On the cusp of succeeding where numerous past congresses and administrations have failed, jubilant House Democrats voted 219-212 late Sunday to send legislation to Obama that would extend coverage to 32 million uninsured Americans, reduce deficits and ban insurance company practices such as denying coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions. “This is what change looks like,” Obama said later in televised remarks that stirred memories of his 2008 campaign promise of “change we can believe in.” “We proved that this government — a government of the people and by the people — still works for the people.” Obama will travel outside Washington on Thursday as he

now turns to seeing a companion bill through the Senate and selling the health care overhaul’s benefits on behalf of House lawmakers who cast risky votes. It is most likely that he will sign the bill on Tuesday, but the plans are not yet final, said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss as-yet unannounced strategy. Obama’s young presidency received a much needed boost from passage of the legislation, which would touch the lives of nearly every American. The battle for the future of the health insurance system — affecting one-sixth of the economy — galvanized Republicans and conservative activists looking ahead to November’s midterm elections. A companion package making a

series of changes sought by House Democrats to the larger bill, which already passed the Senate, was approved 220-211. The fix-it bill will now go to the Senate, where debate is expected to begin as early as Tuesday. Senate Democrats hope to approve it unchanged and send it directly to Obama, though Republicans intend to attempt parliamentary objections that could change the bill and require it to go back to the House. Sen. John McCain said Monday morning that Democrats have not heard the last of the health care debate, and said he was repulsed by “all this euphoria going on.” Appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” McCain, who was Obama’s GOP rival in the 2008 presidential campaign, said that “outside the Beltway, the American people are very angry. They don’t like it, and we’re going to repeal this.” McCain, who is in a tough Republican primary fight in his home state, said the GOP “will challenge it every place we can,” and said

there will be reprisals at the polls, in Congress and in the courts. The complicated two-step approval process was made necessary because Senate Democrats lost their filibuster-proof supermajority in a special election in January, a setback that caused even some Democratic lawmakers to pronounce the yearlong health care effort dead. Under the relentless prodding of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in particular, it was gradually revived, and the fix-it bill will be considered under fast-track Senate rules that don’t allow minority party filibusters. “We will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare and now, tonight, health care for all Americans,” said Pelosi, DCalif., partner to Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the grueling campaign to pass the legislation. “This is the civil rights act of the 21st century,” added Rep. Similar to the death of other dengue fever, this patient only got a short treatment at Sanglah Hospital. When entering into hospital, Yogi was categorized into critical condition.

Two housewives, the suspect Rosaria, 30, having the address on Jalan Majapahit, Tabanan, and Ni Wayan Nurani, 25, having the address at Dajan Peken Village, Mengwi, Badung, were caught stealing attires at Hardy’s Supermarket, Tabanan, last Saturday (Mar 20). They had to be accountable for their action, so that they were sent to custody room of Kediri Sector Police then. According to Spokesperson of Tabanan Resort Police Endung Hardanto accompanied by Chief of Kediri Sector Police Ni Luh Kompyang Srinadi, last Sunday (Mar 21), the mode of both suspects was the same. They initially pretended to be buying attires on the second floor of

Hardy’s Tabanan and then stole the attires on display and then they were hided. Later, they descended to the first floor and were captured by a security guard after performing a check. From the hand of Rosaria, it was found an unpaid white shirt with a tag price of IDR 189,000 and hidden in a white plastic bag labeled Hardy’s. Whatever the reason, Rosaria was then herded into Kediri Sector Police. “I want to have this shirt, but do not have money,” she said while undergoing police checks in Kediri. Similarly, the suspect Nurani took action by bringing the stolen goods in the form of a white shirt labeled IDR 39,500 put into a brown bag went down from the second floor and could feel herself safe for a while. Residents Do Fogging by Self-Finance Gianyar (Bali Post)—

