Affleck’s ‘Argo’ tops North American box office “Argo,” based on a true story about six Americans spirited out of Iran during the 1979-80 hostage crisis, was the top movie in North America this weekend with $12.3 million in tickets sold, industry estimates showed Sunday.

Bali Starling at Karangsewu disappears Bali Post

JEMBRANA - A number of Bali Starlings which are observed at Karangsewu, Gilimanuk, have disappeared again lately. Allegedly, those protected birds in the West Bali National Park (TNBB) fear to nest at Karangsewu because of bustling human activities.

Previously, the distribution of Bali Starling after being reintroduced from their breeding has reached the Gulf of Gilimanuk. The residents precisely found the birds in mangrove forest at Karangsewu and since then they were monitored by the officers of TNBB. Lately, the birds vanished again and were alleged to go back into the forest on the peninsula of Prapat Agung.

“About two months ago, the Bali Starlings were indeed seen, but later on they were no longer here (Karangsewu—Ed). Probably, they were afraid of seeing many people,” explained Sukaji, 50, a resident of Karangsewu, Gilimanuk.

Though the Karangsewu remains to belong to the TNBB area, it is also often used for recreation site by local people. Allegedly, the

motorcycles and cars coming into location near the nest of Bali Starling have caused them to be unwilling to go back to Karangsewu.

Since the bird bearing the Latin name Leucopsar rothschildi is protected, it is almost never seen again at Gilimanuk. Therefore, the discovery of Bali Starling at Karangsewu is an encouraging progress over the past 10 years.

Local residents with the TNBB officers keep watch and maintain the breeding of the birds. Unfortunately, their existence cannot last longer and disappears again from the monitoring.

When being discovered some time ago, those birds did not wear bracelet. In other words, they were not the birds originating from the reintroduction, but the result of wild breeding in the TNBB. The Section Head of Region III TNBB, Seno Pramudita, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Oct 28) justified if the Bali Starling was no longer seen at

Karangsewu. The birds could only survive there for about 1-2 months because the area had been already touched by human. “Well, they may now have come into the area around the Prapat Agung Peninsula,” he explained. Karangsewu which belongs to the territory of TNBB is also used as a utilization area.

According to Seno, at the moment hundreds of Bali Starlings lived in West Bali. Among them, 129 birds lived in the breeding of the TNBB, 33 birds in the breeding of the adjacent community and 12 others had been reintroduced. (kmb26)

BANGLI - The Nangluk Merana ritual aiming to preserve the balance of nature as well as to ask for the welfare of all the people in the world was organized in the Ulun Danu Batur Temple, Batur customary village, Kintamani, on Sunday (Oct 28). Although this activity was an annual ritual, its implementation was quite special because it coincided with the great full moon in the fifth month of Balinese calendar so that it applied the ritual paraphernalia in the form of buffalo.

When met amidst officiating over the entire ritual procession, Jero Gede Batur Alitan suggested that other than aiming to plead for safety of all the people, the ritual was also intended to plead the Ulun Danu Batur deity in order all the people in the world were freed from any disaster, whether caused by nature or human acts. “We’re not just asking so that farmers could be bestowed with abundant water supply and maximum crops and kept away from pests and diseases, but also invoking so that mankind is freed from any conflicts,” he hoped.

Considering the importance of nangluk merana ritual, his party expected that all subak organizations in Bali could say prayers as long as the deities were abiding until next Wednesday (Oct 31).

Procession of the nangluk merana ritual in the Ulun Danu Batur was commenced on Monday (Oct 22) comprising the activities like neteg, nyuci, nanceb sunari and makarya sanganan. Meanwhile, on Sunday (Oct 28), the ritual procession was filled with neteg bagia pulakerti, melaspas bagia pulakerti, pepada wewalungan and resumed with the temple anniversary.

SINGARAJA - Aside from being accidentally cleared, the disturbing growth of mangrove forest at Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdistrict, is in fact caused by local residents. To prevent the more serious condition, the government is asked to assist local farmers to produce artificial fodder.

Sustainability condition at risk makes the tourism of Pejarakan village apprehensive. Some businessmen claim to frequently see the behavioral acts of people where they are coming into the mangrove forest freely.

No officials ever prohibit the people from going into the forest whereas they often clear the twigs of mangrove to be made into fodder for their cows and goats. As the mangrove plants are often disturbed, their growth is disrupted. Even, many mangrove plants die because their leaves and twigs have been cleared for fodder.

“The growth of mangrove in this forest is slow. Many plants die as their leaves or twigs are cleared for fodder,” said a foreigner who opened

a tourism business at Darma Garuda hamlet, Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdistrict.

According to him, the damage due to being cleared by residents for fodder could be overcome if the government was serious about protecting the mangrove forests. The government could provide assistance to produce artificial fodder, so that people would not have to clear the leaves or twigs of mangrove forest. “If possible, the government can provide local people with the assistance to produce artificial fodder, so that they will no longer clear the mangrove,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission B of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, asserted that his

party positively appreciated the entrepreneur who paid attention to the preservation of mangrove forest. However, the suggestion for the government to help residents make artificial fodder could not be realized individually. If the community established a group, the government could help them through technical institution. Even, other than helping produce artificial fodder, the government could also provide other helps such as in the form of calf and goatling. “Please establish a group of local residents and then submit a proposal of assistance.

We in the House will encourage the needs of the group as long as it is intended for the common interest,” he affirmed. (kmb)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS - History is coming full circle: borrowed from the Aztecs four centuries ago, perfected for the palate by the Europeans, chocolate is conquering new worlds, with sales booming from Asia to Brazil.

Every second, 95 tonnes of chocolate are wolfed down around the world, or three million tonnes a year, according to figures supplied by the annual Salon du Chocolat fair, which kicks off Wednesday in Paris.

The globalisation of chocolate is most striking in Japan, where annual sales are soaring by 25 percent and French chocolatiers are feted like stars while their Japanese counterparts now rank among the world’s best.

“Japan has converted en masse to chocolate in the past decade, with chocolate Salons in seven different cities,” said Francois Jeantet, cofounder of the Paris fair, which has spawned 21 sister events from New York to Shanghai.

For the Salon’s annual fashion show featuring life-sized chocolate dresses, this year’s model is a kimono-inspired number created by

French chocolatier Frederic Cassel -- who has three stores in Japan.

“We wanted to express Japanese tradition, cherry blossom in the wind,” in the long sleeves with chocolate flowers, said Cassel, who worked to a design by a young fashion student, Audrey Lempeseur.

The 15-kilo edible dress -- a month in the making -- will be slipped on just moments before the show, lest it should melt under the spotlights.

Afterwards, it will be shipped straight to Japan.

According to Jacques Pessis, president of the highly serious Chocolate Crunchers’ Club which each year rewards the best world chocolates, France and Japan are the current masters of the game.

“Thirty years ago Belgian and Swiss chocolate ruled the world.

These days French chocolate is known the world over. And more

and more Japanese chocolatiers, taking their inspiration from the French, are truly excellent.”

Japan aside, chocolate sales are also growing 30 percent year on year in China, while in India -- even though one in two Indians have never tasted chocolate -- growth is 20 percent, for a treat taken ultra sweet and milky.

“Nearly every country in the world is now part of the chocolate trade, including Asian countries and their colossal potential markets,” said Jeantet and his fellow founder Sylvie Douce.

Six multinational firms together account for 85 percent of the vast market: Hershey, Mars, Philip Morris, Nestle, Cadbury and Ferrero.

Producer countries like Brazil have turned into major consumers, while others like Vietnam or Indonesia are moving into cocoa growing.

POMPANO BEACH — Box by box they arrived, the once glittering costumes of Broadway legends and theatre memorabilia, now dirty, tattered and forgotten. There were painstakingly hand-beaded bodices and garments worn by Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett and Vanessa Williams, each more unkempt than the next, stored on rusty hangars and covered in black soot.

It was to be one of the largest collections of Broadway costumes in America. There were more than 500 boxes in all, newly purchased

by Marilynn Wick to add to her multimillion dollar collection of costumes at Costume World which she rents to professional theatres and high school productions.

