BEIJING – North Korea’s reclusive leader Kim Jong-Il arrived in China on Monday, officials said, at a time of tension over the sinking of a South Korean warship and his communist regime’s nuclear ambitions. Some analysts said the rare trip to North Korea’s sole major ally could reinvigorate stalled six-nation talks on dismantling Kim’s atomic programme. But mystery over the warship’s destruction clouds any hopes for early dialogue. “Kim arrived at about five this morning,” said an official at the Friendship Bridge tourist site, at northeastern China’s Dandong border crossing with North Korea.
“We received a notice from the Public Security Bureau and the army that we should shut down tourist operations in the morning,” the official told AFP by telephone. Rail officials in China’s Liaoning province also confirmed that a special train from North Korea crossed into the country early on Monday, but the Chinese foreign ministry refused immediate comment. It is Kim’s first trip in more than four years to China, North Korea’s main source of finance, food and fuel. Bali News Small opportunity for two rounds TUESDAY, May 4, will become the new records for the passage of democracy in Bali. A series of regional elections organized simultaneously in five regencies / city across Bali will enter into a determining round namely regional head elections. As a result, the certainty about the holders of power can have been estimated to whom it will belong. Potential of the two-round electoral possibility should also be estimated. Bali Electoral Commission ensured in three out of five regencies, namely Tabanan, Badung and Denpasar, the regional head election would last for one round. Meanwhile, the chance of two rounds possibly happened in Bangli and Karangasem. However, this opportunity was categorized to be small, why? Related to the increasing number of figures feeling appropriate to be a leader can be seen in the elections of Karangasem and Bangli. The candidates coming into view and fighting till the end of round numbered more than three packages of candidate. Bangli offered five packages and Karangasem offered four packages. Then, Tabanan had three pairs, while in Badung and Denpasar would run head to head battle. Observing the large number of couples involved in the regional elections in Karangasem and Bangli, based on calculation and logic, the two regencies had the potential to run for two rounds. This assumption was certainly based on the calculation of valid votes divided by the number of packages fighting for the results of which less than 30 percent. Chairman of Bali Electoral Commission Lanang Perbawa Sukawati explained that to win as a candidate of regional head, the candidate had to obtain at least 30 percent of valid votes. If there would be the same balance, then to determine the winner would be based on which package won the largest support more than 30 percent. It was logical and legal basis to evaluate the potential occurrence of two rounds on the May 4 regional elections. Observing this situation, the regency having the potential to go two rounds were Karangasem and Bangli. Meanwhile, in three other regencies, the opportunity was closed even though the regional Electoral Commission has budgeted for two-round elections. However, the calculations based on four to five packages delivering two rounds seemed not to ensure that Bangli and Karangasem would run into two rounds. Based on monitoring of Bali Post in these two regencies, although there were many packages the concentration of the mass in the two regencies was only focused on two packages. This means the support of the mass to packages in the two regencies was imbalanced. In Karangasem, the election was followed by four packages, namely Gredeg-Sukarena, Sudirta-Astawa, Kertia-Cok Sutedja and Bagiartha-Lanang Rudiartha. Seemingly, the public choice would be dominant to the two packages only. Without mentioning which package was stronger, Bali Post noted in the fight between the four
packages in Karangasem at least two packages had a stronger chance of reaching the support of 30 percent in the first round. In other words, the election of Karangasem would also end in a single round. As an illustration, Karangasem had around 324,000 registered voters with election budgets of IDR 11 billion for two rounds. However, based on estimation of Bali Post’s reporter in Karangasem, the election would also end in single round. Bali Post also predicted a similar condition in Bangli. Although there were five packages, Ludra-Durpa, Gunawan-AA Ardjana, GianyarSedana Arta, Brahmaputra-Winujaya and ArsadaLesmawan, - however, reporter of Bali Post in Bangli was also on the estimation that the election would end in single round. It was also based on the distribution of mass concentration and mass movement during the campaign period which was dominated by two couples of candidate. Reporter of Bali Post in charge in Bangli bureau asserted there were two candidates struggling for voters around 168,000. Virtually, it could be ascertained there would be a candidate in Bangli attained over 30 percent of votes as a requirement to win the election within a single round, moreover, its calculation was based on valid votes. A political observer who was also a former politician, Wayan Suantina, assessed the little potential of two rounds although there were many packages in Bangli and Karangasem. It represented an accumulated form of public intelligence in their political life. Voters would no longer be stuck on the promise and figures but they had been looking at the moral force brought by the candidates. Level of regional loyalty and integrity of the package was also very dominant. He said the imbalance of strength among the candidates did not result in the strict vote balance. “Concentration of votes that could be estimated from the beginning on the particular packages would also make the potential for two rounds in Bangli and Karangasem relatively small. The mass of voters seemed to have not moved too much despite there would be possibility of dawn attack strategy,” said the lecturer at Warmadewa University. (dir)
Banana wars at Dauh Tukad, Tenganan:
Psychological tests for candidates of village leaders Customary villagers of Tenganan Dauh Tukad, Manggis, Karangasem, have unique tradition of recruiting candidates for village leaders. Candidates for village apparatus were educated in local custom since childhood or in stages. One of the traditional processions used to recruit the candidates for village leaders is through the mesabatsabatan biu (banana war). Related to ceremony held in the third month (according to calendar of local village being somewhat different from the Balinese calendar), according to a number of prominent local figures, it is intended for psychological test for prospective leaders in the village. The test is followed by two village youths who have been selected by various criteria. After performing the ceremony in the third month, two months later around in July it will be held ngusaba sambah with its unique traditions mageret pandan (pandanus war). Two pairs of village youths fight bitterly on a platform and scratch each other with weapons made from thorny pandanus leaves. Blood gushes from the puncture due to pandanus thorns. However, they already have the antiseptic medicine made from herbal tubers and after the procession it is smeared throughout the wounds. The wound is not until causing infection and within a few days will dry up and recover. Nyoman Sadra, a former village chief of Tenganan, said the procession denoted a war heritage and continued as tradition of the war exercise. As consequence, residents would be strong physically and mentally. This tradition represented the knight life where the Tenganan community inherited the characteristic as devotees of Hindu under Indra sect. It is believed that Lord Indra is the god of war. Meanwhile, banana war tradition at Tenganan Dauh Tukad was held last Saturday (May 1), centered in front of the Bale Agung temple. Other than, the mesabat-sabatan activity, the offerings in the ceremony was also unique. Uniquely, some living beings were symbolized by unique assorted cakes. The three offerings were essentially an invocation of
safety and expression of gratitude to the Creator for the prosperity bestowed to the village. In order to continue the village leadership, it was recruited prospective leaders. They were two handsome young men, consisting of saya (officer) and his deputy candidates called penampih. Both candidates of leaders bore two woven bamboo basket containing bananas entering the main road from the front of the Dalem Majapahit temple or from the south end of the village. Meanwhile, 40 kasinoman (ordinary members) and village youth club were ready to welcome. Each of them brought a coconuts and one slice of banana. Once the procession began, the saya and penampih began to run. They were both cheered by kasinoman and the banana throw was begun from kasinoman. Saya and penampih counterattack them by throwing the bananas in the basket while continuing to walk heading for the front of the Bale Agung temple. Both were busy holding the attacks and responded, despite they carried two baskets of bananas. In this procession, it is clear that both leader candidates be alert and agile with physical and psychological attacks. Although only consisting of two people, both leaders were not up to the verge of defeat, even they looked superior to resist the tens of kasinoman. There’s nothing made them angry or upset, but the procession went on with full of laughter and familial atmosphere until the end of procession. Later, the two men would be elected chief of customary youth club (for the unmarried) and if they have got married they were entitled to become village head, if village apparatus had been old or due to other obstacles, he should resign. After the procession, children of the village were served with banana urab-uraban food. Chief of customary youth club, Nengah Budiana, said that actually the members of youth club were 89. However, since some were absent due to reasons of attending school or working outside the village. It was added the material of such rituals like bananas and coconuts were the result of agricultural land of local village. (bud)