Less attention of Gianyar Regency government to the outbreak of dengue fever cases in Gianyar triggered a question among the residents. In reality, residents of Sasih Hamlet, Batubulan, Sukawati, proposed a fogging for more than a month but they got no response from related institution. Last Sunday (Mar 21), residents had no choice but carried out the fogging at their residential area with their own fund. Fogging application letter was sent nearly a month but there were no responses. The reason was simply classical enough because government had no allocation funds. This kind of service made local residents resigned. For the sake of protecting the environment against the outbreak of dengue fever, residents of Sasih Hamlet was willing to be charged starting from IDR 20,000 to IDR 50,000 in accordance with the ability of each household. Teamwork Leader of Sasih Hamlet, Batubulan, I Made Sudana said the self-financed fogging was

done spontaneously considering the fogging application to the government was not responded. Though his party had often rechecked the proposal via phone, at the end they did not get allocation of fogging. This made them disappointed and he then took local residents to do self-financed activity. Within the Sasih Hamlet, there were currently 25 residents affected by dengue fever disease. If this condition was ignored and waited for the measure of Department of Health, probably more residents would be affected by the disease. Meanwhile, the simultaneous movement of draining mosquito nest was only performed in the east of Batubulan Square. A

similar complaint was also expressed by residents of Jalan Kesatrian, Gianyar. Notification by telephone to the Gianyar Health Services on the dengue fever incident afflicted local resident was not made, whereas such measure was expected and followed up by the fogging. Separately, a member of Commission D at Gianyar House, I Nyoman Arjawa, on responding the rampant dengue fever case admitted if the Gianyar Health Services did not have fund to address the rise of dengue fever disease through fogging. Two Stores at Seminyak Frisked by Thieves Causing a Loss of IDR 644 Million Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Two stores in the area of Jalan Raya Seminyak, Kuta, became the target of thieves, last Saturday (Mar 20). The robber alleged more than one managed to steal some valuables. Even, the total losses suffered by the owner of the store reached IDR 644 million. This case had been reported to Kuta Sector Police to be handled further. Information compiled at Denpasar Metro Police, last Sunday (Mar 21) said, the store burglary case was just known at 08:00 am Local Time. Previously, one of the employees of Refa store would like to open the selling silver jewelries. The witness was extraordinarily surprised after seeing the shop’s door was open.

On that account, the witness made a further check into the store and notified the owner about the incident. Having been checked, there were 147 pieces of silverworks disappearing from its place. The loss suffered by Refa Store reached IDR 263 million. “Allegedly, the thief entered into the store by damaging the main door,” explained a source in the police station last Sunday. In fact, it was not only Refa Store was frisked by the thief. Ripcurl Store located adjacent to the Refa Store was also frisked by stealer. Allegedly, the thief entered the Ripcurl after looting Refa store. “Because, these store are exactly adjacent to each other and to go to other store is very easy,” he said while asking for anonymity.

Noted, the goods vanished in the Ripcurl store amounted to 35 pieces of sunglasses, watches (63), woafshort bay (25), woafshort man (160), strutman (200), pampet (20), nurag boat shorts (5) and balance (7). Total loss suffered was over IDR 381 million. “The case is also reported to Kuta Sector Police,” he said. Furthermore, the burglary case at Refa Store was reported by Ni Ketut Arini Asih, 35. Facing National Exam, Students Confess to be Nervous Tabanan (Bali Post)—

The day before the national exam, many students admitted to be nervous and pessimistic. They were afraid because the questions in the exam coming out were not like the lessons they have received so far. Even, many students claiming to feel stressed on welcoming the implementation of national exam. Some visited a temple to pray so they were endowed with the ease and graduation, as well as soothing their soul. Most of the students admitted to feel fear because by referring to the consolidation where most students were declared not to meet the stated minimum requirements for graduation. A number of students who would participate in the national exam in Tabanan confessed to be worry and fear if they could not answer the questions. Moreover, the national exam was an indicator of their graduation. Because, in the consolidation test organized previously, many students achieved unsatisfactory scores on the subjects tested. “We have made good preparation, but seeing the result of tryout test, we are very afraid if the questions tested were not like what we have learned so far,” said one of the students of state senior high school in Tabanan. This was reasonable because teachers taught their students in different manner, so were the manual books in use tended to be different. They did not include the many students having good mark in one of the subjects, while weak in other subjects. In the tryout held before the

