El título de esta edición viene del famoso libro de Tomás Moro “Utopía”, en el cual se utiliza tanto para describir a una sociedad idealista, como para hablar de un lugar que no existe. De la misma forma utopía también se utiliza para referirse a una sociedad que no existió porque no podía existir, la palabra nos habla de un sueño imposible.

ENTRE MUNDOS NOTICIAS Y COMENTARIOS DE LOS

¿Es en realidad un sueño imposible? A través de la historia la humanidad se ha dedicado a soñar. Para quienes no entendían esos sueños y su esencia característica, eran solo expresiones “utópicas” del pensamiento. Ideas tiradas al aire que no nos llevaban a ningún lado. Tiempo después se fueron alineando los conceptos: visión y sueño. ¿Cuál es la conexión entonces entre tener una visión del futuro, sin importar si es realizable o no, y el pensamiento utópico?

Tener una visión del futuro, ya sea realizable o no; es el impulso de

especular utilizando las visiones, deseos, necesidades y sueños personales, es decir construir la visión con esos materiales. Esto es la esencia característica del pensamiento utópico.

Y es también la esencia de esta edición.

En las mentes creativas, el pensamiento utópico puede proveer aproximaciones a posibilidades reales e incluso inventar nuevas formas de interacción social que pueden ser útiles en el futuro. Acá encontrará algunos ejemplos de esto.

Muchos utópicos, reconocen que hay un sufrimiento innecesario que permea a toda la sociedad, pero sin analizarlo cuidadosamente, sin tratar de entender exactamente quién está haciendo qué a quién y por qué, sin examinar el amplio contexto que hace posible esto y sin una pizca de entendimiento de cómo se desarrolló y cómo continúa haciéndolo; sin esto, el acto de creer que algún otro arreglo en el mundo sería mejor, es un puro y simple acto de fe.

NOTE

This issue’s title comes from Thomas More’s famous work, Utopia, where it is used to mean both an ideal society and also one that doesn’t exist anywhere.

Similarly, utopia is used to refer to a society that has not existed because it could not exist; it depicts an impossible dream.

But is it really an impossible dream?

Throughout history humanity has devoted itself to dreams. For those that didn’t get dreams and their characteristic essence, most of these dreams were just utopian expressions of thought, ideas thrown to the air that led to nowhere. After a while, the two concepts of vision and dreams became linked together.

What, then, is the connection between having a vision of the future, whether realizable or not, and utopian thinking?

Having a vision of the future, realizable or not, involves the impulse to speculate about the future using one’s hopes,

wishes, desires, and dreams, and the construction of one’s vision out of just such materials. It is the latter that is the chief characteristic of utopian thinking.

In more creative minds, utopian thinking can also provide the first hints of real possibilities and even invent new forms of social interaction that may prove useful later on. Here you’ll find some examples of this.

Most utopians, of course, recognize that there is widespread and unnecessary suffering in society, but without carefully analyzing it, without trying to understand exactly who is doing what to whom and why, without examining the larger context that makes this possible and getting a sense of how it has developed and is still developing; without all this, the act of believing that some other arrangement would be better in the world is purely and simply faith.

NOTICIAS DE LOS DERECHOS HUMANOS Intimidaciones Entidades sociales exigieron que se investiguen los casos de intimidación en contra de activistas de derechos humanos, principalmente en las recientes acciones contra la sindicalista Melvy Lizeth Camey Rojas y el líder indígena Domingo Hernández Ixcoy.

El FNL exigió al Ministerio Público (MP) investigar de forma eficaz los casos y dar seguimiento a las denuncias presentadas por amenazas de muerte en contra de diversos dirigentes sindicales, para que todos estos hechos no queden en la impunidad.

Diferentes entidades en un comunicado de prensa expresaron su preocupación por los ataques sistemáticos que diferentes líderes y lideresas sociales han sufrido, sin que hasta la fecha, los organismos del Estado, responsables de la seguridad pública, hayan esclarecido.

Estos actos han golpeado a las organizaciones y activistas sociales que trabajan en la defensa del territorio, y han debilitado el estado precario de seguridad ciudadana que padece el pueblo guatemalteco, por lo que exigieron al gobierno de la República adoptar las medidas necesarias para garantizar la vida de los defensores y defensoras de derechos humanos.

Melvy Lizet Camey Rojas, de Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa e integrante del Sindicato Nacional de los Trabajadores de Salud de Guatemala (SNTSG) fue atacada por desconocidos que armados entraron al Centro de Salud del municipio de Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa y le dispararon, ella resultó herida de gravedad, en tanto que el abogado Ricardo Morataya murió en el lugar.

El pasado 4 de julio la lideresa Lolita Chávez, del Consejo de Pueblos K’iche’s (CPK) e integrante del Consejo de Pueblo de Occidente, fue atacada por hombres armados mientras retornaba de una manifestación pacífica a la cabecera departamental de Quiché.

El comunicado afirma que los repudiables ataques golpean a las organizaciones y activistas que trabajan en la defensa del territorio y esto en consecuencia vulnera aún más la seguridad, integridad física y la vida de los defensores y defensoras de derechos humanos.

Monseñor Juan José Gerardi fue asesinado brutalmente a golpes con un objeto contundente que le destrozó el cráneo, la noche del 26 de abril de 1998 en el interior de la casa parroquial de la iglesia San Sebastián, en la zona 1 de la ciudad capital; el crimen del obispo se registró dos días después de haber presentado el Informe del Proyecto Interdiocesano de la Recuperación de la Memoria Historia (REMHI) “Guatemala nunca más”, el cual recopila datos y testimonios sobre violaciones a los derechos humanos durante el conflicto armado interno.

Lima se encuentra recluido desde el 2008 en el Centro Médico Militar, luego de haber sufrido un infarto; el MP no presentó oposición a la medida del juez ya que según el fiscal Vicente Pérez se cumple con todos los requisitos que la ley contempla para otorgar la libertad.

Rechazan Operaciones de Mina Sectores sociales de Santa Rosa de Lima, Nueva Santa Rosa y Casillas, Santa Rosa, en conferencia de prensa manifestaron su desacuerdo con que la mina San Rafael mantenga operaciones en el sector norte de ese departamento. A la reunión, en el salón municipal de Santa Rosa de Lima, acudieron representantes del magisterio, sindicatos, del Consejo Diocesano en Defensa de la Naturaleza y alcaldes de los referidos municipios.

Enrique Arredondo, alcalde de Nueva Santa Rosa, dijo que están en contra de la manipulación que la minera ha hecho en las Olimpiadas de la Ciencia, añadió que ya hace un año que se celebró una consulta popular en la cual la población rechazó las operaciones mineras en Santa Rosa. En esa consulta, el 98 por ciento de la población dijo no a la minería, enfatizó Arredondo.

Madres Jóvenes El Observatorio en Salud Reproductiva (OSAR) y Plan Internacional presentaron un monitoreo de partos entre adolescentes y muertes maternas del primer semestre del año 2012.

Roberto Maldonado, asesor nacional para el tema de derecho sexual y reproductivo y prevención del VHI, de Plan Internacional, explicó que en el primer semestre del año, se han registrado 16 mil 339 partos entre adolescentes comprendidas de 10 a 19 años. De ellos, 1 mil 101 han ocurrido entre niñas de 10 a 14 años y los embarazos entre adolescentes representan el 25 por ciento de los registrados en el país.

“Llama mucho la atención que cada vez ocurren más partos entre niñas menores de 14 años. Es preocupante porque esto implica situaciones legales, a las cuales habría que darles seguimiento”, declaró el asesor.

Condena a Goldcorp El Tribunal Popular Internacional de Salud condenó las actuaciones de la transnacional canadiense Goldcorp, relacionadas con sus proyectos mineros ubicados en Honduras, Guatemala y México, por considerarlas altamente dañinas para la salud, además de ir en contra de la libre determinación de las comunidades.

Según el Observatorio de Conflictos Mineros de América Latina (OCMAL), la implementación de proyectos extractivos mineros han provocado 165 conflictos sociales en América Latina, 35 han ocurrido en el área mesoamericana.

El gobierno canadiense, a través de su departamento de asuntos exteriores y de comercio internacional, así como de la Canadian International Development Agency (Agencia Canadiense de Desarrollo Internacional, o CIDA) y otros mecanismos, interviene directamente en los asuntos de otros gobiernos para lograr un marco legal y un contexto político favorable para la operación de las mineras, destaca el documento de sentencia de ese Tribunal.

El Tribunal Popular Internacional de Salud exigió a la Goldcorp que repare los daños a la salud que ha provocado, al medio ambiente y en general a las comunidades indígenas y campesinas de las localidades donde ha instalado los proyectos mineros.

Intimidations Social organizations have demanded investigations into cases of intimidation against human rights activists, primarily the recent acts against unionist Melvy Lizeth Camey Rojas and indigenous leader Domingo Hernándex Ixcoy.

