T

his first volume of 2019 emphasizes the strength exhibited by a community that comes together. Sometimes, it is difficult to look to our neighbor for help. It can be cumbersome or even downright scary to feel that close to defeat. But, if we let down our guard, and remove the armor to accept a friend or a helping hand, it’s the most crucial, most inspiring part of the process; it’s at this moment that crushed coal becomes diamonds.

These are stories of resilience. They are of shared responsibility and gratitude that pave the way for happiness. This is about a community that’s asking and answering the questions we have in our dreams and everyday life, which is maybe what’s most inspiring. To be truly resilient is to hold on to the truth and see it through, which is exactly what’s happening here, and it’s fantastic.

radition and history, what powerful words.

Tradition, in practice, is often a behavior passed down that holds symbolic meaning. It makes us think of family, culture, school, or a place and time significant to us. What do you think of? Over the holidays, my family and I went to San Antonio for the first time. If you haven’t been, I’ll be honest, The Alamo is WAY smaller than what the movies make it out to be.

However, after taking in all of the history that surrounds that place, it made me want to make the trip a family tradition.

The question I have for you is what traditions are you creating or carrying on right now? What is something you want your future family to remember? For me, it’s simple. It’s Jesus. Early on I

learned from John 14:6, that Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through him." This was taught to me, and it’s a truth I choose to live, as well as a part of me I want to pass down to my three boys.

DID YOU KNOW? An art juror is typically an educator and artist in their own right.

Examining interests, trends, social patterns, events, and news, all current, past and future through the lens of others educates us about others’ experience. To grow intellectually, it is imperative to gain as much knowledge of others’ experience as possible, in tandem with our own. All experiences considered, we are now more educated, and possibly an even more empathetic contributor for our peers. Visiting art exhibitions, meeting artists and enthusiasts, and gaining context through demonstration is an opportunity for greater understanding that the Arts Council brings to Brownwood each year.

2018 welcomed the 20th annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit to Brownwood. The exceptional quality of work and artists this event brings is remarkable. 154 artists entered a total of 347 pieces of artwork. Media included painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and digitally prepared art, excluding video. Primarily funded by the City of Brownwood, the Arts Council of Brownwood also receives private grants, as well as grants from the Texas Commission of the Arts whose mission is “to advance

our state economically and culturally by investing in a creative Texas.” The idea is that the arts improve our quality of life, enhance education and strengthen curriculum, and boost the local economy as creative endeavors create jobs because they increase tourism and commerce to a vital, sought-after region.

Brownwood native Ann Jones, alongside Kay Leipzig, had a lot to do with the exhibit’s inception. Leipzig had been instrumental in the restoration of The Depot Civic and Cultural Center, which at that time (1998) was just about to be complete. Ann bumped into Kay downtown and Kay informed her that she was preparing for a gala to open the Center. She shared with Ann that she was stumped on finalizing the evening’s activities and that she was also concerned with all the blank space on the new walls. Ann (admittedly without much of an arts background) suggested, “Well, why don’t you do an art exhibit?” Weeks later, Ann hadn’t considered much more into their conversation when she received a call from Kay. Kay had presented the idea to the board and the board not only loved the idea, they wanted Ann to chair it.

While Ann was a Brownwood native, for decades she had worked and lived in Plano, Texas.

Only recently moving back to Brownwood, she found herself as chair to this event and initially felt overwhelmed with the responsibility. However, Ann, amongst many other admirable talents, is resourceful. She reached out to Dr. Dale Wheelis, a friend and community member she knew had a pulse on the creative community because of his work with “Keep Brownwood Beautiful”.

Amongst the contacts he shared were Brenda Shaw, Sandra McSwaine, and Mary Cadenhead.

In the past, these women had attempted juried art shows for Brownwood and had never really succeeded. Notes of the attempts include, “too competitive” and “feelings got hurt.” However, with Ann and the newly renovated Depot, they were wholeheartedly ready to give this idea of a juried art exhibit a chance again.

Plans for the gala broke down as quickly as they came together. Now the Council had no gala, but a juried art show with a call for artists that had already gained significant momentum. Now they scrambled because they needed money, prize money for artists, funding for the exhibit’s activities, refreshments, and so on. But, again, ever

resourceful, they approached their existing network of community influencers, and their city government via the Art Association of Brownwood for assistance. Dr. Steve Kelley and his wife, Sandi who had been instrumental in the Depot renovation, advocated for the committee.

His mother even made 500 Texas-shaped cookies for the inaugural reception. The exhibit prevailed, and despite humble beginnings, it has certainly made its mark as one of the sought after statewide juried visual arts events.

This past year, for the 20th Anniversary, Ann Jones was recognized for her work in helping to found this event and ensure its success so many years ago.

Of the 347 pieces of artwork submitted to the 2018 exhibit, only 97 were accepted. All submissions are carefully considered, and upon installation, juried. Prizes are awarded such as “Honorable Mention”, and media specific awards such as, “Porter Insurance Oil Award”, sponsor specific awards like the “Kohler Award”, and finally, “Best of Show.” An art juror is typically an educator and artist in their own right. A jury can consist of a panel of persons, or only one person. And a juried competition is a competition in which participants' work is judged “by a subjective set of criteria dependent upon the nature of the competition or the judges themselves.”

These regulations are clearly presented in the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit’s prospectus (detailed outline) published online at www.starsoftexasjuriedartexhibit. com. Amongst these guidelines, art is judged on creativity, originality, completion, and quality amongst other influential characteristics.

