It is my honor to welcome you to our 11th annual Wheels & Heels Gala at LeMay — America’s Car Museum. I do so on behalf of the Board of Directors of America’s Automotive Trust.
Tonight is a celebration of our success in establishing America’s Car Museum among the most important automotive museums in the world. It is also a celebration of the formation of America’s Automotive Trust, which has become nationally recognized for its efforts to promote America’s automotive heritage.
AAT and its member organizations – America’s Car Museum, the RPM Foundation and our active Club Auto and Concours Club programs—is ensuring that the automobiles of our past will be preserved for public enjoyment; that enthusiasts will continue to have the opportunity to enjoy the driven car; and that young people are provided educational opportunities for meaningful careers in automotive restoration and preservation.
Our mission has always embraced others who seek collaboration rather than competition. In that regard I’m proud of our formal affiliations with the Detroit Auto Show, The NB Center for American Automotive Heritage, The Gilmore Car Museum, The Great Race, and collaborations with other museums across the country.
While we celebrate, we’re mindful that there is so much more that we can accomplish given adequate resources. Each year the generosity of our Wheels & Heels sponsors and donors has made a significant contribution to our success. This was especially true during the pandemic when closures significantly reduced our revenues. As we seek to regain our momentum, we ask that you generously support this year’s Gala and hope that in doing so you have an enjoyable and memorable evening.
With our sincere thanks to Title Sponsor Titus-Will Ford, Presenting Sponsor State Farm, and all our sponsors. And, of course, enjoy our signature gala fireworks brought to us by PNC Bank!
Join the movement.

NICOLA BULGARI AWARD Glenn Mounger
Glenn Mounger, former Chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, continues to be a quiet guiding force among key collectors and at significant events throughout the automotive world.
A highly regarded expert on classic cars from the prewar era, Mr. Mounger is a fan of everything from Brass Era vehicles to postwar sports cars. He is also passionate about the importance of using— driving!—and preserving cars. In fact, he brought the first Preservation Classes to the Pebble Beach Concours. He also pushed for innovative and intriguing exhibits such as a special class of bare chassis.
Mr. Mounger began to officiate at concours events in the early 1980s and continued through much of the 1990s. He was invited to join the Pebble Beach Concours Executive Committee in the spring of 1999, he stepped into the role of its Chairman that fall, and he served in that position through 2005. He served as Chief Honorary Judge for 15 years and retired that position in 2020 and remains Chairman Emeritus today.
Mr. Mounger also participates in and officiate at this and other concours near and far, and he serves among the directors or advisors of key organizations such as Classic Car Club of America Museum, the LeMay Museum and the National Automotive Museum.
Mr. Mounger previously co-owned Pacific Trail Sportswear and served as Chairman and CEO of MAGIC, the world’s largest international sportswear trade show.
MASTER COLLECTOR AWARD
Denny Aker
Denny Aker was born in Bellingham, WA, and was raised on his grandfather’s homestead, working on a 160-acre farm. Growing up, he became adept at using his hands on all sorts of mechanical devices, such as tractors and plows. The farm equipment often needed repair, so Denny became a master welder and learned how to create parts and fix engines. After some time on the farm, Denny realized that the pastoral life was not for him, and he moved to Seattle to work for Volkswagen of Washington as one of the very few Porsche mechanics in the area. He was drafted into the Army in 1959 and spent 2 years in Texas and then 2 years in Korea. After finishing his service, he returned to Seattle.
Because all VWs and Porsches were constructed with metric parts, Denny found a lucrative niche in the repair circuit in 1965 as no one knew how to work on the cars. Starting his own repair shop, Akers Porsche, he found he loved working on Porsches, especially the 356s. They were simple, 4-cylinder engines which were a joy to drive. “If you treat them right, they will treat you right!”. Denny is retired at the young age of 84, but he still gets called down to the shop, which is now run by his son, for repair questions on the old Porsches. Around 1970, Denny began collecting vehicles that caught his eye. The best way to describe his collection is unique. His first collector car was a 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom 1, which he still owns today. Initially intrigued by the 1930s Art Deco beauties, like the Auburn V12s, and coffin nosed Cords, he later went on to collect Porsches, especially 356s. and antique motorcycles, such as a 1942 4 cylinder Indian, a 1937 Indian Scout, a 1919 Indian Power plus. Fascinated by steam power, Denny owns a 1910 Stanley Steamer and several fully functional steam engine models. He has about 35 motorized vehicles, including 10 motorcycles, several antique bicycles, and hundreds of ephemera artifacts related to motoring history. He owns about fifteen 356s in varying conditions. He even owns a Porsche Tractor.
“Collections are better than money in the bank. Get the right ones, and the values just keep going up.”

