Idol guitarist Steve Stevens played him ‘Happy Birthday’ in the middle of a solo. Then Idol called Henrichsen onto the stage for a rendition of the song. Henrichsen’s ‘80s cover band opened for the show.

Idol says Henrichsen’s effort stood out from other fan requests because his campaign involved four “Billy Idol Aid” charity concerts that raised $13,000 for the Northwest Harvest food bank and the American Red Cross. Idol says playing Henrichsen’s party in Seattle might help fans see another side of him.

The effort of Denpasar Police Criminal Research under Ambariyadi Wijaya to solve motorcycle robbery that happened at Legian Street behind Gang VVIP, Kuta is successful.

After just one day, police found two accused who are pupils initialed YV (15) from a Denpasar Junior High School and DI (14) from Kerobokan Junior High. The two were captured when they about to sell the motorcycles in a secondhand market at Gunung Agung Street, Denpasar last Friday (26/10). “The motorcycle they took was Yamaha Jupiter MX owned by Kadek Surya Negara (19). Is this the only time they do this, the case is still being developed,” Ambariyadi stated.

Meanwhile a police source stated both accused were around Kuta on Thursday (25/10) evening around 1 am and saw the motorcycle and its keys are still on it. YV then took the motorcycle.

After they took it, they escaped with it and brought it to Batanta Street, Denpasar which then the motorcycle parts were taken off to avoid any trace such as its plate number and the bike then hidden at a cemetery on the same street.

The victim reported it to the police which then police took action including supervising the secondhand market which then the two were seen then captured after one officer pretended being a customer. The two were found selling it with no documents which then later brought to the headquarters. “Police also found the thrown out original number plate,” the police source concluded. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Cocaine, Marijuana in Italian Cities’ Air

Researchers at Italy’s Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research have published the results of a year-long study that monitored psychotropic substances in the air of eight Italian cities: Bologna, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome, Turin and Verona.

The scientists found trace quantities of marijuana and cocaine in the air of all eight cities, with the highest total drug concentrations in Turin and the lowest in Palermo. Other substances monitored included nicotine and caffeine, which were also detected in all of the cities.

But the miniscule concentrations detected — about .26 nanograms of cocaine per meter cubed in Turin, where levels of that drug were highest — are not nearly enough to alter the mind states of Italy’s city dwellers.

A typical grain of salt weighs about 80,000 nanograms.

The authors of the study say their research gives insight into geographical drug-use trends (while Turin seems to have the most active cocaine trade, the college towns of Florence and Bologna have the most free-floating marijuana particles) and hope the results will be used to inform policy.

Cocaine use in Italy has also left an imprint on other parts of the environment. In 2005, scientists at Milan’s Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research checked the Po River in northern Italy for benzoylecgonine, a unique byproduct of cocaine that’s expelled in a user’s urine. Their study found levels that corresponded to the daily consumption of about 8.8 pounds (4 kilograms) of cocaine in the region.

In America, no analogous survey of psychotropic drugs in urban air has been published. But trace quantities of a range of pharmaceuticals, from epilepsy medication to sex hormones, have been found in American drinking-water sources.

Biofeedback Video Game Helps Kids Control Anger If you can’t help children with anger problems through psychotherapy alone, try a video game. But not just any video game: RAGE Control, developed at Boston Children’s Hospital, uses biofeedback to encourage kids to control their emotions, and researchers report positive results.

In the “Space Invaders”-like game, kids shoot at enemy spaceships and leave friendly ones alone. During the study, children wore a monitor that tracked their heart rate and displayed it on screen. If their heart rate went above a certain level, they could no longer fire on the enemy ships.

Peter Ducharme, the study’s lead researcher, says that while shooting games are sometimes associated with problems such as increased aggression in youths, they chose to create this kind of game because the kids got more involved in them.

“These are games that are familiar and enjoyable to kids, and teaches kids how to stay in emotional control and avoid reacting impulsively, which is why we believe we see a reduction in anger,” Ducharme said in an email to TechNewsDaily.

Anger issues are one of the more common mental health disorders among teenagers. According to research from Harvard Medical School published in July 2012, nearly 8 percent of teens display regular violent outbursts.

In a study of two groups of youths ages 9 to 17, the group that played the game after receiving standard therapy for anger showed significant improvement at keeping their heart rate down compared to the group that received standard treatment alone.

The children who played games decreased anger scores in the intensity of anger at a particular time, the frequency of angry feelings over time and the expression of anger toward others or objects (such as swearing at or insulting people, or punching walls or breaking belongings).

The damage is feared to be getting more severe following the issuance of permit by Governor of Bali related to the management of mangrove forest by investor at an area of 102.22 hectares for 55 years built with a number of tourism facilities such as restaurants and spas. If the damage to mangrove forest persists, the South Bali is predicted to sink.

and 10 percent of private space.

At the moment, the city of Denpasar still indeed complied with the provisions of the Law. The use of 102 hectares of mangrove forest would reduce the green open space of Denpasar. In the future, it would probably continue to decrease if the government itself did not want to preserve it and casually gave permission to investors. “Denpasar is very poor with green open space.

DENPASAR - Training ship of the Sudarshini Indian Navy Ship (INS) anchored in Benoa Harbor, Denpasar, around 09:00 a.m. on Saturday (Oct 27). The ship with a length of 54 meters and equipped with 20 sails marked the 20-year relationship between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The training ship with 73 crews consisted of 32 sailors, 34 cadets and seven officers would cover a distance of 12,217 miles with the voyage plan of around 6 months and will anchor back in India in the upcoming March 2013.

Captain of the INS Sudarshini, Shyam Sundar, said that during the voyage in Indonesia, the INS Sudarshini had a layover in Padang, West Sumatra and Bali.

The ship would anchor back in Manado on November 10-13.

“It sailed the traditional route that had ever been covered by Indian traders about 5,000 years ago in the trading activities with the ASEAN region, including the dissemination of culture and religion,” he said.

sage, the vessel was expected to bring together young people from Indonesia, India and the ASEAN in improving the ‘people-topeople contact’ in strengthening the cooperative relationship in the future.

The ship newly launched on September 15 was scheduled to drop in nine countries and 13 harbors in ASEAN. Meanwhile, the Navy Base Commander of Denpasar, I Wayan Suarjaya, said that during the five-day visit in Bali there was no specific mission conducted with the Navy ranks. “There is no specific mission. They just train the cadets before becoming a naval officer,” he said.

As part of the voyage for the training ship, the National Navy of Indonesia had placed two officers from Padang to Bali to increase the knowledge of the naval officers of both countries. Later, the training ship would be open to the public on Sunday (Oct 28) until Monday (Oct 29) and also be visited by students from several schools in Bali.

Granny Luh Windia, 80, on Friday (Oct 26) seemed to gaze at her house located at Kedampal hamlet, Datah village, Abang, Karangasem. The simple stonewalled house of the old widow suddenly collapsed last week whereas she said it did not rain or no tremor occurred.

Windia suspected her house wall along five meter in the rear collapsed because the walls of the stone house only applying clay as the adhesive had been old. She estimated the wall of the house was built 30 years ago.

Windia said her party had reported the incident on the collapse of her house wall to local headman and was resumed to subdistrict head. She hoped there would be an aid from the government that could help relieve her burden. However, so far there had been no signs indicating the

government’s attention.

