Interview with Karla Jarvis MSN APRN FNP-C 1. What made you get into the medical field ?

When I was a sophomore in high school I knew I wanted to be a pediatrician! I dreamed about it ! Soon I began to want to be a Nurse Practitioner.

2. Where are you from ?

Transplant from Chicago & California.

3. What made you settle in Louisville, KY? Big City but has a small city feel to it!

4. What was the first challenge you had with this pandemic?

In the beginning it was Telehealth, teaching folks how to use it was challenging but now patients love it.

5. What would you say is some of the things that are wrong with healthcare ?

Healthcare disparity. One of the reasons that Covid killed a lot of people is because of mis diagnoses given to people of color. Doctors are not seeing patients thoroughly they are just coming into the room briefly treating symptoms and not the disease.

6. You had Covid 19 what would you say is one of the things that you found out about Covid that you didn’t know before?

Our long-term effects & that you won’t return back 100% . Just because you take the vaccine does not mean it’s a total cure and you will still have to take precautions with wearing your mask and social distancing

7. What advice would you give about the virus?

Covid is a virus that can change overnight and get stronger. Variances happen, please be careful wear, your mask , wash your hands and keep utilizing social distance.

10. Finally if someone wanted to get into the medical field and become a nurse practitioner what would you tell them what would be your advice?

Be prepared & you can do it ! If I can do it and I had a husband , three kids with one child being special needs and a household to take care of , you can do it!

8. What do you do to relax?

My husband and family come first & I love to read books, travel and play with my grandchild.

9. Encouraging words for these challenging times?

I would tell them that you need to find a good doctor because doctors are like shoes you have to find the perfect fit so they can help you with your health care needs.

In My Opinion By: Brian J. T. Watts Being schooled and being educated are two very different things and one is clearly superior. Let me be perfectly clear, when I speak of being schooled, I am not referring to the urban terminology where a person learns a lesson by being embarrassed. (“He schooled you on the basketball court!”).

Every student of an institution is schooled. Attending classes, regurgitating a percentage of the information and matriculating are all it takes to be schooled.

Being educated has many requirements.

First, to truly be educated a student must allow the information being taught to become more than just a simple memory, it must be used and, in some cases, tested. Imagine you want to learn to swim, so you take classes online. You listen to and watch the teacher. You have perfected every stroke, but you have 9

been doing it from your seat at your desk. You have never entered the water.

Have you been schooled or educated on swimming? In addition, education requires

application. While it is fine for a student to know 7 times 7 equals 49, it is much more important for that student to be able to apply this knowledge when purchasing 7 items that cost $7. A simple recitation of the multiplication table will not suffice when “real life” situations occur. Finally, education should cause a person to compartmentalize the information, assess its worth and use it to solve problems. When a person learns karate, they learn many stances. These stances are positions that must be mastered to be successful in achieving higher levels and correctly executing defense and offense when engaged in a fight. All of the karate masters you have seen have broken down what they have learned, prioritized the stances and put

them together in an order that solves the problem of defeating their opponent. It is not enough to stand in front of the opponent and go through each stance.

You will never win that way!

How can you make sure your child is being educated rather than being schooled?

1. Ask questions about what they learned. Discussions will cause them to think deeply about the lessons.

Get ready to assist in quenching that thirst. It will be worth it!

Much of what I have discussed is an application of Bloom’s Taxonomy. It was proposed by Benjamin Bloom many years ago and it assists teachers when they organize lessons into learning objectives. It is one of the foundational methods used in education.

2. Find ways to inject learning into everyday activities. This will make education real and show them they are learning for a purpose.

3. Get involved! TV shows, movies, plays, programs, exhibits and books on various topics will have a positive effect as your child learns. It will increase their attention span, listening and reading comprehension as well as promote cross-curricular learning. Soon they will

begin to connect various subjects and prioritize the things they have learned.

ENCOURAGE! Real, sincere encouragement helps and cannot be replaced with anything else!

Prepare yourselves. For many, a taste of education creates a thirst for knowledge.

LESSONS FROM THE PANDEMIC By: Skip Dillard

VP of National Community Partnerships WBLS/Hot 97 Radio NYC. Lover of music, photography, travel, Theology, great food, reading, technology, pianos and art.

