Un hogar es para los humanos y animales como un búnker en la vida; un lugar en donde nos refugiamos de todo lo que hay afuera del mundo para sentirnos cómodos y seguros, descansar y recargar fuerzas para luego, volver al campo de batalla. No obstante, un hogar difícilmente va a construirse sin una casa, porque, -ya sea con familia o no-, las personas necesitamos un lugar para guardar nuestras pertenencias, realizar actividades y producir varias de las escenas que forman parte de la película de nuestra existencia.

Por eso, la vivienda es algo casi inherente a las personas y es una prueba de la evolución del ser humano (exceptuando por supuesto a los grupos de personas nómadas que aún existen).

Los primeros habitantes de la tierra tuvieron en algún momento la necesidad de refugiarse de los peligros de su ambiente, y fue así como empezaron a pernoctar en cuevas, lo que cambiaría poco a poco hasta llegar a las casas de la actualidad. Las construcciones consideradas como arquitectónicas comenzaron con la era paleolítica; sin embargo, no fue hasta que el hombre decidió asentarse permanentemente cuando comenzó a imaginar, diseñar, construir y modificar su hábitat para satisfacer sus necesidades.

La arquitectura se ha convertido en una forma de analizar el pasado y el presente de la humanidad, pues por medio de ella se reflejan sus características culturales, sociales, económicas e incluso políticas. Por eso, presentar en esta edición el tema de

Foto: Wikicommons arquitectura y vivienda desligada de todas esas características que históricamente la han acompañado, no sería justo. Hemos hecho una recopilación de artículos de escritores que nos hablan sobre la importancia de la vivienda para el desarrollo de los seres humanos, sobre la influencia que fenómenos como la migración causan en ella, sobre viejas-nuevas formas de ver la construcción (haciendo énfasis en la arquitectura vernácula) y sobre organizaciones que trabajan en el tema de vivienda para brindar soluciones a la problemática habitacional. Esperamos que este tema sea refrescante e interesante para ustedes. ¡Que disfruten de la edición número 99 de la Revista Entremundos!

Note

For people and animals, our home is like a bunker; a place of refuge from the outside world where we feel comfortable and safe to rest and recharge so that we can latter return to the battlefield.

However, it is difficult to make a home without a house because, whether or not they have a family, people need one place to keep their stuff, do things, and produce the various scenes that are spliced together to create the movie of our existence.

Therefore, a house is something inherent to people and is evidence of human evolution –excepting of course for the nomadic people in the world-. The first inhabitants of the earth sometimes had the need to seek refuge from the dangers of their environment and this was how humans began to pass the night in caves, which changed, little by little, until they became the buildings of today. Building methods that are considered to be architecture emerged in the Paleolithic era; nevertheless, it was not until humans decided to settle down when they began

to imagine, design, build, and modify their surroundings to satisfy their needs.

Architecture has become a way to analysis the past and the present of humanity, even a means to reflect our cultural, social, economic and political characteristics. Therefore, to present, in this edition, the theme of architecture and dwellings striped of all these characteristics that have historically accompanied it, would not do it justice. We have gathered a collection of articles by authors that tell us about the importance of the home to the development of human beings, about the influence that phenomena such as migration have had on them, about old-new forms of construction (with an emphasis on vernacular architecture), and about organizations that work on the theme of housing to bring solutions to the problem of homelessness. We hope that this theme is refreshing and interesting for you.

NOTICIAS SOBRE DERECHOS HUMANOS ESTRENO DE LA PELÍCULA 500 AÑOS

El pasado 24 de enero, la película 500 años de la directora Pamela Yates, el productor Paco de Onís y el editor Peter Kinoy fue estrenada a nivel nacional en el teatro Roma de Quetzaltenango. La película tiene gran relevancia para los guatemaltecos por reflejar la historia y sociedad guatemalteca. Esta película forma parte de “la saga de la resistencia” la cual es una serie de 3 películas documentales que incluyen Cuando las montañas tiemblan, que gira en torno a la represión del ejército y las masacres en Guatemala, Granito: ¿Cómo atrapar a un dictador? que muestra como algunos momentos clave de escenas registradas en la película Cuando las montañas tiemblan fueron convertidos en evidencia forense en el juicio contra el general Efraín Ríos Montt, y finalmente 500 años, la cual documenta el juicio contra Ríos Montt en el 2013 por ser el principal jefe responsable del genocidio cometido contra el pueblo Ixil durante los años ochenta. 500 años muestra además la lucha del pueblo guatemalteco contra la corrupción a través de sus manifestaciones del 2015 contra el ex vicepresidente Otto Pérez Molina y Roxana Baldetti, ambos acusados en el caso denominado La Línea.

LOS EXCESOS DEL PRESIDENTE MORALES

Nuevamente, el presidente guatemalteco Jimmy Morales, se ha visto envuelto en escándalos dentro de su gobierno. Esta vez, se le acusa de haber realizado gastos de tipo personal con fondos del Estado. La Secretaría de Asuntos Administrativos y de Seguridad de la Presidencia (SAAS) admitió que artículos como, lentes, tenis, licores,

flores, vitaminas y otros artículos y servicios –como masajes- habían sido pagados con fondos públicos.

Por ejemplo, un par de lentes marca Carolina Herrera y valorados en Q21,900.00 fueron justificados por el secretario de la SAAS con la excusa de que “el presidente no leía bien y necesitaba esos lentes”.

Por si fuera poco, durante todo el mandato del presidente Morales, se han comprado y reparado lentes en ocasiones anteriores, por lo que los gastos en lentes durante el mandato del presidente ascienden a un monto de Q.67,897.00. Morales, quien es el presidente mejor pagado de América Latina con un ingreso mensual de Q.146,000.00 (50 veces el salario mínimo en Guatemala), se mostró molesto cuando la prensa le preguntó por qué había comprado tales artículos con fondos estatales y no con su salario, mostrándose evasivo y ofendido. Sin embargo, una semana después, el vocero presidencial indicó que, por órdenes del presidente, se abriría una investigación para su propia secretaría por haber gastado tales cantidades en los artículos descritos, posterior a que la SAAS explicara que la obtención de dichos artículos era completamente responsabilidad de esta dependencia y que el presidente no tenía idea de lo que se había gastado. La contraloría general de cuentas afirmó que sus auditores presentarán un informe provisional de cargos, para recuperar el dinero gastado por la SAAS. MUERTE DE TESTIGO EN CASO DE GENOCIDIO

Juan López Matom, quien formaba parte del grupo de los testigos para el juicio aun no programado contra el general Ríos Montt por genocidio y delitos de lesa humanidad, fue hallado muerto en el 2016, cuando su cadáver apareció en un río. No obstante, su muerte no fue reportada por sus familiares

hasta este año, con lo que cifra de testigos muertos asciende a 5 dentro de los 150 testigos acreditados para el juicio. El Centro de Acción Legal para los Derechos Humanos (CALDH) anunció en un comunicado el deceso de Matom y lamentó su muerte reconociendo que sus testimonios en el juicio del 2013 fueron clave para dictar la sentencia de genocidio contra Ríos Montt, la cual fue anulada por la Corte de Constitucionalidad por alegar que durante el juicio se había incumplido una resolución del máximo tribunal para suspender el debate y tramitar la recusación. Ríos Montt, se encuentra actualmente como “interdicto” por padecer de demencia senil, razon por la cual se desconoce aun cuándo se reanudará el juicio.

ELECCIÓN DE NUEVO FISCAL GENERAL

Thelma Aldana, quien ejerció como fiscal general del Ministerio Público en Guatemala durante 4 años, dejará su cargo en mayo próximo. Aldana, quien ha sido apoyo elemental para la CICIG en las investigaciones de casos en delitos cometidos por altos funcionarios, ha sido una figura importante dentro de la lucha corrupción en Guatemala y ha sido apoyada por numerosas instituciones tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. El pasado mes de enero, se abrió el proceso de postulación de candidatos para ocupar dicho puesto y Aldana no ha manifestado hasta el momento su interés para competir nuevamente por dicho cargo. El nuevo o la nueva fiscal general será elegido por la Corte Suprema de Justicia y ésta a su vez, elegirá entre los candidatos que sean propuestos por la Comisión de Postulación, la cual está conformada por representantes de sectores académicos, profesionales y gremiales, quienes tienen la responsabilidad de evaluar los expedientes de los candidatos a fiscal general.

RELEASE OF FILM 500 AÑOS

On the 24th of January, the film 500 años (500 years) from director Pamela Yates, producer Paco de Onis and edited by Peter Kinoy, had its national premier in Quetzaltenango’s Teatro Roma. The film is particulary pertinent to Guatemalans as it is a reflection of their history and society. The film also forms a part of the ‘saga of resistance’: a series of 3 documentary films. The saga also includes Cuando las montañas tiemblan (‘ When the mountains tremble’) which centres around military repression and the massacres in Guatemala and Granito: ¿Cómo atrapar a un dictador? (‘Granito: how do you catch a dictator?’) which shows how certain key moments of scenes from Cuando las montanas tiemblan were converted into forensic evidence in the trial against Efrain Ríos Montt.

500 años documents the 2013 trial against Ríos Montt for being the principal person responsible for the genocide commited again the Ixil people in the 80s. 500 años also shows the Guatemalan people’s fight against corruption through their 2015 protests against former Vice President Otto Pérez Molina and Roxana Baldetti, both charged in the case known as as La Línea.

PRESIDENT MORALES LIFE OF EXCESS

Guatemala’s President Jimmy Morales has found himself caught up in yet another scandal within his government. This time he has been accused of spending large amounts of state money for his personal use. The Secretaría de Asuntos Administrativos y de Seguridad de la Presidencia (SAAS) (Secretariat for Administrative Affairs and Security of the Presidency) admitted that items such as glasses, trainers,

liquor, flowers, vitamins and other goods and ser vices- including massages- had been funded by public money. For example, a pair of Carolina Herrera designer glasses that cost 21,900.00 Quetzal (roughly £2150.00) were justified by the SAAS with the excuse that ‘the president had problems with his reading and needed these specific lenses’. On top of that, during Morales’ time in office, lenses have been bought and repaired on numerous occasions, bringing the total amount spent on glasses during the president’s term to 67, 897.00 Quetzal (roughly £6667.00). Morales, who is the best paid president in Latin America, with a monthly income of 146,000.00 Quetzal (£14,338.00) – which equates to 50 times the minimum wage in Guatemala – appeared to get irritated, coming across evasive and offended when the press asked him why he has bought such items with state funds and not with his own money. However, a week later the president’s spokesperson revealed that, by order of the president, an investigation would be opened into his own secretariat for having spent so much money on the listed items.

