Owner of Rivera plane denies drug connections Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX — The man who runs the business that owns a luxury jet that crashed and killed Latin music star Jenni Rivera says he has never been involved in drug trafficking and that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has dogged him for more than two decades without ever proving a single narcotics connection. DEA spokeswoman Lisa Webb Johnson has said two planes owned by Las Vegas-based Starwood Management were seized by the agency in Texas and Arizona this year, but she declined to discuss details of their ongoing investigation. The agency also has subpoenaed all the company’s records, including any correspondence it has had with a former Tijuana mayor long suspected by

U.S. law enforcement as having ties to organized crime. Christian Esquino, 50, who runs the business and has a long and checkered legal past, told The Associated Press on Friday that the DEA has been investigating him since the 1980s around the time he sold a plane in Florida to a major trafficker who later used it as part of a massive smuggling operation. The federal government has also claimed Esquino is involved with Tijuana’s notorious Arellano Felix cartel, he said, a charge he vehemently denies. “The DEA has been investigating me my whole life,” Equino told the AP in a telephone interview from Mexico City. “They can investigate me all they want and they can investigate Starwood all they want, but they’re not going to find anything.”

NEW YORK — Only at a Rolling Stones concert could appearances by Bruce Springsteen and Lady Gaga seem almost like afterthoughts. Those superstars and other top acts including the Black Keys and John Mayer jammed with the Stones on Saturday night, winding down a series of concerts celebrating the 50th year of rock’s most enduring band (the occasion was also marked by a pay-per-view special). The Boss rocked out with the band on out “Tumbling Dice”; Gaga matched Mick Jagger shimmy-for-shimmy on “Gimme Shelter”; the Black Keys joined on “Who Do You Love,” and John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr. showed their con-

siderable guitar chops alongside Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on “Goin’ Down.” But the Stones would not be upstaged. While the sold-out crowd roared with each special guest, it was the aging but dynamic foursome that generated the most excitement of the night, as they put new energy into their decades-old catalog of hits, including “It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll (But I Like It),” ‘’Start Me Up,” ‘’Brown Sugar,” ‘’Sympathy for the Devil” and more.

“Pelebon” Procession of Desak Gede Raka Nadha

Photos and flowers honoring late singer Jenni Rivera, placed by fans next to religious images, are seen at the cemetery where her maternal grandfather is buried in Hermosillo, northern Mexico, Monday, Dec. 10, 2012.

The band took a moment to acknowledge the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school Friday in Newtown, Conn. “We just wanted to send our love and condolences to all the people who lost loved ones in the tragedy in Connecticut,” Jagger early on in the concert as the audience applauded. Jagger noted the entire world was feeling the pain of the stunned nation. But it was the only somber moment in an a frenetic show that showed why the Stones are considered by many to be the greatest rock band, and belied the much-discussed advanced age of the group’s lineup (their ages range between 65 and 71). Jagger himself poked fun at the senior citizen status of the band and their fans; speaking of the pay-per-view crowd at home, he joked: “Some of you have got your grandchildren watching you.” But few acts in their so-called prime would have been able to match the energy the Stones radiated onstage. The group had the crowd on its feet for the entire show as Jagger gyrated across the stage, his voice in top form. Both Wood and Richards dazzled on guitar (Richards got a raucous, sustained ovation as he took over vocals on two songs). And Charlie Watts kept the beat strong on the drums. Before performing in London together late last month for the first of the concerts, the Stones hadn’t performed in concert together since 2007. Going into these shows, there was some speculation that Saturday’s concert, held at the Prudential Center, might be their last.

Conn. school victims shot by rifle multiple times

“I would have to be the smartest drug trafficker in the world to be able to stay away from a drug conviction with the DEA looking at me under a microscope for 20 years,” he added. The 43-year-old California-born Rivera died when the plane she was traveling in nose-dived into the ground last week. Rivera was an internationally known star who sold more than 15 million records in her career.

Mrs. Desak Raka Nadha admired by Miss Bali

THE figure of Mrs. Desak Raka Nadha, in fact, becomes one of the inspiration sources in the recent Miss Bali contest. Vivacity of the sustainable Bali initiated by the deceased had been made one of the topics of assessment in the prestigious event. Chairman of the Miss Bali Organizing Committee, Wiwin Gunawasika, said the Bali beauty contest did not only select beautiful figures. However, it was also prioritized on the aesthetical and cultural aspects. Meanwhile, Cok Istri Krisnanda Widani bearing the predicate as Miss Bali 2012 stated that she admired the figure of Mrs. Desak. According to her, Mrs. Desak had become a symbol of the awakening of Balinese women without compromising their function. Her acquaintance with Mrs. Desak happened when joining in the activity of sustainable Bali student a few years ago. “At that time, I was in junior high school. We were quarantined at Lumajang Ashram. As a result, we knew further about Balinese culture and customs. One of the activities taught was majejahitan or preparing oblations,” she recalled. Not only culture, while joining the activity in Lumajang Ashram, the sustainable Bali students were also taught to live a healthy life with vegetarian food, modestly and independently. Such vivacity, said Cok Istri, would also be taken into the selection of Miss Indonesia in January 2013. The ashram education initiated by Mrs. Desak, according to Cok Istri, was able to establish the character of students. As a result, she could be the winner in the Miss Bali last week. (kmb30)

Because the chemical composition of seawater is so similar to that of human blood, the skin is able to absorb trace minerals and ions such as magnesium, potassium and calcium sulphates when immersed in water heated to body temperature. The result includes increased blood circulation and restoration of vital minerals lost as a result of stress, pollution and poor diet/lifestyle. Activists ask revision of regional bylaw on HIV/AIDS Denpasar (Bali Post)—

