Elmo actor Kevin Clash resigns amid sex allegation Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned from “Sesame Street” on Tuesday amid allegations he sexually abused underage boys, bringing an end to a 28-year career in which he turned the furry red monster into one of the most beloved — and lucrative — characters on TV and in toy stores.

“Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work ‘Sesame Street’ is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer,” the 52-year-old performer said in a statement. “I am deeply sorry to be leaving and am looking forward to resolving these personal matters privately.”

His departure came as a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued Clash for more than $5 million Tuesday, accusing the actor of engaging in sexual behavior with him when he was 15. Singleton charged that Clash made a habit of trolling

gay chat lines for underage boys and meeting them for sex.

It was the second such allegation in just over a week. On Nov. 12, a man in his 20s said he had sex with Clash at age 16. A day later, though, the young man recanted, saying their relationship was adult and consensual.

Clash was a young puppeteer at “Sesame Street” in the mid-1980s when he was assigned a little-used puppet now known as Elmo and turned him into a star, creating his high-pitched voice and child-like personality. Clash also served as the show’s senior Muppet coordinator and Muppet captain, winning 23 daytime Emmy awards and one prime-time Emmy.

In a statement, Sesame Workshop said that “the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want,” and that Clash had concluded “he can no longer be effective in his job.” “This is a sad day for Sesame

Street,” the company said.

Clash did not address the new allegations. He said previously that he had an adult and consensual relationship with the first accuser. The divorced father of a grown daughter, he acknowledged that he is gay.

At a news conference Tuesday, Singleton said he and Clash met on a gay chat line when he was 15, and for a two-week period, they had sexual contact but not intercourse. He said he didn’t know what Clash did for a living until he was 19 and Googled the man’s name.

“I was shocked when I found out what he did for a living,” said Singleton, a student in criminal psychology who lives in New York but would not say where he goes to school. He said he didn’t consider speaking up until he heard about last week’s accusation. “I thought I was a unique circumstance,” Singleton said. “I did not know that it was something he had done habitually.”

NEW YORK — One Direction’s “Take Me Home” is the taking the boys to the top of the charts — and to new heights. The group’s sophomore album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s the year’s third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift’s “Red,” which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons’ “Babel,” which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week.

“We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us,” band member Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Tuesday from London. “We can send tweets and thank them, but 140 characters is never going be enough to say how much it means.”

The album also debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom this week and is No. 1 in more than 30 countries, Columbia Records said Wednesday. The fivesome’s debut, “Up All Night,” came in at No. 2 in the United Kingdom last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit No. 1 and has achieved platinum status. “ W e were a little

bit nervous about how people were going to take it,” 19-year-old Niall Horan said of the new album during tour rehearsals. “Everyone gets that second album syndrome.”

They say though they’re excited, they won’t be celebrating too much: “We’re finishing rehearsing soon and

we’re going home to bed.”

One Direction, who placed third on the U.K. version of “The X Factor” in 2010, is signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco label imprint. In just a year, the band has become worldwide sensations, thanks to its feverish fans. They released a book and have a 3D movie planned.

They also made the cut for Barbara Walters’ most fascinating people of 2012 list, which includes New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. g o l d medalist Gabby Douglas. One Direction says those experiences have helped the group mature.

Bali Post DENPASAR - The Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali feels to get rivaled by the practice of online reservation system applied by the unlicensed travel agency. The existence of agency offering the accommodation packages and the sales of airline ticket through online system reduces the business share of travel agencies (BPW) in Bali.

“Aside from reducing the tourist market share, existence of the online agency does not give any benefits that can be enjoyed by people on the island,” said the Secretary General of ASITA Bali, Eddy Putra.

Eddy said the agencies did not have an office or base in this country. Most of the agencies admitted if they were only a branch so that their

headquarters was overseas whereas the business in virtual world should be a legal entity and based in the country. It was intended in order the money circulating in tourism sector could be enjoyed by people and not by the business and capital owners living overseas.

“The loss we feel due to the presence of those travel agencies certainly reduces the tourism mar-

ket. However, there has been no calculation regarding the loss and we have no research regarding their number,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tommy Sutrisno, another official of the ASITA said his party estimated there were many online agencies having no permit in running their operations. Moreover, their existence was difficult to be proved because they were not based in Bali.

“By all means, their presence has shifted the market because they are clearly making many room reservations to a number of accommodation facilities in the region,” he said.

The owner of AWI Tour, Nyoman Kandia, also stated that so far the

services offered by licensed travel agencies in Bali included the airline ticket, accommodation packages, tour package, meals and other services.

However, with the sale of package through online services, travelers could book rooms directly to hotel management without going through intermediaries like travel agencies.

“The increasing offer through online services is also made by the airline management. Even, such phenomenon has come to view since 2003. Travelers only need to book ticket through online system of the airline company without going through the intermediaries of travel agencies. Therefore, the sales of airline ticket and accommodation package of travel agencies

diminish,” he explained.

In the future, the activities of travel agencies, estimated Kandia, would only be focused on the sales of tour package. Such condition could also encourage the competition among the travel agencies.

“Inevitably, travel agencies are required to sell special tour package becoming a featured product,” he said.

In response to such condition, Deputy Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, affirmed that online service was the unavoidable way of managing business at this time. On that account, licensed travel agencies should have a similar business that could offer exciting and varied packages. (kmb27)

As a result, many Balinese people take resettlement program and earn a living overseas. by people from outside. Even, some of them take resettlement program because they are unable to compete. Meanwhile, the share of human resources development in Bali remains small because people more focus on ritual,” he said.

According to Gde Made Sadguna, such condition was hazardous for Balinese people amidst the growth era of the economic services. “It is a challenge for the government and Balinese people.

We do not omit the ritual, but reduce it and give more emphases to human resources improvement to deal with the service of the economic era,” he said.

The Head of the Indonesian Worker Placement and Protection (BP3TKI) of Denpasar, Wayan Pageh, said the public interest in Bali to work overseas was very high. He said the job seekers registered in the Bali Manpower and Resettlement Agency in 2011 reached 46,638 people. Starting January to November 2011, the BP3TKI was able to place as many as 14,078 workers of Bali overseas. Meanwhile, up to October 2012, the BP3TKI sent 10,487 workers of Bali overseas to work in cruise

ships, spa outlets and hotel industry.

According to him, the high interest of Balinese people to work overseas was inseparable from their high aristocratic mindset. Most Balinese people were less willing to pursue informal sector because they were more interested in formal sector so that the informal sector was then taken over by migrants from outside Bali. “The formal sector is uncertainly better than formal sector. Necessarily, the informal sector such as selling rice and meat balls should be worked on where so far this sector is widely handled by migrants from outside Bali,” said the man from Sidan village, Gianyar.

On the other hand, he added, the role of local government to work on the informal sector was still minimal. The informal sector in Bali remained traditional and lacked of touches. “The government should encourage and gives space to Balinese people to work on the informal sector,” he said. Besides, the government should continue to stimulate the creation of young entrepreneurs so they could create job opportunities

independently. There should be training and development programs to young entrepreneurs so that they could be independent, disbursement of sustainable capital and provision of business location.

According to the former head of human resources in the Manpower Agency, Bali government had not owned a clear, focused and comprehensive workforce planning both in terms of macro and micro aspect.

Labor condition in Bali was still considered to be poorly organized.