For security and avoiding sunburn and coldness at night after the collapse of the wall, Windia was helped by her son cover up the hole in the back wall with an old tarp. “It just avoids her from being cold at night,” said one of the residents who lived in the eastern foothills of Mount Agung regularly hit by forest fire every dry season.

On the other hand, the hamlet chief of Kedampal, I Wayan Bakti, said that granny Windia should be helped for the disaster afflicting her. She was fairly lucky as some cubic meters of the wall stones did not collapse into the room.

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. - Forget distinctions like tropical storm or hurricane. Don’t get fixated on a particular track. Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

“We’re looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people,” said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy barrelled north from the Caribbean — where it left nearly five dozen dead — to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn’t matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

“This is not a coastal threat alone,” said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “This is a very large area.”

President Barack Obama was

monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday as hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland and the state was set to close its casinos. New York’s governor was considering shutting down the subways to avoid flooding and half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds. It was about 275 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving north-

east at 14 mph as of 2 a.m. Sunday.

Forecasters said the storm was spreading tropical storm conditions across the coastline of North Carolina, and they were expected to move up the mid-Atlantic coastline late Sunday. Experts said the storm was most likely to hit the southern New Jersey coastline by late Monday or early Tuesday.

Governors from North Carolina, where heavy rain was expected Sunday, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

The storm forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in the swing state of Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama cancelled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He cancelled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.

ANCHORAGE — Emergency sirens sounded around Hawaii late Saturday warning about an oncoming tsunami, after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Canada.

Even as emergency officials urged people along Hawaii’s coasts to move to higher ground, officials in North America downgraded a tsunami warning to an advisory for southern Alaska and British Columbia. They also issued an advisory for areas of northern California and southern Oregon.

A small tsunami created by the magnitude 7.7 quake was barely noticeable in Craig, Alaska, where the first wave or surge was recorded Saturday night.

The wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches, much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit in the Queen Charlotte Islands area, followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock several minutes later. The quake was felt in Craig and other southeast Alaska communities, but Zidek said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coastal areas of southeast Alaska, down the western Canadian coast to the tip of Vancouver Island.

Later Saturday evening, the warning for those areas was downgraded to an advisory, while a warning was issued for Hawaii.

Officials said a tsunami wave could hit the islands by 10:30 p.m.

Saturday (1:30 a.m. PDT).

Local television stations in Hawaii were running live news updates and warning tourists to check with hotels. At first, officials said the islands weren’t in any danger of a tsunami, but they later issued a warning, saying there had been a change in sea readings.

In addition, officials issued an advisory for areas from Gualala Point, Calif., about 80 miles northwest of San Francisco, to the Douglas-Lane county line in Oregon, about 10 miles southwest of Florence.

A tsunami warning means an area is likely to be hit by a wave, while an advisory means there may be strong currents, but that widespread inundation is not expected to occur. The U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska said it was warning warn everyone with a boat on the water to prepare for a potential tsunami.

The first wave hit Craig about two hours after the earthquake.

“It started off where it might be a 3-foot wave, and it kept getting downgraded,” Craig Mayor Dennis Watson said. “And the last time we heard, it was less than 1 foot.”

It actually was recorded at 4 inches. Watson said he was downtown on the waterfront, and had his car lights shining on pylons.

“I didn’t even see the surge. I watched the pylons. And the tides came in about four or five inches.

The surge would leave a wet spot as it would go back out, and we never did see that,” he said.

There could be subsequent waves in Craig, but an official with the tsunami warning center didn’t think it would amount to much.

The first wave “typically is not the largest but nevertheless we don’t expect the maximum wave height to be large,” said Bill Knight.

In pursuit of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, each candidate is starting to make his closing arguments. The goal is to win over the narrow slice of undecided, independent voters, moderates and women in particular, and to persuade supporters to vote on Nov. 6, if not earlier in the many states where voting is already under way. Roughly one-third of the electorate will have voted before Election Day. Presidents are not elected by national popular vote, but in state-bystate contests that allocate electoral votes. Each state gets one electoral vote for each of its representatives in the House and Senate. The winner needs a majority of the 538 electoral votes. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. There are nine contested battleground states — which are not reliably Democratic or Republican — that are too close to call.

BEIJING - Lawyers representing the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao have rejected claims made by the New York Times on Friday that they have accumulated at least $2.7 billion in “hidden riches”, Hong Kong media reported on Sunday.

The New York Times, citing corporate and regulatory records, reported on Friday that Wen’s mother, siblings and children had amassed the majority of their wealth since Wen was named Vice Premier in 1998.

In a statement issued late on Saturday and carried by Hong Kong television as well as the South China Morning Post and Sing Tao Daily newspapers, Bai Tao of the Junhe Law Office and Wang Weidong of the Grandall Law Firm said the wealth “does not exist”.

They also denied that Wen had acted improperly or engaged in business activities himself, and said his relatives had not profited in any way from his tenure as premier and had no influence on

Wen’s “formulation and execution of policies”.

The statement said Wen’s mother had never received any income or property apart from her salary and pension.

Telephone calls made to the law firms by Reuters were not answered.

The Times’ report said the names of family members “have been hidden behind layers of partnerships and investment vehicles involving friends, work colleagues and business partners”.

It said his family’s holdings include a Beijing villa development project, a tire factory in northern China, a company involved in building some of the venues for Beijing’s 2008 Olympics including the “Bird’s Nest” main

stadium, and Ping An Insurance, one of the world’s largest financial services companies.

The New York Times report came at a sensitive time for Beijing, with China about to undergo a once-in-a-decade change of leadership in which Wen will step down as premier.

The newspaper’s websites in English and Chinese were immediately blocked in China, and searches for the New York Times as well as the names of Wen’s children and wife were blocked on China’s main Twitter-like microblog service.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily briefing on Friday that the report “smears China’s name and has ulterior motives”.

After 2002, Indonesian forces worked with Australia and other countries to crack down on the al Qaeda-linked Southeast Asian militant group Jemiah Islamiah that was behind the bombs.

The hunt led to the arrest of hundreds of militants. Many were killed in shootouts and the three main perpetrators of the bombings were convicted and executed by firing squad in 2008.

HASMI first surfaced in 2009 as a small “above ground extremist” organization based in West Java and with links to the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), said Todd Elliott, a terrorism analyst at Concord Consulting in Jakarta.

HASMI participated in protests against churches in West Java in 2010 as well as protests against Israel and their overall goal was the establishment of Sharia law in Indonesia, he said.

Until now, HASMI has not been linked to illegal activity. It existed, like the FPI, as a militant pressure group separate from Indonesia’s banned militant organizations, Elliott said.

“They (HASMI) definitely pose a very real threat. We are seeing the next step in a bigger trend of above ground extremist groups crossing over into violence,” he told Reuters.

Members of the FPI had also been implicated in previous attacks, including a suicide attack on a mosque used by police in Cirebon, West Java, in 2011, he said.

The suspected militants could be former members of HASMI, a Salafi group, said Jim Della-Giacomo, Southeast Asia project director at the International Crisis Group think tank.

Salafi Muslims are generally against violence but there are cases in which they turned to violence, Della-Giacomo said.