HIV/AIDS case in Bali increases significantly and cannot be dammed each year. It is considered inseparable from the weakness of the government’s role and failure of the Bylaw on HIV/AIDS. This condition makes some circles ask in order the Bylaw on HIV/AIDS was evaluated. After the evaluation discourse was proposed by legislators of Bali House, it is now the turn for dozens of activists coalescing into the Communication Forum for Women and Children Caring for HIV/AIDS (FKPAPHA) of Bali to ask revision against Bylaw No. 3/2006 on HIV and AIDS as it was less socialized. They went to the Bali House in Renon, Denpasar, Friday (Dec 14). “Regulation on HIV/AIDS is no longer able to overcome the problem of HIV/ AIDS. The bylaw has failed and must be revised,” said

the action coordinator, Titi Maryati. So far, she said the bylaw had not been socialized maximally, especially among the related regional working units such as the Bali Health Agency, Social Affairs and Labor Agency. Even, the stigma of people living with HIV/AIDS remained quite high. Lack of understanding, implementation as well as firmness of local government in enforcing the rules had made it powerless and it was considered a failure. To that end, they had the regulation revised. In the future, his party proposed to involve the activists in the preparation, revision as well as drafting of the regulation revision, chiefly in the development plan meeting as it related to budget. Aside from revising the regulation, it was also required a massive movement

against HIV/AIDS by involving all the components ranging from government, private sector, NGOs, businesses, education and customary village. “It will be very effective if there is a massive movement to prevent the HIV/AIDS cases in Bali. The role of community must be involved either through customary village or government. For example, KSPAN should be empowered. Then, customary village medium assembly (MMDP) and customary village general assembly (MUDP) should also be given reinforcement because in terms of regulation they can really set it forth in their rules or awig-awig that people living with HIV/AIDS should not be stigmatized and discriminated considering it remains to happen in Bali,” he said. He also criticized the discourse to provide a special treatment room for people living with HIV/AIDS

in respective county hospital because it would actually stigmatize and discriminate against them. Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House, I Nyoman Parta, said though the bylaw had been quite complete to set forth the prevention of HIV/AIDS, there were some issues to be examined again by the House with relevant regional working units. This politician from Gianyar also described that three aspects should be given an attention in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Firstly, it was related to cultural aspect where the victims of HIV/ AIDS might not spread too widely. Secondly, inconsistent government regulations allowed people to have free sex. Thirdly, the government did not seriously prepare the budget for prevention and socialization of the HIV/AIDS prevention. Whether the Bali House

could accommodate the insistence of the activists in order the bylaw on HIV/AIDS could be revised, Parta said his party would further learn it first and made coordination with the Health Agency. “It needs studying first. But I think the bylaw we’ve made is unable to cope with the rapid development of HIV/AIDS cases in Bali. From the government side, it should be more assertive in terms of financing,” explained the politician of PDI-P. Based on the existing data, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Bali until 2012 reached 6,832 people. This amount increased significantly if compared to that in 2011 reaching 5,561 people. Of the eight counties and a municipality in Bali, Denpasar was ranked first having 2,782 cases. It was followed by Buleleng with 1,280 cases, Badung with 943 cases and Gianyar with 482 cases. Celebrate spiritual transformation “The Mayan theory is not just about a catastrophic physical event, it depends how you look at it; it could also be perceived as a spiritual transformation and a new beginning for the world, and does not necessarily mean we are doomed,” said Ayana’s newly-appointed General Manager, Ed Linsley, who brings an optimistic and uplifting approach to discussions about the End of the World. “The Balinese culture is way ahead of us in being grateful for the simple things in life, and a time like this makes the rest of the world inevitably question whether we are living each day to the fullest, without regrets, and whether we treat each other and ourselves as though there is no tomorrow. Kids play Mozart with violins made from garbage

Associated Press Writer

CATEURA, Paraguay — The sounds of a classical guitar come from two big jelly cans. Used X-rays serve as the skins of a thumping drum set. A battered aluminum salad bowl and strings tuned with forks from what must have been an elegant table make a violin. Bottle caps work perfectly well as keys for a saxophone. A chamber orchestra of 20 children uses these and other instruments fashioned out of recycled materials from a landfill where their parents eke out livings as trashpickers, regularly performing the music of Beethoven and Mozart, Henry Mancini and the Beatles. A concert they put on for The Associated Press also featured Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and some Paraguayan polkas. Rocio Riveros, 15, said it took her a year to learn how to play her flute, which was made from tin cans. “Now I can’t live without this orchestra,” she said. Word is spreading about these kids from Cateura, a vast landfill outside Paraguay’s capital where some 25,000 families live alongside reeking garbage in abject poverty. The youngsters of “The Orchestra of Instruments Recycled From Cateura” performed in Brazil,

Panama and Colombia this year, and hope to play at an exhibit opening next year in their honor at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. “We want to provide a way out of the landfill for these kids and their families. So we’re doing the impossible so that they can travel outside Paraguay, to become renowned and admired,” said Favio Chavez, a social worker and music teacher who started the orchestra. The museum connection was made by a Paraguayan documentary filmmaker, Alejandra Amarilla Nash. She and film producer Juliana Penaranda-Loftus have followed the orchestra for years, joining Chavez in his social work while making their film “Landfill Harmonic” on a shoestring budget. The documentary is far from complete. The kids still have much to prove. But last month, the film-

Trailer truck in crosswise position

Denpasar-Amlapura traffic at standstill for 12 hours

Japan’s main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Shinzo Abe speaks during a campaign rally for the Dec. 16 parliamentary elections in Kawaguchi, near Tokyo, Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012

Amlapura (Bali Post)—

A trailer truck hauling heavy concrete iron for redevelopment project of the Eastern Amlapura market was in crosswise position at a sharp bend near Samuh hamlet, Candidasa, Karangasem, Thursday night (Dec 13). It brought traffic to a standstill for about 12 hours. On Friday (Dec 14), the road could just be opened a half, so that only small vehicles could pass. On Thursday afternoon, residents around the scene said three trailer trucks drove hand in hand and were escorted by police officers. But when the trailer truck in the mid of the flow passed a sharp bend, a tourist bus drove from the opposite direction. The trailer driver tried to avoid the collision, but some of the 16 tires sink into the gutter. As a result, the trailer lost balance and the driver was unable to control so that the truck was in crosswise position amidst the road. By all means, the narrow road was impassable by another vehicle. Congestion from each direction approximately reached two kilometers. Small vehicles, such as private cars, were forced to turn round in order to pass the course where the traffic from Denpasar to Amlapura turned round through Paksebali to Sidemen or from Manggis went up to Putung. On the contrary, the traffic from

