In the classical arts performance, Jero Puspawati, a dancer of Tegeh Kori, Denpasar-born in 1933 will show off Candra Metu Dance. This dance describes the beauty of the moon when going out of her bed. As if the beautiful bright moonlight shared her beauty with every single corner of the earth. Since the age of seven years old, Jero Puspawati had learned to dance from Wayan Rindi and Nyoman Kaler who composed this dance in 1942.
Furthermore, the dancer Jero Gadung Arwati from Tabanan born in 1937 will show off Wiranata Dance. This dance describes the valor and glory of a king to lead his subjects. Originally this dance was created by a great artist I Nyoman Kaler in 1946 and later on revised by I Nyoman Ridet. Jero Gadung Arwati herself had learned to dance since the age of 9 years from Made Pasek in Kerambitan and Nyoman Ridet. Other dancers is Gusti Ayu Raka Rasmi presenting the Oleg Tamulilingan Dance (serving as female beetles). Gusti Ayu Raka Rasmi is noted as the first artist dancing the dance created by Ketut Maria (Mario) in 1952. The dancer of Ubud, Peliatanborn in 1939 was originally learned to dance Condong Legong from Gusti Made Sengog, then trained Oleg Dance by Ketut Maria. Oleg Tamulilingan is a dance depicting a couple of male and female beetle flirting in the flower garden. Its male dancer will be brought by AA Gede Putra Rahma. Meanwhile, Goak Macok Dance depicting the agility of a crow safeguarding its nest visualized in the liveliness of dancing while seating will be brought by Ida Bagus Oka Wirjana, 81. This dance artist from Blangsinga, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, had learned to
dance since his young age from his uncle, Ida Bagus Kompyang. Then, he once became a student of Ketut Mario to learn Kebyar Duduk Dance that was also composed by Mario. Then, Palawakya Dance conveying the greatness and wisdom of a king that masters all forms of arts will be presented by Ni Luh Menek who was born at Jagaraga, Buleleng, in 1939. Since her childhood, Luh Menek had studied Teruna Jaya Dance and continued to learn Palawakya Dance from Wayan Wandres as composer of these two dances. In the meantime, the Semarandana Classical Legong Dance depicting the story of love affairs of Dewi Ratih (goddess of love) and Dewa Semara (gods of love) that later were burnt by the Lord Shiva and their ashes were scattered over the earth as early human love story. This dance will be performed by the dancers of next generation of the previous ones. They were two cousins who were born in 1947 in Karangasem, namely AA Ayu Kusuma Arini and AA Bulan Trisna Djelantik. Both dancers had learned to dance since the age of eight years from Ida Bagus Raka Bongkasa. Up to these days, they continue to preserve and develop the arts of Balinese dance performance. (08)