The FNL (Frente Nacional de Lucha - ´National Struggle’ Front) demanded that the Public Ministry (Ministerio Público, or MP) efficiently investigate these cases and follow up on reports of death threats against several union leaders, to ensure that all of these acts do not go unpunished.

A number of organizations expressed their concerns in a press release about the systematic attacks which various social leaders have suffered without, to date, any resolution from state bodies that are responsible for public security.

These actions have hit organizations and social activists which work in defense of territory, weakening the precarious state of public safety which the Guatemalan people endure, which is why they demanded that the Republic’s government adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the lives of human rights defenders.

Melvey Lizet Camey Rojas from Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa, a member of the Sindicato Nacional de los Trabajadores de Salud de Guatemala (National Union of Health Workers in Guatemala), was attacked by unidentified armed assailants who entered the municipal health center in Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa, and shot her; she was seriously injured while lawyer Ricardo Morataya died at the scene.

On July 4, Lolita Chávez, leader of the Consejo de Pueblos K’iche (Quiche People’s Council, or CPK) and member of the Consejo de Pueblo de Occidente (Western People’s Council), was attacked by armed men as she returned from a peaceful demonstration in the departmental capital of Quiché.

The press release states that the reprehensible attacks hit organizations and activists working in defense of territory, which consequently makes the security, personal safety, and the lives of human rights defenders even more vulnerable.

Regains Freedom Retired Colonel Byron Disrael Lima Estrada, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for being linked to the extrajudicial execution of Monsignor Juan José Gerardi, he

was released early according to the ruling by criminal court Judge Javier Soto Mora after the defense lodged an appeal for early release.

The judge stated that necessary measures should be carried out immediately, in order for the offender to leave prison. As well as Lima Estrada, his son, Captain Byron Lima Oliva, and Sergeant Obdulio Villanueva were also convicted in 2001, while the priest Mario Orantes was convicted of covering up the crime.

Monsignor Juan José Gerardi was brutally murdered by blows from a blunt object, which shattered his skull, on the night of April 26, 1998, inside the parish house of San Sebastián Church, in zone 1 of the capital city.

The crime against the bishop occurred two days after he had presented the Guatemalan Archdiocesan Recovery of Historical Memory project report “Guatemala nunca más” (Guatemala Never Again), which compiled data and testimonies about human rights violations during the civil war.

Lima has been imprisoned in the military medical center since 2008 after suffering a heart attack; the MP didn’t oppose the judge’s measure since, according to the prosecutor Vicente Pérez, all lawful requirements to grant freedom have been fulfilled.

Mining Operations Rejected Through a press conference, social sectors of Santa Rosa de Lima, Nueva Santa Rosa and Casillas, Santa Rosa, have demonstrated their disagreement with the continuation of operations in the San Rafael mine, in the northern sector of the department. The meeting, held in the city hall of Santa Rosa de Lima, was attended by representatives from the teaching profession, unions, the Consejo Diocesano en Defensa de la Naturaleza (Diocesan Council for the Defense of Nature) and mayors of the aforementioned municipalities.

Enrique Arredondo, mayor of Nueva Santa Rosa, said that they are against the mining companies’ manipulation in the Science Olympiad, adding that it has already been a year since the referendum was held, in which the population rejected mining operations in Santa Rosa. In that referendum, 98 percent of the population said no to mining, as emphasized by Arredondo.

Roberto Maldonado, national adviser on the subject of sexual and reproductive rights and prevention of HIV, of Plan Internacional, explained that in the first half of the year, 16,339 births were recorded among adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 years old. Of those, 1,101 of them occurred among girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years old, and teenage pregnancies represent 25 percent of those recorded in the country.

“It’s very noticeable that more and more births are occurring among girls younger than 14 years old. It’s troubling because this involves legal situations, which need to be followed up upon,” said the adviser.

Goldcorp Condemned The International People’s Tribunal for Health condemned the actions of the Canadian multinational Goldcorp, related to their mining projects located in Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico, citing their extremely damaging impacts to health, in addition to going against the free will of the communities.

According to the Observatorio de Conflictos Mineros de América Latina (Observatory of Mining Conflicts in Latin America, or OCMAL), the implementation of extractive mining projects has provoked 165 social conflicts in Latin America, 35 of which have occurred in the Mesoamerican area.

The Canadian government, through their Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, as well as the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and other organizations, directly intervenes in the affairs of other governments to achieve a legal framework and a favorable political context for mining operations, emphasized the Tribunal’s final document.

The International People’s Tribunal of Health demanded that Goldcorp redress the damages that it has caused to health, the environment, and, in general, to the indigenous communities and rural populations of the areas where the mining projects have been set up.

DEL MUNDO EN GENERAL Entre ser y convertirse Blake Nelson Hace varios meses en un aula de Xela, dos grupos de estudiantes de dos escuelas diferentes se sentaron a hablar. Para entender a cada grupo, es preciso explicar que no eran: los primeros no eran perezosos, estúpidos, o biológicamente propensos a la delincuencia y la pobreza. Los otros no eran apáticos o elitistas, ni más interesados en el dinero que otros.

El primer grupo, principalmente de niños indígenas de secundaria con bajos ingresos, fue anfitrión de un grupo de mis estudiantes, los cuales asistieron a una escuela privada cara y se autodenominan ladinos. Si hay esperanza de que la próxima generación de Guatemala será mejor que la anterior, es debido en parte a la intersección de estos dos grupos. Esto no es debido a una expectativa poco realista de que estos niños van a unir sus manos y olvidar el pasado.

La esperanza está en la conversación que deben tener, centrada en una pregunta fundamental: ¿qué tipo de país queremos ser?

Esta pregunta es importante porque es una pregunta que muchas naciones no se han formulado. Israel, por ejemplo, no ha tenido esta conversación por un tiempo largo, y según el periodista Thomas Friedman, ello es una gran razón por la que judíos y palestinos aún no han encontrado una manera de compartir una estrecha franja de tierra antigua. Friedman argumenta que Israel quiere ser democrático, étnicamente homogéneo, y ocupar toda la Tierra Santa; sin embargo sólo puede ser dos de esas tres cosas a la vez. Debido a su actual ocupación a Palestina, toda la Tierra Santa

es “propiedad” de los judíos. Pero sólo a través de tácticas militares fuertemente armadas, lo que hace a Israel, homogénea y completa, pero no verdaderamente democrática. Sin un diálogo abierto así es como va a continuar.

Estos mismos tres temas existen como preguntas sin respuesta en Guatemala. “¿Qué tipo de Pintura: Rene Magritte gobierno debemos tener?”

Guatemala ha sido legalmente democrática desde los años 80, pero una larga lista de presidentes a favor del libre comercio ha impedido cualquier discusión real acerca de qué tipo de democracia debería tener. “¿Qué papel deben jugar los diferentes grupos étnicos?” En el siglo pasado, el gobierno construyó arquitectura grecoromana para enfatizar la herencia europea de la nación.

Ambas decisiones fueron tomadas para hacer a Guatemala más atractiva para los extranjeros, pero la elección de demonizar o enamorarse de los indígenas se salta la discusión sobre quién en Guatemala tendrá acceso a qué. “¿Quién obtiene qué tierra?” Arbenz falló en su intento de redistribuirla en los años 50, las dictaduras militares no la arrasaron toda en los años 80; y ahora la militarización de Pérez puede ser una fachada para los grupos mineros extranjeros que se mueven

por todo el país. Si hay un problema en toda la historia guatemalteca (y latinoamericana), es la lucha por la tierra.

Formularse estas tres preguntas nunca es fácil. La Constitución de Guatemala, una mezcla larga de lo abstracto y lo concreto e innecesario, no va a proveer una respuesta adecuada. Pero mientras que la globalización este aquí para quedarse, viene con una libertad que el mundo de la Guerra Fría no dio a Guatemala: libertad para definir lo que son, no sólo lo que está en contra.

Esa primera conversación con los estudiantes de secundaria exitosamente fue más allá de los estereotipos mencionados anteriormente. El siguiente paso es empezar a hacer algunas preguntas difíciles. No es una conversación de una primera reunión, ni siquiera una segunda. Pero en el futuro cuando estos estudiantes se reúnan, y sé que lo harán, espero que traten de articular, qué quieren ser como nación.

Blake Nelson es un maestro, cineasta y escritor

THE WORLD AT LARGE On Being and Becoming Blake Nelson Several months ago in a Xela classroom, two groups of students from two different schools sat down to talk. To understand each group, it’s helpful to understand who they weren’t: one was not lazy, stupid, or biologically prone to crime and poverty.

The other was not apathetic or elitist, more interested in money than others.

The former group, primarily low-income, indigenous high school kids, was hosting a group of my students, who attended an expensive private school and tend to call themselves “ladinos”. If there’s hope that Guatemala’s next generation will look better than the last, it lies somewhere in the intersection of these two groups. This is not because of an unrealistic expectation that these kids will join hands and forget the past. The hope is in the conversation they need to have, centered on a fundamental question: what sort of nation do we want to be?