Denpasar (Bali Post) –

Amlapura westward or to Denpasar should turn round by passing through Bebandem to Sidemen. A resident of Karangasem that was about to go to Denpasar, Nyoman Pasek, admitted to upset because the Amlapura-Denpasar route was let be broken and bring to a standstill along few kilometers without significant efforts made by relevant authorities. In the meantime, until Saturday morning, a number of truck drivers were made enraged as the road was left in traffic congestion without significant effort, so that all parties were harmed. Many civil servants of Karangasem government from Manggis were in trouble to work to their office. As consequence, they had no choice but were absent to work. Drivers of public transport and truck of quarry C were also trapped on the road and unable to pass, while at the scene there was no stall selling food and drink. (013)

No brake on Bali tourism development

Bali as a world destination touristic island has been graded unable to control the brake of its develop-

ment alias the brake’s broken while its moratorium in accommodation development for three areas: Badung, Gianyar and Denpasar City, seemed only an uncommit-

ted whisper as admitted by Bali Tourism Travel Association Bureau (Asita), Ketut Ardana, when interviewed last Saturday (15/12) when he stated the tourism development

in Bali has to be balanced between South, North, West and East Bali which for that a moratorium needed to be applied. “Yet the law enforcement from the government has been only a discussion and none has been able to control this development of hotels that have been happening,” Ardana explained. This uncontrollable development has affected to the tourism quality that kept on decreasing. Based on Bali Post notes on it, Bali in the 80s had spending money up to USD 300 per person with the length of stay reaching 14 days. The past 10 years, the highest foreign tourist numbers reached 2.5 million per year yet its spending money only reached USD 100 per person with length of stay maximum 3 days. “Many accommodations had tariff war where hotel prices should be IDR 1 million yet down to IDR 300,000 causing their spending very low and their length of stay short as their modal to come here is limited,” Ardana continued. This condition also caused a low law enforcement which is used by illegal travel bureaus as they offer low priced packages as they don’t have to pay law permit. Of course those who have permits can’t compete and it is hoped that regency, city and province governmental component to clarify the law that

has been agreed under the law and regional regulations. The high number of tourists coming is not being fully enjoyed by the tourism companies in Bali as stated by Udayana University Great lecturer, Prof. Dr. I Made Kembar Sri Budhi, MP. as a lot of foreigners are playing in that sector and dominating moreover ironically they also monopolies the market which resulted Balinese people only as the viewers. “Imagine from start to end, tourists coming to Bali handled straight away by their country’s travel company which opened a business in Bali. So what did the locals get? So it is not wrong that Bali itself only got its wastes,” Sri Budhi clarified. This condition is not far from the government’s policy that controls foreign investment or foreigners coming into Bali which affects the multiyear effect instead killing the local entrepreneurs. Theoretically investment is important for main motor in long term development and economy growth which so it is hoped that the future investors to Bali to include local companies or people so that these investors are not only taking advantage alias disadvantaging locals who is the owner of the touristic object. “That is the government responsibility as the policy holder,” Budhi exclaimed. (par)

TOKYO — Japanese were voting Sunday in parliamentary elections that were expected to put the once-dominant conservatives back in power after a three-year break — and bring in a more nationalistic government amid tensions with Japan’s big neighbor, China. Major newspapers were predicting the Liberal Democratic Party, led by the hawkish former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, would win a majority of the seats in the 480-seat lower house of parliament, although surveys also showed that many voters remained undecided just days before the election. Voters have soured on the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, which won a landslide victory in 2009 but could not deliver on a string of campaign pledges. They are also upset over Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s push to double the sales tax, a move he argues is necessary

to meet rising social security costs as the nation rapidly grays. Disillusionment with politics is running high in Japan, as is confusion over a hodgepodge of small, new parties that have sprung up in recent months espousing a variety of not always coherent policy views. One has a nationalistic image, while another is staunchly anti-nuclear, tapping into grass-roots opposition to atomic power in the wake of last year’s disasters in Fukushima. With Japan stuck in a two-decade economic slump and pressured by an increasingly assertive China, voters may be turning back to the

LDP, which guided the country for most of the post-World War II era, after taking a chance on the Democrats and being let down. The DPJ failed to carry out numerous promises, including cash handouts to families with children, eradicating wasteful spending and moving a controversial U.S. military base off of the southern island of Okinawa. The country must also cope with an aging, shrinking population, a bulging national debt and intensifying competition from Asian neighbors such as South Korea, Taiwan and China, all of which have territorial disputes with Japan. “This election is about punishing the DPJ,” said Koichi Nakano, a political science professor at Sophia University, suggesting the LDP’s appeal may be its “brand image” as the “perpetual, natural party in power.”

CAIRO - Egyptians voted narrowly in favor of a constitution shaped by Islamists but opposed by other groups who fear it will deepen divisions, officials in rival camps said on Sunday after the first round of a two-stage referendum. Next week’s second round is likely to give another “yes” vote as it includes districts seen as more sympathetic towards Islamists, analysts say, meaning the constitution would be approved. But a close win, if confirmed, would give Islamist President Mohamed Mursi only limited cause for celebration as it would show a wide rift in a country where he needs to build consensus on tough measures to fix a fragile economy. The Muslim Brotherhood’s party, which propelled Mursi to office in a June election, said 56.5 percent backed the text. Official results are not expected till after the next round. Mursi and his backers say the constitution is vital to move Egypt’s democratic transition

forward. Opponents say the basic law is too Islamist and tramples on minority rights, including those of Christians who make up 10 percent of the population. The build-up to Saturday’s vote was marred by deadly protests. Demonstrations erupted when Mursi awarded himself extra powers on November 22 and then fast-tracked the constitution through an assembly dominated by his Islamist allies. However, the vote passed off calmly with long queues in Cairo and several other places, though unofficial tallies indicated turnout was around a third of the 26 million people eligible to vote this time. The vote was staggered because many judges needed to oversee polling staged a boycott in protest. The opposition had said the vote should not have been held given violent protests in the Arab world’s most populous nation, which is watched closely from abroad to see how Islamists, long viewed warily in the West, handle themselves in power.