Kemangi Restaurant located in the Plaza Bali, Simpang Siur, Kuta, is alleged to have no license or illegal. The management is suspected to outsmart the licensing, one of them is by using the Building Permit (IMB) of Plaza Bali for its own sake. Even, Kemangi Restaurant has been in operation since September 2009. Two sources of this newspaper said Kemangi Restaurant had been in operation for nine months without a permit, starting from the IMB to operating permit. Again, he said the matter had been reported to the government either to the Office of Housing, Planning and Urban Development (DCK) of Badung Regency, Permit Services or to public order officers (Satpol PP) of Badung Regency. Unfortunately, these sources said, the government never followed up the earlier reports. Even, the sources mentioned the existence of a number of government officers of Badung Regency Government taking advantage of the violations. As for the building permit, Kemangi Restaurant is one of the
restaurants within Plaza Bali building complex. To establish the restaurant, there are a number of additions or expansion of the building. “There should be a change to the IMB. But, why did it even still use the former building permit of Plaza Bali? The owner himself had admitted not to have the IMB, but even underestimated this matter,” he said. Furthermore, he disclosed the owner of Kemangi Restaurant was an investor from Japan. The restaurant sold Italian food having seat capacity of 150 units. Presumably, there was also expatriate worker in the restaurant having no legal working permit. When asking for separate confirmation, Section Head of Control and Operation of Satpol PP of Badung Regency, Dewa Raka Parta, last Tuesday (Jun 8), said his party had followed up the report on the allegation of illegal operation of Kemangi Restaurant. According to him, Satpol PP Badung had made the call to the manager concerned. At Klungkung Kertagosa and Dock Became Financial Examiner Agency’s Findings Semarapura (Bali Post)-
Financial Examiner Agency (BPK) found a gap in Sub district Kelungkung’s finance report and so they find it themselves. Some of the findings are assets to the tourist attraction Kertagosa at the city centre and building a dock in Nusa Penida. “Yes, we heard about the findings. Actually all the Klungkung Regional Parliamentary (DPRD) leaders were invited to BPK’s event in giving the report of the auditing,” DPRD Klungkung’s Chief, A.A. Anom stated when asked to confirm last Tuesday (8/6). According to Agung Anom, BPK have found this all the time. The process took long and because of it Agung Anom asked responsibility from the Klungkung Region Government to be more serious in finding evidences of the assets so it won’t be another finding. Task Manager Head of Income Agency, Region Finance and Assets Management, IGNB Putra also said yes. There is no evidence being held by the region’s government for the Kertagosa asset, evidence to neither management rights nor use rights. When actually, on the BPK’s result
of findings, Klungkung put Kertagosa as one of the region’s assets but stated as from the kingdom. “That evidence was asked from the BPK so there’s an explanation to the rights,” Gusti Putra explained. It’s then admitted the rights were being processed. It’s still finding the legal base in getting a certificate and others needed to complete the certificate regulations and also preparing the statement letter made by the Regent that states Kertagosa is being managed by the region government Klungkung. This is evidence to the management, maintenance and retribution collecting that has been done by the region government. “Making this statement letter signed by the Regent was a suggestion from the Land Property Office as a regulation in completing to get the certificate, either that certificate is for management right or use right,” Gusti Putra added. Meanwhile, with the findings of Nusa Penida Dock asset, Gusti Putra said that it was an administration false where there is no evidence supporting it such as evidence of a handover from the centre government to the region government of Klungkung. Artists of Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar preparation are almost final in presenting an oratory or a ballet colossal “Anggada Duta” to open the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (PKB) at 12th June 2010. ISI wants to perform as maximum and with quality in this ballet that involves many dancers and gamelan music players. A couple of days ago the preparation was looked over by Head of Culture Agency Bali Province, IB Sedawa and then by Bali’s Vice Governor, Pusapayoga last Tuesday (8/6). The oratory will be performed at the evening event of the festival’s opening ceremony. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the festival in the evening at Arda Candra open stage, Art Centre, Denpasar and also as the audience to the ballet colossal. Vice Governor Puspayoga supported fully ISI Denpasar’s hard work in presenting their best work yet. His side believes this presentation is something special as ISI is where competition in arts exists. He’s also amazed by the dancing tricks performed for the oratory because they are hard and very advanced. The oratory Anggada Duta tells about Sri Rama, Laksamana and Wibisana were going to Swela Mountain facing Balantentara Rahwana, King of Alengka. As they got to Swelagiri, Sri Rama was amazed by the beauty of the forest with many animals living in harmony. His sadness was healed by the happiness of the monkeys lead by Sugriwa, Anoman and Anggada. Then it was spotted one monkey was different from the others. Wibisana knows the monkey was an incarnation of giant Sukasrana. Anggada then captured Sukasrana and showed it to Sri Rama. With Rama’s command, Sukasrana was not killed but told to go back to Rahwana. Rama then told Anggada to go to Alengka to warn Rahwana to bring back Dewi Shita. At Alengka Kingdom, King Rahwana was leading a trial while waiting Sukasrana to come back. All of a sudden Anggada came and asked Rahwana to give back Sri Rama’s wife. In a drunken state, Rahwana provoked Anggada to not take Rama’s side because Anggada’s father, Subali, was killed by Rama himself. Anggada was provoked but in the end he was made aware by Rama and so Anggada wholeheartedly defended Sri Rama. (08)

BEIJING – A farmer in central China has turned his home into a fort equipped with a homemade cannon and fireworks to fight off government eviction in an ongoing land dispute, state media said Wednesday. Yang Youde, 56, has twice repelled government-backed demolition crews in Hubei province by firing the cannon and peppering workers with fireworks, the Beijing News said. Yang manufactured his arsenal with used stove pipes and 2,000 yuan (300 dollars) worth of fireworks, it said. His cannon can fire projectiles up to 100 metres (yards), it said. “I’m a law-abiding citizen, I don’t believe these fireworks can kill,” Yang said in an interview. “I must protect my rights. I believe that the lower-level officials
are out to harm the people, but higher-level leaders are enlightened,” he said. “I’m a farmer. My whole life depends on farming. If I surrender, I have nowhere to go.” In the latest confrontation in May, workers beat Yang up after he ran out of fireworks, the report said. China has witnessed a surge of violent confrontations triggered by land seizures as officials and businesses seek to cash in on a nationwide property boom by evicting residents and developing their land. In late April, a Communist Party official in Henan province was detained after he ordered a truck driver to run over a protester in a land dispute. The protester was killed. In another case, a 47-year-old woman set herself on fire in November in Sichuan province over the planned demolition of her husband’s garment-processing business. She died 16 days later.