exam, 64 percent of the students were declared not to pass or only 36 percent were graduating. Actually, many students claimed to have followed the tutorial and learned the exam questions and the stabilization of the questions tested in the previous exams. Head of Tabanan Educational, Youth and Sport Services, Wayan Adnyana, last Sunday (Mar 21) admitted there were still worries among the students. However, he said, teachers have provided further guidance related to questions of national exam. He had confidence the exam would be better than the tryout test as happened in the previous years. The current national exam would be followed by 16,205 students from 403 schools spreading from elementary through senior high school / vocational high school. For senior high school level, they amounted to 2,551 students from 21 schools, 1,347 students from 11 vocational high schools, for junior high school level was followed by 5,829 students from 42 schools and as many as 6,479 students of elementary school level from 329 schools. To pray for the smoothness of national exam implementation, hundreds of teachers from subdistricts throughout Tabanan regency had conducted joint prayers at Pura Luhur Batukaru, last Saturday (Mar 20). According to Adnyana, the prayers en masse was intended to plead for the implementation of the national exam (UN) and the Nationally Standardized School Final Examination (UAS BN) went smoothly, safely and successfully. British Airways strike enters 3rd and busiest day Associated Press Writer

LONDON – British Airways and the union representing its cabin crew were no closer to resolving a dispute over pay and conditions on Monday as a strike at the carrier entered its third — and busiest — day. Operations at the airline were expected to be under more strain Monday as there are far more flights packed in to normal scheduling than over the weekend. The Unite union and BA have both claimed victory over the walkout that has caused the airline to cancel over half its 1,950 flights normally scheduled over the period. BA reported that nearly 98 percent of staff reported for work at Gatwick and more than half showed up at Heathrow, allowing it to reinstate a number of canceled flights. However, Unite said that only 300 of its 2,200 cabin crew scheduled to work over the weekend turned up, and accused the airline of counting inbound crew to inflate the numbers of staff on duty. BA has warned knock-on effects from this walkout will carry on throughout this week and workers are due to strike again from Saturday for four days if the dispute is not resolved. The acrimonious dispute with its workers is expected to be finan-

cially crippling for BA — analysts forecast it could cost the airline more than the 63 million pounds ($95 million) that Chief Executive Willie Walsh is trying to save through the changes to workers’ pay and conditions. The walkout is also bad news for Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Labour Party, which relies heavily on funding from the country’s labor unions, and a gift for the main opposition Conservative Party, which is leading opinion polls ahead of a general election due within weeks. MANILA – Philippine army generals vowed on Monday to uphold democracy and not seize power if presidential elections on May 10 fail to produce a clear winner, dismissing reports of a possible junta as speculation. Rumors that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was looking to stay in power beyond her term intensified after an aide said last week there was a risk of an army takeover if no election winners were declared when her term ends on June 30. There have been several failed coup attempts since 1989 and the former head of the Marine Corps is in jail facing possible court martial for his role in an aborted coup in 2006. “I assure our people that nothing will happen and we will be there to see to it that everything is legal, the constitution will be respected,” Major-General Juancho Sabban, commander of the Philippine Marines

Corps, told reporters at an army base. “These talks about junta are just rumors and speculations. The Armed Forces will be one in protecting the people and the vote. All of us will not follow illegal orders,” Sabban said. Other senior army and police generals shared that sentiment, pointing to failed attempts by rogue troops to grab power. The Philippines is introducing an automated voting system, and there are concerns machine breakdowns and delays in transmitting results could lead to a failed poll. Arroyo, dogged by accusations of corruption and election fraud, has survived five impeachment motions

