hen I think about people with disabilities reaching their career goals, I immediately think of my Uncle Richard. After my parents divorced in the mid-1970s, my mother, my two sisters, and I moved in with my aunt and uncle. I was about ten years old. Uncle Richard was about 35, tall, handsome, and blind. Living with him taught me a few important household rules. First: never leave a kitchen cabinet door open, unless you wanted Richard to end up with stitches near his eye. Second: don't move any of the furniture! If you did, you'd better put it back exactly where it was before he came home, or Richard might walk right into it. I also loved watching him read. He had a reel-to-reel tape machine and could listen to books at a speed that seemed impossibly fast to me. He said his hearing had become much sharper because he couldn't rely on his eyesight. I found that fascinating. But what impressed me most was his job. Uncle Richard was a successful, blind stockbroker. Pretty remarkable in the 1970s, before personal computers and smartphones made information instantly available and more accessible for disabled workers. I remember visiting his office and seeing how he got stock prices. A machine with a glass dome tapped information out in Braille on a thin strip of paper, which Richard held between his fingers and read. I was amazed. Looking back, I realize Richard taught me something much bigger than how to keep cabinet doors closed. He showed me that a disability may change how you accomplish something, but it doesn't have to change what you can accomplish. He didn't spend much time worrying about what he couldn't do. He figured out how to do what he wanted—and then got on with it!

14 Civilian Careers in Law Enforcement Online criminal justice degree students looking for nonsworn positions in law enforcement have plenty of options.

riminal justice students looking for nonsworn positions in law enforcement have plenty of options.

From forensic technicians or public information officers to victim advocates and private investigators, there are numerous opportunities for nonsworn careers in law enforcement for criminal justice grads. Saint Leo University alumna Francie Koehler, for example, has had an accomplished career as a private investigator for nearly 30 years. Before joining Saint Leo as a graduate enrollment counselor, Dawn Farrier served in county law enforcement as a child protection investigator. And Melody Shinner, a graduate student in Saint Leo’s online master’s in criminal justice program, works as a criminalistics technician, another nonsworn position in law enforcement.

The Difference Between Sworn and Non-sworn Positions

According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics , the primary difference between sworn and nonsworn positions is that sworn officers such as police officers, sheriff’s deputies and highway patrol officers have full arrest powers that are granted by a state or local government and the authority to carry firearms. Sworn officers, also have taken an oath to support the U.S. Constitution, their state, sheriff, and the laws of their agency’s jurisdiction, and they have met extensive training requirements. Nonsworn officers or civilians in nonsworn positions do not have general arrest authority. While specific requirements vary from state to state, some sheriffs’ deputies who work in jails or courtrooms, for example, could be unsworn, as well as administrative and support personnel, certain types of investigators, case workers, and specialists.

Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month

What Is the 2026 National Disability Employment Awareness Month Theme?

very October, National

Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes the

contributions of workers with disabilities and calls attention to the barriers that still keep too many people out of the workforce. The 2026 NDEAM theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent.” The U.S. Department of Labor is carrying last year’s theme forward in honor of America’s 250th birthday, highlighting the role people with disabilities have played in shaping workplaces, communities, and the economy. There’s still a long way to go. In August 2026, only 39.8% of working-age people with disabilities were employed, compared with nearly 75% of people without disabilities.

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), opportunities for competitive, integrated employment are even more limited.

The 2026 NDEAM theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent.” The U.S. Department of Labor chose to continue the 2025 theme through 2026 as the country marks its 250th birthday.

Celebrating this month means making sure people with disabilities have access to jobs, advancement, fair wages, and workplaces where they can succeed.

The theme highlights the role people with disabilities have played throughout American history and the skills, expertise, and perspectives they bring to workplaces today. Celebrating that value also means making sure people with disabilities have access to jobs, advancement, fair wages, and workplaces where they can succeed.

People with disabilities continue to face barriers to finding jobs, staying employed, and advancing in their careers. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), those barriers can be compounded by limited access to employment supports and too few opportunities for competitive, integrated employment.

Those barriers show up in a striking employment gap. Working-age people without disabilities are nearly twice as likely to be employed as people with disabilities. For people with IDD, the gap can be even greater. In 2024, only 16% of people

receiving services from state IDD agencies were working in individual, competitive integrated jobs. The problem isn’t a lack of talent or desire to work. Employers can underestimate workers with disabilities or make assumptions about what they can do, what support they will need, or how much accommodations will cost.