Upset, Mat Salim Shoots a Girl Tabanan (Bali Post) -
Annoyed by, a girl, I Gusti Putu Ayu Yuni Arisanti (21) residents of Banjar Sangging, Kelating, Kerambitan shot with an air riffle by Mat Salim (34). She was injured in the right and left hip due to the shooting by Mat Salim who was guarding cage of chickens owned by I Gusti Made Sutama in Banjar Sangging, Saturday (1 / 5). Yuni was finally taken to BRSUD Tabanan for treatment. The incident happened at about 9:15 pm last Saturday. Initially, the victim is outside the chicken coop owned by I Gusti Made Sutama and guarded Mat Salim, a resident of Klocing, Petemon, Pakusari, Jember of East Java. Mat salim was upset because his boss’s chicken got stressed caused by the frequent disturbance, then shot Yuni repeatedly with Benjamin air rifle brand type 397 PA. Consequently the victim’s right and left thigh became injured by the shooting. Fresh bloods were immediately
pouring and the victim screamed hysterically. The victim was directly rushed to BRSUD Tabanan to remove a bullet lodged in her thigh. Parents of the victim whose homes were directly in front of chicken coop immediately reported the incident to Polsektif Kerambitan. Tabanan district police Pahumas Kompol Endung Hardanto accompanied by Kapolsektif Kerambitan PPA I Gede Wali on Sunday (2 / 5) said the officers immediately arrested the perpetrators and secured
the evidence in the form of air riffle used to shoot the victim. In the investigation, the perpetrator confessed to be upset because his employer’s chickens were often disturbed. So he shot the victim who was passing by. The suspect will be charged with article 354 of the Penal Code with the threat of prison for more than five years. Dozens of students of SDN 2 Sibetan elementary school, Bebandem, Karangasem, are in quite alarming situation, while on Tuesday (May 4), dozen of those students of grade VI should follow the final exam. Neglected condition of such local students was caused by the non-existence of teachers and facilities such as textbooks from Karangasem Regency. Such condition drew the attention of two Japanese tourists and last Saturday (May 1), they visited dozens of students of the schools while providing for some clothing, stationery and sports equipment. The two Japanese tourists were Mr. Tokoe Kutaro and Mr. Takashi from the Kamakura town, Japan knowing the condition of the local students after being told by one of the alumnus of SDN 2 Sibetan, Gusti Sujendra who is now working as a tour guide in Denpasar. As ever reported, SDN 2 Sibetan was dissolved by the Regent of Karangasem I Wayan Geredeg based on the Regent Regulation three years ago, arguing that schools would be transformed into an international kindergarten. Students of SDN 2 Sibetan was
merged into SDN 1 Sibetan whose distance is around one km from the houses of SDN 2 students scattered in the west of the hill ranges of Sibetan Village. Since local students still love their historic school and institution built in 1927 as well as feels closer to school, students and their parents do not want the school to be disbanded and the students are sent to school at SDN 1. Until now, 57 students remain at SDN 2 and each year it regularly receives the entrants of new students. Since dissolved by the Regent, the students are only taught by volunteer teacher because they were concerned with dozens of local students in the midst of government’s program touting the completion of nine-year compulsory education program. Deputy Head of Commission IV of Karangasem House, I Wayan Sudira, last Sunday, said the parents of students from two hamlets namely Sibetan Tengah and Mantri Hamlet, three years ago asked the Regent of Karangasem for many times in order the school would not be disbanded because local students did not want to move to another school. But up to now, the Regent Regulation was not withdrawn. Sudira who is also local
resident once asked local government to clarify the status of the school because their students were actually allocated with School Operational Assistance (BOS) from Bali Education Agency but local students did not get the same services as students in other schools. Sudira said based on the teachers/ volunteers during the raid of Commission of the Karangasem House to the school monitoring the readiness of local students to take the exams, the results of its try-out test were convincing. They got good grades and passed the standard of graduation scores, in contrast to the main elementary school students where some of them even did not graduate with a zero score of particular subjects. On the other hand, the official of Karangasem Education Agency denied if the students of SDN 2 were said to be abandoned. Given, local students were still recognized by the government with the status as students of SDN 1 Sibetan. Later on, the passing students would have certificate issued under SDN 1. Although they took exams at SDN 2 but the test materials were taken from SDN 1 as the core school. (013)