Many local job markets were seized

by foreigners so that local residents were excluded. Based on the data of Bali Manpower and Resettlement Agency, a total of 1,455 foreign workers were recorded to seize the ‘pie’ of job opportunities in the formal sector, chiefly in the tourism sector, in 2011.

“There must be a real intervention of the provincial and regency/municipal government in designing the protection for local workers and restrict the annexation of job opportunities by foreign workers if the sector can actually be filled in by local workers,” he said. (kmb29/kmb27)

Deputy Chief Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Gde Made Sadguna, stated the regional migrants played important role in filling in the job opportunities in Bali because the government was unable to undertake the economic transformation from the agriculture to (tourism) service sector.

“Transforming the agriculture to service sector is a tremendous change. So far, this effort has been less optimally carried out by the government so the existing job opportunities are filled in by outsiders having the ability in the sector,” said Gde Made Sadguna in Denpasar, Tuesday (Nov 20).

According to him, the economic change would bring in the demands of transformation programs. Meanwhile, human resources with special competencies were less produced in Bali. Evidently, there were many universities in Bali, but only a few that could produce the output having the skills pursuant to the demand of the economic change.

Like the Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo, being familiar with residents, the Regent Eka was seen to join the road casting activity. By using a bucket, the regent joined with local housewives to carry the concrete mixture. “We highly need the participation of residents to

improve the infrastructure,” she said. She also hoped such an action could be imitated by residents of the other villages.

The regent was proud of the housewives who were desperate to struggle for casting the road.

According to her, the action would give extensive benefits to residents. “As woman, we must be able to show off our emancipation and play a role in the development,” she concluded. (kmb30)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dark matter detector nearing activation in SD mine Associated Press Writer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Scientists hoping to detect dark matter deep in a former South Dakota gold mine have taken the last major step before flipping the switch on their delicate experiment and say they may be ready to begin collecting data as early as February.

What’s regarded as the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector was lowered earlier this month into a 70,000-gallon water tank nearly a mile beneath the earth’s surface, shrouding it in enough insulation to hopefully isolate dark matter from the cosmic radiation that makes it impossible to detect above ground.

And if all goes as planned, the data that begins flowing could answer ageold questions about the universe and its origins, scientists said Monday.

“We might well uncover something fantastic,” said Harry Nelson, a professor of physics at University of California, Santa Barbara and a principal investigator on the Large Underground Xenon experiment.

“One thing about our field is that it’s kind of brutal in that we know it’s expensive and we work hard to only do experiments that are really important.”

This one hasn’t been cheap, at about $10 million, but like the discovery of the Higgs boson — dubbed the “God particle” by some — earlier this year in Switzerland, the detection of

dark matter would be a seismic occurrence in the scientific community.

Scientists know dark matter exists by its gravitational pull but, unlike regular matter and antimatter, it’s so far been undetectable. Regular matter accounts for about 4 percent of the universe’s mass, and dark matter makes up about 25 percent. The rest is dark energy, which is also a mystery.

The search in South Dakota began in 2003 after the Homestake Gold Mine in the Black Hills’ Lead, S.D., shuttered for good. Scientists called dibs on the site, and in July, after years of fundraising and planning, the LUX detector moved into the Sanford Underground Research Facility, 4,850 feet below the earth’s surface. It took two days to ease the phone booth-sized detector down the once-filthy shaft and walkways that originally opened for mining in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush.

For example, if someone wore the tiny device and had an MP3 player connected via Bluetooth, they could control playback by touching their arm or grasping their wrist. In another example, a connected sofa could turn on a TV when someone sits down.

At a recent New York Tech Meetup, Poupyrev showed how Touché could connect to an orchid, making the flower’s stem touch-sensitive. Poupyrev was able to “play” the orchid as he slid his hand along the stem, creating different sounds.

But there’s a catch. We tried it using a public-domain photo of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, but whether we used a URL link or a direct upload, the Naughty America site told us that “high domain volume” prevented the feature from working immediately.

Instead, the site wanted our email address in order to send us the matches. We don’t want porn emails coming to us at work, so we stopped right there.

Made Sadguna pointed out that other than pursuing the quality of economic growth, the Bali government should also make a positive policy having an impact on the community.

One of them was the development of spiritual tourism that directed to counteract the negative effects caused by tourism.

“If it can really work, it will increase the people’s income and the economic growth, generate low inflation and wide job opportunities as well as equalize the economic growth,” he said.

However, they deplored because such potential had not been worked on maximally, whereas it had a lot of potential to further develop. Aside from the bay atmosphere, there also lay an ancient human museum located just a few steps away. Unfortunately, it lacked of facilities.

The Head of Education, Culture and Tourism Agency of Jembrana, Gede Yasa Arimbawa, said that pursuant to the Bylaw of Bali No.16/2009 the area belonged to special tourist destination. But, this year there had been no development allocated for tourist destination like the Gilimanuk Bay. This year, the regency government would focus the arrangement on Gilimanuk as the entrance to Bali. There was possibility for the development, but was still waiting for the study made by the Regional Development Planning Board.

Indeed, the Gilimanuk Bay has a potential to become a tourist destination with the beautiful view of nature and existence of the archaeological museum near the bay. Currently, the management is carried out by community group of Gilimanuk under supervision of the government. (kmb26)

Clinton meets Netanyahu to seek Gaza truce Reuters

Besides, the team also found hundreds of bottles of herbs banned

by the Bali Drug and Food Control (BBPOM). The store owner, Wayan Mahendra, admitted not to know if the herbs on sale were banned from distribution and contained hazardous substance. But, he claimed if the herbs were frequently purchased by many residents. According to them, the herbs had a healthy and refreshing efficacy for the body.

“A lot of customers search it and I have just sold it for two months,” he explained. The officers also found herbal products in other stores like in the Icang Store at Tegal Badeng

Timur village.

In the store owned by Ali Nuri, the officers found 25 boxes containing around 300 bottles of herbs of 1 liter package as well as 186 bottles of smaller package. It was also known if circulation of the bottled herbs was also banned by the BBPOM as containing hazardous substance.

However, the officers only reprimand the store owner to no longer sell them and could not confiscate the herbs and cosmetics.

Yemeni plane crashes near Sanaa airport, killing 10

SANAA - A Yemeni military transport plane crashed near Sanaa airport on Wednesday, killing all ten people onboard, an airport official said.

The plane came down in an abandoned produce market in the Hasaba district near the Yemeni capital after experiencing a technical error, the official said.

“The plane tried to land in an empty space in Hasaba, but because

of a technical problem it crashed and ten of the crew died,” the official said, saying the pilot was one of the ten people killed. Ambulances raced to the scene where crowds gathered.

Witnesses said that the Antonov plane was completely burnt out and that thick black smoke surrounded the area. In October last year, a Yemeni military plane crash-landed at an air base in the south of the country killing nine passengers, including eight Syrian engineers.

Eurozone fails to reach deal on Greece aid Associated Press

BRUSSELS — European Union officials failed Wednesday to reach a deal on giving Greece more aid, prolonging uncertainty over the future of the debt-hobbled country and the 17-member eurozone.

There has been disagreement among the ministers and the IMF on how to make Athens’ debt manageable. The eurozone ministers are in favor of giving Greece an extra two years, to 2022, to bring its debt down to 120 percent of gross domestic product from the 176 percent forecast for this year. The IMF has resisted such an extension.