“The apparent choice of the U.S. embassy as a target shows that the so-called ‘far enemy’ is still a desirable target among Indonesian jihadis ... and not just Indonesian police or the so-called ‘near enemy’ who have been preferred in recent times,” he said.

The group’s name links them to a militant group operating in Kashmir and it is possible that some of its members may have trained with the Kashmiri group, said Damien Kingsbury, a professor at Deakin University in Australia.

HASMI’s members would also likely have at least informal links with other militants in Indonesia and the group’s existence is further evidence of the continuing threat, said Kingsbury, an expert on Indonesia.

JAKARTA — An orangutan that was shot with an air rifle has been rescued in the Indonesian part of Borneo, and rescuers are working to remove 104 pellets from her body, a conservationist said Saturday.

The wounded female ape was discovered this month on a palm oil plantation in Central Kalimantan province, according to Tigor Nainggolan, a manager with the British-based Orangutan Foundation.

It’s not known who shot the orangutan, believed to be about 15 years old.

Nainggolan said veterinarians managed to remove 32 of the pellets lodged in her body and head during a three-hour surgery on Oct. 20 at a hospital in the town of Pangkalan Bun, where an X-

ray found 37 bullets in her head and 67 others in the body.

He added that another operation will be performed depending on her condition.

The ape, named Aan, was blinded in her left eye by the pellets.

Indonesia is home to about 90 percent of the orangutans left in the wild, but half its plush rain forest been cleared in the past half-century in the rush to supply the world with timber, pulp, paper and more recently, palm oil.

CANBERRA - Australia unveiled a long-term plan to boost trade with a booming Asia on Sunday, aiming to lift Asian input into its economy to one third by 2025 from 25 percent now, via more business with China and India in particular.

Releasing a new policy document, ‘Australia in the Asian Century’, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Australia was well placed to benefit from the economic rise of China and India, and to boost trade and investment with the broader region.

“Whatever else this century brings, it will bring Asia’s return to global leadership, Asia’s rise.

This is not only unstoppable, it is gathering pace,” Gillard said.

The plan has few specific policy announcements, but targets Asian tourism and greater expected demand for food and education to match Asia’s appetite for mineral resources that has fuelled a long mining boom in Australia. It also targets more Asian investment into Australia and lower trade barriers, although does not recommend changing Australia’s foreign investment

rules, which include intense scrutiny of planned investments from overseas state-owned firms.

Australia is a member of the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group, and is one of the 11 nations involved in negotiations for a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), both of which aim to liberalise regional trade.

Since the early 1970s, when Australia set up formal diplomatic relations with China, and Japan cemented its role as Australia’s top trading partner, Australia has regularly tried to deepen its Asian ties to cash in on regional economic growth. Since then, China has become Australia’s top trading partner, ahead of Japan, the United States and South Korea.

The policy document targets stronger trade and bilateral links with neighbouring Indonesia, and with a booming India, where Gillard visited earlier this month.

The ‘Asian Century’ policy also aims to ensure that by 2025, one in three board members of Australia’s top 200 companies will have a deep knowledge of Asia, while all school children will have the chance to learn an Asian language.

DETROIT — Toyota has widened its global sales lead over General Motors after bouncing back from a series of natural disasters.

The company said Friday it sold 7.4 million vehicles globally in the first nine months of this year — 450,000 more than General Motors.

While Toyota’s sales rose 28 percent in that period, GM’s rose 2.5 percent, to 6.95 million cars and light-duty trucks.

Toyota’s factories were hobbled by an earthquake and tsunami in early 2011, leaving it short of cars in the U.S. and other regions. But now the company has recovered, and is building and selling more vehicles globally. Germany’s Volkswagen AG is also seeing strong global sales.

GM is more concerned with profitable growth than the global sales race, spokesman Jim Cain said.

Toyota has made similar statements, but executives concede privately that the crown is a matter of corporate pride for both companies. GM was

the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

But Toyota faces a challenge in keeping its lead this year. Sales are falling in China because of a territorial dispute with Japan. Japan nationalized islands in the East China Sea that are also claimed by China and Taiwan. The move set off violent protests in China and a widespread call to boycott Japanese goods.

Toyota, which makes the Prius hybrid, Camry sedan and Lexus luxury models, had planned to sell 1 million vehicles in China this year.

But the company no longer expects to reach that number. It has not given a new target.

In September, Toyota’s vehicle sales in China dropped to 44,100 vehicles, from 86,000 a year earlier. In August, Toyota sold 75,280 vehicles in China, down 15 percent from the same month last year.

Even if Toyota’s China sales fall short of 1 million, Nomura Securities Co. auto analyst Masataka Kunugimoto expects them to gradually recover to 900,000 vehicles for the year.

“We don’t expect this kind of drop to continue,” he said. “The Chinese market is still growing.”

Still, he sees GM and other nonJapanese manufacturers getting a sales boost as Chinese buyers avoid Japanese products.

Last year, Toyota’s production was hit by the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan last year and then by flooding in Thailand. Its sales were also dented by massive U.S. safety recalls. That combination of problems dropped Toyota to No. 3 in global sales after GM and Volkswagen.

VW is closing in on GM after notching big sales gains in the U.S. this year. The maker of the Passat and Jetta cars sold 6.7 million light vehicles from January through September, up 9.7 percent from a year earlier. But VW’s challenge could fall short this year because Europe’s weak economy has hurt sales in that region.

GM also has problems on its home turf. Sales growth in the U.S. — its biggest market — is lagging. Sales are up 3.4 percent through September, far behind the 15-percent growth for the industry as a whole.

Besides, it was also kindled by many individual factors.

In addition, amidst the completely difficult condition farmers were unable to preserve the survival of their family. Their agricultural products could no longer suffice their needs properly. Not to mention, the land tax remained to hold them amidst the desire to maintain the land owned by their parents.

In this case, it was required a political will of the government to protect the existence of such farmlands. Unfortunately, the existing regulations

had always been late and sometimes it did not exist. “Amidst the excessive condition, we can only give an understanding as the saying goes that when in Rome, do as the Romans do,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Headman of Batubulan Kangin (Batuyang), Wayan Swarjaya, said it was impossible for him to prohibit people from selling their land. Such conditions had occurred since the 1990s, while the housing development occurred around the early 2000s. Admittedly, the current population of the territory had reached 1,500 people.

Swarjaya judged that to address the issue was required a concerted effort from top to bottom. Political will of the government, especially in protecting the agriculture, was highly needed to minimize the rate of fast-growing land conversion.

Existence of Batubulan and Batubulan Kangin village was very strategic geographically. The atmosphere was not so noisy, close to Denpasar and some areas in East Bali. It had made the area their choice to live. So far, the growing settlement was dominated by people from Karangasem, Klungkung, Bangli, Gianyar and Buleleng. (kmb16)

BANDUNG - At least 106 researchers and experts will attend the 13th annual general Meeting of Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN) in Bali, slated for October 31-November 2, 2012.

“We’ve already received confirmation from 106 participants that they will attend the event in Bali next week,” Rahman Roestan, corporate secretary of Indonesian vaccinemaker Bio Farma, told newsmen here on Saturday.

Roestand said in addition to participants representing the 14 DCVMN member countries, the meeting will also feature presentations and discussions from vaccine experts and government officials from the United States, Europe.