Sitting in our conference room the first week in March, none of us would have dreamed our plan to transition our station’s staffers to working from home for several weeks would still be in place a year later. I’ve personally learned to be more patient, appreciate my health, and take nothing for granted.

Radio has learned that “local matters” and while our industry has never had to adapt to anything this quickly, we’re going to be better and even more relevant as life improves. Our industry has never been busier, supporting our audiences and advertisers through the pandemic, cries for social justice, a most controversial 2020 National election and now vaccine distribution. And the work is just beginning as we climb out of a long “pause” for humanity on so many levels.

A “new normal” is coming and it’s going to be crucial that all of us work together to adapt and bring positive change, while restarting our economy which will lead to new jobs, better business ownership opportunities and use of technology to make us healthier!

Long haulers are patients that had COVID-19 and are experience symptoms after they are negative for the disease. It’s not just our hospitalized patients we have to focus on. There are a lot of patients out there who can still continue to have these persisting and really life-altering symptoms.

The most common long hauler symptoms include: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Coughing.

Ongoing, sometimes debilitating, fatigue.

Body aches.

Joint pain.

Shortness of breath.

Loss of taste and smell — even if this didn’t occur during the height of illness.

Difficulty sleeping.

Headaches.

Unsteady on your feet.

At this point we can’t determine the average age or predict who may have 23

long-term symptoms. As with many other COVID-19 issues, it’s hard just knowing how long some of the symptoms might last when the disease was identified barely 10 months ago.

We have to discover what we can about the disease and how to treat it, and that takes time and experience. Then we all have to share the information with other health care providers and the public. We don’t have that system of sharing in place yet for long-haulers. We do know at this time something

HELP! By: Rev. Daniel Gray Host of In His Word Program In His Word Ministries

That one word cries out crisis and danger and the need for immediate assistance and deliverance from certain calamity. HELP implies dire circumstances that are sure to put us under if someone doesn’t come to the rescue right now! In the midst of a pandemic the whole world seems to be screaming, can anyone help, is there a solution, where’s the escape, is there any hope for rescue or resolution?

Psalm 121:2 declares “My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth”; Psalm 46:1 declares “God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble” Nothing takes the creator and the keeper of all things by surprise. He is ever in control and is well able to provide, protect, deliver, guide, and restore regardless of the situation we find ourselves in. All He asks is that we trust Him completely and give everything into His capable hands. His delight is to rescue, restore, heal, deliver, forgive, and set free all those who put their trust in Him.

Psalm 138:3 declares “In the day when I cried you, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul”. Cry out to Him and He will answer me. Put your trust in Jesus and He will save you out of your troubles.

John 3:16 declares “God so loved the world He gave His only son (Jesus) so that whoever believes in Him won’t perish but have everlasting life”. The HELP is here for you, just call out to Him and Help is present.

Listen, before you can make anything happen in your life, it requires a mindset change. Every day we are faced with decisions to work on different areas in our life. Once I made a decision to work on myself, then everything began to fall in place.

decisions. Different mindsets are an important part of your toolkit for success.

You must foster positive thoughts of credit, wealth and abundance. If you dwell on the negative, you’ll get discouraged and give up on your dreams.

One you choose, one you are born into, and the other you earn (well most of us have to earn it).

We have to be aware of and manage all three!

First is Faith!

Faith is the assurance that the things revealed and promised in the Word are true, even though unseen, and gives the believer a conviction that he expects in faith, will come to pass.

In other words: “The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Hebrews 11:1 Throughout your wealth building journey you will come across obstacles that seem insurmountable; barriers that appear to be to high to climb. ● ● ● ● ●

Job loss Loan denials Unexpected bills Health problems Etc

These barriers will come when you are tired and discouraged. When your level of discouragement is high and your will is low. You may begin to look at what others have or appear to have, and wonder “what is wrong with me!” ● ● ●

Why can’t I get out of debt?

Why can’t I build up savings?

When will I stop living pay check to pay check?

The Brookings Institute’s Hamilton Project found in their 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances; that the wealth gap between black and white households is staggering. Their research reveals that the median household net worth for black families is $24,100 verses $188,200 for white households.