This question is important because it’s a question many nations have never asked, and are all the worse for it. Israel, for example, has not had that conversation in a long while, and, according to journalist Thomas Friedman, that’s a big reason why Jews and Palestinians haven’t yet found a way to share a narrow strip of ancient land.

Friedman argues that Israel, which wants to be democratic, ethnically homogenous, and occupy all of the Holy Land, can only truly be two of those three things at any one time.

Because of its current occupation of Palestine, all of the Holy Land is “owned” by Jews but only through strong-armed military tactics, making Israel homogenous and complete, but not truly democratic. Without open conversation, that is how it will remain.

These same three issues exist as unanswered questions in Guatemala.

“What kind of government should we have?” Guatemala has been legally democratic since the ’80s, but a long line of pro-free-trade presidents has stunted any real discussion about what kind of democracy it should be.

“What role should different ethnic groups play?” At the turn of the last century the government built GrecoRoman architecture to emphasize the nation’s European heritage.

Today it covers the airport in glossy photos of exotic women in típica. Both decisions were made to make Guatemala more attractive to foreigners, but choosing to demonize or romanticize the indigenous skips the bigger discussion over who in Guatemala will have access to what.

“Who gets what land?” Arbenz failed to redistribute it in the ’50s, military dictatorships failed to burn it all in the ’80s, and now Perez’ militarization may just be a cover for foreign mining groups moving in all over the country. If there is one great issue in all of Guatemalan (and Latin American) history, it’s the struggle for land.

is not an adequate answer. But while globalization is here to stay, it comes with a freedom that the Cold War world didn’t give to Guatemala: the freedom to be defined by what they’re for, not just what they’re against.

That first conversation with those high school students successfully got past the stereotypes listed above. The next step is to start asking some hard questions. It’s not a conversation for a first meeting, or even a second. But in the future when these students get together, and I know they will, I hope they try to articulate who they want to be as a nation.

OPINIÓN Utopías Fabiola Arrivillaga Hurtado Cuando era pequeña, poco sabía yo de Santo Tomás Moro y su mundo perfecto, su democracia perfecta y su paz. Pero tampoco me hacía falta. En mi diminuta realidad, en medio de todos los terribles conflictos de los adultos, existía una isla, una muy personal, a la que me podía escapar, perfectamente: la rústica librera obsequio de mi abuelo, en la que se mezclaba todo el universo, cómplice de mis evasiones.

Si la Utopía de Moro era producto de su imaginación, aunque no por eso dejó de ser una manifestación de lo más ideal entre los ideales, ¿por qué no habría de serlo todo aquel increíble torbellino de mundos que emergía de mi librera? Si, realmente, la lectura rodeada de juguetes puede, sin duda alguna, convertirse en la tabla de salvación de un infante en este loco mundo de infantes frustrados por dejar de serlo. Lo fue para mí, cuando menos.

Todos los niños tenemos nuestro propio bagaje de utopías pero, ¿cuándo las perdemos? ¿Cuándo desapareció la ilusión de una sociedad justa? Pienso en dos cosas, y no quiero sonar demasiado oscura: el descubrimiento del dinero y de la televisión.

La pérdida de la inocencia. Pero es el mundo real ¿o no? Y tarde o temprano caeremos en él. ¿Significa eso que creer en utopías es no pasar de gente simple, de inocentones o de tontos?

La televisión nos muestra que todo es una cosa y que vale lo mismo que nada, porque es efímera. El dinero nos empuja a creer que cualquier esfuerzo y cualquier felicidad tienen su inicio y fin en las cosas: la calidad de vida, la familia, la salud, hasta la oración tienen un precio en metálico. Y conforme

vamos creciendo, descubrimos que los famosos billetes valen menos cada día, que debemos trabajar más horas y que no podemos darnos el lujo de leer tanto. Nos subimos al tren de la “eficiencia laboral” y tomamos la senda del “éxito” moderno. Y leemos menos, soñamos menos, viajamos menos a nuestra propia versión de Utopía. Poco a poco, los grandes nos llenamos de amargura hasta el día que ocurre lo inevitable: nos quemamos. Entonces nos toca pensar y ver qué tan adultos deseamos ser; si somos inteligentes, sabremos que hay que apagar la tele y esconder la billetera y el celular, sentarnos en el piso, sacar nuestras revistas, nuestros cuentos, buscar un cojín cómodo y renacer.

Y cuando hayamos pensado, seremos fieles a nosotros mismos: la sonrisa será espontánea y se escurrirá, cautelosa, por nuestra cara, para luego convertirse en carcajada.

Sí, la vida parece no ser un cuento de hadas, cuando se está en el mundo de los grandes. Pero en el mundo infantil, la vida es lo que se desea. Por eso creo que la lectura es vital para sobrevivir en esta jungla, en este espantoso quiebre del espacio y el tiempo; porque el niño y la niña que leen gozarán siempre de la imaginación convincente para crear nuevos contextos y resolver conflictos. Eso les dará inolvidables

When I was a young girl, I knew little about Saint Thomas More and his perfect world, his perfect democracy, or his peace, but nor did I need to. In my tiny world, in the midst of the terrible conflicts of adults, there existed my own personal island to which I could make a perfect escape: the rustic bookcase, a gift from my grandfather, in which the whole universe mingled, the accomplice of my escape.

If More´s utopia was a product of his imagination, although this did not prevent it from being one of the most idealistic expressions of all, why couldn’t that incredible whirlwind of worlds that emerged from my bookcase be a utopia as well? In fact, reading surrounded by toys can, without a doubt, turn into a child’s salvation in this crazy world of frustrated children who have given up being idealistic. That’s what it was for me, at least.

As children, we all have our own wealth of utopias, but when do we lose them? When did the hope for a just society disappear? I can think of two things, and I don’t want to sound too gloomy: the discovery of money and of television - the loss of innocence.

But that’s the real world, right? Sooner or later we will fall into it. Does

that mean that to believe in utopias is to be nothing more than simple-minded, naïve, or stupid?

Television shows us that everything is an object and that it is worth nothing, because it is fleeting. Money drives us to believe that every effort or happiness has its beginning and end in things: quality of life, family, health, and even prayer have their price in cash. As we grow up, we discover that those famous bills are worth less every day, that we have to work longer hours, and that we cannot give ourselves the luxury of reading so much. We get on the train of “work efficiency” and take the route of modern “success.” We read less, we dream less, and we travel less to our personal version of utopia. Little by little, grownups fill us with bitterness until one day, the inevitable occurs: we burn out. Then we have to figure out just how adult we want to be. If we are smart, we will find out that we have to turn off the TV, hide the wallet and the cell phone, sit down on the floor, take out our magazines and stories, fetch a comfortable cushion, and renew ourselves.

And after we have thought for a while, we will be true to ourselves: a spontaneous smile will cautiously slip out and then break into laughter.

Life doesn’t appear to be a fairy tale when understood from the perspective of the grown-up world, but in a child’s world, life is what it is wished to be. That’s why I believe reading is vital in order to survive in this jungle, in this frightening breakdown of time and space, because the boy and girl who read will always have an imagination convincing enough to create new worlds and resolve conflicts. That will give them unforgettable moments of happiness. Are they real? Of course! What is real but that which we believe to be?

ECOLOGÍA Red Verde Jenn Summers Xela es una gran ciudad. Y como cualquier gran ciudad, tiene sus problemas. Es parte de un país que hace poco por regular el uso de sustancias químicas tóxicas en la agricultura - de los cuales Guatemala es muy dependiente. Se lucha con la gestión de residuos. Cualquiera que haya caminado por las calles sabe la frustración de maniobrar alrededor de la basura que hay en las aceras.

Los quetzaltecos también sufren por la emisión de los gases que provienen de los innumerables autobuses y otros coches que inundan las estrechas calles. En ocasiones, el residente promedio de Xela tiene la sensación de estar atrapado en una jungla de cemento. ¿Dónde se encuentran los espacios verdes?

Sin embargo Xela también es único por su gran número de voluntarios, organizaciones y empresas que están trabajando para hacer una diferencia en la comunidad. Hay organizaciones que trabajan en agricultura sostenible en las áreas alrededor de la ciudad. Hay redes locales que venden sólo productos de comercio justo, local, y productos orgánicos, hay gente que trabaja en proyectos para fomentar el reciclaje,

y hay restaurantes que se esfuerzan por servir café orgánico. El mes pasado estos diferentes grupos se reunieron con el fin de mejorar la sostenibilidad de Xela - y su propia sostenibilidad. El resultado de esta reunión es la Red Verde.

La Red Verde es lo que su nombre indica: una red de organizaciones, negocios, y personas que están trabajando para cambiar ellos mismos y sus negocios y utilizar la comunicación y la educación popular para ayudar a cambiar Xela también.

