ecently I have found myself thinking about the concept of confidence. As a relatively intelligent person, I have reasonable confidence in my abilities at work and the value that I provide to the people around me. But I’ve been wondering if confidence is something people are born with, or if it’s something that one can improve. What I found in my research is that you can improve your confidence level if you want to, around anything at all. If you feel you would like to improve your confidence at work for example, there are a few things that can help: 1. Pay attention to the things you do well and the things that you like about yourself. Keep a list and refer to it when you need a boost. 2. Notice your strengths. Pay attention to how you were able to display those strengths throughout the day. 3. Keep a positive attitude. Instead of using the word “problem,” for example, consider exchanging it for the word “challenge.” It’s such a simple thing, but challenges can be overcome. Problems have a more negative connotation. 4. Confidence comes from knowing what you’re good at and being able to convey that to others. Don’t pretend to understand something when you don’t. Ask for help, learn about what you don’t know and start building your confidence from there. All in all, most of this advice centers around one theme: making you feel better about doing things you’re good at or who you are, all while keeping a positive outlook. There’s no surefire pattern that will make you 100% confident overnight, but if you work at it, it can pay off.

6 Ways to Celebrate a Soldier on Armed Forces Day

Take your career to new altitudes
E
ach year on the third Saturday of May, we take the time to honor the service of our military men and women for Armed Forces Day. The holiday was implemented in 1949 by President Harry S. Truman in order to celebrate members of every section of the military, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. This year, Armed Forces Day falls on Saturday May 16, so if you have friends or family members who served in the military (or who are still serving), it’s the perfect day to show them how much their service means to you. Not sure how to honor military men and women this year? Take a look at these six ideas: 1. BAKE A SPECIAL TREAT
For any soldiers or veterans in your family or group of friends, one of the best ways to honor their service on Armed Forces Day is to simply spend some time together. So, invite them over for dinner or a backyard barbecue! If you want, show them you appreciate their service by baking a cake or a batch of cupcakes. You can decorate the baked goods with red, white and blue frosting or with a logo or design that represents their branch of the military. If you know anyone who is still serving overseas or out of state, these cupcakes also make for a great care package.
2. HONOR WITH FLOWERS
If you’ve ever lost a friend or family member while he or she was serving in the military, you likely honor his or her memory every day in different ways. On Armed Forces Day, decorate his or her grave with a bouquet of yellow roses. Do whatever feels right to you to honor your beloved soldier, whether it’s writing a letter and leaving it at the grave, sharing memories with the friends or family members who came with you or simply holding a moment of silence.
3. SEND A THOUGHTFUL CARD
The post office no longer allows people to send cards or care packages addressed to “Any Service Member,” but there are still tons of ways you can send a gift, card or letter, even if you don’t personally know any of the soldiers who are serving. Sponsor a care package using programs like Operation USO Care Package or Operation Troop Aid. Or, send letters or help grant veterans’ wishes with the help of the A Million Thanks Organization.
4. VOLUNTEER
Military men and women serve the country, so to honor them, you can help serve your community. Spending time with veterans in retirement communities is a great way to honor Armed Forces Day, but you can also take part in any volunteer opportunity that helps other people or animals.

5. FIND A PARADE
Many communities have parades or other celebrations for Armed Forces Day in May, so do a quick search online to see if you can find one in your city or town. Also, there are often air shows happening during the month of May, and they’re a fun and exciting way to celebrate the U.S. military! Use the parade or air show as an opportunity to explain to your children why you’re celebrating and who you’re honoring on this holiday.
6. DECORATE YOUR PORCH
Finally, one of the easiest ways to show support for the troops in general is by decorating your front porch. Hang an American flag where it can be seen by passers by, and plant red, white and blue flowers (including roses, hydrangeas, carnations, chrysanthemums and daisies) in planters on your porch or front steps. These simple steps will show your support for the men and women serving the country.

Improving Communication in the Workplace by Joanna Penn
In
Communication is critical in the workplace, and there are many ways we can all improve. This benefits our own careers as well as improving working relationships.
order to help us all improve, I interviewed Nancy Kaye from American Communication English on communication tips, cross cultural workplaces and why she is so passionate about communication. What are your tips and tactics for communication in the workplace? Practice Conscious Listening: At the start of our communication sessions with our clients we practice experiencing ACE Inner Tube Breathing™ which calms down, relaxes the mind and brings focus, stilling the inner chatter providing an open space to really hear the lessons. The practice prepares and supports our clients to know how to actively listen to the essence of what someone is conveying. Engage in Asking Questions: To receive feedback and clarification. Our clients are taught to digest what you think is being communicated to the other person. Pausing prior to responding is creating a safe space that gives you time for contemplating, comprehension and understanding. Truth and Authenticity: Learn to discern when the truth is shining in someone;Distinguish when there is incongruence in their communication. The following limiting idea comes up often with our global clients, and seems to be a stumbling block with interacting clearly with co-workers, especially with higher management. This is how we coach them. Label Lock: We all have unconscious assumptions about how other people judge us. The ‘generalized other’ is the psychologists term for this. When we fall into this mental trap the reduced negative image constantly comes up for you each time you endeavor to interact with your colleague or coworker. It could very well be an erroneous judgment, a limiting idea
such as the “Big Bad Boss.” Your perception may be limited by your personal bias, life experiences, age, and so on. We all see the world as we know it through different filters. We then get bogged down by casting someone in a partial role that has to be incomplete. We are all humans with foibles and unique ways of understanding our particular role in our job and how it should be handled. And we think others should behave accordingly. Avoid Label Locking: Our clients are trained to become mindful of not labeling people as this or that. Labeling them puts them in a space that may not be true for them or for you.