Art enthusiasts may be familiar with the Salon des Refuses of 1863 in Paris, France. Literally translated, this “exhibition of rejects”, was, in some people’s opinion, a catalyst for the avant-garde movement in fine art as we know it today. Legendary artists, such as Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet, and Camille Pissarro were amongst some of the artists exposed by the Salon des Refuses upon the Salon’s rejection, opening them to ridicule and social mélange.

The Brownwood Stars of Texas exhibit has, along with many other exhibitions since, adopted this idea.

During its inception it was possibly the greatest social suicide, but now, in my opinion, an admirable stand, an innovative way to include everyone and give credit to all participants. A tip of the hat to the underdog, the Salon des Refuses in Brownwood puts up all work that is not accepted to the Exhibit, places them for sale, and acknowledges the artists respectfully.

"Hypothetical"

Art exhibits, while offering greater understanding for the world around us, can sometimes seem mundane, and even one-dimensional for a spectator that’s not familiar. However, the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit is a two week event that is carefully planned for all audiences. Mary Cadenhead, one of the founding members, suggested early on that they offer artist led demonstrations. As you can imagine, viewing a finished piece of art and watching an artist in action are two totally different experiences. Having a chance to witness the technique, meet and listen to the artist explain their process offering context to what they do gives those who may initially feel left out, engaged and interested.

Experience and education is as important to the goers as it is to the participating artists. Entrants are given free admission to art talks where experienced and influential speakers like the 2019 guest, Dan McGregor, Professor of Art, ACU speak about the visual arts and succeeding as an artist, and theorize on ideas about culture and trends.

During the two weeks, classes of students from all over the region visit the exhibition daily. To properly prep the artist demonstrators, every morning, the artist is given the details of groups visiting that day (age, class study, etc.). This way they’re able to tailor the day’s presentation in the most relatable way.

A cultural experience that brings everyone together like this, that creates lasting impressions, will motivate positive change. Whether you walk away enlightened about the process for making a sculpture, meeting an artist that inspires you, reconnecting with moments and influential people, this is a place where the exchange of ideas is encouraged by all. The more time we spend examining the world around us, the better understanding we have of ourselves, inevitably increasing the chance at progress.

..it’s evident that this relatively short six years in history has had a lifetime of influence on the people and the architecture of Brownwood.

D

owntown is the city's central business district. Culturally, a city’s downtown area is a place that provides an identifier for its residents; icons like skylines, parks, public art and local treasures, such as a historic theatre or restaurant all contribute to the sense of who we are.

Development and design of land use is ongoing by local governments. Constantly in consideration, infrastructure basics such as transportation, communication and distribution networks are all vital to the success of any metropolitan area. While basic needs are met, it’s policy makers that prioritize and set the budget for upcoming projects.

Economic profit or loss, historic preservation, renewal and the quality of the life of the residents are all factors that secure the prosperity of the town and its leadership. Truly, the design of a city is at the hands of politicians, but also business owners and the general public. It’s important to consider all angles of the parties at play, various interests will be affected by the plan’s outcome, negatively or positively.

A closer look at the plans implemented for the early 20th century army base, Camp Bowie, will give us a roadmap for Brownwood’s downtown design and intended use. Deep in the heart of Texas, 120,000 acres of ranch land were purchased outright by the U.S. government to create one of the “finest bivouac and artillery areas in the country.” At 2.5 miles away, Brownwood was the closest city to Camp Bowie. As stated in the Pocket Guide to Camp Bowie, “...there are seven theatres, several bowling alleys, and a roller skating rink…

Brownwood is the ‘camp town.’ Most military personnel who have their families with them find living quarters there, but like all other army camp towns, securing housing is difficult...”

In the article, “History of Camp Bowie,” written by Lorene Bishop, she explains, “Camp Bowie, located in Central Texas, was a military training center during World War II. The campsite was one and one half miles south and southwest of the city limits of Brownwood,

Texas. During the years of 1940-1946 it grew to be one of the largest training centers in Texas, through which a quarter of a million men passed.”

A quarter of a million? Can you imagine that? A quarter of a million men, and their wives, and their children and visitors from nearby towns, all right here in the center of Texas, four hours from any major metropolitan area. Brownwood was it! This was the place to be and it’s evident that this relatively short six years in history has had a lifetime of influence on the people and the architecture of Brownwood.

Camp, itself, included recreational clubs, libraries, guest houses, post offices, dry cleaners, barber shops, service and gas stations, a swimming pool, sports courts and fields, golf, bowling alleys, movie theatres, hospitals, dentists, veterinary clinics, legal counsel, and so on. Nearby downtown Brownwood was built to accommodate the activities of at least 100,000 people, their businesses, their entertainment, and for some, housing. For reference, the population was 19,288 at the 2010 census.

In 1946, following the end of the War, the government shut down the Camp Bowie training camp, as the cost associated with it was now seen as superfluous.

Today, the downtown area is still huge, more or less vacant, but these abandoned buildings tell a story of what was, and for some, are a beacon for change.

Unlike so many small to midsize county seats in Texas, Brownwood does not have a courthouse square. More like a large city, it is separated by districts: business, education, central business, residential, civic use, and commercialized shopping.

Started by the City of Brownwood and now spearheaded by Brownwood Municipal Development District, restoration initiatives are currently taking place. This past year, the City enhanced the downtown holiday festivities with banners and much more Christmas lights. For visitors, they’ve initiated a wayfinding sign project to better direct traffic from major highways going through town.

Part of any city planning project includes researching the best intended uses for the land, and in this case, the vacant downtown buildings. These buildings, or “focus properties”, include space for retail, eateries and entertainment. While franchises are considered, the City of Brownwood is refining their focus specifically for small business owners. One way they’re doing this is by updating historic renovation codes to give more flexibility to potential buyers. Stringent historic codes can deter small business owners, as it costs too much money and time to invest in such an endeavor. Also, they’re introducing a building

improvement program where buyers can qualify for up to $20K in reimbursements, furthering incentive to renovate and have a storefront downtown.