Wick and her daughter Kimberly surveyed the treasures they had just purchased at a 2005 auction: a Judy Garland hat, probably from her TV show; Ginger Roger’s red sequin dress from “Hello Dolly;” Lou Diamond Phillip’s exquisite jewel encrusted jacket costume from his Tony-winning role in the “The King and I;” and Nathan Lane’s gangster suit from “Guys and Dolls.”

They knew they had to share it.

“We were going through boxes and I said, ‘Kim, are we really going to rent Judy Garland’s hat?” said 69year-old Marilynn Wick.

DENPASAR - A Japanese modern chain store is alleged to expand to Denpasar area. One of them is located in the area of Jalan Tukad Pakerisan, Denpasar.

As a matter of fact, the Denpasar Municipality has commitment to no longer issue any permit for modern stores other than 295 stores that have operated today.

When contacted on Sunday (Oct 28), the Head of Denpasar Licensing Office, AA Ray Soryawan, did not deny that his party had received information regarding the existence of modern chain store from Japan, Lawson. In response to that information, his party had made coordination with the civilian security guard and public order officer. “I’ve also received the information. A number of civilian guards were assigned to perform field monitoring a few days ago,” he said.

According to Ray Soryawan, the store had not been operated.

He said the operation of the chain store was actually selling fast food. If the store would later on want to open a business in Denpasar, his party would lead it to submit a restaurant permit because the permit for modern store had been stopped. “We refer to the Mayoral Decree No. 188.45/495/HK/2011 that only gives permit to the 295 modern stores that have been in operation

in Denpasar,” he said.

He added the presence of 295 operating modern stores would also be evaluated within the period of five years. Later, there would be a permanent permit and short-term permit only prevailing for five years. Hopefully, the modern store employers complied with the regulations, whether it was a chain store or not. “We also hope the central government will not issue any regulations going up against the local bylaws or regulations. Until this week, we have not received any permit application from the Lawson management,” he said.

When contacted separately, the Head of Civilian Security Guard and Public Order Officer of Denpasar, I Nyoman Puja, said there were at least four outlets of Lawson in the form of cafes that had been operating and selling food, such as the one on Jalan Raya Sesetan, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Waturenggong and Jalan Tukad Pakerisan. When asked whether the four premises had owned a permit, Puja confirmed that his party with the Licensing Office would check the completeness of permit to the store on Monday (Oct 29). “Yes, we are going to check it to location tomorrow (Monday—Ed),” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo) of Bali, IGM Dhordy, also confirmed the in-

formation about the presence of Lawson in Bali. However, his party could not give more information related to the presence of Lawson because it did not belong to the member of Aprindo Bali.

“Lawson is not the member of

Aprindo and never contacted Aprindo Bali. We do hope there will be no more infringement against the Mayoral Regulation regarding the modern stores.

Navy to intensify patrols ahead of BDF

DENPASAR - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) will step up its patrols in the waters off Bali prior to the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), which will be held from November 8 to 9, according to the commander of the Denpasar naval base, Col I Wayan Suarjaya.

“Although BDF is an annual event, we will intensify our patrols throughout the waters, particularly in several points considered vulnerable to security disturbances,” he said.

The patrols will involve not only naval officers, but also security personnel from other agencies, local residents and fishermen, he said.

Palestinians to seek UN recognition next month

RAMALLAH — The Palestinian president is moving forward with his plan to seek upgraded observer status at the United Nations next month, despite American and Israeli threats of financial or diplomatic retaliation, officials said Sunday.

The decision sets the stage for a new showdown between Israel and the Palestinians at the world body, following last year’s attempt by the Palestinians to seek status as a full member state. Although that initiative failed to pass the U.N. Security Council, it caused months of diplomatic tensions with Israel.

“We will go to the U.N. regardless of any threats,” said Tawfik Tirawi, a senior member of President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.

TOKYO — Honda’s quarterly profit surged 36 percent as Japanese automakers bounced back from last year’s tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan, but the company lowered its annual forecasts Monday because of a sales plunge in China.

Honda Motor Co. raked in an 82.2 billion yen ($1 billion) net profit for the July-September quarter. Sales jumped 20 percent to 2.27 trillion yen.

Honda has recovered strongly after being hit hard by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster that disrupted car production, and the floods in Thailand later that year.

But the Tokyo-based manufacturer of the Accord sedan, Fit compact and Asimo humanoid robot lowered its forecasts for the business year through March 2013. It cited the recent sales drop in China sparked by a territorial dispute that has set off violent protests in parts of China and a call to boycott Japanese goods.

It now expects to sell 4.1 million vehicles in the year through March 2013, down about 180,000 from the earlier projection to sell 4.3 million vehicles.

Still, that number is an improvement of more than a million vehicles over the 3.1 million Honda sold globally in the previous disaster-struck year.

Honda sold 996,000 vehicles during the fiscal second quarter, up from 678,000 vehicles a year earlier.

Honda said it must factor in the “recent situation in China,” as well as declining sales in Europe and South America, in forecasts for the full year.

The negative effect of an unfavorable currency is also expected to weigh, Honda said. A strong yen hurts the earnings of Japanese exporters such as Honda.

The dollar did not change that much against the yen in the second quarter, but the yen surged against the euro.

Honda now expects a 375 billion yen ($4.7 billion) net profit for the full fiscal year, sharply lower than the initial forecast for a 470 billion yen ($5.9 billion) profit. But even the new forecast will represent a 78 percent rebound from the 211.4 billion yen profit recorded in the previous year.

The company lowered its full year sales forecast to 9.8 trillion yen ($122 billion) from 10.3 trillion yen ($129 billion). Compared with the previous year, sales are now forecast to rise 23 percent.

BRUSSELS - Just a month ahead of what promises to be a very difficult summit on the EU’s 2014-20 budget, leaders are trading threats and blandishments, seeking advantage where they can to trim their bill.

The man in the middle, European Union president Herman Van Rompuy called this week for the 27 member states to be ready to compromise but with Britain and Denmark threatening a veto, that seems a lot to hope for just yet.

“I hope we can reach an accord in November,” Van Rompuy said.

“For that, we need something without which nothing is possible -- a sense of compromise, alongside the political will to find an accord.

If there is no willingness, then we will never get there,” he said.

In July, the European Commission proposed a budget of 1.03 trillion euros ($1.33 trillion), up 5.0 percent on the 2007-13 package, sparking howls of protest

from the seven major contributor states and demands for a cut of 100 billion euros or more.

Germany, France and Britain especially insist that with government budgets under pressure from all sides, the EU cannot expect to get away with such a large increase in spending.

“We can’t have EU spending going up and up,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said at the October 15-16 EU summit, threatening to veto any November accord which failed on that score.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt took a similar line Thursday, saying she would veto a budget which did not give Denmark a one billion kroner

(134 million euros, $174 million) rebate.

“Our key message to the other countries and what we are fighting for, is that we have to have a discount and that we do not wish to pay other rich countries’ rebates,” Thorning-Schmidt said, without naming her targets.

Denmark currently has no rebate on its EU budget contribution -- but Britain does and will jealously guard it, as Cameron has stressed time and time again.

Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria have also all negotiated rebates of various kinds, arguing that they are paying much more than other countries into the EU and not getting enough back in return.

Comissioner Johny Nelson Simanjuntak came to Bali as one of the speakers in Public Examination of The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn South Jakarta District Court’s acquittal of Anand Krishna from any criminal charges last November.

Dr Palguna stated assertively that an acquitted verdict could not be appealed according to article 67 of Indonesian Criminal Code Procedure because it would clearly violate the Article 28D (1) of the 1945 Indonesian Constitution stipulating that every person shall have the right of recognition, guarantee, protection, certainty before a just law, and of equal treatment before the law.

“When someone was dismissed of all criminal charges and rein-

stated his civil rights by the court, no appeal could be taken without breaching his/her constitutional rights. The appeal of the acquittal was also clearly violating the Article 67 of Indonesian Criminal Code Procedure,” said Dr Palguna.

According to him, article 67 states that an accused or public prosecutor shall have the right to appeal against a judgment of a court of first instance except against a judgment of acquittal, a dismissal of all charges which relates to a matter of the inappropriate application of law and a judgment under express procedures.