How can native English speakers be more sensitive to those for whom English is a second language? Compassionate Communication: Practice patience with them and try to understand the words and thoughts of multi cultural coworkers who are trying to communicate. Show understanding, by using friendly body language, share your smile, look directly into the person’s eyes, nod your head acknowledging that you are listening, use a warm voice, slow you speech down a bit, paraphrase what you think someone has said, these are all great stress busters. Treasure Hunt Adventure: You may discover a new way at looking at the world and gain a friend in the process. This is beyond a ‘win win’ situation. Everybody wins. Tell us a bit about your business. Why are you passionate about communication? My passion is creative communication problem solving. I have a multi-faceted career background with a distillation of many diversified experiences. As a child I was interested in knowing more about the world’s philosophies and religions and how they were similar to each other. I sought out friends and went with them to see what their belief systems were. Having traveled extensively I have learned about many cultures and countries. I am truly interested in other people and their cultures and different ways of doing and being. We teach communication workshops to English as a first language clients as well ESOL speakers in companies and organizations to develop their ability to be confident communicators. The Confident Communicator Workshops cover many areas of communication capability. You cannot speak that which you do not know or share that which you do not feel. You cannot translate that which you do not have or give that which you do not possess. To give it and share it, and for it to be effective, you first need to have it. Great communication starts with good mindful preparation. In our fast paced world we often do not take the time to be full communicators. We speak in shorthand and move swiftly flitting from idea to idea. Deepening our communication capability deepens our connections. My passion extends to all people to be able to become articulate confident communicators. I love helping others find and express their voice. WANTED: More Women in Technology T by Kara Sprague
he number of young women completing engineering and technology programs has dropped significantly in the past 30 years. As a result, women are generally underrepresented in technology-related jobs, especially in technical positions and at leadership levels. The not-for-profit organization Girls Who Code (GWC) was founded in 2011 to improve these numbers. The organization’s goal is to expose a million young women to computerscience education and training by the end of 2020. To achieve that objective, GWC is partnering with US universities, elementary and secondary schools, and large corporations to sponsor after-school clubs and summer immersion programs for girls in grades 6 to 12. According to Girls Who Code CEO and founder Reshma Saujani, the results have been encouraging. By the end of 2015, GWC will have reached 10,000 girls across the United States. Follow-ups with program alumni reveal that 90 percent are planning to major in computer science or mechanical or electrical engineering in college, Saujani says. In this interview with McKinsey’s Kara Sprague, Saujani talks about the importance of fostering gender diversity in technical fields, the obstacles for young women entering them, and the role IT professionals and organizations can play in removing some of those barriers. McKinsey: What prompted you to create Girls Who Code?
Help make the world safer, greener, better.
Reshma Saujani: I’m a somewhat unlikely person to start up a group called Girls Who Code—I’m not a coder. I majored in political science, not computer science. But in 2010, I was running for congressional office, and I visited a lot of schools and met a lot of parents. At that time, New York was becoming a booming city for technology. A lot of established companies were opening offices here, and a lot of entrepreneurs were settling into the city. But in the classrooms of New York, there would be 100 boys in a robotics lab, and maybe two or, worse, no girls. I found myself asking, “Where are all the girls?” That question started this journey
for me. McKinsey: So where are they? What is preventing young girls from entering science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields? Reshma Saujani: There has definitely been a decline in the number of women entering STEM fields since the 1980s. During that period, almost 40 percent of computer-science graduates were women. Today, the number is less than 18 percent. Our team believes that’s due to several factors—popular culture being one of the biggest culprits. Girls get messages all the time from the Internet, fashion magazines, social media, and other forms of media that technology is not for them. I mean, teen girls can walk into any Forever 21 store in any mall in the

United States and buy a T-shirt that reads “allergic to algebra.” And the typical computerscientist protagonist in a TV show is a young guy with a hoodie in a basement somewhere. Because their perspective is not reflected in what they see, these girls say, “Well, I guess that’s not for me.” A second factor is lack of knowledge. I think a lot of people—not just young girls—don’t fully understand what it means to be a computer scientist or a technologist nowadays, what people in those roles do day to day, and the impact they’re able to have on society. How can you pick a career without exposure to people in these roles? That’s what Girls Who Code is trying to provide—opportunities to see and talk and experiment and learn. McKinsey: What sort of interventions does Girls Who Code provide? Reshma Saujani: We want to reverse the trend. We want more girls to declare a major or a minor in computer science. We believe that if we can get them into the pipeline, we can successfully encourage them to create the next Facebook, Pinterest, or Twitter. So we run two programs. One is a seven-week immersive summer program, where we embed classrooms in technology companies—our partner organizations—and we bring in female students and teach them computer programming on-site. In this way, they learn not only the necessary technical skills but also what it’s like to be a computer scientist who works at, say, AT&T, GE, or Google. And because many of their teachers are women, the girls are exposed to potential role models. The second program includes the after-school clubs we sponsor—some 500 clubs in schools in 34 states. We bring in volunteers to teach girls computer programming and some math. Often these volunteers are industry professionals. Some of the stories are really remarkable. I’m thinking about a young woman named Helen who attended our summer immersion program. Her family had migrated from the Soviet Union to Staten Island. This was a bright girl with an audacious goal—to eradicate world hunger. She had never really thought about computer science as a career, but she did recognize technology’s potential to help solve big problems. She had a successful turn in the summer program—so much so that she started a [GWC] club at her school in Staten Island, where she was teaching coding skills to other girls and really leading the club. Eventually she applied and got accepted to Brown University, where she is majoring in computer science. Helen’s a star. But so are all the other girls. Make no mistake, they are learning something that is very difficult. It’s hard to write code—I’m learning along with them, so I know. Even if they don’t completely understand computer science, they are seeing the value in using it to tackle important challenges and find new answers. A girl may have a mother who’s obese, and she’s thinking about how to build an app to help make families eat better. Or she may have a brother who’s dyslexic, and she’s wondering how to help him read. Or she may have a cousin who can’t afford high-priced SAT tutoring, and she wants to create an app for that. They’re constantly thinking about their world and their community and how to make it a better place. McKinsey: The program is having some impact, but what areas still need to be addressed? Reshma Saujani: Once women get into the pipeline, we need to make sure they stay there. There was a study a few years back that noted that about half of technical women leave the industry within ten years. We need to do a better job of encouraging women to stay and rise to the highest levels in technology organizations McKinsey: How can corporations and organizations do that? Reshma Saujani: Apart from participating in programs like ours that are committed to building a pipeline of young talent, companies could also consider ways to convene firmspecific groups for women in technology and build a sense of sisterhood and support. There is still some sexism in tech companies that we all have to work on fighting together. Some members of our board have had a hand in such initiatives. Some companies have formalized programs in which technical women—and men—teach computer programming to other women and to nontechnical employees, who also need to learn how to navigate and communicate in a high-tech environment. Nowadays, we all need to learn how to code. Article provided by www.mckinsey.com