As well, to boost more long-term economic stability, the City is looking to attract what’s called “experience retailers.” Particularly, this would be stores whose products are the type, “that you don’t shop for online, [these are products] that you want to touch and feel, [and places] that you want visit and have an experience.” Good examples of these would be gourmet kitchen or food stores and fine textile stores, like a mercantile.

eer and pumpkin spice season are coming to a close, the kids have stopped singing Christmas songs (hopefully), and the thought of a sweet summer vacation is waiting for you every time the sun peaks out.

When the beach is out of budget and reach, a staycation is the answer to all of your problems. The first weekend of spring, when the weather gets above 70 degrees, get those kids out of the house and into the great outdoors.

Lake Brownwood is a 30-minute drive from Brownwood, but why not stay closer to home? Just 10 minutes outside of town is a bayou perfect for easy kayaking, fishing, picnicking and family fun.

It’s proximity is ideal for a spontaneous, afternoon adventure too.

The Pecan Bayou is a slow-moving body of water surrounded by beautiful green grass, wildlife, and, of course, Pecan trees. Hundred-year-old pecan trees to be exact. But the Bayou wasn’t built for recreation.

In the late 1800s a fire destroyed a dozen businesses and the city built the dam so they would have a water supply.

“There were no waterworks, engines or facilities for putting out the fire in Brownwood,” Frank Hilton, Brownwood Historian said. “The City of Brownwood built the old dam on the Pecan Bayou and built the water mains and put in the pump station. On December 9, 1886 a group of citizens organized the Brownwood Volunteer Fire Department now that the city had a means to get water into the town.”

Frank also said that although the pecan orchard is natural, in 1922 the Brownwood Rotary Club planted 1,000 pecan trees in Brownwood as one of their first civic projects, rooting the Pecan Bayou

further into Brownwood’s history.

“I've enjoyed being out on the water, fishing, and the diversity of resources,” said John Holland, Lake Brownwood State Park Superintendent. “History of the bayou goes back to before records were kept, people have been drawn by the water and natural resources. We have a wide variety of plants and animals.”

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) website says, The Pecan Bayou is fed by Lake Brownwood and a favorite spot for bird watchers looking for Eastern Bluebirds, Great Horned Owls, Woodpeckers, and Mallards. Whatever activity you indulge in beware that the Pecan Bayou is surrounded by private property. Be on the lookout for signs, purple paint, and fences signifying private property.

“We see local visitors out to fish, swim, picnic, hike, bike and just meet friends,” said Holland .“Visitors from across the state and out of state come for the same activities. By definition bayous are stream beds with water that has little or no significant flow, more common around coastal areas.

“Pecan Bayou is considered to be the westernmost bayou,” Holland said. “How it has kept that designation, no one seems to know. How it got the name is most likely from early visitors or settlers to the stream in Brownwood where there is very little elevation change.”

The Bayou is controlled by dams and can be paddled in either direction in a three mile loop up river and a four mile loop downriver toward the dam. Debbie Morelock, owner of the Star of Texas Bed and Breakfast and avid paddler says that it takes about an hour and 45 minutes, depending on conditions, to paddle the entire trail.

“Because of the series of dams along the way, if you put in at Fabis Park and head towards the lake you will be paddling up stream and it will take about an hour to make that slow route, then turn back around and head back to the take out, or float it down stream towards the dam and again about a 45 minute float,”

Morelock said. “You can portage over the dams and go further, but I do not recommend it.”

Morelock also warns to be cautious of underwater logs and trout lines when swimming and paddle boarding. Boats are also welcome with a boat ramp at Fabis Park, but since the area isn’t very wide a small trolling motor is suggested.

According to TPWD's website, fishermen can expect to see, and hopefully catch, large and smallmouth bass, catfish, and brim. TPWD suggests using small lures, plastic worms, spinner baits, and a lite-line.

There are eight campsites at Fabis park that you can reserve by going online to www.brownwoodtexas. com. Fishing licenses are available at Walmart, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (on main street), and at the State Park office. Kayaks can be rented from Bayou Kayak Rentals, locally owned, 325-642-4951.

Eric Evans hasn't always lived in Brownwood, but Brownwood has always lived in his heart.

A fifth generation Brownwoodian, Eric and his family have spent much of their lives helping make Brownwood a place of which they can be proud. He is now the managing director of the Lyric Theatre,

yet another way to enhance the atmosphere of the place he loves to call home.

"I like to describe the streets of Brownwood as a combination of horse-drawn wagons and Model T’s traversing the same space in front of the Lyric," Eric said.

After 18 years away from Brownwood, Eric returned with his wife Jill in 1999. They live on the family ranch. He made it a goal to be involved as much as possible in shaping Brownwood positively.

Eric's great-great grandfather was among the first 10 families to settle in Brown County. Eric, 55, attended Brownwood ISD schools through his graduation from Brownwood High School in 1981.

Then, Eric entered into his passion, music. He had piddled with theatre at Brownwood High, but it was in college he became serious, receiving a music education degree, along with a piano performance degree. He spent a few years as a band director before getting involved in vocational church ministry.

And five years ago his true calling surfaced. He became managing director of the Lyric.

"I have always had a fascination with the performing arts and have seen with my own eyes the transformation it can have upon people and community," he said. "I will say that I do know how to surround myself with people that have extensive experience and education with

theatre and am a quick learner."

Eric may not have realized it younger in life, but his dream was to revive the legendary Lyric, which originally opened in 1914 as a vaudevillian-styled space.