Meanwhile, Dr Surya Jaya Dharma found out a lot of irregularities and unlawful procedures concerning this case.

DENPASAR – Indonesian vaccine-maker Bio Farma President Director Iskandar said the company he leads ready to partner with vaccine manufacturers in developing and Islamic countries, particularly in the research and development of new vaccines.

“We hope that Bio Farma as the only vaccine manufacturer in Indonesia can be a hub or center for research and development of vaccines and serves as a partner to research new vaccines for developing countries,” Iskandar told reporters in Bali on Sunday.

Iskandar made the statement related to his readiness to host the meeting of the 13th Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers Networks (DCVMN) to be held in Bali on 31 October to 2 November 2012.

According to Iskandar, all vaccine producers in the world have relatively the same ultimate goal, namely to increase the availability and quality of the vaccine in order to achieve healthy communities.

He explained that another purpose of holding the DCVMN meeting is to jointly combat the spread of infectious diseases that are endemic in many developing countries. The move to be done by increasing the capacity and quality of vaccines and improving vaccine research and development.

Iskandar said regular meetings of vaccine manufacturers in developing countries are needed to encourage the production and distribution of high-quality vaccines selectively in the long term to meet the targets of the national immunization program for these countries.

Bio Farma president director said he had participated at Global Health Product Development Conference 2012 in Seattle, the United States 1-3 May 2012 where he gave a presentation on the achievements of Indonesia’s only vaccine manufacturer, which is now 122-year-old.

In the international meeting Iskandar explained Bio Farma has produced 11 types of vaccines and all have world-class recognition, namely the recognition of pre-qualification from World Health Organization (WHO).

This fact became a focus of interest for some partners of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the originator of the international meeting in Seattle.

Many of the partners of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation then had expressed interest in working with Bio Farma in conducting clinical trials and the development of vaccines, Iskandar pointed out.

The panelists at the meeting, among others represented Subhash Kapre (Serum Institute of India), Yang Xiaoming (China National Biotech Group), Akira Homma (Bio-Manguinhos), and Iskandar (Bio Farma).

At the meeting of the 13th DCVMN meeting in Bali, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is also scheduled to attend as a participant, represented by Dr. Kim Bush. More than 100 internasional vaccine researchers and experts have confirmed attendance at the conference.

Access to the gardens is just off the Champs Elysee avenue via an ornate wrought-iron gate

topped with gilt rooster, the French national symbol.

The gardens are open from noon to 5 p.m. the last Sunday of the month from October to March, and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. from April to September.

DAMASCUS - Air raids, clashes and car bombings shook Syria on Sunday, killing nearly 100 people, monitors said, as world powers look to pick up the pieces of a failed bid to bring in a Muslim holiday ceasefire.

Rebels stormed regime positions in the Damascus suburbs as air strikes pummelled opposition-held areas on the outskirts of the capital, activists and a watchdog said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier toll, said a regime air raid strike in the northwestern province of Idlib killed 18 people, including eight children and five women.

The four-day truce proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi already collapsed amid clashes, shelling and car bombings hours after it had been due to take effect with the start of Eid al-Adha holidays on Friday morning.

On the eve of the official end of the ceasefire, the army blamed its failure on “violations” by rebels, who say they have only reacted in self defence.

With hopes shattered of even a temporary halt to the 19 months of bloodshed in Syria, diplomats said Brahimi is looking ahead to new efforts to tackle the crisis.

He is to go to the UN Security Council in November with new proposals to push for talks between President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition, diplomats told AFP, and will head to Russia and China this week to discuss the crisis.

“The political process will not start until Assad and the opposition have battered each other so much that there is no choice. They are not there yet, but Brahimi has some ideas,” an envoy at the Security Council said.

On the ground, rebel forces seized three military posts in the Damascus suburb of Douma amid fierce fighting and killed four soldiers at another checkpoint in the region, the Syrian Observatory said.

A car bomb hit the northern Damascus district of Barzeh, wounding around 15 people and causing heavy damage, it said, while another one ripped through Sbeineh, southeast of the capital, without any casualties reported.

Regime warplanes hit the nearby towns of Irbin, Zamalka and Harasta, where the military has been trying for weeks to dislodge rebel forces, the group said.

They also struck a building in the Idlib provincial town of Bara, killing 18 people including eight children and five women, the Observatory said.

At least 99 people were killed nationwide, including 35 soldiers, 34 rebels and 30 civilians, according to a count from the Observatory.

The Britain-based Observatory relies on a countrywide network of activists, lawyers and medics in civilian and military hospitals.

INDONESIA Facebook used to kidnap, traffic Indonesian girls

DEPOK — When a 14-year-old girl received a Facebook friend request from an older man she didn’t know, she accepted it out of curiosity. It’s a click she will forever regret, leading to a brutal story that has repeated itself as sexual predators find new ways to exploit Indonesia’s growing obsession with social media.

The junior high student was quickly smitten by the man’s smooth online flattery. They exchanged phone numbers, and his attention increased with rapidfire texts. He convinced her to meet in a mall, and she found him just as charming in person.

They agreed to meet again.

After telling her mom she was going to visit a sick girlfriend on her way to church choir practice, she climbed into the man’s minivan near her home in Depok, on the outskirts of Jakarta.

The man, a 24-year-old who called himself Yogi, drove her an hour to the town of Bogor, West Java, she told The Associated Press in an interview.

There, he locked her in a small room inside a house with at least five other girls aged 14 to 17. She was drugged and raped repeatedly — losing her virginity in the first violent session.

After one week of torture, her captor told her she was being sold and shipped to the faraway island of Batam, known for its seedy brothels and child sex tourism that caters to men coming by boat from nearby Singapore.

So far this year, 27 of the 129 children reported missing to Indonesia’s National Commission for Child Protection are believed to have been abducted after meeting their captors on Facebook, said the group’s chairman, Arist Merdeka Sirait. One of those befriended on the social media site has been found dead.

In the month since the Depok girl was found near a bus terminal Sept. 30, there have been at least seven reports of young girls in Indonesia being abducted by people they met on Facebook. Although no solid data exists, police and aid groups that work on trafficking issues say it seems to be a particularly big problem in the Southeast Asian archipelago.

“Maybe Indonesia is kind of a unique country so far. Once the reports start coming in, you will know that maybe it’s not one of the countries, maybe it’s one of a hundred countries,” said An-

jan Bose, a program officer who works on child online protection issues at ECPAT International, a nonprofit global network that helps children in 70 countries.

“The Internet is such a global medium. It doesn’t differentiate between poor and rich. It doesn’t differentiate between the economy of the country or the culture.”

Websites that track social media say Indonesia has nearly 50 million people signed up for Facebook, making it one of the world’s top users after the U.S. The capital, Jakarta, was recently named the most active Twitter city by Paris-based social media monitoring company Semiocast.

In addition, networking groups such as BlackBerry and Yahoo Messenger are wildly popular on mobile phones.

Many young Indonesians, and their parents, are unaware of the dangers of allowing strangers to see their personal information online. Teenagers frequently post photos and personal details such as their home address, phone number, school and hangouts without using any privacy settings — allowing anyone trolling the net to find them and learn everything about them.

“We are racing against time, and the technology frenzy over Facebook is a trend among teenagers here,” Sirait said. “Police should move faster, or many more girls will become victims.”

The 27 Facebook-related abductions reported to the commission this year in Indonesia have already exceed 18 similar cases it received in all of 2011. Overall, the National Task Force Against Human Trafficking said 435 children were trafficked last year, mostly for sexual exploitation.

Many who fight child sex crimes in Indonesia believe the real numbers are much higher.

Missing children are often not reported to authorities. Stigma and shame surround sexual abuse in the world’s largest Muslimmajority country, and there’s a widespread belief that police will do nothing to help.

“resorted to outright kidnapping of girls and young women for sex trafficking within the country and abroad.”

Facebook says its investigators regularly review content on the site and work with authorities, including Interpol, to combat illegal activity. It also has employees around the world tasked with cracking down on people who attempt to use the site for

human trafficking .