Agreement on this issue is needed for the group of creditors to pay Greece the next batch of its rescue loans, expected to amount to €44.6 billion ($57 billion). Greece the needs the money to avoid bankruptcy.

Greece has been relying since 2010 on international bailout loans, under terms supervised by the so-called troika — the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, which is the 27-country European Union’s executive branch. Two weeks ago, Greece’s coalition government narrowly succeeded in passing a €13.5 billion package of budget cuts, tax increases and reforms in order to secure the latest loan payment.

The question of debt sustainability is as important as it is divisive: If Greece’s debts can’t be reduced to a level where the country can afford to pay them, the billions of euros in bailout loans given to Greece will have been wasted.

One of the reasons Greece is not expected to reduce its debt to 120 percent of GDP by 2020 is that its austerity program of spending cuts and tax hikes is hurting the economy, which faces a sixth year of recession in 2013.

To ease the impact on the economy, Greece’s fellow eurozone countries agreed last week to grant Athens an extra two years until 2016 to implement its program of austerity reforms and budget deficit cuts. But this extension will also cost more money — another €32 billion through 2016, according to the troika — since the debt will have to be financed over a longer period.

Many eurozone countries are opposed to putting more money into Greece’s aid program.

CHICAGO — Feeling the pinch of the sluggish economic recovery, many Americans setting out on the nation’s annual Thanksgiving migration had to sacrifice summer vacations, rely on relatives for airfare or scour the Web for travel deals to ensure they made it home.

It’s not just tight family finances making travel tough. Airlines struggling to save on jet fuel and other expenses have cut the number of flights, leading to a jump in airfares. Those hitting the roads face high gas prices and rising tolls. Now, with talk of the nation sliding off a “fiscal cliff” come January, many travelers said they’re accepting that sacrifices for pricy holiday journeys have become the norm.

“You become immune to it, I guess,” said Chris Zukowski, a 43-year-old locomotive engineer from the Chicago suburb of Huntley, as he hugged his wife and three children goodbye at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and lamented he could not afford to join them on the holiday trip to New Jersey.

“You have to cut back on things just to make sure that you can afford to do stuff like this, so they can go visit grandma,” he said, referring to his son and two daughters.

If the nation’s travel patterns are any kind of barometer for the state of the economy, the travel forecast for Thanksgiving week suggested a slight upward nudge as people and businesses recover slowly from the 2007-09 recession in which Americans lost nearly a quarter of their wealth.

Around 43.6 million Americans were expected to journey 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, just a 0.7 percent increase from last year, according to AAA’s yearly Thanksgiving travel analysis. After a couple years of healthy post-recession growth, this year’s numbers suggested it will take a stronger economy to lift travel demand significantly, the travel organization said.

More people are driving, fewer are flying and the average distance traveled was expected to be nearly 17 percent — or about 120 miles — shorter than a year ago, it said.

Some families are even agreeing to bump Thanksgiving dinner to Saturday, for example, allowing those traveling long distances to get cheaper, off-peak fares and avoid crowds, said Joseph Schwieterman, a transportation researcher at DePaul University.

Aided by smartphone apps, social media and other technology, consumers are getting better at sniffing out deals and are realizing they need to be flexible with dates and even with which airports they chose when booking, said Courtney Scott, a senior editor at Travelocity.

“I think people are really becoming smarter, more creative travelers and shoppers,” Scott said.

For some travelers, the coping mechanism was decidedly less sophisticated: Travel now, worry about the costs later.

“I think it’s my personal style to say, ‘It’s the holidays. Who cares?’And deal with the consequences later,” said Olivia Melman, who flew from Chicago to Philadelphia on Tuesday. The 22-yearold, who works in human relations at Citigroup in New York City, said the costs would set her back, but family is a priority.

Having skipped their Thanksgiving trip last year, Nishiya Sivaruban and her husband were able to save enough to take their two children to the Hawaiian island of Kauai on a special holiday journey. They saved about $200 each on airfare by flying out of O’Hare instead of Milwaukee, which is closer to their home in Waukesha, Wis. She and her husband are originally from Sri Lanka and have family links to the founder of a Hindu temple and monastery on Kauai that they were excited about visiting.

Australians find drugs worth $246M in steamroller Associated Press Writer

SYDNEY — Australian police say they have seized 237 million Australian dollars ($246 million) worth of cocaine and methamphetamine found inside a steamroller shipped from China.

Australian Federal Police said Wednesday that they arrested a Canadian man and a U.S. man in Sydney after finding 350 kilograms (770 pounds) of cocaine and meth. The men were charged with importing drugs and face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

It was the police agency’s second major drug bust in a week. On Friday, police said officials had tracked down a boat carrying 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of cocaine to Australia after it ran aground in the small island nation of Tonga. A corpse was found on board.

Officials are trying to determine the cause of death.

MUMBAI, India — India executed the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 terror attack on Mumbai early Wednesday, the country’s home ministry said.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani citizen, was one of 10 gunmen who rampaged through the streets of India’s financial capital for three days in November 2008, killing 166 people.

Kasab was hung in secrecy at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at a jail in Pune, a city near Mumbai, after Indian President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his plea for mercy.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the home ministry sent Kasab’s mercy plea to Mukherjee on October 16.

Mukherjee rejected it on November 5, he said.

“It was decided then that on 21st November at 7:30 in the morning he would be hanged.

That procedure has been completed today,” Shinde said.

R.R. Patil, the home minister for the state of Maharashtra, where Mumbai is located, called the execution a tribute to “all innocent people and police officers who lost their lives in this heinous attack on our nation.”

Indian authorities faced public pressure to quickly execute K as ab, and the gov er nment fast-tracked the appeal and execution process, which often can take years, or in some cases, decades.

India blames Laskhar e-Taiba, a militant Pakistani organization, for orchestrating the attacks.

The incident inflamed relations between the nuclear armed neighbors.

An Indian judge sentenced Kasab to death in May 2010 for waging war against India, murder and terrorism, among other charges. Kasab cried that day as he heard the sentence.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A New Zealand volcano erupted with a brief blast of dark ash Wednesday, canceling flights but causing no significant damage. Schoolchildren and dozens of other hikers who were walking on trails along the mountain’s base were safe.

The eruption of Mount Tongariro, its second in less than four months, sent a dark ash plume about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) into the sky. Authorities issued a no-fly alert above the mountain located in the sparsely populated area of central North Island.

National carrier Air New Zealand advised travelers that some of its flights could be delayed or canceled because of the eruption. Airline spokeswoman Brigitte Ransom said two flights had been canceled by midafternoon.

The New Zealand Herald reported that about 100 middle-school students and teachers were safe after they were hiking on the Tongariro Track at the base of the volcano when it erupted. Dozens more adults hiking in the region were also uninjured.

Tongariro National Park has three active volcanoes, is a popular tourist destination and was the backdrop for many scenes in “The Lord of the Rings” movies.

Civil defense authorities were advising people in the region to remain indoors and shut their windows to avoid the ash, which could pose a health hazard.

Tony Hurst, a volcanologist with GNS Science, said the eruption lasted about five minutes and was unexpected, although scientists had placed the volcano on a higher alert after it erupted in August for the first time in more than a century. Hurst said the dark ash indicated that magma pressure deep underground caused the eruption. A steam-driven eruption typically produces white ash.

