Bali News Two Malaysians arrested at Ngurah Rai Airport
As proven to commit credit card fraud Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Mobile detective unit of Denpasar Metro Police under the leadership of Chief Arif Sugiarto managed to catch two burglary perpetrators of credit card. The perpetrators were respectively named Jacky Khor, 38, and Teu Gee Huat, 44, both are residents of Malaysia. They were confined in Ngurah Rai, Tuban, last Wednesday (Jun 9) at 6:00 pm Local Time, after proven to have used fake credit card in one of the counters in Ngurah Rai Airport. Both suspects were then carried to Denpasar Metro Police Headquarters for further examination. From the hands of suspects, police could seize dozens of credit cards used as a means to break in. “Fortunately, we could move fast. If we were slightly late, they’ve escaped from our ambush. Because, he took action when they would like to go to their home country,” said Chief Arif, last Tuesday (Jun 15). According to former Chief Unit of Intelligence of Denpasar Metro Police, the suspects used a fake credit card. They pretended to do shopping in a place by means of such credit card. After taking action, they would immediately flee to their home country. “At that time, they have paid boarding pass, but were still waiting for departure time,” he told reporters last Tuesday. Capturing process of the suspects began with the existence of a report from witness having initial name Ni SS. This witness was
the owner of one of the counters in Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban. Previously, the two suspects did shopping at her counter by purchasing four Blueberries brand shirts. “The suspect paid by fake credit cards they carried. However, the transaction was successful then,” said Chief Arif. Successful transaction made by the suspects was then resumed with purchasing other more expensive articles. The article purchased was Omega watch. Price of the watch was IDR 126 million. Since they had agreed to price offered the suspects were trying to pay it again by the credit card. “Well, this time, the credit card did not work. The card was rejected by the machine when swiped. Witnesses began to suspect when knowing the condition,” he explained. Even, when cross-checked to the bank, the bank said it was a fake credit card. Finally, the witness reported the incident to Denpasar Metro Police and some members consequently came down to the crime scene. Without re-
sistance, the two suspects were confined and interrogated. “They admitted their evil deeds. Even, when both suspects were searched, police found dozens of credit cards,” he added. Moreover, it was explained that from the suspect Jacky Khor police seized 10 counterfeit credit cards. Meanwhile, from the suspect Teu Gee Huat, police seized nine credit cards belonging to Capital One and HSBC. In addition to fake credit cards, police also secured a passport of Malaysia and Singapore. “With the discovery of evidence in the form of passports we suspected the perpetrators are of international credit card fraud,” he explained. However, his party remained to deepen continuously an intensive examination of the suspects. So far, based on the examination it was known about their journey. They have traveled passing through a number of countries including, Indonesia (Tanjung Balai Karimun in Riau Islands), Thailand and Taiwan. “We still continue to develop the case,” added Chief Arif. ing. The ritual included procession of cutting umpang/pantak pemarang to welcome the great guest who is visiting their village. In this session, a Culture Agency Bali Province official was asked to join on stage as the great guest. The procession went attractive and gave a thick religious-magic ‘aroma’. Seems not to know exhaustion, the Dayak dancers community moved lively and dynamically. The dancers were supported by five pairs of young adult dancers and added with some supporters from Bali. The main performance was di-
vided into 5 episodes that are connected to each other. It began with an evil spirit (kamang) disturbing the umpang cutting scene which is for welcoming the great guest to their village. To guarantee the guest’s safety, a spiritual person boren (healer) cleanse the village from evil spirits. Then, large gong dance and little gong dance combined with Dayak bujang (young adults) hunting scene in a great dessert with sumpit weapon, a Dayak weapon. Two defendants Agus Guntomo aka Black Sweet and Ngatemin allegedly involved in burglary of Automatic Teller Machines (ATM), each sentenced 18 months in prison, on trial at Denpasar District Court, Tuesday (15 / 6) yesterday. Second perpetrator convicted of a criminal act deliberately providing an opportunity or means to do theft, as stipulated in article 362 of the Penal Code article 56 jo figures 2e of the Criminal Code. The judges who fronted Sigit Sutanto, SH, states are not reason to abolish the act of forgiving the defendant. Hence the punishment 18 months in prison, the defendant traveled very reasonable. From Roby skimmer installed, then obtained a customer data subsequently used to make counterfeit ATM cards. In addition to install the skimmer, Roby also tasked with customers’ money thresh Suhadi Lumanto (defendant in separate files). Both defendants also admitted to not live in Bali. Related commissions, both defendants admitted getting a monthly salary of Henry. Ngatemin paid Rp 5 million per month, while Agus USD 2 million. Which interestingly turned out before police arrested the two defendants admitted they give you money in large quantities by Henry. Ngatemin admitted given money USD 23 million, while the defendant Agus awarded USD 20 million. According Ngatemin, money has been used. Such matter was seen from the incident of snatching within the jurisdiction of Denpasar Metro Police, precisely around Jalan Drupadi, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung. An Australian tourist, Rosemary Elepitick, 52, was mugged by criminals at the crime scene, last Sunday (Jun 13) night. As a result, a number of her valuables worth tens of millions were successfully taken away by perpetrator. This case was immediately reported to Denpasar Metro Police. However, until now, perpetrators are still being chased by police. Although a number of witnesses had been examined, but police had not yet found any clues about the perpetrator. “This case is being handled by police,” said one of the officers, last Tuesday (Jun 15). According to this officer, the victim who stayed at the Hotel Uma Sapna Gang XX, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung, crossed on the scene at 10:30 pm Local Time. While crossing on foot, the victim never had a feeling of suspicion that
she would experience the action of mugging. “Once arrived on scene, suddenly there were two perpetrators riding a motorcycle and approached the victim,” he explained. As fast as the speed of lightning, the evil hands of perpetrators grabbed the victim’s bag. In carrying out their action, one of the perpetrators served as executor, while another as a jockey. Although the victim had screamed to call out, the perpetrators could escape and their tracks disappeared in the darkness of the night. “Because of panic, the victim did not get to see the identity of the perpetrator’s motorcycle, especially its license plate,” he said while asking not to mention his name on the newspaper. The goods of victim grabbed consisted of cash worth IDR 2 million, a credit card, an Apple handphone, a Bvlgari glasses, cosmetics, tools and a number of other essential goods. If the goods were calculated materially, the victim claimed to suffer a loss amounted to IDR 20 million in total. “The report of victim is being investigated, including the pursuit of perpetrators,” he said. Rainy Season Caused Planting Difficulties for Tobacco Farmers Gianyar (Bali Post)-
Pouring rain has caused tobacco farmers at Gianyar region having difficulties in growing new plants. The rain has damaged the plants so there will be fewer to be grown. Last Tuesday (15/6), it was discovered some of the plants at Gelumpang, Sukawati, Gianyar seems damaged by the rain during the planting process. The plants went rotten so it won’t grow. This has confused the farmers as the plantlet prepared and hoped to be grown are damaged instead. It also caused the planting season to be delayed. Head of Agriculture Agency Gianyar Region, Engineer (Ir.) I Gusti Ngurah Puja Wartika, confirmed this situation has happened. It is worrying the farmers but it can be fixed as there are still some plantlets owned by them. “The tobacco
plants are very risky with water, so it caused the farmers having difficulties,” The Head of Agriculture explained. Total of tobacco planting in Gianyar reached 300 hectares. The tobacco farmers in this region are at Gelumpang area (Sukawati), Payangan and Tegallalang. From the three sub districts, most of the farmers are in Sukawati. It was mentioned, Gianyar region government has a plan to develop this tobacco farming further. Moreover, now there’s cigarette tax income given to Gianyar region. Archeological protection in Bali and the role of the society Archeological protection through maintenance, preservation and conservation, even through reconstruction as well, has turned to be an international problem not only today, but actually in the future. Such matters were indicated by the activities of UNESCO as an international institution, who concerned with the most important of world cultural heritage e.g. archeological remains. UNESCO have done a lot of excellent work, which need a reasonable budgets, expert, equipment etc. and the best example is the safeguarding of Brobudur temple. As the UNESCO member, our governments are concerned and responsible to protect our monuments for our national interest, such as Brobudur temple. Based on the development of archaeological studies and the related studies especially in field of archaeological protection, now such problems is a technical matter and besed on scientific consideration. Facing such problem , Indonesian government have done a number of works e.g the safeguarding of borobudur tample {in cooperation with {UNESCO}, Prambanan tample ,Demak mosque, and other tamples in Bali namely Pura Besakih ,Pura Mengening , Pura Pegulingan , Pura Taman Sari etc. In this case, our government as one of the ASEAN countries have carried out a coordinate programmers through SPAFA (Sub project of archaeology and fine art) to find out the effective ways and means dealing with the problems of archaeological protection . Discussing the archaeological protection in Bali, it should be remembered that Bali, even a very small island, but has a lot of archaeo-
logical monuments, which most of them belonged to living monuments. Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the whole island, as well as Hindu stastues , inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious function Officially, archaeological protection in Bali is done by Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage (Kantor Bali Suaka peninggelang Sejarah dan Purbakala Bali) in coordialnation and corporation with the local government and local people as well. This office have done a lot of archaeological reconstruction, but not yet covered the whole of them, because of the limited budgets etc. In case of protecting the archaeological monuments in Bali, Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage has given a technical guidance to the local people for reconstructing their monuments and financial support as well. As the governments have a very limited budget for these works, and as the owner of the living monuments, so the Balinese people have their religious tasks and responsibility to protect sacred monuments. In Bali generally each village have three village temples named Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.g Pura Puseh,Pura Desa (sometime combined with Pura Bale Agung ) and Pura dalem. Among them are belonged to archaeological monuments and frequently in these temple a number of archaeological monuments are preserved such as statues, inscription etc. It is important to note here that the unity of the Balinese society is tightly bounded by the village temples and
social organization. Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has been developed since the early time until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today. Therefore these facts indicated that the Balinese people from time to time have played important role for protecting their archeological monuments, for worshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as their local deities. It is hoped that this religious traditions should be keep in people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for the safeguarding the archeological monuments and its cultural values. Through this way it is hoped that our cultural identity could be preserved in the people’s mind for facing the forthcoming modern world. (BTN)