“We take human trafficking very seriously and, while this behavior is not common on Facebook, a number of measures are in place to counter this activity,” spokesman Andrew Noyes said in an email.

He declined to give any details on Facebook’s involvement in trafficking cases reported in Indonesia or elsewhere.

President to visit London

From Britain the president will fly to Laos to attend the 9th summit meeting of Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

Del Potro stuns Federer to win Basel title Reuters

BASEL - Juan Martin del Potro, beaten in his six previous meetings with Roger Federer this year, turned the tables on the world number one to win a memorable Basel ATP final on Sunday.

Two of the three sets went to tiebreaks with the towering Argentine eventually winning 6-4 6-7 7-6 to claim his second title in a row following his win in Vienna one week ago and his fourth of the year.

The two were meeting for the first time since their epic Olympic Games semi-final when Federer eventually won in a 36-game final set.

There was no quarter given this time, either, in a match featuring long baseline rallies peppered with some stunning winners from both players.

Del Potro also lost to Federer in the quarter-finals of the Australian and French Opens, the Rotterdam final, the Indian Wells quarter-final and the

Dubai semi-finals this year.

“My serve worked, my forehand worked. It was really close, but this time in my favour, finally, after six losses and two big losses at the Olympic Games and Roland Garros,” world number eight Del Potro told reporters.

“It’s my turn,” added Del Potro, who has edged his way back towards the top despite a series of injuries including a wrist problem which forced him to miss most of the 2010 season.

“Very few players beat Federer and it shows me that I am getting closer to get the ones at the top.”

Del Potro, who has beaten Federer three times in 16 attempts including

the 2009 U.S. Open final, managed the only service break of the entire match in the fifth game of the first set.

Federer, who has won five of his seven finals in his Basel hometown, had to wait until the second game of the second set for his first break point which he failed to convert.

Del Potro had his only other break point of the match in the 11th game but a tiebreak was always on the cards, with the Swiss winning 7-5 to level the match after Del Potro had saved two set points.

That seemed to swing the match in Federer’s favour and the Swiss had three break points in the third game of the third set, but Del Potro held his nerve each time.

Leading 6-5, Del Potro had a glimmer of victory in the 12th game as he led 30-15 but Federer reeled off three aces in a row to send the set to another tiebreak.

Vettel dispels rumors of change to Ferrari Associated Press

Two-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull has quashed rumors he has signed a deal with Ferrari, seeking to reassure team members who see fresh reports he is preparing to join the Italian team.

“You don’t know every single one in the team and it is hard to speak to each of them, but if there is something published in the press, obviously there might be some concerns back in the factory,” Vettel told reporters

after winning the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday.

“But I’m 100 per cent behind them, just as they are 100 per cent behind me. At the moment, there is nothing to report and I’m very happy with Red Bull racing.” Rumors of a Vettel move gained momentum earlier this month when Felipe Massa signed a one-year contract extension with Ferrari for 2013, raising speculation a big-name replacement was being teed up for the following year.

Vettel has a contract with Red Bull through to the end of 2014, though

reportedly with conditions on the final year of the deal.

“It could be quite funny now, there is nothing to tell you, nothing I’ve signed, nothing has changed,” Vettel said after his fourth consecutive F1 victory. “It’s quite amazing, I don’t read that much and it is surprising to get to the circuit where you get all these questions.” Vettel currently leads the championship standings with 240 points. Alonso is the only other driver with a realistic chance to win the championship with 227 points.

Hernandez seals controversial United win at Chelsea

Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg could find himself in hot water after Chelsea lodged an official complaint about him using “inappropriate language” to two of their players in a tumultuous 3-2 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

Leaders Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end when Javier Hernandez scored a dubious-looking 75th minute winner for United after Clattenburg had shown red cards to Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres in quick succession in the final half hour.

“We have lodged a complaint to the Premier League match delegate with regards to inappropriate language used by the referee and directed at two of our players in two separate incidents,” a club spokesman told reporters.

“The match delegate will pass the complaint to the Football Association. We will make no further comment at this time.”

The club would not name the players in question or of what nature the remarks were, but the spokesman refused to deny that John Obi Mikel had visited the referee’s room after the game.

Mikel was booked for dissent during the second half.

Clattenburg made no comment but the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMO), which manages top English referees, said in a statement reported by media that the allegations are “being treated with the utmost seriousness”.

Clattenburg will co-operate fully and “welcomes the opportunity for the facts to be established,” it added.

LONDON - Javier Hernandez came off the bench to grab a controversial 3-2 victory for Manchester United at Premier League leaders Chelsea after the previously unbeaten hosts had been reduced to nine men in a tempestuous clash on Sunday.

The Mexican goal-poacher, looking suspiciously offside, tucked in the winner in the 75th minute to kill off a vibrant Chelsea side who had battled back from 2-0 down before having Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres sent off by referee Mark Clattenburg in the final half an hour.

Torres’s dismissal, for diving, led to a furious touchline row between Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo and his United counterpart Alex Ferguson who later said the Spaniard had deserved to go despite replays suggesting he was fouled.

Clattenburg was later the subject of a complaint by Chelsea over “inappropriate language” towards two players.

A David Luiz own goal gave United the lead after four minutes and

Robin van Persie fired the visitors 2-0 ahead soon after with his seventh league goal of the season.

Chelsea roared back with Juan Mata’s free kick and a Ramires header either side of the interval and United were on the ropes until Serbian right back Ivanovic was sent off just past the hour mark for bringing down Ashley Young.

Worse followed for Chelsea five minutes later when Torres tumbled on the edge of the area after apparent contact by Jonny Evans and was shown a second yellow card.

With the home crowd howling its disapproval and tempers fraying on the touchline, Hernandez - on as a substitute for Tom Cleverley - tapped in Rafael’s fierce cross while standing almost on the goalline.

United’s first win at Chelsea for 10 years lifted them back above neighbours Manchester City into second place on goal difference with 21 points, one point behind Chelsea who had ample reason to feel hard done by.

“We must be disappointed that key decisions were wrong,” Di Matteo told reporters.

“At 2-2 we looked like the team that was going to win the game. It was a good game between good teams and the official ruined it. Key decisions have to be right and you don’t want the referees to have such a big influence.”

Torres, not surprisingly, got little sympathy from Ferguson although the Scot acknowledged his side had enjoyed some luck.

BERLIN - Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the season came to an end as a late Sidney Sam header deflected in off defender Jerome Boateng to hand Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 win on Sunday.

Radamel Falcao scored his 10th league goal of the season to help Atletico Madrid stay neck-and-neck with Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 3-1 victory at home to basement side Osasuna on Sunday.

Champions Real Madrid lie eight points back in fourth place after Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored a brace in Palma to secure a 5-0 victory over Real Mallorca.

In-form Colombia striker Falcao pulled away from his marker and volleyed Atletico’s third high into the net after 73 minutes, sealing an eighth straight league victory for Diego Simeone’s side.

Atletico are second with 25 points from nine games, behind Barca on goal difference, after Tito Vilanova’s side thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0 away on Saturday when a double from Lionel Messi helped him reach 301 senior career goals.

Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg could find himself in hot water after Chelsea lodged an official complaint about him using “inappropriate language” to two of their players in a tumultuous 3-2 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

Leaders Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end when Javier Hernandez scored a dubious-looking 75th minute winner for United after Clattenburg had shown red cards to Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres in quick succession in the final half hour.

“We have lodged a complaint to the Premier League match delegate with regards to inappropriate language used by the referee and directed at two of our players in two separate incidents,” a club spokesman told reporters.

“The match delegate will pass the complaint to the Football Association. We will make no further comment at this time.”

The club would not name the players in question or of what nature the remarks were, but the spokesman refused to deny that John Obi Mikel had visited the referee’s room after the game.

Mikel was booked for dissent during the second half.

Clattenburg made no comment but the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMO), which manages top English referees, said in a statement reported by media that the allegations are “being treated with the utmost seriousness”.

Clattenburg will co-operate fully and “welcomes the opportunity for the facts to be established,” it added.

LONDON - Javier Hernandez came off the bench to grab a controversial 3-2 victory for Manchester United at Premier League leaders Chelsea after the previously unbeaten hosts had been reduced to nine men in a tempestuous clash on Sunday.