Common barriers include: • Hiring bias and low expectations • Inaccessible applications and interviews • Inadequate workplace accommodations • Transportation and support barriers • Limited opportunities for promotion and career growth • Concerns about how earnings could affect Medicaid, SSI, or other essential benefits • Too few opportunities for competitive, integrated employment The Arc advocates for competitive, integrated employment, where people with disabilities work alongside people without disabilities, receive comparable wages, and have opportunities to advance in their careers.

What Employment Rights Do People With Disabilities Have?

Research from Accenture and Disability:IN found that companies identified as leaders in disability inclusion had 1.6 times

more revenue, 2.6 times more net income, and twice the economic profit of other companies participating in the Disability

Equality Index. They were also 25% more likely to outperform their industry peers on productivity, measured by revenue per employee. Employees with disabilities bring skills and expertise across every industry. Disability-inclusive workplaces can also push companies to improve technology, communication, flexibility, and other practices in ways that can benefit the broader workforce. The Arc knows the value of inclusive employment firsthand. Our employment stories feature people with IDD building careers across industries and employers describing the value they bring to their workplaces.

People with disabilities should be hired for the same reason anyone else is hired: because they have the skills, experience, and potential to contribute.

People with disabilities are protected from employment discrimination under federal law, and qualified applicants and employees may have the right to reasonable accommodations.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), employers can’t discriminate based on disability in hiring, pay, promotions, training, job assignments, firing, and other employment practices. Federal employment protections under the ADA generally apply to private employers with 15 or more employees and to state and local government employers. Some state and local laws offer additional protections. A reasonable accommodation is a change to the hiring process, work environment, or way a job is usually done that gives a qualified person with a disability an equal employment opportunity. Examples could include accessible technology, a modified schedule, changes in how information is communicated, or adjustments to the physical workspace. Workers also don’t need to use legal language to ask for an accommodation. They can tell an employer they need a change at work because of a disability or medical condition. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says there are no required “magic words” for making a request.

Why Should Companies Hire People With Disabilities?

Hiring people with disabilities gives companies access to talent that too often gets overlooked. Research has also found a strong relationship between disability inclusion and business performance.

November 2026

How Much Do Workplace Accommodations Cost?

Workplace accommodations often cost far less than employers expect. According to the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), 61% of employers who reported accommodation costs said the accommodations they provided cost nothing. For accommodations with a one-time cost, the median expense was $300.

Accommodations can be as simple as changing a work schedule, adjusting how information is communicated, modifying a workplace policy, or providing equipment or technology. What works depends on the employee and the job. Employers in JAN’s research also reported benefits from accommodations, including retaining valuable employees and improving productivity and morale.

How Can Employers Hire More People With Disabilities?

Employers can hire more people with disabilities by removing barriers from recruiting, applications, interviews, and onboarding and by intentionally reaching job seekers with disabilities.

Start by asking: • Are your online applications and career pages accessible? • Do job descriptions include requirements that aren’t actually necessary to do the job? • Do applicants know they can request an accommodation during the hiring process? • Can you offer different interview formats when appropriate? • Are recruiters and hiring managers trained to recognize implicit bias about disability and focus on a candidate’s skills and qualifications? Staying Motivated at Work

T

here are those who naturally brim with motivation. They know exactly what they need to do and do it daily. If that’s you, congratulations, no need to read further! Others, however, may be more familiar with this routine: a burst or two of productivity followed by a drop in focus, and then a lapse into wondering what to have for dinner. You concentrate again and ‘get back in the zone’ only for a text or social media alert to break the spell. And then you start over again... While it’s a struggle for many to stay relentlessly focused on work tasks during office hours, try this one big tip to see if it can help motivate you.

Routines Rule: Get One if You Don’t Have One

Forget the idea of routine as a drudge. Think of it instead as a tool to help you engage in the most rewarding jobs by prioritising your workload – a daily framework, if you like, for getting a lot of tasks done. While many people can do their jobs easily enough without needing to scrutinise how and why they’re successful, a clear and set routine is often the key. Why? When your day’s structure is already firmly in place, you’re free to focus on getting the actual work done rather