INDONESIA No plan to report alleged extortionists to KPK

JAKARTA - Minister for State Enterprises Dahlan Iskan said he has no plan yet to report lawmakers he accused of extorting or seeking to extort money from state companies to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

“I have no plan yet. We will see how things to develop,” Dahlan said before a meeting with the Honorary Council of the House of Representative here on Wednesday.

Dahlan came to visit the Honorary Council to make clarification about the changes in the name of two lawmakers he accused of extortion.

Dahlan has reported to the council a number of lawmakers he accused of extortion or seeking to extort money from state companies when discussing the budget.

Dahlan`s move has caused an uproar in the House of Representatives with some lawmakers challenging him to publicly give the names and bring the case to KPK. Three state companies have also reported to the Council confirming Dahlan`s allegations.

Dahlan said he is ready to face threat by some lawmakers including from faction of the ruling party to sue him.

They threatened if Dahlan failed to show concrete evidence to back up his allegation they would sue him.

The first option is raising the price of subsidized premium gasoline and diesel oil by Rp500 a liter which is expected to reduce fuel subsidies by Rp21.2 trillion, the acting chief of the ministry`s fiscal policy board, Bambang Brodjonegoro, said here on Tuesday.

“The increase of Rp500 is pretty small and less painful because it will have a lower impact on the inflation rate,” he said.

The second option is encouraging all public transport and cargo vehicles to switch to gas, which is expected to reduce fuel subsidies by Rp3.9 trillion in Java and Bali or Rp6.6 trillion nationwide, he said.

The third option is banning private cars from using subsidized fuels, he said, adding this option will enable the country to cut fuel subsidies by Rp29.6 trillion in Java and Bali or Rp50.2 trillion across the country.

“Ideally, the three options can work altogether,” he said.

In addition, the other strategy that the country can pursue the efficient use of subsidies is converting fuel oil to gas, introducing non-fuel oil as alternative energy, encouraging the production

of environmentally friendly cars and hedging oil prices, he said.

According to Bambang, the efforts must be made because the granting of fuel subsidies had so far missed the target, leading to disparities in the allocation of fuel subsidies.

“The higher amount of fuel subsidies will reduce an opportunity to direct the state spending to more productive and quality activities and cause difficulties to control fuel consumption. As a result, oil deposits will be quickly depleted,” he said.

The large fuel subsidies will not benefit the government because they will cause state spending to increase, he said.

Serangan is a small island that lies off the Balinese coastline just south of Sanur and has long played an important role in local religious history. Despite its size, there are actually four temple compounds found on the island and Pura Sakenan is considered one of the holiest sites of worship for Balinese Hindu’s.

Prior to 1996 the island was only accessible by boat and visits to the temple there were likened to a holy pilgrimage.

During the reign of President Suharto, Serangan Island was viewed as prime property and developers began a massive reclamation project that tripled the size of the island and built a bypass land bridge in anticipation of a luxury golf resort. But due to financial difficulties the entire project went into bankruptcy and the island and its sacred temple were saved from the clutches

of greedy developers. As a result, Hindu worshippers now visit the island by car or motorbike, which some scholars believe de-sanctifies the overall pilgrimage.

Serangan Island is inhabited by over 3,000 people and almost half of them are involved in the fishing industry. Interestingly enough there is also a local Bugis community of approximately 300 Muslims who live side by side with the Hindu’s complete harmony. There is a rare mutual respect that exists between these two ethnic groups.

Serangan Island is also known as Turtle Island as for many years it was nesting ground for the Green Sea Turtle. Locals used to catch the live turtles as well as their eggs for consumption and unfortunately this

exploitation resulted in the near elimination of all turtles in this area. In 2004 with the aid of international funding a Turtle Conservation and Education Centre was established on the island and the government imposed a strict ban on turtle trading. With local help, the aim of this centre is to nurture the growth of newly hatched turtles and release them at an age where survival rates are quite favourable. The fishermen of Serangan now try to safeguard these ocean creatures to prevent extinction.

The waters surrounding Serangan Island are popular with surfers especially during the wet season when west-south-west winds blow. The waves average 4-6ft and this once secret spot now gets quite crowded.

D’Antoni at the helm as Lakers beat Nets Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni took charge from the sideline for the first time on Tuesday as Los Angeles leaned heavily on their defense to earn a gritty 95-90 win over the Brooklyn Nets. D’Antoni was hired by the Lakers last week but had only been able to take the team through practices due to knee surgery.

His offense-oriented style helped the Lakers to their highest scores of the season in their last two games but on Tuesday it was their defense that secured the win. Kobe Bryant scored the Lakers’ final eight points, finishing with 25, and Los Angeles (6-5) held the visiting Nets scoreless during a near three-minute stretch late in the fourth quarter to pull out their third straight victory.

Brooklyn (6-3) had a six-point lead midway through the fourth, but went cold in the closing moments and saw their five-game winning streak snapped. “Really happy to get a win, obviously,” D’Antoni told reporters. “We didn’t play well overall but to outplay a team that won five in a row, that means something. (Physically), I feel good. Adrenaline is a good thing.”

Deron Williams misfired on a potential game-tying three-pointer with four seconds left. He finished with 22 points and 10 assists while team mate Brook Lopez added 23 in the loss. “We were right there and we battled the whole game,” Williams said. “We just didn’t make enough plays down the stretch.”

The Nets have been on a tear this season since moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn, and a win would have matched their best start to a campaign

since the 2002-03 season. Under coach Avery Johnson, Brooklyn had been thriving on defense and entered the game allowing just 92.5 points per game.

McLaren admits Lewis Hamilton should be in title hunt

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh believes that Lewis Hamilton would be fighting for the Formula 1 world championship in Brazil this weekend if the team had got the most out of its car this year.

A spate of early-season errors and more recent reliability failures derailed Hamilton’s campaign and left him unable to threaten Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso for the title.

Whitmarsh thinks the pace of the McLaren in America, where Hamilton hunted down and defeated Vettel, shows the potential the team had this year.

“We have to get better, we have to get stronger, and we have to make fewer mistakes,” explained Whitmarsh. “We had a lot potential this year and we haven’t really got what we should have got from the potential we had in the team.

“We will learn from that, and come out stronger next year, but at the moment we are focused in a few days’ time on the next race in Brazil and trying to win it.”

When asked whether he believed the form that Hamilton delivered in Abu Dhabi and the United States shows that he should really have been a title contender still, Whitmarsh replied: “He should have been, but I haven’t spent that much time dwelling on it.

LONDON - Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry could be on his way back to the north London club for another spell on loan from New York Red Bulls in January, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

“He has been practising with us,” Wenger said on the club’s website (www.arsenal.com) on Tuesday. “Will I sign him again in January? I don’t know. I don’t rule it out. He is sharp.”

Arsenal’s 228-goal record scorer, now 35, returned to the club last January, netting against Leeds United in the FA Cup and grabbing a late winner at Sunderland in the Premier League.

Henry could return for third Arsenal spell, says Wenger

LONDON - Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry could be on his way back to the north London club for another spell on loan from New York Red Bulls in January, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

“He has been practising with us,” Wenger said on the club’s website (www.arsenal.com) on Tuesday. “Will I sign him again in January? I don’t know. I don’t rule it out. He is sharp.”

Arsenal’s 228-goal record scorer, now 35, returned to the club last January, netting against Leeds United in the FA Cup and grabbing a late winner at Sunderland in the Premier League.