The dispute between the sons of Sultan Tengku Ismail Petra has embarrassed the royal household of Malaysia’s eastern Kelantan
state and aggravated a recent power struggle among palace figures while the sultan was stricken by a heartrelated illness. Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, the sultan’s third son, filed a lawsuit against his eldest brother, Tengku Muhammad Faris, in September to seek a court declaration that he had the right to use a Bentley Brooklands car worth 1.6 million ringgit ($480,000). Fakhry alleged he had paid for the
car in 2008 for his own and his father’s use, even though the sultan was registered as the official owner. In July, representatives of Faris took away the car while Fakhry was abroad and refused to return it to him. Fakhry’s lawyer, Haaziq Pillay, told the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Wednesday that Fakhry was withdrawing his suit on the wishes of his father, who will determine who gets to use the car. Haaziq said Fakhry managed to
use the car recently and has no objections if his brother also wants to use it. Iran hangs four rapists, drug trafficker: report AFP
TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran has hanged four men convicted of rape and another man found guilty of drug trafficking in Tehran, government newspaper Iran reported on Wednesday. The men hanged on Tuesday were identified as Mehdi, 33, convicted of raping at least two teenage boys, an unnamed 21-year-old man who had raped a retarded 22-year-old woman two years ago, and two other unnamed men who had broken into a house late at night and raped a woman. The drug trafficker who was also hanged on Tuesday was identified as Masoud, 33, convicted of smuggling eight kilogrammes (17 pounds) of heroin, the report said. The hangings bring to at least 79 the number of people put to death in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports. Last year, at least 270 people were hanged. Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.

NEW DELHI (AFP) – At least 21 members of a wedding party were killed on Wednesday when a bus in which they were travelling rammed into a tree in eastern India, reports said. Eighteen people were declared dead at the scene and
three other passengers died in a local hospital, the Press Trust of India news agency quoted police in Jharkhand state as saying. The accident occurred when the bus driver lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road, state police officer Sanjay Ranjan told PTI. About 20 people in the bus were also injured.

BIHAR – An Indian boy with eight limbs whose veneration as a god propelled him in to the public spotlight has been operated on to give him the chance of a normal life, his father said Wednesday. Deepak Paswan, 7, was born in one of the least developed parts of India with a parasitic twin conjoined to his abdomen, which meant he had four legs and four arms but one head. Hindu pilgrims from the area near his village in the northern state of Bihar used to visit the household to worship him as an incarnation of the god Vishnu, who is often depicted with more than four limbs. His family, uncomfortable with the attention, appealed publicly for help in March to secure an operation to have the unwanted limbs removed. Their wish was granted on May 30 in a hospital in the southern city of Bangalore which bore the cost of the complicated and dangerous procedure. “We always wanted surgery to remove the parasitic twin to get rid of him being treated as a religious object by people,” his father, Viresh Paswan, told AFP by telephone. “My dream has come true, now we will celebrate it after returning to my village.” The father, a low-caste construction worker in his mid-30s, called the four-hour operation a “miracle” and said his son would now be able to go to school “like any boy of his age”. Deepak’s story mirrors that of Lakshmi Tatma, a girl from Bihar who was born with four arms and four legs but who was successfully operated on in 2007. She was also treated as a rare child with divine powers before she was operated on, a hospital bearing the cost of the 50,000-dollar surgery.
Her remarkable story made her famous worldwide and she was the subject of television documentaries and newspaper articles in countries across the globe. The Fortis Hospital in Bangalore said a team of 15 doctors worked on Deepak’s case and after months of consultations went ahead with the complicated surgery. “He is 100 percent fit,” said chief surgeon Ramcharan Thiagrajan, adding that doctors faced a challenge to ensure his intestines functioned correctly in the long run. “Due to all the mockery and stigma he has faced he is very restless and nervous. But now after this successful operation and counselling he will lead a normal life.” A parasitic twin occurs when a twin embryo begins to develop in the mother, but ultimately does not separate. This results in a semiformed twin adjoined to the body of the developed twin.