German diocese say 6 accused over abuse Associated Press Writer

The allegations of physical abuse in Regensburg are centered around the Etterzhausen school just outside Regensburg — considered a feeder school for the Regensburger Domspatzen boys choir, which was led for decades by the brother of Pope Benedict XVI, Georg Ratzinger. Ratzinger, 86, has admitted slapping pupils after he took over the Regensburger Domspatzen boys choir in the 1964 — though such punishments were commonplace in Germany at that time. He also said he was aware of allegations of physical abuse the elementary school, and publicly apologized for doing nothing about it, but he was not aware of sexual abuse. Neck said that of those accused of sexual abuse, one has been linked to the Regensburger Domspatzen — an assistant teacher who later became a priest identified only as Sturmius W. In addition to an initial allegation against him already reported, Neck said another victim has now come forward with accusations against the priest, who has been suspended from his duties. Benedict, 82, was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982 when he was brought to the Vatican to head the body responsible for investigating abuse cases. During that time, he came under criticism for decreeing that even the most serious abuse cases must first be investigated internally. Neck said his diocese has three investigators working on the case — one expert to handle accusations of sexual crimes, another to deal with people reporting physical abuse, and an attorney to investigate further the physical abuse cases. He said seven people have reported incidents of sexual abuse by six people who are still alive. He said others have reported being abused by people who are now dead, but did not give any figures. In all of the cases the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution has now expired — with allegations against five of the six dating from before the mid-1970s and the accusation against the sixth from 1984. Still, Neck said, all information was being turned over to the public prosecutors’ office for evaluation. “All concrete allegations are turned over to prosecutors, regardless of whether the statute of limitations has expired,” he said. “That is up to prosecutors to decide.”

ABUJA – Nigerian police have arrested 164 people over a recent massacre near the central city of Jos and plan to charge most with offences ranging from terrorism to arson, authorities said Sunday. “In its resolve to deal decisively with perpetrators of violence in the nation, the Nigeria police has concluded investigation into the mass killings in Dogo Nahawa, Rasat and Jeji villages...which occurred on 7th March 2010,” police said in a statement. In all, 164 suspects were arrested, but two of them will serve as prosecution witnesses, according to police. It said 41 are to be charged with terrorism and culpable homicide while 121 face multiple offences of unlawful possession of firearms, rioting, arson and causing grievous hurt. Homicide can result in a death sentence while terrorism is punishable by a life jail term.

Hundreds of people — mainly women and children from predominantly Christian communities — have been killed in the past two weeks in villages near the city of Jos. Police say over 100 were killed with machetes, while government officials insist more than 500 were massacred by the nomadic Fulani. On Wednesday, Muslim herdsmen disguised as soldiers butchered around a dozen Christians in two villages near Jos, setting some of them ablaze. Some residents said the killings were part of a spiralling feud between the Fulani and Berom, who are farmers, which had been sparked by the theft of cattle, rather than for religious motives. Others said it was reprisal for the killings of more than 300 mainly Muslims in January in and around the same city. Police also said 213 suspects have already been charged for various offences connected to the January violence and were being held in various prisons across the country.

MONTERREY, Mexico – Two men killed in a shootout between soldiers and gunmen near a prestigious university in this northern Mexican city were graduate students, not suspected drug traffickers, officials said. The victims were studying engineering at Monterrey Tech University, according to Nuevo Leon state Attorney General Alejandro Garza y Garza. Army officials mistakenly told state prosecutors that two suspected gunmen died in Friday’s clash, Garza y Garza said late Saturday. Monterrey Tech University rector Rafael Rangel said in a news release that both students had scholarships for academic excellence and had been at the college minutes before the shootout. On Sunday, gunmen targeting the

police chief of a town outside Monterrey killed his bodyguard and wounded three other people, said a Nuevo Leon State Investigative Agency spokesman, who was not authorized to give his name. The spokesman said it was not immediately clear if Santa Catarina police chief Rene Castillo was among the wounded. Phones rang unanswered at local government offices at Santa Catarina. There has been a series of shootouts over the past week in the area around Monterrey, Mexico’s third-largest city and an industrial hub. Gangs last week also used abandoned cars to block several main roads in the city in an attempt to impede military patrols. The federal government has said gangs are lashing back over the arrests of suspects tied to Beltran Leyva cartels and other organizations in the area.