Erratic forwards could undermine Juventus challenge Both opening goalscorer Fabio Quagliarella and Mirko Vucinic, his striking partner on Tuesday, were good at pulling their markers wide but were also guilty of squandering numerous openings. Serangan is a small island that lies off the Balinese coastline just south of Sanur and has long played an important role in local religious history. During the reign of President Suharto, Serangan Island was viewed as prime property and developers began a massive reclamation project that tripled the size of the island and built a bypass land bridge in anticipation of a luxury golf resort. But due to financial difficulties the entire project went into bankruptcy and the island and its sacred temple were saved from the clutches

of greedy developers. As a result, Hindu worshippers now visit the island by car or motorbike, which some scholars believe de-sanctifies the overall pilgrimage.

Serangan Island is inhabited by over 3,000 people and almost half of them are involved in the fishing industry. Interestingly enough there is also a local Bugis community of approximately 300 Muslims who live side by side with the Hindu’s complete harmony. There is a rare mutual respect that exists between these two ethnic groups.

Serangan Island is also known as Turtle Island as for many years it was nesting ground for the Green Sea Turtle. Locals used to catch the live turtles as well as their eggs for consumption and unfortunately this

exploitation resulted in the near elimination of all turtles in this area. In 2004 with the aid of international funding a Turtle Conservation and Education Centre was established on the island and the government imposed a strict ban on turtle trading. With local help, the aim of this centre is to nurture the growth of newly hatched turtles and release them at an age where survival rates are quite favourable. The fishermen of Serangan now try to safeguard these ocean creatures to prevent extinction.

The waters surrounding Serangan Island are popular with surfers especially during the wet season when west-south-west winds blow. The waves average 4-6ft and this once secret spot now gets quite crowded.

D’Antoni at the helm as Lakers beat Nets Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni took charge from the sideline for the first time on Tuesday as Los Angeles leaned heavily on their defense to earn a gritty 95-90 win over the Brooklyn Nets. D’Antoni was hired by the Lakers last week but had only been able to take the team through practices due to knee surgery.

His offense-oriented style helped the Lakers to their highest scores of the season in their last two games but on Tuesday it was their defense that secured the win. Kobe Bryant scored the Lakers’ final eight points, finishing with 25, and Los Angeles (6-5) held the visiting Nets scoreless during a near three-minute stretch late in the fourth quarter to pull out their third straight victory.

Brooklyn (6-3) had a six-point lead midway through the fourth, but went cold in the closing moments and saw their five-game winning streak snapped. “Really happy to get a win, obviously,” D’Antoni told reporters. “We didn’t play well overall but to outplay a team that won five in a row, that means something. (Physically), I feel good. Adrenaline is a good thing.”

Deron Williams misfired on a potential game-tying three-pointer with four seconds left. He finished with 22 points and 10 assists while team mate Brook Lopez added 23 in the loss. “We were right there and we battled the whole game,” Williams said. “We just didn’t make enough plays down the stretch.”

The Nets have been on a tear this season since moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn, and a win would have matched their best start to a campaign

since the 2002-03 season. Under coach Avery Johnson, Brooklyn had been thriving on defense and entered the game allowing just 92.5 points per game.

The Lakers looked determined to shatter that mark early, scoring the game’s first 10 points amid the excitement of D’Antoni’s arrival. But the Nets recovered to grab a 57-56 lead at halftime before defenses got the upper hand in the second half. “The free throws will come, I’m still going to be aggressive,” said Howard, who was intentionally fouled and put at the free throw line by Brooklyn several times late on. McLaren admits Lewis Hamilton should be in title hunt

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh believes that Lewis Hamilton would be fighting for the Formula 1 world championship in Brazil this weekend if the team had got the most out of its car this year.

A spate of early-season errors and more recent reliability failures derailed Hamilton’s campaign and left him unable to threaten Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso for the title.

Whitmarsh thinks the pace of the McLaren in America, where Hamilton hunted down and defeated Vettel, shows the potential the team had this year.

“We have to get better, we have to get stronger, and we have to make fewer mistakes,” explained Whitmarsh. “We had a lot potential this year and we haven’t really got what we should have got from the potential we had in the team.

“We will learn from that, and come out stronger next year, but at the moment we are focused in a few days’ time on the next race in Brazil and trying to win it.”

When asked whether he believed the form that Hamilton delivered in Abu Dhabi and the United States shows that he should really have been a title contender still, Whitmarsh replied: “He should have been, but I haven’t spent that much time dwelling on it.

“We have underperformed. We haven’t done a good enough job in a number of different ways, but we’ve had a quick car and that is an achievement. “We have done some good things but we haven’t nailed it in the way I would have liked.

Australians find drugs worth $246M in steamroller Associated Press Writer

SYDNEY — Australian police say they have seized 237 million Australian dollars ($246 million) worth of cocaine and methamphetamine found inside a steamroller shipped from China.

Australian Federal Police said Wednesday that they arrested a Canadian man and a U.S. man in Sydney after finding 350 kilograms (770 pounds) of cocaine and meth. The men were charged with importing drugs and face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

It was the police agency’s second major drug bust in a week. On Friday, police said officials had tracked down a boat carrying 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of cocaine to Australia after it ran aground in the small island nation of Tonga. A corpse was found on board.

Officials are trying to determine the cause of death.

MUMBAI, India — India executed the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 terror attack on Mumbai early Wednesday, the country’s home ministry said.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani citizen, was one of 10 gunmen who rampaged through the streets of India’s financial capital for three days in November 2008, killing 166 people.

Kasab was hung in secrecy at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at a jail in Pune, a city near Mumbai, after Indian President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his plea for mercy.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the home ministry sent Kasab’s mercy plea to Mukherjee on October 16.

Mukherjee rejected it on November 5, he said.

“It was decided then that on 21st November at 7:30 in the morning he would be hanged.

That procedure has been completed today,” Shinde said.

R.R. Patil, the home minister for the state of Maharashtra, where Mumbai is located, called the execution a tribute to “all innocent people and police officers who lost their lives in this heinous attack on our nation.”

Indian authorities faced public pressure to quickly execute K as ab, and the gov er nment fast-tracked the appeal and execution process, which often can take years, or in some cases, decades.

The incident inflamed relations between the nuclear armed neighbors.

An Indian judge sentenced Kasab to death in May 2010 for waging war against India, murder and terrorism, among other charges. Kasab cried that day as he heard the sentence.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A New Zealand volcano erupted with a brief blast of dark ash Wednesday, canceling flights but causing no significant damage. Schoolchildren and dozens of other hikers who were walking on trails along the mountain’s base were safe.

The eruption of Mount Tongariro, its second in less than four months, sent a dark ash plume about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) into the sky. Authorities issued a no-fly alert above the mountain located in the sparsely populated area of central North Island.

National carrier Air New Zealand advised travelers that some of its flights could be delayed or canceled because of the eruption. Airline spokeswoman Brigitte Ransom said two flights had been canceled by midafternoon.

The New Zealand Herald reported that about 100 middle-school students and teachers were safe after they were hiking on the Tongariro Track at the base of the volcano when it erupted. Dozens more adults hiking in the region were also uninjured.

Tongariro National Park has three active volcanoes, is a popular tourist destination and was the backdrop for many scenes in “The Lord of the Rings” movies.

Civil defense authorities were advising people in the region to remain indoors and shut their windows to avoid the ash, which could pose a health hazard.

