed. Although they did not see at all, these visually impaired artists were able to perform maximally in reciting the Gita Shanti entitled Jayaprana taking the sequel of Jayaprana—Layonsari of love story in the Kingdom of Kalianget, Buleleng. Ten personnel—consisting of five women and five men enthusiastically recited the hymn and Gita Shanti of Jayaprana choir songs. Appearances of these blind artists got vivacious appreciation from the audiences. Moreover, audiences gave thunderous applause for
many times when the artists managed to provoke laughter with fresh jokes. Reciter of the songs was Luh Ragi and Ketut Kariada and serving as interpreter of the song was Ayu Antarini. Their appearance was immensely amazing. Only armed with high spirit of learning they could master Balinese arts well. High spirit drove them to learn about gegitan recital, gamelan music and choir by hearing. However, within their restrictedness they apparently hid strengths. Balinese people, for instance, commit ritual attempts to attain it other than through physical efforts. Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2010 features the theme Sudamala meaning the purification as it has central meaning to their life. This purification is undertaken both for macrocosm and microcosm. It becomes a central idea in every single daily activity. As religious community, the Balinese always start their activity with rituals, at least by holy water. It is meant to invoke blessing of God in order their mind, word and act could be purified and always get connected with the blessed ways throughout the activities. For the self, they can perform melukat. When this ritual is made? It is carried out when one is getting recovered from illness, behavioral disorder or on Banyu Pinaruh, one day after Saraswati. Cut the 4 crabs into quarters with a cleaver or large knife. With a hammer, gently crack the claws and harder sections of shell. Finely chop 6 shallots and 2 stalks lemon grass. Steep 2 teaspoons tamarind in half a cup of boiling water. Chop a handful of fresh coriander leaves. In a food processor, grind together 3 cloves garlic, 1 tablespoon fresh galangal, 2-3 birdseye chillies, seeded, 4 candlenuts (or substitute 8-10 cashews) and 1 teaspoon blachan (hard dark brown shrimp paste), 1 teaspoon turmeric and salt and pepper to taste. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large wok or pan, and fry the paste until fragrant. Add shallots, lemon grass, crab pieces and 2 cups coconut milk. Simmer for quarter of an hour. Strain the tamarind water and add half to the sauce. Taste and add more if you wish. Ladle curvy into a serving dish and scatter the fresh coriander on top. Serve with plain rice. BUSINESS China takes first step to honour yuan pledge Agence France-Presse
BEIJING - China’s central bank on Tuesday took its first concrete step toward honouring a weekend pledge to let its currency trade more freely against the dollar by setting a stronger yuan trading rate. The People’s Bank of China set the central parity rate — the centre point of the currency’s official trading band — at 6.7980 to the dollar, 0.43 percent stronger than Monday’s rate of 6.8275. The central bank vowed at the weekend to make the yuan more flexible but ruled out any sharp fluctuations in the currency or a one-off adjustment. The move was widely seen as a bid to head off rancour at this weekend’s Group of 20 summit in Canada amid mounting accusations abroad that China’s forex controls give its exporters an unfair competitive advantage. “China has backed up all the talk with action,” said Brian Jackson, a senior analyst at Royal Bank of Canada in Hong Kong. “President Hu (Jintao) will arrive in Toronto later with tangible evidence that China is serious about increasing the flexibility of its exchange rate.” In early trading on Tuesday, the yuan strengthened to 6.7968 on China’s main foreign exchange market before weakening to 6.8134 on domestic demand for the
dollar, Dow Jones Newswires said. Traders said several Chinese banks were buying the greenback, amid speculation the central bank could be encouraging buying to reinforce the perception that its vow to increase flexibility means twoway fluctuation. The 6.7968 level was its strongest since policymakers unpegged the yuan from the dollar in mid-2005 and moved to a managed floating exchange rate. Tuesday’s level was still within Beijing’s tight trading band and analysts said China’s pledge did not presage a major revaluation. The stronger trading band signalled that the government was making good on its promise for greater flexibility, said Mitul Kotecha, head of global forex strategy at Credit Agricole in Hong Kong. “It was a further reflection of the reform of the yuan, the change and the depegging announced at the weekend,” said Kotecha. Policymakers revalued the yuan in July 2005 before reimposing a de facto peg at
about 6.8 to the dollar three years later during the financial crisis to protect exporters, which have been the backbone of China’s economic boom. Critics, not least in the US Congress, say that has left the yuan undervalued by as much as 40 percent and has cost US jobs. Prior to making its yuan flexibility promise, Beijing had insisted that the currency’s rate was not up for discussion at the G20, when presidents Hu Jintao and Barack Obama will meet other world leaders. The currency issue has been a constant strain on US-China ties, with members of Congress — facing midterm elections in November — threatening trade sanctions on China and pushing for action at the G20. Senior US Senator Chuck Schumer on Sunday expressed disappointment with China’s ruling out large fluctuations in the yuan and said lawmakers would press ahead with plans to introduce legislation aimed at punishing China over its currency policy.