Two teenagers from Banjar Bokong, Sampalan Klod, Dawan, Klungkung, Agus Eka Putra and Ketut Gede Darma Susila had died after a traffic accident (lakalantas) on the Road of Banjar Lekok, Sampalan Klod, Dawan, on Saturday (1 / 5) evening. Both of the Klungkung residents died in hospital during the intensive treatment due to injuries suffered were quite badly. Klungkung Police are still investigating cause of the accident that left the two dead. Both of the victims were bouncing and suffered a severe wound and were unconscious. Both were rushed to Klungkung Hospital to receive intensive care. Unfortunately, neither life was able to be saved. It certainly makes a shock to family. When monitored in hospital Klungkung, they fell silent and not willing to comment anything related events experienced by both victims. ‘’We are still investigating the cause certainly the accident,’’ added Sutarjana. Users of ferry services in Bali Straits lately felt worried about the condition of ships operated in the Bali Strait. This situation was followed by frequent instances where the engine often did not work at sea and the ships ran aground because of the feasibility of ship engines and old age vessel. The aground of Prathita ship, Saturday (May 1) at dawn, made the ship and passengers hanging over for eight hours at sea. A number of passengers expected the ship worthiness should be properly examined because it involved the safety of passengers. “Outside the weather factor, we see a lot of old ships operated in the area of Bali Strait, and the ship’s engines are also inadequate. NYC mayor: We’ll find whoever is behind car bomb Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — The car bomb was a crude concoction of ordinary items — fireworks, fuel and fertilizer — that authorities suspect was meant to cause maximum mayhem in the heart of Times Square. In the end, the device fizzled and the city and its residents counted themselves lucky once again: lucky that a vendor saw smoke creeping out of the car parked in one of the busiest streets in America; lucky that authorities responded quickly; and lucky that the would-be terrorists were clumsy enough to assemble a bomb that wasn’t capable of exploding. But it was enough to fray nerves and set off a frenzied probe in what New York Police Department officials called the most serious car bomb plot in the city since the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, in which six people were killed and more than 1,000 injured. “Clearly it was the intent of whoever did this to cause mayhem, to create casualties,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. The hunt was on Monday for a middle-aged man who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the sport utility vehicle where the bomb was found. Authorities also wanted to talk to the owner of the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder. The gasoline-and-propane bomb could have cut the SUV in half, produced “a significant fireball” and sprayed shrapnel and metal parts with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows on one of America’s busiest streets, lined with Broadway theaters and restau-
rants and full of people out on a Saturday night, Kelly said. The Pakistani Taliban appeared to claim responsibility for the car bomb in three videos that surfaced after the weekend scare, monitoring groups said. Kelly said police have no evidence to support the claims and noted that the same group had falsely taken credit for previous attacks on U.S. soil. Despite the attempt to instill fear, Times Square sprung back to life. “This is America. This is what we do,” said Earl Morriss of Seattle, who was sightseeing. “Nobody is going to stop us from living our lives and doing what we want to do.” The New York surveillance video, made public late Sunday, shows an unidentified white man apparently in his 40s slipping down an alley and taking off his shirt, revealing another underneath. Police released a photograph of the SUV as it crossed an intersection at 6:28 p.m. Saturday. A vendor pointed out the SUV to an officer about two minutes later. The explosive device in the SUV had cheap-looking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks, which were apparently intended to detonate the gas cans and set the propane afire in a chain reaction, Kelly said.
Investigators had feared that a final component placed in the cargo area — a metal rifle cabinet packed a fertilizer-like substance and rigged with wires and more fireworks — could have made the device even more devastating. Test results late Sunday showed it was indeed fertilizer, but NYPD bomb experts believe it was not a type volatile enough to explode like the ammonium nitrate grade fertilizer used in previous terror attacks, said police spokesman Paul Browne. BANGKOK – Thailand’s prime minister said Monday he has formulated a roadmap to solve the country’s political crisis, while his deputy said the solution will “probably” call for dissolving Parliament if there is no longer a risk of violence. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, speaking at a special Senate session on the political crisis, did not say when the plan would be made public. Abhisit has been under intense pressure to end the stalemate with the anti-government protesters, who have showed no sign of wearing down after an eight-week siege that has paralyzed parts of the capital. His comments come just a day after he warned that security forces were preparing to clear out the socalled Red Shirt protesters — an action that would risk more bloodshed. Police with riot gear and armed soldiers remained deployed near the protest site Monday, but there was no immediate sign of increased security or preparations for

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a 2006 military coup and is now encouraging the protesters from abroad. Red Shirt leaders, who have vowed to remain camped in Bangkok streets until their demands are met, said Monday a successful solution to the crisis hinged on several factors. “The word ‘roadmap’ could mean anything,” said Weng Tojirakarn, one of the protest leaders. “Does it mean a constitutional amendment or just solutions to economic problems and political stalemate? The government has to (address) all of this when it launches a roadmap.” Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the government’s plan could offer a political compromise but only if authorities feel there is no more risk of violence. “The principle is that if the country is quiet, people stop taking sides and are ready to abide by the rules like in other democratic countries, the prime minister will probably decide to dissolve the Parliament,” Suthep told reporters at Parliament.

SYDNEY – An Australian teenager aiming to become the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world was days away from completing her goal on Monday, after battling the worst conditions of her trip. After completing more than 20,000 nautical miles, schoolgirl Jessica Watson had to fight harsh weather while sailing around Tasmania, with 12 metre-high (40-foot) swells and 55-knot winds buffeting her boat. “The last two weeks were the most difficult,” Watson’s manager Andrew Fraser told AFP. “That region of ocean is quite notorious for its treacherous conditions. We are just relieved that Jessica has managed to safely negotiate her way through.” The dangerous weather has taken its toll on the teenager, who on her blog reported sore muscles and bruises after her 33-foot bright pink yacht “Ella’s Pink Lady” fought through the huge waves. In her latest entry on Monday, the 16y e a r- o l d s a i d s h e h a d r o u n d e d Tasmania’s South-East Cape and was now sailing north towards Sydney.”I never expected rounding Tasmania to be much of a big deal, but all of last week’s struggles made finally getting around the (South East) Cape 10 times sweeter,” Watson wrote. Watson is less than 1,000 miles (1,600
kilometres) from the finish line of her 23,000 nautical mile (38,000 km) solo round- the-world trip, non-stop and unassisted. The teenager was criticised before setting off on October 18 last year, after doubts were raised by authorities over her ability to complete the arduous journey alone. She headed east over the Pacific and briefly crossed the equator before rounding South America’s Cape Horn, sailing across the Atlantic and below Africa’s Cape of Good Hope before crossing the Indian Ocean back to Australia. The difficult sailing conditions have forced Watson to delay her date of arrival in Sydney, initially thought to be May 8 or 9. “There are more gales forecast, so we will get a better idea later this week on when she will arrive. It should be the weekend of 15-16 May,” Fraser said. “She’s not under any pressure to arrive earlier. This will allow her to catch up with some much-needed sleep.” Watson now looks set to beat the record set by Australian Jesse Martin, who completed the journey aged 18 in 1999.
The siege deeply shook India, despite the country’s long history of terror attacks. The violence stretched over three days and left corpses scattered through some of the city’s best-known places. Millions of people stayed glued to their televisions to watch it unfold. The siege sparked calls for a wholesale restructuring in the country’s poorly trained and underfunded security forces, though few major changes ever took place. The attacks and the subsequent investigation also added enormous pressure to India and Pakistan’s already tense relations. The two countries’ formal peace process was suspended in the wake of the violence. India’s Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said Monday that “the judgment in itself is a message to Pakistan that they should not export terror to India. If they do and if the terrorists are apprehended, we will be able to bring them to justice and give them an exemplary punishment.” Judge M.L. Tahiliyani said the gunmen in three-day siege came ready for sustained urban combat, bringing with them everything from machine-guns to a GPS device. “These types of preparations are not normally made by ordinary criminals. These are made in an organized type of war,” he said. Tahiliyani acquitted Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, two Indians who had been accused of helping plot the attacks, saying that the evidence against them “doesn’t inspire confidence in my mind.” Fahim Ansari’s wife, Yasmin Ansari, told reporters that her husband had been falsely implicated.
“We had to undergo a lot of suffering. We feel relieved today.” India blames a Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, for masterminding the attack. In his verdict, the judge said Kasab was a member of the group and that Kasab’s handlers were in Pakistan. The evidence against Kasab included footage from closed circuit cameras in and around the train station and the testimony of more than 600 witnesses. The trial was conducted in four languages in a special court in Mumbai’s high security Arthur Road Jail, where Kasab has been held since his arrest. He was arrested on the first night of the siege. On Monday, security at the prison and the surrounding areas was exceptionally tight, with armed police and paramilitary troops on alert. During the siege the gunmen stormed two luxury hotels, a Jewish center run by the ultra-Orthodox Chabad-Lubavitch movement and the train station. Six people were killed at the Chabad House, including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka. Their 2-year-old son Moshe survived the attack, rescued by an Indian caretaker. “After such a thing, the pain comes back, even stronger. The conviction of the Pakistani doesn’t comfort us at all, of course, because Gabi and Rivki can’t come back to us until the dead are resurrected,” Rabbi Shimon Rosenberg, Rivka Holtzberg’s father, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. Despite its complexity, the trial lasted only about a year — unusual speed for India’s notoriously slow judicial system.