Sudan rebel leaders surrender to warcrimes court Agence France Presse
THE HAGUE – Two Sudan rebel leaders arrived in The Hague on Wednesday after surrendering to the International Criminal Court to answer to accusations of war crimes in Darfur, the court said. “Abdallah Banda Abakaer Nourain and Saleh Mohammed Jerbo Jamus, both suspected of having committed war crimes in Darfur, Sudan, arrived voluntarily this morning at the International Criminal Court,” a statement said. “Both suspects will stay at the location assigned to them by the court until their first appearance before the chamber” Thursday morning, after which they would be free to leave the Netherlands pending further appearances. The men face three counts of war crimes allegedly committed in an attack on the Haskanita military base in north Darfur on September 29, 2007, that killed 12 African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) peacekeepers and injured eight. The attack was allegedly carried out by fighters of the Sudanese Liberation Army-Unity under the command of Jerbo, and splinter forces of the Justice and Equality Movement led by Banda. “It is alleged that the attackers, numbering approximately 1,000, were armed with anti-aircraft guns, artillery guns and rocket propelled grenade launchers,” said the court statement. “During and after the attack, they allegedly destroyed AMIS communi-
cations installations, dormitories, vehicles and other materials and appropriated AMIS property, including refrigerators, computers, cellular phones, military boots and uniforms, 17 vehicles, fuel, ammunition and money.” A pre-trial chamber had found there were reasonable grounds to believe that Band and Jerbo were criminally responsible for murder, an intentional attack on peacekeepers, and pillaging, said the statement. Summonses for the men to appear were issued under seal in August last year. Arrest warrants were not considered necessary. The court said the men would make an initial appearance on Thursday, during which they will be informed of the allegations and of their rights. A further hearing will be held “within a reasonable time” to confirm the charges against the two — a requirement before the case can go to trial. Their appearance at this “confirmation of charges hearing” was not obligatory. The case is the fourth before the ICC involving alleged warcrimes in Darfur. Arrest warrants are outstanding for Sudan’s President Omar al-Beshir, former government minister Ahmed Haroun and militia leader Ali Kosheib.

