It is important that we educate ourselves on the issues facing our country, how we would like them to be handled, and learn which candidate most closely aligns with our belief systems. Think about how the actions of the next president will affect you and the people around you—where you live, where you work, your state, our country and even those in other parts of the world. It is important that each of us makes an informed decision and act upon that decision on Tuesday, November 6th.

Unfortunately, not enough people make it to the polls, but we’re getting better. In 2008 only 61.6% of the nation’s eligible voters actually voted, more than any election since 1968 when Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey. Not bad, but I think we can do better.

5 Ways to Help Your Team Perform Better W

hen we think of diversity, most of us first think of race, ethnicity, gender and age. We think of the legendary Louis Armstrong’s lyrics from his song, “What a Wonderful World,” that allude to the notion: “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky, are also on the faces of people going by.” Yet, diversity in organizations is a much broader spectrum than that. It encompasses diversity in passions, talents, personality, motivations and experience, to name a few.

But diversity is not about focusing on how we differ—as author Ola Joseph puts it, it is about “embracing one another’s uniqueness.” Leaders who recognize and celebrate the uniqueness of their people help their teams perform better. Harnessing the richness of diversity can lead to better problem-solving and decision-making and increased creativity and innovation.

Here are some inspirations to help you raise your diversity awareness so that you can capitalize on its value.

Optimize the innovativeness of team members.

There is ample research to show that the most innovative teams are composed of varied individuals with different styles, approaches or skill sets. In The Ten Faces of Innovation, author Tom Kelley, who is also the general manager of the design company IDEO, describes the 10 personas that are crucial for establishing a culture of innovation. These include, for example, The CrossPollinator, who has the ability to draw associations and connections between seemingly unrelated concepts to break new ground, or The Hurdler, whose skills lie in being a tireless problem-solver who enjoys tackling something that’s never been done before. Here’s a brief introduction of the Ten Faces. If you want to fuel innovation, make sure that each of these 10 personas has a place on your team.

Help people live their passions.

each person. A company that understands the importance of supporting their employees’ individual passions is Amex Bank of Canada. As explained in the article, “Amex Ignites Employees Passions—for Living and for Work,” the company has instituted a program called “Realize the Potential,” which recognizes and supports the people who are taking the time to identify their passions and realize their potential—whether it is through charity work, taking a sabbatical for adventure travel or being mentored by the company’s top people. With this program, Amex is sending a message to their people that they want to know the whole person, so they encourage people to tell their managers about their passions—and to explore them while working within Amex.

Accommodating employees’ passions is a smart thing to do. It engenders loyalty and the enthusiasm spills over into one’s work.

Educate the organization about “micro-inequities.”

This idea comes from Douglas R. Conant, retired president and CEO of the Campbell Soup Company. In a Harvard Business Review article, “How to Make Diversity and Inclusion Real,” Conant defines “micro-inequities” as the common behaviors that undermine a culture of inclusion. Conant set up courses to raise his managers’ awareness of these behaviors. An example of this is the language used. “Too many male managers,” says Conant, “may rely too heavily on sports analogies—a habit that might not be inclusive for women and nonathletes.

listen, speak and act more inclusively.”

Know what motivates people.

If you want to motivate people to give you the best that they have to offer, consider that not everyone is motivated by the same things. In his book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink shows that external rewards (what he calls the carrot-and-stick approach) incentivize performance when the work is simple and straightforward and involves only mechanical skills. But for nonroutine jobs, when the work entails even rudimentary cognitive skills, external rewards don’t work. Instead, there are three crucial factors that motivate people to perform better: Autonomy: People are motivated by a desire to be self-directed.

Mastery: People have an innate desire to become better at what they do.

Purpose: People want to have a sense of deeper purpose in their work.

Consider these motivators and give people the flexibility to choose the way they want to complete their work; give them opportunities to master their craft, to develop and grow and, finally, inspire them with a deeper purpose, a higher ideal than simply making more money for the company. As Pink says, don’t unhinge profit from purpose.

Guard against viewing people through a narrow lens and be wide open to the broad landscape of diversity.

Family Ties: First Female Licensed Electrician in New York

W

hen Gina Addeo goes to work, she enters a man’s world. While more women are entering the electrical industry, few pioneers like Gina have blazed trails for them. For her, it is not a matter of breaking into a boys club—it is a family affair. After all, a good percentage of electrical contractors follow in their father’s footsteps. What makes the Addeo family unusual is that it is not just the boys doing the following or leading. For ADCO Electrical Corp. and GMA Electrical Corp., both in Staten Island, N.Y., electrical contracting is a family thing.

Gender has nothing to do with it.

Gina Michelle Addeo is the first female electrician licensed

by New York City and is also founder and sole owner of GMA Electrical Corp. Today, with a medium-sized business, she garners respect from her colleagues in the industry, nearly all men. The New York business is 12 years old and a major player in New York’s electrical projects.

There are significant advantages to being a minority or female in the industry. Gina has her company certified as a Women-owned Business Enterprise (WBE) by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the city of New York, and the state of New York.

That status has helped the company thrive. The Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises program was developed to ensure minority and women-owned firms have an equal opportunity to participate. It offers incentives to hiring a percentage of women- or minority-owned businesses during a construction project.

Addeo, opened his own small business, ADCO Electrical in Staten Island in the mid-1970s. It amounted to a few office staff and a handful of electricians; several employees were family members. Starting at age 15, Gina came into the business to answer phones, help around the office and learn how the business worked.

“I was there every chance I could get,” she said.

After school, weekends and summers, the teenager was learning the basics of electrical contracting and running a business. Not only did she learn some of the technical side of electrical contracting, she watched her father’s company grow.

“I knew I wanted to do something in the electrical industry, and I found it interesting. I admired my dad, and I wanted to help him,” she said.

ADCO was a family business. As the company grew, Richard Addeo’s father and father-in-law joined its ranks. When it came time for college, Gina said her mind had already been made for her.

“I was good at math and science and was interested in electricity,” she said.

That led her to Stevens Institute and electrical engineering. Addeo graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J., with a BSEE. Straight out of school, looking for work in Manhattan, she joined the former Rich Inc., where she spent two-and-a-half years working with customized computer systems.

When business lagged for the company, she looked for a position at ADCO and found one in 1986. She also joined the IBEW Local Union 3. ADCO had been growing steadily as Gina worked on her education. By 1986, it had grown to be one of the largest electrical contractors in New York City with between 500 and 700 electricians and an office staff of about 70. Robert Harper, now senior vice president at ADCO, was project manager when Gina came on board, and she served as his assistant.

“She took everything seriously,” Harper said. “Once she got to work she was great.”

In 1992 she decided to take another step.

“I don’t know who, how or what put the idea in my head,” she said, “but I decided to get my license.”

She pointed out that most men, especially those whose father owned the business, would take that kind of step after several years on the job, and that was what she wanted to do. When she entered the classroom in New York City she discovered two things: there were no women in New York City with an electrical license and she knew more about the electrical business than she had realized. She was enrolled in the first class that included women—there were three of them—and was the first to get her license.

Gina quickly came to the conclusion that she could open her own business. The IBEW Local 3 chapter had room for more electricians, so she rented out a storefront in Staten Island, named the company after the initials of her name, and got to work. The office consisted of several desks for the different functions of the business, although Gina said she sat at all of them. There were initially no office employees. Her first electrician and foreman was John Reilly who went on to become the company superintendent.

“I was really fortunate because I had John,” she said.

“He’s someone who thinks outside of the box. He doesn’t wait for me to tell him everything.”

GMA’s first job was for the New York/New Jersey Port Authority at the World Trade Center. She secured the job, she said, because her company is a WBE. By 1998, she added a bookkeeper and a handful of electricians.

Meanwhile, ADCO also continued to grow, becoming one of the largest contractors in New York City. In 2003, ADCO built a new 75,000-squarefoot building on Staten Island. GMA became ADCO’s first tenant and the two companies became neighbors.

“We do similar types of work,” she said of GMA and ADCO, but she is keeping GMA purposefully small. Today, the company sales average $15 million annually with about 35 electricians and an office staff of four.

“We try to keep [bids] at $1 million or below,” she said. “I find there’s a comfort level.”

No matter where she is, Gina is likely to be in the minority among the men of the electrical industry. That didn’t bother her when she began the job as a teenager and it doesn’t bother her now. If anything, she finds there is a significant advantage to being in the minority.

“I find I’m lucky to be here in a time when it’s unusual to be doing what I’m doing,” Addeo said.

GMA’s designation as a WBE has brought her more work. And as far as other electricians and construction people go, even the “tough” ones, she said. “I found they treated me more as a niece or a sister or a cousin.

Everyone I have dealt with has been encouraging. [Being female] has only been positive.”