4 Practical Steps to Finding Passion at Work I by Brianna Bulack
f the thought of going to work five days a week for your foreseeable future feels like a cruel life sentence, then you’re not alone. According to Gallup, 70 percent of all Americans are completely disengaged in their jobs. The United States seems to be a nation of time-card-punching zombies waiting for the weekend. But this doesn’t have to be the case. You can have happiness, passion and love for your job, starting today. Here’s how:
1. STOP COMPLAINING AND START APPRECIATING
Warning: this step will be difficult. There are things about your job that you legitimately can call “bad,” and having a healthy venting session can be a much-needed pressure release that helps you get back to the business of being awesome. But complaining is usually just a needless exercise in negativity that compounds your bad mood and makes you feel worse. Instead of complaining about something at work, ask yourself, “Are there any aspects of this that I can appreciate?” or “What about my job made me smile today?” If you ask yourself questions that have positive answers, you set yourself up for feeling good when you might normally feel grouchy and annoyed. You may have to dig deep to find things to appreciate about your job, but if you work at it, being in a positive state can become a habit. Once you start actively looking for positives, you’ll be blown away by how quickly your perspective can shift and how much fun it can be to discover all the little nuggets of happiness at work. Once that happens, people at work (and at the bank, at the grocery store, your clients, and yes, your boss) will be asking you what your secret is. Strive to be noticed, and known, for your great disposition.
2. GET CLEAR ON WHAT YOU WANT
People often feel unhappy at work because they feel stuck. However, those people probably can’t tell you what their plan for the future is because they are so wrapped up in their right-now that they have no energy left for their future. That is a recipe for stagnation and frustration. You have to give your future at least as much energy as you give your present if you ever want to see it come to life. Try this exercise to get your energy shifting from the right-now to the next year: write on a piece of paper “I add value to the world because,” and start listing all of your strengths and why you’re valuable. Next, get a clear vision of what you want your next year to look like. Do you want to have a different job? Travel? Help the homeless? Teach someone to read? Write a book? Start your own business? Get a promotion? Move to a different department? Whatever it is that you want to do, write it down. Lastly, create a plan of action and do it. The point is to have a target to shoot for and a plan to accomplish it. Google what you need to get started.

Shift your focus from where you are to where you want to be. Once you have a goal and a plan, being at work won’t feel like a prison sentence. It’ll feel more like a tool to help finance your journey to your next step—because even dreamers gotta eat.
3. P LAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS
Remember those strengths and talents you outlined above? Well, they don’t just have to be a part of a future plan; they also give you a clear road map to ways you could be creating value and flexing your talent muscles at your current job. Find any way you can to integrate your talents and passions into your current position. Not only will it give you an outlet and make your day more fun, but it’ll get you attention for the right reasons. If you’re good at graphic design or scrap-booking, get involved with your office newsletter. If your office doesn’t have a newsletter, ask if you can start one. Being known for adding value and outside-of-the-box thinking is a great way to make your experience at work more pleasurable.
4. ASK FOR BETTER
Asking for what you want and telling people why they should say yes is a crucial skill for anyone to have. You have to be able to make known your desires and make a case for why they should be a reality. Now, don’t go storming into your boss’s office demanding a 200 percent raise you don’t deserve. Start from a place of adding value, showing your boss that you’re going above and beyond, and creating magic for your team. Suddenly, a raise isn’t a bad idea —nor is a promotion or the ability to telecommute twice a week or anything else that will make you better and happier at your job. Asking and actively negotiating opens the door to opportunity. And you never know, you might get exactly what you ask for. Turning your frown upside down isn’t going to happen overnight. But with time and practice, you’ll find lots of ways to make your days at work easier, more fun and more fulfilling. This ultimately will aid you in moving on to something bigger and better. Focus on your future and use the right now to prepare for what you want, and your days will be filled with magic.

ou have just taken a job as a caregiver for a senior home care assistance company. Providing at-home healthcare is a major responsibility, but can also be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling careers you will ever have. It is also not like anything else you will ever do in your life. As you prepare for your first day on the job with your new clients, you will have a million things running through your mind. These include the proper procedures, how to clock in and clock out, remembering to document everything you do, and any other number of things you learned in training. However, there are a few key factors you need to keep in mind to be successful in your new career.

YOU CANNOT TREAT YOUR WORK LIKE A JOB
You may not fully understand this distinction right now, but once you step foot into you client’s home, it will start to become clear. To you, you are going to work. You have a job to do, and a company to answer to should you not perform adequately. But to your client, they are opening up their lives to you. They are not going to work. For them, this is their life and you are now a part of their life. As a caregiver, you will not be able to distance yourself emotionally and mentally from your work the way you would in other careers. If you try to stay detached and distant, your client will sense it. However, your client will interpret your distance as you not caring about them. They will not respond to this well, and will make every day difficult for you. If you are not prepared for the social aspect of this job, to treat your client as a friend or as you would your grandmother, then you do not understand the scope of this career.
People come from all over the world
to study here, to practice here, and to be treated here.
DON’T ARGUE, APOLOGIZE
The last thing you ever want to do as a caregiver is get into an argument with your client. This will cause you nothing but trouble. Now, some of the people you take care of will be argumentative with you at times. It can be something as little as accusing you of moving the remote control when they accidentally misplaced it, or they may be combative and attack you personally. But no matter how far off-base your client is, directly arguing with them is not the answer. Alternatively, learn the exquisite art of apologizing, even when you know that you are right. Here is the major caveat though. If they accuse you of doing something wrong or stealing, do not admit guilt in your apology. After all, you didn’t do it. Instead, say that you are sorry that they are upset. Offer to help them find what they have lost. Or apologize that you had a misunderstanding if that’s the case. This will show your client that you care about their feelings and concerns, and will prevent conflict that would alter or destroy the relationship you built with your client. If you keep these two important factors in mind as you walk in the door your first day on the job, you will not go wrong. Building and maintaining a relationship with your client is key to success in home care assistance. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