After this, the SAAS explained thay were entirely responsible for the procurement of these items, and that the president had no idea how much had been spent. The general comptroller of accounts stated that its auditors will present a provisional report of charges to recover the money expent by the SAAS. DEATH OF GENOCIDE CASE WITNESS

Juan López Matom, who was a part of the group of witnesses for the still unscheduled trial against General Ríos Montt for genocide and crimes against humanity, was found dead in 2016 when his corpse appeared in a river. Nevertheless, his death wasn’t reported by his family until this year,

which brings the number of deaths amongst the witnesses accredited for the trial up to 5 out of 150 witnesses.

The Centro de Acción Legal para los Derechos Humanos (CALDH) (Centre of Legal Action for Human Rights) announced and lamented Matom’s death in a release, acknowledging that his testimonies in the 2013 trial played a key part in issuing the judgement of genocide against Ríos Montt. This sentence was then annulled by the Constitutional Court who alleged that during the trial a decision of the highest court had been breached in order to suspend the debate and process the recusa of Ríos Montt, is currently in a state of “interdiction” for suffering from senile dementia; so for this reason it is not known when the trial will resume.

ELECTION OF NEW GENERAL ATTORNEY

Thelma Aldana, who was the attorney general of the Public Prosecutor’s office in Guatemala for 4 years, will leave her position next May. Aldana, who has been a fundamental support for the CICG investigations of cases of crimes committed by high officials, has been an important figure in the fight against corruption in Guatemala and has been supported by numerous institutions both nationally and internationally. The process of nominating candidates for this position opened last January, and Aldana has not yet expressed any interest in competing again for the role. The new general attorney will be selected by the Supreme Court of Justice who will in turn choose between the candidates proposed by the Nominating Committee, which is made up of representatives of academic, professional and professional sectors, who have the responsibility of evaluating the candidates’ dossiers.

TEMA DE PORTADA Arquitectura de remesa (El sueño americano en block)

ANTONIO HERNÁNDEZ Hacer un recorrido en alguno de los pueblos de Guatemala puede ser una experiencia única. Además de los consabidos aspectos culturales y tradicionales, hay un elemento que está transformando la vida y los paisajes del país, principalmente del altiplano occidental. Donde otrora las casas de barro y teja se disfrazaban entre las tierras de cultivo y los pinos, hoy podemos encontrar altas construcciones de block, concreto y hierro, con curiosos acabados de un estilo definible solo por el fenómeno económico que les ha dado origen: las remesas.

La arquitectura de remesa, como se le ha llamado, es un fenómeno arquitectónico derivado del proceso migratorio de las últimas décadas. Investigaciones como las del sociólogo Douglas Massey y la del doctor Rafael Alarcón del Colegio de la Frontera Norte COLEF, han demostrado que el segundo rubro de importancia en el uso de las remesas, después del consumo, es la compra de vivienda o lote y la construcción o reparación de las viviendas.

Definitivamente un rasgo distintivo de este tipo de arquitectura son los lujos internos y distinciones externas, como lo apunta la investigación Sueños de retorno, signos de éxito, del Centro Cultural de España –CCE-: “Se incorporan infinidad de ingredientes decorativos y múltiples ocurrencias como colores, arcos, cornisas con teja, moldes prefabricados y fuentes.

Se incluyen combinaciones de motivos arquitectónicos y decorativos insólitos y de difícil elaboración: ventanas ovaladas, paredes en curva o retorcidas columnas salomónicas”. Continúa: “Las preferencias estéticas incorporan y convergen distintas vertientes. Todos los estilos son posibles”.

Por tal motivo se le ha catalogado también como la “estética de la sobrecarga” que alimenta un sentimiento de “nuevos ricos” para quienes es preciso deslumbrar.

Estas viviendas muchas veces tienen problemas de estructura y funcionalidad, puesto que han sido construidas según la imaginación y gusto de los propietarios, dejando a un lado principios arquitectónicos básicos como los marcos estructurales y de cimentación o los sistemas de iluminación y ventilación natural. A falta de estudios de riesgo, se construyen viviendas de dos, tres o hasta cuatro niveles en terrenos no apropiados, ya sea por la composición del suelo, o por la ubicación en zonas de alto peligro natural, como las orillas de ríos, laderas muy empinadas o a las orillas de barrancos.

Otro elemento común a la arquitectura de remesa, son los usos que se les da a las viviendas, más allá de la habitación.

Muchas casas son construidas con uno o dos “locales” en el primer nivel, dejando los ambientes familiares generalmente en

una planta alta. Los locales son puestos a disposición como espacios para almacenaje de mercadería o para el establecimiento de pequeños comercios. Muchas veces, durante algún tiempo, éstos y otros ambientes de la casa se encuentran vacíos.

Pese a todo, la arquitectura de remesa es más que la controvertida combinación de estilos, la peligrosa inversión en zonas de riesgo o los múltiples usos de las construcciones. Es el derecho a la transformación de la realidad por medio de la transformación de su entorno. Como dice la investigación del CCE: “…los emigrantes llevan hasta donde pueden su reto a la historia de exclusión que cargan. Hasta donde pueden, desarrollan sus sueños, sus sugestiones de mejoras modernas, su entrada a “otros mundos posibles”. Desde la cruel sobrevivencia pre moderna a la que estaban condenados como campesinos, hasta la artificiosa y cínica hipermodernidad en la que están sumidos, es todo un salto mortal”.

The architecture of remittances (The American dream in concrete blocks)

ANTONIO HERNÁNDEZ Taking a tour of one of the Guatmalan villages can be a unique experience. As well as the well-known cultural and traditional aspects, there is an element that is transforming the country’s life and landscapes, mainly in the Western Highlands.

Where once the houses of mud and tiles were disguised by the cultivated land and the pines, today we can find high constructions of block, concrete and iron, with curious finishes of a style definable only by the economic phenomenon that has given rise to them: remittances.

These homes often have problems of structure and functionality, since they have been built according to the imagination and taste of the owners, leaving aside basic architectural principles such as structural and foundation frames or lighting systems and natural ventilation.

In the absence of risk studies, houses of two, three or even four levels are built on unsuitable land, either because of the composition of the soil, or because of the location in areas of high natural hazard, such as the banks of rivers, excessively steep hillsides or on the banks of ravines.

Another element common to the remittance architecture is the uses that are given to housing, beyond the bedroom. Many houses are built with one or two spaces on the first level, leaving family environments generally on a higher floor. The premises are made available as spaces for storage of merchandise or for the establishment of small shops. Many times, for some time, these and other parts of the house are empty.

In spite of everything, the architecture of remittances is more than the controversial combination of styles, the dangerous investment in risk zones and the multiple uses of the constructions. It is the right to transform reality through the transformation of its environment. As the CCE research says: “...migrants take their challenge to the history of exclusion they carry as far as they can. As far as they can, they develop their dreams, their suggestions for modern improvements, their entrance to “other possible worlds”. From the cruel pre-modern survival to which they were condemned as peasants, to the artificial and cynical hypermodernity in which they are immersed, it is a complete somersault”.

Es al lado de la semilla del maíz, frijol, chan y amaranto que los pueblos originarios de Mesoamérica fueron desarrollando algunas de las culturas más sobresalientes en la historia humana. Las abuelas y abuelos mayas sabían y reconocían desde la cosmogonía ancestral, que el Creador y Formador nos había dado todo lo que necesitamos para vivir bien y en abundancia; que nos dio el maíz -que era su madre-, y por ello, se ofrecieron y se continúan ofreciendo plegarias y ceremonias al sagrado maíz.

El valor de estos conocimientos viene a raíz de que fueron desarrollados a través de la observación y la experimentación, guardando un equilibrio con el resto de especies en el territorio, donde la naturaleza y la tierra tienen un carácter sagrado.

La invasión del territorio, el periodo Colonial y las permanentes políticas de despojo no lograron detener el traslado de ese conocimiento. Hoy día, contamos con

una vasta cantidad de técnicas que se están implementando para garantizar la alimentación de la población.

Hay que reconocer además que este conocimiento sobrevive en medio de las condiciones más adversas: las condiciones de desigualdad social en las que vive la mayoría de población, la concentración de la tierra productiva y la expansión de los monocultivos de caña, palma y banano; la contaminación de los ríos y fuentes de agua y la corrupción en las instancias estatales responsables del apoyo a la agricultura.

A ello se suma también el hecho de que la industria alimentaria mundial busca imponer leyes que atentan contra la conservación de la biodiversidad y las semillas, por ejemplo, el compromiso adquirido en el Tratado de Libre Comercio con Estados Unidos, que obliga a aprobar la “Ley de Protección de Producciones Vegetales”. Esta ley conocida popularmente como “Ley Monsanto”, fue aprobada en el año 2014 y derogada inmediatamente tras la presión popular. Sin embargo, se sabe que actualmente representantes del MAGA, la Cámara del Agro y varios diputados buscan aprobarla nuevamente, considerado el mecanismo legal para garantizar la privatización de la obtención, distribución y procesamiento de nuestras semillas y la biodiversidad en general.

Esta situación alerta sobre la urgencia de construir espacios que busquen garan-

tizar la conservación y revalorización de

los conocimientos ancestrales, las prácticas agroecológicas y la promoción del uso autónomo de semillas nativas. Por ello, es en el marco de esta situación en el que se celebrará el próximo 26, 27 y 28 de abril el Sexto Encuentro Continental de la Red Semillas de Libertad, donde participarán representantes de 10 países de Abya Yala. En este Encuentro se reunirán representantes de diversas comunidades y pueblos de Guatemala para que, a través del diálogo y la concertación, se establezca en el país la Red Nacional de Guardianes de Semillas. Es una nueva oportunidad para seguir abonando al esfuerzo colectivo de proteger las semillas nativas y como pueblos hacia la autonomía y soberanía alimentaria.

EVENTS The VI Continental Meeting on Seeds will be held in Mayan Lands We have thousands of years of dedication and ancestral acquired knowledge to thank for the immense variety of seeds we now serve up everyday. After all, it was alongside the corn, bean, chan and amaranth seed that the people of Mesoamerica developed one of the most outstanding cultures in human history. Our Mayan forefathers knew and acknowledged from ancestral cosmogony that the Creator and Maker gave us all we need to live well and abundantly. They knew that their mother gave us corn, and so offered and continued to offer prayers and ceremonies for ths sacred corn. The value of such knowledge comes from the fact that it was developed through observation and experimentation, keeping a balance with the rest of the territory’s species, where nature and the earth are sacred.