WASHINGTON - US authorities on Monday issued new banking guidelines aimed at countering pay and bonus practices blamed for the excessive risk taking that fueled the global financial crisis. The guidelines were to ensure that banks use incentive compensation practices that do not threaten the soundness of the firms or create undue risks in the financial system. The rules, however, do not prohibit any specific forms of payment for incentive compensation or establish mandatory compensation levels or caps. Published five days ahead of a Group of 20 summit of leading economies set to advance global financial reform, the guidelines will take effect after publication in the Federal Register “shortly,” according to a joint statement by the Federal Reserve and three banking regulatory agencies. They were issued “to ensure that incentive compensation arrangements at financial organizations take into account risk and are consistent with safe and sound practices,” they said. The action was spurred by a
public outcry over bankers’ lavish compensation that contributed to the financial crisis in mid-2007 that pitched the global economy into recession. Joining the Fed in issuing the banking sector guidance were the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Office of Thrift Supervision. The guidance was originally proposed by the central bank last year. The guidelines were based on three main principles to address the issue of any overblown risk. Incentives should be provided to employees that appropriately balance risk and reward and that are compatible with effective controls and risk management, the agencies said. Compensation risk management also must be supported by strong corporate governance that includes “active and effective oversight” by the organization’s board of directors. The rules affect senior executives and other employees who could expose the banks to risks, such as traders with large positions relative to the organization’s “overall risk tol-
erance.” The agencies agreed that a “one-size-fits-all” approach likely would provide some employees with incentives “to take imprudent risks” and opted instead for a principlesbased framework for the sector. “Many large banking organizations have already implemented some changes in their incentive compensation policies, but more work clearly needs to be done,” Federal Reserve Governor Daniel Tarullo said in the statement. “The Federal Reserve expects firms to make material progress this year on the matters identified as we work toward the ultimate goal of ensuring that incentive compensation programs are risk-appropriate and are supported by strong corporate governance.” The United States and other leading G20 advanced and emerging economies pledged in September 2009 to work toward curbing practices that lead to excessive risk taking as part of a coordinated effort to promote global financial stability. G20 leaders are set to open a two-day meeting in Toronto on Saturday amid fears the global economy may skid back into recession.