NURSING STUDENTS SHARE TOP
M
by Susan C. Sla
ost nurses are juggling career, home and family responsibilities. One wonders why anyone would add graduate school to an already busy life. Classes, seminars, term papers and long clinical days fill the time that is left in their already-packed schedule. About halfway through the semester of an online graduate class, I assign one “lighter” assignment to allow students to take a breath and relax. This year’s assignment was a Top 10 List. In today’s world, so many of us hear nurses complain about how difficult and challenging our jobs have become and yet graduate students have obviously met that challenge and are seeking to continue in nursing. They clearly see something positive in what they do, so I asked them to identify the top reasons they love being a nurse. Instead of giving you 40 top 10 lists, I have drawn from all of their entries and made a Top 40 list. I encourage you to take a minute and make your own top 10 list.
1. Nursing is a fulfilling career. I love that I make a difference in people’s lives most every day. 2. Nursing is a challenging career where I learn something new every day. It is never boring. 3. Nursing satisfies my need to comfort and care for others. 4. Nursing is being able to help someone if only by saying a kind word or providing a gentle touch. 5. One good day at work can make up for any of the bad days I have. -=== == 6. Nursing is being present for many of a patient’s most meaningful moments including the birth of a child and the death of a loved one. 7. It takes a special person to do what we do and I’m glad to be a part of it. 8. Nursing is educating, advocating and helping others strive for a better quality of life. 9. N ursing helps me organize my time efficiently. 10. Nursing has helped me to really listen to others. 11. I get to wear glorified pajamas (scrubs) to work. 12. Nursing is part of an interdisciplinary team. 13. Nursing has strengthened my spiritual faith. 14. Nursing has offered me the gratification in knowing I am “giving back to society.” 15. Nurses can help people heal in mind, body and spirit. 16. I have a passion for what I do. I never wake up and dread going to work. 17. I love the challenge of my career. No 2 days are ever the same.

g career, home and family ers why anyone would add ready busy life. Classes, d long clinical days fill the already-packed schedule.
18. Nursing has made me a better person, husband, wife, son, daughter and friend. I am more patient, caring and open-minded because I’m a nurse. 19. Nursing helps me value my life and those who are in it. I see sudden, unfortunate death frequently and it gives me stronger resolve to stop and “smell the roses.” 20. Nursing allows me to be creative. Having a child forget he is in the hospital is the greatest by bringing in snow so he can make a snowman. 21. The goodbye hugs from the children who shouldn’t have made it but somehow did. 22. Nursing allows me to have a lot of autonomy. 23. There is always room for advancement in nursing. 24. B eing a nurse means lifelong learning. 25. Nursing allows for a flexible schedule. When my sons were younger, I could work weekends or evenings when their father was home and, now that I am back in school, I can work around my school schedule. 26. Feeling trusted. There is nothing better than beginning your shift and having a parent leave because they know their child is in good hands. 27. Not having to do it all. If you can’t get everything done, there is always someone that can help. 28. Most people don’t particularly like their jobs. I can honestly say that I am proud to a nurse. 29. I love the fast-paced, technologically advanced, critical-thinking environment of nursing. I am
always challenged in new ways. 30. I love my amazing work family. Sometimes I spend more time with them than my real family! 31. I love all the people I have the opportunity to meet on a daily basis from all across the world. Understanding cultural differences is a real gift. 32. Nursing has humbled me. Many days, I hold a patient’s life in my hands. 33. Nursing has taught me to have empathy and compassion for others. 34. On most days I expend more calories at work than I take in. Nursing is definitely not sedentary! 35. If you don’t like one area of nursing, there is always something else to try. 36. B eing able to work with a lot of smart people. 37. Achieving gratification is seeing patients thrive and knowing I had a part in their recovery 38. Having 24/7 access to medical advice and education from trusted healthcare professionals. 39. There is such camaraderie among nurses in and out of the clinical environment. Once you discover another person is a nurse, you share a common bond and understanding. 40. I am allowed to see just a snapshot of strangers’ lives. Although they may not remember my name in 10 years, they will remember the way I made them feel. Susan C. Slaninka, EdD, RN, is an adjunct professor of nursing, Villanova University, Villanova, PA.

Healthcare Jobs Continue to Rise by Jenni Jacobsen
H
ealthcare jobs have a bright outlook. In fact, about 1 in every 4 new jobs added to the economy between 2014 and 2024 will be in healthcare fields, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics projections. What’s behind this wave of growth? A couple of factors: The baby boom generation is aging and people are living longer, so there will be more older people who need healthcare services to remain healthy and active. Also, rates of chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity are growing, so more healthcare workers will be needed to help care for people with conditions like these. And because more people have health insurance due to federal health insurance reform, they’re also more likely to use healthcare services, increasing the demand for many kinds of healthcare workers. There are hundreds, if not thousands of different types of medical jobs. Healthcare is the largest industry, showing the highest amount of growth of any other field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employing 14 million people in 2006, the healthcare industry is projected to add about three million more jobs by 2016, according to the BLS. It appears that both healthcare workers and their employers are gaining confidence in the industry as well as the larger economy, according to recent trends and surveys. New healthcare jobs continued to rise in 2015 – a trend that began in the fourth quarter of 2014 when the health sector added 127,000 jobs. The fourth quarter of 2014 was the largest quarterly increase in healthcare employment since 1990 breaking a 25 year record, according to Altarum Institute’s Center for Sustainable Health Spending. The trend from December 2014 carried forward into 2015: • January 2015 saw 45,000 new healthcare jobs created. • February and March saw significant drop off with 27,320 and 22,300 new jobs respectively. • But job creation rebounded nicely with 45,000 in April and another 47,000 in May. • For a 5-month total of 186,620 new healthcare jobs in 2015. Healthcare Worker Confidence also on the Rise Further, a Harris poll reported that healthcare workers have increased confidence in job availability and the strength of the American economy. The poll measured the confidence of 3,100 healthcare workers and found that: Overall confidence among healthcare workers is on the rise. • 28% of healthcare employees agreed that there were more healthcare job openings–a 9% increase from the third quarter. • 56% of healthcare professionals were optimistic in finding another job if needed. • 30% were looking for new healthcare job opportunities while 58% were content in their current positions. • Job security was highest in healthcare workers in relation to other professions with 76% feeling that their jobs were secure. As the industry settles into healthcare reform, the trends suggest that both employer and worker confidence is on the increase. The result is a sustained increase of healthcare job openings and improved job security for current employees. But still, the industry has to contend with the ongoing workforce shortage in order to capitalize on current trends. For many healthcare facilities, this means establishing or improving their recruitment and hiring strategies in conjunction with using a contingent workforce. Healthcare workforce management software that taps into a nationwide medical professional database is ideal for recruiting top talent. The Stay Staffed Vendor Management Software combined with the nationwide Candidate Direct Marketplace of medical professionals helps hospitals organize and streamline their recruitment and hiring process. Switching Careers with an Accelerated Nursing Program H by Jr. G. Jerde
igh salaries, rewarding work and excellent job prospects make nursing a great choice if you are stuck in a career rut and looking to make a change. Additionally, hundreds of universities around the U.S. have simplified the transition to nursing with accelerated nursing programs. These programs give second-career students with bachelor’s degrees ranging from business to botany a relatively quick path to getting started in the field.
ACCELERATED BACHELOR’S IN NURSING
Accelerated bachelor’s programs are the most common way second-degree students enter the nursing field, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. These programs allow you to use courses completed during your previous degree to satisfy general education requirements and graduate in 12 to 18 months. Your total time commitment may be longer if you lack necessary science prerequisites, which you must