GMA wiring is installed in all five boroughs of New York. Some recent installations include a fire alarm upgrade at Verizon in the Bronx,

GMA has also wired lighting, power, telecommunications and security for American Airlines at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports. In the past year, ADCO has had its hands in some of New York City’s larger projects, including Steiner Studios, Queens; the Brooklyn Navy Yard; the Associated Press on 33rd St. in Manhattan; Bank of America on Broadway; USTA, Flushing, Queens; Lehman Brothers, 6th Ave.; and Deutsche Bank, Park Ave. Despite her unique career path, she is still modest, according to those who work with her. Some, such as Mike Miglino, vice president at ADCO, recalled her since her youth, working with her father in the contracting business. Much of what she learned came from her early years at that company, everything from routing cable to working with union negotiations and accounts payable. Usually surrounded by her male counterparts, Addeo is comfortable in that setting.

“She has their respect,” Miglino said, in large part because of her professionalism. “I think it would not take a long time in any conversation with her—especially in a technical conversation about a job or the global industry—to know she is a real professional.”

Addeo said there never was a master plan for her life, and she still doesn’t have one.

“It’s been one small goal to the next small goal,” she said. Throughout each goal, Gina’s father has “stood back and let me do it on my own.” He has allowed her to learn from experience. “Believe me, there’s no better experience than making mistakes,” she said.

In 1998, Addeo earned the National Electrical Contractors Association’s (NECA) leadership award that is given to women in the industry. She is now vice president of the New York City chapter of NECA. She is also a member of Professional Women in Construction, the Women Presidents’ Organization and serves on the New York City Department of Small Businesses advisory committee. One of the tasks she enjoys most is being entertainment chairperson for her local NECA chapter where she helps put on the chapter-wide annual dinner-dance.

Bloggers and Webcomic Artists:

Careers in Online Creativity

T

he expansion of the Internet has created many new opportunities for people to share their talents. Many people share just for fun—but some do it for fun and money. Online, these artists can reach a global audience. The rapid growth of online media excites many people working in the field.

“There are a billion new opportunities that weren’t there 5 years ago,” says Greg Wyshynski, editor of hockey blog Puck Daddy.

This article describes careers for digital media workers. The first section focuses on two online occupations: bloggers and webcomic artists. The second section discusses why bloggers and webcomic artists enjoy their work and some of the challenges that they face. A final section suggests sources for more information. And the box on page 20 provides tips for developing your own blog or webcomic.

Jobs in Digital Media

The growth of the Internet and the availability of simple Web publishing tools have made it easy to share content online. Many people create websites as a hobby or as a way to share news with family and friends.

Artists—including photographers, writers, filmmakers, and musicians—put their work online in the hopes of attracting attention and building a following. These artists enjoy sharing their creations with people around the world.

Some artists, however, are able to make a living creating content for their websites.

Workers in the occupations covered in this article, bloggers and webcomic artists, produce online content as their primary source of revenue. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has no employment or wage data for bloggers or webcomic artists. Their wages vary significantly depending on their employer and the size of their audience.

Bloggers

Bloggers are writers who regularly post content on a Web log, or blog. These blog posts can be of any length and on any topic.

Some bloggers post many times a day; others post less frequently. In their posts, bloggers occasionally use other media and content that aren’t possible in print. Cooking blogs might include instructional videos of cooking techniques, for example, or news blogs provide interactive maps. Bloggers can be self-employed, employed by print media or other companies, or work as contractors.

Depending on their interests, selfemployed bloggers write on a number of

topics, such as offering financial advice or reviewing restaurants. They have complete creative control over their own content and set their own schedules. Most selfemployed bloggers make money through advertising on their websites. The amount of money they make from ads depends on the number of times people visit their website, called traffic.

As traffic increases, advertisers pay bloggers more. Well-known bloggers may also make money through sponsorships, book or product sales, and speaking fees.

When employed by traditional print media companies, such as newspapers and magazines, bloggers may write for both print and online editions. For example, Brier Dudley, technology blogger for The Seattle Times, writes a weekly column in addition to his regular blog entries. According to Dudley, the tone of his blog differs from that of his column. “Blog items tend to be more conversational and casual,” he says.

Bloggers who work for newspapers or magazines are more like traditional journalists than are self-employed bloggers. News bloggers receive guidance from editors who review their posts. And like traditional journalists, news bloggers need to be ready to write whenever news occurs. Many readers turn to the Internet for breaking news, so bloggers often race to be the first to post news. “You’re like a doctor on call at all times,” says Wyshynski.“You have to be on the story first.”

Some bloggers work on a contract basis, not as employees of news media companies. These contractors usually write for online news websites that publish posts from many bloggers. Like news bloggers, these contractors submit their posts to editors for review. They are usually paid per post, similar to freelance reporters. Many contract bloggers write for several different sites to increase their income. They may also earn bonuses for writing posts that attract particularly high traffic.

Skills and training. As professional writers, bloggers must be excellent communicators and need to understand what content most appeals to their audiences. Bloggers also have to be disciplined to produce highquality research and writing, while trying to meet deadlines or to post breaking news.

Bloggers employed by newspapers usually have a journalism degree or previous newspaper experience. Some contract bloggers have journalism degrees, but it is not a requirement. Like freelance journalists, contract blogger’s posts are judged on their own merit.

There are no formal education requirements for selfemployed bloggers. However, self-employed bloggers are usually experts in the field they blog about. They previously may have worked in a job related to their blog’s topic. For example, a professional blogger who runs a home decorating blog may have experience with many different decorating or remodeling techniques.

Bloggers who are self-employed or who work with a small staff usually need experience with multimedia tools. Newspapers may have photographers and video editors on staff, but many bloggers lack these resources and produce the photos and videos themselves.

“A lot of online media isn’t just about being talented as a writer or a journalist,” says Wyshynski. “You might have to shoot and edit your own video and audio.”

Webcomic artists

Although most comic artists work for newspaper syndicates or comic book companies, webcomic artists post their strips for readers online. Some webcomic artists post new strips daily; others post less frequently.

Creating a widely read webcomic requires more than excellent artwork. Webcomic artists must also write scripts for their strips before they begin drawing. In some webcomics, called one-shots, each strip is a selfcontained story. Other webcomics are serials, which have long-running plots and regularly occurring characters.

For webcomic artists, developing a good script can be a quick or lengthy process. Sometimes, inspiration strikes early in the creative process, and they get an idea for a script immediately. Other times, webcomic artists may spend hours—or more—struggling to craft a script that their audiences will enjoy.

Webcomic artists may turn to outside influences for inspiration when they’re having difficulty writing a script. For example, Tim Buckley, artist of Ctrl + Alt + Del, frequently uses video game humor in his comic.

To find ideas, Buckley researches what new games are scheduled to be released and what issues are of interest to the gaming community. He also draws inspiration from his personal life. “I’ve gotten many ideas from interactions with my friends and family,” he says.

After they’ve written the script for a strip, webcomic artists begin drawing. All artists have their own style.

Some draw highly detailed characters and landscapes; others use a minimalist style. Many webcomics are in full color, but some artists prefer to work in black and white. Depending on the complexity of the artwork, drawing a strip may take anywhere from a few minutes to many hours.

Tips for Developing Your Own Blog or Webcomic Creating a popular blog or webcomic takes both hard work and luck.

Here are some tips to help you be successful.

Find your niche.

There are already many blogs and webcomics online. To distinguish yours, develop your own style or become an expert in a specific subject matter. If your content is unique and entertaining, casual browsers are more likely to become regular readers. To cultivate a group of fans, it may be beneficial to limit your scope. For example, if you want to write a blog of restaurant reviews, you might focus on restaurants in your local area or on a specific type of cuisine.

Update regularly.

The more frequently you add content, the more often regular readers will come back to your website. If you post several times a day, regular readers might check the site multiple times, increasing your web traffic. This doesn’t mean that you must update the website constantly. But if you have a published update schedule, such as one new comic strip a week, stick to it. If readers see that you’re not following your own schedule, they might stop visiting your site.

Engage your audience.

Communicate with your readers through e-mail, message boards, or social media. If your audience feels personally invested in your blog or webcomic, they’re more likely to read it regularly and support you financially. And the more you understand your audience, the better you’ll be able to create content and products that appeal to them.

Search for revenue.

Find creative ways to make money. If your blog or webcomic attracts a large audience, you can make money through advertising. However, even a smaller group of dedicated readers can be profitable. Dedicated readers are more likely to financially support your blog or webcomic, either through donations or product purchases.

comic artists have to find alternative sources of revenue. Like bloggers, many webcomics make money through advertisements. Webcomic artists also earn money from selling products, such as t-shirts and compilation books of their comics, to fans.

When they’re not planning or drawing comic strips, webcomic artists are frequently creating new products to sell to fans. According to Jeph Jacques, artist of Questionable Content, coming up with good products can be a challenge. “Coming up with a t-shirt design is like making a comic,” he says. “It can be quick, but it usually takes a long time.”