The invasion of territory, the Colonial period and the permanent policies of dispossession failed to stop the transfer of that knowledge. Today, we have a vast amount of techniques being implemented to ensure that the population gets fed.

It must also be recognized that this knowledge survives amid the most adverse conditions: the conditions of social inequality in which the majority of the population lives, the concentration of productive land and the expansion of cane, palm and banana monocultures; the contamination of the rivers and water sources and the corruption of the state authorities responsible for supporting agriculture.

Added to this is the fact that the world food industry seeks to impose laws that undermine the conservation of biodiversity and seeds, such as the commitment

made in the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, which requires the approval of the “Law of Protection of Vegetable Production “. This law, popularly known as the “Monsanto Law”, was passed in 2014 and repealed immediately after due to popular pressure. However it is known that representatives of the MAGA, the Chamber of Agriculture and several deputies are currently seeking to approve it again, considering the legal mechanism to ensure the privatization of the procurement, distribution and processing of our seeds and biodiversity in general.

This situation highlights the urgency of building spaces designed to guarantee the conservation and revaluation of ancestral knowledge, agroecological practices and the promotion of the autonomous use of native seeds. For this reason, it is in light of this situation that the Sixth Continental Encounter of the Seeds of Freedom Network will be held on the 26th, 27th and 28th of April in which representatives of 10 countries of Abya Yala will participate.

In this meeting, representatives of various communities and peoples of Guatemala will gather to ensure that through dialogue and agreement, the National Network of Seed Guardians is established in the country. It is a new opportunity to continue paying for the collective effort to protect native seeds and advance as communities towards autonomy and food sovereignty.

TEMA DE PORTADA El hogar: nuestro primer universo KEREN ESCOBAR

Recientemente, descubrí mi fascinación por las viviendas; todo empieza cuando veo las ventanas de las casas y comienza un viaje mental donde imagino todo el entorno interno…muebles, cortinas, decoración, el color de las paredes, el olor propio de ese hogar. Ese imaginario se intensifica hasta convertirse en curiosidad por saber quiénes conviven en ese espacio y qué historias se libran; los momentos más tristes o felices que suceden ahí, detrás de esas paredes y en tiempo real. Puedo inventar una historia por cada vivienda que veo desde el exterior, porque en esos espacios cerrados donde pernoctamos durante la noche y donde

crecemos y nos desarrollamos como seres sociales durante el día, se forman pequeños universos compuestos de diversas familias, unas pequeñas, quizás de dos personas, y otras, como la de mis abuelitos maternos, con más de doce integrantes. Estos espacios son nuestras casas y son el resultado de la evolución arquitectónica que todos los días va cambiando poco a poco. Desde apartamentos unipersonales hasta mansiones exuberantes, un porcentaje importante de nuestro tiempo de vida se realiza adentro de nuestras casas.

Las primeras “casas” que nuestros ancestros habitaron fueron cavernas y cuevas, siendo la connotación de las mismas algo tan importante como la propia existencia, pues desde esos agujeros oscuros, sagrados y profundos es desde donde emergió la vida, casi como un simbolismo de la cavidad uterina, la segunda piel que nos cubrió de diversos peligros en el vientre de nuestra madre, nuestro primer refugio. Para las diferentes culturas, la casa constituye también un elemento muy importante de la vida. En la cosmovisión Maya, por ejemplo, ésta es el centro de todo, donde se enciende el fuego sagrado; es el lugar principal donde los abuelos han transmitido y continúan transmitiendo la tradición oral de generación en generación. El libro sagrado del Popol Vuh nos narra la historia de los hermanos Hunahpú e Ixbalanqué, quienes se despiden de su abuela Ixmucané y de su madre Ixkik antes de su viaje a Xibalbá -el inframundo-. Y es en su hogar, en donde estos dos hermanos dejan sembrada una caña de

milpa que será la señal de que aún están con vida durante su travesía.

Años más tarde, después de esas cavernas, las viviendas han cambiado con el pasar del tiempo. El diseño arquitectónico de las viviendas de hace décadas, tenía la peculiaridad de tener un patio en el centro y las habitaciones alrededor de éste. La cocina era el espacio más importante dentro de la casa, pues alrededor del fuego se preparaban y consumían los alimentos, siendo la hora de la comida un momento idóneo para compartir en familia. En la actualidad, todavía existen casas que siguen replicando este modelo; sin embargo, el cambio en la dinámica producto de diferentes fenómenos sociales, como por ejemplo la migración, ha dado paso a la creación de un nuevo tipo de viviendas, como las construidas bajo el estilo de la “arquitectura de remesa”.

El hogar es más allá que unas cuantas paredes y algunas ventanas; al igual que la familia, no está formado precisamente por un lazo de consanguinidad sino por algo mucho más profundo que nos hace ser seres sociales, que necesitan una plática cordial en la sala o la cocina, que necesitan de momentos de café, vino o chocolate en un espacio cómodo y privado que nos hace reconocer la sensación de calidez, privacidad y confianza y que nos hace precisamente sentirnos en casa.

Home: our primary universe KEREN ESCOBAR Recently, I discovered my fascination with dwelling places; it all begins when I see the windows of houses, a mental excursion during which I imagine the entire inside atmosphere --the furniture, the curtains, the decor, the colors of the walls, the odors specific to that home. My imagination grows, becoming intense curiosity, curiosity about who lives in that place and what stories are stored inside: the saddest moments, the happy ones or the most passionate that happen there, between those walls--someone’s reality. From the outside I’m capable of inventing a tale for each house. These enclosed spaces are where we spend our nights and during the day where we grow up and develop into social beings. They are little universes formed by the diversity of families, some as small as perhaps only two people or as in the family of my maternal grandparent’s, as many as twelve members. These spaces are our homes and they are the result of an architectural evolution which is changing little by little each day.

From one-person apartments to lavish mansions, an important portion of our daily lives occurs inside our homes.

The first “homes” that our ancestors inhabited were caverns and caves.

Although they were just that -- caves and caverns--they were as important as our existence because those dark holes, sacred and profound, is from where life emerged. Almost as if they were symbolic uterine cavities, a second layer of skin that shielded us from various dangers, just as our mother’s belly was our first refuge.

Home makes up a very important part of life in many cultures. For example, in the Mayan worldview, it is the center of everything. It is where the sacred fire is kindled. It is the central place where, from one generation to the next, grandparents have passed along and continue to convey oral tradition. The sacred book, Popol Vuh, narrates for us the story of the brothers Hunahpú and Isbalanqué during which they take leave of their grandmother Ixmucané and their mother Ixkik before their trip to Xibalba -- the netherworld. And it is in their home, their hearth where the two brothers leave planted a stalk of maize that will signal that they are still alive in spite of their journey into the underworld.

housing has changed. For decades now architectural design has included the peculiarity of placing a patio in the center with rooms surrounding it. The kitchen used to be the central place, the most important in the home. Around its fire, nourishment was prepared and consumed, mealtime being the ideal moment for family sharing. Today there are still homes where this practice is continued. Nevertheless, change in this dynamic due to various social phenomena, such as migration, has given rise to a new type of housing-that of “architectural remittances”-imitations of upscale suburbia and center city gentrification in the United States.

Home is more than a few walls and some windows. Like family, the sense of home is not only built on the bond of kinship, but rather from something profound, that which makes us social beings. It takes living-room convers at i o n a n d c h at t i n g a ro u n d t h e kitchen table. It takes those moments of sharing a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a hot chocolate in a comfortable, intimate space which provides a sense of a rich quality of life defined by intimacy and trust -precisely- making us feel at home.

TEMA DE PORTADA Arquitectura sin arquitectos PALOMA SOVEN Desde la primera madre agricultura, que plantó aquellas semillas de trigo salvaje en la antigua Mesopotamia, la humanidad ha tenido la necesidad de asentarse en un lugar, dejar las cavernas y la vida nómada y construir cabañas. Ese fue el momento en el que alguien, que no era arquitecto, decidió construir su vivienda.

Nacieron las ciudades y los pueblos. Las personas construían con los materiales que tenían a su alcance y con el tiempo se fue acumulando un conocimiento ancestral, en el cual se diseñaban viviendas con materiales naturales, antisísmicas y acordes con el medio en el que se asentaban. Se entendía la construcción de la vivienda como un acto comunal en el que todo el pueblo ayudaba en su ejecución (las llamadas mingas en el sur de América Latina) y se consideraba la vivienda como un ente vivo, el cual respiraba y necesitaba de cuidados periódicos.

Después de aquello, llegó el llamado “desarrollo” en la arquitectura: el concreto armado. El concreto ya existía desde la antigua Roma; la innovación fue agregarle barras de acero para aguantar las cargas de tracción. Desde entonces comenzaron a crecer las ciudades y con ellas a desarrollarse la desigualdad entre la ciudad y la zona rural y de este modo, a aumentar la brecha entre ricos y pobres.

Las personas migraron a las ciudades y allá comenzaron a crecer los suburbios, tugurios, villas, slums, favelas, chabolas, etc. o como se le llama en lenguaje arquitectónico: los asentamientos informales.

Estas viviendas están construidas con partes de residuos, con diversidad de materiales como ruedas de vehículos, trozos de lámina, plásticos, cartones y otros materiales que por lo general presentan condiciones insalubres de habitabilidad.

Más imágenes en: http://cabinsandcabinsandcabins.tumblr.com Estas viviendas nacieron bajo la premisa de ser temporales, como los pueblos (hoy en día fantasmas en su gran mayoría) del desierto de Atacama, al norte de Chile, que se construían entorno a las minas de cobre a cielo abierto explotadas por capital extranjero. O la agrupación de palapas –construcciones hechas con techo de palma- que formaron pueblos alrededor de las fincas bananeras de la United Fruit Company en Guatemala.

En las ciudades, los suburbios asumieron el cariz de permanentes. Es la consecuencia inevitable del famoso “desarrollo”. Ya lo decía Eduardo Galeano en Las venas abiertas de América Latina: “el desarrollo desarrolla la desigualdad”. Y así es, el desarrollo desarrolla la desigualdad de las ciudades, de sus viviendas y de los habitantes que las habitan. El buen vivir se esfuma. Y pese a que las grandes esferas del mundo hacen cumbres, las Naciones Unidas escribe sus Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenibles y muchísimas ONGDs trabajan

en ello, millones de seres humanos en el mundo siguen y seguirán sufriendo las consecuencias del perverso desarrollo.