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Tuesday the Indonesian government was committed to continuing its struggle for an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. “The government will continue its diplomatic struggle to ensure the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state,” presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal quoted the president as telling Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Fariz Al Mehdawi during a meeting with five repatriated Indonesian volunteers at the state palace. The five were among 12 Indonesian volunteers who had been on the convoy of humanitarian aid ships to the Gaza Strip attacked by Israeli forces last May 31. Al Mehdawi meanwhile expressed gratitude to the Indonesian
government and people for their support in the form of capacity building, financial assistance and diplomacy. He said President Yudhoyono‘s commitment to supporting the creation of an independent Palestinian state gave his country inspirations. The support made Palestine stronger and feel that it was not alone in struggling for its independence, he said. The OECD pointed out that the rank for Indonesia along with Brazil was considered as a result of details provided to the recent Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes. The organization said it had updated its progress report, first issued in conjunction with the G20 London summit in April 2009, to take account of communications from Brazil and Indonesia on their legal and regulatory frameworks for exchange of information. According to the information provided, Indonesia has 53 agreements that meet the standard while Brazil has more than 25 bilateral tax treaties that provide for exchange of information in tax matters to the internationally
agreed standard.The two countries joined the Global Forum last September. A full description of the two countries legal and regulatory frameworks will be included in the Global Forum‘s ss2010 annual assessment to be published later this year, the OECD said. As with all members of the Global Forum, both countries will undergo peer reviews of their exchange of information laws and practices, Brazil in 2011 and 2012 and Indonesia in 2011 and 2013, it said, adding that. Brazil is a member both of the Forum’s Steering Group and of its Peer Review Group. Jeffrey Owens, Director of the OECD Center for Tax Policy and Administration, said: “We are very pleased to be able to include these two important members of the G20 within the scope of the progress report.” Since April 2009, more than 500 bilateral tax information exchange agreements have been signed worldwide, with 28 jurisdictions joining those ranked as having substantially implemented the internationally agreed standard.

As the UNESCO member, our governments are concerned and responsible to protect our monuments for our national interest, such as Brobudur temple. Based on the development of archaeological studies and the related studies especially in field of archaeological protection, now such problems is a technical matter and besed on scientific consideration. Facing such problem , Indonesian government have done a number of works e.g the safeguarding of borobudur tample {in cooperation with {UNESCO}, Prambanan tample ,Demak mosque, and other tamples in Bali namely Pura Besakih ,Pura Mengening , Pura Pegulingan , Pura Taman Sari etc. In this case, our government as one of the ASEAN countries have carried out a coordinate programmers through SPAFA (Sub project of archaeology and fine art) to find out the effective ways and means dealing with the problems of archaeological protection . Discussing the archaeological protection in Bali, it should be remembered that Bali, even a very small island, but has a lot of archaeological monuments, which most of them belonged to living monuments. Among them are a number of Hindu tample, spreated nearly in the whole island, as well as Hindu stastues , inscription etc. As the holy monuments for Balinese society, so the Balinese have the responsibility to take care their monuments as their religious function Officially, archaeological protection in Bali is done by Bali Office for Preservation of archaeological and Historical Heritage (Kantor Bali Suaka pening-gelang Sejarah dan Purbakala Bali) in coordialnation and corporation with the local government and local people as well. This office have done a lot of archaeological reconstruction, but not yet covered the whole of them, because of the limited budgets etc. In case of protecting the archaeological monuments in Bali, Bali Office for Preservation of ar-
chaeological and Historical Heritage has given a technical guidance to the local people for reconstructing their monuments and financial support as well. As the governments have a very limited budget for these works, and as the owner of the living monuments, so the Balinese people have their religious tasks and responsibility to protect sacred monuments. In Bali generally each village have three village temples named Pura Kyayangan Tiga e.g Pura Puseh,Pura Desa (sometime combined with Pura Bale Agung ) and Pura dalem. Among them are belonged to archaeological monuments and frequently in these temple a number of archaeological monuments are preserved such as statues, inscription etc. It is important to note here that the unity of the Balinese society is tightly bounded by the village temples and social organization. Based on religious reasons, actuality Balinese society has a strong spirit to keep their monuments in a well condition as holy monuments. Since a very long time the Balinese people have maintained and restored their monuments in a very traditional ways, based on their own religious will and spirit, and for this purpose they collected the materials, even reasonable money from the village members. The village members, especially the skilled members (Balinese, undagi) did the restoration and led by the village leader, without any payment (Balinese, ngayah). This mutual model of works named gotong royong is one of the Indonesian spirits, which has been developed since the early time until today. It is a remarkable fact since the early time Balinese people have done the archeological protection in their traditional ways, which really should be regarded as a community based conservation. The most important meaning of these facts is the Balinese have done their religious task, which still continued from one generation to next generation and still retained until today. Therefore these facts indicated that the Balinese people from time to time have played important role for protecting their archeological monuments, for worshipping their ancestor’s spirit, the Hindu Trinity as well as their local deities. It is hoped that this religious traditions should be keep in people’s mind and increased, now and in the near future for the safeguarding the archeological monuments and its cultural values. INGREDIENTS: 4 baby chickens, each 400 gr (13 oz) 1 cup chicken spice paste 2½ cup coconut milk 3¼ cups chicken stock 4 stalks lemon grass, bruised 4 salam leaves 2 lemon leaves 1 tbsp salt 1 tbsp black peppercorns, crushed
PREPARATION: Cut along the backbone of chicken, open butterfly style and flatten. Heat heavy saucepan, add spice paste and sauté for 2 minute over low heat. Add, chicken stock, lemon grass, salam leaves, lemon leaves and bring to boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Add coconut cream, bring to boild, season with salt and pepper. Add chickens and simmer until three-quarters cooked, turning chicken frequently. Remove from fire and cool chicken in the sauce to room temperature. Remove chicken from sauce and dry well in open airy place for 30 minutes. Grill over charcoal until dark golden brown. Grilled chicken tastes best when served with peanut sauce, steamed rice and vegetables.