Page 15

than waste energy on constantly planning what to do next. If your days can be unpredictable and you don’t yet have a routine, start by at least trying to create one. Write an exhaustive list of everything you need to do in the week ahead, and be sure to include long-term projects you’re working on as well as daily commitments and any work group demands or scheduled meetings. Look at it closely to see if you can group a number of tasks together. Next, spread all your jobs – why not number them if it helps – across the five days so you have a clear set of daily ‘to-do’ lists. If you can, add in ‘spare time’ (even if only half an hour or so in each day) to give you a breather if needed or to fit in unexpected extras. Do your utmost to stick to the new routine and fine-tune it to suit your circumstances. Keep doing it every week so that it becomes a habit. Of course, everybody works differently and you may find a routine holds you back – it’ll be up to you to try and test what works best for you. Need a little inspiration? Searching for the daily routines of famous entrepreneurs including Benjamin Franklin and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey could help. Article providede by www.barclayslifeskills.com

Why the Nursing Profession NEEDS NEW NURSES RIGHT NOW

N

ursing is the nation’s largest healthcare profession, with nearly 5 million RNs throughout the U.S. The field is continuously growing, with projections showing that many more nurses will be needed in the coming years to keep up with demand.

“Nursing is a dynamic profession that offers a variety of opportunities to combine clinical expertise with compassion when caring for individuals, families, and communities,” said Dr. Deborah Trautman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). “As the most trusted healthcare provider, nurses serve as great leaders, collaborators, innovators, and patient advocates.” With so many opportunities available, there is no better time to start your education and join the nursing profession.

The State of the Nursing Profession

The nursing profession is rapidly changing. Over 166,100 new registered nurse positions will be created each year in the U.S. through 2034, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Reports also project a shortage of 63,720 full-time RNs by 2030. Nurses make up the largest sector of the healthcare workforce. They are also the primary providers of hospital patient care and deliver most of the country’s long-term care. Federal workforce analysts expect the nursing field to grow by 5% by 2034, representing faster growth than most other professions. This critical need for healthcare professionals presents countless opportunities for new nurses to step into the profession and offer their expertise in a multitude of areas. RNs are in high demand in most acute care and community settings. Job growth is expected in most areas but, according to the BLS, the need is most significant in hospitals and outpatient care centers that provide same-day services, such as chemotherapy, rehabilitation, and surgery, as well as home care or residential care facilities. Why is the profession projected to have so many openings in the future? There are a few reasons:

Current nurses are retiring.

Many current nurses are retiring or otherwise transitioning out of the field. The median age of RNs is currently 46, and, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, at least a quarter of those plan to leave nursing in the next five years.

Demographic changes.

There are more older adults in the U.S. than ever before. Nurses are needed to help this population maintain their health and quality of life. In addition, more nurses are needed to educate and care for patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, across multiple demographics.

Over 166,100 new registered nurse positions will be created each year in the U.S. through 2034, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nursing school enrollment.

Enrollment rates, especially for master’s and PhD programs, are not growing fast enough to meet the projected demand for RNs and APRNs. The decline in students enrolling and graduating from nursing school reduces the healthcare system’s ability to meet patient needs.

Nurses Are Critical to Sustaining the Nation’s Health

It goes without saying that nurses are a vital part of the healthcare system. Nurses deliver many invaluable services to patients, including assessing their conditions, recording their medical history, administering medications and treatments, setting up care plans, and so much more.

There are four times as many RNs in the U.S. as physicians, and the scope of their work is extensive. Primary and preventative care by nurse practitioners covers a variety of specialized areas, such as pediatrics, family health, and gerontological care. Nurses can also become certified to perform services as nursemidwives, nurse anesthetists, and other advanced specialties. A shortage of nurses raises concerns about adequate staffing levels and quality of care across communities. Various studies show that a lack of nurses leads to issues such as high patient turnover, longer wait times in healthcare facilities, and increased patient mortality.

How AI is Affecting Careers in Computing

A

rtificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping nearly every aspect of computing, from how software is built to where computing professionals work. For students, job seekers, and career changers who love technology, the rise of AI isn’t the end of opportunity—it’s a shift in how computing careers look, what skills are valuable, and where innovation is happening. Whether you’re passionate about robotics, software engineering, cybersecurity, or data science, the key is learning to use AI as a tool while building human-centered skills that technology can’t replace.

Key Takeaways About Careers in Computing

Computing careers aren’t disappearing. They’re evolving.

AI is changing the nature of jobs, but demand for skilled computing professionals remains strong. Some key concepts to consider when preparing for a computing career: • AI literacy is a must. Understanding how AI works, its limitations, and its ethical implications will be essential for all computing roles. • Entry-level jobs are shifting, not vanishing. Generative AI can automate some programming tasks, but human problem-solving and oversight remain critical. • Hybrid careers are booming. Combining computing skills with fields like healthcare, finance, automotive, and defense opens up new possibilities.

