( originating from 2015 ), that said three-quarters of white people in America don't have a friend of color, and that for many Americans, the first time they meaningfully interact with someone from a different racial background is in the workplace. If this is true, diversity and inclusion in workplace culture is ground zero for us to begin to accept and understand each other.

The world needs people who do not look the other way when they see or hear racism and discrimination at work. We can all do a great deal to make our workplaces more supportive, open, and tolerant.

Marginalized groups receive the strongest and most sustained support through people who are allies.

We’re not all the same. Understanding that skin color, gender, and sexual orientation play a role in life – especially for those who deviate from the "norm"– is required in order to actively fight racism and discrimination. The struggle against injustice should not be waged by anyone alone.

Everyone wants to feel included, accepted, and understood. It's human nature. We want to be recognized for all of who we are and the unique perspective we can bring to the table.

How far have we come?

Diversity in STEM has come a long way in 20 years, but the journey from where we were to where we are now was far from smooth sailing.

Commission’s Working Group on Broadband and Gender found a significant and pervasive gap in ICT, with 200m fewer women online than men worldwide.

It was a bad couple of years for Big Tech too. In 2013, software engineer and diversity advocate Tracy Chou wrote a wrote a Medium post that challenged tech employers to reveal the number of women engineers they had on staff, demanding that these figures not be hidden away.

The following May, protests outside Google HQ in California criticised the lack of minorities in boardrooms and in executive roles in Silicon Valley companies.

This led to a flurry of diversity reports from various major tech players starting with Google but also including Twitter, Facebook (now Meta), Pinterest, Amazon, Apple and LinkedIn. The reports highlighted what many already knew to be the case: these companies had an overwhelming majority of men, most of which were white.

While these reports made for grim reading, it was also the start of real change. Dragging these stark statistics out into the spotlight gave this massive systemic problem more attention than ever.

In the midst of all this discourse, campaigns to make the industry a better place for women and minorities were starting to grow. By 2014, Silicon Republic’s own Women Invent campaign had already entered its second year.

Distractingly Sexy Campaigns

As the world moved into 2015, the importance of diversity and inclusion had finally started to be acknowledged by the major industry players and many started to take action so they could at least show they were trying to address the problem.

At the beginning of the year, chip giant Intel announced

Meanwhile, Salesforce spent $3m to adjust its salary sheet, providing equal pay to women and men throughout the company While these moves were all incredibly positive, the needle was still pretty static at the major tech giants in Silicon Valley.

Major funding was being pumped in to solve the problem, but it had been ignored for so long that systemic, deep-rooted gender biases were proving much harder to undo.

In June 2015, biochemist and Nobel Prize winner Tim Hunt caused a storm when he made controversial comments about women in science.

“Let me tell you about my trouble with girls…three things happen when they are in the lab…You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticize them, they cry,” he said.

Hunt subsequently resigned from his post at University College London, but his remarks sparked the birth of the #DistractinglySexy hashtag on Twitter, with many women scientists highlighting the absurdity of Hunt’s comments.

Shortly after this, another hashtag was born: #ILookLikeAnEngineer . This one began following an ad for tech company OneLogin, which featured one of its software engineers, Isis Wenger (now Isis Anchalee). Following the publication of the billboard advert, it began to garner a lot of attention online, particularly from men who challenged the notion that Wenger was indeed a software engineer and not a paid-for model.

This led to women in STEM once again taking to social media to highlight their existence in the field.

The years that followed saw more campaigns and initiatives to either improve diversity in STEM or to highlight the work of women that had been hidden for so long.

Dublin City University renamed six of its campus buildings to honour pioneering women in the fields of computing, crystallography and astronomy. A Women of NASA Lego proposal led to several women hidden figures being recognized in Lego form. And at the end of 2016, the Royal Irish Academy added portraits of notable women to its walls for the first time in 230 years .

While all of these steps were pointing in the right direction, it continued to feel like two steps forward and one step back.

By the end of 2017, a stark report from the World Economic Forum suggested that the economic gender gap wouldn’t be closed for another 217 years.

It’s all about using healthcare data to drive decisions. Data is one of the most valuable assets that any organization owns.

Having professionals on staff who are trained to properly collect, store, retrieve, and present data that supports clinical and business decisions is vital. Healthcare data analysts may help hospitals, health systems, and physician groups decide whether to add a new service line, merge other providers, or join an Accountable Care Organization. They also provide data insights that drive clinical process improvement, such as reducing readmissions and hospital-acquired conditions. In addition, healthcare analysts help insurers, vendors, and others synthesize data that guides decision-making, population health management, cost containment, and quality improvement.

Where Do Healthcare Analysts Work?

Healthcare data analysts work for hospitals, health systems, large physician practice groups, health insurance companies, electronic health record (EHR) and other health information technology vendors, healthcare consulting companies, federal and state departments and agencies, and other health organizations.

In large enterprises, they often work as part of a larger business intelligence team that reports directly to executive leaders, such as the chief medical officer or chief financial officer. Are You Right for a Healthcare Data Analyst Role?

If you’re a stickler for detail and number crunching, enjoy solving complex problems, and work well under pressure, then a healthcare analyst job might be a good fit—particularly if you have a passion and curiosity for healthcare. Other important personality traits include the ability to collaborate with others, multi-task in a busy environment, and communicate clearly both in written and verbal formats.

Those with previous healthcare experience are well-positioned to become healthcare data analysts. That’s because they can directly apply their domain knowledge. For example, HIM professionals—especially medical coders, medical record clerks, charge audit analysts, or auditors—are well-suited for health data analyst positions because of their experience applying medical codes to clinical data. They’re familiar with the EHR and understand healthcare industry terminology, such as ICD, CPT, LOINC, and SNOMED. Nurses and medical assistants may also be a good fit because of their direct clinical care experience and familiarity with clinical data.

How Do You Become a Healthcare Data Analyst?

Many healthcare analyst positions require a bachelor’s degree in health information management or—even better— health information management and technology (HIMT) or another relevant field such as mathematics, biostatistics, or data science. An HIMT bachelor’s degree demonstrates that you have all of the knowledge and skills you need to succeed as a healthcare analyst, such as data warehousing and mining, health information technology standards, programming and software development, quality assessment, and project management.

Many healthcare analyst positions require a bachelor’s degree in health information management or—even better—health information management and technology (HIMT) or another relevant field such as mathematics, biostatistics, or data science.

Employers also prefer to hire those with healthcare experience, such as experience working with clinical or other types of EHR data. (Worried about not having clinical data experience? Know this: University of Wisconsin HIMT students complete capstone projects, which often provide the real-life work experience they need to get their foot in the door.)

Aspiring healthcare data analysts may also want to consider obtaining the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) credential from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). According to AHIMA, the CHDA denotes one’s ability to “acquire, manage, analyze, interpret, and transform data into accurate, consistent, and timely information, while balancing the ‘big picture’ strategic vision with day-to-day details.”

Other potentially helpful resources include the National Association of Health Data Organizations, Healthcare Data and Analytics Association, and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
