A Vision for Local Production and Growth
The speaker is the founder of Vivo, an East African fashion company launched in 2011 with the mission “to see Africa dress itself and dress the world.” She sees a huge opportunity in a market of 1.5 billion people whose garments are overwhelmingly imported or secondhand, and she believes local production can both better serve customers’ needs and create far more jobs. Today Vivo designs, makes and sells almost entirely in-house—from fabrics and printing to logistics and retail—with 29 stores across Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, an e-commerce marketplace (Shopsethu) carrying 300+ African brands, roughly 300,000 garments produced annually, about 450 employees and projected revenue of $8.5 million this year (under 10 percent from exports). The company has raised about $1 million in friends-and-family funding, remains deliberately affordable, and is refining its organization and culture through tools like EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) and Patrick Lencioni’s leadership frameworks. Challenges include heavy reliance on the Kenyan market, rising competition from global and regional players (Zara, Shein, Turkishand Chinese fast fashion, etc.), and the complexity of scaling into new markets (including a brief U.S. retail experiment). Vivo is exploring new African sourcing (e.g., Egypt), adding men’s and “Gen Z” lines, deepening its regional footprint, and aims by 2030 to be a multi-country, multi-brand group that could attract a strategic exit or acquisition.