• Ethics, policy, and critical thinking matter more than ever. AI raises important questions about bias, privacy, security, and energy use. • AI is a growth engine. While some roles will decline, others will grow, and new, AI-driven jobs will outpace those lost.

Is It Still Worth It to Study Computer Science?

Yes—perhaps now more than ever. Computing is the foundation for AI and countless other emerging technologies. Without experts who understand algorithms, data structures, cybersecurity, and systems design, AI itself couldn’t exist or function effectively.

Historically, computing enrollments have gone through cycles. After the dot-com bust and the Great Recession, numbers dipped but rebounded as new opportunities emerged. Today, we’re in another transitional moment. But long-term career prospects remain strong, especially for those who combine technical expertise with adaptability.

Are Graduates With Computing Degrees Still in Demand?

The short answer: yes. But the expectations and the job landscape are changing. Recent data shows that unemployment rates for new computer science and computer engineering graduates have risen compared to some other fields. This is partly due to: • Post-pandemic corrections in Big Tech hiring after rapid expansion • Generative AI reshaping entry-level work • Economic uncertainty affecting hiring patterns The headlines related to job losses indicate a huge shift in the field, but don’t tell the whole story. Employers in

Page 24

industries from finance to manufacturing to healthcare are eager for computing talent. The difference is that jobs are now more dispersed across sectors rather than concentrated solely in Silicon Valley or the tech industry.

Will Entry-level Programming Jobs Go Away Because of AI?

Generative AI can now write code, debug programs, and even build applications, sometimes faster than human programmers. But that doesn’t mean entry-level roles will vanish. Here’s the shift: • Routine, repetitive coding tasks will be increasingly automated. • Programmers who use AI to speed up their work will be far more valuable than those who ignore it. • Skills in problem definition, systems integration, and testing will matter more than memorizing syntax. Some entry-level jobs may also be outsourced internationally thanks to improved remote work tools and processes. But human oversight remains essential, especially for projects requiring contextual knowledge, creativity, and ethical judgment.

What Computer Jobs Will AI Take Over?

AI is likely to take on roles that free human workers to focus on more complex, creative, and strategic tasks. Some of the tasks that AI can take on include: • Highly repetitive data processing • Basic quality assurance testing • Routine code generation for well-defined problems • Certain technical support functions

What Computer Jobs Will AI Not Replace?

AI can assist, but human insight, ethics, and leadership are irreplaceable. While artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, it can't replace professional roles including: • Systems architects who design complex, multi-layered computing environments • Cybersecurity specialists who understand evolving human threats • Ethical AI experts who develop and enforce policy safeguards • Human-computer interaction (HCI) designers who optimize user experience • Project managers who align technology with business goals

AI's Effect on the Computing Job Market

The World Economic Forum predicts that while millions of roles will be automated, twice as many new jobs will be created in AI-related fields and adjacent industries. The key will be preparing for "jobs of the future" rather than clinging to legacy roles.

How to Prepare for AI and the Future

Even if your specialty isn't AI-based, it's important to learn AI fundamentals to keep your career skills relevant. You'll also want to consider how you can build cross-disciplinary knowledge of AI into any career. This could include things like

Human oversight remains essential, especially for projects requiring contextual knowledge, creativity, and ethical judgment. computing plus biology, computing plus business, or computing plus engineering. Here are a few ways to ensure you're keeping pace with AI's growth as it relates to your career: • Stay current with tools and frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and cloud platforms. • Get comfortable by proactively using AI in your current work. Learn to use the tools for your benefit. • Practice ethical reasoning to anticipate AI's societal impact. • Develop adaptability, remembering that your future job title may not exist yet.

ow to Stand Out H in a World Driven by AI

Employers value graduates who can learn, adapt, and stay engaged with how technological changes are affecting their field. They appreciate job candidates who can: • Use AI effectively and responsibly • Communicate across technical and non-technical teams • Understand the broader business, cultural, and ethical context of their work • Continuously learn and upskill as technologies evolve

Looking Ahead: The Future of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to AI systems that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, much like a human can. Unlike today's narrow AI, which is specialized for specific tasks (like image recognition, translation, or code generation), AGI would be capable of reasoning, adapting, and transferring knowledge between domains without explicit reprogramming.