La visión de la Red Verde es hacer de Xela un modelo de sostenibilidad y ecología en Guatemala a través de los esfuerzos de voluntariado de la población local y la comunidad global. ¿Qué significa ser sostenible? Significa realizar cambios pequeños: reciclar las bolsas de plástico para rellenar botellas que puedan ser utilizadas para construir escuelas. Significa intercambiar información sobre oportunidades de voluntariado en los proyectos de las diferentes organizaciones que la integran. Significa comunicación con otros grupos sobre los problemas que: ¿dónde puedo reciclar mi papel y plástico?

Significa aprender juntos acerca de cómo hacer agricultura urbana, cómo comprar

productos orgánicos, y cómo utilizar formas de transporte amigables con el planeta como la bicicleta.

Esta organización no podría haber llegado en un mejor momento para Xela. Estamos viviendo en una época de crisis ambiental, en donde empresas con grandes nombres están vendiendo productos alimenticios altamente desechables, insalubres, e importados que son muy populares, pero muy poco saludables. La Red Verde quiere combatir esto con una opción alternativa: opciones locales sanas, lo orgánico puede hacer de Xela un lugar mejor y más saludable para vivir. No se trata sólo de tener la ciudad más bonita, o ahorrar dinero. Se trata de servir como un ejemplo nacional, de demostrar al país que Xela se preocupa por su tierra y su gente.

ECOLOGY “Red Verde” Jenn Summers Xela is a great city. And like any great city, it has its problems. It is part of a country that does little to regulate toxic chemical use in agriculture – upon which Guatemala is very much dependent. It struggles with waste management. Anyone who has walked in the streets knows the frustration of maneuvering around garbage left on the sidewalks. Quetzaltecos also suffer from the burning exhaust left behind by the countless chicken buses and other cars flooding the narrow streets. And on occasion, the average Xela resident gets that sinking feeling of being trapped in a concrete jungle; where are the green spaces?

But Xela is also unique for its huge number of volunteers, organizations, and businesses that are working to make a difference in the community. There are organizations that work on sustainable agriculture in the areas around Xela. There are local networks that sell only fair trade, local, and organic products; there are people who work in projects to encourage recycling; and there are restaurants that make a point of serving

organic coffee. This past month these different groups have organized themselves in order to improve the sustainability of Xela – and their own sustainability. The product of this organization is Red Verde.

“Red Verde” is simply that: a “green” network of businesses, organizations, and individuals that are working to change themselves and their businesses and use communication and popular education to help change Xela as well.

The vision of Red Verde is to make Xela a model of sustainability and ecology in Guatemala through the efforts of the local people and the global community.

What does it mean to be sustainable? It means making small changes, like recycling your plastic bags by stuffing them into plastic bottles that can be used to build schools. It means sharing information about new opportunities to volunteer in projects that the different organizations are working on. It means communicating with other groups about a similar problem you might have (Where can I recycle my paper and plastics?). It means learning together about how to do urban gardening, how to buy organic products, and how to use more earth-friendly forms of transportation like

biking.

This organization couldn’t have come at a better time for Xela. We are living in a time of environmental crisis, where big-name corporations are selling highly disposable, unhealthy, and imported food products that are hugely popular but very much unhealthy. Red Verde wants to combat this with an alternative option: healthy, local, organic options that can help to make Xela a better and healthier place to live. It’s not just about making the city prettier, or saving money. It’s about serving as a national example, showing the country that Xela cares about its land and its people.

SOCIOLOGÍA Utopía y realidad Rudi Supek “Utopía y realidad” - dos nociones que pueden dejarnos indiferentes si se imagina a la utopía como una visión de un futuro muy lejano o como un sueño que trasciende la realidad, si tomamos la utopía como un tema de la imaginación y la especulación sin ninguna conexión con la realidad e incluso sin ninguna posibilidad de participar en la realidad. [Las nociones también pueden dejarnos indiferentes] Si tomamos la realidad como algo firme y permanente, algo que sigue una cierta inercia, privado de todas las posibilidades y los esfuerzos destinados a hacer posible lo imposible, y luego a su vez asumir la posibilidad como realidad.

En este punto nos encontramos con la contradicción entre el pragmatismo político, que afirma poseer un sentido de la realidad, para tener en cuenta “las condiciones históricas”, y adaptar la acción política a las exigencias concretas y “situaciones objetivas”, por un lado, y por otro, el humanismo revolucionario que deriva de la virtud y la fuerza de la utopía, [que es] en armonía con los medios y los objetivos revolucionarios, que cree que la construcción de la conciencia social es más importante que la construcción de la base social, lo que sitúa a las relaciones humanas antes que diversas instituciones y constituciones.

Esta contradicción podría convertirse en un diálogo permanente y fructífero entre lo real y lo utópico. Lo que está mal en esta contradicción es el momento en que el pragmatismo político desea integrar la utopía en la práctica diaria. Cuando tiende a convertirse en el único juez que permite determinar la naturaleza de todos los ideales y aspiraciones utópicas, y cuando se empieza a identificar la realidad existente con una imagen del futuro o de sus acciones individuales con el movimiento de la historia.

Cuando la realización de la liberación de las personas se intenta sólo por medios políticos: el “alma política” comienza a devorar, como advirtió Marx, el “alma social”, de la revolución socialista. En tal caso podemos hablar de una mistificación de la conciencia social y de una utopía esclavizada.

Independientemente de cómo todo esto suena contradictorio, es precisamente nuestro vínculo con la inspiración por la forma utópica de la voluntad radical que nos obliga a hacer la investigación crítica, analítica y científica de la realidad.

SOCIOLOGY Utopia and Reality Rudi Supek “Utopia And Reality” – two notions which can leave one completely indifferent if Utopia is imagined as a vision of a very distant future or as a dream which transcends reality, if we take Utopia as a subject of the imagination and speculation without any connection with reality or even without any possibility of being involved in reality. [The notions also leave one indifferent] if we take reality as something firm and permanent, something which follows a certain inertia, deprived of all possibilities and efforts designed to make the impossible possible, and then to turn the possible into reality.

As soon as a creative act is involved, there is the human tendency toward change and transformation [and] these two notions begin their mutual relationship, to condition and check each other. Their relationship could grow to a passionate interdependence and dramatic activity especially if a revolutionary action is involved. In that moment we begin to measure reality by [ideas of ] utopia, while utopia begins to merge with reality: things which seemed to us incomprehensible attain the highest sense of existence.

By passing through the hours of the revolutionary transformation of society and by sharing the longing for radical changes in reality, we become conscious of a number of contradictions provoked by revolutionary actions in the fields of history, social organization and human relationships.

These are the contradictions which

have been especially provoked by the confrontation of reality and Utopia, by a confrontation between a present still under the command of the past and inertia, and the future which is strolling between the possible and the impossible.

At this point we meet the contradiction between political pragmatism, which claims to possess a sense of reality, to take into account “historical conditions,” to adapt the political action to the demands of concrete and “objective situations” on the one hand, and on the other the revolutionary humanism which derives virtue and strength from Utopia, [which is] in harmony with revolutionary means and revolutionary aims, which believes that the construction of social consciousness is more important than the construction of the social basis, which places human relationships before various institutions and constitutions.

EntreMundos: ¿Vos qué crees que es una utopía?

James Rodríguez: Bueno, yo entiendo la utopía como un balance perfecto en nuestro mundo, nuestras sociedades. Algo que es indudablemente inalcanzable debido a las diferencias entre cada ser humano, los fallos de comunicación, y sobre todo los defectos que cada ser poseemos EM: ¿Cuál ha sido tu utopía personal?

JR: Mi utopía personal definitivamente se basa en dos pilares: El conocimiento – lo que aprendo y comparto – al igual que intentar de ser conciente del presente, el momento en el que estoy, y actuar en él.

La utopía, aunque inalcanzable, se debe intentar construir. Y el primer ladrillo en esa estructura social lo pongo yo.

EM: Eduardo Galeano dice sobre la utopía: “La utopía está en el horizonte. Camino dos pasos, ella se aleja dos pasos y el horizonte se corre diez pasos más allá. ¿Entonces para qué sirve la utopía? Para eso, sirve para caminar”. ¿A dónde te ha llevado la tuya?

JR: Me identifico mucho con este relato de Galeano. A mi me ha llevado a caminar, definitivamente. Me da fuerza, me inspira, me levanta cuando siento que ya no puedo más. Realmente he recorrido ya mucho en mi vida adulta, viviendo en varios países y realizando labores muy diferentes en cada uno. No ha sido fácil el dejar todo y volver a empezar voluntariamente, he sacrificado familia, amigos, comodidades. Pero todo ha sido por la búsqueda de este conocimiento, por buscar respuestas a preguntas que me carcomen por dentro - ¿porqué hay pobreza? ¿privilegios? ¿cómo puede mi presencia en la tierra mejorar nuestro mundo?

THE ENTREMUNDOS REPORT About Utopias and Other Things…

MiMundo.org is the platform from which the independent documentary photographer and photojournalist James Rodríguez provides an independent media alternative and editorial photography agency focusing particularly on social justice issues involving land tenure, human rights abuses, postwar processes, and negative effects of globalization. These were his thoughts during an interview with us about utopias.