Fed set to hold low rates as economy struggles Agence France-Presse WASHINGTON - The US Federal Reserve opens a twoday meeting Tuesday set to leave ultra-low interest rates unchanged amid weak US jobs growth and renewed concerns about the strength of the economic recovery. With the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) almost certain to leave the central bank’s target federal funds rate between zero and 0.25 percent, the post-meeting statement on Wednesday is expected to be center of attention. “There was once a time when the intrigue surrounding the FOMC meeting had everything to do with the eventual decision on interest rates,” said Patrick O’Hare, chief market analyst for Briefing Research. “Now, it hinges on other items like what adjectives are used in the directive, dissenting votes, and the inclusion of leading phrases like ‘an extended period.’” The Fed slashed the key overnight bank rate to virtually zero in December 2008, a year after the economy slid into recession. Some analysts speculate the central bank will keep it on hold until next year or beyond. Since the last FOMC meeting, on April 27-28, a mixed series of economic reports has highlighted the economy’s difficulty in gaining a sustainable traction out of recession. Jobs growth in the government-fueled recovery has been anemic as employers remain reluctant to add permanent positions in the face of the fragile recovery. But consumers without jobs or facing job insecurity have been cautious about the spending that normally drives about twothirds of the activity in the world’s largest economy. The unemployment rate is expected to languish near 10 percent for quite some time as the economy heals from the worst downturn since the 1930s Great Depression. Confronted with these challenges to recovery, the central bank policymakers were expected to reiterate that economic conditions “are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels of the federal funds rate for an extended period.” “Tweaking that phrasing would be difficult to justify, as the recovery appears to have lost some pep since the FOMC last met in April,” said Ryan Sweet at Moody’s Economy.com. “The nearly double-digit unemployment rate and vanishing core inflation strongly suggest the Fed will not begin to normalize interest rates until the second quarter of 2011, or later,” he said. Briefing’s O’Hare suggested the fed funds target rate was poised to remain unchanged all next year. “We think it is quite possible that the FOMC will refrain from raising the fed funds target rate in 2011 too,” he said. Developments in Europe since the last FOMC meeting in April also were expected to factor into the rate decision, but only modestly. Fears of a Greek sovereign debt default and contagion among other highly indebted eurozone countries have weakened the euro against the dollar, making US exports to the 16-nation bloc more expensive. Fed chairman Ben Bernanke told lawmakers recently that the economy was on track to grow 3.5 percent this year and would see only a “modest” impact from the eurozone debt crisis. “We doubt the Fed will upgrade its growth assessment in light of events in Europe, which likely pose downside risks to the economy in the minds of policymakers,” said Joseph LaVorgna, chief US economist at Deutsche Bank. LaVorgna noted that US exports to the eurozone account for just one percent of US gross domestic product, the country’s goods and services output. “Therefore, the direct impact from events in Europe on the US economy should be relatively small even if the dollar strengthens further.” Still, Moody’s Sweet voiced a note of caution. “Although we don’t expect Europe’s debt problems to be a major drag on the US economy, it’s too early to relax, and Fed officials may discuss contingency plans if the recovery were to show signs of faltering,” he said.

LOS ANGELES – Early on in his latest spy caper “Knight and Day,” Tom Cruise flashes that billion-dollar grin and proclaims, “I’m the guy.” But is he? Cruise definitely is the guy who rang up $3 billion at the domestic box office since the early 1980s, making him one of the most enduring hitmakers in Hollywood history. He’s also the guy who veered into his own personal bizarro world with Scientology rants that alienated or even offended fans and his lovedrunk bouncing act on Oprah Winfrey’s couch as he proclaimed his devotion to Katie Holmes. His box-office returns soured, and he made some career choices which, while not disastrous, were not the sort to restore a stumbling star to the audience’s good graces. With Cruise’s erratic behavior now a few years in the past, “Knight and Day” is the first real test on whether the dashing idol of “Risky Business,” “Top Gun” and “Rain Man” has lost his appeal. “The short answer is, I hope not. Those challenges have been there, but I think he has moved past that,” said Chris Aronson, head of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, the studio behind “Knight and Day.” “I think he still is the guy. If you look over the course of history, there are
very few actors who are the guy as long as he has been and are still rolling along.” “Enough time has passed, and he has tried to make amends,” said Chuck Walton, an editor for movie-ticket Web site Fandango.com. “This is sort of the perfect summer movie vehicle for him. I think most, if not all, is forgiven. ... DES MOINES, Iowa – Autopsy results show the bassist for heavy metal band Slipknot died of an accidental overdose of morphine and fentanyl, a synthetic morphine substitute, police said Monday. Paul Gray, 38, was found dead in a suburban Des Moines hotel room on May 25. A hotel worker told a 911 dispatcher that a hypodermic needle was found near Gray’s body and that pills also were found in the room. The autopsy shows he died of an overdose, Urbandale police said in a news release. They also said the
autopsy revealed signs of significant heart disease. No evidence has been found showing Gray had a prescription for the drugs, police spokesman Sgt. Dave Disney said. Police are trying to find out how Gray got them. “There is no evidence that a doctor prescribed either one of those substances,” Disney said. Disney said charges are possible but that it is too early to discuss specifically what those charges could be. A person answering the phone at Slipknot’s record company, New York-based Roadrunner Records, declined to comment and said that
there would be no official comment from the company or band until one is posted on the band’s website. No such statement was posted on Slipknot’s website as of late Monday afternoon. Phone listings for his wife, Brenna Gray, and Corey Taylor, a founding member of the band, were not immediately found.