State TV’s website quotes Vice President Ali Akbar Salehi as saying Wednesday the new reactor will be more powerful than the aging, 5megawatt U.S.-made research reactor operating in Tehran that is used to make radioactive isotopes for medical purposes. He says Iran eventually plans to build four such reactors. Iran’s first energy-producing reactor is scheduled to begin operations this summer. Last week, the U.N. imposed sanctions over Iran’s refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a process that can be used to fuel nuclear power plants or make nuclear weapons.

Afghan leader faces tough questions on Japan trip Agence France Presse
TOKYO – Afghan President Hamid Karzai was set to face tough questions over governance and corruption from one of his country’s major aid donors as he began a five-day visit to Japan on Wednesday. Japan last year pledged up to five billion dollars in aid over five years until 2013, provided the security situation allows projects to go ahead and contingent on guarantees the assistance will not be lost to graft. It is Karzai’s fourth trip to Japan, and his first since he won his second presidential term last November in elections widely criticised as marred by ballot-stuffing and vote-rigging. He flew in late Wednesday ahead of talks Thursday with Japan’s new Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, which will focus on improvement of security and the wider development of the war-torn and dirt-poor central Asian nation. “The quality of governance needs to be improved,” Japanese foreign ministry press secretary Kazuo Kodama told AFP. “We do have sympathy for his challenges, but at the same time, in order for his government... to really succeed in addressing all these challenges, he has got to put his government in order,” Kodama said. “So I think Prime Minister Kan and Foreign Minister Okada will certainly look forward to discussing these issues in a candid, straight-forward manner.” Kabul said Karzai was travelling with his foreign and finance ministers, as well as national security advisor Rangeen Dadfar Spanta. Japan has been one of our key allies. It has been among key contributors to Afghanistan’s reconstruction,” Karzai spokesman Hamid Elmi told AFP. “They have pledged a new fund of five billion dollars over five years. The trip is a four-day trip, which in itself shows that Japan and this visit is important for the president.” Japanese aid has built 650 kilometres (400 miles) of highway and a new Kabul airport terminal, and its city planners are working to redevelop the capital, where more than 100 Japanese buses are now providing public transport. Of the aid package pledged last year, about 980 million dollars have been disbursed, including more than 300 million dollars to pay the wages of Afghanistan’s 80,000 police officers, Japanese officials say.
Other Japanese aid projects in the works are vocational training and small-scale rural aid projects that would help former Taliban foot-soldiers give up their arms and earn a living in civil society. Massive graft, however, threatens to undermine many international aid projects. Watchdog Transparency International says Afghanistan has the worst corruption of any country except Somalia, which has no functional government. Kodama said Japan’s foreign minister had repeatedly stressed that “this money comes from our taxpayers’ pockets, and the government needs to be accountable for the way their money will have been spent. Money must be spent in an efficient and effective manner to meet the declared objectives.” Karzai’s visit comes days after US officials said Afghanistan has mineral deposits worth at least one trillion dollars, including iron, copper, cobalt, gold and lithium.
Landslide death toll hits 53 in Bangladesh Associated Press Writer
COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh – Rescuers recovered four more bodies buried in mud Wednesday, raising the death toll from powerful landslides in southeastern Bangladesh to 53. Triggered by heavy rains, the powerful mudslides struck a coastal area Tuesday, burying thatched homes and cutting off thousands in the southern coastal district of Cox’s Bazar and the nearby district of Bandarban. At least 49 bodies were recovered Tuesday, mostly from two areas in Cox’s Bazar, 185 miles (296 kilometers) south of the capital, Dhaka, in a hilly and forested region near the border with Myanmar. The bodies of three children — two boys and one girl — were found overnight, and a missing soldier killed by the slides was also pulled from the mud, said Mohammad Jasim Uddin,
a magistrate in Cox’s Bazar. Another five soldiers’ bodies were recovered Tuesday. They were assigned to a makeshift camp that was buried by mud.
About 500 people left homeless after Tuesday’s disaster have taken refuge at five shelters in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf area, bordering Myanmar, said local official Shafik Mia.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Jonathan Metz had his left arm stuck in his furnace boiler for about 12 hours when he asked himself “what would MacGyver do?” and concluded that amputating the limb was his only chance for survival. The 31-year-old West Hartford man, who was released from the hospital Monday, met with reporters Tuesday for the first time since getting his arm stuck in his furnace for two days and nearly cutting it off. Metz, who is right-handed, said when the thought of amputation first crossed his mind he pushed it away. He considered every other option and thought of the resourceful 1980s television character who always found a way to use mundane objects in his surroundings to get himself out of tough situations. “I definitely dithered for a few hours after coming up with the initial idea,” he said. “I thought there must be some other way, so I kind of started looking around my surroundings again. Maybe there was something I missed. You know, what would MacGyver do if he were here?” Metz said he spent six hours psyching himself up for the self-amputation. He tried to yank the arm out, he used dirty oil from a catch basin to try to grease it and finally he looked to his tool box, which he had within reach. His fantasy, he said, was that he could cut off the arm, run upstairs and
put it in his freezer, call 911, then go to the hospital and get it reattached. Metz said he first used a hacksaw blade, then used a larger blade, which he hoped would make the operation go smoother. He nearly succeeded but couldn’t make it through a bundle of nerves. “I don’t know how many strokes it took,” he said. “But it was quite a few. So yes, every one, I was reevaluating in some way, was it too late to stop? Or what was the point where there was no going back?” Metz, who lives alone, revealed Tuesday that the ordeal began after work on Monday night, June 7, not the day before, as doctors previously had said. He had been trying to clean off the heating vents on his furnace boiler when he dropped either a brush or a Shop-Vac attachment. He was reaching in to retrieve it when his arm became stuck between the funnel-like fins of the boiler. When he tried to pull it out, the fins tightened on his arm, cutting into it. The more he would struggle, the more it would cut, and the more his arm would swell. “It very quickly became apparent to me that I had a major problem,” he said. “I basically spent the next 12 hours screaming for help.” Eventually, he began noticing signs of infection and the smell of rotting flesh, and he starting thinking he had to cut the arm off. Doctors said the partial self-amputation prevented the spread of the infection to the rest of his body and saved his life.