Webcomic artists are able to communicate directly with readers, which allows them to understand which products and scripts appeal most to their audience. Many webcomic artists spend part of their day replying to email from fans. Some webcomics also have message boards that allow artists to communicate with their fans. To share information with readers, webcomic artists sometimes write personal blogs on their websites.

Many webcomic artists also connect with readers by meeting them at conventions.

Artists may travel to conventions to speak on panels and interact with fans and peers.

Many artists also bring their products to conventions, where they can sell their merchandise directly.

Skills and training. Not all webcomic artists are formally trained. In fact, many are self-taught and have refined their artwork through years of practice. The artwork of different webcomics varies widely, and practice is essential for each artist to develop a unique style. Excellent artwork alone does not ensure success as a webcomic artist; artists also must write scripts that appeal to their audience. To improve their scripts, many artists

These skills help artists evaluate companies to find the right manufacturer for their products, to price merchandise, and to complete tax forms for their small businesses.

In response to the increasing use of RSS feeds, bloggers and webcomic artists are searching for new ways to make money while continuing to put their content online for free.

Despite these challenges, many bloggers and webcomic artists are passionate about sharing their work directly with readers. “Even if I couldn’t make the living I do,” says Buckley, “I’d still want to do this because I enjoy it so much.”

Rewards and Challenges

Sharing content online is often rewarding.

Bloggers and webcomic artists can gain a global audience for their work, and they frequently develop close relationships with their fans. Unlike traditional media, digital media workers who post online can communicate directly with readers from all over the world.

“You can get feedback instantly,” says Dudley.

“And you’re having a conversation with people everywhere.”

Self-employed bloggers and webcomic artists enjoy having control over their work and making their own decisions. They set their own schedules and write or draw without supervision. “I have the freedom to work and to write stories and jokes that entertain me,” says Buckley.

But establishing a popular blog or webcomic is difficult. New blogs and webcomics face competition from an immense crowd of previously existing sites. With so many competitors, new sites struggle to stand out. Even the best blog or webcomic may never be read by an audience large enough to make it profitable.

frequently develop and maintain their websites as side projects while working full time in another job. If the website becomes profitable, then it might turn into a full-time job. But building a large audience usually takes a while. “You have to be willing to be poor,” warns Jacques. “There aren’t any instant millions.”

Bloggers and webcomic artists constantly search for ways to monetize the work they put online. Even online advertising, the most common way to make money, isn’t a guaranteed source of revenue anymore. Cardiovascular technologists and technicians assist physicians in diagnosing and treating cardiac (heart) and peripheral vascular (blood vessel) ailments.

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians schedule appointments, review physicians’ interpretations and patient files, and monitor patients’ heart rates. They also operate and care for testing equipment, explain test procedures, and compare findings to a standard to identify problems. Other day-to-day activities vary significantly between specialties.

Technologists may specialize in different areas of practice: invasive cardiology, noninvasive—which includes echocardiography—or vascular technology. Technicians specialize in electrocardiograms and stress testing.

Invasive cardiology. Cardiovascular technologists specializing in invasive procedures are called cardiology technologists. They assist physicians with cardiac catheterization procedures in which a small tube, or catheter, is threaded through a patient’s artery from a spot on the patient’s groin to the heart. The procedure can determine whether a blockage exists in the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle or help to diagnose other problems.

Some of these procedures may involve balloon angioplasty, which can be used to treat blockages of blood vessels or heart valves without the need for heart surgery. Cardiology technologists assist physicians as they insert a catheter with a balloon on the end to the point of the obstruction. Catheters are also used in electrophysiology tests, which help locate the specific areas of heart tissue that give rise to the abnormal electrical impulses that cause arrhythmias.

Technologists prepare patients for cardiac catheterization by first positioning them on an examining table and then shaving, cleaning, and administering anesthesia to the top of their leg near the groin. During the procedures, they monitor patients’ blood pressure and heart rate with EKG equipment and notify the physician if something appears to be wrong.

Some cardiology technologists also prepare and monitor patients during open-heart surgery and during the insertion of pacemakers and stents that open up blockages in arteries to the heart and major blood vessels.

Noninvasive technology. Technologists who specialize in echocardiography or

vascular technology perform noninvasive tests. Tests are called “noninvasive” if they do not require the insertion of probes or other instruments into the patient’s body.

For example, procedures such as Doppler ultrasound transmit high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body and then processes reflected echoes of the sound waves to form an image. Technologists view the ultrasound image on a screen and may record the image on videotape or photograph it for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician.

Echocardiographers. Technologists who use ultrasound to examine the heart chambers, valves, and vessels are referred to as cardiac sonographers, or echocardiographers. They use ultrasound instrumentation to create images called echocardiograms. An echocardiogram may be performed while the patient is either resting or physically active. Technologists may administer medication to physically active patients to assess their heart function. Cardiac sonographers also may assist physicians who perform other procedures.

Vascular technologists.

Technologists who assist physicians in the diagnosis of disorders affecting the circulation are known as vascular technologists or vascular sonographers. Vascular technologists complete patients’ medical history, evaluate pulses and assess blood flow in arteries and veins by listening to the vascular flow sounds for abnormalities, and assure the appropriate vascular test has been ordered. Then they perform a noninvasive procedure using ultrasound instruments to record vascular information such as vascular blood flow, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, cerebral circulation, peripheral circulation, and abdominal circulation. Many of these tests are performed during or immediately after surgery.

Vascular technologists then provide a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management.

Cardiographic technicians. Technicians who specialize in electrocardiography, or EKG, stress testing, and perform Holter monitor procedures are known as cardiographic or electrocardiograph (or EKG) technicians.

Technicians take EKGs, which trace electrical impulses transmitted by the heart, attach electrodes to the patient’s chest, arms, and legs, and then manipulate switches on an EKG machine to obtain a reading. An EKG is printed out for interpretation by the physician.

This test is done before most kinds of surgery or as part of a routine physical examination.

EKG technicians with advanced training perform Holter monitor and stress testing. For Holter monitoring, technicians place electrodes on the patient’s chest and attach a portable EKG monitor to the patient’s belt.

Following 24 or more hours of normal activity by the patient, the technician removes a tape from the monitor and places it in a scanner. After checking the quality of the recorded impulses on an electronic screen, the technician usually prints the information from the tape for analysis by a physician. Physicians use the output from the scanner to diagnose heart ailments, such as heart rhythm abnormalities or problems with pacemakers.

For a treadmill stress test, EKG technicians document the patient’s medical history, explain the procedure, connect the patient to an EKG monitor, and obtain a baseline reading and resting blood pressure. Next, they monitor the heart’s performance while the patient is walking on a treadmill, gradually increasing the treadmill’s speed to observe the effect of increased exertion.

Like vascular technologists and cardiac sonographers, cardiographic technicians who perform EKGs, Holter monitoring, and stress tests are known as “noninvasive” technicians.

Technologists who use ultrasound to examine the heart chambers, valves, and vessels are referred to as cardiac sonographers, or echocardiographers.

Work environment. Cardiovascular technologists and technicians spend a lot of time walking and standing. Heavy lifting may be involved to move equipment or transfer patients. Those who work in catheterization laboratories may face stressful working conditions because they are in close contact with patients with serious heart ailments. For example, some patients may encounter complications that have life-or-death implications.

Some cardiovascular technologists and technicians may have the potential for radiation exposure. However, exposure is kept to a minimum by strict adherence to radiation safety guidelines, such as wearing heavy protective aprons while conducting certain procedures.

In addition, those who use sonography can be at an increased risk for musculoskeletal disorders such as carpel tunnel syndrome, neck and back strain, and eye strain. However, greater use of ergonomic equipment and an increasing awareness will continue to minimize such risks.

Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average; technologists and technicians with multiple professional credentials, trained to perform a wide range of procedures, will have the best prospects.

Technologists and technicians generally work a 5-day, 40-hour week that may include weekends. Those in catheterization laboratories tend to work longer hours and may work evenings. They also may be on call during the night and on weekends.

Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement

Cardiovascular technologists typically need an associate degree for entry-level employment. Most employers also require a professional credential. Technicians also receive on-the-job training.

Education and training. The majority of cardiovascular technologists, vascular technologists, and cardiac sonographers complete a 2-year junior or community college program resulting in an associate degree. However, 4-year programs are increasingly available. The first year is dedicated to core courses and is followed by a year of specialized instruction in either invasive cardiovascular, noninvasive cardiovascular, or noninvasive vascular technology. Those who are qualified in an allied health profession need to complete only the year of specialized instruction.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) accredits cardiovascular technology education programs. In January 2009, there were 34 accredited programs. Similarly, those who want to study echocardiography or vascular sonography may also attend CAAHEP-accredited programs in diagnostic medical sonography. In 2009, there were 168 such accredited programs. Those who attend these accredited programs are eligible to obtain professional certification.