MASTER CRAFTSMAN AWARD Paul Russell
Paul Russell and Company has been specializing in the preservation and sales of 1960s and earlier European classics since 1978. A small company of twenty-eight craftsmen and support staff operate out of a 38,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility, applying their mechanical, upholstery, body, coach building, machining, parts, and materials experience on Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Porsche, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, and other fine European collectibles. They consider themselves to be caretakers of automotive history, and, as such, take the time and perform the research needed to determine the best preservation or restoration approach for each individual car.
This attention to detail has resulted in over 45 Best of Show honors, plus numerous other awards and recognitions. Paul’s personal passion is to honor the original designers’ construction details. As a hands-on owner and manager, he inspires his craftsmen to preserve and replicate, whenever feasible, the period construction techniques and authentic details to the extent that the next generation of custodians is able to see the car as it was originally conceived and built. He encourages the interest of other enthusiasts through his presentations at events such as the Revs Institute “Symposium on Connoisseurship and the Collectible Car” and the HVA National Automotive Heritage Summit.
Paul is a Chief Class Judge at Pebble Beach, Cavallino Classic, The Amelia, Audrain and others. He is National Advisory Board Chair for the McPherson College Automotive Restoration Program; and is an active member of the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG), the International Advisory Council for the Preservation of the Ferrari Automobile (IAC/PFA), and has been appointed to the Selecting Committee for the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este. In 2016 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Applied Arts from McPherson College.
PRESIDENT’S AWARD Paul Miller
Each year in conjunction with our annual Wheels and Heels Gala weekend, it is my privilege to select and present an individual with The President’s Award for Outstanding Service to our organization. This year it is my distinct honor to present that Award to Paul E. Miller for his nearly 25 years of outstanding service in several significant roles.
A lifelong resident of Tacoma who has worked tirelessly for the betterment of the city throughout his career, Paul was among the first city leaders who worked with Harold and Nancy LeMay to bring what was then the Harold E. LeMay Museum to Tacoma. Paul along with Karl Anderson, Jamie Will and John Barline became the nucleus of the early Board of Directors of the Museum who undertook the tasks of gaining government planning grants, identifying the current location for the future Museum, and beginning the myriad of planning tasks to bring the project about.
In 2001-2002, Paul became Chairman of the Board of the Museum and directed the search for a Museum CEO to lead the effort to plan, raise money for, and build what is now ‘LeMay—America’s Car Museum’. I remember that time well for it is I who was selected as CEO reporting to Paul as Chairman.
Over the next few years Paul and John Barline worked closely with me to secure the land from the City, hire the architect and when sufficient funds were in hand, begin the construction process. Given his government and development experience, I asked Paul to serve as Owner’s Representative to oversee the construction which was completed in 2012. He served admirably in that role tightly managing the process to bring the project to completion $1,000,000 under budget!
As we opened the Museum in 2012, I could think of no one more suited than Paul to oversee Museum finances and operations and hired him full time as Vice President and Executive Director. I love to say I turned the tables on our chairman for now he reported to me! Since that time and until June of his year, Paul’s dedicated efforts in these areas provided us with first class operations and financial stability and allowed me to dedicate my own efforts as CEO to promoting the vision which eventually grew to be that of America’s Automotive Trust.
The honor is fitting at this time as Paul has relinquished his full-time role and transitions toward retirement. He continues to work closely with me in government relations and future land development. Our partnership continues as it began and I’m grateful to Paul for his efforts, dedication, leadership and most importantly, his friendship.

RAISE THE PADDLE
Throughout American history, the automobile has been a driving force in our culture, connecting us to one another and for most, providing that first taste of freedom that opened the doors – and the world – to endless possibilities. Many of you may remember your sitting in the back seat during your family road trips growing up, or cruising down the main road in the town you grew up in. With life becoming faster pace and more dependent on technology as each day goes by, it’s important to remember these traditions and the way the automobile has impacted our lives not only to be recognized as part of our history, but of preserve it for future generations to experience too. Knowing that others around the world believe in this same idea, America’s Automotive Trust was established in 2016 with the purpose of bringing like-minded organizations to together to work towards a common goal of preserving car culture for the future.
AAT founding member organizations include LeMay - America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington an internationally recognized destination where visitors and members from around the world can experience stunning collections and rotating exhibits of cars and automotive memorabilia as works of art, and where individuals and families can find a wide variety of related fun and educational experiences, and the national RPM Foundation, which is dedicated to driving the future by awarding scholarships, internships, and apprenticeships to youth seeking education in historic automotive preservation and restoration. Donor contributions are vital to help fund these grant opportunities to ensure the critical skills necessary to preserve and restore vintage collector vehicles are not lost.
AAT’s premier membership programs include Club Auto and Concours Club, which grant access to exclusive drives and special events. Cars are meant to be driven! These premium memberships focus on why we love cars by providing camaraderie around driving experiences and feature international travel, annual Summits to shape future of the organization and its outreach, and other activities designed to secure America’s automotive heritage. Established members at the Concours Club level are recognized permanently as leaders of the AAT’s philanthropic support.
All of the entities in America’s Automotive Trust, as well as our affiliated partners, work together to foster a strong community where any car enthusiast can thrive - from the classroom, to careers, to the open road. We believe in not only preserving the passion for cars but fueling the drive. That’s why America’s Automotive Trust exists. We invite you to drive with us and support our cause today.