Según el artículo 25.1 de la Declaración de los Derechos Humanos, las personas tienen derecho a una vivienda; sin embargo, no se especifica qué condiciones mínimas debe poseer. Las personas construyen sus hogares como pueden, con o sin ayuda de sus vecinos, con o sin materiales óptimos, con o sin conocimientos de construcción y por desgracia, siempre con un ojo en el occidente. Es decir, se puede observar una tendencia generalizada de apropiación de materiales de la construcción y “estilos” arquitectónicos provenientes de países occidentales (y por tanto, una desapropiación de técnicas y estilos locales de construcción y una pérdida del patrimonio cultural de las comunidades).

Architecture withouth architects PALOMA SOVEN Since the mother of agriculture first sowed those wild wheat seeds in ancient Mesopotamia, humanity has had a need to settle in a place, leave the caves and nomadic life and build huts. It was at that moment that someone, who wasn’t an architect, decided to build their own home.

And so cities and towns were born.

People would build with any materials they could get their hands on, over time developing an ancestral know-how to design homes with natural materials, that were earthquake-proof and in keeping with their surrounding environment.

Building a place to live was regarded as a communal act in which the whole town would get involved (the so-called “mingas” in South America) and the home was seen as a living, breathing entity, which needed regular TLC. After that came the alleged ‘development’ in architecture: reinforced concrete.

While concrete had existed since Ancient Roman times, the innovation was to add steel bars to it to be used as support in towing loads. From then on cities began to evolve, as did the inequality between cities and rural areas, so increasing the divide between the rich and the poor.

Such dwellings were constructed under the premise that they would be temporary. Just like the towns (nowadays primarily just ghost towns) in the Atacama desert of Northern Chile, which were built around open air copper

In cities, the suburbs took on a more permanent look. It’s the inevitable consequence of the famous ‘development’.

As Eduardo Galeano says in ‘Las venas abiertas de America Latina’ (Open Veins of Latin America) “development breeds inequality”. And so it goes, development breeds inequality in cities, both in its settlements and between the people who live there. The good life disappears. And despite the fact that major world players hold Summits, the UN put together their Sustainable Development Goals and many NGOs work towards them, millions of human beings in the world do and will continue to suffer the consequences of this wicked ‘development’.

According to article 25.1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, every person has the right to a home. However, it isn’t specified what the minimum conditions of this home must be. People build their homes in whatever way they can, with or without the help of their neighbours, with or without suitable materials, with or without even knowing how to build it, but, unfortunately, always with Western architecture in mind. There is a noticeable general trend of appropriation of Western materials and architectural ‘styles’’ (and therefore a shunning of local construction techniques and styles, and a loss of a community’s cultural heritage).

These are dwellings made out of waste and a range of materials such as wheels, bits of sheet, plastic, cardboard and other matter that generally makes for rather unsanitary living conditions/ not generally fit for human residency.

No quiero imaginar cómo debe ser trabajar en medio de la sabana africana con las paredes de cristal cuando exista un fallo eléctrico y no funcione el aire acondicionado. También he visto cómo en las regiones de Latinoamérica, África Subsahariana y en el sur de Asia se tiene la idea generalizada de que construir con bloque es sinónimo de desarrollo. Esta idea es como una gran epidemia que se expande a gran velocidad por los países en desarrollo: “Es fácil, rápido, barato y encima es como lo hacéis allí, en Europa” me dijo Bour, el jefe de los obreros de una obra que dirigí en un pueblo de Senegal.

Desde los inicios de la humanidad y en todo el mundo se ha construido con tierra y se han ido adquiriendo técnicas locales adaptadas totalmente a las condiciones de cada lugar. En América Latina estas técnicas podrían ser el bahareque (también llamado quincha o pau-a-pique), o se ha construido con materiales como el adobe (los adobes incas -de la zona del Tawantinsuyu- suelen

ser mucho más pequeños que los heredados de los mayas de Mesoamérica), y el bambú (en Colombia llamado guadua y en Guatemala tarro). Desafortunadamente, estas técnicas se pierden a pasos agigantados con la aparición de ese gran material. El bloque no aísla térmicamente como la tierra de los adobes, ni resiste un terremoto con la elasticidad que lo hace la pared de quincha y la estructura de guadua. Por lo tanto y definitivamente, es necesario implementar la puesta en valor de este patrimonio cultural arquitectónico, pero mejorando estas técnicas en donde presentan fallas.

Desde hace unos años, ha tomado fuerza la bioconstrucción o construcción ecológica. Ésta trata de recuperar todas esas técnicas ancestrales, de mirar al pasado y aprender de aquellos conocimientos que han sido acumulados con los siglos y de mejorar estas técnicas aplicando las tecnologías y materiales actuales donde presentan carencias. Es la mezcla perfecta entre arquitectura vernácula y arquitectura moderna, desde una mirada respetuosa y resiliente.

Además, dentro de la bioconstrucción se puede dar de manera muy fácil la autocons-

Entonces, yo me pregunto… ¿será la auto construcción con parámetros de bioconstrucción una posible solución a los asentamientos informales que crecen cada día entorno a ciudades como Barranquilla o Bombay? Imagino un mundo en el que cada habitante del slum Dharavi de Bombay -el slum más grande de Asia- que se estima con 700.000 habitantes (es decir, dos veces la población de Belice o Islandia en un solo barrio de viviendas informales) pudiera construir su casa con la técnica de los earthbags -o superadobe- y aquello pareciera un maravilloso paisaje de cuevas de tierra confortables y ecológicas. Desde luego, Nader Khalili, el inventor de esta técnica, estaría orgulloso.

Muchas veces los urbanistas experimentados que trabajan trazando planes maestros, le dan vueltas a cómo solventar la problemática de estos asentamientos precarios y tal vez la solución sea dejar hacer a la gente, educándola para que construyan viviendas sustentables, facilitándoles el acceso a estos materiales sostenibles (si es que no pueden obtenerlos de la propia tierra) y proveyéndoles de servicios públicos de habitabilidad básica como la electricidad, el agua y un saneamiento y gestión de residuos adecuada, porque, por desgracia, las ciudades no van a parar de crecer y la capacidad de los gobiernos de planificar urbanísticamente dicho crecimiento (tanto del norte como del sur) es casi inabarcable ya que la rueda monstruosa del capitalismo no va a parar de girar.

Así que mejor pongámonos a ello: eduquémonos juntos y juntas para construir una arquitectura sin arquitectos sostenible y resiliente.

Como antes, pero mucho mejor.

...FROM PAGE 13 I have seen with my own eyes skyscrapers in central Dakar with curtain walls (glass facades). I shudder to think what it’s like to work in the African Savannah with glass walls when there’s a power cut and the air conditioning isn’t working. I’ve also seen how in parts of Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia there is a general idea that building tower blocks is synonymous with ‘development’. This idea is like a great epidemic that spreads quickly through developing countries: “It’s easy, quick, cheap and above all it’s how they do it in Europe” Bour told me, who led a group of builders working on a construction he directed in a town in Senegal.

Since the beginning of humanity, all over the world people have built with soil and have over time acquired local techniques entirely adapted to the conditions of the local surrounding.

In Latin America these techniques could be the bahareque (also known as ‘quincha’ or ‘pau-a-pique’) or building with materials such as adobe (inca adobe – from the Tawantinsuyu region – tends to be much smaller than that of the Mesoamerican mayans) and bamboo (in Colombia known as guadua and in Guatemala tarro). Unfortunately, these techniques get lost over in leaps and bounds with the arrival of the “big material”. Blocks don’t thermally insulate like adobe soils, nor do they resist an earthquake with elasticity like a quincha wall and a guadua structure.

Over the past few years ‘bio-construction’ or ‘ecological construction’ has gained momentum. This consists of recovering all of these ancestral techniques, looking to the past to learn the knowledge gained over centuries and then improving these techniques using technology and modern materials to amend any issues. It’s the perfect mix of vernacular architecture and modern architecture, from a respectful and resilient perspec-

tive. Moreover, bio-construction very easily lends itself to auto-construction: through some very basic concepts, it’s possible to build yourself a low cost eco-house using local materials.

So, I wonder if auto-construction with the parameters of bio-construction could be a possible solution to the informal settlements that crop up every day around cities such as Barranquilla or Bombay? I can imagine a world in which every inhabitant of the Dharavi slum in Bombay – the biggest slum in Asia –estimated to be home to 700,000 people (that is, two times the population of Belize or Iceland in one single area of informal settlements) can build their homes with the earthbag technique – or ‘superadobe’ – and each one looks like a wonderful landscape of comfortable and ecological ground.

Of course, Nader Khalili, the inventor of this technique, would be proud.

Experienced urban planners who attempt to draw up master plans have tried many times to solve the problem of unsafe housing, when sometimes

the solution may be simply to leave the people to it, teach them how to build sustainable homes, grant them access to sustainable materials (if they aren’t able to get them themselves) and provide them with the basic public services they need to live, such as electricity, water and adequate sanitation and waste management, because, unfortunately, cities aren’t going to stop growing and the government’s capacity to conduct this growth’s urban planning (as much to the north as to the south) is almost measureless, given that the monstrous wheel of capitalism isn’t going to stop rolling.

So let’s get on with it: together let’s teach ourselves to create architecture without the need for sustainable and resilient architects.

Like before, but much better.

DIANA PASTOR Por muchos años, el adobe ha sido utilizado en Guatemala como un material para la construcción de viviendas; sin embargo, en las últimas décadas éste ha sido reemplazado por el bloque de concreto conocido comúnmente como “block”, dejando al adobe en segundo plano, catalogándolo como un material de riesgo para la construcción y asociándolo con la idea de “pobreza”. En San Marcos, por ejemplo, las razones de tal desprestigio, se deben en gran parte a los daños que han sufrido las viviendas de adobe a causa de los últimos terremotos ocurridos en 2012, 2014 y 2017, los cuales destruyeron viviendas que en su mayoría, estaban construidas con adobe.

Sin embargo, ¿en verdad tiene este material la culpa de los daños? Algunas personas, como el presidente Enrique Peña Nieto, creen que sí, ya que el año pasado, posterior al devastador terremoto en México afirmó que: “según los reportes de ingenieros militares y del área de protección civil del estado, además de la fuerza del sismo, la caída de viviendas se debió sobre todo a que están hechas de adobe y tienen escasa cimentación”. Además, agregó: ‘‘hacemos un llamado a las empresas que han realizado importantes proyectos de construcción en el país, a solidarizarse y contribuir a la reconstrucción como solución a la afectación de las viviendas”.