complete before the program begins. Students in accelerated programs participate in supervised clinical hours just like traditional students, allowing them to gain hands-on experience while they study. Accelerated bachelor’s programs require a significant time commitment and dedication. The majority of students study full-time and complete clinical requirements simultaneously. Upon graduation, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses and obtain a license to practice through your state board of nursing before you begin work as a registered nurse. Though the number of accelerated programs has increased considerably over the past couple decades, competition for admission remains intense. The AACN reports that most programs require a GPA of at least 3.0 in your previous course of study and an entrance interview to gauge your ability to complete the rigorous program requirements.

Generic master’s programs are a type of accelerated nursing program that allows students to become advanced practice nurses. As an advanced practice nurse, you will have increased responsibilities and earning potential, performing many of the tasks traditionally completed by doctors. Master’s programs typically require three years of study. During the first year, you complete training to become a registered nurse, which is similar to the training provided in accelerated bachelor’s programs. After this initial year, your educational experience is similar to that of experienced nurses working toward a master’s of nursing.

JOB OUTLOOK FOR SECOND-CAREER NURSES
Health care organizations are expected to hire over 500,000 new registered nurses and nearly 200,000 new advanced practice nurses between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These numbers represent employment growth much faster than the average for all occupations, indicating that jobs for qualified nurses will be plentiful. Rural areas and inner cities hold the best opportunities for new nurses. Upon entering the workforce, registered nurses earn an average annual wage of approximately $65,000, while advanced practice nurses earn more than $95,000, according to BLS wage surveys. The outlook for second-career nurses may be particularly sunny. Interviews conducted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing suggest that many hospital administrators prefer to hire nurses that have come from other professions, citing the perspective that comes from experience in multiple fields and the leadership potential that second-career nurses often possess. Switching to a career in nursing is not easy. The prospect of taking on a full-time schedule of classes and clinical hours while balancing family obligations is daunting, but for many, this is precisely the point of entering a second career: to seek out new and exciting challenges, face them head on and reap the rewards of their success. eing a nurse is tough. The profession requires an extraordinary level of commitment, compassion, and versatility. Oftentimes, the responsibilities of a nurse can become exhausting not only in the physical sense but emotionally and mentally as well. One of the biggest challenges you have to face if you’re a nurse is the fact that you’ll be exposed to all sorts of situations and you’ll be providing care for many different types of patients. For instance, if you land a nursing job in mental health, you will often have to care for patients who are mentally incapable of functioning normally and who will need more than the usual patience and assistance.
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES IN MENTAL HEALTH
Although the expectation may be a little bit more, the basic duties of nurses in a mental health institution are pretty much the same as in any other environment. Here are some of the task assignments you can expect to have:
1. GATHERING INFORMATION ABOUT THE PATIENTS.
If you have been placed in charge of a new patient, the first thing you should do is collect all the relevant information regarding them, including their vital information, family background, and medical history. You may also need to interview family members regarding the patient’s recent behaviors and lifestyle.
2. MAKING AN INITIAL DIAGNOSIS.
While it is certainly the doctor’s job to give the final diagnosis, nurses are sometimes expected to be able to figure out the causes of certain illnesses, as well as to administer firstaid treatment when necessary.
3. MONITORING THE PROGRESS OF A PATIENT.

It is the nurse’s responsibility to keep track of all developments in a patient’s condition and to notify the doctor of these developments. The nurse should also make sure the patient takes all the necessary medications and does all the required procedures in order to facilitate faster healing and recovery.
4. INTERPRETING AND EVALUATING RESULTS.
Nurses should be able to accurately interpret and evaluate results of a patient’s treatment and determine whether the treatment has been successful or not. They should also be capable of making the necessary adjustments should the treatment prove inadequate or ineffective. Working as a nurse in a mental health institution is undoubtedly more challenging because most patients will be unable to respond normally to routine procedures. Some might be very uncooperative while others can even be downright violent. However, despite these difficulties, many mental health nurses also say that working with mentally challenged individuals is also more rewarding, especially when they are able to witness the complete healing of a person. On another note, nursing jobs in mental health also generally pay more than ordinary nursing jobs, so this is another factor that may attract you to this field. You do have to be able to exercise a lot of patience if you want to have a nursing job in mental health. It will also help if you truly love what you do because this is the most important factor that will make you last long in your career and help you become a successful and well-liked nurse in the mental health niche. hether you are a prospective IT Recruiter or an IT Professional in search of a new position or contract, making great connections and first impressions are always the greatest goals. Even within the same company, Human Resource departments are going to look for a completely different skillset from those they bring on as contract or permanent recruiters than those they are looking to hire as IT staff. In the meanwhile, it is important for both types of candidates to know what to do, and what not to do, to land the job.
RECRUITERS
A vital leader in providing comprehensive human services in collaboration with multi-talented and diversely challenged individuals and families.
May 2016
The prospect of success as a recruiter, whether salaried or contracted, depends on your ability to not only sell yourself, but to be able to sell candidates on the corporation. In a highly competitive market with ever-changing technology, you have to strive and have the work ethic to remain educated and engaged. When interviewing with HR, there are several important guidelines for landing the job or the contract. Do Your Homework: Before you approach an interview, or a meeting to offer recruitment services, research the company. Are they in need of someone to staff just their IT department, as a healthcare organization or large University, and perhaps you might be expected to branch your services into healthcare or education staffing? Or are they a tech company constantly looking for new talent for IT or coding? Knowing the answers to the questions prior to going in will allow you to keep your cool and stay engaged. Listen: If you go into discussions with a company ready to burst open with a list of your experience and accolades, you may be making a mistake. Confidence is, indeed, king. At the same time, willingness to learn and genuine interest in the company is going to bring you even further. Resist the urge to tune them out when they wax about the company’s details. Ask questions, and then ask follow-up questions to show you are listening and understand their needs. Sell: Explain how you source candidates, your previous successes, and your use of technology. Showing that you are the master of both face to face communications, have social media and professional networking skills, and have a very professional work ethic is all part of selling yourself. You have to sell your personality, ability to be a self-starter, and knowledge of industry jargon the same way that you would sell a candidate to the company or the company to a candidate.
IT PROFESSIONALS
You may have been contacted by a recruiter, approached a staffing company, or sent your resume to the company at which you wish to work. In any case, if you have landed that all-important interview for the dream job, be sure to brush up on your interpersonal and interview skills before going to shine. Research: Be sure that you are qualified for the position, and learn about the company as well. Whether you are going into the tech industry, or another industry in need of IT support, it is best to know as much as you can to be prepared. Showing up unprepared looks like lack of interest to the interviewer! Ask questions even if you have done your research and know the answers. Minimize Unemployment Periods: Hopefully you have taken a few freelance gigs or classes if you were unemployed. Any time passing between places of employment that wasn’t filled with education, freelance work, or other self-improvement will be something where you will have to give an account. Do not go unprepared without an explanation for any lost time. Have extra copies of your resume or CV on hand. Don’t Let Them Shake You: Sometimes when interviewing for a prestigious company, the recruiter will ask some unexpected questions just to see your reaction. Go with the flow, smile, and regroup. Even when nervous, try to stay cool. Keep focused, don’t ramble! Show that you are confident in your skills, certifications, and experience. Dress for Success: Do not show up underdressed. Professional attire, no matter the company dress policy, is needed at the interview. And Finally Don’t forget to follow up. The call to remind them that you are interested may be the one when you get the job offer or contract. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

