Buleleng regency keep suffer form heavy disaster in the early 2010. After two storms and high waves that made tenth of houses damage, heavy rain which happened in the last few days made a road collapsed. A road in Madenan village in Tejakula collapsed as much as 30 meters long. The road is connecting Buleleng regency and Kintamani. The destruction made the traffic paralyzed for couple of hours. The heavy rain which happened started on Saturday, January 16th through Sunday January 17th 2010 created landslides in some parts of the village. There were no casualties reported during the disasters. The people of Madenan village explained that the heavy rain was started on 4 pm local time. The villagers were worried there was landslide in the village because it was built in the prone area. At 2 am, some of the people
were hearing a loud sound and they saw some of the road was collapsing. The damage was around 30 meters in length and 4 meters wide. In addition to the road, there were also several pints that heavily damaged such as in front of the village office where landslide made an electric pole collapse. The police officers were arranging the traffic on the road in order to avoid longer traffic jam. The officers from Buleleng government also rushed to the scene in order to give the proper assistance to the victims. Gede Gunawan, an officer of Buleleng government, said “we deploy the personnel right away in order to assist the people there.”(kmb15)
Bad Weather, Many Turtles Stranded at Kuta Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Since the bad weather at the end of last December 2009, it has been recorded nine rare turtles found stranded on Kuta Beach. Seven of them have died. On average, these stranded turtles died due to stress and knocked by wood waste dragged to the beach. Most of the turtles stranded on Kuta Beach belonged to the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate), while the remaining were green turtle and turtle of other species. At last, a turtle was found stranded, last Friday (Jan 15) at 1:00 pm Local Time. It belonged to hawksbill of 41 centimeters in length and estimated to have reached 6 years old. Officers of Pro Fauna Bali, Dionysius, said of the many turtles stranded, two have been saved. Surviving turtle would be released into their habitats after their condition improved. In addition, the turtles were also marked with a tag so the development and movement could be monitored continuously. Before released, such endangered sea turtle were placed for a while in turtle shelters of Kuta Beach Task Force to further placed in shelters on the island turtle of Serangan. (ded)