He noted that the list of speakers includes Dr. Kim Bush of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, whose speech is entitled `Programmes to Improve Global Health: Why and How, ‘and Dr. Shanelle Hall of the UNICEF Supply Division, who is scheduled to speak on UNICEF’s strategy for forecasting vaccine demands and working with countries and manufacturers.

Further, Indonesian top vaccine researcher, Dr. Mahendra Suhardono, will preside over a panel discussion featuring speakers Dr. Tjandra Yoga of the Indonesian Health Ministry’s director general of communicable disease control, who will outline an initiative on global cooperation for responding to pandemic influenza.

Dr. Daniel Rodriguez of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will speak on the organization’s cooperation mechanism for the joint procurement of vaccines, syringes, and related supplies used by participating member states.

Also, panelists representing leading Asian vaccine makers Butantan, Cadila, Biovac, Vabiotech, and Bharat will discuss ways to expand availability of influenza vaccinations in developing countries with Jan Hendriks of the Netherlands Vaccine Institute moderating the discussion.

In total, there are currently 37 vaccine-making manufacturers and members of the 14 DCVMN member countries.

Indonesian vaccine-making company Bio Farma is the host of this year’s general meeting.

The objective of 13th DCVMN general meeting refers to striving to increase the availability, and to improve the quality, of vaccines produced in developing countries.

Bio Farma President Director Iskandar said last Tuesday that the DCVMN is a strategic alliance of vaccine manufacturers in developing countries. Indonesia is a founding member of the vaccine network, which has membership in 14 countries.

According to Iskandar, since its establishment in Bandung, West Java in 1999, the DCVMN has achieved numerous milestones, particularly in providing high quality and affordable vaccines to populations in developing countries.

Further, the network seeks to promote consistent and sustainable supplies of quality vaccines at affordable prices, and combat infectious diseases, especially those in the developing world, by strengthening the capacity of vaccines and vaccine-related products.

It also encourages research and development efforts to meet the need for vaccines, and fosters production and delivery of high quality vaccines and other health technologies on a long-term basis for national immunization programs.

Iskandar pointed out that Bio Farma is the only vaccine manufacturer in Indonesia that has sought to become a leader in vaccine research as well as a development center, serving as a partner to research new vaccines in developing countries.

Member states of the DCVMN are Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Republic of China, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam.

All the monkeys in this forest consisted of three groups, dwell certain area and use the certain place and certain time.

These monkeys are believed as Gods Guard of Dalem Agung Temple, The Hindu Temple exist in the middle of forest. There are three Holy Temples in this monkey forest and those are existing surround the forest and it is estimated built in the middle of 14 century, in the early governance of Gelgel dynasty. Dalem Agung Temple is located in northwest from the forest represent the existence of most important temples. Beside of two others, that are Permandian Temple, in Westside from this forest and Prajapati Temple which is located in south-east side where the place of Dewa Siwa (Siwa God), one of the Khayangan Temple in Padang Tegal Village.

Jorge Lorenzo champion, Casey Stoner dominates

Jorge Lorenzo secured his second MotoGP world championship with second place behind runaway winner Casey Stoner in the Australian Grand Prix. The title battle was effectively settled on lap two, when Lorenzo’s remaining championship rival Dani Pedrosa crashed out of the lead.

Polesitter Stoner had fallen from first to third off the line, as Lorenzo’s Yamaha burst to the front. Determined to push for a fourth consecutive race win to try and close down Lorenzo’s 23-point advantage, Pedrosa thrust his Honda into the lead at the hairpin on the opening lap.

Lorenzo then lost out to Stoner’s sister Honda on the pits straight.

Given that Stoner had dominated the entire weekend so far, and with Honda not expected to impose team orders, it seemed only a matter of time before Pedrosa relinquished the lead. Pushing

hard to try and stay ahead, Pedrosa then lost his Honda’s front end and crashed after carrying too much speed into the hairpin on the second lap.

He picked his bike up and trundled disconsolately back to the pits. There was no longer any need for Lorenzo to even try and chase Stoner - who was clearly in another league anyway. In his penultimate MotoGP start before retiring, Stoner was able to secure his sixth consecutive home victory by a comfortable margin, as Lorenzo easily took the second place he required.

Emanuel Steward, famed boxing trainer, dies at 68 Associated Press Writer

DETROIT -- Emanuel Steward, earnest yet easygoing, proved rough and tough wasn’t the only way to win in boxing.

With a twinkle in his eyes, a smile on his face and a soothing voice, Steward developed unique bonds in and out of the ring with a long line of champions that included Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Wladimir Klitschko.

Steward, owner of the Kronk Gym in Detroit and an International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer, died Thursday.

He was 68. His executive assistant, Victoria Kirton, said Steward died Thursday at a Chicago hospital. She didn’t disclose the cause of death. ‘’It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend, well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade,’’ Klitschko said Thursday. ‘’I will miss our time together. The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss our friendship.’’

Steward, whose father was a coal miner and mother was a seamstress, was born in West Virginia. He got boxing gloves as a Christmas present at the age

of 8, the start of what would become a long career in the sweet science.

He moved to the Motor City just before becoming a teenager and trained as an amateur boxer at Brewster Recreation Center, which once was the home gym of Joe Louis.

Steward, at the age of 18, won the national Golden Gloves tournament as a bantamweight. Instead of trying to make it as a professional boxer, he went to work for the Detroit Edison Co. and in 1971 accepted a part-time position as head coach - for $35 per week - of the boxing program at the Kronk Recreation Center.

Azarenka seals No. 1 ranking at WTA Championships

ISTANBUL -- Victoria Azarenka wrapped up the seasonending No. 1 position in the world by beating Li Na 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Friday in the WTA Championships.

Azarenka secured a spot in the semifinals and will next play Maria Sharapova. ‘’It’s kind of difficult to believe that a little girl from Belarus is on that list,’’ said Azarenka, from Belarus. ‘’It’s really incredible achievement. When I started to play tennis I had this big picture in my head that I want to be there.

Back then it’s so far away. It’s like pretty much touching the sky. ‘’I’m here sitting kind of in the sky, so it’s really incredible feeling.’’

Agnieszka Radwanska advanced to the semifinals when she edged Sara Errani 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours. The fourth-ranked Radwanska will play Serena Williams on Saturday.

Sharapova swept past Sam Stosur 6-0, 6-3 on the final day of round-robin play but Azarenka’s win means that the Russian will not be able to wrest the No. 1 ranking form her.

Azarenka won the Australian Open in January and had been ranked No. 1 for most of the year, except for a brief period after Sharapova won the French Open.

Sharapova had already qualified for the semifinals of the elite, eight-woman event and has won all three of her round-robin matches.

The Russian rolled through the first set, allowing Stosur only five points. Stosur was an alternate who replaced defending champion Petra Kvitova, who withdrew because of illness. ‘’I certainly didn’t want to play as long a match as I did in the previous round. I wanted to do a better job of a few things and I think I did,’’ said the second-ranked Russian.

ROME - AC Milan’s Stephan El Shaarawy marked his 20th birthday with a second-half goal in a 1-0 win over Genoa in Serie A on Saturday while strugglers Siena and Palermo scrapped out a 0-0 draw. Milan’s victory, which puts them on 10 points from nine games, eases the pressure on manager Massimiliano Allegri despite a poor display that even Brazil forward Alexandre Pato, in his first start for eight months, could not light up.