Obama to nominate Senator Kerry for secretary of state: media Reuters

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has decided to nominate Massachusetts Senator John Kerry to be the next secretary of state, CNN and ABC News reported on Saturday, citing un-

named sources. Kerry’s nomination will not be announced for a variety of reasons, including the need to finalize the process and out of respect for the national mourning over Friday’s school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, ABC said.

Libor Rigging

UBS faces 1.6 billion fine Reuters

ZURICH - UBS faces a fine of 1.5 billion Swiss francs ($1.63 billion) to settle interest rate rigging charges, a Swiss newspaper reported on Saturday. Citing unnamed sources, TagesAnzeiger daily said the bank would admit 36 traders around the globe manipulated yen Libor between

2005 and 2010. A UBS spokesman declined to comment. People familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday UBS could

reach a $1-billion-plus settlement and admit to criminal wrongdoing by its Japanese arm, where one of its traders manipulated yen Libor and euroyen contracts. Between 25 and 30 people have left UBS over the matter, the sources said. The Swiss bank had hoped for a softer touch from regulators by cooperating in industry-wide probes

and was surprised by the size of the expected settlement, they added. A 1.5 billion franc settlement would be the biggest ever paid by the bank, recovering from a $2.3billion trading fraud by Londonbased trader Kweku Adoboli for which it was fined 30 million pounds ($48.36 million) last month. A settlement would make UBS the

second major bank to be sanctioned for its role in the Libor scandal. Britain’s Barclays paid a $450 million fine in June. Libor is the rate used as a benchmark for pricing trillions of dollars worth of financial instruments and contracts around the globe. Tiny shifts in the rate, compiled from daily polls of bankers, could benefit dealers in complex products.

Greek economy may start to grow in 2014 Reuters

ATHENS - Greece’s economy, expected to slump for a sixth straight year in 2013, may begin to recover in 2014, the country’s finance minister said on Saturday. “I believe that after the second half of 2013 we will be able to see growth, with positive rates of change in GDP on a quarterly basis or month-by-month,” Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras told Imerisia newspaper on Saturday. Wage cuts and tax increases will keep the economy in a sixth consecutive year recession in 2013, with national output projected to shrink by 4.5 percent, based on official estimates.

The economy has contracted by a cumulative 24 percent since 2008, according to the country’s central bank. “Whatever positive we achieve henceforth will be like rain falling in the desert, given that the country will be waking up from a recession of unprecedented duration,” Stournaras said. In a separate speech to a medical conference, Stournaras said Greece would use 16 billion euros to recapitalize banks next week, and another 7.2 billion in the first quarter, after international lenders said they would resume aid payments on Thursday. Euro zone partners and the International Monetary Fund agreed to unlock 49.1 billion euros in aid by the end of March. The

decision to release the long-delayed installment came after Athens passed austerity measures and completed a debt buyback. Greek banks will get the capital injection from the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund (HFSF), which has already provided 18.5 billion euros to the country’s four biggest lenders. “Banks will be able to boost their portfolios with new, strong bonds from the EFSF (European Financial Stability Facility), without accessing the (central bank’s) ELA (emergency liquidity assistance) mechanism,” Stournaras told the conference. Athens is aiming at a primary budget surplus next year.

BAGHDAD — The first new Boeing Co. jetliner sold to Iraq in 30 years touched down in Baghdad on Saturday, signaling the country’s determination to rebuild its economy after decades of war and sanctions. Iraq is eager to improve its creaky aviation industry, which lags far behind that of its energy-rich neighbors. Boeing’s delivery of the twin-aisle 777-200LR plane comes less than two weeks after the company’s chief rival Airbus announced the delivery of one of its own wide-body planes to Iraq. “The arrival of this plane represents a big chance for Iraqi Airways to turn around,” Iraqi Transportation Minister Hadi al-Amiri said. More planes are coming. Iraq has ordered another 30 of Boeing’s smaller 737-800 model and 10 of its new 787. The first of the 737s will be delivered in the middle of next year, according to the Chicago-based plane maker. Airbus in early December said it had delivered its first A330-200 to Iraq. Iraqi Airways, which plans to use that plane on European and other international routes, already operates two Airbus A321s. Boeing last sold Iraq a commercial plane — a version of the 747 jumbo jet — in 1982, said Donald Galvanin, the company’s sales director for the Middle East. He said this weekend’s delivery is an important step toward improving Iraq’s economy. “To bring in business, you need a connection with outside ... and a viable airline,” he said. Iraq was able to get the 777 delivered now because another customer was unable to take it, Galvanin said. He said he expects Baghdad may be interested in buying more of the long-range jets down the road because “they realize they would need a few more.”

