The people in Serangan area found a dead body inside a car in Serangan area on Monday, February 8th 2010. The body was found in very bad condition, it was rotten and smells really bad. From the preliminary investigation, the dead body was Mario Arnold, a 40 years old tourist from Germany. The police can not determine the cause of death because it is still under investigation. Currently, the police are gather-
ing evidences and witnesses in order to investigate the death of the tourist. Form the information gathered on the scene, the body was found in the Turtle Island Development (BTID) Bali, Serangan. The one who found the body was I Ketut Sana, the local

They were arrested in the usual place of hanging on Jalan Mataram, Kuta, and claimed to have taken action at 10 scenes. Chief Benny once could hunt the kingpin of snatchers with initials PI and Bd along with their fence with initials Jt. The hunt to their home village remains without success. Commander of the Udayana IX Regional Military, Hotmangaraja Pandjaitan, ensured that no soldiers of the Udayana IX Military Command were dismissed because of illegal logging case. If any one had been fired from the unit where he served, it was more caused by the lack of discipline and other cases. “Up to this date, no soldiers of the Udayana IX Military Command were known as a backing or engaged in illegal logging. We also do hope this will never happen. Raid to Ferrari, Commission I Gets Futility Denpasar, (Bali Post)—
Commission I of Bali House, last Monday (Feb 8), made a raid to Nadya Auto Graha (NAG) car dealer located on Jalan Teuku Umar, West Denpasar. Unfortunately, at the dealer office, Commission I did not find the super luxury Ferrari cars. More futilely again, Commission I of Bali House could not meet the owner of NAG, Figor Agung Maulana. The raid last Monday was led by Head of Commission I, Made Arjaya, followed by members comprising Dewa Nyoman Rai, Komang Nova Sewi Putra and Gusti Putu Widjera. Arjaya could only communicate with Figor Agung Maulana by phone. At that time, Figor claimed was in Jakarta. According to Arjaya, the NAG’s owner claimed to sell three units of super luxury cars in Bali. “Therefore, out of eleven Ferrari cars in Bali, three were sold by Nadya Auto Graha,” explained Arjaya telling reporters. He added the cars sold by Nadya Autograha were obtained from PT Langgeng, a company having the license from Ferrari. Form A of Ferrari sold by Nadya was made by PT Langgeng, while its Form B was issued by Customs and Excise Office of Tanjung Priok, Jakarta. Arjaya added the Commission I of Bali House would continue to pursue the Ferrari case having no vehicle registration and certificate of ownership. “On next February 11, we will go to Customs and Excise to ask for Ferrari’s problem identified illegal, including the matter how long the Form B should be changed to form C, because form B is usually used for diplomatic car. If sold after two years of usage, it must be made form C to make its document like vehicle registration and other documents,” explained Arjaya. He also questioned why its Form B must be made in the Customs and Excise Office of Tanjung Priok, not at the Customs and Excise Office of Bali. “If necessary, we will catch up to Tanjung Priok,” said this politician from Sanur. As previously revealed, this imported car owners even did not pay taxes to the state. They preferred to pay fines when charged with traffic ticket rather than pay taxes. For the traffic ticket, the car owner only pays IDR 30,000, whereas if the owner has to pay taxes its value reaching IDR 25 million more per year. Although police issue traffic ticket every day, they still remain to get a profit. This is much different from the motorcycle owners belonging to small people. Just because not carrying vehicle registration, they can be charged with traffic ticket and prosecuted. Moreover, if they do
not have a motor’s document, they can be arrested because alleged to be a thief. Previously, Director of Traffic Affairs of Bali Police, Bambang Sugeng, explained at length about the super luxury Ferrari car. The police could only make arrests when the car moved off the road. Meanwhile, if the car is parked at place it could not be ticketed. As the car moved and the traffic ticket was issued, the owner of the car frankly admitted to have no vehicle registration and certificate of ownership. However, it only had the Form B belonging to the type of imported car. As long as the Form B was not followed up to get the Form C, and then the police will not be able to issue the vehicle registration and certificate of ownership. Unlike the case with vehicles assembled in Indonesia and the dealer directly issued invoice so the process of vehicle registration and certificate of ownership could be carried out here. According to the Law No.22/2009, the Ferrari vehicles not equipped with a vehicle registration could be charged by police by imposing an extra cheap fine namely IDR 30, 000. In imposing the ticket, the law does distinguish whether it is a fine luxury car or not. The law only regulates the types of vehicles. Up to these days, there has not been any explanation about for who actually the Form B is intended for? Is it for diplomatic affairs, embassy, or to foreign investment? Clearly speaking, those who drive the three Ferraris belong to ordinary people. Police also will conduct an investigation to a number of dealers alleged to channel super luxury vehicle to Bali, including the dealer on Jalan Teuku Umar, Denpasar. This well-known dealer was widely discussed recently by public of automotive lovers, including the police, parliament and the general public. If imported, such luxury vehicles must pass through customs procedure, including the Form A by Brand Holder Sole Agent (ATPM). Car owners would have to pay import duty namely the import duty taxes such as VAT, luxury sales tax and other taxes that have been determined. If the Form A was already paid, then the applicant will get a document of Form A to submit the document for vehicle registry office. Form A is a document provided by Customs and Excise as a proof of having paid import duty. Only after this process the vehicle could be registered to vehicle registry office. At this office, the owner will be charged 10 per cent according to the price of the vehicle. (by denpost)