Pyongyang says it will not go back to the nuclear dialogue until UN sanctions are lifted, and until the United States makes a commitment to hold talks on a formal peace treaty. But US and South Korean officials have indicated the talks cannot restart until suspicion is resolved about any North Korean involvement in the March 26 sinking of the Cheonan corvette, which claimed the lives of 46 sailors. House plenary session marked by walkouts Antara
JAKARTA - A House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session that had been expected to approve the revised 2010 state budget on Monday was adjourned after the members of two party factions staged a walkout. Because of differences in political views, members of the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) and People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) factions left the meeting while it was still underway. When House Deputy Speaker Anis Matta was making the meeting’s opening remarks, a number of House members interrupted him and questioned the presence of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. The House plenary session was interrupted by among others Erick Satria Wardana, Akbar Faisal, and Faisal Ahmad of the Hanura faction,
Ruhut Sitompul of the Democrat Party faction, and Bambang Wuryanto of the PDIP faction. Before the walkout, a number of House members had actually proposed a pause in the meeting to discuss matters related to Sri Mulyani’s presence. But the House deputy speaker said the finance minister was attending the meeting at the invitation of the DPR and based on decision of the House Consultative Body (Bamus). “The House invited Sri Mulyani on the basis of a Bamus decision,” Anis Matta said.
House member from the PDIP faction, Bambang Wuryanto, said the House’s Budgetary Body had decided that the end result of the House’s discussions on the revised 2010 state budget with the government was to be co-signed by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa (istead of by the finance minister-ed). “This means there is a difference of views, and therefore it is better for the PDIP faction to leave this plenary session,” Bambang said before leaving the meeting. After that, the other members of the PDIP faction also left the meeting room, followed by members of the Hanura faction. In response to the walkout, the session’s chair decided to adjourn the meeting to give House members an opportunity to hold inter-faction consultations or lobbying.
Tax holiday projected to finish before end of 2010 Antara
JAKARTA - Head of the Investment Coordinating Agency (BKPM) Gita Wirjawan said the tax holiday given by the government to investors is expected to be finished before the end of this year. “It is enough to give the tax holiday in one or two quarters to enable
the investors to boost their investment to reach the Rp 10,000 trillion target, which would be quite an achievement,” he said in Jakarta Sunday. He said discussion had been held with the other economic ministers including the finance minister with regard to tax holidays for foreign investors. Gita also said that in a not too dis-
tant future the economic ministers will again discuss follow up to the agreed tax holiday concept for realization in the form of a policy. Gita wished that the tax facility be applied only to investors who need to come to Indonesias for government-prioritized sectors and for the eastern regions for promotion purposes.

JAKARTA - Chief of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Gita Wirjawan said investment in the first quarter of 2010 was showing a positive trend which was expected to continue until the end of the year. “We have set a target of a 15 percent increase as compared to that last year, but the upward trend in the first quarter which almost reached 25 percent indicates a good momentum for Indonesia to make bigger investment,” the BKPM chief said. He said that considering the licenses that had been issued, the investment trend would continue to increase. “I am optimistic with the figures in the first quarter. Usually investment in the first quarter is slow but this time it is an exception,” he said. Wirjawan said that in the recent “Infrastructure Summit 2010” held on April 14-17, a number of foreign companies had registered and waited for a number of projects offered by the government.
“There are nine bidder firms, among others from Japan, South Korea and China, for a 379 km railway project,” he said. Many investors from the three countries have also expressed interest in projects like toll roads, geothermal power plants, and gas processing and storage infrastructure. “There is a chance to increase investment and to export homemade products in line with the FTA with China,” he said. Based on BKPM data, investment in the first quarter of this year reached Rp42.1 trillion. Foreign investment was recorded at Rp35.4 trillion or US$3.8 billion in 424 projects while domestic investment accounted for Rp6.7 trillion in 150 projects. The biggest foreign investment was made in the transportation sector, warehouses and communications amounting to US$941.5 million in 23 projects. It was followed by the mining sector with an investment of US$711.2 million in 39 projects,
electricity, gas and clean water with nine projects amounting to US$681.6 million. Foreign investment was also made in 20 projects of housing, industrial zones and office building accounting for US406.1 million. The other foreign investment was made in the motor vehicle and transportation sectors with 10 projects worth US$244.6 million. In the meantime, the biggest domestic investment of Rp1.9 trillion was made in seven projects in the transportation sector, warehousing and communications. The trade sector and repair projects were the second biggest to receive domestic investment with eight projects worth Rp1.3 trillion in the first quarter of 2010. The other sectors included gas and clean water sectors with 12 projects worth Rp1.2 trillion. About Rp800 billion had been invested in two service projects while Rp400 billion in the machine, metal and electronic industries with 94 projects valued at Rp400 billion.