Rain flushes Denpasar

Flooding points spread, a number of areas inundated A man is pushing his motorcycle due to the flood. Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The rain flushing Denpasar on Friday morning (Dec 14) made a number of areas get flooded. However, the recent flooding was no longer targeting the areas previously becoming regular destination of flooding such as the Bumi Ayu, Sanur or the area of Jalan Pura Demak, West Denpasar. It spread to a number of areas such as Jalan Teuku Umar Barat (Malboro), Jalan Bikini Utara, Jalan Gunung Salak, Jalan Tangkuban Perahu, Jalan Gunung Lumut, Jalan Gunung Talang as well as a number of other roads in Denpasar. The worst flooding was seen on Jalan Tangkuban Perahu. At least 30 houses were inundated, while on Jalan Gunung Talang, 60 houses were inundated. In the housing complex of Gardenia Village on Jalan Tangkuban Perahu, Gang Mekar Sari, the puddles were even quite high. “It’s the worst flooding since we have been here,” said one of the residents living in the Sedana Merta complex, Pengubengan Kangin hamlet. In this flooding, one of the residents, Nurhadi, 74, suffered a leg wound. Possibly, he stepped on broken glass or other sharp object. He was subsequently referred to Sanglah Hospital to get treatment. “No resident fled,” said the Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Denpasar, I Made Sudana Satrigraha, amidst the flooding observation, last Saturday. A resident of Jalan Tangkuban Perahu saw the water getting higher at 05:00 a.m. By noon, the water was even higher and ultimately it reached the waist height of adult. It happened about an hour after the water came. A number of art shops on the road section were also inundated. Some items belonging to the art shops were submerged high enough. “The water kept rising at around 06:00 a.m. and entered our house when it reached the highest surface,” said the middle-aged man. The flooding caused some people to be unable to leave home, chiefly school children. They did not dare to break the water as it was high enough around their home. Luckily, the officers of the Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency and disaster preparedness cadet (Tagana) of Denpasar came with a rubber boat. A number of school children were finally evacuated to get out of their housing complex. “We are forced to evacuate

the students due to high water. However, the disaster this time claims no fatalities,” said the Section Head of Disaster Response & Emergency of the BPBD Bali, I Komang Kusumaedi, when met amidst the evacuation. Other than at the region, a number of houses on Jalan Bikini Utara (Malboro) were also flooded. The areas located at lower area than Jalan Malboro were quite seriously hit by the flooding. Even, some residents had sucked water to reduce the puddles. “Since this morning, the water has entered the house,” said Komang Yadnya, one of the residents on Jalan Bikini Utara. Several road sections inundated by high enough water were seen on Jalan Gunung Salak and Jalan Teuku Umar Barat. Few vehicles stopped as breaking down the deep water. As consequence, a number of road users chose to avoid the flooding on Jalan Gunung Salak Utara (Abasan hamlet) by turning round because the puddles happened along few meters. Similar condition was seen on Jalan Malboro. As a result, the busy traffic area brought a standstill because the movement of vehicles was blocked. The recent flooding in Denpasar had been observed in person by Mayor of Denpasar, IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, accompanied by Secretary of Denpasar, West Denpasar subdistrict head and a number leadership of relevant regional working units (SKPD). Meanwhile, some of the victims were given basic food aid by the Office of Manpower, Resettlement and Social Affairs. “We ask the relevant regional working units to more alert in the face of this disaster. Probably, the flooding will be even greater at the peak of rainy season later on,” said Mayor Rai Mantra. (kmb12)

Still analyzed, hotel permits moratorium Mangupura (Bali Post)-

The plan in stopping or moratorium in hotel permits for Badung is still being observed further as there is no confirmation when this special regulation will be applied fully when actually to several sides this will control the spatial planning there are even though some stated it is not the right decision. The Badung government itself claimed it as a part in controlling the spatial planning also in building a good quality tourism as stated by Head of Public Relation and Protocol of Badung Secretariat, AA Raka Yuda, when contacted last Saturday (15/12). It is explained with this it will decrease the number of land changing function and creating comfort for tourism sector moreover the tourism accommodation created in Badung will fulfill comfort and suitability standard so it can be a world class destination. “Don’t let 1000 meters squared hectare land can be a hotel. This seemed that Bali is cheaply sold,” Yuda clarified. Badung Government stated willing to be more selective in giving tourist accommodation permits even though all this time it is claimed that they have according to Yuda. Even so such as a number of budget hotels in Kuta seemed to be built forcedly when its limited land with no open space (including greenery) nor parking lot, this shouldn’t have happened. There has been a regulation stating that those kinds of facilities should also exist in a touristic accommodation. So when will the moratorium be applied? No certain answer can be stated yet this further observation will be inside the regulation. In other hand all sides think this policy is not the right decision as investment has been regulated under the law that existed and shouldn’t be blocked except there is violation. This objection comes from a number of Badung House of Representatives members. (kmb25)

Conn. school victims shot by rifle multiple times Associated Press Writer

NEWTOWN, Conn. — All the victims of the Connecticut elementary school shooting were killed up close by multiple rifle shots, a medical examiner said. Dr. H. Wayne Carver said at a news conference Saturday the deaths are classified as homicides. He said he believes “everybody was hit more than once.” “This is a very devastating set of injuries,” Carver said. Friday’s massacre of 26 children and adults at the school elicited horror and soul-searching around the world even as it raised more basic questions about why the gunman, a 20-year-old described as brilliant but remote, was driven to such a crime and how he chose his victims. Investigators were trying to learn more about Adam Lanza and questioned his older brother, who was not believed to have been involved in the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary. Police shed no light on the motive for the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. In tight-knit Newtown on Friday night, hundreds of people packed St. Rose of Lima Church and stood outside in a vigil for the 28 dead — 20 children and six adults at the school, the gunman’s mother at home, and the gunman himself, who committed suicide. People held hands, lit candles and sang “Silent Night.” “These 20 children were just beautiful, beautiful children,” Monsignor Robert Weiss said. “These 20 children lit up this community better than all these Christmas lights we have. ... There are a lot brighter stars up there tonight because of these kids.” Lanza is believed to have suffered from a personality disorder and lived with his mother, said a law enforcement official who was briefed on the investigation. Authorities said he had no criminal history. Asked at a news conference whether Lanza had left any emails or other writings that might explain the rampage, state police Lt. Paul Vance said investigators had found “very good evidence” and hoped it would answer questions about the gunman’s motives. Vance would not elaborate. However, another law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that investigators have found no note or manifesto of the sort they have come to expect after murderous rampages. The tragedy plunged the picturesque New England town of 27,000 people into mourning. “People in my neighborhood