Unlike most other cardiovascular technologists and technicians, most EKG technicians are trained on the job by an EKG supervisor or a cardiologist. On-the-job training for EKG technicians usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Most employers prefer to train people already in the healthcare field—nursing aides, for example. students enrolled in 2-year programs to become technologists, working part time to gain experience and make contact with employers. For technicians who perform Holter monitoring on-the-job training may last around 18 to 24 months. One-year certification programs also exist for basic EKGs, Holter monitoring, and stress testing and can be an alternative to on-the-job training.

Licensure and certification. Credentialing is voluntary. However, it is the professional standard and most employers require credentialing. Credentialing for cardiovascular technologists is available from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Most credentials require that technologists complete an accredited education program to qualify to sit for credentialing examination. Continuing education is required in most cases to maintain certification. For specific requirements, contact the credentialing body.

Other qualifications. Cardiovascular technologists and technicians must be reliable, have mechanical aptitude, and be able to follow detailed instructions.

A pleasant, relaxed manner for putting patients at ease is an asset. They must be articulate as they must communicate technically with physicians and also explain procedures simply to patients.

Advancement. Technicians may advance to the technologist level of practice with supplemental formal education and credentialing.

Technologists can advance to higher levels of the profession as many institutions structure the occupation with multiple levels, each having an increasing amount of responsibility. Advancement may occur through multiple credentialing in more than one cardiovascular specialty or through work experience. Technologists may also advance into supervisory or management positions. Other possibilities include working in an educational setting or conducting laboratory work.

Employment

Employment change. Employment of cardiovascular technologists and technicians is expected to increase 24 percent through the year 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Demand will stem from the prevalence of heart disease and the aging population, because older people have a higher incidence of heart disease and other complications of the heart and vascular system.

Procedures such as ultrasound imaging and radiology are being performed more often as a replacement for more expensive and more invasive procedures. Due to advances in medicine and greater public awareness, signs of vascular disease can be detected earlier, creating demand for cardiovascular technologists and technicians to perform various procedures.

Employment of vascular technologists and echocardiographers will grow as advances in vascular technology and sonography reduce the need for more costly and invasive procedures. However, fewer EKG technicians will be needed, as hospitals train nursing aides and others to perform basic EKG procedures. Individuals trained in Holter monitoring and stress testing are expected to have more favorable job prospects than those who can perform only a basic EKG. The rules governing reimbursement by Medicare and Medicaid for medical procedures will affect the frequency of their use and demand for imaging technologists.

Job prospects. In addition to job growth, job openings for cardiovascular technologists and technicians will arise from replacement needs as individuals transfer to other jobs or leave the labor force.

Job prospects will be best for those with multiple professional credentials, trained to perform a wide range of procedures. Those willing to relocate or work irregular hours also will have better job opportunities.

It is not uncommon for cardiovascular technologists and technicians to move between the specialties within the occupation by obtaining certification in more than one specialty. Technologists with multiple credentials will be the most marketable to employers.

The lowest 10 percent earned less than $25,510, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $74,760. November 2012 Green construction has grown dramatically over the past few years. McGraw-Hill Construction estimated the value of green nonresidential building construction in the United States to be $3 billion in 2005.1 In 2010, McGraw-Hill placed the value between $43 billion and $54 billion, more than 14 times the value just 5 years earlier. The value grew despite a slump—the recession of 2007–09—in the overall construction market. McGraw-Hill estimates that by 2015 the green nonresidential building market will be worth between $120 billion and $145 billion. The construction of new, large projects, such as hospitals, office complexes, and federal buildings—increasingly built to green standards—will continue the growth of green construction.

As the size of the industry grows, so will its workforce. According to a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Booz Allen Hamilton study, green construction supported more than 1 million workers in the green construction industry between 2000 and 2008. USGBC projects this figure to rise to 3.3 million between 2009 and 20134—and these estimates of the green construction workforce do not include employment for suppliers of green building materials and products, an industry that should also experience increased growth as demand for their goods rises. Although, in the United States, the green construction workforce is still much smaller than the general construction workforce—estimated at 7.2 million workers in 2008—its growth has been considerable.

Although green building techniques are used in both residential and industrial construction, commercial construction is the largest player in the industry’s growth. Accordingly, this report focuses on the construction of green commercial and office buildings.

The report provides information on various career opportunities in green construction. The first section provides an overview of the green construction industry and common issues that designers and construction managers of green buildings must consider. The remainder of the report details occupations involved in the construction of green commercial and office buildings. The occupational information includes a description of job duties; the credentials needed to work in the occupation, such as education, training, certification, or licensure; and wages.

Going Green

Green construction has grown more commonplace because it is more than just an environmental movement: many companies prefer green buildings for financial reasons. According to a 2009 McGraw-Hill Construction survey of high-level executives in firms that own green buildings, 72 percent say that their firm participates in sustainability efforts to lower operating costs. In the same survey, the executives named lowered costs and energy savings as the primary drivers of sustainability. These financial benefits provide incentives to keep constructing green buildings.

Constructing a green building is not an easy process: there is no one way to accomplish this goal. Because of the diverse nature of green construction, designers and builders must have a comprehensive view of how the different parts of a building work together. Green build-

ing techniques can be grouped into five major categories, including the structure’s location, energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and onsite construction practices.

Location

A building’s location—or, more specifically, where it is in relation to where people who come to the location live—goes a long way toward determining how green the building is. Car emissions from people traveling to and from a building impose a significant environmental cost, and choosing an effective location can reduce this impact. For example, constructing an office in a suburban location may require employees to drive to work. If the office were built in an urban area instead, many employees could have a shorter commute or more options to use mass transit.

This calculation is true for other types of buildings, too. For example, locating a grocery store within walking distance of its targeted customers would cut down on the environmental impact of their travel. Urban planners with an awareness of green issues must decide the most environmentally efficient sites for new buildings. Locating construction near existing infrastructure reduces the need to build new roads.

The location of a new building can matter in other ways, too. The greenest construction sites make use of preexisting structures and onsite materials. Instead of tearing down a previously vacant building and erecting a new one, the original might be efficiently renovated to serve a fresh purpose.

The reuse of some sites, called brownfields, might be especially good for the environment.

Brownfields are abandoned facilities that can be difficult to redevelop because of environmental complications. An example of a brownfield site would be an old industrial plant that still contains harmful chemicals. The site’s developers could have the chemicals safely disposed of and the property redeveloped into an apartment complex, thereby removing a threat to the environment.

Redevelopers of brownfield sites need not act solely for altruistic reasons. They might see a financial boon in locating a building at the brownfield’s location or be encouraged by tax credits offered in some local communities for the redevelopment of brownfield sites.

Energy Efficiency

A building’s level of energy consumption is frequently a good indicator of how green the building is. Buildings use vast amounts of energy, for everything from keeping the lights on during late work hours to keeping the heat on during cold winter months. The U.S. Department of Energy reported that in 2006 commercial buildings were responsible for about 18 percent of all energy consumed in the United States. Because buildings consume so much energy, it is important for them to be energy efficient.

Architects and engineers who design green buildings use different techniques to maximize energy efficiency. One popular practice is daylighting, which is the use of natural light to illuminate a building. Sunlight is readily available during daytime hours, when many buildings

In many green buildings, recycled and renewable resources are commonly used. For example, both medium-density fiberboard and bamboo are green alternatives to traditional wood. Medium-density fiberboard is frequently considered a recycled product; many kinds are composed of recycled industrial wood trimmings. Bamboo, by contrast, is considered

Whether recycled or renewable products, the most environmentally efficient supplies are those obtained from local sources. The environmental costs of transporting building materials can be substantial. Heavy trucks burning fossil fuels and emitting carbon can make the transportation of even the greenest materials harmful to the environment.

Construction firms may undertake onsite practices to minimize a building project’s environmental impact. Construction firms dedicated to green practices implement strict recycling plans, in which materials that would normally be disposed of are identified and reused for new purposes. Many jurisdictions require construction companies to conduct waste stream audits to reduce wasted materials. Green construction firms routinely make use of preconsumer recycled content, which comes from the materials left over at the end of a construction job. Many common construction materials can be reused in other projects.

Recycled concrete, for example, is frequently used as gravel or the base layer for new roads.

Occupations in Green Construction

Many organizations, both national and local, offer training for green construction trades. The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), a not-for-profit foundation created to develop standardized construction training programs, has developed a

number of green training modules recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council and Green Building Certification Institute. The Laborers’ International Union of North America and the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) also have been heavily involved in developing training programs. Workers already proficient in their trade but looking to add green skills should check with a local NCCER sponsor or local employment, trade, or union centers for training opportunities.

Training in green practices is more important for some occupations than for others. For example, although the work of construction laborers might be different on a green construction site, these workers usually do not require much specialized training. Specialty trade workers—who need to be proficient in installing energy- and water-efficient appliances and who might use new techniques—usually require more. The design occupations, such as architects and engineers, require a considerable amount of education and training specific to green construction.