Bali News Robber at Nine Circle-K Marts Captured Revealed by Recording of CCTV Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Since the past few months, robbery actions often targeted minimarkets like Circle-K. Recorded, nine outlets of Circle-K spread in the Denpasar region once become the target of robbers. Rampant robberies to minimarkets opening 24 hours made police officers furious. They always monitor and encourage routine patrol, whether it is at night, afternoon or morning. However, this strategy also seems to result in nothing to know the perpetrators. Allegedly, looting perpetrators always threatened the guards with a knife. Nevertheless, police officers, especially Directorate of Detective, Bali Police controlled by Chief of Detective Operational Unit 1, Cecep Nandi Cecep Trimaryadi, never gave up. The results of the investigation seemed to get a clue due to the existing CCTV recordings at the Circle-K in the area of Jalan Cokroaminoto, Denpasar. Based on the tape, it was known what happened two weeks ago. Armed with the tape, detective unit pursued the perpetrators. Having investigated for a few days, the trails of suspect were finally tracked. Apparently, the perpetrator was named Kadek Wariana alias Kadek Bola, 21, from Jembrana. The suspect Kadek Bola was arrested when he headed for his home on Jalan Mataram Gang Linggamurti No. 6 Kuta, Badung, last Thursday (Jan 14) at 6:00 pm Local Time. Without resistance, the suspect was arrested and immediately taken to Headquarter of Bali Police for further review. Spokesperson of Bali Police,
Gde Sugianyar, last Friday (Jan 15), explained that the suspect was being detained at Headquarter of Bali Police. Based on the results of the provisional examination, the suspect confessed to rob at nine outlets of Circle-K since November 2009. Every taking action, the defendant did it at dawn because Circle-K is open 24 hours and guarded by minimally two people at dawn (03.00-05.00 am Local Time—ed). The suspect armed with a bayonet to scare the guards of minimarket. “The suspect pretended to be shopping. While looking at the situation, the suspect entered,” said former Chief of Balikpapan Resort Police. If the situation was quiet, without hesitancy the suspect directly threatened guardians on duty. The suspect was draining money in the cash register’s drawer. In one-time action, the defendant admitted to get a result of IDR 1-3 million. “The money from the crime was given to his brother and parents. The rest is used for having fun,” he explained. The suspect was also known to have a brother in prison cells because of fraud cases. In addition to the suspect, police also seized a bayonet, cash worth IDR 1.5 million, two motorcycles of Jupiter and Vario type, clothing and a pair of female sandals that was about to be given to his girlfriend. Ecologically,Rats Hard to be Infected by Rabies Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The existence of Tabanan resident becoming the victims of rabies due to bitten by rats, deserves to be alert of all parties. To what extent is the danger of rabies if it has spread to the rats? The Head of Animal Biomolecular Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Mahardika when contacted, last Friday (Jan 15), told that before infecting rats rabies was very dangerous. The case of rabies from rat bite in Tabanan, according to him, needed re-examining. Ecologically, to this extent rabies has never come from rats. “Until now, naturally or ecologically, rabies has never been infected by the rats. It was once tested by the laboratory, and through the experiment rats were exposed to rabies,” he said. During this time, the well-
known animals exposed to rabies are dogs, insectivorous bats, cows, buffaloes, horses and cats. However, the transmission chain to cow is interrupted because this kind of animal does not bite when attacking, but gores. On that account, the risk of transmitting rabies to humans and other animals is very small. For now, dogs are animals spreading rabies. Viewed from the pattern of behavior, it is very little dog playing or contacting with rats. “However, it is not ignorable,” said Mahardika. Meanwhile, when asked for confirmation about the victims of rabies after being bitten by a rat Tabanan, the Head of Bali Health Services, Nyoman Sutedja argued that the death of Ni Nyoman Koming, 46, a resident of Katimemes, Sudimara, Tabanan was caused by rabies transmitted by rat. “Having been confirmed to Tabanan, in fact the patient suffered from diabetes. She was bitten by a
rat so her wound got infection due to diabetes she has been suffering. The patient died of the infection, not because of rabies,” Sutedja said when contacted on last Friday (Jan 15). Like Mahardika, Sutedja also said that rats were naturally difficult to get rabies. “Rats usually cause plague,” he said. For that, the policy of providing anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) is limited to people bitten by dogs, monkeys, bats and cats. Therefore, it is not recommended to people bitten by rats,” said Sutedja. Meanwhile, Sutedja also added that regarding to VAR supply distributors were ready with their VAR stock. Regencies/City government that has had their fund was unnecessary to wait for ordering VAR. “Expected, with the smoothness of stock from distributors, VAR in regencies/city could also be available,” he added. Mothers who give birth to babies with risky problems (abnormalities) can be a little quieter with the amniocentesis tests through the Integrated Prenatal Diagnosis program at Sanglah Hospital. Although the hospital is still working with Eijkman laboratory Jakarta, various abnormalities that may occur to infants can be known early by the amniotic fluid examination. Initial examination at Sanglah Hospital has been performed for patients on behalf of IGA Mas Irawaty, 40, whose address at Jalan Manggala No. 5 Tuban, North Kuta in the International Wing of Sanglah Hospital, last Thursday (Jan 14). This patient had just married and was pregnant by the age of 14 weeks of pregnancy denoting the first pregnancy experience. “The problem, she was pregnant at the age above 35 years belonging to a risk,” said the physician AAN Jaya Kusuma in the midst of examinations. Described Jaya Kusuma, factors other than age, a few risk needed watching by the mothers was the
record of having a baby with disorder, whether there was a family record of inheriting disorders. Ideally, the examination was performed between the age of 14 weeks and 15 weeks. USG test performed at the age of 12-weeks indeed has not indicated any sign, while amniocentesis test was done by taking the amniotic fluid in the womb of mother of 8 cc. This was done by a needle as small as hair where mothers would not feel any pain. However, its implementation should be done carefully and monitored by USG. “Slip a bit, it may get the fetus or placenta. The withdrawal is performed very carefully,” added Jaya Kusuma, who is also Director
of Medical and Nursing Services of Sanglah Hospital. Furthermore, 8 cc of amniotic fluid that taken would be directly sent to the Eijkman Laboratory Jakarta. “There, the amniotic fluid will be cultured, so that it can obtain DNA. From the structure of DNA will be examined the fetal chromosomes concerned.”Where’s the disorder, will soon be known. We will receive the results between one week and two weeks,” added Jaya Kusuma. Therefore, sample taking at Sanglah Hospital should be done under 11:00 am Local Time so as not to miss the plane carrying the package of the amniotic fluid directly to Jakarta. (san/r/bns)