are feeling guilty about it being Christmas. They are taking down decorations,” said Jeannie Pasacreta, a psychologist who volunteered her services and was advising parents struggling with how to talk to their children. Lanza shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, drove to the school in her car with at least three of her guns, and opened fire in two classrooms around 9:30 a.m. Friday, authorities said. A custodian ran through the halls, warning of a gunman, and someone switched on the intercom, perhaps saving many lives by letting them hear the chaos in the school office, according to a teacher. Teachers locked their doors and ordered children to huddle in a corner, duck under their desks or hide in closets as shots reverberated through the building. Among those killed was the school’s well-liked principal, Dawn Hochsprung. Town officials said she died while lunging at the gunman in an attempt to overtake him. A woman who worked at the school was wounded. Maryann Jacob, a clerk in the school library, was in there with 18 fourth-graders when they heard a commotion and gunfire outside the room. She had the youngsters crawl into a storage room, and they locked the door and barricaded it with a file cabinet. There happened to be materials for coloring, “so we set them up with paper and crayons.” After what she guessed was about an hour, officers came to the door and knocked, but those inside couldn’t be sure it was the police. “One of them slid his badge under the door, and they called and said, ‘It’s OK, it’s the police,’” she said. The district superintendent said she was told another teacher pushed students in the kiln room until police let them out.

“I think in 2103 a lot of the names of presidential candidates would emerge from parties including from the Democrat Party,” she said on the sidelines of the party`s national meeting here on Saturday. She said the party`s chief patron, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is also the country`s president, had said that the party`s presidential and vice presidential candidates would be the ones who could garner public support. “He did not mention names explicitly but said “God willing the Democrat presidential and vice presidential candidates would be the ones supported by the people. Indeed we have already had prospective candidates and also set the criteria but their names would only be made known when the time comes,” she said. Andi said political situation in the country would escalate in 2013 as rivalries among parties would increase. She believed political parties that would take part in the election have prepared their own strategies to win it. She said one of the strategies that the Democrat Party had taken was rotating the party`s central executive board members.

She said the Democrat Party would also maximize the role of village heads from the party in a number of regions reaching more than 30 percent of total local heads. “With more than 30 percent of local heads we are determined to win the election,” she said. The Democrat Party`s general chairman, Anas Urbaningrum, meanwhile said at the closing of the party`s national meeting on Saturday that the party`s future was not bleak. He said with unity and hard work he believed the party would be able to win. The party`s chief patron Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is also the president, had asked the party to prepare itself for the 2014 general elections, according to party head of strategy and police development center, Ulil Absar Abdalla. He said the order was realistic in view of the current development faced by the party. “Unless correction was made it would be hard (for the party to win),” he said. He said basic correction needed was about the cadres` behavior.

Indonesian fuel oil resilience still raises concern

Antara

JAKARTA - Fuel oil resilience in Indonesia still raises concern and is left far behind that of other countries in Asia, such as South Korea and China, an oil official said. “In Indonesia, fuel oil reserves can only last 20 days and all fuel oil procurements use Pertamina`s money, amounting to Rp26 trillion. This causes Pertamina`s operational costs to increase,” Ali Mundakir, Vice President for Corporate Communications of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, said here over the weekend. He added that the fuel oil reserves in Asian countries, such as South Korea and China, could supply their countries for three months. “The fuel oil resilience of China and South Korea reached 90 days. Ideally, fuel oil resilience should be able to last for three months. In Indonesia, supplies of fuel oils could be hampered due to the lack of refinery

plants,” he said. He added that one of the best solutions to the disruption of fuel oil supplies in Indonesia was to increase the number of refinery plants. “The construction of a plant has small margins and needs incentives from the government,” Ali said. He added that Saudi Arabia provided incentives for the construction of its refineries. “Saudi Arabia provided incentives in the form of crude discount for Saudi Aramco when it was establishing a plant. The government should have provided incentives and assisted in overcoming the barriers of investment for refinery plants in Indonesia,” Ali said. In the meantime, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has asked the government to phase out subsidies for fuel oils so that funds could be used for the development of infrastructure in the regions. “Kadin has asked the government

to eliminate fuel oil subsidies because, so far, it has been enjoyed not only by financially weak people, but also those who are categorically financially able consumers,” Kadin Chairman Suryo Bambang said. Such subsidy funds could be used for education and assisting local residents` businesses, particularly small and medium businesses. In 2013, the subsidy burden reached Rp274 trillion, and it is predicted that it might swell to Rp300 trillion, he said. In the 2013 state budget, the assumption of the fuel oil subsidy was set at Rp193.8 trillion, consisting of Rp193.3 trillion in current subsidies and a reduction of subsidies in 2011 reaching Rp3.5 trillion. Further, subsidies for fuel oils and bio-fuels amounted to Rp140.46 trillion, liquefied natural gas in 3 kg cylinder was Rp26.45 trillion with a sales tax of Rp17.26 trillion, plus subsidy reductions.

San Antonio Spurs’ Gary Neal reacts after he scored against against the Boston Celtics during the second quarter of an NBA basketball game, Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in San Antonio.

The San Antonio Spurs broke out of a two-game losing streak in style, demolishing the Boston Celtics 10388 on Saturday to claw closer to Oklahoma City’s Western Conference lead. The Spurs (19-6) surged ahead in the final quarter courtesy of Tony Parker’s 22 points and Gary Neal’s 20, to close in on the Thunder’s Western Conference-leading 19-4 record. Kevin Garnett (13), Courtney Lee (11), Jeff Green (10) also put up double figures on the scoreboard in a solid team effort. “We were able to just keep the tempo going,” Neal told reporters. “I think our legs were a little fresher and we were able to keep the tempo pushing forward and knock down some shots.” Starting forward Paul Pierce and bench player Jason Terry contributed 18 points each for the Celtics (1211), but they fell short of claiming a sixth successive victory in San Antonio. The Celtics have been the only visiting team to do well in San Antonio against a Spurs team boasting an impressive 72-12 record in the regular

season at the AT&T Center since the start of the 2010-11 campaign, including a 8-2 mark this season. “The home court advantage played big for us today, especially with Boston coming off a game last night,” Neal added. “It’s always an advantage to play at home. When you make your shots the crowd gets involved and you get your adrenaline going. “For the most part we fed off the way we all played. When you make the shots the energy just builds on its own and that’s what happened today.” The victory came despite Spurs’ guard Manu Ginobli leaving the game in the first quarter with heavy bruising on his thigh.