I Putu Suardhika, the spokesman of Bali’s Government, said “there is great hope that Bali in the next three or four years will become a secure, clean, comfortable, and green tourist destination.” He also said that Bali’s Governor, Made Mangku Pastika planed Bali as a green province. The government urged the people in Bali to take part in achieving the goal of the plan. Increasing the awareness on the environment is one of the steps done by the government. Suardhika explained that garbage is one of the serious problem faces by the government. The governor has coordinated with the head of regency to find the best solution for
the problem. The governor ordered regency must have their own rule about garbage handling. “The garbage handling must have the proper rules including the punishment for the violators,” Suardhika added. In addition to the rules, the government is also creating a system to convert the garbage into organic fertilizer. The system could give extra values and increase the cleanliness in Bali. In the budget plan in 2010, there will a special budget to build three garbage handling factory in three different areas, Besakih temple in Karangasem, Goa Lawah in Klungkung and Kintamanni in Bangli. The areas produce much garbage because there are many big temples there and the local government can not handle it. Suardhika said “we wanted to give economics value on the garbage.”

Bali last year received 2.26 million foreign tourists, and only 1.99 million in 2008. Some 65.58 percent of Bali’s economic structure was still dominated by the tertiary sector, 18.86 percent by the primary sector, and 15.56 percent by the secondary sector. The farming sector contributed only 18.21 percent, mining and quarrying 0.65 percent, processing industry 9.16 percent, electricity, gas and clean water two percent. In addition, the building sector contributed 4.4 pct, rade, hotels and restaurants 30 pct, transportation and communications 13.76 percent, finance, leasing and corporate services 7.11 percent, and other services 14.72 percent, Ketut Teneng said.
MANGUPURA - Implementation of Boarder Control System Management (BCSM) by the Immigration Office at Arrival Terminal of Ngurah Rai Airport kindled the complaint of tourists. Because, the system is too complicated and time consuming. The queues of tourists can even reach two hours. Thus, I Wayan Puspanegara, a legislator at the Badung House expressed, last Sunday (May 2). According to Puspa, many immigration procedures had to be passed through by tourists when entering the arrival terminal. Among the procedures were visa on arrival (VOA) and BCSM. BCSM procedures required every international passenger to be photographed and fingerprinted. Procedures that were adopted about two weeks ago, according to Puspa, had positive aims. But in practice, it required a long time. The line could reach for two hours, said Puspa. Puspa Negara said it was that inconvenience complained by foreign tourists. It went inversely with the concept of tourism being safe and comfortable. For that purpose, Puspa requested the BCSM system could be evaluated further by professional and minimized the standard of deviation. ”Tourists required high quality service and must be served effectively and efficiently. Complaints of tourists were not considered trivial and therefore I will ask the leader of Badung House through the Head of Commission B in charged of tourism and transportation to convene the working meet-

He said that this new system have to be implemented by Indonesia to avoid fugitive and wanted foreign citizen visit Indonesia. Bali still has 134,000 poor families, of which not more than 10,000 families could be handled each year. It would take 14 years to handle the rest. Governor Pastika said he wish to shorten the period to only four or five years.

If they come at the same time then there will be heavy traffic jam and long queue on the harbor. The harbor management is prioritizing on the regular buses and only two tourist buses allowed in every ship. The heavy traffic will continue especially during the school holiday which falls on July.

BEIJING - China on Sunday told banks to increase the amount of money they must keep in reserve as it tries to rein in new lending amid fears of a property bubble and economic overheating. The People’s Bank of China said in a notice on its website that the reserve requirement ratio would be hiked by 50 basis points from May 10 — the third reported increase since the beginning of the year. The ratio is the minimum amount of money that banks must keep in reserve and not use for lending or other purposes. The central bank said rural credit cooperatives and banks would not be required to make the increase for the time being. The hike comes amid government efforts to control an explosion in new lending that began last year and has raised fears of inflation and a possible rash of bad loans that could trip up the rapid growth of the economy. The government has set a loan target of 7.5 trillion yuan (1.1 trillion dollars) this year, fearing a property bubble and economic overheating. Aside from raising bank reserve ratios, it has also increased interest rates on benchmark three-month and one-year Treasury bills.

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia said Monday it would move to a new low-cost terminal at Kuala Lumpur’s international airport by March 2012, a year later than planned. But AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said he was “thrilled” with an agreement struck with Malaysia’s airport authorities after a long-running battle over the design and facilities. “We are very happy with the design, it has taken in a lot of our input,” Fernandes told reporters. “We think that with this, a large part of our battle to make Malaysia the biggest hub of Asia is over.” AirAsia, which was launched
in 2001 with just two planes, is now the region’s fourth-biggest carrier with 25 million passengers a year. Fernandes said the current low-cost carrier terminal, which opened in 2006, had a capacity to handle 15 million passengers annually while the new terminal would have a capacity of 30 million. “This can enable us to plan for the next 10 years,” he said, adding that the bigger capacity meant the airline could revive some routes that had been terminated due to a lack of space at the current overcrowded terminal. As part of the agreement with operators Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad there will be parking bays for 76 aircraft and AirAsia’s headquarters will be located next to the terminal building.
“We haven’t met the deadline we wanted but with the extra parking bays that we have been given, we’re comfortable,” Fernandes said. “It’s okay, we’re excited. We will have a proper headquarters. It’s a big step forward for AirAsia.” Like the current low-cost terminal, the new facility is not for AirAsia’s exclusive use, and is open to other budget airlines. Fernandes said that the routes likely to be revived were flights to Hat Yai in southern Thailand, and Palembang and Balikpapan in Indonesia. He said the carrier also planned to introduce flights this year to the Maldives, where his Tune Hotel business has been invited to build six budget hotels.
ECB gives way on Greek debt criteria, in ‘U’ turn Agence France-Presse
FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank suspended benchmark criteria for lending to Greek banks on Monday in an abrupt about-face which offers relief to the Greek government but might undermine the euro. The eurozone central bank decided to enable the Greek commercial banking system to access precious central bank funds without having to meet tough collateral criteria which until now have formed part of the basis of the ECB’s credibility. The ECB governing council “decided to suspend the application of the minimum credit rating threshold in the collateral eligibility requirements for the purposes of the Eurosystem’s credit operations in the case of marketable debt instruments issued or guaranteed by the Greek government,” a statement said. The unprecedented move will remain in effect “until further notice” and allows banks in Greece and elsewhere to keep borrowing ECB cash using Greek government bonds and other instruments as collateral despite their degraded credit ratings to “junk” bond status. Last week, Standard & Poor’s slashed Greece’s sovereign credit status to junk levels, threatening to cripple the country’s chance of avoiding default. The ECB’s move came less than four months after ECB president JeanClaude Trichet insisted the bank would not amend collateral policy just for Greece. “We will not change our collateral framework for the sake of any particular country,” Trichet said on January 14 in response to a question about the debt-ridden country. “That is crystal clear,” he had stressed. Central bank credibility is a crucial asset, and the ECB has now been forced to change course by the threat of the Greek crisis spreading to other parts of the 16-nation eurozone. UniCredit chief economist Marco Annunziata said last week that the ECB
had been “openly accused of caving in to political pressure and betraying the Bundesbank’s heritage,” a reference to Germany’s central bank, on which the ECB was modeled. With Europe’s economy lagging behind in the global economic recovery, the Greek crisis and its handling by European leaders has done severe damage to the continent’s image. Greece is being crushed by some 300 billion euros (400 billion dollars) in debt, and has run up a public deficit that might have reached 14 percent of the country’s output. On Sunday, European governments finally endorsed a historic 110-billioneuro bailout with the International Monetary Fund, the biggest ever financing for a single country, to save Athens from bankruptcy and shore up the European single currency. “European Monetary Union was a political initiative to begin with, and politics has come to the rescue in order to prevent an unravelling of the project,” ING rates strategist Padhraic Garvey noted. But Commerzbank chief economist Joerg Kraemer warned that “Europe made a further step towards a (monetary) transfer union which in the long-run may undermine the political support for the currency union.” On Sunday, the ECB council approved a Greek plan to cut its swollen deficit and debt, and said on Monday that the strong commitment by Athens “to fully implement the programme” was the basis for suspending criteria on Greek debt. The first instalment of a joint eurozone-IMF rescue package will be paid in the coming weeks, with the rest spread over three years and conditional on a swathe of painful cuts and tax rises in Greece, finance ministers said. The ECB’s move on Monday was also designed to prevent fear on financial markets from spreading to eurozone members like Ireland, Portugal and Spain. The latter two also saw their sovereign debt credit ratings cut last week.