EntreMundos: What do you think a utopia is?

James Rodríguez: Well, I understand utopia as a perfect balance in our world, our societies. Something that is undoubtedly unreachable due to the differences between every human being, communication failures, and above all the faults that each being possesses.

EM: What has been your personal utopia?

JR: My personal utopia is definitely based on two pillars: knowledge – what I learn and share – as well as an attempt to be conscious of the present, the moment I’m in, and acting in it. Although it’s unreachable, we should try to build a utopia. I’ll put the first brick in that social structure myself.

EM: Regarding utopias Eduardo Galeano says: “Utopia is on the horizon. I take two steps, it moves two steps further away, and the horizon has moved ten steps further still. So what is a utopia’s purpose? For just that, it keeps us moving.” Where has yours taken you?

JR: I strongly identify with Galeano’s account. It has definitely taken me places.

It gives me strength, inspires me, lifts me up when I feel I can’t go on. I really have traveled a lot already in my adult life, living in several countries and doing very different work in each one. It hasn’t been easy to leave everything and start again voluntarily; I have sacrificed family, friends, and comforts. But it has all been in pursuit of this knowledge, by seeking answers to questions that eat away at me inside – why is there poverty?

Privileges? How can my presence on earth improve our world?

EM: Is it worth being a utopian in this world?

EL INFORME DE ENTREMUNDOS JR: Cada persona que conozco me inspira de alguna manera. Ya sea por admiración o repudio, pero cada conversación, cada intercambio humano, nos deja algo positivo y/o negativo que me empuja a seguir caminando. Hacer una lista de las personas que me han inspirado sería casi infinita…

EM: James hablemos de Guatemala ¿es acaso una utopía exigir libertad de decisión? ¿es utópico exigir resarcimiento por el pasado? ¿qué es utópico y qué no lo es en un país como este?

JR: Yo pienso que buscar y exigir derechos básicos como la justicia, libertad, o la igualdad, no es utópico sino una necesidad humana. Pero el pensar que los logros son estáticos, sí es utópico. La búsqueda de libertades, igualdades, y justicias, son luchas permanente inspiradas por una utopía que nunca llegará para quedarse, pero de las cuales todos esperamos gozar la mayor parte de nuestras vidas.

JR: ¡Claro que vale la pena! La continua construcción de la utopía mantiene al espiritu vivo, con esperanza, da color al mundo. Hace poco vi a un amigo que no veía en 25 años. Se rió de mi vida y me dijo, sin sentimiento alguno: “Ojalá fuera tan utópico como tú. Yo ya nó. A mi lo único que me importa es el dinero.” Me dio mucha tristeza ver a un verdadero zombie andando perdido por este mundo que tiene tantas cosas y personas que ninguna ficción podrían inventarse.

EM: Como se puede ver en tu blog, has

andado por muchos lugares donde actualmente se lucha por las libertades y los Derechos Humanos ¿qué tienen en común los participantes del orgullo gay, con los campesinos manifestando en El Estor?

JR: Bueno, para mí es claro. La búsqueda de justicia, igualdad, libertad – que nunca realmente llegan a existir de manera permanente en ninguna sociedad – es la necesaria construcción de una utopía que en determinados momentos da frutos positivos.

Me solidarizo con estos movimientos, quiero aprender de ellos, vivir su lucha, y compartir lo que aprendo de ellos con otras personas.

EM: ¿Quién te inspira a la hora de seguir tu utopía, y por qué?

He laughed at my life and said, without any feeling, “I wish I were as utopian as you. I’m not anymore. My only concern is money.” It made me very sad to see a true zombie walking lost through this world, which has so many things and people no fiction could invent.

EM: As can be seen on your blog, you have been to many places that are currently fighting for liberty and human rights. What do the participants of gay pride have in common with the people demonstrating in El Estor?

JR: Well, for me it’s clear. The search for justice, equality, liberty – which never really come to exist permanently in any society – is the necessary construction of a utopia which in certain moments gives positive results. I support these movements; I want to learn from them, live their struggle, and share what I learn from them with others.

EM: Who inspires you when it’s time to continue your utopia and why?

JR: Everyone I know inspires me in some way.

Whether it is for admiration or repudiation, but every conversation, every human exchange, leaves us with something positive and/or negative which pushes me to keep going. To make a list of people who have inspired me would be almost endless…

EM: James, let’s talk about Guatemala. Is it perhaps utopian to demand freedom of decision? Is it utopian to demand redress for the past? What is and isn’t utopian in a country like this?

JR: I think to pursue and demand basic rights like justice, liberty, or equality isn’t utopian but a human necessity. But to think that the achievements are static, yes, that is utopian.

The search for liberties, equalities and justices are permanent struggles inspired by a utopia that will never be here to stay, but we all hope to enjoy these most of our lives.

“PARAÍSO” PERDIDO, PARTE I La Búsqueda del paraíso de ingenuos Laurel Carlton “¿A qué país del tercer mundo me podría mudar para vivir como un rey?”

Así empieza un foro virtual que discute los “paraísos” en el extranjero a los cuales los habitantes de los países “desarrollados” pueden mudarse permanentemente. Este foro no es el único: LiveandInvestOverseas. com (Vivir e invertir en el extranjero), Escapeartist.com (Artista del escape), Livingluxury.com (Vida de lujo),tanto La Revista de bienes inmuebles como La Revista de Escape de América prometen una vida exótica en países en vías de desarrollo.

Así inicio una serie en dos partes acerca de la tendencia de expatriados (los que viven fuera de su país sin residencia permanente) que buscan vivir como realeza en el extranjero.

Aquí exploraré el discurso que promueve esta tendencia y las percepciones de los expatriados en países como Guatemala. El segundo artículo, que saldrá en el número de noviembre/diciembre, tratará de cómo los expatriados que buscan el “paraíso” impactan las economías locales.

En primer lugar, ¿porqué buscar el “paraíso”?

Se enfatiza en el costo económico de vivir “como un rey,” pero otros beneficios mencionados de vivir en un país en vías de desarrollo incluyen impuestos más bajos (o evasión de impuestos), menos restricciones legales, asistencia de salud más asequible, y beneficios para las personas de mayor edad.

Los países latinoamericanos están entre los mejores destinos para encontrar el paraíso. En el artículo “Los mejores refugios de jubilación para 2012” del sitio web de

La promoción de estos “paraísos” alarma por varias cuestiones. Muchas ablandan la información de los países de destino, por ejemplo en el artículo “Cómo descubrir tu paraíso: ¡comparando artículos!” el autor describe la búsqueda de su familia para el hogar perfecto en el “paraíso”. Aunque el título y el tono pudieran haber sido en tono de burla, hablan de los países como platillos de un menú. De la misma manera el informe de LiveandInvestOverseas.com declara que los seis países destacados son los “más baratos, más seguros…con el mejor clima, la mejor infraestructura, la mejor asistencia de salud…las mejores ventajas de impuestos y los más cordiales hacia residentes extranjeros.

Por no decir que son los más románticos, lindos, exóticos, históricos, y llenos de aventura”.

Estos discursos promocionales serían más apropiados para un parque temático que para países con historias ricas, profundas desigualdades socioeconómicas, y culturas políticas complejas.

Además, los ciudadanos de estos países se deshumanizan y son objetizados. Un sitio web, promete “una sirvienta a tiempo completo, un jardinero y hasta un chofer con un presupuesto del seguro social”, reduce a los trabajadores locales a atracciones en una vitrina.

Mucha de la publicidad trivializa la dura pobreza y las desigualdades sociales de los “paraísos” centroamericanos, los cuales, según el Banco Mundial, están entre los que tienen la mayor desigualdad en todo el mundo. Un sitio web promete el “consumo ostentoso, con precios irrisorios.”

Otro declara que “los nuevos pobres de América pueden cambiar sus planes de una jubilación desdichada en los EEUU por una como corresponde a una persona de la realeza en esta nación encantadora y tropical de Centro América: retira tu efectivo, prepárate a emigrar y siéntete como uno de la elite en Panamá”.

Una revista manifiesta: “Futuros jubilados ¡se hace constar que Panamá te quiere!”

Pero ¿en verdad te quiere? ¿Quieren los guatemaltecos a residentes expatriados que buscan vivir “como un rey”, mientras consideran a los países y a la mano de obra local como mercancía de bajo costo, trivializando la pobreza y las desigualdades sociales?

Nada de esto es para minimizar el importante rol económico del turismo en países, tales como Guatemala, ni para decir que los extranjeros traen necesariamente efectos negativos al país. No obstante, el turismo difiere de la ocupación a largo plazo de los buscadores de utopía que se sienten con derecho a un “paraíso” bidimensional a la venta, a diferencia de quienes ven un mundo real que es hogar de millones.

Como canadiense, yo sé que no quiero que se hable de mi país en estos términos.

Se trata de respeto, y ya va siendo hora de que a Guatemala y a otros países en vías de desarrollo se lo proporcionen.