The Mexican goal-poacher, looking suspiciously offside, tucked in the winner in the 75th minute to kill off a vibrant Chelsea side who had battled back from 2-0 down before having Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres sent off by referee Mark Clattenburg in the final half an hour.

Torres’s dismissal, for diving, led to a furious touchline row between Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo and his United counterpart Alex Ferguson who later said the Spaniard had deserved to go despite replays suggesting he was fouled.

Clattenburg was later the subject of a complaint by Chelsea over “inappropriate language” towards two players.

Worse followed for Chelsea five minutes later when Torres tumbled on the edge of the area after apparent contact by Jonny Evans and was shown a second yellow card.

With the home crowd howling its disapproval and tempers fraying on the touchline, Hernandez - on as a substitute for Tom Cleverley - tapped in Rafael’s fierce cross while standing almost on the goalline.

United’s first win at Chelsea for 10 years lifted them back above neighbours Manchester City into second place on goal difference with 21 points, one point behind Chelsea who had ample reason to feel hard done by.

“We must be disappointed that key decisions were wrong,” Di Matteo told reporters.

“At 2-2 we looked like the team that was going to win the game. It was a good game between good teams and the official ruined it. Key decisions have to be right and you don’t want the referees to have such a big influence.”

Torres, not surprisingly, got little sympathy from Ferguson although the Scot acknowledged his side had enjoyed some luck.

BERLIN - Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the season came to an end as a late Sidney Sam header deflected in off defender Jerome Boateng to hand Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 win on Sunday.

Radamel Falcao scored his 10th league goal of the season to help Atletico Madrid stay neck-and-neck with Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a 3-1 victory at home to basement side Osasuna on Sunday.

Champions Real Madrid lie eight points back in fourth place after Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored a brace in Palma to secure a 5-0 victory over Real Mallorca.

In-form Colombia striker Falcao pulled away from his marker and volleyed Atletico’s third high into the net after 73 minutes, sealing an eighth straight league victory for Diego Simeone’s side.

Atletico are second with 25 points from nine games, behind Barca on goal difference, after Tito Vilanova’s side thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0 away on Saturday when a double from Lionel Messi helped him reach 301 senior career goals.

Del Potro stuns Federer to win Basel title Reuters

BASEL - Juan Martin del Potro, beaten in his six previous meetings with Roger Federer this year, turned the tables on the world number one to win a memorable Basel ATP final on Sunday.

Two of the three sets went to tiebreaks with the towering Argentine eventually winning 6-4 6-7 7-6 to claim his second title in a row following his win in Vienna one week ago and his fourth of the year.

The two were meeting for the first time since their epic Olympic Games semi-final when Federer eventually won in a 36-game final set.

There was no quarter given this time, either, in a match featuring long baseline rallies peppered with some stunning winners from both players.

Del Potro also lost to Federer in the quarter-finals of the Australian and French Opens, the Rotterdam final, the Indian Wells quarter-final and the

Dubai semi-finals this year.

“My serve worked, my forehand worked. It was really close, but this time in my favour, finally, after six losses and two big losses at the Olympic Games and Roland Garros,” world number eight Del Potro told reporters.

“It’s my turn,” added Del Potro, who has edged his way back towards the top despite a series of injuries including a wrist problem which forced him to miss most of the 2010 season.

“Very few players beat Federer and it shows me that I am getting closer to get the ones at the top.”

Del Potro, who has beaten Federer three times in 16 attempts including

the 2009 U.S. Open final, managed the only service break of the entire match in the fifth game of the first set.

Federer, who has won five of his seven finals in his Basel hometown, had to wait until the second game of the second set for his first break point which he failed to convert.

Del Potro had his only other break point of the match in the 11th game but a tiebreak was always on the cards, with the Swiss winning 7-5 to level the match after Del Potro had saved two set points.

That seemed to swing the match in Federer’s favour and the Swiss had three break points in the third game of the third set, but Del Potro held his nerve each time.

Leading 6-5, Del Potro had a glimmer of victory in the 12th game as he led 30-15 but Federer reeled off three aces in a row to send the set to another tiebreak.

Vettel dispels rumors of change to Ferrari Associated Press

Two-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull has quashed rumors he has signed a deal with Ferrari, seeking to reassure team members who see fresh reports he is preparing to join the Italian team.

“You don’t know every single one in the team and it is hard to speak to each of them, but if there is something published in the press, obviously there might be some concerns back in the factory,” Vettel told reporters

after winning the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday.

“But I’m 100 per cent behind them, just as they are 100 per cent behind me. At the moment, there is nothing to report and I’m very happy with Red Bull racing.” Rumors of a Vettel move gained momentum earlier this month when Felipe Massa signed a one-year contract extension with Ferrari for 2013, raising speculation a big-name replacement was being teed up for the following year.

Vettel has a contract with Red Bull through to the end of 2014, though

reportedly with conditions on the final year of the deal.

“It could be quite funny now, there is nothing to tell you, nothing I’ve signed, nothing has changed,” Vettel said after his fourth consecutive F1 victory. “It’s quite amazing, I don’t read that much and it is surprising to get to the circuit where you get all these questions.” Vettel currently leads the championship standings with 240 points. Alonso is the only other driver with a realistic chance to win the championship with 227 points.

DAMASCUS - Air raids, clashes and car bombings shook Syria on Sunday, killing nearly 100 people, monitors said, as world powers look to pick up the pieces of a failed bid to bring in a Muslim holiday ceasefire.

Rebels stormed regime positions in the Damascus suburbs as air strikes pummelled opposition-held areas on the outskirts of the capital, activists and a watchdog said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier toll, said a regime air raid strike in the northwestern province of Idlib killed 18 people, including eight children and five women.

The four-day truce proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi already collapsed amid clashes, shelling and car bombings hours after it had been due to take effect with the start of Eid al-Adha holidays on Friday morning.

On the eve of the official end of the ceasefire, the army blamed its failure on “violations” by rebels, who say they have only reacted in self defence.

With hopes shattered of even a temporary halt to the 19 months of bloodshed in Syria, diplomats said Brahimi is looking ahead to new efforts to tackle the crisis.

He is to go to the UN Security Council in November with new proposals to push for talks between President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition, diplomats told AFP, and will head to Russia and China this week to discuss the crisis.

“The political process will not start until Assad and the opposition have battered each other so much that there is no choice. They are not there yet, but Brahimi has some ideas,” an envoy at the Security Council said.

On the ground, rebel forces seized three military posts in the Damascus suburb of Douma amid fierce fighting and killed four soldiers at another checkpoint in the region, the Syrian Observatory said.

A car bomb hit the northern Damascus district of Barzeh, wounding around 15 people and causing heavy damage, it said, while another one ripped through Sbeineh, southeast of the capital, without any casualties reported.

Regime warplanes hit the nearby towns of Irbin, Zamalka and Harasta, where the military has been trying for weeks to dislodge rebel forces, the group said.

They also struck a building in the Idlib provincial town of Bara, killing 18 people including eight children and five women, the Observatory said.

At least 99 people were killed nationwide, including 35 soldiers, 34 rebels and 30 civilians, according to a count from the Observatory.

The Britain-based Observatory relies on a countrywide network of activists, lawyers and medics in civilian and military hospitals.

INDONESIA Facebook used to kidnap, traffic Indonesian girls

DEPOK — When a 14-year-old girl received a Facebook friend request from an older man she didn’t know, she accepted it out of curiosity. It’s a click she will forever regret, leading to a brutal story that has repeated itself as sexual predators find new ways to exploit Indonesia’s growing obsession with social media.

The junior high student was quickly smitten by the man’s smooth online flattery. They exchanged phone numbers, and his attention increased with rapidfire texts. He convinced her to meet in a mall, and she found him just as charming in person.

They agreed to meet again.

After telling her mom she was going to visit a sick girlfriend on her way to church choir practice, she climbed into the man’s minivan near her home in Depok, on the outskirts of Jakarta.

The man, a 24-year-old who called himself Yogi, drove her an hour to the town of Bogor, West Java, she told The Associated Press in an interview.