For each occupation discussed, job duties are listed, along with the necessary credentials, including education, training, certification, or licensure. Certification demonstrates competency in a skill or set of skills and is typically earned by passing an examination, gaining work experience, receiving training, or some combination of the three. Licensing is done by states and typically requires passing an examination and complying with eligibility requirements, such as a minimum level of education, work experience, or training, or completing an

These workers are required to evaluate both standard construction issues, such as the number of load-bearing columns required in a structure, and new ones, such as a building’s orientation to the sun. To make buildings that appeal to the masses, designers have to strike the correct balance between being attractive and being environmentally friendly.

Job Duties

Architects design buildings and other structures. They are responsible for the overall look of buildings, but an architect’s work goes far beyond appearance: Buildings also must be functional, safe, and economical, and must suit the needs of the people

Architects use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software and building information modeling technologies to design and manage projects. They often work closely with engineers, urban planners, interior designers, landscape architects, and other professionals. Architects spend a great deal of their time coordinating information from, and the work of, others engaged in the same project.

The work of architects is critical to determining how green a building is. For example, architects designing a green building might devise ways to maximize the building’s energy efficiency. To accomplish this, they might apply daylighting principles and design a building with large banks of windows that face the sun. Or because buildings consume significantly more energy as they grow in size, the architects might design a building with little extra space.

Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems. Their work requires them to consider many factors, from the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project to government regulations and environmental hazards. Electrical engineers develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of electrical equipment. They focus on the generation and supply of power and specialize in areas such as power systems engineering or electrical equipment manufacturing.

Electrical engineers frequently design the lighting systems of buildings. The importance of energy efficiency in green buildings places a premium on well-trained electrical engineers. For example, electrical engineers might work closely with architects to plan areas of a building where daylighting is the primary source of light. They may use sensors that automatically trigger traditional lighting only when the daylight is insufficient, thereby helping to reduce energy usage.

Landscape architects plan the location of roads and walkways and the arrangement of flowers, shrubs, and trees. They analyze the natural elements of a site, such as the climate, soil, drainage, vegetation, and slope of the land. Landscape architects also assess existing buildings, roads, walkways, and utilities to determine what

Mechanical engineers work on power-producing machines, such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. They also might work on machines that consume power, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material-handling systems, elevators and escalators, and industrial production equipment. Some mechanical engineers design tools that other engineers need for their work.

Mechanical engineers can specialize in many different types of equipment. When designing green buildings, they are consulted on any proposed equipment. Mechanical engineers specializing in air-conditioning systems, for example, would be able to provide valuable input on the strengths and weaknesses of different setups. They also might install systems to record and measure energy savings.

Urban planners develop long- and short-term plans for the use of land and the growth and revitalization of urban, suburban, and rural communities. They help local officials alleviate social, economic, and environmental problems by recommending locations for roads, schools, and other infrastructure. Urban planners also suggest zoning regulations for private property and work with developers to meet those regulations.

A Career As A Health Educator

mentor made the difference at the start of Thuy Vu’s career. If not for the encouragement of her mentor, Thuy wouldn’t have pursued the master’s degree that is critical to professional development in her field.

In her jobs at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Thuy coordinates and directs projects related to cancer research. The jobs overlap, with both focusing on analyzing data and sharing research results for preventing cancer and promoting good health.

Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies the type of work Thuy does as that of a health educator, her job tasks differ from most of the health educators she knows. Other health educators with whom Thuy collaborates have more direct interaction with patients than she does in her research-based work.

Job guidance from a mentor can be helpful. But it was especially important to Thuy, whose mentor helped her from the beginning to become involved in research and in promoting good health. I also have an MPH (master of public health) degree with training in the social and behavioral sciences. During grad school, I held a graduatestudent appointment that required a practicum (supervised, hands-on experience) at a cancer research center. I had been exposed to a lot of the MPH curriculum before grad school because of my job, but grad school brought together everything I’d already been doing and gave me the perspective to fully understand it.

The only reason I have my MPH is because of my mentor, Deb, who was the principal investigator of a research group I was part of. Deb made me understand the importance of having a graduate degree in this field. I had no interest in going back to school after college until she encouraged me to get my master’s.

What was your first job out of college?

I had a temporary job with a small accounting firm. The head of the firm was very helpful to me when I got an offer elsewhere for a full-time job. He took on a “big brother” role to help me with things like negotiating a salary and benefits.

The job itself didn’t necessarily influence my future career plans. But what was meaningful to me was having someone be so supportive even as I was leaving. I got that same kind of support, and more, from Deb later on.

What else led you to your current jobs?

Once, when I was almost finished with my bachelor’s, I was home on break and talking

about school. Someone asked what I was interested in, and I said, “Psychology.” After I got back to school, I wondered why I’d said that—I was a political science major and had taken only one psychology class. But I think I knew even then that I had an interest in understanding behavior.

And in the field, in my job, working in the community, the behavioral science part has been a critical piece. The hard part about science is that what works in research works in a vacuum. But interacting with other people is what’s illuminating and informative. It’s the human part that can really throw a wrench in the scientific data.

Any surprises along the way?

The piece that’s been most surprising to me is the value placed on mentoring in the academic research community. I’m humbled by the passion and seriousness of mentors, especially the degree of their dedication in helping younger researchers to grow. I’m where I am today because of Deb. Deb was a phenomenal mentor who took the nurturing of younger staff very seriously. I felt like I was such a priority in her life. Along with helping me develop in my career, she taught me to have confidence in myself, nurtured my interests, and counseled me. Deb really gave me opportunities that made me understand the world of research and working with communities.

The recession hasn’t slowed down Amazon one bit. In fact, quite the opposite. The company that Jeff Bezos launched as an online bookstore in 1995 has grown into a cyber merchant of every imaginable product.

Through 2010 and 2011, as the economy struggled to recover and analysts debated the likeliness of a “double dip” recession, Amazon posted record sales.

While profits dipped a bit in 2011 as Amazon invested heavily in the Kindle Fire – the tablet computer expected to give the iPad its first serious competition – and 17 new fulfillment centers, the company is focused on sustained, long-term growth. That translates to tens of thousands of jobs, and military talent tops the list of Amazon recruiters’ wish list.

DOD Increases Hiring of

he Defense Department’s hiring of wounded warriors and others with disabilities is on an uptick, the Pentagon’s director of disability programs said today.

Stephen M. King, whose office is part of diversity management and equal opportunity, spoke with American Forces Press Service about a recent Office of Personnel Management report that said 14 percent of the Defense Department’s civilian employees have disabilities, putting DOD in second place among cabinet-level agencies for disability hiring.

“There is a greater [applicant] pool, and more emphasis on hiring individuals with disabilities and wounded warriors through two executive orders in the last three years,” King said.

Veterans with disabilities bring values to DOD such as familiarity with military culture, proven leadership and the ability to enter the workforce and “perform on Day 1,” he said.

Additionally, hiring veterans and others with disabilities contributes to military readiness, King said. DOD will reap the benefits of those who have served by hiring them after their service, he added.

DOD and other agencies want to hire veterans with disabilities whether they were injured recently, have acquired a disability, or if the disability is

“We want … those abilities in DOD regardless of how long ago you were a veteran,” he said.

“For any organization to be its best, you really have to take advantage of and value what everyone brings to the table: their background, knowledge, skills and abilities,” he said.

People with disabilities face unique challenges, King noted. “We need that type of problem-solving ability and skill in the workplace,” he said.

“It is awesome when you get to talk to someone who [wore] a uniform and tells you the difference that you’ve made as an organization by allowing [him] to continue to serve his country but in a different capacity,” King said.

The upward trend in DOD’s disability hiring stems from several initiatives and programs, King said.

“There is a renewed focus within DOD and the federal government on utilizing existing hiring flexibility, [such as] hiring individuals with disabilities noncompetitively,” he said.

Numerous hiring programs include the Hiring Heroes job fairs and the Veterans Hiring Initiative, which seeks out veterans and transitioning service members.

DOD also recruits young people with disabilities as they are about to graduate from more than 250 colleges and universities that participate in the

Workforce Recruitment Program, which DOD co-sponsors with the Labor Department, King said The goal of the program is to create a database for federal agencies to meet their disability hiring targets, he said.

To further its goals, DOD also is working with human resources policies and advisers so those with disabilities have the opportunity to become integrated into development and leadership programs.

“We want to focus on all types of positions and grade levels … to be inclusive of individuals with all types of disabilities,” he said.

King’s office is working toward getting new employees to disclose their disability information so the department can accurately give them what they need to do their jobs, such as assisted technology.

Such technology runs the gamut, King said, from screen readers for the vision challenged to TTY machines for the deaf to braille keyboards and devices that help those with memory loss. Some wounded warriors have some memory loss due to traumatic brain injuries, he added.