Then, fate stepped in, as it is wont to do, and provided a helping hand.

"Back in 2002, I was invited to come visit the owner of Pats and Genes (a local successful dress shop), Jessie Hamilton.

She led me to a door inside her office, and as I stepped through, to my amazement was this cavern of space that included a balcony, stage, proscenium, raked house floor filled with items of storage and an airplane," Eric recalled. "My two friends (Dr. Nancy Jo Humfeld, director of theatre and communications at Howard Payne University, and Danny Ingram, a local minister of music) formed an idea and started a 501 c(3) named the Lyric Performing Arts Company and purchased the Lyric.

"Fast-forward through 12 years of fundraising, theatre productions, more fundraising, spending just over $3.5 million and 100 years after opening, we reopened the Brownwood Lyric Theatre."

And it's going stronger than ever, creating new memories - or adding to the many from before.

"One of my favorite moments in the restoration process of the Lyric was when a lady named Linda, who was offering her store as a 'dressing room' for an initial musical performance of 'Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella,' was standing on the orchestra level of the yet-to-be-restored theatre with her hands on her hips staring into the balcony shaking her head back and forth," Eric said.

"It was obvious she was remembering something very special. I said to her, 'Linda, what are you thinking?' and she said, 'I’m just remembering when me and my husband used to sit up in that balcony

and just neck.' I had a bit of a tear in my eye. Everyone loves the theatre for one reason or another."

Humfeld credited Eric for being the driving force behind "some of the most wonderful things in Brownwood."

"He has a vision for what the Lyric can bring to the community and the surrounding areas. He has helped a number of other organizations through the years with various projects," she said.

"He has helped bring new business to Brownwood and is a visionary for what Brownwood can be."

Being in charge of the Lyric also feeds into Eric's hobbies, music and historic downtowns.

Eric's family, the Baughs, has a long history of effecting positives in their area since their arrival as pioneers in the mid1800s. It was a rough environment, but one that opened the door for Eric to be able to do what he does best today.

"He has a vision for what the Lyric can bring to the community and the surrounding areas. He has helped a number of other organizations through the years with various projects," she said. "He has helped bring new business to Brownwood and is a visionary for what Brownwood can be."

"I now have the privilege to help the central Texas communities experience the performing arts in a state-of-the-art historically restored theatre. I still get goose bumps," he said. "We literally are seeing over 10,000 people annually attend a show, from all over the country. There are people within this area with a great deal of talent and desire getting to use this talent/ability on the stage through the performing arts when there are few to no opportunities otherwise available. I see their joy, excitement and appreciation at levels that are just humbling to me."

Lake Brownwood now resides where his great grandfather’s barn use to rest. Eric likes to think that bringing quality performing arts to the community on a regular basis will also be transformational, just as the lake has made a huge difference.

But to label Eric as just the managing director of the Lyric is to limit his impact on the community. He's been a member of the BISD Board of Trustees for the past 11 years, is part of the historic downtown district working to revitalize that area, on the board of the Education Foundation, and is part of the tourism team of Brownwood.

"Eric’s passion for the arts is evident in everything he does, and his love for Brownwood shows in all he puts his hand to," said Sunni Modawell, executive director of the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce.

"The thing that stands out to me about Eric is

that his passion for Brownwood and his drive to improve the community is evident in everything he does," said Ray Tipton, executive director of economic development for the Brownwood Municipal Development District. "His accomplishments in the community through his service and spirit of volunteerism has touched many lives for the better. He is a tremendous asset to Brownwood and I appreciate his willingness to serve."

And he does it all to help keep Brownwood moving into a more progressive arena.

"I do think it is difficult for smaller rural communities to embrace the 21st century in ways that help us think of life and people beyond our little space. The arts, tourism all play a part in helping us think and ponder what it is to let the tough part of the past be better," he said.

"When people live in a cocoon it is very difficult to see the angst of life and reality of hurt and pain people feel outside. Politics today only breed selfish preservation, and when people know, live alongside of those that are different our perspective changes, usually for the better."

And, of course, theatre helps this "living" happen. After all, what is theatre but the telling of stories in its own special way.

"The living of the stories are all part of the rhythm of the community," he said. "When one can do this well and others appreciate it, I believe you help move your community forward."

Today Just Got a Little More Interesting...

I

n the air, on the ground and even underground, the City of Brownwood employees work hard every day to protect you and your quality of life. Most of the ways that city employees serve is unseen. In an effort to not only educate the public on their city’s infrastructure, but integrate a core value program designed to last, the City of Brownwood has developed two programs that work to create a cohesive call to action and also showcase it. Marshal McIntosh spearheaded #BrownwoodToday, a social media campaign that brings attention to City jobs and the extraordinary work performed by individual city workers all year long. Emily Crawford, over the last two years, collaborated with her team to develop I SERVE, a core values concept that establishes a code of ethics to work and live by.

As the assistant director of economic development, Marshal McIntosh is passionate about progressive projects that open doors for citizens and establish economic longevity. #BrownwoodToday does just that as it showcases the individual, and also the job. #BrownwoodToday is a photo series published on the City of Brownwood’s Facebook. In each photo, employees

are pictured holding a sign that explains what they did for the city that day. For example, “Meet Phillipe Foix, Fire Driver...” Phillipe is pictured in uniform holding a sign that says, “Today I trained for better air consumption #BrownwoodToday.”

One year ago, Marshal pitched the #BrownwoodToday idea to city manager Emily Crawford.

The campaign has been well received from healthcare, to police, fire, and street crews, water maintenance and employees delivering food to senior citizens.