MANOKWARI – A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least two people and damaged scores of homes in eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami warning and widespread panic. The victims were believed to have been crushed under their collapsed homes on Yapen island, close to the epicentre off the northern coast of Papua province, police said. “Two people were killed on the island because of the quake. We’re still collecting information about the damage,” Yapen police chief Deny Siregar told AFP. The quake struck off the southeast coast of Yapen at 12:16 pm (0316
GMT), officials said. It was the second of a series of strong tremors that were felt across a vast but sparsely populated region. Yapen island, with a population of about 70,000 people, appeared to be the worst-hit area with one church destroyed and at least 150 homes damaged, police said. “The situation now is still tense. Many people remained outside as a series of powerful aftershocks shook the region, some as strong as 6.6 in magnitude. The vast Indonesian archipelago stretches from the Pacific to the Indian oceans and straddles major seismic faultlines that trigger thousands of quakes a year.
The 2004 Asian tsunami killed at least 168,000 people in Indonesia alone when the sea surged over the northern tip of Sumatra island after a 9.3-magnitude quake split the seabed to the west. A 7.6-magnitude quake killed about 1,000 people in the port of Padang, western Sumatra, in September last year. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit northern Sumatra in April but caused no significant damage. Scientists cannot predict when the next major earthquake will hit Indonesia but they say it is only a matter of time before another catastrophe on the same or even greater scale as 2004 strikes the archipelago again.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police arrested Afghan man Sayeed Abbas at a hotel in Jakarta last month, the country’s most senior officer in charge of transnational crime revealed today. Brigadier General Saud Usman Nasution said Abbas was one of 87 people smugglers Indonesia has arrested so far this year. The vast majority have been lowranking Indonesian crew members. But Australian sources describe Abbas, now in a Jakarta jail, as an “extremely significant” catch. The Attorney-General’s Department has
requested his extradition. The extradition must be approved by an Indonesian court and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono before it can proceed, meaning it is unlikely to occur for at least a year. But if Abbas is ultimately convicted in Australia he could face up to 20 years in prison. Also last month, an Indonesian court jailed notorious Pakistani people smuggler Haji Sakhi for more than two years for immigration offences. Australia has also requested Sakhi’s extradition but will now have to wait until his jail term expires.
One alleged people smuggler - dual Iraqi-Iranian man Hadi Ahmadi - was successfully extradited from Indonesia to Australia last year and is now facing trial in Perth. Two others - Amanullah Rezaie and Sajjad Hussain Noor - remain in Jakarta jails awaiting extradition. Mr Nasution said Indonesia had also detained 1,247 asylum seekers so far this year, a marked increase on previous years. JAKARTA – Authorities have recovered the carcass of a Javan Rhinoceros, world’s most endangered mammal, in a national park in Indonesia, the second found dead in less than a month, a conservationist said Tuesday. The remains were discovered Monday in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java island, said Widodo Ramono, head of the Indonesian Rhino Foundation. The exact cause of the death will be investigated, but like the first carcass retrieved May 20, there were no indications that poachers were involved, Ramono said. “It seems that it died naturally, because there were no signs of it being poisoned or killed. Its horn is
still intact,” he said. The animal was believed to be around 30 years old. The life span of the mammals, of which there are an estimated 45 to 60 left in the world, is 30-45 years. He described the deaths as a serious blow to efforts to conserve the world’s smallest rhino species. “The two deaths meant 4 percent of the estimated number of the rhino population, whereas the government has set a growth (rate of) 3 percent,” Ramono said. Workers will be collecting footage from 58 camera-traps in the park, about 90 miles (144 kilometers) southwest of Jakarta, this month to try to get a better estimate of the number of rhinos remaining, Ramono said.