“New technologies are being invented every single day,” King said.

“When you look at what we’re capable of providing in the workplace, with the right assistance, it’s actually quite phenomenal, and it’s only going to get better.”

The Role of the Process Server Elka Torpey

I

f Rebecca Reid is at your door, you might be in trouble. Legal trouble, that is. As a process server, it’s Rebecca’s job to hand deliver legal documents to the people involved in court cases.

These legal documents range from a summons to appear in court to a subpoena for producing evidence. How Rebecca does her job depends on the documents she serves. For example, divorce papers often must be delivered directly to the person named on the document; an eviction notice usually can be given to a person’s spouse. After delivery, she files a report—or proof of service— stating when, where, and how the document was delivered.

Service of process is required by law. Court rules usually prevent people who are associated with a case, such as a lawyer or another party to the case, from serving the documents. In some states, sheriffs serve them. For many cases, however, lawyers— or others who need papers served—hire a professional process server to do it.

Clients may contact self-employed process servers, like Rebecca, or hire someone through a company that specializes in process serving.

Process servers first meet with the client to discuss a single job or a series of deliveries and the date by which the documents must be served.

Then, they pick up the documents and, for some jobs, receive payment in advance.

Many of Rebecca’s jobs are straightforward: She visits people at their homes or businesses and gives them the papers. She also makes a note of

the person’s appearance and the date, time, and place of service. If someone refuses to accept the document, she simply explains what it is and drops it at the person’s feet.

Other jobs, however, are more complicated.

Some defendants, for example, don’t want to be found. “You have to be persistent and tenacious because you need to track people down,” says Rebecca.

If a defendant is particularly evasive, Rebecca might do a stakeout. First, to preempt phone calls from concerned neighbors, she lets the police department know what she is doing. Then, she waits and watches for the person to appear so she can give him or her the document.

This part of a process server’s work is often misunderstood. “People have the idea that we’re like bounty hunters, going after people with guns,” says Rebecca. “It just isn’t the case.”

Process servers’ only purpose is to deliver legal documents. And typically, after three unsuccessful attempts to visit a plaintiff or defendant, process servers resort to an alternate means of service, such as service by mail.

Process serving can involve risk, as some people take out their anger about the legal case on the person bringing them the bad news. But Rebecca typically avoids jobs that might threaten her safety. If a situation looks dangerous, she won’t deliver the papers.

Instead, she returns them to the client who hired her, along with the money she was paid to do the job.

and leaves the location as soon as she hands people the document. “If you’re respectful, people take the papers,” she says. “Sometimes they might scream obscenities at you, but that’s the worst thing that’s happened to me.”

In most states, there are no formal educational requirements to become a process server. Training courses are available through associations, colleges, and private firms. Some states require that workers be registered or licensed, which often includes a background check, and taking out a bond (which, for Rebecca, costs about $25 a year). Process servers also typically must be U.S. citizens, be at least 18 years old, and have no felony convictions.

Process servers must follow precise legal rules, so attention to detail is essential. For process servers who have their own business, sales skills are also important because they must sell their services to get jobs.

A process-serving business is easy to start. In addition to meeting state requirements, these workers usually need their own form of transportation. A computer, cell phone, and GPS device are also helpful. To protect them from liability, many process servers get errors and omissions insurance.

Rebecca learned about process serving when she was involved in a court case of her own. “I became friends with my attorney,” she says, “and when the case was over she asked me if I wanted to work for her.” After working for the attorney a short time, Rebecca went into business for herself.

People come to process serving from a variety of backgrounds. Some have worked— and may continue to work—in law enforcement or as private investigators. Others do tasks related to different kinds of legal work. For example, Rebecca provides support services to lawyers, including filing papers with the court. But she earns most of her income from process serving.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not collect employment or wage data specifically on process servers. Industry sources suggest that there are about 15,000 to 20,000 process servers in the United States, working both full and part time.

Earnings vary a lot, according to industry sources. Top earners may make more than $70,000 a year. But because process servers are usually paid by the job, those who take fewer jobs earn less. The fee for a standard service ranges from about $20 to $80, depending on geographic location and other factors. The rate is often higher for difficult or expedited service.

In addition to its flexibility, process serving offers opportunities for networking near and far. Laws about service vary by state, but a process server in one state can take a job serving someone in another with the help of a process server colleague there.

Networking extends beyond the work, too. “People lean on each other a lot,” says Rebecca. “There’s a real social network among process servers. It can be a lot of fun.”

urgical technologists, also called operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations. They prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and help doctors and nurses during surgeries.

Surgical technologists typically: • Prepare operating rooms for surgery • Sterilize equipment and make sure that there are adequate supplies for surgery • Prepare patients for surgery, such as washing and disinfecting incision sites • Help surgeons and nurses during surgery by passing them instruments and other sterile supplies Surgical technologists work as members of a healthcare team alongside physicians and surgeons, registered nurses, and other healthcare workers.

Before an operation, surgical technologists prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment. They also prepare patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites, positioning patients on the operating table, and covering patients with sterile drapes. Detail oriented. Surgical technologists must pay close attention to their work at all times. For example, they need to provide the correct sterile equipment for surgeons and nurses during an operation.

Dexterity. Surgical technologists should be comfortable working with their hands. They must be able to provide the needed equipment quickly.

Stamina. Surgical technologists should be comfortable standing for an extended period.

Stress-management skills. Working in an operating room can be stressful. Surgical technologists should be able to work well under pressure while providing a high level of care.

Certification

Certification can help a surgical technologist find a position. Surgical technologists earn certification through one of two credentialing organizations. Certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting allows the use of the title “Certified Surgical Technologist.” Certification through the National Center for Competency Testing allows the use of the title “Tech in Surgery-Certified.” Certification typically requires completing an accredited formal education program, passing an exam, and undergoing continuing education.

The National Healthcare Association (NHA) also offers the Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.

Candidates can complete an accredited training program, or have one year of experience working in the field. After passing the exam, individuals may use the designation Certified Operating Room Surgical Technician (CORST). A small number of states and the District of Columbia have regulations governing the work of surgical technologists. In these jurisdictions, surgical technologists must have graduated from an accredited education program and received certification.

ois Coles teaches algebra to eighth graders in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Each year she has her students talk to workers in careers that interest them, asking for examples of how they use math in their jobs. “It’s unbelievable,” says Coles. “The students ask everyone— from figure skaters to real estate agents, nurses, and airline pilots—and they all give us math problems.”

Math is used in many occupations. And, experts say, workers with a strong background in mathematics are increasingly in demand. “Employers are looking for math majors a lot more than they used to,” says Mike Breen of the American Mathematical Society. That equals prime opportunity for career-minded math enthusiasts.

This article describes how math factors into careers. The first section talks about some of the ways workers use math in the workplace. The second section focuses on three occupations that use math: cryptologists, health data analysts, and math teachers. A third section highlights reasons why workers enjoy their math-related careers and discusses some of their challenges.

The level of math needed in occupations ranges from basic calculations to complex mathematical theories. This type of information is usually kept secret by a computerized encryption scheme.

Cryptologists use their knowledge of math to create, to improve—and, sometimes, to break these encryptions.

Today, many encryptions are created with algorithms, sets of mathematical instructions that computers use to make information unreadable for people who don’t have the key.

Depending on their project, cryptologists rely on various types of math: abstract algebra, number theory, probability, statistics, and other specialties. Other job titles for cryptologists include cryptanalyst and cryptographer.

Cryptologists often write computer programs for the algorithms they are creating, refining, or trying to break. Most encryption algorithms are one of two types: symmetric key or asymmetric (public) key. In symmetric key encryption, the person encrypting the information and the person receiving that information use the same key for decryption.

Asymmetric-key encryption uses two different keys.

The need for two keys in public-key encryption increases its complexity. “The algorithms used for public-key cryptology tend to be very mathematical, relying on large prime numbers, exponentiation, or other concepts to prove they’re secure,” says Greg Rose, a cryptologist in San Diego, California.

Rose was working as a security engineer when he identified weaknesses in cell phone encryption algorithms. He used cryptology to develop a better way to encrypt the information. “It’s very exciting,” says Rose, “like solving puzzles.”

Unlike Rose, cryptologist Roger Barkan tries to break encryptions created by potential U.S. adversaries. His work for the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland, involves analyzing encrypted data to decipher this secret information.

To determine if an encryption can be broken, cryptologists like Barkan use statistical analysis to figure out which aspects of encrypted data are clues to solving the encryption—and which are merely coincidental. The results of their inquiry determine whether they design followup tests to look for additional clues.

For example, Barkan might look at an encrypted message and notice that the binary data contain more ones than zeros. His next step would be to use statistics to decide whether the number of ones and zeros is meaningful. This analysis helps Barkan to determine what the encryption scheme is or how the decrypted message may appear.

