James Schmidt

James “Jim” Schmidt, born April 21, 1943, in Hinckley, Ohio, has devoted his life to preserving America’s automotive heritage. His passion began early. At just 14, he purchased a rusty 1928 Ford Model A Sport Coupe from a Cleveland junkyard. Restoring it ignited a lifelong enthusiasm for collector cars and revealed the entrepreneurial instinct that would later help shape the restoration-parts industry. While still in high school, Jim recognized that Model A owners needed accurate hardware for their restorations. He began producing “correct” fastener kits, turning his attention to detail into a growing business. By age 16, he had earned enough to purchase his dream car: a 1957 E-code Thunderbird. In 1976, Jim founded National Parts Depot from the basement of his home in Gainesville, Florida. Initially specializing in restoration parts for 1955–57 Thunderbirds, the young company began with a single advertisement in Hemmings Motor News. Jim deliberately chose the broad name National Parts Depot because he envisioned serving enthusiasts well beyond a single vehicle line. That vision became reality as NPD expanded its offerings to support Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles and many other beloved American classics, eventually establishing facilities across the country and becoming one of the world’s leading restoration-parts suppliers. Jim extended his preservation mission in 1989 by beginning what is now the renowned NPD Collection. Built alongside his son, Rick, the collection encompasses more than 220 exceptional American vehicles selected for their originality, quality and historical significance. A longtime member of numerous collector-car organizations, Jim believes deeply in giving back to the hobby that shaped his life. His mission remains clear: preserve America’s automotive legacy, support fellow enthusiasts and ensure future generations can experience these remarkable machines. More than six decades later, Jim still owns the 1928 Model A that started it all and continues inspiring enthusiasts everywhere.

THE HAGERTY MASTER COLLECTOR AWARD

William Lyon

William H. “Bill” Lyon is the former Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors of William Lyon Homes, a company founded by his father, General William Lyon, in 1954. Over the decades, the Lyon family’s homebuilding enterprises constructed more than 100,000 residences across multiple states. Bill’s connection to the family business began early, working construction jobs at age 11 before joining the company full-time after earning dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering and Product Design from Stanford University. He worked alongside his father for more than two decades. Bill’s passion for automobiles was cultivated from childhood. General Lyon taught him to drive in a 1930 Ford Model A pickup, introduced him to concours events and automotive collections, and inspired a lifelong appreciation for automotive history. As a teenager, Bill developed an enthusiasm for American and European performance cars of the 1960s and learned to double-clutch in his father’s prized Duesenberg Model J. A defining moment came when the Lyon family acquired the final 82 vehicles from the famed Harrah’s Automobile Collection, including a 1927 Bugatti Type 35B. That acquisition ignited Bill’s enduring passion for vintage racing and automotive preservation. Beginning in his twenties, Bill became an accomplished historic racer while assembling a distinguished collection of significant postwar competition cars, particularly documenting Porsche’s evolution in international motorsport from the late 1950s through the mid-1970s. Many of these historically important automobiles continue to compete in vintage racing events and are regularly shared with the public. Today, Bill oversees the Lyon Air Museum in Orange County, California, and continues to steward the Lyon family’s remarkable automotive legacy. He also serves on the boards of Commercial Bank of California, Pretend City Children’s Museum, and the Bowers Museum. Bill resides in Newport Beach, California, with his wife, Nichole, and their three children.

JAY C. ACKLEY MASTER CRAFTSMAN AWARD

Rod Emory

Rod Emory was born into a family whose name was already woven into Southern California car culture. His parents brought him home from the hospital in a fat-fendered Porsche 911, beginning a lifelong connection to the marque. Growing up in Trabuco Canyon, California, he developed a competitive spirit through motorsports and, by age 12, was crewing on Tom Topping’s championshipwinning NDRA dragster. Rod inherited a strong design legacy. His grandfather, Neil Emory, co-founded Valley Custom Shop in Burbank in the late 1940s and became known for transforming American cars through thoughtful, beautifully executed restyling. Rod’s father, Gary, carried that ingenuity into the Porsche world through Parts Obsolete, a business specializing in factory-obsolete components. Surrounded by parts, craftsmanship and competition, Rod built his first Porsche as a teenager—a 1953 split-window 356 coupe he raced in vintage events for nearly two decades. Rod and Gary went on to create race- and rally-inspired Porsche 356s and early 911s that looked fast standing still. In 1990, they began identifying these unconventional builds with the “356 Outlaws” badge. Rod and his wife, Amy, founded Emory Motorsports in 1996, building vintage race cars, supporting customers at tracks nationwide and refining the Outlaw philosophy. Their children, Zayne and Jayde, now contribute to the family business alongside them. Emory Motorsports has also restored significant Porsche competition cars, including the 1951 Le Mans class-winning Porsche 356/2-063 Gmünd SL, which earned second place with a faultless score at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Today, Rod and his team work from a discreet North Hollywood shop, transforming original Porsche 356s into Outlaws, Specials and RS models. With approximately 250 builds completed, Emory Motorsports is recognized worldwide for cars that unite periodcorrect Porsche design, modern performance and exceptional craftsmanship. Each reflects his belief that a customized Porsche should remain unmistakably Porsche.