DENPASAR– The Sidakamoyako art group from Tokyo, Japan will perform a contemporary wayang or puppet show entitled “Ikkaku Sennin” in the 32nd annual Bali Art Festival (BAF). I Kadek Suardana, the head of Arti Foundation, said “the Ikkaku Sennin show is very popular in Japan.” The art group from Japan will perform in Ayodya stage in Art Center Denpasar on Sunday, June 27th 2010 at 8 pm local time. The show is about a priest named Ikaku Sennin. He is very powerful so he can fight the dragon and can prevent rain from failing. In Japanese tradition, Dragon is believed as the rain giver especially to the farmer in Japan. The Sidakamoyako consist of Minagawa Koichi, Koyano Ketauro, Umeda Hideharu, Kawamura Kohei, Hamahoto Tomoyuki, Nina Masahiro,
Yamagiahi Tempei and Yamashito Miho. Suardana said that the wayang performance will be entirely played by the member of Sidakamoyako. There is great hope that the new show will give new perspective and entertain the people in Bali. The show will use the development of technology such as computerizes images and sounds. Suardana who facilitate the Sidakamoyako with the committee of the BAF, said that the cooperation is going well and there is great hope that the show will run successfully. “The Balinese should watch the show because Bali also has many wayang performances. The audiences can see the differences between the show from Japan and our own,” he added. There is also other group from Japan who take part in the event, it is “Wyarhita”. Tabanan was no less luring with its angklung kekebyaran composed in slendro tone with contemporary style. Both gamelan troupes seemingly attempted to make innovation for the kekebyaran composition so that the angklung gamelan music was no longer limited for the use in ceremonies like Pitri Yajña and Manusha Yadñya but also managed to look attractive for accompaniment of the dance creations. At the performance thronged by myriad of audiences, the Widya Asrama Angklung Troupe displayed angklung keklentangan style composed by I Nyoman Sukarwa and Made Santa. It was then resumed with gamelan creation of the envoy of Buleleng — Werdhi Ulangun Angklung Troupe showing the composition entitled Bhuwana Kertha under direction of Gede Madu. Aside from presenting gamelan creations, each troupe also introduced two dances. In the meantime, the envoy of Tabanan opened its session by Sunari welcoming dance describing the tenderness and beauty of nature when facing the morning time. Then, envoy of Buleleng presented Suitabangkaja opening dance that was danced by six beautiful virgins. As the ultimate session, both angklung troupes terminated their session by closing dance. ”Bulan Pejeng” “Bulan Pejeng” in fact is a large bronze drum (nekara) of prehistoric from Bronze Age that were developed around 2000 years ago or in the beginning of century. This cultural heritage is one of the sacred article, kept in Penataran Sasih Temple in Pejeng Village, Gianyar and is located in the main street of TampaksiringKintamani so no difficulty to visit it. According to popular folktale in society, “Bulan Pejeng” is the “moon” which fell down in Pejeng Village long time ago, making the village was always bright on day and night so the thieves could not do their jobs. Therefore, the “moon” was urinated so did not shine anymore until these days. The name of Penataran Sasih Temple means “the place of the moon” Temple (moon=sasih) and might relate to the story of the “moon” fell from the sky previously. Another story told of this Pejeng nekara as the ear-plug of Kebo Iwa, a powerful legendary figure who was able to carve Goa Gajah, steep bank temple of Gunung Kawi, etc. The Pejeng nekara has been introduced internationally by G.E. Rumphius, an expert in Biology through his book Amboinsche Rariteitkamer, published in 1705. Although he never been to Bali, but he had succeeded for using the information from Hendrik Leydekereker ’s. In fact, this nekara is a giant nekara with large size in every detail as in height of
186.5 m and a diameter of 1.60 m for its hit zone. Around the archeological experts, this nekara is also called as nekara with head, because it has four pairs of mask decoration with bulged-out eyes, long-coned nose, and the ears wearing earrings made from coins. The decoration of the mask is not only functioned as esthetic-decorative, but more for magical symbolism for the ancestors’ symbol of magic power which bring prosperity and protect the family or the society from any danger. Another decoration which has the magical symbolism is the decoration of octagonal star on the hit zone, border design, feather, and so on. “Bulan Pejeng” is a masterpiece work of technology and metallurgy that reached its peak on Bronze Age. This cultural heritage is a significant mixture between modern and complicated metal technology and art creativity which full magical symbolism values as can be seen from its shape and patterns. All of it is the proof of a local Balinese wisdom in its spectacular work about 2000 years ago, far before India reached Bali. The dynamism of Balinese wisdom at that time also was proved by finding five stone moulds in Manuaba Village, Gianyar for making smaller nekara from Pejeng nekara. This fact has proved enough that Balinese people had succeeded in developing local metal industry. Clay mould for making arrow head also has been found in West Java. In ad-
dition, Balinese people had produced a stone nekara which is kept in a temple in Carangsari Village (Badung), is now another success of Balinese wisdom. The other bronze nekara in Pacung, Ularan (Buleleng), Ban (Karangasem), Manikliyu (Bangli), Peguyangan (Badung) is a proof that local metal industry in Bali reached its top. According to the results of archeological research can be known that at Bronze Age, megalithic tradition was also developed around the world. The archeological experts have a notion that Bali was inhabited by megalithic society who lived by farming, stayed in organized village, and ruled by a well-respected figure. The society had mastered the technology and metallurgy art and the life which was more advance required the capability and mastery in specific parts in the society. In the next progression, social-functional groups emerged and developed such as leader group, carpentry and blacksmith group who have special ability, spiritual group who organize and perform any ritual, and the society who has no special ability who work for other groups. At that time, in the society was grown the belief to the ancestors or the leaders who live at the top of a mountain or a hill and they had magical power that could protect the people from any danger. This belief really influenced daily life and to this very day still appears in the life of Indonesian.

(Rice Flour Cake with Palm Sugar) Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked. Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated. Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve.
Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. BUSINESS Spanish unions call general strike

MADRID – Unions angry over labor market reform plans called Spain’s first general strike in nearly a decade — but not until after the summer vacation — breaking Tuesday with a Socialist government desperate to restore confidence among investors wary of its debt-laden finances. Union leaders said the hiring-and-firing changes in the labor market favor businesses, not workers, as they announced the Sept. 29 walkout. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who has touted his close ties with organized labor since taking power in 2004, has “changed lanes” in his strategy for fighting an economic crisis marked by a 20 percent jobless rate, said Candido Mendez, leader of UGT, Spain’s largest labor federation. Among other things, the reforms are expected to make it easier and cheaper for money-losing companies to lay people off, although they also include nods to unions, such as making it more expensive for companies to give workers temporary contracts with few benefits. “We have witnessed the collapse of the political discourse of the current government,” Mendez told a news conference. The government says reforms are essential to encourage companies to hire and chip away at unemployment, stimulating an economy which only just crawled out of nearly two years of recession. The government’s hefty outlays on unemployment benefits, other social spending and economic stimulus measures
have fueled an outsized deficit that has caused investors and markets to fret that Spain might eventually have trouble financing its operations and need a bailout like Greece did. Spanish business leaders complain that the current law discourages them from hiring people to full-blown contracts because if they have to be laid off, they are entitled to severance pay of as much as 45 days per year worked — one of the richest deals in Europe. So a third of the Spanish work force has to settle for temporary, so-called “garbage contracts” for as little as a few months and with little severance pay. The proportion is one of Europe’s highest, and the vast majority of people laid off in Spain during the recession had them. The government reportedly wants to lower the severance number from 45 to 33 days for some contracts. Under pressure from opposition parties, which almost defeated a deficit-reducing austerity package last month, Zapatero’s government announced a concession Monday: rather than submit the labor reforms to Parliament for a yesor-no vote allowing for no amendments, it is now willing to negotiate changes, although not right away. The reform package is expected to be approved in a Cabinet meeting Wednes-
day, and submitted to Parliament for a vote June 22. If passed, the reforms would take effect right away. But then Parliament would undertake debate on changes and vote again, and the initial decree would be adapted to reflect any amendments. This could take a few months. Spain’s last general strike was in 2002 against a center-right government, and also was triggered by labor market reforms. While Zapatero has taken pride in his tight relations with unions, the harsh reality of recession has forced him to renounce pledges he maintained until just a few weeks ago, such as promising not to cut social spending or public sector wages. The unions scheduled the strike for three months from now, after a civil servants walkout last week against pay cuts drew little support. The Sept. 29 date coincides with a series of Europe-wide rallies against austerity cuts. Mendez said the date was also “opportune” because Spaniards would also know more other planned reforms that might delay their retirement age from 65 to 67, and about the government’s 2011 budget, which might feature even more austerity.