Jakarta - The United Nations-World Tourism Organization (UN-WTO) has predicted that the tourism sector in Indonesia this year would grow by six percent. “According UN-WTO Secretary General Thaleb Rifai, the Indonesian tourism sector would grow by six percent or three points above the world`s tourism development,” Promotion of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Culture and Tourism, I Gde Pitana, said here on Monday. Pitana said Thaleb Rifai tole him about the growth of Indonesian tourism sector when they met at International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin, Germany, from March 10-14, 2010. He said that at the International Tourism Board in Berlin, the UN-WTO secretary general also predicted the wold‘s tourism sector would rise to the medium level or around three to four percent. Therefore, Pitana said more effort should be made to have the target realized. He expressed optimism that Indonesia would reach its target of 7 million tourist visiting the country this year, because the UN-WTO in Berlin also admired Indonesia for its capability to maintain the growth of tourism sector amidst global crisis of which, the world experienced a decline in tourism development to 4 percent in 2009. “UN-WTO was of the opinion that not many countries would be able to be like Indonesia in tourism sector,” Pitana said. Otonan: Real ‘Birthday’ Celebration for Companions Month by month has gone by and another year is coming. Time is so significant to humans when he performs action and writes down his story of life. When having arrived at certain point, he may need a short break for an introspection and commemoration of a beautiful moment in his lifetime. Yes, it’s commonly known as birthday, an annual celebration of the day on which one was born. Etymologically, there may have been a common ‘misperception’ here where birthday in the Gregorian calendar should be celebrated on the same day as the word suggests and not the same date (should be birth date). On the contrary, otonan in the Balinese (Hindu) tradition is similar thing but of different context. This one is celebrated every 210 days on the same day based on Javano-Balinese wuku year. So, it can be said a real birthday. For example, if one was born on Wednesday (day) Kliwon (five-day week) Dungulan (one of thirty wukus), he will celebrate his otonan on the same day as above. Another difference between the two is the dating system, particularly on the starting point of new date. If the Gregorian starts at 00:01, the wuku at the sunrise.

Sometimes, there is also misunderstanding among some Balinese to determine the day of a baby that was born at dawn, let’s say on Wednesday Kliwon Dungulan at 04:00. Based on Gregorian calendar, the day and date have belonged to the next (Thursday) and will become its ‘birth date’ later. However, its otonan should not follow this calendar system, but as the baby was born at 04:00, it should belong to Wednesday (Buda) based on the wuku system. This misdating may often inflict mistakes in determining his otonan day and its character does not accord with the Hindu astrology. This then needs something like ritual adjustment in Hindu belief to the appropriate day through an exorcism rite as mentioned in palm-leaf manuscript that commonly used as reference like Wrehaspati Kalpa. Otonan in Balinese tradition is actually a private and comprehensive ritual that only celebrated by the family internally. By certain kinds of oblation, the ritual is intended for one’s inner and outer self along with his kanda empat or four companions that are believed to accompany him since birth to the end of lifetime and even the period after death. They are expressed in personifi-

cation as amniotic fluid, vernix cascosa, the afterbirth and the blood. In Hindu belief, the names of the four companions will change in keeping with the increasing age of the human self and so are the places where they indwell. The four will loyally keep the self in this world. If ‘spiritual’ communication and empowerment run well among the five, one will never feel fearful wherever he goes and can do healing. As loyal and eternal companions, too, they will accompany the self around the clock. By doing this, they will know every single deed of the self during its interaction with corporeal body. After death, on facing the court of Yama, no facts can be hidden or no lies can be told, as the four companions will deliver the true witness. In essence, otonan is an immensely important celebration for the Hindus. It constitutes right moment to reorganize, encourage the relationship of human self with the four integrated companions as the otonan contains two dimensional aspects, both sekala (visible) and niskala (invisible). By this, it is also expected to promote harmony between the body with soul and finally reach eternal bliss here and after. (BTN/*)

Place in heavy sauce pan, add all remaining ingredients and cook over medium heat for approximately 60 minutes or until water is evaporated and marinade changes to golden color. Cool before using.