Despite the win Milan are still languishing in mid-table a massive 12 points behind leaders Juventus, who will bid to extend their 47-game league unbeaten run at Catania on Sunday. Genoa could have taken the lead at the San Siro after a 15 minutes when Cristian Zapata gifted the ball to Luca Antonelli.

He crossed to Ciro Immobile, who was too late to slot home but almost scored anyway after Marco Amelia punched the ball into the striker’s face only to see it rebound wide. LONDON -- Manchester City and Arsenal responded to midweek Champions League setbacks with unconvincing 1-0 wins in the English Premier League on Saturday. and City defender Micah Richards led to them being carried off during the second half.

ROME - AC Milan’s Stephan El Shaarawy marked his 20th birthday with a second-half goal in a 1-0 win over Genoa in Serie A on Saturday while strugglers Siena and Palermo scrapped out a 0-0 draw. Milan’s victory, which puts them on 10 points from nine games, eases the pressure on manager Massimiliano Allegri despite a poor display that even Brazil forward Alexandre Pato, in his first start for eight months, could not light up.

Despite the win Milan are still languishing in mid-table a massive 12 points behind leaders Juventus, who will bid to extend their 47-game league unbeaten run at Catania on Sunday. Genoa could have taken the lead at the San Siro after a 15 minutes when Cristian Zapata gifted the ball to Luca Antonelli.

He crossed to Ciro Immobile, who was too late to slot home but almost scored anyway after Marco Amelia punched the ball into the striker’s face only to see it rebound wide. The closest Milan came to a goal in a dull first half was after 37 minutes when El Shaarawy collected an overhit corner and flashed the ball across the six-yard box, only to see his team mates rooted to the spot and the chance go begging.

Milan started the second half brighter and could have scored almost straight after the restart when Pato’s raid down the right flank ended with another teasing cross flying across Sebastian Frey’s goal and no-one on hand to put it in the net.

Jorge Lorenzo champion, Casey Stoner dominates

Jorge Lorenzo secured his second MotoGP world championship with second place behind runaway winner Casey Stoner in the Australian Grand Prix. The title battle was effectively settled on lap two, when Lorenzo’s remaining championship rival Dani Pedrosa crashed out of the lead.

Polesitter Stoner had fallen from first to third off the line, as Lorenzo’s Yamaha burst to the front. Determined to push for a fourth consecutive race win to try and close down Lorenzo’s 23-point advantage, Pedrosa thrust his Honda into the lead at the hairpin on the opening lap.

Lorenzo then lost out to Stoner’s sister Honda on the pits straight.

Given that Stoner had dominated the entire weekend so far, and with Honda not expected to impose team orders, it seemed only a matter of time before Pedrosa relinquished the lead. Pushing

hard to try and stay ahead, Pedrosa then lost his Honda’s front end and crashed after carrying too much speed into the hairpin on the second lap.

He picked his bike up and trundled disconsolately back to the pits. There was no longer any need for Lorenzo to even try and chase Stoner - who was clearly in another league anyway. In his penultimate MotoGP start before retiring, Stoner was able to secure his sixth consecutive home victory by a comfortable margin, as Lorenzo easily took the second place he required.

Cal Crutchlow made an early break

from the pack behind to secure a lonely third. His Tech 3 Yamaha team-mate Andrea Dovizioso had to fight much harder for fourth, only defeating Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl after a huge race-long dice.

Valentino Rossi led the uncompetitive Ducatis home in seventh. Aleix Espargaro very narrowly beat Aspar team-mate Randy de Puniet to top CRT honours in 10th place.

Emanuel Steward, famed boxing trainer, dies at 68 Associated Press Writer

DETROIT -- Emanuel Steward, earnest yet easygoing, proved rough and tough wasn’t the only way to win in boxing.

With a twinkle in his eyes, a smile on his face and a soothing voice, Steward developed unique bonds in and out of the ring with a long line of champions that included Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Wladimir Klitschko.

Steward, owner of the Kronk Gym in Detroit and an International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer, died Thursday.

He was 68. His executive assistant, Victoria Kirton, said Steward died Thursday at a Chicago hospital. She didn’t disclose the cause of death. ‘’It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend, well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade,’’ Klitschko said Thursday. ‘’I will miss our time together. The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss our friendship.’’

Steward, whose father was a coal miner and mother was a seamstress, was born in West Virginia. He got boxing gloves as a Christmas present at the age

of 8, the start of what would become a long career in the sweet science.

He moved to the Motor City just before becoming a teenager and trained as an amateur boxer at Brewster Recreation Center, which once was the home gym of Joe Louis.

Steward, at the age of 18, won the national Golden Gloves tournament as a bantamweight. Instead of trying to make it as a professional boxer, he went to work for the Detroit Edison Co. and in 1971 accepted a part-time position as head coach - for $35 per week - of the boxing program at the Kronk Recreation Center.

Azarenka seals No. 1 ranking at WTA Championships

ISTANBUL -- Victoria Azarenka wrapped up the seasonending No. 1 position in the world by beating Li Na 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Friday in the WTA Championships.

Azarenka secured a spot in the semifinals and will next play Maria Sharapova. ‘’It’s kind of difficult to believe that a little girl from Belarus is on that list,’’ said Azarenka, from Belarus. ‘’It’s really incredible achievement. When I started to play tennis I had this big picture in my head that I want to be there.

Back then it’s so far away. It’s like pretty much touching the sky. ‘’I’m here sitting kind of in the sky, so it’s really incredible feeling.’’

Agnieszka Radwanska advanced to the semifinals when she edged Sara Errani 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours. The fourth-ranked Radwanska will play Serena Williams on Saturday.

Sharapova swept past Sam Stosur 6-0, 6-3 on the final day of round-robin play but Azarenka’s win means that the Russian will not be able to wrest the No. 1 ranking form her.

Azarenka won the Australian Open in January and had been ranked No. 1 for most of the year, except for a brief period after Sharapova won the French Open.

Sharapova had already qualified for the semifinals of the elite, eight-woman event and has won all three of her round-robin matches.

The Russian rolled through the first set, allowing Stosur only five points. Stosur was an alternate who replaced defending champion Petra Kvitova, who withdrew because of illness. ‘’I certainly didn’t want to play as long a match as I did in the previous round. I wanted to do a better job of a few things and I think I did,’’ said the second-ranked Russian.

PENSACOLA — The big storm threatening the East Coast and a final jobs report before Election Day loomed large as President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney headed into the final full week of campaigning in a race that polls show is extraordinarily close.

Democrats claim math is on the president’s side. Republicans insist Romney’s got the momentum.

Obama is banking on his get-out-the-vote efforts in the most competitive states. He’s also making personal appeals as he encourages Americans to stick with him for a second term.

In pursuit of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, each candidate is starting to make his closing arguments. The goal is to win over the narrow slice of undecided, independent voters, moderates and women in particular, and to persuade supporters to vote on Nov. 6, if not earlier in the many states where voting is already under way. Roughly one-third of the electorate will have voted before Election Day. Presidents are not elected by national popular vote, but in state-bystate contests that allocate electoral votes. Each state gets one electoral vote for each of its representatives in the House and Senate. The winner needs a majority of the 538 electoral votes. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. There are nine contested battleground states — which are not reliably Democratic or Republican — that are too close to call.