Bali Residents Begins to Carry out Devotional Service Semarapura (Bali Post)—
By the festivity of temple anniversary at Pura Khayangan Jagat Penataran Ped, Nusa Penida, Wednesday (Feb 10), supporting devotees from local village and other devotees from Bali, began to implement devotional services at local temple. As seen, last Monday (Feb 8), in addition to supporting devotees from local village, hundreds of other Balinese devotees also provided services at the temple complex consisting of four temples. Local devotees eagerly started installing the shrine clothes, tedung, and other paraphernalia around the temples. Section Head of Ritual Affairs, I Ketut Sarjana, accompanied by the Chairman II, I Ketut Narsa met in the midst of devotional services said the temple supported by 65 customary hamlets of 20 customary villages have begun to work since last Monday (Feb1). However, out of the 65 customary hamlets, only 23 supporting hamlets were in charge for welcoming the grandiose anniversary at this time. “Of the overall supporting hamlets, in the implementation of ceremony it will be applied the alternate system,” said Sarjana. Given, the peak of temple anniversary will fall on Buda Wage Klawu (Wednesday 10), and worship for Ida Betara will be extended until next Monday (Feb 15). Meanwhile, the series of ceremony had been held since last Monday (Feb 1) and begun with purificatory rites. Then, Saturday (Feb 6) was continued by storing rice activities, which combined with a ceremony of putting down sanctified effigy and Ida Betara
was presented with embellishment session. On the peak of temple anniversary or pujawali, the ceremony will be preceded by melasti procession on Wednesday. Having held the peak of pujawali using bebangkit offering meaning grandiose festivity, next to closing ceremony, it will be held penganyar devotion. From the observation of Bali Post, at the temple consisting of Pura Segara, Pura Taman, Pura Ratu Gede, as well as the Pura Penataran Agung, a number of ritual paraphernalia were being worked by women of supporting hamlets. Similarly, men’s group was busy preparing other ritual paraphernalia, such as penjor and setting up clothes on some shrines of that temple. Along with the devotional activities held last Monday, Bali residents also handed over a donation amounted to 500 kg of rice. According to the mother of Agus, Made Suwitri, her son Agus came to hospital after her son Alit out of hospital after recovering from dengue fever. “After his brother recovered, his
elder brother followed,” she said when met at Gardenia Room last Monday (Feb 8). She also told that her two nephews were also treated at Gardenia Room of Sanglah Hospital. “I also had time to suffer from dengue fever but not until to be hospitalized,” added Suwitri. Gardenia Room accommodated ten children who received treatment for dengue fever where seven of them must be treated in the intensive room due to entering the Dengue Shock Syndrome phase (DSS). Based on data of 10 major diseases hospitalized at Sanglah Hospital in January, dengue fever ranked the first or approximately 37.68 percent or about 338 people, and then followed by chemotherapy and fever. Cases of theft from automatic teller machines (ATMs) are apparently still taking place. Although some perpetrators have been arrested by the joint force of Jakarta Police Headquarters and Bali Police, there are still a number of residents reporting such incidents. However, it remains unclear whether the same party is responsible. Poltabes Denpasar is still conducting an investigation to uncover more details about the case. According to information compiled on Monday (8 / 2), there are two people who claim that their bank accounts have been drained by criminals. In fact, after receiving an ATM print-out, their balance appeared to be zero. “The two victims claimed to have lost IDR 4.19 million,” said a Poltabes Denpasar officer yester-
day. The victims are Marta Putu Adi Dharma (35) and Thomas Danes (50) from Spain. Their savings were known to have been drained by the perpetrators on Saturday (6 / 2). “This case was reported to Poltabes Denpasar. We are still investigating this case and the perpetrators are being pursued,” said the officer. He explained that when the first victim, Adi Dharma, was reporting the crime to the police, he confessed to checking his accounts through BCA’s mobile banking service. After successfully accessing his account, its balance was suddenly zero, but he claimed there should have been a remaining balance of IDR 1.19 million. The victim was shocked upon realizing that his account was empty since he could not recall approving any such transaction.
The case was then reported to Poltabes Denpasar. Meanwhile, a similar incident happened to Thomas Danes. The victim, who lives in Guest House Bayu on Jalan Dyanapura, Seminyak-Kuta, is claiming that his bank balance has been completely drained. Thomas was checking his balance using the visa electro ATM of Commonwealth Bank. Apparently, his savings worth IDR 3 million had vanished. ‘’The victim also said he did not approve this transaction,” explained the Poltabes Denpasar officer. When asked for confirmation yesterday, Head of Bali Police Liason Kombes Pol. Gde Sugianyar verified that incidences of ATM theft had been experienced by both victims. ADELAIDE, Australia – Activists vowing to stop the killing of whales exchanged water-cannon fire with a Japanese whaling fleet they are tailing in the Antarctic Ocean. The Sea Shepherd conservation group said its ships, the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker, confronted the Japanese factory ship Nisshin Maru early Monday. “The factory ship turned on their water cannons and were surprised when the Steve Irwin responded with a more powerful water cannon that had a couple of the whalers diving for the bridge doors,” said a Monday statement from the group. Japanese Fisheries Agency official Shigeki Takaya condemned the use of water cannons. “As we have always said, we condemn the act. It is totally unforgivable,” he said. A Japanese foreign ministry official said Japan lodged a protest with the Netherlands and Togo over the water cannon fire in the Antarctic Ocean — the countries where the Steve Irwin and Bob Barker are registered. “We asked the respective governments to stop the ships from obstructing our whaling activities,” the official said, speaking anonymously, citing departmental policy. He declined to elaborate further. Sea Shepherd, a U.S.-based activist group, sends vessels to confront the Japanese fleet each year. Two major clashes have already occurred this year, one a collision that destroyed a Sea Shepherd vessel. Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson said his activists have prevented the whalers from catching any whales since Saturday. “We intend to turn these three whaling-free days into three whalingfree weeks,” Watson said in the statement. “I am confident that once again we will severely cut their kill quotas and we will once again negate their profits.” Japan has a six-vessel whaling fleet in Antarctic waters as part of its scientific whaling program, an allowed exception to the International Whaling Commission’s 1986 ban on commercial whaling. It hunts hundreds of mostly minke whales, which are not an endangered species. Whale meat not used for study is sold for consumption in Japan, which critics say is the real reason for the hunts. Watson estimated the whaling fleet has so far killed about 350 minke whales. Sea Shepherd activists try to block the whalers from firing harpoons, and they dangle ropes in the water to try to snarl the Japanese ships’ propellers. They also hurl packets of stinking rancid butter at their rivals. The whalers have responded by firing water cannons and sonar devices meant to disorient the activists. Collisions have occurred occasionally. The Sea Shepherd statement said its two vessels have enough fuel to pursue the whaling fleet for another month. “It does not matter where they go, east or west along the Antarctic Coast,” said Steve Irwin 1st Officer Locky MacLean. “We intend to stick to their rear like glue and we will not allow a single whale to be loaded onto the decks of that foul floating abattoir.”
The Defense Ministry released a statement saying another 70 people have been injured as rescuers continue to dig out hundreds of vehicles stuck on a snow-blocked pass north of Kabul. The avalanches took place Monday following heavy snows in the Salang Pass that links the Afghan capital with the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif and rescuers worked through the night to save more than 200 people, said Gen. Abdul Rahman Sayedkhail, Parwan provincial police chief. He said 54 people were injured. “It’s very heavy snow. We’re
cleaning the roads. So far, we have found 15 bodies, including women and children, he said. “There’s still danger from avalanches there so that’s why our work is a little slow,” Rahman said. About 100 Afghan soldiers were mobilized to join police and others in the rescue efforts, along with four helicopters, several ambulances and several bulldozers, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said. “Unfortunately there were more avalanches this morning which made our work a little difficult, but we are trying to rescue people,” he said. Military helicopters were dropping food packages to people stuck on snow-blocked roads, Interior Ministry spokesman Zemerai Bashary said.
Reports: Ukraine’s Tymoshenko to challenge vote AP
KIEV, Ukraine – Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has refused to concede the presidential race to opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych and plans to legally challenge the results, Ukrainian and Russian media reported Tuesday. Tymoshenko told officials with her party that she will “never recognize” the legitimacy of Sunday’s runoff election, the respected Ukrainskaya Pravda Web site and Russia’s ITAR-Tass news agency reported. The reports said Tymoshenko has instructed lawyers to mount a legal challenge and plans to demand a third round of voting. Tymoshenko has not yet issued any protest calls and on Monday she canceled two planned news conferences. She plans a news conference later Tuesday. Yanukovych is leading in the vote by 3.2 percent with almost all the ballots counted. Unlike past elections in Ukraine, international monitors have praised this vote as being free and fair. Tymoshenko’s campaign declined to comment on the reports, but her allies said they were getting ready to challenge the result. “A decision has been taken to challenge results in the individual polling stations and to demand a recount at those stations,” said Yelena Shustik, a deputy with the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc in parliament.
There are signs of dissent within Tymoshenko party ranks, however. Ukrainskaya Pravda and ITARTass cite deputy speaker Mykola Tomenko, also a member of Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, as saying at a party meeting Monday that Tymoshenko should accept defeat and take up her new role as the opposition. JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Two decades after a walk to freedom that captivated South Africa and the world, Nelson Mandela remains revered the world over but is rarely seen in public. The anti-apartheid icon’s minders jealously guard his privacy in a plush Johannesburg suburb, limiting the increasingly frail 91-year-old’s public engagements. “We don’t discuss his private life apart from saying that he sees friends and family and does what other normal retired people do, reads and watches TV,” Achmat Dangor, the chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said when asked what South Africa’s former president days’ entail. Mandela’s release after 27 years in prison on Feb. 11 1990 kicked off a frenzy of political negotiations with the then apartheid government that led to the end of the system of institutionalised racial discrimination and his becoming South Africa’s first black leader. The then 71-year-old became the symbol of reconciliation and was seen as the glue holding the country together. Admired and loved by all South Africans regardless of race, he slowly retreated from the limelight after stepping down as president in 1999. Mandela occasionally gives an
audience to visiting leaders or celebrities but even these visits have become rare and the foundation is forced every few months to deny reports his health is failing. KEEPS UP TO DATE
The foundation and friends say he is enjoying a well-deserved retirement, but tries to keep up to date with political developments. “He reads at least four newspapers a day next to his easy chair (and) he watches the news on television,” said George Bizos, the close friend, lawyer and activist who helped defend Mandela in his 1963 treason trial. But as you would expect for a man in his 90s, his memory is beginning to fade. “He receives old friends. His memory is not very good about recent matters, but it’s very, very good about what happened in the 40s, 50s and 60s and 70s,” Bizos told Reuters. Mandela’s primary focus is now his family and he steers clear of politics. The ruling ANC’s decision to parade him at a rally ahead of last year’s election was roundly condemned, including by his own foundation.
His influence on the country, though, cannot be underestimated, from his trademark shuffling dance to the famous donning of the springbok rugby jersey — a symbol of Afrikaner pride — when South Africa won the 1995 rugby World Cup. That act united the nation for the first time in its history and inspired the movie Invictus and an academy award nomination for Morgan Freeman, who played the president. Media houses are now more preoccupied with his state of health, and at any public engagement, his appearance is scrutinised for any change. “As he is aging he has to have more and more rest, but unfortunately every now and then the media picks up from somewhere and spreads it that he is on his last lap, which is all nonsense, it’s just that he takes things easy,” friend and fellow ex-political prisoner Ahmed Kathrada said. “But he is fine, as a person of (nearly) 92 can be.” Mandela, himself shrugs off the concern. “I do feel like I am getting old. Time is flying. I’m not really worried,” he was quoted by SAPA news agency saying this month.
TIJUANA, Mexico – Mexican federal police arrested two suspected gang leaders Monday, delivering another big blow to a brutal drug cartel that terrorized the border city of Tijuana for several years. The capture of Raydel Lopez Uriarte and Manuel Garcia Simental apparently wipes out the existing leadership of the cartel headed by Teodoro Garcia Simental, who was captured last month. Teodoro and Manuel Garcia are brothers. Lopez, known as “El Muletas,” and Garcia, known as “El Chiquilin,” were arrested Monday in La Paz, a city in the southern end of the Baja California peninsula, said Amy Roderick, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Mexico’s Public Security Department confirmed the arrests in a brief statement, describing Manual Garcia as the gang’s leader after his brother’s arrest and Lopez as the current secondin-command. It said the arrests were the result of leads starting with the capture of Teodoro Garcia in La Paz on Jan. 12, but offered no further details on the operations. Roderick said there were no U.S. indictments pending against the suspects. The gang was known for its brutality, having executed, beheaded and mutilated hundreds of rivals in Tijuana, which is across the U.S. border from San Diego. Gang members pinned notes to corpses and dissolved bodies in caustic soda.
Tedoro Garcia’s arrest netted 19 mobile phones and two laptop computers. Twelve more cartel suspects were arrested in two raids in late January, including two men and a women who were allegedly about to dissolve a body in a bathtub with chemicals. Manuel Garcia is the youngest of three brothers. The oldest brother, Marco Antonio, was arrested in a shootout with Mexican authorities in Tijuana in 2004. Teodoro Garcia was once considered a top hit man for Tijuana’s dominant drug gang, the family-run Arellano-Felix cartel. He launched a new group affiliated with the Sinaloa cartel after law enforcement arrested or killed most of the Tijuana cartel leaders in 2008. The splintered organizations have been involved in a violent turf battle in Tijuana, a valuable trafficking corridor to the U.S. More than 1,500 people have been murdered in Tijuana since the beginning of 2008. Across the country, more than 15,000 people have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched a crackdown on cartels when he took office three years ago. More than 2,500 of the killings occurred last year in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. The military announced Monday that soldiers had seized more than 12 tons of marijuana found beneath a false floor of a tractor trailer. The drugs were found during a routine search at a checkpoint near San Felipe, a town in the central part of the Baja California peninsula.