Heat oil in heavy saucepan, add spice paste and coriander seeds and sauté for 2 minutes over medium heat. Add lamb, cardamom (kapulaga), lemon grass, 1½ cups chicken stocks and vinegar, bring to boil and simmer until ¾ cooked. 2. Add coconut milk, bring to boil and simmer until meat is tender. Should the sauce reduce too much, add a little chicken stock. The sauce should be creamy in consistency. 3. Serve with steamed rice of compressed rice cakes, fried shallots, lemon sliced and sliced celery.

LONDON – World stock markets retreated Monday following Wall Street’s sell-off on Friday and amid ongoing concerns about Greece’s debt crisis ahead of a key meeting of EU leaders later this week. European markets followed their Asian counterparts lower with the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares down 55.36 points, or 1 percent, at 5,594.76. Germany’s DAX fell 49.73 points, or 0.8 percent, to 5,932.70 while the CAC-40 in France was 37 points, or 0.9 percent, lower at 3,888.44. Wall Street was poised for further losses after closing down Friday for the first time in nine days — Dow futures were down 61 points, or 0.6 percent, at 10,626, while the broader Standard & Poor’s 500 futures fell 8.5 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,147.80. “Some kind of adjustment — especially given concern over mounting debt in developed economies — was always looking imminent,” said Anthony Grech, market strategist at IG Index. The most acute debt problems continue to center on Greece, especially as the response from leaders in the EU appear to be contradictory. While Asia is helping lead the world toward stronger growth after the global crisis that began in 2008, the region’s developing economies face key policy challenges, said Lipsky, the IMF’s first deputy managing director. “While the region’s story is very much a positive one it should not be forgotten that significant numbers of

the region’s citizens remain poor or vulnerable. In developing countries, even small economic dislocations can provoke substantial challenges,” Lipsky told a conference. He said the recent crisis pushed an estimated 14 million people back into poverty in Asia. “Agricultural poverty remains a particular problem, partly reflecting a widening gap between urban and rural income,” Lipsky said. He was speaking at an international gathering in Hanoi, attended by around 100 delegates including policymakers, diplomats, analysts and non-governmental groups, to discuss post-crisis growth and poverty reduction in Asia. Lipsky said some Asian developing nations face large fiscal deficits and public debt, high credit growth and inflation and low international reserves. “As a recovery takes root it will

be important to rebuild policy buffers and to further improve financial sector soundness,” he said, calling for structural reforms to help raise developing Asia’s global competitiveness and integration into trade networks. SYDNEY – Shell and PetroChina looked set to gain an important presence in Australia’s nascent coal seam gas industry on Monday as Arrow Energy recommended an increased 3.15 billion US dollar takeover offer. The energy giants offered 4.70 Australian dollars (4.30 US) a share for Arrow’s Australian assets including the country’s biggest holding of methane gas from underground coal seams, which is set to become a major export. Arrow Energy unanimously recommended the 3.44 billion Australian dollar offer, up from 3.26 billion earlier this month. Shareholders will also gain one share in a new firm formed from Arrow’s assets in China, Vietnam and Indonesia. “This transaction crystalises the value of more mature assets that have been built in Arrow’s Queensland business through the rigorous execution of our business strategy,” said Arrow chairman John Reynolds. “In addition, we are creating an exciting opportunity for Arrow Energy shareholders to continue to participate in a portfolio of earlierstage development assets in Australia and the broader Asian region.” Energy companies are working on plans to cool the coal gas into liquid and ship it abroad, mainly to Asia, from Queensland’s Gladstone port, adding a new dimension to Australia’s burgeoning liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. Companies have already struck multi-billion dollar deals with China, Japan, South Korea and India to sell LNG produced from natural gas fields in the country’s