BUSINESS IMF warns Asia of spillovers from European crisis

SINGAPORE - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned Asia on Wednesday of potential spillovers from the European debt crisis, which is unfolding a decade after the region underwent its own financial turmoil. “Adverse developments in Europe could disrupt global trade, with implications for Asia given the still important role of external demand,” IMF deputy managing director Naoyuki Shinohara told a forum in Singapore. On the financial front, he said major credit problems could result in a “significant spillover” through funding channels, especially where banks depend on wholesale funding. The crisis has also increased the potential for uncertainty and volatility in the outlook for capital flows, Shinohara said at the forum hosted by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the de facto central bank. He said Asia’s bright growth prospects, together with low interest rates in major economies, would likely attract more capital that could “lead to risks of overheating in some economies if appropriate policy action is not taken. “On the other hand, further increases in global risk aversion could see capital flows change direction quickly.” Asia underwent a severe financial crisis in the late 1990s after a
lending spree triggered currency volatility, resulting in the collapse of banks and companies across the world’s most populous region. The region also suffered from the global recession triggered by the US housing market collapse two years ago, but is now leading the recovery. Shinohara called on Asian governments to be wary of the potential risks from the European crisis and be prepared to take appropriate action. “The key will be for policymakers to keep an eye on the bigger picture and be ready to act swiftly as developments unfold,” he said. “With Asia’s economic muscle growing, the policy choices made in this region will have an important impact on the global economy,” he said. Greece is at the epicentre of a mounting debt crisis that threatens to spread across the eurozone and has pulled down the currency to four-year lows against the dollar and eight year lows against the yen. Shinohara said there was a risk that sovereign debt problems being experienced in some eurozone coun-
tries could spill over to others. He said the strong fiscal position of most Asian economies provided the “space” to respond flexibly to the European crisis. “In the event of spillovers from Europe, there is ample room in most Asian economies to pause the withdrawal of fiscal stimulus.” In a question-and-answer session, Shinohara said “we need to watch the situation very carefully and take actions as necessary.” Shinohara reiterated earlier comments by IMF chief Dominique Straus-Kahn that there was little cause for concern over Hungary’s fiscal woes, which have been placed in the spotlight after comments by two senior political figures in Budapest on the state of the national coffers. “I think the situation is much calmer and there is not much to worry about at this moment,” Shinohara said. The IMF sent its new mission chief for Hungary, Christoph Rosenberg, to Budapest on Monday to discuss the economic situation and prospects.