ZURICH – Film director Roman Polanski has spoken out for the first time against the U.S. case to extradite him, saying the case was based on a lie. Polanski, 76, is under house arrest in Switzerland awaiting extradition to face sentencing in Los Angeles for a more than 30-year-old sex crime. A California judge last month denied a request by his attorneys to sentence him in his absence. That decision was seen as clearing the way for the director of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Pianist” to be returned to the United States. Swiss officials have been waiting for the end of proceedings in California before moving forward themselves. Last week, the film director’s lawyers asked a judge to release records they claimed will help Swiss officials decide the Oscar winner’s fate, but the Swiss Federal Department of Justice has said

NEW YORK – Actress Helen Wagner, who played mild-mannered Nancy Hughes on the CBS soap opera “As the World Turns” for more than a half-century and spoke its first words, has died at age 91. She died Saturday, said the show’s New York-based production company, TeleNext Media Inc., which didn’t say where she died or what was the cause of her death. Wagner opened “As the World Turns” when it premiered on April 2, 1956, with the words: “Good morning, dear.” She held the Guinness World Record for playing the same role on television for the longest amount of time, 54 years, TeleNext Media said. “All of us at ‘As the World Turns’ are deeply saddened by Helen’s passing,” executive producer Christopher Goutman said in a statement. “She is loved by generations of fans, and while we will miss her greatly Helen will always remain the heart and soul of ‘As the World Turns.’” While Wagner, who was born in Lubbock, Texas, was seen less often in later decades, no other network television performer came close to her run playing a single character. She was still part of the cast, though with a small presence, in December 2009, when CBS announced that “As the World Turns” was being canceled and its last episode would air in September 2010. The episode was taped in March. “As the World Turns” was the first daytime TV drama to run a full halfhour rather than 15 minutes. It rose to No. 1 in the daytime ratings and, in the 1970s, was expanded to an hour. In a 1968 New York Times interview, Wagner called Nancy “a tentpole character.” “Nothing ever happens to Nancy,” Wagner said. “She’s the one the others come and talk to.” The many fans who liked Nancy/ Wagner came and talked to her, too. She told the Times in 1977 that a woman once ran up and kissed her as she shopped at a supermarket. “She said, ‘Oh, Nancy, I’ve loved you so long I really must kiss you again,’ but at that point I managed to escape,” Wagner recalled. In a 1998 Associated Press interview, Wagner said she wished her character hadn’t receded into the background in later years while most of the plot developments happened to the younger characters. “I don’t like the making of Nancy into only an extra figure at parties,” she said. “She is too dynamic a person to be made into a ghost.” Still, she loved the storytelling of daytime television and remembered the maze of complex plots from decades earlier, including her own. Don MacLaughlin, who played Nancy’s first husband, Chris Hughes, died in 1986 at age 79, not long after the show celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special program devoted to Chris and Nancy Hughes’ 50th wedding anniversary. Chris’ death was then written into the plotline, and Nancy later married a detective named Dan McClosky, played by Dan Frazer. McClosky’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease gave Wagner/Hughes a meaty problem on-screen for a few years, but the producers eventually killed him off, too.

Doctors use gene sequence to predict health risks Associated Press Writer
LONDON – The next time Stephen Quake is prescribed a drug, he says he won’t worry about having a bad reaction. The Stanford University professor will simply consult his genome to see if there are any warning signs in his DNA.

More than two dozen of Quake’s scientist colleagues combed through his genetic code to assess his chances of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and how he might react to common medicines. The results were published Friday in the medical journal, Lancet. It is an example of the kind of personalized medicine that might one day be possible if doctors have a map of their patients’ DNA. Seven other people have had their genomes sequenced. Last year, Quake’s genome was published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, before it was analyzed for health risks. But as the gene scan becomes more widely available, experts warn interpreting the data may be trickier than obtaining it. “We need to get better at explaining what this information means for patients,” said Euan Ashley, an assistant professor of medicine at Stanford and the Lancet paper’s lead author. For months, 30 scientists studied
more than 2 million gene variants in Quake’s DNA. They found genes linked with sudden cardiac death and others suggesting he might be resistant to the anti-clotting drug clopidogrel. Based on their findings, Ashley recommended Quake start taking cholesterol-lowering statins. Quake declined. The research was paid for by the U.S. National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and others. When the first human genome was sequenced, it cost about $3 billion. Decoding Quake’s genome cost around $50,000. Experts said the price of getting a complete genome sequence may drop to less than $1,000 in the next few years, tempting more people to get their DNA mapped. Some experts said legislation might be needed to protect such sensitive information. “The genie is now out of the bottle,” said Nilesh Samani,
of the department of cardiovascular sciences at the University of Leicester. He was not connected to the genome research. “We need to think carefully about whether we need laws to prevent genetic information from getting into the wrong hands.” Muin Khoury, director of the National Office of Public Health Genomics at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said it wasn’t clear how genome sequences might help. “We simply cannot interpret ... the vast amount of emerging data,” he said. “The current information is incomplete, uncertain, potentially misleading and could lead to unnecessary procedures,” he said. Khoury said that without a medical reason for getting a genome sequence, obtaining one was premature. “The relationships between our genome and most health and disease indicators are so far unknown or unvalidated,” he said. Quake also cautioned that getting a genome sequence isn’t for everyone. “All you hear about when they talk about your genome is ways you’re going to die and get sick. It doesn’t tell you you’re going to be happy or a great athlete,” he said. “If you’re a worrier, this is not for you.”