The West fears that Iran’s enrichment program is ultimately geared toward military purposes — a charge Iran denies. On Tuesday, the spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters the higher enrichment will be done with the cooperation and supervision of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, adding that “if other countries or the agency could provide the fuel, our attitude can be different as well.” Mehmanparast said any plan by the West to impose new Security Council resolutions would not be helpful. “If they attempt another resolution, they are making a mistake. It is not helpful in resolving the nuclear dispute between Iran and the West,” he said. “They are completely wrong if they think our people will back down even a single step.” Salehi said Iran has been trying to buy the higher enriched fuel for its research reactor for the past several months, but the West made providing
the fuel conditional on Iran’s acceptance of a U.N.-drafted agreement to ship its uranium stockpile abroad first. That plan would come with some safeguards, because the enriched fuel provided to Iran would be in a form that would be difficult to further process to make weapons. Salehi said Iran would begin 20 percent enrichment on Tuesday by injecting gas into a cascade of centrifuge machines. Salehi said Iran needs some 1.5 kilograms of 20 percent enriched uranium a month for the Tehran research reactor, which produces medical isotopes. Salehi said 164 centrifuge machines were ready in a laboratory in Iran’s main enrichment facility in the city of Natanz to produce 3 to 5 kilograms of higher enriched uranium per month. Salehi said inspectors from the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency are expected to be present when Iran begins the higher enrichment. “The agency continues to have inspectors in Iran conducting normal safeguard operations,” IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said Tuesday when asked if they would be present. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates believed the United Nations should slap new sanctions on Iran in “weeks, not months.”