BEIJING - Lawyers representing the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao have rejected claims made by the New York Times on Friday that they have accumulated at least $2.7 billion in “hidden riches”, Hong Kong media reported on Sunday.

The New York Times, citing corporate and regulatory records, reported on Friday that Wen’s mother, siblings and children had amassed the majority of their wealth since Wen was named Vice Premier in 1998.

In a statement issued late on Saturday and carried by Hong Kong television as well as the South China Morning Post and Sing Tao Daily newspapers, Bai Tao of the Junhe Law Office and Wang Weidong of the Grandall Law Firm said the wealth “does not exist”.

They also denied that Wen had acted improperly or engaged in business activities himself, and said his relatives had not profited in any way from his tenure as premier and had no influence on

Wen’s “formulation and execution of policies”.

The statement said Wen’s mother had never received any income or property apart from her salary and pension.

Telephone calls made to the law firms by Reuters were not answered.

The Times’ report said the names of family members “have been hidden behind layers of partnerships and investment vehicles involving friends, work colleagues and business partners”.

It said his family’s holdings include a Beijing villa development project, a tire factory in northern China, a company involved in building some of the venues for Beijing’s 2008 Olympics including the “Bird’s Nest” main

stadium, and Ping An Insurance, one of the world’s largest financial services companies.

The New York Times report came at a sensitive time for Beijing, with China about to undergo a once-in-a-decade change of leadership in which Wen will step down as premier.

The newspaper’s websites in English and Chinese were immediately blocked in China, and searches for the New York Times as well as the names of Wen’s children and wife were blocked on China’s main Twitter-like microblog service.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily briefing on Friday that the report “smears China’s name and has ulterior motives”.

The hunt led to the arrest of hundreds of militants. Many were killed in shootouts and the three main perpetrators of the bombings were convicted and executed by firing squad in 2008.

HASMI first surfaced in 2009 as a small “above ground extremist” organization based in West Java and with links to the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), said Todd Elliott, a terrorism analyst at Concord Consulting in Jakarta.

HASMI participated in protests against churches in West Java in 2010 as well as protests against Israel and their overall goal was the establishment of Sharia law in Indonesia, he said.

Until now, HASMI has not been linked to illegal activity. It existed, like the FPI, as a militant pressure group separate from Indonesia’s banned militant organizations, Elliott said.

“They (HASMI) definitely pose a very real threat. We are seeing the next step in a bigger trend of above ground extremist groups crossing over into violence,” he told Reuters.

Members of the FPI had also been implicated in previous attacks, including a suicide attack on a mosque used by police in Cirebon, West Java, in 2011, he said.

The suspected militants could be former members of HASMI, a Salafi group, said Jim Della-Giacomo, Southeast Asia project director at the International Crisis Group think tank.

Salafi Muslims are generally against violence but there are cases in which they turned to violence, Della-Giacomo said.

“The apparent choice of the U.S. embassy as a target shows that the so-called ‘far enemy’ is still a desirable target among Indonesian jihadis ... and not just Indonesian police or the so-called ‘near enemy’ who have been preferred in recent times,” he said.

The group’s name links them to a militant group operating in Kashmir and it is possible that some of its members may have trained with the Kashmiri group, said Damien Kingsbury, a professor at Deakin University in Australia.

HASMI’s members would also likely have at least informal links with other militants in Indonesia and the group’s existence is further evidence of the continuing threat, said Kingsbury, an expert on Indonesia.

Governor Joko Widodo, who is popularly known as Jokowi, said the capital city will organize an annual cultural festival called “Jak Carnival” starting next year.

“Next year, there will be another cultural festival to be called `Jak Carnival`,” Joko Widodo said.

The planned “Jak Carnival” will be organized coinciding with the commemoration of the anniversary of Jakarta, he added.

Jakarta celebrates its anniversary on June 22 every year. This year, the city`s 485th anniversary was celebrated from May 27 to June 24, with 55 cultural and expo activities “We will begin the preparations in January. JAKARTA — An orangutan that was shot with an air rifle has been rescued in the Indonesian part of Borneo, and rescuers are working to remove 104 pellets from her body, a conservationist said Saturday.

The wounded female ape was discovered this month on a palm oil plantation in Central Kalimantan province, according to Tigor Nainggolan, a manager with the British-based Orangutan Foundation.

It’s not known who shot the orangutan, believed to be about 15 years old.

Nainggolan said veterinarians managed to remove 32 of the pellets lodged in her body and head during a three-hour surgery on Oct. 20 at a hospital in the town of Pangkalan Bun, where an X-

ray found 37 bullets in her head and 67 others in the body.

He added that another operation will be performed depending on her condition.

The ape, named Aan, was blinded in her left eye by the pellets.

Indonesia is home to about 90 percent of the orangutans left in the wild, but half its plush rain forest been cleared in the past half-century in the rush to supply the world with timber, pulp, paper and more recently, palm oil.

rules, which include intense scrutiny of planned investments from overseas state-owned firms.

Australia is a member of the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group, and is one of the 11 nations involved in negotiations for a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), both of which aim to liberalise regional trade.

Since the early 1970s, when Australia set up formal diplomatic relations with China, and Japan cemented its role as Australia’s top trading partner, Australia has regularly tried to deepen its Asian ties to cash in on regional economic growth. Since then, China has become Australia’s top trading partner, ahead of Japan, the United States and South Korea.

The policy document targets stronger trade and bilateral links with neighbouring Indonesia, and with a booming India, where Gillard visited earlier this month.

DETROIT — Toyota has widened its global sales lead over General Motors after bouncing back from a series of natural disasters.

The company said Friday it sold 7.4 million vehicles globally in the first nine months of this year — 450,000 more than General Motors.

While Toyota’s sales rose 28 percent in that period, GM’s rose 2.5 percent, to 6.95 million cars and light-duty trucks.

Toyota’s factories were hobbled by an earthquake and tsunami in early 2011, leaving it short of cars in the U.S. and other regions. But now the company has recovered, and is building and selling more vehicles globally. Germany’s Volkswagen AG is also seeing strong global sales.

GM is more concerned with profitable growth than the global sales race, spokesman Jim Cain said.

Toyota has made similar statements, but executives concede privately that the crown is a matter of corporate pride for both companies. GM was

the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008.

But Toyota faces a challenge in keeping its lead this year. Sales are falling in China because of a territorial dispute with Japan. Japan nationalized islands in the East China Sea that are also claimed by China and Taiwan. The move set off violent protests in China and a widespread call to boycott Japanese goods.

Toyota, which makes the Prius hybrid, Camry sedan and Lexus luxury models, had planned to sell 1 million vehicles in China this year.

But the company no longer expects to reach that number. It has not given a new target.

In September, Toyota’s vehicle sales in China dropped to 44,100 vehicles, from 86,000 a year earlier. In August, Toyota sold 75,280 vehicles in China, down 15 percent from the same month last year.

Even if Toyota’s China sales fall short of 1 million, Nomura Securities Co. auto analyst Masataka Kunugimoto expects them to gradually recover to 900,000 vehicles for the year.

“We don’t expect this kind of drop to continue,” he said. “The Chinese market is still growing.”

Still, he sees GM and other nonJapanese manufacturers getting a sales boost as Chinese buyers avoid Japanese products.