Gede Udiyana, said that the development of bus stop at various locations passed through by Sarbagita transportation cost to reach IDR 1.7 billion more. Udiyana admitted that Sarbagita programs being under consideration for several years was one of the policies to address the traffic problems in South Bali. The issues on time and route inaccuracies that were not maximal, as well as real traffic jam inspired the basic idea to realize adequate transportation facilities. In other words, this endeavor was to develop public awareness so they would be back to use public transport in all daily activities, which finally could suppress the use of private vehicles. Udiyana said, by posting the budget made by the Bali Provincial Government in the 2010 budget year, his party expected that regency/city governments also supported this program. At least, said the former Head of Commission B of this Denpasar House, local governments that would pass through the city have already thought about the program and provided appropriate input for the continuation of the operational mode of transportation across regencies/city. SANTIAGO, Chile – Chile’s presidential election could come down to a nerve-racking, vote-byvote count Sunday after a late surge by former President Eduardo Frei made his race against billionaire Sebastian Pinera too close to predict. Pinera led every poll until Frei and outgoing President Michelle Bachelet repeatedly invoked the legacy of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, raising fears of a retreat on human rights if Pinera and his rightwing supporters regain the presidency. “I want to invite all Chileans to change Chile’s destiny with pencil and paper,” Frei, 67, said near the end, invoking the catchphrase of the 1988 vote that returned democracy to Chile. The theme put the Harvardtrained economist on the defensive, unsettling a well-organized campaign that had focused on economic growth, jobs and bringing change to a country led by the same group of center-left politicians for 20 years.
He urged voters not to lose their hope as the government wages a “campaign of terror.” With Frei and Pinera agreeing on most government policies — a reflection of the remarkable economic, social and political success that has given Bachelet nearly 80 percent approval ratings as she ends her five-year term — human rights became the wild card. Bachelet, herself a torture victim, steadfastly supported judicial efforts to resolve crimes against humanity during the 1973-1990 dictatorship, and more than 700 former military and security officials have been put on trial. But efforts to resolve dictatorship-era rights abuses remain a painful topic around Latin America, and aggressive moves aren’t always popular. Voters in Uruguay rejected an initiative to overturn that country’s amnesty laws last year, even as they elected a former rebel as president. Amnesties also remain in force in Brazil, and while Argentina overturned its amnesty laws, rights trials there have become highly politicized. The issue came to the forefront of Chile’s presidential campaign last month when a judge concluded that Frei’s father, a Pinochet critic, had been secretly poisoned to death. Bachelet raised it again by inaugurating Chile’s Museum of Memory less than a week before the vote. The ruling is the fourth time he has received a death sentence. An estimated 5,000 people were killed at Halabja, three-quarters of them women and children, in what is now thought to have been the deadliest gas attack ever carried out against civilians. A close cousin of Saddam, Majid earned his macabre nickname for
ordering poisonous gas attacks in a brutal scorched-earth campaign of bombings and mass deportations that left an estimated 182,000 Kurds dead in the 1980s. He had previously been sentenced to hang for genocide over the Kurdish offensives when he received a second death sentence in December 2008 for war crimes committed
during the ill-fated 1991 Shiite uprising in southern Iraq. And in March last year, the Iraqi High Tribunal handed down a third death sentence over the the 1999 murders of dozens of Shiites in the Sadr City district of Baghdad and in the central shrine city of Najaf. However, he is probably best known for the Halabja attack when in March 1988, Iraqi jets swooped over the village and for five hours sprayed it with a deadly cocktail of mustard gas and the nerve agents Tabun, Sarin and VX.

And speaking personally, I know of the great resilience and strength of the Haitian people. You
have been severely tested. But I believe that Haiti can come back even stronger and better in the future.” Clinton, the highest-ranking Obama administration official to visit since the magnitude-7.0 quake struck Tuesday, arrived in a Coast Guard C-130 transport that carried bottled water, packaged food, soap and other supplies. She was accompanied by Rajiv Shah, the U.S. Agency for International Development administrator who is acting as the top U.S. relief coordinator. Clinton also met with U.N. officials and U.S. civilians and military personnel working on the relief effort. Girl killed, 4,000 homeless in Manila slum fire AP
MANILA, Philippines – Fire raced through a slum near the main port in the Philippine capital, killing a 5-yearold girl, gutting hundreds of shanties and leaving 4,000 people homeless, an official said Sunday. There were no other reports of deaths or major injuries in the Saturday night blaze at the Baseco Compound, a crowded slum along the rim of Manila Bay, Senior Fire Officer Emmanuel Gaspar said. An Associated Press photographer at the site saw people waiting to be treated for minor injuries, including wounds from glass shards. The cause of the 2-hour fire, which was fanned by strong winds and destroyed 500 shanties, is still under investigation, Gaspar said. SEOUL, South Korea – North Korean leader Kim Jong Il said his country must bolster its armed forces, state media reported Sunday, two days after his regime warned it would launch a war against South Korea if necessary. Kim’s all-powerful National Defense Commission had threatened Friday to initiate a sacred “retaliatory battle” against the South in anger over its reported contingency plan to cope with potential unrest in the communist country. The commission also warned it could break off all dialogue and negotiations with the South. On Sunday, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said Kim had inspected a joint army, navy and air force drill that demonstrated the country’s “merciless striking power” against anyone trying to infringe on its territory. Kim expressed his satisfaction with the drill and assigned the military tasks to develop it into “the invincible revolutionary armed forces,” according to the KCNA report. The report did not say when or where the joint drill took place. Kim routinely visits military units and inspects their training to bolster his “songun,” or “military-first,” policy that rewards the 1.2 million-member armed forces — the backbone of his authoritarian rule of the country’s 24
million people. He often calls for a stronger military during the visits. The report of his latest inspection, however, came two days after his defense commission issued a rare statement strongly protesting the South’s alleged contingency plan, which it says is aimed at toppling Kim’s regime. The commission said “a sacred nationwide retaliatory battle to blow up the stronghold of the South Korean authorities,” including the presidential office, would begin once the plan was completed and put into practice. It also said the country would push for Seoul’s expulsion in any negotiations on peace on the Korean peninsula if the South didn’t apologize for the plan. The warning came as a surprise since the North recently offered conciliatory gestures to the South, including a proposal Thursday to discuss resuming stalled joint tour programs. Seoul expressed regret over the North’s threat, which it said was driven by unconfirmed media reports. South Korea has reportedly drawn up a military operations plan with the United States to cope with possible
emergencies in North Korea. South Korea’s Defense Ministry has consistently declined to comment about the existence of such a plan. North Korea occasionally issues statements that include threats to destroy South Korea. Authorities in Seoul monitor them carefully but usually take them in stride. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said the North had held annual winter military training but had no information on Kim’s latest military inspection. A ministry official said there had been no suspicious activities by the North’s military in recent days. Another South Korean government official downplayed the significance of the North’s latest joint drill, saying it appeared to be part of routine training. JAKARTA - Industry Minister MS Hidayat inspected the readiness of Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port on Saturday with regard to the implementation of the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement as of January 1, 2010. “I wished to see the impelementation of the program to overcome non-tariff barriers,” he said at the customs office. He said he wanted to make sure that anticipatory measures had been taken with regard to obstacles in connection with the implementation of the ACFTA. He said if the anticipatory program had been implemented well it would help strengthening the
industrial sector in the country. “The most important factor for the industrial sector is mechanism in the port,” he said. MS Hidayat was received by the director general of customs, Thomas Sugijata and the president director of Pelindo II, Richard Jose Lino. Indonesia signed the ACFTA for implementation as of January 1, 2010 after signing a similar agreement with Japan before. With the agreements manufacturing and agricultural products from Indonesia could enter the partners’ markets without tariff barriers. However with them the country’s domestic market could also be flooded by products from China and Japan if
the domestic industries could not compete. An economist from state University of Indonesia, Ninasapti Triaswati, said the ACFTA would not benefit all industrial sectors in the country. “For some manufacturing industries such as garment and footwear industries the implementation of the free trade agreement would even threaten continuity,” she said. She said the onslaught of products from China could threaten local products. Therefore, she urged the government to protect the continuity of local industries by postponing the implementation of the free market agreement for several industries pending their readiness for it.