JAKARTA - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators were on Tuesday scheduled to question three former members of parliament for allegedly having received bribes. “They are to be questioned as suspects in the alleged bribery case relating to the selection of Miranda Goeltom as Bank Indonesia (BI) senior deputy governor in 2004,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi said. The suspects are Udju Djuhaeri,Dudie Makmun Murod and Endin A.J. Soefihara, former members of the House of Representatives’ (DPR) commission for financial and banking affairs. In this case, KPK had also named former legislator Hamka Yandhu as a suspect.
Hamka was also involved in alleged bribery committed by certain former BI officials with Indonesian Banking Development Foundation (YPPI) funds. In addition to them, KPK had also summoned some other active and former members of parliament regarding the Miranda Gultom case. Among them are Panda Nababan, Nurdin Halid, MS. Hidayat, Achmad Hafiz Zawawi, TM. Nurlif, Baharuddin Aritonang, and Daniel Tanjung. The alleged bribery case was re-
vealed to the public after Agus Condro, former House member of the Indonesian Democratic PartyStruggle faction, confessed that he had received a bank cheque. Agus Condro said the bank cheque totaling Rp500 million (US$1=Rp9,480) was received following the BI Senior Deputy Governor’s fit and proper test, which was won by Miranda Gultom. Some other House members also received the same bank cheques, he said. Members of parliament and government officials remain vulnerable to corruption practices as shown by various cases over the past few years. Thanks to KPK’s ongoing efforts, Indonesia’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) improves from 2.0 in 2004 to 2.8 in 2009.