Peña Nieto, no mencionó que muchos de los edificios destruidos estaban hechos de concreto, el cual es un material industrializado y ampliamente promocionado en la construcción de “grandes proyectos”.

Tampoco dijo que gran parte de los daños fueron provocados no sólo por la falta de cimientos sino por la falta de supervisión en la construcción que dio paso a la utilización de malas técnicas constructivas. El diario The New York Times, señaló en un reportaje

titulado El terremoto revela falta de rigor en la aplicación de normas de construcción en Ciudad de México, que un residencial de seis pisos cuya construcción apenas había terminado en el 2016 -un año antes del terremoto y cuyo costo había sido de unos 150,000 dólares-, colapsó, dejando esparcidos restos de metal y concreto que evidenciaban la mala calidad del edificio y la evidente falta de inspección en la construcción. El debate es entonces, cuestionar si el adobe es realmente inadecuado para la construcción o es que se ha estado utilizando de manera errónea. Sobre este tema, expertos discutieron en septiembre de 2017 en la ciudad de México durante el foro titulado “El adobe no es pobreza, es resiliencia” las ventajas de este material para la construcción de viviendas como alternativa económica, práctica, y respetable con el medio ambiente, así como sobre su importancia desde diversos enfoques.

Desde su valor económico En términos económicos, el adobe es más asequible que otros materiales comúnmente utilizados en las construcciones de hoy en día (como el cemento). Un estudio de la CEPAL indicó que Centroamérica es una de las regiones con los precios más elevados para adquirir este material: una tonelada de cemento cuesta aproximadamente $77 en Guatemala mientras que en Estados Unidos tiene un precio de $75. En México, el precio es aún mayor, ya que asciende a $110.

Lo absurdo, es que cada país cuenta con salarios mínimos distintos: en Guatemala es de $380 por mes, en México $141 y en Estados Unidos, (haciendo un aproximado debido a que no hay tarifa estándar por hora sino por mes) de $1125.

Además de la diferencia de precios, el valor de las interacciones económicas comunitarias que pueden surgir de la construcción de casas con adobe, es considerable.

Si el sistema de construcción con adobe fuera promovido, la interacción económica de agentes locales podría generar desarrollo local, pues los productos y servicios serían adquiridos dentro de la misma comunidad, brindando empleo a la gente y utilizando materiales locales de bajo costo.

Desde su valor práctico y ecológico Las propiedades de las casas adobe son conocidas porque brindan calor cuando hace frio y dan frescura cuando hace calor, lo cual ahorra recursos energéticos. Los adobes están hechos de barro, material base que se adquiere sin mucha dificultad; además su elaboración no es tan complicada, lo cual brinda la posibilidad de hacerlos de manera artesanal, a diferencia de los blocks que necesitan maquinaria especial. Las casas hechas con adobe son aislantes del ruido y respetuosas con el medio ambiente. En la actualidad, todavía hay personas que saben y dominan esta técnica constructiva, pero que, al ser persuadidas para construir con block, concreto u otro material más moderno, han abandonado el oficio, por lo que ya no hay muchos que transmitan este conocimiento a las nuevas generaciones.

THE ENTREMUNDOS REPORT Adobe is not poverty, is resilence.

DIANA PASTOR For many years adobe has been used in Guatemala as the construction material of choice for housing. Nevertheless, in the last few decades this practice has been replaced by concrete block, commonly known as “block” (the English word block has made its way into Guatemalan Spanish), which has left adobe categorized as secondary, a risky construction material.

And it’s become associated with poverty.

The reason for such discrediting in San Marcos, for example, is mainly due to the damage to adobe structures caused by recent earthquakes in 2012, 2014, and 2017 which mostly destroyed housing constructed of adobe. However, really, is this material to blame for the damage? Some people like President Enrique Peña Nieto, think so, because last year after the devastating earthquake in Mexico he stated: “according to reports from military engineers and the government’s Section for Civil Protection, besides the strength of the seismic event, the collapse of houses was due, above all, to the adobe construction and that they have minimal foundations.”

Furthermore, he added, “as a solution, we are putting out a call to large construction companies which have carried out major projects in the country to come together in solidarity to contribute to the reconstruction of housing.”

Peña Nieto did not mention that many of the destroyed buildings were made of concrete, an industrial material widely promoted for construction of “major projects”. Neither did he mention that a large part of the damage was due not only to the lack of solid foundations but also lack of supervision of the construction.

The New York Times newspaper noted in an article entitled “Earthquake Reveals Lack of Application of Construction Codes” that a

six-story residential building which had just been completed in 2016 collapsed leaving steel and concrete rubble scattered about indicating a poor quality structure apparently due to a lack a of inspections during the construction process. The debate, then, is to question whether adobe is truly an inadequate building material, or more likely, has been used incorrectly. On September 19th in Mexico City during a forum, Adobe Is Not Poverty. It’s Resilience experts discussed the advantages of adobe for housing construction as an alternative economically, practically and environmentally, or, in other words, its importance from many points of view.

Economic Value From an economic standpoint, adobe is more affordable than today’s commonly used construction materials (for example, cement). A study done by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean indicated that Central America is one of the regions where cement prices are the highest: a ton of cement costs approximately $ 77 in Guatemala while in the States it’s valued at $ 75. In Mexico the price is even higher, sometimes increasing to $ 110. The absurd piece of this is that each country has different minimum wage scales: in Guatemala $ 380/ month, in Mexico $ 141/ month and in the States, (using an approximation due to a system of minimum hourly wage rather than monthly), it is $ 1125.

In addition to this cost comparison, the value of economic interaction between communities created by adobe housing construction is considerable. Alejandra Caballero, an architect and presenter at the Adobe Is Not Poverty.

It’s Resilience forum, explains, “The social fabric of years ago, when people manufactured adobe bricks and tiles and others provided

labor related to construction, made diverse economic interactions possible”. If adobe construction methods were promoted, the interaction among local agents could generate local development on a major scale, as product and services would be procured within the community, offering employment to community members and utilizing local material at lower costs.

Practical and Ecological Value Properties made of adobe houses are known for providing warmth when the weather is cold and coolness when it’s hot which saves energy resources. Adobe structures are made of mud which allows for very easy access to the basic material, additionally, its production is not complicated which offers the possibility of highly skilled hand-craftsmanship in a cottage industry in comparison to cement block which requires special machinery. Houses built of adobe naturally insulate from noise and their construction takes into consideration the natural environment. And today there continues to be craftspeople who know and are highly skilled in this construction method, but because they are being persuaded to work in cement block, concrete and other modern materials, they’ve abandoned their craft so there’s no one to pass these skills on to the next generations.

Se sabe que dentro de las viviendas de adobe destruidas a causa del terremoto de México había losas y refuerzos de concreto, o materiales expansivos que fueron perjudiciales para las casas. Caballeros mencionaba: “En muchas ocasiones, se mezcla cemento con tierra, y ahí se deforma y desprecia un sistema constructivo que ha funcionado por siglos. Al concreto, le falta mucho por demostrar, es un bebé dentro de la historia de la construcción”.

Desde su valor turístico Pauline Décamps, de la posada Rural el Unicornio Azul en la sierra de los Cuchumatantes, conoce muy bien no sólo la belleza de las casas construidas con adobe sino también su potencial turístico. Esta posada, ha sido organizadora de 2 concursos llamados: “Mi casa es orgullosamente guatemalteca”, la cual ha promovido el uso adobe en la construcción de viviendas y de otros materiales de la región. Su objetivo es hacer que la población pueda mejorar su vivienda sin desvalorizar su cultura ni perder su identidad, para que la arquitectura tradicional o vernácula genere además de un valor cultural, un potencial turístico.

Arturo Balandrano, coordinador de monumentos históricos del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia de México (INAH) habló durante el foro acerca del valor turístico de las casas de adobe: “Deben establecerse políticas públicas y canales financieros para recuperar y promover esta sabiduría tradicional de construcción que permita desmentir la creencia de que la arquitectura vernácula es una idea romántica, para que las personas sigan viviendo en casitas de adobe y tejas, y que sigan siendo pobres. Al contrario, se trata de aprovechar la arquitectura de manera inteligente y útil para brindar vivienda a las familias que lo necesitan, y al mismo tiempo reconocer su valor cultural, económico y turístico”.

become familiar with it and to systematize and catalogue current knowledge. For example, the INAH already considers adobe housing and earth cabins as part of the Mexican cultural heritage and the identity of communities, the loss of which represents a deterioration of national cultural richness.

Balandrano affirms: “When a house is lost, cultural heritage is lost; the home of the grandparents is lost, traditional cooking methods are lost, and traditional celebrationsbecause a home has a profound meaning: it is the root of culture.” When adobe dwellings age or suffer damage from seismic activity, demolishing them, demolishes heritage along with the family history.

Pauline Décamps, from the Rural el Unicornio Azul hotel in the Cuchumatantes mountain range, is very aware of the beauty of houses made from adobe but also their potential value with regards to tourism. This hotel has been organized around two coinciding callings, “My house is proudly Guatemalan” which construction with adobe and other regional materials has provided. Her objective being that the local population is able to improve their housing without devaluing their culture and without losing their identity, through traditional and vernacular architecture besides generating potential for tourism and a value for culture.

Besides its educational value, adobe houses have an education value. It’s important that exists the possibility to evaluate how architecture is taught in the universities. It’s common to find modern architecture as the most popular, and because of this, in countries like Guatemala, engineers and architects aren’t very familiar with adobe construction because it’s not profitable: those with the money to contract them frequently build their housing with other materials. Because of that, it’s necessary to make changes to the content of curricula emphasizing more of a social focus in order to respond to the issue of housing, particularly the public universities.

Arturo Balandrano, coordinator of historic monuments for the National Institute of Mexican Anthropology and History mentioned, during the forum: “Public policies and financial resources ought to be established to recover and provide this traditional knowledge of construction methods which allows refutation of the belief that vernacular architecture is a romantic idea about people living in little adobe houses with clay tiled roofs, continuing in poverty.

Quite the opposite, taking advantage of this architecture is an intelligent and practical way to offer housing for families who are in need of such and at the same time can recognize its cultural, economic and touristic value.

Concrete has much to prove, it’s merely a baby in the history of construction.”

all the pieces of knowledge and skills from qualified craftspeople, engineers and architects, master builders and masons. For that reason, she emphasizes: “It’s important to go out into the countryside and ask rural people what their evaluation of their homes is, what is missing, how has housing been maintained so that it remains to this day, standing and functional, and why is it that this has occurred. One has to detach somewhat from what one has learned about building with earth.”