“PARADISE” LOST, PART I The Search for (Fool’s) Paradise Laurel Carlton “What third world country could I move to and live like a king?”

This begins an Internet forum discussing overseas “paradises” to which inhabitants of “developed” countries can permanently move. This forum is far from unique: LiveandInvestOverseas.com, EscapeArtist. com, LivingLuxuryInt.com, Caribbean Property Magazine and Escape from America Magazine all promise exotic living in developing countries.

This begins a two-part series on the trend of expatriates (expats - those who reside outside their home country without permanent, immigration-class residency) who look to live “like royalty” overseas. Here I will explore the discourse promoting this trend and expats’ perceptions of developing countries like Guatemala. The second article, appearing in the November/December issue, will discuss “paradise”-seeking expats’ impacts on local economies.

First, why search for “paradise” in a developing country? The inexpensive cost of “living like a king” is regularly emphasized, but other mentioned benefits of living in a developing country include lower taxes (or tax evasion), fewer legal restrictions, affordable health care, and seniors’ benefits.

Latin American countries are among the top destinations for “paradise.” In LiveandInvestOverseas.com’s report on the “World’s Top 6 Retirement Havens for 2012,” four featured locations were in

Latin America: #1 Panama, #2 Colombia, #4 Ecuador, and #6 Nicaragua. Guatemala also receives attention with websites like TerraXAtitlan.com and AntiguaFineHomes. com promoting benefits for expats in the “land of eternal spring.”

The promotion of these “paradises” raises several concerns. Many commodify destination countries, like the article “How to Discover your Paradise: Comparison Shop!” in which the author describes his family’s search for the perfect home in “paradise.”

While the title and tone may have been tongue-in-cheek, they liken developing countries to menu items. Likewise, the report by LiveandInvestOverseas.com

“This begins a twopart series on the trend of expatriates, who look to live ´like royalty´ overseas.” declares the six featured countries to be the “cheapest, safest…with the best weather, best infrastructure, best health care…most tax-advantaged, and most foreign-resident-friendly. Not to mention most romantic, beautiful, exotic, historic, and adventure-filled…” These sales pitches would be more appropriate for theme parks than for countries with rich histories, deep socio-economic inequalities, and complex political cultures.

Further, the citizens of these countries are often dehumanized and objectified. One website promises a “full-time maid…a gardener…even a driver on a Social Security

budget,” reducing local workers to displaywindow attractions.

Many trivialize the stark poverty and social inequalities of Central American “paradises,” which, according to the World Bank, are among the most socially unequal in the world. One website promises “guilt-free conspicuous consumption, with laughably low prices.” Another declares that “the newly poor of America can switch plans for a wretched retirement in the U.S. for one befitting a royal in this lovely tropical Central American nation…Cash out, plan to emigrate, and feel like one of the rich elite in Panama!”

One magazine declares: “Prospective retirees – let it be known that Panama wants you!”

But do they? Do Guatemalans want these kinds of expat residents, who are looking to live “like a king,” view countries and local labor as low-cost commodities, and trivialize poverty and social inequalities?

None of this is to overlook tourism’s important economic role in countries like Guatemala, nor is it to say that foreigners necessarily bring harm to the country.

However, tourism differs from long-term occupation by utopia-seekers who feel entitled to a two-dimensional “paradise” for purchase rather than who see a real-world home to millions.

As a Canadian, I know I don’t want my country spoken about in these terms.

It’s about respect, and it’s high time that Guatemala and other developing countries were given some.

The supporters these days focus on the environment, seeing “an ecological utopia waiting to awaken,” as well as complaining about high taxes.

EL PUNTO SOBRE LA i La utopía de los hechos concretos Sat Atma Singh Por la razón que quieras, imagínate que un día despiertas y no eres capaz de juzgarte ni de juzgar a los otros, de compararte con nadie ni de criticar. Pudo haber sido una promesa personal, la orden de un juez, un hechizo o cualquier otro motivo.

Ponte a pensar en cómo transcurriría tu día y el siguiente. Para empezar, al ir a lavarte y verte en el espejo tendrías seguramente la primera vacilación, en virtud de que no tendrías necesidad de hacerte ningún discurso ni objeción respecto a tu aspecto.

Luego cuando vayas a vestirte sería muy sencillo, no tendrías que hacer valoraciones sobre si te vistes con los pantalones de tal marca y los tenis de tal otra, ni si esa blusa o aquel suéter ya están pasados de moda. Lo más probable es que simplemente uses el atuendo con el que te sientas más cómodo en relación con el clima que haya en tu ciudad.

Resulta que no es así. Mucho de nuestro tiempo, de nuestros pensamientos y acciones tienen una clara tendencia a juzgar, criticar y quejarnos. Vivimos con un nivel de inconformidad, apatía e insensibilidad que nos hace ver completamente amargos y, lo utópico en nuestro caso parece ser lo contrario.

El maestro Yogui Bhajan causó sensación cuando por allá de los años 70 del siglo pasado, proclamaba entre una cantidad de estadounidenses hippies, drogadictos, revolucionarios y rebeldes que al nacer tenemos tres derechos: ser sanos, felices y santos. Pueden imaginar las reacciones que provocaba semejante afirmación. Como quiera que fuera, así lo sostuvo y trabajó durante décadas para demostrar que era capaz de transformar a quien tuviera interés en vivir bajo esos preceptos.

¿Cómo lo ves? ¿Te parece posible? ¿Qué te lo impide?

El maestro de yoga Kundalini, llegado de India, se autodefinió en más de una ocasión como el más grande recolector de basura que había en Estados Unidos pues para lograr su propósito, requería vaciar toda la mierda que sus alumnos cargaban en su mente, consciente e inconsciente, destruir ciertos patrones de conducta y erradicar una cantidad de hábitos nefastos. Solía decir que la humanidad de estos tiempos está conformada por 700 millones de “patitos feos” a quienes había que enseñarles su verdadero potencial, a quienes había que formar para que tuvieran no solo altitud y latitud sino que también calibre y carácter para que representaran, proyectaran y actuaran desde su esencia autentica, desde su yo más elevado.

Todo lo que tienes que hacer es actuar como un testigo neutral de los eventos que se desarrollan alrededor tuyo. Observarlos, aceptarlos y dejarlos ir sin engancharte con ellos, sin reaccionar ni querer figurar. Suena sencillo y prometedor si, como presumo, tu

Nos aferramos a emociones provenientes de nuestros centros energéticos (o chakras) inferiores que tienen que ver con la acumulación de posesiones, la lujuria, el apego, la avaricia, el intelecto y hasta se nos ha enseñado que experimentar con otras emociones más sublimes, como la compasión, el amor, el afecto es algo de débiles y por lo tanto, desdeñable.

Para mí es muy ilustrativo simplemente escuchar cómo nos comunicamos.

Presten atención a las palabras que nos decimos entre amigos, entre familias, entre desconocidos. Identifiquen las que crean que estén cargadas con alguna de las emociones mencionadas antes y el conteo les mostrará que un alto porcentaje o están dichas con algún interés oculto, prejuicio o negatividad. Quizás solo unas cuantas provengan de niveles energéticos más sutiles.

Como humanos siempre decimos que las grandes tragedias sacan lo mejor de nuestra esencia, pues es cuando apreciamos la solidaridad, la compasión, la ayuda y el servicio desinteresados. ¿Y el resto del tiempo por qué no somos capaces de vivir de la misma manera?

Explora nuevas dimensiones de tu ser y verás cómo es posible cambiar toda tu proyección y podrás ser transparente. Cuando más de nosotros vibremos de esta manera estoy seguro que la utopía de un mundo más armónico y feliz se hará realidad.

The Utopia of Concrete Facts Sat Atma Singh Imagine that, for a reason of your choice, one day you wake up and you are incapable of judging yourself or judging others, of comparing yourself to anyone or criticizing yourself or anyone else. It could be due to a personal promise, the order of a judge, a spell or any other reason.

Just think about how your day would go by. To begin with, going to wash and look at yourself in the mirror would have certainly been your first hesitation as you wouldn’t have to make any objection to your appearance.

Then when you go to dress it would be very simple; you wouldn’t have to make judgments about whether you wear pants and sneakers that match or if your blouse or sweater are already outdated. Most likely you would just use the outfit in which you feel most comfortable in relation to the weather that day in your city.

And then the day would pass without you praising or criticizing anyone, without transmitting gossip, with prayers that would have no derogatory adjectives and with your communication and outward projection being completely positive.

How does this seem to you? Does it seem possible? What’s stopping you?

All you have to do is act as a neutral witness to the events unfolding around you. Observe

them, accept them and let them go without getting hooked on them, not reacting or craving. It sounds simple and promising if, as I presume, your aspiration in life is to be happy or at least have harmony in your life.

However, our lives are not normally like this and much of the time our thoughts and actions have a clear tendency to judge, criticize and complain. We live with a level of dissatisfaction, apathy and insensitivity that makes us look completely bitter and the utopia in our case seems to be the opposite.