Last year, Toyota’s production was hit by the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan last year and then by flooding in Thailand. Its sales were also dented by massive U.S. safety recalls. That combination of problems dropped Toyota to No. 3 in global sales after GM and Volkswagen.

VW is closing in on GM after notching big sales gains in the U.S. this year. The maker of the Passat and Jetta cars sold 6.7 million light vehicles from January through September, up 9.7 percent from a year earlier. But VW’s challenge could fall short this year because Europe’s weak economy has hurt sales in that region.

GM also has problems on its home turf. Sales growth in the U.S. — its biggest market — is lagging. Sales are up 3.4 percent through September, far behind the 15-percent growth for the industry as a whole.

In addition, amidst the completely difficult condition farmers were unable to preserve the survival of their family. Their agricultural products could no longer suffice their needs properly. Not to mention, the land tax remained to hold them amidst the desire to maintain the land owned by their parents.

In this case, it was required a political will of the government to protect the existence of such farmlands. Unfortunately, the existing regulations

had always been late and sometimes it did not exist. “Amidst the excessive condition, we can only give an understanding as the saying goes that when in Rome, do as the Romans do,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Headman of Batubulan Kangin (Batuyang), Wayan Swarjaya, said it was impossible for him to prohibit people from selling their land. Such conditions had occurred since the 1990s, while the housing development occurred around the early 2000s. Admittedly, the current population of the territory had reached 1,500 people.

Swarjaya judged that to address the issue was required a concerted effort from top to bottom. Political will of the government, especially in protecting the agriculture, was highly needed to minimize the rate of fast-growing land conversion.

Existence of Batubulan and Batubulan Kangin village was very strategic geographically. The atmosphere was not so noisy, close to Denpasar and some areas in East Bali. It had made the area their choice to live. So far, the growing settlement was dominated by people from Karangasem, Klungkung, Bangli, Gianyar and Buleleng. (kmb16)

BANDUNG - At least 106 researchers and experts will attend the 13th annual general Meeting of Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network (DCVMN) in Bali, slated for October 31-November 2, 2012.

“We’ve already received confirmation from 106 participants that they will attend the event in Bali next week,” Rahman Roestan, corporate secretary of Indonesian vaccinemaker Bio Farma, told newsmen here on Saturday.

Roestand said in addition to participants representing the 14 DCVMN member countries, the meeting will also feature presentations and discussions from vaccine experts and government officials from the United States, Europe.

Bio Farma President Director Iskandar said last Tuesday that the DCVMN is a strategic alliance of vaccine manufacturers in developing countries. Indonesia is a founding member of the vaccine network, which has membership in 14 countries.

According to Iskandar, since its establishment in Bandung, West Java in 1999, the DCVMN has achieved numerous milestones, particularly in providing high quality and affordable vaccines to populations in developing countries.

Further, the network seeks to promote consistent and sustainable supplies of quality vaccines at affordable prices, and combat infectious diseases, especially those in the developing world, by strengthening the capacity of vaccines and vaccine-related products.

It also encourages research and development efforts to meet the need for vaccines, and fosters production and delivery of high quality vaccines and other health technologies on a long-term basis for national immunization programs.

Iskandar pointed out that Bio Farma is the only vaccine manufacturer in Indonesia that has sought to become a leader in vaccine research as well as a development center, serving as a partner to research new vaccines in developing countries.

Granny Luh Windia, 80, on Friday (Oct 26) seemed to gaze at her house located at Kedampal hamlet, Datah village, Abang, Karangasem. The simple stonewalled house of the old widow suddenly collapsed last week whereas she said it did not rain or no tremor occurred.

Windia suspected her house wall along five meter in the rear collapsed because the walls of the stone house only applying clay as the adhesive had been old. She estimated the wall of the house was built 30 years ago.

Windia said her party had reported the incident on the collapse of her house wall to local headman and was resumed to subdistrict head. She hoped there would be an aid from the government that could help relieve her burden. However, so far there had been no signs indicating the

government’s attention.

For security and avoiding sunburn and coldness at night after the collapse of the wall, Windia was helped by her son cover up the hole in the back wall with an old tarp. “It just avoids her from being cold at night,” said one of the residents who lived in the eastern foothills of Mount Agung regularly hit by forest fire every dry season.

On the other hand, the hamlet chief of Kedampal, I Wayan Bakti, said that granny Windia should be helped for the disaster afflicting her. She was fairly lucky as some cubic meters of the wall stones did not collapse into the room.

Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

“We’re looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people,” said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy barrelled north from the Caribbean — where it left nearly five dozen dead — to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn’t matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

“This is not a coastal threat alone,” said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “This is a very large area.”

President Barack Obama was

monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday as hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland and the state was set to close its casinos. New York’s governor was considering shutting down the subways to avoid flooding and half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds. It was about 275 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving north-

east at 14 mph as of 2 a.m. Sunday.

Forecasters said the storm was spreading tropical storm conditions across the coastline of North Carolina, and they were expected to move up the mid-Atlantic coastline late Sunday. Experts said the storm was most likely to hit the southern New Jersey coastline by late Monday or early Tuesday.

Governors from North Carolina, where heavy rain was expected Sunday, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

ANCHORAGE — Emergency sirens sounded around Hawaii late Saturday warning about an oncoming tsunami, after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Canada.

Even as emergency officials urged people along Hawaii’s coasts to move to higher ground, officials in North America downgraded a tsunami warning to an advisory for southern Alaska and British Columbia. They also issued an advisory for areas of northern California and southern Oregon.

A small tsunami created by the magnitude 7.7 quake was barely noticeable in Craig, Alaska, where the first wave or surge was recorded Saturday night.

The wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches, much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit in the Queen Charlotte Islands area, followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock several minutes later. The quake was felt in Craig and other southeast Alaska communities, but Zidek said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coastal areas of southeast Alaska, down the western Canadian coast to the tip of Vancouver Island.

Later Saturday evening, the warning for those areas was downgraded to an advisory, while a warning was issued for Hawaii.

Officials said a tsunami wave could hit the islands by 10:30 p.m.

Saturday (1:30 a.m. PDT).

Local television stations in Hawaii were running live news updates and warning tourists to check with hotels. At first, officials said the islands weren’t in any danger of a tsunami, but they later issued a warning, saying there had been a change in sea readings.

In addition, officials issued an advisory for areas from Gualala Point, Calif., about 80 miles northwest of San Francisco, to the Douglas-Lane county line in Oregon, about 10 miles southwest of Florence.

A tsunami warning means an area is likely to be hit by a wave, while an advisory means there may be strong currents, but that widespread inundation is not expected to occur. The U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska said it was warning warn everyone with a boat on the water to prepare for a potential tsunami.

The first wave hit Craig about two hours after the earthquake.

“It started off where it might be a 3-foot wave, and it kept getting downgraded,” Craig Mayor Dennis Watson said. “And the last time we heard, it was less than 1 foot.”

It actually was recorded at 4 inches. Watson said he was downtown on the waterfront, and had his car lights shining on pylons.

“I didn’t even see the surge. I watched the pylons. And the tides came in about four or five inches.

The surge would leave a wet spot as it would go back out, and we never did see that,” he said.

There could be subsequent waves in Craig, but an official with the tsunami warning center didn’t think it would amount to much.

The first wave “typically is not the largest but nevertheless we don’t expect the maximum wave height to be large,” said Bill Knight.