CILACAP - A typhoon swept through Ujungmanik village in Cilacap district, Central Java, on Saturday, leaving hundreds of houses damaged. “I don’t think the disaster would happen because the weather was clear and there was no rain on Saturday evening,” Ujungmanik village head Supardan said on Sunday. He said the typhoon occurred in a very short time at around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. “The strong wind moved easterly at high speed. I thought it was not a whirlwind, but
a typhoon,” he said. At least seven houses collapsed in the typhoon. The disaster also caused major damage to 31 houses and minor damage to 157 others. A local resident, identified as Jadi, was injured when he tried to get out of his collapsed house, he said. There was no immediate report of material damage caused by the disaster. Supardan said the typhoon also hit neighboring Bringkeng village, causing one house to cave in and leaving 65 others heavily and lightly damaged.

JAKARTA - The government has designated three areas in the provinces of Banten, East Java and East Kalimantan to develop clusters of petrochemical industries. Banten would be developed into a cluster of olefin industries, East Java a cluster of aromatic industries and East Kalimantan a cluster of gas-based industries, Industry Minister MS Hidayat said in Cilegon, Banten, on Saturday. “In the future the development of petrochemical industries will be directed towards creating clusters of in-
dustries to improve their competitive edge,” he said. The development of industrial clusters was aimed at strengthening the country’s industrial structure which would integrate upstream and downstream industries, he said. To that end, the government was encouraging national businesspeople to take optimum advantage of local resources to meet their industries’ demand for raw materials, he said. “To support the effort the government has drawn up a number of policies, including a regulation on enhancing the use of domestic products,” he
said. Hopefully, the policies which gave national industries an easy access to local resources would help improve their performance, he said. The minister said the national chemical industry; including petrochemical industry had the potentials to develop well because there was still a gap between supply and demand. In 2007, the national chemical industry had a total production capacity of 37.67 million tons and increased to 38.24 million tons in 2008. The country’s exports of chemicals also increased to 5.63 million tons in 2008 from 5.2 million tons in 2007, he said.

I Made Suparka, the head of Badung Lifeguard (Balawista), said “the beach is never closed. During the high waves last year which can be up to 4 meters high, we never close the beach. Currently the waves are only 1.5 meter high so everyone can still enjoy the beach.” He said that the yellow with red flag means the beach is still safe and everyone can play on the beach. The facilities such as toilets are still open in order to serve the tourists who wanted to take a bath after they swim or surf. The tourists only forbid to swim or surf on the area between the red flags because usually the area is very dangerous. Suparka said “even tough the situation is normal but we always prepare enough personnel to secure the beach and watch the tourists. There are 68 officers stand by and patrolling on the beach and 50 others staying in the office.” Denpasar Geophysics and Meteorology Department predicted that there will be high waves in the next few days but Kuta beach is till in nor-

I Gusti Ngurah Tresna, the head of Kuta beach officers, said “the officers already clean the garbage every day but it still pilled up in many parts of the beach.” The waves keep carrying garbage to the beach and the officers along with the sellers all around the beach have been
working hard to get rid off the garbage. “We have been cleaning up since morning through the afternoon but the garbage keep cmoning,” he added. Ngurah Tresna explained that currently there are 33 officers and more than 1,000 sellers who participate in cleaning the beach. “During December through January 2010 period, we clean up the beach up to six times a day. In normal season, we only do it twice, in the morning and afternoon,” he added. The officers also use three

Ayu Wulandari, a tourist from Jakarta, said that she and her friends are very disturbed with the garbage. The smell is unbearable and it make activities on the beach are not comfortable. “I know the condition because of the force of nature but the government should act faster so it won’t give a bad image to Bali,” she added. However, Ayu said she will visit the beach again some other times because Kuta is the most favourite tourism site in Bali. While Rahayu, a seller in Kuta beach, said that when the garbage pilled up, her income decreased greatly. “Since the garbage filled the beach, I only can gain 50,000 rupiah while on the normal day I can get 150,000 rupiah a day. No one wanted to sunbathe near the garbage,” she added.