It is creating a connection that is most desirable for the city staff. You get to know your fellow neighbor in a Brownwood City uniform, as well as the intricate processes that are always at work.

In addition to celebrating daily successes, the Brownwood City Council tasked Emily Crawford with creating a “user-friendly, customer minded organization”, a standard to implement that

would give city employees a code to adhere to and reinforce through their actions. Emily Crawford collaborated with her team and conceived I SERVE core values. She explains: “The process of defining Core Values was lengthy. We started with department heads who made a list of 15 character traits to describe an ideal public servant.

We then surveyed all city employees for input. Finally, a small focus group narrowed down the options. The focus group selected six characteristics in the acronym, “I SERVE.” The letters stand for: Integrity, Service, Excellence, Respect, Vision and Empathy. Each trait is one that every employee may embody, regardless of title or job description. The beauty of the acronym is that it states our fundamental mission as well. The I SERVE core values were adopted by the City Council in December of 2017.”

I SERVE creates a solid and relatable image that the city employees have taken on with pride and enthusiasm. Since its inception, city government has included them in new employee orientation, annual evaluations, and annual service awards.

Emily Crawford pointed out, “We are building a culture of quality service through character.” She added, “We hosted our first ever I SERVE Core Values Awards in November [2018]. There were 65 nominations for 10 categories. Department Heads were not eligible for nomination, as we wanted the acknowledgement to go only to front line staff. It was a highlight of the year for me to recognize 20 of my co-workers for outstanding service.”

One very special example of the I SERVE mindset is about a local senior and her lost wedding ring. Upon the discovery that she must have lost it in her recycling bin, she contacted the city in hopes they’d be able to help somehow. They answered her call and more. City employees determined what time her recycling was picked up, and with that information, narrow it down to three large bails that were processed during that time at the landfill. Literally searching for a nee-

dle in three very large haystacks, Todd along with the rest of City of Brownwood landfill employees found the 50 year old wedding ring and returned it to its very humbled and happy, rightful owner.

The work of a municipality can seem mundane. This day and age, one spends little time thinking about water supply, utilities, waste management, safety, and so on. The work of city employees is underappreciated and oftentimes, misunderstood. Marshal, Emily and the City of Brownwood set out to characterize city work, define values in order to implement a consistent and positive culture and find a way to open the curtain to an otherwise behind the scenes operation. #BrownwoodToday is a digital campaign that is relatable and relevant, it also tells a true story.

It has an instant effect on the community coupled with social media’s power to spread news fast. I SERVE is a core values concept with the potential to last as the core pillars to work and live by for years to come. Both create a more defined sense of self for Brownwood citizens, and the opportunity to identify with the cohesive vision and decision making processes within the walls of the City of Brownwood and beyond.

WINTER AND SPRING GARDENING

entral Texas sits in Zone 8a of the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone. Zones are based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones. Brownwood’s average minimum temperature is recorded at 10 - 15 degrees Fahrenheit. These zones are the standard by which gardeners can best determine which produce are likely to grow in their specific location.

Winter is the perfect time to plan the vegetables to grow in the sunny spring. Gardeners everywhere are starting to think about which seeds they want to plant when the weather turns warmer.

In Zone 8a, gardeners can start planting many seeds as early as February and throughout May. While green thumbs will have to wait to harvest many plants until closer to the summer, some will be ready as early as mid-april.

TexasBank Holiday Classic returns

A

s Brownwood Lions varsity head boys basketball coach Nadir Dalleh watched his team in last year's TexasBank Holiday Classic, the 1993 Brownwood High graduate couldn't help but race back in his mind to his own time on the court playing in his hometown tournament.

"I remember growing up watching this tournament and eventually being able to play in the tournament. It was so much fun watching teams from other parts of the state that you may not get to see on a regular basis," Dalleh recelled. "I felt when I took over as head basketball coach two years ago, and along with Roland, Soto who is also a Brownwood graduate, that we needed to bring it back. It brings a lot of revenue to our community and it gives the community something to do during the Christmas break."

So, work began on reviving the tournament, which was dormant from 2010 to 2016. This year's

tournament was scheduled for Dec. 27-29 with games played at Brownwood High School's Warren Gym and the Brownwood Coliseum on the campus of Howard Payne University.

"Being able to play in the Brownwood Coliseum was something that was very special," Dalleh said.

"We are lucky that we are able to partner with Howard Payne and the City of Brownwood to be able to play in a great and historic facility like the coliseum. As a player it was special, and now being able to coach my high school in the same tournament is very special to me."

Soto, a 1996 BHS graduate and former Lions basketball player, also has fond memories of the tournament as a youth. In January of 2017 Soto became the Brown County sports director. He was sad to see the tournament had ceased, and made it a top priority to bring it back.

"I went to Priddy High School but I would always hear about how big and competitive the tournament was. When I was at Howard Payne (as a player) we got to watch a few of the games, and it was always exciting to watch the level of competition," she said, adding that she is honored to have been coaching in the tournament for the first time last season.

"To be able to get 10 teams was huge. The stands were filled every time a girls game was going on," she said.

As much as the tournament was a tradition, tournaments need funding to survive. Enter TexasBank as the title sponsor.

"It is very expensive to keep a tournament like this going, and we are very grateful that we have had our sponsors step up and revive this great tournament," Dalleh said. "With last years success, they will continue to be that."

The one thing the tournament didn't provide last season was a championship game for either

the boys or girls divisions. Because of icy roads, those games were decided by a coin flip, with Lampasas winning the boys title and Denver City taking home the girls trophy.

This year's tournament will feature a dozen teams in the boys division and 10 among the girls.