Cocaine, Marijuana in Italian Cities’ Air

Researchers at Italy’s Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research have published the results of a year-long study that monitored psychotropic substances in the air of eight Italian cities: Bologna, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome, Turin and Verona.

The scientists found trace quantities of marijuana and cocaine in the air of all eight cities, with the highest total drug concentrations in Turin and the lowest in Palermo. Other substances monitored included nicotine and caffeine, which were also detected in all of the cities.

But the miniscule concentrations detected — about .26 nanograms of cocaine per meter cubed in Turin, where levels of that drug were highest — are not nearly enough to alter the mind states of Italy’s city dwellers.

A typical grain of salt weighs about 80,000 nanograms.

Biofeedback Video Game Helps Kids Control Anger If you can’t help children with anger problems through psychotherapy alone, try a video game. But not just any video game: RAGE Control, developed at Boston Children’s Hospital, uses biofeedback to encourage kids to control their emotions, and researchers report positive results.

In the “Space Invaders”-like game, kids shoot at enemy spaceships and leave friendly ones alone. During the study, children wore a monitor that tracked their heart rate and displayed it on screen. If their heart rate went above a certain level, they could no longer fire on the enemy ships.

Peter Ducharme, the study’s lead researcher, says that while shooting games are sometimes associated with problems such as increased aggression in youths, they chose to create this kind of game because the kids got more involved in them.

“These are games that are familiar and enjoyable to kids, and teaches kids how to stay in emotional control and avoid reacting impulsively, which is why we believe we see a reduction in anger,” Ducharme said in an email to TechNewsDaily.

Anger issues are one of the more common mental health disorders among teenagers. According to research from Harvard Medical School published in July 2012, nearly 8 percent of teens display regular violent outbursts.

In a study of two groups of youths ages 9 to 17, the group that played the game after receiving standard therapy for anger showed significant improvement at keeping their heart rate down compared to the group that received standard treatment alone.

The children who played games decreased anger scores in the intensity of anger at a particular time, the frequency of angry feelings over time and the expression of anger toward others or objects (such as swearing at or insulting people, or punching walls or breaking belongings).

DENPASAR - Mangrove forest plays a major role as a shield of Bali from tsunami threat.

However, many mangrove forests in Bali are damaged, cleared and its ecosystem is disturbed.

The damage is feared to be getting more severe following the issuance of permit by Governor of Bali related to the management of mangrove forest by investor at an area of 102.22 hectares for 55 years built with a number of tourism facilities such as restaurants and spas. If the damage to mangrove forest persists, the South Bali is predicted to sink.

According to a spatial planning observer from the Udayana University, Dr. Putu Rumawan Salain, amidst the growing impact of the global warming, the environmentalists worried and predicted that within the period of 60-90 years the Ngurah Rai Airport would be separated from mainland Bali because the surrounding area would be submerged in water. Moreover, if the destruction of mangrove forest and its acreage continued to reduce so the threat of South Bali to sink would be getting faster.

“If destruction of mangrove forest is getting more severe amidst the global warming, the experts estimate and predict that Southern Jimbaran will be submerged more quickly and it can sink within 60 years,” he said. As evidence, Rumawan added that before the widespread conversion of mangrove forest, the mangrove water frequently came up in the area around the airport.

Meanwhile, the Law No. 26/2007 on spatial planning mandated that each provincial capital ideally had green open space coming to 30 percent of the total area where 20 percent of it was public space

and 10 percent of private space.

At the moment, the city of Denpasar still indeed complied with the provisions of the Law. The use of 102 hectares of mangrove forest would reduce the green open space of Denpasar. In the future, it would probably continue to decrease if the government itself did not want to preserve it and casually gave permission to investors. “Denpasar is very poor with green open space.

If the permit for the management of mangrove forest continues, it will surely reduce the green open space of the city. Moreover, the period of contract given to investor is long enough reaching 55 years,” he said.

He added that continuation of the permit would also become an example for investors to apply for similar permit to manage the Grand Forest Park (Tahura) and fill with tourism facilities. If the government continued to issue the permit, it was feared the mangrove forest would be crowded with tourism accommodations. “If it really happens, Bali will be getting more crowded and the carrying capacity of Bali is exceeded so the threat of Bali to sink will be getting faster,” he said. DENPASAR - Training ship of the Sudarshini Indian Navy Ship (INS) anchored in Benoa Harbor, Denpasar, around 09:00 a.m. on Saturday (Oct 27). The ship with a length of 54 meters and equipped with 20 sails marked the 20-year relationship between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The training ship with 73 crews consisted of 32 sailors, 34 cadets and seven officers would cover a distance of 12,217 miles with the voyage plan of around 6 months and will anchor back in India in the upcoming March 2013.

Captain of the INS Sudarshini, Shyam Sundar, said that during the voyage in Indonesia, the INS Sudarshini had a layover in Padang, West Sumatra and Bali.

The ship would anchor back in Manado on November 10-13.

“It sailed the traditional route that had ever been covered by Indian traders about 5,000 years ago in the trading activities with the ASEAN region, including the dissemination of culture and religion,” he said.

As part of the voyage for the training ship, the National Navy of Indonesia had placed two officers from Padang to Bali to increase the knowledge of the naval officers of both countries. Later, the training ship would be open to the public on Sunday (Oct 28) until Monday (Oct 29) and also be visited by students from several schools in Bali.

The effort of Denpasar Police Criminal Research under Ambariyadi Wijaya to solve motorcycle robbery that happened at Legian Street behind Gang VVIP, Kuta is successful.

After just one day, police found two accused who are pupils initialed YV (15) from a Denpasar Junior High School and DI (14) from Kerobokan Junior High. The two were captured when they about to sell the motorcycles in a secondhand market at Gunung Agung Street, Denpasar last Friday (26/10). “The motorcycle they took was Yamaha Jupiter MX owned by Kadek Surya Negara (19). Is this the only time they do this, the case is still being developed,” Ambariyadi stated.

Meanwhile a police source stated both accused were around Kuta on Thursday (25/10) evening around 1 am and saw the motorcycle and its keys are still on it. YV then took the motorcycle.

After they took it, they escaped with it and brought it to Batanta Street, Denpasar which then the motorcycle parts were taken off to avoid any trace such as its plate number and the bike then hidden at a cemetery on the same street.

The victim reported it to the police which then police took action including supervising the secondhand market which then the two were seen then captured after one officer pretended being a customer. The two were found selling it with no documents which then later brought to the headquarters. “Police also found the thrown out original number plate,” the police source concluded. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Billy Idol plays fan’s birthday party in Seattle Associated Press Writer

SEATTLE — A Seattle man says that having Billy Idol play his 26th birthday party made for the greatest night of his life. Michael Henrichsen spent two years persuading the British rock icon to play his party, and it paid off Friday at the packed Showbox SoDo club.

Idol guitarist Steve Stevens played him ‘Happy Birthday’ in the middle of a solo. Then Idol called Henrichsen onto the stage for a rendition of the song. Henrichsen’s ‘80s cover band opened for the show.

Idol says Henrichsen’s effort stood out from other fan requests because his campaign involved four “Billy Idol Aid” charity concerts that raised $13,000 for the Northwest Harvest food bank and the American Red Cross. Idol says playing Henrichsen’s party in Seattle might help fans see another side of him.