Adobe architecture is not a trend, but rather a type of construction that deserves to be recovered and preserved, above all in countries like ours, as ours is one of rapidly growing population that needs and will continue to need practical, economical solutions to housing that are within reach. It’s necessary to understand that adobe has not survived in vain for all these years and just as Caballero says, “adobe construction ought to be considered more valuable by all sub-groups of society,” from children to grandparents, from rural folk to professionals and academics involved in construction, understanding that adobe is not a symbol of poverty, but of resilience.

TEMA DE PORTADA Arquitectura vernácula en la selva maya de Yucatán

con los habitantes de Sotuta y los visitantes de otros lugares del mundo al Centro Cultural Comunitario Zutut’Ha, con el fin de construir en conjunto una visión hacia la sustentabilidad y el bienestar común.

En menos de dos años y por medio de la recuperación de técnicas de arquitectura vernácula para la construcción,

-Aprender de la población local ese conocimiento ancestral sobre el uso de materiales naturales disponibles en la naturaleza.

Utilizamos piedras y una mezcla de polvo de piedra caliza, cal y agua para los muros, troncos y varas para la estructura de los techos y algunos muros; zacate (pasto) o palmas para los techos y diferentes bejucos para los amarres y uniones de estructuras y techos.

-Mantener viva la expresión de una tradición constructiva y poder compartir ese conocimiento para que no se quede en el olvido.

-No introducir materiales industriales de construcción ajenos al ecosistema.

Nosotros extraemos materiales a no más de 700 metros a la redonda, lo necesario para edificar las diferentes construcciones.

Implementamos programas de reforestación con el fin de promover la sostenibilidad y no agotar los recursos locales.

-Poder reintegrar a la naturaleza los materiales utilizados después de cumplir su ciclo funcional, sin causar contaminación.

PAOLA BARHEN Somos la Comunidad Zutut’Ha, un colectivo multidisciplinario formado por once personas de distintas edades y disciplinas que incluyen arquitectura, física, artes, biología, antropología, matemáticas, gastronomía y estudios interculturales. Para aquellos que no conocen sobre la arquitectura vernácula, Paul Oliver señala que “se puede decir que es el lenguaje arquitectónico de la gente con sus dialectos étnicos, regionales y locales”(Oliver es autor de La enciclopedia de la arquitectura vernácula del mundo). El término vernáculo se deriva de vernaculus, que en latín significa “doméstico, nativo, indígena”.

En un planteamiento más general, la arquitectura vernácula se refiere a utilizar materiales que se encuentran de manera natural en el espacio en dónde se va a construir, basándose en las necesidades y funciones formales de dicha región.

En Zutut´Ha nuestras principales motivaciones para utilizar técnicas vernáculas para la construcción han sido:

-Crear microclimas en los diferentes espacios de vivienda, convivencia y trabajo para soportar las altas temperaturas y las fuertes lluvias durante el verano.

La arquitectura vernácula es un ejemplo de cómo la capacidad de adaptación al medio físico y la elección de materiales corresponde a lo que la naturaleza ofrece, y que el deseo de protección y cobijo determine la expresión plástica y la forma de las viviendas.

Vernacular architecture in the Mayan jungle of the Yucatán PAOLA BARHEN We are the Community of Zutu’Ha, a multidisciplinary collective, made up of eleven people of different ages and disciplines including architecture, physics, art, biology, anthropology, mathematics, culinary arts and intercultural studies. We focus on learning, investigating and facilitating methods and ways of sustainable living, motivated by respect for the environment, social empowerment, multicultural and artistic expression. We share observations, training and skills using tools, all which promote a symbiotic relationship with the place we inhabit.

From an ecological and equitable perspective, our mission is to create an intentional community with zero waste in Sotuta which is located in the state of Yucatán (Mexico). Through development of systems for housing, food production, health and education based on principles of permaculture, we look to generate a relationship with the people living in Sotuta and visitors from all around the world who come to the Cultural and Community Center of Zutut’Ha--our goal being to create a vision encompassing sustainability and the welfare of the community.

In less that two years through returning to the techniques of vernacular architecture as applied to construction, we have accomplished the creation of the Center for Agri-ecology, Arts and Offices of Zutut’Ha, a space for exchanging ideas and collective knowledge for the development of rural sustainability. For those not familiar with Vernacular Architecture

Paul Oliver notes: “one can say that it is the architectural language of original peoples with its own ethnic, regional and local dialects”. (Oliver is the author of Encyclopedia o f Ve r n a c u l a r Architecture of the World.) The term vernacular comes from the Latin vernaculus which means “domestic, native, indigenous”. In a more general sense, vernacular architecture means using materials which are found in the natural environs where the structure is going to be built, basing the design on the needs of the region and taking into consideration the explicit local function.

At Zutu’Ha our main motivation for using vernacular techniques has been: -To learn the ancestral knowledge of the local people regarding how to use natural materials available from the local environment. We use stones and a mixture of limestone dust, lime and water for walls, tree trunks and branches for the roof and some walls, grass and palm for roofs, vines for fasteners and joints.

-To keep alive traditional construction and share traditional construction methods so that they are not lost.

-To not introduce industrial construction materials foreign to the ecosystem. We take what we use for construction from no more than 700 meters around our site, only what is necessary to build the various structures. We implement reforestation with the goal of promoting sustainability so as to not exhaust local resources.

“Here we also have an art, an architectural style, born out of a way of seeing, because these small peculiarities likely depend on a people’s art, its costumes, its politic and even its way of understanding the cosmos.” (Ortega y Gasset, 1982).

Construyendo lazos para superar la pobreza DIEGO AGUILAR Comenzando el día despertamos en un lugar ajeno al nuestro; algunos de nosotros adoloridos, ya que no estamos acostumbrados a dormir en el piso.

Nerviosos, caminamos junto a personas desconocidas con las que trabajaremos arduamente durante dos días; llegando al terreno, conocemos a la familia que nos abrirá la puerta de su casa y con la que juntos construiremos un nuevo hogar. En este momento nos topamos con dos realidades distintas: nos damos cuenta que existen personas que tienen ciertos privilegios frente a personas que viven en una situación donde sus derechos son vulnerados día a día, con nulas oportunidades para desenvolverse como seres humanos porque son parte de la exclusión social y la

desigualdad. Con mucha probabilidad, su camino hacia la prosperidad es más largo que el nuestro, o simplemente no existe.

En este contexto es como surge TECHO, una organización de la sociedad civil que trabaja en Guatemala desde el año 2008, y que entiende la pobreza como un problema multidimensional que va más allá de lo económico, manifestado en la vulneración de derechos fundamentales y de dignidad humana; traduciéndose en la incapacidad de satisfacer las necesidades básicas, la limitación de la libertad, la falta de oportunidades y la exclusión dentro de los espacios de participación y decisión en la vida civil, social, cultural y política (TECHO 2012).

El programa de vivienda dentro de la organización, es nuestra máxima denuncia del déficit habitacional, continuamente en crecimiento y que nos arrastra a la urbanización informal. Así mismo, es una de las herramientas más efectivas para conocer las perspectivas de los habitantes que viven en asentamientos informales y comunidades marginadas. De esta forma buscamos fomentar la participación, organización

Entendiendo que América Latina es la región (a nivel global), más urbanizada, en la que 8 de cada 10 personas viven en ciudades -según cifras de ONU HABITAT (2005)- y entendiendo que a nivel mundial somos una de las regiones más desigual del hemisferio -siendo Guatemala la novena nación más desigual del mundo- reconocemos que el derecho a la ciudad es una de las carencias más grandes en las actuales políticas públicas dirigidas al desarrollo social. El derecho a la ciudad se establece como: “un derecho colectivo de los habitantes de las ciudades, en especial de los grupos vulnerados y desfavorecido, que le confiere legitimidad de acción y de organización, basado en sus usos y costumbres, con el objetivo de alcanzar el pleno ejercicio del derecho a la libre autodeterminación y un nivel de vida adecuado” (Carta Mundial por el Derecho a la Ciudad: 2005).

No es un camino fácil de emprender, pero en el transcurso que llevamos trabajando -junto a líderes comunitarios de asentamientos informales y comunidades que viven en situación de pobreza-, creemos que las soluciones a las problemáticas actuales tienen que surgir desde la reconstrucción de un tejido social, donde se cuente con la participación igualitaria de sus pobladores, desplazando el poder de la hegemonía hacia las manos de que tradicionalmente son excluidos.

Building ties to overcome poverty DIEGO AGUILAR Beginning the day we woke up in a place alien to ours; some of us in pain, since we are not used to sleeping on the floor. Nervous, we walk with strangers with whom we will work hard for two days; arriving on the terrain, we meet the family that will open the door of their house and together we will build a new home. At this moment we come across two different realities: we realize that there are people who have certain privileges face-to-face with people who live in a situation where their rights are violated every day, with no opportunities to fully develop as human beings because they are subjected to social exclusion and inequality. Most likely, their path to prosperity is longer than ours, or simply does not exist.

In this context TECHO, a civil society organization working in Guatemala since 2008, emerges and understands poverty as a multidimensional problem that goes beyond economics, and is manifested in the violation of fundamental rights and dignity. This translates into the inability to satisfy basic needs, the limitation of freedom, a general lack of opportunities and exclusion from the spaces of participation and decision-making in civil, social, cultural and political life (TECHO 2012).

The housing program within the organization is our greatest denouncment of the housing deficit, continuously growing and pulling us into informal urbanization. Likewise, it is one of the most effective tools for learning about the perspectives of the inhabitants who live in informal settlements and marginalized communities. In this way we seek to encourage participation, organization and leadership from within neighborhoods; qualities that, in most cases, already exist. Thus we are continuously promoting participatory, democratic, respectful new leadership.

Understanding that Latin America is the region (at a global level), more urbanized, where 8 out of 10 people live in cities -according to figures from UN HABITAT (2005) - and understanding that on a global level we are one of the most unequal regions of the hemisphere - Guatemala being the ninth most unequal nation in the world - we recognize that the right to the city is one of the greatest shortcomings in current public policies aimed at social development. The right to the city is established as: “a collective right of the inhabitants of the cities, especially of the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, which confers legitimacy of action and organization, based on their uses and

customs, with the objective to achieve the full exercise of the right to self-determination and an adequate standard of living “(World Charter for the Right to the City: 2005).

It is not an easy path to undertake, but throughout the course of working together with leaders of informal settlements and communities living in poverty, we have come to believe that solutions to current problems have to emerge from the reconstruction of a social fabric where we have equal participation of all inhabitants, shifting the power of hegemony into the hands of those who are traditionally excluded.