The master Yogi Bhajan was a sensation during the seventies of the last century when he proclaimed to a number of American hippies, drug addicts, revolutionaries and rebels that at birth we have three rights as human beings: being healthy, happy and holy. You can imagine the reactions that such a claim caused. Whatever they were, he maintained and lived according to these principles for decades to prove that he was able to transform anyone who was interested in living under these precepts.

The Kundalini Yoga teacher, arriving from India, described himself on more than one occasion as the largest garbage collector there was in the United States – he saw his purpose to empty all the shit that his students carried on their minds, consciously and unconsciously, to destroy certain patterns of behaviour and eliminate a number of harmful habits. He used to say that the humanity of these times is made up of 700 million “ugly ducklings” who had to teach themselves to realize their true potential, who had to train not only altitude and latitude but also size and character so that they would represent, project, and act from their authentic essence, from their higher selves.

Hopefully someone reading this will be able to rebuke me and prove to be an exception, but in general, our worries tend to vibrate at a level of density very distinct from that which would allow us to live as humans.

We hold on to the emotions of our lower energy centers (or chakras) that have to do with the accumulation of possessions, lust, attachment, greed, intellect and have even taught us that to experience other more sublime emotions, such as compassion, love and affection, is a sign of weakness and is therefore undesirable.

For me it’s very enlightening to just listen to how we communicate. Pay attention to the words we say between friends, between families, between strangers. Identify those who you believe are loaded with some of the emotions mentioned above and the count will show a high percentage of such people and perhaps only a few will come from more subtle energy levels.

As humans we always say that the great tragedies bring out the best of our essence because this is when we appreciate the solidarity, compassion, support and selfless service between us. What about the rest of the time? Why can we not live the same way?

VOCES COLECTIVAS En mi hambre mando yo Victoria Viva El Lago de Atitlán es una de las últimas joyas de biodiversidad natural en el planeta, hasta ahora ha sido considerado sagrado, no sólo por los guatemaltecos o los mayas, sino por todo el mundo. Único en el altiplano con flora y fauna tropical, también cuenta con una comunidad cuya tradición y espiritualidad se basa en la preservación de las semillas y la autonomía que proporciona la capacidad de cada agricultor para sostener a su familia.

Estacionalmente hay un pequeño ingreso de las industrias artesanales de turismo, bordados y otras diseñadas para los turistas... pero en realidad no hay mayor economía fuera de la producción local de maíz y frijol, huevos y pollos, verduras y frutas.

Cada año, las tormentas vienen y socavan las carreteras... Cada año se cae el sistema eléctrico, los teléfonos colapsan... las personas, casas y todo es barrido por el río o por una cascada repentina, o enterrado en un deslizamiento de tierra. Todos los

años comemos frijoles y maíz, huevos y pollos, frutas y verduras. Es una conclusión lógica pensar que estamos mejor con la economía local en lugar de convertirnos en dependientes de un mercado exterior al que en realidad no le importa si vivimos o morimos. De hecho, parece que pueden ganar más dinero con nosotros muertos.

En Guatemala es conocida la experimentación química agrícola, desde el control masivo de la United Fruit Company en los años 30 por lo que no debería sorprendernos que la mayor amenaza para este ecosistema sea la contaminación del agua del lago. La transnacional minera canadiense tiene una nueva idea para ayudarnos en el desarrollo en una economía mundial viable, esa idea es la energía geotérmica.

Perforar un túnel en el fondo, más allá del manto acuífero hasta la fuente de calor, crear presión…y ¡voila! energía natural. Incluso los ambientalistas están confundidos... ¿cuál podría ser el problema?

Los pequeños problemas, como el arsénico y otros venenos que destruyen las fuentes de agua subterráneas. Emisiones de gases sulfúricos a kilómetros a la redonda, atrapados en un valle. Impredecibles explosiones subterráneas que abren grietas

repentinas de gas letal, y destruyen los cimientos de los edificios. Inevitable, pero “aceptable” en comparación con las otras formas con las que estamos obteniendo combustible dicen...

Un detalle lamentable es que el acuerdo para la investigación se firmó no sólo para unos pocos kilómetros de territorio, sino para ceder toda el área protegida. Nadie sabe cuántos proyectos quieren iniciar, o que montañas debemos proteger, o si alguien vendió tierra a alguna minera privada que se haya hecho pasar por una empresa local. O si incluso tenemos derecho a preguntar. La política local está rodeada de secretividad y engaño... el miedo prevalece... la situación nacional es tensa...

Las comunidades indígenas están aferrándose con desesperación a sus tierras y a sus derechos de tener cultivos y agua limpia. Gracias a sus milpas han logrado mantenerse con vida durante los cientos de años de abusos. Es difícil pensar en una comunidad más resistente.

A mí me parece bastante irónico que mientras el nivel del agua en el Lago sube varios metros por año, se descubrió un sitio arqueológico con miles de años de existencia justo en las playas del Cerro de Oro. Semebaj me recuerda al final de “2001 Odisea del Espacio” rocas planas y monolitos. ¿Acaso están regresando los antiguos dioses a recordarnos algo?

Estamos en el corazón de todo acá: transformaciones, nuevas conexiones, sabiduría antigua; el Lago de Atitlán es todavía un Jardín del Edén, un refugio del estrés del desarrollo y el consumo masivo. Yo creo que tenemos una oportunidad.

COLLECTIVE VOICES “En mi hambre mando yo” Victoria Viva Lake Atitlán is one of the last gems of natural biodiversity left on the planet. Up until now it´s been held sacred, not only by Guatemalans or Mayas, but by the entire world. Unique in highland tropical flora and fauna, it also boasts a community whose traditions and spirituality are based in the preservation of seeds and the autonomy provided by each farmer´s ability to sustain his family.

Seasonally there´s a little income from artisanal tourist industries, embroidery and other products designed for tourists, but there really isn´t much of an economy outside of the local production of corn and beans, eggs and chickens, vegetables and fruits.

Every year the storms come and cause the highways to cave in. Every year our power goes out, phones go down. People, houses, and everything else get swept away in the river or by a sudden waterfall or are buried under a landslide. Every year we eat beans and corn, eggs and chickens, fruits and vegetables. It´s a logical conclusion that we are better off with our local economy than by becoming dependent on an outside market that doesn´t really care if we live or die. In fact, it looks like they can probably make more money with us dead.

Agricultural chemical experimentation has been known in Guatemala since United Fruit´s massive control back in the ´30s, so we shouldn´t be surprised that the biggest threat to this ecosystem is contamination of the lake water. The Canadian mining industry´s new idea to help us develop into a viable world economy is geothermal energy.

Drill a tunnel down deep, past the aquifer into the heat source, create pressure, and voila: natural energy. Even the environmentalists are confused. What could be wrong with it?

There are small problems, like arsenic and other poisons that destroy the underground water sources, sulfuric gas emissions for miles around trapped in a valley, unpredictable underground explosions that open sudden fissures of lethal gas and destroy building foundations. These are inevitable, but “acceptable” compared with other ways we are getting fuel, they say...

An unfortunate detail is that the investigation deal was signed for not just a few miles of territory, but for the entire protected area.

Nobody knows how many projects they want to start, which mountains we have to protect, if somebody sold private land to a mining company posing as a local business, or whether we even have a right to ask. Local politics are clothed in secrecy and misrepresentation.

Fear prevails. The national situation is tense.

The Mayan communities are desperately clinging to their lands and their rights to grow food and drink clean water. Thanks to their milpas, they´ve managed to keep their way of life intact during hundreds of years of assault. It is hard to find a more resistant community.

I find it ironic that as the lake water rises several meters per year lately, we discover a pilgrimage site hidden for 4,000 years under water just off the beach at Cerro de Oro. Semebaj reminds me of the end of “2001: A Space Odyssey”: flat rocks and monoliths.

Are the ancient gods returning to remind us of something?

We are at the heart of it all here: transformations, new connections, old wisdom; Lake Atitlán is still a Garden of Eden, a refuge from the stress of development and mass consumerism. I believe we have a chance.

El sistema milpa considera que el maíz, frijol y el ayote son tres hermanas y viven en armonía en un terreno. Este sistema de agricultura es considerado como una práctica que implementaron los mayas, para promover una alimentación sana de acuerdo a los nutrientes y equilibrio de la naturaleza.

César Mendoza La agricultura orgánica sostenible y las semillas criollas son elementos fundamentales para la vida de los habitantes de los pueblos originarios, según la historia de la humanidad, cuando el hombre se dedicaba a la caza, la mujer descubrió la agricultura al encontrar alrededor las cuevas semillas silvestres.

Desde hace doce mil años, el hombre y la mujer pasaron recolectando y domesticando semillas y plantas silvestres. Esta práctica contribuyó con la evolución de la agricultura orgánica en todo el mundo, de 1930 a la fecha a través del Fitomejoramiento se han generado variedad puras e hibridas.