LONDON – Shares in BP PLC fluctuated in London trading Wednesday ahead of what promises to be a tense meeting between the oil company’s chairman and U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington. Obama has vowed to make BP pay for all of the damage caused by its leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico, and has demanded that the company set up an independently controlled fund to assure that it will pay. “I will meet with the chairman of BP and inform him that he is to set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company’s recklessness,” Obama said in an address from the White House on Tuesday. That idea has been kicking around for a while, and Obama’s statement didn’t rattle the markets. BP shares initially fell 0.6 percent as

An Associated Press-GfK poll released Tuesday found 52 percent of those surveyed don’t approve of Obama’s handling of the spill, but 83 percent disapprove of BP’s performance. BP said Tuesday it had approved initial payments on 90 percent of commercial large loss claims filed so far. The 337 checks totaled $16 million for businesses that had filed claims of more than $5,000, BP said. The company added that it has issued approximately 25,000 checks totaling $63 million to cover small and large claims, and expects the total to rise to $85 million by the end of the week. BP, which earned a profit of $6.1 billion in the first three months of this year, says it has spent in excess of $1.4 billion so far in attempts to stop the flow of oil billowing up from the seabed. On June 3, the company announced it had set up a $360 million escrow account to pay for the construction of six sections of Louisiana barrier islands approved by the U.S. government.
LAS VEGAS – Retailers strive for the perfect mix of products that will boost sales and keep costs down — but the experience of some, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc, in pruning merchandise shows that getting the recipe just right, can be tricky business. More than 40 percent of retailers reduced the number of different items, or SKUs, on their shelves in 2009 and nearly the same number expect to make additional cuts, according to a survey released by the Nielsen Co on Tuesday. Limiting the product assortment can help retailers like Walmart and drugstore giant Walgreen Co and grocers Kroger Co and Supervalu Inc (SVU.N) cut costs, but the risk is that shoppers will take their money elsewhere if they are unable to find an item. “The message to retailers is to choose carefully when it comes to deciding which products to trim,” Stuart Taylor, Nielsen’s vice president of custom analytics, said at the market research firm’s Consumer 360 conference in Las Vegas. “There aren’t a lot of rules of the road,” said Taylor, who called SKU reduction a process, rather than a onetime event. “At the end of the day, everything is a trade off,” said Chris Shaw, HJ Heinz Co’s (HNZ.N) senior manager of client business planning, who works with retailers tweaking their selection. According to Nielsen, 7 percent of shoppers who did not find the personal-care item they were looking for said they would leave a store without buying an item in the category. More importantly, some shoppers said they would leave without buying anything. If just 0.5 percent of grocery shoppers were to leave a store without making a purchase, the lost sales would equal as much as $1.5 billion, according to Nielsen, which sells products and services to help retailers finesse assortment. Most consumers haven’t yet noticed that overall assortment is down about 1 percent, Taylor said, adding that just over one-third of shoppers polled by Nielsen actually said they were seeing product variety increase. The stakes are high in the grocery arena, where retailers are battling to offer the lowest prices to consumers who are suffering from continued joblessness. Supervalu Chief Executive Craig Herkert has said the company plans to pare SKUs in some categories by as much as 25 percent. Kroger, which already has trimmed its selection of breakfast cereals, is believed to be undertaking similar efforts, though its executives have remained tightlipped about their plans. Walmart is the highest-profile retailer to have gone public with the pain associated with clearing the wrong items from shelves. When it reported fourth-quarter results in February, Walmart said its program to overhaul stores hurt sales as shoppers adjusted to new layouts and product selections. The world’s biggest retailer, which last year got almost half of its U.S. sales from the grocery category, removed slower-selling items and replaced them with faster-selling or more popular products as part of a store remodeling program. In March, Walmart said it returned roughly 300 items to U.S. stores after executives said the retailer “disappointed” customers by not stocking them. The company found that not offering particular sizes or flavors of some foods sent some shoppers elsewhere, even if the missing item was a one-pound bag of brown rice.

LOS ANGELES – Randy Jackson, brother of the late pop legend Michael Jackson, was hospitalized Tuesday in Southern California. Jackson, 48, experienced chest pains around noon on Tuesday and was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where he is currently awaiting the outcome of tests, a source close to the Jackson family who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly said. The source told The Associated Press that doctors at the hospital think it was a mild heart attack, but this has not yet been confirmed. On Monday, Randy Jackson was in court with his family for a hearing in the involuntary manslaughter case of Dr. Conrad Murray who is accused in connection with Michael Jackson’s death. Randy Jackson arrived after everyone else and stopped to hug his
parents, his brothers and sister LaToya before the hearing began. Last week, he made an appearance on CNN’s “Newsroom” and expressed the opinion that Murray should be charged with first-degree murder. He also said he thought others were implicated in Michael’s death. In a series of posts on Twitter in the last few weeks, Randy Jackson said he had succeeded in stopping an unapproved tribute show to Michael in Rome which had been scheduled on June 25, the anniversary of his death. He said he also had been talking to officials at Forest Lawn Glendale in an effort to have fans admitted to the area near Jackson’s tomb on the anniversary. He said in his posts that the fans had been a great source of comfort to him. “At times, I’m sad & broken,” he tweeted. “But ur supprt helps 2 encourage me and fuel my motivation 2 continue this fight 4 truth&justice.”