They will compete in pools before being placed in bracket competition, depending on how they fared in their respective pools. Each team is guaranteed four games.

The list of girls teams entered, along with the Lady Lions, includes Coleman, Richland Springs, Goldthwaite, Abilene Cooper, Fort Worth Nolan Catholic, Fort Worth Trinity Valley, Gorman, San Saba, and Gatesville.

Boys teams entered this year, along with the Lions, include Cisco, Coleman, De Leon, Dublin, Goldthwaite, Midland Greenwood, Lampasas, Llano, Rio Vista, San Angelo Saints, and San Saba.

And this is not an easy tournament, the coaches said.

"My goal is that we can continue this tradition in a way that 50 years from now, people will be sharing with others about their great memories of this tournament as well."

"The tournament will be pretty good competition with teams in all different classifications. I think that it will be a good final test before district starts," Hohertz said.

"The tournament was very competitive last year. Teams were able to see how different parts of the state plays, and there were many games that went down to the final buzzer," Dalleh said. "With the UIL having a mandatory five-day closing of gym facilities over Christmas, this tournament is a great opportunity to get back going before district play begins."

Another great part of hosting the tournament, the coaches agreed, is that it allows the players to compete in a tournament while also enjoying the comfort of their own homes at night.

"I love that we are able to host a tournament. The kids don’t have to travel and get to enjoy other games that we would normally not see," Dalleh said. "We finished third last year, and our guys are already talking about winning it this year. It is a pride thing with them."

Likewise, the Lady Lions were third last year.

Hohertz has fond memories of her time playing at the Brownwood Coliseum for Howard Payne.

She's excited her players have that same opportunity, thanks to the tournament.

"I think for my team it's nice for them to experience playing in the Coliseum, and also get to sleep in their own bed and not have to be on the road traveling," Hohertz said.

Soto said one of his most memorable moments of last year's tournament was sitting down with Big Country Hall of Fame radio announcer Dallas Huston, the long-time voice of the Lions, and discussing the tournament's previous history of more than five decades.

"My goal is that we can continue this tradition in a way that 50 years from now, people will be sharing with others about their great memories of this tournament as well," Soto said.

Originally founded over thirty years ago, as the Foundation for Excellence, the group reorganized in 2014. In 2016, they changed the name to Brownwood Education Foundation (BEF), and clarified their vision: “to provide Excellence in Teaching awards to BISD staff during yearly ceremonies, in conjunction with the BISD Administration, and to fund teacher/staff appreciation efforts throughout the year” and goals: “to secure resources from the

private sector and distribute them via grants to support innovative teaching within the district.

These grants will be distributed by an application process and will fund curriculum, supplies, technology and out-of-the-classroom trips not typically funded through local, state or federal budgeting.”

When asked why he likes participating in the BEF, Vice-President Eric Evans said, “I believe in public education and I also believe that in the current financial and political climate, public education is underfunded and that this under funding is a significant problem in the public educational environment. The Foundation has the ability to help bridge this gap and make positive impacts in the lives of our students and teachers that are measurable and life-changing.”

Over 400 people attended this year’s gala, making it a huge success.

Board President Mike Smith said, “The Foundation’s primary fundraiser is the annual Gala. We make it our only event so we that our supporters know we will be asking for their support only once a year. There are many worthy causes to give money to, and we want to be respectful of the constant pressure on businesses and individuals to give. That said, we are actively working to put in policies and procedures for receiving gifts through estate planning.

There are people and trusts that are always looking for worthy causes to leave gifts to. We think the Foundation would be a good option, so we are working to put in a system to be ready to receive those types of gifts. And of course we are open to receiving gifts of any amount from any person or entity at any time of year. This occasionally happens and donors have the option of requesting where the gift should be used, such as for fine arts, science programs, or career and technical education programs.”

Over 400 people attended this year’s gala, making it a huge success. Perini Ranch in Abilene catered the

event providing prime rib with all the fixings and bread pudding for dessert. Held in the Brownwood Airport hangar, Brownwood High alums Van Wilks, an internationally known “blues rock” guitarist, and Josh Smith provided outstanding entertainment.

They played acoustic and electric blues for the “Louisiana Saturday Nights” theme.

A core team from BEF helps facilitate approximately fifty volunteers who work throughout the year to organize the Gala. It will take a few weeks to get the final numbers, but the foundation is expecting a record revenue of $100,000 through sponsorships, donations and purchase of auction items. The Auction alone brought almost $30,000. The biggest bid item in the live auction was the Mini Blue Healer generating $5,000, which was donated by a current student at Brownwood High School who wanted to give back to the Foundation,. The Estes Park Stay brought in $2,800. On the silent auction, Ingram Concrete items totaled $2,100 and Toni McMillan's various items totaled $1,170.

These funds give the Foundation many more opportunities to provide grants, recognition and other assistance for the betterment of teachers and students at Brownwood ISD. This would not have been possible without the generosity of local businesses and the community. BEF expresses deep gratitude to those who donated and to all who participated in helping to provide a wonderful auction experience.

Sponsors are just too many to name, but some of the main ones included: Wright Asphalt, Hendrick Medical Center, Texas Bank, Haynes Law Firm, Citizens National Bank, Waldrop Construction, 3M, Kohler and Ingram Concrete.

After Gala expenses, remaining funds, along with Alumni and general donations, will be used in Educational Grants in specific classrooms working with students. A portion of the funds also go to Excellence in Teaching awards at the end of the school year as well as help pay for a portion of our Executive Director's salary and their investment of time developing potential donors, alumni and working alongside BISD administrative personnel to help make the most impact out of the funds received.