Gray was a co-founder of the Des Moines-based band known for its grotesque masks, thrashing sounds and aggressive, dark lyrics. Slipknot emerged in the mid-1990s and its 1999 debut album sold about 2 million copies. The band won a Grammy in 2006 for best metal performance for the song “Before I Forget.”

7th-Graders Discover Mysterious Cave on Mars A group of seventh-graders in California has discovered a mysterious cave on Mars as part of a research project to study images taken by a NASA spacecraft orbiting the red planet. The 16 students from teacher Dennis Mitchell’s 7th-grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found what looks to be a Martian skylight — a hole in the roof of a cave on Mars. The intrepid students were participating in the Mars Student Imaging Program at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University. The program allows students to frame a research question and then commission a Mars-orbiting camera to take an image to answer their question. The newfound hole on Mars resembled features seen on other parts of Mars in a 2007 study by Glen Cushing, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist. Cushing suggested that these anomalous pit craters are like skylights — places where a small part of the roof of a cave or a lava tube had collapsed, opening the area below the surface to the sky. The caves are thought to result from volcanic activity on the red planet. At some point lava channels likely carved out caverns in the rock, and then left behind tunnel, or “lava tubes,” when the eruptions were over. They would have been covered when a solid ceiling of
cooled material settled on top, and then sections of the ceiling likely collapsed at some point to form the skylight entrances. Scientists aren’t sure what type of materials or deposits could be stored inside. “This pit is certainly new to us,” Cushing told the students. “And it is only the second one known to be associated with Pavonis Mons.” He estimated the pit to be approximately 620 by 520 feet (190 by 160 meters) wide and 380 feet (115 meters) deep at least. The young researchers had initially set out to hunt for lava tubes, a common volcanic feature on Earth and Mars. “The students developed a research project focused on finding the most common locations of lava tubes on Mars,” Mitchell said. “Do they occur most often near the summit of a volcano, on its flanks, or the plains surrounding it?” The class commissioned a main photo and a backup image of Mars’ Pavonis Monsvolcano, targeted on a region that hadn’t been imaged up close. The pictures were taken by NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter using its Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) instrument. Both images showed lava tubes, as the students had hoped.

CAIRO – An Austrian archaeological team has used radar imaging to determine the extent of the ruins of the one time 3,500-year-old capital of Egypt’s foreign occupiers, said the antiquities department Sunday. Egypt was ruled for a century from 1664-1569 B.C. by the Hyksos, a warrior people from Asia, possibly Semitic in origin, whose summer capital was in the northern Delta area. Irene Mueller, the head of the Austrian team, said the main purpose of the project is to determine how far the underground city extends. The radar imaging showed the outlines of streets, houses and temples underneath the green farm fields and modern town of Tel al-Dabaa. Archaeology chief Zahi Hawass said in the statement that such noninvasive techniques are the best way define the extent of the site. Egypt’s Delta is densely populated and heavily farmed, making extensive excavation difficult, unlike in southern Egypt with its more famous desert tombs and temples. The Austrian team of archaelogists has been working on the site since 1975.
RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilians are battling the bulge. A government study says the South American country known for its bikinis is expanding at the waistline. The Health Ministry notes that in 2009, 46.6 percent of Brazil’s 190 million people were overweight. That’s up from 42.7 percent in 2006. The rate of obesity also rose, from 11.4 percent in 2006 to 13.9 percent

JOHANNESBURG – Forget the Iberian scoring slump. Spain put up two goals at the World Cup — and Portugal went five better. After being shut out and heavily doubted in their openers, the Portuguese and Spaniards were dominant Monday. Portugal routed North Korea 7-0, knocking the Asian team out of the tournament, and Spain got back on track with a 2-0 win over Honduras. The 2006 World Cup semifinalist Portuguese finally got a goal from Cristiano Ronaldo in the romp in Cape Town. It was the Real Madrid winger’s first goal for his country in two years of competitive games. “It was important for him to score,” coach Carlos Queiroz said. Portugal was held to a 0-0 draw by Ivory Coast in its opening Group G match, but the goals poured forth on Monday. Raul Meireles gave the Portuguese a 1-0 halftime lead, and Tiago added two in the second half to complement Ronaldo’s score and those from Simao Sabrosa, Hugo Almeida and Liedson. “It was a great day for Portugal and Portuguese football,” Queiroz said. “The players are really happy with the way they played, the attitude for the game, the beautiful football, the beautiful goals.” Portugal still has to play Brazil to get into the round of 16. The five-time champions have already qualified. The 7-0 score was the most onesided World Cup match since Germany beat Saudi Arabia 8-0 at the 2002 tournament in South Korea and
Japan. Spain got its win of the tournament at Ellis Park, but it was Chile that moved into first place in Group H with six points by beating 10-man Switzerland 1-0. David Villa took care of the offense against the Hondurans, scoring in the 17th and 51st minutes. Villa, who has five career World Cup goals for his country, had a chance for a hat trick in the 62nd minute, but his penalty kick went wide of the right post with the goalkeeper diving in the opposite direction. JOHANNESBURG – Form and history favour Argentina against unpredictable Greece on Tuesday when Group B at the World Cup draws to a close. The South Americans have been the most impressive performers so far in the four-yearly spectacle being hosted by South Africa, defeating Nigeria 1-0 and South Korea 41 at Johannesburg stadiums Ellis Park and Soccer City. And striker Gonzalo Higuain has scored the only hat-trick to date at the tournament, using his head and feet to torment the Koreans in the afternoon sunshine before 82,000 appreciative onlookers. Now they take a four-hour coach journey north from their Pretoria base to Polokwane for a floodlit match at a stadium where freezing conditions forced French players to wrap themselves in blankets three days ago. But darker days lay ahead with Maradona kicked out of his last World Cup as a footballer for drug abuse and Argentina failing in their quest for a third title after winning at home in 1978 and in Mexico eight years later. Many observers believe a third title could come on July 11 in Johannesburg, but Maradona knows the World Cup is a marathon not a sprint and the steepest obstacles come in the knockout phase. So far, so good for Argentina, though, who have been pleasant on the eye with workaholic World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi doing just about everything except score. “I have to congratulate my players because everything they have done so far has worked out well. I am very happy at this World Cup,” said Maradona after a training session.

WIMBLEDON, England – Venus Williams took the Wimbledon stage in a Tina Turner dress and quickly found her groove. Williams’ latest tennis outfit won’t cause the international stir created by her French Open corset, but it was eye-catching: a white dress with a skirt that might set a Grand Slam record for frills. Her game also looked good as the five-time Wimbledon champion beat Rossana de los Rios in the first round Monday, 6-3, 6-2. Williams’latest fashion design resembled outfits worn by Turner when she sang hit songs in the 1970s and ’80s. “I love Tina Turner,” Williams said. “Obviously she’s just an amazing, amazing artist, just a survivor. She reinvented herself. Plus she looks great. I’ve loved her forever. So the dress is really inspired by her.” In Paris, Williams said her black burlesque outfit created an “illusion of bareness.” At Wimbledon, she had to make allowances for the All England Club’s conservative dress code. “Here it’s all about white,” she said. “There is no illusion this time. Still had the lace motif. I think it’s just a fun, elegant dress.” There’s a good chance fans will see it during the trophy ceremony. She has reached the final eight times, including the past three years in a row, winning the tournament in 2007-08 and losing to her sister Serena in the 2009 final. LAUSANNE, Switzerland – A year before the host-city vote, the race for the 2018 Winter Olympics starts in earnest Tuesday when the IOC selects the candidates that will go forward to the final phase. Unlike previous shortlist decisions, this one involves little suspense: All the contenders are expected to make the cut in what is already the smallest bidding field in three decades. The International Olympic Committee executive board is likely to accept all three — Annecy, France; Munich; and Pyeongchang, South Korea — as official bid cities, removing their previous tag as “applicant” cities. The three cities have been campaigning on a low-key basis since last October when they were the only ones to apply to host the games. Once accepted as finalists, they will be allowed to launch more visible international lobbying efforts.