Managing the Time You Haven’t Got
Do
by C.J. Hayden, MCC
the words “time management” rub you the wrong way? For many busy professionals, the real problem seems to be that there isn’t any time left to manage. You can sometimes get better at managing your time by prioritizing all your tasks and scheduling carefully. But when you’re already using all the time you have efficiently and there’s still not enough, there are four strategies you can try. Make more time. The fastest way to make time can be to buy it. You may think you don’t have enough money to pay for help, but think about what your time is worth. If your salary is equivalent to earning $25 an hour, and you pay someone else $12 an hour to run errands for you, that’s a bargain. And what value would you set on being able to spend an extra hour having fun with your partner or kids? You can buy time by paying to have your house cleaned, your car taken for servicing, or your laundry done. Pay a professional to prepare your taxes; have your groceries delivered; make routine purchases by phone or Internet. Another way to make time is to double up on activities. Get a handsfree mike for your cell phone so you can return calls, place orders, or give instructions to staff while driving or walking. When traveling by public transit, bring along backlogged mail or documents to review. Use your waiting time at the prescription counter or dentist to balance your checkbook or plan your day. Having something to do will also make your wait more pleasant.
Page 25
Make less time do. If this were a perfect world, we could do everything perfectly. Many of us try to do this anyway, and it eats up an enormous amount of time. A good example is writing business or personal letters. If it takes you two hours to write the perfect letter, you’ve lost an hour you could have used to write to someone else. Try setting a time limit on routine tasks like this, and stick to it. You may find that you can write a very satisfactory letter in half the time. Embrace the idea of allowing what you do to be “good enough” instead of insisting it must be flawless. Give some things away. Is every responsibility something you need to look after personally, or could someone else handle it? If you have employees, look hard at what you’re hanging on to. Is there anything else you could delegate, maybe by providing some training first? If there is no one you can delegate to on the job, be sure you ask your boss for help before assuming that it’s impossible. Examine your personal life and volunteer responsibilities in the same way. Ask your family to take on more household chores, or find someone else to help with the community event you’re organizing. Asking for help isn’t cheating; it’s what all successful people do. Do some things later. Does all of it really have to be done now? Maybe there’s just too much on your plate for anyone to realistically handle. Choose only a few places to focus your energies right now, and put some of those other projects on hold. You don’t have to give anything up, just defer it to a later time. If you find yourself often getting distracted by new ideas, start an idea file. When an exciting new thought occurs to you, put it in the file instead of acting on it right away. Look at your file from time to time for inspiration. Whenever you complete a project you’ve been working on, you can choose something new from the file. The most important thing to learn about creating more time in your life is how to say no. Just because you are asked to take something on doesn’t mean you have to accept it. Ultimately, your time belongs only to you; make sure you are the one who chooses how to use it. Copyright © C.J. Hayden C.J. Hayden is the author of Get Hired Now! and Get Clients Now! Looking at “Fastest Growing Careers” Lists? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Be
E
by Aileen Maguire
verybody wonders what they should do for a career at some point in life. Looking at career resources is often helpful. One type of resource often consulted is one of the many available “best careers” or “fastest-growing careers” lists. However, relying on these lists as your sole resource when trying to find a career that’s right for you might not be the best idea. Here are five reasons why.
YOU MAY NOT LIKE THE JOB
Just because the job pays well or makes an appearance on a list as a fast-growing field does not mean that it’s a match for you. If you don’t like what you’re doing, it won’t matter how much you’re getting paid. Also, you may obtain training or spend money on certificates or education only to discover that you don’t like the job. That is money wasted instead of money earned. Shadow a job you haven’t done before or have little experience with to see if you like it before investing in education
STATISTICS CHANGE
Choosing a job because statistics show that it pays well or is expected to experience a large growth rate is not always a smart idea. Numbers and statistics as they relate to anything, particularly jobs and labor statistics, change very frequently. Even the Bureau of Labor Statistics updates their numbers every two years. If you’re choosing a profession that requires extensive schooling or education, the pay or growth rate could drop by the time you enter the workforce. If you selected the career field based solely on statistics, you would be in for a disappointment.