NEW ORLEANS – As a giant oil slick lapped at southeastern Louisiana’s ecologically sensitive coast, chefs, restaurant owners and seafood dealers were certain it would squeeze the state’s $2.4 billion seafood industry. They just weren’t sure how badly or for how long. Federal officials shut down fishing for at least 10 days from the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle on Sunday because of the uncontrolled gusher spewing massive amounts of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. “It’s called fear of the unknown,” said Ricky Power, a suburban New Orleans seafood distributor. Power was certain, however, that prices will rise and availability will fall. Among the unknowns: how much longer it would take oil giant BP to stop the flow of oil from the site of last week’s offshore rig explosion; how successful would be the attempts to keep the oily water out of seafood habitat; and how the oil would affect reproduction of oysters, shrimp, crabs and finfish. “This isn’t just going to be a shortterm thing,” said Ben Wicks, owner and chef at Mahony’s PO-Boy Shop, a neighborhood eatery in a converted shotgun house in uptown New Orleans. Harlon Pearce, chairman of the
Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, said he applauded the federal government’s decision to shut down fishing for at least 10 days to “ensure everyone that all seafood in the Gulf is of the highest quality and is safe to eat.” Award winning chef Donald Link, whose Herbsaint and Cochon restaurants in New Orleans are popular with tourists and locals alike, said another problem is the publicity surrounding the slick. He didn’t want anyone to think that Louisiana seafood had disappeared or was unsafe, or that New Orleans restaurants were closed. “I’m probably more concerned at this point with Louisiana getting a bad rap in the media and tourism dropping off than I am lack of seafood,” said Link. Clam growers in Cedar Key, a small island community that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico from Florida, echoed Link’s concern, even though the oil remained far from their muddy waters. Fishing and boat tours proceeded as usual Sunday, and local oysters and clams were on restaurant menus, though owners warily eyed news from the spill to the west. Hype over oil damage would be as economically destructive as the oil itself, said Brian Mattice, a clam grower and owner of Island Hoppers charter boat company. Clams are crucial to Cedar Key, yielding $45 million in dockside and
wholesale sales in 2007, the most recent numbers available. A drop in sales, potentially followed by contaminated water, would be catastrophic, Mattice said. “Even if we get a little bit of oil and a little bit of media coverage, we’re done,” Mattice said. That’s not to say he’s not worried about his supply — or his suppliers. His restaurants could survive a few weeks or even a few months without Louisiana seafood, he said, but many of the oyster growers and independent commercial fishermen who supply him were within the trajectory of the oil slick. They might not survive a prolonged closure. The slick was threatening marshes and bayous east of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes — one of the state’s most abundant oyster producing areas, as well as a source of shrimp, crabs and finfish. “It’s going to be a huge disaster for St. Bernard,” said Kevin Vizard, owner and chef at Vizard’s restaurant on Magazine Street in New Orleans. He ticked off a list of towns and communities — Hopedale, Shell Beach, Delacroix — that are havens for commercial and recreational fishing. Rocky Dictharo, a seafood dealer in the Plaquemines Parish town of Buras, agreed. His family, he said, has fished the area for four generations. His brother still fishes. He said fish-
ermen aren’t just worried about the shrimp and oysters, but about the microscopic life they feed on. If much oil infiltrates the area, it could devastate seafood in that area for years. “When you kill that food chain, nothing’s going to come back to this area,” he said. The broader picture wasn’t as bleak. Plenty of areas west of the Mississippi were unaffected and were not forecast to suffer from the spill, noted Ewell Smith of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion Board. Smith, who also
applauded the decision to halt fishing, said the board was working to assure the public thst Louisiana seafood was available and safe. He noted that the closure did not affect the entire Gulf. The waters west of the Mississippi River are still open and represent more than three-quarters of Louisiana seafood production, he said. “We have over 300 miles of coast,” Smith said Friday. “We should be fine unless this thing gets totally out of control.”

Nadal matches Agassi record with Rome tennis win Agence France Presse
ROME – Rafael Nadal, the world number three, won a record equalling 17th Masters title with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of 13th-seeded Spanish compatriot David Ferrer at the Rome Masters 1000 at the Foro Italico on Sunday. In a match that finished four and a half hours after it started due to two rain delays, clay court king Nadal was never troubled. His victory matched the mark of 17 Masters wins set by Andre Agassi, although the American was 34 when he won the last of his while the Spaniard is still just 23. “I hope to improve this record but you never know when you will stop, that’s the good thing about sport,” said Nadal. “I’m 23 and I’m very happy about how I’ve done these years. For me 17 is a very important number but in one week we have the Madrid Masters which is another one and I’ll try to keep winning. “But these tournaments are very difficult because they have all the best players in the world.” Ferrer, who was aiming for a first Masters, refused to blame the rain delay for his defeat. “Maybe the court was slower (after the break) and I had a problem winning points but Rafa had some good chances in important moments and it’s difficult to beat
him but I’m happy with my game,” he said. “It’s my first final in Masters Series and I’m happy with my season. This year has been important for me for my confidence.” Ferrer won only three more games after the heavens opened and Nadal, who has dropped only one set on clay this year, proved that he is in great shape ahead of the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, which starts on May 23. Two weeks ago he stormed to victory at the Monte Carlo Masters and here he was only troubled in his three-set epic against Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in the semi-finals. It was his fifth win in Rome in the last six years. Over the last six years he has won Monte Carlo six times, here and Barcelona five times and at Roland Garros will also be aiming for a fifth title. The players were forced off by rain at 4-4 in the first set and when they came back out, Ferrer seemed to have lost focus. He had already been under pressure on his serve before the break but at 5-5 he finally gave up a break af-
ter netting a forehand when facing his sixth break point of the set. However, he almost broke straight back as he earned his first and only break point of the first set but he went long on a backhand return. Nadal’s deep hitting in the next point allowed him to come forward and bury a volley before another backhand error on the return from Ferrer allowed the world number three to seal the set. Things looked ominous for Ferrer at the beginning of the second as he dropped to 15-40 on his serve but he dug deep to hold. However on his very next game he dropped to 0-40 only to save all three before a forehand wide and a backhand long gave up the break. Play was then immediately suspended for the second time and the players were off court for an hour and a half but when they came back Ferrer put up little resistance. He held his first service game but then at 2-4 he gave up a break point with a double fault and then hit a wild forehand long to allow Nadal to serve for the title.