JAKARTA - Attorney General Hendarman Supandji said his office was still seeking presidential permission to question nine regional administration chiefs suspected of criminal offenses. “We need to question 13 regional government heads but so far we received presidential permission to do so on four of them,” Hendarman said at a
hearing with the House of Representatives (DPR)’s Commission III here Monday. Earlier, an Attorney General’s Office (AGO) spokesman had said the office had already received the president’s green light to take legal actions against Pasuruan Dsitrict Chief Dade Angga and Banyuwangi District Chief Ratna Ani Lestari for alleged corruption. Questioning of the two officials by the AFO had already begun.
Hendarman said under existing regulations, state officials, including regional district chiefs or their deputies, suspected of criminal offenses could be detained or questioned by law enforcing agencies only after written permission was obtained from the president. So far, he claimed, the AGO had not met with any hurdles in following the rule on presidential permission to take legal action against state officials.
JAKARTA - Deputy Attorney General Darmono said Singapore had remained the favorite haven for wanted corrupters from Indonesia. “Singapore is the favorite place to hide for wanted corrupters,” he said after meeting with House Commission III here on Monday. Darmono, the leader of a team currently hunting fleeing corrupters said most of the 18 corrupters currently being sought are in Singapore. He said corrupters always seek countries where they can get a stay permit easily. “They are looking for a safe state to stay,” he said. He admitted he had received information that one of the 18 corrupters now being sought after

PALEMBANG - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Tuesday witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the opening of an Indonesian School of Journalism. The MoU was signed by Indonesian Journalists (PWI) Chairman Margiono, Education Minister Mohammad Nuh, South Sulawesi Governor Alex Noerdin and a senior UNESCO official. The MoU’s signing was part of several events here to mark the 64th Indonesian Press Day. Speaking to reporters after meeting with President Yudhoyono in Jakarta late last January, Margiono said Indonesian schools of journalism would be set up in six cities. The cities would be Jakarta, Semarang (Central Java), Makassar (South Sulawesi), Samarinda (East Kalimantan), Palembang (South Sumatra) and Pekanbaru (Riau). In the future, every province would have at least one school of journalism to help improve the professionalism of its journalists. As part of the Press Day anniversary, a number of Indonesian journalists were presented with tokens of professional appreciation. Among the tokens were a “Number One Press Card”, the Adinegoro, Spirit of Journalism, and Gold Pen awards. According to Priyambodo RH, a committee member, the “Number One Press Card” token was given to journalists who had dedicated their lives to the pursuit of press freedom. “This award is meant to show to the public media people with high achievement which can inspire young journalists to follow their professional footprints,” he

If a journalist just reported factual facts in a conflict-hit area without filtering them so that, as a result, the situation became worse, it meant that he/she just chose a “small truth”. Instead, if a journalist exercised self-censorship by reporting the facts that would not worsen the situation, he/she had prioritized a “big truth”, President Yudhoyono said. At that time, the PWI also awarded the head of state with the Press Freedom Gold Medal for his strong support and respect for press freedom in asking for media’s response to his complaints. President Yudhoyono was recorded as an individual who had most frequently used his rights to get media responses to his complaints of news reporting from 2005 through 2008. The Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) was noted as an institution, which was the most frequent use of rights to get media reply to its news complaints in 2008.

Regency Government in this case only provided money to an applicant who was ready to work overseas. In implementing the overseas job placement program, Gianyar Regency Government in the year 2010 allocates considerable funds for communities wishing to work overseas. Different from the previous year, where in 2009 to support the program the government only allocated funds amounting to IDR 500 million, with the departure of only two workers. Directions Simmer the meat in water to cover, together with the salt, until tender. Remove and slice the meat in 1x2 cm cubes. Set aside 1 Liter of the broth. Directions Slice the tempe in thin 3½ x 5 cm squares. Set aside. Mix the spice-paste together with the water and slaked lime water. Add the rice flour and cornstarch and blend till smooth. FRANKFURT - China overtook Germany last year to become the world’s leading exporter as German trade suffered its sharpest slump since 1950, figures from Germany’s national statistics office showed on Tuesday. “According to information of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Chinese exports amounted to 1,201.7 billion dollars (876.5 billion euros), while German exports totalled 1,121.3 billion dollars” last year, the Destatis office said. The total value of 2009 German exports came to 803.2 billion euros, a drop of 18.4 percent, while imports fell by 17.2 percent to 667.1 billion euros compared with 2008, the Destatis office said in a statement. “This was the highest decline recorded in foreign trade in relation to both imports and exports since 1950,” the statement said. Europe’s largest economy also reported, however, that its exports were 3.4 percent higher in December compared to December 2008 — the first year-on-year gain since October 2008 and a key indication that a recovery is
underway. Imports fell by 6.5 percent over the same period. Compared with November 2009, exports were 3.0 percent higher and imports gained 4.5 percent, further signs of a pick up in global trade that should help Germany pull out of its worst recession since World War II. Germany posted a trade surplus of 136.1 billion euros for 2009, though that was down from the 178.3 billion euros recorded in 2008. The economy shrank by five percent in 2009 but as consumption and exports slowly recover, the government has forecast growth of 1.4 percent this year. Germany benefits in particular from EU trade, which accounted for 62.7 percent of its exports last year, providing 503.5 billion euros in revenues. “At least there is one reliable
source of growth,” ING senior economist Carsten Brzeski said. “Since March last year, German exports have increased by more than 10 percent.” He noted however that the latest German data releases indicate the recovery lost steam in the fourth quarter of 2009 but stressed that the overall picture was better than it seemed. Inventory building would continue to underpin economic activity and trade should get a boost from the euro’s fall against the dollar owing to fears generated by the Greek debt crisis. The weaker euro was “bound to be a boon to European exporters,” said Howard Archer, chief economist for IHS Global Insight, a research consultancy in London. Brzeski concluded that “the road might be bumpy but it is the road to recovery and not a dead-end street.”