Tony Hurst, a volcanologist with GNS Science, said the eruption lasted about five minutes and was unexpected, although scientists had placed the volcano on a higher alert after it erupted in August for the first time in more than a century. Hurst said the dark ash indicated that magma pressure deep underground caused the eruption. A steam-driven eruption typically produces white ash.

INDONESIA No plan to report alleged extortionists to KPK

JAKARTA - Minister for State Enterprises Dahlan Iskan said he has no plan yet to report lawmakers he accused of extorting or seeking to extort money from state companies to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

“I have no plan yet. We will see how things to develop,” Dahlan said before a meeting with the Honorary Council of the House of Representative here on Wednesday.

Dahlan came to visit the Honorary Council to make clarification about the changes in the name of two lawmakers he accused of extortion.

Dahlan has reported to the council a number of lawmakers he accused of extortion or seeking to extort money from state companies when discussing the budget.

Dahlan`s move has caused an uproar in the House of Representatives with some lawmakers challenging him to publicly give the names and bring the case to KPK. Three state companies have also reported to the Council confirming Dahlan`s allegations.

Dahlan said he is ready to face threat by some lawmakers including from faction of the ruling party to sue him.

They threatened if Dahlan failed to show concrete evidence to back up his allegation they would sue him.

JAKARTA - The Finance Ministry has proposed three options to curb fuel subsidies and strengthen the state budget next year.

The first option is raising the price of subsidized premium gasoline and diesel oil by Rp500 a liter which is expected to reduce fuel subsidies by Rp21.2 trillion, the acting chief of the ministry`s fiscal policy board, Bambang Brodjonegoro, said here on Tuesday.

“The increase of Rp500 is pretty small and less painful because it will have a lower impact on the inflation rate,” he said.

The second option is encouraging all public transport and cargo vehicles to switch to gas, which is expected to reduce fuel subsidies by Rp3.9 trillion in Java and Bali or Rp6.6 trillion nationwide, he said.

The third option is banning private cars from using subsidized fuels, he said, adding this option will enable the country to cut fuel subsidies by Rp29.6 trillion in Java and Bali or Rp50.2 trillion across the country.

“Ideally, the three options can work altogether,” he said.

In addition, the other strategy that the country can pursue the efficient use of subsidies is converting fuel oil to gas, introducing non-fuel oil as alternative energy, encouraging the production

of environmentally friendly cars and hedging oil prices, he said.

According to Bambang, the efforts must be made because the granting of fuel subsidies had so far missed the target, leading to disparities in the allocation of fuel subsidies.

“The higher amount of fuel subsidies will reduce an opportunity to direct the state spending to more productive and quality activities and cause difficulties to control fuel consumption. As a result, oil deposits will be quickly depleted,” he said.

The large fuel subsidies will not benefit the government because they will cause state spending to increase, he said.

BRUSSELS — European Union officials failed Wednesday to reach a deal on giving Greece more aid, prolonging uncertainty over the future of the debt-hobbled country and the 17-member eurozone.

There has been disagreement among the ministers and the IMF on how to make Athens’ debt manageable. The eurozone ministers are in favor of giving Greece an extra two years, to 2022, to bring its debt down to 120 percent of gross domestic product from the 176 percent forecast for this year. The IMF has resisted such an extension.

Agreement on this issue is needed for the group of creditors to pay Greece the next batch of its rescue loans, expected to amount to €44.6 billion ($57 billion). Greece the needs the money to avoid bankruptcy.

Greece has been relying since 2010 on international bailout loans, under terms supervised by the so-called troika — the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission, which is the 27-country European Union’s executive branch. CHICAGO — Feeling the pinch of the sluggish economic recovery, many Americans setting out on the nation’s annual Thanksgiving migration had to sacrifice summer vacations, rely on relatives for airfare or scour the Web for travel deals to ensure they made it home.

It’s not just tight family finances making travel tough. Airlines struggling to save on jet fuel and other expenses have cut the number of flights, leading to a jump in airfares. Those hitting the roads face high gas prices and rising tolls. Now, with talk of the nation sliding off a “fiscal cliff” come January, many travelers said they’re accepting that sacrifices for pricy holiday journeys have become the norm.

“You become immune to it, I guess,” said Chris Zukowski, a 43-year-old locomotive engineer from the Chicago suburb of Huntley, as he hugged his wife and three children goodbye at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and lamented he could not afford to join them on the holiday trip to New Jersey.

“You have to cut back on things just to make sure that you can afford to do stuff like this, so they can go visit grandma,” he said, referring to his son and two daughters.

If the nation’s travel patterns are any kind of barometer for the state of the economy, the travel forecast for Thanksgiving week suggested a slight upward nudge as people and businesses recover slowly from the 2007-09 recession in which Americans lost nearly a quarter of their wealth.

Around 43.6 million Americans were expected to journey 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, just a 0.7 percent increase from last year, according to AAA’s yearly Thanksgiving travel analysis. After a couple years of healthy post-recession growth, this year’s numbers suggested it will take a stronger economy to lift travel demand significantly, the travel organization said.

More people are driving, fewer are flying and the average distance traveled was expected to be nearly 17 percent — or about 120 miles — shorter than a year ago, it said.

Some families are even agreeing to bump Thanksgiving dinner to Saturday, for example, allowing those traveling long distances to get cheaper, off-peak fares and avoid crowds, said Joseph Schwieterman, a transportation researcher at DePaul University.

Aided by smartphone apps, social media and other technology, consumers are getting better at sniffing out deals and are realizing they need to be flexible with dates and even with which airports they chose when booking, said Courtney Scott, a senior editor at Travelocity.

“I think people are really becoming smarter, more creative travelers and shoppers,” Scott said.

For some travelers, the coping mechanism was decidedly less sophisticated: Travel now, worry about the costs later.

“I think it’s my personal style to say, ‘It’s the holidays. Who cares?’And deal with the consequences later,” said Olivia Melman, who flew from Chicago to Philadelphia on Tuesday. The 22-yearold, who works in human relations at Citigroup in New York City, said the costs would set her back, but family is a priority.

Having skipped their Thanksgiving trip last year, Nishiya Sivaruban and her husband were able to save enough to take their two children to the Hawaiian island of Kauai on a special holiday journey. They saved about $200 each on airfare by flying out of O’Hare instead of Milwaukee, which is closer to their home in Waukesha, Wis. She and her husband are originally from Sri Lanka and have family links to the founder of a Hindu temple and monastery on Kauai that they were excited about visiting.

Clinton meets Netanyahu to seek Gaza truce Reuters

“A lot of customers search it and I have just sold it for two months,” he explained. The officers also found herbal products in other stores like in the Icang Store at Tegal Badeng

Timur village.

In the store owned by Ali Nuri, the officers found 25 boxes containing around 300 bottles of herbs of 1 liter package as well as 186 bottles of smaller package. It was also known if circulation of the bottled herbs was also banned by the BBPOM as containing hazardous substance.

However, the officers only reprimand the store owner to no longer sell them and could not confiscate the herbs and cosmetics.

Yemeni plane crashes near Sanaa airport, killing 10

SANAA - A Yemeni military transport plane crashed near Sanaa airport on Wednesday, killing all ten people onboard, an airport official said.

The plane came down in an abandoned produce market in the Hasaba district near the Yemeni capital after experiencing a technical error, the official said.