There, he locked her in a small room inside a house with at least five other girls aged 14 to 17. She was drugged and raped repeatedly — losing her virginity in the first violent session.

After one week of torture, her captor told her she was being sold and shipped to the faraway island of Batam, known for its seedy brothels and child sex tourism that caters to men coming by boat from nearby Singapore.

So far this year, 27 of the 129 children reported missing to Indonesia’s National Commission for Child Protection are believed to have been abducted after meeting their captors on Facebook, said the group’s chairman, Arist Merdeka Sirait. One of those befriended on the social media site has been found dead.

In the month since the Depok girl was found near a bus terminal Sept. 30, there have been at least seven reports of young girls in Indonesia being abducted by people they met on Facebook. Although no solid data exists, police and aid groups that work on trafficking issues say it seems to be a particularly big problem in the Southeast Asian archipelago.

“Maybe Indonesia is kind of a unique country so far. Once the reports start coming in, you will know that maybe it’s not one of the countries, maybe it’s one of a hundred countries,” said An-

jan Bose, a program officer who works on child online protection issues at ECPAT International, a nonprofit global network that helps children in 70 countries.

“The Internet is such a global medium. It doesn’t differentiate between poor and rich. It doesn’t differentiate between the economy of the country or the culture.”

Websites that track social media say Indonesia has nearly 50 million people signed up for Facebook, making it one of the world’s top users after the U.S. The capital, Jakarta, was recently named the most active Twitter city by Paris-based social media monitoring company Semiocast.

In addition, networking groups such as BlackBerry and Yahoo Messenger are wildly popular on mobile phones.

Many young Indonesians, and their parents, are unaware of the dangers of allowing strangers to see their personal information online. Teenagers frequently post photos and personal details such as their home address, phone number, school and hangouts without using any privacy settings — allowing anyone trolling the net to find them and learn everything about them.

“We are racing against time, and the technology frenzy over Facebook is a trend among teenagers here,” Sirait said. “Police should move faster, or many more girls will become victims.”

The 27 Facebook-related abductions reported to the commission this year in Indonesia have already exceed 18 similar cases it received in all of 2011. Overall, the National Task Force Against Human Trafficking said 435 children were trafficked last year, mostly for sexual exploitation.

Many who fight child sex crimes in Indonesia believe the real numbers are much higher.

Missing children are often not reported to authorities. Stigma and shame surround sexual abuse in the world’s largest Muslimmajority country, and there’s a widespread belief that police will do nothing to help.

“resorted to outright kidnapping of girls and young women for sex trafficking within the country and abroad.”

Facebook says its investigators regularly review content on the site and work with authorities, including Interpol, to combat illegal activity. It also has employees around the world tasked with cracking down on people who attempt to use the site for

human trafficking .

“We take human trafficking very seriously and, while this behavior is not common on Facebook, a number of measures are in place to counter this activity,” spokesman Andrew Noyes said in an email.

He declined to give any details on Facebook’s involvement in trafficking cases reported in Indonesia or elsewhere.

EU states set down markers for budget bunfight

TOKYO — Honda’s quarterly profit surged 36 percent as Japanese automakers bounced back from last year’s tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan, but the company lowered its annual forecasts Monday because of a sales plunge in China.

Honda Motor Co. raked in an 82.2 billion yen ($1 billion) net profit for the July-September quarter. Sales jumped 20 percent to 2.27 trillion yen.

Honda has recovered strongly after being hit hard by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster that disrupted car production, and the floods in Thailand later that year.

But the Tokyo-based manufacturer of the Accord sedan, Fit compact and Asimo humanoid robot lowered its forecasts for the business year through March 2013. It cited the recent sales drop in China sparked by a territorial dispute that has set off violent protests in parts of China and a call to boycott Japanese goods.

It now expects to sell 4.1 million vehicles in the year through March 2013, down about 180,000 from the earlier projection to sell 4.3 million vehicles.

Still, that number is an improvement of more than a million vehicles over the 3.1 million Honda sold globally in the previous disaster-struck year.

Honda sold 996,000 vehicles during the fiscal second quarter, up from 678,000 vehicles a year earlier.

Honda said it must factor in the “recent situation in China,” as well as declining sales in Europe and South America, in forecasts for the full year.

The negative effect of an unfavorable currency is also expected to weigh, Honda said. A strong yen hurts the earnings of Japanese exporters such as Honda.

The dollar did not change that much against the yen in the second quarter, but the yen surged against the euro.

Honda now expects a 375 billion yen ($4.7 billion) net profit for the full fiscal year, sharply lower than the initial forecast for a 470 billion yen ($5.9 billion) profit. But even the new forecast will represent a 78 percent rebound from the 211.4 billion yen profit recorded in the previous year.

The company lowered its full year sales forecast to 9.8 trillion yen ($122 billion) from 10.3 trillion yen ($129 billion). Compared with the previous year, sales are now forecast to rise 23 percent.

BRUSSELS - Just a month ahead of what promises to be a very difficult summit on the EU’s 2014-20 budget, leaders are trading threats and blandishments, seeking advantage where they can to trim their bill.

The man in the middle, European Union president Herman Van Rompuy called this week for the 27 member states to be ready to compromise but with Britain and Denmark threatening a veto, that seems a lot to hope for just yet.

“I hope we can reach an accord in November,” Van Rompuy said.

“For that, we need something without which nothing is possible -- a sense of compromise, alongside the political will to find an accord.

If there is no willingness, then we will never get there,” he said.

In July, the European Commission proposed a budget of 1.03 trillion euros ($1.33 trillion), up 5.0 percent on the 2007-13 package, sparking howls of protest

from the seven major contributor states and demands for a cut of 100 billion euros or more.

Germany, France and Britain especially insist that with government budgets under pressure from all sides, the EU cannot expect to get away with such a large increase in spending.

“We can’t have EU spending going up and up,” British Prime Minister David Cameron said at the October 15-16 EU summit, threatening to veto any November accord which failed on that score.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt took a similar line Thursday, saying she would veto a budget which did not give Denmark a one billion kroner

(134 million euros, $174 million) rebate.

“Our key message to the other countries and what we are fighting for, is that we have to have a discount and that we do not wish to pay other rich countries’ rebates,” Thorning-Schmidt said, without naming her targets.

Denmark currently has no rebate on its EU budget contribution -- but Britain does and will jealously guard it, as Cameron has stressed time and time again.

Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria have also all negotiated rebates of various kinds, arguing that they are paying much more than other countries into the EU and not getting enough back in return.

Comissioner Johny Nelson Simanjuntak came to Bali as one of the speakers in Public Examination of The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn South Jakarta District Court’s acquittal of Anand Krishna from any criminal charges last November.

Dr Palguna stated assertively that an acquitted verdict could not be appealed according to article 67 of Indonesian Criminal Code Procedure because it would clearly violate the Article 28D (1) of the 1945 Indonesian Constitution stipulating that every person shall have the right of recognition, guarantee, protection, certainty before a just law, and of equal treatment before the law.

“When someone was dismissed of all criminal charges and rein-

stated his civil rights by the court, no appeal could be taken without breaching his/her constitutional rights. The appeal of the acquittal was also clearly violating the Article 67 of Indonesian Criminal Code Procedure,” said Dr Palguna.

According to him, article 67 states that an accused or public prosecutor shall have the right to appeal against a judgment of a court of first instance except against a judgment of acquittal, a dismissal of all charges which relates to a matter of the inappropriate application of law and a judgment under express procedures.

Meanwhile, Dr Surya Jaya Dharma found out a lot of irregularities and unlawful procedures concerning this case.

DENPASAR – Indonesian vaccine-maker Bio Farma President Director Iskandar said the company he leads ready to partner with vaccine manufacturers in developing and Islamic countries, particularly in the research and development of new vaccines.

“We hope that Bio Farma as the only vaccine manufacturer in Indonesia can be a hub or center for research and development of vaccines and serves as a partner to research new vaccines for developing countries,” Iskandar told reporters in Bali on Sunday.

Iskandar made the statement related to his readiness to host the meeting of the 13th Developing Country Vaccine Manufacturers Networks (DCVMN) to be held in Bali on 31 October to 2 November 2012.