SINGAPORE - Despite safety fears, Southeast Asia’s energy-hungry economies are exploring the nuclear option to keep up with escalating power demand in a region of more than half a billion people. Vietnam plans to make its first nuclear plant operational in 10 years, while Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are all exploring the feasibility of tapping atomic energy. “Everybody wants aircon, everybody wants the latest appliances, so all these translate into demand for electricity,” says Anthony Jude, director for the energy and water division with the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB). Detractors point to Southeast Asia’s lack of experience in nuclear power and express doubts about the safety culture in a region prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Philippines built a nuclear plant in the 1970s but it was never operated commercially because of safety concerns and alleged corruption in the contract process. But the concerns are surmountable, experts said. “You cannot say nuclear power plants in Southeast Asia will necessarily be more dangerous than anywhere else,” said Martine Letts, deputy director with the Sydney-based Lowy Institute for International Policy. She pointed to international institutions such as the World Association of Nuclear Operators to get Southeast Asia up to speed in nuclear power safety. Environmental group Greenpeace believes the region would be better off tapping renewable sources such as geothermal and solar power due to its vulnerability to natural disasters. “What’s the reason to have nuclear power plants if we have so much renewable energy potential in this region?” Arif Fiyanto, Greenpeace’s Jakarta-based regional climate and energy campaigner, told AFP. The appetite for power is certainly there, according to Jude, who told a recent seminar in Singapore that energy demand within the broader Asia-Pacific region was projected to grow an
annual 2.4 percent until 2030. That is faster than the 1.1 percent annual growth in demand for the rest of the world. “How are we going to meet it?” the ADB official said. Jude said any country looking at nuclear power will have to prepare itself for the long haul. “Basically you have to look at planning, policies, regulations... you have to train a cadet of engineers in nuclear technology, nuclear safety, nuclear policy,” he told AFP. “You got to have a cream of people in that field.” Jude cited Vietnam as an exemplary case — authorities began the groundwork for nuclear power plants more than a decade ago. Hanoi’s communist lawmakers approved last November the construction of the country’s first nuclear power stations with a total capacity of 4,000 megawatts. Estimated by experts to cost 11-18 billion dollars, the initial plans call for four reactors to be built with at least one expected to be operational from 2020. Malaysia laid out plans in May to build its first nuclear power plant by 2021 while in Singapore, the government has just started a feasibility study. Indonesia and Thailand have also considered nuclear power stations but face strong local opposition to the siting of reactors. A region that is overly reliant on fossil fuels needs to examine every alternative, according to Michael Quah, chief scientist with the Singapore-based Energy Studies Institute. “My belief is that most of us should develop a more balanced view,” he said. “Just as if you would invest in stocks, you keep a portfolio mix. Similarly in energy, you have to keep a portfolio mix that is appropriate to the resources available in your region.” Net electricity generation in non-industrial countries in Asia — excluding China and India — will more than double from 976 billion kilowatt hours in 2007 to 2.06 trillion kilowatt hours in 2030, according to estimates from the US Energy Information Administration. China now has 11 nuclear power reactors in operation and is building about two dozen more. India hopes soon to gain access to US know-how under a historic civil nuclear energy pact.

The popular Universal Studios film trilogies spawned several games in their heyday in the ’80s and ’90s but have been absent from the interactive realm. The as-yet-untitled Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC and Mac games are set to be released this winter. “I think it’s a prime time to reintroduce these properties in the digital world,” said Dan Connors, CEO at Telltale Games. “Telltale Games has always set out to be a great storytelling company. We’ve been honing our chops over the past six years, and we’re ready to take on these two iconic properties and continue to advance storytelling in games.” Telltale Games previously created episodic games based on Aardman Animations’ Oscar-winning animated film series “Wallace and Gromit,” Steve Purcell’s comic series “Sam and Max” and Matt Chapman’s online cartoon “Homestar Runner.” The

PARIS – A stolen letter written by 17th-century thinker Descartes and found in the United States was returned to France on Tuesday, ending a detective tale featuring a Google search and a thieving Italian count. “I am, of course, a bit amazed at what a simple search at home from your home computer late at night can bring about,” Erik-Jan Bos, a Dutch Descartes scholar who found the letter through the web, said before a handover ceremony. The letter written by French philosopher Rene Descartes in 1641 went missing more than 150 years ago, one of a vast collection of documents stolen by an Italian count, Guglielmo Libri. Libri, a math professor in France
in the 19th century who was also in charge of inspecting archived papers, is believed to have stolen thousands of letters and documents, selling them to collectors and booksellers. Descartes’ letter eventually wound up in a collection at Haverford College in the US state of Pennsylvania, and the school’s administration was not aware of its theft generations earlier when Bos informed them of it. Bos found the letter’s trace after keying the terms “autographed let-
ter” and “Descartes” into the search engine late one night in January, contacting the college immediately by email and hearing back soon after. The letter was important not only because it was from Descartes, writing to his friend Marin Mersenne, who was acting as an editor for him as well, but also because it contained significant substance. In the letter, the author of the famous statement “I think, therefore I am” discusses his soon to be published “Meditations on First Philosophy,” writing of potential changes, among other things. The school knew the letter was in its library’s special collections, but did not realise it was considered missing in France and had been stolen.