“The plane tried to land in an empty space in Hasaba, but because

of a technical problem it crashed and ten of the crew died,” the official said, saying the pilot was one of the ten people killed. Ambulances raced to the scene where crowds gathered.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Scientists hoping to detect dark matter deep in a former South Dakota gold mine have taken the last major step before flipping the switch on their delicate experiment and say they may be ready to begin collecting data as early as February.

“We might well uncover something fantastic,” said Harry Nelson, a professor of physics at University of California, Santa Barbara and a principal investigator on the Large Underground Xenon experiment.

“One thing about our field is that it’s kind of brutal in that we know it’s expensive and we work hard to only do experiments that are really important.”

This one hasn’t been cheap, at about $10 million, but like the discovery of the Higgs boson — dubbed the “God particle” by some — earlier this year in Switzerland, the detection of

dark matter would be a seismic occurrence in the scientific community.

Scientists know dark matter exists by its gravitational pull but, unlike regular matter and antimatter, it’s so far been undetectable. Regular matter accounts for about 4 percent of the universe’s mass, and dark matter makes up about 25 percent. The rest is dark energy, which is also a mystery.

The search in South Dakota began in 2003 after the Homestake Gold Mine in the Black Hills’ Lead, S.D., shuttered for good. Scientists called dibs on the site, and in July, after years of fundraising and planning, the LUX detector moved into the Sanford Underground Research Facility, 4,850 feet below the earth’s surface. It took two days to ease the phone booth-sized detector down the once-filthy shaft and walkways that originally opened for mining in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush.

There, the device was further insulated from cosmic radiation by being submerged in water that’s run through reverse osmosis filters to deionize and clean it.

For instance, the developer of the technology, Ivan Poupyrev, demonstrated a doorknob equipped with Touché that is able to register how someone is touching it. For example, if someone wore the tiny device and had an MP3 player connected via Bluetooth, they could control playback by touching their arm or grasping their wrist. In another example, a connected sofa could turn on a TV when someone sits down.

At a recent New York Tech Meetup, Poupyrev showed how Touché could connect to an orchid, making the flower’s stem touch-sensitive. Poupyrev was able to “play” the orchid as he slid his hand along the stem, creating different sounds.

It promises to find porn stars who look like the person whose photo you uploaded, along with links to images and video of those porn stars in business.

But there’s a catch. We tried it using a public-domain photo of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, but whether we used a URL link or a direct upload, the Naughty America site told us that “high domain volume” prevented the feature from working immediately.

Instead, the site wanted our email address in order to send us the matches. We don’t want porn emails coming to us at work, so we stopped right there.

It was revealed by Deputy Chief Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Gde Made Sadguna, when met on Tuesday (Nov 20). Equity of the Bali’s economic growth should have a positive implication for reduction of the unemployment and poverty rate.

“Many of the policies issued by the government even become a predator. For example, the government makes an effort to develop the SMEs, while on the other hand it also gives permit to large enterprises tending to vanquish the SMEs. Similarly, the fruit import policy is detrimental to fruit growers,” he said.

He said the government indeed wanted to do something good, but without being realized the contradictory permit was even issued by the same authority. The community was increasingly weakened by the economic condition that evaporated due to investments in Bali were dominantly controlled by businessmen from outside, not by the natives.

“The non-genuine economic growth of Bali must be addressed

well and wisely by local government as the policy holder in the region so that the economic growth can really be enjoyed equally by all the segments of society,” he said.

Made Sadguna pointed out that other than pursuing the quality of economic growth, the Bali government should also make a positive policy having an impact on the community.

One of them was the development of spiritual tourism that directed to counteract the negative effects caused by tourism.

“If it can really work, it will increase the people’s income and the economic growth, generate low inflation and wide job opportunities as well as equalize the economic growth,” he said.

An economic, banking and SME observer of Bali, I Gusti Viraguna Bagoes Oka, previously stated that so far the policy of regional government in the expansion and economic growth had not been maximal as well as the economic stability was not visible at all. It was reflected in the fixed income of people that was persistently en-

croached upon by the rising prices.

“Moreover, we rarely see the fair policy made by regional government that takes side in public interests.

It is reflected by the permissive attitude of government to the growth of omnipresent modern markets that

tends to cannibalize the traditional markets,” he said.

Viraguna suggested the Bali government to undertake an economic expansion activity in the effort to increase the income of communities and create new job opportunities. The economic stability was the only way to be taken in order the people’s income would not be undermined by the rising prices. The main priority of the economic stability was to maintain the

price stability of people’s basic needs, not of luxurious goods. Meanwhile, the main priority in the economic field was controlling the expansion.

“Economic growth and stability is the key to improving the people’s welfare so that the economic growth is genuine. Additionally, the welfare improvement must be fair and equitable. The equitable governance takes side in public interests,” he said. (kmb27)

many local tourists also frequently visit the bay on holidays and weekends. Now, the area is managed by local community group. A number of travelers who met recently said they often spent holidays to the bay just for a promenade.

Scenery at the Gilimanuk Bay is more beautiful and impressive compared to other coastal attractions in Jembrana. That is why they chose to visit the destination. However, they deplored because such potential had not been worked on maximally, whereas it had a lot of potential to further develop. Aside from the bay atmosphere, there also lay an ancient human museum located just a few steps away. Unfortunately, it lacked of facilities.

“The toilet and shelter, for instance, are less maintained.

If being well maintained, they will be better,” explained one of the residents. Besides, some buildings in the ancient human museum were also damaged. It

indicated if the buildings located around the bay were not well maintained.

The Head of Education, Culture and Tourism Agency of Jembrana, Gede Yasa Arimbawa, said that pursuant to the Bylaw of Bali No.16/2009 the area belonged to special tourist destination. But, this year there had been no development allocated for tourist destination like the Gilimanuk Bay. This year, the regency government would focus the arrangement on Gilimanuk as the entrance to Bali. There was possibility for the development, but was still waiting for the study made by the Regional Development Planning Board.

Indeed, the Gilimanuk Bay has a potential to become a tourist destination with the beautiful view of nature and existence of the archaeological museum near the bay. Currently, the management is carried out by community group of Gilimanuk under supervision of the government. (kmb26)

Bali as a world tourist destination indeed provides promising job opportunities. Unfortunately, the opportunities are grabbed by regional migrants from outside Bali. As a result, many Balinese people take resettlement program and earn a living overseas. by people from outside. Even, some of them take resettlement program because they are unable to compete. Meanwhile, the share of human resources development in Bali remains small because people more focus on ritual,” he said.

According to Gde Made Sadguna, such condition was hazardous for Balinese people amidst the growth era of the economic services. “It is a challenge for the government and Balinese people.

We do not omit the ritual, but reduce it and give more emphases to human resources improvement to deal with the service of the economic era,” he said.

The Head of the Indonesian Worker Placement and Protection (BP3TKI) of Denpasar, Wayan Pageh, said the public interest in Bali to work overseas was very high. He said the job seekers registered in the Bali Manpower and Resettlement Agency in 2011 reached 46,638 people. Starting January to November 2011, the BP3TKI was able to place as many as 14,078 workers of Bali overseas. Meanwhile, up to October 2012, the BP3TKI sent 10,487 workers of Bali overseas to work in cruise

ships, spa outlets and hotel industry.