“Ultimately, a good cryptologist needs to be like a detective,” he says.

Another task cryptologists have is to ensure that algorithms are as effective as possible.

“There are plenty of algorithms out there that work,” says Rose, “but their efficiency is becoming more important.” For example, cryptologists may refine algorithms so that they take less time to complete and use less computer memory.

The encryption algorithms that cryptologists work on are used around the world to help keep information secure. “I’ve written a piece of math that millions of people use every day,” says cryptologist Bruce Schneier of Minneapolis, Minnesota. “That’s pretty cool.”

Employment, wages, and outlook. BLS does not collect data specifically on cryptologists. Many workers in this occupation are classified by BLS as mathematicians. In May

2011, BLS data show, there were 2,980 wage and salary mathematicians. These workers had a median annual wage of $101,040.

According to BLS, mathematicians are projected to add about 500 new jobs between 2010 and 2020. Many jobs related to national security are expected to have continued employment growth. Still, competition for cryptologist and other mathematician jobs is expected, given the relatively few number of available positions.

Workers may need to relocate to an area where major employers are based, such as near Washington, D.C. Most cryptologists work for the National Security Agency or other government intelligence agencies or in academia. Some large, multinational corporations also hire these workers, industry sources say. Many types of businesses—such as banks and cable companies—rely on cryptology to help keep information secure. Most of the encryption algorithms in use today have already been written, however, so the number of jobs with these organizations is small.

Preparation. Cryptologists need excellent math, computer programming, and problem solving skills. They

Most cryptologists need at least a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field to enter the occupation. For some positions, a master’s degree or Ph.D. is required. But sometimes, related experience can substitute for education.

For some entry-level government cryptologist positions, workers can have a college degree in a nontechnical field, such as music or history. These workers provide a different perspective when helping to analyze encryptions—and, like other government cryptologists, they usually receive on-the-job training and take classes in subjects related to their work.

Cryptologists who work for the U.S. government must pass a security background investigation and a polygraph test. An internship with a federal agency that employs cryptologists is helpful for gaining experience and contacts in the field.

Thanks to the work of health data analysts, math provides answers that help people make informed healthcare decisions. Health data analysts collect, manage and analyze healthcare information. They use this information to identify ways to lower costs and improve services.

Some health data analysts perform mathematical calculations to better understand how a healthcare facility functions. Ellen Berkowitz, a senior health data analyst in Toledo, Ohio, produces reports that compare her hospital’s care with that of established best practice standards. She may calculate how long it typically takes for a patient to receive an electrocardiogram (EKG), for example, or calculate the percentage of heart failure patients readmitted within 30 days. Then, depending on the results, Berkowitz tries to identify areas for improvement and reports the data in executive summaries, graphs, and other presentations.

Other health data analysts use statistics to establish connections between healthcare experiences and patients’ results—and to make predictions about the future. Analysts like Chet Deshmukh of Apex, North Carolina, for example, may do a regression analysis to determine which factors are most likely to affect stroke patients’ rehabilitation and recovery times. “You start to connect the dots to envision certain patterns and trends,” says Deshmukh. “You take information specific to one person and try to connect it to the overall population.”

Health data analysts’ jobs vary by employer and position. Analysts who work for insurance companies, for example, may develop predictive models to help the company determine ways to save costs by encouraging at-risk plan members to take preventive measures.

Most health data analysts work with electronic health records to compile and analyze data. Some analysts transfer data from paperbased to electronic records. Others set up systems for entering health data. Still others specialize in helping their organization meet data collection and reporting requirements.

Workers other than health data analysts also study health data. Medical records and health information technicians, for example, organize and manage data related to patient care. Healthcare administrators, nurses, and case managers sometimes analyze health information. And many statisticians, epidemiologists, and medical scientists focus on interpreting medical and health data.

Employment, Wages and Outlook.

BLS does not collect data specifically on health data analysts. Some of the duties of health data analysts are similar to those of medical records and health information technicians. BLS data show that in May 2011 wage and salary medical records and health

Four Occupations in which Math is Prime

ome workers specialize in mathematics—or a particular branch of it. These workers include actuaries, mathematicians, operations research analysts, and statisticians. The table shows BLS wage and employment data for each of these occupations.

Read the detailed profiles for these four occupations, listed under math occupations in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, at www.bls.gov/ooh/math/home.htm.

Actuaries Sometimes called actuarial analysts, actuaries use mathematical models to analyze statistical data and to forecast risk. They help develop, price, and evaluate products related to health insurance, life insurance, property and casualty insurance, or pension and retirement benefits.

Actuaries typically need a bachelor’s degree in a discipline such as mathematics, statistics, business, or actuarial science. Computer programming skills are also important. To become fully qualified, actuaries must pass a series of exams, but workers need not have passed all of these exams before being hired. Employers often pay for the exams and allow time on the job to study for them.

Mathematicians These workers advance mathematical knowledge and solve problems using high level mathematics and technology. They explore new mathematical theories and ideas in specific areas of math, such as geometry, number theory, or logic. And they look for ways to apply mathematical principles to disciplines like engineering or science.

Cryptologists, described in greater detail above, are a type of mathematician.

Mathematician jobs typically require a master’s degree in mathematics, but many workers have a Ph.D. Some jobs are available for workers with a bachelor’s degree.

Operations Research Analysts To help organizations solve problems and improve decision making using mathematical models, operations research analysts collect and study information from databases and other sources. They use their analyses to make recommendations related to production, sales, logistics, or other areas of operation.

To enter the occupation, workers must know how to use advanced statistical and database software. In addition, they typically need a bachelor’s degree in operations research, management science, or a related field. Degrees in mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, or other technical fields are also common. Many employers prefer to hire people who have a master’s or higher degree.

Statisticians Statisticians collect and interpret data using a variety of statistical methods and theories. They design surveys and other methods for gathering data representative of a population. Statisticians also identify trends in data, draw conclusions, and assess whether their results are reliable.

These workers typically need a master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, or survey methodology. But a bachelor’s degree is sufficient for some entry-level jobs. A Ph.D. usually is required for academic or research jobs. Statisticians need computer programming skills and use statistical software to analyze data.

Some teachers focus only on math. Others, especially those who work with younger students, teach more than one subject. Math teachers may specialize in education for specific groups, such as elementary, postsecondary, or adult literacy and GED students.

Because students learn in different ways, math teachers often use a variety of techniques to present concepts. For example, some concepts may be explained using words and graphs along with numbers. Coles and other math teachers combine two or more approaches to reach out to all types of learners. “My kids get it,” Coles says. “One way or another, they get it.”

Employment, wages, and outlook. BLS does not collect data on math teachers separately. Instead, BLS counts math teachers among other types of teachers.

There were more than 3 million wage and salary elementary, middle, and high school teachers in May 2011, according to BLS. Adult literacy and GED teachers accounted for about 68,000 additional wage and salary jobs. And postsecondary mathematical science teachers held about 54,000 wage and salary jobs.

Median annual wages in May 2011 ranged from $47,370 for adult literacy and GED teachers to $66,680 for postsecondary mathematical science teachers.

Teachers typically work during a 10-month academic year, with 2 months off in the summer.

According to BLS, the job outlook for teachers varies by region of employment and the level of education that they teach. Altogether, teachers are projected to add more than 700,000 new jobs between 2010 and 2020. And because math is a subject for which many schools report difficulty finding qualified instructors, math teachers are expected to have better job prospects than other types of teachers.

Most math teachers work in public or private elementary, middle, and high schools. Others teach at the college level. Some, like Midamba, work for communitybased organizations.

There’s a lot to like about jobs that use math. “For something that many people tend to think of as boring, mathematics is actually really exciting,” says cryptologist Rose.

Finding opportunities to share that excitement with others attracts workers to these jobs. “Math is something I like,” says Midamba, “and it’s rewarding for me to be able to show students that math isn’t scary and that they’re smart enough to do it.”

Career satisfaction starts early for math workers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics Baccalaureate and Beyond Study, math majors in 2009 reported higher levels of satisfaction with the challenge of their work 1 year after graduation than many other majors, including those in engineering and engineering technology, computer and information sciences, business, social sciences, and biological or physical sciences.

Studying math often pays off right away: math majors have starting salaries that are higher than college graduates in many other disciplines.

BLS data show that math occupations (actuaries, mathematicians, operations research analysts, and statisticians) had median annual wages that were more than double the $34,460 median annual wage for all occupations in May 2011. And other occupations that require advanced math skills—such as physicists, engineers, and computer scientists—also had very high median annual wages: often close to or greater than $100,000.

But those personal and financial rewards are usually the result of hard work and study. Most math-intensive jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree. Others require a master’s degree or Ph.D.

November 2012 And even after years of study, finding the answers to practical or theoretical problems in math isn’t always easy. Health data analyst Deshmukh says it’s frustrating when predictions don’t always hold true and data quality isn’t always optimal.