CANBERRA, Australia – Crocodiles can surf ocean currents to take long leisurely journeys across open seas in the South Pacific, a researcher said on Wednesday. The research by a group of Australian ecologists published this week in the British Ecological Society’s “Journal of Animal Ecology” explains how the world’s largest living reptile came to occupy so many South Pacific islands despite having little stamina for swimming. Like a surfer catching a wave, estuarine crocodiles — which can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) — can ride currents to cross hundreds of miles (kilometers) of open sea, study author Hamish Campbell said. The research began in 2002 in the tropics of Australia’s Queensland state and involved environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin, the so-called Crocodile Hunter who was killed by a stingray barb off Queensland in 2006. Campbell, a University of Queensland ecologist, teamed up with government rangers and the Irwin family’s Australia Zoo to tag
27 adult crocodiles in the remote Kennedy River. They used sonar transmitters and underwater receivers to track their movements over 12 months. Campbell said a 20-minute swim is hard work for a crocodile, so he was surprised that eight of the tagged crocodiles repeatedly took long journeys out to sea from their river home area that was more than 35 miles (60 kilometers) upstream. “It did seem unlikely that they were swimming the entire way and when we looked at residual surface currents from satellite (images), you could see quite clearly that they were indeed following the current systems,” Campbell told The Associated Press. One 13-foot (3.8-meter) male swam 367 miles (590 kilometers) over 25 days to another river system where it stayed for seven months before returning. “Why he went there, we have absolutely no idea, but it seems very deliberate, purposeful movements,” Campbell said. WASHINGTON – “Why did they cut you?” The shocking question came from a respected spine surgeon tracked down by Keith Swenson, who was still in severe pain after an earlier back operation. He didn’t know what to believe. Two other surgeons had urged more operations, different ones. And Swenson, who’s from Howard Lake, Minn., is far from alone. Even though only a fraction of people with back pain are good candidates for surgery, complicated spine operations are on the rise. So is the hunt for any relief. By one recent estimate, Americans are spending a staggering $86 billion a year in care for aching backs — from MRIs to pain pills to nerve blocks to acupuncture. That research found little
evidence that the population got better as the bill soared over the past decade. “The way medicine is so StarTreky these days, they believe something can be done,” said Dr. Charles Rosen, a spine surgeon at the University of California, Irvine. The reality is that time often is the best antidote. Most people will experience back pain at some point, but up to 90 percent will heal on their own within weeks. In fact, for run-of-the-mill cases, doctors aren’t even supposed to do an X-ray or MRI unless the pain lingers for a month to six weeks. Yet a study last year found nearly one in three aching Medicare patients get some kind of back scan within that first month. Why is that a problem? Those scans can be misleading. The bigger problem: When the misery lingers, there’s no one-size-fits-most treatment. “There are a lot of procedures going on for patients in whom we don’t have good scientific evidence that it’s going to help,” said Dr. Richard Deyo of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, who long has studied how people fare with different options for this tough ailment. For example, there’s a wide variety of spinal injections that aim to numb back pain, using different drugs and targeting different spots. Which one works depends on what study you read.

Torres scores in return as Spain routs Poland 6-0 Associated Press Writer
MURCIA, Spain – Fernando Torres scored in his return from mid-April knee surgery, Cesc Fabregas got a goal in his second game since breaking a leg, and European champion Spain routed Poland 6-0 Tuesday night in a World Cup warmup for its 11th straight win. Andres Iniesta left in the 39th minute with an apparent right thigh strain. Iniesta, whose season for Barcelona was cut short when he tore a muscle in the same thigh in April, was expected to have medical scans in Barcelona on Wednesday. Iniesta provided the pass for David Villa’s goal in the 12th minute before starting the move that led to David Silva’s goal in the 14th. Iniesta hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for Spain since February 2009. “The doctors will see, but he came off mostly as a precaution,” Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. Team doctor Juan Jose Garcia Cota said “it doesn’t appear to be a tear” but cautioned that only the tests will make a determination. Torres had right knee surgery