According to him, the high interest of Balinese people to work overseas was inseparable from their high aristocratic mindset. Most Balinese people were less willing to pursue informal sector because they were more interested in formal sector so that the informal sector was then taken over by migrants from outside Bali. “The formal sector is uncertainly better than formal sector. Necessarily, the informal sector such as selling rice and meat balls should be worked on where so far this sector is widely handled by migrants from outside Bali,” said the man from Sidan village, Gianyar.

On the other hand, he added, the role of local government to work on the informal sector was still minimal. The informal sector in Bali remained traditional and lacked of touches. “The government should encourage and gives space to Balinese people to work on the informal sector,” he said. Besides, the government should continue to stimulate the creation of young entrepreneurs so they could create job opportunities

independently. There should be training and development programs to young entrepreneurs so that they could be independent, disbursement of sustainable capital and provision of business location.

According to the former head of human resources in the Manpower Agency, Bali government had not owned a clear, focused and comprehensive workforce planning both in terms of macro and micro aspect.

Labor condition in Bali was still considered to be poorly organized.

Many local job markets were seized

by foreigners so that local residents were excluded. Based on the data of Bali Manpower and Resettlement Agency, a total of 1,455 foreign workers were recorded to seize the ‘pie’ of job opportunities in the formal sector, chiefly in the tourism sector, in 2011.

“There must be a real intervention of the provincial and regency/municipal government in designing the protection for local workers and restrict the annexation of job opportunities by foreign workers if the sector can actually be filled in by local workers,” he said. (kmb29/kmb27)

According to him, the economic change would bring in the demands of transformation programs. Meanwhile, human resources with special competencies were less produced in Bali. Evidently, there were many universities in Bali, but only a few that could produce the output having the skills pursuant to the demand of the economic change.

By using a bucket, the regent joined with local housewives to carry the concrete mixture. “We highly need the participation of residents to

improve the infrastructure,” she said. She also hoped such an action could be imitated by residents of the other villages.

The regent was proud of the housewives who were desperate to struggle for casting the road.

According to her, the action would give extensive benefits to residents. “As woman, we must be able to show off our emancipation and play a role in the development,” she concluded. (kmb30)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

Elmo actor Kevin Clash resigns amid sex allegation Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash resigned from “Sesame Street” on Tuesday amid allegations he sexually abused underage boys, bringing an end to a 28-year career in which he turned the furry red monster into one of the most beloved — and lucrative — characters on TV and in toy stores.

“Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work ‘Sesame Street’ is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer,” the 52-year-old performer said in a statement. “I am deeply sorry to be leaving and am looking forward to resolving these personal matters privately.”

His departure came as a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued Clash for more than $5 million Tuesday, accusing the actor of engaging in sexual behavior with him when he was 15. Singleton charged that Clash made a habit of trolling

gay chat lines for underage boys and meeting them for sex.

It was the second such allegation in just over a week. On Nov. 12, a man in his 20s said he had sex with Clash at age 16. A day later, though, the young man recanted, saying their relationship was adult and consensual.

Clash was a young puppeteer at “Sesame Street” in the mid-1980s when he was assigned a little-used puppet now known as Elmo and turned him into a star, creating his high-pitched voice and child-like personality. Clash also served as the show’s senior Muppet coordinator and Muppet captain, winning 23 daytime Emmy awards and one prime-time Emmy.

In a statement, Sesame Workshop said that “the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want,” and that Clash had concluded “he can no longer be effective in his job.” “This is a sad day for Sesame

Street,” the company said.

Clash did not address the new allegations. He said previously that he had an adult and consensual relationship with the first accuser. The divorced father of a grown daughter, he acknowledged that he is gay.

At a news conference Tuesday, Singleton said he and Clash met on a gay chat line when he was 15, and for a two-week period, they had sexual contact but not intercourse. He said he didn’t know what Clash did for a living until he was 19 and Googled the man’s name.

“I was shocked when I found out what he did for a living,” said Singleton, a student in criminal psychology who lives in New York but would not say where he goes to school. He said he didn’t consider speaking up until he heard about last week’s accusation. “I thought I was a unique circumstance,” Singleton said. “I did not know that it was something he had done habitually.”

NEW YORK — One Direction’s “Take Me Home” is the taking the boys to the top of the charts — and to new heights. The group’s sophomore album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s the year’s third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift’s “Red,” which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons’ “Babel,” which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week.

“We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us,” band member Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Tuesday from London. “We can send tweets and thank them, but 140 characters is never going be enough to say how much it means.”

The album also debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom this week and is No. 1 in more than 30 countries, Columbia Records said Wednesday. The fivesome’s debut, “Up All Night,” came in at No. 2 in the United Kingdom last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit No. 1 and has achieved platinum status. “ W e were a little

bit nervous about how people were going to take it,” 19-year-old Niall Horan said of the new album during tour rehearsals. “Everyone gets that second album syndrome.”

They say though they’re excited, they won’t be celebrating too much: “We’re finishing rehearsing soon and

we’re going home to bed.”

One Direction, who placed third on the U.K. version of “The X Factor” in 2010, is signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco label imprint. In just a year, the band has become worldwide sensations, thanks to its feverish fans. They released a book and have a 3D movie planned.

They also made the cut for Barbara Walters’ most fascinating people of 2012 list, which includes New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. g o l d medalist Gabby Douglas. One Direction says those experiences have helped the group mature.

BPW gets rivaled by online agencies Bali Post

DENPASAR - The Association of the Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali feels to get rivaled by the practice of online reservation system applied by the unlicensed travel agency. The existence of agency offering the accommodation packages and the sales of airline ticket through online system reduces the business share of travel agencies (BPW) in Bali.

“Aside from reducing the tourist market share, existence of the online agency does not give any benefits that can be enjoyed by people on the island,” said the Secretary General of ASITA Bali, Eddy Putra.

Eddy said the agencies did not have an office or base in this country. Most of the agencies admitted if they were only a branch so that their

headquarters was overseas whereas the business in virtual world should be a legal entity and based in the country. It was intended in order the money circulating in tourism sector could be enjoyed by people and not by the business and capital owners living overseas.

“The loss we feel due to the presence of those travel agencies certainly reduces the tourism mar-

ket. However, there has been no calculation regarding the loss and we have no research regarding their number,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tommy Sutrisno, another official of the ASITA said his party estimated there were many online agencies having no permit in running their operations. Moreover, their existence was difficult to be proved because they were not based in Bali.

“By all means, their presence has shifted the market because they are clearly making many room reservations to a number of accommodation facilities in the region,” he said.

The owner of AWI Tour, Nyoman Kandia, also stated that so far the

services offered by licensed travel agencies in Bali included the airline ticket, accommodation packages, tour package, meals and other services.

However, with the sale of package through online services, travelers could book rooms directly to hotel management without going through intermediaries like travel agencies.

“The increasing offer through online services is also made by the airline management. Even, such phenomenon has come to view since 2003. Travelers only need to book ticket through online system of the airline company without going through the intermediaries of travel agencies. Therefore, the sales of airline ticket and accommodation package of travel agencies

diminish,” he explained.

In the future, the activities of travel agencies, estimated Kandia, would only be focused on the sales of tour package. Such condition could also encourage the competition among the travel agencies.

“Inevitably, travel agencies are required to sell special tour package becoming a featured product,” he said.

In response to such condition, Deputy Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, affirmed that online service was the unavoidable way of managing business at this time. On that account, licensed travel agencies should have a similar business that could offer exciting and varied packages. (kmb27)