Pyeongchang, bidding for a third consecutive time, is seen as the front-runner, with Munich as the main challenger and Annecy as the outsider. Although Annecy appears a longshot, there seems to be no desire in the IOC to drop the French bid, particularly since there are so few candidates in the race. The 15-member executive board will receive a recommendation from an IOC working group which studied the cities’ replies to a detailed questionnaire on key issues. “We’ve all seen the preliminary reports from the cities,” British executive board member Craig Reedie told The Associated Press. “It is important for us to receive a recommendation from the working group and to decide if all three cities go through or not. “Personally, in my view, all three bids are acceptable and should go forward. With only three candidates, it would seem unlikely you would eliminate one.”

Button had to threaten legal action to get ’09 prize JENSON Button came close to taking Brawn GP to court, it has been reported, after his former employers attempted to renege on a deal struck early on last year regarding the British star’s prize should he win the F1 2010 World Championship. Prior to the beginning of the campaign and in the wake of the sudden and unexpected withdrawal of parent company Honda that left the Brackley-based outfit fighting for its very survival, Button agreed to a significant cut in salary in order to help keep the team afloat. In exchange for that, and unbeknown to the outside world until now, a clause was inserted into his contract, to the effect that ‘in the event that the driver wins the championship at any time during the term, the company shall transfer...ownership of one chassis of the type driven by the driver during that winning season’. However, according to the Mail on Sunday, after the 30-year-old fulfilled his part of the bargain in clinching the coveted drivers’ crown, Brawn GP subsequently refused to keep its side, with an email to Button in January of this year claiming that ‘we have no spare 2009 chassis, as limited quantities were manufactured for
the 2009 season for cost reasons’. It is understood that six BGP 001 chassis’ were built last year, but Button – who switched teams from what is now Mercedes Grand Prix to McLaren-Mercedes over the winter – was initially only offered a replica of his title-winning car, a poor substitute that the Frome-born ace argued would lack the ‘special and unique’ value of owning one of the cars he raced to the laurels.
However, following the filing of legal action by Button’s company JB Next BV in London’s High Court in April, Mercedes has belatedly agreed to honour its initial promise and give Button one of the cars he drove last year, with a spokesman for the nine-time grand prix-winner revealing that ‘we have arrived at an amicable resolution, so there will no longer be any court action over this’.

Hurting his leg in a fall at the end of qualifying, Pedrosa rallied in the early stages of the British Grand Prix but would fade to an eventual eighth position, the Spaniard giving up second place in the standings to his Repsol Honda counterpart in the process. Nonetheless, Pedrosa is pleased to have Assen to focus on straight away as he looks to get back to winning ways, the nine-time race winner hoping to make it into double figures with a first highlevel victory around the legendary circuit. “It’s good that we are going to Assen straight after Silverstone because it gives me and the team an early opportunity to put the last race behind us and work towards another strong result like we had at Mugello,” he said. “We will learn from what hap-
pened at the British Grand Prix and then move on. It’s fortunate that I’m not hurt after Silverstone and I’m confident we can get right back on the pace this weekend. “Assen is a good track - even if it was better before they changed it a few years ago - and I like riding there. It’s a circuit which requires an agile machine because there are several fast direction changes - as there are at Mugello - so it would be nice if we get another result like in Italy. “The team is working really hard and I’m confident we can make a good start in first practice at Assen and have a competitive weekend. The crowds and the history create a special atmosphere at Assen so I’m looking forward to getting out on track again.”