BIRMINGHAM - China believes the yuan should remain “basically stable” in the face of international calls for it to be strengthened, Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Zhong Shan said here on Monday. “We can’t allow too-large moves” in the yuan,” Zhong also told reporters attending a trade fair in Birmingham, which is Britain’s second largest city.
Zhong acknowledged that there was a little room for movement in China’s currency but stressed that the rate of appreciation would depend on economic conditions. The value of the Chinese currency, which has effectively been pegged to the US dollar since mid2008, has been a bone of contention between Beijing and its Western trading partners, which say it is kept low to boost exports. G7 finance ministers and central bankers were believed to have dis-
cussed China’s currency at talks in northern Canada over the weekend. At the start of the meeting, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told reporters the yuan’s level was “an issue that concerns Western industrialised countries represented in the G7.” The G7 brings together Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States but has now been eclipsed by the G20, which includes major emerging markets such as Brazil, China, India and Russia.

LONDON - Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz has warned Britain not to withdraw its fiscal stimulus, saying markets are a “crazy man” that spending cuts will not tame, in an interview published Tuesday. Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 2001 and served as an economic adviser to former US president Bill Clinton, warned that removing the stimulus too early could plunge the country back into recession. “You’re dealing with a crazy man,” he told the Independent newspaper, referring to the current state of financial markets. “You’re asking what I can do to placate a crazy man? Having got what he wants he will still kill you.” Official data revealed at the end of last month showed that Britain’s battered economy grew by just 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009, ending the country’s deepest recession in modern history. However, the anaemic growth rate disappointed many economists because market expectations had been for stronger
expansion of 0.4 percent. Removing emergency measures introduced to combat the downturn made slipping back into recession more likely, Stiglitz warned. “It there is a premature withdrawal of stimulus it is more likely that there will be a ‘double dip,’” he said. A “double-dip” recession refers to a recession followed by a shortlived recovery, which is cut short by a fall back into negative growth. Britain’s fragile economy and the inevitable cuts needed to rein in huge debts are a key political battleground ahead of an election that must be held by June, and which the ruling Labour government is tipped to lose. Stiglitz also criticised US President Barack Obama’s plan to break up banks, saying it “doesn’t go far enough”, and said Britain’s record on the issue was better. “What (Prime Minister Gordon) Brown has done in terms of banks so far is far better that what the US did; he demanded better compensation for providing money, better accountability, better attempts to restart lending, than in the US,” said the economist.

TOKYO - Japan’s Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Monday agreed with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to help grow the economy of the Palestinian territories, officials said. Hatoyama and Abbas, in Japan for a four-day visit, also agreed that Israel and the Palestinian territories “urgently” needed to resume peace talks as soon as possible, the officials said. In a joint statement issued after their meeting at the prime minister’s office, Hatoyama expressed “Japan’s readiness to help the Palestinians further build a viable economy and develop capable governing institutions.” The two leaders agreed that developing the private sector was a priority, according to the statement. As a first step, Japan will send trade experts to the territories to help promote trade and investment, it said. At a joint news conference, Abbas thanked Tokyo for its financial and diplomatic support, which has topped one billion dollars, saying: “Japan’s assistance considerably
helps heal the agony of the Palestinian people.” He also stressed the need for a resumption of stalled Middle East peace talks “based on the roadmap” designed by the West in 2003 calling for a two-state solution. “In the meeting with Prime Minister Hatoyama, I reiterated the importance of achieving peace comprehensively and impartially,” Abbas said. Hatoyama backed the remarks, saying: “President Abbas plays an extremely important role in the peace process. Japan will support his effort to achieve peace.” Abbas has agreed in principle to indirect talks with Israel under US mediation but has requested a number of guarantees, a Palestinian official in the West Bank told AFP on condition of anonymity Monday. The latest US proposal for renewing talks suspended more than a year ago would have the two sides hold three months of indirect negotiations and have Israel make several goodwill gestures to the Palestinians. Dr. Conrad Murray pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter and a judge released him on $75,000 bail. Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz ordered Murray to turn in his passport and said he could travel within the U.S., but not to any foreign country. The prosecutor had suggested he might flee to his native Grenada or to Trinidad where he has a child. Murray was ordered to return April 5 to have another date set for his preliminary hearing. That proceeding, a virtual mini-trial, will disclose the evidence prosecutors maintain will demonstrate Murray’s “gross negligence.” Murray is accused of giving Jackson a fatal dose of an anesthetic to help him sleep. Jackson died June 25. If convicted, the doctor could face up to four years in prison. Schwartz told Murray he was restricting his practice of medicine, barring him from using any anesthetic agent, specifically the drug propofol which a coroner’s report found was the cause of Jackson’s death with other
drugs as contributing factors. “I don’t want you sedating people,” the judge said. Immediately after the hearing, Latoya Jackson issued a statement saying she believed her brother had been murdered and that others besides Murray were involved in his death. “I will continue to fight until all of the proper individuals are brought forth and justice is served,” Latoya said. She was in court along with siblings including, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Randy. Her father Joe Jackson expressed the same views Monday night in an interview on Larry King Live and claimed that his son believed he was going to be murdered. He did not elaborate. As he left the courtroom, the family patriarch said, “We need justice.” Outside the Los Angeles airport area courthouse, about 50 Michael Jackson fans carried large photographs of the superstar and signs urging, “Justice for Michael.” Many were the same fans who had stood vigil during the 2005 trial at which Jackson was acquitted of child molestation. Some shouted “mur-
derer” when Murray was brought to court. Murray recently reopened his office in Houston after months of waiting to be charged while his bills piled up. A representative of the state attorney general’s office said the California Medical Board would be filing a motion to revoke Murray’s medical license to practice in California while he awaits trial. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren tried to convince the judge to impose a high bail of $300,000. He said in his motion that although Murray has no criminal record, he has violated court orders involving child support payments and “leads an irresponsible and financially unstable life.” Murray’s lead lawyer, Ed Chernoff, objected that Murray should not be penalized for not having money. The judge said he believed $75,000 — triple the bail in ordinary cases of this nature, would be enough to ensure he does not flee. The bail was posted shortly after the hearing and Murray was released.