To me this is “Same story different day!”

I can understand how this type of report and all the media discussion about it can be overwhelming. And it is during this period of uncertainty that you can fall victim to schemes, cons and empty promises. Well at this time I suggest you just stand still

The phrase “It takes a village” is certainly over used and under utilized!

The leaders of the family are responsible for establishing the process; as well as developing and educating family members to take on various roles in managing and growing the families wealth. That means retaining professionals such as; financial advisors, CPA’s, attorney’s and even Therapists.

But at the end of the day; it all starts with Faith! Mustard seed kind of faith!

Every member has a role in the process of building family wealth.

And what can you do right now to start change in your situation.

“If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain,’Move from here to there’, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Second is Family!

Every family member needs to see the big picture and take ownership in the long term wealth goals of the family.

Establishing a private family bank, owned by a family trust makes it perpetual.

Funding it with monthly contributions

from family members and life insurance proceeds, makes it viable.

But if there is no emotional commitment, structure, documentation or comprehensive financial plan. The efforts will be in vain.

So remember; a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step!

Start beginning Wealth today!

And finally there is Finance No matter how hard it has been in the past, or how bleak it looks now. Just know that every problem has a solution!

Umami Five Cheese Mac & Cheese Servings: 4 Ingredients: 1 small Spanish onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 6 oz Oyster Mushrooms, rough chopped 1 TB + 4 TB Haute Pantry Garlic Mushroom Olive Oil 2 tsp Haute Pantry Smoked Sea Salt 1 box of elbow macaroni ( if you want to be fancy use Cavatappi Pasta, it's spiral-shaped and I just love it) 4 cups of milk ( you can use half & half or heavy cream if that is your preference) 4 TB flour 5 oz + 1 oz smoked gouda, shredded 5 oz + 1 oz cheddar, shredded 5 oz + 1 oz smoked Gruyere, shredded 6 oz Parmigiano-Reggiano, shredded 6 oz mozzarella, shredded Ground white pepper 1 egg, whisked Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Heat 1 TB oil over medium heat in and medium nonstick pan. Add onions and cook until translucent. Add the mushrooms and garlic and saute for about 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and set aside.

Cook pasta al dente, per package instructions.

Let's make the sauce: Heat 4 TB of oil over medium heat in a saucepan. Add flour and whisk for about i minute. Add the milk and slowly bring to a simmer, whisking frequently. Once the sauce starts to thicken, remove it from heat and slowly add in the shredded cheeses. Season with sea salt and pepper to taste.

Combine the cooked noodles, mushrooms, egg, and sauce in a large bowl and pour into a casserole dish. Bake for 30 minutes. Top with the remaining cheese and bake until bubbling and brown on the top.

The flowers begin to bloom. The green leaves begin returning to the trees. The temperatures start to rise as the sun comes out to lighten and brighten the skies more often. Nature is ready for Spring, are you? With all of the uncertainty of the recent months, we have to make strategic decisions but don’t let the negativity of what’s going on around you stop you from living your best life. What safe actions can you take in this new season? What ventures have you wanted to begin that have been delayed that you’re ready to push forth?

Don’t let your passions and purpose be pushed to the back burner. Life is short.

Each day that we are alive, we have a new opportunity to fulfill dreams, achieve goals and transform the world around us.

Here are some suggestions to get you started: Current Status – Before beginning any new projects, where are you now? What all is going on in your life right now?

What is going well and what is not going as well?

Seeds in the Ground – What has been planted in your heart and mind that you are ready to spring forth?

Who is on your team? – Any large venture or project will require help.

There are Fortune 500 companies that hire full-time, part-time and seasonal help. What type of help do you need to get the job done and bring the plan to manifestation?

Road Map – How to get to your ultimate dream will require planning and a road map. Write the vision and make it plain.

Start Where You Start – Do some research. Ask questions. Find a coach or mentor. Find an expert and someone who is where you are trying to go, schedule a consultation, prepare to invest and begin.

Growing something is never easy, will take time and effort but in the end, it will be worth it. Delay is never denial but the more you delay, you deny yourself the rewards that effort, energy, investment and a rate of return can give you. Spring into action, get your seeds in the ground, and reap a great harvest. Let’s go!