Grants are awarded directly through the “grant request” process. All requests will be funded as long as funds are available. Mike Smith said, “If you know anything about public education it is that they are constantly under pressure to adapt and change to meet the needs of students. We have received a generous gift from the N.B. Bunin Foundation to be used specifically for STEM (science, technology, education, math) programs, so we are very pleased with that. But we hope to be able to increase grants for fine arts, languages, and career training programs.”

Recipients for Excellence in Teaching awards are nominated and selected through BISD Administration personnel through a criteria formula. Faculty and Staff are selected from each campus area.

Awards are presented at the end-of-year ceremony at the high school auditorium where every district employee is present. Members of the Foundation are also present to give out both cash awards, plaques and other gifts to recognize the teachers. Throughout the year, “I love the Teacher Appreciation Efforts” give teachers a boost. They may include a drink cart of their favorite beverage delivered to the classroom or special meals provided at various times. Teachers work hard every day, and it’s thoughtful to recognize their efforts in tangible ways.

Smith said, “This is a very exciting and fun event because there is a lot of energy from the teachers. It is clear that teachers are very supportive of each other and it is nice to see them applaud and scream loudly when their fellow colleagues are honored. Honors and recognition are also given for years of service, for any degrees or certificates district employees have earned or other special training that they may have attended.”

BEF Board Members are nominated through current Board members and affirmed by a majority vote of the Board after vetting by the Executive Committee of the BEF Board. There is currently no time limit for Board member service. Most Board members will serve with willingness and desire to make a measurable positive impact upon the educa-

tion of the students of the BISD. There are many ways to help the Brownwood Education Foundation in their efforts to support the students and teachers of BISD. From serving as a Board Member to volunteering at their office, from attending the Gala to donating online….they want and need your help!!

T

he fans who filed into Early’s Longhorn Stadium donning pink shirts for Pink Out Night raised more than breast cancer awareness.

They raised the spirits of a family whose lives had recently been turned upside down by a diagnosis of cancer.

As a longtime employee with the Early Independent School District, Counselor Kim Horton had seen the district, community and even the county come together for hurting families. In 2015, fans from both Early and Bangs raised more than $13,000 at a pulled pork fundraiser held during a basketball game for Braden Summers, an Early ISD student who had been taken to Cook’s Children’s Hospital with the flu. During the 2017 Brown

County Youth Fair, a group of businessmen came together to raise $31,000 to purchase Cade Perkins’ division-winning fine wool lamb. Perkins has faced multiple health issues including leukemia. Faculty and students at Early ISD are currently raising funds to help longtime robotics coach and beloved science teacher Keith Taylor win his battle with cancer.

However, for Horton, the Oct. 12 Pink Out game between the Early Longhorns and Eastland Mavericks was different. This time, it was personal. Those hundreds of fans who purchased a pink “Stomp Cancer” T-Shirt from the Early High School drill team and cheerleaders were supporting Horton and her husband, Danny, who is battling metastatic melanoma.

“We were touched,” Kim said as she reflected on how she felt on Pink Out Night. “When this happens to you, it really puts things into perspective.”

While more than $3,100 was raised for her family through the sale of Pink-Out shirts, Kim said it’s the emotional support the community has shown that really lifts her spirits.

“I feel that the emotional and prayer support has been as valuable as the money,” she said. “It has really touched our heart. It keeps us going. We can get through this.”

The Pink Out fundraiser for the Horton family was the idea of Early Belles drill team sponsor Marie Algiere, who approached Kim with the idea back in September. Kim said she was moved by the thought and generosity, as well as the support from her coworkers.

“My school district in Early was amazing,” she said.

The Hortons’ journey with cancer began right after a family vacation to Silverton, Colo., over the summer. On the way home, Danny began to suffer from blurred vision, a condition he attributed to migraine headaches. As he returned to work at Superior Essex, his symptoms worsened to forgotten passwords and trouble with numbers.

“It wasn’t like him, so his coworkers became concerned,” Kim said.

Believing that he was suffering from migraines, Danny checked in to the emergency room at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene on July 26, believing

he would receive a shot and be sent home. Instead, doctors ordered a CT scan and admitted Danny into the hospital.

The CT scan revealed multiple lesions, a blood clot and stage four metastatic melanoma. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that metastatic melanoma occurs when skin cancer (melanoma) spreads, affecting other parts of the body, which in Danny’s case was the brain. “(The doctors) were in shock that he could speak and function,” Kim said.

That functionality did not last much longer, as the cancer would take Danny’s ability to speak, and he would lose control of the right side of his body.

On Aug. 5, doctors performed surgery to remove the cancer.

“He basically had brain surgery,” Kim said.

Following the surgery, Danny spent nearly a month in an Abilene hospital, undergoing therapy and rehabilitation. He underwent blocker therapy for a month and a half and has started immunotherapy. So far, the treatments appear to be working.

“A lot of his lesions have resolved themselves and gotten smaller,” Kim said. “He is definitely a miracle.

God has worked in our lives.”

Kim said three to five years ago, Danny would have had little chance of survival. However, with the latest treatments, he has been able to make significant progress toward recovery.

“We still have a journey ahead of us,” she said, “and we are trying to do it with dignity.”

Kim said that Danny’s progress includes physical rehabilitation and speech therapy.

“It’s coming back,” she said. “Everything is coming back.”

In many ways, the Horton’s journey with cancer mirrors that of the Relay for Life. In many places, the Relay for Life holds a 12-hour relay, beginning at sunset, continuing through the night until sunrise. According to the American Cancer Society’s Web site, the Relay for Life begins at sunset, continuing through the night to symbolize the fear a cancer patient experiences upon being diagnosed. The 12-hour relay concludes at sunrise to show renewed hope as the cancer goes into remission.