James’ comments seemed slightly ominous for a player on the eve of a big decision. He has given few clues about his intentions for when free agency opens on July 1, but James almost sounded as if he was preparing to say goodbye. “Akron, Ohio is my home,” he said. “Akron, Ohio will always be remembered. Akron, Ohio is my life and I love this city.” Later, he was asked how he could leave “all this.” “This is home for me,” he said. “I love this place to death. Every day I wake up I understand that I’m not just carrying myself but I’m also carrying this city to bigger and better heights. No matter where life may head me, I’m never gone from here.” James received 116 of a possible 123 first-place votes to win in a landslide over Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant, who was picked first on four ballots. LIVERPOOL, England – Carlo Ancelotti kept his feet firmly on the ground after Chelsea moved to the brink of claiming the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Liverpool. Manchester United’s 1-0 victory at Sunderland just hours after Chelsea’s success at Anfield on Sunday ensured the title race will go down to the wire. But Ancelotti’s team will secure their first title for four years if they defeat Wigan in next Sunday’s final round of fixtures after goals by Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard swept aside weary Liverpool. “I am happy because it was a difficult game. It was the key game I think for the fight for the title and we played very well,” said Ancelotti, who has now masterminded home and away league wins over Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge. “We deserved to win. We did a fantastic job because there was a lot of pressure on us in this game. But we controlled our emotions,” Ancelotti added.
“It was a little bit difficult in the first half but in the second half we did better. “Now the team is fit and in good physical condition, good mentality ahead of next week’s game. “I always said the title would be decided at the end of the season.” Ancelotti admitted that Steven Gerrard’s uncharacteristic error that allowed Drogba to score helped Chelsea take a massive step towards the title. “The goal changed the game because we had more confidence after that,” added the Italian. “As for Lampard, he has fantastic skills to move into the box at the right time.” Lampard made sure of the points and the visitors could, and should, have won by a more handsome margin as they coped comfortably with the pressure of such a crucial clash. his commitment to the club after failing to assure supporters he will still be the Liverpool manager next season. MADRID – Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals, including a late headed winner, as Real Madrid twice came from behind to beat Osasuna 3-2 on Sunday and cut the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona to just one point. Real got off to the worst possible start as a poor back pass by Raul Albiol allowed in Carlos Aranda to give Osasuna the lead. In a breathless conclusion to the first half, Marcelo scored a rare header to equalise to Real again. Substitute Masoud Soleimani missed an open goal for Osasuna as the visitors missed several excellent chances and the game appeared to be heading for a draw until Ronaldo headed home a Gonzalo Higuain cross from close range. Real are now once again on the shoulders of Barcelona who responded in style to their heartbreaking Champions League exit at the hands of Inter Milan with a 4-1 win at Villarreal on Saturday. A brace from Lionel Messi along with goals from Xavi Hernandez and Bojan Krikic led the Catalans to victory with a single strike from Joseba Llorente the only reply. “Osasuna made us suffer a lot. It was the worst performance defensively this year although we did deserve to score three goals,” said Real coach Manuel Pellegrini. “The calendar is equally bad for both teams now (Real and Barcelona) and I think everything will be decided in the final week. My players are in good spirits, that is important for our last three games and so all we can do is push

Sauber: No need to write off 2010 SAUBER’S new technical director James Key reckons it is still possible to turn the team’s poor season around, and has begun an ‘ambitious’ programme to get his squad back on the pace. After impressing in pre-season testing, Sauber has had an abject start to 2010 - its cars stuck in the midfield and struggling for reliability. Key has joined the team to replace the retiring Willy Rampf, having previously overseen Force India’s transformation from backmarker to top ten contender. After a month in his new post, Key is optimistic that it is not too late to rescue Sauber’s 2010 campaign. When asked if he felt major improvement this year was possible, Key replied: “I believe it is, because we now know what we need to do with the current car. However, for some issues there are no quick fixes. Some current characteristics of the car need to be developed to produce new characteristics, which takes time. “So we will work as quickly as possible to turn that around. Targets have been set and they are very ambitious. It’s certainly possible to move up the grid, but the competition is fierce so we have to do everything we can to develop quicker than they do.” He said there is no mystery about Sauber’s current shortcomings, and that efforts to address them were already underway before he joined. “The race weekend in China really helped, because I was able to see the car running and talk to the drivers and people at the track in more de-
tail,” said Key. “From all of that I am forming a plan of the way we go forward, which fundamentally is attacking our known weaknesses and investigating areas we don’t understand so well yet. “The good news is the team is well aware already of some of the deficits that the car has compared to where it should be. I’ve been able to reinforce that and introduce a few other directions and ideas as well.” Key reckons the root of Sauber’s difficulties is the uncertainty that followed BMW’s pull-out and the abortive Qadbak buy-out last winter, before founder Peter Sauber stepped in to guarantee its future. He believes its subsequent down-sizing from a well-
funded works outfit to a lower-budget independent team also meant a period of adjustment. “The team is still recovering from its uncertain situation in the second half of 2009,” said Key. “It requires a slightly new approach to the way certain areas work to make better use of the size the team is now.” He hopes to avoid a repeat of Sauber’s current situation by making early headway on 2011, without compromising this year’s recovery push. “Work on the 2011 car has started already,” said Key. “I have a schedule in mind of how we need to split the balance between the development of this year’s and next year’s car, which fits the structure of the team.”

Last year Rossi hinted that he would only be willing to agree a new deal with Yamaha if Lorenzo went elsewhere as he did not feel their joint number one status was sustainable. But Lorenzo sees no reason why their partnership cannot continue into a third year. “I think we can still be together,” Lorenzo told the BBC. “Why not? For sure I have a lot of things to learn from Valentino, and if you are in the same team, it’s better for you. On one side it might be worse because there is one rider who is faster on the same bike.” Lorenzo’s future had been at the centre of last summer’s ‘silly season’, with a move to either Ducati or Honda mooted. But he said he had preferred to remain at Yamaha then, and still felt the same. When asked how close he had come to leaving Yamaha in 2009, Lorenzo replied: “To be honest, very close, I don’t want to lie. The Ducati
offer was very attractive - a lot of money, a bike which is very fast. “The biggest thing that makes me stay at Yamaha is the confidence Yamaha had in me when I was only a 250cc champion. I feel that I have to stay in Yamaha.” The Spaniard, who took the championship lead by winning at Jerez yesterday, also reitereated his belief that he is under less pressure to win the title than established champions like Rossi and Ducati’s Casey Stoner. “If it’s my time to fight for the championship, for Valentino, what is it? Or for Casey, who has won a world title?” said Lorenzo. “I still don’t have any world titles, so I don’t have this pressure. “I do my best. If my best is to finish second, and I could have won, I have to admit it and I have to work to be better next year. We are fighting at the front, and if it’s possible to win, I will try for sure.”