DENPASAR - I Wayan Maliana, the father of a Balinese woman who survived the devastating earthquake in Haiti last Tuesday expressed his gratitude to God Almighty for saving his daughter, Ni Luh Made Juini (35). “I thank Ida Sang Hyang Widhi, God Almighty, for saving my daughter during the disaster,” Maliana said when contacted in Dusun Kembang Merta, Bedugul, Tabanan district, on Saturday. He asked the government to facilitate his daughter’s return, along with two of Juini’s colleagues who were also working in Haiti, namely Ni Ketut Yasri Astiti and I Gusti Putu Ayu Sukerti. Maliana said he would offer prayers in a shrine as a token of gratitude to God for his daughter’s survival from the devastating earthquake which caused some 200,000 casualties in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He said he and his family were very worried about Juni’s condition when they heard about the quake in Tahiti, the more so because they were unable to call Juini by telephone. “Maybe because the communication network in Haiti was destroyed, but my family always
watched television coverage of the earthquake in the hope there was something about my daughter,” Maliana said. On Thursday (Jan 14) Juini sent an email to her family about her condition and said she was safe. “She said that she was evacuated by a United Nations rescue team that had come to her hotel,” Maliana said. The worries of Maliana and his family were over after they were able to communicate directly with Juini by phone on Friday (Jan 15) and Saturday morning (Jan 16). “My daughter said she would return to Bali after her travel documents were completed,” said Maliana. Juini is the second child of I Wayan Maliana and Ni Ketut Rumini who had been working in Haiti since February 6, 2009. The head of Bali’s Manpower and Transmigration office, Made Artadana, said of the three Balinese women who had gone to Haiti, Juini was the only one officially listed by the office as a migrant worker. Juini was sent to Haiti by a company named Botanical Spa on February 6, 2009. “Of the three, only Juini went to work abroad legally,” Artadana said.

Directions: Prepare dipping sauce by mixing all ingredients until smooth. Cover until serving time. Make a shallow cut lengthwise down back of shrimp; wash out vein. Mix remaining ingredients in medium glass bowl. Add shrimp; stir to coat with marinade. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Remove shrimp from marinade; reserve marinade. Thread shrimp on 6, 15" metal skewers, leaving space between each. Directions: Cut the 4 crabs into quarters with a cleaver or large knife. With a hammer, gently crack the claws and harder sections of shell. Finely chop 6 shallots and 2 stalks lemon grass. Steep 2 teaspoons tamarind in half a cup of boiling water. Chop a handful of fresh coriander leaves. In a food processor, grind together 3 cloves garlic, 1 tablespoon fresh galangal, 2-3 birdseye chillies, seeded, 4 candlenuts (or substitute 8-10 cashews) and 1 teaspoon blachan (hard dark brown shrimp paste), 1 teaspoon turmeric and salt and pepper to taste. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large wok or pan, and fry the paste until fragrant. Add shallots, lemon grass, crab pieces and 2 cups coconut milk. Simmer for quarter of an hour. Strain the tamarind water and add half to the sauce. Taste and add more if you wish. Ladle curvy into a serving dish and scatter the fresh coriander on top. Serve with plain rice. WASHINGTON - US consumer prices barely rose in December amid a sluggish recovery from recession, official data showed Friday, as falling wages pinched spending that drives most of the world’s largest economy. The consumer price index raised less than expected in December, by 0.1 percent from November, the Labor Department reported in seasonally adjusted data. Most analysts had forecast a stronger CPI rise of 0.2 percent. The so-called “core” CPI, which excludes food and energy prices and is used by the Federal Reserve to forecast future inflation, rose 0.1 percent as expected. Inflation “was broad-based, with the indexes for food, energy, and all items less food and energy all posting modest increases,” the Labor Department said. The year ended with the inflation rate at 2.7 percent from a year ago, a sharp increase over 0.1 percent inflation in 2008, the first full year of the worst downturn since the Great Depression. Inflation stood at 4.1 percent in December 2007 as the economy officially entered recession. Core 2009 inflation was 1.8 percent, within the Fed’s comfort zone on monetary policy. “The US is still in the grip of intense disinflationary forces, despite the basis effect lifting the headline year-on-year rate. Deflation risk is real,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief US economist at High Frequency Economics. “There is no indication that inflation is even a remote danger, and the Fed’s aggressive credit expansion and low interest rate policy have not had the inflationary effects that some critics feared,” said Andres Carbacho-Burgos at Moody’s Economy.com. Brian Wesbury at First Trust Economic disagreed, saying consumer prices rose 3.3 percent annual rate in the final three months of the year. “Investors and the Fed need to stop worrying so much about economic growth and
start to show more concern about inflation,” he said. The Labor Department said energy prices surged 18.2 percent in 2009, the sharpest rise since 1979. Gasoline prices leapt 53.5 percent, an all-time record gain in the data series that began in 1937. The hefty increases came in comparison with rock-bottom levels in December 2008. Food prices fell 0.5 percent over the year, the steepest decline since 1961. “The only place where pressures are building greatly is in energy. While demand remains weak, the price of oil have been rising fairly sharply,” said Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors. Amid double-digit unemployment and the loss of more than seven million jobs since the recession began, US workers saw their paychecks shrink last year. Real average weekly earnings were unchanged in December from November, the Labor Department reported separately. But on a 12-month basis, weekly earnings fell 1.6 percent, the worst pullback since 1990, after rising 3.1 percent in 2008. The inflation and wages readings came a day after the Commerce Department reported retail sales fell unexpectedly, by 0.3 percent, in December, capping the worst year on record for the spending that drives twothirds of the country’s economy. For all of 2009, retail sales plunged 6.2 percent from a year ago, the steepest annual plunge since the data series began in 1992. The Fed, in its Beige Book report on the economy Wednesday, said that because of the high level of unemployment, wage pressures were “subdued” and overall inflationary pressures modest. The US economy expanded 2.2 percent in the third quarter of 2009, after four quarters of contraction. The government is set to release its initial estimate of fourth-quarter gross domestic product on January 29. The Fed and most economists expect data to show continued growth in the fourth quarter and into 2010 but worry that high unemployment — at 10 percent in December — will curb consumer confidence and spending.