On the other hand, says Barkan, time spent on a mathematical inquiry or analysis can be gratifying in the end: “The extreme difficulty of our problems makes our achievements that much more satisfying when we accomplish them.”

Being A Medical Aesthetician

ichele Taylor works in a hospital, and patients in her charge sometimes fall asleep. But she’s not a nurse and doesn’t administer anesthesia. So, as Michele herself often must clarify, she’s not an anesthetist—she’s an aesthetician.

Aestheticians are licensed skincare specialists. They treat facial skin to maintain and improve its appearance. Medical aestheticians, like Michele, work with patients whose skin or appearance is affected by trauma or medical procedure, such as surgery. In the integrative-medicine program where she works, Michele also offers stress reduction and relaxation. It’s during these treatments that patients are most likely to drift off. “I do put people to sleep, but not with anesthesia,” she says. “Some people just get so relaxed, they fall asleep.”

Anxiety reduction is a large part of Michele’s job because of where she works: in a Cleveland hospital’s radiation oncology department. Cancer patients who call Michele to schedule an appointment find out about the services available. Then, Michele asks them questions to help them identify their needs. “Do they want relaxation? To feel better about themselves? Some people start out not really knowing,” she says. “With chemo patients, for example, all they know is they’ve lost their hair, their eyebrows, their eyelashes—it can be very stressful for them.”

Patients who want to enhance their appearance spend about an hour with Michele, learning how to choose and apply appropriate makeup colors and products. The products they start with are usually colorless. “I’m teaching them how to take care of their skin,” says Michele, “so cleansing and moisturizing are always first.” This is especially important instruction for patients undergoing treatments such as radiation, which sometimes causes skin irritation.

Next comes foundation. Michele shows patients how to choose products for their skin types and to select the best matches from a variety of colors. Then, she applies foundation to one side of the face, explaining technique as she goes. The entire process—color choice, application, technique explanation—is repeated for the eyes, cheeks, and lips.

Only after the patient is satisfied with the results, even if it means removing the makeup and starting over, are they duplicated on the other side of the face. Lastly, Michele applies finishing powder and suggests complementary colors for clothing.

In the basics of skincare and makeup application, Michele’s job is similar to that of most other aestheticians. But helping patients apply makeup after medical treatment presents special challenges, she says. For example, chemotherapy patients must learn how to measure their natural browline so that they can draw eyebrows to replace the ones lost to treatment. And hair that has fallen out sometimes grows back in a different color, affecting the choices for makeup colors that patients might consider.

Still, Michele leaves final decision making to each patient. “I make suggestions, but I go with what people feel comfortable with,” she says. “I want them to feel healthy.” Letting patients make their own decisions serves another purpose, too. “An illness or injury can make people feel like they lose control,” says Michele. “Teaching them about makeup and skincare gives them some control, over how they look and how they maintain their skin.” Although women are the only ones who request makeovers, they’re not the only patients Michele sees. Facials are popular with men, who, Michele says, “are more concerned about their skin than many people realize.” And adults and children alike enjoy her

M

any young executives like to ask for career success tips. I usually start by saying career success doesn’t come in a day. Yet, day-in day-out I see young people entering the working life pushing themselves as if they will make CEO in a year. They have a tendency to compare their progress with their contemporaries. You should not and must not compare your career success to your contemporaries.

If you ask me, what is career success? Frankly, I don’t have the answer. But, I can give you a career success tip that works for me.

However, ultimately only you can answer “what is career success?” because only you can seek. No one can do it for you. It is to be defined by your own values and principles in life. You would have to define what is career success for yourself.

It means different things for different people. And it is your career goals.

The first step is to ask yourself “What is career success?”. It is not a question you should mull over daily. You will have to spend time thinking about this. The answer will not come easy. Ask yourself that question, and then let it float in your mind for however long it takes - never force the answer.

Remind yourself this - if your career is a marathon, then it includes the preparation for the race - the warm ups, the stretches, the strength exercises, the stamina building, the constant practice runs. Constant effort is what will eventually get a positive response. And that response is success.

My biggest fear looking at many young first job executives is that a lot of them embark on this marathon and end up hurting themselves. They hurt themselves because instead of warming up and stretching, they sprint. Eventually they end up injured, taking months and years to recuperate.

This is an important career success tip. Your career like many things in life cannot

be rushed. You succeed by not rushing nor lazing off.

Your career success comes to you when you do not rush yourself through it. But this also means you do not laze off. When you rush you start to be careless.

You forget the basic important steps in the race for your career success. If you sprint through at this early phase, you risk overdoing it. On the other hand, if you laze off – you won’t put in the appropriate effort needed for success. For success to happen, you need to be moderate in your pursuit. That would be career success tip for you. There is a saying: Hurrying makes things too tight, Slacking off lets things get too loose, By not hurrying and not slacking off, We can succeed at what we do.

4 Ways to Pursue Your Passion

I

n the ideal world we’d all be able to pursue our passions and make tons of money doing that. I know that doesn’t always happen. The reality is that at times we have to be practical when it comes to the jobs we choose and other career decisions we make.

Early in our careers, it doesn’t seem like such a big deal. We’re happy to get a job that pays decently, uses our college degree or career training in which there is a reasonable chance for advancement. We’re able to pay rent, save some money, get a car and life is good. Then, we arrive at a point, maybe 10- 15 years into a career, and wonder how we got there and what else is out there. This wondering can be prompted by the realization that our salary isn’t aligned with our experience and training, we got passed over for a promotion or on overall feeling of boredom. For whatever reason, we’re no longer as passionate as when we started, and the work we’re doing doesn’t really meet our needs anymore.

It’s at this point that people start to re-evaluate their career progress. They take a look at their situation- evaluate their finances, lifestyle, retirement savings and determine they need to make a certain amount of money in order to maintain their lifestyle. The unfortunate part, they feel, is that pursuing a career they can be passionate about might not satisfy their practical needs now or ever. They feel stuck.

Some would argue that if you pursue your career passions, everything else will fall into place to support it. That may be true to an extent, but many of us aren’t willing to take that risk. When kids’ education, mortgages and bills are involved it seems almost frivolous and selfish to pursue a passion.

I love my career, but over the years have encountered challenges and setbacks like any other professional. I’ve been in work settings that weren’t a fit and worked on projects outside of my scope of interest. I’ve lost contracts and had salary cuts. Each time, I’ve made it through but not without effort and support. If you’re feeling stuck in your career and dream of pursu-

ing something more satisfying, keep reading for my suggestions based on what I did to get back my career back on track.

Adjust your attitude

We all have moments when we think things just aren’t happening like we want them to, or that our career isn’t progressing well. It seems everyone around us is experiencing amazing results in their career and moving right along with life. Dwelling on the unfairness of it all can lead to anger, frustration and a lack of clarity.

These negative attitudes diminish your ability to be objective. It’s at the moments when we feel most frustrated that creativity can kick in.

Some of the best solutions emerge from a desire for change and improvement. You don’t have to deny your feelings of disappointment, but this state of dissatisfaction has to be viewed a temporary state if you’re to get back on track.

Do something about your situation

Evaluate your progress, set a goal and make some plans. If you’re not where you want to be in your life and career, ask yourself where you do want to be and brainstorm what you can do to get there. Will updating your skills generate more career options? Can you pursue your passion work in your free time? Can you take on contract work to generate more income and expand your skill set? Are there viable opportunities outside of your field you can transition into? Do some investigation to see what’s out there for you. Talk with other people to get ideas, insight and feedback. Then create a realistic action plan for achieving your goals and take action.

Connect with others

When you are of service to others and take the focus off yourself the result is satisfaction. You are using your skills, interests, and knowledge to improve the lives of others. You don’t have to serve the poor and needy to make a positive contribution. I volunteer for my alumni association and for a local business organization. Those

are two constituent groups I feel connected to, and I give 100% to my volunteer efforts. In turn, I have made good friends, launched some major projects, and honed some important skills while providing value. Volunteering and pursuing interests are great ways to get some perspective and have fun.

Be honest and ask for help

When things aren’t going well, we all have the tendency to hide the truth. If you hide behind a façade people will assume everything is good and won’t extend opportunities or suggestions.

Countless times I’ve had people tell me about great opportunities, then discount my interest assuming I was too busy to participate. The reality was that I definitely could have used the business It’s important to keep in mind that while it may feel like you’re alone in this situation, you’re not the first person to hit a snag in your career. If you’re honest with people, you’d be surprised at how sympathetic and even helpful they can be.

I’m not talking about whining and complaining.

I’m talking about admitting that things are not going as well as you’d like, but you’re working on improving them. It’s even better if you have some clarity about your aspirations.

It’s been my experience that pursuing passion is often a balancing act rather than an either/or proposition.

While most planners offer advice on a range of financial topics, some specialize in areas such as retirement and estate planning.