For the Hortons, it appears the sun is rising.

“I am in awe of the blessings and watching God work in our lives,” Kim said. “Even in the darkest times, we can see the blessings.”

One of those blessings include how Danny’s cancer has helped bring the Horton family closer together.

“We have two sons that are amazing,” Kim said.

“They came to Abilene and stayed with Danny in the hospital. Through this all, we’ve grown closer and are looking at life differently.”

Another blessing is the comfort and support offered by the Early and Brownwood communities.

“It has really touched our hearts,” Kim said. “We

want the community to know how much we are appreciative of everything.

“We are still going. We could not have done it without the support of our friends, family, community and school.”

Kim said she appreciates all that the community has done, not only for Danny, but for her as his caretaker.

While Danny is responding well to the treatments, Kim said the journey is far from over. Immunotherapy can last for up to a year and there are still many unknowns facing the family.

While Pink Out games were originally designed to raise Breast Cancer Awareness, many schools have attached fundraisers to the games to raise funds for families who have been affected by cancer, or for local organizations who provide cancer treatment or support.

Last year, Early’s Pink Out fundraiser benefitted the Walker Cancer Center at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

In recent years, Brownwood ISD has used Pink Out fundraisers to raise funds for Walker Cancer Center, as well as teachers and students at Brownwood ISD who have been impacted by cancer.

EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT 2018 APRIL 5 - 6 BROWNWOOD COLISEUM Visit www.goodsambwd.org for the 2019 event scheduled for April 4.

The Empty Bowls Project is Good Samaritan Ministries’ (GSM) largest fundraising event each year. The purpose of this event is to bring the Brown County community together for a singular purpose, to fight hunger and advocate for food insecurity; and the empty bowls, a literal representation of the empty bowls of our friends and neighbors.

Ninety percent of proceeds stay in Brown County and support affiliated hunger ministries: Food Pantry, Food for Thought, The Deer Project, Homebound Program, Homeless Food Boxes, the Mobile Food Pantry and The Pig Project. The remaining 10% is donated directly to international hunger relief efforts.

The entire community works together to ensure the success of this special weekend. Preparations for the event start in January with ceramic bowl painting.

Middle and high school students, along with church and business groups, as well as nursing home residents work together to paint the bowls. The HPU Criminal Justice Club, the Yellow Jacket football team and Zephyr High School students completed most of the glazing, and the Kohler Corporation fires all the bowls, 1800 in total. Finally, for the day of, local restaurants participate by donating delicious homemade soups.

Good Samaritan Executive Director Leesa Stephens explains, “Community members from many different walks of life come together with the purpose of raising not only funds to help feed the hungry in our county, but to also raise awareness that we have friends and neighbors with empty bowls and empty stomachs.” (reference Brownwood Bulletin)

In honor of the 25th anniversary of Good Samaritan Ministries (9th for Empty Bowls Project), the 2018 event hosted an additional silent auction with heart-shaped bowls donated by local artisans.

July Abundant Living

In July, GSM launched the Abundant Living Simple Giving Men’s Breakfast. This event is an opportunity to raise funds to purchase items for the Christmas boxes distributed in December. GSM put out a call for 100 men to donate $100 each to help us purchase sugar, flour, eggs and a baking hen for all 950 boxes.

National Night Out

GSM partnered with local law enforcement to have local neighborhoods collect cans of tuna.

There’s even a ‘traveling tuna trophy’ for the neighborhood that collects the most cans. In all, 4330 cans of tuna were counted. Students from the HPU Social Work Club volunteered that night and helped tally the tuna as it came in.

Each summer, families from FBC/Brownwood come one Wednesday night each month for Family Work Night. They volunteer in the Food Pantry, the Food Warehouse and the Resale Store.

#TackleHunger Food Drive

Almost everything we do is made possible by partnerships within the community. This food drive encourages various local groups to collect specific items during October for the Christmas boxes.

Pushing Carts

GSM volunteers wrap up the year by inviting community groups to push carts of food out to the receiving families’ cars. This provides members a chance to truly be “hands-on” in helping their friends and neighbors in need, here in Brown County.

As a special Veteran’s Day activity, employees of the City of Brownwood packed boxes for the Brownwood Senior Citizens Center Mobile Food Pantry and the Food for Thought (Backpack Program).

In November, volunteers from area churches, businesses, sports teams, families and schools donate their time to pack the Christmas boxes that are distributed in December. The HPU Student Athlete Advisory Board is pictured with boxes of pudding and pie filling they collected.

The Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center is one of the area’s most popular attractions. Open during the summer months, key features of the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center includes a slide tower with slide, water geysers, a tot slide, coolbrellas, a pavilion, 4 lap lanes, a diving board, zero entry beach, a current channel, and much more. There is also a concession stand with light snacks, bath house, and small lockers available for rent. The new facility is located directly across the street from Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Hideout Golf Club is located on Lake Brownwood situated on rolling terrain, dotted with numerous lakes and ponds. The golf course, designed

by Bill Johnston, opened all 18 holes July 2008. The Hideout features many well placed bunkers and water features to provide a challenging yet relaxing round of golf. Our four sets of tees accommodate golfers of each skill level. These 18 holes of Championship Golf, while still premature in age is widely considered amongst the area’s best layouts. The practice facility is one of the most all-inclusive in the area. The driving range includes four target greens with varying distances. Included in the practice facility, a 5,000 square foot putting green will boost one’s short game to perfection.

Creekbend Golf Course (previously known as Shady Creek) is a tough, tree-lined course with its namesake creek running through the layout. In fact, water comes into play on six holes. The signature hole is the par 3 No. 7, which features an island green.