Durante los años ochentas a la fecha, la biotecnología ha alcanzado una evolución y con ellos se crearon las semillas transgénicas en diferentes países del mundo, los promotores de estas semillas sostienen que es para incrementar la producción alimenticia y promover semillas resistentes ante el cambio climático.

Las semillas nativas y la agricultura en la cosmovisión maya son elementos indispensables para la vida de los pueblos indígenas, descendientes de los mayas.

Es importante resaltar que el maíz criollo es un alimento que apareció en el b´aqtun uno, de acuerdo al calendario maya, la abuela ixmuchané fue quien enseñó a comer y cocinar el maíz. Junaj Pu e Ixbalanque enseñaron a sembrar, cuidar y cosechar el grano, según el Popol Wuj. Pese al valor que tiene la agricultura orgánica sostenible y la conservación de semillas criollas y nativas en las comunidades indígenas, en el congreso de la República de Guatemala, existe una iniciativa ley marco para la Biodiversidad de Organismos Mejorados por Ingeniería Genética, que pretende darle vida a la experimentación e implementación de semillas transgénicas en el país.

Los productos genéticamente manipulados no contienen la misma cantidad de nutrientes como los productos orgánicos o naturales. Los productos transgénicos pueden generar enfermedades conocidas y desconocidas. Generan mayores costos de producción, en este caso las semillas transgénicas y los agroquímicos deben ser comprados a empresas transnacionales.

La dependencia de los productos transgénicos, son una amenaza para la Soberanía Alimentaria. El país no cuenta con tecnologías necesarias para desarrollar estudios sobre alimentos genéticamente manipulados, ni para comprobar los riesgos que traen los transgénicos para la salud.

La REDSAG plantea una iniciativa de ley que está basada en proteger y defender la diversidad biológica alimentaria ante el interés de empresas transnacionales y aplicar el principio de precaución.

¿Qué es un transgénico?

Son productos de la ingeniería genética que permiten transportar genes ajenos de microorganismos, plantas y animales a otros seres totalmente distintos.

COLLECTIVE VOICES Seeds and Organic Sustainable Agriculture

In the milpa system, corn, beans, and ayote squash are considered three sisters, living in harmony in a plot of land. This agricultural system is considered to be a practice implemented by the Maya to promote healthy food in accordance with the nutrients and balance of nature.

Sustainable organic agriculture and native seeds were fundamental elements in the lives of the inhabitants of the original villages. According to the history of mankind, when man turned to hunting, woman discovered agriculture after finding wild seeds around the caves.

For 12,000 years, man and woman have been raising and domesticating wild seeds and plants. This practice contributed to the evolution of organic agriculture throughout the world; from 1930 to the present, pure and hybrid varieties have been generated through selective breeding.

From the ’80s until the present, biotechnology has evolved and with that transgenic seeds have been created in various countries of the world. The developers of these seeds insist that the purpose is to increase food production and develop seeds that are resistant to climate change.

In the Mayan cosmovisión, or worldview, native seeds and agriculture are indispensable elements in the lives of indigenous peoples, descendants of the Maya. Mayan technologies seek harmony with nature and reject the use of agrochemicals and transgenic seeds because they are considered harmful to Mother Nature.

The milpa system is a method of sustainable organic agriculture used by farmers throughout the country and is considered to be part of the system inherited from the ancient Maya. During each harvest, the farmers save the seeds for the next sowing; the harvest is always destined for consumption by their families, with the extra surplus sometimes sold at local markets.

It is important to point out that native corn is a food that appeared in one b’aqtun in the Mayan calendar. The grandmother Ixmuchané taught the people how to eat and cook corn. Junaj Pu and Ixbalanque taught the people how to plant, care for, and harvest the grain, according to the Popol Wuj. Despite the importance of sustainable organic agriculture and the conservation of native seeds in indigenous communities, there is in Guatemala’s Congress a proposed law for the Biodiversity of Improved Organisms through Genetic Engineering, which intends to allow the experimentation and implementation of transgenic seeds in the country.

What is transgenic?

They are products of genetic engineering, which makes it possible to transmit foreign genes from microorganisms, plants, and animals to other, completely different species.

Some of the effects of transgenic seeds and food include the development of toxins and allergies, the weakening of the immune system, and harm to internal organs. In addition, the seeds depend

on agrochemicals and destroy traditional systems of sustainable organic agriculture and nutritional autonomy.

For the Red Nacional por la Defensa de la Soberanía Alimentaria en Guatemala (National Network for the Defense of Food Autonomy in Guatemala, or REDSAG), genetically modified organisms don’t solve hunger. These seeds would increase the problem of malnutrition in the country.

Genetically manipulated products do not contain the same levels of nutrients as natural and organic products. Transgenic products can generate both identified and unknown illnesses. They lead to higher production costs because genetically modified seeds and agrochemicals must be purchased from transnational corporations.

Dependence on transgenic products is a threat to food autonomy. The country does not have the necessary technology to carry out studies about genetically manipulated foods, nor to demonstrate the health risks of transgenic products.

REDSAG is proposing a legal initiative based on protecting and defending the biological diversity of food, rather than on the interests of transnational corporations, and that applies the principal of precaution.

Laina Schneider trabajó con la Asociación de Mujeres del Altiplano (AMA) en junio y julio de 2012. Hogar Comunitario es un centro que atiende a 30 niños entre las edades de 0 a 6, en Llanos de Pinal, una comunidad en las afueras de Quetzaltenango. Todos los niños provienen de familias marginadas y de bajos ingresos, muchos de las cuales son dirigidos por madres solteras que trabajan. Los voluntarios pueden apoyar al jugar juegos interactivos con los niños, leer cuentos, hacer manualidades, cantar y armar rompecabezas. Magnolia Miramar Magnolia Miramar es una pequeña comunidad cerca de Colomba, a tres horas de Xela. Los habitantes huyeron como refugiados a México durante 18 años por la guerra civil, y negociaron colectivamente la tierra donde ahora viven y trabajan como cooperativa. Los voluntarios pueden trabajar en las plantaciones de café orgánico o en el jardín orgánico, enseñar inglés o apoyar a otros maestros en la escuela, y ayudar a desarrollar su proyecto de eco-turismo.

Por Q25 la noche, los voluntarios pueden quedarse en la casa patronal o con una familia; cuesta Q15 cada tiempo de comida.

As a student of international agriculture at Virginia Tech, she came to Guatemala excited about collaborating in the design of a new greenhouse for one of AMA’s Women’s Circles. She worked with the AMA team to carry out over a dozen site-analyses. After the building site was chosen, Laina assisted in the design of the greenhouse. She also wrote a 4-week curriculum that AMA’s community facilitators will use to train the Women’s Circles in organic agricultural methods and soil conservation. Hogar Comunitario is a center that serves 30 children, ages 0 to 6, in Llanos de Pinal, just outside of Quetzaltenango. The children all come from low-income, marginalized families, many of whom are run by single working mothers. Volunteers can support the center by playing interactive games with the children, reading stories, doing arts and crafts, singing with the children, and doing puzzles. Unión de Agricultores Minifundistas (UAM) UAM supports the agricultural sector of Guatemala, helping to raise the quality of life of small hold agricultural workers through increased income, micro-lending programs, access to education, and gender equity programs. Short-term volunteers are needed to help with the maintenance of their fair-trade store and event organization.

Magnolia Miramar Magnolia Miramar is a small community near Columba, about 3 hours from Xela. The community´s inhabitants fled as refugees to Mexico for about 18 years during the civil war, and collectively bargained for the land they now inhabitant and work as a cooperative. Volunteers can work in the organic coffee plantation or garden, teach English or support other teachers in the community school, and help develop the eco-tourism project. For Q25 per night, volunteers can stay in the old finca farmhouse or with a homestay; breakfast and dinner are Q15 each and lunch is Q25.

Niños de Guatemala NDG works to help build a better future for Guatemala through education, and runs educational programs at two schools near Ciudad Vieja, Sacatepéquez, a village 15 minutes from Antigua. In the mornings, volunteers help as teaching assistants, and in the afternoons, volunteers can teach artistic expression and/or help with remedial educational support. However, volunteers are valued as individuals, and NDG establishes a customized volunteer work plan for each individual. Intermediate Spanish and a minimum commitment of 1 month are required. EntreMundos Magazine As you have read, the bimonthly EntreMundos Revista focuses on human rights and development issues. The magazine’s mission is to highlight the work of different local projects and issues, to ultimately provide a space that serves as an educational tool, as well as a space for discussion of the issues that affect Guatemala. We are always looking for volunteers with advanced Spanish and English skills to help with the translation and copy-editing process. Entremundos offers a volunteer service to connect volunteers to NGOs. Come and visit the Entremundos office from Monday to Thursday between 2pm and 5pm for an overview of all volunteer opportunities. For a donation of Q25 you will receive personal assistance with finding a volunteer position suited to your specific needs, use of the computers and internet, and phone calls to NGOs with questions or to make arrangements (we can do this for you).