London – Call it pork in a petri dish — a technique to turn pig stem cells into strips of meat that scientists say could one day offer a green alternative to raising livestock, help alleviate world hunger, and save some pigs their bacon. Dutch scientists have been growing pork in the laboratory since 2006, and while they admit they haven’t gotten the texture quite right or even tasted the engineered meat, they say the technology promises to have widespread implications for our food supply. “If we took the stem cells from one pig and multiplied it by a factor of a million, we would need one million fewer pigs to get the same amount of meat,” said Mark Post, a biologist at Maastricht University involved in the In-vitro Meat Consortium, a network of publicly funded Dutch research institutions that is carrying out the experiments. Post describes the texture of the meat as sort of like scallop, firm but a little squishy and moist. That’s because the lab meat has less protein content than conventional meat. Several other groups in the U.S., Scandinavia and Japan are also researching ways to make meat in the laboratory, but the Dutch project is the most advanced, said Jason Matheny, who has studied alternatives to conventional meat at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore and is not involved in the Dutch research. In the U.S., similar research was funded by NASA, which hoped astronauts would be able to grow their own meat in space. But after growing disappointingly thin sheets of tissue, NASA gave up and decided it would be better for its astronauts to simply eat vegetarian. To make pork in the lab, Post and colleagues isolate stem cells from pigs’ muscle cells. They then put those cells into a nutrient-based soup that helps the cells replicate to the desired number. So far the scientists have only succeeded in creating strips of meat about 1 centimeter (a half inch) long; to make a small pork chop, Post estimates it would take about 30 days of cell rep-
lication in the lab. There are tantalizing health possibilities in the technology. Fish stem cells could be used to produce healthy omega 3 fatty acids, which could be mixed with the lab-produced pork instead of the usual artery-clogging fats found in livestock meat. “You could possibly design a hamburger that prevents heart attacks instead of causing them,” Matheny said. Post said the strips they’ve made so far could be used as processed meat in sausages or hamburgers. Their main problem is reproducing the protein content in regular meat: In livestock meat, protein makes up about 99 percent of the product; the lab meat is only about 80 percent protein. The rest is mostly water and nucleic acids. None of the researchers have actually eaten the lab-made meat yet, but Post said the lower protein content means it probably wouldn’t taste anything like pork. The Dutch researchers started working with pork stem cells because they had the most experience with pigs, but said the technology should be transferable to other meats, like chicken, beef and lamb. Some experts warn lab-made meats might have potential dangers for human health. “With any new technology, there could be subtle impacts that need to be monitored,” said Emma Hockridge, policy manager at Soil Association, Britain’s leading organic organization. As with genetically modified foods, Hockridge said it might take some time to prove the
new technology doesn’t harm humans. She also said organic farming relies on crop and livestock rotation, and that taking animals out of the equation could damage the ecosystem. Some experts doubted lab-produced meat could ever match the taste of real meat. “What meat tastes like depends not just on the genetics, but what you feed the animals at particular times,” said Peter Ellis, a biochemistry expert at King’s College London. “Part of our enjoyment of eating meat depends on the very complicated muscle and fat structure...whether that can be replicated is still a question.” If it proves possible, experts say growing meat in laboratories instead of raising animals on farmland would do wonders for the environment. Hanna Tuomisto, who studies the environmental impact of food production at Oxford University said that switching to lab-produced meat could theoretically lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 percent. Both land and water use would also drop by about 95 percent, she said. “In theory, if all the meat was replaced by cultured meat, it would be huge for the environment,” she said. “One animal could produce many thousands of kilograms of meat.” In addition, lab meat can be nurtured with relatively few nutrients like amino acids, fats and natural sugars, whereas livestock must be fed huge amounts of traditional crops.