Guatemala Housing Alliance Construyendo hogares seguros Isabel tiene 24 años y dos hijos de 2 y 3 años. Un tercero, viene en camino. Su esposo Miguel es jornalero y gana con suerte Q35.00 al día. Isabel es ama de casa, cuida a sus hijos y vende la leña que Miguel recoge en la montaña. Todos duermen y comen en la misma habitación, una construcción sin terminar de paredes de block de medio metro, techo de plástico y lamina oxidada, y piso de tierra. Una cama improvisada de madera comparte el pequeño espacio con una estufa, donde Isabel cocina a diario. Isabel y su familia deben hacerles frente a los problemas de insalubridad derivados del hacinamiento; sus hijos sufren constantemente enfermedades respiratorias y gastrointestinales.

Isaías, el más pequeño, tiene manchas y eczemas por todo su cuerpo, resultado de la contaminación ambiental y la falta de saneamiento en su vivienda.

Her husband Miguel is a labourer who earns Q35 a day. Isabel is a housewife who looks after her children and sells the firewood that Miguel collects from the mountains. Everyone sleeps and eats in the same room, an unfinished construction of half-meter block walls, a plastic roof, rusty sheets and a dirty floor. An improvised wooden bed shares the small space with a stove, where Isabel cooks daily. Isabel and her family have to face the unhealthy problems resulting from overcrowding; her children constantly suffer from respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. Isaías, the youngest has spots and eczema all over his body, resulting from the dirty environment and the lack of sanitation within his home.

This family live in San Pablo la Laguna, Sololá, on the shores of Lake Atitlán.

This house is an example of many. It is estimated that in Guatemala more than one million homes in rural areas and half a million in urban areas do not meet the minimum requirements of safety and hygiene. There are many houses with walls made of reeds or sheets and floors of soil that risk the health and the future of millions of families in the country. As a result of these problems, the Guatemalan Housing Alliance (GHA), an organisation that began working in the Lake Atitlán area in 2011, hopes to alleviate some of these serious shortcomings.

Currently, GHA is building modest but safe houses for those families in extreme poverty in San Pablo La Laguna. These houses are constructed using a traditional technique called “Bajareque: a construction system from the interweaving of reeds and mud filling. The walls of bajareque act as a natural temperature regulator, maintaining the heat in the night and a fresh ambiance during the day, which makes them more efficient than metal blocks and normal roof constructions that concentrate heat when temperatures are high and barely prevent the cold. In addtion to the traditional construction method, a robust structure of cypress wood is added to shape the houses and to protect them

from earthquakes. Upon completion, the houses also have a concrete floor, corridor and large cypress windows.

Working with a local team, international volunteers and a community-based vision, GHA don’t just build homes, but also replace roofs in bad condition as well as the floors in homes that need to be repaired. The families participate in the construction while learning and sharing work experience for their new home. GHA is also driving an educational scholarship programme for dozens of students from San Pablo and Pasajquim; this is combined with complentary workshops throughout the year. In 2018, GHA is proud to support 65 students, 11 of which are studying at university.

VOCES COLECTIVAS Asociación Hogar y Desarrollo Hogar y Desarrollo (HODE) es una asociación guatemalteca que busca mejorar las condiciones de vida de las familias en situaciones de pobreza, a partir de la gestión, ejecución y administración de programas de desarrollo social, educación, salud, vivienda, crédito, capacitación y emprendimientos. Esto es lo que comenta Lucrecia Recinos, gerente de la asociación en una entrevista concedida a EntreMundos. ¿Cuáles cree usted que son los principales desafíos en el tema de vivienda en Guatemala?

La poca capacidad económica de un gran segmento de la población guatemalteca que en 2015 totalizó 1.6 millones el déficit habitacional cualitativo y cuantitativo , además de la carencia de políticas públicas estables e imparciales para la ejecución de programas; la falta de decisión del Gobierno a propuestas desde la sociedad civil organizada, la falta de ofertas en el mercado destinadas a segmentos de bajos ingresos y la poca o nula aplicación del reordenamiento territorial. ¿Cómo ayuda el proyecto de vivienda de HODE a mejorar el país?

Políticamente contribuimos mediante la participación ante la Comisión Nacional de Vivienda -CONAVI-. Técnicamente, diseñando y promoviendo proyectos para el desarrollo de soluciones habitacionales. ¿Desde hace cuánto tiempo funciona el proyecto de vivienda y a quienes apoya?

Desde 1973, se creó una fábrica para construir casas de madera, como las de “Hogar de Cristo” en Chile, que atendió a familias después del terremoto en Nicaragua y Guatemala. De los 80 a los 90´s se organizaron las cooperativas de vivienda

para familias que residen en Guajitos y Sanjuaneros, Ciudad Quetzal, ambos en Guatemala. En el año, 2000 con fondos internacionales se construyeron viviendas en Santa Rosa, Jalapa, Escuintla; en el año 2012 se construyeron 1,600 soluciones habitacionales a beneficiarios de subsidios del Estado y HODE propició crédito para aporte complementario. ¿Cuáles han sido los principales éxitos y obstáculos de este proyecto?

Entre los éxitos podemos mencionar la formación de cooperativas de vivienda con dos colonias de 450 familias. Éstas fueron realizadas por medio de un plan de ayuda mutua y esfuerzo propio, en la cual hombres y mujeres trabajaron elaborando ladrillos y construyendo sus viviendas bajo dirección técnica; HODE financió los costos a un nivel bajo pagados a largo plazo. Se otorgaron créditos para mejorar las viviendas y se apoyó con la escritura de inmuebles para la certeza legal. Uno de los principales obstáculos ha sido la exclusión al acceso de recursos del Estado a Organizaciones No Lucrativas, como HODE. ¿Cuáles son las expectativas de HODE para su proyecto de vivienda en el futuro?

La primera experiencia con EntreMundos participando con el proyecto “Ambiente para vida saludable en Ciudad Quetzal” fue positiva, ya que hubo organización y formalidad desde el inicio en cuanto a los términos y metodología. El personal a cargo dio seguimiento de forma precisa, requiriendo con respeto el compromiso de nuestra organización. HODE desarrolló el cronograma de actividades para alcanzar el objetivo: contar con espacios saludables de recreación y evitar la contaminación al proteger perímetro del terreno ubicado en la localidad. Participaron como voluntarios estudiantes de 80 centros educativos. ¿Alguna reflexión que quiera dejar a nuestros lectores en el tema de arquitectura/construcción y vivienda?

HODE debe continuar apoyando a las familias en condiciones de pobreza para mejorar su calidad de vida, no solamente en soluciones habitacionales sino en el fortalecimiento comunitario y la generación de empleo sino también para propiciar mejores oportunidades para la población guatemalteca. Para ello, debe fortalecer su estructura organizativa y crear alianzas estratégicas con diversas entidades y empresas, tanto a nivel local como a nivel internacional.

Desarrollar programas para construir soluciones habitacionales, iniciando en el área metropolitana de la ciudad de Guatemala.

En el interior del país, se quiere construir viviendas de acuerdo a la demanda y recursos locales. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia de HODE participando en el programa de Subvenciones para Pequeños Proyectos y cómo éste busca mejorar las condiciones de vida de los vecinos del área?

What do you think are the main challenges of housing in Guatemala?

In 2015, the qualitative and quantitative housing deficit totalled 1.6 million, reflecting the low economic capacity of a large segment of the Guatemalan population. Other challenges include the lack of stable and impartial public policies for the execution of programs; the lack of government decision to proposals from organized civil society, the lack of offers in the market aimed at low income segments and the little or no application of the territorial reordering.

How does the HODE housing project help improve the country?

Politically we contribute through participation before the National Housing Commission CONAVI. Technically we contribute by designing and promoting projects for the development of housing solutions.

How long has the housing project been running and supporting people?

In 1973, a factory was built to build wooden houses, such as the “Hogar de Cristo” in Chile, which served families after the earthquake in Nicaragua and

The staff in charge gave precise follow-up, requiring with respect the commitment of our organization. HODE developed the schedule of activities to achieve the goal: to have healthy recreational spaces and to avoid pollution by protecting the perimeter of the land located in the locality.

Do you have any thoughts that you want to leave to our readers on the subject of architecture / construction and housing?

HODE must continue suppor ting families in conditions of pover ty to improve their quality of life, not only in housing solutions but also in community strengthening and job creation, but also to promote better opportunities for the Guatemalan population. For this, it must strengthen its organizational structure and create strategic alliances with various entities and companies, both locally and internationally.

¿Cuáles son los elementos más significativos del este lugar?

Entre las especies de flora se pueden mencionar algunas en peligro de extinción como el Pinabete (Abies Guatemalensis – nombre científico), especies de helechos arborescentes y

senderismo de corta y larga distancia hacia los bosques nubosos de los volcanes de Zunil y Santo Tomás Pecúl, además de tener la oportunidad de experimentar el avistamiento de aves, teniendo la oportunidad de ver muchos colibríes. Así mismo, existen lugares para acampar y observar el amanecer y atardecer en épocas de verano, bajo los cielos estrellados. También pueden visitar el turicentro de aguas termales Fuentes Georginas, cercano al parque, que cuenta con servicio de restaurante y bungalows. ¿Qué hace la Municipalidad y los habitantes para conservar dicha área?

Este parque es un área protegida inscrita ante el CONAP desde el año de 1996, bajo la categoría de Parque Regional Municipal. Cuenta con una extensión de 2,800 hectáreas y con dos volcanes: el Volcán Zunil y el Volcán Macizo o Volcán Santo Tomás Pecúl, ubicados en la parte nor-este y sur-este del municipio, con altitudes que van de 2000 hasta 3500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Es además una de las reservas con bosques nubosos y extensa diversidad biológica con 247 especies flora y 211 especies de fauna dentro de las cuales 155 especies son aves.

En cuanto a la fauna, en el área se alberga a una de las especies de aves más importantes y en peligro de extinción, el Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno), además del chipe cabeza rosada (Cardellina Cersicolor), el pavo de cacho (Oreophasis Derbianus) y algunas especies de mamíferos que son de mucha importancia para el bosque. Cabe destacar el paisajismo del lugar, ya que el parque se encuentra ubicado entre la cadena volcánica del occidente, ofreciendo impresionantes vistas desde el oriente al occidente de la cadena volcánica. ¿Qué puede hacer un visitante cuando está en el Parque?