His insistence on serving out that contract led in his later years to clashes with officials who oversee the event — held every summer in the Bavarian town of Bayreuth in the small brick theater built by Richard Wagner in the 1870s. It also triggered a spat within the Wagner family that itself was worthy of opera. For years, Wolfgang Wagner insisted that only his second wife, Gudrun, could replace him, although German government officials and others overseeing the festival refused to accept her. By the time Gudrun died in November 2007, Wagner was insisting that only the couple’s daughter, Katharina, could fill his shoes — putting him at odds with two other Wagners who also sought the job. Wolfgang finally agreed to step aside in 2008; Katharina and Wolfgang’s long-estranged daughter from his first marriage, Eva Wagner-Pasquier, teamed up to beat out a rival bid from their cousin. They took charge last year. Born on Aug. 30, 1919 in Bayreuth, Wagner studied the trumpet and French horn before being sent to fight on the eastern front early in World War II. In 1939, he was severely wounded and sent back to Berlin. He first took charge of the festival — along with his brother, Wieland — in 1951, reviving the event that had been stopped by the war. The pair worked to restore its tarnished name, with Wolfgang Wagner concentrating on organization and finances of the festival. The tiny prototype is reported on the eve of the UN’s World Water Day, which aims to highlight the worsening problems of access to clean water. Conventional desalination works by forcing water through a membrane to remove molecules of salt. But this process is an energy-gobbler and the membrane is prone to clogging, which means that de-sal plants are inevitably big, expensive, fixed pieces of kit. The new gadget has been given a proof-of-principle test by Jongyoon Han and colleagues of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It works through so-called ion concentration polarisation, which occurs when a current of charged ions is passed through an ion-selective membrane. The idea is to create a force that moves charged ions and particles in the water away from the membrane. GENEVA – Operators of the world’s largest atom smasher on Friday ramped up their massive machine to three times the energy ever previously achieved, in the run-up to experiments probing the secrets of the universe. The European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said beams of protons circulated at 3.5 trillion electron volts in both directions around the 27-kilometer (17-mile) tunnel housing the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border at Geneva. The next major development is expected in a few days when CERN starts colliding the beams in a new round of research to examine the tiniest particles and forces within the atom in hopes of finding out more about how matter is made up. Barcelona needing a victory to stay level with Real Madrid, who beat Sporting Gijon 3-1 on Saturday, got off to the perfect start with Messi heading them in front after four minutes. Barcelona had to wait until midway through the second half for their next goal when Messi went on mazy run, beating two players before finishing clinically.

The question of him scoring goals is the least important. Veteran Ljubicic wins Indian Wells men’s title Agence France Presse

INDIAN WELLS, California – Ivan Ljubicic beat American Andy Roddick 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5) to win the Indian Wells men’s title, the first elite Masters 1000 triumph of the Croatian veteran’s career. Ljubicic, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Friday, became the oldest first-time winner of a Masters event, filling a gap on his resume that had nagged since runner-up finishes at Paris and Madrid in 2005 and Miami in 2006. “Looking at my career in general, I did feel like I was missing it,” said Ljubicic on Sunday, who reached a career-high number three in the world in 2006. “It’s really a fantastic feeling to finally have it. It gives something special to your career.” He certainly showed he has plenty of quality tennis left in him this week, with victories over world number two Novak Djokovic and number three Rafael Nadal en route to his clash with eighth-ranked Roddick. Ljubicic put on a serving clinic on stadium court, belting 20 aces and winning a bevy of other points with his serve. Fittingly Ljubicic captured the match with a last service winner - but not before Roddick had saved three match points. Ljubicic had raced to a 5-1 lead in the second-set tiebreaker, and

went up 6-2 on Roddick’s backhand miscue. On his first chance to seal the win, Ljubicic double-faulted. Roddick then saved two more match points on his serve before Ljubicic clinched the victory. “He served great,” said Roddick, who had 11 aces. “The last two days was an exhibition in how-to on serving big points. “He had complete control over all four spots,” Roddick added. “He hit ‘em. Ljubicic said he couldn’t even regret his double-fault on match point, given his commanding lead in the tiebreaker. “And 5/1, you know, it’s almost all over,” Ljubicic said. “Then 6/2 I went for the big second, because that’s my best shot. Maybe somebody would say it’s crazy, but if I don’t go with my serve what am I going to go for?” Ljubicic also saved two break points in the ninth game of the second set, and he said holding on two win in two sets was crucial. “I was feeling a little bit tired in the end of the second set,” he said.