Review: ‘Toy Story 3’ builds a virtual playground Associated Press Writer
When I was a kid, they didn’t make video games based on movies. But if you wanted to relive, say, “Star Wars,” you could buy the action figures. If you didn’t have all the dolls, you could recruit substitutes: GI Joe could fill in for Darth Vader, Barbie could understudy Princess Leia, and you could make C-3PO and R2-D2 out of Legos. In 2010, just about every childfriendly blockbuster is accompanied by a video game. But since they’re usually straightforward rehashes of the movies, most games don’t capture that childhood spirit, which is really about creating new adventures for beloved characters. “Toy Story 3” (Disney Interactive, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, $49.99) comes closer to that feeling than any movie-based game before it. On one level, it does deliver a recap of the film. The familiar Pixar toys have been left behind by their owner, Andy, and embark on a mission to get him to play with them one last time. The result is a betterthan-average romp, with Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jessie run-
ning and jumping through levels based on the new film’s settings. Some of these story sequences may be a little too challenging for younger children, even with the generous hints turned on. And some of them drag on much longer than you’d expect: One sequence, which begins in a flooded bedroom and ends in outer space, took me more than an hour to get through, which is beyond the attention span of most kids I know. But there’s another level to “Toy Story 3” that’s likely to satisfy players of any age, from 8-year-olds to geezers like me. It’s called the Toy Box, and it’s as clever an approach to the material as you could imagine. It’s an open-world playground that starts off as a dusty Wild West town.
Any one of the three main characters can be sheriff, and other “Toy Story” regulars, like Slinky Dog and Hamm the piggy bank, give you missions. You can ignore their demands — undoubtedly, some kids will be happy just roaming around and decorating their towns — but success at missions earns you the gold you need to buy new buildings or attract new residents. Wherever you go in the Toy Box, they’re something new to do. You can herd cattle. You can drive a racecar. You can explore a haunted mansion. If there’s anything you daydreamed about when you were a child, odds are that developer Avalanche Software has stuck it in here. Weirdly enough, the one game the Toy Box reminded me of was another Wild West adventure, Rockstar Games’ recent smash “Red Dead Redemption” — minus all the prostitutes and corpses. Like “RDR,” “Toy Story 3” delivers a wide-open landscape of seemingly endless possibilities. It’s one of the most adventurous movie games ever created, and it’s a delight. Three-and-a-half stars out of four.

As rates of age-related dementia and Alzheimer’s disease have continued to rise in the U.S. - largely because Americans are living longer and the over-65 population has swelled to record highs - researchers have worked relentlessly to understand the causes of these mind-robbing diseases and to help prevent or slow their progression. To clarify the state of the current evidence and offer physicians clearer treatment guidelines, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in early 2009 commissioned a detailed analysis of existing studies, covering 165 papers published between 1984 and 2009. (See how to prevent illness at any age.) The resulting analysis of the find-
ings, along with the NIH consensus statement based on the results, published Monday, are somewhat surprisingly and disappointingly contrary to what has become common medical practice for Alzheimer’s prevention. For years, the prevailing hypothesis has been “Use it or lose it” when it comes to avoiding gradual age-related mental decline. Data has associated behaviors such as keeping the mind actively engaged throughout life, staying physically active, eating certain foods and supplementing the diet with specific vitamins and nutrients with lower rates of dementia in old age. These lifestyle factors appeared to limit cognitive decline of various kinds, from occasional “senior moments” to the more serious episodes of cognitive impairment that can be a prelude to Alzheimer’s disease.
Now researchers at Duke University report in the current issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine that the data on the preventive effects of lifestyle factors is not as strong as they had thought. Led by Brenda Plassman, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, the study authors analyzed decades’ worth of research, including observational studies in which scientists looked retrospectively at a group of participants to tease out associations between certain behaviors (like exercise) and selected effects (like scores on tests of memory and cognitive skills), as well as the more definitive clinical trials that randomly assign volunteers to intervention or control groups and then assess how the intervention affects cognitive ability.

JOHANNESBURG – Five-time World Cup winners Brazil opened their South Africa 2010 campaign with a workmanlike 2-1 win over Asian minnows North Korea on Tuesday. D e spite an attacking l i n e boasting Kaka and Robinho, the South Americans had to work hard to break down dogged defending as the North Koreans worked tirelessly. After a resilient first half, the North Korean defence finally cracked as Maicon scored from the tightest of angles before Galatasaray’s Elano made sure of victory with the second goal in the Group G clash. Brazil coach Dunga said he was not entirely happy with the result, but welcomed the three points with Ivory Coast and Portugal still to come. “I believe the first match is always trying, there was a lot of nervousness, and anxiety,” he said. “We all want to score and not concede any
goals. I am not entirely happy with the result, we weren’t passing as quickly as I would have liked. But the spirit of these players is strong and they are willing to learn.” North Korea coach Kim Jong Hun praised his side’s performance which had been capped by a consolation goal through Ji Yun Nam on 89 minutes. “The Brazilian team is very strong and although we were unable to win the game, I felt my players fought very well,” he said. “We had to wait until the end of the game to score, but in the first half the players carried out the game plan very well. “We managed to fend them off whether they were attacking down the wings or through the middle. We didn’t win, but we have picked up some confidence and I think we will do well in the next two games.” Boasting impressive ball skills, the North Koreans attacked mainly through Jong Tae Se who tested Brazil ‘keeper Julio Cesar on several occasions.
Jong, who sobbed uncontrollably when his country’s national anthem was being played, never stopped working in a match watched by a 54,331strong crowd at Ellis Park. The breakthrough finally came when Elano played the ball onto Maicon who fired in his shot across the goal which curled around the near post from a tight angle on 55 minutes. The Koreans started to show signs of tiring after conceding the goal and Pak Choi Jin was stretchered off after 69 minutes clutching his calf. A defence-splitting pass from Robinho on 72 minutes further broke the North Korean resistence as Elano drilled his shot past Guk. With time almost up, Ji gave the small group of Korean fans something to cheer about when he smashed his shot past Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar. Brazil next face Didier Drogba’s Ivory Coast on Sunday in Johannesburg, while North Korea take on Portugal in Cape Town on Monday.

CAPE TOWN – Asian teams have done the continent proud in their opening games of the World Cup with the exception of disappointing Australia, who were tipped by many to be the region’s best chance of success. Hundreds of millions of people across Asia have witnessed gutsy performances from South Korea, Japan, North Korea and even Oceania qualifier New Zealand. North Korea scored their first World Cup goal in 44 years, Japan posted their maiden World Cup victory on foreign soil and New Zealand picked up their first point ever. But the Socceroos, who went further then any other Asian nation at the World Cup four years ago, let the side down, embarrassingly crushed 4-0 by Germany. The most unexpected result came from Japan, who entered the tournament on the back of four straight defeats and with few punters expecting things to change.