SAN FRANCISCO – A Georgia mother and her two daughters logged onto Facebook from mobile phones last weekend and wound up in a startling place: strangers’ accounts with full access to troves of private information. The glitch — the result of a routing problem at the family’s wireless carrier, AT&T — revealed a little known security flaw with far reaching implications for everyone on the Internet, not just Facebook users. In each case, the Internet lost track of who was who, putting the women into the wrong accounts. It doesn’t appear the users could have done anything to stop it. The problem adds a dimension to researchers’ warnings that there are many ways online information — from mundane data to dark secrets — can go awry. Several security experts said they had not heard of a case like this, in which the wrong person was shown a Web page whose user name and password had been entered by someone else. It’s not clear whether such episodes are rare or simply not reported. But experts said such flaws could occur on e-mail services, for instance, and that something similar could happen on a PC, not just a phone. “The fact that it did happen is proof that it could potentially happen again and with something a lot more important than Facebook,” said Nathan Hamiel, founder of the Hexagon Security Group, a research organization. Candace Sawyer, 26, says she immediately suspected something was wrong when she tried to visit her Facebook page Saturday morning. After typing Facebook.com into her Nokia smart phone, she was taken into the site without being asked for her user name or password. She was in an account that didn’t look like hers. She had fewer friend requests than she remembered. Then she found a picture of the page’s owner. “He’s white — I’m not,” she said with a laugh. Sawyer logged off and asked her sister, Mari, 31, her partner in a dessert catering company, and their mother, Fran, 57, to see whether they had the same problem on their phones. Mari landed inside another woman’s page. Fran’s phone — which had never been used to access Facebook before — took her inside yet another stranger’s page, one belonging to a young woman from Indiana. They sent an e-mail to one of their own accounts to prove it. They were dumbfounded. “I thought it was the phone — `Maybe this phone is just weird and does magical, horrible things and I have to get rid of it,’” said Candace Sawyer. graded to the same model of phone and all used the same carrier, AT&T. Sawyer contacted The Associated Press after reporting the problem to Facebook and AT&T. The problem wasn’t in the phones. It was a flaw in the infrastructure connecting the phones to the Internet. That illuminates a grave problem. Generally Web sites and computers are compromised from within. A hacker can get a Web page or computers to run programming code that they shouldn’t. But in this case, it was a security gap between the phone and the Web site that exposed strangers’ Facebook pages to the Sawyers. Misconfigured equipment, poorly written network software or other technical errors could have caused AT&T to fumble the information flowing from the Sawyers’ phones to Facebook and back. Fortunately, Hamiel said, the vulnerability would be of limited use to a hacker interested in pulling off widespread mayhem, because this hole would let him access only one account at a time. To do more damage the criminal would have to pull off the unlikely feat of gaining full control of the piece of equipment that routes Internet traffic to individual users. AT&T spokesman Michael Coe said its wireless customers have landed in the wrong Facebook pages in “a limited number of instances” and that a network problem behind those episodes is being fixed. The Sawyers experienced a different glitch. Coe said an investigation points to a “misdirected cookie.” A cookie is a file some Web sites place on computers to store identifying information — including the user name that Facebook members would enter to access their pages. Coe said technicians couldn’t figure out how the cookie had been routed to the wrong phone, leading it into the wrong Facebook account.

MELBOURNE – Kim Clijsters is a big crowd favourite at Melbourne Park and she returns to the Australian Open on Monday determined to give her fans something to cheer. Clijsters, affectionately known as ‘Aussie Kim’ after her past relationship with Lleyton Hewitt, hasn’t played here since 2007 when she walked away from the sport when world number four to marry and have a baby. But now she is back, and with a bang. “It feels really good to be back here. Obviously, a lot of things have changed around, the courts and everything and inside. So that took a few days to get used to ‘knowing my way around’,” she said. “I was able to practise on centre court a little bit. It’s just nice to see that again because I never thought it would happen again, to be playing tennis here. It?s exciting.” The popular Belgian produced the tennis story of the year in 2009 when she came out of retirement to win the US Open after being granted a wildcard. Whether she can repeat that feat here remains to be
seen, with not just the Williams sisters standing in her way, but also the returning Justine Henin. But the powerful Clijsters showed she is a major threat by winning the Brisbane International warmup event, beating Henin in a classic final, and no-one is ready to discard her. “I’ve really put in the work and the effort, so I think that will always pay off in some sort of way,” said the Belgian, who is returning to the tour full time this year. She said her focus would be on the major tournaments. “My focus is not really based on ranking as much as probably really aiming for the big tournaments. I think my schedule for the year is far from being busy,” she said.
“Obviously, I hope to do well at the tournaments, but I think I?ll play about 15 or 16 tournaments, maybe including Fed Cups and everything.” She gets her tournament underway on Monday against Canadian qualifier Valerie Tetreault.