US Open adds extra day in 2013; men’s final Monday Associated Press Writer

The U.S. Open tennis tournament is moving the women’s final to Sunday and men’s final to Monday in 2013, building in a day of rest ahead of each title match for the first time. The U.S. Tennis Association, which runs the Grand Slam event played in New York, announced the changes Friday — but only for next year. A decision about 2014 and beyond probably will come after the 2013 tournament, USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier said. Rain forced the USTA to postpone the men’s final from its scheduled Sunday slot to Monday each of the past five years. Some top male players complained that the U.S. Open was the sport’s only major tournament that put their semifinals and

final on consecutive days. The men’s semifinals in New York will stay on Saturday under the new plan. Friday’s moves end the tradition of what the U.S. Open has called “Super Saturday” since 1984, with both men’s semifinals and the women’s final all on that day’s schedule at Flushing Meadows, followed by the men’s final Sunday. Wimbledon, the French Open and Australian Open follow another pattern: women’s semifinals Thursday, men’s semifinals Friday, women’s final Saturday, men’s final Sunday. The U.S. Open now joins the French Open — which starts and ends on Sundays — as 15-day Grand Slam tournaments. As part of the new schedule, the USTA is scrapping its Saturday night session in 2013; the women’s final had been

played in prime time since 2001. Now the women’s final will be in the old men’s final time slot, 4 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Sunday. The men’s final will be at 5 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Sept. 9. The tournament will start on Aug. 26. The USTA also announced Friday that total prize money in 2013 will jump $4 million to a record $29.5 million. The increase is the largest in tournament history, doubling the roughly $2 million hike from 2011 to 2012. The USTA has not decided how the new money will be distributed. “Both the prize money increase and the addition of a day of rest are great for the players,” four-time U.S. Open champion Serena Williams said in a statement issued via the USTA. “These moves make the tournament stronger than it’s ever been for all players.”

Peter Sauber: Cutting costs biggest challenge Formula 1 faces

Peter Sauber believes that the biggest challenge facing contemporary Formula 1 is the need to cut costs. Sauber, who stood down as team principal of his eponymously-named outfit this year, believes that a budget cap would be an effective way of tackling this problem. The teams, Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA have been locked in discussion about cost-cutting measures throughout the season and implementing such measures has been made a priority. “I think the biggest challenge today is the commercial part,” Sauber told AUTOSPORT. “That’s not only for Sauber, that’s also for some of the big teams. “Formula 1 is REUTERS/Ricardo Moraes too expensive today, that’s the important Red Bull Formula One driver Mark Webber of Australia (L) spins out and is hit by Sauber Formula fact.” One driver Kamui Kobayashi of Japan (C) and Force India Formula One driver Paul di Resta of But Sauber is concerned about the rate Britain during the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix at Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo November 25, 2012. at which discussions have been advanc-

ing. He has called on the bigger teams to recognise the need to implement change as soon as possible. “The progress has been slower than slow,” he said. “It’s difficult and I hope that the big teams realise that they have to do something.” The Sauber team has been a supporter of the implementation of a budget cap for some time. Sauber F1 Monaco GP 2012A £30 million was proposed by then-FIA president Max Mosley back in 2009 for introduction the following season, although this was subsequently raised to £40 million and ultimately abandoned. “We very much support a budget cap,” Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn told AUTOSPORT earlier this season. “That is the right way we should be going and we should eventually reach the point where we have a budget cap.”

United, City stay in charge of EPL Associated Press Writer

LONDON — Manchester United stayed in control of the English Premier League by beating Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday, keeping Manchester City at arm’s length following the champion’s impressive win at Newcastle by the same scoreline. Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney — United’s in-form strike partnership — teamed up to preserve United’s six-point lead, both scoring at Old Trafford to add to a sublime strike by midfielder Tom Cleverley. City recovered from its agonizing derby loss to United last weekend by winning at St. James’ Park, courtesy of goals by Sergio Aguero, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure, but United’s victory ensures Alex Ferguson’s side will be top at Christmas. “Some of our football was very good and we could have scored lots of goals,” Ferguson said. “We will try and keep the momentum going and consistency going.” Liverpool’s resurgence was ended with a surprise 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa, Everton drew 1-1 at Stoke in a match marred by an apparent headbutt by visiting midfielder Marouane Fellaini on Ryan Shawcross, and Queens Park Rangers climbed off the foot of the table by beating Fulham 2-1 for its first victory in 17 matches this season. “At least it keeps us in there,” QPR manager Harry Redknapp said. “If we hadn’t won today, it would have been absolutely desperate.” Reading occupies the bottom spot ahead of its home match against Arsenal on Monday. Also on Saturday, Norwich claimed a fifth straight home win by beating Wigan 2-1, lifting the team into seventh place and just two points off the Champions League positions. With Van Persie and Rooney fir-

ing in the goals, United looks an unstoppable force at present. Van Persie’s 12th goal of the season — the equal-highest in the league with Swansea midfielder Michu — set the 20-time champions on their way in the 16th minute and Cleverley made it 2-0 three minutes later. Van Persie set up Rooney to wrap up the win in the 59th minute, giving United breathing space and Ferguson an opportunity to substitute in captain Nemanja Vidic for his first game since September. “It will take him a bit of time but that is a start,” Ferguson said. “He is a warrior and he is our captain.” Frazier Campbell’s 72nd-minute consolation against his former club sparked a late fightback by Sunderland that didn’t produce any more goals. City had put the pressure on hours earlier, producing some fine football to take a 2-0 lead at halftime through Aguero’s tap-in and Garcia’s header from a corner. The champions conceded a header by Demba Ba early in the second half and then had to weather an onslaught by Newcastle before Toure clinched victory 12 minutes from time.