EDWARD T. WELBURN AUTOMOTIVE DESIGNER AWARD

Moray Callum

Moray Callum is the former Vice President of Global Design for Ford Motor Company, a position he held from 2014 to 2021. In this role, he led the design of all Ford and Lincoln concept and production vehicles worldwide, helping shape one of the industry’s most recognizable design portfolios during a transformative era for the company. Throughout his distinguished career, Moray played a key role in the development of numerous iconic vehicles, including the 2016 Ford GT, Ford Mondeo, Ford Focus, Lincoln Navigator, three generations of the Ford Mustang, the Mustang Mach-E, and the latest Ford Bronco. His work reflects a philosophy that balances innovation, functionality, and emotional design, creating vehicles that resonate with customers around the world. Moray’s international design career began in 1982 with PSA Peugeot Citroën in France, where he worked on both passenger and commercial vehicles. In 1988, he joined Carrozzeria Ghia, Ford’s renowned Italian design studio. During his time there, he contributed to projects including the Ford Ghia Via concept vehicle in 1989 and the Aston Martin Lagonda Vignale in 1992. After relocating to Ford Motor Company in the United States in 1995, Moray continued to assume increasingly influential leadership roles. From 2001 to 2006, he served as Global Head of Design for Mazda Motor Corporation in Hiroshima, Japan, where he helped lead the brand’s design renaissance. Among the products developed during this period were the first-generation Mazda3, the Mazda CX-7, and the thirdgeneration Mazda MX-5, vehicles that helped redefine Mazda’s global identity. Moray retired from Ford Motor Company earlier this year after nearly four decades of automotive design leadership. He remains actively involved in a variety of automotive projects and continues to contribute his expertise to the industry. He and his wife, Mary, reside in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

At our home for car culture, LeMay – America’s Car Museum, more than 3,000 thirdgrade students discovered the automobile through history, art, design, science and innovation. Our growing partnership with Tacoma Public Schools is expanding that educational impact throughout Pierce County. We are also broadening the stories we preserve. Later this week, ACM will open the world-premiere exhibition For Gold & Glory: A Tribute to Charlie Wiggins with our friend Ed Welburn, bringing the too-long-overlooked story of an automotive pioneer to life. Beyond the Museum walls, we became the first officially sanctioned organization to complete the Route 66 Centennial Run. Our young RPM apprentices experienced that historic road through the Great Race, putting the next generation behind the wheel of the culture they will inherit. Through our educational engine, the RPM Foundation, apprenticeships are expanding across more than half a dozen states, connecting young people with mentors, handson training and career pathways while preserving specialized restoration skills. And we are looking ahead. The Garage, a planned expansion of the Museum campus, will bring advanced technology, STEM education and robotics to Tacoma students. Across the country, we must continue expanding apprenticeships, caring for our collection, developing meaningful exhibitions and making car culture accessible to more people. Together, you have helped us preserve history, open doors and inspire new generations. But there is still more to accomplish. Tonight, raising your paddle is more than making a gift. 1953 Citroën 2CV - 1997 Peking-to-Paris Rally Car The Peking-to-Paris motor rally was first held in 1907, running from Peking (now Beijing), China to Paris, France. This Citroën competed in the 90th Anniversary Peking-to-Paris Rally, in 1997, September 6 to October 18 covering (10,000 miles). Driven by the USA team of Burt Richmond, driver and Richard Newman, co-driver, the car finished 2nd in the under 1500cc class. Some of the original equipment was modified for safety: upgraded the bumpers, added overhead lights, bucket seats, disc brakes, roll-bar and auxiliary fuel tank. In 2000, the 2CV driven by Burt Richmond and co-driver Brad Green, completed the California Mille, a 1000-mile rally through Northern California; in 2006 the car ran in the California Mille again representing America’s Car Museum, and driven by Burt Richmond and David Madeira. The 2CV is more commonly called a Deux-Chevaux, meaning ‘two horses’ (horsepower rating used in postwar France to determine road taxes paid by motorists.) The first 2CV was powered by a small 375cc, 9 horsepower motor which placed it in the lowest rating, so owners paid the minimal amount of taxes. The car saw minor changes over the years, but engine size and horsepower increased. By 1970 the 2CV6 was powered by a two-cylinder, 602cc, 29-horsepower engine. Over 3.8 million were built from 1949 until production ceased in July of 1990, becoming the most popular car in France in the post-war era. AMERICA’S AUTOMOTIVE TRUST WHEELS & HEELS ANNUAL GALA AUCTION RULES 1.

Each attendee/bidder must register to bid at the Wheels & Heels Auction Site. All participants must be 21 years of age or older.

All live auction lots will be auctioned by a professional auctioneer and will close as the auctioneer announces the item is closed at the Gala.

America’s Automotive Trust has endeavored to catalog and describe the property correctly, but all property is sold ‘as is’. No statements contained in the catalog, advertised on the website or made orally at the sale or elsewhere shall be deemed a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability.

Items depicted in the ‘slide’ presentation are for illustrative purposes.

America’s Automotive Trust assumes no responsibility for travel arrangements, unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be made for canceled tickets and accommodations. All arrangements and coordination of items must be made by the auction buyer and only with the contact person designated on the donation certificate or documentation.

Unless otherwise stated, all certificates for services expire one year from the date of the auction.

Unless otherwise stated, restaurant certificates and experiences exclude alcohol, tax, and gratuity and may have certain date restrictions.

All wine and spirits may be sold and delivered only to persons who are at least 21 years old. All sales of wine and spirits are subject to Washington law, including regulations of the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Control Board.

America’s Automotive Trust reserves the right to withdraw any item from sale.