According to Iskandar, all vaccine producers in the world have relatively the same ultimate goal, namely to increase the availability and quality of the vaccine in order to achieve healthy communities.

He explained that another purpose of holding the DCVMN meeting is to jointly combat the spread of infectious diseases that are endemic in many developing countries. The move to be done by increasing the capacity and quality of vaccines and improving vaccine research and development.

Iskandar said regular meetings of vaccine manufacturers in developing countries are needed to encourage the production and distribution of high-quality vaccines selectively in the long term to meet the targets of the national immunization program for these countries.

Bio Farma president director said he had participated at Global Health Product Development Conference 2012 in Seattle, the United States 1-3 May 2012 where he gave a presentation on the achievements of Indonesia’s only vaccine manufacturer, which is now 122-year-old.

In the international meeting Iskandar explained Bio Farma has produced 11 types of vaccines and all have world-class recognition, namely the recognition of pre-qualification from World Health Organization (WHO).

This fact became a focus of interest for some partners of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the originator of the international meeting in Seattle.

Many of the partners of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation then had expressed interest in working with Bio Farma in conducting clinical trials and the development of vaccines, Iskandar pointed out.

The panelists at the meeting, among others represented Subhash Kapre (Serum Institute of India), Yang Xiaoming (China National Biotech Group), Akira Homma (Bio-Manguinhos), and Iskandar (Bio Farma).

At the meeting of the 13th DCVMN meeting in Bali, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is also scheduled to attend as a participant, represented by Dr. Kim Bush. More than 100 internasional vaccine researchers and experts have confirmed attendance at the conference.

DCVMN member countries are Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Republic of China, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam.

Navy to intensify patrols ahead of BDF

DENPASAR - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) will step up its patrols in the waters off Bali prior to the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), which will be held from November 8 to 9, according to the commander of the Denpasar naval base, Col I Wayan Suarjaya.

“Although BDF is an annual event, we will intensify our patrols throughout the waters, particularly in several points considered vulnerable to security disturbances,” he said.

The patrols will involve not only naval officers, but also security personnel from other agencies, local residents and fishermen, he said.

Palestinians to seek UN recognition next month

RAMALLAH — The Palestinian president is moving forward with his plan to seek upgraded observer status at the United Nations next month, despite American and Israeli threats of financial or diplomatic retaliation, officials said Sunday.

The decision sets the stage for a new showdown between Israel and the Palestinians at the world body, following last year’s attempt by the Palestinians to seek status as a full member state. Although that initiative failed to pass the U.N. Security Council, it caused months of diplomatic tensions with Israel.

“We will go to the U.N. regardless of any threats,” said Tawfik Tirawi, a senior member of President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.

“I expect the Israelis to take punitive measures against us, if we win this status, but this is our choice and we will not retract it.”

This year, the Palestinians are seeking “nonmember state” status in the U.N. General Assembly, where passage is assured. The 193-member assembly is dominated by developing nations sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Officials say they are looking for what they call a “quality” majority that includes European countries as well, though Germany and Britain, for instance, have been

While upgraded status would not change the situation on the ground, the Palestinians say the move is still significant. They will ask for international recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

They believe the U.N. vote would then require Israel to withdraw to the pre-1967 lines or face international legal action. Israel rejects a full return to those lines, and says the borders between Israel and a future Palestine must be reached through direct negotiations.

The Palestinians also hope to use upgraded status to join additional U.N. bodies, such as the International Criminal Court, where they could attempt to prosecute Israel on war crimes violations.

Hurricane Sandy grounded thousands of flights in the U.S. northeast Monday and upended travel plans across the globe, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe.

Asiana Airlines delayed its JFK flight from Seoul by 26 hours.

PARIS - History is coming full circle: borrowed from the Aztecs four centuries ago, perfected for the palate by the Europeans, chocolate is conquering new worlds, with sales booming from Asia to Brazil.

Every second, 95 tonnes of chocolate are wolfed down around the world, or three million tonnes a year, according to figures supplied by the annual Salon du Chocolat fair, which kicks off Wednesday in Paris.

The globalisation of chocolate is most striking in Japan, where annual sales are soaring by 25 percent and French chocolatiers are feted like stars while their Japanese counterparts now rank among the world’s best.

“Japan has converted en masse to chocolate in the past decade, with chocolate Salons in seven different cities,” said Francois Jeantet, cofounder of the Paris fair, which has spawned 21 sister events from New York to Shanghai.

For the Salon’s annual fashion show featuring life-sized chocolate dresses, this year’s model is a kimono-inspired number created by

French chocolatier Frederic Cassel -- who has three stores in Japan.

“We wanted to express Japanese tradition, cherry blossom in the wind,” in the long sleeves with chocolate flowers, said Cassel, who worked to a design by a young fashion student, Audrey Lempeseur.

The 15-kilo edible dress -- a month in the making -- will be slipped on just moments before the show, lest it should melt under the spotlights.

Afterwards, it will be shipped straight to Japan.

According to Jacques Pessis, president of the highly serious Chocolate Crunchers’ Club which each year rewards the best world chocolates, France and Japan are the current masters of the game.

“Thirty years ago Belgian and Swiss chocolate ruled the world.

These days French chocolate is known the world over. And more

and more Japanese chocolatiers, taking their inspiration from the French, are truly excellent.”

Japan aside, chocolate sales are also growing 30 percent year on year in China, while in India -- even though one in two Indians have never tasted chocolate -- growth is 20 percent, for a treat taken ultra sweet and milky.

“Nearly every country in the world is now part of the chocolate trade, including Asian countries and their colossal potential markets,” said Jeantet and his fellow founder Sylvie Douce.

Six multinational firms together account for 85 percent of the vast market: Hershey, Mars, Philip Morris, Nestle, Cadbury and Ferrero.

Producer countries like Brazil have turned into major consumers, while others like Vietnam or Indonesia are moving into cocoa growing.

POMPANO BEACH — Box by box they arrived, the once glittering costumes of Broadway legends and theatre memorabilia, now dirty, tattered and forgotten. There were painstakingly hand-beaded bodices and garments worn by Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett and Vanessa Williams, each more unkempt than the next, stored on rusty hangars and covered in black soot.

It was to be one of the largest collections of Broadway costumes in America. There were more than 500 boxes in all, newly purchased

by Marilynn Wick to add to her multimillion dollar collection of costumes at Costume World which she rents to professional theatres and high school productions.

Wick and her daughter Kimberly surveyed the treasures they had just purchased at a 2005 auction: a Judy Garland hat, probably from her TV show; Ginger Roger’s red sequin dress from “Hello Dolly;” Lou Diamond Phillip’s exquisite jewel encrusted jacket costume from his Tony-winning role in the “The King and I;” and Nathan Lane’s gangster suit from “Guys and Dolls.”

They knew they had to share it.

“We were going through boxes and I said, ‘Kim, are we really going to rent Judy Garland’s hat?” said 69year-old Marilynn Wick.

Kimberly Wick, a seamstress with a flair for the dramatics, narrates the tour, wearing a flowing, peach gown from the musical “Titanic,” charming the crowd with behind the scenes tidbits along the way.

There’s the time Pearl Bailey was too tired for her multiple costume changes (several are on display) in “Hello Dolly” and asked the audience if she could perform in the same dress throughout the show.

Eighteen thousand trim balls were hand sewn onto the silk costumes from the cast of “Once Upon a Mattress,” including Sarah Jessica Parker’s dress.

The Wicks’ own Julie Andrew’s dress from the Broadway show of “My Fair Lady.” They tried to buy the iconic black-and-white striped dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the film at an auction several years ago, estimating it would cost about $100,000. But it sold for more than $3 million, Kimberly Wick says.

For many of the shows, the Wicks own multiple sets: the original Broadway costumes, the Broadway revivals and two or three that their own wardrobe company has recreated to rent out for school productions.

The Wicks possess nearly 25 of Harold Hill’s reversible band jacket from “The Music Man.” And yes, all 76 jackets, hats and trombones are in storage above the museum.