BOSTON – Derek Fisher rallied his teammates with a motivational speech on the bench during the break before the fourth quarter. Then he went out and showed them how it’s done. “Derek, he’s our vocal leader. He’s the guy that pulls everybody together and is always giving positive reinforcement,” Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said after Fisher made five baskets in the final period to lead Los Angeles to a 91-84 victory Tuesday night over the Boston Celtics and a 2-1 lead in the NBA finals. “That’s what he does. That’s what he’s been doing extremely well. He has a knack for saying the right thing at the right time.” Bryant scored 29 points and Fisher had 16, including 11 in the fourth quarter after Boston cut a 17-point first-half lead to one point.
Game 4 is Thursday night in Boston, and a Lakers victory would put them within one win of avenging the loss to their longtime rivals in the 2008 finals — not to mention the eight other times the Celtics have won an NBA title at the Lakers’ expense. “Our thoughts are really just still on how disappointed we are, or were, losing that second game on our home court. I think that had more of our attention and focus than what happened in ’08,” Fisher said. “We didn’t doubt our ability to win here. ... Bryant had 25 points after three quarters, but he did not score for the first 10 minutes of the fourth. Hamilton: Momentum is building, McLaren ‘absolutely on it’ After what he describes as a ‘wicked’ victory in the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul last time out - and a one-two at that former F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton reveals the momentum is building inside McLaren-Mercedes, and that the team is ‘absolutely on it’ Former F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton admits that he ‘can’t keep the smile off his face’ heading to Montreal for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, for not only is the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve the scene of his breakthrough success in the top flight three years ago, but he contends that his McLaren-Mercedes team is now ‘absolutely on it’. With Red Bull Racing having proven the undisputed benchmark in F1 2010 to-date, the Woking-based outfit finally got on terms with its Milton Keynes rival in the Turkish Grand Prix just over a week ago, and the pressure applied by both Hamilton and team-mate and compatriot Jenson Button was inarguably a factor in the desperate overtaking move by Sebastian Vettel that resulted in himself and Mark Webber crashing out of contention for victory in Istanbul and handing McLaren its second one-two of the campaign practically on a plate – and with it, the 2008 world champion’s first triumph of the season. That, the 25-year-old affirms, was down to the team’s relentless work ethic, already ably witnessed last year when McLaren turned around a 2.5-second deficit to the front-runners at the beginning of the
campaign to steal pole position in four of the last seven races. With less of a comeback to pull off twelve months on, Hamilton is buoyant about his prospects looking forwards now. “It was such a great achievement for the team and for me to finally get a win this year,” he reflected of his Turkish success, speaking to his personal website. “I have been working hard all year for that win, so for the opportunity to finally arrive I felt it was a blessing. It felt good; I felt strong all weekend and knew I could challenge the Red Bulls and I did – it was wicked! “The team did a solid job as they always do throughout the weekend, and without their continued hard work – both on and off the track – we would not be in the position we are to compete with the Red Bulls. For this I am extremely grateful, and I want to congratulate them on our success. “It was almost ten races since I had won a race, but it’s all good. I think most drivers would be happy with that. For some its 20, 50 or 100, so I remain grateful to be in the position I am – and I have no doubt at all that with this approach we can win more races this year.” Along the way, Hamilton had to
get the better of Button in a brief but fierce internecine scrap that caused some to fear that the two McLarens might end up going the same way as the two Red Bulls – but in a show of mutual respect in giving each other just enough room to run side-by-side, the British duo held it together, and Hamilton ultimately re-emerged back ahead. “I think that added to the win,” opined the Stevenage-born ace. “To finally have a race with my teammate – wheel-to-wheel – was a great feeling, and to come out on top was a bonus. I am looking forward to many more races like that where we have fun, hard battles yet fair in our race to the championship. I’ve known Jenson for a very long time, and I think we have a lot of respect for each other and [for]what we’ve achieved as drivers. We’re both world champions, so we have a certain amount of pressure removed from our shoulders too. “I’ve really got to know Jenson well over the past six months. We’ve been working hard, we’ve spent a lot of time together, at the circuit and at events arranged by Vodafone and our other partners – I think that, because we’ve spent a lot of downtime together during filming days or appearances, we’ve actually got to know each other better than if, say, we’d only been working together at the track. He brings a lot of positive energy to the race weekends, and he’s made our team stronger, so these are all positives.
Pirelli on verge of deal AS Pirelli prepares to clear the final hurdle in its bid to return to F1 for the first time in almost two decades in 2011, could Michelin’s last-ditch spoiler effort scupper the Italian marque’s deal..? Just as Pirelli seemed all-set to sign on the dotted line to become the sole tyre-supplier in F1 from 2011 onwards, it appears Michelin has tabled an eleventhhour bid to scupper its Italian rival and seal the deal for itself – as teams hope to be able to test the new tyres later this summer. It was speculated towards the end of last month that it was all-
but agreed that Pirelli would return to the highest level next year for the first time since 1991 – in addition to providing tyres for the feeder GP2 Series alongside its current commitments to GP3 and the World Rally Championship – but when no announcement was forthcoming over the weekend of the Turkish Grand Prix, people began to wonder if there had been a change of heart. Pirelli is understood to be the favoured supplier by both F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone and the majority of the sport’s teams, but Ferrari is conversely championing the more ex-
pensive Michelin offer, given the French marque’s far more recent experience of the top flight having departed the fray only four years ago – and FIA President Jean Todt is believed to similarly be more inclined towards the latter, hence the ongoing situation of stalemate.