If looking at job growth as an indicator of whether or not a career is a good option has been your standard course of action, think again. Just because the growth rate for a job is high does not mean that the salary is. In fact, statistically speaking no correlation has been found or can be made between job growth and salary. While it may be helpful to see what the job growth rate is between two or more careers that you have already decided on, looking at the growth rate in and of itself is not a good starting point.
THE EDUCATION MIGHT BE UNATTAINABLE
It is very often the case that those jobs and careers listed as the fastest-growing or highest paying also require the most education. In fact, many of these jobs require masters, doctorates, and other higher degrees. If you don’t have the financial stability, time, or aptitude required to attain the educational standards associated with a certain profession, pursuing it may not be the best idea. Even jobs that say they only require a GED or a diploma often require higher education for those seeking any position higher than entrylevel. Always fully research the educational requirements of not only entry-level positions, but also higher tier and management positions before jumping into a career field. GROWTH RATE IS NOT ALWAYS ADEQUATELY EXPLAINED How growth rate is determined is not always explained to the general public. Let’s say you are considering a career that is projected to grow by 100 percent. By all accounts, that is a very high growth rate. However, that percentage is obtained by comparing a given year to another year that is a decade away. In other words, if a job or career is expected to have a 100 percent growth rate, that means that between 2012 and 2022 the number of available jobs should essentially double. Put differently, if a job or career has 5000 openings in 2012, there will be 5000 more jobs available between 2012 and 2022. However, growth rates do not tell you how many job openings are currently available for a given career. If the career you are considering only has 100 available openings when you are looking into it, that means that only 100 jobs will be added in the next 10 years. It might be a 100 percent growth rate, but it does not translate into a booming field with thousands of openings. Always understand what it is you’re looking at when you are reviewing a list of statistics. Thoroughly research everything about a career before you embark on your journey towards it. Make sure that you can live on the salary of an entry-level worker, but that there is also room to grow and learn more as you move up the ranks. Always ensure that you thoroughly research what the job entails, and shadow somebody who currently does that job before you invest a large amount of time or money into obtaining it. Most importantly, the job that you are not happy with will never be worth the pay; choose a career that you are passionate about so you always love going to work in the morning. Doing custom work means that if someone comes in with a piece of trim that’s 150 years old, we can reproduce it. Right now I have an entire house’s worth of millwork laid out in my shop. It’s for a new construction that is meant to look like an old Victorian home. Describe a typical day. I might be doing drawings for different custom tooling or figuring out the design by mocking it up. For example, I’ll make part of a piece to figure out how something will go together. I’ll make a rough-cut list of the quantity of material I need, doing calculations to figure out how to maximize it. I’m also pulling out pieces from my inventory to work with. How did you prepare for your job? My training was pretty much in the field, working in the trade. I first started working in a cabinet and furniture shop in high school.

Studying sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design gave me a more critical eye and taught me how to look at things correctly, such as how to tell when something is out of proportion. But you don’t really need a degree to do what I do. I went to college because I was interested in art. I had an interest in furniture design, and I thought studying art would help me further that interest. Furniture designing didn’t really go anywhere for me, though. What inspired you to pursue carpentry? Wood, to me, is magical; it’s beautiful. Working with wood when I was a kid in my dad’s workshop, I was drawn to the material more than anything. I wanted to try making a career of it. How do you get projects? Mostly by word of mouth. My shop regularly works with a handful of contractors and architects. I’ll do the design work, or clients will show me their drawings and say, “Make this.” Or they’ll bring in old wood or pieces of things they want remade. We mostly work on a bid system. Sometimes, although rarely, we bill for the cost of time and materials.
May 2016 What do you like most about your job? There are a lot of things. I love my work, and I’ve always been compensated well for it. I get to use a variety of different machines and hand tools, like a joiner, table saw, and chisel. But mostly, I like producing something tangible at the end of the day. What’s your best advice? Find a mentor. Listen, and take in as much as you can from people who have been doing this kind of work for a long time. When thinking about where to work, know that, in bigger shops, it’s more like an assembly line. In smaller shops, there may not be as much opportunity to move up the ladder. But be patient. You’ll definitely be learning a lot. Cabinetmakers and bench carpenters: 2014 employment: 98,100. 2014-24 projected growth: 1% . May 2014 median annual wage: $31,580. ADRENALINE JOBS: High-Intensity Careers by Elka Torpey
en Sharp understands risk. She routinely harnesses first-time skydivers to a parachute system and falls out of an airplane with them. As they plummet toward the ground at 120 miles per hour, Sharp is responsible for controlling the fall and deploying the parachute. “It’s like you’re flying,” she says. “You feel very powerful and very vulnerable at the same time.” After opening the parachute, she maneuvers herself and her student safely to the ground. Helping students during a jump and successfully giving them their first skydiving experience is just part of the job for Sharp, a skydive instructor in Osage City, Kansas. Before each jump, Sharp checks the weather, readies the equipment, and teaches her students about proper jumping procedure. “We prepare so much,” she says, “but in the moment, you just have to act. That’s an intense, fun part of what we do.” People like Sharp are drawn to the high-intensity careers described in this article. Keep reading for data and more information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) about the job outlook, typical entry-level requirements, and pay for some of these occupations.
POTENTIAL RISK, EXCITEMENT AND MORE
Across all occupations there is the possibility for intense situations. But in the occupations described here, the chances of encountering them are high. And in many cases, lives or property are at stake. Uncertainty is also a given, as workers rarely know exactly what will happen next. “With a flick of the switch, everything changes,” says emergency medical technician (EMT) Frank Wagner of Elizabeth, New Jersey. “Everything can be perfectly normal one minute, and then it’s not.”
PROTECTING THE PUBLIC
Every city and town needs workers to keep the public safe and maintain law and order. And doing so, at times, is risky. Correctional officers. Overseeing accused or convicted criminals in jails or prisons requires correctional officers to be alert and prepared for the unexpected. Criminal investigators. Criminal investigators get close to the action when they visit crime scenes, interview witnesses or suspects, and conduct raids and arrests. Firefighters. Whether rushing into a burning building or acting as first responders during medical emergencies, firefighters perform a variety of challenging tasks. Police. Police are always on the lookout for trouble as they patrol areas for signs of criminal activity, respond to calls, and arrest people suspected of breaking the law. Security guards. These workers monitor for theft, terrorist acts, and other illegal activity. Security guards may experience intense situations when called on to enforce the rules.
SAVING LIVES
9-1-1 operators. Police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers answer emergency calls, notify first responders, and provide immediate assistance as necessary. Ambulance drivers and attendants. With their vehicle lights flashing and sirens wailing, ambulance drivers and attendants transport patients to facilities quickly and safely so that patients can receive medical attention as soon as possible. Critical care nurses. These nurses care for patients who require intensive care, which might involve, for example, monitoring people who have gone into shock. EMTs and paramedics. Among the first to arrive during a crisis, EMTs and paramedics treat sick or injured people on the spot and help get them to a medical facility for further care. ER physicians. Heart attacks, severe trauma, accidental poisonings— lots of medical problems might present themselves in the emergency room that can cause these doctors’ stress levels to rise.
Helping students during a jump and successfully giving them their first skydiving experience is just part of the job for Sharp, a skydive instructor in Osage City, Kansas.