WASHINGTON – People who drink at least two sugary sodas a week have an increased risk of developing cancer of the pancreas, and researchers suspect the culprit is sugar, a new study shows. Analyses of data collected on 60,524 Singapore Chinese adults showed that people who drank two or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks a week were at greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer compared with individuals who did not, the study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention says. No link was found between drinking juice and pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most rapidly fatal cancers in adults, with less than five percent of patients surviving five years or more after being diagnosed with the illness. The study was the first to look at the role fizzy drinks and juice play in the development of pancreatic cancer in Asians, whose diet and lifestyle are becoming more and more Western, the study says. The findings of the study were adjusted for other dietary factors which have been linked with pancreatic cancer, such as consumption of red meat. “But the adjustments did not change the link between soda and the risk of pancreas cancer,” said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota’s division of epidemiology and community health, one of the authors of the study. “We suspect sugar is the culprit, but we cannot prove it from this study,” Pereira told AFP, adding that the researchers only looked at carbonated sugar-sweetened beverages, not sports drinks or diet soft drinks. “A typical serving of soda is 20
ounces and contains 65 grams of sugar. By comparison, a typical serving of orange juice is eight ounces and contains 21 grams of sugar,” Pereira said. Fizzy drinks are “the leading sources of added sugar in the US diet” and greatly contribute to hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, and hyperinsulemia — when the amount of insulin in the blood is higher than normal — the study says. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and helps regulate blood sugar. If the findings of the study are confirmed, then cutting out sugar-sweetened sodas would be a way to reduce the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, and this would be “important due to the poor prognosis and minimal effect of conventional treatment methods” for the cancer, the study says. The data analyzed for the soda study came from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, which enrolled more than 63,000 Singapore Chinese who lived in government housing estates — as nearly nine in 10 people in Singapore do — and looked at their diets, physical activity and medical history, among others.

Different Colors Describe Happiness vs. Depression ARE you in a gray mood today? How about a blue funk? Maybe you’re seeing red, because you’re green with jealousy. The colors we use to describe emotions may be more useful than you think, according to new research. The study found that people with depression or anxiety were more likely to associate their mood with the color gray, while happier people preferred yellow. The results, which are detailed today in the journal BMC Medical Research Methodology, could help doctors gauge the moods of children and other patients who have trouble communicating verbally. “This is a way of measuring anxiety and depression which gets away from the use of language,” study coauthor and gastroenterologist Peter Whorwell of University Hospital South Manchester told LiveScience. “What is very interesting is that this might actually be a better way of capturing the patient’s mood than questions.” Colors are often used as metaphors for moods, but no one had systematically researched color associations, Whorwell said. To investigate, he and his colleagues picked eight colors red, orange, green, purple, blue, yellow, pink and brown - and split each into four shades. They then added white, black and four shades of gray for a total of 38 options. After meeting with focus groups, the researchers
decided to display the colors in the form of a wheel. Next, they recruited 105 healthy adults, 110 anxious adults and 108 depressed adults and mailed them printouts of the color wheel. Each person was asked to pick their favorite color, as well as the color they were most “drawn to.” Finally, they were asked to pick a color that described their day-to-day mood over the last several months. Another group of 204 healthy volunteers classified each color as positive, negative or neutral. Whether depressed, anxious or healthy, people liked blue and yellow. Blue 28 on the color wheel was the most popular favorite color among healthy people, while Blue 27 (which is a little darker than 28) got first place among people with anxiety and depression. Meanwhile,Yellow 14 was picked as the color most likely to catch the eye. But when it came to mood, the groups diverged. Only 39 percent of healthy people associated their mood with a color at all. Of those who did, Yellow 14 was the most popular choice, with about 20 percent of the votes. Meanwhile, about 30 percent of people with anxiety picked a shade of gray, as did more than half of depressed volunteers. In comparison, healthy volunteers described their mood with a shade of gray only about 10 percent of the time. The researchers also found that when assigning a mood to colors, saturation matters.

NEW YORK – A disappointing outlook from Electronic Arts Inc. sent shares of the video game publisher sharply lower Monday, a sign that significant cost-cuts and layoffs have not ended the company’s slump. The company, whose games include the popular “Madden” series and “Mass Effect 2,” said Monday it narrowed its net loss in the last quarter even as game sales declined. It blamed the revenue falloff on having fewer titles than
it did in the 2008 holiday period. EA also cited weak sales in Europe, which accounts for about a third of its revenue. The results for the October-December period were not a surprise, because EA had warned in January it would miss forecasts, leading analysts to lower their estimates. The company lost $82 million, 20 cents per share. In the same period a year earlier it lost $641 million, $2 per share. Revenue fell 25 percent to $1.24 billion. Accounting for deferred revenue in games with online components, EA
earned 33 cents per share, down from 56 cents per share a year earlier. Analysts were expecting 31 cents, according to Thomson Reuters. But the company gave a forecast below Wall Street’s expectations for the current quarter, even though it is launching several big-name titles during the period. One is the science-fiction epic “Mass Effect 2.” Chief Financial Officer Eric Brown said in an interview the game has sold 2 million copies so far. EA ran its first-ever Super Bowl ad Sunday to promote the upcoming “Dante’s Inferno.”