MELBOURNE – Defending champion Rafael Nadal says this year’s Australian Open is a lottery, with any one of a dozen players capable of winning. The world number two Spaniard, who beat Roger Federer here last year in a gripping five-set final, admitted he was not the favourite this time after his injury layoff, but didn’t want to say who he thought was. “We will see what happens, I don’t know,” he said. “A lot of players can win right now. I don’t want to say everybody, but like 12 players, 13 players have a good chance.” Federer is obviously one of them, as is Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, with Nikolay Davydenko the form player having beaten the Spaniard in the Qatar Open final this month. Nadal’s failure to win that tournament means he comes into the opening Grand Slam of the season without a title in eight months, with the last one coming on the Barcelona clay in April. Nadal said he hadn’t had bad results, but was just struggling to get back to winning tournaments. “I didn’t have bad results the last five months, but I didn’t have perfect results,” he said. “But I played, I was there (for) all the tournaments. Sure, it’s true, playing against the top players I didn’t have very good results, but I wasn’t playing bad. I just need a little bit more.” With injuries hampering the 23-year-old for much of last year, he faces a telling time at the Australian Open, which should provide a guide as to his current standing in men’s tennis. He insists the confidence is there, it’s just a question of once again winning a final. “The confidence? The only way to have confidence is winning matches, winning important matches. I did that in Abu Dhabi and I did that in Doha,” he said, referring to his two warm-up tour-
naments. “So I think I am in the right way. It needs a little bit more time ... but I am ready to try to play my best tennis. I think I am playing well, I think I am playing much better than what I did in the last four months.” He opens his tournament with a first round match against Australian Peter Luczak, with Briton Andy Murray looming as a possible quarter-final opponent. Nadal was not ready to look that far ahead. “I never talk about quarter-finals before getting there,” he said. “There are four matches until the quarter-finals. Button says he’s even stronger in 2010 JENSON Button thinks the struggles he endured en route to his maiden world championship crown last year will be a key factor in helping him be an even strong driver for his title defence in 2010. The new McLaren driver came through a difficult second half to last season to capture the crown in Brazil and, after admitting that he and his then Brawn GP team were too conservative in the way they went about trying to win, he says the lessons have been taken on board as he goes up against Lewis Hamilton this year.

Ducati: Retaining Stoner is priority DUCATI boss Claudio Domenicali believes his team should prioritise retaining Casey Stoner over chasing a deal with Valentino Rossi. Rossi has been linked with a switch to Ducati for 2011, especially after he intimated that Yamaha could not continue giving him and Jorge Lorenzo equal status and should nominate a clear number one. But at the launch of Ducati’s 2010 contender, Domenicali insisted that the team was not considering changing its current line-up of Stoner and Nicky Hayden - especially as he reckons Stoner is the championship’s greatest talent. “I think that Casey is talent-wise the strongest rider in the world,” said Domenicali. “Nicky gave us a wonderful lesson on life and management. Our motto is ‘never give up’ and Nicky taught us once again that we must never give up, so to think about something different with such a team is not appropriate. However it is true that our agreements are going to expire mid-season. So between my will and what is going to happen, there may be some differences.” “If it’s possible to hold on to Casey or to take Valentino, then the answer is simple: we can try. To ask a manager publicly what they would like to do is a bit embarrassing. For me if it’s a choice between one or the other, personally I have no doubt that we have the rider with the highest talent, so for me the priority is to hold on to Casey. But since the answer cannot stop here, could Casey and Valentino go well together? You would have to ask them. It’s like asking a [football] manager would they like to have Maradona and Platini in the same team, of course, why not, we would like to, but then if the wedding is successful or not, we don’t know. But the team has two strong riders and we would like this to continue, that’s quite clear.” Domenicali denied that Stoner’s mid-season illness in 2009 had given Ducati cause to doubt him. “One would have to be mad to have doubts about Casey’s skills,” he said. “It was an extremely complicated year for him. He did not un-
derstand how to solve his physical problem, and we did not understand how we could help him. We had never found ourselves in a similar situation - I’ve been working at Ducati since 1991 and managing races since ’94, so I do have a bit of experience. I’ve never found myself in a similar situation. As usual when you’re dealing with something for the first time it’s more difficult to immediately find the right approach to be able to solve it. What is important at the end of this is that today Casey is with us and is perhaps in the best shape that we have ever seen him.”

“Because we were in such a position of leading the championship by quite a few points, we were too cautious,” Button admitted on the main stage at the AUTOSPORT International Show. “We didn’t want anything to go wrong. We were too cautious for the situation, although you can say too cautious and we still ended up winning the championship. I think we should have been a little bit more aggressive with our strategy, and also myself, I should have been more aggressive.” “It was a position I had never been in before. It was something I really learned through the season, and it is amazing that you learn so much when you are fighting for a championship - a championship that is so important to you. So it was a very up and down season, and when we got to Brazil, and also a couple of races before Brazil, we realised we started to need to get aggressive again and we really had to fight for this.” He added: “It wasn’t just going to come to us. The thing is there was some negative publicity for a couple of races, but we never forgot that we had such a lead in the championship. We had a 14 point lead, and that was the worst it ever got before I won the championship, which is massive. Jenson Button The last three years have been won by one or two points, so it was a very strange position to be in knowing you had to be a little conserva-
tive and maybe when you are conservative you go too far. It is all learning curve, and you learn so much when you are in that position, and it means I come back this year so much stronger as an individual not just as a driver.” Button has reiterated his stance that the decision to move to McLaren was fuelled by the fact that he wanted a new challenge in his career. And he says the change of scene has left him hugely motivated for the forthcoming season. “It is an interesting one because people always say that after you win the world championship, are you really that hungry to achieve that again?” he said. “I have been working for 21 years to achieve my goal - but yes, I am massively hungry. When I won the world championship in Brazil I was looking for something else. I thought I have achieved what I set out to do, but what do I do now? It is a very strange situation to be in, because you should enjoy the moment but it is very, very difficult to because you are always thinking too far ahead that you have to be careful of. “I knew that moving to a new team and moving to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes would be a real challenge for me, and racing alongside Lewis, but it is a challenge I am so excited about. I am putting so much effort into making this work. This is the most important thing for me at the moment.”