ENCOUNTERING DANGER OR ADVENTURE
These workers go places—or do things—that others dare not, all for the sake of their jobs. Below shows projected job openings for a few occupations in which danger or adventure are often intertwined with the work. Military careers are not included in the chart, because BLS does not make projections for those occupations. The number of military personnel is expected to remain fairly consistent through 2024, with job openings arising from the need to replace those who leave military service. Explosives workers. The threat involved in detonating or transporting volatile substances makes explosives workers’ jobs inherently dangerous. Extreme sports instructors. A relatively small number of self-enrichment education teachers show others how to perform daring feats, such as rock climbing, skydiving, or whitewater kayaking. Fishing workers. Fishing workers are on the seas in all conditions, doing very physical work on slippery surfaces and risking injury. However, excitement kicks in when they bring in a large haul. Hazmat removal workers. In the chaotic aftermath of accidents or disasters, hazardous materials removal workers rush to the scene to help clean up. Military personnel. Although combat specialty personnel are among the most likely members of the military to encounter danger, plenty of other military personnel might also work under stress.
FROM HIGHEST HIGHS TO LOWEST LOWS
The median annual wage for most of the occupations was higher than the $35,540 median wage for all occupations in May 2014, according to BLS. In addition to providing good wages, intense or action-packed careers are often interesting and fulfilling, say workers in these occupations. But the stress can take a toll, and despite workers’ best efforts, there is no guarantee things will go as planned. “There are always those situations that don’t have the happy ending we all hope for,” says Blake Govan, a police dispatcher in Detroit, Michigan. “That’s hard to deal with, and you may even second-guess your decision making.” Job Openings Average Wage Correctional officers and jailers 457,600 $39,780 Detectives and criminal investigators 116,700 $79,870 Firefighters 327,300 $45,970 Police and sheriff’s patrol officers 680,000 $56,810 Security guards 1,095,400 $24,410 Ambulance drivers and attendants 19,600 $24,080 Emergency technicians/paramedics 241,200 $31,700 Physicians and surgeons 708,300 $187,200 Police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers 102,000 $37,410 Registered nurses 2,751,000 $66,640 Explosives workers, ordinance handling experts, and blasters 8,100 $52,140 Fishing and hunting workers 28,400 $32,530 Hazardous materials removal workers 43,700 $38,520 Schedules may be long and grueling, with some workers regularly having 10-hour or 12-hour shifts that include nights, weekends, or holidays. And in many of these occupations, injury, illness, and fatality rates are higher than average.

To reduce risk factors, workers take precautions, such as by wearing protective gear or adhering to workplace safety guidelines. Still, their jobs may expose them daily to disease, suffering, or other physically and emotionally taxing situations. Support from colleagues helps these workers persevere through the hardships. And many are driven by a desire to succeed amid challenges. Working through difficult situations is important, says Sharp—especially when giving up is not an option. Wagner agrees. “You can’t get upset or shaken up,” he says. “You just do your job.” The variety of work in many of the occupations is also a plus. “Every day is an adventure,” says Govan. But perhaps the greatest reward is the opportunity to have a positive effect on others. “When you go home, you feel like you’ve served a purpose,” says Kevin Stuart, a correctional officer in Brazos County, Texas. “That’s really satisfying.”
GETTING STARTED
Workers in high-intensity jobs say it takes a lot more than a desire for action or excitement to succeed in these occupations. For starters, you must be adaptable and perform well under pressure. Good judgment and self-control are also important. And the ability to communicate with all types of people is essential, as is following protocol. “When you take shortcuts, that’s when things become risky,” says Stuart.
EDUCATION
To enter most of the occupations mentioned in this article, you’ll need a high school diploma or the equivalent. But even then, employers may prefer to hire workers with additional education. Only fishing workers typically can enter their occupation without a formal educational credential. Among the occupations that typically require higher levels of education for entry are firefighters (certificate or other postsecondary nondegree award), registered nurses (bachelor’s degree), and doctors (professional degree.)
TRAINING
Performing well in high-stress situations requires a certain level of competency, which is frequently honed while training on the job. Security guards, for example, typically need no more than 1 month of on-the-job experience and informal training. Hazardous materials removal workers are among those who may need up to 12 months of training. And firefighters and explosives workers usually develop their skills on the job for more than a year. In some occupations, such as those in protective service, workers attend special training academies after being hired. Graduates from these training academies then receive additional on-the-job training at their own facility.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Like workers in other occupations, those in high-intensity jobs must meet a variety of additional requirements. To become an entry-level criminal investigator, for example, you typically need work experience as a police officer. And in many of these occupations, such as registered nurse, workers need a professional license. Still other qualifications might include age requirements, U.S. citizenship, and a valid driver’s license, as well as passing a physical exam, drug screening, or background check. Because of the unique rigors of these jobs, you may want to experience the work firsthand before pursuing a career. You might, for example, do a ride-along with an ambulance driver or shadow a fishing worker. Internships are also helpful. In fact, there may be lots of ways to get a sense for what these workers do. Govan first became interested in emergency response work after his uncle gave him a police scanner, so he could listen in on the action. He became so intrigued, he asked to do a sit-along at a local 9-1-1 center, which confirmed his passion. “That’s what grasped me and got me addicted to the job,” he says. For people who thrive on action, their attraction to these occupations may differ. But high-stakes careers often have at least one thing in common: The daily uncertainty offers a chance to develop as a person. “I still learn new things,” says Sharp. “You can always keep growing.” Learn more about the occupations in this article and many others, such as surgical technologists, logging workers, and emergency management directors, in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH).