Pau Gasol had a versatile effort with 21 points, 19 boards, eight assists and five blocks while Lamar Odom had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the defending NBA champions. Los Angeles (40-13) were not only without Bryant, who has missed two straight games because of an injured left ankle, but starting center Andrew Bynum was also absent with a hip ailment. “We have quality players and with Kobe and Andrew out we had to play hard and play team basketball,” Gasol told reporters. “You have to fight through. The Swede showed no signs of the elbow complaint which knocked him out of the Australian Open first round. But the third seed admitted that he could have used a quicker start. “The first match of the week is always the most difficult for me,” said the 2009 Roland Garros finalist. “I could have had a better start. “But my game got better and better. I know I can play a lot better. I’m satisfied with the win but not really with my form.” The victory was the first of the season for Soderling after losses in Chennai and Melbourne last month. NEW DELHI – India’s wealthiest man Mukesh Ambani denied Tuesday a British newspaper report that he was in a race to take over Liverpool football club. But another Indian businessman reportedly in the running for the Merseyside club appeared more circumspect. The Times of London reported that Ambani, the world’s seventhrichest man, was one of two tycoons from the subcontinent competing to purchase a stake in Liverpool. The paper said Ambani’s Reliance Industries and Sahara Group chairman Subrata Roy had each tendered similar bids to pay off Liverpool’s 237 million pound (370 million dollar) debts in return for a 51 percent stake in the club. “There is no truth to the report. We deny it completely,” Reliance spokeswoman Sudeep Purkayastha told AFP. Ambani is worth 19.5 billion dollars from his investment in Reliance Industries, a petrochemicals giant, according to Forbes business magazine. In 2008, Ambani created the
Mumbai Indians, one of the eight teams in cricket’s Indian Premier League (IPL). The newspaper said Roy’s interest in Liverpool appeared “more serious”. His Sahara conglomerate said it could neither confirm nor deny that a bid was in the offing. “We are presently not in a position to comment,” Sahara spokesman Abhijit Sarkar told AFP. Sahara has been linked with ownership of one of the next IPL franchises, possibly to be based in the northern Indian city of Lucknow, where the group is headquartered. Sahara was linked with shirt sponsorship of Manchester United last February, but the deal fell through. Liuzzi says 2010 a fresh start for him VITANTONIO Liuzzi is viewing 2010 as a fresh start for his career, after finally getting a proper opportunity to show what he can do in Formula 1. The Italian says he has never felt more at home in an F1 team, having had difficult times at Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso in the past few years. “In Force India I feel really good, the atmosphere is great and the team works well together,” he said. “Even when I was in a difficult position last year as a test driver they were very supportive and I’ve built a good strong relationship with them. “I feel like I’m in a family and for sure much better environment than I have been in the past. This year is a new start for me. I’m a different person from two years ago and I am approaching it from a different mentality. “It’s a different Tonio and I’m looking forward to what can come. I’m still young and have a lot of time in front of me so I just want to prove what I can do.” Liuzzi is equally upbeat about the potential of the team’s new car,
which will have its first test at Jerez in Spain on Wednesday. “I have to say that the team, looking at what we did last year, has done a fantastic job,” he said. “They never stopped working on the 2009 car to push right to the end, but have been
flat out for 2010 as well. “I am really confident in the work they have done over the winter and we’ve built a car that can regularly be in the points. That’s also my aim, plus to be more consistent and competitive throughout the whole season.”

Despite both teams insisting they are on course to make the first race, US F1 and Campos continue to be surrounded by speculation that financial issues will leave them unable to get their cars and outfits ready for the season opener in Bahrain on March 14. Although under old rules absence from a single race would result in the teams losing their privileges, F1 supreme Bernie Ecclestone and Todt have now confirmed that provisions are in place for competitors to miss a total of three races without penalty. This means that US F1 and Campos have theoretically got until the Chinese Grand Prix on April 18 to get their cars ready for action before they fall off the roster. This situation means that Serbian hopefuls Stefan GP have no chance of being granted a late entry before Shanghai - despite their eagerness to race. Speaking to media this week, Todt confirmed the three race rule and warned Stefan GP that there was nothing automatic about it getting an entry if US F1 or Campos do not make it. “Having less money may even be healthy, but in the meantime we’ll have 13 teams in F1 this year,” he
was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. “In the final version of the Concorde Agreement it’s written that a team may be absent for three races. But if a team can’t go on, it’s not a given that another team comes in. It’s up to the FIA to decide who has the requisites.” Todt has urged a rethink of priorities in F1 - and thinks the sport needs to wake up to economic and environmental realities that the world is facing. “We need to cut costs, improve the show and draw investors,” he said. “F1 must understand that the world has changed. How can you explain that an F1 car needs 80 litres of fuel to cover 100 kilometres? “I don’t like the cost cap; we must get to a reduction through clear rules, for example with a single aerodynamic package for the entire year. Will the cars slide more in Monte Carlo? [Perhaps, but] then the quality of the drivers will be heightened.” He added: “It’s not acceptable to have given up with KERS. The teams complain that it costs too much? Then they must find the way to save money. The teams are sensitive when we talk about lap times, less sensitive when the environment is discussed.”