BARCELONA, Spain — Malaga strengthened its hold on fourth place in the Spanish league with a convincing 2-0 win at Sevilla in Saturday’s Andalusian derby based on yet another impressive defensive performance away from home. Manuel Pellegrini’s Malaga kept its fifth clean sheet through eight road games this season as it climbed to within four points of Real Madrid before the defending champions host Espanyol on Sunday. After withstanding Sevilla’s early push at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, Malaga went ahead for good four minutes

after halftime when defender Martin Demichelis rose above his marker at the far post to head home Joaquin Sanchez’s well-placed corner kick. Joaquin then earned a penalty kick that Eliseu Pereira drove in to seal the victory in the 70th after Sevilla’s Federico Fazio was redcarded for bringing him down with only the goalkeeper to beat. The two goals were just Malaga’s fourth and fifth scored away from home this season. But the Costa del Sol side also remained the best defensive team in Spain on the road with only three goals conceded. “It’s an important win against a direct ri-

BERLIN - Champions League competitors Schalke 04 have sacked coach Huub Stevens after a poor domestic run, culminating in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Freiburg which saw them drop to seventh in the Bundesliga, the club said on Sunday. Dutchman Stevens, who will be replaced by youth team coach Jens Keller, was in his second stint at Schalke after taking over in September 2011. Despite leading the side into the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League, Stevens paid the price for a disappointing run of no wins and four defeats in their last six league games and is leaving at the start of the winter break. “This was a very hard decision for everyone involved given the merits the 59-year-old has earned with the club,” Schalke said in a statement. Stevens had been a crowd favourite ever since leading the successstarved Ruhr valley club to a 1997 UEFA Cup victory and back-to-back German Cup wins from 2001 in his first stint at the club that ended nine years ago. This season, Schalke started off as Budesliga leaders Bayern Munich’s main title rivals but with a busy schedule, the squad has started to show signs of fatigue as the burden of European and domestic campaigns took its toll on the players. Schalke picked up 20 points in their opening nine matches but added just five more in their next eight games. Stevens will be succeeded by Keller, who will lead the training on Monday and will be in charge for their German Cup round of 16 tie against Mainz on Tuesday. Keller had a brief spell in charge of VfB Stuttgart in 2010.

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Mexican club Monterrey defeated Al-Ahly of Egypt 2-0 Sunday to capture third place at the Club World Cup. Monterrey controlled the flow of play for the majority of the match and scored just three minutes in after an error by Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mahmoud Abou Elseoud. Neri Cardozo flipped a pass to fellow midfielder Jesus Corona, who kicked the ball toward Abou Elseoud, who was unable corral it and let it slip past him in front of an open goal. Corona then pounced on the loose ball and slotted it home uncontested to put Monterrey up 1-0. Striker Cesar Delgado doubled Monterrey’s lead in the 66th when he latched on to a pass from Cardozo on a break to score his third goal of the tournament. Bilbao rebounded from its embarrassing elimination midweek to a third-tier side in the Copa by edging out Mallorca thanks to Aritz Aduriz’s early goal. Aduriz scored his team-high 10th league goal of the season in the 11th minute, perfectly targeting his header to send Andoni Iraola’s long cross past goalkeeper Dudu Aouate. The striker trails only Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao and Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo as the league’s top scorers.

ROME - Lazio moved to within five points of Serie A leaders Juventus after Miroslav Klose fired them to a late 1-0 win over title rivals Inter Milan on Saturday. The Germany international’s 82nd-minute winner, his 10th goal of the season, lifted Lazio into fourth place on 33 points, level with Napoli, while second-placed Inter missed the chance to close the gap on Antonio Conte’s champions to one point. “We put on a good performance and we deserved to have the lead (when Lazio scored), but that’s football,” Stramaccioni told reporters. “We had a bit of bad luck over the course of the game. Klose is a champion and he scored a fantastic goal, but we definitely did not deserve lose... The way we played we deserved a result.” In Saturday’s other game, Antonio Di Natale rescued a point for 10-man Udinese when he scored an 89th-minute equaliser against Palermo, leaving the Sicilians a point above the relegation zone. Defenders dominated the first hour in Rome and the first clear scoring opportunity did not arrive until the 63rd minute, when Freddy Guarin, the best of Inter’s disappointing attacking players, struck the inside of the post with a low long-range shot.

The match then burst into life with Antonio Cassano following up Guarin’s effort by having his shot pushed on to the same post by Lazio keeper Federico Marchetti and Yuto Nagatomo failed to score from the rebound. Inter had their tails up and Rodrigo Palacio curled another shot just wide. With 11 minutes left Klose missed a great chance when he miscontrolled the ball on the penalty spot and let it bobble away to Samir Handanovic in the Inter goal. He made up for that miss, though, with eight minutes remaining when he raced on to Stefano Mauri’s intelligent through-ball and beat Handanovic with a powerful shot. In Udine, Palermo led from the 33rd minute through Josep Ilicic, who finished off a swift break by cutting in from the right and hitting a shot that took a freak bounce over the already committed keeper Zeljko Brkic. Despite Udinese playing a man down for half an hour following Thomas Heurtaux’s red card for two bookable offences, Palermo could not make the game safe and missed several chances. They paid for their profligacy a minute from time when Di Natale pounced after Palermo keeper Samir Ujkani spilled the ball right in front of the striker.

IBP/Net

Conn. school victims shot by rifle multiple times Associated Press Writer

(kmb25)

Egyptians narrowly back constitution, say rival camps Reuters

(kmb30)

a baby is a thalassotherapy session in the world’s largest Aquatonic Seawater Therapy Pool, containing over 700 million liters of seawater heated to optimum temperature. Considering that thalassotherapy is an ancient healing ritual dating back 5000 years, it is a fitting way to prepare for the start of the New World era. Inducing a deep dreamless sleep, you will awaken feeling reborn, refreshed and ready to face whatever the world brings next!

Personally, I couldn’t be in a better place than I am right now, having just moved to Bali for my dream job at Ayana, working among the Balinese people who teach me so