The success of novel and film entitled Eat, Pray, Love (EPL) by the author Elizabeth Gilbert was expected to become a promotional medium for Ubud, Gianyar and Bali in general in drawing more visitors to this destination.

With the start and finish line at the Puri Lukisan Museum, the cycling tour took the participants to explore the route consisting of the Sambahan, Tegallalang, Taman and Monkey Forest as well as paid a visit to the house of I Ketut Liyer. Allegedly, a Japanese modern store expands to Denpasar Bali Post

DENPASAR - A Japanese modern chain store is alleged to expand to Denpasar area. One of them is located in the area of Jalan Tukad Pakerisan, Denpasar.

As a matter of fact, the Denpasar Municipality has commitment to no longer issue any permit for modern stores other than 295 stores that have operated today.

When contacted on Sunday (Oct 28), the Head of Denpasar Licensing Office, AA Ray Soryawan, did not deny that his party had received information regarding the existence of modern chain store from Japan, Lawson. In response to that information, his party had made coordination with the civilian security guard and public order officer. “I’ve also received the information. A number of civilian guards were assigned to perform field monitoring a few days ago,” he said.

According to Ray Soryawan, the store had not been operated.

He said the operation of the chain store was actually selling fast food. If the store would later on want to open a business in Denpasar, his party would lead it to submit a restaurant permit because the permit for modern store had been stopped. “We refer to the Mayoral Decree No. 188.45/495/HK/2011 that only gives permit to the 295 modern stores that have been in operation

in Denpasar,” he said.

He added the presence of 295 operating modern stores would also be evaluated within the period of five years. Later, there would be a permanent permit and short-term permit only prevailing for five years. Hopefully, the modern store employers complied with the regulations, whether it was a chain store or not. “We also hope the central government will not issue any regulations going up against the local bylaws or regulations. Until this week, we have not received any permit application from the Lawson management,” he said.

When contacted separately, the Head of Civilian Security Guard and Public Order Officer of Denpasar, I Nyoman Puja, said there were at least four outlets of Lawson in the form of cafes that had been operating and selling food, such as the one on Jalan Raya Sesetan, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Waturenggong and Jalan Tukad Pakerisan. When asked whether the four premises had owned a permit, Puja confirmed that his party with the Licensing Office would check the completeness of permit to the store on Monday (Oct 29). “Yes, we are going to check it to location tomorrow (Monday—Ed),” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Aprindo) of Bali, IGM Dhordy, also confirmed the in-

formation about the presence of Lawson in Bali. However, his party could not give more information related to the presence of Lawson because it did not belong to the member of Aprindo Bali.

“Lawson is not the member of

Aprindo and never contacted Aprindo Bali. We do hope there will be no more infringement against the Mayoral Regulation regarding the modern stores.

Therefore, it requires a strict control by the the municipal gov-

ernment,” he said while asking all the Aprindo members to comply with the Mayoral Regulation.

BANGLI - The Nangluk Merana ritual aiming to preserve the balance of nature as well as to ask for the welfare of all the people in the world was organized in the Ulun Danu Batur Temple, Batur customary village, Kintamani, on Sunday (Oct 28). Although this activity was an annual ritual, its implementation was quite special because it coincided with the great full moon in the fifth month of Balinese calendar so that it applied the ritual paraphernalia in the form of buffalo.

When met amidst officiating over the entire ritual procession, Jero Gede Batur Alitan suggested that other than aiming to plead for safety of all the people, the ritual was also intended to plead the Ulun Danu Batur deity in order all the people in the world were freed from any disaster, whether caused by nature or human acts. “We’re not just asking so that farmers could be bestowed with abundant water supply and maximum crops and kept away from pests and diseases, but also invoking so that mankind is freed from any conflicts,” he hoped.

Considering the importance of nangluk merana ritual, his party expected that all subak organizations in Bali could say prayers as long as the deities were abiding until next Wednesday (Oct 31).

Procession of the nangluk merana ritual in the Ulun Danu Batur was commenced on Monday (Oct 22) comprising the activities like neteg, nyuci, nanceb sunari and makarya sanganan. Meanwhile, on Sunday (Oct 28), the ritual procession was filled with neteg bagia pulakerti, melaspas bagia pulakerti, pepada wewalungan and resumed with the temple anniversary.

SINGARAJA - Aside from being accidentally cleared, the disturbing growth of mangrove forest at Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdistrict, is in fact caused by local residents. To prevent the more serious condition, the government is asked to assist local farmers to produce artificial fodder.

Sustainability condition at risk makes the tourism of Pejarakan village apprehensive. Some businessmen claim to frequently see the behavioral acts of people where they are coming into the mangrove forest freely.

No officials ever prohibit the people from going into the forest whereas they often clear the twigs of mangrove to be made into fodder for their cows and goats. As the mangrove plants are often disturbed, their growth is disrupted. Even, many mangrove plants die because their leaves and twigs have been cleared for fodder.

“The growth of mangrove in this forest is slow. Many plants die as their leaves or twigs are cleared for fodder,” said a foreigner who opened

a tourism business at Darma Garuda hamlet, Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdistrict.

According to him, the damage due to being cleared by residents for fodder could be overcome if the government was serious about protecting the mangrove forests. The government could provide assistance to produce artificial fodder, so that people would not have to clear the leaves or twigs of mangrove forest. “If possible, the government can provide local people with the assistance to produce artificial fodder, so that they will no longer clear the mangrove,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission B of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, asserted that his

party positively appreciated the entrepreneur who paid attention to the preservation of mangrove forest. However, the suggestion for the government to help residents make artificial fodder could not be realized individually. If the community established a group, the government could help them through technical institution. Even, other than helping produce artificial fodder, the government could also provide other helps such as in the form of calf and goatling. “Please establish a group of local residents and then submit a proposal of assistance.

We in the House will encourage the needs of the group as long as it is intended for the common interest,” he affirmed. (kmb)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Affleck’s ‘Argo’ tops North American box office “Argo,” based on a true story about six Americans spirited out of Iran during the 1979-80 hostage crisis, was the top movie in North America this weekend with $12.3 million in tickets sold, industry estimates showed Sunday.

Bali Starling at Karangsewu disappears Bali Post

JEMBRANA - A number of Bali Starlings which are observed at Karangsewu, Gilimanuk, have disappeared again lately. Allegedly, those protected birds in the West Bali National Park (TNBB) fear to nest at Karangsewu because of bustling human activities.

Previously, the distribution of Bali Starling after being reintroduced from their breeding has reached the Gulf of Gilimanuk. The residents precisely found the birds in mangrove forest at Karangsewu and since then they were monitored by the officers of TNBB. Lately, the birds vanished again and were alleged to go back into the forest on the peninsula of Prapat Agung.

“About two months ago, the Bali Starlings were indeed seen, but later on they were no longer here (Karangsewu—Ed). Probably, they were afraid of seeing many people,” explained Sukaji, 50, a resident of Karangsewu, Gilimanuk.

Though the Karangsewu remains to belong to the TNBB area, it is also often used for recreation site by local people. Allegedly, the

motorcycles and cars coming into location near the nest of Bali Starling have caused them to be unwilling to go back to Karangsewu.

Since the bird bearing the Latin name Leucopsar rothschildi is protected, it is almost never seen again at Gilimanuk. Therefore, the discovery of Bali Starling at Karangsewu is an encouraging progress over the past 10 years.

Local residents with the TNBB officers keep watch and maintain the breeding of the birds. Unfortunately, their existence cannot last longer and disappears again from the monitoring.

When being discovered some time ago, those birds did not wear bracelet. In other words, they were not the birds originating from the reintroduction, but the result of wild breeding in the TNBB. The Section Head of Region III TNBB, Seno Pramudita, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Oct 28) justified if the Bali Starling was no longer seen at

Karangsewu. The birds could only survive there for about 1-2 months because the area had been already touched by human. “Well, they may now have come into the area around the Prapat Agung Peninsula,” he explained. Karangsewu which belongs to the territory of TNBB is also used as a utilization area.

According to Seno, at the moment hundreds of Bali Starlings lived in West Bali. Among them, 129 birds lived in the breeding of the TNBB, 33 birds in the breeding of the adjacent community and 12 others had been reintroduced. (kmb26)