“I have to be honest, 7-6 in the third against Rafa yesterday took a lot out of me, and I was happy to be able to finish in two today.” In fact, neither player was broken in the match. Both worked their way out of trouble in the opening set, Roddick trailing 0-40 in the opening game before managing to hold. Ljubicic did the same in the fourth game, and when the tiebreaker rolled around it was the Croatian who took charge - taking a 3-1 lead and going on to wrap up the set by belting a forehand past Roddick after pulling him forward with a drop shot. “It was really a mind game,” Ljubicic said. “When you have two big serves, not a lot of rallies happening, it’s a very mental match. I was, I think, fortunate enough to be more relaxed by the end of the match.” Ljubicic claimed his 10th career title and his first since Lyon last October, and in doing so insured he will climb from his current 26th in the world into the top 15. The last time he was ranked in the top 20 was in January 2008.

Riders call for earlier Qatar race start

Renault hopeful of challenging top four Renault’s chief race engineer Alan Permane believes the team can get among the established top four this season after a strong first race in Bahrain. Robert Kubica qualified ninth at Sakhir and finished 11th, despite contact and a spin at the first corner dropping him to the back of the field. Permane believes that, based on the race pace shown in Bahrain, the R30 could be capable of challenging the likes of McLaren and Mercedes. “Robert did a very credible job to fight back to 11th in the middle part of the race [in Bahrain] and his pace was very competitive - as quick as the two Mercedes and the McLaren of [Jenson] Button,” said Permane. “It’s clear that we’re not in the same league as Ferrari and Red Bull at the moment, but the performance in Bahrain gives me confidence that we can challenge for some good points this year.” Renault, like most teams, will bring some aerodynamic upgrades to Melbourne, including a new front wing. Permane says Renault is targeting both cars making Q3 on Saturday and points finishes on Sunday. “We have some new aero parts for Melbourne, which should give us a bit more performance,” he said. “There’s a new front wing and a new part on the rear wing, which improves our overall downforce. “We’re looking at all areas, but it’s no secret that downforce still rules in F1 and the more downforce we can put on the car, the better. We’re also looking at addressing some of our weaknesses on the mechanical side, but that’s a longer term project and it will be a few

races before we can integrate suspension updates. “The target [in Australia] is to get both drivers into Q3. I think that’s a

realistic target given our competitiveness. If we can do that then both drivers should be capable of fighting for points.”

LEADING MotoGP riders are calling for the start time of the season opener in Qatar to be brought forward for safety reasons after several crashes in testing this week. The Losail event is scheduled to run at 11pm local time, but Casey Stoner, who was one of those to fall at Turn 2 along with his Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden and Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards and Ben Spies, thinks track conditions at that time of night are dangerous. “It upsets me because many of us had crashed there in previous years too,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Something’s strange, maybe dampness comes out of the surface. You don’t crash while pushing at turn entry, but when you are already straight. “On top of that, they’ve layed asphalt beyond the kerb and I don’t understand why: you slide there and you never scrub off speed. It’s difficult to bring the tyres up to temperature at the time when we race. Nothing warns you: ‘bang’, and you’re down.” Reigning champion Valentino Rossi believes an earlier start time would be better for European television audiences anyway, and called on Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta and safety representative Franco Uncini to take action before next month’s race. “To wait until 11pm is not very intelligent. It’s better to race earlier,” he told Gazzetta. “We haven’t had time to talk with the others yet, but I will call [Loris] Capirossi to do that. “We need to hear from Uncini or even better from Ezpeleta before the event, because if we talk about it on the Friday then it will be impossible to do anything. I think people will be happy to see the race at 8pm [in central Europe if the race is re-scheduled at 10pm] while they eat, so they can go out afterwards if they want to.” Capirossi said there were plenty of alternative options that would allow the race to take place safely while maintaining the night time spectacle. “Do they want to race at night? Okay, it’s dark already at 6pm, we can race at 8 or even at 10,” he said. “TV is important, but we count too and you’ll see something will change.”