Actualmente, se está trabajando en la recuperación de la cob-ertura forestal a través de la reforestación de acuerdo a técnicas específicas, además de trabajar en el control y mitigación de incendios forestales, control por guardabosques municipales para controlar la extracción ilegal de especies de fauna y flora en coordinación de instituciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales como INAB, CONAP, DIPRONA, HELVETAS y Comités de Agua para el riego agrícola del municipio. ¿Qué beneficios recibe la población de Zunil por la conservación de esta área?

La principal fuente de economía para el municipio es la producción agrícola y los agricultores aprovechan el recurso del agua del área protegida para el riego de los cultivos agrícolas en épocas secas. Así mismo, se proporcionan servicios ambientales, pues se amortiguan los impactos del cambio climático, se atrapa y almacena agua en el manto freático, y se proporciona hábitat a la biodiversidad existente en la zona, haciendo que los bosques puedan conservarse.

COMMUNITY Municipal Regional Park of Zunil What is Zunil Municipal Regional Park?

This park is a protected area registered with the National Council for Protected Areas (CONAP) since 1996 under the category of Municipal Regional Park. It has an area of 2,800 hectares and two volcanoes: Volcán Zunil and the Volcán Macizo or Volcán Santo Tomás Pecúl, located in the north-east and southeast of the municipality, with altitudes ranging from 2000 to 3500 meters above sea level. It is also one of the reservations with cloudy forests and extensive biodiversity with 247 plant species and 211 animal species of which 155 species are birds.

What are the most significant elements of this place?

Among the species of flora may be mentioned some endangered species such as the Guatemalan fir (Abies Guatemalensis - scientific name), species of tree ferns and orchids. As for wildlife, the area is home to one of the most important species of birds and endangered species, the Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno), in addition to the Pink-headed warbler (Cardellina Cersicolor), the Horned guan (Oreophasis Derbianus) and some species of mammals that are very important for the forest. Note the landscape of the place, since the park is located between the volcanic chain of the west, offering impressive views from the east to the west of the volcanic chain.

What can a visitor do in the park?

Visitors can go hiking short and long distances to the cloud forests of the volcanoes Zunil and Santo Tomás Pecúl, in addition to having the opportunity to

experience bird watching and see many hummingbirds. Likewise, there are places to camp and watch the sunrise and sunset in the summertime, under the starry skies. They can also visit the hot springs Fuentes Georginas, near the park, which offers restaurant service and bungalows.

What do the Municipality and residents do to preserve this area?

Currently, work is in progress on the recovery of forest cover through reforestation according to specific techniques.

In addition, there is work in the control and mitigation of forest fires, monitoring by municipal forest rangers to control the illegal extraction of species of fauna and flora in coordination with governmental and nongovernmental institutions such as INAB, CONAP, DIPRONA, Helvetas and Water Committees for agricultural irri-

gation of the municipality.

What benefits does the Zunil population receive for the conservation of this area?

The main source of economy for the municipality is agricultural production and farmers take advantage of the protected water resource for irrigation of agricultural crops in dry seasons.

Likewise, environmental services are provided, since the impacts of climate change are cushioned, water is trapped and stored in the water table, and habitat is provided for the existing biodiversity in the area, conserving the forests.

OPORTUNIDADES PARA VOLUNTARIOS ASOCIACIÓN COLJOYA Asociación de mujeres tejedoras mayas Cojolya es un grupo de tejedoras mayas de Santiago Atitlán que durante 30 años ha proporcionado a alrededor de 30 mujeres la oportunidad de trabajar de manera justa y sostenible mediante la elaboración de tejidos en telar de cintura. Su misión es ayudar a preservar y fomentar la costumbre de la utilización del telar maya y brindar trabajo a las mujeres de la localidad. Desde el 2007, Cojolya ha trabajado también en la instalación de estufas mejoradas ONIL en hogares de Santiago Atitlán y es miembro de la Asociación Internacional del Comercio Justo en Guatemala. El voluntario trabajará para promover los productos y actividades de la asociación a través de las redes sociales y otros métodos de comunicación, tomar fotos de los eventos y actividades y apoyar con el informe anual de las mismas.

También tendrá la oportunidad de elegir las diferentes estrategias de marketing para la asociación y sugerir nuevos proyectos e ideas; también se requiere apoyo con actividades de recaudación de fondos.

ASOCIACIÓN FÁTIMA Trabaja con alrededor de 500 familias de comunidades aledañas a San Juan Ostuncalco y Quetzaltenango mejorando la calidad de vida de las mismas a través de programas de educación, derechos humanos, igualdad de género, formación académica, participación ciudadana y salud (nutrición, clínicas). La organización también proporciona apoyo a las escuelas locales y a los líderes de las diferentes comunidades. En el programa de educación, la Asociación Fátima organiza talleres que se llevan a cabo ya sea en las comunidades o en la organización. Con la ayuda de nutricionistas, la Asociación Fátima monitorea la situación de niños desnutridos y mujeres embarazadas, y les proporciona alimentos.

También hay una clínica dental donde las personas de las comunidades pueden llegar y recibir tratamiento. Actualmente, solicitan voluntarios para los puestos de Coordinador de Fondos y Proyectos y Coordinador Médico.

CENTRO SEQUOIA El centro de idiomas SEQUOIA una organización privada sin fines de lucro que se enfoca en la enseñanza de otros idiomas a temprana edad, con el afán de apoyar a niños de familias de escasos recursos para que puedan aprender otro idioma. Su programa combina actividades que hacen que los estudiantes se diviertan mientras aprenden, estimulándolos a aprender inglés mediante un sistema de inmersión al 100%. De esta manera, en SEQUOIA se buscan voluntarios que apoyen como maestros y que de preferencia tenga experiencia trabajando en actividades escolares y enseñando su idioma materno (inglés) a niños de entre 3 a 4 años.

Normalmente, los horarios del voluntariado son de 8:30 a.m. a 12:30 p.m. en plan diario, o en horario flexible dependiendo de la disponibilidad del voluntario.

GUATEMALA HOUSING ALLIANCE Es una organización que trabaja con familias vulnerables en la región del Lago de Atitlán con el fin mejorar la calidad de vida de las mismas. Cuentan con dos programas principales: construcción y mejoramiento de viviendas para familias de escasos recursos y la concesión de becas de estudio en las comunidades más necesitadas del área, así como otros pequeños proyectos enfocados a la educación y al empoderamiento de jóvenes y mujeres. Los voluntarios trabajarán en la construcción de casas, junto a albañiles locales, otros voluntarios y un trabajador de tiempo completo de parte de las familias que reciben las casas. Las responsabilidades específicas se centran en la construcción, pero pueden incluir algunas otras dependiendo de la experiencia del voluntario.

SCIDECO Durante el conflicto armado interno en Guatemala, un grupo de trabajadores agrícolas del municipio de Colomba Costa Cuca, formó la Sociedad Civil para el Desarrollo de Colomba SCIDECO, una organización de trabajadores dependientes de las fincas cafetaleras del municipio y que ha tenido desde sus inicios el objetivo de mejorar la calidad de vida de los socios. El estado de Guatemala entregó la finca a SCIDECO en abril del 2005 y desde entonces, su modalidad de trabajo ha sido familiar, comunal y colectiva. En la Florida se está impulsando un modelo de producción agro-ecológico en base a procesos orgánicos y de respeto a la naturaleza y a su entorno, buscando siempre la sostenibilidad ambiental. Los agricultores trabajan juntos para producir café, banano y nuez de macadamia; además de ello producen miel, abono orgánico con lombrices, almácigos de café y árboles de sombra. También cultivan tomates, frijoles, maíz, malangas, hierbas y yucas; algunas familias se dedican a la crianza de ovejas.

Este proyecto busca voluntarios para ayudar en los programas de la finca, incluyendo en el programa de educación. Los voluntarios que se queden por más de un mes pueden enseñar inglés en la escuela primaria de la comunidad.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS ASSOCIATION COLJOYA Cojolya is a Santiago Atitlan non-profit that for 30 years has provided around 30 women the opportunity to work in a fair and sustainable manner by processing tissues on the waist loom. It’s mission is to help preserve and promote the habit of using the Mayan loom and provide jobs to local women. Since 2007, Cojolya has also worked on the installation of improved ONIL stoves in Santiago Atitlán homes, and is a member of the International Association of Fair Trade in Guatemala. The volunteer will work to promote the products and activities of the association through social networks and other communication methods, take pictures of events and activities, and support their annual report. They will also have the opportunity to choose different marketing strategies for the association and suggest new projects and ideas; Support is also needed with fundraising activities.

ASSOCIATION FÁTIMA Association Fátima works with about 500 families from communities near San Juan Ostuncalco and Quetzaltenango, improving their quality of life through programs of education, human rights, gender equality, academic, civic participation and health (nutrition, health clinics). SEQUOIA CENTER Sequoia Language Center is a private nonprofit organization that focuses on the teaching of other languages at early age, with the aim of supporting children from low income families so they can learn another language. It’s program combines activities that make students have fun while learning, encouraging them to learn English through an immersion system 100%. Thus, SEQUOIA seeks volunteers that can support as teachers and preferably have experience working in school activities and teaching their native language (English) to children aged 3 to 4 years. Normally, volunteer hours are from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm daily, or flexible hours depending on volunteer availability.

GUATEMALA HOUSING ALLIANCE The Guatemala Housing Alliance is an organization working with vulnerable families in the Lake Atitlan region in order improve their quality of life. It has two main programs: construction and improvement of housing for low income families, and the granting of scholarships to the the neediest communities in the area as well as other small projects focused on education and empowerment of youth and women. Volunteers will work in the construction of homes, together with local construction workers, other volunteers, and a full time worker on behalf of the families receiving the houses. Specific responsibilities focus on construction, but may include some other depending on the volunteer experience.

SCIDECO During the internal armed conflict in Guatemala, a group of agricultural workers from the municipality of Colomba Costa Cuca, formed the Civil Society Development Colomba SCIDECO, an organization of workers dependent on the coffee farms of the municipality, and has had since its inception the aim of improving the quality of life of its members.

The state of Guatemala gave the estate to SCIDECO in April 2005 and since then its mode of work has been family-oriented, communal and collective. Florida is promoting a model of agro-ecological production based on organic processes and respect for nature and their environment, always looking for environmental sustainability. Farmers work together to produce coffee, bananas and macadamia nuts; Furthermore they produce honey, compost with worms, coffee seedlings and shade trees. They also grow tomatoes, beans, corn, malanga, herbs and yuccas; Some families are engaged in raising sheep.

This project seeks volunteers to help with the farm programs, including in the education program. Volunteers who stay for more than a month can teach English in the elementary school community.