LOS ANGELES – The trophy, the champagne, the hats, the T-shirts. Even Bill Russell and Kevin McHale. Everything was in place at Staples Center for the Boston Celtics to wrap up their 18th NBA championship. And then the Lakers shoved everything back in its boxes and sent all the Celtics in sight back to their hotels for two more days. With an emphatic, historic blowout win in Game 6 Tuesday night, Los Angeles earned the right to host the grand finale to both the NBA season and this scintillating chapter in the league’s most glamorous rivalry. Kobe Bryant scored 26 points, Pau Gasol added 17 points and 13 rebounds, and the Lakers held Boston to the second lowest-scoring performance in NBA finals history in an 8967 victory, setting up a winner-takeall Game 7 on Thursday. Faced with elimination for the first time in this postseason, the defending champion Lakers didn’t flinch.
Just look at Bryant, who still hasn’t cracked a smile during the quest for his fifth title — the same number as Magic Johnson, and one behind Michael Jordan. “We’re used to being in must-win situations,” Bryant said. “The way we look at it, (Game 7) is just a game we’ve got to win. ... I don’t mean to be a buzzkill. I know what’s at stake, but I’m not tripping.” He left that to the Celtics, who fell all over themselves after falling behind by 22 points in the first half. LONDON – Reigning Wimbledon champion Roger Federer will be the top seed at the grasscourt grand slam despite losing the world number one spot to Rafael Nadal. Federer was passed by Nadal in the world rankings after the Spaniard won the French Open earlier this month. But Federer has won Wimbledon six times, including his dramatic final victory over Andy Roddick last year, so All England Club chiefs have decided to install the Swiss star as their number one seed ahead of Nadal. Nadal, who was last year unable to defend the Wimbledon title he won in 2008 because of injury, is the second seed, while Novak Djokovic is the third seed and Britain’s Andy Murray the fourth. Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Roddick moves up to fifth seed due to his fine record on grass despite being ranked seventh in the world. WETTINGEN – Italian rider Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre) came through to win the 192km fourth stage of the Tour of Switzerland here on Tuesday, although a mass crash marred the final sprint. German Tony Martin (HTC-Columbia), held up by the crash 50 metres from the finish line, kept hold of the leader’s yellow jersey. The pile-up occurred when Martin’s Columbia team-mate Mark Cavendish of Great Britain and the German-Australian Heinrich Haussler (Cervelo Test Team), winner of the
second stage, touched bikes as they were sprinting for the line. The two leaders both went to ground, bringing down a dozen other riders with them, notably the Belgian Tom Boonen (Quick Step), who hit Cavendish on the way. Haussler, who was taken to hospital where tests revealed a deep wound to his right elbow, will take no further part in the race. “I didn’t see Cavenish coming,” he said. “He drove into my wheel and before I knew it, I went down and was lying on the ground. Alonso promises Ferrari surge Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari is set to make big strides with its forthcoming developments, and denied that the next upgrade package is a ‘last ditch effort’ to rescue its title bid. The former champion has not won since the Bahrain seasonopener, but following a dismal Turkish Grand Prix that saw Ferrari trailing Mercedes and Renault as well as McLaren and Red Bull, Alonso was a frontrunner all weekend in Canada and finished third after a tough battle for victory with the McLarens. Having not changed its package at all for Montreal, Ferrari is now introducing significant upgrades for Valencia, which is understood to include a new exhaust system that will improve airflow over the rear aerodynamics. Alonso reckons this step will be the piece Ferrari needs to get firmly back in contention - and reminded critics of Ferrari’s recent performance that last year, during a much worse season, it still rallied to a string of podiums and a win with Kimi Raikkonen in the summer. “We will have major updates on the F10 which I hope will allow us
to up our performance level,” Alonso wrote in his blog for Ferrari’s website. “Following on from that, we have further developments in the pipeline which should arrive for England and Germany: which is to say that the European Grand Prix is simply the ninth round of the championship, not a last ditch effort for Ferrari, which I heard some people saying. “I don’t see how they can say that given that we have not even reached the halfway point of the season and that after Valencia there will still be ten grands prix to go. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again now, this is a stage event and the final one of those stages will not come until November in Abu Dhabi. There is still a long way to go and things can change very quickly, going either one way or the other. “People seem to have forgotten that last year, in the middle part of the season and in a car that was getting ever less competitive, Kimi was
the driver who had scored the most points.” Alonso added that the Canada performance proved that Ferrari had never really been in crisis, and that its Istanbul slump was just an anomaly. “We were back to where we have been in practically all the other races, the one exception being Turkey, where for various reasons, everything about the grand prix went wrong, from every point of view,” he said. “The normal situation is the one we have seen in Montreal, Monaco, Melbourne and Sakhir and all the other tracks where we fought for a podium finish. “Maybe the results did not always match our potential, but I think the same can be said for all the top teams. In these first eight races of the season, all sorts of things happened - mistakes, reliability problems, bad luck - but we are still in the thick of the fight for both championships. The same can be said of McLaren and Red Bull, who have also missed out on points along the way.”
ITALIAN Grand Prix winner Dani Pedrosa is aiming to keep his momentum going into this weekend’s race at Silverstone. The Honda rider scored his first win of the season at Mugello to move into second place in the championship standings, 25 points behind Yamaha rival Jorge Lorenzo. Pedrosa is feeling upbeat about his chances for the British race following his win in Italy, but concedes it will be crucial for the championship to be consistent in the upcoming three races in a row. “We arrive at Silverstone in good shape after the victory in Mugello,” said Pedrosa. “We had a very good weekend in Italy and myself and the team need to make the most of it to maintain this momentum. “We will start on Friday without prior knowledge, but it’s the same for everyone so I hope we can adapt as quickly as possible to prepare for the race. We will have three races in a row now - Britain, Holland and Catalunya - and it will be very important not to make mistakes and to maintain consistency in the results.” Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso is also positive going into the British Grand Prix following his podium finish at Mugello. “We arrive at this race in very good shape, with three podiums from four races, and we’re feeling especially good after the podium at Mugello - my home race - because this was really significant for me,” he said. “Now we have to take another step forward because on Sunday I want to IBP/ist Dani Pedrosa fight for the win.”
